- 0:48My name is Curtis Wilson, I'm Brian Sigler, buddy.
- 0:53Big Night, Big Night. Big night for the boundary
- 0:57Corner podcast. We are going live tonight
- 1:00streaming. And tonight, folks, we have
- 1:04Hokies Legend, and current assistant defensive line coach
- 1:08for my San Francisco. 49ers Darryl Tapp is going to be
- 1:13joining us. Hey man, I can't wait.
- 1:18Yeah. I mean, this is big.
- 1:20Everyone that's been watching the podcast.
- 1:22They know how we feel about DTaP, so big to have them all.
- 1:25Let's go ahead and bring him in here, sir DTaP.
- 1:29How are you doing tonight? Doing Goodfellas.
- 1:33I'll be living the dream and living the dream.
- 1:36Thanks for joining us live in a dream.
- 1:39Nice 90-degree day here in the r-va in Virginia.
- 1:44Has it out there on the west coast tonight.
- 1:47It's nice. There we go.
- 2:01There we go. So detached.
- 2:04Let's let's start it off this way.
- 2:06How's the move-in for you? It's been, it's been good.
- 2:09It's been really good. The wife and I are transitioning
- 2:13out here to get locked and loaded.
- 2:15Optimus season but the organization has been awesome.
- 2:18Lady has been very helpful for are going to set up and trying
- 2:21to move our stuff and car ship and the whole nine and it's
- 2:24allowing me to come here and focus on learning from these
- 2:26coaches and getting ourselves prepared for this season.
- 2:29All right, Brian, I'm going to take over the next few questions
- 2:32man, because I gotta ask close to the heart, I get it, I get
- 2:37it, it's my art man. Then as I said, I'm a Niners
- 2:40fan. Now you're coming into a
- 2:41situation on that defensive line, Nick Bosa, Eric arms about
- 2:46dead. Javon, kinlaw, got Samson.
- 2:49Picked him up in free agency. How are you feeling about the
- 2:52room so far? I'm excited.
- 2:57We have a all veteran room, like, we don't have any rookies.
- 3:01We don't have any apps that take a call them puppies, could
- 3:03geysers coming in trying to learn everybody and we're 15
- 3:08deep. I Believe full of guys that have
- 3:10played ball in this league. So these guys are coming with a
- 3:13different mindset for us what they want.
- 3:15Accomplish what they want to do. Guys have stuff to prove this
- 3:18year. You know last year unfortunately
- 3:20got hit with a lot of different injuries and things that happen
- 3:23on the heels of a Super Bowl run the year before.
- 3:26So guys have come into OTAs and going into mini camp with a
- 3:31different focus and it's pretty cool to be a part of and see how
- 3:34they've been attacking their work.
- 3:36Yeah, absolutely. We are a very veteran Laden
- 3:39Group. I mean I think the youngest guy
- 3:40in there might have three years experience and for me, obviously
- 3:44some really A high draft picks. I hope Nick's looking good.
- 3:47I know he's recovering but has it now, you know, we I take a
- 3:52look, you know, Robert solow gets hired comes here to East
- 3:55Coast to the Jets and an old play.
- 3:58And friend, man, D'Amico Ryan's is taken over how things feeling
- 4:03with him at the him in. How's it feel having someone you
- 4:05played with running the show? It's awesome.
- 4:09Honestly for me that was a huge part.
- 4:13To have somebody to play with him for me.
- 4:15Well how he operates and rocks especially in critical
- 4:17situations like he's a calm guy. Like he's going to he's he's the
- 4:21waters, allow guys, wide and focus on their work but he's
- 4:24been commended unreal. Like just like I said a calm
- 4:28presence the scheme that is going to run and bring in isn't
- 4:31a liar guys go play fast and guys have been gravitated
- 4:35towards him as well. Like he's a guy that everybody
- 4:37respects not only by the way, he carried himself but in fact he
- 4:40did it in this league for a long time.
- 4:43Yeah, absolutely. I mean he did it for quite a
- 4:45while and you know I'll be honest I listen to the Bay Area
- 4:51radio. I read all the reporters and
- 4:53obviously a lot of people are saying, you know, we were neck
- 4:57covered three and why people smoke the meat going just going
- 5:00to stick with that D'Amico, got some aces up his sleeve.
- 5:03He's probably going to play, so you don't have to answer this,
- 5:07but yeah, should I expect to see maybe some different things?
- 5:12He's all around from D'Amico's defense.
- 5:16I think you should expect to see anything in fact that because
- 5:19playlist leave and he knows how to think as a linebacker.
- 5:25You know how to think as a coordinator.
- 5:27He's going to be able to attack different schemes to come in
- 5:29here and we're going to be right in his pocket.
- 5:31Doing the same thing. He asks us to do, we got some
- 5:34stuff we got some stuff ready to go.
- 5:36That is just awesome to hear. All right, one is music to your
- 5:40ears record my that one more thing, you know, You know,
- 5:45you're now working as a colleague with Christmas, or
- 5:48Christmas spirit Coast, you mr. Detroit Krista sir, highly
- 5:51respected defensive line coach. And I can say, I saw it, the
- 5:54day, they brought him in there, I'd defensive line changed from
- 5:58being good, to being borderline great.
- 6:02But what's that relationship? Like now, you know, you want
- 6:05from the player and now you're right next to him, your the
- 6:08colleague, what's your relationship like with Chris?
