- 1:05Speaker 1: grow up a little bit. Let's get into the show.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Coming up on this week's episode of Hip Hop Now Podcast,
- 1:15Speaker 1: New Nipsey Hustle album Still on the Way. My thoughts
- 1:20Speaker 1: on a new album from Jim Jones at the Church
- 1:23Speaker 1: Steps and five MC's who rarely get mentioned when it
- 1:29Speaker 1: comes to historical top list. Mm hmm, let's do it.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Welcome to JIP Top Now podcasts to do from the future,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you know what you do, sho as, don't disrespectful leg
- 1:52Speaker 1: lead hip hop say to stay. Let's get rated to
- 1:57Speaker 1: the business. What if y'all? I am your host Vegas
- 2:02Speaker 1: and this is hip Hop Now podcasting podcast specifically designed
- 2:06Speaker 1: to keep you caught up on all things hip hop,
- 2:09Speaker 1: music and culture that happened throughout the week. Big shout
- 2:13Speaker 1: out to all of the subscribers, all of the legacy listeners,
- 2:17Speaker 1: and more importantly also those that just joined us as
- 2:21Speaker 1: new listeners to this podcast on audio form wherever you
- 2:25Speaker 1: get your podcasts, but especially especially those on YouTube, because
- 2:32Speaker 1: the goal if you go back a couple of episodes,
- 2:35Speaker 1: I'm from the future. Now I get out of here,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I guess. But if you go back a couple of episodes,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the goal for twenty twenty five was to hit five
- 2:48Speaker 1: thousand subscribers on YouTube. And I'm here to announce at
- 2:55Speaker 1: the end of February that History Month, by the way,
- 3:00Speaker 1: that's my Black History Month voice. We have reached five
- 3:04Speaker 1: thousand and twenty four total subscribers on YouTube. So first
- 3:09Speaker 1: and foremost, give yourself a round of applause. I appreciate you. Again.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It doesn't matter if you've been listening to this podcast
- 3:18Speaker 1: in audio form for years nine years to be exact,
- 3:22Speaker 1: or you found this podcast through YouTube and you watch
- 3:27Speaker 1: the weekly news podcast that this is, or even if
- 3:32Speaker 1: you just like the shorts I post as a part
- 3:36Speaker 1: of this channel. Soul appreciated. And with that being said,
- 3:41Speaker 1: I mean, they called me Vegas and now from New
- 3:45Speaker 1: York City. I'm from the big city. Okay, So it's
- 3:48Speaker 1: only right that we pushed that goal to ten thousand subscribers.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Why not? Right? Again, I'm not hating, but I've watched
- 3:58Speaker 1: people with one hundred thousand subscribers eat Cheetos with tomato sauce.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I'm not even joking on YouTube. One hundred k probably
- 4:11Speaker 1: more now. So an informative hip hop music and culture
- 4:17Speaker 1: podcasts like this one weekly, along with live streams and
- 4:20Speaker 1: other bonus content, shouldn't have that much problem hitting ten
- 4:24Speaker 1: thousand by the end of this year, so we'll see.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So again, I appreciate everybody who's already subscribed keep checking
- 4:32Speaker 1: out the content, but more importantly, share it with other
- 4:35Speaker 1: hip hop heads and other hip hop groups that you
- 4:38Speaker 1: know would also enjoy this kind of content. Okay, and
- 4:43Speaker 1: there's plenty of content to go around. Like I said
- 4:45Speaker 1: last week on last week's episode, we're going to do
- 4:50Speaker 1: more interviews, but it's not going to become an interview
- 4:53Speaker 1: based podcast. I'm not looking to get everybody. I'm looking
- 4:57Speaker 1: to get interviews based on for timing and with people
- 5:01Speaker 1: who I think would make for more interesting interviews and
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know, for my audience. But more importantly, they're not
- 5:10Speaker 1: necessarily hitting every single podcasting on the man. So when
- 5:15Speaker 1: it comes to my podcast, you just really you don't
- 5:18Speaker 1: get anything. But I'm gonna make sure you get something,
- 5:21Speaker 1: So stay tuned for that, stay tuned for more content.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Big shout out to hip Hop d x dot com,
- 5:31Speaker 1: djbooth dot net and brose for heads in a couple
- 5:33Speaker 1: of places where I get some of my stories from
- 5:35Speaker 1: Let's get Ready to the business though. So I believe
- 5:40Speaker 1: I mentioned this before that Nipsey Hustle has a posthumous
- 5:45Speaker 1: album on the way, and I had my thoughts about
- 5:51Speaker 1: it because dependent on let's just let me put it
- 5:54Speaker 1: like this. Gangstar's Last album is a perfect example of
