- 0:01Well, good morning everybody, Happy weekend. Hopefully you enjoyed the fourth of
- 0:05July and you spent last weekend you know with all of your digits and no
- 0:09burns. That's the repcal Light Fourth of July wish for everybody out there.
- 0:13You're listening to the repco Light Home Improvement Show sponsored by Benjamin Moore and Man,
- 0:18let me tell you, I've got a big show this week. I've
- 0:20got a special surprise guest joining me at the end of the show to talk
- 0:24about a design concept called the Unexpected Red Theory. I'm also going to be
- 0:29joined by Kevin Herman from Benjamin Moore to talk about the Alfred Pennyworth of the
- 0:33paint World. Now Alfred for those of you who don't know, as Batman's
- 0:36butler. And while we always talk about superhero products like scuffax and sticks,
- 0:41this time I kind of want to talk about a product that's more like Alfred.
- 0:44It's a little bit silly, but it's going to be fun. I'm
- 0:47also going to be joined by David pop from Rose Pest Solutions to talk about
- 0:51the spider problem Won't Won't Walm in the Hansen House. So a lot of
- 0:56things to cover it's a full show. But right now, let's start the
- 0:59show. Since we just came off a fourth of July. Let's talk about
- 1:02George Washington and how home improvement projects helped win the Revolutionary War and can help
- 1:07you win your own many revolutions at home. That is a ridiculous title,
- 1:12a long title, but the concept behind it is pretty solid. And here's
- 1:18the scoop. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington sent a number of letters
- 1:22back from the warfront to his home at Mount Vernon. And while these letters
- 1:26all conveyed the usual greetings and whatnot, many of them also contained instructions,
- 1:32detailed instructions for home projects that George was micromanaging from a distance. Now,
- 1:37to some extent, this whole thing has been a bit of a puzzle for
- 1:41some historians. I mean, here we have George up to his eyeballs in
- 1:44a war that threatened his life in the future of the nation, and what's
- 1:47he doing at night. He's writing letters about the color of the draperies,
- 1:52or the work that he wants done to the chimneys, or he's even sending
- 1:55some letters asking about how the painter's getting on. It is a little bit
- 1:59odd historians have wondered, you know, what's going on here? How could
- 2:02these ridiculous issues be filling his mind at this point in his life. While
- 2:06a group of UCLA psychologists believe they've hit upon the answer, and I definitely
- 2:10think they've got a big part of it, probably most of it. But
- 2:13I do think there's a second part that's at play too. And we're going
- 2:16to get to my idea in a minute, but first let's give the psychologists
- 2:21their due. Their argument is this, they think that George probably didn't understand
- 2:24that it was happening at the time. He didn't realize this was happening.
- 2:28But these small projects and decisions that he was making regarding home stuff, you
- 2:32know, at Mount Vernon, these were helping him focus and they were giving
- 2:36him the confidence for the bigger, more important decisions that he was going to
- 2:38be making on the battlefields later that day or the next. See. It
- 2:43turns out making small decisions, even insignificant ones, can really help shift our
- 2:47mindset from feeling like a passenger in life to feeling like a driver. It
- 2:52can instill us with a sense of control and accomplishment. Now, for Washington,
- 2:55when his brain was fatigued and overwhelmed by war troubles. His head is
- 3:00spinning, you know, and he's beaten into what had to be a mental
- 3:02state of exhaustion and you know, almost stagnation. When that's going on,
- 3:06these little decisions could have calmed him down and then helped them get moving again.
- 3:10Now that's one psychological explanation for why, you know, George was focused
- 3:15on these projects despite being involved in leading an army and a revolution. Now,
- 3:20I think there's another one, one that's just as important, but a
- 3:23lot easier to grasp. I think he was homesick. I think the home
- 3:25projects were a little window into regular life. You know, it was relief
- 3:30from the stress, and it helped him clearly visualize the future, you know,
- 3:34the future that he's fighting for. You know, basically, he's got
- 3:37his eyes on returning home, and when he does, he wants home to
- 3:39feel like home. I think it's that simple. And I also think that
- 3:44there's something in this that we can all take advantage of, you know,
- 3:46when life's chaotic and challenging. You know, once in a while, when
- 3:49that happens and life's challenging or chaotic, maybe what we need to do is
- 3:53take on some small manageable projects. Not doesn't need to be painting, but
- 3:58it sure could be painting. Not saying don't paint, I'm just saying you
- 4:01don't have to paint. It could be as simple as organizing a room.
- 4:04Maybe it's just reorganizing the silverware drawer. Maybe that's where you need to start.
- 4:10Maybe it's gardening. Maybe it's attacking the weeds that are growing in the
- 4:13cracks, you know, in the driveway. You know. Maybe it's painting
- 4:15a closet. Maybe it is painting. Who knows. Little tasks like these
- 4:19they can give us a mental break when we need it, and they can
- 4:21instill a sense of achievement. And even if that sense of achievement is tiny,
- 4:27that usually starts a domino effect of sorts. You know, our confidence
- 4:30starts to get a boost, and we feel energized to tackle something new,
- 4:33and things just kind of grow from there. Secondly, when the world's spinning,
- 4:38you know, when our world is spinning, our personal world is spinning.