- 6:10Now that you know, things have changed Things have changed from
- 6:17my actual roll my title. Okay, but they haven't changed.
- 6:22When I got to Detroit, I was a year nine in.
- 6:25So I was already an old head and or dinosaur, or a relic.
- 6:30I do you want to say yeah, but I was a player's coach.
- 6:32So I already understood what I need to do and what everybody
- 6:34else in the diesel, I need to do.
- 6:36And that's part of the reason that coach Chris was invested in
- 6:39me as a player because I was able to be a player coach told.
- 6:44Really hasn't changed other than my title.
- 6:47Me being a go out there and operate and do things that play
- 6:50off of him and get that message across as been.
- 6:52The same thing is automatic, it's incredibility with Coach
- 6:55Chris, he played in the league for a couple years and he's been
- 6:58a guy that has been able to transform career, the extend
- 7:01them and I'm living proof of that man's work.
- 7:05Now play for two years and extending my career as well and
- 7:08play some great balls. So the guys see that they know
- 7:11that they know that coach Chris invested in them.
- 7:14They've seen the way I've carried myself and Coach.
- 7:16Chris, didn't put his name with anybody?
- 7:18That isn't about the same thing that he's about, have conviction
- 7:20this scheme and what we're doing.
- 7:22So it's been an awesome transition for us.
- 7:25Me being a coach, but far as Kriss and my relationship.
- 7:28It's been the same. If anything, he's pouring even
- 7:30more into me. Now, as a coach in the same way
- 7:34point to me as a player like he's family.
- 7:37It's awesome to hear ya. And I guess the other thing
- 7:41that, you know, I want to kind of ask Out Chris.
- 7:45Because I mean you talked about before we jumped on like that
- 7:47Detroit Lions line, you know, do you see pieces of the Niners
- 7:54line? Its kind of cause y'all were
- 7:56that was a really good tip line. With, you know, I've been you
- 7:59mentioned suing some other guy Ziggy Ansah.
- 8:01I mean you see this kind of shaping up this year to be like
- 8:04that? I hope so.
- 8:07So when I first got here, one of the biggest things was get
- 8:10familiar with the players on R&D line as well as our defense but
- 8:13especially the deal. Line find out what the strengths
- 8:15weaknesses are find out how they mesh then Rock together in the
- 8:18first film. We looked at was filmed from the
- 8:20Super Bowl ring year and those guys were flying around
- 8:25everywhere, doing everything playing with great effort,
- 8:28passion for the game energy. And I said last year, it just
- 8:32took a little bit of injury toll, but that 19 years looked
- 8:36exactly how we looked in 1492. Camaraderie we have the defense
- 8:40online. Now, you have pretty much all
- 8:43those guys back. You added a couple more pieces
- 8:46than I said. The way these guys have been
- 8:47handling their business going into, ho Tas and hitting the
- 8:51minicamp in. A couple weeks has been Elite
- 8:54like my dear. These guys are grown men and
- 8:56they know what they're going to accomplish.
- 8:58Everybody has something to prove to themselves, and they want to
- 9:01do it with each other. Okay, one more class.
- 9:03Mm, one more hit. So, I talked to him, I meant
- 9:08John Lynch is a GM Hall of Famer you play for Kyle.
- 9:11Shanahan with the Redskins when he was the o.c. there.
- 9:14Coach bye chriskiss turret and you play with D'Amico.
- 9:17Ryan's, how does it make you feel professionally as you're
- 9:20getting into coaching? They picked up that phone call
- 9:23DTaP and said, hey, here's the opportunity to coach with a guy.
- 9:30You guys are very familiar with and it's Beast group of lineman.
- 9:34Like, how does that make a guy feel that you're getting your
- 9:37coaching career started? It is, I can't I'll get to be
- 9:41honest, it was a Bittersweet feeling because I had finally
- 9:45got back to Virginia, Tech the coach, like the dream of dreams,
- 9:49like, never thought it would happen and got that opportunity.
- 9:52What I had to? Thank my mom.
- 9:54And dad, my two older brothers for raised me to right way.
- 9:57They always taught me that you treat everybody, right way.
- 10:00Can you never know what those British had to come back around?
- 10:02Yep, so I played for Coach Shanahan with the Redskins with
- 10:06the Washington football team now in 2001 13.
- 10:12From the staff from last year that was here with the 49ers at
- 10:15play for 12 different coaches between the Redskins lines in
- 10:19the Eagles. So the way that carried myself,
- 10:22the way I handle my business, the way I came to work with an
- 10:26attention to detail and built the relationships, have brought
- 10:30it all the way back to 2021, to my first opportunity to coach in
- 10:34the NFL. And just as small as it is,
- 10:38smaller chance it is for players to get from college to plant in
- 10:42the field is like 10 times harder as a coach, in the way
- 10:49they have my business brought me to this opportunity here.
- 10:52So it was an unbelievable experience.
- 10:55And feeling to my said to have that phone call with Coach.
- 10:59Chris, the tell me about opportunity to had a phone call
- 11:01from the me cohort, we refer a teammates together in
- 11:04Philadelphia. In in Krakow, Shanahan to
- 11:06solidify with opportunity to come out here and coach and get
- 11:10my feet wet. Be coaching and be around this
- 11:13great organization is, it's been unreal.