- 6:00Speaker 1: what a great posthumous album is. For those who don't know,
- 6:03Speaker 1: posthumous just means that the artist has already deceased after
- 6:09Speaker 1: the release of this album, right, oh, I mean not
- 6:13Speaker 1: after they were deceased before the release of this album.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So Gangstar's last album was a perfect example of that
- 6:22Speaker 1: because it sounded and felt like Guru was a part
- 6:26Speaker 1: of the entire process. Bad versions, I'm not gonna name
- 6:31Speaker 1: any bad but you know them if you know them.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Bad versions to me are when you really only got
- 6:38Speaker 1: a couple of verses, half a verse, a hook, and
- 6:43Speaker 1: then you just flood the album with features to fill
- 6:47Speaker 1: those gaps. It never feels like the artist is still
- 6:53Speaker 1: around to create another solo album. In this instance, it
- 6:57Speaker 1: always feels like, you know, a featured album now. Granted,
- 7:02Speaker 1: in this day and age, to be quite honest with y'all,
- 7:05Speaker 1: most of these albums tend to feature somebody on every song,
- 7:11Speaker 1: like that's just kind of what it's been. So maybe
- 7:14Speaker 1: it's not as bad. Like I like the Pop Smoke
- 7:19Speaker 1: album that came out, and I wasn't no big pop
- 7:23Speaker 1: Smoke fan. I thought some of his records were cool,
- 7:25Speaker 1: but I liked it because it felt like something he
- 7:29Speaker 1: would make. And again, these artists nowadays tend to have
- 7:34Speaker 1: a ton of features, so it just made it just
- 7:37Speaker 1: made sense. But Nipsey Hustle was different because Nipsey, even
- 7:43Speaker 1: though he had his features, if the majority of the
- 7:46Speaker 1: music he put out when he was on a project,
- 7:48Speaker 1: it was him, you know. And I assume there's enough
- 7:54Speaker 1: there to have new songs from Nipsey because I know
- 7:58Speaker 1: you got a lot of verses out there. Well, we
- 8:01Speaker 1: shall see. So this is coming from hip HOPDX dot Com.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Nipsey Hustle posthumous album should be out around the summer,
- 8:09Speaker 1: his brother says, and his brother Black Sam has confirmed
- 8:14Speaker 1: the posthumous album from the late rapper will be arriving
- 8:16Speaker 1: this summer. He was on Power one oh six's brown
- 8:21Speaker 1: Bag Morning show on Wednesday when he revealed the LP
- 8:26Speaker 1: will be a joint project with Bino Reducts. I don't
- 8:30Speaker 1: know who that is, and that it was recorded before
- 8:34Speaker 1: Nipsey was killed in twenty nineteen. Oh, there we have it.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Let's read this quote real quick. If Hustle didn't actually
- 8:41Speaker 1: do the verse, or work with the person or put
- 8:44Speaker 1: together the blueprint for the project, were not doing it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: This is what Nipsey's brother saying, Sam, he did something
- 8:52Speaker 1: with Bino and there's a new project that we're about
- 8:55Speaker 1: to release. This was a project that he had with
- 8:58Speaker 1: Bino that was pretty much like eighty percent finished. This
- 9:03Speaker 1: is wonderful news. Now, granted, I'm not familiar with Beano.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Maybe he's worked with Nipsey before and it'll be fine,
- 9:12Speaker 1: but I'm hoping for something that's actually good, because again,
- 9:17Speaker 1: when you have, like we'll give the Eternal example, when
- 9:21Speaker 1: you have artists like Tupac, who's who was recording all
- 9:27Speaker 1: the time, recording Mad songs, and when he passed, they
- 9:31Speaker 1: were just putting out everything. It felt like it was
- 9:34Speaker 1: like every month or so, we had a new Tupac album.
- 9:38Speaker 1: The problem with that is Tupac probably didn't want all
- 9:42Speaker 1: those records out, you know, And it was clear that
- 9:45Speaker 1: there were certain songs where he was trying to get
- 9:50Speaker 1: off a concept and he just had different versions of that,
- 9:55Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, and he probably settled on
- 9:57Speaker 1: one that he liked and the other weren't supposed to
- 10:01Speaker 1: see the light of day. And those who know this
- 10:03Speaker 1: podcast know it's the Thug Mansions, the Ghetto Heavens like
- 10:09Speaker 1: everything they had to do with a ghetto in Heaven,
- 10:12Speaker 1: Like I wonder if Heaven got a ghetto. That was
- 10:14Speaker 1: probably the best one, to be honest, but you could
- 10:18Speaker 1: see that Tupac was making an attempt to nail that
- 10:22Speaker 1: concept down for a record, so he had all these
- 10:25Speaker 1: different records, Thug Mansion featuring Nas I believe, So, you know,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I feel like if the songs are dope, then cool.
