- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to the Inside the Birds super Bowl
- 0:12Speaker 1: XL Preview. I'm Jeff Moscher, and we are down to
- 0:17Speaker 1: the last game of the entire twenty twenty five NFL season.
- 0:23Speaker 1: On Sunday, you will have the Seahawks and the Patriots
- 0:26Speaker 1: play in the Super Bowl, and then after that it'll
- 0:29Speaker 1: be nothing but free agency draft OTAs nice little break,
- 0:35Speaker 1: a couple of weeks in the summer, then training camp,
- 0:38Speaker 1: and then you won't see another NFL game after Sunday
- 0:42Speaker 1: until the Hall of Fame game in August, and that
- 0:46Speaker 1: is quite a ways away, and a lot of things
- 0:48Speaker 1: have to happen in between. As I predicted on the
- 0:52Speaker 1: show weeks ago that the Seahawks first the Patriots would
- 0:58Speaker 1: not be one of those Super Bowls that has a
- 1:03Speaker 1: whole lot of catchy storylines. We've had the two weeks
- 1:06Speaker 1: of Sam Darnold revenge tour, some love for Drake may
- 1:12Speaker 1: It didn't even win MVP obviously, Jackson Smith and jig
- 1:16Speaker 1: but got Offensive Player of the Year. So the NFL
- 1:20Speaker 1: honors happened over the couple of days ago, and that's
- 1:24Speaker 1: about it. I feel like just listening to interviews on
- 1:28Speaker 1: Radio Row or media Row, both with our partners at
- 1:31Speaker 1: ninety seven three, ESPN and others the shows. The big
- 1:37Speaker 1: talk of the league is really just all the change.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You got ten new head coaches and with that, you've
- 1:44Speaker 1: got new offensive coordinators and new defensive coordinators. And you know,
- 1:48Speaker 1: the Eagles are going I'll get to them in a minute.
- 1:51Speaker 1: They're they're going through their own thing, completely changing their
- 1:55Speaker 1: identity on offense. You have the Giants now trying to
- 1:58Speaker 1: you know, trying to get back to respectability, hiring a
- 2:02Speaker 1: guy like John Harbaugh, that Cardinals hiring Michael flore You
- 2:07Speaker 1: got the Jesse minter era that's going to start in Baltimore,
- 2:10Speaker 1: and how that goes. Mike Tomlom retires and Mike McCarthy,
- 2:13Speaker 1: of all people, replaces him. It just feels like the
- 2:17Speaker 1: state of the NFL right now, with all the turnover,
- 2:22Speaker 1: has become the dominant storyline. And again the fact that
- 2:27Speaker 1: this Super Bowl was going to be played between two
- 2:31Speaker 1: quarterbacks who have zero combined Super Bowls wins between them
- 2:35Speaker 1: or appearances. Obviously, Drake may is only in his second year.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Sam Darnold was looked at as a bust for the
- 2:44Speaker 1: first few years of his career, as he bounced around
- 2:46Speaker 1: from the Jets to Carolina, San Francisco and then finally
- 2:51Speaker 1: seeing a rebirth of his career last year in Minnesota
- 2:55Speaker 1: and then this year taking it up another level to Seattle.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But they're just not a hole. And you know, Mike
- 3:04Speaker 1: Rabel won super Bowls as a player, but not a coach.
- 3:08Speaker 1: This is just Mike McDonald's second year. There's just not
- 3:11Speaker 1: a lot of saucy, juicy angles, no repeats, no dynasties.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I think there's some legit question about whether or not
- 3:22Speaker 1: either of these two teams will be back in the
- 3:25Speaker 1: super Bowl next year. It's fair. It's hard to go
- 3:28Speaker 1: to the super Bowl back to back. I mean, both
- 3:29Speaker 1: these teams have they deserve to be in the super Bowl.
- 3:32Speaker 1: They have good young players. But you're only gonna keep
- 3:36Speaker 1: the Josh Allens, Lamar Jackson's, the Patrick mahomes Is. You
- 3:40Speaker 1: want to throw hurts in there, you can throw hurts
- 3:42Speaker 1: in there. You know, Joe Burrow healthy. You're only gonna
- 3:45Speaker 1: keep those guys out of the all of them, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 1: out of the super Bowl for so long. And obviously
- 3:53Speaker 1: there will be a lot of attention next year paid
- 3:55Speaker 1: on how these teams, whether they have new coaches, new coordinators,
- 3:59Speaker 1: get them back to where they need to be in
- 4:02Speaker 1: the super Bowl. And in that regard, you know, you
- 4:04Speaker 1: look at if you're an Eagles fan, you look at
- 4:06Speaker 1: a blown opportunity. If you're a Bills fan, you really
- 4:10Speaker 1: look at a blown opportunity to have gotten Josh Allen's
- 4:13Speaker 1: first Super Bowl. Obviously, Josh Allen and the way he
- 4:17Speaker 1: played in that last game with the turnovers, blew his
- 4:20Speaker 1: own opportunity. But I think it is fair to wonder
- 4:25Speaker 1: if these two teams, the Patriots and the Seahawks are
- 4:28Speaker 1: going to be back in the Super Bowl. I think
- 4:31Speaker 1: they'll be competitive, they'll be good. I think they have grown.
- 4:35Speaker 1: The Patriots, you can say, probably a little bit ahead
- 4:39Speaker 1: of schedule. I don't know that they won four games
- 4:42Speaker 1: the year before, so that is quite a jump. The
- 4:44Speaker 1: Seahawks were building toward this. They missed the playoffs last year.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I went through this in the last show, but they
- 4:51Speaker 1: were building. They were a respectable team. Mike McDonald was
- 4:54Speaker 1: considered a great defensive mind. He showed that as the
- 4:58Speaker 1: Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, and you just knew he needed
- 5:01Speaker 1: a couple of years to install his system, get the
- 5:05Speaker 1: kind of players he needed, get the buy in. In
- 5:08Speaker 1: his year one, he tried to build an offense with
- 5:12Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator from college. It didn't work. Year two,
- 5:16Speaker 1: very smart hired a Kubiak, Clint Kubiak, who I felt
- 5:22Speaker 1: who won Assistant Coach of the Year. Was it Josh McDaniels.
- 5:24Speaker 1: He deserves it too, But I thought Clint Kubiak was
- 5:27Speaker 1: for sure a really good candidate for that job, for
- 5:31Speaker 1: that award. He's done an amazing job. He's gonna go
- 5:34Speaker 1: be the Raiders head coach and we'll see if he can,
- 5:38Speaker 1: you know, transform that franchise and work with Mendoza, who
- 5:41Speaker 1: will be the number one pick, and get Ashton gent going,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and we'll see what Clint Kubiak can do with that
- 5:47Speaker 1: offense in Las Vegas and see what kind of defensive
- 5:51Speaker 1: mind he brings in. But the Seahawks were building towards this.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It may have been a little faster. It obviously may
- 5:58Speaker 1: have been dighted by Sam Donald coming in and just
- 6:02Speaker 1: fitting to a t the offense that Kubiak was gonna run,
- 6:05Speaker 1: which was very similar to the offense that Kevin O'Connell runs, conceptually,
- 6:11Speaker 1: not totally the same, but conceptually a lot of what
- 6:15Speaker 1: they do is similar from similar trees, you know, both
- 6:19Speaker 1: that Shannahan McVay style of offense that we keep talking
- 6:22Speaker 1: about here in Philadelphia with the Eagles. So I don't
- 6:27Speaker 1: know that they thought with Sam Donald under center leading
- 6:32Speaker 1: the huddle and really with just one major world class
- 6:36Speaker 1: weapon in Smith and Jigba, that the Seahawks would be
- 6:39Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl and win fourteen games and be
- 6:42Speaker 1: as dominant as they were at times. But they were,
- 6:45Speaker 1: and they're very good, and they deserve to be there.
