- 0:23Music. And welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:47Corner podcast along with my partners, Brian Siegler and
- 0:51Jonathan Talley. I'm Curtis Wilson and this
- 0:53episode is brought to you by Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the
- 0:57Main Street Pharmacy in Blacksburg, your friendly
- 1:00neighborhood pharmacy Three O 1 S Main St., Blacksburg, VA
- 1:08fellas. What is going on, man?
- 1:12We back. We back.
- 1:14We getting we entering closer and closer.
- 1:17We we back, we back to do this every week.
- 1:20So that's how you know, we're we're about to punch it because
- 1:25when we go in every week, you know, we got content coming in,
- 1:28you know, we got games about to happen.
- 1:30You know that things are about to get real for the Hokies.
- 1:34Yeah, I agree. I mean, you just ready, man?
- 1:38I mean, I think we got some football, you know, this weekend
- 1:41and I got some high school games to go to, some middle school
- 1:44games to go to. So it it it's wide open, man.
- 1:49It's wide open. And and that's what you want.
- 1:52Best time of year? It's 100% on that tally, man.
- 1:55It's it's games going everywhere.
- 1:58You driving by schools now, you seeing the kids out there
- 2:00practicing. We get more and more news from
- 2:04every single pundit in the college football world.
- 2:08We're seeing more interviews, Andy Better, David Cunningham,
- 2:12all the guys that take sideline and the writers down in Roanoke
- 2:15at practice, seeing the stuff every day.
- 2:19It's it's tough to hold down because it is officially week
- 2:22zero. We got game, like you said,
- 2:24Tally, we got games this weekend that, that one Saturday
- 2:29afternoon. I'm, I'm hoping I know Brian's
- 2:31not going to be at home. I'm going to try to get in front
- 2:34of the TV and watch that game because I want to see what
- 2:36Georgia Tech looks like and, you know, and SMU later that night.
- 2:41Like, because although we don't play SMU this year, they're
- 2:45members of the ACC. They're going to be playing
- 2:46teams we are playing right. Yeah, and they, and, and those
- 2:49are two teams that people are kind of high on, or three teams,
- 2:53you know, Georgia Tech, some people got Georgia Tech as a
- 2:56pretty good team. Maybe one of our losses, you
- 2:58know, again, some people and Florida State's always good in
- 3:04the ACC as long as they're here, you know, till they leave, I
- 3:07guess. And then like you said, SMU,
- 3:10man, a lot of people are talking about SMU is a is a dark horse
- 3:15team this year. So it'll be good.
- 3:17Good week zero man, Great week 0.
- 3:20Yeah, I mean, it's it's one of those you got, you got some good
- 3:22matchups like you got to see, all right, so you got Georgia
- 3:25Tech, Are they a team on the rise?
- 3:27It's Florida State. Have they retooled the way
- 3:30everybody thinks they have? And and like you said, some of
- 3:34some of those unknown anomalies from an ACC conversation as far
- 3:37as SMUI mean, it's not a, it's not a matchup that's going to I
- 3:40think test them, but it is their kind of intro into being AACC
- 3:45conference team. We get to see them a little bit.
- 3:47And I'm looking forward to that team in particular seeing how
- 3:50they kind of move forward once they get into conference.
- 3:53Play 100% and we are actually at the end of the telecast tonight.
- 3:57We are going to pick those. It is our big screeners games of
- 4:00the week. We only got 2 to pick from so we
- 4:02didn't have to scurry up and down the the lineup card to
- 4:05decide what we're going to do later this evening.
- 4:08Also, we are going to go through the schedule and we are going to
- 4:12make our predictions of the Hokies season record.
- 4:15We're going to break it down. If you didn't join us last year,
- 4:17we're going to break it down four games at a time and kind of
- 4:21get to the end there kind of a little bit knowing the enemy,
- 4:24how we're feeling about the Hokies playing them.
- 4:27And then we're going to look at the position groups earlier
- 4:29tonight and it's sort of something if you if this, if
- 4:34you're new here, this is the first time because I'm looking
- 4:36up in the left corner. We got a lot more people
- 4:37watching than we normally have. We appreciate everybody out
- 4:41there. Every Tuesday of the season of
- 4:44the season, after the Hoagies have played, we do tell the
- 4:47truth Tuesday. And basically we recap the game.
- 4:51We ask what went well, what went bad, did anything happen we want
- 4:55ready for and what can we do better moving forward.
- 4:58We're going to do that every week.
- 4:59This week we're kind of telling the truth of how we are feeling
- 5:02towards each position group on the Hokie stock up, stock down
- 5:06or we feeling level. So that's what we got in store
- 5:10tonight. But fellas, I want to kick it
- 5:11off because out of nowhere recruiting pick back up out of
- 5:15the out of nowhere for me. Maybe I ain't been paying
- 5:18attention, but when you land a top ten player in the state of
- 5:23North Carolina, a top 247 player in Snoop Peterkin, 62172 out of
- 5:28Mount Tabor, a wide receiver in Winston Salem like that, that's
- 5:33in some ripples. Because Tally, I know you
- 5:36followed. Everybody was saying he was
- 5:38going to NC State. Oh yeah, I mean, I didn't pay
- 5:41attention to him because I thought he was going to NC
- 5:44State. What?
- 5:46Then you got to realize, man, you got funtail minds on your
- 5:49team. You're never out of it.
- 5:52So never out of it. And another thing I didn't know
- 5:54the kid played basketball as well.
- 5:57Yeah, yeah. So that's that's our second dual
- 5:59sport athlete in this class. That's pretty cool.
- 6:04So Micah Matthews and now Snick Peterton and I mean, this is one
- 6:09that I think we made some good, good progress late in the
- 6:13process because we, it looked like, like y'all said he was NC
- 6:18State bound. And all of a sudden, you know,
- 6:21so a couple of visits happened. There's some whizzing.
- 6:23It's like, hey, hey, you know, the Hokies are in play here.
- 6:26The Hokies are in play here. Next thing you know, you know,
- 6:29we we get that commitment and and that's big man, because I
- 6:33mean that that's again, Fontell going out there and pretty much
- 6:39getting getting the guys that he wants.
- 6:41Any anybody that he gets gets really deep into the recruiting
- 6:43process with. He seems to be able to pull in.
- 6:46And I mean that's a credit to him.
- 6:49It it honestly at this point, I mean, you know, I, I hope it
- 6:52doesn't have to happen, but you know, you got to make him if if
- 6:57you can do it, the highest paid non coordinator assistant in the
- 7:01country. It's like the $1,000,000.
- 7:03Man, he's pretty. He's pretty close to earning it.
- 7:07He's earning it on the field, He's earning it in recruiting,
- 7:10so. 100% How do you argue with that?
- 7:12I don't know. I know this happened Saturday
- 7:14and we're busy. Tally's got his son playing
- 7:16football. We're getting ready.
- 7:18We we've sent our kids back to school here.
- 7:20Did y'all get to see any tape yet on him?
- 7:23On. Peter can snook.
- 7:27Just go look at the first clip on any of them.
- 7:30I mean, I mean, it's been a, I've, I've looked at a couple of
- 7:35things, but from the one I've seen, I think it was just huddle
- 7:37tape. Go look at the first clip.
- 7:40He's running a kickback, he's running a punt back and it's
- 7:44stiff on one guy. Get to the end, get to the
- 7:47sideline and outrun everybody at 621-701-8170.
- 7:55And he played basketball. It's Trey Turner, you know what
- 7:58I'm saying? Same kind of body style kind of
- 8:00kind of speed from what I've seen and then you get into a
- 8:04couple of other clips it's like he's running away from people
- 8:07what I and I didn't watch a whole bunch I'm not going to
- 8:09lie, but again, it don't take you 2 hours to look at somebody
- 8:13and see if they can play ball there you.
- 8:15Go. First clip, running a punt back.
- 8:18Second clip, somebody threw him a fade and he caught it over his
- 8:23outside shoulder. Dove.
- 8:24Third clip, another diving catch, this 40 yards. 4th clip,
- 8:29runs the kickoff back. That's enough.
- 8:31What else do I need to see? And Fontell wants you so.
- 8:36And this is this is another kid that seems to be football first
- 8:40in, in terms of like, you know, you got basketball, you got
- 8:42football, but he seems to be a football first guy.
- 8:45You love to see that and I'm excited for him man, because I
- 8:50think he is the kind of Trey Turner that do it all type
- 8:53receiver, kind of do a little bit of everything for you.
- 8:56And I think we kind of, we had another cycle where you got kind
- 8:59of a traditional slot guy, you got kind of a red zone thread
- 9:02and now you kind of got this, this do it all receiver.
- 9:06So we're, we're again stacking bodies and, and, and getting
- 9:09them where they make sense in how we're trying to play, play
- 9:14offense and what our scheme is, is designed to do and kind of
- 9:18mixing up their skill sets a little bit. 100 percent, 100%.
- 9:21All right, before we flip it over to the next commitment,
- 9:24just a shout out to everybody listening tonight.
- 9:26Some of our regulars in here got Thomas out here talking about
- 9:30the team. Chris Lester, always good to
- 9:33hear from you man. Our Buddy Clark down in Roanoke
- 9:38and Mr. Drones. So appreciate you guys as always
- 9:42for listening. But let's talk about the next
- 9:45gentleman that committed a little bit earlier this week.
- 9:48Luke Stewie, a six foot 295 LB athlete, classified as an
- 9:54athlete out of Avon Lake. OH, just a three star, little
- 9:59bit lower than what we've seen, but background, do a little
- 10:04research. His dad Michael was a wide
- 10:07receiver. Looked up the stats had like 700
- 10:10yards played three seasons back from 94 to 97.