- 4:42Working to create a space in our home, you know, a sanctuary
- 4:45of sorts that's just really good for us, you know, mentally, physically,
- 4:48and spiritually. It's just good stuff. It worked for the father of
- 4:51our country. It can work for us to So there you go. Paint
- 4:55saves the day again as always. All right, going to take a break.
- 5:00When we come back, I'm going to be talking with Rose Pest Solutions
- 5:02about an army that's invaded my own personal sanctuary and we're going to find out
- 5:08how I can get rid of them and restore peace to the land. All
- 5:12of that's coming up next. Stick around, let's solve one of my problems.
- 5:18You're listening to the Ripple Light home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore,
- 5:23and a couple of months ago, I noticed that there had been a leak
- 5:28in my roof, or at least something along those lines, because I saw
- 5:30some water stains running down a wall and I needed to figure out what was
- 5:34going on. So I got a flashlight out and I started looking at the
- 5:38ceiling and trying to explore what's going on, and I discovered tons, hundreds
- 5:43and hundreds of cobwebs that I don't normally notice when the lights are off.
- 5:47When the flashlight's not on the ceiling, you don't see these things when the
- 5:50flashlight's up there. It's like we're living in the Adams family. A set
- 5:54piece from the Adams family. Well, I've got a spider problem. I
- 5:58know it, and I'm about to get my answers. I'm joined by David
- 6:01Pop from Rose Pest Solutions, and we're going to talk about the spider problem.
- 6:05David, thanks for being here. Yeah you bet. Now you're the
- 6:08district manager for the Grand Rapids area location, right, Yes, so you
- 6:12guys cover all over the place, right yep, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio.
- 6:16All right, there's a rose Pest Solutions near you. So if you've
- 6:19got spider issues too, I don't want to be alone in this. So
- 6:24it's pretty pretty eye opening and depressing. So you've been working with bugs for
- 6:30at rose Pest for twenty some years, right, twenty seventh year and forty
- 6:33one years in the industry. All right, So dealing with bugs? Do
- 6:39you go to school especially to deal with bugs. We have a phenomenal training
- 6:44staff, We have phenomenal resources that we can use. There's no schooling.
- 6:49I've not had any schooling except for the schooling of hard knocks, all right.
- 6:54But we do have a phenomenal training where they are new people go to
- 6:58a school, all right, So a good deal. Help me with my
- 7:00problem? You've heard my story. Cobwebs everywhere. You can't understand. I
- 7:04can't overstate how many there were, and I do have to, you know,
- 7:09for my own peace of mind. When the lights are not shining on
- 7:14the ceiling, the room does not look like a filth pit. Well,
- 7:16when I've got my flashlight up there, it's terrifying. Now, cobwebs.
- 7:20I know they're what just abandoned spider webs. Right there are abandoned spider webs
- 7:26that will carry on dust and any other item that might be floating around in
- 7:32the air. And so yeah, it looks it almost gives you the sense
- 7:35that, oh, I need to clean this place. Yeah, that's right.
- 7:39There are abandoned spider webs that lost their elasticity, so they're not catching
- 7:44any other insects. But there were spiders there at one time. Yeah,
- 7:47all right, So they're they're pulling the they're collecting the dust out of the
- 7:51air. So it's kind of like kind of like air filtration system that I've
- 7:58installed in my back living room. So they're some positives to be had,
- 8:01But I know that that means I've got a ton of spiders, and I
- 8:05know that I've got a ton of spiders ever since we moved in. You
- 8:09know, we'd get the periodic spider in our other house, but this house,
- 8:13it's just full of them. I mean we've become one with them.
