Latest / Sessions Canceled / Tabletop Shout Out: Cities Without Number, Wake The F**k Up Samurai
Transcript
- 0:08Everybody the GM fried their cranial implant and is now
- 0:18sitting comas host on the couch. It's going to have to get
- 0:23removed and they're going to be out of Commission for a little
- 0:25while. Couple of missions probably.
- 0:27So sessions cancelled. Yeah, he's like drooling into
- 0:30the sofa. Are we going to do something
- 0:32about him or? Nah, you just kind of wait it
- 0:36out. Not much you can do.
- 0:40He's going to have to get a new one though.
- 0:43Also we might need a new sofa, it's getting a little stanky
- 0:46over. There.
- 0:47Yeah, look how dude half his face is sagging.
- 0:49What are we do? The Ripper duck will fix it.
- 0:53It's fine. I fucking I'm not paying for it.
- 0:57I didn't say I was paying for it, I just said he fixed it.
- 1:00Fair enough. All right, it's finally time to
- 1:06hit the third, the third of the four without number games.
- 1:10Now 4. There was 3 recently Ashes
- 1:12without number just released, so now we're at 4.
- 1:16I don't know if he's going to stop at 4, but I also don't know
- 1:18what the next game would be because we got sci-fi fantasy,
- 1:22cyberpunk and post apocalypse. So kind of hit the main ones.
- 1:31What other? Maybe that will cure my ADHD.
- 1:36I could maybe see that, I guess I feel like I don't know.
- 1:45I don't know, yeah. Would he?
- 1:46I don't know if he could expand out a whole Mecca game just
- 1:50based on like there's Mecca rules and stars, obviously, but
- 1:53can he whole game that shit? I don't know.
- 1:55I think so maybe because you can go into like control schemes and
- 2:00then like user interfaces, operating systems, hard points,
- 2:07combat drones. I feel like it would it would
- 2:11need to have like Gundam Wing vibes.
- 2:16I don't think you're looking at the right.
- 2:17Creator for anime vibes. But here's the thing, Gundam
- 2:20Wing is like the least anime of the Gundams.
- 2:23I feel it's very like it's just. I feel like if Kevin Crawford
- 2:28were to do a MEC game you'd be looking much more battle tech,
- 2:34you know what I'm saying? Like the the grounded real robot
- 2:37type shit. I don't know Starz has such a
- 2:41like. Hold on that.
- 2:41That is battle tech, right? I'm not.
- 2:44Yeah, yeah, battle tech is real robot like it's.
- 2:46We get the top robot. Vibes, yeah, we get like chicken
- 2:49walkers from. I don't think it would be that.
- 2:51I think it might be something closer to Armored Core because
- 2:55it's not dirt farmer. Like it's not so grounded that
- 2:59like fantasy, you're a dirt farmer.
- 3:00You know what I mean? Like.
- 3:01That's true. I could see armoured core Which?
- 3:04Even that I'm in, I mean. Yeah, I don't think it'd,
- 3:09because I still think it'd be a little toned down.
- 3:11I don't know. I just feel like tonally he's
- 3:13pulling from older school than that, you know?
- 3:18Potentially. No, I don't know.
- 3:21I don't know if it's going to happen.
- 3:22Like I said, we just got ashes, so who knows what his next
- 3:25project is, but I'm sure it'll be something.
- 3:30But today we speak of Cities without Number, which is the the
- 3:34cyberpunk cousin to the other games.
- 3:37So Stars is our sci-fi game, Worlds is our fantasy game,
- 3:41Cities is our cyberpunk game. And I think cyberpunk might be
- 3:50the best like genre for the style of game that he does.
- 3:56Which I know might seem a little weird because OSR is obviously
- 4:01based on old school DND and so a lot of people think of it as
- 4:04fantasy. But I think the way that Kevin
- 4:09Crawford designs these games, it just the cyberpunk slips on
- 4:14there real easy. You know, just, it just fits the
- 4:20sandbox vibe, the gear, the I feel like it just fits so
- 4:24easily. There's also already a lot of
- 4:26cyberpunk stuff in Stars as like optional side rules type
- 4:30content. True, that's kind of why I feel
- 4:32like Stars is the best iteration of it.
- 4:34I just like I feel like there aren't enough sandbox style
- 4:40sci-fi games. Most of them are try to try to
- 4:44create some sort of older yeah, but nothing contemporary.
- 4:49Yeah. No, not, not.
- 4:51Well, yeah, nothing contemporary that I can think of.
- 4:55It's like if you're thinking about, you know, there's wrath
- 4:58and glory, which is Warhammer, but that's that's always going
- 5:01to have an overarching meta plot, right?
- 5:02It can't not. And all the other Warhammer ones
- 5:06like Dark Heresy and and. Well, you have like, you have
- 5:12Star Finder, but obviously that comes from Pathfinder.
- 5:15You have the Star Wars games, but like, you know.
- 5:18Star Wars even then, right? Like if you're if you're doing
- 5:23the Empire as the era that you're in, that's going to have
- 5:27to involve some meta plot. Yeah, I know.
- 5:30That's what I'm saying. Yeah, maybe Star Trek.
- 5:34I think the Star Trek game you could have just dicking around
- 5:37in the Federation maybe? Either way, I still feel like I
- 5:44don't know cities without number.
- 5:45I feel like was such an easy natural decision to make that it
- 5:51arguably fits the best. I don't know, maybe not.
- 5:56I haven't read ashes, although I mean I've read bits and pieces
- 5:59of ashes when it was in beta. So like maybe that'll maybe that
- 6:03one will hit harder. I don't know, hard to say, hard
- 6:05to say. So cities without number?
- 6:08Actually before we do that, you're all going to take your
- 6:11corpo fuck Corpo sanctioned medication that is hitting the
- 6:19subscribe button Cures all ailments including cancer.
- 6:24And any rumours you heard about you getting bone cancer from it?
- 6:28Speculation. Flander.
- 6:29Clearly speculation. Yes, for legal reasons.
- 6:32These are both jokes. Cities with that number, what's
- 6:39the deal? If you have not heard the our
- 6:43episodes on the other without numbers games, you're gonna
- 6:47probably be a little confused 'cause we're very much not gonna
- 6:50talk about the base core systems of this game because they are
- 6:53the same as they were in Stars and worlds.
- 6:56So if you'd like to know broadly about the base, like the core
- 6:59functionality of the game, yeah, go listen to the Stars episode
- 7:04episodes. Just do them.
- 7:07So we're going to skip over that shit and I'm going to reference
- 7:10those other games quite a bit. So if you're a little confused,
- 7:14that might be why. So like I said, Cities is our
- 7:21Cyberpunk Shuare. As with before, the design style
- 7:31is basically the same. It is a sandbox game with the
- 7:34same core mechanics as the other without numbers games with a big
- 7:38emphasis on quality GM tools and advice on how to run a sandbox
- 7:45game well, slash properly, however you want to phrase it.
- 7:48How to run a good sandbox game. I don't know if we've, I don't
- 7:57even know if we've had this conversation period, Isaiah.
- 8:00But where do you fall on the paradigm of like fan of
- 8:06cyberpunk? I really.
- 8:13Like that, deep in that like, yeah.
- 8:15No, I mean, I'd say I'm pretty deep.
- 8:16Like, you know, I, I grew up on Ghosts in the Shell.
- 8:20I don't think you can get much more cyberpunk than that.
- 8:23It's a thing where I I, I like cyberpunk in intense bursts.
- 8:29Yeah, but yeah, I don't think he can hold the candle to me just
- 8:35being a general sci-fi fan. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:42I don't know. Do I like cyberpunk more than
- 8:44broad sci-fi? That's a tough one.
- 8:46I'd have to really. I think I like sci-fi with a lot
- 8:53of cyberpunk themes smooshed in there.
- 8:57You know, I, I think I like it when it leans a little more
- 9:01cyberpunky. I'm like, yeah, I would say like
- 9:05I'm a decently big fan. I'm not, I'm not like absorbing
- 9:11everything cyberpunk, but like I have read Neuromancer and I have
- 9:15read Snow Crash, which are two of like the formative books of
- 9:20cyberpunk as a genre. I mean Neuromancer being the
- 9:24inventor of the genre and Snow Crash being one of the first
- 9:27high quality satires of the genre that did that thing where
- 9:31it was such good satire it actually was a better example of
- 9:35the genre than the original genre.
- 9:38Yeah. I mean, I think I'm about.
- 9:39I like the one. Punch Man effect, Yeah.
- 9:42You know, I grew up on, like I said, Ghost in the Shell
- 9:45standalone complex and and quite the fan of the cyberpunk, you
- 9:49know, series. Yeah, I mean, is Cyberpunk the
- 9:53the what's he? Oh God.
- 9:58Yeah, but what's the yes, Cyberpunk, the Mike's Pond Smith
- 10:01IP. I'm like loosely interested in,
- 10:04you know, like I watched edge runners.
- 10:05I know about the game. I've read Cyberpunk read a
- 10:07little bit, but I'm not like deep in the sauce.
- 10:09I haven't played 2033 or 20 or not 20.
- 10:12That's Metro. What's the no no, the older one,
- 10:18the one way before the the first incarnation he did.
- 10:22Oh God, what was it called? Oh, I don't know.
- 10:27Was it was the first one just called cyberpunk the.
- 10:29First one was just called. Cyberpunk, the year was 2020.
- 10:33That's what it was. Cyberpunk 2020, yeah.
- 10:38Anyway, I haven't played that game, although I've heard a lot
- 10:41of people say that game doesn't age particularly well.
- 10:43So, you know, which doesn't shock me, a lot of older
- 10:47tabletop games don't age very well.
- 10:50Hey, watch it. You know the the the second
- 10:53edition purists really do be getting loud in the comments.
- 10:56Not ours particularly, but any other part with it They.
- 10:58Get loud at a lot of people, but I still I don't know yeah, I
- 11:01don't I don't feel like older editions age well for a lot of
- 11:03games anyway. Yeah, OK, so I was just curious
- 11:08where we were both at, like this cyber public thing, you know?
- 11:10I mean, I haven't watched Ghost and I'm trying to think what
- 11:14I've done. I would have watched like
- 11:15cyberpunk anime. Why?
- 11:17I think once you finish, so now that you know what Samurai
- 11:20shampoo, I think that should be the next thing you watch, a
- 11:22standalone complex. That is such a jump.
- 11:27Also, listen, I maybe didn't like Samurai Shampoo as much as
- 11:30everyone was hoping so. I mean, I don't know, I think
- 11:35you probably liked it as much as I did, which is to say it's very
- 11:38good. But it does suffer from being
- 11:40episodic and the ending is kind of quick.
- 11:43Yeah, I have some complicated feelings about Samurai Shampoo.
- 11:46But the opening like 5 episodes are just absolute peak cinema.
- 11:51The beginning is strong for sure.
- 11:54I stand by Jean. Jean is my boy.
- 11:58My opinion did not change by the end of the show.
- 12:00Gene is cooler than Moogan. I'm sorry, I don't make the
- 12:02rules. Well, so you know what's funny?
- 12:03I was thinking about this in the car today.
- 12:05Gene is a Gene is a fascinating case study of he beats Karia in
- 12:10a fair one-on-one fight. Like he cheats to do it, but he
- 12:13does beat him in a fight. Yeah, but the only one Gene
- 12:17can't beat is Moogan because he just can't figure out Champloo
- 12:21as a fighting style. He just, it just doesn't compute
- 12:23in his head. So it really does do this really
- 12:26fun thing where it's all about the match up.
- 12:31Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I don't want to get too
- 12:38much down this rabbit hole. I mean, we can talk about Ghost
- 12:41in the Shell because it is like quintessential cyberpunk and I
- 12:44think. Ghost in the Shell is OG
- 12:45definitely, Especially when you're talking about Japan
- 12:48influences of cyberpunk. Definitely.
- 12:50Ghost in the Shell is pretty quintessential, Although I think
- 12:57actually now that I'm hold on Neuromancer.
- 13:02Look, when did that first come out?
- 13:05God, I think the fucking 60s. Yeah.
- 13:12No, not that they're making ATV show of Neuromancer.
- 13:17It's news to me that I just discovered right now 84.
- 13:21OK, so actually, yeah, 84. So is standalone complex old?
- 13:25Is ghost to the shell older? No 89.
- 13:30Oh, OK. Close.
- 13:32You can. Honestly, given what I know
- 13:34about Neuromancer, you can literally see a Neuromancer in
- 13:37it. Yeah.
- 13:39I mean, yeah. But like, this is the like
- 13:44second edition, right? This is second generation
- 13:46sci-fi, you could argue. So it's one of those things
- 13:48where it's like all the sci-fi that came out directly after
- 13:50doing you're like, wait the fuck?
- 13:53Yeah, yeah, well Neuromancer was originally called a just a
- 14:01sci-fi book to like the concept of fucking cyberpunk didn't mean
- 14:09exist really. All.
- 14:13Right, anyway, we're getting distracted.
- 14:17So what the what's the the game itself?
- 14:20All right, so as with the other Without number games, this game
- 14:24starts with character creation. So we're going to start with
- 14:28character creation. It is 90% the same character
- 14:34creation that is in Stars and Worlds, with two notable
- 14:41distinctions. The first notable distinction is
- 14:47every, every starting character, every PC starts with contacts.
- 14:54And contacts are, you know, they're they're friends, they're
- 14:57buddies, they're people you have a contact with in some capacity.
- 15:03You describe them, you give them a name, you give them a sentence
- 15:06about what you do and then a sentence or two about how you
- 15:09met them. And basically the idea is you
- 15:11can call on a contact if you need help with something.
- 15:14And that character creation you can either have, I think it's 22
- 15:21acquaintances or 1 friend. Basically, acquaintances will
- 15:27help you out but not go out of their way, whereas a friend will
- 15:32go a little bit more out of their way, but they're still not
- 15:35gonna like, you know, take a bullet for you necessarily.
- 15:39No rider die start unfortunately.
- 15:41Yeah, no rider does. It also specifically says
- 15:45they'll take on it says friends will do significant favors and
- 15:47take up substantial personal risk, but expect to be treated
- 15:50as actual friends. So from a narrative standpoint,
- 15:54you can't just treat them like, you know, summoned minions or
- 15:58some shit. The other big character creation
- 16:05change, and this is the really important one, is edges.
- 16:10So because of the because Cyberpunk doesn't operate on the
- 16:19concept of classes so much and more operates on the idea of
- 16:23archetypes, Cities without number took this game is
- 16:30actually classless. The other two without number
- 16:33games were like sort of classless in a way.
- 16:36This one is legitimately classless.
- 16:39Yes, I did think that was very interesting that they didn't.
- 16:42They just went whole hog, making it a completely classic system.
- 16:46We're kind of talking about that though, right?
- 16:47We were like, I, you know, will it get to a point where he just
- 16:50abandons the idea of class altogether?