- 6:48Speaker 1: They are the favorite by three and a half. I
- 6:52Speaker 1: thought if I were handicapping it, I would have made
- 6:55Speaker 1: them five point favorites. I think the Seattle's really good.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I think that No, I'm sorry, maybe it's up to
- 7:03Speaker 1: four and a half now. I think the line started
- 7:05Speaker 1: at three and a half. Up to four and a half,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I would have done five. I know Vegas likes to
- 7:08Speaker 1: go with the half point to make somebody decide on
- 7:11Speaker 1: one side of the fence or the other, so it's fine,
- 7:14Speaker 1: But I do see the Seahawks as in my mind
- 7:18Speaker 1: five point favorites, and I'm not expecting a blowout at all.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I think this will be a good game. But if
- 7:25Speaker 1: you told me it's gonna get away from one team
- 7:29Speaker 1: a little bit and it's gonna wind up being a
- 7:31Speaker 1: ten to thirteen point win, or maybe is a blowout,
- 7:36Speaker 1: it would be Seattle. I cannot see the Patriots blowing
- 7:38Speaker 1: out the Seahawks at all. I can see the Seahawks
- 7:42Speaker 1: with their defense, with how frustrating it can be for offenses,
- 7:47Speaker 1: especially ones that don't play against them all the time.
- 7:50Speaker 1: The Rams know how to move the ball against the
- 7:52Speaker 1: Seahawks because they play each other all the time. It's
- 7:55Speaker 1: like the Cowboys and the Eagles. Eagles have had a
- 7:57Speaker 1: really good defense the last two years. Cowboys have moved
- 7:59Speaker 1: the ball against them because they know what to do.
- 8:01Speaker 1: They see him all the time, and then you know
- 8:05Speaker 1: it just it happens that way. But when you see
- 8:08Speaker 1: a team that does a good team like the Packers
- 8:11Speaker 1: right of the Lions, how to play the Eagles like
- 8:12Speaker 1: a barely score any points. And I think that that
- 8:15Speaker 1: is the frustrating element that the see. The Patriots will
- 8:19Speaker 1: face in going up against the Seahawks team that they're
- 8:22Speaker 1: not familiar with the Seahawks. Their strength is in numbers.
- 8:31Speaker 1: The Seahawks don't have a Micah Parsons type player. They
- 8:35Speaker 1: don't have a Miles Garrett type player. They're very good
- 8:39Speaker 1: in the back end. I'm gon worry the rookie safety
- 8:42Speaker 1: who suffered a little bit of an ankle sprain. So
- 8:44Speaker 1: that's something I watch for. Really good player Witherspoon, really
- 8:47Speaker 1: good corner. But they don't have a corner or a
- 8:51Speaker 1: safety that you would equate to a Quinnon Mitchell or
- 8:54Speaker 1: a Patrick's certain or you know, a safety like an
- 8:59Speaker 1: Ed Reed for you know, the Ravens back in the day.
- 9:02Speaker 1: But they've got eleven guys who play really discipline, who
- 9:07Speaker 1: play really fast, and I shouldn't say eleven because they
- 9:11Speaker 1: can rotate in the front seven. In a way, they
- 9:16Speaker 1: remind me a little bit of the twenty seventeen Eagles
- 9:20Speaker 1: defense in that that was another strengthened numbers team. All right,
- 9:24Speaker 1: The twenty seventeen Eagles did not also have They had
- 9:28Speaker 1: Fletcher Cox, and Fletcher's one of the best of his
- 9:31Speaker 1: era at defensive tackles, no doubt, not trying to say that,
- 9:36Speaker 1: but Fletcher Cox, even at his best, was not Aaron Donald, Okay,
- 9:41Speaker 1: not a world class game changer or just a really
- 9:45Speaker 1: really really good player. What do you make five or
- 9:47Speaker 1: six Pro Bowls? Really really good player? Okay, but if
- 9:49Speaker 1: you look at that twenty seventeen Eagles defense, you think
- 9:53Speaker 1: about the defensive front that they put out there, right,
- 9:57Speaker 1: and that did such a great job until the Super
- 9:59Speaker 1: Bowl when they went Brady threw for five hundred yards
- 10:02Speaker 1: against the defense. But again, on the back end, they
- 10:05Speaker 1: weren't that good. I mean the back end they didn't
- 10:07Speaker 1: have tremendous player. They had good safeties with Rodney and Malcolm,
- 10:12Speaker 1: but corner they were average. I mean they were thrown
- 10:14Speaker 1: out Goblin, you know, they were thrown out. Who's the
- 10:19Speaker 1: guy they got from Buffalo? Now his name escapes me.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I'll think of it in a few minutes. But they
- 10:23Speaker 1: weren't blessed with great cornerback. But the best corner was
- 10:26Speaker 1: a slot corner, Patrick Robinson. It was great for them
- 10:29Speaker 1: that year, but sort of like a one year wonder.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So the twenty seventeen Eagles were tough because up front,
- 10:37Speaker 1: look at what they had on the interior they had
- 10:41Speaker 1: I mentioned Fletcher Cox, Timmy jern again, and then bo
- 10:45Speaker 1: Allen would come in there as a number three. I
- 10:48Speaker 1: mean it was three, really good defensive tackles who could
- 10:52Speaker 1: get in their play. On the edges, they would have
- 10:55Speaker 1: Chris Long, they would have Derek Barnett, of course they
- 10:58Speaker 1: would have BG and then they would have Vinnie Curry.
- 11:02Speaker 1: So those four edges and those three d tackles, and
- 11:06Speaker 1: of course Brandon would move inside to make way for
- 11:09Speaker 1: Chris Long to come in. Right, they give you seven
- 11:12Speaker 1: horses up front, seven guys who could all come in
- 11:16Speaker 1: at any time and be disruptive. I mean, bo Allen
- 11:20Speaker 1: and Vinnie Curry were disruptive players. They were good, solid,
- 11:24Speaker 1: situational role players who at any time could make a
- 11:27Speaker 1: big play and did make a big play, right, And
- 11:31Speaker 1: so they were so tough because they could just come
- 11:33Speaker 1: at you and roll guys in and roll guys out.
- 11:37Speaker 1: And that's how I see the Seahawks defense. It's very talented.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It doesn't have a player who's going to be a
- 11:46Speaker 1: Miles Garrett or a Micah Parsons or someone who has
- 11:49Speaker 1: twenty sacks. They don't have an Aaron Donald. But you know,
- 11:53Speaker 1: their rock, their guy up front is a second year player,
- 11:58Speaker 1: first round pick in the middle, and he's sort of
- 12:01Speaker 1: like their Fletcher Cox and Byron Murphy. Really good player.
- 12:04Speaker 1: But then you get Leonard Williams, who's been a very
- 12:06Speaker 1: solid player throughout his career, DeMarcus Lawrence, who called a shot.
- 12:11Speaker 1: DeMarcus Lawrence left the Dallas Cowboys after a long time
- 12:16Speaker 1: there and being a really good player, and he caused
- 12:20Speaker 1: some issues in an interview because he said I knew
- 12:23Speaker 1: I was just not going to win a Super Bowl
- 12:24Speaker 1: in Dallas, Okay, took a lot of flak from the
- 12:28Speaker 1: Cowboys fans. Well, guess what goes to Seattle Seahawks And
- 12:33Speaker 1: now he's in the Super Bowl, all right, So he
- 12:36Speaker 1: turned out to be right. Took a lot of flat
- 12:38Speaker 1: but he turned out to be right. He's a good
- 12:40Speaker 1: player who can come at you.
- 12:41Speaker 2: So you get Murphy, he got Williams, DeMarcus Lawrence, Jaron Reid,
- 12:47Speaker 2: Derek Hall, boy A Mafi, and then they got good
- 12:50Speaker 2: linebackers Ernest Jones, Drake Thomas.
- 12:54Speaker 1: So they can come at you with so many different
- 12:58Speaker 1: players mentioned. Ammon Warri, who is a safety, who can
- 13:02Speaker 1: play nickel, who can play who can blitz, He can
- 13:05Speaker 1: play multiple positions, he can play, line them up anywhere.
- 13:09Speaker 1: The defense basically revolves around him, and they're really blessed
- 13:14Speaker 1: with good talent in the secondary. Obviously, Devin Witherspoon, Rik Wollen,
- 13:19Speaker 1: former Eagle, Josh Job has stepped up and become a
- 13:21Speaker 1: really good starter for them. They play a lot of nickel.
