- 0:00Hey everybody, this is your GM, your back row
- 0:01dumbass, your GM who currently is not on the
- 0:03team right now, but don't you worry about it.
- 0:05K .O. here to bring you episode 8 of the Stack
- 0:07and Shed series. Now in this series, we're covering
- 0:10all 32 teams, so everybody gets a chance to be
- 0:13talked about, all right? Now we're covering a
- 0:14few different topics. They include what went
- 0:17wrong, what do they need, stack or shed, their
- 0:21draft picks, one move I would do, and their cap
- 0:23space. Now in this episode, we're talking about
- 0:26the Vikings. So buckle up, it's going to get
- 0:28a little bit crazy. All right, let's get into
- 0:37it. So what went wrong in the Vikings season?
- 0:39And I will eventually say it was inconsistent
- 0:41quarterback play. With the departure of Sam Darnold,
- 0:44there were a lot of questions on if J .J. McCarthy
- 0:46would be able to carry that same momentum that
- 0:48Sam Darnold had in the previous season. Now,
- 0:51unfortunately, that didn't happen, and now the
- 0:53Vikings are at a crossroads where they need to
- 0:55figure out if they're going to give J .J. McCarthy
- 0:57another chance or if they're going to go in a
- 0:59different direction at quarterback. Now, I wasn't
- 1:02expecting J .J. McCarthy to light it up on the
- 1:04field every single week, but what I was expecting
- 1:06was for him to show that he's progressing in
- 1:08all the right areas, that he's comfortable in
- 1:10the pocket, that he's comfortable with his receivers
- 1:13tight ends and running backs and that he's able
- 1:16to execute the routine things but instead all
- 1:18we saw was inconsistencies week after week after
- 1:22week and that quarterback the most important
- 1:25position on the field you can't be inconsistent
- 1:27now can you go through a dry spell where you're
- 1:29not playing your best ball sure everybody does
- 1:32but what you can't do is go through an entire
- 1:34season of being inconsistent and the 10 games
- 1:38that J .J. McCarthy played He was 243 attempts
- 1:41for 140 completions, 1 ,632 passing yards, 11
- 1:46touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 6 .7 yards per
- 1:49attempt, and a 57 .6 completion percentage. Now
- 1:52with that being said, what do the Vikings need?
- 1:54And that is better quarterback play. You guys
- 1:56know that old saying that your mom or your dad
- 1:59would tell you, your attitude dictates your altitude?
- 2:02We're going to tweak that a little bit, okay?
- 2:03Your quarterback play dictates your altitude.
- 2:07But right now, the Vikings' altitude is low,
- 2:09but it can change. As long as J .J. McCarthy
- 2:12can provide average to slightly above average
- 2:15play, they have a chance. But if J .J. McCarthy
- 2:18can't reach that level, then the Vikings need
- 2:20to go back to the drawing board and figure out
- 2:22what they need to do moving forward. Now, with
- 2:24that being said, the question we all need to
- 2:26ask ourselves is stack or shed? And I will eventually
- 2:28say stack. And the reason why I say that is because
- 2:30this team is just a quarterback away from being
- 2:33in the Super Bowl. They have a really good offense.
- 2:35They have a really good defense. All they need
- 2:38is just average to slightly above average quarterback
- 2:41play. Now, when we look at their draft picks,
- 2:44they have their first, their second, they have
- 2:45two third round picks, a fourth, a fifth, a sixth,
- 2:48and three seventh round picks, which isn't bad.
- 2:50You have the 18th pick in the first round, which,
- 2:52I mean, that's a really good spot. Now, the question
- 2:55is this, what are you going to address in the
- 2:57first round? The two positions that come to mind
- 3:00is either safety or defensive tackle. Now, if
- 3:02the Vikings want to go after the safety, the
- 3:04three names that come to mind is Adam Thienemann,
- 3:06Caleb Downs, and Emmanuel McNeil -Warren. Now,
- 3:09out of those three options, you may have to trade
- 3:11up to get Caleb Downs or Emmanuel McNeil -Warren.
