- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: And we're on this OnlyFan's Q&A Live for April the 7th, 2020.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: And we're doing this on our Discord only fins.

- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: Do it on a desktop avoid the Apple upcharges.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Jeff Hartford spoke today, spoke to the media.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: and it was kind of interesting how it started off because he was going to take I believe it was Alan Poupard's question first and then everybody started laughing because for whatever reason Barry Jackson has he has taken over the number one spot in asking questions in press conferences although you know
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: You know, asking questions I had a press conference with the head coach, you're not going to get much, really.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: Although I will say with this head coach, Jeff Haffley, maybe things are going to change, because he's much, much more revealing than Mike McDaniel.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: I was a 10 times more revealing than Mike McDaniel.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_00]: Mike McDaniel actually perfected the art of saying absolutely nothing, and he did so for four years here.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: But, Hathley was pretty forthcoming in his first press conference as a actual head coach with actual players in the building as far as the players in the building, 100% attendance minus Devon HN, which is expected he has not been signed.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: I've been asked already several times on our discord, you know, is it eminent, is it gonna happen anytime soon?
- 1:54[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I was told a very long time ago that that's something that you should wait for for summer.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: Possibly right after the draft headed toward the minicamps and training camp.
- 2:08[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he gets done along with Aron Brewer and Jordan Brooks.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: so i don't expect that he'll be around for for this uh this uh there's not even a mandatory one it's voluntary many can't but it's good that they had you know pretty good attendance out there today.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: Jeff Hathley asked answered a lot of questions from the media um one question that i actually i loved how he handled well i believe it was from
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked about 4 3d offense, 3 4d offense, and he kind of went through a football 101 dissertation on what kind of defense he's actually playing.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: Essentially, he kind of said what everybody else in the NFL knows, which is there really no such thing anymore.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_00]: When you're talking about a 340 defense or a 430 defense, it's like a non-question if you're going to ask that of a defensive coordinator or head coach, because defensive are dictated by the personal groupings that they face.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: So there really is no such thing as a 340 defense, 430 defense.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: The only time there is such a thing as a 340 defense or 430 defense is
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: In this specialized world, especially in football, you know, in defense of football, you hardly ever in base.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's why Nichols plays so much.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: He also explained how, you know, when you have your Nicholot there, you almost always have four defensive linemen.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: Now, that's something that has changed over the years.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_00]: There's some teams very rarely that just go really light in the box.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_00]: on third down let's say, third in four.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: And they kind of opened themselves up to be leveraged in the run game, which is something that I think is a bad thing if you get run on on third and four.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: So from now on, when you're thinking about defenses, always think about 3443 based on how many defense of Lyman you're going to have on the field at any one time.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: So in other words, there is such a thing as a 4-3 or a 3-4 defense anymore.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's
- 4:31[SPEAKER_00]: everything's pretty much specialized nowadays and what you want to see is the personal groupings, how you match up against certain personnel groupings.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes teams go really light in the box against let's say 11 personnel, 11 personnel, remember how you always do the numbers, first numbers, the running back second numbers to tie it in, so 11 personnel is one running back one tied in, three wide receivers, so
- 4:58[SPEAKER_00]: if you go light in the box meaning and when I say light in the box means the numbers and the box are going to be much, much smaller.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's one thing you're going to see with this group by the way.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: Half these defenses, they don't tend to bring guys back into the box.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: So it's very different in one regard compared to Anthony Weaver's defense.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_00]: Anthony Weaver almost always
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: in two deep or start off in something else and end up in two deep.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: This defense is going to be a kind of in reverse.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to start off in two deep and end up in something else or it's going to start off in single high and end up in two deep.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to use two
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: or two safety alignments primarily, but it's hard to explain, but I'll try here.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: Anthony we've ever wanted you to think that he was in too deep all the time.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: This defense is going to want you to think that they're in single high all the time.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_00]: So this defense, there's two types of defenses and two types of coverages in football.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_00]: Now there's several different type of coverages if I get into all the alignments, you know, there's a tonne.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_00]: But philosophies, let's just say, there's two types of philosophies defending the past and the NFL.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: Philosophy number one is we're going to take away everything deep.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to it's going to be part of our philosophy where we're just going to make deep passes not happen anymore against us because of simple alignment, right?