- 10:36Speaker 1: But if it's something that maybe Nipsey was working on
- 10:41Speaker 1: and was cool with eighty percent of it, then it
- 10:45Speaker 1: should be dope. If they're able to complete the other
- 10:49Speaker 1: twenty percent and make it mess with the album, especially
- 10:52Speaker 1: if you know he was cool with it. You know
- 10:54Speaker 1: he liked what was there. That will never know, but
- 10:59Speaker 1: it is dope to know that in the summer of
- 11:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty five will have a new Nipsey Hustle album
- 11:05Speaker 1: to bump and just fingers crossed. That is good. Okay,
- 11:09Speaker 1: That's all we can hope for is that is good.
- 11:14Speaker 1: So just recently, Jim Jones and y'all know him, he
- 11:20Speaker 1: been all over the internets staying he gon'n box cam.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Let's put ten million up, We're gonna go, We're gonna box.
- 11:30Speaker 1: He's been making these requests of a lot of rappers.
- 11:34Speaker 1: He's been looking to battle a lot of rappers, and
- 11:39Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie. It seems pretty desperate because half
- 11:42Speaker 1: the time when he says this, they just ignore him.
- 11:45Speaker 1: And it's really clear, and someone who's a fan on
- 11:49Speaker 1: that side would say, Yo, that's why they're scared, because
- 11:52Speaker 1: Jimmy get the didn't know man, They're just not going
- 11:55Speaker 1: to give him what he wants. He knows the shine
- 12:00Speaker 1: over there with Cam and Mace. It's much bigger than
- 12:03Speaker 1: the shine he got now. But I'm here to tell y'all,
- 12:06Speaker 1: Jimmy just dropped a new album and I got some thoughts.
- 12:10Speaker 1: You've seen the title, so we just talking hip hop.
- 12:14Speaker 1: But you know what happens when it comes to my reviews.
- 12:21Speaker 1: The first listen is just checking it out. Let me
- 12:25Speaker 1: just get the vibes, what it sounded like, well, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 1: stuff like that. Second listen, Okay, I'm gonna listen to
- 12:31Speaker 1: the bars a little bit more, listen to the beats. Listen,
- 12:33Speaker 1: check out how songs are sequenced and how it flows
- 12:37Speaker 1: in all that good stuff. And then The third listen
- 12:39Speaker 1: is just to confirm my thoughts. Jim Jones dropped an
- 12:42Speaker 1: album called at the Church Steps, which has a total
- 12:48Speaker 1: of seventeen songs and time wise comes in around fifty
- 12:53Speaker 1: five minutes. My kind of album. Make a quick fan.
- 12:56Speaker 1: I don't want to be here that long, but you Okay,
- 13:01Speaker 1: a couple of features on here. Some of these people
- 13:03Speaker 1: I've never heard of, but there are others I've heard of,
- 13:06Speaker 1: like Dave's obviously Fabio Foreign Fabulous is on here. Also,
- 13:13Speaker 1: Conway the Machine is also on here. I believe, Yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: I believe he's on here also. And the quick review
- 13:20Speaker 1: for those who just need to know straight up is
- 13:22Speaker 1: it good or not, I'll just say this is the
- 13:25Speaker 1: best Jim Jones album since L Capo, which those who
- 13:30Speaker 1: heard that album know that's probably the best one in
- 13:33Speaker 1: his catalog, hands down. At least That's how I feel.
- 13:37Speaker 1: A little quick history lesson with me With Jim Jones,
- 13:39Speaker 1: I wasn't a big fan early on. I didn't think
- 13:42Speaker 1: he could rap. And I'm not talking about balling and
- 13:45Speaker 1: all that. I'm talking about early Jim Jones, right, Dip
- 13:48Speaker 1: said mixtape Jim Jones. But at some point and I'm
- 13:53Speaker 1: not gonna get into all of that with Max B.
- 13:55Speaker 1: I know, okay, I know stack b News, I know
- 13:59Speaker 1: Jimmy got better, and even though I didn't like all
- 14:03Speaker 1: his projects, he started getting closer to a vibe I
- 14:06Speaker 1: could vibe with, to be honest, And when I heard
- 14:10Speaker 1: El Capo, I was like, Yo, this is hands down
- 14:13Speaker 1: Jim Jones' best material. Man, this is great. Well at
- 14:18Speaker 1: the Church steps to me, picks up that mantle. And
- 14:21Speaker 1: he's had albums in between them which I didn't really
- 14:24Speaker 1: I didn't really like, but this is the one. And
- 14:28Speaker 1: a lot of it has to do just for those
- 14:31Speaker 1: who don't know, a lot of it has to do
- 14:33Speaker 1: with what Jimmy talks about, how he talks about it,
- 14:38Speaker 1: how vulnerable he tends to be in his lyrics. Right,
- 14:43Speaker 1: he acknowledges his flaws, like Jim Jones is clearly, especially
- 14:47Speaker 1: when you see him in an interview, he's clearly. Like
- 14:49Speaker 1: what Nah said on Stealmatic Second Childhood, there's certain things
- 14:54Speaker 1: that you feel like at this stage he should give up.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Right as far as the the things he does and
- 15:01Speaker 1: the way he talks, he's not doing that. He's not
- 15:04Speaker 1: embarrassed by it, and he I think the fact that
- 15:08Speaker 1: he's transparent about his lifestyle and life and what's happening.