- 16:52And no, I mean, I already knew he did that.
- 16:56I knew he did it in this game so.
- 16:58I did not. I was.
- 16:59I remember I brought it up. I just I.
- 17:02I thought, I'm pretty sure I told you.
- 17:07I mean, honestly, man, my brain's fried.
- 17:09So you may have I may, I might just remembering something.
- 17:12The point is, yes, it's completely classless.
- 17:14So instead you get edges. I don't like the name edges
- 17:19really that much, but whatever, just I don't know.
- 17:26So basically an edge. You can kind of think of it like
- 17:30a folk eye, but they're a little more powerful than folk eyes and
- 17:34they will fill out your character more than a focus will
- 17:40generally. So for example, one of the edges
- 17:43you can take is hacker, and that's the one that you're going
- 17:47to take if you want to be the group hacker most of the time.
- 17:51There's also one you can take killing blow, which is basically
- 17:57you're the street samurai who's really good at murdering or hard
- 18:01to kill if you want to be the opposite if you want to be
- 18:04difficult to murder. But yeah, so you you take an
- 18:09edge, you get a total of three. You pick 2 edges at character
- 18:14creation and then you will get a third one at level 5, I think it
- 18:23was, yeah, level 5. Also, if you rolled like crap on
- 18:30your stats, you can take the underdog rule where you get so
- 18:34of all of your attributes. After you roll your attributes,
- 18:38if they total up to a negative, you get a bonus edge.
- 18:43I did like this a lot. There is a slight cost you get
- 18:49this bonus edge, but you cannot improve your attributes at
- 18:53character creation. Or, sorry, you can't spend
- 18:59points to improve your attributes at character
- 19:01creation, no. Sorry, I don't wait.
- 19:06I don't think you can do it at all.
- 19:08You can't do it at all. That's what it was, yeah.
- 19:10You cannot improve your attributes during character
- 19:13advancements. If you get this bonus edge, you
- 19:15can still improve them via things like Cyberwear or Folk
- 19:20Eye, but you can't spend skill points when you level up on
- 19:23them. That's what it was.
- 19:26So, you know, there's a little, a little give and take on that.
- 19:30Those are your big two differences for character
- 19:32creation. Those are the main things.
- 19:33Like I said, the rest of it, you have your backgrounds and your
- 19:35foci and your gear and your skills and your attributes.
- 19:38That's all the the same shebang. It does briefly mention some
- 19:44skills or, or some foci could give you like vehicles or gear
- 19:49and it gives you a a budget to operate in if you take one of
- 19:52those focus. But other than that, yeah,
- 19:56you're operating at the same, you have attack bonuses and
- 19:58you're saving throws and all that.
- 20:00Yita, yatta, Hoo, ha, so on and so forth.
- 20:05And then of course also, you know, starting gear kits or you
- 20:08can buy gear, oh, and so forth. Does all specifically call out
- 20:14languages, which I think did. No, stars didn't call out
- 20:18languages, but worlds did, so did.
- 20:20Yeah. Then we get to the overall
- 20:24system. So there's not a lot of changes
- 20:28to the core system with cities, but there are a couple of
- 20:35important changes on combat specifically.
- 20:41So this core system is still broadly, you know, in role 2D6
- 20:44you add an attribute plus a skill against ADC.
- 20:49You have your saving throws, you have to roll over your saving
- 20:53throw score. So if your physical saving throw
- 20:55is 14, you have to beat a 14. You have the game still uses
- 21:01scene time, scene timing, and round timing around just
- 21:05generally 6 seconds. All that stuff is basically the
- 21:07same. This game does add in mission
- 21:09time, which is basically the dungeon timing system from
- 21:16worlds just turned into the mission time, but it's
- 21:19mechanically basically the same thing but the combat.
- 21:25We do have some extra sauce and it literally the book has a
- 21:29little pop out paragraph for this that specifically says for
- 21:34stars without number and Worlds without number it says the
- 21:37combat rules you will be familiar with.
- 21:39There are a couple major differences to keep in mind and
- 21:41it outlines them for you. So first one, characters will
- 21:45have both a melee AC and a ranged AC score for your gear.
- 21:51So you may have gear that is harder for you to get shot at,
- 21:55but easier for you to get stabbed while wearing.
- 22:01This is cool because a big element of cyberpunk, just as a
- 22:05genre broadly, is fleshing out the idea of gear builds, right?
- 22:11Like cyberpunk is a lot about what kind of sick gear you have
- 22:14and what kind of like knowledge and shit you have.
- 22:16So by having the split ACS, you can basically further specialize
- 22:20your build where you're like, I'm going to be a character who
- 22:22uses long range weapons only I'm going to take bonuses to that.
- 22:26I'm going to make sure I have armor that is specifically
- 22:29better against guns than swords. So I'm going to be so awesome if
- 22:33I have a rifle in my hands and distance.
- 22:35As soon as someone gets in my face, I am so and that's very on
- 22:39theme. Yeah, and I, I, I mean,
- 22:41personally, I like this a lot because it adds, I think a
- 22:44really nice sweet spot for realism that's not infuriating.
- 22:49So that can be an issue from time to time.
- 22:51It adds a little bit of customization, but it's not too
- 22:54out of hand because it is absolutely the kind of thing
- 22:58that could get out of hand. Yeah, the next important one,
- 23:01and this one's a big deal. So I mentioned with Stars and
- 23:07Worlds Without Number that you know, level 1 characters are
- 23:12decently squishy, but you can't, you will level up to the point
- 23:17where you're, you're a pretty thick lad.
- 23:19Eventually, you know, the wizard or the psychic are still
- 23:22decently squishy, but the other, you know, the warrior, the
- 23:25expert guys, you'll, you'll get decently resilient.
- 23:29This is a cyberpunk game though, which means lethality is quite a
- 23:33bit higher, but it also means there's ways to mitigate the
- 23:36lethality so armor has hit points or damage soak on it.
- 23:43So you know if your armor has 5HP or whatever it soaks 5
- 23:49damage for you during during a fight.
- 23:54Now this depletes during the fight.
- 23:58So if you get hit for five and your or let's say you get hit
- 24:03for eight damage and your armor has five soak or your your gear
- 24:07has five armor is how I should phrase it.
- 24:10Your 5 armor is lost. The remaining three damage goes
- 24:13over to your character. The five armor points are lost
- 24:17for the fight. They replenish once the fight is
- 24:20over. And the idea is that this is
- 24:24representing your luck holding out like your your, your luck of
- 24:29your gear not breaking on you. Basically, because a lot of oh,
- 24:34PCs are referred to as operators in this game.
- 24:38A lot of how operators are justified as being better than
- 24:43normal people in this game is they're just just a little bit
- 24:46luckier than normal people. They just have a little bit more
- 24:49on their side. You know, the bullet that should
- 24:52have killed him grazes him. The stab that should have gone
- 24:55into their kidneys just kind of, you know, gets around the edge
- 24:59of their stomach. Their armor holds out when it
- 25:01maybe should have. That's kind of how operators are
- 25:03justified as being better than regular people in this game
- 25:06because ultimately, operators are just normal people in this
- 25:09game. Like you might have cyberwear
- 25:13and shit, but everyone can have cyberwear.
- 25:15So it's not like AD and D or a World Without number situation
- 25:18where you're sort of like magically better.
- 25:21It's like you're a little luckier.
- 25:23You just, you just that tinge more a tinge luckier.
- 25:26And. Just like you built.
- 25:28Yeah, you're also you're also just slightly more skilled like.
- 25:32Just a little bit. I think you really have to sum
- 25:34it up with the zimple. I'm just built different.
- 25:36Yeah, you built, you built, you built different the operators.
- 25:39Are built different, I am just alternatively better.
- 25:42And then thirdly, there's an added mechanic which is the
- 25:49trauma target value. So when you're attacked, when
- 25:54you're hit with an attack, you roll a trauma die.
- 25:59If the trauma die of the weapon or the attack of whatever kind
- 26:05beats your trauma target, it is a traumatic hit.
- 26:10You then take multiplicative damage, so for example.
- 26:16I think I caught that. Yeah, so if your trauma value is
- 26:226, which is the D6 is the default, and then you can modify
- 26:25it with armor or cyberwear or foci or what, you know, there's
- 26:29lots of ways to arm to modify your trauma target.
- 26:32If someone has a rifle and they shoot you, the trauma die on the
- 26:36rifle is AD 8. If they roll an 8, the damage
- 26:40from the rifle which is 1 D 10 + 2 is multiplied by three.
- 26:45So it's kind of like exploding dice.
- 26:49No, it's not exploding dice because it multiplies the final
- 26:52amount. Right.
- 26:53But it's a similar thing where if you Max out it, it, it's kind
- 26:58of, I don't know how else to put it's it's, it's meaner than
- 27:02explosive dice. It it is, but it's the same idea
- 27:04where you hit a certain number. Now there's an extra function.
- 27:08Yes, now extra shit rolls up and now you might say like, OK, how
- 27:16Like OK, the damage is 3 timed is is that a lot of damage?
- 27:22You're dead. No, you're done.
- 27:26It's it's narratively just saying you just got domed like.
- 27:29Yeah, like so at level 1, your normal hit die if you don't have
- 27:34the hard to kill edge is AD 6. So AD 6 plus your con modifier
- 27:40is your starting HP. So you have 7 HP.
- 27:47If someone rolls trauma, trauma, a traumatic hit with a rifle,
- 27:52you're just done. You're down, you are cooked.
- 27:54You're not instantly dead. You are.
- 27:56You're downed. You do.
- 27:57You can still revive, like someone can still pick you up,
- 28:00but you're downed. So.
- 28:03And then even at higher levels, at level 10 your hit dice are
- 28:1010D6. So let's say you roll really
- 28:13well and you have 60 HP, 30HP from a a normal rifle.
- 28:20Mind you, completely unmodified standard rifle could do 30
- 28:25damage. So half your HP at Max level
- 28:29from a normal ass gun. Actually, it would be more than
- 28:34actually be more than that, because it'd be it'd be AD 10 +
- 28:392. So you'd be looking at what,
- 28:422030630236? Yeah, potentially 36 damage.
- 28:48So yeah, traumatic hits are bad. Now here's the thing though, and
- 28:57this is again, this is to enforce the cyberpunk nature of
- 29:03like, nobody is a superhuman, right?
- 29:05Shit can go really bad really quickly.
- 29:10But this also applies to the enemies.
- 29:13So you as a player, if you roll over your trauma die, can just
- 29:18Dome a really dangerous NPC in a single shot if you get lucky.
- 29:23So it does go both in both directions.
- 29:28And there are ways to also modify your trauma damage too.
- 29:35Like there are like cyberwear and shit that can modify that.
- 29:37So you know, it can be the lethality is high on both ends
- 29:43of the spectrum or both sides of the field I should say.
- 29:47Yeah, you hit hard. The last you get hit really
- 29:49hard. Yeah, the last big combat change
- 29:53is this game has permanent injuries.
- 29:57So if a target who has taken a traumatic hit during the fight
- 30:02reaches 0HP, you roll for a traumatic injury.
- 30:07Not just to be clear, not if the traumatic hit downs you, if
- 30:12you've taken a traumatic hit at all.
- 30:16So even if you get a traumatic hit but the the enemy rolled
- 30:20really bad on the dice, like maybe they rolled A1 on their
- 30:23die, so the traumatic hit is only like 3 or 4 damage.
- 30:28You didn't take a lot of damage. But if you go down, that
- 30:31traumatic hit turns into a permanent injury.
- 30:35And getting traumatic hit can have lasting consequences,
- 30:38right? And I, I was a little unclear
- 30:40about that. So like for example if you roll
- 30:43the traumatic injury right leg ruined, you can crawl at best
- 30:46when stabilized. Yeah.
- 30:49It doesn't say how to like some of these say how you fix it,
- 30:51right? Brain damage.
- 30:52You're in a coma until you get underwear.
- 30:58Any limb? Cyberware.
- 31:00Cyberware. Oh yeah, there.
- 31:01Sorry. I how did I miss that?
- 31:03It's right below the fucking table.
- 31:06I don't know, but yes. So you can take lasting
- 31:08injuries, but because it's a cyberpunk game, you can replace
- 31:11it with basic cyberware. You can also just get like basic
- 31:16prosthetic cyberware. It doesn't have to necessarily
- 31:18be like fancy roboleg. It could just be prosthetic leg,
- 31:23you know? Yes.
- 31:24It will still reduce your system strain though.
- 31:27It will take up system strength yes and it and it does you know
- 31:31you do have to pay for it and all that other shit.
- 31:33So like basically getting shot in the leg is a bad time, but
- 31:40you're not like it's not like AD and D situation or well, D&D is
- 31:45maybe not the best, the best example, but it's not like a
- 31:48fantasy game situation where, oh, I lost my arm and there's
- 31:51not a reliable way to get it back.
- 31:53This is cyberpunk. You have a very reliable way to
- 31:56get it back, but there is consequence.
- 32:01So again, going back to that idea of operators are just a
- 32:06little bit more lucky, just that tad little bit more skilled than
- 32:09everyone else. You know, you're going through
- 32:14the fight, you take everyone down, you take a traumatic hit.
- 32:16Oh fuck. But you make it through the
- 32:17fight. All right, Well, I have a
- 32:18cybernetic leg. I'm back again, You know, so it
- 32:22it it's brutal, but it has that push and pull.
- 32:26Like yes, it can be bad, but you can also mitigate the bad.
- 32:30There's always the there's a back and forth that you can do
- 32:33that you can access pretty reliably.
- 32:37Obviously, you know, eventually you will just like, have too
- 32:42much shit, but by that point you're all cybered up and fucked
- 32:47up and your character's probably not long for the world anyway.
- 32:51There is a small chance you instantly die from a major
- 32:55injury. If you roll, it's AD 12.
- 32:57If you roll A1, you do instantly die.
- 33:01Yeah, which I think what what percentage is that?
- 33:0812 you're looking at because. It AD 20 would be 5%.
- 33:15Seven point, either 7.5 or 7.25 that sounds.
- 33:26Right. Because if you have a 30, so if
- 33:30it if it's AD three, you'd have a 30% chance D6 you've got a.
- 33:3415-D12. 15 point 3.78% chance and you half that again to AD
- 33:4412, so 7.5. 88. Percent, 8% we're.
- 33:48Close 8 percent, 8.3 repeating percent what you're looking at.
- 33:57So yeah, so there is an 8% chance, but keep in mind that's
- 34:01an 8% chance after you've taken a traumatic hit and you've gone
- 34:06down, right. So you have to take the
- 34:07traumatic hit, which is already ran, you know, a chance not
- 34:12guaranteed. Then you have to go down after
- 34:15taking the traumatic hit. Then you roll on the major
- 34:17injury and potentially instant die.
- 34:19So it's not likely to happen, but it can happen.