- 13:24Speaker 1: They play a lot of big nickel. So you're gonna
- 13:26Speaker 1: see guys like you're gonna see all the corners in
- 13:28Speaker 1: the safeties on the field. You're gonna see Amin Warri,
- 13:30Speaker 1: You're gonna see Job, You're gonna see Reek Wallin, Julian
- 13:35Speaker 1: Love safety. They got from the Giants, Witherspoon, and that's
- 13:40Speaker 1: who they are. They are a team that is built
- 13:44Speaker 1: around having solid players from top to bottom. Do they
- 13:48Speaker 1: have superstars? Witherspoon's a really good player. He's he's good.
- 13:56Speaker 1: He's really good. Is he Patrick Scertain? I don't know.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It's it's a tough call. He's a really good player.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I'm in worry. He's a rookie. He might eventually be
- 14:05Speaker 1: a superstar, but he's still a rookie. And upfront, guys
- 14:09Speaker 1: like Murphy good player, Lender Williams, good veteran, but not
- 14:14Speaker 1: guys that you're earmarking for the Hall of Fame. All right, now,
- 14:18Speaker 1: we'll see what happens for three or four years, maybe
- 14:21Speaker 1: some of these guys wind up becoming that good. Maybe
- 14:23Speaker 1: I'm in worry. Maybe Witherspoon, maybe Murphy in five or
- 14:26Speaker 1: six years we're talking about like that player, But right
- 14:28Speaker 1: now we're not. They are just so well coached, so disciplined,
- 14:35Speaker 1: and they've got a lot of really good players and
- 14:38Speaker 1: that's why. And they all buy into the system. They
- 14:40Speaker 1: all play well within the scheme. And like I said,
- 14:44Speaker 1: when you're out there and trying to move the ball
- 14:47Speaker 1: against them, you know, they race to the ball, they
- 14:50Speaker 1: set the edge well, they close in windows, play a
- 14:53Speaker 1: lot of zone, they close in windows, they get pressure
- 14:57Speaker 1: up front. So they're just solid in everything they do.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You've heard the term, the wrestling term, right, the excellence
- 15:07Speaker 1: of execution. That's what they are. They're very, very discipline
- 15:14Speaker 1: and when you look at them, you say, I don't
- 15:17Speaker 1: see a weakness. I don't know where Josh McDaniels from
- 15:21Speaker 1: the Patriots looks at this defense and says, I'm going
- 15:25Speaker 1: to attack this. They're going to run their offense. They're
- 15:27Speaker 1: going to try to push the ball down the field
- 15:29Speaker 1: when they can, if they can, They're going to try
- 15:33Speaker 1: to get the ball to Steph Diggs when they can.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They're they're not gonna change I don't think what they do,
- 15:40Speaker 1: but for sure they're going to have to figure out
- 15:43Speaker 1: where they see the holes. Where do they think they
- 15:47Speaker 1: can get their quarterback and their receiver in a rhythm.
- 15:51Speaker 1: And I think that's going to be really difficult. I
- 15:53Speaker 1: didn't even mention. By the way, Nuosu, another linebacker for
- 15:56Speaker 1: the Seahawks, he has seven sacks. All right, They're just
- 16:00Speaker 1: it's just how sound they are. They have six or
- 16:04Speaker 1: seven players, eight players maybe on their total out of
- 16:07Speaker 1: eleven on defense who can make life very difficult. In fact,
- 16:11Speaker 1: they had thirteen different players with at least one sack
- 16:16Speaker 1: this year. All right. That just shows you how balanced
- 16:19Speaker 1: they are. That will be the difficulty for the Patriots,
- 16:23Speaker 1: and the Patriots are inexperienced. That is why I believe
- 16:27Speaker 1: the Seahawks are favored and why I think that they
- 16:30Speaker 1: will probably win this game. I'm a little worried about
- 16:33Speaker 1: how Drake may has turned the ball over in the postseason.
- 16:38Speaker 1: He had to win against the Broncos with his legs.
- 16:41Speaker 1: He will still have to continue to use his legs
- 16:43Speaker 1: against this Seahawks defense. But I don't think the Seahawks
- 16:45Speaker 1: will allow him to run as much and plus the elements,
- 16:49Speaker 1: they won't be snowing. He won't have to run just
- 16:52Speaker 1: to run because there's nothing there, or because he can't
- 16:54Speaker 1: see his receivers on the field because the snow's comeing
- 16:57Speaker 1: in sideways because of the wind. You won't have to
- 16:59Speaker 1: worry about it. That not at all. I think maybe
- 17:04Speaker 1: we'll have opportunities to be able to see cleanly his
- 17:09Speaker 1: receivers and try to get the ball to his receivers.
- 17:12Speaker 1: But then how will his internal clock be against the
- 17:15Speaker 1: Seahawks defense that will push the pocket, pinch the pocket,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and get everywhere. That is my concern. Drake made his inexperience.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I know he's played well. I know he's running up
- 17:26Speaker 1: for MVP, but he's turned the ball over more so
- 17:30Speaker 1: than usual in the playoffs, and he's coming off a
- 17:33Speaker 1: game where it was a very wonky AFC Championship game.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Now I've said this before, very impressed with how the
- 17:40Speaker 1: Patriots have been able to win outside the margins, how
- 17:45Speaker 1: they've been able to win uncomfortably. All Right, they faced
- 17:49Speaker 1: really good defenses. They had to beat the Chargers, who
- 17:53Speaker 1: made it uncomfortable for about three quarters before the Patriots
- 17:56Speaker 1: pulled away. Chargers have a great defense. Okay, then they
- 17:59Speaker 1: had to play the Texans, who may have the best
- 18:02Speaker 1: defense in the NFL, made them uncomfortable, but they were
- 18:05Speaker 1: able to win, all right. And then of course you
- 18:08Speaker 1: go into Denver. Playing in Denver is one of the
- 18:11Speaker 1: toughest places to play, very very hard to win in
- 18:16Speaker 1: Denver in the playoffs. And then of course you got
- 18:18Speaker 1: the snowstorm and they win the game. I will be
- 18:21Speaker 1: the first person to admit that the Patriots have had
- 18:26Speaker 1: a tougher road to the super Bowl and have show
- 18:30Speaker 1: handled more adversity to get to the super Bowl, and
- 18:33Speaker 1: have showed, despite their inexperience with the quarterback, that they
- 18:40Speaker 1: can overcome those things. But now you're asking them to
- 18:43Speaker 1: do it for a fourth straight time against a team
- 18:47Speaker 1: that has played almost perfectly all year, that a team
- 18:51Speaker 1: that I believe has less flaws than the Broncos. They're
- 18:55Speaker 1: a better offensive team than the Broncos, way better offensive
- 18:59Speaker 1: team than the Texans. And by this, and we all
- 19:02Speaker 1: talked about the Chargers good, great defense, but had a
- 19:05Speaker 1: lot of offensive flaws, including injuries. Really a super Bowl
- 19:09Speaker 1: a quarterback whould never won a playoff game. So now
- 19:12Speaker 1: they're facing the Seahawks team though that I think, from
- 19:16Speaker 1: top to bottom, is better than any of the three
- 19:19Speaker 1: teams that they beat in the playoffs, and now you're
- 19:23Speaker 1: playing them not in their backyard, but in a stadium
- 19:27Speaker 1: in San Francisco that the Seahawks are very familiar with
- 19:29Speaker 1: playing in. They play in it twice a year. So
- 19:33Speaker 1: I just think that at some point you're run into
- 19:35Speaker 1: too many obstacles. If the Patriot and I'm not telling
- 19:39Speaker 1: you the Patriots can't win this game. If they do,
- 19:41Speaker 1: I think it'll be an unbelievable triumph for both Mike
- 19:47Speaker 1: Vrabel and Drake May, Josh McDaniels, the whole Patriots organization,
- 19:53Speaker 1: because honestly, I do think the odds are stacked against them.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I think the ability that the Seahawks have to move
- 20:06Speaker 1: around Jackson Smith and Jigba, who Kubiak has done an
- 20:10Speaker 1: unbelievable job with. I know I've said this on the
- 20:13Speaker 1: show before, but it's not like the Seahawks offense has
- 20:16Speaker 1: a bunch of guys that scare you. I mean, we
- 20:19Speaker 1: look at the Super Bowls we've been watching lately. You know,
- 20:22Speaker 1: last year, you get the Eagles and the Chiefs, and
- 20:25Speaker 1: you've got Mahomes and you've got Hurts, and you've got
- 20:28Speaker 1: sa Quon Barkley, and you've got a j. Brown and