- 15:14Speaker 1: You know, you can you can just say, all right,
- 15:17Speaker 1: I may not agree with it, but that man could
- 15:20Speaker 1: do what he wants to do. And it kind of
- 15:22Speaker 1: comes down to is the music good? And I feel
- 15:25Speaker 1: like the music is good? Now, I'll tell you like
- 15:27Speaker 1: this listening to me, I have my opinion and it's
- 15:34Speaker 1: mine alone. You may agree. But if you've never liked
- 15:38Speaker 1: jim Jones, like I mean ever, nothing he ever put out,
- 15:42Speaker 1: nothing he says, you think he childished? Like yo, why
- 15:45Speaker 1: he's robing in front of the garbage kid like? Why
- 15:48Speaker 1: he looked like that? Why is he an old y
- 15:50Speaker 1: n whatever? You feel like, yo, I just don't like him.
- 15:54Speaker 1: This will not convince you to listen or like him.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It just won't won't. And that's for everybody. But in
- 16:06Speaker 1: that great area, if you liked the song here and
- 16:09Speaker 1: there and you really thought, like yo, that el capo joint,
- 16:12Speaker 1: I do like that one. I think you would like
- 16:16Speaker 1: this one. I think you were like at the church steps.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Of course, Jimmy starts off acknowledging what a song called Jomo,
- 16:25Speaker 1: which is the name most people are close to him
- 16:29Speaker 1: known by He says his grandmother gave it to him
- 16:31Speaker 1: and it was a spiritual thing where you know, that
- 16:35Speaker 1: was a single and he addressed a lot of what
- 16:38Speaker 1: was being said. He also addresses like you know, Cam saying,
- 16:41Speaker 1: you know you're not from Harlem. You know you're born
- 16:45Speaker 1: in the Bronx, and he said something like, I forget
- 16:52Speaker 1: the term, but it was it was almost like the Bronx,
- 16:55Speaker 1: you know, like I was born in the Bronx and
- 16:57Speaker 1: Harlem raised me or something like that, which again is
- 17:01Speaker 1: what I said being a transparent, because if Cam's whole
- 17:05Speaker 1: hook get at him was you're not even from Harlem,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and you claim in Harlem all crazy more than us
- 17:12Speaker 1: when this is where you were from. Jim is coming
- 17:15Speaker 1: from the standpoint of, yes, the Bronx is where I
- 17:20Speaker 1: was born, and you know, but I embraced Harlem. It's
- 17:24Speaker 1: kind of like Tupac, right, Like even me, I feel
- 17:29Speaker 1: like Tupac might as well be from Oakland or the
- 17:33Speaker 1: West Coast because it's what he embraced the most. But
- 17:37Speaker 1: he was born and practically raised in New York City, right,
- 17:42Speaker 1: He only went to high school and beMore and he
- 17:45Speaker 1: went to a special high school. You know what I'm
- 17:47Speaker 1: saying for the arts, Nando and be more So, he
- 17:51Speaker 1: would never really be from be Moore, but he's always
- 17:54Speaker 1: embraced the West Coast more even before death row then
- 18:00Speaker 1: then he did, and why even though his whole crew
- 18:02Speaker 1: of outlaws are from Jersey and all of that, he
- 18:06Speaker 1: just at least lyrically and publicly embraced the West Coast.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So most people wouldn't say, naw, he from New York
- 18:15Speaker 1: or now he from bmore So. I think that's where
- 18:17Speaker 1: you find Jim Jones in a lot of ways. It's like, yeah,
- 18:23Speaker 1: Bronx is where I was born and probably raised for
- 18:26Speaker 1: a certain amount of time. Because I don't know the details.
