- 9:00I promise you nothing will happen because any of them before, No,
- 9:07I know none of you. No identification sergeants, folks, I can assure
- 9:13you that these men cannot charge any Run on the next bunch. Okay,
- 9:20run them off. You want to see me then, Yeah, this one's
- 9:37gotta be a little salty. Respect the witnesses to make an identification? Did
- 9:43you? And I had hopes that the others have once see any difference?
- 9:48Because it's time somebody's been killed, all the more reasons for not saying anything.
- 9:52Scared, scared stiff. Now I'd probably be just as scared. They're
- 9:56just families. To think about it, I know it. What'd you want
- 10:00to see me for? Because it's going to be a little while before I
- 10:03cooled off. If you're not going to take it out of me, the
- 10:07rest of you don't. I'm going to tell him what I think of him.
- 10:11He knows what you think of him, Ben, I haven't ever told
- 10:13him. Do you mean sure you had? Not? All of us?
- 10:16You better cool out after I tell him? Do you think that's a good
- 10:20idea? No, I don't forget it. He knows it. Won't do
- 10:24any good. No, okay, I mean no, I'm not going to
- 10:28forget it dead. I know I'm not using my head, but dog gone
- 10:33it. Okay, okay, you want to come along. I wouldn't miss
- 10:37it. You think it's a mistake, though you wouldn't do it? H
- 10:43What do you mean I wouldn't do it. Sure, i'd do it,
- 10:46but I still think it's a mistake. If it was up to me,
- 10:48I do just what you're doing. But I can't see why you should be
- 10:52as stupid as I am. I haven't pounded a beat in a long time,
- 10:56and I could use the exercise. I see your boys, sit down,
- 11:13Let me get your drink. No thanks you though? All right?
- 11:16What can I do for? You got three of your boys down on the
- 11:20tank? Three of my boys, Holstein N I like to like to know
- 11:28what I can do for. I got them booked on a murder rapin,
- 11:35not tryank? What I got to do with me? One of those boys
- 11:39beat up a man named Goldberg, beat him a band. Goldberg done one
- 11:43of those boys dinner, Not tryank? Who says so? I don't that
- 11:46is as much good as a return can hold him? With that kid for
- 11:50seventy two hours. Sure, I can't buy you with a sage and the
- 11:54drink. I didn't come down here to play with you, you don't.
- 11:56I just what did you come down here for? Got three? You've been
- 12:00running numbers free and easy in this time for a long time. You know
- 12:03you've got every small businessman intimidated up to this, serving liut. You push
- 12:07them around, scat them to death, and make yourself about four million a
- 12:09year. You say that too. Now, A little guy named Goldberg doesn't
- 12:13want your lousy wrecking in the shop. So one tour or three of your
- 12:16gorillas try to change all the way you listen to what I have to say.
- 12:20One, you're running off at the mouth. You're listening to life,
- 12:22not that kind of liable. I will listen to you. Go chake yourself
- 12:26out of here, come back with some proof before you start calling names.
- 12:31You don't like something, and get out. You're out of line. Got
- 12:33three. I don't have to sit here and take anything from you. You
- 12:37do. Yeah, why didn't you ever throw that? No, that's not
- 12:41a bad idea. I think it's a fine idea. I'd love for you
- 12:45to start something. If I did, you'd be back time on the beach
- 12:48might be worth it. You trespassed without a warrant. We'll trust then get
- 12:52out of here. I swear it's the last thing I'll do. I'll have
- 12:56you both buckted right back to directing trap you in no sense? You know,
- 13:01I don't think you can do it. I like to see you try
- 13:03them, so all right, which ones are gonna be? You don't I
- 13:07was thrown out or have a busted well? One thing should go through.
- 13:11You and your muscle bound friend are out looking for trouble, and very honestly,
- 13:16I'm not a bit worried. So try and start all the trouble you
- 13:20can. There's no law says I gotta sit around while you're doing it.
- 13:24You're going somehow. Look, I put up with them all little. I
- 13:28don't set up to saying you're gonna listen to it like you're too bit for
- 13:31Who do you think you're trying to cry? I don't think you understand you're
- 13:35gone right. I don't understand who'll put you up to this? Huh?
- 13:37Who did? You're both too smart to pull off a something like this?
- 13:41Who wants to ride me? You just don't get a thing, No explain
- 13:46it to me the lieutenants in a nasty mood. That's it. That's it.
- 13:52Now you're gonna call your boys or have as busted or walk out of
- 13:56here. We say you're gonna listen, which is gonna be? Shoot off
- 14:05your face? Go ahead, get it off your back. You've got a
- 14:09lot of people scanned, you know, a lot of people worried about what
- 14:13you might do if they point out one of your boys. One of your
- 14:16boys went a little father time. I'm going to get him and I'm gonna
- 14:22get you. That's all of it. For a while, didn't get out.