- 34:24And then once you once you're out of the fight, that traumatic
- 34:29hit, you know, the traumatic hit thing resets.
- 34:31It doesn't carry from fight to fight.
- 34:35All this is a saying. The point I'm making at the game
- 34:38is like mean but fair in its meanness for the most part.
- 34:46It's a bit like Kane in that way, where there is like a yeah,
- 34:50it goes back to the the perceived difficulty versus
- 34:52practical difficulty. Like you can get mulched in this
- 34:55game, but there are enough safety Nets for you to not do
- 34:59that immediately. Yes, and this is also not even
- 35:02accounting for, again, edges and foci and gear and other
- 35:06cyberwear. And you know, there's all sorts
- 35:08of ways to modify a lot of these numbers.
- 35:10Also, if you have a cybernetic arm and you roll a major injury
- 35:15and it hits your arm, well, it was already a cybernetic arm
- 35:18anyway. You could just repair it.
- 35:19Right. So there's that element to it
- 35:22too. So there's lots of different
- 35:23elements going on here. In terms of other, like all the
- 35:29rest of the combat stuff is everything you've come to
- 35:32expect. You have your combat actions,
- 35:34you have main action on turn, instant action, that's all the
- 35:36same shock damage, initiative, covering and and positioning and
- 35:42modifiers and all that. Like dual wielding, rules,
- 35:46execution attacks. All that shit's still there.
- 35:52Nothing to say. We've already talked it to death
- 35:53from the other games. Healing also, same deal, all
- 35:58works the same. You do still have system strain
- 36:01in this game. System strain is mostly going to
- 36:04come from cybernetics and like poisons or drugs.
- 36:08That's the main way you're going to get system strain because
- 36:10obviously you don't have psychic characters healing you usually.
- 36:13Although you can implement psychic characters into this
- 36:15game because all of the without number of games can be cross
- 36:20played with each other and healing is roughly the same pace
- 36:28as it is in world. Yeah, then.
- 36:36So then we roll over to vehicle combat.
- 36:40So vehicles obviously pretty important component to the
- 36:48cyberpunk genre and I lost my spot.
- 36:58The vehicle rules are in Stars and they are similar, but
- 37:04there's just a couple of like little things I want to mention
- 37:06here and there. Vehicles do not differ very much
- 37:10from standard ground combat. You know, you roll initiative,
- 37:16everyone takes their action. The driver has to take an action
- 37:19to keep the car under control. Vehicles have AC, vehicles have
- 37:24armor. Vehicles can also take traumatic
- 37:27hits. So just like you can get domed
- 37:31and explode, the vehicle can also get domed and explode.
- 37:38But otherwise it's like it's all the same vibe vibe.
- 37:41It's assumed in terms of movement that if you're in a
- 37:44vehicle and your opponent's in a vehicle, you're basically
- 37:46keeping pace with each other. If you have 4 passengers sitting
- 37:50in the vehicle, everyone can take their action to lean out
- 37:53the window and shoot or do whatever.
- 37:55Although there's some penalties and shit involved.
- 37:57You know, all the usual stuff. It's there's nothing too fancy
- 38:01with vehicles, but that's good. That is how I would want it
- 38:04because I'm not trying to like, I don't want a whole fucking
- 38:07subsystem to drive the getaway car, you know?
- 38:10Yeah, I mean it it I, I like it more in no, so that I like it
- 38:15more. I expect it to be more
- 38:16complicated in something like Stars where your ship has to
- 38:19have multiple facets to it, right, Like you have the guns
- 38:22and the radar. Well.
- 38:22We're talking about spaceships, yeah.
- 38:24Yeah, yeah, when, when it comes to.
- 38:25Cars, this we're talking about cars or like a tank or like a
- 38:29VTOL and shit right? Like.
- 38:31That being said to be quite as crazy, Hellscapes had something
- 38:34like that because the other weapons had the attack ports and
- 38:36stuff and it is fun and maybe if you had like a tank or something
- 38:40I could see that. But yeah.
- 38:41I mean, you can still do a lot of that because of the open, the
- 38:44general like open endedness of how the game works.
- 38:47You know, you could still whip up something like that pretty
- 38:50easily because you know, you got to remember too, A big element
- 38:54of the without number games is that they are real easily open
- 38:59to adjustment. You know it's not it's not too
- 39:06deeply. You don't need a fucking, I
- 39:09don't know, calculus degree or whatever to like adjust the game
- 39:13right? So where was it?
- 39:20Oh. Once a vehicle is destroyed,
- 39:23however, there is a chance that all of the damage from the
- 39:27vehicle getting destroyed can roll over to you.
- 39:30So being in a vehicle when it gets destroyed is real bad.
- 39:34I do think that's pretty funny. It's like, I do I really have to
- 39:38roll for car accident? My RPG game says yes.
- 39:40Yes you do in this game. You do so if you take damage or
- 39:45the V Sorry if the vehicle's destroyed occupants take damage
- 39:50as if they were hit by whatever took out the vehicle with a luck
- 39:53save for half damage. So if a rocket launcher inflicts
- 39:5718 points of damage on a car and blew it to pieces, the
- 39:59passengers would also take 18 points of damage with a luck
- 40:03save to half it. So being in a vehicle when it
- 40:07gets blown up, not great also. If the vehicle was moving at the
- 40:13time it was destroyed or goes out of control, the the
- 40:16passengers can also take crash damage.
- 40:20Each carrot passenger rolls both a physical save and a luck save.
- 40:25If they make both, you're good, you're clean, you're out, you're
- 40:28safe. If you fail one, they take half
- 40:32their maximum HP in damage, which may leave them mortally
- 40:35wounded. Which is to say, mortally
- 40:37wounded is down, you're at 0HP. If they fail both they're
- 40:41mortally wounded and will suffer a major injury if they live.
- 40:46So crashing. If you if you survive, you're
- 40:49still getting good. So crashing also really bad.
- 40:55So potentially if you're moving at high speed and you get rocket
- 40:59launcher, the vehicle explodes. You have to make a Lux save to
- 41:02see how much damage from the rocket, rocket launcher hits
- 41:05you. Then you have to make another
- 41:07Lux save and a physical save to see if you take another stack of
- 41:11damage that is half your back's HP, or to see if you're
- 41:16basically OK from the crash or it gets even worse.
- 41:21So being in a destroyed moving vehicle is a bad time the game.
- 41:30So like I said, vehicles can also take traumatic hits.
- 41:32But it does say vehicles are immune to traumatic hits from
- 41:36any weapons that do not specifically note as being able
- 41:40to inflict them. In some cases the GM may, in
- 41:44some cases even that the GM, oh, even that may not be sufficient.
- 41:50AGM is within their rights to decide that an ordinary anti
- 41:54material rifle isn't going to be shooting out the engine block of
- 41:57a battle tank. So there is some GM adjudication
- 42:01on whether or not you can actually traumatically hit the
- 42:03vehicle. If you do traumatically hit the
- 42:08vehicle, it works the same As for a person.
- 42:14But as we established, if there's a person in the vehicle
- 42:17and you traumatically hit the vehicle, the rocket launcher
- 42:19that dealt 18 damage would then deal.
- 42:24What the Hell's 18 * 3? 18 * 3. 54 damage.
- 42:29Yeah. So, you know, even worse, you
- 42:40can also do a little maneuvering and like ramming actions and
- 42:44shit. Basically as part of your main
- 42:47action that you use to control the vehicle, you can try to ram
- 42:50a vehicle or out maneuver another vehicle.
- 42:54You know, you just you make a, a drive check, basically Dr.
- 42:58Dexterity or drive exert. If you hit a if you hit a target
- 43:08or hit a person, sorry, you deal the vehicle's Max HP in damage
- 43:15to the person. So the the vehicle has 30 HP you
- 43:18just deal 30 flat with a trauma die of AD 12, which is quite
- 43:23high cause most people their average their trauma die starts
- 43:26at their trauma target starts at 6 for three times damage.
- 43:31So you know, could be 30 damage or 90.
- 43:35Bro, hitting somebody with 90 damage, yeah that's magical.
- 43:40That'd be rude. So yeah, ramming in to shoot
- 43:43with a vehicle is dangerous. Reliable way to deal with high
- 43:46level enemies. Could be, yeah.
- 43:50The ramming vehicle also takes damage as if the target, as if
- 43:53the target vehicle rammed it in turn, so that's also worth
- 43:58pointing out yeah. Then it mentions briefly chases
- 44:05and pursuits. So not a whole lot to say with
- 44:10chases. But if you are on foot or you're
- 44:14in a vehicle, basically you will just make opposed checks with a
- 44:18bunch of there's two modifiers for vehicle chase and foot
- 44:21chase. You'll make opposed checks with
- 44:24those. You know both of those modifiers
- 44:27or both of those tables giving you a bunch of modifiers to look
- 44:29at. If you succeed, you catch them.
- 44:34If you fail, they don't. You know, it's pretty it's
- 44:36pretty quick. The game is not assuming you're
- 44:38going to be, particularly doesn't assume you're going to
- 44:41be super doing super long extended chase scenes.
- 44:46One thing that I will say is kind of funny, it specifically
- 44:51says hybrid chase if a group is on.
- 44:54If a group on foot is chasing a vehicle, they automatically fail
- 44:57unless the vehicle is forced into like tight confines or
- 45:00obstacles. If a group in vehicles is
- 45:02chasing a group on foot, they just automatically catch them
- 45:05unless they have some way to get away from the vehicle, like
- 45:08going into a building or alleyways or sewers or whatever.
- 45:11So you can't outrun the car, you need to outsmart the car.
- 45:17I actually appreciate this. This is this is one of those
- 45:19things again, when D&D is like, I have a horse, can I catch him?
- 45:23And then you're like, wow, what's the horse's movement
- 45:25speed? And you're like, it's 19.
- 45:27It's like, well, technically if he does his full action today,
- 45:31OK. Yeah, that whole kit and
- 45:35caboodle, yeah. Also like you have to take into
- 45:38account horse action economy as we as we had to learn with Sam.
- 45:42Horse action economy. Yep, Yep, yes we do.
- 45:49Shit, what was I gonna say? Oh, the oh.
- 45:54The only other thing to keep in mind with vehicle chases is that
- 45:56the vehicle's speed stat adds to the check that you're making.
- 46:03So like the faster vehicle is more likely to beat out the
- 46:06slower one because you add the speed check as a bums.
- 46:15Then we get into gear, lifestyle and services.
- 46:20There's like nothing to super add other than there's just
- 46:27basically there's, there's, there's just a lot like under
- 46:33the gears lifestyle and services and all that shit.
- 46:36There's just a lot of stuff because you know, Cyberpunk
- 46:41games. So you're dealing with lots of
- 46:42little pieces of gear, lots of different, you know, there's big
- 46:49tables of lifestyles per month, which will affect your system
- 46:53strain. Basically, if you live poorly,
- 46:55you have less system strain. If you live well, you have more
- 46:57system strain. There's wages for if you're
- 47:00trying to hire somebody or if you're the GM and trying to
- 47:03figure out what to pay what a person could pay the PCs
- 47:06reasonably or whatever. You know, there's fucking
- 47:10goggles and climbing kits and backpacks and fucking radio
- 47:15thingies and smart smartphone shit.
- 47:17Yeah, a lot of gear and shit. Because Cyberpunk game.
- 47:22This was my favorite part of the game.
- 47:23You. Don't have much to say on.
- 47:25It but I liked reading through all the different gear.
- 47:27Oh yeah, there's a ton of gear if you're a person who likes
- 47:30gear. Oh buddy, we got you covered in
- 47:32this game. I did skip over this.
- 47:38I'm skipping again. I'm skipping over stuff because
- 47:40we've already talked about with the other two games.
- 47:42Character advancement works the same, except you acquire edges
- 47:46as you level up. That's like literally the only
- 47:48difference I'm pretty sure if there is any other difference I
- 47:51missed it but I don't think there is.
- 47:54You can still craft and modify gear.
- 47:56It works the same as stars and worlds.
- 47:58Basically you have a certain amount of mods and gear that you
- 48:02can reasonably maintain. You know it takes you X amount
- 48:06of time to build the various mods.
- 48:08You have to have fix one or fix 2 to install the mods.
- 48:13All that same shit it all nothing to add.
- 48:16It all works the same, but it is still there, in case you were
- 48:19worried about it. Obviously armor and weapons is a
- 48:26thing, but there's so much I don't want, I'm not gonna.
- 48:32There's so much. The one thing I will note that's
- 48:37the worth pay worth mentioning with the armor.
- 48:42Well, actually, I guess I guess so like we mentioned, armor has
- 48:46ranged in melee AC armor has a damage soak value.
- 48:51It has encumbrance, which is the same.
- 48:53It has a trauma target modifier. So like a heavily armored suit
- 48:58gives you +3 to your trauma target.
- 49:01And then it also has a thing that says subtle or not, which
- 49:04is basically how obvious is this piece of gear you're wearing.
- 49:08So if you're walking into a nightclub wearing obviously
- 49:12armor, you know, people might be like hey bud, what what you
- 49:15doing there? There's also some armor
- 49:19accessories like riot shield, enforcement plates, joint
- 49:23replacement, couple of extra things and then an obsolete tech
- 49:29modifier which I thought was funny.
- 49:31It makes the gear cheaper but also worse.
- 49:34Yes, yeah, you get something like that with the the
- 49:36cyberware, you can get the second hand stuff.
- 49:38Yeah, and then second hand shit weapons.
- 49:43There's plenty of weapons, lots of weapons.
- 49:50Nothing to add. There's a lot of weapons, yeah.
- 49:52Lots of guns and shit, lots of things to do with the weapons.
- 49:57Unfortunately, we've sort of gabbed about how sick the, the
- 50:02way that the weapons are described again, how similar it
- 50:05is to like Fantasy Flight. You know, they they're very
- 50:07evocative and I give you just enough information to do the fun
- 50:10stuff that you want to do, but not so overly detailed that they
- 50:14bog things down all of like Shadowrun.
- 50:18And if you want to hear us talk a little more about the weapons
- 50:21Stars Without Number, we talked about them a whole bunch because
- 50:23Stars Without Number also has a Dick load of weapons.
- 50:28You can also add mods to your weapons and your armor.
- 50:37I what is there to say? You can add mods like I've
- 50:41talked about before. One thing that I do want to
- 50:47point out, actually, I think I put this in the Cyberpunk
- 50:50section, but if you look at the so the tables in this game,
- 50:55something he did that's really an excellent edition if the the
- 51:02thing in the table has like a special effect.
- 51:04So under like armor mods for example, it has the name all the
- 51:08way to the left all the way to the right of the table.
- 51:11It gives you a brief description of what the mod does within the
- 51:16table, like a one sentence description.