- 18:27Speaker 1: I don't care about all this where you're from, except
- 18:30Speaker 1: for Brooklyn. But you know what I'm saying, Like, I'm
- 18:34Speaker 1: not as mad at that as some would be. And
- 18:38Speaker 1: then also he says, on this album, and we're going
- 18:43Speaker 1: to get into a little bit, we're kind of getting
- 18:45Speaker 1: into it anyway, but he says, because well, the other
- 18:50Speaker 1: thing that was said about him was that Cam, I'm
- 18:53Speaker 1: not Cam. Cam said that Mace taught you how to rhyme.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And on this album, Jim Jones has a rebuttal for
- 19:03Speaker 1: that that says, they taught me how to rap, or
- 19:08Speaker 1: like what he said, they taught me how to rap?
- 19:11Speaker 1: I went platinum. Now I lacked them right. For those
- 19:17Speaker 1: who don't know, pause, we're not talking about actual lapse,
- 19:20Speaker 1: right you, Like we're talking about in a race. When
- 19:25Speaker 1: you're running a race and I run so fast that
- 19:28Speaker 1: I meet you, I come back around and I meet
- 19:31Speaker 1: you where you are and keep going. That's like laughing
- 19:34Speaker 1: you like Captain America did to a falcon in one
- 19:37Speaker 1: of the Marvel movies. And that was interesting because this
- 19:44Speaker 1: album is like pretty dope. I mean, it has some
- 19:47Speaker 1: standout records for me, like Dope Boy and Walking on Business,
- 19:52Speaker 1: Feature in Conway, Jomo is dope, Genesis is dope to me.
- 19:57Speaker 1: There's a lot of records I like it here, what's
- 20:01Speaker 1: going on with Dave East was dope. I like the
- 20:03Speaker 1: way Jim put his rhymes together on There, Mano's on
- 20:07Speaker 1: here too. I didn't even notice that that's a damn share.
- 20:11Speaker 1: But with this album, and especially those people who are
- 20:17Speaker 1: fans of Jim Jones, like since like maybe early two thousands,
- 20:22Speaker 1: where they felt like he turned a corner to them.
- 20:26Speaker 1: His catalog is pretty rock solid, and a lot of
- 20:30Speaker 1: his flow and all of that and what he talks
- 20:32Speaker 1: about hasn't really changed. Church is a reoccurring theme in
- 20:37Speaker 1: his catalog, Like I think he got a joint called
- 20:40Speaker 1: on my Way to Church, So I look at it
- 20:46Speaker 1: and I'll say this to that question, has jim jumped
- 20:52Speaker 1: him in maze? What is he talking about? Is he
- 20:58Speaker 1: talking about else units sold? I find that hard to
- 21:05Speaker 1: believe because May's first album is probably if it's not diamond,
- 21:10Speaker 1: it's probably close to it. And I don't know if
- 21:13Speaker 1: Jimmy has ever gotten that close. I don't even know
- 21:16Speaker 1: if he If he has a platinum album, it's probably
- 21:18Speaker 1: the one with Balling on it. Other than that, I
- 21:21Speaker 1: can't see him laughing him when it comes to sales
- 21:24Speaker 1: at all. Mace or Cam does he mean lyrically? Wow?
- 21:35Speaker 1: I don't think so either, because sure, maybe he's lapped
- 21:38Speaker 1: Mace when it comes to releases, right because Mace has
- 21:43Speaker 1: really only had what like two or three albums and
- 21:47Speaker 1: the first one is probably the biggest success, but probably
- 21:51Speaker 1: not his best. Second one was definitely a flop in
- 21:53Speaker 1: a lot of ways. Is welcome back as people forgot
- 21:57Speaker 1: that even came out, and then I think he released
- 22:00Speaker 1: like a mixtape. But that's when he kept going back
- 22:03Speaker 1: and forth with I'm rapping and I'm back again to
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know my pastor again and Cam is his catalog
- 22:12Speaker 1: better than Cam's catalog? And nah, Cam got too many joints.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Like I know a lot of people who love, like
- 22:21Speaker 1: literally love different Cam albums, and that's kind of like
- 22:25Speaker 1: unheard of. Some people love Confessions of Fire me, I'm sports,
- 22:29Speaker 1: Drugs and entertainment. Some people love Come Home with Me. Right,
- 22:35Speaker 1: I was gonna say purple tape. Damn, what's the name
- 22:38Speaker 1: of that Cam album, the purple Joint? That's not the
- 22:41Speaker 1: name of it, Oh, folk that are listening, I'm just
- 22:44Speaker 1: trying to remember it's purple something purple hates. Okay, kill
- 22:49Speaker 1: a season, Like, there are people who like these albums,
- 22:52Speaker 1: So I don't think he has a better catalog than Cameron.
