- 0:05Speaker 1: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 0:08Speaker 1: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 0:11Speaker 1: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Welcome to our number two.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Welcome in my good friend Jeff Schwartz, former Oregon Duck,
- 0:24Speaker 2: who will talk about what The Athletic called his alma
- 0:28Speaker 2: mater in an article yesterday. Jeff Schwartz, welcome. How are you?
- 0:33Speaker 3: I'm good, buddy. Getting ready for football this weekend, like
- 0:35Speaker 3: real football.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Real football. Week zero, TCU versus North Carolina. You live
- 0:41Speaker 2: in North Carolina. How much are people hyped over that matchup?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Oh, dude, it's dominating talking points. My kids come home
- 0:51Speaker 3: from school like, Dad, everyone's talking about North Carolina, TCU.
- 0:54Speaker 3: I'm sure they are, buddy. No, I mean, no one.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I mean, I think people are just after the Lombardi stuff.
- 1:02Speaker 3: And I think just people from North Carolina just can't
- 1:04Speaker 3: wait for this to be over, you know, and, you know,
- 1:07Speaker 3: move on and find a different coach for, for this program.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I'm, I'm putting out over-unders for the Utah football program,
- 1:17Speaker 2: trying to hit some statistical predictions. And today's an important
- 1:21Speaker 2: one for you. Offensive line types. It's a brand new unit,
- 1:25Speaker 2: brand new offensive line coach. The anticipation is that Devin
- 1:29Speaker 2: Dampier is going to be healthier this year and more escapable,
- 1:33Speaker 2: more mobile. Last year, Utah gave up 14 sacks on
- 1:37Speaker 2: the season. New Mexico, a couple years back, gave up
- 1:41Speaker 2: five with him as their starting quarterback. And I'm setting
- 1:45Speaker 2: the total at 19 and a half, which would be
- 1:47Speaker 2: good enough for top five in last year's Big 12,
- 1:50Speaker 2: top seven in most years. It's usually kind of a
- 1:53Speaker 2: top 25 nationally, top 30 number if you give up.
- 1:57Speaker 2: fewer than 19 sacks, or I should say 19 or
- 2:00Speaker 2: fewer sacks since we're doing over-under. What would you say
- 2:05Speaker 2: if you're predicting over or under 19 and a half
- 2:07Speaker 2: sacks for Utah football in a year where they've got
- 2:10Speaker 2: all that new stuff up front?
- 2:13Speaker 3: I'd say under. Think about their schedule, first of all.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Who are you really fearful is going to rush the
- 2:19Speaker 3: passer in a way that really makes this unit stress?
- 2:24Speaker 3: I don't think there's a great answer for that. You
- 2:26Speaker 3: miss some of the better defense's So that's sort of
- 2:28Speaker 3: a very helpful for this for this young group as well.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You mentioned Dan Pierre, right? Being able to move and
- 2:32Speaker 3: whatnot and to create different ways to to avoid sacks into,
- 2:39Speaker 3: you know, in college football and really in all football. But,
- 2:43Speaker 3: you know, the way you can run the ball in
- 2:45Speaker 3: college football that allows you to have very short third downs, right? And,
- 2:50Speaker 3: you know, a lot of times you have a short
- 2:52Speaker 3: third down and you don't get sacked on third and two, right?
- 2:54Speaker 3: You run the ball on third and two. Like, you
- 2:56Speaker 3: do different things on third and two and third and
- 2:58Speaker 3: one than you would on third and seven, right? Like,
- 3:00Speaker 3: when is Utah going to have a ton of pure dropbacks? Now,
- 3:04Speaker 3: the only thing that is tough about this, right, is,
- 3:07Speaker 3: you know, sometimes quarterback scrambles run out of bounds. Like,
- 3:13Speaker 3: they can be counted as sacks, right? When they're not
- 3:15Speaker 3: really sacks, Sean, that's the one thing I worry about
- 3:18Speaker 3: with anything like this. But I think in the end,
- 3:21Speaker 3: I think under 19 is very doable for this Utah
- 3:25Speaker 3: offensive line.
- 3:26Speaker 2: It would be a big thing for this offense because
- 3:29Speaker 2: I think they are going to throw a little bit
- 3:30Speaker 2: more this year. Last year, they were the number one
- 3:32Speaker 2: run offense in the Big 12 and a top five
- 3:34Speaker 2: run offense nationally. So I think you're going to pass
- 3:37Speaker 2: a little bit more this year. And if you can
- 3:40Speaker 2: keep that quarterback upright, you can keep that pocket clean,
- 3:43Speaker 2: and you can lean on his– natural gifts as an
- 3:45Speaker 2: escape artist. I do think it's a number you can hit,
- 3:50Speaker 2: but that's why I said it where it is, because
- 3:52Speaker 2: if you do good things, great things potentially, if you don't,
- 3:56Speaker 2: I'd probably be a little disappointed by that.
