- Katya: Welcome to Rock the Life, a podcast for fans, by fans. I'm Katya. Amy: I'm Amy. Katya: Amy, today we wanted to get on to record Amy: Mm. Katya: something about a legend that we lost, two legends that we lost this week. And Amy: Ugh, two. Katya: I'm gonna start with Dolly Parton, which we got the news Amy: Mm-hmm. Katya: of Dolly's passing while we were actually recording and just trying Amy: Yep. Katya: to stop and gather gather together of like the feelings of it. And I always felt that when Amy: Mm-hmm. Katya: Dolly Parton mean she to part of the world it was gonna be a big deal. Cause as we looked at it, I mean, she is a definition of someone who rocked the life. Right? I mean, think of Amy: my gosh, so much. Katya: The time that she came out, and what she did as herself didn't apologize, you know, she was who she was. And like universally loved, right? Like universally loved. I mean, the flags at are being Amy: Yeah. Yeah. Strong woman. Katya: flown at half staff for Dolly Parton, right? Because she truly is a legend and not to mention how amazing her music was. But her philanthropy and what she has done for just education, her book drives, Amy: Mm-hmm. Katya: Dollywood. So I have family in East Tennessee and Dolly Parton Amy: Mm-hmm. Katya: and Dollywood is everything. And everything to that little part of the world, and it just emanated to the rest of it. So Amy, I have to ask you, what is your first Amy: Yeah. Yeah. I, yeah. Katya: memory with Dolly Parton? Amy: Being exposed to Dolly Parton came from my dad who lives in Georgia and I remember as a young girl, probably three years old, watching two shows back to back at my dad's and it was Dukes of Hazzard and Hee Haw. And Hee Haw would show like their Katya: Ha ha sweet. Amy: reruns and stuff and in 1974, I know, and I remember Minnie Pearl but in her hats with the tags in 1974 Dolly had I think it was her second or third appearance and while I was only a year old at that time I did watch the reruns with my dad of Hee Haw and in that episode so that was my first exposure to Dolly Parton Katya: But he ha. Amy: and Dolly would I mean she was all over the place Grand Ole Opry I mean you just didn't grow up in the South or have family in the South and not know who Dolly Parton was at all period. It was just that way. Katya: L always part of like always part of our lives, I think. She has always been part Amy: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Katya: of it. Amy: Yeah. Uh-huh. And, like, I remember watching Nine to Five with my mom. I loved that movie. Katya: I remember that too. Amy: I loved- and I loved that song. just... Katya: Working nine to five. Amy: Yep. What a way to make a living. Getting by. Ain't no taking. Yeah. Katya: And you know, I s I saw the cutest thing of like which I hadn't realized, you know, Dolly have, you know, the wigs, the nails, and she said Amy: Mm-hmm. Katya: on nine to five, she played her nails. The acrylic nails and like did the tune to nine Amy: yeah. Katya: to five on her nails. And I of course I just got mine undone. So and I was Amy: I love it. Katya: like, Yeah, it just who she yeah, who she was and the Amy: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Katya: the impact. Amy: Yeah, I mean, and we... Katya: Of how you can do so much good in the world. Amy: I know, and I love that example. And I love how she never apologized for being exactly who she was. And, you know, I remember at one point, I think I'd heard, you know, how long it took her to get ready. And I thought, holy crap. I thought that's so long. But then you just look at it you go, but she presents herself in the way that she wanted to, in the way that I just, I admire that so much now. And, you know, I don't know if I ever told you. Matthew, up until he was five years old, participated in her book program. So we have a collection uh-huh Katya: Like how amazing is that? Amy: uh-huh of the Dolly Parton books. Katya: Some people build rockets for their self glory to go in space and other people teach people to read with the love of books. Libraries and books like. Amy: teach people how to Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yep. I love it. Katya: My hero. And also this week we lost Tim Curry. actor and you know that's it my for Tim Curry it is an iconic moment that people talked about but it's also one that I remember and it's when he stepped out on the Rocky Horror Picture Show. And from there when I lived in London, Amy: huh. Katya: it was one of my favorite things to do was go watch Rocky Horror on you know in the Amy: He horror picture show. Katya: in the ther in the theaters and watch the live performances and it was from yeah I it was just Amy: Yeah. Did you guys get out while you were watching Katya: Is incredible, it's iconic. Amy: and