- 11:15Like, I feel like that do them in training.
- 11:18They were Denzel Washington like every day.
- 11:20I'm learning something that's awesome to see how the other
- 11:29side of the game at this level. Yeah that's awesome to hear.
- 11:34So I got a question stop, non her specific because I'm not I'm
- 11:37not quite in the tank like Curtis is there.
- 11:39But I mean, the biggest. And so you been power, five
- 11:44defensive line coach. Now your system defensive line
- 11:46coach the NFL level recruiting aside.
- 11:49Like, what's the biggest difference between those two
- 11:51that you've seen so far in like, a few months in the NFL?
- 11:55I will say that the biggest thing is that now you're dealing
- 11:59with grownups Meaning that in college the main goal is to push
- 12:05these guys from childhood to adulthood, you want to help this
- 12:09guy become better men in every aspect academics, social skills
- 12:15who football knowledge and then give them the get them across
- 12:18the line to get their degree. Whereas now, the NFL, this is
- 12:22now a job and you have to continue to stress that to these
- 12:26guys, especially ones that come in force that I have to do that
- 12:28this year. But older guys to understand it
- 12:30even more, So like in a field means not for long like that is
- 12:34truly a real thing and I was fortunate and blessed to play
- 12:38longer than the 2.7 year average but you're stressing.
- 12:44This is a job like if you don't get it right?
- 12:48Yeah. That will find somebody else
- 12:50that will. So every day you need to step in
- 12:53this building for the kids that got to be need to get out of bed
- 12:56with a clear-cut focus on what you're trying to accomplish and
- 12:59what you're trying to do. Because this is Benefit, you
- 13:02want to benefit your family and you're playing a child's game
- 13:06for a king's Ransom. So you need to maximize every
- 13:09opportunity. You have to have to play this
- 13:11game in earn a way of life for your family.
- 13:16Whereas in college these guys still kind of you still trying
- 13:18to get them out of the high school thing where like, all
- 13:21right I can mess up today. I still be good tomorrow.
- 13:24Don't worry, I didn't feel especially right now like all
- 13:26these guys as much as we love them all, they're competing for
- 13:30a spot competing for opportunity to plan is leader only 1800
- 13:32Dobbs, so you got to make your mark every day in everything
- 13:36that you do and be mindful of that.
- 13:38That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 13:42That's the big thing for me to like when we look at the
- 13:45difference like you said you're dealing with kids coming out of
- 13:48high school. They're not used to the that
- 13:51paper grind that right when you're in the NFL every day
- 13:55counts because the next day isn't promised, no doubt about
- 13:59it. Also before we get into more
- 14:02conversation here with Darryl Tapp we are going to take a
- 14:05quick pause for a quick message from our digital Partners.
- 14:09Alright DTaP. We're going to get back into it
- 14:10here. We're going to Pivot more, two
- 14:12more hokey, specific stuff Downs.
- 14:14That Curtis has had his moment in the sun here.
- 14:20So you know this year you're working with chriskiss Erick
- 14:23last year you were working with Bill tearling who was close to
- 14:26my heart as a Colts fan the name clearly you know, Right out the
- 14:31gate. I was like oh we got Bill coming
- 14:33in. Okay, okay so I mean not many
- 14:36guys, gonna change the coach with that level of guys that
- 14:39have done it in that the NFL, what was it like to work with
- 14:43Bill last year? It was good honestly.
- 14:47Coach ham and coach football coach went to and Coach ham did
- 14:51a great job of assembling staff for people that care.
- 14:55Now, with that said, it was a beast last year because you do
- 14:59it so many things that it did. Ed with the wrong of first and
- 15:01foremost. It was a brand-new Stan.
- 15:03We never really got a chance to really Vibe and click as a
- 15:07complete unit to a party later on in the season.
- 15:10So we'll still learning each other's strengths and
- 15:11weaknesses. And what everybody did best,
- 15:14then we're trying to install it brand new scheme to these guys
- 15:17via zoom and we were just learning Zoo myself.
- 15:19So you had to try to keep those guys attention there.
- 15:22So it was so many hurdles we had to get across, but I can tell
- 15:26you that on that defensive side of the ball, Yeah, we came to
- 15:30work every day with a clear-cut focus on how to try to get these
- 15:33kids on the same page. Believing the same thing and you
- 15:36started to see how much better we got towards the middle,
- 15:39latter part of the Season though, we saw a really good
- 15:41ball. So I got to imagine that was
- 15:44Spring ball this year trying to be in the same system and seeing
- 15:49the Pieces come together from a coaching staff and from a player
- 15:52standpoint that is going to be even more improved this year and
- 15:55get this thing right back on the way it needs to go.
- 15:58Love to hear that. Love to hear that about Bill.
- 16:00Love to hear that about the other parts of the defensive
- 16:03staff. They're absolutely.
- 16:05Let's talk about one of the bright spots of last year's
- 16:07team. Amari bar.
- 16:08No kid comes in. I switches positions works his
- 16:14way into the too deep. And then by seasons in, you
- 16:16know, he's one of the standout players on your unit, can you
- 16:20tell us a little bit more about amar'e's transition to defensive
- 16:23end? And at what point last year, did
- 16:26you know that he was going to be special at the position?