- 3:59Speaker 3: What are the reports out of camp about the offensive line? Obviously,
- 4:02Speaker 3: you don't get to see very much and whatnot, and
- 4:04Speaker 3: I'm sure there's not much information. I did see Jordan
- 4:06Speaker 3: post a picture the other day with those guys after camp.
- 4:09Speaker 3: I saw that. Everyone looks excited for the season. But
- 4:13Speaker 3: what do you got from camp so far?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Well, depending on who you talk to, right, there's a
- 4:17Speaker 2: certain level of optimism. I think a genuine level of optimism.
- 4:21Speaker 2: But and maybe you can tell me, should we be
- 4:24Speaker 2: concerned about this or not? We are in game prep
- 4:28Speaker 2: now and they are not really ready to say who
- 4:30Speaker 2: the best five are, who the starting five are. Camp
- 4:33Speaker 2: ended on Saturday. And now they're doing install, and it's
- 4:37Speaker 2: a long install period, right? And you're going up against
- 4:40Speaker 2: the University of Idaho, so you could probably really extend
- 4:42Speaker 2: your camp and those position battles a couple of days
- 4:45Speaker 2: if you need to. But, you know, I was really
- 4:49Speaker 2: pressing hard on some people and trying to, like, get
- 4:52Speaker 2: some information.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Who are the top five? We don't know yet. If
- 4:56Speaker 2: you had to start a group of five today, do
- 5:00Speaker 2: you feel comfortable that you have the right five? We're
- 5:03Speaker 2: still figuring that out, so... From a timeline perspective, is
- 5:07Speaker 2: that a worry?
- 5:08Speaker 3: No, I mean, Oregon's doing the same thing right now. Oregon,
- 5:10Speaker 3: I think, doesn't know who their starting five is going
- 5:12Speaker 3: to be. They didn't have an idea of who it's
- 5:14Speaker 3: going to be, but you don't know sometimes until you
- 5:16Speaker 3: actually play the game, Sean, right? You don't know until
- 5:18Speaker 3: you get guys that are in there for a game.
- 5:20Speaker 3: I mean, look, there are guys that just aren't as
- 5:22Speaker 3: good when the lights come on. That's what it is, right?
- 5:24Speaker 3: You've got to play those guys. Some guys, there's young
- 5:27Speaker 3: guys that are not ready to play yet until they're
- 5:30Speaker 3: ready to play. You've got to give them those reps
- 5:31Speaker 3: to see if they're ready to play. So, I wouldn't
- 5:33Speaker 3: be surprised if Utah even uses the first couple of
- 5:35Speaker 3: games to rotate guys, right? I mean, it's commonplace to
- 5:40Speaker 3: play maybe eight offensive linemen early in the season, right?
- 5:42Speaker 3: You figure out where your best guys are. Maybe it's
- 5:46Speaker 3: a conditioning thing, too. You want to make sure you're
- 5:48Speaker 3: in shape to play a full game. So you just
- 5:50Speaker 3: rotate guys through, and you have the luxury of doing
- 5:52Speaker 3: that with some of your early seasons. It would not
- 5:54Speaker 3: surprise me if they didn't have a firm group for
- 5:57Speaker 3: a couple of weeks.
- 5:59Speaker 2: I also... I'm going to bring back one that I
- 6:01Speaker 2: don't think we had an opportunity to talk about. Kelvin Obot,
- 6:05Speaker 2: who's the highest-rated recruit in program history and is an
- 6:08Speaker 2: offensive lineman, played tackle in high school. We heard in
- 6:12Speaker 2: spring that maybe they'll test him out at guard a
- 6:14Speaker 2: little bit. I also put an over-under on five-and-a-half games
- 6:18Speaker 2: started this year for Kelvin Obot, and a lot of
- 6:21Speaker 2: people were calling the under. I really think a guy
- 6:25Speaker 2: like that, you're bringing him in to start right away
- 6:27Speaker 2: I know it's harder on an offensive line than in
- 6:30Speaker 2: other positions, but I think it's going to be over.
- 6:33Speaker 2: I think he's going to start more than half the season.
- 6:35Speaker 2: That's why I said it at five and a half.
- 6:37Speaker 2: What would your assumption be?
- 6:39Speaker 3: I mean, I imagine they'd like him to play, right?
- 6:42Speaker 3: And there's no redshirt rule anymore, right? So you can
- 6:45Speaker 3: play as many games as you want and get that
- 6:47Speaker 3: year back. So I would– he knows Jordan Gross, obviously, right?