- 20:30Speaker 1: DeVante Smith, Travis Kelcey, of course, Dallas Goddard. I mean,
- 20:38Speaker 1: the firepower just is sort of ridiculous. And you know,
- 20:43Speaker 1: then you go back to other Super Bowls, whether it
- 20:45Speaker 1: was with the forty nine Ers, they were in it,
- 20:47Speaker 1: and they were giving you McCaffrey and Kittle and Debo
- 20:51Speaker 1: right and Ayuk when he was healthy, and then they
- 20:54Speaker 1: were going up against the Chiefs, and the Chiefs had
- 20:56Speaker 1: all these weapons. And if it was the Bengals, they
- 20:58Speaker 1: had Burrow and Chase that year, and they had of
- 21:03Speaker 1: course Higgins right. I mean, there's just we're used to
- 21:05Speaker 1: seeing teams in the Super Bowl lately that just have
- 21:09Speaker 1: so much firepower. And then you look at the Seahawks
- 21:12Speaker 1: and you say, who scares you outside of Jackson Smith
- 21:16Speaker 1: and Jigba. Kenneth Walker is a good player. He's not
- 21:18Speaker 1: Christian McCaffrey. He's not Seguon Barkley, all right, Barner the
- 21:25Speaker 1: tight end good player, not Kelsey, not Godard. Okay, she
- 21:28Speaker 1: heat heat, nice deep threat nice deep threat. Not a
- 21:32Speaker 1: j Brown okay, not DeVante Smith, not Jamar Chase, not
- 21:40Speaker 1: even she Rice Okay. Just a good, good, solid deep
- 21:45Speaker 1: threat who hurts you more as a returner than he
- 21:49Speaker 1: has Cooper Cup had a fantastic NFC Championship game. But
- 21:55Speaker 1: this is not the guy who had the Triple Crown
- 21:57Speaker 1: a couple of years ago with the Rams. All right,
- 21:59Speaker 1: he is a role playing wide receiver who will help
- 22:03Speaker 1: you out on third down. Now, he is not a
- 22:06Speaker 1: guy you draw a circle around and say that's the
- 22:10Speaker 1: guy we can't let beat us. No, it's really just
- 22:13Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and Jigma and Amazingly, and this is why
- 22:16Speaker 1: I felt like Klint Kubiak probably should have been the
- 22:19Speaker 1: Assistant of the Year. Amazingly despite all that Smith and
- 22:25Speaker 1: Jig but has been amazing It was Offensive player of
- 22:27Speaker 1: the Year. And they get the ball to him, you know,
- 22:29Speaker 1: they start putting him up in the backfield, so he's
- 22:31Speaker 1: already a guy who plays inside outside slot, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: and then they start lining him up in the backfield
- 22:36Speaker 1: like a running back and they get the ball out
- 22:39Speaker 1: of there using motion. I mean, they've done an unbelievable
- 22:42Speaker 1: job taking this one player who can scare the life
- 22:45Speaker 1: out of you and still being able to get him
- 22:47Speaker 1: the ball. So how can New England win? I mentioned
- 22:51Speaker 1: this on the last show. This is going to be
- 22:53Speaker 1: a test of Mike Vrabel's ability to channel his inner
- 22:58Speaker 1: Bill Belichick. Belichick was known as the guy who can
- 23:04Speaker 1: take your best player out and then try to make
- 23:07Speaker 1: the rest of the guys beat you. That started with
- 23:10Speaker 1: Marshall Falk when they won the Super Bowl over the
- 23:14Speaker 1: Greatest Show on Turf Rams and Brady's second year, his
- 23:17Speaker 1: first Super Bowl, they were able to figure devise a
- 23:19Speaker 1: scheme that took Marshall Falk out of the game or
- 23:24Speaker 1: at least made him a whole lot less. I mean,
- 23:27Speaker 1: Marshall Fawk was maybe the best two way running back
- 23:30Speaker 1: in the league for a couple of years there. I mean,
- 23:33Speaker 1: he was unbelievable and the Patriots did an excellent job
- 23:39Speaker 1: as Bill Belichick was starting to make a name for
- 23:41Speaker 1: himself of taking him out of the game. And of course,
- 23:44Speaker 1: Brady made the few throws that they needed to win
- 23:48Speaker 1: to win the Super Bowl, and that sort of set
- 23:51Speaker 1: the legacy for both Brady but also for Bill Belichick
- 23:55Speaker 1: being able to take guys out of a game if
- 23:59Speaker 1: you're wondering far, I'll look it up. Here. Falk had
- 24:01Speaker 1: seventy six yards rushing and fifty four yards receiving. He
- 24:05Speaker 1: didn't score a touchdown in that Super Bowl, so yeah,
- 24:08Speaker 1: you can say he had, you know, over one hundred
- 24:11Speaker 1: and twenty yards. But this is a guy who had
- 24:13Speaker 1: an unbelievable career, was known for finding the end zone.
- 24:17Speaker 1: And you know, seventeen for seventy six it's not a
- 24:20Speaker 1: great rushing day. And you know, four for fifty four,
- 24:25Speaker 1: you'd have to go back and remember it, you know.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I mean, this is guy Marshall Falk who would catch seven,
- 24:29Speaker 1: eight nine passes in any single game. So now Kurt
- 24:33Speaker 1: Warner had a big game, but he also was intercepted twice.
- 24:38Speaker 1: All right, so do you look at the I'm looking
- 24:42Speaker 1: at the Isaac Bruce fifty six yards, Okay, Tory Holt
- 24:45Speaker 1: forty nine yards. That was Belichick's thing. He knew how
- 24:51Speaker 1: to design and that's why he's one of the greatest
- 24:52Speaker 1: defensive minds. And you know, it's not being in the
- 24:55Speaker 1: Super Bowl is kind of crazy. I mean, I'm sorry,
- 24:58Speaker 1: not being in the Hall of Fame first ballot, it's
- 25:00Speaker 1: kind of crazy. But That is what made Belichick who
- 25:04Speaker 1: he was. He knew how to take the best player
- 25:07Speaker 1: from the other team away from the game. All Right,
- 25:11Speaker 1: if you go back and look at their next Super Bowl,
- 25:13Speaker 1: they went over the Panthers. Steve Smith four catches for
- 25:16Speaker 1: eighty yards. Didn't go crazy, didn't go crazy, musing Muhammad
- 25:20Speaker 1: had a huge game, four for one forty but to
- 25:24Speaker 1: home was three. Remember that game. He came alive in
- 25:29Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. All right, the Home was sixteen of
- 25:31Speaker 1: thirty three completedly less than fifty percent of his passes. Now,
- 25:34Speaker 1: he wound up late getting the ball to Steve Smith,
- 25:37Speaker 1: getting the ball to Museum Muhammad. But the Panther that
- 25:41Speaker 1: was a fourteen to ten game, I believe. Going into
- 25:44Speaker 1: the fourth quarter, the Patriots are fourteen to ten. Then
- 25:46Speaker 1: they went twenty one to ten, so they were starting
- 25:48Speaker 1: to pull away. To Shan Foster gets a touchdown run
- 25:52Speaker 1: twenty one sixteen. It wasn't until at that point, deep
- 25:55Speaker 1: into the fourth quarter that Muhammad and Steve Smith were
- 25:59Speaker 1: really starting to do things. Smith had an earlier touchdown
- 26:01Speaker 1: in the game in the second quarter. But this has
- 26:04Speaker 1: been the Belichick mantra, take the other player's best take
- 26:10Speaker 1: the other team's best player out of the game. If
- 26:13Speaker 1: they can do that to Jackson, Smith and Jigma, I
- 26:16Speaker 1: can't see a scenario where Seattle can win the Super
- 26:19Speaker 1: Bowl if Smith and Jigba is held under sixty yards,
- 26:23Speaker 1: all right, that is to me the key for the Patriots.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Can they figure out a way to get enough bodies
- 26:32Speaker 1: on Smith and Jigba to close enough windows to follow
- 26:35Speaker 1: him around. You know, he's not the type of player
- 26:38Speaker 1: you can trail with Christian Gonzalez because he moves around
- 26:41Speaker 1: too much, all right, I don't, I don't. I don't
- 26:44Speaker 1: suspect now, maybe every time he lines up on the boundary,
- 26:49Speaker 1: you might see Christian Gonzalez on him on the boundary.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But know includ Kubiak, who will move Smith and Jigba
- 26:56Speaker 1: around to make sure that it doesn't become one on
- 27:00Speaker 1: one Smith and jig But Verus Gonzales for an entire game,
- 27:03Speaker 1: that would not be wise. I think cluding Kubiak is
- 27:06Speaker 1: too smart for that. And then I expect Smith and
- 27:11Speaker 1: jig but they will figure out different ways to get
- 27:13Speaker 1: in the ball. If the Patriots can stop that, I
- 27:15Speaker 1: believe their chance of winning goes way up. The second way,
- 27:18Speaker 1: I think the Patriots can win. Is getting Sam Donald
- 27:24Speaker 1: stuck in the pocket. Now. Donald's had a great year,
- 27:26Speaker 1: but one thing that's kind of gone overlooked, all right,
- 27:30Speaker 1: is that he has turned the ball over quite a bit.