- 10:13Obviously if y'all didn't see Dwight shouted out him the other
- 10:18day. So obviously he's got that and
- 10:22again, it's Ohio. We always, you know, me and
- 10:25Brian long for tally join. We always talk about it's like
- 10:27if you can get some from Ohio, you get some from Pennsylvania,
- 10:30a couple from New Jersey and then a couple from Georgia and
- 10:33South Carolina and North Carolina.
- 10:36Then you doing shit right because you going to those
- 10:39football States and you pulling out.
- 10:41Don't care where they ranked now any any how anything on this kid
- 10:46yet that y'all seen or read about since we landed him?
- 10:51So this seems to be one that outside of the legacy piece,
- 10:55which is I think a big part of this, and that's kind of why he
- 10:58was on the radar that, you know, they had him into a camp.
- 11:01Apparently he really looked really good at the camp.
- 11:04And I think a lot of times guys that are in that kind of lower,
- 11:08lower three star ranking, you know, they go to a camp, they
- 11:12either find a good fit or, or or are able to kind of really go
- 11:15there and really stand out in in a particular way.
- 11:18That's how a lot of these guys get these offers.
- 11:20And I mean that that seems used to be what happened for him.
- 11:24Yeah, definitely. I've talked to my son about that
- 11:26a lot. And just, you know, sports in
- 11:27general, you never know what a coach is 100% looking for.
- 11:31You know, I mean, a lot of times they'll tell you, but every now
- 11:35and then it's a skill that can't be taught, whether it's high
- 11:38point in the ball or whether it's the way you speak, you
- 11:41know, whether it's the way you carry yourself and you're a
- 11:44leader through drills. It's it's something.
- 11:46So it's no telling like what they seen.
- 11:48But from what I've seen, I think he plays both sides of the ball.
- 11:52Send him on some defense as well.
- 11:54Ball skills are pretty good that that wide receiver room is
- 11:58packed, man. Like if you want to get on the
- 12:01field over there, you're going to have to do some work.
- 12:03So I ain't saying that he can't, but I'm just saying with him
- 12:06being able to play offense and defense, I mean, that helps him
- 12:10out to find a place on the field, you know, and, and again,
- 12:12like Brian said, him being a legacy probably is a big piece
- 12:15to that, which is good. I like to see stuff like that
- 12:18because the worst thing can happen is that somebody loves
- 12:22tech and they played at tech. They have a kid, he goes
- 12:28somewhere else and then he ends up turning into Steph Curry.
- 12:36You just, I'd rather be on the sidelines than be in the
- 12:40Olympics. And then we'd be saying, hey, we
- 12:44should have. So if somebody is, you know that
- 12:47that's that's part of that's part of recruiting, that's part
- 12:49of building the culture. So y'all keep doing what you're
- 12:54doing. They'll get Lauren Johnson's
- 12:55other son to next. The legacy too there.
- 12:58We go. Yeah, 100%.
- 12:59And looking at him tally, you're right, he does play both sides.
- 13:02He's playing a lot of inside slot receiver, but playing like
- 13:05a free. Looking at the tape here and
- 13:08it's on my left screen, he's playing free and he's playing
- 13:11strong. So he's playing inside the box
- 13:13and outside the box. And one of them was a pick.
- 13:16He he went straight over top of the guy and just took the ball
- 13:19from him. I mean, you know, so is what it
- 13:22is. So again, two more recruit
- 13:24pickups there. Hokies currently 36th rank in
- 13:28the country at like 87.8. That creeping back to that 88
- 13:33again, even with the 83. And I know some people like
- 13:37recruit rings don't mean Jack shit.
- 13:39Well, I think we can all tell you look who's makes the play
- 13:42offs, look who's always winning 910 games.
- 13:45And when we were winning nine and 10 games, those recruiting
- 13:48rankings were a little bit higher than everybody thought.
- 13:50So it does matter. All right, fellas, kind of the
- 13:55two-part of why we are here tonight.
- 13:57Let us talk about the hokey position groups and if that
- 14:01stock is up, if that stock is down or if it's like this.
- 14:05And by all means, if you're out there listening tonight and you
- 14:08feel like you got an opinion up or down, throw it in the chat of
- 14:11how you feeling. We'll definitely throw it in
- 14:14there. So I am going to start, got to
- 14:17do this, right. I'm going to start with Brian
- 14:19Talley because when I get to the last one, I got to leave with
- 14:22him first. That's why.
- 14:23No, that's fine with me. You still watching?
- 14:26I'm. I'm watching, I'm watching the
- 14:27chat, man. I'm watching the chat I need.
- 14:29I need to chat to help me out tonight.
- 14:32Need to chat to help him out. Need to help all us out.
- 14:34All right, but we're going to start.
- 14:36Where else will we start? It is going to be the
- 14:38quarterback room. And so Mr. Brian Siegler,
- 14:41quarterback room stock up, stock down same.
- 14:46I mean, it's stock up, man. It's stock way up there.
- 14:49There's there's three things that are playing a factor here.
- 14:52Number one, you're starting the season with the correct
- 14:56quarterback. Unlike last year.
- 14:59With the correct quarterback and you're starting the season with
- 15:02a quarterback that has started games for you in this system.
- 15:07So that that's that's number one.
- 15:09Number two, you now have a backup that regardless of who
- 15:15wins the job, a backup that I think is a better fit for what
- 15:18we're doing already with Kyron drones compared to what Grant
- 15:22Wells offered last year. So whether whether that next man
- 15:26up is pop, whether that next man up is Colin Schlee, we'll we'll
- 15:29know soon as far as who's winning that backup job.
- 15:32But whoever that is is going to be a better slot in fit than
- 15:40what we had last year. And then #3 is just depth.
- 15:44I feel like, you know, we have a lot better situation from a
- 15:48depth perspective than we had last year because of a lot of
- 15:52what I said in two. But now you've got three guys
- 15:55that have had some experience in this system playing in some
- 15:58games. Colin obviously started a couple
- 16:01games elsewhere. So you got a guy with with that
- 16:04type of experience coming in. You got pop with a little more
- 16:06experience. It's just top to bottom a a
- 16:09better quarterback room than what we started with last year.
- 16:12Tally what? About you Oh yeah no that
- 16:16definitely kind of like Brian said I mean we had so many
- 16:21unknowns last year. It's going to be probably going
- 16:23to be a lot of UPS. But like I said we had so many
- 16:26unknowns last year like going into the season and it's like
- 16:29well we hope what we hope it's like this year it's like this is
- 16:33happening. You know what I'm saying like
- 16:34this is going to happen. So again, I mean, you y'all know
- 16:38everybody watching knows man. But I will say something, you
- 16:41know, me and Chris, shout out to Chris Lester, great guy, man.
- 16:46He's a good friend to me. We we talk a lot about sports,
- 16:49but family as well. And he said something that was
- 16:53pretty profound to me when we got to talking about Grant
- 16:56Wells, he said and and and I was one of the people who was
- 17:01Grant's a great kid. I just didn't think he had the
- 17:04skill to get us to the next level, you know, and that was no
- 17:10knock on him. But Chris, again, me and him
- 17:12were talking and he said something like I said, it was
- 17:14pretty profound. He said all of these guys that
- 17:18are on the roster committed after watching Grant Wells play,
- 17:22after watching that team beat, you know, go set three games
- 17:26and, and three and seven, whatever we were three and
- 17:29whatever 8. 3:00 and 3:00 and 8:00.
- 17:32Yeah. After going three and eight,
- 17:35Grant was the quarterback. You know, all of these guys that
- 17:38came in, Kyron came in, Allie Jennings came in because they
- 17:45knew that this offense could go to another level.
- 17:48So Grant Wells didn't really hinder anything.
- 17:51He was a, and I don't want to say he was a stepping stone, but
- 17:55he took the chance to come to Virginia Tech to go through
- 17:58those games. And we were competitive.
- 18:00We played a lot of games that he played in with some kids that
- 18:05you know what, what else were they would have started in Power
- 18:095. Still no.
- 18:11And we were competitive in those games.
- 18:13And so it at least gave us a a backbone to show recruits, Hey,
- 18:21if you come in, we can get to that next level.
- 18:23You know, so Tebow could go talk to Kyron drone so Tebow can go
- 18:27talk to Quan Felton and say, Hey, this is kind of what it
- 18:30looks like. But you know, this X's and O's,
- 18:33we need the Jimmy's and Joe's, you know what I mean?
- 18:35So I got to give I got to give him a little bit of credit on
- 18:38that. I thought that was a a different
- 18:39perspective that I hadn't thought of.
- 18:42That was pretty good. And then, like I said, back to
- 18:45what we're talking about now, you know, Karen steps in and he
- 18:49does what he does last year and his stocks, you know, up
- 18:53tremendous. And then they go in, they get a,
- 18:56a, a veteran backup to go along with the young guys that we have
- 19:01in the stable as well. So just kind of bring some
- 19:04balance after your starter. When we get up on those games,
- 19:09when we go and beat these teams 42 to seven, like we know it's
- 19:14going to happen. You can get our starters out and
- 19:17you can get some back up, some work and they can go in.
- 19:19They continue to get their reps and work on their craft as well.
- 19:22So stock up on that room. All right, I'm with y'all stock
- 19:26up on this one as well. And and and a lot of what Brian
- 19:29and Tally both said a lot of that's intermingling.