- 6:52Speaker 3: He's the one that Jordan coached in high school, right?
- 6:54Speaker 1: Correct.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So he knows Jordan. Um, you know, that, that plays
- 6:57Speaker 3: a role in this, right. Just having a familiarity with it,
- 6:59Speaker 3: with the offensive line coach, I would imagine can't hurt you,
- 7:02Speaker 3: you know, um, in this situation. I, I think that,
- 7:06Speaker 3: I think Utah would love if this was over, right.
- 7:08Speaker 3: They would love that if he played, well, start, I
- 7:10Speaker 3: should say more than five games. I, I think that
- 7:15Speaker 3: you need him to, well, I think that over in
- 7:18Speaker 3: also the question is what about, is it going to
- 7:20Speaker 3: be a guard or tackle? I, that one's harder for
- 7:23Speaker 3: me to, to predict.
- 7:25Speaker 2: You have a guy you brought in from the National
- 7:29Speaker 2: Championship Montana State team at the 1AA level, Cedric Jefferson,
- 7:35Speaker 2: who is factoring into the right tackle discussion. We all
- 7:38Speaker 2: think Zerway Williams, who's this gigantic monster 6'8 left tackle,
- 7:43Speaker 2: is going to be one of the mainstays, right? So
- 7:46Speaker 2: maybe him at left tackle. There's a guy named Ike
- 7:48Speaker 2: Garcia who's a local kid who is a highly rated
- 7:51Speaker 2: recruit who hasn't been able to stay healthy. He is
- 7:54Speaker 2: now in his third year in the program, and apparently
- 7:56Speaker 2: it was a big battle with him and the Jefferson
- 7:58Speaker 2: guy at right tackle. There's nothing wrong with, if you're
- 8:04Speaker 2: going to use the true freshman, letting him be a
- 8:06Speaker 2: guard for the first year and then bumping him out
- 8:08Speaker 2: to tackle as need, right? Or no?
- 8:12Speaker 3: You don't really go out. Once you move inside, that's
- 8:17Speaker 3: the end of it. Really? No. Yeah, you don't see
- 8:19Speaker 3: many guys going back out to tackle.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Like Zane Beatles.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Injury can dictate that. Sometimes guys have to go inside
- 8:26Speaker 3: because of injury, but a lot of times you don't
- 8:29Speaker 3: start a guard and move back out to tackle. That's
- 8:31Speaker 3: something that doesn't happen very often.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I feel like Utah football has done that with a
- 8:34Speaker 2: couple of guys, though. Maybe that's why my view on
- 8:36Speaker 2: this is skewed.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Maybe Utah has done it. I just know from other experiences,
- 8:44Speaker 3: from definitely the NFL, that You rarely go inside and
- 8:47Speaker 3: go back out in your career. I mean, obviously, I
- 8:50Speaker 3: did not do that. I stayed inside once I moved inside. Now,
- 8:55Speaker 3: if the idea is we want to get our best five.
- 8:57Speaker 3: He's one of our best five. He's our third best tackle.
- 9:01Speaker 3: We want him to play. Okay, but here's the thing
- 9:03Speaker 3: about that. If he plays well at guard, you're probably
- 9:07Speaker 3: going to feel like you should just keep him there.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Like what? why move a player who's really good at
- 9:12Speaker 3: a position, right? We could find some more tackles. That's
- 9:14Speaker 3: what it comes down to, right? If he plays well
- 9:16Speaker 3: enough as a guard, you're probably like, well, let's just
- 9:18Speaker 3: keep him a guard.
- 9:19Speaker 2: But aren't you supposed to put your best athletes on
- 9:21Speaker 2: the offensive line to tackle?
- 9:24Speaker 3: I mean, probably that's why I think you just keep
- 9:27Speaker 3: him a tackle. Don't even bother putting him a guard.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Okay. Well, I think that would affect the number of
- 9:33Speaker 2: over-under on.
- 9:34Speaker 3: How many games he actually starts. I just would be
- 9:35Speaker 3: surprised if he played guard for a season and went
- 9:38Speaker 3: back out to tackle. That's something that's Not very common. Interesting. Okay.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Well, we'll see how it plays out for Kelvin Obot.
- 9:45Speaker 2: People are probably so sick of hearing me talk about him,
- 9:48Speaker 2: but I'm excited about it.
- 9:49Speaker 3: It's important for the program to have guys succeed like
- 9:51Speaker 3: that because it really opens up the door to other
- 9:54Speaker 3: guys that want to come into the program in similar
- 9:59Speaker 3: type players, right? you can get players like him to
- 10:02Speaker 3: play well early on, then you can really sell that
- 10:05Speaker 3: to other five-star recruits. It's an important piece if he's
- 10:09Speaker 3: able to do it this year.