- 14:28You get it now? Don't you get what we just wanted you to
- 14:31know? How much you're scarce? Ben? Your hour was finn. Hey,
- 15:13you need to shave boy to get up late. She wants to see
- 15:18you, Ben, little hot You don't. Uh, I want to see
- 15:22me too. You'll probably get around. There's just Ben for get it over
- 15:26with it. Look, I was it at this too. All of you
- 15:28want you'll start yelling, I'll see you upstairs. Okay? Uh oh,
- 15:39Cally, Ben, would you mind telling me what in the world you were
- 15:43thinking about? You know what I was thinking about, Charlie. Since when
- 15:46have you gotten so holy or now I can remember a couple of times.
- 15:50Now, wait a minute, I haven't climbed up your back yet, shy,
- 15:54but I'm supposed to and you got it coming. Okay. Nobody likes
- 15:58mister Hud any less than I do. But we haven't got anything on him.
- 16:00He's still a citizen. He's got a bell of him, a rotten
- 16:03barrel. I don't care how rotten it is. It causes trouble. And
- 16:07you're a cop, seven of the people. You can't go pushing people around
- 16:11just because of the hot head, no matter who they are. Okay,
- 16:12Okay, what am I talking to? Get out of here? Say up
- 16:17in the morning. They should get out on the rights out of bed seven
- 16:19o'client. Yeah, man, yeah, you have fun, Yeah, Charlie,
- 16:27ah lot. We released the three U boys then got a man on
- 16:45each one of them, and hot they won't bother anyone. You don't.
- 16:48Probably send him out of town and work another city. What is to close
- 16:52up the fourth doors? You know all about? No, these are first
- 16:56offenses. Just make sure they don't put anymore number. These people couldn't afford
- 17:00to have the places closed. But there's a law against the well the people
- 17:06didn't make any money out of it. They wouldn't have broken the law if
- 17:08they hadn't been worried about getting the head the bucket, Appy that someone out
- 17:14here would like to see it, okay, longer than I under, what
- 17:22can we do for you? And I went over and talked to missus Goldberg
- 17:29for a while, and I went back and talked to me away. Yeah,
- 17:33what did you talk about about coming down here in the line up?
- 17:37When I said I couldn't identify any of the men he had come into my
- 17:41store, I lied, two of those men been in my store. They
- 17:48made me sell the numbers. They pushed me around. Which two men,
- 17:52Miss Sanderson, Tommy young Goode post get a phonography? I hear it this,
- 18:11Charlie. We can get two of these boys on mister Henderson's testimony.
- 18:14We might even make one of them crack and implicate, you thought, but
- 18:17we still won't nail anybody for the moon. That this's tough, And I'm
- 18:21just scared though, No, not these boys. But you will be plenty
- 18:25worried if he knows that we've got a witness that will send two of his
- 18:26boys to stir he put. We're that quiet until the trial is said.
- 18:32We just pick up Young and whole stamp and say nothing about mister Henderson.
- 18:34Well, he pick up mister Young and mister holstop. Yes, but I
- 18:38want you to to know who our witnesses. I have no witness at all.
- 18:42Henderson has agreed to help us out. He knows just what he's up
- 18:45against, donod Kellie. All he wants is his family to be out of
- 18:48the way in a safe place, and we can do that. But then,
- 18:52you know how tough it is to look sodas Henderson. I don't have
- 18:56three detectives on in twenty four hours a day, but I wanted to look
- 18:59like he's alone. You those no do me. He knows you wouldn't let
- 19:03a witness out on the streets without protection. Well, I'm gonna put an
- 19:06obvious man with Henderson. When we think one of you Tho's torpedoes are ready
- 19:08to go to work, we'll pull the man off. Make it look like
- 19:11it got lazy. I want somebody to try for Randerson. It's the only
- 19:15way we'll get any of the UDO crowd to tell us about the Goldberg murder.
- 19:19Okay, how are you going to know when you those boy gets ready
- 19:23to go to work. I've got somebody on everybody. You don't knows you
- 19:29this mother? Want some coffee? Oh, I've had seven cups over here,
- 19:38sloly, I think I'm getting cold, but everybody's got what he's laying
- 19:47low. None of his boys have even gone near Henderson, who's with Helly
- 19:51for today and Fisher McCarthy clients playing it out in the open. Yeah,
- 19:56I think McCarthy's wife goes there with baby any day. Live. Want to
- 20:00get him a showers. Thanks, boy, you really got a bad one.
- 20:12You know. I haven't had a cold nearly some woods two weeks.
- 20:22Man, I would have be gone. What you know bloy DNI's coma just
- 20:25tried the gun. Hender bringing him in the said you tagged in case Conway
- 20:37wants to talk, okay, lieutenant. Oh and you know looks so happy
- 20:45to down early in the morning. Side hear you trying to take a shout
- 20:49at our witness. You know something I should have known better. I must
- 20:56be getting come feeble in the head. I knew you had one cop on
- 20:59him. The spot him right away, then when he went outside for a
- 21:03smoke. I never figured you had more boys on Henderson, Big stupid me
- 21:07just thought how lucky was that cop went off and left Henderson like that?
