- 0:00Podcasthero.com. Welcome to The Daily Quote, a
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew McGivern for October 10th.
- 0:12Today is World Mental Health Day, an international observance
- 0:16dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and
- 0:20mobilizing efforts to support mental health worldwide.
- 0:24This important day was first celebrated in 1992 at the
- 0:28initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a
- 0:32global organization with members in more than 150 countries.
- 0:37Each year, World Mental Health Day provides an opportunity to
- 0:40raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma,
- 0:45and encourage open conversations about mental well-being.
- 0:49What makes this day crucial is its recognition that mental
- 0:53health is fundamental to our overall health and well-being.
- 0:56For too long, mental health challenges have been
- 0:59stigmatized, misunderstood, and overlooked.
- 1:03World Mental Health Day reminds us that mental health matters
- 1:06just as much as physical health, and that seeking help, and that
- 1:12seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
- 1:17Today's quote comes from author Matt Hay, who once said you are
- 1:22not your illness. You have an individual story to
- 1:26tell. You have a name, a history, a
- 1:31personality. Staying yourself is part of the
- 1:34battle. Peg's powerful words, drawn from
- 1:38his own experience with depression and anxiety, capture
- 1:42something essential about mental health, and World Mental Health
- 1:45Day seeks to emphasize this. Mental illness is something you
- 1:50experience, not something you are.
- 1:54It's a crucial distinction that can make all the difference in
- 1:57how we view ourselves and how we view and how others view us.
- 2:03Think about how we talk about physical illness versus mental
- 2:06illness. We say someone has diabetes or
- 2:11has a broken leg, but we often say someone is depressed or is
- 2:18anxious, as if the condition defines their entire identity.
- 2:24Peg reminds us that mental health challenges are conditions
- 2:27we experience, not identities that consume us.
- 2:33Staying yourself through mental health struggles, maintaining
- 2:36your sense of identity, your interest, your connections to
- 2:39the things and people that matter to you is indeed part of
- 2:43the battle. Mental illness can try to
- 2:46convince you that you're nothing more than your symptoms, but
- 2:50Higgs wisdom tells us that's a lie.
- 2:54You remain a complete person with a unique story, history,
- 2:58and personality that exists beyond any diagnosis.
- 3:04World Mental Health Day encourages this perspective, one
- 3:08that sees people first, not illnesses, and that recognizes
- 3:12the importance of maintaining our sense of self even while
- 3:16dealing with mental health challenges.
- 3:19Everybody experiences some mental health issues at some
- 3:22point in life. It is normal and probably
- 3:27unavoidable. I'm actually going through some
- 3:30right now, and this episode is a great reminder to remember who I
- 3:36am and that I'm not defined by any condition that might afflict
- 3:39me. And whether you're struggling
- 3:42yourself or supporting someone who is, remember that talking
- 3:46about mental health openly, without shame, is how we reduce
- 3:50stigma and create a world where everyone feels safe seeking the
- 3:54help they need. That's going to do it for today.
- 3:58I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:04tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:10with another daily quote.