- 19:31But I also think this and I always think this perspective,
- 19:35there's three quarterbacks powering's getting one reps the
- 19:38backup, whoever that is is going to get some a little bit of one
- 19:42Rep. They're going to work with twos
- 19:43primarily, but it's whoever the third quarterback is, is running
- 19:47practice wild more. So if that is Pop Watson, that
- 19:51is unbelievable for him, right? Pop go out there, run the
- 19:55offense, get those reps Don't matter who you're playing with,
- 19:58you're going to get live reps because you're the practice
- 20:00squad guy and that's awesome. If Pop wins the job and he's the
- 20:03backup, wonderful, Love it. But then to what Tally just
- 20:07said, now you're putting a veteran on practice squad.
- 20:10He's probably going to know exactly what to do in every
- 20:12situation, which is going to be getting us better prepared for
- 20:16the season. So that soccer room is way up.
- 20:19You got Dobby belt for it. Who, you know, came on campus,
- 20:23you see some other young guys in the recruiting class.
- 20:26So I'm not even talking this season, just in general that is
- 20:29through the roof. All right, Tally, I'm going to
- 20:32go. And the quarterbacks got to turn
- 20:34around and hand the ball off. So I'm going to hand the ball
- 20:36off to you. The running backroom, what we
- 20:39feeling like there right now? Stock up.
- 20:41Stock down. You know, you know what I'm
- 20:44going to say stock up as well on this.
- 20:46You know, we got some people that come back from last year.
- 20:50I like Bryce Duke. I hated to see him leave, but I
- 20:54can understand. But I like what I seen from
- 20:57Prelude in the in the Spring game.
- 20:59I know spring games don't matter and all this, but I'm just
- 21:02saying if we can use the plays that I've seen him run, I don't
- 21:07know if it's him, I think he can do it.
- 21:09But the plays that I've seen him run with, you know, using the
- 21:13running backside of the backfield and doing some
- 21:16different things like that, I'd I'd like to see that.
- 21:18So I'd say the running back room to stock up and then we we can
- 21:21keep Malachi healthy. You know, we've seen him flash a
- 21:27lot at over the last two years, but then, you know, injury hit.
- 21:31So we're going to go stock up. Brian Siegler, you know I'm
- 21:38going to go stock up too. I, I like what I've seen from,
- 21:42from Coney. I, I think you're going to get
- 21:48a, a tutor that you 100% know how to use the offense.
- 21:52I feel like the start of the season we were kind of working
- 21:55him in kind of seeing what he did best, where, where, where,
- 21:59what plays were going to be the home runs for him.
- 22:03I think as we got into that later in the season, we really
- 22:08utilized him a lot better. So I think I think you're going
- 22:11to see a a better utilized Tootin.
- 22:13I think Malachi seems to be at at his most healthy that I've
- 22:18seen him in the last two years heading into this season.
- 22:20I think that's a key element to to what we're looking at here.
- 22:25And like I said, Coney, Coney has has shown me something.
- 22:28I think he's going to be a really good compliment to that
- 22:301-2 punch and we'll see if some of the other guys like Prelo get
- 22:34in there. You know, we'll we'll see if if
- 22:38they make some some hay as well. So I'm very interested to see
- 22:42what what goes on with that room pass those kind of first two or
- 22:45three guys, but I definitely think stock up this year all.
- 22:48Right. I'm with y'all, I don't my
- 22:50percentage, it's a very small up, very small up based on what
- 22:55TuneIn Thomas did and what kind of Prelude did in the spring.
- 22:59Because after, after the first two guys, it is the unknown.
- 23:03We don't know what Coney's going to exactly be like on game day.
- 23:06Can PJ Prolu take some of those, You know, those gimmicks, slash,
- 23:10you know, trick plays that they kind of ran with him?
- 23:13Can they get that into a game element?
- 23:16If they can, it's going to be higher than I, you know, higher
- 23:20than where I am right now. But it's just a little bit up.
- 23:22It's not like the quarterback room, even though I like the
- 23:25guys behind them, it's just it doesn't have that dynamic where
- 23:29you just feel like, man, this room's really, you know, this
- 23:33room's really unbelievable. One through 123, it's just like
- 23:36one's really, really good. Two, it's healthy.
- 23:38OK, Three, if they run the right place for them.
- 23:42So just a little bit up. All right, we got to chime in
- 23:45real quick, not on this room, but Chris Lester wanted to say
- 23:48something way, way up, way up for the quarterback room.
- 23:53I don't disagree, Chris. I don't agree at all.
- 23:56Like stocks is like through the roof.
- 23:58All right, Brian Siegler, I'm giving you like the easiest one,
- 24:03the easiest one, the easiest one.
- 24:05This is the easiest one. I'm I'm timing how long it's
- 24:09going to take us wide receiving room.
- 24:12Way up, Way up. I mean, there's really no other
- 24:19way to to, to phrase it, man. I mean, you, you, you throw
- 24:24Ollie Jennings back into a mix of very effective receiving
- 24:29corps that you had last year. You got Aiden Green coming on
- 24:33and then you got guys like Brody and Chan's coming in as as
- 24:37freshmen looking to make a little bit of noise as well.
- 24:41You know, you throw in a chance Fitzgerald here or there and see
- 24:44if he's taking another step in development and maybe either one
- 24:47or two other guys that we don't even know anything about yet.
- 24:49You know, Tucker Holloway, if he gets healthy through the season,
- 24:53you know, he makes, you know, some sort of impact on this
- 24:55group. So I.
- 24:58Mean keep naming them. We left out, we left out Steven
- 25:02Gosnell, we left out Aiden Green.
- 25:05I mean there's names on top of names on top of names and then
- 25:08you got them stacked up enough where you got, you know, senior
- 25:12leadership, then you got guys right behind them.
- 25:14Then you got the young freshman coming in that are able to watch
- 25:16the older guys. Like it is amazing that Fontell
- 25:22has has built that room. The coaching staff in general.
- 25:24But if y'all new here, if you're new to Virginia Tech and Hokie
- 25:29nation, like we ain't used to that many athletes being in that
- 25:33that wide receiver. Now we've had some good wide
- 25:35receivers come through here. Don't not don't.
- 25:37I'm not saying that, but when you look up and down that roster
- 25:40and you look at, you know, when you get to college, the stars go
- 25:43away. So we ain't just thinking about
- 25:45the stars right now. We're thinking about what we've
- 25:47seen proven on the field. And then the guys that have come
- 25:51in, the freshmen that have come in, we see them going against
- 25:56good defensive players in spring, in fall practice and
- 26:01they look like they belong there.
- 26:03So that is way stock up. Just I mean, just two seasons
- 26:08ago, we were talking about this being arguably the worst wide
- 26:11receiver core in power Five, right?
- 26:15And and that's no disrespect to the guys that were here that
- 26:17were part of that. It just the decimated roster
- 26:20that we had at the end of the Fuente era, especially at the
- 26:23skill position group was crazy. And in two, two to three, 2 1/2
- 26:28cycles, really, you went from that to arguably the best wide
- 26:34receiver core in the ACC, especially when we talk about
- 26:37depth. Yeah.
- 26:39I mean, it is crazy. It is crazy.
- 26:42All right, we got we got multiple people chiming in on
- 26:45this. Before I get my opinion, let me
- 26:46throw this up here. We got Kevin.
- 26:49Yeah, To the moon, The bad boys out there.
- 26:52Yeah. Way up.
- 26:53Way up, way up. Low country living Absolutely.
- 26:57All the way up and and I'm with y'all, this is one of those
- 27:00things where you buy a stock at like $3, you forget about it and
- 27:05you walk around like a year later and it's like worth 800
- 27:08and you're like, whoa, what happened?
- 27:10This thing was not worth that. And and tell you said list them
- 27:14Felton Jennings, Lane Gosnell, Aiden Green, Chance Fitzgerald,
- 27:19Brody Chance. What about XTB?
- 27:22You saw him a couple times last year break.
- 27:27We couldn't even get that deep. Didn't even think about that
- 27:31name. It's crazy and.
- 27:33You've got guys like Takahi that we've heard about doing good
- 27:35things before. He got back, got his name.
- 27:38He was, he was last year. He got hurt like he was ahead of
- 27:42some of the other guys and he got hurt like that room was
- 27:45super deep, man. And what that creates when you
- 27:48got that going on is competition.
- 27:50You can't just go to practice and chill.
- 27:54You got to go to practice and you got to you got to go to work
- 27:58because the next guy is trying to get on the field.
- 28:00So you can see that you can see the competition, man.
- 28:04You can see everybody wants it like it is.
- 28:07It's crazy. All righty, all right, tally,
- 28:11back to you on this one. Back to you on this one and
- 28:17tight end room, your room that you played in up, down level.
- 28:24Yeah, we're going to get to that.
- 28:25Let me see what Miss. Miss Sarah he is talking about.
- 28:27Miss Sarah, welcome to the show. We got to correct you, because
- 28:31if you're talking about Malik Washington, he did not come from
- 28:34Virginia Tech. He came from another place that
- 28:38has Virginia in it, the University of Virginia.
- 28:41So he's a great player, but he didn't come from here.
- 28:44And we don't like them. We like him.
- 28:46Oh he don't like them? I didn't see that comment and
- 28:49wanted to say that but we don't. What tidying room?
- 28:52Tidying room up down level. Yeah, so y'all can beat me up.
- 28:57I'm going to go down, man. I got to go down.
- 28:59And the reason I'm going to go down is because we lost.
- 29:04We lost, right? You know, like he left.
- 29:08Now, I'll say this, I think that because some people say, well,
- 29:12we get, you know, we get Gallo back and we seen Biggie, they
- 29:17were going to be here regardless.
- 29:18Like they're here so you could interchange them, you could take
- 29:22right out and put them in if we're going to run the ball
- 29:24because they are better blocking backs than he was.
- 29:28But at the same time, it was like he was a defense, like he
- 29:31was a mismatch, you know what I'm saying?