- 51:19And then if you decide that you want that, you can go and read
- 51:22the specifics of it below. For example, absorption pads,
- 51:27which requires fixed skill 2 to install cost 2000 bucks does not
- 51:32require any special tech. Special tech is like the ancient
- 51:35tech stuff in stars. It's like a, it's special, you
- 51:39know, special crafting components you need to have on,
- 51:42you need to have a certain amount to make some of the
- 51:44better modifications. And it says the armor gains plus
- 51:495HP of soak per fight. You know, oh cool, I want the
- 51:53plus 5HP. And then you're like, is there
- 51:55any other specifics I need to know?
- 51:57You can Scroll down and check what it says for the absorption
- 52:01pads. It just says kinetic padding is
- 52:03added to the armor, granting it five more hit points of damage.
- 52:06So per fight. That one's obviously easy.
- 52:08Some of them are a little longer than others.
- 52:11If you make it customized a specific user gains plus one to
- 52:15range and melee AC. This is for armor.
- 52:18If you go to a weapon mods auto targeting adds a + 1 bonus to
- 52:22hit with the weapon. Extended bag double s your
- 52:27weapon mag size. Heavy subot allows traumatic
- 52:29hits on drones and vehicles. Turns into an anti vehicle
- 52:34weapon. There's these little everything
- 52:37has these little short descriptors on the right of the
- 52:40table, which is really helpful, especially when we get to
- 52:44cyberwear because Oh my God, there's a lot of cyberwear.
- 52:48There's a lot of cyberwear. There's a lot.
- 52:51It's really as a preview. You have body cyberwear, head
- 52:55cyberwear, skin cyberwear, limb cyberwear, sensory cyberwear,
- 52:57medical cyberwear, nerve cyberwear and and mods for your
- 53:00cyberwear and cyberdex and you're yeah.
- 53:03And that's not even talking about your deck and all the
- 53:05like, crazy shit you can do with that.
- 53:08Yeah. So that little extra descriptor
- 53:12on the right, super helpful. Oh, and if I didn't say weapons
- 53:17work the same, the only thing that's added is weapons have a
- 53:20trauma die now, which we already talked about so well, a trauma
- 53:24die and a trauma rating. But yeah, other than that, do
- 53:29the same. Let's see, one actually one
- 53:35second then pharmaceuticals and St. drugs.
- 53:43It's a cyberpunk game, so naturally we got drugs.
- 53:48There's a plethora of drugs that basically are act as one time
- 53:54consumables which give you various buffs but often also
- 53:58come with a downside to them. Some of the drugs require you to
- 54:04know you have to have a certain amount of knowledge to
- 54:06administer them, so you need to have a skill at a certain rank.
- 54:09So if it says heal one, that means your heal skill has to be
- 54:13rank one to even administer the drug.
- 54:19To give you an idea of like what kind of shit they do.
- 54:21The descriptions for the drugs are really fun.
- 54:25So bone. Shaker yeah I was gonna say my
- 54:27favorite 1 is probably Control delete.
- 54:31I don't think I looked at that one.
- 54:34Bone Shaker. A filthy mix of jailbroken Korp,
- 54:37industrial chems and amphetamine scrapings, Bone Shaker is a
- 54:41popular combat drug and most amongst most impoverished or
- 54:44savage St. gangs. On application, the subject is
- 54:46filled with Blind Aggression, gaining a + 2 morale bonus and a
- 54:49+ 2 bonus to hit rolls, damage, and shock.
- 54:52The recklessness induced by Bone Shaker leaves them wide open,
- 54:55however, and all attacks against them add a + 2 to any trauma die
- 54:59rolls. Bone Shaker lasts for one scene
- 55:02and adds 2 system strain at the end of it.
- 55:04So effectively if you take it, you get a + 2 bonus to hit, a +
- 55:072 bonus to damage, and you do more shock damage.
- 55:11Shock damage is the automatic damage you do if you if you're
- 55:16attacking a basically a lesser armored opponent, but it means
- 55:20you are more likely to get hit with a traumatic hit, so
- 55:23obviously little risky. What does control delete do?
- 55:27A chemical that temporarily destroys a person's ability to
- 55:30form long term memories. Oh, Control Delete must be
- 55:33ingested in food or drink. Toxin filtering Cyber can fend
- 55:37it off, but it otherwise grants no saving throws.
- 55:39Once affected, the target will continue to act normally, but
- 55:42anything that happens to them between them between then and
- 55:44their next sleep or unconsciousness will be
- 55:47completely forgotten by the time they awaken.
- 55:50Yeah. You just you just no think no
- 55:53good. Yeah, you just, it's literally
- 55:54orb of confusion. It's it, Yeah, I like, so I
- 55:57really like the pharmaceutical because it's not just like
- 55:59combat stems, it's it's poisons. Yes, it is combat Sims and
- 56:04poisons it. Yeah, it covers both.
- 56:08I would have liked a few more of them, but there's enough that
- 56:11you can build out your own I think from this list pretty
- 56:13easily. I I was telling Josh before with
- 56:17each of the without number games, I've been like, oh, this
- 56:20is the character I want to play. I think for the two that I had
- 56:23in mind for cities was either like a a, you know, the the
- 56:28typical nightclub bartender who just poisons people, or the
- 56:33Johnny Silverhand, you know, guitar slangin Pistolero fan and
- 56:39guitar. Slangin.
- 56:40Dick Slangin. Yeah, sounded like Keanu Reeves.
- 56:45Yeah. Oh, and it and just for contact
- 56:49case anyone's curious like could he make that in this game?
- 56:52Well, one of the edges you can take is Voice of the People.
- 56:55You're a. Rocker, graffiti artist, poet,
- 56:57demagogue, or other rabble rouser with considerable
- 56:59reputation. You gain both levels of the Pop
- 57:02Idol focus and an additional friend contact related to your
- 57:05art and you go, OK, cool. What does the Pop Idol Focus do?
- 57:08Again, just in case you're curious, let me see if I can
- 57:11find it real quick. I can.
- 57:12You can. Mobilize mobs of your fans
- 57:14against people, Yeah. You gain performance as a bonus
- 57:18skill once per game week. With an hour or so of messaging,
- 57:21you can mobilize about 100 of your fans to perform some act of
- 57:23your choice, provided it's no more than mildly criminal or
- 57:26slightly dangerous. Flash mobs, getaway drivers,
- 57:28scout reports, tailing people, or instant parties might all
- 57:31qualify. Your fans don't have any special
- 57:33skills, but they'll do anything ordinary workers or civilians
- 57:35could do. If you mobilize them for
- 57:38donations or merch purchases, you get 1000 per character
- 57:41level, doubled at fifth level, and quadrupled at 10th level.
- 57:44You can't mobilize them to buy to buy your content more than
- 57:48once per month. At level 2, you can mobilize up
- 57:53to 100 fans per character level, which at level 10 would mean
- 57:5710,000 people. A lot.
- 58:01The wait, Did I do my math right there?
- 58:03Hold on. Wait.
- 58:04Yeah. 100 * 10, right? Yeah.
- 58:05Yeah, wait, 1000 people. Sorry, 1000 people. 1000 people.
- 58:09Jesus Christ I'm stupid. Though major mobs are likely to
- 58:13draw law enforcement, you've cultivated fan leaders who can
- 58:17pass along your wished wishes, deniably concealing your
- 58:20involvement. Your donation and merch earning
- 58:22amounts double your Charisma modifier increases by plus one
- 58:25to a maximum +2. So.
- 58:28Yeah. So if you take the edge, if you
- 58:32take that rabble rouser or the what, what was it?
- 58:35The voice of the people edge, you gain both levels of that
- 58:39focus right from the jump. So yes, they're rocker guys.
- 58:45Definitely on the table after pharmaceuticals.
- 58:54We have cyberwear. Oh, get your bippy ready.
- 58:58Yes, Sir. So first it talks about getting
- 59:08cyberwear installed and like broadly where you're going to
- 59:12find it. So to get it installed, you have
- 59:18to have a cyber, a cyber dock or a Ripper dock if you want to
- 59:21phrase it that way. I don't think they can say
- 59:24Ripper dock. I think that one's trademarked,
- 59:26but you know, essentially the the the cyber dock will make a
- 59:33check against a table. The table basically will dictate
- 59:36the time, the cost, and the DC with potential modifiers being
- 59:42added or subtracted depending on the situation.
- 59:45For example, if the Cyber Dock has a sterile medical operating
- 59:50room, they get a + 1 to their role.
- 59:53If they don't have an operating rule they get a -1.
- 59:58The cyberware is dictated. So it it goes how much system
- 1:00:02strain is the cyberware adding to to your body?
- 1:00:07Then it'll tell you based on that how much it costs, how long
- 1:00:10it'll take for you to recover, and the difficulty of the role.
- 1:00:14So if the system strain it's adding is .1 to .5, it'll cost
- 1:00:17500 bucks, take you one day to recover, and it's difficulty 8
- 1:00:21so not too bad. If the cyber doc fails the check
- 1:00:30by more than two points, the surgery fails, your system
- 1:00:33strain is is maxed out, you're reduced, and you're reduced to
- 1:00:37one hit point. You survive, but sorry, the
- 1:00:41cyber survives and you survive. But the cyber now counts as used
- 1:00:46for future implant purposes because you can't install used
- 1:00:50cyberwear. So if he fails by two or more,
- 1:00:55he fucked up. If he fails by one or two point,
- 1:00:58sorry. If he fails by more than two
- 1:01:00points, he fucked up. If he fails by one or two
- 1:01:02points, the surgery is successful but you suffer a
- 1:01:05random implant complication. The glitch isn't obvious until
- 1:01:11after the surgery is done. If you want to try again, you
- 1:01:14have to have the cyberwear removed and then re implanted so
- 1:01:17you can try again. But you know.
- 1:01:20Takes a little mean. Yeah.
- 1:01:23That being said, you could also roll a.
- 1:01:27You could roll a complication that doesn't matter, True.
- 1:01:31Yeah, there's the the one where it's like it just is kind of
- 1:01:34finicky narratively speaking. Yeah.
- 1:01:37Or it could be the one that it's insufficient.
- 1:01:40The where incurs an additional .5 system strain cost.
- 1:01:43If you're not really cyber it up, you might not care that much
- 1:01:46about that and you're like, that's fine.
- 1:01:47It still works. You know, if you succeed, the
- 1:01:52cyberwear is is implanted successfully.
- 1:01:55Whether successful or not, the subject needs a certain amount
- 1:01:57of time of recovery before they can return, can return to the
- 1:02:00action basically, yeah, you have, you have a, you had
- 1:02:07surgery done, you have recovery time.
- 1:02:14If you want to get the cyberwear removed, it's another simple
- 1:02:18check. So removing cyberwear can't
- 1:02:20fail. You can always remove it.
- 1:02:23The only thing that the check is to determine if if the cyberware
- 1:02:29is removed and is totally functional or the cyber doc
- 1:02:34fucked it up and so it's the cyberware gets beat up.
- 1:02:37Essentially it gets it gets fucked up in the removal
- 1:02:40process. Yeah, that's it.
- 1:02:49You can also remove cyberwear from dead bodies.
- 1:02:52Yes, so I wanted to bring this up.
- 1:02:54You can, but you only have it really.
- 1:02:57You have an hour after the person dies to do it
- 1:03:01effectively, and then you've got up to 24 hours to do it, risking
- 1:03:05it for a biscuit. And then after that the
- 1:03:06cyberwear is ruined, presumably because of that totally shot.
- 1:03:11There are probably teams of people, their whole job is just
- 1:03:15to like, scout out for gunfights, run onto the scene,
- 1:03:19yank the cyber, and then just leave.
- 1:03:22Yeah. I want that to be like, if
- 1:03:25you're playing a game, that's what I want to play it with.
- 1:03:28Like a a fucking cyber collector like that just sounds so much
- 1:03:30fun. Scoop shit up.
- 1:03:33Yeah. If the cyberdock fails to remove
- 1:03:38it successfully, it's now counted as second hand
- 1:03:41cyberwear, which we'll get to in a second.
- 1:03:45Then you have cyberware maintenance.
- 1:03:50Basically, however much your cyberware costs, you have to you
- 1:03:53have to spend 5% of the cyberware's cost every month.
- 1:03:59If you don't spend that every month, you will start to add
- 1:04:03complications to the cyberware. That's it.
- 1:04:07If you really, really ignore it, very extended lack of
- 1:04:14maintenance can provoke chronic illness or death.
- 1:04:16Some ultra high end bespoke wear may absolutely require timely
- 1:04:19maintenance. Blah blah blah.
- 1:04:20That's that's mostly flavor. Basically, if you really ignore
- 1:04:25it, it can be very unpleasant. Yeah.
- 1:04:32And then in terms of pay, pay your maintenance.
- 1:04:39Otherwise your shit breaks. Yeah, you're they literally say
- 1:04:43if you want those cyber legs kicking, you better pay your
- 1:04:46maintenance fees. Yeah.
- 1:04:50Then we have concealing the cyberwear or like how
- 1:04:56concealable your cyberwear is. So basically there's 3 levels.
- 1:05:03You have medical grade cyberwear which is concealed from surface
- 1:05:07level inspection and you can't see it without some kind of
- 1:05:12scanner or medical examination. So you know under skin like
- 1:05:18dermal implant type type shit. Then there's touch rated cyber,
- 1:05:22which is stuff that is not obvious when you look at the
- 1:05:26person, but if you touch the limb or the skin or whatever,
- 1:05:29you can feel it. So if somebody had like arm
- 1:05:32blades, I'm pretty sure arm blades are touch.
- 1:05:36You can't see by looking at their arm.
- 1:05:38But if you feel their forearm, you can feel the like plate of
- 1:05:40metal that opens up or whatever. And then there's sight rated
- 1:05:45cyberwear, which is like a fully mechanical arm.
- 1:05:48Obviously that's a mechanical arm.
- 1:05:53And then it does actually also mention cyber that produces
- 1:05:56obvious bodily changes is obvious while being used.
- 1:06:00So a body blades implant implant might be hidden under most
- 1:06:04circumstances, but slicing open some corpo VPVIP with it is
- 1:06:09going to make it very obvious very quickly.
- 1:06:12Which you know, makes sense. You can't see your body blades
- 1:06:14until you bust them out. I so I'm assuming you also
- 1:06:18visualize them as the mantis blades from Cyberpunk, right?
- 1:06:21I did, yes. Yeah, I also visualize them as.
- 1:06:27Is it? Is it Atom Smasher who just has
- 1:06:30like the straight flat blade maybe?
- 1:06:34Saw him what? Am I thinking of I have an image
- 1:06:37in my head of somebody with like an arm blade, but it's it's it
- 1:06:40just pops out straight and that there's no tip on it.
- 1:06:43The tip is like flat looks like a big like butcher knife or.
- 1:06:47Something it might be, yeah, I think Smasher has that.
- 1:06:50I don't know. Yeah, something like that.
- 1:06:53But yes, I did definitely picture the it's the mantis
- 1:06:58blades for sure. A part of me also thought of
- 1:07:00what the what? What's his nuts?