- 16:28Well, we already knew that Mari. Was he when a coach for Monday's
- 16:32favorite, guys? You know, he hadn't had the
- 16:34success that he wanted or Vision early on, but he played his tail
- 16:38off on special teams. He was in a linebacker world.
- 16:42So coach coach building myself and Coach Han, we want to coach
- 16:46food like let's please let her just this.
- 16:49The switch positions on this guy.
- 16:50Look at him. At the DS4 I can we gotta get
- 16:52our best athletes on the field like the teams that we're
- 16:55playing an agency were explosive on.
- 16:58The side, the ball. We have to build a match that
- 17:01with the same kind of explosion, same kind of speed and evil side
- 17:04of. Also coach Fuente.
- 17:07Allow does it to entertain pushing mono to, then he had a
- 17:12conversation with Bruno's, mom, want to make sure everybody's in
- 17:16the loop and everybody feel good about the transition.
- 17:19And then from that point on Maria and myself and Coach Zack,
- 17:22RGA that point in time, we spent time with him going over foot.
- 17:26We're going over hand placement. Burning pass rush though.
- 17:29Cut out something else completely foreign to him.
- 17:31Yeah we played well I'm back. So we had to get to the point
- 17:35where it did that the Roanoke knock some guys out for a couple
- 17:39weeks and you had a couple injuries as always having the
- 17:41football. And next thing you know I'm
- 17:42already starting games and playing with Elite effort and
- 17:48Amari or Bardo is a smart smart cat and he understands Concepts,
- 17:55he understands what to do and he's use their cap.
- 17:57You can tell him once. Maybe twice he got it, okay?
- 18:00So the reefs of bound that he made last year during the
- 18:03season, really not having an offseason to murder stuff.
- 18:07Like we're literally learn on the fly every day after
- 18:09practice. So dish, I said this year, this
- 18:12opportunity has OTAs Primo like he could completely take off and
- 18:17if he's fortunate enough to get to combine, it's a wrap because
- 18:21he's super athletic. Yeah.
- 18:22So all the, all the cars and all the dominoes are stacked in his
- 18:26favor and I said, just continue to progress.
- 18:28Far as learning the defense learning how to be a defensive
- 18:31end and then learning the fundamentals and techniques you
- 18:33need to succeed that it could be.
- 18:35It could be scary this year. Can I have some yeah, follow up
- 18:38on that. What when was it like?
- 18:41Was it the first time he practiced at defensive end where
- 18:43you like? Oh boy.
- 18:55Oh, he's big and can move. Okay, okay.
- 18:59Sandwiches calls right? Oh man, that's great.
- 19:06That's great. You know we love watching bar no
- 19:09progress last year. I mean, that was, that was kind
- 19:11of one of the big highlights that we had to the season.
- 19:12So it's good to hear that, that transition kind of went like,
- 19:16like, like we were talking about there.
- 19:18Let's talk about another guy, Jordan Williams.
- 19:22He was a big ad from the portal. Just before you took the 49er
- 19:25job, he made a point. To mention relationships with
- 19:29you and Coach Fuente as to, why he ended up coming to the
- 19:32Hokies. What was it?
- 19:34Like, helping recruit a high-profile transfer portal
- 19:37player like Jordan. And like, what's the biggest
- 19:40thing that he's going to bring to the table for the Hokies in
- 19:422021? Well, it was cool that we were,
- 19:45always always scaring the the portal for Gaza.
- 19:48Can help your team. That's kind of where college
- 19:50football is kind of come to right now.
- 19:54But with him being a guy from the 757, it hit close.
- 19:58At home, they'll Coach, Rick kills already familiar with
- 20:01them. From being like, I think it was
- 20:03top. I think it was, it was between
- 20:04Tekken clips and before he made it sound, as you know, the club
- 20:07set. So coach Fuente always wanted
- 20:11Jordan to be a part of the family will meet being a 757
- 20:14guy. I want all the best guys from
- 20:17that area to come here to have the same experience that I had a
- 20:19Virginia Tech so it was Elite like soon as he was officially
- 20:24in the portal. I was on, go get him out.
- 20:28All right, it wasn't it wasn't a sale job.
- 20:35That's not something that I believe in is not something that
- 20:37coach hand believes and or coach Fuente, we will tell you the
- 20:39truth and who better to tell you the truth, then a guy like
- 20:43myself that played there, graduated from there and three
- 20:45and a half years. Got the opportunity to play in
- 20:48the league from the exact same place you are.
- 20:51So we were there to connect on that I was able to connect with
- 20:53his mom and dad on the on opportunity they had ever
- 20:57diente. It just, it is, everything is
- 21:01fun in place and I think for him being that he was at Clemson, he
- 21:05played it. I think what three or four
- 21:06straight plays its the other, is he a, a playoff brackets and
- 21:11want a pink one or two? Maddie's like he has a wealth of
- 21:14knowledge and wealth of wisdom to give to your guys.
- 21:17And when you have a guy like that elevates, everybody's
- 21:20plate, everybody's production and even as coaches, it elevates
- 21:25you because you want to make sure that you're putting
- 21:27everybody in the right. Position to accomplish the team
- 21:30going to come to their individual goals as well.
- 21:33So he adds so much to this picture, he can really take all
- 21:37this year. I know that he's been doing very
- 21:41well. Condition-wise went from
- 21:43Colorado's is I went to work out what through Spring ball like
- 21:46guys respect him and what he brought to the table and he has
- 21:50a chance to really make a huge name for himself in the ACC and
- 21:54hopefully put himself into running to be drafted next year.