- 8:16After a while, you just accept it. What in the world do I
- 8:20need to do? I mean, I clearly I've got to get somebody out
- 8:24there to take a look at this, because I don't want to live like
- 8:26this anymore. And what does this all look like? What would you do
- 8:31in this situation? Well, first off, I think there is something that
- 8:33you can do, and that is anytime you can, for a lack of
- 8:39better statement, insect proof your home, utilizing cock making sure that all your
- 8:46screens are amend making sure that that windows close properly, doors close closed properly
- 8:54to help prevent other insects from entering. Now, you got to remember that
- 8:58the reason spiders are there is because there's other insects coming around. They're the
- 9:05reason they put up a web. There is the likelihood of insects coming there
- 9:09because they're going to feed on it. Now, I have other problems too,
- 9:11You could have other problems. Yes, it may not be you know,
- 9:16like, oh my goodness, I've got a carpenter and infestation. It
- 9:18could be something as simple as night flying insects such as moths, or it
- 9:24could be flies. They're coming around. So my house sounds like a real
- 9:28joy to be in, doesn't it. It's the place with all the flies
- 9:31buzzing around it. There's spiders insides. Don't worry. You don't notice so
- 9:35many flies inside the spiders. Get them all right. Well, one of
- 9:39the other things you can do, Dan is you can you can monitor it
- 9:43and we use we'll take down webs. We'll take down cob webs, take
- 9:46down existing webs using a webster, which is just a broom that has a
- 9:52long extension on it, and we'll take those down and that helps us monitors
- 9:56as well as make it not very inviting for spider to be around. That's
- 10:01a good part of what you can do. And then do you know,
- 10:05obviously doing a treatment to take care of the other insects. It will take
- 10:09care of the spiders. But spiders are a difficult pest because they don't groom
- 10:15themselves and because of the way their bodies are. Their bodies are lifted up
- 10:20off of a surface, so they don't pick up an insecticides you can actually
- 10:26put an insecticide on them, like some type of aerosol, and it's going
- 10:30to kill them, don't get me wrong there, but it's difficult for them
- 10:33to pick it up. So by getting rid of the other insects, you
- 10:35are getting rid of the spider population. Okay, so we got to get
- 10:39rid of the other bugs first. And another thing you can do is,
- 10:43like I was saying, as far as brooming off the webs and so forth,
- 10:46you can use there are products out there. One of them is called
- 10:50web Away, which is it puts a type of surface where they don't want
- 10:54to be able to place their web. So you can utilize something where do
- 10:58I get webby? You know, I don't know if you can purchase it
- 11:01or not, and then I get it from you? Well you can,
- 11:03you can serve. Okay, you'll come out and use web away yes week
- 11:07as one. Can I use my broom or do I need a webster?
- 11:11You can use what did you call them? It's called a webster, a
- 11:13webster, So my broom will function, your broom will function. The one
- 11:18thing about a webster is it's round, and so it's almost like a ball,
- 11:22So it's going to fit into some areas where your broom may not be.
- 11:24Okay, okay, well, I really like the fact that it's got
- 11:26a name and that it's the Webster. In fact, i'd prefer to have
- 11:31that used in my home anyway, and nothing but the best for my fly
- 11:35ridden castle anyway. So let's say I get you out there. I'm gonna
- 11:39you know, I've already gotten all the webs down that I could see.
- 11:43But the thing is, I've got a crawl space, and every time I
- 11:46have to go in there to get stuff, I just see, you know,
- 11:48carcasses as far as the eye can see. That's where a lot of
- 11:52the bugs are coming from. So I've anticipated this that I'm going to need
- 11:56to get somebody out there to do that. Let me understand what the process
- 12:01looks like. So you're gonna come out. You're gonna have to assess it
- 12:05because I really don't know what the problem is. So walk me through the
- 12:09whole thing. Well, we would do a thorough inspection. We're gonna not
- 12:11only look around all around on the outside to see if we can point out
- 12:15areas where you're having, As an example, spiders accumulate. Why are they
- 12:20accumulating there? What are some of the things that we can do to take
- 12:24care of it. What are some of the things that you can do to
- 12:26take care of some different type of lighting some areas where again by ceiling with
- 12:33cock we'll point out those areas. We'll actually do kind of stepping a little
- 12:37bit further here or ahead, but we'll do an outside treatment where we'll treat
- 12:43it all the way around the house, around the windows, the doors,
- 12:46the eaves, the sofets around them, down by the foundation and on the
- 12:50ground. Then but on the inside we're going to do a thorough inspection.
- 12:54If you have a crawl space such as what you have, we're going to
- 12:56get into the crawl space, take a look around with a nice flashlight and
- 13:00see what we see as far as A good point is to shut the flashlight
- 13:05off, and if we can see light coming through from any conduit or any
- 13:09plumbing or anything any separation, we'll look for that as well. And we're
- 13:13going to treat inside there. We're going to inspect all all the rooms on
- 13:16the inside, the kitchens, the bathroom, the bathrooms, the all the
- 13:20course, all the bedrooms, and if you have an attic we're going to
- 13:22go up into the attic. Arie and take a look. Okay, so
- 13:24you come in, you treat them. I've got like a million questions.
- 13:28I'm trying to get my brain around what to ask first the treatment? How
- 13:33long does that last? I mean, so I've got to figure out how
- 13:35they're getting in or what's causing that, and get things sealed up. Sure,
- 13:41because I would assume the treatment's going to kill what's there, absolutely,
- 13:43But if I haven't solved that other problem, well yes, it's just going
- 13:48to continue on. And so when we come in and we do a treatment,
- 13:52we come out three times per year, So anytime in between, if
- 13:56you start to have any kind of trouble, we'll come back out at no
- 13:58cost. But three times a year is what we need to do to be
- 14:01able to establish a good pest management program in your place. Okay, so
- 14:05I'll get things sealed up. I probably need somebody to help me expose what
- 14:09areas need to be sealed up, and we can with some of that light
- 14:13light ceiling for you. Okay, Okay, if they were really glaringly obvious,
- 14:18I probably would have found them already because I have been looking. So
- 14:20I need somebody to help me with that. You come out, You come
- 14:22out, multiple times. Three times you said, is what makes that work?