- 1:07:02What's that fucking dork's name in Baki?
- 1:07:04His body's covered in blades. One of the death row villages.
- 1:07:08The One Voice by Ichigo. Yeah, the one by Voice by Johnny
- 1:07:11Abash. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:12Yes, yes. No, it's not.
- 1:07:14Dorian. It's not Dorian.
- 1:07:17It's Oh no are also start with a.
- 1:07:20Doyle. Is it Doyle?
- 1:07:22I think it's Doyle. Yeah.
- 1:07:23Hold on, hold on. Hold on.
- 1:07:25Doyle Baki. Yes, Yeah, it's Hector Doyle.
- 1:07:29It's Hector Doyle. Yeah.
- 1:07:33Yeah, that loser. I his weird redemption arc and
- 1:07:39then his unredemption arc. Yeah, the character who survived
- 1:07:46the electric chair for literally no reason, just cause.
- 1:07:49Yeah, just because he could. He's just built different.
- 1:07:51Yeah, he just. Yeah, that's that's just the
- 1:07:55excuse for everyone in Baki. How do they do anything?
- 1:07:57I don't know. They're just built different.
- 1:07:59Well, yeah, I guess fucking Dorian's like, Oh yeah, he's, he
- 1:08:01was hanged for like 10 minutes or something.
- 1:08:04And he's like, yeah, I just flexed my neck and stopped my
- 1:08:08neck from breaking. Yeah, no biggie.
- 1:08:13Fucking Baki, dude. Fucking Baki's so fucking
- 1:08:16stupid. I can't.
- 1:08:21But it's not the right kind of. That's really my thing with
- 1:08:23Baki. It's not the right kind of
- 1:08:24stupid because like, Ken Ganache is stupid too, but Ken Ganache
- 1:08:28is hype as fuck. It really is.
- 1:08:30You know what's funny? This is, this is a tangent to
- 1:08:31our tangent. Gennaro was like, is there a
- 1:08:34single episode where you guys can just stay on topic?
- 1:08:38Sorry I fucked up. Anyway, the answer is no.
- 1:08:41We try. It doesn't work.
- 1:08:44Yeah, no, cannot, won't, not, won't stop.
- 1:08:48Well, you're we're both exhausted today and you're
- 1:08:51getting us that low energy mode and we still tangent.
- 1:08:55Why would I? Why would I want to stay on
- 1:08:56topic? You know, I agree.
- 1:08:58I think the tangents are half the fun, frankly.
- 1:09:02You don't want to hear a little bit about our Baki takes my deep
- 1:09:09hatred of Baki. My deep love to bother Josh
- 1:09:12about Baki. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:16Anyway, All right, now I got to find where I was in my notes
- 1:09:22hold. On my bad.
- 1:09:25Yeah, OK, You can attempt to. What the fuck you?
- 1:09:30What did I write here? You can attempt to reasonable
- 1:09:32the cyber what reinstall I think was supposed to be with the word
- 1:09:38there was I think. I think so.
- 1:09:45Yeah, but also I where did I even?
- 1:09:52Oh, OK, right. So if you have an implant
- 1:09:54complication, you can try to reinstall the original cyberwear
- 1:10:00to like dodge the implant, but it's costly and time consuming.
- 1:10:06Basically you have to pay for it again and you get a cumulative
- 1:10:11-1 penalty every time you keep trying.
- 1:10:15So like, you know, if you keep, if you keep trying to reinstall
- 1:10:22it over and over again, the minus, the penalty's going to
- 1:10:24get so bad that it's just like now you just got to live with it
- 1:10:27now, chief. Yeah, I just, Can you imagine
- 1:10:29you're trying to get like a sand Devastan installed and you keep
- 1:10:33waking up from the the anaesthesia and the docs like
- 1:10:38yeah man, sorry I didn't take again.
- 1:10:39You're like, Oh my God, no, yeah.
- 1:10:42It's like, dude, if you have anywhere in the season, your
- 1:10:43sister are going to die. You're like.
- 1:10:45I don't care, but yeah. Yeah, he's going out again and
- 1:10:50he's gone. There he goes.
- 1:10:53And then lastly in this little in the in the section where it,
- 1:10:59this technically isn't even the full cyberware section.
- 1:11:01This is like all the stuff you need to know before you look at
- 1:11:03the cyberware. Lastly, you have skill plugs.
- 1:11:11These are basically like a special kind of implant that
- 1:11:13lets you have points in skills that you otherwise wouldn't
- 1:11:16have. So like, oh, I don't have the
- 1:11:19heal scale, the heal skill, but I'm going to install a skill
- 1:11:23plug that gives me the heal skill plus, you know, plus one
- 1:11:26to my heal skill. You have to have a skill plug
- 1:11:33Jack, which is obviously its own type of cyberwear.
- 1:11:37And then you purchase the plugs themselves.
- 1:11:39Level 0 and level 1 plugs are reasonably affordable.
- 1:11:43Level 2 plugs are costly as fuck.
- 1:11:47Level 3 plugs are like nigh unobtainable unless you're an
- 1:11:51atom smasher type character who's like the biggest badass
- 1:11:54around with a lot of connections.
- 1:12:00And for for context, a level 0 mental skill or a conventional
- 1:12:04language mastery would cost you 1000.
- 1:12:07Level 1 is 10,000, level 2 is 5000.
- 1:12:12So they get expensive. And then if it's a physical
- 1:12:15based skill plug. So like if you wanted to
- 1:12:17increase your punch skill, take the mental cost and times it by
- 1:12:21two. So you can get skill plugs to
- 1:12:25cover your inadequacies, but they are not cheap.
- 1:12:31The other thing is that each each skill plug you install
- 1:12:39increases your your critical failure threshold by one for the
- 1:12:44skill that you are rolling with. So like if you have a skill plug
- 1:12:49for heel and then you roll your heel skill, your critical
- 1:12:52failure threshold would be two and one instead of just A1
- 1:12:58because it's not actually your skill that you're using.
- 1:13:02So the idea is that you could potentially fuck up harder
- 1:13:04because you did not take the time to actually practice the
- 1:13:06skill yourself. Oh see, I missed that too.
- 1:13:09That's interesting. Kind of like that.
- 1:13:11Yeah, whenever. Yeah.
- 1:13:13So with an excellent substitute. Well, an excellent substitute
- 1:13:16for years of practice. Skill plugs have their flaws.
- 1:13:19The programmatic expertise embedded of them, some some
- 1:13:23embedded in them, sometimes conflicts with the user's
- 1:13:27natural instincts or an already extant muscle memory.
- 1:13:30Whenever the user rolls a natural 2 on a skill plug
- 1:13:33augmented skill check or a natural one on an augmented
- 1:13:36attack roll, the checker roll is an automatic failure with null
- 1:13:40re roll, which no re rollability can save.
- 1:13:43The skill plug Jack itself then locks up uselessly for the
- 1:13:47scene, so you fail and you lose access to it.
- 1:13:51Well, it is possible to implant multiple plug jacks and using
- 1:13:55and use multiple skill plugs at once.
- 1:13:57The increase neural crosstalk invariably increases the chance
- 1:14:01of severe error. Each additional skill plug run
- 1:14:04after the first increases the automatical failure roll range
- 1:14:08by one point, so you can't go too crazy with him.
- 1:14:15I mean, you can, but there's a downside.
- 1:14:17Like everything in Cyberpunk, there's going to be a downside
- 1:14:19to your, you know, whatever weird thing you're doing.
- 1:14:21Non zero chance, freeze up and then get domed.
- 1:14:25Yeah, side note, I think that pair this paragraph is actually
- 1:14:31a really good example to point out what Isaiah was talking.
- 1:14:36I was always talking about where he's like, these books are kind
- 1:14:39of hard to read because there's a lot of fluff stuff around the
- 1:14:42mechanics, right? This paragraph I just read well.
- 1:14:47An excellent substitute for years of practice.
- 1:14:49Skill plugs have their flaws. The program, the programmatic
- 1:14:52expertise embedded in them, sometimes conflicts with the
- 1:14:55user's natural instincts are already extant.
- 1:14:57Muscle memory. None of that is needed.
- 1:15:00That's all fluff. Yeah.
- 1:15:02Like there's no rules in that statement.
- 1:15:03Then it says whenever the user rolls a natural 2 on a skill
- 1:15:07plug, augmented skill check, or a one on an attack roll, the
- 1:15:11checker rolls an automatic failure, which no re roll can
- 1:15:14save, no re rollability can save.
- 1:15:16So like the first half of that paragraph has no mechanics and
- 1:15:18the second-half of the paragraph is the mechanics.
- 1:15:20So here's something that they do in this book that I like, but
- 1:15:23they don't do it enough for it to be satisfying is there's a
- 1:15:26couple sections I don't 100% remember where, but they will
- 1:15:29either embolden or italicize the rules bit of the rules and I
- 1:15:35wish they. Usually for proper.
- 1:15:37Usually for proper noun type shit.
- 1:15:39Like for the part where it says skill plug wires, that's like
- 1:15:42italicized and bolded. Yeah, perfect here for
- 1:15:44secondhand cyber. It gives you all of this fluff,
- 1:15:47and then in italics it says APC can find one feasible candidate
- 1:15:50after a week scouting on the scene.
- 1:15:52Cool. Yeah, yes, sometimes it does it,
- 1:15:57but not all the time. I need it to be all the time.
- 1:16:01I know you do. So now we get on to the
- 1:16:06cyberwear systems, which is like how they actually function.
- 1:16:13So it starts being like, all right, where the fuck do you buy
- 1:16:16this shit? Basically PC operators, which
- 1:16:21are, you know, your characters operators are generally going to
- 1:16:25buy your cyberwear from some sort of back alley shop
- 1:16:27situation and secondhand a lot until you get, you know, cooler.
- 1:16:34I, I did make a note of this. This Kevin Crawford is a man who
- 1:16:40really loves his vocab because he'd be teaching me words I've
- 1:16:44never heard of. Did you know what a demimonde is
- 1:16:48or a demimonde? No, what the fuck that word
- 1:16:52meant? Yeah, so I had to look that one
- 1:16:54up. A a demimonde.
- 1:16:57For those curious, it's spelled DEMIMONDE in 19th century
- 1:17:04France, the class of women considered considered to be of
- 1:17:08doubtful morality and social standing.
- 1:17:11Did he really hit me with the year old English for the whores?
- 1:17:14Yes, yes, he's because, he says St. denizens, operators and
- 1:17:20other demimonde get their Chrome implanted in seedy back alley
- 1:17:24chop shops, dirty living rooms and gang run clinics.
- 1:17:27That's a little wild. I ain't even gonna lie.
- 1:17:30Yes, he. Busted out.
- 1:17:32He busted out the ye old fridge for the horse.
- 1:17:37I thought that was really I was like, yo bro, you got to relax.
- 1:17:43That's like cost her longer and you're like.
- 1:17:45Yes. The fuck is a Custer mugger?
- 1:17:47Yeah, yeah. So basically it's just
- 1:17:52describing the types of scenarios that you, your PCs,
- 1:17:54can reasonably expect to be acquiring Shit.
- 1:17:58So how do you actually get your second hand cyberware right?
- 1:18:02So in search of cheap Chrome, APC can find one feasible
- 1:18:06candidate after a week of scouting the streets then lost
- 1:18:17track. Hold on.
- 1:18:19Then you make a roll on a complication table to determine
- 1:18:23the built in issue with the cyberwear itself.
- 1:18:26An implant complication. So basically you're getting it
- 1:18:28second hand. So it's fucked up somehow if you
- 1:18:31have a contact who can help you. So like if your contact is, you
- 1:18:37know, I don't know, a cyber doc, maybe you can re roll the
- 1:18:42complication and then choose which one you want.
- 1:18:47If the operator really doesn't want the wear at that point,
- 1:18:50they have to go back on the hunt.
- 1:18:53The time required double s which eat with each successive
- 1:18:57attempt. But second hand cyberwear is
- 1:19:03half the price of new cyberwear. This discount does not apply to
- 1:19:09maintenance though. Do keep that in mind.
- 1:19:13But it's at yeah. So it's at half price.
- 1:19:14Basically. You can go around looking for
- 1:19:15half price shit, but it's going to come with a built in
- 1:19:18complication, which at, you know, level one or two or
- 1:19:23whatever is a, you know, a reasonable bargain because the
- 1:19:27cheapest cyberwear is like $10,000.
- 1:19:32So you know, did you notice there was also the?
- 1:19:37Did you see the full body? Conversion.
- 1:19:39I did, yeah. That's $6 million, yes.
- 1:19:43Yes, the full board conversion, yeah.
- 1:19:46I I didn't read what it did though.
- 1:19:49I you were here, you went OK, so actually here.
- 1:19:53OK, yeah. So after explains how to get
- 1:19:56secondhand cyberwear, then we get into the tables of the
- 1:20:00cyberwear itself. And as I put my notes, bold, all
- 1:20:04capitals, so many tables of stuff.
- 1:20:10As Isaiah noted, there's body, head, skim, limb, century,
- 1:20:13medical and nerve cyberwear. So there's a lot.
- 1:20:17The full body conversion. Let's let's read the full body
- 1:20:19conversion. It's kind of long, but it's
- 1:20:21funny. The user's brain and central
- 1:20:25nervous system are transplanted into cutting edge into a cutting
- 1:20:30edge synthetic shell at a cost and difficulty as it is as if
- 1:20:35this cyber took 4 system system strength, which is a lot because
- 1:20:42the table for the does the table even go up to 4 for the
- 1:20:46installations? It says 3.1 or more.
- 1:20:50So yeah. Once converted, the subject has
- 1:20:57an effective constitution of 20 for system strain purpose, but
- 1:21:02cannot be healed by conventional first aid or medical drugs,
- 1:21:06requiring 10 minutes of repair work with a tool kit to repair
- 1:21:09any amount of damage and $250 worth of parts for each hit
- 1:21:13point to be restored. A full conversion Borg no longer
- 1:21:18requires food, water, air, or sleep, but each day without the
- 1:21:22ladder adds one system strain due to the mental stress.
- 1:21:25So you don't need to sleep, but your mind will snap if you don't
- 1:21:28sleep eventually. Yeah.
- 1:21:31The conversion requires 12 hours of maintenance every two weeks,
- 1:21:35and missing it will result in the user's death in 2D6 days
- 1:21:39unless the omitted maintenance is performed.
- 1:21:42Current full body conversion tech is unstable after 1D four
- 1:21:46years. The subject has a cumulative 5%
- 1:21:49chance of death each year. Borgs do not take major injuries
- 1:21:54and gain a + 6 bonus to their trauma target that stacks with
- 1:21:57existing bonuses. Yeah.
- 1:22:03So like ultimately, maybe not even really that worth it, but
- 1:22:09it's cool. Yeah, that seems like a, you
- 1:22:11know, this is a suicide mission. Might as well.