- 10:11Speaker 2: The Big Ten is going to put a rule in
- 10:13Speaker 2: place that you cannot boomerang. You can't go into the
- 10:16Speaker 2: pros in any way and then come back. And the
- 10:20Speaker 2: SEC's talking about it. The Big 12's talking about it.
- 10:22Speaker 2: The ACC's talking about it. Really, it's going to affect
- 10:26Speaker 2: the SEC more than anyone because those are the schools
- 10:29Speaker 2: that are like, academics.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Don't worry about it.
- 10:32Speaker 2: We want you, right? Your thoughts on guys that were
- 10:38Speaker 2: undrafted free agents or maybe late-round picks who get the
- 10:42Speaker 2: message pretty early, you're not going to stick in the
- 10:45Speaker 2: NFL this year, wanting to come back for that extra
- 10:48Speaker 2: year of eligibility.
- 10:50Speaker 3: So these schools are very clearly using whatever power they
- 10:56Speaker 3: have left to have some sort of semblance of uniformity, right?
- 11:00Speaker 3: Because there's no power left anymore for these universities and
- 11:04Speaker 3: these programs. There's no power left. They've been stripped of
- 11:06Speaker 3: all their power. So they have a little bit of
- 11:08Speaker 3: power here, right? They're trying to use it, which I
- 11:10Speaker 3: agree with in this instance. Look, Sean, life is not fair,
- 11:15Speaker 3: as we know, right? And these 2022 players, right, they
- 11:20Speaker 3: kind of got screwed. The class after them, the 2023 class,
- 11:25Speaker 3: gets an extra year. The couple classes before them got
- 11:28Speaker 3: extra COVID year. They sort of did benefit from any
- 11:31Speaker 3: of this. And I just sort of say, like, I'm sorry.
- 11:35Speaker 3: I don't know why we change everything because of it. Now,
- 11:38Speaker 3: where does it stop, right? Sean, let's say that they
- 11:42Speaker 3: are granted relief and they're allowed to play this season,
- 11:45Speaker 3: which might happen. Judge Munchie, the Big Ten and SEC
- 11:47Speaker 3: can't have these rules in place. Then, Why couldn't a
- 11:50Speaker 3: 2019 kid say, well, I didn't get a COVID year
- 11:53Speaker 3: and I didn't get a fifth year. Well, I feel
- 11:55Speaker 3: the screen ran against. So I didn't get a fifth year.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I put 80 snaps as a true freshman. They changed
- 12:00Speaker 3: the rules after I left. Do I get to claim
- 12:02Speaker 3: some relief from a judge if I want to go
- 12:04Speaker 3: back and play? If I get a speeding ticket and
- 12:08Speaker 3: then six months later, they changed the speed, the legal speed.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Do I get to go back and tell the judge, hey, man,
- 12:13Speaker 3: you changed the speed. I didn't break the law. There's
- 12:16Speaker 3: obviously no one's breaking a law here. But at some point,
- 12:18Speaker 3: don't we just have to say, like, you kind of
- 12:21Speaker 3: got screwed. I'm sorry. The rules are the rules. You
- 12:24Speaker 3: didn't know at the time, but you went to the NFL.
- 12:27Speaker 3: You've made a roster. You haven't made a roster. You've
- 12:29Speaker 3: signed an agent. You've been part of the NFL. You're
- 12:32Speaker 3: just not going to play college football anymore. At some point,
- 12:34Speaker 3: we have to just put our foot down on some
- 12:36Speaker 3: of this stuff. And I think in the end, a
- 12:38Speaker 3: judge will overrule this anyway. So all we're talking about now,
- 12:42Speaker 3: it doesn't even matter, but. At some point, you have
- 12:44Speaker 3: to put your foot down, Sean, and say, this is it.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Enough is enough.
- 12:47Speaker 2: I don't disagree with you at all. What I'm curious
- 12:50Speaker 2: about is why it is judges... Because the NCAA puts
- 12:54Speaker 2: their foot down, or the conferences are going to put
- 12:57Speaker 2: their foot down, or whoever's going to... Like, the powers
- 13:01Speaker 2: that be try to put their foot down, and then
- 13:03Speaker 2: there's some district court judge in Louisiana who's just like,
- 13:07Speaker 2: you've got to pick that foot back up. We're not
- 13:09Speaker 2: doing that. I don't know, like... I don't know why,
- 13:12Speaker 2: because you brought up a really great example. There's plenty
- 13:16Speaker 2: of laws that have changed over the course of history,
- 13:18Speaker 2: and it's not like everyone who broke that law just
- 13:20Speaker 2: gets let out of jail.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:22Speaker 2: You know?
