- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Repentance is more than regret.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It is God's gracious invitation to turn from the old road and begin a new life in obedience to Him.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Hello, Christians.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: This is Dallas Beecham.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Stand by for good news.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Imagine traveling for miles before discovering that the road beneath you is carrying you away from where your destination is.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: You could become angry at the sign that revealed your mistake.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: You could insist that you have already traveled too far to turn around now.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Or you could be thankful that the truth found you while there was still enough time to change direction.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: That is repentance.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Repentance is sometimes presented as a dark and frightening word, but in the gospel, repentance is an open door.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: It means God allows us to stop, turn, and begin walking toward Him.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: When Peter answered the troubled crowd at Pentecost, his first word was repent.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: He was not merely telling them to feel sorry.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Their hearts were already pricked.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Repentance required a decision, a change of mind that would produce a change in direction.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Jesus preached repentance.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: After his resurrection, he told his disciples that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Acts chapter 2 records that beginning.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: Repentance says, I will no longer defend what God asked me to surrender.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: I will no longer place tradition above his word.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: I will trust him enough to obey him.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: That may sound costly, yet consider what repentance gives us.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: It frees us from pretending.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: It breaks our agreement with sin.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: It allows yesterday to stop ruling tomorrow.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: The prodigal son provides a picture.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: In a far country, hungry and broken, he came to himself.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: He remembered his father's house and said, I will arise and go to my father.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: His chance began before he reached home.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: He began when he turned his heart and his steps toward his father.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: And what did he find?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Not a lock gate, not a father eager to humiliate him.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: He found a father running to meet him.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Repentance does not purchase God's love.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: It responds to God's love.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Romans 2 and 4 asks whether we know that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: His goodness gives us another opportunity.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: His mercy tells us the old road need not be the final road.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: For some, repentance begins with obvious sin.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: For others, it may involve pride, bitterness, self-reliance, or confidence in a religious experience that was never measured by the apostles' teaching.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Whatever God brings into the light, he does not reveal it merely to shame us.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: He reveals it so we can be free.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Do not be afraid to turn around.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: In Acts 19, Paul encounters the followers of John the Baptist and asks whether they have received the Holy Ghost since they believed.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: They said they didn't know there was a Holy Ghost.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: So Paul baptized them in the name of Jesus.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: And as he laid his hands on them, they spoke in tongues as they received the Holy Ghost.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: The good news is that you can receive the promise of the Father just like the believers of Acts 2, Acts 8, Acts 10, and Acts 19.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: You can ask him to lead you into the same gospel response preached at the beginning.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Repentance is not the end of hope.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Repentance is where hope turns toward home.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: You may have been told, as many of us were, that the Holy Ghost was not for us today.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: The Father who received the returning child is still watching the road.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: His invitation is not stay where you are and hide.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: His invitation is you shall receive power after you receive the Holy Ghost.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I hope today's message has touched your heart and causes you to have a good day.