- 22:57Speaker 1: But again, going back to lyrically, is he better lyrically? No,
- 23:02Speaker 1: either one. Either one. You can go and listen to
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Bad Boys stuff and say this is not better
- 23:10Speaker 1: than Jim Jones. But Murder Mace is a real thing
- 23:15Speaker 1: and it's around. Look up the Diss record when Mace
- 23:19Speaker 1: was dis and canned, there was a lot of bars
- 23:23Speaker 1: in there that was murder Mace, right. So I don't
- 23:27Speaker 1: think he's lacked them in any way, but he has
- 23:31Speaker 1: brought himself up to peer status with them no longer Capo,
- 23:39Speaker 1: like if you consider them bosses. Lyrically, I think Jim
- 23:43Speaker 1: Jones brought himself up to their tear as far as
- 23:48Speaker 1: the output of music. It being dope stuff like that,
- 23:52Speaker 1: but again lyrically better, no, not at all. But I'll
- 23:57Speaker 1: just say this at the church steps. Like I said before,
- 24:00Speaker 1: if you like the L Capo album that he put
- 24:02Speaker 1: out a few years ago, you like the vibe or
- 24:05Speaker 1: the music, you like the lyrics, this is the same thing.
- 24:11Speaker 1: There was really only one song that I knew I
- 24:13Speaker 1: was gonna skip every time, and it's called White Lines.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And when it started, I thought it was gonna be
- 24:20Speaker 1: dope because I loved the original record, right, and it
- 24:22Speaker 1: was also used by Mob Deep or for Quiet Storm,
- 24:26Speaker 1: So I just thought I was automatically gonna love it,
- 24:29Speaker 1: and something about it is just I think they could
- 24:34Speaker 1: have gave it a little bit more boomback and then
- 24:39Speaker 1: Jim just do what he does. It kind of feels
- 24:42Speaker 1: a little bit more like the original, and it's a
- 24:44Speaker 1: little bit more dancy, which wasn't a big deal because
- 24:47Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of skating rink references, and
- 24:51Speaker 1: that's a song that back back, especially back in the
- 24:54Speaker 1: days when it came to going skating in New York
- 24:58Speaker 1: records like White Lines always got. But it's kind of
- 25:02Speaker 1: like how he's flowing to that beat that I don't
- 25:05Speaker 1: like and it just doesn't sound good compared to everything
- 25:08Speaker 1: else you hear. So there you have it to me again,
- 25:13Speaker 1: Jim Jones at the Church Steps right now between this
- 25:17Speaker 1: and Westside Gun. You know, if I was making an early,
- 25:22Speaker 1: super early top five, they would be there. Now. Will
- 25:25Speaker 1: they be there at the end of the year. I
- 25:28Speaker 1: don't know. I kind of doubt it because there's some
- 25:30Speaker 1: heater is on the way, but who knows, Maybe they flop,
- 25:33Speaker 1: So we'll see. What do you think about Jim Jones's
- 25:37Speaker 1: new album At the Church Steps? Are you a fan
- 25:40Speaker 1: of Jim Jones? Do you care? You know? Whatever? Like, well,
- 25:44Speaker 1: leave your comments and comments exit below. That's what you
- 25:46Speaker 1: gotta do and lame all right, y'all. So it was
- 25:54Speaker 1: a slow news week for hip hop music. And culture.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I arrest in beefs unless it's a rat beef. I
- 26:03Speaker 1: might get into that because there's some bars involved. But
- 26:06Speaker 1: there wasn't a lot to report, And there was a
- 26:08Speaker 1: bonus episode that was like in the back of my
- 26:11Speaker 1: mind that I wanted to do a while back, but
- 26:16Speaker 1: I don't believe it necessarily needs to be a bonus episode.
- 26:20Speaker 1: So I'm gonna do that right here. And that's me
- 26:23Speaker 1: thinking about, like, Yo, there are a couple of MC's
- 26:28Speaker 1: who are notably nice and influential in this rap game
- 26:33Speaker 1: that almost never get mentioned when people talk about their
- 26:38Speaker 1: top fives, their top tens, their top twenties, the top fifties,
- 26:41Speaker 1: like there's somewhere. It's maybe somewhere in the top fifties
- 26:45Speaker 1: they're shuffled, but sometimes you got to go to one
- 26:47Speaker 1: hundred just to see them. And it's kind of blasphemous
- 26:51Speaker 1: considering how dope these individuals are and how many other
- 26:57Speaker 1: MC's who we do put in front of them in
- 27:00Speaker 1: some cases were influenced by And I don't mean I
- 27:05Speaker 1: was influencing then I came up my own style. I mean, like, no,
- 27:07Speaker 1: you can draw a direct line from that person's flow
- 27:11Speaker 1: to this guy's flow. So I came up with a
- 27:14Speaker 1: list of five, and I want you to do the
- 27:15Speaker 1: same in the comment section. Who I think need to
- 27:20Speaker 1: get mentioned a little bit more when it comes to
- 27:22Speaker 1: top MC's historically right, not right now, but just historically.