- 21:59Absolutely. And you know, speaking of the
- 22:01757, you know, before example and 75.
- 22:05Yeah. Have water.
- 22:07Some fans, have you want to call it before you approach for the
- 22:1149ers? You know, you were kind of
- 22:14starting to run the point on the 757 recruiting and in Virginia
- 22:18Tech football. Um, My Relations, which is one
- 22:21of our guests to white dick. Looks like he's taken that baton
- 22:24from you and starting to run with it on his own.
- 22:26Right. But yeah, what are some of the
- 22:28challenges? Challenges down in the 75 and
- 22:32the alumni fronts today that may not have been there when you
- 22:36were first getting the tech back in the early 2000s.
- 22:40Probably the biggest thing is that you have a coach has only
- 22:43been there for it now six years. No one, I can detect Beamer and
- 22:48Coach Foster and clockwise already been there for 16 years.
- 22:50Yeah, you know, so there's a level of continuity and
- 22:53stability that was established and it was already running this
- 22:57course where you have New guy coach Fuente.
- 23:01That was not coach Beamer. Everybody that's a college
- 23:06football fan, especially the tech fans.
- 23:08They understand stuff within a certain way in Blacksburg and
- 23:11that's what is used in 434. 29 years coach Beamer for 32 years
- 23:14of Coach, false and Coach Wiles. That's how stuff was done.
- 23:18So we could have been coach false, they could have came
- 23:19bench. Coach Fuente, could have been
- 23:21coach Smith or Coach, Joe whoever it was that came in
- 23:24after coach Beamer, it would have been the exact same boat as
- 23:27coach Fuente is in now. And he's continually to try to
- 23:32lead and do things his way still got to pay.
- 23:34Homage the code way, coach Beamer distance, but this is
- 23:36coach Fuente program, and I think that's why they've been
- 23:39the biggest hurdle that him and the staff that he's continued to
- 23:43put together. Have always had to overcome and
- 23:47stuff. Was done a different way.
- 23:48Back when I was coming out, like we had to make our highlight,
- 23:50takes on VHS, the poly people on this.
- 23:53On this, it is this called, I know what VHS is, probably,
- 23:57right. Where is now as a college coach,
- 24:03if you talk about a kid that's out here in California and I'm
- 24:05in Blacksburg, I can be on the phone with him, recruit him in
- 24:0730 minutes or less at the scene as highlight tape.
- 24:09I got his transcript like you just a different way so the
- 24:13relationship that were built back then it was certainly was
- 24:16done back then that's not necessarily done now because now
- 24:19you have a bigger footprint and now you having to compete with
- 24:22more people, like it was unheard of for Notre Dame or USC or
- 24:28Arizona. Of these schools to come to
- 24:30Virginia to get kids. Could they didn't know about.
- 24:33So now you have to do with that this whole explosion of
- 24:35recruiting and you got to be on the even more so where it seems
- 24:39like wow you know some days you have it like waxing like take us
- 24:42do not offer the everybody or somebody like that's kind of
- 24:45weird. He is like you have to be on an
- 24:46extremely fast. Do your evaluation and try to
- 24:49get these connections because every school across the nation
- 24:52has access to any kid out there and 75 78, the best kept secret
- 24:56that it was back in the 90s and early 2000s.
- 24:59Because you mentioned something and I'll ask you this, you know
- 25:03you are getting recruited 01:02, right?
- 25:06You signed out to the cursor is what was the farthest school?
- 25:09You got an offer from Notre Dame Notre Dame.
- 25:12Okay yeah and Kevin Rogers who was the the quarterback coach
- 25:16you because your Tech? Yeah he was the one he was and
- 25:21then I didn't hear from him for like a couple months.
- 25:39University of Virginia Tech University of Maryland and
- 25:43Florida and Florida is one of those schools that was kind of
- 25:47unheard of to. But the reason why Florida
- 25:49became a school for me because my middle school, principal
- 25:52Debbie still works her brother with the d-line coach.
- 25:55Ricky hungry. What the coach do you like coach
- 25:57at Florida? So what He offered me a floor
- 25:59tile. That's why I'm a me.
- 26:18Because if we do think about it, I mean, we roughly all the same
- 26:21age, I'm seven. I know y'all are in y'all's
- 26:25thirties as well, but it has changed when there was no
- 26:28Facebook. There was no Twitter, there was
- 26:29no Instagram. We couldn't live stream, this
- 26:32back in the day, not at all. It's instant connections.
- 26:36And, you know, we kind of sit here and say, well, why is why
- 26:40can't we do as good down there? And it's like, because everybody
- 26:44knows about down there. Yeah.
- 26:46ADI. And everybody's making the
- 26:48offers and now, you know, you've got, you've got programs that
- 26:51have private, Justin coaches can jump on and put like to ask you
- 27:02about a mindset, you know, you mentioned it earlier covid
- 27:07created. A lot of really difficult things
- 27:09in terms of installing and Justin elements of Defense in
- 27:132020. I mean I didn't happen to bring
- 27:15y'all Wade. That fall Camp was y'all had
- 27:18some camping then, a gigantic break for the first game and you
- 27:22kind of mentioned it earlier but go into it, a little deeper with
- 27:26the benefits of a pull off season what aspects of the
- 27:28defense can we as fans and somebody like Brian who played
- 27:32the game, what are we going to see different this year?