- 1:22:15Yeah, well, I, I, I think this also exists more for the GM to
- 1:22:18stick it on an MPC than anything else.
- 1:22:21Yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, here's the thing.
- 1:22:23You're literally that's, that's, you know, I would say more than
- 1:22:25Atom Smasher. That's the Major Kusanagi.
- 1:22:29Yeah, that too. It's kind of, yeah.
- 1:22:33As I did mention before with the weapons, all of the cyberware
- 1:22:36has the effect of it on the right, on the far right side of
- 1:22:41the table in a brief little short description.
- 1:22:45So for example, if you get dermal armor, it says adds plus
- 1:22:51one to the user's trauma target. If you get emergency
- 1:22:54stabilization factor, it automatically, it says
- 1:22:57automatically stabilize, hold out cavity to encumbrance of a
- 1:23:03hidden body space. So you get these brief little
- 1:23:05descriptors and then you Scroll down and read more closely.
- 1:23:09Couple other fun ones. There's a dead man circuit which
- 1:23:11just like fries any data that's in your brain when you go down.
- 1:23:17The Banshee module which lets you mimic voices and stun
- 1:23:20enemies. You get a Canary the.
- 1:23:23Titan Yeah, the Titan gun system which lets you mount a heavy
- 1:23:27weapon to your body 'cause these are all these are all bodies
- 1:23:30everywhere. I just like the name Titan gun.
- 1:23:37Oh, here you go. This is another reason usable
- 1:23:39only by a full body conversion Cyborg or subjects with a
- 1:23:43strength score of 18. This amount allows the
- 1:23:46installation of a man portable heavy weapon such on those such
- 1:23:49as those on page 57. The user counts as a stable
- 1:23:53firing rest, and the weapon has two integral magazines of ammo,
- 1:23:58though it can be loaded by hand as well.
- 1:24:00The specific weapon mounted can be swapped during maintenance.
- 1:24:04That so that's really funny. I know this.
- 1:24:07Probably this is more likely the reference to Atom Smasher having
- 1:24:09the mini gun on his shoulder. On his shoulder.
- 1:24:11Yeah but the thing that it reminds me more of is at the end
- 1:24:15or halfway through season 1 of Ghosts in the Shell.
- 1:24:19The Major gets her ass beat by one of the the the Appleseed
- 1:24:23looking Max with the forearms and she just steals Saito's anti
- 1:24:28material rifle and one arms it at point blank at the fucking
- 1:24:31mech just over and over again till she mag dumps it.
- 1:24:35And the dude on the inside's like screaming for help because
- 1:24:39like the bullets aren't get actually getting through to him
- 1:24:41because of the armor but the concussive damage he keeps
- 1:24:44taking is like killing him. Good time.
- 1:24:51Yes, I'm going to say it's probably not so much a reference
- 1:24:54to that one, but it could also be flavoured that way.
- 1:24:57Oh, look, I mean, like I said, it's almost certainly the Adam's
- 1:24:59Fasher thing. It just in my head, I just
- 1:25:01imagine, you know, the major one arming a Barrett 50 caliber
- 1:25:05point blank. Just like Roberta.
- 1:25:08Just like Roberta. Yeah, under head cyberwear.
- 1:25:14One that I really like is the I mod that turns your eyeballs
- 1:25:18into a flash. A round launcher.
- 1:25:24A holdout weapon designed for surprise short range attacks.
- 1:25:27The this eye has been loaded with small explosive flichettes.
- 1:25:31It has the stats of a light pistol in a range of 10 meters
- 1:25:34and requires a main action to reload its single round
- 1:25:36magazine. If used against a target in
- 1:25:40melee range who does not suspect it exists.
- 1:25:42Its existence a normal hit. A normal hit roll is made on a
- 1:25:46miss. It does full normal damage
- 1:25:48anyway. On a hit, the damage doubled so.
- 1:25:53Do you know what a you should? Grab some what?
- 1:25:54A Yeah, just grab some surprise, motherfucker.
- 1:25:58Surprise razor blades on the face.
- 1:26:02For Skin Armor, Skin Cyberwear, we have Dermal Armor 1-2 and
- 1:26:05three obviously Poseidon implants to breathe underwater.
- 1:26:10Skyborne shielding, which I think is like a set of implants
- 1:26:16and skin treatments meant for those who spend extended periods
- 1:26:19and vacuums. Oh, it's for breathing.
- 1:26:20Yeah, nice shark skin electrodes which give you shocky hands.
- 1:26:29The let's see what other Obviously we have our limb
- 1:26:35cyberwear, body blade, cyber limbs, metal hands, limb gun,
- 1:26:40muscle fiber replacement, shock fist, you know the classics.
- 1:26:45And then you have sensory cyberwear, ear modifiers, eye
- 1:26:49modifiers, fucking gun link, head communicator.
- 1:26:55There's also a Medusa mod under the head ones that let you have
- 1:26:58literally like tensile Medusa hairs, medical cyberwear, which
- 1:27:03is basically just to replace. It's like prosthetics.
- 1:27:07They're not like, they're not like weaponized everywhere.
- 1:27:10Nerve, cyberware, enhanced augments, coordination reflexes,
- 1:27:14reaction booster, skill plug Jack, zombie wires.
- 1:27:19Zombie wires is a fun one. Basically your body, you, you go
- 1:27:22down and then your cyberware takes your brain over like a
- 1:27:26zombie and just keeps doing whatever action you told it to
- 1:27:28do. I thought that was pretty fun.
- 1:27:35And then of course, you can modify your cyberware, such as
- 1:27:39adding a monoblade to your weapon or a quick, quick
- 1:27:42detachable system, or make it firewalled so it's harder to
- 1:27:47hack the cyberware because that is the thing you can do in this
- 1:27:49game. You can hack someone's cyberware
- 1:27:51on their body, which is like, you know, fucking rude it.
- 1:27:57Is one of my favorite thing. So like that is something I do
- 1:28:00like doing. Even though I don't usually play
- 1:28:01the deckers or the net runners, I do love hacking someone's
- 1:28:03cyberware. There's the just commit an alive
- 1:28:06hack in 2077 and that was really funny and like really gruesome
- 1:28:11as you can hear the person be like, no, no, no.
- 1:28:14The gun slowly goes up. You're like, I feel a little bad
- 1:28:17about this. Yeah.
- 1:28:21And then after all the cyberwear stuff, the book briefly
- 1:28:24mentioned cyber decks and modifying your cyber decks.
- 1:28:28I'm going to skip over this because let's talk about cyber
- 1:28:30decks in a bit. But you can modify your cyber
- 1:28:33deck. That's the main thing.
- 1:28:35You can you can over clock it and fucking add to the memory
- 1:28:39and make a make a better case chassis for it and all that
- 1:28:42Yibidi yabahoo. And then the you know, obviously
- 1:28:45this is also where you would buy the the decks themselves.
- 1:28:49Then you have drones. Drones are like drones to me are
- 1:28:55one of the other main key elements to cyber to like
- 1:28:59cyberpunk as a genre. I don't know about you.
- 1:29:00I feel like drones are really important.
- 1:29:03I, you know, I that's not where my brain goes.
- 1:29:04Usually it is like a facet of it, but it's not something that
- 1:29:07like particularly I'm like, ah, yes, drones.
- 1:29:09I don't know, I always think about the drones.
- 1:29:11I don't really know why but the drones feel rather key to me.
- 1:29:18They work pretty much the same as stars without number.
- 1:29:21Drones do have a trauma target though, so you can like you can
- 1:29:25Dome the drone basically to control like you know, there's
- 1:29:32they there, there's drone stats, they have AC, trauma target, HP,
- 1:29:37fittings, movement, hard points. Basically fittings and hard
- 1:29:41points are how many like weapons or or extra doodads you could
- 1:29:45stick on them. When you control your drone, you
- 1:29:49use your skills, bonuses, and action, and you use the same
- 1:29:54skill Bonus is an action economy you do for your character to
- 1:29:57pilot the drone, plus any bonuses you might get from
- 1:30:01things like mods and fittings on the drone.
- 1:30:04So for example, if you want your drone to make an attack roll,
- 1:30:08you roll with your to hit bonus plus your program or drive
- 1:30:12skill, plus your int or decks and make the attack roll just as
- 1:30:15you would if you were shooting a gun.
- 1:30:18If a drone is destroyed, if a drone hits 0 HP, that's it, it's
- 1:30:23destroyed. Repairing a drone, you need a
- 1:30:25tool kit and a fixed 0 skill, and it costs 25% of the drones
- 1:30:29total cost. Boom bang boom.
- 1:30:34There's not a ton to say about obviously, I'm making it sound
- 1:30:37like drones are really boring. There is a lot of really cool
- 1:30:39mods you can add on them. I'm not going to go through all
- 1:30:42the mods, but there is a ton of drone fittings and guns and shit
- 1:30:45you can add to your drone. So you can absolutely play the
- 1:30:48cyber, the Shadowrun Rigger character and then it gives you
- 1:30:55a couple of like common drone actions that you can do.
- 1:30:59But basically you can basically if you're controlling a drone,
- 1:31:02you're going to use the drone the same as you would if your
- 1:31:05character was using a gun. Like the drone is your gun is
- 1:31:08the idea. It's just.
- 1:31:09A. Omnidirectional, Yes,
- 1:31:13omnidirectional gun. And then there's the vehicles
- 1:31:17page we already talked about like using a vehicle after the
- 1:31:21drones as the actual vehicles page.
- 1:31:25Nothing to add here. They follow the same structure
- 1:31:27as they do in stars without number with again, with the
- 1:31:30exception of the added trauma target number.
- 1:31:33And then there are some sample vehicle, like sample NPC
- 1:31:37vehicles in here that you can use as the GM basically.
- 1:31:44But yeah, vehicles, they have the statute expect speed, armor,
- 1:31:48trauma, ACHP, crew power, mass, size, hard points.
- 1:31:55Crew is like how many can they hold?
- 1:31:57Power is what power do they have to power like extra fittings.
- 1:32:01Mass is how big are the fittings you can put on there, Size is
- 1:32:04the size of the vehicle itself. And then hard points is how many
- 1:32:06spots can you stick guns on this thing.
- 1:32:11There are also a list of vehicle fittings and vehicle bods and so
- 1:32:16on and so forth. Like everything else in the
- 1:32:18game, you can stick all sorts of fun doodads on it.
- 1:32:21Are you sensing a theme here? There's a lot of doodads.
- 1:32:26A lot. A lot of doodads.
- 1:32:28Like a whole. Lot of doodads that's that's
- 1:32:30without numbers game then we get to the Creme de la Creme, the
- 1:32:35thing that everybody always wants to know when they pick up
- 1:32:38any game that is Cyberpunk in any way how does the.
- 1:32:42Hacking work. I actually I've been kind of
- 1:32:45quiet this episode. I actually unironically love the
- 1:32:48way the hacking works in this game.
- 1:32:50It is best way I can describe it elegant.
- 1:32:55It's pretty good is what I will say.
- 1:33:00Like I, I won't say it's simple, but it is elegant.
- 1:33:04If there was a way to do it. And I really, we've talked about
- 1:33:08this before, hacking or any sort of subsystem in a game this
- 1:33:12complex easily just turns into you're just playing a different
- 1:33:16game now. Yes, I think this game does
- 1:33:19mostly avoid that problem. Yes, that's what I was just
- 1:33:21about to say. It somehow manages to avoid it
- 1:33:23for the most part and it's because of how effective and I
- 1:33:29mean I guess I will say simple because the the hacking is
- 1:33:31relatively speaking is simple yet quite evocative it.
- 1:33:34Pretty much follows the same flow.
- 1:33:37It follows basically the same flow as the main combat
- 1:33:40mechanics of the game. Because, you know, ultimately
- 1:33:42hacking does in cyberhunk games end up being a form of combat.
- 1:33:49So, and like I said, I would say it is, it's like 8090% of the
- 1:33:57way there for me. There's still little elements of
- 1:34:01it that feel a little confusing in a way that I'm like, maybe
- 1:34:04they don't need to, but I also don't necessarily.
- 1:34:08This is the problem. This is my problem.
- 1:34:09Anytime I find hacking in a game right I look at it and I go.
- 1:34:14This feels a little more complicated than it needs to be,
- 1:34:16but I also don't have a better idea.
- 1:34:20Right. Right.
- 1:34:21Like, I don't, I don't, I don't know exactly what I would do to
- 1:34:25make it better, but it's not, it's, it's still feels just a
- 1:34:29little shy, like something's just slightly off, but I can't
- 1:34:33quite put my finger on. Well, I think it it just sort of
- 1:34:36runs into the issue that even this as good as it is, it's
- 1:34:41really difficult to hit that. It's very difficult.
- 1:34:45That feel that you get watching something like you were watching
- 1:34:48Lucy or Kiwi and edge runners that like you can do anything if
- 1:34:53you're if you hack a good enough, if you can crack the
- 1:34:55mainframe, cool enough. You can do a lot in this game
- 1:34:58though. You can do a lot.
- 1:34:59No, no, that's that's what I'm saying.
- 1:35:00Like that's why I agree with you where it hits the like 80% mark
- 1:35:03because what you can do is quite extensive, but I don't think
- 1:35:06there's going to be any way other than like a weave magical
- 1:35:10bullshit button to get the exact vibe you're looking for.
- 1:35:14Yeah, I don't know. I I feel like I don't know
- 1:35:17somebody smarter than me I think could figure it out, but.
- 1:35:20I think a lot of people tried. I don't.
- 1:35:21I don't think they can figure. Out a lot of people have tried
- 1:35:23that's true. So what, what, what's the vibe?
- 1:35:27Because this is important, right?
- 1:35:28What's the vibe of the hacking in this game?
- 1:35:30Because every cyberpunk game, I feel like handles the vibe a
- 1:35:34little differently. So this game is, goes for your
- 1:35:36pretty standard 80s style cyberpunk where basically
- 1:35:45everything is, is hardwired and there is no World Wide Web,
- 1:35:50right? So you, it's not a, it's not
- 1:35:53like shadow run where you have the net, the shadow net or
- 1:35:56whatever the fuck it's called that runs across like the whole
- 1:35:58city or the whole world or, or big chunks of the world where
- 1:36:01I'm forgetting my, my Shadowrun ruler a little bit at this
- 1:36:04point. Characters use a crown or a
- 1:36:12cranial Jack to Jack into virtual reality via a little
- 1:36:16wire. The look of virtual reality
- 1:36:18takes on whatever vibe the user wants.
- 1:36:22So if you have a guy who's really into like samurai movies
- 1:36:26or whatever, his entire virtual space is going to look like
- 1:36:29Japanese temples and you know, Buddhist monks and samurai and
- 1:36:33all that shit because everything is to everything is kind of
- 1:36:39assumed to be hard wired or you have to physically be near it or
- 1:36:44relatively close or whatever. Cyberpunk Red actually does this
- 1:36:49too. Slightly different but similar
- 1:36:51idea. This means that things like data
- 1:36:54chips where you have to physically take the take the,
- 1:36:57the zip drive based, you know, and move the zip drive
- 1:37:00physically from one area to another.