- 13:27Speaker 3: The judge thing is interesting, right? You know, it's just
- 13:34Speaker 3: that we have federal laws, state laws. Every state has
- 13:37Speaker 3: their own law. And you can understand it. Look, a lot.
- 13:40Speaker 3: By the way, these are not really, like, judgments. For example, like,
- 13:48Speaker 3: what's happening is someone is suing, right? And while they're suing,
- 13:53Speaker 3: the judge goes, okay, I'll grant you relief. You can
- 13:56Speaker 3: now play, all right? Then the NCAA goes to a
- 14:00Speaker 3: different court, and they say, you know what? We're going
- 14:02Speaker 3: to pause that ruling right now until we have an actual, like...
- 14:05Speaker 3: It's not... Does that make sense? No one's actually winning anything.
- 14:09Speaker 3: They're just judges changing their mind to give themselves time
- 14:13Speaker 3: to give our actual ruling. So like that, and then
- 14:16Speaker 3: you have obviously different states and the federal, it's just,
- 14:19Speaker 3: it's all over the place. And it's a, it's a problem,
- 14:23Speaker 3: you know, created by NCAA. We were on the air
- 14:25Speaker 3: for years talking about these type of topics, right? NCAA
- 14:27Speaker 3: just did not foresee any of this happening. And it's
- 14:32Speaker 3: going to cost them their sports, a wrong word to use,
- 14:35Speaker 3: but it's just going to, Everything's just going to be
- 14:38Speaker 3: different now, man. The whole sport is different. It's not
- 14:41Speaker 3: going back the other way either.
- 14:45Speaker 2: The basketball involvement in this is funny. I know that
- 14:48Speaker 2: we're rounding into football season, but we've been flirting with the...
- 14:54Speaker 2: There's been pro-European guys that have played in college basketball
- 14:57Speaker 2: for years. The line is muddy with that. Now that
- 15:04Speaker 2: college football is being affected, now is when these conferences
- 15:08Speaker 2: feel like they need to address it. It just shows
- 15:10Speaker 2: you how powerful college football is when it comes to
- 15:13Speaker 2: the landscape.
- 15:15Speaker 3: It does. College basketball, it's interesting, right? Because they feel
- 15:19Speaker 3: like they have more of this happening in college basketball,
- 15:23Speaker 3: and it just hasn't been the same. I mean, college basketball,
- 15:26Speaker 3: they got dudes that play like G League games going back,
- 15:29Speaker 3: which is like insane. I mean, these NFL players haven't
- 15:33Speaker 3: played NFL games yet. I guess they played in preseason games.
- 15:35Speaker 3: There's no minor league NFL. um but yeah college basketball
- 15:39Speaker 3: just doesn't have the same attention that the football players
- 15:41Speaker 3: do i think it's i think also like if this
- 15:44Speaker 3: happened in in may you'd feel differently but it's happening
- 15:50Speaker 3: while players are leaving nfl camps now and going back
- 15:53Speaker 3: to college like they're literally in like i think i'd
- 15:56Speaker 3: feel differently this happened right after the draft i'm like
- 15:59Speaker 3: okay all right like i sure i okay i get
- 16:02Speaker 3: it but The draft was months ago now. That was
- 16:05Speaker 3: the end of April. Life has moved on, man.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Would you rather block for Deshaun Watson or Shador Sanders
- 16:12Speaker 2: in Cleveland?
- 16:15Speaker 3: Ask for a trade. Are we talking just football or
- 16:21Speaker 3: are we talking everything?
- 16:23Speaker 2: Obviously, everything factors in here.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I would not want to play with Deshaun Watson. I
- 16:30Speaker 3: think as a quarterback... he throws the ball quicker and
- 16:34Speaker 3: on time. That's the thing I worry about most, right?
- 16:36Speaker 3: Like if my quarterback doesn't throw the ball on time
- 16:38Speaker 3: or not. And Sanders just doesn't throw the ball on
- 16:41Speaker 3: time enough. But I also don't want to play with
- 16:45Speaker 3: a quarterback who's going to get booed by our fans
- 16:46Speaker 3: every time he steps on the field. So, I mean,
- 16:49Speaker 3: I would probably lean towards Sanders in this instance over
- 16:53Speaker 3: Watson because Watson's a scumbag and he's not very good
- 16:57Speaker 3: and he gets booed endlessly the entire season. And Sanders,
- 17:02Speaker 3: at least, seems like a good kid. He might hold
- 17:06Speaker 3: the ball a little bit too long and make my
- 17:07Speaker 3: life a little more difficult, but he'll make some good
- 17:10Speaker 3: plays on the run. Sanders is what he is, man.
