- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:06Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Bars, Bizarre and Blazarn. Hello, everybody nailed it,
- 0:11Speaker 1: joined us always. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bar
- 0:19Speaker 1: Those first five really four weeks, weeks three to six,
- 0:23Speaker 1: because you you're not gonna have your normal routine going
- 0:25Speaker 1: into that Steelers game, You're coming off a Wednesday game.
- 0:27Speaker 2: It is gonna be so important for them to find
- 0:29Speaker 2: their rhythm, find their routine, build their Montreal because there
- 0:32Speaker 2: is no routine. Once that ends, that's it. It's out
- 0:34Speaker 2: the doors and that's where you lean on to go back.
- 0:37Speaker 1: And we talked about so much.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Mike Gravel was hired to the program right knowing, here's
- 0:43Speaker 2: here's how we go about recovery. Here's how we go
- 0:45Speaker 2: about training, Here's how we go about practice, Here's how
- 0:47Speaker 2: we go about game planning.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Here's how we go about this and that. Because it's
- 0:49Speaker 1: not gonna be you're not gonna.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Be able to do all right Monday, We're gonna, you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: do recap and recovery. Tuesday's a full recovery day, coaching
- 0:56Speaker 2: and game plan Wednesday, were gonna come in and get
- 0:58Speaker 2: most of it.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Installed Thursday is gonna be this, He's going to be No,
- 1:01Speaker 1: there is none of that, you KNOWX. That was a
- 1:09Speaker 1: point that Mike Rabel brought up today in his press
- 1:12Speaker 1: conference about all the different ebbs and flows of this
- 1:15Speaker 1: upcoming schedule. Busy, busy day today, guys, busy day, yes,
- 1:20Speaker 1: head coach Mike Rabel talking before practice hour and thirty
- 1:25Speaker 1: five forty minutes of real practice and they did some
- 1:28Speaker 1: conditioning and walk through stuff at the end. Drake May
- 1:31Speaker 1: at the podium after practice. Eventful day for the middle
- 1:36Speaker 1: of the spring, May twenty seventh or whatever it is.
- 1:39Speaker 1: So we're going to talk all about it here on
- 1:41Speaker 1: cats showing to you for the next couple of hours.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We're gonna recap everything that Alex and I just saw
- 1:47Speaker 1: at Patriots OTA's from start to finish, and I'm excited.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I'm excited to actually talk about some real, tangible football
- 1:56Speaker 1: that isn't hypothetical, that isn't you know, six months of
- 2:01Speaker 1: talking about the offseason that now we actually get something
- 2:04Speaker 1: real to sink our teeth into. With that being said,
- 2:08Speaker 1: I don't want to come on here today and I've
- 2:10Speaker 1: learned my lesson from years past. Alice I don't want
- 2:13Speaker 1: to come on here today and overrate what we just
- 2:17Speaker 1: saw and get too crazy about what we just saw.
- 2:20Speaker 1: You know, Drake may through an interception in practice. Some
- 2:25Speaker 1: people have taken that and run with it as a
- 2:27Speaker 1: negative about Kyle Williams and my mentions already. I don't
- 2:30Speaker 1: want to do that. I think the most important things
- 2:33Speaker 1: come out of a practice like this are twofold who
- 2:37Speaker 1: was at practice and who was participating, which is a
- 2:40Speaker 1: long list of different things that went on, and we'll
- 2:43Speaker 1: talk about that, and then where everybody was playing, where
- 2:48Speaker 1: everybody was slotted in, what positions they were playing, that
- 2:51Speaker 1: sort of thing. Less about performance, more about process of
- 2:57Speaker 1: what's going on out there on the practice field. So
- 3:00Speaker 1: that is a football I know that there's some stuff
- 3:03Speaker 1: that people are going to talk about with Mike Rabel
- 3:06Speaker 1: and what's going on off the field and his demeanor
- 3:08Speaker 1: and his comments on that. We're going to stick to
- 3:11Speaker 1: football here on this show. But along those lines, attendance
- 3:17Speaker 1: the one big story. And I hate that this is
- 3:20Speaker 1: what we're talking about, but this is this is the
- 3:23Speaker 1: story coming out of this practice right now. Alex was
- 3:26Speaker 1: that Christian Gonzales was not there right, not present, now
- 3:31Speaker 1: you laid out really well last week, how these things
- 3:35Speaker 1: aren't linear. They had their first OTA yesterday, we were
- 3:39Speaker 1: not there. So was Christian Gonzales in the house yesterday
- 3:42Speaker 1: and he wasn't there today? Will he be there tomorrow?
- 3:45Speaker 1: Will he be there? And when we get the practice
- 3:47Speaker 1: next week on Tuesday, we'll have another open OTA to
- 3:50Speaker 1: the media. Will he be there Tuesday? You know, these
- 3:53Speaker 1: things can change rapidly and we don't have all the information.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Mike Rabel was asked about it. He did say, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: the list of absences were accurate that he gave us,
- 4:03Speaker 1: or were in any other surprises or any unknown absences.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I'll read that list here in a second. But he
- 4:09Speaker 1: did say that he's been in contact with Christian Zales
- 4:13Speaker 1: this offseason and they have, you know, a good understanding.
- 4:16Speaker 1: They have good communication between him and the team. The
- 4:19Speaker 1: other thing I would just add with the Christian Zales
- 4:22Speaker 1: thing is that he has been here for other things.
- 4:25Speaker 1: You know, like we've photographed him during the first couple
- 4:29Speaker 1: phases of the off season. He's been on you know,
- 4:32Speaker 1: pictures of him on Patriots dot com. He was in
- 4:34Speaker 1: our schedule release video, so he was there for that.
- 4:37Speaker 1: So This isn't, like, you know, just to call it
- 4:40Speaker 1: what it is. This isn't the Kashan Boody situation where
- 4:43Speaker 1: Booty hasn't been here right like that's been reported. Mike
- 4:46Speaker 1: g Reese has reported that he wasn't there today. So
- 4:49Speaker 1: here's the list of absences, and then we can go
- 4:51Speaker 1: over just some of the takeaways. Christian Zalees, Carlton Davis,
- 4:56Speaker 1: Kashan Boody, Matt Collins, Harold Landry gave so say, Kyle Dixon,
- 5:02Speaker 1: Kyle Dixon, Sorry, that was the last one. So those
- 5:05Speaker 1: guys were not present. Then we also saw that Elijah
- 5:10Speaker 1: ra Tucker, who's coming off the torn triceps last year,
- 5:13Speaker 1: maybe a little bit limited in practice, wasn't full participant,
- 5:16Speaker 1: wasn't a full go in team drills. But just right, ot,
- 5:20Speaker 1: let's get right into it, because I don't really have
- 5:22Speaker 1: much else to add in terms of a runway here.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Just what your takeaways from Christian Zales not being out there?
- 5:29Speaker 1: Like I said, Rabel Men talked about it a little bit.
- 5:32Speaker 1: He was asked directly if it was contract related. He
- 5:34Speaker 1: kind of thought went around that a little bit. Well,
- 5:37Speaker 1: what's your takeaway?
- 5:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I was wondering just because, as you mentioned, like
- 5:40Speaker 2: he's been around. So I was wondering if he would
- 5:43Speaker 2: do that thing where we see guys show up and
- 5:46Speaker 2: they're in a T shirt and shorts and they don't participate,
- 5:48Speaker 2: but they're here so they can say they're here. And
- 5:50Speaker 2: you know, once we get to mini camp maybe it
- 5:51Speaker 2: changes to that. But he wouldn't be the first like
- 5:55Speaker 2: this is what happens. Guys would do a big contract,
- 5:57Speaker 2: it's not settled and so they don't show up to practice.
- 6:01Speaker 1: They don't have to show up to Yeah. I mean,
- 6:03Speaker 1: here's a veteran player at this point in his career.
- 6:06Speaker 1: He is going into year four. We see these with
- 6:08Speaker 1: other veterans all the time. They can be in and
- 6:10Speaker 1: out this time of year. You know, some practices they're here.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Some practices they're not here. They got other things. They
- 6:15Speaker 1: got other obligations, not just vacations. Like you know, these
- 6:18Speaker 1: guys are brands, so they have other things going on.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Here was the exact quote on the follow up question
- 6:25Speaker 1: said this, Yeah.
- 6:26Speaker 2: He's playing in Drake Made's charity softball game on Sunday.
- 6:29Speaker 2: He is, so we know he if he's not in
- 6:31Speaker 2: the area right now, like he's in the area around
- 6:33Speaker 2: this time.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Yeah, so he's around the team. Yeah, this is not
- 6:37Speaker 1: We're not in any situation yet where it's like a
- 6:40Speaker 1: true holdout that he's away from the facility and not
- 6:43Speaker 1: reporting and all that kind of stuff. So here was
- 6:46Speaker 1: the follow up question to Mike Rabel when Rabel rattled
- 6:50Speaker 1: off attendance, was, you know, obviously the obvious question, which
- 6:54Speaker 1: is Christian goan Zalez's you know, extension eligible. How much
- 6:57Speaker 1: of his spring participation has been impacted by that dynamic
- 7:02Speaker 1: of the contract, And Rabel said, those are personal choices
- 7:05Speaker 1: for the players. I would say that I value the
- 7:08Speaker 1: communications they've had personally. I know that our defensive coaches
- 7:11Speaker 1: have had conversations with Christian. So that's where we're at
- 7:15Speaker 1: with the Christian Gonzales thing. He was not there today,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and they were up front. You know, he told us
- 7:21Speaker 1: before practice that he wasn't going to be there, Rabel did. So,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I'm not ready again, like I said about the actual
- 7:31Speaker 1: performance of one practice in May, I'm not ready to
- 7:35Speaker 1: go crazy about the fact that he wasn't there. But
- 7:37Speaker 1: that's notable. The other guys that weren't there, Kayshan Boody
- 7:42Speaker 1: another one that we talked a lot about that the
- 7:45Speaker 1: most expected and it feels a little bit more real
- 7:49Speaker 1: that that situation could be tenuous right now. The yesterday
- 7:54Speaker 1: we talked a lot about this on Patriots Unfiltered. We
- 7:57Speaker 1: went back and forth a lot about Kaishan Boody's future
- 8:01Speaker 1: if you keep him with AJ Brown? Is he a
- 8:04Speaker 1: second contract guy with the Patriots, seeing that he's going
- 8:07Speaker 1: into the last year of his rookie deal. He doesn't
- 8:09Speaker 1: have the fifth year option. He wasn't a first round pick,
- 8:11Speaker 1: so he doesn't have the fifth year option element. Like
- 8:14Speaker 1: Christian Gonzales does, same question. Where do we stand currently
- 8:19Speaker 1: right now with Keishn Booty and his future here?
- 8:24Speaker 2: You can't trade It's all tied in AJ Brown. Yeah,
- 8:28Speaker 2: you can't trade him until you have AJ Brown in
- 8:29Speaker 2: the building. Even if you think it's ninety nine point
- 8:31Speaker 2: nine percent, that one weird thing happens and now you've
- 8:34Speaker 2: traded Kishan Booting, you didn't end up with AJ Brown.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Now you're not a good spot at wide receiver. So
- 8:40Speaker 2: you know, I feel like he probably knows that. I
- 8:42Speaker 2: feel like they probably know that. You know, it's if
- 8:45Speaker 2: that thing happens, is the damage done and you're gonna
- 8:48Speaker 2: have to trade him anyway, or do you bring him
- 8:50Speaker 2: back and be like, hey.
- 8:50Speaker 1: No, there's a role for you.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I think it's probably just in order of operations thing
- 8:55Speaker 2: like once they get aj Brown, that's the next show
- 8:57Speaker 2: to drop.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And you know he knows it. He's on expiring contract.
- 9:01Speaker 2: He probably figures out if you don't want me here,
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm not gonna show up when I don't need to
- 9:05Speaker 2: show up and write probably okay with it, like get
- 9:09Speaker 2: a chance to get some of those younger guys some
- 9:11Speaker 2: looks and yeah.
- 9:13Speaker 1: He Abel did mention that he's been in touch with
- 9:16Speaker 1: Kaisehan Boody. Yeah, and they feel good about where Kaishan
- 9:19Speaker 1: Boody is in terms of staying in shape and doing
- 9:23Speaker 1: all that stuff. And he mentioned, well, it also helps
- 9:26Speaker 1: very able to say that because if they're going to
- 9:27Speaker 1: trade him, you can't go up there and be like, yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 1: he's sure. You know, so you have no clue what's
- 9:31Speaker 1: going on with them. So I was kind of I
- 9:34Speaker 1: hate to come across with Kishon Boody and I felt
- 9:36Speaker 1: like I did yesterday and I feel bad about it,
- 9:39Speaker 1: like I hate to come across like I don't like
- 9:41Speaker 1: the player and like negative on the player, because that's
- 9:43Speaker 1: not where I'm coming from. I just think he kind
- 9:46Speaker 1: of is what he is, and I give him a
- 9:49Speaker 1: lot of credit. And I give him a lot of
- 9:51Speaker 1: credit for two things. One, pushing through all the things
- 9:56Speaker 1: that he's been through, both on the field and off
- 9:59Speaker 1: the field, to get himself into a position where he's
- 10:02Speaker 1: a pro he's a pro NFL player, and that wasn't
- 10:07Speaker 1: a guarantee when he was drafted in the sixth round
- 10:09Speaker 1: and had some issues and things like that. The other
- 10:12Speaker 1: thing I give him a lot of credit for is
- 10:14Speaker 1: that he's more or less reinvented himself post traumatic ankle injury.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And when he pre ankle injury at LSU, he's like
- 10:24Speaker 1: this explosive off the ball receiver, you know, moving inside,
- 10:29Speaker 1: moving outside, catch and run guy. Like I remember when
- 10:33Speaker 1: he broke out at LSU his freshman year, there was
- 10:37Speaker 1: like some Odell Beckham type comps for him, like that
- 10:40Speaker 1: kind of ball carrier, that kind of threat, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: maybe some Aj Brown like that sort of player. And
- 10:48Speaker 1: post ankle injury at LSU, he just he admitted it
- 10:51Speaker 1: last year like he just doesn't he doesn't have that
- 10:53Speaker 1: level of juice anymore. He didn't get it all the
- 10:56Speaker 1: way back. He didn't get that level of explosiveness back.
- 11:00Speaker 1: And he's reinvented himself as like a catchpoint guy, like
- 11:03Speaker 1: a guy that can win with muscled ball tracking, boxing
- 11:08Speaker 1: guys out winning the ball at the catch point down
- 11:11Speaker 1: the field, that sort of thing, and you know, you
- 11:14Speaker 1: really using like body positioning and like play strength to
- 11:18Speaker 1: just kind of power through coverage and make plays on
- 11:22Speaker 1: the football down the field like we saw all last year.
- 11:26Speaker 1: I just wonder if are there ways for him to
- 11:30Speaker 1: expand his role, because if you're pro cash on Booty
- 11:35Speaker 1: and you want to keep him around and you think
- 11:36Speaker 1: there's more there, that was the big conversation we were having,
- 11:39Speaker 1: was is there more there? He had forty six targets,
- 11:42Speaker 1: thirty three catches, five hundred and fifty yards, six touchdowns
- 11:45Speaker 1: last year. For most people that are pro cached on Booty,
- 11:49Speaker 1: they would say, well, if you up his targets to
- 11:51Speaker 1: ninety or one hundred and you double his targets, well,
- 11:55Speaker 1: wouldn't that just double his yards? And I would just
- 11:58Speaker 1: say not necessarily, because there you can still have the
- 12:00Speaker 1: same insane efficiency right that he had, the yards per catch,
- 12:04Speaker 1: the completion rate, that he had on those throws. If
- 12:07Speaker 1: he has a higher volume role, and when you see
- 12:09Speaker 1: with higher volume receivers is the ability to win at
- 12:12Speaker 1: all three levels of the defense, the ability to move
- 12:14Speaker 1: around the formation for a lot of those guys. But
- 12:17Speaker 1: I would say a lot of it is like all
- 12:19Speaker 1: they have three levels of ways to threat the defense,
- 12:23Speaker 1: you know, like slants in cuts, vertical routes, like the
- 12:27Speaker 1: whole route trees available that get open in all different
- 12:30Speaker 1: levels of the defense and different coverages. I think right
- 12:33Speaker 1: now he's kind of like a go ball specialist. Yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 1: and he's really good at that one trick, but I
- 12:38Speaker 1: don't know if he has other branches to his route
- 12:41Speaker 1: tree to expand it. So for that reason, like I
- 12:45Speaker 1: don't see Kishan Budi becoming a more high volume player.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I think he's kind of perfectly placed in a role
- 12:53Speaker 1: where he's a low volume receiver and can have that
- 12:56Speaker 1: high efficiency in that high yards per catch out put.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Where does that leave him on the Patriots? I think
- 13:04Speaker 1: is obviously tied to AJ Brown, But I would also
- 13:08Speaker 1: just say, like you know, I'd be weary in some
- 13:10Speaker 1: ways of giving him a huge second contract because isn't
- 13:15Speaker 1: this and we saw him out there today, and I
- 13:16Speaker 1: know that you know, we'll get to it in a second,
- 13:19Speaker 1: because he was targeted on the throw that made through
- 13:21Speaker 1: an interception on today. Wouldn't you ideally think that you
- 13:25Speaker 1: could get thirty five matches in five hundred yards from Kyle?