- 29:33Like him being on the field, he was a mismatch.
- 29:35So I think we have the wide receivers that can take those
- 29:39catches, which is great, but we're just talking about that
- 29:42tidy in room when you lose a tidy in.
- 29:45That was, I think he was third on the team in receptions last
- 29:48year. No matter how you slice it,
- 29:51yeah, no matter how you slice it, go back and watch the tape.
- 29:55He was he did what he was supposed to do in the past game.
- 29:58So no disrespect to the guys. I like.
- 30:01I like what I'm seeing out of Saint Germain.
- 30:03I like what I'm seeing out of Benji.
- 30:04I think Benji's probably the most athletic out of the tight
- 30:08ends. Gallo's going to bring some
- 30:10senior leadership, so that's good.
- 30:12He's been there nine years. I just hope, you know, he's
- 30:14healthy and everything. You know, he he's he's able to
- 30:18go out the way he wants to go out.
- 30:20But I'm going to go stock down on that just because of that
- 30:22reason, because he left. Ron.
- 30:26It's stock down, but it's it's just a little bit.
- 30:31And what it's, it's, it's mostly to do with what Tally said.
- 30:34I mean, you got to replace a lot of production from a receiving
- 30:38standpoint with Daquan Wright moving on to Ole Miss.
- 30:41So that that's a big one. Everybody that listens to this
- 30:44podcast, they they know how I felt about Daquan Wright.
- 30:50So we don't need to rehash all that.
- 30:52They know that I knew he was a dude.
- 30:55So there's no way that you lose that off your team and there's
- 30:58not some degree of drop off there.
- 30:59Now, what I think is going to happen is that there's going to
- 31:03be some replacing of that production, but it's going to be
- 31:05by committee. You're going to see more guys
- 31:08get involved in the offense in more specialized ways instead of
- 31:13having a guy like right, that could do pretty much everything
- 31:16in the passing game. So you get Gallo back little
- 31:20more of the the short intermediate stuff.
- 31:23A guy like Zeke Wimbish can do those deep crossers, those
- 31:25seams. So we, you know, you kind of end
- 31:28up, you know, replacing him in terms of role with a a few other
- 31:34guys, but in terms of just having the one guy that can go
- 31:37out there and just be a mismatched nightmare, you don't
- 31:39really have that anymore in the passing game.
- 31:42But I think overall blocking the levels going to raise up a
- 31:45little bit. That's why I said it's only
- 31:46going to be a little bit of a difference, but I definitely
- 31:49think it's a small step back in that that position group.
- 31:52Yeah, 100% on that. It is stock down.
- 31:55When you lose a guy tally stat loud with 28 receptions, 366
- 32:00yards, 13.1 per reception. That's a huge thing to lose.
- 32:06Now Benji Gosnell had his flashes last year, had some good
- 32:10plays and we're getting Gallo back.
- 32:13But it's Gallo off of me. And like you said, he ain't no
- 32:15spring chicken, right? Gallo's an older guy.
- 32:18Gallo did have over 600 yards just two years ago.
- 32:21So it's definitely there. But it's down because I because
- 32:27Wright was so dynamic like in in as far as you say.
- 32:31Well, well, he won the best blocker.
- 32:32You know what if you threw that man on the field with the big
- 32:37three right now? I mean you put you twisting up
- 32:41defenses because against a nickel corner or against a
- 32:45smaller cornerback right could block you go out there against
- 32:49the linebackers asked him to do a hardship off the IT won't
- 32:52gonna be there, but it is stock down unfortunately for that
- 32:55room. All righty Brian, we're back to
- 32:58you and obviously clearly there's only one group left.
- 33:01I also wanted to start with you because I needed to hear Tally's
- 33:06second point of view after. Him, I'm I'm going to be calm,
- 33:09be calm. You know, I want you to be calm.
- 33:12But Brian, what you've read, what you've heard, where is this
- 33:16offensive line at right now? I'm going to say that the stock
- 33:20is up. It's not a resounding up, but I,
- 33:26I think we're in a much better position than we were even at
- 33:29the end of last year for several reasons.
- 33:31Number one, you bring in a guy like Cunningham that at worst is
- 33:35going to be a very good depth piece for this unit, right?
- 33:39And then you got two other guys in Brody Meadows and Lathe Ganem
- 33:43that seem to be coming on in fall camp after post spring.
- 33:48They're pushing some of the guys on that starting line for some
- 33:52playing time. So now you're talking about
- 33:55eight guys, you know, with maybe a 9th, you know, slipped in
- 34:00there in terms of depth. Whereas last year I think we
- 34:03were more like maybe six at times 7, but mostly 6 for most
- 34:11of that year. So you get a little bit of
- 34:14wiggle room if, if there is a guy or two that go down this
- 34:17year and that I think that is where the improvement is the
- 34:20most is having a little bit of wiggle room with this offensive
- 34:25line. If there is an injury here or
- 34:27there, not feeling like it's the end of the world.
- 34:31But in terms of of front end, we, we've got to hope that they
- 34:34actually take a step talent wise because I don't think we're
- 34:38going to see a whole lot of new faces on the line.
- 34:44Jonathan Talley. Oh, it's on me.
- 34:47It's on you. Well, I'm going to actually say
- 34:51stock up a little bit, you know, because as Curtis put it, if you
- 34:56buy stock at $3, sometimes it's got to go up, you know what I'm
- 35:02saying? It might go up to three O 5.
- 35:06So I will say, I mean from last year, you go back and you look
- 35:12at the early games, Tootin was getting hit 3-4 times in the
- 35:17backfield. You know what I'm saying it he
- 35:20couldn't do nothing. He couldn't.
- 35:23We we couldn't get no rushing yards.
- 35:24I think at one time we might have like 20 rushing yards one
- 35:27game and then maybe against Purdue and then Karen breaks a
- 35:30run and had more rushing yards in that run than we did in the
- 35:34whole game or something. It's crazy stats for what we
- 35:37were doing. But again, the offense changes a
- 35:41little bit. People get a little bit more
- 35:43comfortable. We don't, I mean, we didn't lose
- 35:46nobody. So it ain't like we had a stud
- 35:48that we lost and we're like, OK, well, we just got to replace
- 35:51him. So you got pretty much everybody
- 35:53back. So at least you got some more
- 35:56experience, you know what I'm saying?
- 35:58You got some experience and you got some people behind you that
- 36:00if you don't get your ass in gear, you going to come out.
- 36:05You got, you ain't just stuck in there, you know, you're seeing
- 36:09different people get in there. And then like even with
- 36:11Cunningham, people's like, is he going to start?
- 36:14You know, I, I seen him, he can play.
- 36:17I seen him in the spring game. I again, you can watch somebody
- 36:20play. If you watch offensive line and
- 36:23you watch the feet, you can tell if somebody can move their feet
- 36:26or not. I mean, it ain't that easy.
- 36:28But I mean, if you watch it enough, you can say, OK, yeah,
- 36:30he can move a little bit for that size he can play.
- 36:33So if he's not 100% the starter and he's having to push
- 36:38somebody, that means that it's some good competition going on.
- 36:41That means somebody don't want to lose their spot.
- 36:43So I'm OK with that. So I would say up slightly until
- 36:49I see a game, but we will be in Nashville here shortly and I
- 36:54will be looking at it close up and personal.
- 36:57So we'll we'll figure out how the stock is after I leave that.
- 37:01But right now, we're going to say stock up a little bit.
- 37:03Absolutely. So a couple things before I
- 37:05speak. Here's a few people chiming in
- 37:08big up from Thomas. We got bigger, stronger, more
- 37:13experience. It is more experience.
- 37:16Chris let's you got two things to say, Coach foot for president
- 37:18and a little bit more about coach truck.
- 37:21That's a big piece right there. And I'm with Tally.
- 37:23I'm stocked up a little bit. I'm stocked up a little bit
- 37:27because when we kind of got the right stuff going, we looked
- 37:31better. We were by no means like that
- 37:33elite top 25 line where, you know what, if you beat us, we're
- 37:39just going to have a bad day. It was that we were maybe
- 37:43average to maybe slightly above average.
- 37:46And now from the reports we're getting, you know, David
- 37:50Cunningham was with us last week feeling like it could be eight.
- 37:53That report that came out at the end of last week about basically
- 37:58there was a day where it was get what Leif Ganem little more at
- 38:03center, big more back at right guard.
- 38:06So now again, it's that depth. It's but it's been we tally, we
- 38:11joke about that nickel, but for what this team was last year, if
- 38:16it's just a marginal increase of being a little bit better in the
- 38:19offensive line, we saw what happened when this thing got
- 38:23going right. If it's just marginally better,
- 38:26that's a long way. That's a long way from where it
- 38:28was at the beginning of this year last year or this line last
- 38:32year. All right, let's flip it over to
- 38:35the defensive side of the ball now and let's start with the
- 38:39defensive ends. Brian, where are you feeling up,
- 38:43down. Same.
- 38:45I got a feeling the ankles say down because shit I just I don't
- 38:50think he can say down. I'm, I'm not going to say down.
- 38:54I, I, I, I'm going to say up. I'm going to say it's a marginal
- 38:57up. What I think we, we know we're
- 39:01going to get with APR right? We, we know, we, we've seen him.
- 39:04We, we, we saw what he can do last year.
- 39:06We know we're getting, I think the big thing is that I think
- 39:10having a full offseason with kind of understanding who our
- 39:13personnel is, I think you're going to see big jumps from
- 39:16Nelson and Burgos and that's where we're going to see that
- 39:19stock go a little bit higher. And I think you got guys like
- 39:23McRae and and Jordan McDonald still kind of working in there
- 39:26as well that give you a little bit of added depth behind those
- 39:29big those first three. So I, I think the stock's up.