- 1:37:04Data chips, security systems that are connected to nothing
- 1:37:08except the building that they're in.
- 1:37:10And like anonymous wire transfers of money are all on
- 1:37:13the table because the idea is that the data is being moved
- 1:37:17physically with like a hard drive or a zip drive or
- 1:37:19something like that. Money transfers can be anonymous
- 1:37:23because there's no World Wide Web for them to go through, or
- 1:37:26they can be largely anonymous depending on how you do it.
- 1:37:31And if you get into the security system of a building, you might
- 1:37:35not get into the entire building.
- 1:37:37The security system might only be hard wired to that floor.
- 1:37:42So it's all that it's very, it's that very tactile style of
- 1:37:46there's no Wi-Fi. In fact, the book even calls out
- 1:37:50that like Wi-Fi thermometers would never don't exist because
- 1:37:53they're a massive security risk or Wi-Fi thermostats.
- 1:37:58I meant to say, so the games like the, the thermostat is not
- 1:38:05wireless in the corpo building because then the hacker could
- 1:38:08shut down the entire building. So nobody would ever install
- 1:38:11that because they would be executed.
- 1:38:17This also means that because everything is this sort of
- 1:38:20enclosed bubble type of security and and and wiring and
- 1:38:25everything, the hacker character cannot be the guy in the chair
- 1:38:31where they jump on the net from miles away and just wirely start
- 1:38:35busting into buildings or shit. The hacker character has to
- 1:38:38physically be in the mission. You can't.
- 1:38:43You can't do that thing where you're like super far away and
- 1:38:46never put yourself in danger. You have to get in there and get
- 1:38:49your hands dirty. It even specifically says that
- 1:38:53hacker operators are generally in much better physical shape
- 1:38:57than like corpo hackers because they have to physically fight at
- 1:39:02locations and shit and get their hands dirty.
- 1:39:04I love the yes I'm a nerd but I also have a six pack.
- 1:39:07Yes, I'm fucking jacked. They well, it's like Lucy and
- 1:39:14Cyberpunk could fight really well too, right?
- 1:39:16Like, yeah, true. I literally did the guy in the
- 1:39:21chair thing the little bit of time that I played cyber
- 1:39:25Shadowrun because my character was a technomancer, which means
- 1:39:29that you interface with the the the shadow net thingy with your
- 1:39:33brain. You don't actually have a cyber
- 1:39:35deck. You're like a data mage.
- 1:39:37It's fucking sick. That is an interesting idea on
- 1:39:39how you would get that to work in like an elegant way.
- 1:39:42Like how to be the guy in the chair and have it not feel
- 1:39:44boring? Like I'm sure.
- 1:39:45Shadowrun does it, but I don't. Is it effective?
- 1:39:49I don't know. No, because your character just
- 1:39:53gets insulated from any and all. Danger is basically what
- 1:39:55happens. Yeah.
- 1:39:58And you couldn't. You can't do the like they're
- 1:40:00tracking my location every two minutes or else you just kind of
- 1:40:03seem like a shitty hacker. Yep, Yep.
- 1:40:08So what? So that's kind of the the
- 1:40:12general tone. So no, what it was cyberspace,
- 1:40:17like how do nodes work? What is the access and stuff.
- 1:40:20So the typography basically virtual, like I said, virtual
- 1:40:24spaces take on the idiom chosen by the network's owner.
- 1:40:27So if you have, if you go into a building and the owner of the
- 1:40:31network is really into D&D, he might design the visuals of his
- 1:40:34company network to be Wizards and warriors running around
- 1:40:38fighting Dragons and shit. The actual space quote UN quote
- 1:40:44the space that is the network operates via nodes and nodes are
- 1:40:50physical objects or groups of objects that exist in the real
- 1:40:54world and then mirror in the node.
- 1:40:56Nodes are then linked by connections.
- 1:40:59So for example a camera has a connection to a main security
- 1:41:03terminal. So like the camera would be the
- 1:41:06node, and then the connection line would be How you get from
- 1:41:10the camera to the security terminal would be jumping
- 1:41:13through that, jumping from one node to the other node.
- 1:41:17And then people in cyberspace move around via avatars, which
- 1:41:21of course means your avatar can look like whatever you want.
- 1:41:23Which of course means you're going to meet a lot of
- 1:41:25anthropomorphic dog and cat people in cyberspace, I'm sure.
- 1:41:29Look IT furries, man, They do be a thing, yeah.
- 1:41:33IT furries. This game does not do the thing
- 1:41:36where cyberspace is faster than meat space, which I'm kind of
- 1:41:41happy about because that's always a pain in the ass to
- 1:41:43track. What like you know the the the
- 1:41:47hacker gets to do things for like 2 hours and then actually
- 1:41:49no time has shifted? Yeah, so like for example, in I
- 1:41:53think in Cyberpunk Red, you can do three cyber actions during
- 1:41:57the time of one physical meat action.
- 1:42:01Meat action. I think they literally called a
- 1:42:03meat action I'm. Sure they do.
- 1:42:06So in cities without number, cyberspace actions are not
- 1:42:10faster than physical actions. So the hacker character has to
- 1:42:13choose to split their actions between physical and cyber.
- 1:42:18So you can't do some hacking and then shoot somebody.
- 1:42:22You got to pick one or the other for your turn.
- 1:42:25Which again, I'm kind of OK with because the tracking the faster
- 1:42:32element is almost always a pain in the ass in terms of actually
- 1:42:38connecting to a network or to cyberspace.
- 1:42:42There are some, the game says, like there are some virtual
- 1:42:45locations that you can get to anywhere in the city that are
- 1:42:48like public hangout spaces, but they don't hold any relevant
- 1:42:52data. Obviously to get to the good
- 1:42:54stuff, you need to physically connect to a device.
- 1:42:58So if you're trying to get to the data storage of a building,
- 1:43:01you have to physically go to the building and connect to a node
- 1:43:05and move to find the data storage.
- 1:43:08You can wirelessly connect to things.
- 1:43:13If you are within 30 meters of a device and you have line of
- 1:43:16sight, you can try to like hack into a thing from 30 meters
- 1:43:21away. So for example you can move up
- 1:43:23on like the security camera, move within 30 feet of it and
- 1:43:27then hack into it. You're at a -. 2 for all your
- 1:43:29actions because wireless is not as reliable and you cannot go to
- 1:43:34other connected nodes if you attach wirelessly.
- 1:43:41Also, you are always aware of your physical surroundings while
- 1:43:44you're jacked in, so you're not like you're not like, you know,
- 1:43:48a comatose idiot while you're jacked into something.
- 1:43:53You did allow for that kind of narrative though, with the one
- 1:43:56of the the combat stems it's called.
- 1:43:59Yes. Oh God, what the hell is it
- 1:44:03called? The very end of the list window.
- 1:44:10There we go. That that's the one where you
- 1:44:13just zone out completely. Yeah, it makes you look a super
- 1:44:15good hacker, but like, you know, you, you're conked.
- 1:44:18Yeah, pretty much. Then we have access so your your
- 1:44:29access score is like. I was a little confused how this
- 1:44:34what this was at first. Access is basically like an ammo
- 1:44:37counter in a way. It's like how many actions you
- 1:44:43can pull off before you're sort of out of ammo, quote UN quote.
- 1:44:47That's basically what Access is. And the narrative, the like,
- 1:44:52fictional description is that if you're in a network for too
- 1:44:58long, no matter how good you are, eventually the network's
- 1:45:01just going to come down on you and kick you out no matter what.
- 1:45:06Then we get to programs, and programs are really the main
- 1:45:10meat and potatoes to hacking this game.
- 1:45:14You can basically think of programs like the hacker's spell
- 1:45:17list. Like a wizard has their spells,
- 1:45:19the hacker has their programs. The way it works is programs
- 1:45:25have two versions. They have verbs and subjects.
- 1:45:30You combine a verb with a subject to design your program
- 1:45:35and what it will target. So for example if you take the
- 1:45:39verb glitch and add the subject drone, that will allow you to
- 1:45:44run the glitch program on a drone to shut down the drone for
- 1:45:49a period of time. Once you have your program
- 1:45:53figured out, you make an in program check against the
- 1:45:56security DC of the network. That's basically your spell
- 1:46:00check to see if it succeeds or not.
- 1:46:04So I'm, I'm underselling it a little bit, but basically the
- 1:46:11idea is you mix and match these verb subject things, combine
- 1:46:15them together to be like, all right, bypass door glitch drone,
- 1:46:21you know, fucking analyze avatar, blind avatar, decrypt,
- 1:46:28decrypt data file. Like you smack the 2 words
- 1:46:31together to get your your your program action.
- 1:46:35That's kind of why I love it though, right?
- 1:46:36Because again, it's, it's simple, but it's really
- 1:46:39evocative. It lets you do almost exactly
- 1:46:43what you want to do at any given time.
- 1:46:45Yes, there are some limitations. So like the game will tell you
- 1:46:51what kind of targets you can hit.
- 1:46:53So like append for example, the verb append can only target data
- 1:46:58type targets. So you can't append door because
- 1:47:03a door is a device not data. And also like most of them are
- 1:47:11logical. So you can activate a device or
- 1:47:14you can activate cyber, but you can't activate data, right?
- 1:47:19Which is fairly logical. So most of them will make sense.
- 1:47:23Like OK, append is for data. Yeah what the fuck would a
- 1:47:26append door doesn't mean anything anyway, so I'm not
- 1:47:29going to try that anyway. But there are technically
- 1:47:31restrictions. I love the idea.
- 1:47:33So if you think about append, right, to append is to add
- 1:47:36something on. So I.
- 1:47:38Had a door, a bend door and a door just pops up.
- 1:47:41You're just breaking reality. I have appended you just do
- 1:47:45that. No son just goes out.
- 1:47:54Then there's a there's a brief page on like hacking mechanics
- 1:47:57which is basically 2 pages that summarize the main things you do
- 1:48:02while you are in cyberspace, which is a very good reference
- 1:48:06sheet. I'm glad they added it because
- 1:48:08I'm sure people are going to use it a lot.
- 1:48:13In terms of the programs themselves, you can only run
- 1:48:19programs while you are in cyberspace with the exception of
- 1:48:25cyber drone and transmission programs, which is to basically
- 1:48:31say you can hack a drone, you can hack somebody's cyberware
- 1:48:35and you can transmit data. Well, not in cyberspace.
- 1:48:39So again, very logical. Which ones you can and can't do
- 1:48:42outside of cyberspace? It would be really goofy if you
- 1:48:45had to be in cyberspace space to send an e-mail.
- 1:48:48To transfer data. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:48:49Yeah, yeah. I need to send an e-mail.
- 1:48:51Guys, hold on. I gotta check in.
- 1:48:52Yeah, just are we gonna just like your Decker is just
- 1:48:56unconscious on the floor. It's like apparently he's filing
- 1:48:59his he's. Filing, yeah.
- 1:49:05Then all the programs, like I said, have an access cost.
- 1:49:09Actually, I misspoke a little bit before I said access is like
- 1:49:13ammo. It's more like effort.
- 1:49:15Do you remember how effort worked for psychics in Stars
- 1:49:20Without Number, where you commit effort for a certain period of
- 1:49:23time? That's kind of how access works
- 1:49:25because you commit a point of access and then for some of the
- 1:49:34programs that point of access you've committed is permanent
- 1:49:38and for some of them it goes away as soon as you stop running
- 1:49:41that program. So it's, it's basically like the
- 1:49:45effort mechanic. When you run a program, you have
- 1:49:49to do a skill check against the security whatever, whatever the
- 1:49:56security DC is, which will vary depending on the network that
- 1:49:59you're hacking into. If something is, you know, a
- 1:50:03super, if it's Renroku headquarters, it's going to be a
- 1:50:06little harder to hack into. Skill check will be a little
- 1:50:10higher. Skill DC will be a little
- 1:50:11higher. I should say, if you fail,
- 1:50:15you've wasted the action and the access point.
- 1:50:17You know your your spell fails. Programs will always take up one
- 1:50:27point of CPU, which is what the access thing is while they're
- 1:50:31running. And like I said, sometimes it'll
- 1:50:32turn off. A hacker can write up their So
- 1:50:40when you acquire programs, you can buy them.
- 1:50:44Basically, you're buying, you know, a, a data protocol
- 1:50:48essentially, or like a, a data chip with information on it.
- 1:50:54You can buy them, but they can be a little expensive if you
- 1:50:57don't want to buy them. A hacker with skill, I think you
- 1:51:02have to have skill zero in. No, you have to let's see, you
- 1:51:08have to have program one to make your own programs.
- 1:51:20Program one skill to make your own programs and you can
- 1:51:24maintain a certain number of programs that you have created
- 1:51:28on your own based on your program skill level and and
- 1:51:34there is a the hacker edge will also give you extra programs you
- 1:51:37can make yourself similar to basically programs when you make
- 1:51:41them. It's similar to when an engineer
- 1:51:43mods things you have to maintain.
- 1:51:46You can only maintain so many same idea you can and this I
- 1:51:52liked a lot. You can also specialize your
- 1:51:55programs to specific targets. So the example it gives is like
- 1:52:02a specialized subject is more focus.
- 1:52:04So instead of saying the cyber subject it might say nerve
- 1:52:09cyber, cyber subject. And then if you target
- 1:52:12somebody's nerve based cyberware with that program, you get a +
- 1:52:161. And then there's unique subjects
- 1:52:20that you can do. So instead of being nerve cyber
- 1:52:23subject, it might be enhanced reflexes one subject.
- 1:52:27Or instead of flying drone target, it might be the Zhao Wen
- 1:52:31Phoenix subject. So you're getting even more
- 1:52:34specific and that you can add a + 2 to.
- 1:52:36So basically if you go in and get some extra deets, extra like
- 1:52:42dirt on your mission, you can make specialized programs for
- 1:52:46that specific mission, which I think is especially cool because
- 1:52:50then it rewards you for, you know, scouting the area out.
- 1:52:55Yeah, I mean, I, I, I love any system that gives you rewards
- 1:52:59for thinking ahead, right? Like I now don't get me wrong, I
- 1:53:03really like this. So, you know, and this is kind
- 1:53:06of related the like Blades in the Dark flashback system where
- 1:53:09it's like, we don't have to do that work because we let you do
- 1:53:11it in the middle. But I do really appreciate when
- 1:53:16it's like, yeah, like Lancer does this right when you go.
- 1:53:18Mechanical rewards for doing the work.
- 1:53:20Yeah, yeah. Well, so that's that's one of
- 1:53:22the best parts about Lancers. What do they call them?