- 27:34Speaker 1: The recency of Sam Donald is, man, he played so
- 27:38Speaker 1: well in the NFC Championship game. He played so well,
- 27:42Speaker 1: you know, against the Rams, and he played well against
- 27:48Speaker 1: who is that they play in the second round. It's
- 27:49Speaker 1: escaping me right now. But he has been playing really well.
- 27:53Speaker 1: The forty nine ers played well against the forty nine
- 27:55Speaker 1: ers team. That's the recency of everything right now. Is
- 27:59Speaker 1: that Sam has had four touchdowns and no interceptions in
- 28:05Speaker 1: the two playoff games that the Seahawks have played. But
- 28:08Speaker 1: if you go look for the year at Sam Donald's stats,
- 28:14Speaker 1: he had fourteen interceptions this year. That's more than last year.
- 28:17Speaker 1: He had twelve with the Vikings. He had fourteen this year.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And he fumbled quite a bit as well, lost a
- 28:25Speaker 1: lot of fumbles, all right. He had eleven fumbles. He
- 28:28Speaker 1: led the NFL in fumbles. So you get twenty five
- 28:32Speaker 1: turnovers in seventeen games, draveraging more than a turnover a game.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I heard Greg Closo breaking down Sam Donald on Media Row.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I think he was with our partners at ninety seven
- 28:47Speaker 1: three ESPN Mike gil It might have been with Kaplan
- 28:49Speaker 1: there and yeah, he was with Brian Hoyer. We have
- 28:52Speaker 1: that podcast that on Inside the Birds. What he was
- 28:55Speaker 1: saying is Sam Donald has played fantastically within the structure
- 28:58Speaker 1: of the offense this year. There's no doubt about it.
- 29:01Speaker 1: He and that Klin Kubiak offense, which again has similarities
- 29:05Speaker 1: to Kevin O'Connell's offense, have worked and clicked and they
- 29:08Speaker 1: drive the ball down the field off play action, maybe
- 29:11Speaker 1: better than anybody in the NFL. But Greg said, you
- 29:15Speaker 1: can still see that when Donald doesn't see it immediately
- 29:19Speaker 1: and he's in the pocket and things start to close
- 29:21Speaker 1: and he's not sure, everything gets fast for him. That
- 29:25Speaker 1: the feet get fast and the arms get fast. Not
- 29:27Speaker 1: only fast in a good way, I mean frenetic. You
- 29:30Speaker 1: can see that. You can make Sam Donald frenetic. And
- 29:35Speaker 1: if you can make him frenetic enough that he fumbles
- 29:38Speaker 1: the ball, you get a stripsack, or he throws an interception,
- 29:41Speaker 1: he rushes the throw. You've seen it. It's happened all
- 29:45Speaker 1: year long, just not the last two games. They've been
- 29:48Speaker 1: able to overcome it because they're so good all around
- 29:51Speaker 1: and defensively, and because himself Sam Darnald will make two
- 29:54Speaker 1: or three really explosive plays to compensate. But you're in
- 29:57Speaker 1: the super Bowl now and every possession will matter. Special
- 30:03Speaker 1: teams will play a role in this game because it
- 30:07Speaker 1: always does. It'll be either a field goal, it could
- 30:10Speaker 1: be a block pat it could be a big return.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I think in that regard it favors the Seahawks and Shaheed.
- 30:19Speaker 1: You know, Meyers is a good kicker. There's nothing wrong
- 30:22Speaker 1: I don't think with New England special teams. I think
- 30:24Speaker 1: they're in this game also because they have some very
- 30:26Speaker 1: good special teams players. They tackle well on special teams.
- 30:29Speaker 1: You know, Mike Rabel is going to have a team
- 30:32Speaker 1: that excels in that area. But Seattle's got the explosive return,
- 30:36Speaker 1: and actually the Patriots have Marcus Jones. He's pretty capable
- 30:40Speaker 1: of a good return too. In fact, on the gate,
- 30:43Speaker 1: I think just only again, it's the recency bias of
- 30:46Speaker 1: seeing Rashid Jaheed basically win games for the Seahawks since
- 30:50Speaker 1: they traded for him. On returns. All right, both of
- 30:53Speaker 1: these teams are capable of big explosive returns. This game,
- 30:57Speaker 1: I am letting you know now, will not go from
- 31:01Speaker 1: kickoff to final buzzer without a major special teams play.
- 31:06Speaker 1: And I'm not talking about some guy kicks a thirty
- 31:08Speaker 1: two yard field goal right before halftime and you say, hey,
- 31:11Speaker 1: special teams comes through. No, no, no, This game will
- 31:14Speaker 1: be decided by someone kicking a very long field goal
- 31:18Speaker 1: or having a pat or a field goal blocked, or
- 31:22Speaker 1: a big return that either scores a touchdown or sets
- 31:25Speaker 1: up a touchdown because it gives a team great field position.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Book it mark my words. It happens nearly every Super Bowl.
- 31:35Speaker 1: And this is why the Rams, by the way, aren't
- 31:38Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl because of their special teams. Because
- 31:41Speaker 1: they got kick they had kicks blocked all year, They
- 31:44Speaker 1: gave up a big return in a game. They fired
- 31:47Speaker 1: their special teams coordinator in the middle of the year.
- 31:49Speaker 1: It didn't get any better for Sean McVay after that.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I firmly believe the muff punt that they had against
- 31:58Speaker 1: Seattle that led to the touchdown was the biggest reason
- 32:01Speaker 1: of all the reasons that the Rams didn't beat the
- 32:03Speaker 1: Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. Special teams will matter,
- 32:09Speaker 1: and the beauty for both of these teams is they're
- 32:12Speaker 1: both pretty good on special teams. But that doesn't mean
- 32:15Speaker 1: one team can't make the explosive that matters over the
- 32:19Speaker 1: other and whoever does Again, possessions in the Super Bowl
- 32:25Speaker 1: are enormous, especially in these close games. So if this
- 32:29Speaker 1: game is gonna be close, I could be all right.
- 32:33Speaker 1: Special teams will play a huge factor, and turnovers, bringing
- 32:37Speaker 1: it back to Donald, will play a huge factor. Donald
- 32:43Speaker 1: and May. Donald has been a turnover machine during the
- 32:46Speaker 1: regular season. May has turned the ball over in the postseason.