- 3:15now the question is this would you be willing
- 3:17to trade up and how high would you be willing
- 3:20to trade up to get one of those safeties now
- 3:22i think defensive tackle is probably a more realistic
- 3:25option because you won't have to trade up in
- 3:27order to get one of the top guys now me personally
- 3:30i would go after someone like a caleb banks or
- 3:33lee hunter now that's mainly in part because
- 3:35javon hargrave and jonathan allen may be cut
- 3:38or trade candidates so with that being said you
- 3:41may need to address that position high up in
- 3:43the first round Now, me personally, I think Caleb
- 3:46Banks is a really good option. 6 '6", can plug
- 3:50up the middle. That's somebody that you want
- 3:52in your team. Now, if you want to go after Lee
- 3:54Hunter, I still think that's a really good option
- 3:56as well. And since we're talking about draft
- 3:58prospects and the combine and all things related
- 4:01to the draft, I need to go on a little bit of
- 4:02a rant, okay? If you are someone that accepted
- 4:05an invite to the Combine, but you're not participating
- 4:08at all, then why the hell are you there? I understand
- 4:11the Combine is the hub for all of these players
- 4:14to meet these GMs and head coaches and organizations
- 4:17just to get a feel for who they are, do a little
- 4:20bit of testing, do a little bit of medical work
- 4:21and all that other stuff, right? But if you're
- 4:23not participating in the drills, then why are
- 4:25you there? And I'm only bringing this up because
- 4:28by you accepting an invite and not participating
- 4:30in any of the drills, that's an invite that could
- 4:33have went to somebody that needed that extra
- 4:35bump in their draft stock. We've seen players
- 4:37go from being a fourth round grade to maybe a
- 4:40second or even first round grade by doing well
- 4:43at the combine. The only two excuses that I would
- 4:46give to prospects is if you're still recovering
- 4:49from an injury or your draft stock is super high
- 4:51and you have a feeling of where you're going
- 4:53to go. Outside of that, you should be participating
- 4:55in the combine to some degree. The only person
- 4:58in this draft class that I would give an excuse
- 5:00for is Fernando Mendoza, and that's solely because
- 5:03we all know where he's going, and that's to the
- 5:05Raiders. Outside of that... Everybody needs to
- 5:08be participating in the combine. Reuben Bain,
- 5:11there is no reason why you shouldn't be able
- 5:13to participate in the combine unless you're hurt.
- 5:16Players such as Sonny Styles didn't have to participate
- 5:19in the combine, but he did it just to showcase
- 5:21his skill set. And by doing so, he has now locked
- 5:25himself in to being a top three pick. But you
- 5:28know what? I think I need to break it down in
- 5:30a different way so you guys can understand this,
- 5:32okay? By not participating in the combine drills,
- 5:35that is the difference between making $2 million
- 5:38a year to $22 million a year. And I'm bringing
- 5:41up money because we all know the difference in
- 5:43being drafted in the third, fourth, and fifth.
- 5:46round compared to being drafted in the first
- 5:48and second round. That should be motivation for
- 5:51you to work out in these drills. Now, if you
- 5:53don't want to do these drills, again, it's perfectly
- 5:55fine. That's your choice. But just know, if you
- 5:58don't ball out on your pro day... Oh, you messed
- 6:01yourself up. You took an unnecessary risk just
- 6:04because you don't want to do it. Now, back to
- 6:06the Vikings. Do I think they're going to use
- 6:08all 11 picks in this draft class? No. I think
- 6:12they're going to use some of these draft picks
- 6:13to either trade up or trade down or trade for
- 6:16other players in free agency. Now, the one move
- 6:19that I would do is bring in a veteran quarterback.
- 6:22While I understand the Vikings invested a first
- 6:25round pick into J .J. McCarthy, it's time for
- 6:27you to go in a different direction. It's time
- 6:29for you to maximize this competitive window that
- 6:31you have right now because you don't know if
- 6:33you're going to be able to replicate this again.
- 6:35You need to bring in a veteran quarterback who
- 6:38is comfortable working with Kevin O 'Connell.
- 6:40Now, the two names that come to mind is either
- 6:42Aaron Rodgers or Kirk Cousins. I think if you
- 6:45get either one of them, that is a low risk, high
- 6:48reward move. And I also think that will provide
- 6:51the veteran mentorship that J .J. McCarthy needs.
- 6:53I think maybe if you just sit him down for a
- 6:56season and let him learn under someone like a
- 6:58Kirk Cousins or Aaron Rodgers, I think it'll
- 7:01light a fire in him to want to be better. because
- 7:04we're reaching a point where there needs to be
- 7:06a sense of urgency within the Vikings organization
- 7:08to want to win now, especially towards Kevin
- 7:11O 'Connell, because he hasn't won a playoff game
- 7:14since being the head coach for this team. When
- 7:16we look at their cap situation, they have negative
- 7:1836 .6 million. Now, I do expect the Vikings to
- 7:21get rid of Javon Hargrave and possibly Jonathan
- 7:24Allen. I also expect for them to make a couple
- 7:26restructures, and I also expect for them to maybe
- 7:29get rid of Ryan Kelly as well. So I don't think
- 7:32the Vikings are in a really bad spot. I think
- 7:34all they need to do is just reshuffle the deck
- 7:36like how every other team does and figure out
- 7:39who's worth the money and who isn't worth the
- 7:41money. Now, do I expect for them to be big players
- 7:43in free agency? No. I think at best, the Vikings
- 7:46will be players in that second and third wave
- 7:49of free agency, but only time will tell. But