- 13:29Speaker 1: That should be Ky Williams's role exactly. And so if
- 13:32Speaker 1: A J.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Brown is going to start and then Kyle Williams is
- 13:35Speaker 2: kind of your your you know, backup pick your spots
- 13:39Speaker 2: like big play guy.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's gonna be excuse me. AJ Brown's not
- 13:46Speaker 1: gonna be here or A J.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Brown's not gonna be here for just one year, right,
- 13:50Speaker 2: So what you're going to pay Kashawn Booty and he's
- 13:53Speaker 2: gonna want borderline starting receiver money because that's what he's been.
- 13:58Speaker 2: You're gonna pay him that to be the third outside guy.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's just not realistic. So I'm with you, Like, I
- 14:06Speaker 2: think he's a solid player, is a good rotational player.
- 14:08Speaker 2: There's a role for him in the NFL by all means.
- 14:11Speaker 2: It's just he's not gonna play over A. J.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Brown. And you're trying to develop Kyle Williams. His contracts
- 14:17Speaker 1: up the end of the.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Year, there really is no shorter, long term role for him,
- 14:20Speaker 2: and if you can get something for him at that
- 14:22Speaker 2: point instead of just letting him walk, why wouldn't you
- 14:24Speaker 2: get something for him?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, that's the big rub for me. With Kaishan Boody.
- 14:28Speaker 1: It's not so much the player. It's the fact that
- 14:30Speaker 1: he's gonna need a new contract if.
- 14:32Speaker 2: He if he was still signed for three years, right,
- 14:34Speaker 2: you keep him and he's good depth and all of that, right,
- 14:37Speaker 2: right exactly, he's not.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So Christian Gonzales, Kaishan Boody, those were it's
- 14:42Speaker 1: sort of the big ones that we feel maybe might
- 14:45Speaker 1: be contract related or something like that. Right. Uh. Carlon
- 14:49Speaker 1: Davis mccollins. Harold Landry not shocking that those guys, you know,
- 14:54Speaker 1: veteran players that aren't practicing in May is not terribly shocking.
- 14:58Speaker 2: I mean, just given the role they need Landry to play,
- 15:02Speaker 2: in the fact he's coming off an injury, it's I
- 15:04Speaker 2: don't want to say it's concerning, but like, are he
- 15:07Speaker 2: still really he's still rehaving this you think, and that
- 15:10Speaker 2: becomes probably.
- 15:12Speaker 1: He or he could just you know, it's your I
- 15:14Speaker 1: guess he could have just got or whatever it is
- 15:16Speaker 1: a guy that was a captain last year. Sure, he
- 15:18Speaker 1: came last year for all of them, right, I don't
- 15:19Speaker 1: think he missed any last year, that sounds right, But
- 15:22Speaker 1: it was also his first year here, that's true. I
- 15:24Speaker 1: don't know. I just he's somebody.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I just think you'll watch a little bit closer because
- 15:28Speaker 2: he's a very, very very crucial player for them this year,
- 15:31Speaker 2: especially that I mean Akis not being here, So I
- 15:33Speaker 2: want to get to that, Like there's.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Gonna be a lot.
- 15:36Speaker 2: They need Harold Landry to be a guy this year
- 15:39Speaker 2: for that defense to be what it probably needs to
- 15:42Speaker 2: be for them to get back to and win the
- 15:43Speaker 2: Super Bowl. They need Landry to be the guy he
- 15:45Speaker 2: was before he got hurt last year. So anything with him,
- 15:48Speaker 2: I think you monitor a little bit closer.
- 15:50Speaker 1: So the other two Gay Bacchus or rookies, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 1: Gay Bacchus and Kyle Dixon. We did see Kyle Dixon
- 15:56Speaker 1: on the lower field, so it sounds like Kyle Dixon's
- 15:59Speaker 1: dealing with probably something more on the minor side that
- 16:02Speaker 1: he's not a full participant in the practice. Gay Bacchus
- 16:06Speaker 1: is an interesting one. We didn't we saw him physically
- 16:08Speaker 1: at rookie Minicamp, but he wasn't participating in rookie Minicamp,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and now he's not at the first OTA practice either.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And he still hasn't signed his rookie contract, So neither's
- 16:19Speaker 1: Lomu Loga's participating. It's Lomo and acus At still haven't
- 16:23Speaker 1: signed the rookie contracts. Rareden has signed his deal and
- 16:27Speaker 1: he was back out there after missing rookie miniicamp, so
- 16:29Speaker 1: Raredon came back. You know, we saw Raridon today out
- 16:33Speaker 1: there with Achis. In the pre draft process, there was
- 16:37Speaker 1: a hamstring that limited him a little bit. He didn't
- 16:40Speaker 1: work out at the Combine because of the hamstring. He
- 16:42Speaker 1: had like his own private workout in early April before
- 16:46Speaker 1: the draft for teams after not participating in the Combine
- 16:50Speaker 1: or Illinois Pro Day. So it could be tied to
- 16:53Speaker 1: the hamstring, don't I don't know that that's just conjecture,
- 16:57Speaker 1: but it could be. This is one that I'm starting
- 17:01Speaker 1: to perk up a little bit with, Like you're not
- 17:03Speaker 1: working out in rookie mini camp early days of OTAs,
- 17:07Speaker 1: he doesn't seem like he's out there either. This is
- 17:09Speaker 1: a player that most of us thought was going to
- 17:12Speaker 1: be have the clearest path to contribute right away because
- 17:16Speaker 1: of the need at that spot, Like Lomu is probably
- 17:19Speaker 1: gonna sit behind the two tackles, Rareden's gonna sit behind
- 17:23Speaker 1: Hunter Henry and Julian Hill and learn the ropes. At
- 17:25Speaker 1: least Akis was the one that was supposed to contribute
- 17:29Speaker 1: right away. And we know how this goes, like the
- 17:32Speaker 1: train starts moving in the spring, and if you're not
- 17:35Speaker 1: on the train, then you fall behind, and that whole thing.
- 17:38Speaker 1: This one has my intentnas up a little bit. What's
- 17:41Speaker 1: going on with him? He wasn't Mike Rable wasn't asked
- 17:43Speaker 1: about it today. Hopefully he gets asked about it next
- 17:46Speaker 1: week when he has another press conference before practice on Tuesday.
- 17:50Speaker 1: But it would be nice to see Akis out there.
- 17:53Speaker 1: And he's not out there.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, No, it's again between him and Landry, like that's
- 17:58Speaker 2: their thinnest spot. I think that position is probably the
- 18:01Speaker 2: biggest question going into the season the ed rusher group
- 18:04Speaker 2: as a whole, and your top veteran and your top
- 18:06Speaker 2: rookie both weren't there and are both I forget if
- 18:10Speaker 2: I said already Acts was dealing with a hamstring issue
- 18:13Speaker 2: during the pre draft process. If I don't know for
- 18:15Speaker 2: sure that that's it, but just he's missing time. He
- 18:18Speaker 2: was dealing with that injury.
- 18:19Speaker 1: You mentioned it. It's part of the story.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Those are two crucial players, Draymon Jones, your top edge
- 18:24Speaker 2: rusher right now, Draymond Jones, Elijah Ponder.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and then who is it after that?
- 18:27Speaker 2: You're looking at Braden Swinston, take another step at Quentavious Hutchins,
- 18:30Speaker 2: the seventh round pick.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Like that group gets real thin, real quick.
- 18:33Speaker 2: These are guys you need, and you need it one
- 18:34Speaker 2: hundred percent, and so it is absolutely notable.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yep. So uh, you mentioned Elijah Ponder. He got a
- 18:40Speaker 1: lot of the run there, opposite of Draymond Jones, without Swint,
- 18:45Speaker 1: without Landry and Akis. I didn't see Swinson get a
- 18:48Speaker 1: ton of reps with the top defense. It was mostly
- 18:51Speaker 1: Ponder Draymond Jones. We'll get to some more of that
- 18:54Speaker 1: here in a second. I wanted to run through attendance
- 18:56Speaker 1: really quickly. The last piece of sort of attendance, no,
- 19:01Speaker 1: was Elijah ah Tucker's participation. So this is kind of
- 19:05Speaker 1: a segue into the offensive line, which I think is
- 19:07Speaker 1: the second biggest story. I think the biggest story is
- 19:10Speaker 1: well Frankly, the biggest story is probably Mike Rabel, but
- 19:13Speaker 1: we don't talk about that on the show. So the
- 19:15Speaker 1: second biggest story is Christian Gonzales. The third biggest story,
- 19:18Speaker 1: I would say is the offensive line. With the offensive line,
- 19:23Speaker 1: the first bit of news coming out of this practice,
- 19:26Speaker 1: Elijah Fairratucker has the torn triceps. He you know, ended
- 19:30Speaker 1: his season early last year. As a result, he's still
- 19:33Speaker 1: working his way back. It seems he participated in the walkthroughs,
- 19:37Speaker 1: the jog throughs, that sort of portion of practice, and
- 19:40Speaker 1: with the other starters on the offensive line, he was
- 19:43Speaker 1: the top left guard. You know, he wasn't you know,
- 19:46Speaker 1: Rupeich wasn't rotating in until we got to the actual
- 19:49Speaker 1: live team live. I put in air quotes a live yeah,
- 19:53Speaker 1: air quotes live part of practice. Then we got into
- 19:57Speaker 1: that part of practice, the real eleven on eleven and stuff,
- 20:01Speaker 1: And item number one is that Vera Tucker doesn't seem
- 20:04Speaker 1: fully ready to do that yet coming off the rehab
- 20:07Speaker 1: of the triceps. Item number two is that and I
- 20:14Speaker 1: think it's uh is maybe the current like inside track
- 20:20Speaker 1: at winning a guard job, you know, the backup backup
- 20:24Speaker 1: guard competition here, very very early, very early days, like
- 20:31Speaker 1: no pads, no contact whatsoever. Ben Brown was at center
- 20:35Speaker 1: for most of his practice. So Ben Brown swings, you know,
- 20:37Speaker 1: in the interior, so like that, that's really your top
- 20:40Speaker 1: backup there. What do you make of I don't really
- 20:44Speaker 1: make much of Elijah Hratucker not being a full go yet.
- 20:47Speaker 1: I think he'll be fine. You know, this is just
- 20:49Speaker 1: sort of a rehab sort of process thing with him
- 20:54Speaker 1: with Rupsich. What do you make of him being right now?
- 20:57Speaker 1: At least as for what it's worth. Early leader in
- 21:01Speaker 1: the clubhouse there, veteran guy who Rabel has experienced with.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Big dude. I don't realize how big he was, uh
- 21:07Speaker 1: until today's practice. We just didn't see him line up much.
- 21:10Speaker 2: He didn't get here I think until into the season
- 21:13Speaker 2: last year. I believe they signed him out of like
- 21:18Speaker 2: oh no, sorry, he was here. What what's up with
- 21:21Speaker 2: you signed the practice squad on September thirtieth?
- 21:23Speaker 1: What's what's their infatuation with Culver Stockton? Right? Guy? We
- 21:27Speaker 1: need to figure out if there there's got to be
- 21:29Speaker 1: somebody tied to Culver Stockton. Yeah, that's tied to New England. Well,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I don't know, because was with him in Tennessee. Yeah,
- 21:37Speaker 1: so there or maybe cow people. Yeah, the Raid and
- 21:40Speaker 1: Tree uh Rabel Tree, because something is they have they have.
- 21:45Speaker 1: There's two guys from a very obscure school, the new
- 21:48Speaker 1: Rutgers or the new John Carroll University, I'd say, is
- 21:51Speaker 1: what it really is? No, because John Carroll University is
- 21:54Speaker 1: like coaches, I know, but they Rutgers is at least
- 21:58Speaker 1: a D one program and a big conference like Culver
- 22:02Speaker 1: Stockton isn't in the NIA eight, Like this is like
- 22:06Speaker 1: very small.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Yeah, anyway, big dude has some experience with them. Veteran
- 22:14Speaker 2: more of a veteran I should say. He's going to
- 22:15Speaker 2: his third year, but kind of reminds me of West
- 22:17Speaker 2: Sweitzer last year.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Remember we saw him out there.
- 22:19Speaker 2: We're like, is he just a veteran and they're giving
- 22:22Speaker 2: him the difference here? Or is he really in line?
- 22:25Speaker 2: But I mean when you look at it, especially on the.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Left side, like who else would it be?
- 22:30Speaker 2: Kanen Wallace is really only repped it right guard. They
- 22:33Speaker 2: had Sebastian goody eras who's a tackle is the third
- 22:36Speaker 2: left guard? Yeah, or the second left guard, however you
- 22:40Speaker 2: want to cut it. We didn't see John Darius Morgan
- 22:42Speaker 2: we didn't see Jacob Rizzy during those periods. Maybe it's
- 22:45Speaker 2: by default that could be another one that highlights I've
- 22:47Speaker 2: said this like guard could be something they're looking for
- 22:50Speaker 2: in the waiver wire at the end of the season.
- 22:52Speaker 1: So at the end of the training camp, Ben Brown
- 22:54Speaker 1: was you know, I got some questions about, well where
- 22:57Speaker 1: was Ben Brown? Ben Brown was at center. Ben Brown's
- 22:59Speaker 1: at central whole time, and so was Rizzy. Rizzy was
- 23:01Speaker 1: repping with you know, Jared Wilson as the top center.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Ben Brown. Yeah, Rizzy was the third center. You have
- 23:09Speaker 1: Kid Wallace, who you know was drafted by the Drod
- 23:13Speaker 1: Mayo year Patriots and not a Mike Rabel guy, not
- 23:16Speaker 1: a Rabel draft pick, Makai Butler who played a little bit,
- 23:21Speaker 1: got some reps with the second team right guard at
- 23:23Speaker 1: right right guard. So he's in this conversation. And then
- 23:27Speaker 1: rupsis you know, obviously the two udfas, who are you know,
- 23:31Speaker 1: the two us crown over Like those guys are in
- 23:34Speaker 1: a real developmental right period of their development right now.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So maybe it was Westweitzer. Maybe it was by default
- 23:43Speaker 1: that he was like the last kind of guy left
- 23:45Speaker 1: that made the most sense. But he was the one
- 23:48Speaker 1: that stepped in for Vera Tucker with you know, Ben
- 23:50Speaker 1: Brown obviously backing up center. So the top line when
- 23:55Speaker 1: they were whole in the walkthroughs was as expected. This
- 23:58Speaker 1: is kind of item number two on the line with
- 24:01Speaker 1: Caleb Blomu and where he ends up. So Will Campbell
- 24:04Speaker 1: was at left tackle the whole the whole practice with
- 24:06Speaker 1: the ones. I didn't see Kayleb Bloomoo over there at all.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Elijah Vera Tucker at left guard, you know, during the
- 24:13Speaker 1: walk through periods rupsich during team Jared Wilson at center,
- 24:18Speaker 1: Mike on Wenu at right guard, and Morgan Moses at
- 24:21Speaker 1: right tackle, and then Caleb Bloomu is like Morgan Moses
- 24:24Speaker 1: would take like three or four reps and then Kayleb
- 24:27Speaker 1: Blomu would take his spot at right tackle and take
- 24:30Speaker 1: a couple with the starters, and then they do that
- 24:33Speaker 1: over and over again. So Caleb Blomo was repping behind
- 24:37Speaker 1: Morgan Moses at right tackle. And this time of year,
- 24:39Speaker 1: in May, it's not uncommon at all for Morgan Moses
- 24:43Speaker 1: to be on a pitch count and to be rotating
- 24:46Speaker 1: quite heavily in team periods. So right now, that's where
- 24:49Speaker 1: they're they're training. Lomu is at right tackle, so we
- 24:53Speaker 1: do not have much to the chagrin of your station,
- 24:56Speaker 1: I think we do not have any sort of left
- 24:59Speaker 1: tackle competition yet. Like right now, it's still Will Campbell's job,
- 25:04Speaker 1: Caleb Lomu's training behind Morgan Moses, like we all kind
- 25:08Speaker 1: of anticipated. What did you make out of what you
- 25:11Speaker 1: saw from Lomu. I have a couple of takes on
- 25:13Speaker 1: that and uh, you know, a couple more on the line.
- 25:15Speaker 1: But what did you see from Lomu?
- 25:17Speaker 2: Uh, his stance is different. He's very upright at Utah, Yeah,
- 25:22Speaker 2: and he's.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Much lower so as Campbell. That was one thing with
- 25:25Speaker 1: Campbell coming out was that he was, you know, more
- 25:28Speaker 1: up right because they all, you know, they're always in
- 25:29Speaker 1: the two point stance like you know, so they don't.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Know, but even the two point stance is lower now. Yeah,
- 25:35Speaker 2: for I don't know why I stood out more for them.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Maybe I just don't remember Campbell from last year. But
- 25:39Speaker 2: Vrabel said before practice there were some things he was
- 25:42Speaker 2: talking about because we hadn't heard from since they made
- 25:44Speaker 2: that pick was talking about with Lomu said, it's it's
- 25:46Speaker 2: not that guys can't do things sometimes they're just not
- 25:49Speaker 2: to coach to do things in college. You've been big
- 25:51Speaker 2: on this with Lomu actually in terms of the you know,
- 25:54Speaker 2: how r PO heavy that offense was and things like that.
- 25:57Speaker 2: So and he mentioned that there's just some technique things
- 25:59Speaker 2: that they've coached him through. That was where I looked at,
- 26:01Speaker 2: like they definitely tweaked his stance, his pre snap two
- 26:05Speaker 2: point stance.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, some of the other stuff is
- 26:08Speaker 1: just really hard to tell technique whise blocking in a
- 26:10Speaker 1: non padded setting, but much lower stance. That would be
- 26:14Speaker 1: the big stand the fact that he was just at
- 26:16Speaker 1: right tackle the whole time. Yeah, there was a couple
- 26:18Speaker 1: of times inside of Rooking Mini caamp a little bit too.