- 32:50Speaker 1: All Right, one of those has got to give in
- 32:53Speaker 1: this game, and whoever gives is gonna regret it, unfortunately
- 33:01Speaker 1: for that person. Hero and Goat. That's the way it
- 33:03Speaker 1: is with the Super Bowl, all right. I've broken down
- 33:07Speaker 1: the game now twice two straight weeks. Those are to
- 33:09Speaker 1: think the biggest sticking points for both teams. I'm gonna
- 33:13Speaker 1: give my prediction now, so this will be my last
- 33:15Speaker 1: one of the year. I went one and one last week.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I won on the Broncos, getting three and a half
- 33:20Speaker 1: over the Patriots. They covered, they lost, but they covered,
- 33:24Speaker 1: and I lost on the Rams getting two and a
- 33:28Speaker 1: half over, the Seahawks lost by four. I think it
- 33:30Speaker 1: was in the end. So this game, as I mentioned,
- 33:36Speaker 1: Seahawks are five point favorites. I'm gonna take the Seahawks.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I think they're gonna win this game by between ten
- 33:41Speaker 1: and thirteen points. It doesn't mean it's gonna be a blowout.
- 33:45Speaker 1: I can see this being sort of, you know, something
- 33:48Speaker 1: like sixteen thirteen Seahawks in the fourth quarter late and
- 33:51Speaker 1: then you know, they get a touchdown and it becomes
- 33:55Speaker 1: twenty three thirteen. Okay, get a field goal, it's nineteen
- 33:59Speaker 1: thirteen something like that. But I think they'll cover. I
- 34:02Speaker 1: think they'll win by ten. Like I said, in that
- 34:05Speaker 1: ten to thirteen range. If there's a blowout, I think
- 34:10Speaker 1: it'll be the Seahawks blowing out the Patriots. I cannot
- 34:13Speaker 1: see a scenario where the Patriots blow out the Seahawks
- 34:16Speaker 1: unless Darnold has like five turnovers. I don't see that happening.
- 34:20Speaker 1: I don't think it's just the way they play ball
- 34:23Speaker 1: doesn't lend itself to that. I didn't really talk about
- 34:25Speaker 1: the Patriots defense, but I will say I think they've
- 34:27Speaker 1: been very, very improved throughout the play. It's not that
- 34:30Speaker 1: they were improved. They had some injuries throughout the year.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Milton Williams was hurt for a time. I think they
- 34:34Speaker 1: had some secondary issues. But Gonzalez is a really good corner.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Milton Williams has been fantastic in the postseason. He battled
- 34:42Speaker 1: an ankle injury throughout the year. Barmore is good. So
- 34:46Speaker 1: when you get Christian Barmore and Milton Williams on the
- 34:50Speaker 1: field at the same time, it's really good. Alleviates you know,
- 34:55Speaker 1: it opens things up for the edge rushers. You know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: kay Leveon Chase's had a great rushy year. I mean,
- 35:01Speaker 1: I don't think there are a fearsome team around the edges,
- 35:03Speaker 1: but they're pretty good. But when you got the interior
- 35:06Speaker 1: of mill Williams and Barmore, you're pretty good. They're linebacker,
- 35:10Speaker 1: you know, Elis Christianellis used to be with the Eagles
- 35:13Speaker 1: has really come on for them as a linebacker. So
- 35:17Speaker 1: they're solid top to bottom. They're not as good as
- 35:18Speaker 1: the Seahawks defensively, but they're pretty good and so that
- 35:21Speaker 1: should help them stay in this game. I hope it's
- 35:24Speaker 1: an exciting Super Bowl. It hasn't had much pomp and
- 35:27Speaker 1: circumstance leading up, but I hope it's an exciting one.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I am picking the Seahawks covering the five points.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 38:49Speaker 1: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 38:52Speaker 1: one and up. Before I leave, just want to talk,
- 38:56Speaker 1: I said, I would talk about the Eagles and the
- 39:00Speaker 1: whole Staltland situation. It's unfortunate the way it's happened. You know,
- 39:07Speaker 1: Adam talked about this with the Patreon members and we'll
- 39:09Speaker 1: talk about it more on inside the Birds going forward
- 39:11Speaker 1: before we move on. Because it's what's done is done.
- 39:14Speaker 1: You know, there there are obviously things that weren't right
- 39:17Speaker 1: between on the offensive coaching staff throughout the year. The
- 39:22Speaker 1: run game had a lot to do with it. Staltland's
- 39:23Speaker 1: in charge of it. You know, you've read, it's been
- 39:26Speaker 1: out there. There were some frustrations on both sides, and
- 39:29Speaker 1: the reality is it was Staltland's decision, as Adam has reported,
- 39:34Speaker 1: it was absolutely Steutlin's decision to not coach the offensive line,
- 39:40Speaker 1: and maybe he felt forced into that decision. It doesn't
- 39:44Speaker 1: matter at this point. I think what matters is this
- 39:47Speaker 1: what you have to understand in the NFL. Okay, everybody's
- 39:51Speaker 1: looking for someone to blame, and the Eagles are taking
- 39:53Speaker 1: a ton of blame. Some people are blaming Stalin because
- 39:56Speaker 1: they were upset with how the run game was last year.
- 39:58Speaker 1: The Eagles are being called dysfunctional, they recalled a mess.
- 40:02Speaker 1: There's certainly reasons to question the Eagles throughout their offseason
- 40:07Speaker 1: because how they look next year might be completely different.
- 40:11Speaker 1: And I don't think anybody expected that. And I don't
- 40:14Speaker 1: think anybody is upset that they wanted to push the
- 40:18Speaker 1: reset button on offense. Everybody knew they needed to push
- 40:22Speaker 1: the reset button on offense. I just think that most
- 40:26Speaker 1: people expected after the year ended that it would be
- 40:30Speaker 1: a reset behind someone who has proven that they can reset.
- 40:35Speaker 1: You know, a proven play caller who's going to hire
- 40:37Speaker 1: experienced coaches. Okay, it's not the case. You're getting a
- 40:41Speaker 1: whole young coaching staff an entirely new scheme, and that
- 40:44Speaker 1: opens up question marks. I get that. I totally completely
- 40:48Speaker 1: understand that, but I don't I don't think. I think
- 40:52Speaker 1: there's too much of a history in this league of
- 40:55Speaker 1: guys who have excelled in a spot. Now it's usually
- 40:59Speaker 1: no an offensive line cop Stotland's very much a rare.
- 41:02Speaker 1: I mean, my colleague at Philly Voice, Nick Tricombe wrote
- 41:05Speaker 1: a great column and you should all read it about
- 41:09Speaker 1: how rare it is for a town to know it's
- 41:12Speaker 1: offensive line coach the way Philadelphia knows Jeff Staltlin revers
- 41:16Speaker 1: Jeff Staltlin connects with Jeff Staltlin, and vice versa. That
- 41:21Speaker 1: is absolutely rare for a position, any position coach, quarterback, coach,
- 41:26Speaker 1: wide receivers coach, offensive line coach. But that just just
- 41:29Speaker 1: shows you how successful, how legendary, how connective Jeff Staltlin was,
- 41:37Speaker 1: not only with the players but the city. How vital
- 41:40Speaker 1: the Eagles offensive line has been to the success of
- 41:44Speaker 1: the Eagles to be able to win two Super Bowls
- 41:47Speaker 1: and go to three with a you know a lot
- 41:50Speaker 1: of same linemen, crossover linemen like Kelsey and you know
- 41:54Speaker 1: Lane Johnson, Jordan Mylotta, but you know, different quarterbacks in
- 41:59Speaker 1: the three Super Bowls. Obvious Foles WinCE in one and
- 42:02Speaker 1: then hurts the other two in different coaching staffs. All right,
- 42:05Speaker 1: But the one thing that has been the constant has
- 42:08Speaker 1: been the play, the elite play of the offensive line
- 42:11Speaker 1: and Jeff Stealtlin as the developer of the offensive lineman.