- 27:352021 from James D? I think this consistency like
- 27:41Last year it was only so much stuff we could do because from
- 27:44week to week you without 10, to 20 players, I mean, think about
- 27:49it, we play UNC. We were, we were, we were
- 27:53starting a walk-on safety. Yep.
- 27:55Now Matheny plate is, but often but just tested the athletic
- 27:59disparity was so wide that, but in the game was nothing he could
- 28:03do. I mean he went again, he went
- 28:05against two running backs or drafted in the first three
- 28:07rounds this year, I was nothing that he could really do.
- 28:10So, Diablo missed a lot of games.
- 28:13He's a third-round pick, so you have Caleb Fairley.
- 28:16The first round pick. He didn't get to play the whole
- 28:18season. So it was a lot of things that
- 28:20cause it presented to us and we was really on our heels, just
- 28:23trying to fight back and try to scheme up.
- 28:26Stuff to go against teams are going the same way.
- 28:29It was a, it was a league-wide or a nationwide thing with
- 28:33everybody had to deal with, but just for us, like, it was
- 28:36extremely tough because on top of we're, installing the System
- 28:41with brand new coaches. Like I first three games.
- 28:43We didn't have a coordinator nice and they'll adjust.
- 28:46It was. Yeah, it happened that it was a
- 28:50perfect storm of bad stuff. Yeah, I was, I was always
- 28:53comparing it with Kurt. I was like, you know,
- 28:54everybody's got one hand behind their back this year, but it
- 28:56feels like if you're installing new defense, you got both of
- 28:58them on your back. It's a wrap, will turn back a
- 29:06little bit because we got to ask you some questions about your
- 29:10time. Matt Tech, you know, bride and I
- 29:15his first game with Rutgers 2002, you play with my first
- 29:19game was UCF, opening weekend 2003, you played.
- 29:24So literally, as at first trips. Tulane Stadium Darryl Tapp was
- 29:30on that ground but the Hokey lure.
- 29:34And we we met you four years ago.
- 29:36It's bringing we even talked about it.
- 29:38Once you've got the lunch pail. Yes sir.
- 29:40You never let it go until you graduated.
- 29:43And then Bud had to literally get another lunch pail, because
- 29:45you took it with you. Correct.
- 29:47I did. Yeah.
- 29:57Everybody on the team to get that.
- 30:00But when you showed up in 02 year freshman, was there anybody
- 30:04on that team in 2002 that help drive you to be that?
- 30:08A player and you play with some good ones, man.
- 30:10I can think I know. Jake Groves was on that team.
- 30:13Well, familiar with Ron Weasley maybe.
- 30:17Yeah. What was it one guy.
- 30:19Like when you got there, you saw them on that field.
- 30:22Practice field. And again, we were like that's
- 30:24what I'm going through. Honestly, yes and no.
- 30:29Okay, first it, first and foremost, I'm a extremely
- 30:33family-oriented guy. So my heroes is my mom and dad
- 30:36and my two older brothers That's the way.
- 30:38I was raised like the stuff wasn't done, right?
- 30:41I would do it again. They told me to ride my bike
- 30:44from home to practice partly because no Mom was running
- 30:48everywhere else doing her own daughter stuff with the support
- 30:50of family, her and dad, and I had no other way.
- 30:53So, you know, anybody can get get the going and then to like
- 30:59playing sports growing up, was a privilege that could be revoked
- 31:03quite easily, if your grades and chores will weren't up to par.
- 31:08Now was I got to take I was going to Tech with a bunch of
- 31:12guys from Deep Creek, right guys, that I looked up to do my
- 31:16teammates Vegas Robinson, James Anderson DeAngelo Hall and I was
- 31:21going with guys from Tech from the creek to take Josh.
- 31:24Hyman all these guys were all together, so we always push each
- 31:28other growing up as kids think that's what we want to do.
- 31:31We had a clear-cut vision when the conflict when he got to
- 31:34take. Now once I personally got to
- 31:36take the deal on room He's a veteran Laden Group, I think our
- 31:40team with a veteran Laden team where the coaches really had to
- 31:43do very little to get us going. Okay, if I wasn't doing, I posed
- 31:46to do, Lamar Cobb cols colas the Pella DV Jim Davis.
- 31:55Tim saying is like, all these guys would put their hands on me
- 31:58to make sure I was going to write you learn real quick of
- 32:04your business and fall in line with what we're trying to
- 32:06accomplish and you I'll be the best player to you can be and of
- 32:10course called your Wiles. You know, he had a he had a
- 32:12reputation for helping guys to reach levels that they haven't
- 32:16seen. So for me it was just the
- 32:18perfect storm of stuff being where I was raised when I
- 32:20Envision, what I want to do with the teammates that I had played
- 32:22with. And I said, walking into a
- 32:24veteran late and team kind of created the person that I became
- 32:28once I got today. Awesome.
- 32:31Yeah, it's nice having guys that you're familiar with that, you
- 32:34have that Comfort level with it. You know we're going to push you
- 32:37and tell you when you're not you know carrying carrying the
- 32:40weight no doubt and that's always good to have.
- 32:43I had some teammates like that, I played a little ball in hand
- 32:46and Sydney, I played high school ball.