- 1:53:26Not resources. The reserves is you go, oh, you
- 1:53:30know, our next mission we're going to be going through a
- 1:53:34corpo building to steal our MEX back.
- 1:53:35OK, you'll go. OK, cool.
- 1:53:37I'm going to go buy a couple of reserves that are that will help
- 1:53:39me for hacking. Now you're thinking ahead and
- 1:53:42now that will directly help you. Or if you're like, well, we used
- 1:53:45a bunch of ammo in the last fight.
- 1:53:46I'm going to get extra ammo, more core bonus, stuff like
- 1:53:48that. Right, right.
- 1:53:51Always a fan. Yeah, go for some good planning.
- 1:53:54This is literally me. I'm this character.
- 1:53:56I'm the you know what? We're going into a dungeon.
- 1:53:58I'm just going to start bringing bombs.
- 1:54:02I mean, yes, but I think the other thing that's important too
- 1:54:05about a mechanic like that is not only is it it like it's
- 1:54:09rewarding you for planning ahead, but it's also giving you
- 1:54:12concrete. Like the game itself is giving
- 1:54:16players concrete benefits and reasons to do it.
- 1:54:18As opposed to like D&D, where if the players go out of their way
- 1:54:22and make a bunch of plans ahead of time, you as the GM have to
- 1:54:25kind of figure out how that's gonna help them, right?
- 1:54:28Like there's not always an obvious mechanical benefit.
- 1:54:33Whereas in this scenario, it's like, OK, we know that the guy
- 1:54:36flying the drone, the defense drones, is using Zhao Wen
- 1:54:39Phoenix drone. So if you can make a couple of
- 1:54:42programs for those drones, that'll help a lot.
- 1:54:44You know what I mean? Obviously you can't, you can't
- 1:54:52specialize verbs, you can't specialize verb programs because
- 1:54:57it's an action, right? So you can't specialize in
- 1:55:00action any further really. Then it gives you the list of
- 1:55:07cyberspace actions. So just like when you're
- 1:55:10fighting in combat where you have a couple of specific
- 1:55:12actions, you have cyberspace actions alert the network, Jack
- 1:55:16in, Jack out, move nodes, crash, shut down.
- 1:55:21Which is basically the admin just shuts everything down, copy
- 1:55:25file, delete file, issue command, run a program,
- 1:55:28terminate a program. They all basically do what they
- 1:55:31sound like. They either cost you a main
- 1:55:33action or a move action. They work just like using
- 1:55:38actions in combat. Again, similar to the vehicles
- 1:55:41and the drones, this game does not use any weird special
- 1:55:46functionality for what you're doing when you're hacking.
- 1:55:51You are still at the end of the day operating within the core
- 1:55:56turn based combat system. It's all flowing back into that
- 1:55:59main system. There is also a full page to
- 1:56:04give you an example of hacking of how it actually works, in
- 1:56:07case you're confused. I I didn't even bother reading
- 1:56:13the example because I once I would got through the hacking
- 1:56:16section, I was like, Oh yeah, OK, I get this you.
- 1:56:17Know, no, it's not I mean it's it's I don't have much to add
- 1:56:20because I I'm you know, but no, yeah, it's again, it's
- 1:56:24evocative. It doesn't necessarily need the
- 1:56:27big, you know, page long expiration.
- 1:56:30If you're thinking about it actively, you're going to go,
- 1:56:32oh, and I could do it like this. Oh, but then if they do this,
- 1:56:34oh, I can counter with this. It just it flows.
- 1:56:37You're good. Read it if you need it, but I
- 1:56:40don't think you will. I think most people will find.
- 1:56:44Then now you might say, all right, well, so I'm doing this
- 1:56:46hacking thing and I get if I'm going up against the network, I
- 1:56:50might need to, you know, open doors, delete files and stuff
- 1:56:55like that. What's gonna what's gonna resist
- 1:56:59me as the hacker? That's where you have demons and
- 1:57:01watchdogs. Demons are just automated
- 1:57:06programs in a network. They what do they I think they
- 1:57:10call them in Shadowrun. They're called ice, right?
- 1:57:16Or in. No, so in Cyberpunk they're
- 1:57:18still. They're also called demons.
- 1:57:21In Cyberpunk they're called demons.
- 1:57:22I think they're called ICE in Shadowrun, I'm pretty sure.
- 1:57:25No, Ice is also is. That's also a cyberpunk name.
- 1:57:30Ice and black ice are right. ICE.
- 1:57:33Yeah. Counter intrusion,
- 1:57:34countermeasure. ICE are major constructs
- 1:57:36designed to detain and possibly kill deckers.
- 1:57:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:57:42OK, I'm not crazy. In Shadowrun, they're called
- 1:57:44ICE. Yeah, in Cyberpunk they're also
- 1:57:46called ICE. It stands for Intrusive
- 1:57:48Intrusion Countermeasure Electronics.
- 1:57:50I just said you said Shadowrun, not cyberpunk.
- 1:57:54I know but I'm saying they're also never mind.
- 1:58:01But is wait, there's a distinction between demons and
- 1:58:04ice in cyberpunk? Yes, Yeah.
- 1:58:08So a demon is a. Well, no, no, it's a demons are
- 1:58:15arguably subsections of ice. You get like black ice is where
- 1:58:19usually you get demons. The difference being is that
- 1:58:22like a a demon is not just a a computer virus.
- 1:58:27It's sort of like a sentient AI computer virus, or not sentient,
- 1:58:31but it's like an aggressive AI that's trying to, well, you.
- 1:58:35Can't use. You can't use demon in Shadowrun
- 1:58:40to refer to hacking things because they're actual physical
- 1:58:45demons in Shadowrun, so that would get confusing.
- 1:58:50Anyway. So demons are basically they're,
- 1:58:53yeah, they're automated programs that go into the network.
- 1:58:56They can take on whatever form. You got different types of
- 1:58:59demons, Tripwire, Mastiff, Siren, Catafract, Ogre, Headman,
- 1:59:05Headsman, Hydra, and Nemesis. Basically they run down a list
- 1:59:11of command lines in a specific order and they are limited on
- 1:59:16how many program lines they can run.
- 1:59:21The game describes it as like they're just not smart enough to
- 1:59:24keep running program after program.
- 1:59:28They have an HP pool and a skill bonus like any other NPC that
- 1:59:33you might fight does once you hit them.
- 1:59:36The main like attack program is stun avatar.
- 1:59:42Once you stun avatar a demon, you frag them.
- 1:59:45Once they're fragged, they're gone.
- 1:59:47They'll regenerate in like an hour.
- 1:59:51It's pretty straightforward the the player runs into them, the
- 1:59:54demon executes whatever command lines they have.
- 1:59:59So for example. It gives you a list of common
- 2:00:02demon programming. So if the player runs into a
- 2:00:05bouncer type demon or a or a a demon that's programmed to act
- 2:00:11as a bouncer I should say it says run the stun avatar against
- 2:00:16any intruders until they have been knocked unconscious or
- 2:00:18offline. Perform the alert network action
- 2:00:21when intruder has been repelled if it isn't already alerted.
- 2:00:27That's it. You just follow and then it
- 2:00:29gives you common command lines. So it's like run Terminate
- 2:00:34program against XY or Z, run, paralyze Avatar against this,
- 2:00:38run lock barrier, run, whatever, whatever.
- 2:00:42They're like, they're really automated NPCS.
- 2:00:46I, I mean, I think it's worth bringing up like the different
- 2:00:48classifications of Demon because I think they're really fun.
- 2:00:50You have bouncer, patroller and Gatekeeper, Shield Bearer,
- 2:00:54Repairman, trapper and execution.
- 2:00:58Yeah, those are like the types of programming that they have.
- 2:01:01That's not the demon itself. That's the type of programming
- 2:01:03the demon can have. Cause the demon itself are the
- 2:01:06tripwire, the mast of the siren and so on and so forth.
- 2:01:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. But either way, yeah, basically
- 2:01:13as AGM, it's really easy. You just go, what kind of demon
- 2:01:15is it? It's this one.
- 2:01:16OK, He does this real simple. And then you have watchdogs,
- 2:01:21which are just counter hackers. They're just NPC hackers.
- 2:01:25They follow the exact same rules in cyberspace as the PC do does,
- 2:01:29with the obvious exception that the security of the network is
- 2:01:34on their team, right? So if you're hacking into the
- 2:01:37enemy building and then you run into a watchdog, obviously the
- 2:01:42barriers are going to let the watchdog through and not let you
- 2:01:45through. I could see.
- 2:01:48A really fun subsection of play for this game where you play as
- 2:01:52like a hacker squad like everyone hacks.
- 2:01:59That could be a really fun like sort of mini campaign.
- 2:02:05And then lastly in the hacking stuff is network servers and
- 2:02:11architecture. So like, how do you as the GM
- 2:02:13actually set this up? It's pretty easy, actually, a
- 2:02:17lot easier than some other games.
- 2:02:20You have a basic sketch of the area, right?
- 2:02:23So like a floor plan, like all right, they're in this company
- 2:02:26building. And then you circle any devices
- 2:02:29that could, any devices that could be hacked slash any
- 2:02:33devices that act as a node. So, you know, cameras,
- 2:02:39mechanical doors, like, I don't know, fucking shield wall or
- 2:02:44something. Anything that you think could
- 2:02:46reasonably be a node. Once you determine the nodes,
- 2:02:50you pick what type of server this building is running or this
- 2:02:55floor is running potentially if there's multiple servers in the
- 2:02:58building. So like if it's a beta server,
- 2:03:03it can have 15 node nodes Max and two barriers Max and then
- 2:03:09three demons Max. Once you've determined, OK, I
- 2:03:18know what kind of server it is the server has for in terms of
- 2:03:24programs that the server could potentially run, it's pretty
- 2:03:27much unlimited. Once you've chosen the server,
- 2:03:33you draw the connections between the nodes and make sure that the
- 2:03:36count you know how many you have based on the nodes is good.
- 2:03:42You go cool, draw connections between them, then you place and
- 2:03:48determine your barriers, your demons, and your data files
- 2:03:52again based on how many the server could potentially have.
- 2:03:57And then you set ADC like a general DC for the security
- 2:04:02based on, you know, how difficult you think this
- 2:04:05particular network should be. Just because you set ADC doesn't
- 2:04:10mean it can't adjust from node to node either.
- 2:04:13So like set an appropriate base security difficulty for the
- 2:04:17network using the table on page 94.
- 2:04:20Individual networks or nodes might vary from their from this
- 2:04:25based on their importance or the skill of their maintainers.
- 2:04:28So like, you know, the node, the, the, the server for the
- 2:04:35first floor is like DC-8 or whatever, but the server for the
- 2:04:39next floor down in the basement is like DC-10 because that's
- 2:04:42where they keep the more important data.
- 2:04:45So it's not like, it's not like 1 building has to have the same
- 2:04:48DC all the way through or whatever.
- 2:04:51And that's it, that, that's hacking.
- 2:04:54You know, I, I, I summarize certain, I summarize some stuff,
- 2:04:58like once you read what all the different programs and stuff do
- 2:05:00that'll take you some time or whatever, but like, yeah, that's
- 2:05:03hacking. Like it's not, it's, it's, it's
- 2:05:06a meaty chunk of the book. Like, relative to the other
- 2:05:08mechanics in the game, it is a a reasonably meaty chunk, but it's
- 2:05:14not deeply esoteric or weirdly confusing.
- 2:05:18It's pretty. It's pretty intuitive, elegant.
- 2:05:25And yeah. And reading through it
- 2:05:31definitely made me want to play a, a hacker in this game.
- 2:05:34So if I if I read your hacking rules and I'm like, yes, I would
- 2:05:38like to use that, you're doing good.
- 2:05:40True. And that's where we're going to
- 2:05:47stop for today. We will get to the GM half of
- 2:05:52things next week because there are actually a decent amount of
- 2:06:00notable changes on the GM side of things.
- 2:06:05Little different tact that he took with this game, which I
- 2:06:07kind of understand because the sandbox of a cyberpunk game is
- 2:06:12the city as opposed to like a world map or a space sector.
- 2:06:16So you, you know, you come at it a little bit differently.
- 2:06:19Honestly, you know, I hadn't actually thought about that and
- 2:06:21I, I hadn't looked at the GM section because I assumed it
- 2:06:23would have been essentially the same.
- 2:06:24But I I will actually do that now.
- 2:06:27I would say, I mean a lot of it's, you know, the there's a
- 2:06:30lot of advice and stuff and like how to make NPCS and stuff
- 2:06:34that's all in a similar realm, but there are elements that are
- 2:06:37different, like how to handle NPCS is a little bit different.
- 2:06:43Missions. It gives you a whole how to
- 2:06:44build missions because obviously missions are the core that, you
- 2:06:47know, the core structure of cyberpunk genre as opposed to
- 2:06:55just like an adventure or just like a, a planet for you to land
- 2:06:59on. You may also notice no faction
- 2:07:04turn. I did not notice that, but now
- 2:07:07that she mentioned it, yeah. A faction turn.
- 2:07:10So we'll get to that. Also Cities without number.
- 2:07:17I think I know the answer, but I mean, like you.
- 2:07:20You would play this, Yeah. Oh, absolutely, yeah, I can't.
- 2:07:24I couldn't tell you if I'd rather do this first or
- 2:07:27Cyberpunk Red, but this is definitely the fact that I don't
- 2:07:31know which one I'd want to play first.
- 2:07:33It tells you something. True, yeah, I'm probably would
- 2:07:39lean towards cities without number, but that's also kind of
- 2:07:41because I'm like more familiar with it too, right?
- 2:07:47Yeah Anyway, yeah. To taz been us tis tis have been
- 2:07:55us. Something something.
- 2:07:59Follow us or don't on the social medias be free, live your life.
- 2:08:06I'm not your mom. Yeah, sorry for the low energy
- 2:08:09this week y'all. Like I said, we are particularly
- 2:08:11fucking exhausted. I don't feel like I was that low
- 2:08:13energy. I was low energy.
- 2:08:15I'm tired of shit. Yeah, well, my throat is still
- 2:08:20tired, so that tells me I wasn't, I couldn't have been
- 2:08:22that low energy. No, I mean like usually we're
- 2:08:24like laughing like idiots and tangenting every 10 minutes.
- 2:08:26We were actually, you know, I think that's really this topic
- 2:08:29that I think. That's, I mean we tangented
- 2:08:31quite a bit. Not that bad, not not in
- 2:08:34comparison to the fucking Kane episode.
- 2:08:36We were all over the place on that.
- 2:08:37Well, that was there may have been another reason for that.
- 2:08:40Fair look, I think, I think when we are when we are low energy,
- 2:08:44we're very on topic. I think is the the take away I
- 2:08:50guess. It's not a bad thing, sure.
- 2:08:58I have no fall. I have no fall.
- 2:09:06Eat your vegetables I. Don't want to?