- 42:14Speaker 1: So it is very rare that you see this, But
- 42:18Speaker 1: what is not rare in the NFL is to see
- 42:22Speaker 1: what you might describe as an ugly divorce between a
- 42:26Speaker 1: successful franchise and its pillars. All Right, it did not
- 42:32Speaker 1: we end well in New England for Bill Belichick, Robert
- 42:37Speaker 1: Craft and Tom Brady. I guarantee you Craft never wanted
- 42:41Speaker 1: to see Brady leave, especially go to Tampa and when
- 42:44Speaker 1: another ring there. We already know Craft and Belichick have not,
- 42:51Speaker 1: you know, exactly been on each other's a holiday card list. Okay,
- 42:55Speaker 1: time will heal wounds. But it didn't end well. And
- 42:58Speaker 1: it's unfortunate because they wont so much together for so
- 43:01Speaker 1: long and in such a dominant way. But what happens
- 43:04Speaker 1: is is Ego Belichick thought his way, the Patriot way,
- 43:10Speaker 1: was gonna last forever, even beyond Brady. He was wrong. Okay,
- 43:14Speaker 1: Craft again never wanted a C Brady go, put all
- 43:18Speaker 1: his trust in Belichick, and it haunted him in the end.
- 43:23Speaker 1: All Right, those guys are not on great terms, and
- 43:27Speaker 1: eventually I think they will be. But it didn't end
- 43:31Speaker 1: well because you have so many people who have succeeded
- 43:34Speaker 1: their way doing it and believe it's their way. All right,
- 43:39Speaker 1: It didn't end well in Dallas for Tom Landry when
- 43:42Speaker 1: Jerry Jones took over, and that's basically Jerry Jones's fault.
- 43:45Speaker 1: And by the way, didn't end well between Jimmy Johnson
- 43:49Speaker 1: and Jerry Jones. And that's also Jerry Jones's fault. In
- 43:52Speaker 1: this situation, you can definitely say it's the fault of
- 43:56Speaker 1: a guy who came in and just acted like he
- 43:58Speaker 1: was better than everybody else in Jerry Johnssen, Jorge Jones.
- 44:02Speaker 1: How about the Packers. I mean, Brett Farv won a
- 44:05Speaker 1: Super Bowl with the Packers, who was there for over
- 44:07Speaker 1: a decade. It was an unbelievable story the way they
- 44:12Speaker 1: found him in a trade with Atlanta and developed him
- 44:14Speaker 1: under Mike Holmgren. All Right, the Packers were truly a
- 44:18Speaker 1: great franchise for a long time under Farv. That ended ugly.
- 44:22Speaker 1: He went to their division rivals, to the Vikings, the
- 44:26Speaker 1: Packers who had drafted Aaron Rodgers at the time, and
- 44:30Speaker 1: there was friction between those guys. Right, The Packers, I believe,
- 44:33Speaker 1: if I haven recall correctly, had to file some tampering
- 44:35Speaker 1: charges against the Vikings. When it happened and went down,
- 44:39Speaker 1: it was not ugly. It was not good because FARV
- 44:43Speaker 1: was so successful and Holmgren and the Packers were so successful,
- 44:48Speaker 1: and FARV was getting older and they had Aaron Rodgers
- 44:51Speaker 1: on the come up, and you're just not going to
- 44:53Speaker 1: get everybody to be on the same page with that. Okay,
- 44:57Speaker 1: some people want to move on, some people want to
- 44:58Speaker 1: stay some you know, you get different philosophies. And so
- 45:02Speaker 1: it didn't end well. And then eighteen years after that,
- 45:06Speaker 1: it did not end well with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.
- 45:10Speaker 1: I mean, that was a cold ending. You know, I'm
- 45:12Speaker 1: sure time will heal wounds, and it's been talked about.
- 45:15Speaker 1: I'm sure it will, it always does, but it didn't well.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Aaron didn't want to be forced out and leave and
- 45:22Speaker 1: watch the team go on to Jordan Love. But that's
- 45:24Speaker 1: what happened. And you know, you remember that last year
- 45:27Speaker 1: there were some press conferences where Aaron basically let it
- 45:31Speaker 1: known he was not feeling happy about things with the
- 45:34Speaker 1: Packers' management. So you could see that did not end
- 45:38Speaker 1: well either. It didn't end I wouldn't say it ended
- 45:41Speaker 1: disastery disastrously for Andy Reid and the Eagles, because when
- 45:47Speaker 1: Jeffrey Lurie fired Andy. They hugged, you know, they both
- 45:52Speaker 1: felt it was time. It was a mutual thing. But
- 45:56Speaker 1: what led to it was a total, abject, outright disaster.
- 46:02Speaker 1: You know, Andy started to lose power there at the
- 46:05Speaker 1: end over the last two years, started to have things
- 46:08Speaker 1: forced on him, you know, recommendations, strong ones from up
- 46:13Speaker 1: top to hire certain coaches. We know that Washburn was
- 46:16Speaker 1: hired before defensive coordinator. That cost Andy the opportunity to
- 46:20Speaker 1: hire a really good defensive coordinator because they didn't want
- 46:23Speaker 1: to come and already have to run a scheme run
- 46:26Speaker 1: by Jim Washburn. So then he had the name one
- 46:28Speaker 1: Castillo is defensive coordinator. Then Wan and Washburn. You know,
- 46:34Speaker 1: Wan was not treated well by Washburn. It got ugly
- 46:37Speaker 1: at the end. It got really ugly, got ugly in
- 46:41Speaker 1: the front office many times with Howie and some of
- 46:44Speaker 1: you know on his way up and Joe Banner. I mean,
- 46:46Speaker 1: the whole twenty ten to twelve Eagles ugly and then
- 46:51Speaker 1: the Chip Kelly Eer ugly as well. But I wanted
- 46:54Speaker 1: to keep this to Andy Reid Eagles because we're discussing
- 46:56Speaker 1: what it's like when you've had so much success in
- 46:58Speaker 1: one place and at the end the pressure to win,
- 47:03Speaker 1: combined with the ego, causes these situations. By the way,
- 47:07Speaker 1: if you have some time, I don't want to go
- 47:08Speaker 1: through every situation. But Tom Claughlin two super Bowls and
- 47:11Speaker 1: twelve years with the Giants didn't end well. Didn't then well,
- 47:15Speaker 1: had a couple losing seasons. They lost faith in him.
- 47:17Speaker 1: The locker room still liked Tom, still think he could
- 47:20Speaker 1: do it. Tom was basically saying some other changes were needed.
- 47:22Speaker 1: They forced him out. They haven't been the same since
- 47:25Speaker 1: it was like a mutual part It wasn't. Tom did
- 47:27Speaker 1: not leave on good terms with the Giants. Joe Montana
- 47:30Speaker 1: did not leave. He won four Super Bowls with the
- 47:33Speaker 1: forty nine ers. All right, it did not end well there.
- 47:36Speaker 1: They were ready. He was getting hurt later in his career.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Ninety three, they had Steve Young and they were ready
- 47:43Speaker 1: to go forward with Steve Young. Montana didn't like it,
- 47:46Speaker 1: didn't appreciate it. Again, he had won four Super Bowls success,
- 47:50Speaker 1: doing it his way, organization seeing it another way, and
- 47:54Speaker 1: it didn't end well. Tom sure time as heal wounds,
- 47:56Speaker 1: I would imagine Joe Montana and the Niners are good
- 47:58Speaker 1: now because years later you look back and you remember
- 48:01Speaker 1: the good times. But you know, I don't want to
- 48:04Speaker 1: say it was destined for Stoutland to end this way
- 48:08Speaker 1: with the Eagles. It's not. I mean, there have been,
- 48:10Speaker 1: you know, good partings, and I don't think Mike Tomlin
- 48:14Speaker 1: and the Steelers of any acrimony. You know, it sounded
- 48:16Speaker 1: like with Harball getting fired in Baltimore. He's expressed nothing
- 48:20Speaker 1: but love for Bashadi, the owner and the organization. Okay,
- 48:25Speaker 1: I'm not saying every single situation has to but when
- 48:28Speaker 1: you have strong personalities, Nick's a strong personality, Jeff is
- 48:33Speaker 1: a strong personality. Stout all right, the owner's got a
- 48:36Speaker 1: strong personality. When you have strong personalities who are all
- 48:39Speaker 1: under pressure to win and things aren't going well, and
- 48:43Speaker 1: they were not going well, all right, and you got
- 48:48Speaker 1: two factions, you don't see eye to eye on how
- 48:50Speaker 1: to fix it, and things get you know, you're you're
- 48:54Speaker 1: the pressure to win. It is the pressure to win.