- 27:28Speaker 1: So let's start off at the top. Tretch from Noughty
- 27:31Speaker 1: by Nature. If you know, you know when Tretch came
- 27:36Speaker 1: out on Naughty by Nature, nobody was rhyming like Trench.
- 27:39Speaker 1: That's why everybody was so attracted to his music, you
- 27:42Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. Because his flow was trump tight,
- 27:46Speaker 1: his breath control was great, his voice was clear when
- 27:49Speaker 1: he said words. He had hits like opp that could
- 27:53Speaker 1: be played on the radio. Then he had joints like
- 27:56Speaker 1: ghetto Blaster. I'm gonna say that on this podcast because
- 28:00Speaker 1: the Family podcast. But you know what I mean, that
- 28:03Speaker 1: told stories, you know what I'm saying, Yoke the joker,
- 28:06Speaker 1: that was more like you know, competitive spirit Ramen, and
- 28:11Speaker 1: he ghost ripped for others, gave them hits off of
- 28:15Speaker 1: his flow. And most notably one of the people who
- 28:19Speaker 1: pointed out, you know, on some homage stuff about him
- 28:23Speaker 1: was Eminem. But you just don't hear Tretch's name enough
- 28:27Speaker 1: when it comes to that, as almost people forget how
- 28:30Speaker 1: dope Tretch was, So that's one no order. By the way,
- 28:35Speaker 1: I'm just saying a Big Pun Big Punt was just it.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Not long ago, y'all, rest in peace. Big Punt was crazy.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Big Pun wordplay was bananas. And what made it even
- 28:50Speaker 1: crazy it was the fact that as a huge individual
- 28:54Speaker 1: as far as Wade, his breath control seemed unmatched for
- 29:00Speaker 1: somebody who sing all those words at that speed all
- 29:03Speaker 1: together and feeling like you're supposed to take a breath here,
- 29:08Speaker 1: but instead you're able to go longer without taking a breath,
- 29:11Speaker 1: which is crazy. But more importantly, it was just the
- 29:15Speaker 1: way he in all of his rhymes, Like all you
- 29:19Speaker 1: have to do is listen to if you've never heard
- 29:21Speaker 1: Big Pun's debut album, Capital Punishment, the first song will
- 29:26Speaker 1: tell you all you need to know before you even
- 29:29Speaker 1: get to everything else. Pun was a monster when it
- 29:32Speaker 1: came to wordplay in rhymen, and that's why, you know again,
- 29:36Speaker 1: just similar to Tretch, he was also able to make
- 29:39Speaker 1: records that will catchy and have a you know, like
- 29:43Speaker 1: a hit basically. So even though I know there's some
- 29:48Speaker 1: people who include Big Pun on their list. I just
- 29:51Speaker 1: never hear it enough. I kind of you know, you know,
- 29:53Speaker 1: I go. You hear the same names all the time,
- 29:55Speaker 1: you know, big j Nis Tuba, you know, and then
- 29:59Speaker 1: a you others, next Pharaoh Manch. I can't even understand
- 30:09Speaker 1: how Pharamonts doesn't show up in at least top fifteen.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And again, we're talking about spinners, right, We're not just
- 30:18Speaker 1: talking about impact who's great and who most people feel
- 30:24Speaker 1: are the best. We're talking about people who put in
- 30:26Speaker 1: work lyrically, not storytelling but or catchy hooks, but lyrically.
- 30:34Speaker 1: If you break it down to putting pharaomanch and pun
- 30:38Speaker 1: and tretch in a cipher, you going to hear some
- 30:41Speaker 1: ish lyrically. They're trump tighten. What I like most about
- 30:46Speaker 1: pharal Manches Pharaoh Monce has a word play that can
- 30:51Speaker 1: be similar in some ways as far as far as
- 30:54Speaker 1: the wordplay, not the flow. The wordplay similar to a
- 31:00Speaker 1: tretch or a big pun or even a black thought.