- 26:20Speaker 1: He was getting beat around on the high side. Is
- 26:23Speaker 1: outside edge, especially by like octave hands, like double swipes
- 26:28Speaker 1: and things like that with pass rushers. Like that to
- 26:31Speaker 1: me is all punch timing and like figuring out how
- 26:34Speaker 1: to have different pitches to throw with your punches. Yeah,
- 26:37Speaker 1: you know, in college, like you can just throw the
- 26:40Speaker 1: same punch over and over again, and if you're good,
- 26:42Speaker 1: it's not gonna make a difference once you get up
- 26:44Speaker 1: to the pros, and like Elijah Ponder or Draymond Jones.
- 26:47Speaker 1: It's mostly Elijah Ponder on the right side that he
- 26:50Speaker 1: was going up against in Landry Spot most of the
- 26:52Speaker 1: time in the pros. When a guy sees that you're
- 26:55Speaker 1: a two hand puncher, like he sort of gets a
- 26:56Speaker 1: rhythm on you of like, Okay, you're gonna throw it
- 26:59Speaker 1: here on your second step, I'm gonna swipe it away
- 27:01Speaker 1: and I'm gonna bend. So, you know, maybe having a
- 27:04Speaker 1: little bit more of a change up, and I think Campbell,
- 27:07Speaker 1: you know, vertical sets with Campbell last year was this
- 27:10Speaker 1: became a little bit of a problem too, with some predictability,
- 27:13Speaker 1: like these are all things that like young linemen kind
- 27:16Speaker 1: of go through. The one thing I really liked with
- 27:18Speaker 1: the line too, just to point out a couple more
- 27:21Speaker 1: things there. I really just liked the look of Jared
- 27:23Speaker 1: Wilson at center, like it means nothing. It's so stupid
- 27:26Speaker 1: the actually, but it just looked I liked how it
- 27:29Speaker 1: looked better. I liked how the line looked better. Just
- 27:33Speaker 1: looking at Campbell and Verituck are next to each other,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I thought that they just sort of had more surface
- 27:38Speaker 1: area over there. There's a bigger body next to Campbell,
- 27:41Speaker 1: which I thought just kind of like looked aesthetically, looked
- 27:44Speaker 1: the right way. And I think Jared Wilson looks like
- 27:47Speaker 1: a natural at the center position where you can be
- 27:49Speaker 1: a little smaller, a little blockier, like you don't necessarily
- 27:52Speaker 1: need to have that kind of girth like you do
- 27:55Speaker 1: at the other spot. So that was the offensive line
- 27:59Speaker 1: for most practice. The other couple of things on the
- 28:02Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball that stood out to me
- 28:04Speaker 1: Alex first look at Romeo Dobbs, who I will say, like,
- 28:08Speaker 1: I didn't really think of Romeo Dobs in this way.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Per Se fills the suit really nicely, like he's he's
- 28:15Speaker 1: got it, he's got it. All about the aesthetics today, Huh, Well,
- 28:18Speaker 1: what else am I going to look at? No, I
- 28:19Speaker 1: know it's that's what this is. That's fair. First first
- 28:23Speaker 1: throw we have seen of the spring there out there yesterday,
- 28:26Speaker 1: so you know we weren't there very first throw. The
- 28:30Speaker 1: spring is a little like slant under route to Romeo Dobbs,
- 28:33Speaker 1: and I was like, how many times are we going
- 28:35Speaker 1: to see that for the next three or four years?
- 28:38Speaker 1: Like we might see that forty five times next year
- 28:41Speaker 1: between those two guys. But I really liked. I liked
- 28:43Speaker 1: how we filled out the suit. I did. I thought
- 28:45Speaker 1: that he he looked like in granted, there weren't you know,
- 28:48Speaker 1: Kaishawan Boody wasn't there, mac Collins wasn't there. So some
- 28:51Speaker 1: of their bigger wide receivers weren't there. But just looking
- 28:54Speaker 1: at him next to Kyle Williams, Efton, Chisholm, Pop Douglas
- 28:58Speaker 1: some of the IDA, I was like, that's the NFL
- 29:01Speaker 1: receiver right there, and that's that's the serious not just
- 29:04Speaker 1: the Guardian cap.
- 29:05Speaker 2: I don't think something maybe it's the eighty seven. Maybe
- 29:08Speaker 2: maybe it's a real wide receiver number. I wish more
- 29:10Speaker 2: guys were numbers in the eighties. Yeah, and I thought,
- 29:13Speaker 2: you know, as much as you can be. On the
- 29:16Speaker 2: first day of OTA's him and Drake May felt like
- 29:18Speaker 2: they were on the same page again for this point
- 29:21Speaker 2: of the year, for whatever that's worth, there's obviously a
- 29:23Speaker 2: way to go, like just to counter it, not to
- 29:25Speaker 2: pick on the guy, just to counter it. There was
- 29:27Speaker 2: one play during one of the more live periods where
- 29:31Speaker 2: Drake kind of doubled back in the pocket to extend it.
- 29:33Speaker 2: He wanted to throw a I think it was a
- 29:34Speaker 2: sailor out a deep sail route to Julian Hill.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Hill gave up on the route.
- 29:43Speaker 2: Hill started jogging and ended up being an overthrow. And
- 29:47Speaker 2: that's especially with this guy at quarterback. With this kind
- 29:50Speaker 2: of quarterback, you can't give up on routes. You're any
- 29:53Speaker 2: of the five guys at any point he could find you.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Yeah. So, and that's not to say Julian Hill's gonna
- 29:59Speaker 1: so like you hope he learned his lesson. You only
- 30:02Speaker 1: do that so many times before the quarterback doesn't trust you.
- 30:04Speaker 1: But like didn't see any of that from Romeo Dobs
- 30:06Speaker 1: or anything like that. Like felt like him and Drake
- 30:08Speaker 1: May for day one had good chemistry. Yeah, for day one,
- 30:11Speaker 1: I thought.
- 30:12Speaker 3: So.
- 30:12Speaker 1: There was one throw down on the right sideline of
- 30:14Speaker 1: Romeo Dobs where I think he got a little bit
- 30:17Speaker 1: hung up on. I think it was vildor one of
- 30:19Speaker 1: those outside corners. And at first I was like, oh, well,
- 30:25Speaker 1: you know, because I in my head when Drake May,
- 30:27Speaker 1: you know, went to throw the ball, I was saying, like,
- 30:30Speaker 1: keep running to Romeo Dobs. Right. On the one hand,
- 30:33Speaker 1: I was like, oh, well, he's probably adjusting to that.
- 30:35Speaker 1: On the other hand, he played with Jordan Love last year,
- 30:36Speaker 1: who does the same thing. You know, a lot of
- 30:38Speaker 1: back foot you know, die in his face bombs from
- 30:41Speaker 1: Jordan Love too, So that was maybe one where I was,
- 30:44Speaker 1: you know, he maybe just got tripped up or hung
- 30:46Speaker 1: up on the coverage just a little bit and wasn't
- 30:48Speaker 1: able to you know, outrun the football, so to speak.
- 30:51Speaker 1: But I thought that in general, just you know, looked
- 30:54Speaker 1: the part for the first impression, Like I said, you know,
- 30:58Speaker 1: I'm commenting on another man physique, and I thought that
- 31:01Speaker 1: the physique passed the eye test and you know, looked
- 31:04Speaker 1: good in the Patriots jersey for the first time. Speaking
- 31:07Speaker 1: of Drake May, we've gone to thirty minutes in and
- 31:09Speaker 1: we still haven't talked about the quarterback, which I feel
- 31:11Speaker 1: like is a decent sign. It's also not really you know.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Well, no, I want to talk about this because they
- 31:15Speaker 2: said this last year. Yeah, it's been years since. Do
- 31:21Speaker 2: you remember I said I we had this, and I
- 31:23Speaker 2: think it's been People got mad at me for this take,
- 31:26Speaker 2: but remember I had that whole thing about last year,
- 31:29Speaker 2: that whole thing last year about like I can't wait
- 31:31Speaker 2: until it's not Drake May just isn't news yep, and like, oh,
- 31:35Speaker 2: Drake may did this and that it practice like okay,
- 31:37Speaker 2: and like we never would sit here and be like
- 31:41Speaker 2: Tom Brady did, like all right, yeah, he's Tom Brady.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Of course he did all that were there with Drake.
- 31:46Speaker 2: How many years has it been since the quarterback? Since nitpicking?
- 31:50Speaker 2: The quarterback performance was not the top story in one
- 31:53Speaker 2: of these things. We did it last year because Drake
- 31:56Speaker 2: was still kind of unknown. We did it the year
- 31:58Speaker 2: before because he was a rookie, he was in competition
- 32:00Speaker 2: Kob Jacoby Brissett. We basically did it all three mac
- 32:04Speaker 2: Jones years, and we did it the year before that
- 32:07Speaker 2: with Newton Stidham.
- 32:09Speaker 1: So this is the first.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Time since like twenty nineteen we don't have to lead
- 32:12Speaker 2: a practice recap, which with here's.
- 32:14Speaker 1: What the quarterback did. What's going to happen?
- 32:17Speaker 2: We don't know, Like how great is it having a
- 32:19Speaker 2: known in quarterback and we don't do this every week,
- 32:21Speaker 2: but the fact that's the first time we've been able
- 32:23Speaker 2: to do this and how long it's kind of nice
- 32:26Speaker 2: it is. I just want to recognize the moment. I
- 32:27Speaker 2: want to recognize Drake made.
- 32:29Speaker 1: For Look how far we come, Look at us we
- 32:31Speaker 1: have a quarterback. Isn't this great? Uh so you get
- 32:35Speaker 1: throw pick? Though he did throw a pick, but that
- 32:37Speaker 1: is three fewer picks that he threw in this practice
- 32:39Speaker 1: last So I thought that their overall the passing game
- 32:42Speaker 1: was a little bit clunky. It's always a little clunky,
- 32:45Speaker 1: but it's always right. It's way too early to overreact
- 32:49Speaker 1: to that in any sort of way. I thought it
- 32:51Speaker 1: was a little bit bumpy, though there was a couple
- 32:53Speaker 1: of like May sprays in there that where I thought,
- 32:55Speaker 1: you know, maybe the route wasn't exactly what he was
- 32:58Speaker 1: expecting to see, any kind of air mailed it over
- 33:00Speaker 1: some guys heads, you know, the interception. I know, I
- 33:03Speaker 1: tweeted about it, and everybody's Oh, Kyle Williams not on
- 33:06Speaker 1: the same page still with Drake May, still running around route.
- 33:09Speaker 1: It was a bad throw. Threw it, threw it out inside.
- 33:13Speaker 1: You can't throw it out inside, not in the NFL
- 33:16Speaker 1: at least maybe you can get away with that in college.
- 33:18Speaker 1: If you throw an out route, especially to the field,
- 33:21Speaker 1: as Drake May said after practice, that thing's got to
- 33:23Speaker 1: be hummed into the sideline, Like you can't throw the
- 33:26Speaker 1: ball to the inside shoulder because it's gonna get jumped,
- 33:28Speaker 1: like Karen Prunty jumped that throw a little bit. Is
- 33:33Speaker 1: it coron a little up and down for the passing
- 33:38Speaker 1: game and the offense and Drake May. But there was
- 33:40Speaker 1: still like three or four moments that it was like, Okay,
- 33:43Speaker 1: there's Drake Drake May May. You know, like the throw
- 33:46Speaker 1: to Hunter Henry on the sale route settling him into
- 33:49Speaker 1: the zone I thought was a really nice throw. The
- 33:51Speaker 1: crossing route to Pob Douglas was another really nice throw.
- 33:55Speaker 4: You know.
- 33:55Speaker 1: There was like three or four of those where I
- 33:57Speaker 1: still was like, yeah, that's the runner up for MVP.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Put any stock into because last year it kind of
- 34:02Speaker 2: became a thing does he like throwing the Pop Douglas
- 34:05Speaker 2: And where's he throwing for the to the shorter guys
- 34:07Speaker 2: and things like that through Pop Douglas lot.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Today so now there's some guys not out there. So
- 34:14Speaker 1: your top three receivers were mostly Kyle Williams, Pop Douglas,
- 34:17Speaker 1: Romeo Dobbs with Kyle Williams at the ex Romeo Dobs
- 34:21Speaker 1: at the Z Pop Douglas in the slot right. So
- 34:23Speaker 1: that was really there, like eleven personnel grouping out there. Today.
- 34:28Speaker 1: We saw a lot of Hunter Henry and Julian Hill
- 34:31Speaker 1: not so much rared in with the top group, and
- 34:33Speaker 1: we even saw West over over Rareden. Yeah, and then
- 34:35Speaker 1: we also saw you know, obviously Gilliam get some routes
- 34:40Speaker 1: in there as well. I wanted to get to Pop
- 34:43Speaker 1: and also a little bit Eften Chisholm kind of related.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I think those two are kind of tied to each
- 34:49Speaker 1: other this this summer, this spring and summer. Pop to me,
- 34:54Speaker 1: and you know that he has that seven on seven
- 34:57Speaker 1: background in Florida where apparently he's like a legend down
- 35:00Speaker 1: there in seven on seven. You say it like you
- 35:02Speaker 1: don't believe it. No, I believe it. I just didn't
- 35:04Speaker 1: see it like I you know it, just you know
- 35:06Speaker 1: that's I believe it. Those are the tails of Pop
- 35:09Speaker 1: Douglas and seven on seven. He tore up camp last
- 35:13Speaker 1: year too, he did. He had an excellent yeah, because
- 35:18Speaker 1: he can't hit him. So when you have this little
- 35:20Speaker 1: jitterbug slot receiver that's got great speed and great quickness
- 35:24Speaker 1: and there's no threat of anybody hitting him coming over
- 35:27Speaker 1: the middle of the field. He was the most active
- 35:29Speaker 1: receiver today. To his credit, he caught pretty much everything
- 35:32Speaker 1: that was thrown his way that was accurate. I think
- 35:35Speaker 1: he had four catches and team drills maybe it was five. Uh.
- 35:38Speaker 1: He was active, he was noticeable, but we probably could
- 35:43Speaker 1: find tape of us talking about Pop Douglas being active
- 35:46Speaker 1: and noticeable in May of last year, and of June
- 35:49Speaker 1: of last year, and even in the early parts of
- 35:51Speaker 1: training camp last year. Like how much for you know,
- 35:56Speaker 1: one practice, we're not really putting much stock into anything. Yeah,
- 35:58Speaker 1: but like, how much is it gonna take for you
- 36:00Speaker 1: to truly believe that Pop Douglas is like taking another stick,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I'm not gonna be able to quit Pop Douglas. I
- 36:05Speaker 1: just love a skill set so much. I think that
- 36:07Speaker 1: guy can be so effective. Again, I'd run him more vertically.
- 36:09Speaker 1: I've said that a million times. You know, it's just
- 36:12Speaker 1: clearly Drake Mate likes throwing the bigger receivers and that's
- 36:14Speaker 1: not Pop Douglas. And was today a sign that maybe
- 36:18Speaker 1: he may has gotten through that and is willing to
- 36:21Speaker 1: get Pop Douglas more involved, or was it just Hey,
- 36:24Speaker 1: I don't know any of these guys that are out here,
- 36:26Speaker 1: I've never really thrown at any of them, but I
- 36:27Speaker 1: know this guy's I'll throw to him like that's we're
- 36:29Speaker 1: gonna have to see. We probably don't get an answer
- 36:31Speaker 1: on that till the summer when everybody's out there, hopefully
- 36:33Speaker 1: including AJ Brown. But yeah, that's where I'm at. It's
- 36:38Speaker 1: just is he he can play? It's just is he
- 36:41Speaker 1: a fit? It comes back to the same thing with him.
- 36:44Speaker 1: It feels like every single time it's just can he
- 36:47Speaker 1: be in the right places at the right times and
- 36:50Speaker 1: can he make the easy plays. I have no doubt
- 36:53Speaker 1: that Pop Douglas has the explosiveness, the speed, the quickness,
- 36:57Speaker 1: the athleticism to be a productive receiver in the NFL.
- 37:01Speaker 1: It's all gonna come down to between the years with him,
- 37:04Speaker 1: and then also his physical limitations in overcoming the fact
- 37:08Speaker 1: that he's five foot eight, right, Like that's a big
- 37:10Speaker 1: part of it too, but that he can't control he is,
- 37:14Speaker 1: how big he is, you know, like he can't grow,
- 37:17Speaker 1: but you can grow as a player mentally, and if
- 37:19Speaker 1: he takes that next step mentally, his quickness inside the problem.
- 37:23Speaker 1: You know, he even ran off Marcus Jones on a
- 37:26Speaker 1: route in this practice where he came back to the
- 37:29Speaker 1: ball on the sideline and ran a nice route on
- 37:31Speaker 1: Marcus Jones and got open in front of him, like
- 37:34Speaker 1: he's a problem for guys up and down the depth
- 37:36Speaker 1: chart corner with his speed. He's just got to be
- 37:39Speaker 1: in the right places, whereas with Fton Chishom, I feel
- 37:42Speaker 1: the exact Oppositefton Chishm. I wonder if Chishm is an
- 37:46Speaker 1: NFL athlete, but man, that guy is always in the
- 37:49Speaker 1: right spot, Like when you watch him run routes inside.