- 14:26Ideally? Help me understand. You know, how long does it take
- 14:31when you come out, you know, to do a treatment in the house.
- 14:35Well, it depends on what's all involved. Now you had mentioned you
- 14:39have cross space in an attic that's going to take longer than us just walking
- 14:41through a basement. Sure, so it can be anywhere from forty five minutes
- 14:46to upwards a couple hours. It all depends on what we're looking at.
- 14:50Okay, do I need to be gone? Do I need to be there?
- 14:52We'd like you to be there. There's unless we're doing something that per
- 14:56our label instructions on the material that we're us using that says that you need
- 15:01to be outside of the house, then you can be there. Okay,
- 15:03So what about like my crawl space. There's all kinds of things in there
- 15:07that I can't even begin to imagine. Are the chemicals that you're using gonna
- 15:11seep into some of these items? Is that going to be a concern?
- 15:13Do I need to seal everything up? You don't get it in little eartight
- 15:18bags like clothing and bedrooms and stuff like that. You don't have to worry
- 15:22about bedrooms or anything like that. We're going to place the material in areas
- 15:28where the insects are going to be. So that's going to be in the
- 15:31cracks and crevices inside of a crawl space, depending on I'm not sure what
- 15:35type of flooring you have. Is it dirt floor is No, They've got
- 15:39old gross carpet in there, okay, on top of soil, on top
- 15:43of concrete, on top of concrete. So it's got that going for it.
- 15:46Okay, what you would do in that, you it's always best anytime
- 15:52you're in a crawl space. Any items that you have in there, get
- 15:54your tubs, seal them up in the tubs. It's not going to be
- 15:58a concern as far as the material that we're going to use because we're not
- 16:00going to target those areas, so it's not going to seep in as you
- 16:04refer to early. Okay, last thing, what about dogs pets? You
- 16:07know, I've got a couple of dumb dogs. They'll eat anything, lick
- 16:11all kinds of stuff. They try to eat bumblebees. Well, how do
- 16:15I keep them away from all of this stuff? How dangerous is it?
- 16:18For? Well, one of the things that we do not do at rose
- 16:22Pes Solutions is we're not as far as rodents are concerned. We're not going
- 16:25to put in rodent bait well into in areas because of the fact that dogs
- 16:29will and can get into something like that. I don't care how good a
- 16:34bait station would be as far as preventing animals from getting in there. They
- 16:37can still get into it. So we're not going to do that. The
- 16:41other areas that we treat. Again, we're not going to be putting this
- 16:45in any of the pets in any kind of harms way. Now, for
- 16:49instance, if we're going to be treating for fleas as an example, we
- 16:52want the dogs to be out as well as people being out until the product
- 16:56is dry on carpeting areas and so forth. Oh man, please, let's
- 17:00not even think about that. I've got all I can handle just thinking about
- 17:04the spiders and all of those things I've got to deal with, all right,
- 17:07So I get you out there, you walk through like the day that
- 17:11you come out. Last question and you kind of give me. Do you
- 17:14give me an estimate over the phone, or do you come out look at
- 17:17everything first and then come back and schedule a time to come out and actually
- 17:21treat how's that part. Well, no, we can actually give you an
- 17:23estimate over the phone. There could be, for instance, if you're not
- 17:27that great at given us square footage and things of that nature, our pricing
- 17:30may adjust as you get out there, but we leave that to the technician
- 17:36when they go out there. But we can actually do all the transactions over
- 17:40the phone when you first call, and then schedule a date and get it
- 17:42done that date that we decide upon. All right, how busy are you
- 17:45guys? I mean when people call, how readily available are you? We
- 17:49usually can get there the next day. Okay, we can really really nice.
- 17:52Yeah, it all depends though again as we get into our busier season,
- 17:57we try to get out there quickly as possible. That could run into
- 18:02a weekend or whatever, but we try to get there as fast as we
- 18:03can. All right, sounds good. If our listeners have any questions,
- 18:07they want to get in touch. Maybe they've got cobwebs like the Adams family
- 18:11in their living room. Maybe they don't want those anymore either, David,
- 18:15how's the best way for them to get in touch? Well, you can
- 18:18give us a call at one eight hundred nine SIXIX Rose, which is seven
- 18:22six seventy three, or you can contact us through our website at rosepsolutions dot
- 18:26com. All right, we'll put all of that in the show notes.
- 18:27David Pop from Rose Pest Solutions, thanks for being here, you bet,
- 18:30thank you Dan. All Right, it's time for a break. But before
- 18:33we do that, I just got my spider questions answered, and now I've
- 18:37got a plan for dealing with the issue. What are you working on?
- 18:40You know, what questions do you have at your house? Email those questions
- 18:44to radio at repco Light dot com and if I use yours on the air,
- 18:48I'll send you a gift certificate for fifty bucks. All right, let's
- 18:51take a break, and when we come back, we're talking about superheroes and
- 18:55they're Butler's stay right there. Well, I got five kids, and you
- 19:03know I possess the size and the maturity level of a child myself. And
- 19:07one of my favorite things in the whole wide world is talking about superheroes.