- 39:33I don't think it's up significantly, but I think it's
- 39:35a, you know, it's going to be a a nice little steady uptick
- 39:38there. Let me ask Tally, Tally, let me
- 39:40ask you this before I flip it over.
- 39:41How much more can it go up defensive end wise when the
- 39:46defensive ends deal what they did last year on a national
- 39:49stage with Saxon tackle for loss?
- 39:52Well, it's, it's kind of hard to, it's kind of hard to put it
- 39:58in the words what it is. But the main thing is, and it's
- 40:01for me, I'm going to just go ahead and put the line together
- 40:04because it's so hard. We have somebody who is.
- 40:09I'll say either stock has to be up or stock is the same, which
- 40:12is fine. But when you have somebody who
- 40:14has a great year like APR did and people say, well, you know
- 40:17what you get with him? Well, you really don't because
- 40:19he could take a step forward, which would be awesome, or he
- 40:23could be right where he was last year because people are doubling
- 40:26them. And then people are doing
- 40:28different things to make sure that they're game planning for
- 40:30him. And then somebody else, you got
- 40:32other people on the line that's going to step up and they going
- 40:34to take, they can take those tackle for loss, they can take
- 40:36those sacks. So even if his sack numbers dip
- 40:41just a little bit, just because he's there, somebody else is
- 40:45going to eat just because he's there.
- 40:48A linebacker may not get somebody to that second level
- 40:52because they are saying you guys don't leave him, stay on him and
- 40:57let that linebacker, we going to try to make the linebacker miss
- 41:01with our running back. You know, we going to put them
- 41:03one-on-one or something and then the linebacker goes and makes
- 41:05the tackle. I know that's a lot at one time,
- 41:07but I'm just saying APR is exactly what he needs to be.
- 41:12He is a distraction for a offensive coordinator before he
- 41:15even steps on the field. I promise you, everybody on that
- 41:18offense is looking for 52. You damn right they are.
- 41:22So that I got to say stock up just because of what he's done
- 41:27and how he's made it and because he's getting in people's heads.
- 41:30But like I said, don't be alarmed if it's a couple of
- 41:33games and you don't see a sack or a multi game sack form.
- 41:39We got to look at that as a whole because of him being there
- 41:42makes that line so hard to block.
- 41:45All right, well, let me do this because you said you wanted to
- 41:48roll them into it. I'll, I'll talk about both sides
- 41:50at the end. What about the defensive tackle
- 41:52room, man? I mean, you got Fuga coming back
- 41:56and you mentioned just a second ago, people's going to be
- 42:00everybody's looking for 52. Well then there's going to be
- 42:03somebody that pulls up the tape and says y'all realize #16 that
- 42:07mother is a damn all ACCD tackle.
- 42:11We need to lock them too. Where are you the tackle room?
- 42:13Is that up? I mean, it's got to be up
- 42:16because again, I think that the kids last year, young men last
- 42:20year did a great job. You know, like we have fell
- 42:25Darius on here, nobody. Well, we had a couple people
- 42:29that felt like if he took a step forward, it was going to be a
- 42:33big year for him and that defensive line.
- 42:36And when he got his opportunity, he went in and he did what he
- 42:39had to do, like he shine, but it was more of a collective unit
- 42:43thing that they did. You know, people, not people's
- 42:47pilot was in, Kendrick's was in, Fuga was helping Federus was in
- 42:52doing his thing. Like you just said.
- 42:56The same with APR. They're going to have to look at
- 42:5816 and say what are we going to do about him in the middle?
- 43:02You know what I'm saying? Like, are we going to chip him?
- 43:05Are we going to have to send a full back at him?
- 43:07Are we going to not be able to run a not be able to run a
- 43:11screen because he's fast enough to get to the line back to get
- 43:14to the quarterback if we let him through?
- 43:17Like it's a lot of planning that goes along with having those
- 43:20players. And I don't think that we are
- 43:23aware of we have stars on the team now, you know what I'm
- 43:27saying? And I don't just mean just the,
- 43:30oh man, we got good players like you got nationally ranked
- 43:33players on your team that people are going to game plan for.
- 43:37Like if I was the other defensive end, Keyshawn Burgos,
- 43:41Cole Nelson had a pretty good year last year.
- 43:44Whoever's on that other side, I, they better be licking their
- 43:47chops, man, because they're going to be looking to that
- 43:49other side and worried about him.
- 43:50And it's Showtime to eat on that side.
- 43:52So I, it, it should be fun, man. I I got to say stock up on the
- 43:57whole line, but for those reasons.
- 44:00Got it. Sigla D Tackle.
- 44:03Man, so you know, you got Fuka coming back, got an extra year
- 44:08here. He's he's probably going to be a
- 44:10captain, whether he's a guy that has that or designation like we
- 44:16were talking about on the preview panel or whatever.
- 44:19He's going to be in the steady rotation for this group.
- 44:22But then he bring in three key transfers.
- 44:25Amneus Peebles, you got Kamari Copeland from JUCO, you got
- 44:31Kelvin Gilliam coming in. You also got some of the other
- 44:34guys that are already on your roster taking another step.
- 44:37You got Malachi Madison, you got Gerard Johnson.
- 44:40You're throwing in a a youngster like Emmett Laws in the end of
- 44:43this group. This room is way, way up in my
- 44:46opinion, and I think it's because of that depth piece that
- 44:49we're talking about. I think last year we had three
- 44:51to four guys that we could rely on consistently.
- 44:55They were steady eddies that you do what you can get out from
- 44:57them. I think Aeneas Peebles raises
- 45:00the ceiling of this unit and I think all the other guys they
- 45:04brought in raised the potential level for this unit.
- 45:07Plus you have the added depth of having being able to go really 6
- 45:11deep at this group instead of four or five deep.
- 45:15Yep, that's the big piece right there.
- 45:16And real quick. Got it.
- 45:17Just a couple folks chiming in. The defensive ends up Burgos
- 45:21expecting a big year. Low country.
- 45:23Yeah, the me it for the defensive ends.
- 45:26It's slightly up. I wish CJ McRae was healthy.
- 45:29I wish we knew right now that that leg was completely healthy
- 45:32where he could play. I would feel even better about
- 45:35that room. Defensive tackle to what Brian
- 45:38just said, that room went from being where it was really three
- 45:46cog pieces to where you feel like is it 4, is it 5?
- 45:51Is it six that can actually play and to to what Chris is saying
- 45:56it right here, because the honest truth is, and I know JC
- 46:00Price, we talked to him. Y'all, I got a feeling there's
- 46:04going to be times JC is going to stick people's and go stick APR
- 46:07on the same side and say put everybody over there.
- 46:11Give me one on ones with some of these young guys and make them
- 46:15pay. Because the 2nd it's it's not if
- 46:18it's not the if it's when they it's when that D line makes them
- 46:22pay pops the quarterback causes a fumble, massive tackle for
- 46:25loss. They have to sit there and say,
- 46:28well, if these guys are going to eat all day.
- 46:30Can we consistently continually chip and continually send the
- 46:33full back and keep the tight end in or we eventually going to
- 46:36have to just we don't have to play it straight up and then
- 46:41that's what we want, right? That's a decision.
- 46:43And we've said all these names and haven't really even talked
- 46:45about Curtis Perry yet and, and how he, you know, he might be a
- 46:49situational piece in this group. Situational 3 tech situational
- 46:53big end. So again, it's it's it's up.
- 46:59I ain't putting it at the wide receiver level of up, but it's
- 47:02up. All right, Brian, let's flip
- 47:04back. Linebacker room, linebacker
- 47:07room. And did you get a chance to see
- 47:09some of those interviews last weekend?
- 47:12Which ones? The what?
- 47:14Lawson. And with all those guys, it
- 47:16seems like everybody, with the exception of Brumfield, is all
- 47:19over the damn place. Yeah, it looks like they're
- 47:23they're they're definitely cross training that Will and star
- 47:27position pretty heavily. You know, you got Brumfield
- 47:32that's kind of locked in. It sounds like he's going to be
- 47:35kind of that guy. Mike.
- 47:38You got guys playing star, guys playing Will.
- 47:40You got Kelly at star. You got, you know, Caleb Spencer
- 47:44playing a couple spots. You got Caleb Woodson playing a
- 47:47couple spots. I mean, I think outside of
- 47:50Keanta Jenkins and Sam Brumfield, everybody else is all
- 47:53over the place. You know, Keanta is going to
- 47:57probably be that, that first guy at * and then Brumfield there at
- 48:03Mike. And we'll see who lines up at
- 48:06Will and we'll see how much they interchange that position.
- 48:08And we'll see how much they move guys from from start of Will and
- 48:12back. And I just love the depth that
- 48:16we've created because I mean, you got guys like Gabe Williams
- 48:19in the mix here. You got even Jade McDonald still
- 48:23in the mix there, Jaden Keller still getting his perennial
- 48:28fall, can't mention of of being in the mix.
- 48:31So it's going to be interesting to see kind of where the chips
- 48:35fall with with those, those two positions.
- 48:38I think we're we're pretty solid.
- 48:40Brumfield, Mike Keonta, the first guy up at star.
- 48:44How those rotations work after that is anybody's guess.
- 48:49So up, it's still up. Yes, still up because of the
- 48:53depth. Tally.
- 48:56I'll say up off of 1 clip, I've seen Keonta Jenkins try to take
- 49:00somebody's head off the other day on like a jet sweep or
- 49:04something. I don't know why he's doing that
- 49:07to his own players in practice, but if I see, I seen that.
- 49:11So I mean, I got to say up. But now, you know,
- 49:14realistically, I mean, who did you lose?