- 37:52Speaker 1: You know, he was working mostly with Tommy DeVito and
- 37:55Speaker 1: this practice, but every single time the ball needed to
- 37:59Speaker 1: come out quickly, every single time they were working those
- 38:01Speaker 1: option routes in the middle of the field. It just
- 38:03Speaker 1: seems like eft and Chishm makes all the right decisions,
- 38:07Speaker 1: but he doesn't have nearly the upside and the athleticism
- 38:10Speaker 1: that a Pop Douglas has. So if that is kind
- 38:13Speaker 1: of a competition, especially once we start to add aj
- 38:15Speaker 1: Brown hopefully into this mix, it does kind of feel
- 38:19Speaker 1: like that final spot at wide receiver could come down
- 38:22Speaker 1: to which slot receiver they prefer, Pop Douglas or eft
- 38:26Speaker 1: and Chisholm. And I think in some ways they're like
- 38:28Speaker 1: polar opposite players even though they play the same position.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Like they one of them is like a speed slot
- 38:35Speaker 1: down the field. More type of receiver like Douglas, who's
- 38:38Speaker 1: gonna win with his you know, just pure speed and explosiveness.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Chishm's gonna win the thinking man's game. Did you what
- 38:45Speaker 1: did you see from Chisham? Do you think he kind
- 38:47Speaker 1: of looked the same to me? But he still is
- 38:49Speaker 1: in all the right places at all the right He
- 38:51Speaker 1: might have bulked up a little bit too. He looks
- 38:53Speaker 1: a little bit bigger. Yeah, kind of the same thing.
- 38:54Speaker 2: He's another guy that only to see when the pads
- 38:56Speaker 2: come on, You'll let to see where he's.
- 38:58Speaker 1: At last thing on the offense, and then we'll move
- 39:00Speaker 1: over to the defense unless you have anything else. Land Larrison,
- 39:04Speaker 1: my guy, Land Larrison Island RB three RB three Land Larrison.
- 39:08Speaker 1: I wish it went a little bit better. There was
- 39:10Speaker 1: some There was a drop at one point. It was
- 39:13Speaker 1: a high pass, but he probably should have caught it.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I counted it as a drop. I didn't think that
- 39:19Speaker 1: he was like pulling away from the pack a whole
- 39:21Speaker 1: lot on some of the screens that they ran in
- 39:23Speaker 1: the practice as well. It didn't necessarily wow me, but
- 39:28Speaker 1: he was the guy. Like we talked about attendance and.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Where Yeah, no play and pretty clearly Terrell Jennings got
- 39:34Speaker 2: a couple of reps there, but it was it was
- 39:36Speaker 2: really Larison swapping with Henderson on the second unit. I
- 39:38Speaker 2: don't think those guys are competing. It just kind of
- 39:40Speaker 2: shows you for that second job. I think it just
- 39:43Speaker 2: shows you where they viewed the cutoff.
- 39:44Speaker 1: I mean we didn't really see Jim Miller, Miles Montgomery
- 39:47Speaker 1: at all, right, except when Baron Morton was out there,
- 39:50Speaker 1: So it feels like Larson's on a different standing from
- 39:53Speaker 1: those guys. And then again ahead of Terrell Jennings, Yeah,
- 39:56Speaker 1: I thought so as well. Do you have anything else
- 39:58Speaker 1: on the offense, Like I mentioned, a lot of Hill,
- 40:01Speaker 1: a lot of Henry, some mcgillam, not a ton of
- 40:04Speaker 1: Raridon with the top group yet very no.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Again we saw west Over over Raridon, Yeah, which feels notable.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Now again, he's a rookie Hill, I have time to
- 40:12Speaker 2: catch up, but I think they're at their best if
- 40:17Speaker 2: he can get into that second tight end roll by
- 40:20Speaker 2: the time the season starts.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I think that's pretty much all I had. You know, again,
- 40:24Speaker 1: we talked about the way the offensive line depth went.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I guess had you feel about Tabby DeVito backup quarterback.
- 40:31Speaker 1: I actually thought he made some good decisions in this practice,
- 40:34Speaker 1: like not necessarily wowing me with like arm, which he's
- 40:37Speaker 1: not going no, And this is more about the decisions. Yeah,
- 40:40Speaker 1: I thought that he looked like he was running the offense.
- 40:43Speaker 1: You know, I didn't think it was a disaster. I
- 40:45Speaker 1: didn't think that the offense came to a halt. He
- 40:47Speaker 1: had one nice play rolling to his right where he
- 40:49Speaker 1: kind of got out of the pocket a little bit
- 40:51Speaker 1: and made a throw extended through. I think it was
- 40:53Speaker 1: to Eftin Chisholm. But overall I thought, fine, you know,
- 40:57Speaker 1: Baron Morton, we didn't see a whole lot of Oh
- 40:59Speaker 1: there's one other thing that we got to circle back
- 41:00Speaker 1: on before we move over to the defense. Kyle Williams.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I talked a little bit about his practice. We talked
- 41:05Speaker 1: a little bit about it earlier. I want to reiterate
- 41:08Speaker 1: that I really felt like the pick wasn't a bad route.
- 41:10Speaker 1: I know that everybody's gonna like gang up on him
- 41:13Speaker 1: and say that it was a bad route underthrown. There
- 41:15Speaker 1: was actually a throw earlier that I thought was maybe
- 41:18Speaker 1: more of a bad route where I think it was
- 41:20Speaker 1: actually with de Vito. Uh, he curled inside and the
- 41:23Speaker 1: Veto threw it outside, and it was you know, they
- 41:25Speaker 1: kind of weren't on the same page exactly there. He
- 41:28Speaker 1: also I couldn't see who the corner was, but he
- 41:31Speaker 1: got behind the defense. He burnt one of the like
- 41:34Speaker 1: UDFA corners and Morton overthrew him. But yeah, he got opened.
- 41:38Speaker 1: He got legitimately opened, so he was active, he was,
- 41:42Speaker 1: you know, involved the ball.
- 41:45Speaker 2: It's tough to judge though without Holland's booty. Aj Brown, like,
- 41:50Speaker 2: we didn't get a full picture of what that depth
- 41:51Speaker 2: chart looks like.
- 41:52Speaker 1: May hit him on one of you know, May's better plays,
- 41:55Speaker 1: not better throws, but he kind of like slidestepped in
- 41:58Speaker 1: you know, kind of the the that May swing through
- 42:01Speaker 1: and slidestep up in the pocket and hit Kyle Williams
- 42:04Speaker 1: on a little shallow crosser. I thought that though it
- 42:07Speaker 1: was there was still some up and down to Kyle
- 42:10Speaker 1: Williams today. The pick wasn't on him, like I will
- 42:13Speaker 1: reiterate that, but I do think that there was still
- 42:17Speaker 1: that semblance of like, Okay, this guy separates, he gets open.
- 42:20Speaker 1: He's clearly got great speed, but they just need him
- 42:23Speaker 1: to like finish the play a little bit better. You know,
- 42:25Speaker 1: it's top of the rat technique. It's you know, getting
- 42:30Speaker 1: well frankly, like on target throws for him because the
- 42:33Speaker 1: one that he burned, the corner down the sideline, like
- 42:35Speaker 1: the Barren Morton just overthrew him like it wasn't no,
- 42:38Speaker 1: he was fine on them, like there was nothing he
- 42:40Speaker 1: could do. He just you know, but it just seems
- 42:42Speaker 1: like a lot of the time with Kyle Williams, and
- 42:44Speaker 1: I want to know what you make of it, Like
- 42:46Speaker 1: things just seem a little bit off sometimes, like it's
- 42:48Speaker 1: just not one hundred percent.
- 42:50Speaker 2: I thought, crisp, Yeah, I thought last year, and this
- 42:53Speaker 2: is where it'll be interesting to see what happens once
- 42:54Speaker 2: everybody's here.
- 42:55Speaker 1: It was the same thing with Chisholm.
- 42:56Speaker 2: He just didn't really get any reps and so much
- 42:59Speaker 2: of this off his timing and chemistry and how many
- 43:02Speaker 2: passes did he how many routes did he run with
- 43:05Speaker 2: Drake May last springing summer. Not a lot, Yeah, because
- 43:07Speaker 2: he's bat member. Kendrick Bord was still here, Javon Baker
- 43:10Speaker 2: was still here, Like and should he have been.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Repping behind some of those guys. I don't know, it
- 43:14Speaker 1: doesn't matter that that parts over.
- 43:16Speaker 2: So when we bring it back around this year, like,
- 43:19Speaker 2: is he gonna get more if Kaishan Booty gets traded?
- 43:21Speaker 1: Even if A J.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Browns here, is he gonna get more as that second X?
- 43:24Speaker 2: Is he gonna get some more reps? Maybe at the
- 43:25Speaker 2: Z behind Romeo Dobbs things like that? Does he kind
- 43:28Speaker 2: of become your base? What's your base eleven?
- 43:32Speaker 1: If A J. Brown's here, Brown Dobbs.
- 43:35Speaker 2: And then Pop mccollins or mccollins, right, But like Kyle
- 43:40Speaker 2: Williams the whole One of the things I liked about
- 43:42Speaker 2: Khia Williams. I think he can play all three positions,
- 43:44Speaker 2: but he was third on the depth chart at all
- 43:46Speaker 2: three positions last year. Yeah, and this year, you know,
- 43:48Speaker 2: he's maybe your top backup at each of those spots.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Potentially even I could see it realistically competing with Hollins
- 43:54Speaker 1: and Pop for some of those eleven reps, especially in
- 43:57Speaker 1: certain situations or certain formations definitely like pure passing spread
- 44:01Speaker 1: formations where you know mac collins might not be the
- 44:04Speaker 1: best option there and someone that could really get open.
- 44:07Speaker 2: So that's that's where I'm curious, Like I thought he
- 44:10Speaker 2: was I'm with you. I thought the timing and things.
- 44:12Speaker 1: Were off, the details were a little bit off. Got
- 44:14Speaker 1: better later in the year, which leads me to believe
- 44:16Speaker 1: he just didn't get a ton of run in the summer.
- 44:18Speaker 1: And that's not easy.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Can he He's put on some weight and he has
- 44:23Speaker 2: another year in the system, and like earn the opportunity
- 44:27Speaker 2: here early on to get more reps in camp, so
- 44:30Speaker 2: he's on the same page as Drake May and then
- 44:32Speaker 2: once that happens, put the whole thing together. That's where
- 44:35Speaker 2: I'm at with him, and to a lesser extent, I mean,
- 44:36Speaker 2: I think you could say all the same things about
- 44:37Speaker 2: Ftonism too. But you know, Kyle Williams is talking about
- 44:40Speaker 2: true playmaker again. He's never gonna be a high volume player.
- 44:43Speaker 2: It's not his role, it's not a skill set. But
- 44:46Speaker 2: I'm just interested to see it. Can he earn more
- 44:48Speaker 2: opportunities so he can get on the same page so
- 44:51Speaker 2: we don't have to do this whole thing again of well,
- 44:53Speaker 2: is he not on the same page or is he
- 44:54Speaker 2: just not good?
- 44:55Speaker 1: Because I think that's the question a lot of people
- 44:56Speaker 1: were asking last year on per I think that there's
- 44:59Speaker 1: so much raw talent there that you can see that
- 45:02Speaker 1: he's he's got in terms of like there's not a
- 45:05Speaker 1: whole lot of guys on this team, even with AJ
- 45:08Speaker 1: Brown that are like pure down the field separators like
- 45:12Speaker 1: AJ Brown is not that at this stage of his career.
- 45:14Speaker 1: AJ Brown's winning more at the catch point, like Kishan
- 45:17Speaker 1: Booty style on a lot of his vertical routes. Ideally,
- 45:21Speaker 1: if Kyle Williams takes that next step and you're in
- 45:24Speaker 1: third and eight and you're in a true passing situation
- 45:26Speaker 1: and you're eleven personnel, three receivers, you got this. You know,
- 45:30Speaker 1: Drake Mason the gun. You're spreading the field out like
- 45:33Speaker 1: wouldn't you want the third receiver to be somebody that
- 45:35Speaker 1: can truly get open and not maybe somebody that is
- 45:38Speaker 1: going to like win more contested like a Matt Collins
- 45:43Speaker 1: or if Booty's still here, or a smaller guy like
- 45:45Speaker 1: Pop or e f and Chisholm. So Kyle Williams, I
- 45:48Speaker 1: think there's a lot of opportunity there. You know, we
- 45:50Speaker 1: talk a lot about draft and develop, and I think
- 45:53Speaker 1: some people take draft and develop as in like draft
- 45:56Speaker 1: develop homegrown talent and keep homegrown talent On second and
- 45:59Speaker 1: third contracts. Part of drafting and developing is not having
- 46:03Speaker 1: to overpay for guys like Kaishan Boody r right where
- 46:05Speaker 1: you get right, So this is what they're trying to
- 46:08Speaker 1: do at other spots. You know, maybe guys that are
- 46:11Speaker 1: a little bit older than Kayshon Boody, but Morgan Moses
- 46:14Speaker 1: at right tackle with kayleb Blomu Hunter Henry and Eli
- 46:17Speaker 1: Riden like that, Gay Bacchus and Harold Landry like That's
- 46:20Speaker 1: what they're trying to do here as a true draft
- 46:23Speaker 1: and developed team is draft these guys a year ahead.
- 46:26Speaker 1: You're early and developed them. Kyle Williams was brought onto
- 46:29Speaker 1: the roster. He kind of brings something to the table
- 46:32Speaker 1: that other guys don't because the only other guy that
- 46:35Speaker 1: brings his kind of speed is Pop. But he's a
- 46:37Speaker 1: bigger guy than Pop. He's just got a bigger frame
- 46:39Speaker 1: than Pop Douglas does. So ideally, that's you know where
- 46:42Speaker 1: they're going with Kyle Williams. You just would like to
- 46:45Speaker 1: see a little bit more sharpness to the execution, a
- 46:50Speaker 1: little bit more crispness with him. All right, let's move
- 46:52Speaker 1: over to the defense. So a couple of things on
- 46:56Speaker 1: the defense that stood out to me obviously, No Carlton Davison,
- 46:59Speaker 1: no Gonzalez puts a wrench in your corner back. Yeah,
- 47:02Speaker 1: you know, rotation there, but it was good though.
- 47:04Speaker 2: I mean, a chance to see we know what those
- 47:06Speaker 2: guys are. Obviously got to get Conzalz's contract figured out,
- 47:08Speaker 2: we know what those guys are, yep. And really a
- 47:10Speaker 2: full rotation behind a Minor, Woods, Wilder, Prunty, and.
- 47:14Speaker 1: That's gonna be a battle.
- 47:16Speaker 2: I thought all those guys played well, but you know,
- 47:18Speaker 2: not having those top corners out, we really got a
- 47:20Speaker 2: full look at who's next.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah. So a lot of Kobe Minor, a lot of Vildor,
- 47:25Speaker 1: like you said, a lot of Prunty, a little bit
- 47:27Speaker 1: of Charles Woods out there too, but I think they
- 47:29Speaker 1: kind of feel like they know what they have. Charles
- 47:31Speaker 1: Woods and seeing those other guys there who stood out
- 47:35Speaker 1: to you in that group. But you know, obviously Prunty
- 47:37Speaker 1: had the pick. Prunty had the pick.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Woods had a really good pass breakup on Hunter Henry yep,
- 47:42Speaker 2: and then Vildor had a pass breakup on Pop Douglas.
- 47:45Speaker 2: So I thought, as much as you can evaluate corners
- 47:47Speaker 2: in a jog through I thought it was a good
- 47:49Speaker 2: day for that group, and we'll see again.
- 47:51Speaker 1: This is gonna be one of those battles. It's one,
- 47:53Speaker 1: maybe two spots. But I thought across the board was
- 47:57Speaker 1: impressed with their cornerback group today. Wildor was the one
- 47:59Speaker 1: guy that kind of stood out to me, not that
- 48:02Speaker 1: the others didn't have good practice, tell his experience compared
- 48:05Speaker 1: to the other guys. Yeah, And I feel like he
- 48:07Speaker 1: he has like a good frame to him, and he
- 48:09Speaker 1: looks like pretty calm out there. When you watch corners,
- 48:12Speaker 1: you just want to see guys. You know, the first
- 48:14Speaker 1: like step to me with watching corners is is there
- 48:17Speaker 1: a panic in their technique? Like do they trust their technique?
- 48:19Speaker 1: Do they trust their speed? Do they trust their athleticism.
- 48:23Speaker 1: He looked like he was kind of in control of
- 48:25Speaker 1: what he was doing out there, and that's probably comes
- 48:27Speaker 1: with experience and stuff like that. So I just thought
- 48:30Speaker 1: that he You know, when you get to at this point,
- 48:33Speaker 1: you know, you're two of Mike Rabel and you're two
- 48:36Speaker 1: of an off season where they're bringing in their own players,
- 48:39Speaker 1: you kind of know what the Patriots corner is supposed
- 48:42Speaker 1: to look like. You know, Kendallvilldor, you know, five eleven
- 48:45Speaker 1: one ninety like kind of just looks the part of
- 48:48Speaker 1: a Patriots corner at this point. Has got some size
- 48:51Speaker 1: to him, isn't you know? Five eight five nine. He's
- 48:54Speaker 1: got some size. He's got some you know, meat on
- 48:57Speaker 1: the frame, that sort of thing. I thought he stood
- 48:59Speaker 1: out the most, but I thought all of them were fine.
- 49:02Speaker 1: Like I didn't think anybody really did anything, and that
- 49:05Speaker 1: stood actually like wow, in this practice, in that position.
- 49:08Speaker 1: But the way he moves to do the most to me,
- 49:11Speaker 1: Marcella's dial who I still am not giving up on.