- 48:57Speaker 1: I'm sure Stoutland felt like he knew that most coaches,
- 49:01Speaker 1: by nature are when things are going bad, you don't
- 49:03Speaker 1: change things up. You've doubled down. Sometimes that hurts coaches,
- 49:07Speaker 1: all right, because it means they can't adjust all right.
- 49:09Speaker 1: Sometimes It helps coaches because it means that their process
- 49:13Speaker 1: is right. But you go through a little bit adversity.
- 49:16Speaker 1: If you start to change your process, then you lose
- 49:18Speaker 1: who you are as a coach. Okay, Stalin had won
- 49:22Speaker 1: doing it his way for a long long time. Sirianni
- 49:25Speaker 1: has been a winner since he became the Eagles head coach.
- 49:29Speaker 1: All Right, I'm not saying it was destined to be
- 49:32Speaker 1: this way. I'm telling you I'm not surprised that it
- 49:35Speaker 1: ended this way because it's tough ego, the pressure to win,
- 49:39Speaker 1: the pressure to rescue at an offense that was just
- 49:43Speaker 1: absolutely dying over years. All Right, something had to be
- 49:47Speaker 1: done and somebody's feelings are going to get hurt. That's
- 49:50Speaker 1: how it goes. That's how it was for Aaron Rodgers,
- 49:54Speaker 1: That's how it was for Farv So what was for Montana,
- 49:56Speaker 1: how it was for Brady Belichicka, all these people involved.
- 50:00Speaker 1: I believe down the road there will be harmony again
- 50:05Speaker 1: between Stellin and the Eagles. Can't say that for sure.
- 50:07Speaker 1: I'm sure it will be, but I mean I imagine that
- 50:10Speaker 1: it will be, But I'm not surprised at it end
- 50:13Speaker 1: that way. And obviously you can't be a hypocrite about
- 50:17Speaker 1: the Eagles. You cannot say that everything about their offense
- 50:21Speaker 1: needed to change from ground up and then criticize the
- 50:27Speaker 1: Eagles for then going about and making all these changes.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Maybe the way it happened in the middle of the
- 50:34Speaker 1: season was messy. Maybe it reminds you of the messiness
- 50:37Speaker 1: from Sean Desai and Matt Patricia. And that was Sirianni's
- 50:41Speaker 1: fault one hundred percent. When I say it's his fault,
- 50:43Speaker 1: because he's the head coach and you know he's allowing.
- 50:47Speaker 1: You know, the whole hiring of these two guys from
- 50:50Speaker 1: different schemes to preside over a defense was flawed from
- 50:53Speaker 1: the start. It was we said it at the time,
- 50:56Speaker 1: same thing in twenty twenty, not Sirianni. But this is
- 51:00Speaker 1: more Howie's fault. When you have Doug Peterson and Doug's
- 51:03Speaker 1: fault two right, and the offense is decaying and he's
- 51:07Speaker 1: loyal to Press Taylor and then all of a sudden
- 51:09Speaker 1: he gets some coaches forced on him. Scangerello's in here,
- 51:13Speaker 1: Marty Morning legs back, Andrew Brinder's back, and you get
- 51:15Speaker 1: too many cooks in the kitchen, and that that that
- 51:17Speaker 1: that it was terrible for the Eagles, and we could
- 51:21Speaker 1: have predicted it. We did. We said it on inside
- 51:23Speaker 1: the Birds that this this feels like too many cooks,
- 51:26Speaker 1: too many different backgrounds, might not work, probably won't work,
- 51:29Speaker 1: could be disastrous, and it was. But the organization was
- 51:32Speaker 1: under pressure to win. They have won the Super Bowl.
- 51:34Speaker 1: They couldn't get back the last two years despite making
- 51:37Speaker 1: the playoffs. Things were, things were decaying and they needed
- 51:40Speaker 1: a life preserver. And that's when you see the panic
- 51:43Speaker 1: set in. Probably happened this past year or two with
- 51:46Speaker 1: the run game. All Right, it's over now, the Eagles
- 51:49Speaker 1: are starting over. In the long term, we're gonna find
- 51:52Speaker 1: out if everything's great, if this offense hits the ground running,
- 51:57Speaker 1: or if the changes weren't good enough. But that's for
- 52:02Speaker 1: time to tell, all right. So that was just my
- 52:06Speaker 1: feeling on the situation. It's unfortunate that it came down
- 52:09Speaker 1: the way it did, but it is certainly not the
- 52:11Speaker 1: first and won't be the last. If you want to
- 52:14Speaker 1: call it ugly divorce, I don't call it that. We'll
- 52:17Speaker 1: see what happens this year with Stout when he's still
- 52:19Speaker 1: under contract. It could still be with the team in
- 52:21Speaker 1: some capacity. We'll see, But I don't call it an
- 52:24Speaker 1: ugly divorce. Maybe an ugly ending, for sure. I mean,
- 52:28Speaker 1: I know a lot of people are making a deal
- 52:30Speaker 1: about how he thanked the Philadelphia fan in his video
- 52:33Speaker 1: and didn't say anything about the organization. Hey again, part
- 52:38Speaker 1: of this is just how it works in the NFL.
- 52:41Speaker 1: And sometime ten, five, ten, fifteen years down the road,
- 52:45Speaker 1: everybody will look back on the Stoutland and Eagle partnership
- 52:50Speaker 1: for thirteen years as nothing but a beautiful, harmonious, great thing.
- 52:54Speaker 1: And I'm sure the Eagles there are anything. They've been
- 52:56Speaker 1: putting out all sorts of great posts on social media
- 52:58Speaker 1: about stout and I think stout Will will eventually come
- 53:01Speaker 1: around to it too, you know, he probably. I don't
- 53:03Speaker 1: know if they put any coaches in the Hall of
- 53:06Speaker 1: Fame or Eagles Hall of Fame, I have to go
- 53:08Speaker 1: go check, but you know they will honor Jeff Stoutlin
- 53:11Speaker 1: in Philadelphia for sure, down the road. All right, everybody,
- 53:15Speaker 1: enjoy your Super Bowl, have fun at your parties, enjoy
- 53:18Speaker 1: the game. Try not to get distracted. I hate watching
- 53:22Speaker 1: the Super Bowl that I can't focus in on the game.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I really, you know, all the pomp and circumstance and
- 53:28Speaker 1: everything like that. They're going to Super Bowl parties and
- 53:31Speaker 1: I really want to pay attention to this game. I'm
- 53:33Speaker 1: really excited about the strategical matchups if you couldn't tell
- 53:36Speaker 1: by how I was breaking it down. And I really
- 53:38Speaker 1: hope it's a great game and I hope everybody gets
- 53:41Speaker 1: a chance to enjoy it. Oh and one last thing,
- 53:43Speaker 1: even though this is the last NFL preview show of
- 53:49Speaker 1: this season, I think I might keep this up throughout
- 53:52Speaker 1: the offseason, just giving you guys my thoughts on what's
- 53:56Speaker 1: happening around the NFL. Thoughts on you know, whether it's
- 54:00Speaker 1: team change, coaching change, free agency draft, just doing things
- 54:05Speaker 1: like that. So I've gotten good feedback. People seem to
- 54:07Speaker 1: like the show and appreciate the insight, and so I'm
- 54:10Speaker 1: gonna keep doing it because I like to do it.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Have a great football Sunday. I am I allowed to say,
- 54:16Speaker 1: I guess I'm not allowed to say the words either,
- 54:17Speaker 1: So enjoy the big game on Sunday. Everybody. Catch on
- 54:21Speaker 1: the next.