- 19:12You're listening to the Repcolite Home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore, And yeah,
- 19:17superheroes. I have loved superheroes since I was a kid, and the
- 19:21idea of superheroes colors the way I look at life. You know, I
- 19:25talk about my own superpowers all the time, my superpowers of insight and my
- 19:30ability to read a situation. If you knew me at all, you would
- 19:34know that I'm completely oblivious in most situations. So most of the times I
- 19:38talk about my superpowers, it's sarcasm. But I still love the idea of
- 19:42having superpowers. I also love talking about paint products as superheroes in the paint
- 19:48world, and I've done that plenty of times. Now today on the show,
- 19:51I want to veer away from that just a little bit and talk about
- 19:53the Alfred of the paint world, you know, Batman's butler. And to
- 19:57help me do that, I'm by the butler of sales reps and an emphasis
- 20:04on the butt. I heard it. I heard it, Kevin Herman from
- 20:07Benjamin Moore. Kevin, thanks for being here, Thank you for having me.
- 20:11I can't let this go. Though you said you were the same size
- 20:12as a child, I am not brain power just size, same size.
- 20:18I'm the maturity level and size of a child with the brain power of an
- 20:22adult. So it's it's everything in the package, all right. Anyway,
- 20:26let's talk about superheroes. We don't have a ton of time on this segment,
- 20:29so I want to jump right in now. On the show, you've
- 20:32been a part of some of these conversations. Haley and I have talked on
- 20:34and on about products like scuff X and Advance and sticks, and we talk
- 20:40about these products because they seem to have superpowers. You know, scuff X
- 20:44resists scuffing. It's phenomenal, better than anything else we've ever seen. Right,
- 20:47it's like remarkable, right advance flows and easy to use. If you
- 20:52can't use that, we really shouldn't be painting. So you've got that sticks
- 20:56from in Select Benjamin Moore product. Yeah, sticks to every single thing out
- 21:00there. It's crazy superpowers. But then there's Regal Select. You know,
- 21:06Won't Won't Won't. It's a key Benjamin war product. It's a flagship product.
- 21:10It is the biggest seller and over years talked about it on the show.
- 21:14I wanted to look up with that. Is it because it's Alfred,
- 21:18it's it's Bruce Wayne's butler, or does it have its own superpowers? What's
- 21:22the scoop with Regal? You know, I think Alfred's probably the best way
- 21:26to go in comparison to make just simply for the dependability standpoint, and that
- 21:30he seems to when Robin or Batman in this case, is having some issues.
- 21:37Alfred kind of like the wise elder statesman that just comes through and holds
- 21:42everything together and gives them correct advice. And Regal is just like that.
- 21:45It works every time it's tried. It's a beautiful product. It's incredibly easy
- 21:49to apply. The durability is off the charts. It's just a phenomenal go
- 21:55to product that I sell most everywhere, very success. So are there things
- 22:00that Regal does better than other products? Or is it kind of just always
- 22:04there, you know, filling in the gaps. When I would say something,
- 22:07if you're looking for a very premium product but you don't want to spend
- 22:12the Aura dollars, Regal is a phenomenal product. A lot of the same
- 22:18properties. Doesn't go quite as far as per gallon. It's not scrubbable in
- 22:22any any color like auras, but that's the only product and where that does
- 22:26that period. Regal is just a very very durable product that works no matter
- 22:32who uses it. Incredibly easy to apply. Yeah, yeah, you're not
- 22:34running into issues. No professionals apply it, homeowners apply it, do it
- 22:38yourself. As it's very, very very good product. Now, Repcolite is
- 22:42running a sale. That's one of the reasons we wanted to talk about it.
- 22:45We're running a sale right now through the end of July thirty percent off
- 22:49the regular price of Regal, So you can get a gallon of Regal for
- 22:52about fifty eight bucks. That's the savings of basically almost twenty five dollars per
- 22:56gallon. And you're getting this high end, super high end product, one
- 23:00of the top products in your line, getting a very premium product for a
- 23:06little less than some of the premium products from the home centers that aren't quite
- 23:10as nice as right, mid level products right, and you're gonna see a
- 23:12difference. You're gonna feel a difference if you know you hate painting, if
- 23:17you feel like you're just not a good painter. One of the things I've
- 23:21really always believed is start by checking the products that you're using, because a
- 23:25lot of those will really help you. They'll cover a multitude of sins when
- 23:29it comes to your abilities. You'll find you're better than you think you are
- 23:32when you're using products that do what they're meant to do. So Regal Select
- 23:36you can get it on sale Matt and Eggshell through July thirty percent off.
- 23:41Kay, fantastic. Thanks for tolerating my conversation about superheroes and all of that.
- 23:45No problem, Thanks Dan. All right, we'll be back in just
- 23:48a minute, and I've got another special guest with me and we'll be talking
- 23:52about the Unexpected Red theory. That's all. Just ahead and stick around.
- 24:00Well, maybe you've heard of a new color theory that's been circulating the innerwebs.
