- 0:15SPEAKER_00: I'm Coach Smith, your host.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Buckle your chin strap, put your mouthpiece in, and tie your cleats in double knots.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Games of the Week for week three.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Today I will analyze two high-profile matchups.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: These games are not only significant from a Section 4 perspective, but also New York State.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Between these four teams, there has been only one loss.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: And also, by popular demand, this episode will include the fan favorite segment, Ask Coach Smith.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Now on to our first game.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Our first game is between two highly ranked teams.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: One will be the Owego Riverhawks coming at 2-0 and currently ranked 9th in New York State Class B.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: They'll travel to take on the Horseheads Blue Raiders, who are currently 2-1 and rank 14th in New York State in Class A.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: That contest will take place Friday evening, September 27th at 7 p.m.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: at Horseheads High School.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: The Riverhawks have scored 62 points and only given up six.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 56.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Owego has begun their season with two very decisive wins.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: They shut out Unendicott 34-0 at UE, then took care of Norwich 28-6 for their home opener last week.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Against Norwich, the Riverhawks finished with a total of 324 yards of offense.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: 291 of those yards were on the ground.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Paladino led the way with 92 yards on 18 carries.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Bushbaum caught a pair of passes for 33 yards and had a 30-yard TD run erased due to a penalty.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Quarterback Lewis completed two of his three pass attempts.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Now for the Horseheads Blue Raiders.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: They've scored 118 points total over three games and only allowed 41.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 77.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: They experienced their first loss last week to a very good Waverly team, 21 to 34.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: In that game, Lucas Mosier ran 13 times for 97 yards and a touchdown.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Bryce Thomas carried 11 times for 56 yards and a score.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Jackson Burkhart had four carries for 10 yards, and rounding it out was Patrick Laney, three carries for 18 yards.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: From a passing perspective, Cardinelli was 10 of 25 for 129 yards and one touchdown.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Receiving, Miles Woodhouse caught two for 53 yards and one score.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Griffin Stevens caught three passes for 30 yards.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Burkhart two for seven yards.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Mosier one for 24 yards.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And Keegan Zeller two for 15.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So you can see they really have a lot of student athletes that they spread the ball around to.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I believe the keys to the game, both defenses will be tested.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: I believe the game will be determined by how well Horseheads can move the ball and score against the Riverhawks stingy D.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Horseheads' D will have their hands full stopping a Weagles offense, which has rolled the first two weeks.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Now on to our other game.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: This game is going to be played between two undefeated and currently number one ranked New York State teams in their respective classifications.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: The Waverly Wolverines in Class C are going to travel to Maine Ewell to take on the Spartans of Class B.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: That game will be played Saturday afternoon, September 28th at 1.30 p.m.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: at Main Endwell.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Waverly has scored 115 points and allowed 24.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: That's a difference of plus 91.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: And last week they beat a good horseheads team 34 to 21.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: In that game, Ben Shaw was 1 for 11 yards.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Fletcher Good carried 7 for 27 yards.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Colston Keithly carried three times for 16 yards.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Cooper Robinson 12 for 27.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Ben Shaw was 22 of 29 for 270 yards and four touchdowns.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So not only can Waverley run the ball, but they can sling it as well.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: From a receiving standpoint, you've got Xavier Watson, the University of Connecticut commit.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: He was had nine receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Dalton Davis caught five for 31 yards and a score.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: And Matthias Wells, their big tight end, one for 14 yards.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Main Anwell has scored 152 points and allowed only 27.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: That's a differential of plus 125.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: And last week they handily beat Shenango Valley 61 to 6, and they actually rested their first unit the entire second half.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Preston Aukker threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Main Enwell started their last two games off with a bang.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: Last week they saw Tyler Matthews haul in a 58-yard touchdown pass from Acker on their first play from scrimmage.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Matthews also scored on a six-yard TD burst.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Vinny Mancini caught Auker's other touchdown pass and later scored on a 47-yard run.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Other main NOL TD runs were with Max Policer of 48 yards, Wyatt Richardson, 24 yards, Aidan Brennan, 13 yards, and Zachary Battalini, 2 yards.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: The keys to the game, both teams are strong in all three facets: offense, defense, and the kicking game.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Winning football always begins with solid offensive and defensive line play.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: The pressure will be on both Ds to stop the other high-powered offense.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Specifically, Waverly's receiving tandem of 6'4, 205-pound, as I mentioned, UConn, University of Connecticut commit Xavier Watson.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: He demands double coverage, which opens the airways for Speister, Colson Keithley, who averages 25.5 yards per catch.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Waverly has a huge line who opened the holes for Fletcher, for Fletcher Good, who averages 4.5 yards a carry, and Cooper Robinson, who averages 4.8 yards a carry.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Ben Shaw completes 65% of his passes with an average of 13.1 yards per completion.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Maine Edwell is also strong in all three phases.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: They are led by quarterback Preston Acker and running back by committee with Vinnie Mancini, Landon Rolo, and hard-running Jaden Branch.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: These three running backs are also the linebackers on D.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: This game has the potential to be one that's going to be discussed for years.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Now for Ask Coach Smith.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Adam writes, recently I attended a local high school football game and witnessed what I thought should have been a penalty.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: It was late in the game, and the quarterback was in the pistol formation, took the snap, and threw the ball forward to the ground to stop the clock.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: I thought the quarterback had to take the snap directly from the center in order to clock the ball.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Thank you for your question, Adam.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: This rule was updated beginning with the 2020 season.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Prior to 2020, the only option was for the student athlete playing quarterback to take a direct hand-to-hand snap and immediately throw the ball forward to the ground to stop the clock.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: Now, in addition to receiving the ball hand to hand, the student athlete has the option of clocking the ball from the shotgun or pistol formation.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: The ball must go immediately from the snapper to the student athlete in position to take the snap and be thrown immediately forward to the ground.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: The ball cannot be mishandled in any way before being thrown forward to the ground.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: If it is, this would be ruled intentional grounding.