- 17:12Speaker 3: It's so interesting about the Sanders. It's a football player, right?
- 17:17Speaker 3: And I talk about this a lot. I like using
- 17:22Speaker 3: and thinking about sort of like historical trends, right? And
- 17:26Speaker 3: it's important. So right now there's only two starting quarterbacks
- 17:29Speaker 3: in national football, like franchise guys, all right? So that
- 17:33Speaker 3: second contract, right, Sean, or a young player in a
- 17:37Speaker 3: rookie deal, right? Like Drake May, right? Franchise guy, rookie contract.
- 17:40Speaker 3: There's only two in the NFL that are not drafted
- 17:44Speaker 3: in the top 53 picks, right? 53rd is Jalen Hurts.
- 17:48Speaker 3: It's Dak Prescott and Brock Purdy, all right? And both
- 17:52Speaker 3: those guys were good. almost immediately as rookies. Dak played
- 17:56Speaker 3: from year one, game one, and I think Purdy ended
- 17:58Speaker 3: up playing like week 12. And they were good immediately.
- 18:01Speaker 3: And Sanders is a fifth-round pick, man. Like, he's not
- 18:05Speaker 3: that good. I think people have missed the plot on this, man.
- 18:09Speaker 3: They're so into the... Politics is the wrong word. I
- 18:13Speaker 3: don't know what you want to call it in this
- 18:14Speaker 3: situation where the Sanders defenders are just like... They're very supportive.
- 18:21Speaker 3: They're very passionate about Sanders. And he's a fifth-round pick, man.
- 18:24Speaker 3: And now this is now two coaching staffs who said,
- 18:26Speaker 3: we don't want you to be our starter from, from
- 18:27Speaker 3: week one.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:30Speaker 2: It's, uh, his, his place in the culture is very
- 18:35Speaker 2: odd given his place on the field. If that is
- 18:37Speaker 2: the right way to put it.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:38Speaker 3: And you know, like, you know, in the Tebow was
- 18:41Speaker 3: a first round pick who played a lot of football games. Oh,
- 18:45Speaker 3: you loved, I love Tebow.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 3: Um, you know, a lot of the time we discuss those,
- 18:49Speaker 3: it's like first round picks, right? Like we don't argue
- 18:51Speaker 3: about fifth round picks very often. Um, And it just
- 18:56Speaker 3: seems like, you know, I think sometimes we're just too online.
- 19:02Speaker 3: At least I am. Like, I think all the time about, like,
- 19:06Speaker 3: how would this topic be, like, in real life? Like,
- 19:08Speaker 3: my neighbor, who's, like, a fringe football fan, if he was, like,
- 19:10Speaker 3: talking about Sanders, I was like, he's fifth-round pick. He's like, oh, yeah, okay, yeah,
- 19:13Speaker 3: he's not playing. That makes sense. Or some of the
- 19:15Speaker 3: WNBA stuff, I'd be like, you know, if I bring
- 19:18Speaker 3: it up to him, he'd be like, yeah, that's, wait, really?
- 19:19Speaker 3: That's what's happening? We're just so online, like, Are people
- 19:23Speaker 3: in real life really arguing about Sanders' viability as a
- 19:26Speaker 3: long-term starter as a fifth-round pick? This is such an
- 19:28Speaker 3: online discussion.
- 19:31Speaker 2: It is very much. Is there a week-zero game that
- 19:35Speaker 2: you're actually looking forward to?
- 19:37Speaker 3: I took USC over 48.5 points against San Jose State.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I was doing some research on this.
- 19:43Speaker 2: I do love how when I ask a question about
- 19:45Speaker 2: a game you're actually looking forward to, you just go
- 19:48Speaker 2: to what you are willing to bet on.
- 19:51Speaker 3: That's how I'm going to watch football this weekend. I
- 19:57Speaker 3: was looking this up today. USC loves, dude, to run
- 20:02Speaker 3: it up on these teams. The last three times they
- 20:05Speaker 3: played a San Jose State, it was Utah. I have
- 20:07Speaker 3: it right here. I was doing this before it got
- 20:09Speaker 3: on the air. It was Utah State in 2024, Missouri
- 20:12Speaker 3: State last year, and Georgia Southern last year as well.
- 20:16Speaker 3: They went well over 40.5 points. But they scored 14 points,
- 20:19Speaker 3: 17 points, and 14 points in the fourth quarters of
- 20:23Speaker 3: those three games. That's a lot of points. For reference,
- 20:27Speaker 3: Oregon last year played Montana State in Week 1, Oklahoma
- 20:31Speaker 3: State in Week 2. They scored seven total fourth-quarter points
- 20:34Speaker 3: in those two games. Like USC, they just run it up, bro.