- 24:04This one's called the Unexpected Red theory. You're listening to the Repco Lite
- 24:08home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And this unexpected Red theory is something
- 24:14that was coined by a TikToker. And since I'm really not an established or
- 24:18expert TikToker, I had to go looking for help to talk about this.
- 24:23And after drudging around, you know, and I got to the bottom of
- 24:26the barrel of all the people, you know, maybe this person no,
- 24:30not interested, Maybe this person not interested. Nope, this person can't,
- 24:34this person can't. Finally I got to somebody who said yes, and Haley's
- 24:40here with us now. Haley, very nice, thanks for joining us.
- 24:45I was very excited about that intro. I was very happy to introduce you
- 24:48that way. You weren't the body you had fun Dan. You weren't the
- 24:51bottom of the barrel. You were the bottom of the barrel. But that's
- 24:53because you were the only person in the barrel. I see that I was
- 24:56looking in even better, not that you were in a barrel. It's figurative,
- 25:00the only choice, So fine, I'll take it anyway. Let's talk
- 25:06about this unexpected red theory, the whole idea, you know, let's just
- 25:08summarize it very quickly. The idea is this, adding any amount of red
- 25:12to a room where it doesn't belong automatically makes that room look more pulled together.
- 25:18Right, you know that's the theory in a nutshell. But what's the
- 25:21basis behind it? I mean, if we start trusting every single TikToker out
- 25:25there, well I think anarchy. Isn't that where that goes? Right?
- 25:30We've got to figure out does this even make it fun? Because really I
- 25:33could start making claims on the TikTok Well you do, don't you? Well?
- 25:36Yeah, but I feel like I know what I'm talking about at least
- 25:38there I'm going to start just talking about random stuff. We don't know who
- 25:42this person is we don't know this whole theory. Does this make sense?
- 25:45Why hasn't it been talked about before? If it's so brilliant? Yeah,
- 25:49I think it's really interesting. When I first saw a post about it,
- 25:55I was kind of curious, you know, because all they're doing really is
- 25:57saying, you know what you describe that adding red to a space automatically improves
- 26:03the design of a space, and then they've just got pictures that play right,
- 26:07here's all these examples of just this little bit of red in a room,
- 26:10and how much better it is because of that. I've seen crime scenes
- 26:12where red is added and it didn't improve the look of the space, It
- 26:15didn't make it look complete. Well, it probably improved the crime. Well,
- 26:18it made the crime scene complete, But well that kitchen just looks right
- 26:22now, doesn't it? So dark? Yeah? I don't know how to
- 26:30come back from no, I know, but well, the idea is that
- 26:32you can say that and then you show a bunch of pictures. But what
- 26:34I was trying to say is there are going to be other pictures that can
- 26:37demonstrate that maybe that's not the case, right, So is there something behind
- 26:41it more than just a few get pictures to make a case for something.
- 26:45I started digging into maybe some scientific explanations behind this theory, you know,
- 26:49to really give it some chops, because I'm also curious, you know,
- 26:52is this really something or is this just a trend right that everyone's kind of
- 26:56globbed onto. Well, I think there are a lot of scientific basises for
- 27:03why this might be true. Is it basis bases? That doesn't sound right.
- 27:07It neither sound right. It's a lot of firm scientific stuff backs this
- 27:14up. Yeah. The first one is there's a lot of evolutionary associations with
- 27:18the color red right reds impact is going to be traced back to our roots.
- 27:23It's very attention grabbing, and that's because it could have signaled danger to
- 27:29us, so like right away we're very engaged to the situation. Or it
- 27:33could have signaled that there's a ripe fruit available, both of which are very
- 27:36attention grabbing in you know, our distant past. Boy, there's a strawberry.
- 27:41I'm gonna get my machete out and cut it out. Oh there's blood
- 27:45everywhere. My machete must be sharp, right, Both of those would get
- 27:48my attention, very attention grabbing color. Yeah, all right, And you
- 27:52know, adding it to a space then is very attention grabbing because of these
- 27:57evolutionary roots that we have with this color. So what you're getting at there
- 28:02is one of the questions I had for down the Road is basically, red
- 28:07is important? Is an important part of this? Yeah, it's not just
- 28:10any bold color right, exactly the same results. You know, I don't
- 28:14think that we're going to have a trend where like now it's the unexpected lime
- 28:18green very you know, like because that could very easily be the next thing
- 28:22that people are putting out there, the unexpected purple theory. I don't think
- 28:26that delete that TikTok post fun of it. That's where I was going.