do the dance and all the things? you guys? Yeah. Yep. Katya: yeah. And people were in the audience, like they had the umbrellas at the right cue. It was a whole thing. And I I went once and I was hooked. I love it. And Amy: Hooked, yeah. Katya: like the he was such a legendary part of that. Amy: My first exposure to Tim Curry was in the Tom Cruise movie Legend and that was actually my first exposure to fantasy and so it stuck with me being the Lord of the Rings nerd that I am and and a love of all of that. Katya: Yeah, absolutely. Amy: That movie I loved like I want to find it and go back and watch it again and then of course we did the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I have to tell you, okay, this is rude, but it's so funny and it's just epitomizes Rocky Horror Picture Show. So, I think I was 16 or 17 at Rocky Horror and I received a pickup line that I still remember to this day. Do you want to hear it? It's gross. Katya: From someone who is in the audience? Amy: Yeah! Katya: Okay. Amy: Okay, so this guy comes, you know, he's sitting next to me or whatever and he goes, you know, I'm psychic. And I'm like, yeah? And then he proceeded to tell me, I don't know if I can tell it. I'm gonna blush. He said, and I'll take it out if you don't like it, but he goes, you know, I'm psychic. And I'm like, no. How so? Like, prove it. And he goes, I know how many pubic hairs you have. Is that not the grossest thing you've ever heard? Katya: Is there a punchline? Amy: What? Like, I cannot, it is, Katya: I was hoping for a punchline. Amy: no, that was it. But that was the epitome of Rocky Horror Picture Show for me because we all got up and we did the time warp and we did all this stuff and that's, I mean, I swear I was 17. So this is, how many years do I remember this? Katya: That's horrible. Amy: I mean, I just, I never would have thought that anybody would have said, anything like that. And here we are at Rocky Horror Picture Katya: That's pretty bad. Amy: Show and that's what comes out. It's awful. It's awful, but it was so Katya: Well okay, also no that okay, we're gonna get off that. so what did you think of Clue? Like Amy: Do know what I remember? Actually, more than clue, my affection with Tim Curry comes from him voicing Nigel Thornberry. I loved the show Wild Thornberrys with my kids. We loved Rugrats. We loved all with my older kids. Katya: I listen to that music all the time. Yeah. Amy: Uh-huh. And so I more even than clue, I really appreciate Wild Thornberries. Like that's Katya: Now that in yeah. Amy: what I wanted to watch yesterday besides legend was looking up Wild Thornberries. Katya: And I also loved Hitman Annie too, because like the nineteen eighties Annie, like I loved that one because that was definitely Amy: Yes! Yes! my gosh. Katya: one that we had on like VHS and DVD that we could Amy: Yep. Yep. Katya: just play over and over. That included I loved Clue too, because I loved Amy: That was a movie I went to go see. Yeah, I went to see that in the theaters. Mm-hmm. I just, it's so epic. The losses this week are just are epic. And so I'm just trying to hold on to the things that I loved the most, you know, about Dolly and Tim. Katya: Yeah, and you know, the beautiful thing with Dolly is that she created such a world in Tennessee, everything from Dol of course Dollywood and her truck stops Amy: To Hollywood. Katya: that I hope I hope it all continues. And, you know, whatever Amy: Yeah. Katya: trust or she built afterward can still do great things with giving. Amy: Yeah, I can't imagine that it wouldn't because I feel like with Dolly and her wisdom she would have surrounded herself with people who would follow her wishes and go that route. Katya: And she seems to also have a beautiful family, right? A beautiful family that yeah, that she's cultivated in. So I hope so. Amy: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Katya: Okay. and so you say is your is your favorite dolly song nine to five? Amy: that she performed? Yes. I will, I do have an affection of course for Whitney and Eric's version of I Will Always Love You. I mean, how can you not? I really think that Eric Gronwald did that song justice as did Whitney, but they both really did great at that. And I feel like I really want to go do a deep dive and find out what other songs we know and love that are iconic that she had her hand in that we just may not realize at Katya: Okay, let's go do it. Amy: this point. yeah. Top 10 Dolly Parton songs. Katya: We will we will do a we will do a we'll do a top ten dolly. And I I have Amy: Yeah. Katya: I know the twins I'm gonna be saying for part of it too. Okay, Amy: All right. Katya: with that Amy: I love you babe. Katya: Yeah, love you too. And don't forget Amy: Don't forget, rock the life. Katya: Rock the line.