- 20:39Speaker 3: They love to do it. And there's nothing wrong with it. But,
- 20:41Speaker 3: you know, they're going to score a ton of points
- 20:42Speaker 3: this weekend. I want to watch that game. Obviously, some
- 20:45Speaker 3: interest in the Dublin game. The loser of that game,
- 20:47Speaker 3: like their season just goes down the drain fast. Go
- 20:50Speaker 3: look at the results the last couple of years. I'm
- 20:52Speaker 3: curious about Stanford with Tavita Pritchard, you know, in week one,
- 20:56Speaker 3: just to sort of see where they're at. You know,
- 20:58Speaker 3: I talked to him AC Media Day. I like talking
- 21:00Speaker 3: with him. So it's a lot to get. Dude, there's
- 21:02Speaker 3: Thursday night. There's a FCS Thursday night.
- 21:07Speaker 2: You're going to be watching that?
- 21:09Speaker 3: I don't know. If I have a bet on it,
- 21:10Speaker 3: maybe I will. I know you'll be locked into some
- 21:13Speaker 3: Weber State playing Thursday night.
- 21:14Speaker 2: Are they?
- 21:15Speaker 3: Who's the Weber State opener? Do you have your pocket
- 21:17Speaker 3: schedule handy?
- 21:19Speaker 2: I don't have it in front of me.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Do you remember when we used to get, like, pocket schedules?
- 21:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 21:24Speaker 3: I think my dad would keep, like, the usual one
- 21:27Speaker 3: in his wallet. That's so fantastic.
- 21:30Speaker 2: The pocket schedule not as good as the magnet schedule,
- 21:33Speaker 2: the fridge magnet schedule.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 3: We had both of those. Before I get out of here,
- 21:39Speaker 3: everyone go to my Twitter, at Jeff Schwartz. Can we
- 21:42Speaker 3: talk a second about my son's video that I posted
- 21:46Speaker 3: on there?
- 21:47Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. It's so good.
- 21:48Speaker 3: So my son is 12.
- 21:50Speaker 2: He's awesome.
- 21:51Speaker 3: He just turned 12. He's the best kid of all time.
- 21:53Speaker 3: And he was going to his first bat mitzvah party
- 21:57Speaker 3: this weekend. The first party he has to wear a
- 21:59Speaker 3: jacket to. So I told him, you know, In Temple
- 22:02Speaker 3: in the morning, for Temple, you have to wear a
- 22:03Speaker 3: collared shirt, right? A white collared shirt. He wore a
- 22:06Speaker 3: blue blazer and some slacks. And for the party, I
- 22:09Speaker 3: was like, look, bro, you got to wear your jacket
- 22:11Speaker 3: there to the country club. You can wear a polo underneath.
- 22:13Speaker 3: You can wear a polo underneath. You can take it off.
- 22:15Speaker 3: You're 12. Who cares? So he goes to the party,
- 22:19Speaker 3: all right? My wife texts me a video on Sunday
- 22:22Speaker 3: morning from a security camera that we have under a
- 22:24Speaker 3: mirror in our house. And my son was doing shadow
- 22:28Speaker 3: boxing and kickboxing.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yes.
- 22:30Speaker 3: With the jacket on. And I asked him afterwards, yeah,
- 22:32Speaker 3: I was just testing to see if I could move
- 22:33Speaker 3: in it. Dude, it's the right thing to do. He
- 22:39Speaker 3: threw about three punches. He did it like an elbow punch.
- 22:42Speaker 3: What's that call when you throw your elbow like that?
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's called an elbow.
- 22:45Speaker 3: A what?
- 22:46Speaker 2: It's called an elbow.
- 22:47Speaker 3: Okay, he threw an elbow. He did like a kick.
- 22:50Speaker 2: He did a kick. Then he did a jump kick.
- 22:53Speaker 3: I was like, he's like, I'm ready to go, Dad.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Dude, it's so sick. And it's awesome because... We've all
- 22:59Speaker 2: done that. Every one of us goes in front of
- 23:01Speaker 2: a mirror and you make a different face. It's not
- 23:03Speaker 2: your real face. You're trying to look better in the mirror.