- 49:16Speaker 1: In general, he was limited still with the coming off,
- 49:20Speaker 1: Yeah he's gonna be So. The one other thing that
- 49:23Speaker 1: I thought was interesting, Mike Brown at safety was getting
- 49:27Speaker 1: a pretty good amount of run and especially you know,
- 49:30Speaker 1: they had some three safety nickel stuff that they were
- 49:33Speaker 1: doing with him alongside Woodson and Byered. When the Patriots
- 49:37Speaker 1: went regular heavy personnel on offense, they were matching that
- 49:41Speaker 1: without Marcus Jones at times on the field out of
- 49:44Speaker 1: that nickel spot Mike Brown. It kind of reminds me,
- 49:48Speaker 1: hopefully if it pans out of what happened with Jalen Hawkins.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Like I was saying this the other day, absolutely, like
- 49:54Speaker 1: Jalen Hawkins was not. He started a year in Atlanta,
- 49:57Speaker 1: right if I haven't, If I'm not mistaken, he played
- 49:59Speaker 1: a lot that year with the Falcons. But trenork is
- 50:02Speaker 1: the same thing. They did the same thing with Adrian Phillips. Still, Yeah,
- 50:04Speaker 1: but it wasn't. He wasn't a guy that was, you know,
- 50:07Speaker 1: more touted as like a depth player back into the roster,
- 50:10Speaker 1: special teams kind of guy comes to New England, carves
- 50:13Speaker 1: out a role for himself, ends up starting on a
- 50:16Speaker 1: team that made the Super Bowl. I'm not saying Mike
- 50:18Speaker 1: Brown's gonna start, because Woodson and Kevin Byerd are going
- 50:21Speaker 1: to start. But is there a chance that Mike Brown
- 50:25Speaker 1: could maybe I guess, elevate over del Pettis probably as
- 50:29Speaker 1: that true third safety and also give them some flexibility
- 50:31Speaker 1: to maybe play some three safeties. I hope.
- 50:33Speaker 2: So, I mean you've I want them to play more
- 50:36Speaker 2: three safety. I've talked about this, and he does have
- 50:39Speaker 2: the most defensive experience of anybody in that group. They
- 50:41Speaker 2: need someone to step up because they are kind of
- 50:42Speaker 2: thin there. If Mike Brown can be like a solid
- 50:44Speaker 2: rotational player, that'd be huge for them.
- 50:46Speaker 1: So at least giving it a look and seeing if
- 50:48Speaker 1: it works. I think it's smart. It feels a lot
- 50:50Speaker 1: like the Jalen Hawkins situation because Jalen Hawkins also like
- 50:54Speaker 1: kind of built up right to playing more with the Patriots.
- 50:57Speaker 1: Like Jalen Hawkins played a little bit his first year
- 51:00Speaker 1: with the Patriots and then played obviously a lot last year.
- 51:03Speaker 1: So just looking at Mike Brown, I think he played
- 51:06Speaker 1: a little bit last year if I'm not mistaken. Was
- 51:10Speaker 1: he was in Miami right or Tennessee, Tennessee. So he
- 51:15Speaker 1: played thirty six percent of the defensive snaps last year
- 51:18Speaker 1: in Tennessee. He played eighteen percent the year before Meg
- 51:22Speaker 1: Rabeles last year with the Titans in twenty twenty three,
- 51:25Speaker 1: So thirty six almost thirty seven percent isn't nothing like
- 51:29Speaker 1: that is some NFL experience, you know, for him with
- 51:33Speaker 1: the Titans, And I want to say Jalen Hawkins was
- 51:35Speaker 1: pretty similar in terms of like the build up from
- 51:38Speaker 1: being kind of a back end to the roster player,
- 51:41Speaker 1: just make the team special teams kind of guy and
- 51:44Speaker 1: then up to you know, a starting caliber player with
- 51:47Speaker 1: the Patriots. He might have played a little bit more
- 51:49Speaker 1: with Atlanta, so he played ninety one percent of the
- 51:53Speaker 1: snaps in Atlanta one year, and then his snapcount went
- 51:56Speaker 1: way back down the following year. I think he got
- 51:58Speaker 1: hurt with the Patriots. It's his first year. Jalen Hawkins
- 52:01Speaker 1: played fifty four percent of the snaps, so kind of similar,
- 52:04Speaker 1: and then he last year obviously ninety two percent, so
- 52:07Speaker 1: as a starter. So maybe something there with Mike Brown.
- 52:10Speaker 1: The other thing that stood out to me on defense
- 52:13Speaker 1: Corey Dirten. Corey Durden's a play like a guy that
- 52:16Speaker 1: they need to be a dude, and I think they
- 52:17Speaker 1: feel like they he might be.
- 52:18Speaker 2: I mean, Rabel got to ask before practice, like are
- 52:21Speaker 2: you looking for Corey Durton to step up this year?
- 52:23Speaker 1: Was like, I think he already has. Yeah, And yeah,
- 52:25Speaker 1: that's there.
- 52:26Speaker 2: He's the Tonga replacement. They felt pretty felt pretty clear
- 52:30Speaker 2: that that was the case.
- 52:31Speaker 1: It seemed like they felt, you know, we thought maybe
- 52:34Speaker 1: they would look at that this offseason to replace Kyris Tongo,
- 52:37Speaker 1: whether it was a draft pick or a free agent signing.
- 52:40Speaker 1: I think they kind of felt like they had Kyri's
- 52:41Speaker 1: Tonga at home, like they had a replacement with Corey Durden.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Four man fronts was you know pretty uh, all of
- 52:48Speaker 1: it was pretty shocked. But Draymond Jones, Milton Williams, Barmore
- 52:52Speaker 1: ponder when they went to those five man fronts like
- 52:55Speaker 1: a true three four, which they do on early downs
- 52:57Speaker 1: and you know, run situations things like that. It was
- 53:01Speaker 1: dirt in in between Milton Williams and Barmaope. That was
- 53:04Speaker 1: Tonga last year, so that was the Tonga roll splaining
- 53:07Speaker 1: and Ellis you know, obviously at the second level a
- 53:10Speaker 1: whole lot. I thought kJ Braid had a nice pass
- 53:12Speaker 1: breakup and then I think he might have left practice
- 53:14Speaker 1: early at the end, so that was kind of a bummer.
- 53:16Speaker 1: But yeah, he broke up a pass on a crossing
- 53:18Speaker 1: route to rear it in de Vito at quarterback. That
- 53:21Speaker 1: was a nice play. They need another guy that they
- 53:23Speaker 1: kind of need to emerge here. Yeah, I thought they were.
- 53:26Speaker 1: He looked good before. I think he might have gotten
- 53:29Speaker 1: hobbled up at the end of practice. We'll see if
- 53:30Speaker 1: he's out there next week. But they need that third
- 53:33Speaker 1: linebacker to step up. Was weird seeing Craig Woodson in four.
- 53:36Speaker 1: I didn't really like that. Yeah, not if it's still
- 53:39Speaker 1: not used to those single digits. It's also Draymond Jones
- 53:42Speaker 1: in five. Yeah, that was I don't like single digits
- 53:46Speaker 1: for pass rushers. Although Ju in the teens, I guess
- 53:49Speaker 1: Ju Don rocked the nine. There's always an exception. Judon was.
- 53:53Speaker 1: I mean, he was just swaggy in general, but he
- 53:55Speaker 1: seemed to really rock the nine pretty well, So maybe
- 53:58Speaker 1: maybe it will grow on me with the single it's
- 54:01Speaker 1: for Craig Woodson. Anything else on defense that I missed,
- 54:03Speaker 1: I think that was pretty much. It was pretty much.
- 54:06Speaker 1: It'd be interesting to see what happens with these corners.
- 54:08Speaker 1: You know, one of these guys is going to emerge.
- 54:10Speaker 1: I think Charles Woods is pretty much. I wouldn't say
- 54:13Speaker 1: it's a guarantee by any means that he's gonna make
- 54:15Speaker 1: the team, but is it like more probable than not
- 54:17Speaker 1: that he makes a team at this point. I think
- 54:20Speaker 1: that's what these next few practices will tell us. They
- 54:22Speaker 1: kind of set the stage for that. Yeah, I think
- 54:23Speaker 1: Vildor is the guy right now that I would say
- 54:25Speaker 1: is maybe got the best chance to be the fifth.
- 54:28Speaker 1: You know, if it's the top three obviously Gonzales, Davis,
- 54:31Speaker 1: Marcus Jones, Charles Woods, maybe the fourth guy, Kendall Vildor
- 54:35Speaker 1: is maybe the fifth guy. All right, So that was
- 54:37Speaker 1: our rundown to practice. I'm sure we have plenty of
- 54:40Speaker 1: calls and emails with questions about what we saw out there.
- 54:43Speaker 1: We're gonna take a quick break when we come back.
- 54:45Speaker 1: We also want to start our around the AFC East
- 54:48Speaker 1: series is a listener idea. A lot of listeners asked
- 54:51Speaker 1: us to do this, So we're gonna start with the
- 54:53Speaker 1: j E T S JE Jets Jets, then we're gonna
- 54:56Speaker 1: go through all the teams. I decided as to break up,
- 54:59Speaker 1: We're gon to save the bills for last, because we're
- 55:02Speaker 1: gonna argue about the bills. You know that we argued
- 55:04Speaker 1: about it last week, So I figured, let's put a buffer.
- 55:06Speaker 1: Argue about the bills. We argue not understanding how you want,
- 55:09Speaker 1: not understanding how a coint toss. Let's put a buffer
- 55:12Speaker 1: in between Bill's conversations, because I feel like it's not
- 55:16Speaker 1: good for anybody for us to double up on bills arguments.
- 55:19Speaker 1: So we'll do the bills in a couple of weeks,
- 55:21Speaker 1: but we'll take a quick break. We'll be right back.

- 59:17Speaker 1: you on a couple of emails here, Alex. So this
- 59:21Speaker 1: is from Chris and Florida. You thought you're making fun
- 59:24Speaker 1: of me for just judging people by their physique. Christen
- 59:28Speaker 1: wants to judge Drake May by his press conference today
- 59:30Speaker 1: after practice, so he said. He listened to the Drake
- 59:33Speaker 1: May press conference after practice today and has noticeably worked
- 59:37Speaker 1: on his interview skills. He removed saying yeah before answering
- 59:42Speaker 1: questions and slowed down his responses as well. He looks
- 59:45Speaker 1: and sounds more comfortable. So I did notice that the
- 59:49Speaker 1: yeas were gone, maybe just for today. I don't know
- 59:52Speaker 1: if that's gonna be an everyday thing. The one question
- 59:55Speaker 1: that I thought was really interesting that to go along
- 59:57Speaker 1: these lines of you know, judging these weird things. The
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: last question Tom Kurr and asked him, Yeah, that was
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: a good question about like being Drake May and I
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: think that that's something that maybe hasn't come supernaturally to
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: a kid from North Carolina that doesn't necessarily think of
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: it like that. And he said, you know, let's keep
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: it the same, Let's keep the routine the same, let's
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: keep the home life the same. And that's what he's
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: sort of doing and hoping for. But let's face it,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: like when you go runner up to the MVP and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you're like a few votes away from being the MVP
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: of the National Football League at twenty two years old,
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: twenty three years old runner up, you know, in the
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: entire league as the AFC champions and the losing the
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Super Bowl. He is now a superstar, Like there's no
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: doubt about that. Like he is now a absolute star
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: in this league, in a star athlete. It does change.
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: Not saying that it's changing his personality. I'm saying his
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: life has changed a lot. And how that you go
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: about handling that. Some guys handle it well, some guys don't.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: Not saying again that he isn't handling it well. But
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: I thought that was a really good question because it's
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: not something that we think about a lot, because we're
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: thinking so much about the x's and o's and the
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: way the games are played and the way he looks
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: on the practice field and stuff like that. Then there
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: was also the good exchange about how thick he's looking
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: two c's he's looking these days. But I thought that
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: was a good question by Tom because it's an interesting topic.
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: No, it's I mean, it's something you wonder like, how
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: is this going to change him? It's a fair question
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: for any anytime, any of these players really in any
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: sport breakout. You know, you get money, you get fame,
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: or he still is driven or you still as focused.
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: That kind of thing. So you know, it's one thing
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: to say it, it's another thing to do it. But
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: I thought he said all the right things. The other
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: thing that I thought, you know, along those same lines,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: just quickly, the fact that Milton Williams shows up to
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: these practices in the spring and is here all the
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: time and as present, that's a leader like Milton Williams
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: making thirty million dollars a year. He's the highest played
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: player on the team, at least for now. He's won
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: a Super Bowl and then went to a Super Bowl.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: Hasn't he been to three straight Super Bowls? Right? Yes,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: So there's no like Milton Williams is the perfect example
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: of the type of guy that on May twenty seven,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily need to participate in these practices and he's
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: out there, which I think says a lot about his
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: character and about his leadership to be a captain. I
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: think he might be a captain. That was where I
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: was going with that, Like, he wasn't a captain last year,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: first year with the team, first year with Mike Vrabel.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: You know some of the captains that were first year players,
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Splaine Landry, like those guys have been with Rabel, you know,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: in past stops. So maybe this year Milton Williams gets
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: the captaincy. This one's from Josh on some of the
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: contract extensions all. Just to answer this one this first
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: part quickly, Drake May's extension eligible next offseason, same kidence
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: as Christian Gonzales going into his fourth season in the NFL.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: That's also when his fifth year option decision would happen
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: to get taken care of as well. So Sam exact
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: cadence as what we just experienced with Gonzales. Uh, just
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: again going back to the Gonzales topic, which I do
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: think is probably the topic of the day. What are
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: your thoughts, Alex on the fact that Christian Gonzalaz isn't
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: signed yet and a money range that do you have
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: a range in mind that you would be comfortable with
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: signing him too? So what I gotta pull up the uh,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I'll pull I'll pull up. What about him not being
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: signed yet? It's not totally surprising.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: I feel like these things usually get done leading up
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: to training camp, from the first few days of training camp.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: I'd said that, I think going back that August one,
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: you know, is the day that you start to get
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: maybe a little uneasy about it, not even the start
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: of training camp, to start a padded practices. Yeah, you
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: know McDuffie got what do you get?
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: Four years? One hundred million? Yeah, So the contract that
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: I would look at if I was You're.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Probably looking at thirty two million a year, whatever the
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: length ends up being, You're looking at thirty two million
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: a year, which I would I would do that.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: So it's the market the contra that I would look
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: at if I was Gonzalez's camp, and then obviously adjust
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: it for the cap inflation and stuff like that. Derek
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Stingley with the Texans got a three year ninety million dollars.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: So that's thirty million per year. Ye h, forty eight
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: guaranteed at signing. So now you adjust that for the
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: fact that that was a couple of years ago and
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: the Cap is doing.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Duffee and saws both or mcduffee sorry's getting thirty one
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: million per that's the highest avy.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: So at the bare minimum, you're looking at beating mcduffe's
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: cond Yeah, and you're looking at at least fifty million guaranteed.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: So the only other question, and you know, I have
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: been on the camp of not being panicked about this
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: at all. Yeah, because I don't really think that there's
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: a real deadline to this type of thing yet, Like
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: he's under contract, well you have the fifty year option.
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Unless you're worried about it being a distraction, sure, but
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: I just mean, like he's not going anywhere right, Like,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: there's no it's not a situation where he's you know,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: he's not even technically on an expiring deal yet, you know,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: because of the team control that they have on him.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: So for that reason, I don't think the Patriots are
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: in any real hurry. I guess to put the money
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: out there because they don't need to be like and
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: as long as he isn't truly holding out. And it's
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: so rare nowadays that players actually hold out of games,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: like maybe hold out of practice, you know, in the
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: spring and stuff like that. But it gets to the
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: point where they're holding out of games. I'm still not
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: very concerned about the timing of this all yet. But
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: you also heard some whispers about Devin Witherspoon. Apparently the
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: Seahawks and Devin Witherspoon are miles apart. That's the same
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: draft class. Devin Witherspoon is drafted what like fifth or
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: sixth overall by Seattle that year, and Gonzales was seventeenth
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: by the Patriots, same draft class, highly touted players, two
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: players that have more than hit, you know, in terms
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: of the talent, and Devin Witherspoon. I guess the reporting
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: out of Seattle is that the Seahawks and Devin Witherspoon
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: are pretty far apart right now and where they're at.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: I guess Seattle made an initial offer to Devin Witherspoon,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: and Devin Witherspoon didn't like it too much. So that's
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: kind of where they're at too. So to an extent,
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: it's like, well, the Witherspoon thing is not done either, right,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: So if you if you're starting to worry about timing
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: and are they dragging their feet on it? Are they
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: not going to pay him, like you could say all
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: the same things about Seattle. They haven't paid Witherspoon yet either, right,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: So until that Witherspoon contract comes in ahead of Gonzalez's,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I tend not to be too.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Less and less Gonzalz is okay signing first, and that's
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: advantage Patriots if he is, Yeah, because I mean that
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: throws a wrench into the Witherspoon negotiations. Whoever signed second
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: is getting more money. Yeah, But it also, you know,
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: waiting comes with the insecurity of not knowing.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Yep. So this is a question that's more like a
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: big picture question. Let's go to this one from Destiny
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: and Peboty. This is a good question. She asked, what
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: did Jared Wilson's snaps look like today at practice? That's
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: true last year and she points this out, and he
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: points it out that last year he struggled a little
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: bit snapping the football in practice. Now it's one practice,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: it's passing camp. So it wasn't a ton of under
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: center work. I didn't notice anything about the snaps. I
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: thought all the snaps looked fine. So if I'm not
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: noticing that the snaps are over his head or at
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: his you know, on his shoelaces or wide, or you'd
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: notice it, right if if they had all these snaps
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: last year. Though, it's a good point Destiny last year
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: that the snaps were notable, Like it was notable that
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: he wasn't snapping the ball. Great, and the next thing
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: we know, he's playing left guard. You know they're moving.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: I would say nothing, nothing out of control. There was
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: one that was like low issu. It was like kind
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: of at his knees that May was able to go get.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but it was it wasn't egregious like that kind
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: of snap happens four or five times a game.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: Besides that, nothing in the ground, nothing over his head,
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: nothing that he had to leave his stance to get,
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: which is really what you're looking for.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, so that was a good question. You want
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: to talk about the Jets. Talked a little a little
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: bit about the Jets and around the lady. How much
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: is there say about the Jets that the Jets. Yeah,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I know, I know we're doing the segment, but so
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: we're gonna go around in the AFC. We're gonna do
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Jets Dolphins bills over the next couple of weeks. In
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: the second hour of the show, you said, you just
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: now are just mocking the Jets a little bit, where
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: you're not. Of course you're mocking the Jets little bit.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: That's fine. It's allowed. Totally allowed. Am I allowed to
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: kind of like what they're doing in a vacuum like
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: long term? Yes? Sure, So here's the thing about the Jets.