- 21:11Well, we all make mistakes on it, yes, sir, I guess
- 21:14so. Well, sure do feel silly, and we're gonna try our best
- 21:18to see that you get life. Yes, sir, So you have a
- 21:19company hall stamp and yellow get five to ten. That ain't much company,
- 21:26rook sellers. I'm just a country boy and I put my foot in it.
- 21:30But I figure you got something on your mind. You wouldn't be down
- 21:33here. We want to ask you some questions, Yes, sir, we
- 21:36want to make a deal. H We don't have to make it there.
- 21:38You mean, if I was to tell you who'd done that killing, you
- 21:41wouldn't help me out of prison a little earlier. That's a long time.
- 21:45You turn the states in, it's bound to be easier. How much easier?
- 21:49Well maybe ten with time off of good behavior, we don't know.
- 21:53Yeah, ten, it's a lot better than life, cellars. I don't
- 21:57mind doing time because I got plumb kill. But just being a country boy
- 22:02who likes fresh air, I didn't think I got standing for the rest of
- 22:04my life. George Holstein killed that fellow. I was with him, you
- 22:10got him locked up? Tommy yo, Yes, where were you with mister
- 22:14Hudo? You can ask him. I'm going to boy. I sure didn't
- 22:18make a mistake, didn't I you assured it? Country boy of the tuber,
- 22:45you want something? I want to talk to you. Joh what not?
- 22:49Gon on in sucle Visard having the lock learn and nothing in here but
- 23:00that singing. Yeah. I can't just shut that country boy up like a
- 23:07nuts shut up showing the confession and read it good the last paragraph. He's
- 23:19being you, ernest, get to me because that dirty rat rack rack burn
- 23:34that rack he's trying to he kined it. I got it right here,
- 23:38yeah, yeah, right here, he find it. You got a few
- 23:41losy you will He's gotta a burn wrap jurney. Yeah, you right on
- 23:56by, take a little. I want to tell us about you, don't?
- 24:02Yeah, I tell you anything you want to know about you. Don't
- 24:04you turn a problem? How do you expect a fellow to relax? It's
- 24:11all that noise going on? You don cargan doing this? What do you
- 24:38guys world? Get your clothes on? You don't what do you want?
- 24:41You got your clothes on? You're coming down to the station. Where's your
- 24:45warred right here? What's a charge? We got a lot of them.
- 24:51We got a new trio down at the station, singing all over the place.
- 24:55Now let's go. You don't out of the way. I haven't got
- 24:56time break, I got a gun. If I can talk, all right,
- 25:11let's get him out of here, right you both? Yeah? It
- 25:17could help me with you to Okay, what's the matter with you? Oh?
- 25:26I think I'm catching your lousy cold. Welcome back. A pretty a
- 25:52pretty different type of episode, give me. The first half of the episode
- 25:57really built up to the scene with Guthrie going down and telling the bad guy
- 26:03what he thought of him, which I guess is a kind of interesting concept
- 26:11in some ways compared to modern age, or even to the dragnet shows of
- 26:15say, the nineteen sixties, where they went to some effort, you know,
- 26:19in the nineteen sixties Dragnet show to make the point that the police were
- 26:25concerned and they took seriously citizen complaints. In this program, they kind of
- 26:33make a point of not so much, well, at least not if you're
- 26:37somebody like you do. But definitely interesting to hear Raymond Burr as kind of
- 26:47a criminal hillbilly definitely. And I found an interesting article the past week because
- 26:56I've throughout this series, I have just could have sworn that I heard Raymond
- 27:07Burr, but every time we would go to the credits, Raymond Burr's name
- 27:11wouldn't be in there, and I'd be like, was there some soundalt going
- 27:14on? Well, I found out that, and this I think is pretty
- 27:18interesting fact that Raymond Burr for a period in the mid fifties went by the
- 27:23name ray Hartman. And I found this information in the old time radio logus
- 27:30at old dashtime dot com slash otr logs too. So a interesting factoid.
- 27:40And if you hear Raymond Burr from this period in history or ray Hartman from
- 27:45this period in history, you can know that it really is Raymond Burr.
- 27:49All right. Well, coming up this weekend tomorrow I should say, is
- 27:56I'll name the Murderer, a nineteen thirty six mystery movie, and we will
- 28:03make that available to you. It was an interesting film, not the greatest
- 28:08in the world, but I think that it's got some strong points. It's
- 28:17one of those limits of doing public domain films. But definitely take a watch
- 28:22if you'd like to see the video. Nothing really objectionable in it, so
- 28:26I'd say it's probably just a general PG program. All right, Well,
- 28:33we will be back with you on Monday on the radio side. Join us
- 28:37for yours truly Johnny Dollar, and then join us back here next Saturday for
- 28:41the lineup. Meanwhile, follow us on Twitter at Radio Detectives and become one
- 28:45of our friends on Facebook, Facebook dot com Slash Radio Detectives from Boise,
- 28:51Idaho. This is your host, Adam Grahamson and all
