- 0:27What you need to know about family food finance and fitness.
- 0:30I am your host,
- 0:31Mindy mccauley Extension Specialist for instructional support with family and Consumer Sciences Extension.
- 0:37We are housed in the Martin Gatton College of Agriculture,
- 0:40Food and Environment.
- 0:42My guest today is Kelly May Senior Extension Associate for family finance and resource management.
- 0:48Welcome,
- 0:48Kelly.
- 0:49I'm Mindy.
- 0:49It's great to be here and we're going to talk about that.
- 0:53Dreaded s word that kids have to think about when this time of the year rolls around,
- 1:00but school is getting ready to start,
- 1:01isn't it?
- 1:02Oh,
- 1:02it's dreaded.
- 1:03It's exciting.
- 1:04It's all those things.
- 1:05It is all those things.
- 1:06That's right.
- 1:07And probably going back to school is one of the big expenses that families have to deal with as they look at their annual budgets.
- 1:18So let's talk about that to school,
- 1:20um,
- 1:20shopping and how we can maybe make it not quite so painful on our pocketbooks.
- 1:26Great.
- 1:26I think,
- 1:27um,
- 1:27having a plan of attack certainly is a good idea to get you started.
- 1:32It's always good to plan before you shop and that's if you're buying large things or small things.
- 1:37So even the,
- 1:38the small school supplies,
- 1:40it's good to have a plan.
- 1:41You might want to check the supplies you have at home.
- 1:45So,
- 1:45inventory what you already have.
- 1:47So you might have things in your home office or in your kitchen or,
- 1:51um,
- 1:51things that were used last year that aren't all used up,
- 1:55that could still be used like calculators,
- 1:57rulers folders.
- 1:58Maybe a backpack.
- 1:59Depends on how hard on it they are.
- 2:01Right.
- 2:02Exactly.
- 2:03Uh,
- 2:03also another thing to think about is clothes like we,
- 2:06we tend to think got all those little things that the school puts on the list.
- 2:09But chances are they probably have some sort of dress code and they expect your Children to wear outfits every day.
- 2:15So,
- 2:16you might need to see if your kids have grown and if what they have still fits,
- 2:21um,
- 2:21still meets the dress code.
- 2:23If anything needs to be replaced,
- 2:25if your kids have outgrown clothes and they are gently used.
- 2:29You may be able to sell them to a consignment store for cash store credit.
- 2:33So that tickles me because my boys wore things hard.
- 2:37And so we never got to sell anything to a consignment store.
- 2:41But there are Children who aren't quite so hard on their clothing.
- 2:45So that,
- 2:45that is definitely a great option.
- 2:47Depends on the item.
- 2:48If it's a holiday dress or something,
- 2:51maybe it doesn't get quite as worn as,
- 2:54as the favorite pair of jeans.
- 2:56Exactly.
- 2:57If you budget is tight,
- 2:59contact your school's family resource or youth services center to see if there are local school supply drives planned in your community.
- 3:06Or you can buddy up with other families who have similar age kids and swap out some items so they'd be new to you and that could work for clothes or the,
- 3:15um,
- 3:15supply items.
- 3:16Oh,
- 3:16I love that idea because kids love new clothes,
- 3:20whether they really are brand new or not,
- 3:22don't they?
- 3:23They do.
- 3:25So when you make your shopping list,
- 3:27um,
- 3:27how do you decide what is most important?
- 3:30Oh,
- 3:30it's a good idea to prioritize.
- 3:32And this is also a good opportunity to talk to your kids about the difference between wants and needs.
- 3:37You knew I was going to slip that in there.
- 3:39Um,
- 3:39sometimes we can't have both.
- 3:42So sometimes we have to choose and so prioritizing can help and that can be a good discussion for,
- 3:47for you and your kids to have so that they know why this item is more important than that item and why we have to,
- 3:55um,
- 3:56make those choices.
- 3:57I laughed when you talked about once and needs because my granddaughter and I had this conversation just last week and she's three.
- 4:04So it might have been a little early for the conversation,
- 4:07but she got it because she said so if I need it,
- 4:10I ask mommy and daddy and if I want it,
- 4:12I ask you,
- 4:14that's,
- 4:14that's about right.