- 28:30I don't think that those would have the same impact. So red is specific,
- 28:34and that's one of the reasons. That's a scientific basis exactly. Another
- 28:38one, this has you know, some biological ties and probably again tied to
- 28:45some of those evolutionary roots. But the color red has like an intrinsic response
- 28:51biologically for us. So it actually increases our heart rate, increases our blood
- 28:56pressure when we see it, So it puts us on kind of that heightened
- 29:00awareness mode. Do you notice that? Do you see red and you just
- 29:06notice, Wow, everything's elevated. I feel like Spider Man. Potentially,
- 29:10if you're like surrounded in it, maybe you might feel it. But I
- 29:12think that whether we feel these things or not, you know, even a
- 29:18small amount of that that maybe we're not conscious of still impacts us. Okay,
- 29:22all right, So we've got a couple of different things, and I
- 29:26think that you know, like I just talked about making us you know,
- 29:32in a more heightened state, it's going to raise or heart rate, elevator
- 29:34blood pressure. That sounds like maybe a bad thing. I was just gonna
- 29:37say, right, that sounds great. Why don't we go over a Dan's
- 29:41house. You know, we're gonna sit in the living room and everybody's gonna
- 29:45have elevated heart rate, right, Like, either for breath angry, you
- 29:49know, an angry response, or it could be a very excited response.
- 29:52Like I feel like it really vacillates between those two different emotions. Right.
- 29:56Nice to be able to and control which I'll come you get rather than a
- 30:02roll of plis. Hopefully, because we're in our homes and we're seeing something
- 30:07positive, it's more towards that excited state where we're seeing an elevated heart rate
- 30:11rather than like, oh my gosh, that like plant makes me so mad
- 30:15because it's red, right, Like, that's not what we're going for here,
- 30:19right, And a lot of it is going to be scale. Of
- 30:22course, it's going to be scale. They're not talking about throwing no red
- 30:26all over the place when it's everywhere, right, it's a little bit.
- 30:30So it's just teasing you along, exactly. And I do think that makes
- 30:34some sense, you know, in a design where there are a lot of
- 30:40just monochromatic colors, which I think a lot of us gravitate towards in design
- 30:44because it feels easier to just get tints and shades of one single color,
- 30:48you know, whether that's neutrals. I just have a bunch of different shades
- 30:52of neutrals or tints of that neutral. I've got white, beige, and
- 30:56maybe some brown, like that's my color palette. Like, ultimately, that's
- 30:59very mono chromatic. And the same is true if we use blue. If
- 31:03we have blue in a room and it's navy on the walls, and then
- 31:07we've got oh these you know, lighter blue and white accent colors, those
- 31:10are it's a very monochromatic color scheme, and that really doesn't do a whole
- 31:15lot to engage us with a space. And actually studies have shown that monochromatic
- 31:21spaces can be slightly stressful to us because there's not enough variation for us to
- 31:26be engaged in the space. It doesn't find that's so hard to believe because
- 31:30I work in an entirely gray room and I would never say I'm a stressed
- 31:36person. So yeah, that makes sense to me. That was sarcasm,
- 31:41folks, because I don't know that stress ever leaves. I live in this
- 31:47heightened awareness zone, elevated heart rate. I burn bright, but I'm gonna
- 31:52burn out quick. So when you find there's a new host for the show,
- 31:56you'll know the stress got me. And if i'd have just had little
- 31:59pops of red in the room, maybe I would have made it another week
- 32:01or two. What it felt a little better. Yeah, yeah, all
- 32:05right, well that does make sense. You know. A third reason is
- 32:08it does have an emotional response to us, not just you know, angry
- 32:13or excited, but red is also associated with passion, with warmth, with
- 32:17Santa Santa it is. Don't laugh about that. Those are all positive things.
- 32:23So it's really it's a nice color to have in a space when you're
- 32:25designing around you know, being social, being intimate, like those are all
- 32:30warm, nice feelings to have, and red is going to give you that,
- 32:36all right. So I don't know how many other scientific facts you have
- 32:40for us. I do want to ask a question about the red. You
- 32:44know, normally when we talk on the show, we'll talk about what you
- 32:46need to bring, you know, maybe bring red in. But we'll say
- 32:49then we'll come back and say, well, red can be a pink,
- 32:52it can be kind of a terra cotta color, right, it's just got
- 32:54to have a little bit of that, you know, the hue to it
- 32:59to some stunt. Right, is that the case here? Or does it
- 33:01need to be a pretty bright, fire enginey kind of a red. I
- 33:05don't think pink counts here. I don't. Yeah, I don't think that's
- 33:09going to have the same visual impact. Okay, stop for a second.
- 33:14And more importantly, was that a dumb question? No? Okay, now,
- 33:16go ahead. Wanted to clarify, not a dumb question. Would you
- 33:22say it was a brilliant question? I think it was a good question.
- 33:25Okay, Well I'm not going to go like so far, Okay, all
- 33:30right, all right, I won't interrupt anymore, So pink doesn't count.
- 33:34Why, It's just not going to have that same response that we're looking for.
- 33:37You know, I think the reason that this unexpected red theory is successful
- 33:42is because of the responses that we have on an emotional level, a physiological
- 33:46level, and an evolutionary level that makes this true. And I pink is
- 33:52not necessarily associated with those same things that it is some of those oranger colors
- 33:57that could kind of lean Yeah, I think that is as long as it's
- 34:00a really strong hue still and we're not looking at like a pastel version of
- 34:04that, I think it still counts still, Like it could be a very
- 34:07strong brick color that would give you a similar sort of effect on a room.