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: But that requires them to lose many games this year. Okay,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: but here's the thing about the Jets. I actually really
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: like the moves that they've made this offseason. I think
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: that they really had a good draft. I mean, just
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: looking at their draft picks. Obviously they're all high because
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: of they had a bad team, so they put the
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: second overall, but David Bailey, Kenyan, sadik Omar Cooper, junior
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: D'Angelo Ponds in the top fifty of the draft. They
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: got to you know, they traded the players, so you
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: have to put that out there, you know, Sace card
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: In Quentin Williams. That's losing a lot of talent, but
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: the halls that they got for both those players gave
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: them a bunch of draft picks moving forward, right, you
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: know they have three first round picks in twenty twenty seven. Yeah,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: that a lot of people think is going to be
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: a generational type of draft. They have three first round
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: picks in that draft, and they think they have an
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: extra pick in twenty twenty eight as well from that
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: those trades too. Darren Moogie, their general manager, I actually
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: think has navigated this pretty well. I was always of
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: the school thought with the Jets that there was a
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: lot of buzz, especially like in the Robert sala era,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: about how much roster talent the Jets had, but it
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: never translated to any wins. And I thought at some
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: point in time you had to look at it and say,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: Quentin Williams and Sauce Gardner are great players, but we're
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: not winning any games with those two guys. It's just
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: not translating to wins. On top of that, especially with
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: Quinn Williams, less so maybe with Sauce because he's younger.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Are and Williams and Sauce Garden are realistically going to
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: be a part of a great Jets team. Like, are
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: they in a window right? Where are they going to
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: be in a window where they were going to be
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: able to capitalize having those two guys at their prime?
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: So what do they do? They flipped them for picks.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: I thought they had a good draft this year. They
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: have three first round picks next year. I actually kind
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: of like what they did defensively. They went out in
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: free agency a lot like the Patriots and paid a
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: lot of guys in free agency. They have eight new
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: starters projected starters on the defensive side of the ball.
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: They made the Devondre Sweat trade, who we both liked
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: that player, you know, a guy that wasn't a fit
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: to their system going down to Tennessee to rejoin Sala
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: and they get Sweat tomorrow. Davis, I think, is a
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: pretty good player at linebacker. All these compliments that I'm
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: handing the Jets, uh all fall by the wayside because
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: of the Big three. They still don't have a quarterback,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: they still don't have a head coach, and they still
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: don't have a great owner. So they could bake all
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: these great moves around the fringes and I can love
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: their draft, and I can love the way that they're
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: set up for the future, but that doesn't change the
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: fact that Gino Smith right now is going to be
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: their quarterback. I'm still not entirely sold on Aaron Glenn
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: and I also thought that he made some peculiar staff decisions. Yeah,
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: coming off of his first year with the Jets, and
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Woody Johnson is Woody.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: John's They're set up well, They're set up very well,
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: but they're the Jets. They have to stick the landing
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: and are they gonna do that?
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: Let me ask. I had a very interesting conversation with
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Mike Catholck today of practice. Nice, I'm trying to think.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Did you watch any of the Texas or no, Cincinnati.
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: You did watch the Cincinnati receivers in the draft, so
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: you can kind of answer that.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: Cyrus All.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, So Brendan Soresby was Cincinnati's quarterback last year. Yes,
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: he was one of the top transfers in the portal
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: this year. People thought he was gonna be a first
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: round pick. He then got suspended for gambling, and I
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: mean it was a lot. He went to rehab for it,
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: he completed the program. He tried to get reinstated. It
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: just came out the other day the NCAA would not Reinstada,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: so he is now probably it's been he could. I
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: haven't seen exactly where he stands on this. The supplemental
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: draft is back Evan. There's not been a supplemental draft
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: pick since I think twenty seventeen because usually.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: There needs to be players that want to be in
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: the supplements.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: Right, and then Nils kind of thrown the supplemental draft
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: out the window. This is a rare instance where could
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: take place. So the way the supplemental draft works for
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: people who don't know, and I probably was gonna bring
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: this back to the Jets.
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: It's not like you're just on the board and you pick.
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: How it works is players declare for it, Teams get
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: a list, you put in a bid of a draft
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: round on that player, and whoever has the highest bid
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: gets the player. And if there's a tie, it's not
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: exactly the reverse standings, but based on the number of wins,
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: teams are put into tiers, and I think it's like
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: randomized within the tiers or something like that.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: It's a little confusing, but the Jets would be in
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: good position.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: So Adam Schefter reported that and this soars b who
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: threw twenty seven touchdowns five picks last year led Cincinnati
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: a seven to five record. He had another eight hundred
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: and fifty yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Dual
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: threat guy. I think NFL size yeah, six three, two
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: thirty five. Adam Schefter reported that there could be second
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: round bids on Brendan Soresby if he goes to the
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: supplemental draft. The Jets have three first round picks. Yes,
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: should the Jets get crazy aggressive? And now, I don't
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: know if you can bid your if it has to
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: be your own pick, you bid, or if you can
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: bid somebody else's. But if you're the Jets, do you
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: consider bidding a first round pick on Brendan Soresby. Some
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: people said he would have been a first round pick
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: if he came out in this draft. And you now
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: you get the quarterback, and maybe it takes some time.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: To eat him in.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: You're not gonna get him till the you know he's
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: gonna miss the old spring, you're not gonna get to
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: the start training camp, but you have him. Quarterback classes
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: only get worse, they never get better. As the aeros
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: on they only get worse. You have the guy you
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: got him. I think you pay him less too. I'm
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: just trying to build this up with some dramatic thing
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: because it's an interesting, unique situation. It is from what
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: you remember watching soores be when watching Cyrus Allen. Should
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: the Jets consider bidding a second, if not a first
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: round pick to get him in the supplemental draft?
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: I mean, I I'd probably give to be willing to
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: go with the Day three pick or Day two pick,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: because you're probably gonna take him in that range of
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: the draft anyways. I would think, I don't know if
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: he's the first round talent, yeah, but he might be
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: a Day two talent. So if you're gonna if you
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: felt comfortable drafting him in the second or third round,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: maybe not at the top of the second round where
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: the Jets are going to be picking, but in somewhere
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: let's say, let's call it, you know, eighty five, right
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: like in the middle of there, seventy five something like that,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: then I mean, why not you know, the two biggest
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: well CHEFT are saying that there might be second round bids, okay,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: but second round bids for teams that are picking at
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: the end of the second round are different than teams
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: are picking at the end of the second round bidding
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: on a quarterback in the supplemental draft. I guess it
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: depends on what they're not the Rams Draft. It's something
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: right well there. I don't know if there's a team
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: like the Rams. I can't think off the top of
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: my head. No, I think the teams trying to get
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: a quarterback. I think it's teams that are trying to
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: get a quarterback now versus like they don't want to
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: have to go through the process, the pre draft process,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: and here's a chance to get a guy and we
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: can just get him and not have to do that
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: whole thing. So according to Wikipedia, which is off of
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: sort yeah, but this is the only one that has
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: a great list. Twenty nineteen was the last time that
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: a supplemental draft pick was used. Jalen Thompson, the safety
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: from Washington State, got drafted by Arizona the Cardinals. The
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: in our lifetimes, in our times, there's only a couple
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: of players that were decent. The two big ones are
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: Josh Gordon and Terrell Prior Prior. Tarrell Prior is kind
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: of the comp here. What was the bid on Tell Prior.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: Torell Prior was drafted in the supplemental draft in the
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: third round. Okay, Josh Gordon was a second round pick. Yeah,
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: I remember that. So Terrell Prior, though, was originally drafted
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: as a quarterback and then eventually became a wide receiver,
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: but he was.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Drafted as a quarterback, so he was drafted as a quarterback. So,
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: and by the way, here's how it works. So teams
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: get divided in three groups, teams with six or fewer
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: wins the year before, non playoff teams, more than six
- 1:16:04Speaker 2: wins in playoff teams, and then the order within those
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: groups is determined by a weighted lottery system, giving advantage
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: to the team with the fewer wins. So the Jets
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: will be favorable if you really believe in the rest
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: of the roster, I'd consider it.
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: If I was the Jets. Everything you've tried has failed?
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: Why not? Well, so, I don't know if I believe
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: in the rest of the roster for twenty twenty seven. Okay,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: I would also say I have no belief whatsoever in
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: the coach, and I'm actually no reporting or anything, but
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: just on the outside looking in, I actually thought there
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: was a chance that that Aaron Glenn was gonna be
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: one and done, and I think he kind of in
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: a way scape goed his offensive coordinator, which I thought
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: was kind of bogus because, you know, just watching their film,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: which I had to do unfortunately, you know twice a
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: year Tanner Extran and the way that they designed that offense,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: especially early on in the season with Justin Fields, that
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: was like the best thing the Jets had going last year.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: I felt like, I actually thought, especially early and they
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: had that big game against Pittsburgh and the opener and
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: I openers are wonky, but Justin Field was running all
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: over the place. I actually thought that Tanner Enstran did
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: some interesting things and did a good job. Aaron Glenn
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: fired him. They fired him, They replaced him with Frank Reich,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: who Frank Reik hasn't been a great play caller in
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: a while. Like Frank Reich had his heater with the Eagles,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: it goes to the Colts, the Panthers, like had a
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: maybe a decent run with Indianapolis, if you want to
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: call it that, for a period of time. But the
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Frank Reich thing kind of wore off, right, And I
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: think the one thing with Frank Reich with Aaron Glenn
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: is that he's an experienced coordinator. It's kind of like
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: having an experienced guy like McDaniel's right, where you have
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: this young head coach who's probably in over his head
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: a little bit, and now you have a coordinator like
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: Frank Reich who has been there, done that, and knows
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: what he's doing. But at the same time, I felt
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: like eng Strand was like the one guy that was
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: doing something schematically that I felt like, we're kind of
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: innovative and cool and actually gave put defenses in some
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: binds and like made it difficult to defend them at times.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: A went off the rails, you know, And obviously they
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: had had the role for the season that they had
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: and that's who it was. Aaron Glenn's a defensive coach.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: I think the big thing when they inherited the Jets
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: when when Glenn did and this was my take when
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: they traded Sauce Gardner. Aaron Gunn wants to play with
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: an identity like Aaron Glenn's a lot in a way,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: kind of like Mike Rabol in terms of like former player.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: He wants to play with like a toughness, with a
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: chip on his shoulder type of mentality. As a team,
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: he wants corners that are aggressive. He wants corners that
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: can press and play man to man. He wants corners
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: that tackle. He wants aggressive football players. I did not
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: just describe Sauce Gardner like that's you know, Sauce Gardner
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: is a good player, don't get me wrong, but he's
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: more of like a finesse zone kind of corner Aaron Glenn.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: You know, he's perfect and like a Robert Sala Seattle
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: three kind of system. Perfect corner for that. That's not
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: what Aaron Glenn wants to run, Like, that's not the
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: defense he wants to run. So they did, like I said,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: they changed over a lot of the players on defense. Uh,
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: they make these big trades like maybe they're trying to
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: build a defense in Aaron Glenn's sort of eyes or identity.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Uh to your quarterback question, it's all relates back to
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: me with the Jets on is Aaron Glenn going to
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: be there or not? You know, is he the coach?
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: Do you believe in the coach? And maybe you know,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: look it worked with if Drake made persevered and if you're.
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: The GM because it's a GM decision in terms of
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: sores By specifically, if you believe Soresby's the guy and
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: you can get them, like, if you believe in him,
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: if you're willing to make that kind of investment in
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: a quarterback, I would guess you believe he can work
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: with any coach you believe that he is not, You're
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: not even if it's second round bid. You're not bidding
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: a second round pick on Brendan Soarsby because you think
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: he's a great fit with tannering Strand sure you're bidding
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: on him because you think he's a really good quarterback
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: and whoever the OC is is going to be able
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: to make it work with him.
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: So it just be does the GM believe in him
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: or not? That's would have come down to to me.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: So you know the other thing too, I knew, you know.
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: I talked a little bit more about the OC. They
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: fired their defensive coordinator too. Steve Wilks is out, Brian
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: Duger's in, so they changed coordinators under Glen That was
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: the move because really bad season for the Jets. MOGI
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: looks like he knows what he's doing a little bit though.
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: Their general manager, I feel like has a good feel
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: for it. I certainly thought he drafted well and I
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: thought he got really good returns on the two trades
- 1:20:39Speaker 1: that they made. I just underneath him on the letterhead,
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: I just don't know, or really above or underneath if
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: you want to throw Whatody Johnson into this, like, I
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: just don't really know if they have the power structure
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: that's going to work out. And obviously not planning on
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: Geno Smith bouncing back, but I guess if you could
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: get Seattle Gino, I just you know, I don't know
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: if they have the weapons the infrastructure for that. But
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: they have the two tackles Membu and Olufushanu. They now
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: have Omar Cooper Junior and Garrett Wilson. If you know,
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: I'm still holding out. I hope that Adam I'm Mitchell's
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: gonna figure out how to catch the ball. You know,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: he's really good up until he has to catch the ball.
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: Mason Taylor, Kenyon, Sadik Breese Hall in the backfield. No,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: they've got some good pieces. It's just the quarterback. Am
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: I crazy? Last Jets take and then we'll move on.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Am I crazy to like the Jets pat to a
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: rebuild more than the Dolphins because I like the Jets.
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: What the Jets have done significantly more than the Dolphins,
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: and I feel like they're both in the same boat.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: I feel like the Dolphins are trying to straddle going
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: to the bottom to reset versus being competitive. Well, I
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: feel like the Jets have owned Hey, we're gonna suck
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: for a couple of years and build it back up.
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: I think the Jets have a clearer direction. Yeah, I
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: don't know what the Dolphins are doing. We'll talk about
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: that the Dolphins, Dolphins. I don't know what the Dolphins
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: are doing. They're all over the place. That's an interesting one. Now,
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Paris Campbell retired. Really, I was a big Paris Campbell
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: guy back in the day. Paris Campbell's not that old.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: Dallas Cowboys public relations the Dallas Cowboys have moved wide
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: receiver Paris Campbell to the reserve retired list.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: He's been in the league for a bet. I mean,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: he can't be that old. He's only twenty eight, yeah,
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: twenty nine next month. He's got some injuries.
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: Though.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: I was a Paris Campbell guy too. I thought, yeah,
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: just like speed, you know, across the field, explosiveness, maybe
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: a gadget player could win. Yeah, you know, jet sweeps
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: and around. You're gonna hate this too, but he was
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: really good and Madden, well, I can see that as
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: Bethel Johnson. All Right, this is a long email from
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Barton Poland, but it's making fun of you, so I'm
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: gonna run it anyway. So last week we had a
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: very big argument on this show about the Bills naturally
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: and about coin flips. Apparently, and Barton Poland said the
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: last week, bar seem genuinely outraged by the idea that
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: someone could believe the Patriots would split the two games
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: with the Bills are also not viewing either matchup as
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: a true coin flip game. But you absolutely can. That's
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: just simple probability. The statistics no I was using probability.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: Let's say you believe the Bills have a seventy percent
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: chance to beat the Patriots at home, in other words,
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: if they played one hundred home games. Then let's say
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: you don't see the Patriots home game as a coin
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: flip and gave the Bills a high as high as
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: a sixty percent chance to win in New England, we
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: got chance of Bills sweeping both games seventy percent sixty
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: percent equals forty two percent. Patriots sweep both games thirty
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: percent times forty percent equals twelve percent. Do you honest
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: ask jeez math? I know this is hard, right? That
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: makes no sense?
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: Like there's a great significantly greater if you believe it's
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: significantly greater than fifty percent chance that the Bills win
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: both games, you are expecting them to sweep. I think
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: that that is a fine launch line. Do you think
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: it is more likely or not? You think it's more
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: like that the Bills win both games? But Bart nails this,
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: and I know that this type of math is hard.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: I don't want to multiply fraction.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: I stand there. Understand that you're you know this is
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: hard for you. You view the Bills as heavy favor
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: as heavy favorites in both games. You think it would
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: take a significant upset for the Patriots to win one
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: of those games? Yes?
- 1:24:10Speaker 8: Or no?
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: A significant upset? No, but means that it's a coin flip. No,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: a coin flip is fifty to fifty fifty five, it's
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: a little room, not exactly fifty to fifty. That's not
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: a coin flip. Well, the problem was and the probability
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: that it lands on heads or tails is literally.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: Okay, So now we've gone the complete other direction. Last week,
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: the coin flip one was too close for your liking.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: Now it's too narrow, like the problem when you didn't
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: want to use my categories because you didn't want to
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: put it.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: Yeah, they're probably going to lose that game category on there. No,
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: I'm telling you that I had five categories that set
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: one of them that both of them aren't coin flips.