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Then there's the other philosophy which is we're going to induce deeper passes.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: Now why are we going to induce deeper passes?
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: Well because there are lower percentage passes.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: So you
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: That defense is that.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: That defense is this.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like this defense will try to induce deeper passes against it.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you've ever wondered or if you've been asked, you know, what are going to be a difference between Jeff Halfley's defense and Anthony Weaver's defense?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: The difference is going to be basically everything like they're completely different.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_00]: There is
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: basically a distinction and pretty much everything.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess that's where the press conference was kind of interesting and in and of itself that he was kind of explaining what modern and it was pretty much football one-on-one, but
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: He was explaining what modern differences are like.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: They're all molded.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: They're all basically subservient to the personnel groupings that the opponent plays.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I thought that was pretty revealing.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: Other thing that he was revealing on, he was asked, any changes to the aesthetics in the building.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_00]: He said, nah, you know, he wants to get through this first, but he will make some changes.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: That's basically all about where they're going to put certain lockers and so forth.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty much all that that is.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's not really important.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_00]: Any other questions that he got asked that I'm thinking were interesting.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_00]: Not many more.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: Not many more.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: I will say this.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: He is easily
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: by far.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: The best communicator that this franchise has ever had as head coach.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: Now can he goes?
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I guess we'll find out, right?
- 8:59[SPEAKER_00]: But he is easily the best communicator we've had here.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: Ever.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you go back and I go back and I try to think of the different
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: types of communicators.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to go back to since I've been covering the team on this podcast on 30 yards per carry and actually going to training camp every single year to cover all of training camp, meaning every single practice.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so that goes back all the way to Adam case.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: Adam case is pretty good one on one.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: not very good in in this in the the press conference setting he was kind of combative with the media but it was pretty decent one-on-one
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: You moved on to Brian Flores.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: He was pretty much hostile all the way around.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: He wanted no relationship whatsoever with the media, one-on-one.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: As far as I'm aware, I don't think he ever had a source.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_00]: He was never a source for anybody down here.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: he'd never wanted to meet with anybody in in the media one-on-one and he was pretty hostile, especially toward the end.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: He was pretty hostile from the podium.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: Then you get Mike McDaniel who's everybody's friend.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: As far as becoming a source for anybody, I don't think he was, but he was very friendly with the national media.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: We also had a very large national media president,
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: while everybody else was here.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: So I would say Mike McDaniel was the antithesis of everything everybody else did.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: And then we move on to this guy Jeff Haffley and he's just starting off, but he's absolutely very very very very good as far as his communication skills.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_00]: And just judging from his
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: While every other coach usually tries to not say anything, this one tries to say pretty much as much as he can, very honest and very, very revealing.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're going to go to break, and when we come back, we will take your questions, but first these words.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: And we're back.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we're doing these on only friends, our Discord.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: You want to become a member of our Discord.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_00]: You got a Discord.gg forward slash only friends.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: You become a member of their all access for 4.99 a month.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: Do it on a desktop, avoid the Apple upcharges.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's only 4.99 a month.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'll access if you want to do.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: The read-only version, it's 299 a month, do with it as you please.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: We have a vetted version, but we do not allow new members into the vetted version until they've been at least all access members for six months.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: But we do suggest you do become a member of our all-access version, which is 499 a month because it is what the title entails, all access.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: You do get all access to every part of the discord, except the vetted room.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_00]: So do it, do an undestapp.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: All right, let me take some of your questions.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_00]: We have very light workload today.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: Not many people out here today.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: I guess because I'm recording very very early
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: a Tuesday.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_00]: But there's just a few questions.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: What would you like to see done at wide receiver?
- 12:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Look at 11.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: I would not.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: We have so many fish to fry.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: My answer in 2027 might be different.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like in 2027 the roster might be a little bit better filled out.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: And we can afford to use a very high draft pick on on a wide receiver.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_00]: But this year, man, we have so many fish to fry that now, I don't think we could use a wide receiver, we could use a pick on a wide receiver at 11, no matter who is on the board, even Carnotate.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: If that's your wide receiver one, you know, or McIe lemon, who's my wide receiver one.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_00]: But at 30, yeah, 30 things begin to change.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: I would look at it this way, okay?