- 34:12And ultimately, what I think this does in another you know, kind
- 34:15of nice little fact, is that the wavelength of red is something that our
- 34:21eyes automatically sort of gravitate to in a room right off the bat, and
- 34:27so that is a really easy way to create a focal point in a room,
- 34:30because our eyes are always going to look at the thing that is the
- 34:35warmest with the most contrast first. So I think that's a lot of what
- 34:38makes this work on an interior design level is that you're just creating a really
- 34:44easy focal point, and those are often lacking in spaces where you haven't hired
- 34:50a professional. Most of us are not really focused on creating focal points.
- 34:54Yeah, I got like a living room that has we talk about it all
- 34:58the time. I don't even know that I want to repaint the thing because
- 35:00it's such fodder for the show. But it's got all these white patches all
- 35:07around the upper wall to onto the ceiling where paint is peeled. And I've
- 35:10standed it. That's a focal point. Your eye is instantly drawn into that
- 35:15room and you ask, Wow, what happened up there? So not all
- 35:21focal points are great, I guess. Actually, so, I guess.
- 35:27I'm just trying to say it's not always hard to create a focal point,
- 35:29and some of us do it even without hiring a designer. That's true,
- 35:32and it just comes natural to us. So in the last little bit that
- 35:36we got, you didn't know I was going to ask you this, But
- 35:37I'm sure you can reel off some things practically. You know a few practical
- 35:42applications. How do you see this plan out? Yeah, I think that
- 35:45we're really looking for small elements of red, right, So focusing on decorative
- 35:50elements, you know, whether it's a lamp or putting a rug that's smaller
- 35:55in the space, or even like an accent pillow, some art that has
- 36:00read in it, even the frame of the art could be read. Right,
- 36:05You're just looking for these smaller pops of color. A vase is another
- 36:07good example. Maybe a chair, not like an upholstered one, but just
- 36:12a wooden chair that's painted red. That would give you what we're looking for
- 36:15here, just a smaller application of the color in a space where there's not
- 36:20necessarily a lot of other warm tones grabbing your attention at the same time.
- 36:25So it's really about creating that contrast in order to create those focal points in
- 36:30the space. And that's what's making us more engaged with our room and why
- 36:36this theory is potentially so successful. How tricky do you think it's going to
- 36:38be to find the right red, you know, because there's, yeah,
- 36:42there's a lot of different reds. I guess, like any time we're talking
- 36:46about color, start with those smaller color pellets like the Infinity Collection the Historic
- 36:52Collection, those are both going to contain reds that have more depth to them
- 36:57than some of the other collections. Where we're really looking at like a true
- 37:00fire engine red that might be too jarring. Right, We're like walking a
- 37:06fine line here, and you can have a very saturated, bold red without
- 37:12it looking somewhat immature, if that makes sense, Like it can still be
- 37:15sophisticated. Yeah, I know all about immature. Someday maybe I'll learn about
- 37:21sophistication. Doubt that's going to happen. One last question, So I bring
- 37:25in red in some painted elements and maybe I've got red in a couple other
- 37:30small scale right items. Does this red need to be exactly the same?
- 37:36I know I've seen things with blues, for example, where I've brought in
- 37:40varying blues. They don't match at all, but they all work really well
- 37:45together. Yes, how about this theory? Does it need to be the
- 37:49same red all through or can there be slight variation? No? I think
- 37:52there can be slight variations, and honestly, you're probably not even going to
- 37:54notice it a ton if there is, because most likely and there shouldn't be
- 38:00I ams that are grouped together like this, so they're going to be space
- 38:05throughout the room in a way where you're not having a direct comparison, so
- 38:08it's not crucial that they're the exact same red. Okay, so quick question
- 38:14for you, Haley, Yes or no? Do you think I am the
- 38:17kind of person that if I did this and I had people over and I
- 38:21had different reds, I would make sure they were aware that each of these
- 38:24reds? Are you know these aren't actually the same. You probably didn't notice.
- 38:29Do you think these are different? I would or would not be that
- 38:31person. I know what the answer is. You probably would be that,
- 38:36Oh yeah, I'd have that picture frame off the wall. I'd be showing
- 38:37it next to the other thing. Yeah, look, these are different.
- 38:40I put them together. All right. If you have any questions about this
- 38:45or anything with color, make sure you swing through any Repcolite and we've got
- 38:50color experts on staff who will walk you through whatever you're working on. Right,
- 38:53They'll get you all the advice you need so you can make the right
- 38:57decision. All right. That is going to do what the clock is telling
- 39:00me. I've got to wrap it up, and I've got to do so
- 39:02quickly, so we will do that. If you want to catch this episode
- 39:06again, you can find it online. At repco light dot com. Make
- 39:08sure you do that, and yeah, whatever you do today makes your paints
- 39:12a part of it. Have a great weekend everybody, and I'll see you
- 39:15next week. I'm Dan Hansen. Thanks for listening.