- 49:16You didn't lose nobody. You brought some people in to
- 49:18help and you got some more experience.
- 49:21And again, you brought some people in with some experience.
- 49:25You brought in Brumfield, you brought in, like you said, Caleb
- 49:28Spencer Woodson's a year older. Keanu Jenkins is the veteran in
- 49:34the room. Like I didn't even mention
- 49:37Lawson, You know what I'm saying?
- 49:38Jaden Keller. Somebody's got to have,
- 49:41somebody's got to step up. And again, it goes back to your
- 49:44defensive line. It's a team sport.
- 49:47If you can keep those big offensive lineman from getting
- 49:51to that second level, getting out there and and and mashing on
- 49:56your on your linebackers and then they just need to run and
- 50:00stop the ball and come downhill and fill holes, that is going to
- 50:04make your that's going to make that room better.
- 50:06So it's an overall thing. But just as that room, I say
- 50:09that the backers up as well all. Right, Thomas agrees with you
- 50:13with saying the backers are up. Chris laying a bold prediction.
- 50:17Hokies going to increase Chris. They do that.
- 50:21They do 50 Chris. That means they will increase
- 50:24one sack per game from last year, One additional sack.
- 50:28And I know some people say, well, that doesn't sound like a
- 50:31lot. One additional sack again.
- 50:34Yeah, that's a lot. Opt in as a shit ton.
- 50:36As a lot. As a lot I think.
- 50:39Half the snack would be a respectable #1 sack is a big
- 50:42jump, but I think they could. Yeah, that I think the potential
- 50:45is there and I think, you know, we we've talked about it.
- 50:50I think you had nauseam at this point with what it means to have
- 50:54a guy like Brumfield that is a veteran Mike, that knows how to
- 51:00be the quarterback of the defense, because that was not
- 51:02some, that was not an asset the linebacker corps had at the
- 51:06start of last season and. And that's why for me, that room
- 51:10is a significant step up because of Brumfield, because it's
- 51:13having that guy that knows where everyone needs to go, where
- 51:17everyone needs to line up, how everything needs to get done.
- 51:20And it's not, it's not like he doesn't have he has the
- 51:23experience. He has in game experience.
- 51:25He's played against some good teams.
- 51:27It's one of those things I, I think I said to both of y'all
- 51:29last year, it might have been a state of the program.
- 51:31I don't know if I was that drunk at night when I said how much
- 51:35better the linebacker group played from year one to year
- 51:38two. And I said, you imagine if you
- 51:40had Dax, it might where a guy who knew how to line up
- 51:42everybody who knew exactly where to go, even though he might not
- 51:46be quick enough to get there every time, but he's putting
- 51:48everybody in the right spots. And that's essentially why what
- 51:52it is with Sam Brumfield coming in.
- 51:53Right. All right, Tally, give me some
- 51:56safety room thoughts. Up, down.
- 52:00Safety room, I'm still, I mean, again, I want to go up on
- 52:04everything, but I got to go Safety room.
- 52:06I'm gonna probably go about even on that right now just because I
- 52:12need to know if if Stroman is going to get kicked out of
- 52:15games. I need I need to know if he
- 52:19going to be in there or not. You know, shout out to Strohman.
- 52:22Strohman is a is a dog man. He's a headhunter.
- 52:25But we need him on the field. You know, we need him on the
- 52:27field and we know we got some players back there, but we also
- 52:32need to know what do we have back there?
- 52:35You know, we know we got we've heard a lot about Reddish.
- 52:40He's a freshman. He's coming in.
- 52:41We heard about, you know, some different people back there in
- 52:44the backside, but I'm going to go about even just because we
- 52:48again, I, we didn't lose anybody.
- 52:51We, we got the, we got the, the group, the boys are back in
- 52:54town. We just need everybody to be
- 52:56healthy and everybody to stay in the game and not.
- 52:59We don't need no targeting. That's right, look who joined us
- 53:02here. Look who's back.
- 53:04Where you been, Andretti? Andretti, man.
- 53:06Wait, what? The game came out, That's what
- 53:08it was. We didn't play he.
- 53:11Just came coming up for air from the NC double.
- 53:14A You ain't even, you ain't even played him yet.
- 53:16I got to find I got to get with him.
- 53:18I ain't played him yet either. Oh man, Brian, where are you on
- 53:22this room? So.
- 53:25I'm I'm right now I'm gonna hold.
- 53:27I'm gonna hold at at steady. I'm I'm hold it the same here
- 53:31for this, but I think it has potential to go up.
- 53:35So when I'm, when I'm looking at this group, you know, Jalen
- 53:39Stroman, he's he, he, he's a dog.
- 53:42But like Tally said, you know, we we've seen situations,
- 53:45whether it's injuries or whether it's targeted and keep him off
- 53:48the field a little bit more than we would like.
- 53:50Last year in general, injuries and targeting kept our safeties
- 53:55off the field more than we wanted.
- 53:57It was already a thin group last year, especially with the with
- 54:01the youth. Outside of those first two, I
- 54:04think we're in a little bit better situation started this
- 54:07year. We really have three guys with
- 54:09some significant experience at this point looking at Stroman,
- 54:12looking at Jones, looking at most Phillips at this point.
- 54:15They played a lot of significant snaps last year looking for most
- 54:20to, you know, take a take AI think a pretty good step from
- 54:23year one to year two. I think the big question is
- 54:26going to be is does what does that rest of that safety room
- 54:29give us this year? You know, does you know Quinn
- 54:32radish step in there? Does Cam Fleming take a step?
- 54:36Are we looking at Dev, Devin, Alvis doing anything?
- 54:38So I think those three are going to be the big question Marks and
- 54:42how much are we going to get from them and how much are we're
- 54:45going to ask to get from them, whether it be because of
- 54:48injuries or targeting or anything else?
- 54:50Because I think the first three there, I think we feel, if not
- 54:54super great about. We definitely feel comfortable
- 54:57putting them out there for significant snaps.
- 54:59All right, I am going to be slightly down on this room and
- 55:02it's not for the three guys that y'all talked about in Stroman,
- 55:05in most Phillips and in Jones. I think I'm more disappointed
- 55:10that we haven't heard names. We've only heard Reddish's name
- 55:13a little bit, but it's more of Devin Alvis has been here a
- 55:18couple years now, Fleming and Noah Jenkins and a lot of those
- 55:22guys have been here a few years now and we're not hearing them
- 55:26come up. And usually with safeties,
- 55:29usually about the second season, guys can start making names for
- 55:32themselves, right? And that worries me a little
- 55:35bit. That worries me a little bit.
- 55:36That's why I'm slightly down because if I had heard one of
- 55:39those names that we didn't hear last year and we heard this year
- 55:44like in camp, but we saw something, you know, in spring
- 55:46ball that Brian Talley or myself, like it called our eye,
- 55:51that will make me feel better. So I'm slightly down now.
- 55:53Is there potential to go up? Because I'm going to be straight
- 55:57up with you. Yes.
- 55:57Brent Pryor, he loves to talk to us fans, he loves talk to the
- 56:02media. He he's great on the mic.
- 56:05He lets people come in and watch practices multiple times a week,
- 56:08right? We know they're getting about 20
- 56:09minutes segment, which is a lot of time, y'all.
- 56:13But the question is if he got the ace in the hole and it's one
- 56:15of these safeties, ain't nobody talking about that Vanderbilt
- 56:20game going force a fumble, get a pick and then we're going to be
- 56:23like, look, coach, coach being slick.
- 56:26Coach didn't want to talk about him because he knew he had a
- 56:28fourth safety in that room. That's where I'm interested,
- 56:32Brian. You get another easy one.
- 56:33You get another easy one. Brian, I get, I get a layup.
- 56:36You'll be a layup. Well, we got to have a layup to
- 56:39end this segment here how we feeling about corners?
- 56:44Up you got another year development for Lane.
- 56:49You got arguably the best cornerback in the ACC and Dorian
- 56:53Strong coming back in. Here you got another year
- 56:56development for Blake, Braylon Johnson, Dante Lovett.
- 56:59I'm really excited to see them grow into a bigger role in that
- 57:03cornerback room. And then you got guys like Penex
- 57:07Williams. You got Joshua Clark as a true
- 57:10freshman coming in there and making some noise.
- 57:14I haven't even named a couple other guys.
- 57:15So I mean, I think this room, yeah, I got love it earlier.
- 57:19I got love it in. There.
- 57:22Yeah, but I think, I think this, this, this room is deep right
- 57:25now. I think we can go about 6 deep
- 57:28and feel pretty confident, but I don't think we'll need to ever
- 57:31get that deep in the bag as long as we can stay healthy.
- 57:36Tally, tally. You got to go up, man.
- 57:39You got to go up and we going to go all the way back.
- 57:41I know y'all might be tired of me saying it, but I'm going to
- 57:44say it again until y'all get it in your heads out there in the
- 57:48chat. When your defensive line is
- 57:51better, it makes your whole defense better.
- 57:54Start in the trenches when that defensive line can get on that
- 57:57quarterback and make him throw that ball just a split second
- 58:01faster than he really wants to. Dorian Strong will go get it.
- 58:05Monsieur Delano, go get it. You got again, like you said,
- 58:10Braylon Johnson back there, Dante Lovett, those guys heard a
- 58:13lot about Christian Williams. Christian Williams was hurt last
- 58:15year, you know, so he's back. Joshua Clark, we've seen him on
- 58:20a couple of flashes. I mean, a lot of these kids that
- 58:23these coaches that went out and got, man, they're coming in
- 58:25ready to play body size wise, like most of the time from the
- 58:31Virginia Tech. We're kind of used to.