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's my anticipation that the board will be pretty open for wide receivers in the third down, I mean in the third round, okay?
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: So, day two, third round, dolphins have four draft fix.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_00]: Could you double up there?
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think so.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think you could double up there and I'm not gonna say solve because,
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: It assumes too much to solve your issues, but just using draft picks and saying, okay, well, we fix why receiver just because we use two third round picks on why receiver because both of these guys are going to be great.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_00]: They're going to play here for 10, 12 years.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: And maybe one of them is going to be in all pro.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_00]: Now that assumes way too much.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: But you can begin to check some boxes for this draft.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I kind of liked the board how it's going to set up.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: in a third round there's look like look i love scholar ball i think he's a really really nice player do i like him better than let's say i don't know brzell no but uh... what i rather use pick thirty on brzell then use pick ninety four i said i guess on scholar ball i'd rather use pick ninety four on scholar ball
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: so i think it's kind of open for you in that third round you got four picks in the third round i i think doubling up a wide receiver there is what feels good to me at least it feels right
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: I would not use 11 and I'd avoid using 30, but you know, you never know, maybe it's, maybe your board, you know, maybe that, maybe there's a run on the positions that you think might get to you at 30 and instead of moving out of 30, you decide, you know what, let's keep that that 50 year on this wide receiver and let's just take Brazil here, you know, who knows?
- 15:08[SPEAKER_00]: Or Denzel Boston, although I'm not a fan,
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: or whoever it is that you have on your board at 30 but to answer your question I know I've gone long on this but to just answer your question what would you like to see done at why receiver doubling up in the third round is what I would like to see done at why receiver because the more I look at my board it's pretty open to take the pick of the letter in that third round and you got
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: Or, you know, can't miss, it's kind of strong, let's just say it would be extremely hard to miss with four third-ron picks and a board wide open in the third round for your wide receivers of choice.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, that's what I would like to see them do.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Double up at wide receiver in the third round.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: Anything surprising come out of the media session today.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing really surprising Happily's demeanor.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_00]: I thought it was a little bit surprising like he was like, okay, this these things happened like I guess he understood where the divine HN thing was coming from That was pretty much the only thing that I found surprising
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: He reiterated his philosophy on coverages once again, which I thought was a good thing the way he explained it I explained that in the first half, but he also went a little bit more in depth with you know, you want to have these guys grasp what well you can give them in these few days and he explained how you know you could go through install once
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: But sometimes, you know, you try to go through install twice to make sure that they get everything because if you go through install once, you know, some things get missed.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess he's going to use these days as days where he's just going to reinforce things and he probably is going to install some install a few things, probably just, you know, some base coverages.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that's usually the hardest things to teach.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: Our coverage is because you had to have these guys moving and unison, understanding leverage.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: All right, fullback or moving to H back with this version of the offense, while they already, they got rid of Alec and Gold.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: Not to my surprise, but, you know, I think it's mistake.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: He's a good player.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: There's very, very few good fullbacks in the NFL.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of them.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they add another, look, they have a lot of draft picks to have a UDFA period.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they have to use a draft pick to go get a fullback.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think they could sign one as a UDFA, try to mold your own, but Bobby Slovak hasn't been known to use a lot of 21 personnel.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_00]: I would think that they would want one, but as of right now, considering how many tight ends they have on the roster, I guess they're going to go back to an Hback version.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's not something I would like, which would mean a lot more 11 personnel.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that this team is you is
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: suited for 11 personnel considering they don't have the wide receivers to run 11 personnel.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: This is more of a 21 personnel offense or even 12 personnel offense, which will keep the full back out.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: I think with Engold, you had some possibilities.
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have Engold, so are you going to go get a full back?
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: Look, they've already shown you that they're not going to
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: getting rid of angled, it's so little that they're kind of telegraphing, we're not spending for one.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: What do they say?
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: What do they say?