- 31:04Speaker 1: But parrel mant just like stop and start with his
- 31:08Speaker 1: it's so dynamic that you can't even you would have
- 31:12Speaker 1: to rehearse it in order to you know, predict the flow,
- 31:16Speaker 1: predict how the line's gonna end predict the next word
- 31:19Speaker 1: he is what's the term for you? Basically, he's unpredictable
- 31:27Speaker 1: lyrically with his flow, his delivery is completely unpredictable, and
- 31:33Speaker 1: he's dumb nice with it. Right If you love? I
- 31:36Speaker 1: gave you Power off of Nass. It was written go
- 31:40Speaker 1: listen to Organized Confusions the I Think the Stress album
- 31:47Speaker 1: and I Think it was a song called straight Bullet
- 31:49Speaker 1: where they tell the story of a bullet traveling through
- 31:52Speaker 1: the air, mostly from the bullet's perspective. It's crazy and
- 31:58Speaker 1: that's not all he's done. But he just doesn't get
- 32:02Speaker 1: mentioned enough to me when it comes to some of
- 32:05Speaker 1: these top lists. Beanie Siegel, come on, man. But when
- 32:11Speaker 1: Beanie arrived, everybody was like, Yo, that dude is nice,
- 32:17Speaker 1: you know. And don't get me wrong, the albums are
- 32:21Speaker 1: hit a miss here and there. I thought the Truth
- 32:23Speaker 1: should have been stronger, but the reason was better, you
- 32:26Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. And don't get me started on
- 32:28Speaker 1: the Becoming to Me. That's his best album, and that
- 32:32Speaker 1: album is a classic. But all the features, the mixtape,
- 32:36Speaker 1: features on the radio, freestyles and all of that. Beanie
- 32:41Speaker 1: was a problem. The battle with Jadakiss that wasn't an
- 32:45Speaker 1: easy you know what I'm saying, That wasn't like an
- 32:48Speaker 1: easy battle for Jadakiss at all. You know what I'm saying,
- 32:52Speaker 1: Beanie Siagull just doesn't get mentioned enough. And I think
- 32:54Speaker 1: a lot of it also has to do with at
- 32:57Speaker 1: the you know, he dropped The Becoming, which is arguing
- 33:00Speaker 1: his best album before he went to prison, and I
- 33:04Speaker 1: believe when he came back or while he was in prison,
- 33:06Speaker 1: he put out a really really lame album after that.
- 33:09Speaker 1: I forget what it was called. I might have said
- 33:13Speaker 1: it early. The reason in this it was something I
- 33:16Speaker 1: don't know, but whatever that last album was, with the
- 33:19Speaker 1: hat and suit and coat, it was just bad. And
- 33:22Speaker 1: then you know, unfortunately he had the he got shot
- 33:25Speaker 1: and I think he had to have a lung removed.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Then all of this affected his voice. So now you know,
- 33:33Speaker 1: he can't he can't even put out material to continuously
- 33:36Speaker 1: remind people. He can't really go to funk flex flex now,
- 33:40Speaker 1: and you feel like that's the Beans I remember from before,
- 33:43Speaker 1: because he sounds totally different and it's probably more of
- 33:47Speaker 1: a strain to say certain things in certain ways, which
- 33:52Speaker 1: you know impacts your flow. So bean Cigus one and
- 33:56Speaker 1: the last one I have is Kugi Rap. Yeah, gonna
- 34:00Speaker 1: stop disrespecting g Rat. Probably everybody on this list he Fathered, Okay,
- 34:10Speaker 1: everybody says Rock Kim kr res One, even King, but
- 34:16Speaker 1: a lot a lot of those nineties reality rap, East
- 34:21Speaker 1: Coast gangst the Rap Dudes, the blue Print Kine from
- 34:24Speaker 1: Kouz Rat, that wordplay I mentioned, and how it comes
- 34:28Speaker 1: together in the breath control that Pun had g Rat
- 34:34Speaker 1: was doing that first. G Rap has a serious list,
- 34:39Speaker 1: but the way he puts words together so smoothly you
- 34:43Speaker 1: doesn't matter, you know what I'm saying. He has the storytelling,
- 34:48Speaker 1: he has the wordplay. Like again, having someone like g
- 34:52Speaker 1: Rap appear on Mob deep third album, their third album,
- 34:58Speaker 1: Hell on Earth and having a standout verse is crazy
- 35:03Speaker 1: because g Rap came out in the eighties. If you
- 35:05Speaker 1: didn't know this also a few years later in the
- 35:09Speaker 1: early two thousands, Rizza and I think master Killer. I
- 35:12Speaker 1: think this was on master Killer album, but a song
- 35:15Speaker 1: where Rizza called cakes where g Rap gets busy on
- 35:19Speaker 1: that record. He came out in the eighties. This is
- 35:23Speaker 1: in two thousands and he still has it today. So
- 35:29Speaker 1: those are my five. I think they don't get enough
- 35:32Speaker 1: credit for what they've done lyrically, I think in a
- 35:35Speaker 1: lot of ways they've been pushed out the way because
- 35:38Speaker 1: either people just forgot or like in the case of
- 35:42Speaker 1: Beanie siegu you know, you really forget because the output
- 35:46Speaker 1: isn't what it used to be. But all in all,
- 35:49Speaker 1: to me, there are five MC's who are deserving to
- 35:52Speaker 1: be on anybody's top ten or any top fifteen to
- 35:55Speaker 1: twenty five list. What's on your list? Leave your comments