- 58:33We were thinking, you know, man, we're going to have a couple of
- 58:35years of development, you know, get the get the weight up.
- 58:38No man, they coming in ready to play.
- 58:40Look at most Phillips last year. Back to what you said, Curtis,
- 58:43when you said who's going to be the one that flashes, man, you
- 58:47never know nowadays, like with the, with the, how they've been
- 58:50recruiting and how these kids come in, everybody has trainers,
- 58:55Everybody comes in, you know, knowing what they need to do and
- 58:59have their body ready and man, they're ready to get out there
- 59:01and play. So all it takes is like you
- 59:04said, one play, Hey, this is your shot.
- 59:06I need you to go in and do your job.
- 59:08Boom, you going in and get a pick, you go in and get a a, a
- 59:12fumble, you know, cause a fumble.
- 59:14You know, the next thing you know you're in the rotation.
- 59:16So I'm excited to see that. But stock definitely up on that
- 59:21DB room. Yeah, 100% the stock is up on
- 59:26the DV room. I mean, obviously you mentioned
- 59:30Brian best corner in the ACC and Dorian strong and probably, I
- 59:35mean it is you can make Just Cause the best duo in the ACC
- 59:42with him and Mansoor. I definitely think they are a
- 59:45top 20 duo in the country. I think they're a top 20 duo in
- 59:49the country straight up. But I think it's also because we
- 59:53saw Lovett play last year and we saw Braylon play and it's like
- 59:56these guys are holding up. They're true freshmen.
- 59:59Their bodies are already ready. And then to add on top of that.
- 1:00:03We heard the name Christian Williams that came out of
- 1:00:05coach's mouth a couple days ago. Hadn't heard that name, so he
- 1:00:08clearly did something there. And then Joshua Clark.
- 1:00:11And we saw Joshua Clark on field of spring ball.
- 1:00:14We saw that like, OK, this kid can play.
- 1:00:19And Curtis And Curtis. Guess what?
- 1:00:21What? Tell me somebody.
- 1:00:22No, no, you didn't miss nobody, but we didn't even mention.
- 1:00:25Look who they're going against in practice every day.
- 1:00:29Iron sharpen and iron, baby. Look who they going against in
- 1:00:32practice every day you got to go against that wide receiving
- 1:00:34room. You better be getting better or
- 1:00:36you going to have to transfer to Blue Valley State or whatever
- 1:00:40the place is north of state. I don't know.
- 1:00:44You have to go somewhere to play If you playing against them and
- 1:00:47they make you look silly and you ain't getting no better every
- 1:00:49day. So I mean, when you going
- 1:00:51against top wide receivers in NFL caliber players, that's
- 1:00:58that's what you want. So. 100% All right, well our UVA
- 1:01:03fan is asking here, do we have game by game predictions before
- 1:01:06the season starts? Well, guess what?
- 1:01:08That is coming up after the break with our sponsor from Main
- 1:01:12Street Pharmacy. I can probably save you a lot of
- 1:01:15money and I can take a lot better care of you.
- 1:01:18That's pretty much it. My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm
- 1:01:20a pharmacist. I own and operate Main Street
- 1:01:23Pharmacy here in downtown Blacksburg.
- 1:01:25My brother's a pharmacist, I'm a pharmacist, my uncle's a
- 1:01:27pharmacist, my dad's a pharmacist.
- 1:01:28I remember he would give me M&M's to count in little pill
- 1:01:31counters. This is something I've always
- 1:01:33done and I'm just lucky that what I know so well is something
- 1:01:37that I can do and feel good about it and get back to.
- 1:01:39People. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 1:01:42defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 1:01:44you're getting optimal care for the lowest price possible.
- 1:01:47Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 1:01:50I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 1:01:52doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 1:01:54counter. If there's something that isn't
- 1:01:56commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 1:01:59in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 1:02:01that, we'll make it. TaylorMade medications.
- 1:02:03Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 1:02:06What motivates me, I get to take care of people and limit
- 1:02:08Blacksburg. That's all neat.
- 1:02:13All righty, we are back and now it is time that we made our
- 1:02:18season predictions. By the way, I got I got to call
- 1:02:21Thomas out here. Thomas 15 and no, don't work no
- 1:02:24more bro. You got to be 16 and no to win
- 1:02:26the national championship, 15 and no don't get you there
- 1:02:28anymore because you got to win the ACC.
- 1:02:32Then you got to win your first playoff game, your second
- 1:02:34playoff game, then the national finals.
- 1:02:38So 15 and O don't work. I'll let you edit that to 16.
- 1:02:41But let's let's get it going here.
- 1:02:43We did this last year. We're taking it four games at a
- 1:02:46time from the beginning all the way to the end.
- 1:02:49Let's just go ahead and throw this out.
- 1:02:51Sheldon could not be here tonight.
- 1:02:52He's doing some traveling. Couldn't jump it on.
- 1:02:54So for these four four games, Shelton Moss, our esteemed
- 1:03:00colleague is saying 4 and up, four and up.
- 1:03:05All right, I'm going to leave this segment off because I'm
- 1:03:07going to let y'all have the last two segments.
- 1:03:09I am agreeing with Shelton. I do think we are going to go
- 1:03:13four and O in the first four games.
- 1:03:16I think the 1st 3 opponents, I don't think there is much to say
- 1:03:19about that, right? You know, you look at who you're
- 1:03:23playing, you feel we are significantly better on them.
- 1:03:27We would have to play literally the worst fucking game of the
- 1:03:30season to lose to those teams. Now the Rutgers game is going to
- 1:03:36be a game though. But they've made the mistake of
- 1:03:39getting rid of the running quarterback and they have the
- 1:03:42unfortunate pleasure of Planet Lane Stadium now.
- 1:03:47OK, I'm going to answer Grayson's questions real quick
- 1:03:51here. The one that worries me the most
- 1:03:55of the first four is Rutgers straight up.
- 1:03:58So that's where I am 4 no after gate.
- 1:04:02And that's why I'm going to let Tally go next.
- 1:04:06So Cali. So I will say y'all making me do
- 1:04:12this? I don't want you to even do this
- 1:04:14this year. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:04:15I don't even. You going to call and pick
- 1:04:17nothing. I don't want to pick nothing, I
- 1:04:19just want to go pay attention. But if I got to do it because
- 1:04:24Curtis has got saw contraption back here is tied to my toe,
- 1:04:30that's going to blow my toe off. If I don't make a the selection,
- 1:04:34I'll say four no on that first four games.
- 1:04:41I will say to Grayson's question, he said what games
- 1:04:46were what game worries me the most out of the first four.
- 1:04:49I'm probably going to say ODU. I'm not that worried about Vandy
- 1:04:56for whatever. I just that going to ODU thing
- 1:05:00kind of kind of blows me a little bit, you know what I'm
- 1:05:03saying? So I ain't going to say we're
- 1:05:04going to lose, but it kind of worries me a little bit going
- 1:05:06down that elevators getting messed up and stealing stuff and
- 1:05:11all that kind of crazy stuff happening.
- 1:05:12Like motions may run high and then that Ruckus game, I think
- 1:05:16Ruckus just lost their starting linebacker or something like
- 1:05:19that. Oh, they did.
- 1:05:20Yeah, they just lost somebody. Yeah, they just lost it.
- 1:05:23I think it's that starting middle linebacker they just
- 1:05:25lost. But if I am worried about the
- 1:05:29Rutgers game, like Curtis said, being at home helps all that.
- 1:05:33Rutgers is going to be a very physical game.
- 1:05:35So that'll take me into the next 4 when we talk about them.
- 1:05:38I think the Rutgers game gives us a little bit of headache
- 1:05:43going to the next game. I think we win that game, but I
- 1:05:45think it's going to give us a headache going to the next
- 1:05:47games. SO4 and O in the first four.
- 1:05:50Four and O Bron Siegler first four and then answer Mr.
- 1:05:53Winbusher's question here. Hey, hey, we're a, we're a clean
- 1:05:57sweep here, man. We're a clean sweep.
- 1:05:59I got four and O out the gate. The Rutgers game is definitely
- 1:06:05the one that worries me the most.
- 1:06:09It it's actually worrying me less than it did before.
- 1:06:11They named their starting quarterback the information
- 1:06:15about their linebacker, but that's a team that is very well
- 1:06:20coached. They while they don't
- 1:06:23necessarily have the best roster, they don't have a whole
- 1:06:27lot of glaring holes in their roster.
- 1:06:31So it's a, it's a team that is going to give you 4 quarters of
- 1:06:36football every time you play them.
- 1:06:38And that, that's where you, you know, you hope you don't have
- 1:06:41one of those first or second quarters where you kind of
- 1:06:44sleepwalk and all of a sudden you're down 10 and you're
- 1:06:47playing from behind against the physical team.
- 1:06:50That's what you don't want. But I think we still come out on
- 1:06:54top in that game. And, and to Tally's point, I
- 1:06:56think that game definitely plays a factor in, in our October, but
- 1:07:03I don't, I, I, I do still think we come out on top in that one.
- 1:07:06All right, we are now going to flip it to October.
- 1:07:09I know I got some people out here putting this up.
- 1:07:11Russia's going to be stiff. I agree.
- 1:07:13Now we got the middle four and this is the late September
- 1:07:16through October. I'm going to go to Walmart 1st.
- 1:07:20Sheldon says we're going to go 5 million in this stretch with
- 1:07:23losses to Miami and to Georgia Tech.
- 1:07:27So he's bookending losses at the late September and late October
- 1:07:32tally. Because you already kind of let
- 1:07:35it in there, man. Yeah, I'm, I'm going to go to,
- 1:07:37I'm going to go two and two as well.