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: What was it?
- 18:58[SPEAKER_00]: $2 million by getting rid of Alec angled?
- 19:01[SPEAKER_00]: His salary got, man, I forgot what he signed for with the charges, but who was what?
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like $3 million or something like that?
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: So they kind of telegraph into you.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_00]: No, we don't.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: We're not going to spend on one.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: So we're not going to look for one.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we're not going to look for one in free agency.
- 19:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I guess they'll look for one as a UDFA, but as of right now, I guess it's not going to be a high snap position.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was before under Mike McDaniel.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to be anymore.
- 19:37[SPEAKER_00]: At least, I don't see how it can be.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: You can trust a UDFA to now play a bunch of, a bunch of snaps.
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that that's something that's going to happen.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I would say it's much more of an HPEC version this time around.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: And if they do add a fullback, it'll be as a UDFA.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: If they're adding a UDFA, it's going to be for a few snaps a game.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not going to be something that is going to be a mainstay in the office.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's not going to be a main feature of the offense.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: It's just going to be something
- 20:19[SPEAKER_00]: here and there.
- 20:21[SPEAKER_00]: All right, last question, and then we can be done for this week.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: As the answer to short yardage on the roster, well, as of right now, no, because they have a weaker roster for short yardage now than they did last year.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: because there is no Alec Engold right Alec Engold was was supposed to be one of the solutions and for a minute there it was earlier on if you remember in early on in twenty twenty five they were doing pretty well on short yardage and then the team just converted once again to what they've been under or what they were under Mike McDaniel which was a bad short yardage team bad on third and one bad on fourth and one
- 21:07[SPEAKER_00]: But there is one major change right now.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: The Malik Willis is the quarterback.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: Does that change things?
- 21:14[SPEAKER_00]: I think I have some design runs now in the game plan.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Is QB power something that they're going to run?
- 21:23[SPEAKER_00]: For sure, they're going to be able to run sneaks now on third and inches, fourth and inches.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_00]: That's something that they're going to be able to do.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_00]: But to answer your question is the answer to short yardage on the roster, the answer is no.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: it's not on the roster as of yet.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't expect them to be running out of twelve personnel or thirteen personnel and just try to find answers that way with what with Gordon.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: That wasn't working in the second half of last season either.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: It was working well in the first half of the season.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_00]: You got to go back and look at
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: What were the changes, what were the things you were doing in the first half of the season that you weren't doing in the second half.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I guess the answer to all of that is, I guess it's back to play calling.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: I guess the play calling is going to be better.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to be their answer to you.
- 22:10[SPEAKER_00]: You know, look, like, first of all, the team is just not going to be better.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, the roster's just not going to be better.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be younger.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be much more promising, so that's a good thing.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: but it's going to be better than it was last season probably not so theoretically you shouldn't be better in short yardage but i guess they're going about this by saying that play calling was part of the problem last year in short yardage and that that's going to be fixed now with bobby slow it in charge
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, we shall see, but long answer short, they have some deficiencies right now on the roster that kind of telegraph what they're going to be doing in short yardage and it's moving away from a lot of 21 personnel, 22 personnel, even 23 personnel, or 13 personnel, and going to a much
- 23:17[SPEAKER_00]: So, we shall see, but as of right now, I guess using Malik Wallace in quarterback power, and QB power is going to have to be one of the answers, because they've removed some of the answers and some of the solutions by getting rid of Balak and Gold.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: And really the the tightens that they've added been Sims and such.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_00]: like these are not H back types these are in line types.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_00]: So they're going to run duo now are they're going to run a lot of 13 personnel 12 personnel.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: I guess you had that's that's you know that's what you're thinking about right.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: But I guess I would just wait for the draft see how it shakes out see what they add to the roster and then we can actually make some some some decisions as far as what they're going to be playing what person group is going to be using what they're going to look like on on short yardage but anyway
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, I think we're going to have, yeah, but we're going to have three yards prepared tomorrow.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to cover the offensive line in defensive line.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: There should be another low red zone toward the end of the week, and of course, look for scouting the fence on the three WIPC feed.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_00]: Alright, that's it.