- 23:06Speaker 2: You suck your gut in, right? But when you're younger,
- 23:09Speaker 2: maybe you throw a couple of punches. Maybe you're making
- 23:11Speaker 2: sure you got your mobility. You never know what's going
- 23:13Speaker 2: to happen at a bat mitzvah.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I just love it. So good. He's never been in
- 23:18Speaker 3: a fight ever. Mike, there's never been a fight. He's
- 23:21Speaker 3: not close to a fight. There's no need for him
- 23:23Speaker 3: to know any of those skills ever.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Look, if someone tries to cut in with your dance
- 23:27Speaker 2: with your lady at the bat mitzvah, come on.
- 23:30Speaker 3: It's the best. Go look at the video on Jeff's Twitter.
- 23:35Speaker 2: It really is great.
- 23:36Speaker 3: If you turn up the volume, you can hear the
- 23:37Speaker 3: noises he's making with his mouth. He's making noises with
- 23:43Speaker 3: his mouth. So awesome. And that was legitimately... 10 minutes
- 23:47Speaker 3: before he went to the party.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Does he know that you've put this out for the
- 23:50Speaker 2: whole world to see?
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he knows. He doesn't care.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Was he mad?
- 23:53Speaker 3: No, he laughed so hard.
- 23:56Speaker 2: He is really the best. That's awesome.
- 23:58Speaker 3: He's an awesome kid. I love that kid. I love
- 24:00Speaker 3: my daughter too, but they're just different kids. It's so good.
- 24:05Speaker 3: I love that. I feel like that's some of your
- 24:06Speaker 3: influence on us.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yes, I hope so. All right, we've got to try
- 24:11Speaker 2: to stay on clock, so I'm going to cut you loose,
- 24:12Speaker 2: but you're the man.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us. All right. Bye-bye.
- 24:16Speaker 2: That's Jeff Schwartz, former NFL player, Oregon duck, betting expert,
- 24:22Speaker 2: not going back to get more eligibility and trying to play.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz is actually the kind of person who, if
- 24:28Speaker 2: he lived here in Utah, I would be sending him
- 24:31Speaker 2: to Southern steer butcher in Saratoga Springs. And he would
- 24:35Speaker 2: make the trip. Even if he was up here in
- 24:37Speaker 2: salt Lake, where I'm at 1705 North Redwood road down
- 24:39Speaker 2: in Saratoga Springs, uh, And he would walk in, and
- 24:42Speaker 2: he would talk to Dan and Aubrey, and he would say, look,
- 24:44Speaker 2: I need this exact cut. I need a bone-in ribeye.
- 24:47Speaker 2: I don't want it to be an inch thick. I
- 24:49Speaker 2: need it one and three-quarters thick. He would have very,
- 24:52Speaker 2: very particular interests on the cut of meat because he's
- 24:57Speaker 2: a bit of a gourmand. Jeff is the kind of
- 24:59Speaker 2: guy who knows exactly what he wants from his butcher.
- 25:02Speaker 2: They can accommodate that at Southern Steer. They'll cut that
- 25:05Speaker 2: thing for you while you wait. All right? You want
- 25:08Speaker 2: the big tomahawk steak that's been dry-aged, They have the
- 25:11Speaker 2: dry aging locker right there. You can go in, you
- 25:13Speaker 2: can point at it. I want that one. If you're
- 25:16Speaker 2: not necessarily that discerning with the palate or that discerning
- 25:20Speaker 2: with your meat, maybe you're not somebody who knows exactly
- 25:23Speaker 2: what the best fit is or what kind of ribs
- 25:26Speaker 2: you should be feeding your guests for the college football barbecue.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Let Dan and Aubrey walk you through it or better yet,
- 25:31Speaker 2: let them give you one of the pre-made meals or
- 25:35Speaker 2: three of the pre-made meals. You can get three pre-made meals, sides,
- 25:39Speaker 2: Main meat, everything for less than $ 60, 59 bucks, everything
- 25:43Speaker 2: you need for three complete meals. You need the seasonings,
- 25:47Speaker 2: the salts, the rubs, the jams, the sides, the chips.
- 25:51Speaker 2: They have it all down there. at Southern steer and
- 25:54Speaker 2: they're going to give you a smile. They're going to
- 25:56Speaker 2: give you some advice. They're going to treat you like
- 25:58Speaker 2: the neighborhood butcher used to treat your grandma and your grandpa.
- 26:02Speaker 2: It's that concept, but with a modern twist at Southern
- 26:05Speaker 2: steer butcher, tell them OC sent you join the Southern
- 26:08Speaker 2: steer rewards club for the daily and weekly savings and
- 26:11Speaker 2: take advantage of clean, fresh meat, hormone free, antibiotic free.
- 26:17Speaker 2: It's the kind of stuff you should be feeding your
- 26:19Speaker 2: family now, and you can do it without breaking the bank.
- 26:22Speaker 2: at Southern steer 1705 North Redwood road in Saratoga Springs.