- 4:16Keep in mind your budget too,
- 4:18back to school expenses are probably not part of your regular monthly budget.
- 4:22You're probably not buying these things every month.
- 4:24So it,
- 4:25it's an occasional expense and you may need to fit it into your plan.
- 4:29So maybe you don't have to buy everything right away this month,
- 4:33winter coats and snow boots and things like that.
- 4:36Maybe you can put those off for a little bit and plan ahead to work those into a later month budget.
- 4:41So once you get to the store and you're ready to do your shopping,
- 4:45uh,
- 4:45what do you do?
- 4:46Are you good about following a budget or,
- 4:48or following your list or do you find that you go off script a little,
- 4:52everybody's a little different and you have to know yourself.
- 4:55And so I always say when I talk about budgeting,
- 4:57I say honesty is important and we have to be honest ourselves.
- 5:01So if we know that slick display is going to distract us,
- 5:05maybe we need to kind of put our blinders on,
- 5:08so to speak.
- 5:09It's a good tip to compare prices online before shopping especially if you're buying something expensive like a tablet or a laptop.
- 5:16Um,
- 5:16you know,
- 5:17your,
- 5:17your larger items for sure.
- 5:19Um,
- 5:19you can shop retailers who offer discounts or sales except coupons or have customer loyalty programs.
- 5:26Sometimes that can be a help and you can consider buying generic or store bearing products.
- 5:32I know the kids don't always like that tip.
- 5:35Um,
- 5:35but it can make a huge difference.
- 5:37A lot of time,
- 5:38the same quality product with a different logo on it can be a vastly different price.
- 5:44Also hang on to your receipts,
- 5:45especially for those large items just in case if they aren't needed,
- 5:49maybe they can be returned as long as you haven't used them.
- 5:53It's always a great idea because I don't know how many times I've wanted to return something and not had the receipt.
- 6:00Well,
- 6:00in earlier,
- 6:01you talked about wants and needs.
- 6:02And so here's a tip for that too where um maybe the parent is laser focused,
- 6:07but the child not so much if you know,
- 6:09you have a child who's going to want to help choose some items and maybe they aren't items on the list,
- 6:15uh set a designated amount and make it a little shopping lesson for them.
- 6:19So they get their little amount of money,
- 6:21they can pick a thing or two and they can learn some of this process as well.
- 6:26It's also fun for them and it's a great way to start the process of learning how to budget.
- 6:31Right.
- 6:32Do we have any other tips for our back to school shoppers before we wrap up,
- 6:35um,
- 6:35maybe buy in bulk.
- 6:37Uh,
- 6:37if it's something like,
- 6:38you know,
- 6:39you've got five kids and,
- 6:40you know,
- 6:40you're gonna need 100 pencils,
- 6:42maybe.
- 6:42Go ahead and buy the box and save a few for next year.
- 6:45Things that won't expire,
- 6:47paper,
- 6:47pencils,
- 6:48other goods.
- 6:48A lot of us buy tissues and things like that for the classroom.
- 6:52If your school has required reading and you need those books,
- 6:56they don't provide the books,
- 6:58you can check your local library.
- 6:59A lot of libraries have those books on hand in,
- 7:02in multiple quantities or talk with students from the grade.
- 7:06Uh Other parents might have already bought those books and they're already read,
- 7:10they no longer need them.
- 7:12So maybe you can kind of reduce reuse,
- 7:14recycle that way.
- 7:16Yeah,
- 7:16we don't have to save that tip for college,
- 7:17do we right there in,
- 7:19in high school,
- 7:20middle school or elementary school if necessary?
- 7:23And my last tip is to budget ahead.
- 7:26So,
- 7:26you know,
- 7:27there's going to be more expenses for school.
- 7:29It's not just the notebooks at the beginning.
- 7:31Uh,
- 7:31there's gonna be that fundraiser and that homecoming thing and the school project at the last minute and probably a graduation at some point.
- 7:40And you might want to budget ahead for all of these great things so that you're ready when the time comes.
- 7:44Uh Those are all great tips,
- 7:46Kelly.
- 7:46I do know that it is important to make sure that our Children have what they need and can function appropriately in school.
- 7:54So we want to set them up for success.
- 7:56Exactly.
- 7:56So that is why we're here,
- 7:59Kelly.