- 32:49It's always good. Having you have a boy that you
- 32:50can trust that know that they'll call you out when you're not
- 32:53doing the right thing, no doubt about it.
- 32:56So you go ahead Curtis, I'll let you finish what you got last
- 32:59one. There anybody ever on the online
- 33:02that either a you were like oh this is gonna be the dogfight
- 33:06and I will help out. Why do you have to remember one
- 33:08guy from anybody, Jeff King? Who's that JFK JFK all the time.
- 33:13Okay man, I played against him in high school if you'll ask you
- 33:27to, that was crazy. Technically sound strong like
- 33:33unassuming, but you'll put his hands on you.
- 33:36Oh man here, I mean that's even better to hear about.
- 33:39Did you think about King and his work ethic because he's busted
- 33:42his butt to get? I mean right he's borderline.
- 33:46I think of Carolina doesn't have a good season.
- 33:48I think. Jeff King might get that GM job
- 33:51down there and bride. Of course you had to play
- 33:53against them up a few Lasky. It's funny again.
- 33:56It's the connections man, it's no doubt it's while Ow.
- 34:00So we're going to be straight up.
- 34:03Okay? 2004 team, it was picked to
- 34:08finish in the bottom half of the ACC fools fools and that ain't
- 34:17how it went down. And obviously Miami game.
- 34:20Me and the man comes over to my apartment at Longwood, 1:00 kick
- 34:25and cracking beers with watching that game screaming at the TV
- 34:29for you guys. That's feasible, is a very
- 34:32special place for us. I think probably.
- 34:34Because Brown was at Sydney. I was at Longwood, we got to
- 34:37watch some games together when he wasn't playing for our game
- 34:40early, it just holds a very special place in our heart.
- 34:45Be Rands. Brother was Siegel has ra.
- 34:51Yeah, it's Brandon and Paul what was so different about that
- 34:57year? Because it was it was something
- 34:59special. Back in 2004.
- 35:05So I think was a sign of it was we took it as a challenge, we're
- 35:13just leaving the biggies, had finished a year horribly, think
- 35:17we lost like three out of the last four games.
- 35:19A year that we won. Those guys went to bees.
- 35:22And then you got opportunity to go into the ACC.
- 35:25And of course everybody knows like with the whole ordeal to
- 35:28get us into the ACC in the whole night, they were trying to leave
- 35:29us out. And then the way, the powers
- 35:33that be set up, the ACC is they set it up because they weren't
- 35:36in Miami and Florida State to play in the championship.
- 35:40No, to put it in, put them in different bracket so you can set
- 35:41it up, but they put us and UVA and the same bracket like, okay,
- 35:44this wasn't done with that. It was just trying to get more
- 35:47teams in here so they can have it.
- 35:48So, we do the same disrespect and we came out the gate.
- 35:52We knew we had USC coming out, the gate.
- 35:56So our Focus was streamline, the guys that were coming up coming
- 36:02in age becoming the Juniors. We're trying to take the team
- 36:05over. That was our total mindset for
- 36:09the whole season going into training camp and we caught fire
- 36:14and believe in one another. Like you still.
- 36:17Can't come to this day bed, and I hate to blame every blame
- 36:19thing on the rails. But the rails affected the USC.
- 36:22Damn, right. Josh Lyman.
- 37:07The name of the game was changed in like Biggie's was a run-run
- 37:12dominantly. So we had a bunch of guys that
- 37:14kind of play that system. And those guys are kind of
- 37:17graduated moving out and as we move into the ACC, that's when
- 37:20more athletic players that we had were kind of coming to age,
- 37:25and we just kind of took off, I don't think that they were ready
- 37:28for this type of physicality that we had the way coach
- 37:31Gentry, got us prepared to play each and every season, but
- 37:34especially that season to make our first impression would it
- 37:36was the My said that we had to go out there and let them know
- 37:39that we're not, no, no, no Cakewalk that, that showed on
- 37:43Saturdays and we did we did our thing.
- 37:47It was exciting to be a part of noticing that the Rejuvenation
- 37:52of hokey football. Yeah.
- 37:54You know the attended detail that we had it was a it was a
- 37:58fun time and it was a lot of lifelong bonds relations mean it
- 38:02was it was nice to kind of put a stamp on the ACC saying, hey,
- 38:07Here, we're here. We're about to run the rest of
- 38:09the we're about to run the rest of this decade.
- 38:15All right. So I'm going to Pivot a little
- 38:16bit here to somebody that's near and dear to pretty much every
- 38:19hokey fans Hearts Bud. Foster, you know, obviously
- 38:26hokey Legend Best to do it. In my opinion.
- 38:31What are some of the lessons are habits that you learn from Bud
- 38:34during your time in Blacksburg? And I that you kind of still
- 38:38carry today or still kind of put those two action today.
- 38:42The intensity for the game and for being consistent in the way.
- 38:47Karen. So you couldn't tell if coach
- 38:50Foster was pissed. Happy sad intensity intensity,
- 38:57intensity. And you got to see his passion
- 39:00and love for the game through that you know and it wasn't just
- 39:03on the football field like he cares about you as an individual
- 39:07person. I coach Foster still to this day
- 39:09will still call and text me just Economics.
- 39:12He was going on. Coach dimmer.
- 39:13Does the same thing coach times. Bring with my recruiting coach,
- 39:16no line coach. At that point in time.