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: Bart just laid out the math for you, maybe show Maybe.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: You're a visual corn and I don't care about multiplying fractions.
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: I don't. That's care. That's probability talking about it in
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: that literal of a set. This is the problem with
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: the analytics. You do it in such a literal sense.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: It doesn't work that way. Yes it does. The coin
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: game are the most evenly competitive games on the schedule.
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: Do you believe Patriots and Bills, at least the one
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: here is an evenly competitive game? No, you don't. You
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: said this in as many words less I think you don't.
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be a tough game. You don't
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: think they're competitive. You do not think the Patriots can
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: compete with the bills. You don't think that. That's what
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: you said last week. That's what you're saying now we're
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: going to argue about the bills today. You just know
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: you just have to have your bills moment. You can't
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: get over them. I said, we weren't going to argue,
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: and then you started multiplying percent because bar lays it
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: out a good job for doing the math part. I
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: don't split the seven. A split is seventy times forty
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: percent plus thirty times sixty percent, which equals forty six percent,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: meaning the most likely outcome is a split, even though
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: I think it's less than a coin flip.
- 1:25:58Speaker 3: This.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: I created the categories for the exercise we were doing.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: The coin fild category was these are the most evenly
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: matched games on their schedule. I take Bills, Sweet Bills
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: game here, for I think the Bills game here Patriots
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: changing the percent you're changing splitting games forty six percent,
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: which is the higher one of those percentages the split,
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: So the highest probability is still a split.
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: I don't care about the literal multiplying of the fractions.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: That's the category.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: But I'm telling you the categories were the most evenly
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: matched games do is Patriots Bills an evenly matched game?
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Yes? Or no? No you think no, you think no,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: this is my point. Not yet, I gotta see it again.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: So you think the Bills should win both games? No,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: I think that if it's if it's not even the match,
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: then the Bill should win. I still think that what
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: Bart said is accurate. Maybe I don't think that most
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: flight outcome is a spy came up. I came up
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: with the exercise the category split, as Bart perfectly laid out.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: See like, I'm one of those types of people that
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: I'm bad at math, but I'm good at understanding numbers,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: if that makes sense. He had nothing to do with
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: the numbers. I could not do like. I couldn't have
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: explained the way Bart explained it. I would have butchered
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: it last week if I tried to do that myself.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: But now that he's laid it out for us in
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: the way that I was thinking in my head, I'm like, exactly,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: So he was one sixty percent to win the other
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: correct for the Bills, which which means that is split.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: If you're the most money both of those games. If
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: I'm putting money on, I probably put the Patriots. I
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: probably bet the Bills in both games, so you think
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: it's most likely that the Bills win both games. Who
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: would you? I still all I said, just laid it
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: out for you perfectly. I don't know. For the last time,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: I don't care about the literal math. You don't actually
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: care about the facts.
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: Because I told you what I told you categories were,
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: and you tried to redefine them.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: Yes, I did. That's a you problem because my categories
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: were better. You had too many categories. You had like
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: six categories.
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: I had five categories strong, yes, slight yes, middle, slight
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: note strong. No, that's how like every that's how you
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: do categories. That's too many you you all the nose
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: together and you turned the middle into a no.
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: You completely threw Thank you for understanding. How like it's
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: really sometimes it's hard for me because like I'm not
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: good at math, and I know that, like my logic
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: is sound, but I can't articulate it. Your sound if
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: you believe with that, like I need like you know,
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: to like write it down or something. And then bart
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: just emailed that in imperfectly encapsulated in my thought, your logic.
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: Is sound if you believe the Bills are defendive are
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: definitively better than the Patriots.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: I do not believe that. I hope you're right. I
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: still feel I think they're close. I think their neck
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: and neck, I think they're close. I'm not saying the
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: Bills are world better. They're close than the Bills.
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: Aren't definitively better than the Patriots. And you're jumping this line.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: I don't think the Patriots. You don't want to pick
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: the Bills to sweep. I don't publicly because the probability
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: is the most the most likely outcome is still a split,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: as Bart just laid out.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: All right, Alex, let me ask you this man. Yeah,
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: so in the red zone, who is more likely to
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: punch it in? Is it the Bills of the Patriots?
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: Because at the Bills Patriots game it's gonna come down
- 1:29:26Speaker 4: to a red zone play in the red zone, who
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: is more likely to make it happen?
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: You?
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: Well, okay, Well will the Patriots run? Drake made more
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: in the red zone this year, but it is probably the.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Day they did it. Actually in the Bills game, the
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: second Bills did that was a big difference.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Well, will the Bills get down there or will they
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: turn the ball over multiple times as they did in
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: the first matchup.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: My whole turnovers in red zone, that's what the Bills
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: and my whole thing with the Patriots and the Bills
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: and the Patriots in general is that I think last year,
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: and I'm not doing the easy sc thing. I'm not
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: going there, but I think last year they kind of
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: caught lightning in a bottle in the sense of, like
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: all the vibes were off the charts and everything worked,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: and every button Mike Rabel pushed, yeah, and every signing
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: and draft pick they made, yeah, all of it worked. Yep.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: So I don't think they need all of it to
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: work again because I think they have some foundational pieces,
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: like we wanted we added to our list of offseason shows,
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: the Daniel Jeremiah thing of do you have these twelve things?
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: But I still feel like I need to see them
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: do it again. All right, So the Bills have been
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: doing it since twenty nineteen, twenty five, six years in
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: a row that they've been a relevant So we're going
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: off the vibes. We're going off the vibes. How are
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: the Bills vibes this offseason? Terrible?
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: Terrible, terrible, And you know who else was They're terrible?
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: You know who else was really good in twenty nineteen?
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: The uh, the New Orleans Saints were thirteen and three.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: Twenty nineteen was a long time.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: Ago, Evans. I'm saying this is the Chiefs. The Chiefs
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: were very cooking about how good they were in twenty nineteen.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: I'm talking about sustainability, right.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: They are regressing, they might be, they're actively regressing they
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: might last year. They're actively reciting. The Bills have been
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: good for longer than the Patriots, I think actually hurts
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: your argument.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: It doesn't. It's a proven commodity. It's a team that
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: is has shown that they're in and year out. That
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: would Josh Allen ad But they've gotten a reseature the
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: last two years, a ten plus win team. But what's there?
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Are the bills? But but are the bills?
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: We talk about this a lot, the undercurrent of the NFL,
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: and it's designed to make the good teams bad and
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: the bad teams good.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: But if you have even let me finish, Let me finish,
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: let me finish.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: You have a five year window. We talk about like
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: it's it's supposed to be a five year cycle.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: The bills are you.
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: Nineteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty, twenty three, twenty four. We're on
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: year eight of that cycle. Are the Bills that special?
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: Are the Bills that special? They're going to double up
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: the cycle? Is Joe Brady that special? Are the players
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: on the rock st around Josh Allen that special? Or
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: are they going to continue to get hit with regression?
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Okay? But here's the problem. What's regression to them? Like,
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: as long as Josh Allen's healthy, Let's take that out
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: of it, right, because if with any team yet has
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: a quarterback like that, if he gets hurt, then it's
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: all what's regression to them? They went from thirteen wins
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: last year to twelve, right, call it eleven? Okay? So
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: they're still an eleven win team that.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Get okay, and you're willing to guarantee that two of
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: those are against the Patriots.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I didn't guarantee. You're saying guarantee. I never said guaranteed.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: The probability is that they still split. But you're actively
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: you're talking about the Bills. It's fine, there's nothing to
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: see here. What's his name? And I'm not talking about.
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: A naked gun Leslie Nielson in top gun. There's it's fine,
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: there's nothing to see here. Return to your homes. The
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: Buffalo Bills are as good as ever.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: But with the New England Patriots, who just went to
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: the super Bowl, well, I have some real questions. They
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: have some real questions from this offseason that they need
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: to answer. All I'm saying it's one or the other.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: I think they both have questions you. But you cannot
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: sit here and say, oh, is good, there's nothing to
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: worry about the Buffalo Bills. That's an insane take. I
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: first of all, I never said there's nothing to worry about.
- 1:33:08Speaker 3: It is.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: You've said two things the last time minutes we sustainable.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: I see them do it. I know what they are right,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: trust them. There's nothing You said that I guaranteed that
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: the Bills were going to win both, which I never did.
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: You also said that I said nothing was wrong when
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: you asked me what the vibes were with the Bills,
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: and I said they were terrible. But yet I've said
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: that you're nothing wrong. There's no real questions about the Bills.
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: I didn't say there's no real questions. I said, what
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: does their regression look like? Realistically? If Josh Allen's in
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: one piece and is healthy. Then at worst, what are
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: they like an eight win team? Nine to ten? Yeah?
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: Round if the Patriots last year, if they truly were
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: a paper tiger, Yeah, okay, their regression from fourteen wins
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: is a lot harder than the base. The Patriots should
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: not lose.
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: They might lose, their win total might go down by
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: more wins than the Bills, but they're starting from a
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: higher point, right, So let's say they both go to ten.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: You would say the Patriots regressed more, which is fine.
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: But then they're even, which is what I've been saying.
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: I think they are the pat I don't think the
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: Patriots have like a four wind floor. It's this is
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: literally my and this is I think the Patriots and
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: Bills floor is relatively similar.
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: This isn't even a Bills things. Just talking specifically about
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: the Patriots. My one concern about the Patriots is something
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: that I hate talking about normally, and it is literally
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: just vibes like their team last year, you know all
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: of the little gimmicky things, you know, warriors like road warriors,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: let's join the mile high Club in Denver, Let's you know,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: all these little like rabel isms that he used, and
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: that he that they motivated the team and they rallied
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: behind all these different elements that they used last year
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: to inflate their win total, Like that needs to work
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: all over again.
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: Well, that's where you talk about the culture and the program,
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: and that's why you hired Mike Vrabel.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: If Mike Rabel like can replicate that again. And I
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: think Mike Reese asked him about this at the owners
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: meetings and said, like, do you spend time thinking about
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: we can't do these things the same exact way, And
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: he said, I spend a lot of time thinking about that.
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: And that's what I really like. Where their roster is.
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: I actually think that their roster is significantly improved even
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: from last year, especially if we're sitting here in a
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: week and AJ Brown is also on this team. Ye, Like,
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: I think that they have a really good roster. Defensively,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: I think that they have a chance to be a
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: top ten defense, maybe even higher than that, if they all,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: you know, kind of play to their potential on that
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: side of the football. It's the one thing that I
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: had talked to the least about. I would say, it's
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: not analytical, it's not x's and oo's, it's literally just
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: feel okay, now do the same thing for the Bills.
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: Are the Bills vibes? The Bills vibes are terrible. And
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: I think the Bills, actually, I would argue defensively, they
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: probably have more holes than the Patriots do. They have
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: more issues with their roster than the Patriots do. I
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: just have a lot of respect for the quarterback. And
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: I know that bothers you, but that's just like, just
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: why don't you have that kind of respect for the
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: quarterback here? Because he hasn't been doing a run half
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: a decade. He's better last year, he's younger, he just
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: hasn't been doing it for as long. Like it's the
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: same thing as Josh Allen turned thirty. Man Like at
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: a certain point, you know he turned thirty. We just
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: quarterbacks are playing now until the late thirties. Like he's
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: not guys to play like that. I mean maybe, but
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: he's Like I just I look at Josh Allen as
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: as more of a proven commodity right now than Drake
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: May And I don't know how you.
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: Can more of a proven commodity. But I don't think
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: there's this crazy gap. I think they're close. I think
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: the team I think I don't know if you think
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: single handedly, Josh Allen is going to beat the Patriots.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: No, I think that's Josh Allen is like slaying a dragon.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: And it's not going to be easy whenever you play
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: that team, whether it's here or there, to beat them,
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: because they have a great quarterback, just like it wasn't
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: easy for twenty years to beat this team.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: Because but that doesn't mean it's not an evenly matched game.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: We've seen Mahomes struggle mightily with deficient rosters. We've seen
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson and.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: Joe didn't want to do this today, I really did.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: I just so Josh Allen is immune to the lesser
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: than roster, but none of the other great quarterbacks are.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: No, he's not immune to it. But I think that
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: there's a floor to his team as long as he
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: is healthy. That I don't think they're gonna totally stink
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: as long as he is I don't think they're going
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: to be like they're not going to miss the playoffs. Okay,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: so then what are we talking about here? Would it
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: be crazy if the Patriots win A and nine missed
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: the playoffs.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: I think they have the same floor. No, I just again,
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: I think that you're talking about those games like they're
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: non competitive. I think that they're I think they're evenly matched.
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: I think the Patriots and Bill I think twenty twenty six,
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: the Patriots and Bills are evenly matched football teams.
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: You disagree, Yeah, I would still give you a slight
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: edge to Buffalo, But we'll see. We'll see how it goes.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: By the the Chiefs are six and eight last year
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: when Mahomes got hurt. Yeah, the Chiefs, the Chiefs fell out.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: Is Allan's floor lower than Sorry's, mahomes slower lower than Allen?
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: I do think. I think Kansas City's roster fell apart more.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: I think I think their roster fell apart more. They
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: think they're about where the Bills are right now, I don't.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: I think defensively probably edge Kansas City, but offensively around
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: Mahomes like Mahomes didn't have a run game like Buffalo
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: does that they can lean on. I guess like that.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: That's such a big element to it for me with
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: Buffalo that makes them hard to play is they can
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: put the quarterback under center with a great offensive line
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: and a good running back and run it. I mean,
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: that's how they got back in the game line. That
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: is nothing to do with rush Allen. I shouldn't say that.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: It doesn't really there. It just has a. It has
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: a It gives them a crutch, like it gives them something.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Mahomes thrown a juju and taekwon last year. Yeah, it's bad,
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. Like Dj Moore and Khalil Shakira
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: and Dalton Kincaid is better than that, I guess. Yeah,
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:39:01Speaker 2: I I think they both have like an eight wind floor.
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: Of the Patriots in the Bills, I think they're similar.
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: I think it's competitive. That's just where I'm at.
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: I think that they're I just give a slight edge
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: the Buffalo, that's all and as it has really nothing
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: else to do other than like, I just want to
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: see the Patriots do it again before I start crowning
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: them the kings of the a FCS. My whole point
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: is I'm not crowning anybody. I think it's neck and neck.
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: You know, last year there was a significant difference between
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: the schedules of the team teams played. There won't be
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: this year.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Well, I need to see the Bills stave off for
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: the regression before I king them that's fair.
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: There you go. See, we come back around and we
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: settle it till next look at look at how nice
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: we are. Now, all right, let's get back to the phones.
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: Eldred's in North Carolina. What's up? Eldred? Hey the man,
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: y'all cracking me up. I love it, but I'm gonna
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna say it. This might put it on online
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: or whatever. But if they get a J or b BTJ,
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: they'd beat the bills both times.
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: But if they keep get ross the way this, then
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: they don't get neither.
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: It might be a split.
- 1:40:07Speaker 8: That's why I'm gonna go with debt.
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: And one question is this the Cardinals is shopping Josh
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: Witt which are trade for?
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: And I take it off the air. Thanks for the call.
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: First of all, that whole rant about the Patriots for
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: me and the bills, I'm working under the assumption they
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: have aj Brown.
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: So to be fair, yeah, and I thought, you know, look,
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: it's one practice, and I don't want to you know, overseller,
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: override anything, but I I couldn't help but watch the
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: practice and be like Romeo Dodds is a nice piece,
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: but they they do kind of need if they don't
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: get a J. Brown, the Bills might still be I
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: just to I think Romeo dobs is a perfectly capable,
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: high volume Romeo Dobbs is the number two. Yeah, I
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: love him is the number two.
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: It felt at times today like you could kind of
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: feel that, like wow, this would just really really elevate
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: what they got going on here. If AJ Brown is
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: a part of this, so that's a big part of it.
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: Josh Sweat in or out? I mean, what are they
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: giving up?
- 1:41:09Speaker 10: Right?
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: In theory in I said this earlier in the show.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: I think that this is their weakest position. They have
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: the least depth. I'm worried about the guys at the
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: top of the depth chart in terms of injuries. I
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: would love to see them upgrade here. Yeah, am I
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: giving up the first round pick? Like, would I rather
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: have Josh Sweat or a J.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: Brown? I think I'd rather have AJ Brown. So if
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: it's that pick and you can send it one of
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: two places, I'm sending it to the Eagles if it's
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: you know, later on.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: So I'm just pulling up recent trades here. Well, that's
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: a player for player that doesn't help Rashaun Gary. How
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: would you grade Rashawn Gary relative to Josh Sweat evan.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: Different type of players. That was tough. I would say
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: Josh Sweat's a little bit more dynamic as so.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: On March eleventh, the Cowboys traded Raehan Gary for fourth
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: round pick.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: I would do that a second. I think it's more
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: the top one hundred. I would do third. I'd probably
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: stop at a second. Yeah. I like the player and
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: I actually think you'd be a pretty good fit here.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: He's like kind of that like bursty off the edge,
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: get off the ball, get up the field type of player. Uh,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: kind of like a better chase on some way. He's
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: got the long stabs, got the long strides. I like
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: the way he plays.
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: Jonathan them, Jonathan Grenard. How would you scale John Sweat Sweat?
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: Okay? So he went It was Grenard in a seventh
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: for two thirds. Okay, so we're probably looking at like
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: a third one. We're going to go back to last
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: year sort of in that range. The problem with this,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: Raymond Jones was traded for a fifth. The problem with
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: this is that you're, oh, how would you scale him?
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: Verse Jalen Phillips, pretty good calm third round pick. Yeah,
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: so I think we're looking at like a a third
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: round pick, but this is one to me. The bigger
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: thing is is that they're making one move. It's the
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: ei're trading for AJ Brown or they're trading for Josh.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: But they're not doing both. If you're trading, not when
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: you have to pay Gonzales and then pay May next
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: offseason or the next you know, in the next to
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: eighteen months, let's call it right now, they're not. They're
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: not putting out all that time.
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: If you're trading a twenty eight pick for AJ Brown,
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: it makes it little easier to swallow trading a twenty set.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: You're not trading him the same draft Sweats contract. I'm
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: more worried about the money. No, I'm not worried about it,
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: but in terms of them actually doing both those things,
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: I'd be more concerned. Well, I'll say this though, as
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: you reference the Gonzals and the May deals.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: Yeah, Sweats contracts up after this year, or there's a
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: there's an option, but you can get out of the
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: contract after this year with very little dead money. So
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: it's not a contract that overlaps May or Gonzales. Okay,
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: So it could be one of those like you're it
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: would be the definition of capitalizing on the rookie contract.
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like a lot, as I understand. I
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: don't know that. The cap stuff always weird to me,
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: but I think I have that it seems a lot
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: to push in the middle on this year's team. You
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: would have five million dollars a dead cap in twenty
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: seven and twenty eight. Listen. I think the AJ Brown thing, yeah,
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: is different because I feel like the AJ Brown thing
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: is an investment in Drake may as much as it's
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: an investment in AJ Brown. Yeah. I think we saw
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: it out there a little bit today. You felt it
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: at times last year in the playoff run, like they
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: just need to make his life. I think Josh swats
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: an investment in Drake may there. It might be like
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: not not, but that's more of like an investment in
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: like the ceiling of the twenty seven Patriots. I'm more
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: talking about investing in terms of like development of Drake Mayy.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: But I don't want to see Drake may regress, I guess.
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: And if you don't give him the weapons and the
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: you know, the offensive line, the whole infrastructure around him
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: to go out there and do what he did last year. Again,
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: then you're gonna see regression. And I think at times
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: in the playoffs last year they felt that, and I
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: think they would feel it if they didn't have a
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: guy like AJ Brown or you do the last thing
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: and we're big on this, and it maybe mattered more
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: for like a mac Jones because he didn't have the
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: physical talent that Drake May has. You need to make
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: a great infrastructure for your young quarterback. And I think
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: right now they're close. I think they're really close. I
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: think they have talent on the offensive line, certainly two
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: you know, first round picks back to back on the line.
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: I think they have a really good like two through
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: five at wide receiver, they have a good tight end room,
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: they have a good running back room. The missing piece
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: is like the stud receiver. So again, if it's both
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: teams want the same pick, I'm training for a J.
- 1:45:35Speaker 3: Brown.
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: But just separately from that, I am a little worried
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: about them on the edge. And if you had a
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: chance to add a guy like Josh Sweat and that
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: would be big.
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: Herm, you're up next term, and no, Herm was gonna
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: man explain math to bart. I was really looking forward
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: to that he actually yeah, so maybe maybe we can
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: get herm back on the line and he can explain
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: math to Alex because that was that was fantastic. So
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: now next week, alics last fifteen minutes here, we'll be
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: back at OTA's on Tuesday. June first is Monday, if
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: you're into that sort of thing. In terms of timing,
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: it has to be the deal for AJ Brown would
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: have to be processed on June second, right, So four
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: to oh one on June first is when the wire
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: technically shuts off for the day. The Patriots could agree
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: to terms on Monday night. AJ Brown could be a
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: New England Patriot by Tuesday morning, you know, as early
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: as Tuesday morning. So that's a big thing. But what
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: else you know, other than the potential of AJ Brown
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: walking through the up the hill to the practice field
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: out of nowhere on Tuesday? What else are you looking
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: at based off of today that you're looking ahead to
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: next week and want to see more.
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: Of again that attendant stuff. Does Gonzalz come back not
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: expecting that? Do we get to see Landry or Akis?
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: Where those guys at health?
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: Why? Yeah, I mean it's AJ Brown week though we're here,
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: it's aj Brown week, we are here finally, and the
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: closer and closer that we get to it. Not that
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: I've ever really wavered for the Patriots being the front runners,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: but the closer and closer that we get to it,
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: it feels like the tweet for Adam Schefters and the drafts,
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: and we're just waiting for the league to say, okay,
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: like now you know legally's Wy's we're cool with it,
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: like right, go ahead, and't announce that they came to terms.
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: I just feel like there's no way that if he
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: gets traded, and I still think he does, I just
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: don't see a path to him, not it not being
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: to New England. Like I know that there's some buzz
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: that people are trying to create with other teams maybe
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: coming back into this at the last second. I just
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: don't see it. Like I think he's gonna be here.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: I think it might even be as quick quick, like
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: it might be as soon as Monday night that we
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: find out about this, which is exciting, Like we don't
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: usually get that kind of news drop in the middle
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: of June, right, so that'll be excited as well. The
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: Actus one, it's it's on my radar and not in
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: a great way. I mean, you're not at rookie mini camp,
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: you're not participating in that. It could it be contract related. Absolutely,
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: it doesn't feel contract related to me, but the contract
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: related thing could is relevant to this conversation. He is
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: right in that second pick window where like he might
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: want the fully guaranteed contract that what did it run
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: through last year? Who I want to say pick fifty?
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: This is all the Texans fault?
- 1:48:32Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:48:32Speaker 1: Isn't the Texans that gave Jayden Higgins a guaranteed contracts
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: going to happen eventually? But we can play to Texas.
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: That's let's see who was it last year? A right,
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: he's at fifty five, so he's it's good to inch
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: a few players deeper every year basically, So he's on
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: that line. Yeah, he's right on that line that maybe
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: it's contract related, it might be physically, you know, injury related. Again,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: like I said earlier, I hope that Mike Rabel gets
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: asked about it. A couple of other things, you know,
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: just to wrap up the show here, just looking ahead
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: to next week. It stinks that these are such like
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: passing heavy camps this time of the year, because I
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: really thought that Reggie Gillium just looks like a great
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: athlete out there. He's much more of an athletic full back,
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: like in not quite the pass catcher. I don't think
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: that Kyle Uscheck is, but he's built and he moves
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: a lot more like a use Check than he does
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: a James Devlin. I'm just interested to see what Josh McDaniels,
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: you know, pulls out with a guy that he's not
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: Yakub Johnson, He's not James Devil. And this is a
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: true athlete at that position. And we got a question
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: from Aiden about the screen game and like, could you
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: see screens being a bigger part of it? I always felt,
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: and this is just a me thing, that screens were
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: more effective from under center than they are from the shotgun.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: And so if you're like in that twenty one personnel
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: group and you got the two backs in the backfield
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: and you run some under center screen action or something
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: like that, now you got Reggie Gilliam like out in space,
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: you know, leading to what eating away with the offensive lineman.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: I think that could be a really dynamic. They were
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: not a good screen team last year, No, weren't they
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: like dead like one of the worst teams in terms
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: of you had Can we describe formations or no? I
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: for us forget how the rules change technically. No, but
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: I think we can get away with it. They had
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: one with a running back. They got creative with the
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: running backs and Gilliam. I'll just say that.
- 1:50:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they'll use kind of like how they
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: used west Over last year. But again, I think Gillium's
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: just a better player where they kind of tapped into
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: some of Westover's tight end background and they forced defenses
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: into weird looks. I think they're gonna have an opportunity
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: to do more of that with Gilliam. Yeah. I think
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: that he's a lot more versatile because of his athleticism,
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: Like he doesn't have to just be in the dot
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: and the I formation like you know, in the backfield,
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: Like he's got that ability to move around a little
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: bit more, play a little bit more on the wing
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: of the formation as well. So there's some different things
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: that they can do with him that I think they
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: are going to be fun and creative, and that's a
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: big part.
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: There's another question that Drake May was asked about a
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: big part of the year two in Josh mcdaniels's system.
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: For a lot of these players, and especially the quarterback,
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: you already have like the base installed, and yes, you
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: have to go back and relearn it. It's kind of
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: like remember in school, how they would like reteach you
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: for the first like week or two would be like
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: a review of what you learned last year. That's like
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: exactly they literally handled it exactly like a curriculum in school.
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: So they come back in, the players come back in,
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: they do like a little refresher on what exactly they
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: did last year, and for the new guys, they like
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: on board the new guys and then they like you know,
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: start doing stuff that they are adding on too. And
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: I think some of the things that we're talking about
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: are ways that they can sort of add on to things.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: And I think that's exciting that they don't need to
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: go all the way back to square one and reinstall
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: the whole thing.
- 1:51:57Speaker 8: You know.
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: Drake May said today that there's play calls in the
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: huddle that he's heard before and that he's relayed, and
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: he understands why they're running these plays, and he understands
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: what his rules are and his reads are and all
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: those different types of things. So that that element of
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: it I think is pretty exciting. Just looking at that
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: list again of absences. Kyle Dixon, that was a weird
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: one that popped out of nowhere. We hyped him up
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: all rookie mini caamp out of that mini camp. He
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: was like the star of the show him Baron Morton,
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: and then he wasn't out at practice today. So a
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: couple of those guys with the absences and things like that,
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: that'll be interesting to look at. But we'll be on
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: AJ Brown watch. What do you think it ends up
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: being with AJ Brown? You know? Trade compensation now for
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: reporting it's twenty eight first, which I don't love, but
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: it's the price of getting business done. It's gonna be
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: weird for us if they trade that first and don't
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: recoup it next year. What are we gonna do that spree?
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: That's true, We'll talk a lot about the second round.
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: Think what if they're not picking to like pick sixty. Yeah,
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: I mean we're gonna have to really get deep. We're
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: gonna have to really nerd out. So we argued a
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: little bit about the first round pick of it all.
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: I think I'm still fine with the twenty twenty eight
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: first I'm twenty I don't want to touch twenty twenty seven.
- 1:53:06Speaker 2: The ideal scenario to me in twenty seven or twenty eight,
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: and I would do this in twenty seven is it's
- 1:53:11Speaker 2: a second round pick that becomes the first if A J.
- 1:53:15Speaker 2: Brown is twelve hundred yards, the Patriots make the playoffs.
- 1:53:17Speaker 2: Whatever however you want to qualify that like the Patriots.
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: Something that means the Patriots are clearly good enough where
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: they're in the playoffs. Yeah, so you know what I
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: trick because I think that that means the worst case,
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: it's like the eighteenth overall pick. It's a little rich
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: for ay J. Brown, but it's not unrealistic. I don't
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: want to accidentally give up like the fifth overall pick
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: for A J.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: Brown. I would just not you're going to be there.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: But like guys get hurt, you never know, right, Because
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: I think a lot of the conversation now, because we've
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: beaten this horse all those ways to beat it, is
- 1:53:44Speaker 1: that you know, are you comfortable with overpaying for A J. Brown?
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: And I guess, in short, I guess my answer is
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: yes for the opinion I have on that, But I
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: also I don't feel like it's going to be an
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: overpay because how much it's worth it in a two
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: year window right to have a player of that caliber.
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: Ultimately for Drake May If they win a Super Bowl
- 1:54:06Speaker 2: with AJ Brown on the roster, who cares what they
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: gave up.
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: Right, even if, like you know, he's a perennial Pro
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: Bowl caliber player for the next two years and they're
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: in it, like maybe you winning the Super bowls hard, right,
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: so you know they're in it. They're in the playoffs
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: both years. They're a competitive team. I kind of like,
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: you know, you know, obviously the Eagles won one, but
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: like kind of like the Eagles right where, they're just
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: they're good. They are a good team, and AJ Brown's
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: a part of that. I don't think any of us
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: are going to look back on it and be like,
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: it'd be really nice if they had the twenty ninth
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: pick in twenty twenty eight, right, you know. I just
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: don't think that you're going to look back at it
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: that way, especially with how good it could turn out
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: with AJ Brown on the team. So I don't if
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: that's overpay, then that's overpaying. I guess I don't think
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: it's overpaying. I think this is a true investment in
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: your young quarterback.
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: The one thing that they think, like infury, it's an overpay.
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: If you want to go you and Barton Poland want
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: to go to the actual literal math. Wow, it might
- 1:54:59Speaker 2: be an overpay. Yeah, but sometimes that's what you gotta do.
- 1:55:02Speaker 2: You got to bite the bull to make your team better.
- 1:55:04Speaker 2: And at the end of the day, in the short term,
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: it would make the Patriots better, which I think is
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: the most important thing right now.
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: It would be one of the bigger moves the Patriots
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: have made because it's a trade and not a free
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: agent signing. Yeah, that I can remember since I started
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: following the team. I mean, Steph Gilmour in free agency,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: Durell Reeves in free agency. You know, I guess the
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: Randy Moss trade would probably be the last time that
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: was also a fourth round pick and Moss wasn't he
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: was coming off Moss he was coming off some bad
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: years with the Raiders. Yeah, I'm trying to think of
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: like the biggest I think it's the Mos trade was
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: a big trade. That's a big deal. Look, you get
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: Randy Moss at that point in time was on a
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: Hall of Famer. Probably, I'm just off of his Minnesota years,
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: like you know, obviously a big, big, superstar receiver like that,
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: but this is more in you know, a different situation
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: with AJ Brown. But I would say, like than you
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: know those free agent signings that I mentioned, you know,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: maybe the twenty twenty one spending spree, Yeah, you know
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: where they just signed a bunch of dudes, or even
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: last year they you know, had a big free agency
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: you know, splashes, Milton Williams, you know all those guys.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: But AJ Brown tray would be big. I don't you know,
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: don't make any plan Sunday night, Like I think this
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: thing can happen quick Sunday. Well, I will be at
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: the Uh what if it happens. Are you going to
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: the Drake May softball game? I might, It's pretty far
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: from me.
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: But it happens while we're there, that would be wild.
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: But no, I'm coming home from that and then I
- 1:56:31Speaker 2: am fully on a J Brown watch.
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: Okay. So uh, either way, whether AJ Brown is here
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: or not, we will have plenty to talk about. Well,
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: have funny to talk about next week. Next Tuesday, Uh,
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: we will have a practice to watch. Patriots Unfiltered is
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: being pushed to the afternoon Patriot Sunfiltered tomorrow at noon
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: obviously at it's normal time, where we'll talk more about
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: our practice takeaways and get what I haven't even talked
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: to Paul and Duce. I don't know what they thought practice,
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: so that'd be interesting Tuesday later in the afternoon, right a,
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: it's like two thirty for Unfiltered after practice. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: And so we're rearranging the schedule here both for the
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: Patriots spring practices, but also stay patient with us because
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: the World Cup is throwing our whole schedule, show schedule
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: throw through a loop. So we'll keep you updated on
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: socials about where this show is going. But there's gonna
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: I'm just gonna be upfront and honest, there's gonna be
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: some wonky show times. Follow us on social media, yeah,
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: over the next four or five weeks. And obviously you
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: can get it, you know, on Spotify, Apple podcasts, wherever
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: you listen to podcasts, you can get your you know,
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: the listen to it after the show if you don't
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: listen to it live, So those were obviously an option
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: as well. But live show, it's gonna be a little
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: wonky the next couple of weeks thanks to the World
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: hopefully you excited? Did you? What did you think of
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: the US roster that they released. I believe, yeah, I
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: believe that it doesn't know, I believe that we will win. Yeah,
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: I'm not a soccer guy. Is a few questionable decisions
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: on the roster, but I didn't think anything too. When
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: does when's the World Cup start? When's the first match?
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: June ninth? I want to say, Okay, so turns out
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: that Christian Police, I mean we did call. I was
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: a little worried about that for him.
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: Actually no, not actually the best player because I know, like,
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: wasn't there an issue with like the coach keeping certain
- 1:58:19Speaker 2: players off over personal matters?
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: The coach. The coach made some decisions that were like
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: you know, kind of like we talk about with with
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: coaches in the NFL that were sort of like my
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: guys versus like the may more talented, like raw talented players,
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: but is just above Police is the best player? And
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: so the first match is June eleventh, So we do
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: have time.
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: But as we've become a bit of a basketball podcast,
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: I didn't know if we want to do soccer two and.
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe you give your take on the twenty six
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: man roster Matt Turner, New England Revolution Zone. He might
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: be the starting goalkeeper. It sound I think like I
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: I just who's winning the tournament? Who's winning I had
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: to make a If I had to make a pick today,
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: I'd still probably pick France to win the tournament. But
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna do some research and get backs. Maybe do
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: some research.
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: But the US group US, Paraguay, Australia, Turkey, that doesn't
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: seem like that bad of a group.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: Well, remember there's forty eight teams in the tournament now,
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: but just from their group, I'm saying they should not
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: get grouped. They should not. They should get out of
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: the group. Yes, if they don't get out of the group,
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: that's a catastrophic film. Give me some like actual meaningful
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: soccer to watch in the summer and I'll watch it.
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: They should get out of the group, all right. I
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: Am not expecting them to win anything beyond that, but
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: it would be kind of embarrassing to not get out
- 1:59:34Speaker 1: of the group. Some people think they're gonna go to
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: the round of sixteen. That's a little rich for my blood.
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: That'd be winning a knockout stage game. They just want
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: a knockout stage game. Was it last time, two times ago. No,
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: they got their butts kicked by the Netherlands last time.
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: Maybe it was two they well, the Dempsey Donovan team won. Yeah,
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: twenty eighteen they got to the round of sixteen, right, yeah,
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: that that team won a knockout around Okay, anyways, that's enough.
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: That's enough for me to do any Celtics. So we
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: had all Next week, I want to hear your take
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: on the US men's national teams, all right, I want
- 2:00:03Speaker 1: to take from you. All right, we'll be back next