- 39:17It still does the same thing, Mike?
- 39:20That's the way those guys were, and that's what, that's all, we
- 39:23knew. So that's the same way I try to
- 39:25carry myself when I was in the Collegiate level.
- 39:28And even now, this low like trying to create a bond with
- 39:30each individual player because I still say it now, saying, to the
- 39:35day I retiring, like, If you show that you can help a player
- 39:39and you genuinely care about a player, you could tell a player
- 39:41that the sky is green and because of that, much love and
- 39:44respect he has for you in the way your opponent to him.
- 39:47He'll be like, you know, what coach tablet is green will be
- 39:49doing now, you know, you got to make those relationships, you
- 39:52got investment people, so, they know that you have the same goal
- 39:55that they want to accomplish, you want to try to help them,
- 39:57get there, that's something that coach false are always talking,
- 40:00always brought to us, And probably the coolest thing of
- 40:05coolest moment with coach for also with at NC State game, like
- 40:07we have played our tails off, he got the ball back to your
- 40:09offense, but their defense was some some unreal that year they
- 40:13had like three, four, four first-round, picks on a deal.
- 40:16And three of them came out with me, but to, through material to
- 40:19in Cairo, me and to him came out like the year after.
- 40:22But we did everything we need to do, we put the ball back in
- 40:24offices hand and let them work. He like that's one of you
- 40:27brought the whole defense up said, look I appreciate
- 40:28everything job was the other day.
- 40:31And that's something that's always understood before me in
- 40:33that moment. While the game was still going
- 40:35on there driving to pull us up and let us know.
- 40:36Like that means everything, could we know that we're just
- 40:40not a commodity like, they truly, truly cared about us and
- 40:43we're trying to come and do like that was, that was pretty
- 40:46special, that's to remember. That's awesome here.
- 40:49And like I said, so many hockey fans like you hear stories about
- 40:53just how much you could tell that bud cares about you cares
- 40:56about the game and just put everything into the game when he
- 41:01showed up to work every day. So that's awesome to hear.
- 41:03We're going, we're going to Pivot a little bit here to some
- 41:06more. I'll call him fun questions.
- 41:09Not so much hokey related. Not NFL related.
- 41:12I will start out with this one because I'm the movie guy.
- 41:15Okay, Curtis Curtis likes movies but I I'm the big movie head
- 41:19here. Everybody has this like, it's a
- 41:23bad movie. Everybody knows it's a bad
- 41:25movie, but you love it. And every time it's on, you
- 41:28going to watch it. What's that movie for you?
- 41:36Wow. Apollyon go ask by Eddie Murphy.
- 41:44There we go, there we go. You know, Eddie Murphy even when
- 41:51the movies bad is still good because it's got Eddie Murphy in
- 41:54it. No no everybody's Watch Beverly
- 41:59Hills Cop 3, it ain't the original everybody.
- 42:09Trash Haunted Mansion. But I enjoyed myself.
- 42:17Okay. So this is kind of a question
- 42:24your personality but also what happened back in the day, you
- 42:29know, in the locker room, what were those three songs that were
- 42:34going to get played to get you guys ready and in no particular
- 42:39order and every day at Virginia Tech.
- 42:42So this is our hating early 2000s.
- 42:47With a three go twos. Hmm, it probably been in some
- 42:52some form of DMX rest in peace, rest in peace, something like
- 42:58this. Just listen.
- 43:03There it is. That's it.
- 44:03That's it. Don't slip.
- 44:19Gay men because that was the only championship game ever
- 44:21played in the Orange Bowl and y'all took it from him baby?
- 44:25Work them out. Yes.
- 44:28I wore more one more Banger from the early 2000s that was in the
- 44:31Hokies locker room. Hmm, there probably would have
- 44:35been one to Jay-Z. Something's That would have been
- 44:40a gift and a curse that I wanted.
- 44:41Came up your tune the curse. Okay.
- 44:44That sounds about right. The big boy.
- 45:08That's right. Oh, I can just carry that one
- 45:10device. Yeah, this is way better.
- 45:21You know we obviously we watched your career from the day you got
- 45:25there into the day retired and now it's fun for us just
- 45:28following you you know your career in coaching because you
- 45:32know obviously we were talking about it before we got on.
- 45:36You got that bug you know you went to Tampa Bay Wife and Kids
- 45:41living in New Orleans, you come back.
- 45:43They basically say, hey, you're hired, yeah, you're a coach.
- 45:50So I mean in, I see nothing in my opinion of knowing the
- 45:55individual, you are. I see nothing but good things
- 46:00ahead. I hopefully I see a Super Bowl
- 46:02ring the next time you work out, maybe know as you know, that
- 46:09would be sweet. I'm hoping you get it for you
- 46:12but I would like it like it to go another way, but if you ended
- 46:17up getting it, I would feel like this is s number two for me.
- 46:20That's all good. You guys are being child there
- 46:25tonight. This is Darryl, Tapp there a
- 46:27path is not Chop. Prime C, Glenn Curtiss, Wilson
- 46:31are not shy guys. We got it was funny Darrell
- 46:35again, I won't, we really appreciate this.
- 46:37We reached out to you in February and asked, would you
- 46:39like to come on? You were straight up with this.
- 46:41You said, give me a few months, your liking a few months, and I