- 1:07:40I don't even, I'm not going to pick though, because I don't
- 1:07:42know what games to pick on them. But I'm going to say we'll go
- 1:07:45500 on that just because of the travel time that we'll be going
- 1:07:50through. And then coming off those first
- 1:07:52four games, you know, Rutgers being a very physical game, you
- 1:08:00don't never want to think about injuries, but it's football.
- 1:08:03What happens? Do we have any of that?
- 1:08:05I think we're going to go down and beat Miami, though.
- 1:08:07I'll say that you can pick whatever other two losses you
- 1:08:09want. I think that we're going to have
- 1:08:11a vendetta that game. I think we're going to go beat
- 1:08:14Miami. And I may change some stuff
- 1:08:15later on, but right now I'm going to say I'm going to say
- 1:08:202:00 and 2:00. You're you're picking that
- 1:08:24you're picking that like struggle game against Rutgers,
- 1:08:28revenge game against Miami and then maybe that let down
- 1:08:31overlook game against Stanford in that West Coast travel.
- 1:08:34I don't see it but. Robbie got in his head.
- 1:08:37Robbie got in his head last week talking about the damn bye week
- 1:08:40shit. Robbie got in your head, didn't
- 1:08:42he? Fuck Robbie man, why don't you
- 1:08:45do that to? Me.
- 1:08:47You. Know Robbie.
- 1:08:48You know you did. That's it.
- 1:08:50I OK, Brian, go ahead. Tally's at 2:00 and 2:00 in the
- 1:08:53middle 4. I'm at 2:00 and 2:00 as well.
- 1:08:57I'm getting there basically the same way Sheldon got there.
- 1:09:03I could talk myself in the three and one here.
- 1:09:06So just just to Full disclosure, I could talk myself in the three
- 1:09:09and one. If we weren't playing Miami, at
- 1:09:12Miami, coming off of Rutgers, I would give us a good shot in
- 1:09:16that game. I think just those factors that
- 1:09:18play there. And I think to, to Tally's
- 1:09:23point, if we, if we beat Rutgers and beat Miami, that Stanford
- 1:09:26game would be a, a, a prime let down game.
- 1:09:29But I think with a loss to Miami, you're going to, you
- 1:09:32know, circle the wagons a little bit, get back on track, knock
- 1:09:36off Stanford before you get to buy, go out and pound the fuck
- 1:09:40out of BC. I think Georgia Tech is going to
- 1:09:43be one of those, you know, kind of weird games that we always
- 1:09:48run into. I, I was, I was looking at that
- 1:09:52game and looking at another game that kind of leads off the final
- 1:09:55four is finally like, is that going to be that one game that
- 1:09:59we lose that we maybe shouldn't? That's kind of where I'm at with
- 1:10:03those. And I kind of I, I, I went back
- 1:10:06to, to Georgia Tech on that one. So let me let me get Georgia
- 1:10:11Tech and Miami losses two and two in the second floor.
- 1:10:14All right, y'all two and two, Sheldon two and two, tally two
- 1:10:18and two. I am not two and two.
- 1:10:22I am walking in here and I am saying we are going three and
- 1:10:25one in these next 4. But I am agreeing with you
- 1:10:29Brian. I think the loss is going to
- 1:10:31come to Miami because I think is that Roosters game is going to
- 1:10:34be physical. It's a short week for us now
- 1:10:38Let's see. Can I change my mind?
- 1:10:41Can we change our minds? We do weekly predictions.
- 1:10:42Hell yeah we can. Right.
- 1:10:44Because Miami's also. Based on right now information
- 1:10:47once we get more information. It's going to change after the
- 1:10:50first week we go beat the fuck out of, we're going to go beat
- 1:10:52the fuck out of it. And when people are going to say
- 1:10:54we're going to win the national championship.
- 1:10:56So yeah, it's going to change. It's three and one, but because
- 1:10:59it's it's what these guys are alluding to, that Rutgers game
- 1:11:01is going to be physical. If it was a Saturday, I think I
- 1:11:05could convince myself we could go down there and beat them.
- 1:11:07But unfortunately it's Friday night, so it's a short week.
- 1:11:10It's a flip back. Why do I think we're going to
- 1:11:13win the other three? Because I think after that loss,
- 1:11:15I think it's going to be close. And I think it's going to be one
- 1:11:18of those things. They're going to be like, let's
- 1:11:20go to California, let's stomp down the smart kids, let's get
- 1:11:23our break and let's go stomp down these other two kids.
- 1:11:27Because I think BC doesn't have a shot.
- 1:11:31PC really does not have a shot. They're rebuilding.
- 1:11:33They're trying to flip their offense to a Bill O'Brien type
- 1:11:36offense, which again, I'm fine. Bill O'Brien type offenses.
- 1:11:40I think we can handle that. And then Georgia Tech, they
- 1:11:43scare me, but it's something that Thomas put up.
- 1:11:47Oh yeah, Thomas, Yeah, I want. To put that on there, I don't.
- 1:11:51I'm with him. And This is why I think we beat
- 1:11:53Georgia Tech. I don't think they have the
- 1:11:55death. I don't think they have enough
- 1:11:57to handle us beginning to end. So we'd have to do what Brian
- 1:12:02said. We'd have to sleepwalk through
- 1:12:041/2 to lose Jordan, 1/2 a football to lose the Georgia
- 1:12:07Tech. So I am three and one, all
- 1:12:11righty. We made it to the last four
- 1:12:13games of the season and I'm going to throw it up here before
- 1:12:16I kick to Brian Shelton has us going three and one in the last
- 1:12:21four games and he is saying we are going to take an L at
- 1:12:25Clemson or to Clemson. Brian Siegler, where are you
- 1:12:29standing on this? I am also three and one with a
- 1:12:33loss to Clemson. I think we actually go and
- 1:12:37handle our business in the Dome. That's going to be a kind of a a
- 1:12:43game that sets up the next week, though.
- 1:12:45I feel like that is going to be a little bit of a battle and I
- 1:12:50think we're going to come around even though it's a home game.
- 1:12:52I think we're going to give Clemson every damn thing they
- 1:12:54want, but I don't think we quite get it closed out in the end.
- 1:12:59I think we go and pound Duke pretty good.
- 1:13:01I don't think they're going to be a very good.
- 1:13:02Team pause. Pause, man, pause.
- 1:13:07You said we going to go pound Duke.
- 1:13:08That's hold on, let's do it all. Right we go, we go.
- 1:13:17Take it to do. It's pretty rough too.
- 1:13:21Ron is a three and one in the last.
- 1:13:23And and UVA is going to be UVAI mean we got them at home.
- 1:13:26We saw what we did at Lane Stadium N it's only going to get
- 1:13:29uglier at Lane Stadium all. Right tally.
- 1:13:34I got two and two here. I'm going to just go ahead and
- 1:13:37tell y'all I can never pick us to win in that fucking Dome
- 1:13:42until we win. I think we got, I mean, I don't
- 1:13:45know, I ain't looking at people's rosters like that for
- 1:13:48real so far. But from what I've seen, I think
- 1:13:51we got a better setup than Syracuse because they got a
- 1:13:56brand new coach. I always give coaches kind of
- 1:13:59like project like you got to have that year where you get
- 1:14:02acclimated to the school unless you just had a dynamite takeover
- 1:14:06and you know, you just going out and beating the fuck out of
- 1:14:08people. Like I don't see Syracuse being
- 1:14:10that kind of team. But I can never pick us to go to
- 1:14:14that Dome and do what we supposed to do no matter what
- 1:14:17the record is. So that's one of my losses and
- 1:14:20then it's going to be a toss up between Duke and and Clemson, to
- 1:14:25be honest with you. For me, that's just what I had.
- 1:14:29I can't pick which one. That may be a let down, but
- 1:14:34we're not losing the UVA. I'll go ahead and say that.
- 1:14:37So I said two and two QS and one of those schools would be a loss
- 1:14:42if we did it. But again, looking at the
- 1:14:45looking at the record, looking at the, the, the, the games and
- 1:14:48schedule, that's going to change real quick depending on what we
- 1:14:53do at first week and 2nd week. So all.
- 1:14:57Right, I couple things I'm going to throw before I before I make
- 1:15:00my final picks here, I'm going to just throw a couple things
- 1:15:03about numerous pieces. That's why Thomas says also they
- 1:15:07have a shitty defense. So y'all y'all what y'all
- 1:15:10picking up they? Do He's right.
- 1:15:11He's not wrong. The building of Chris Lester
- 1:15:14right here is next. Chris says four and O.
- 1:15:19Yeah, Chris said eight and O88. We can say 8 and O this.
- 1:15:22Is building towards an 11 win season so if.
- 1:15:24We get to 8 and O. No matter what who we play next
- 1:15:28in those eight weeks, there's going to be some people
- 1:15:32suspended off of X or Twitter or whatever you call it.
- 1:15:36I promise you, the universe don't want to see Virginia Tech
- 1:15:39be 8 and O because some of y'all already be a little bit too
- 1:15:42wild. And I'm saying that, Jeremy, But
- 1:15:46if we get to 8 and O, I'm reporting some of y'all
- 1:15:51motherfuckers, I'm going to be acting up.
- 1:15:56Oh, God, I got a couple more to hit here.
- 1:15:58Grayson, he got this. He got that.
- 1:16:06Thomas making a point. We've only played up there two
- 1:16:09times in the last 20 years or so.
- 1:16:11Actually, it's been two times in the past 20 years.
- 1:16:17All right, so I'm sitting here and y'all going to probably
- 1:16:20think I'm crazy because y'all thought I was fucking crazy last
- 1:16:23year and I'm just going to put it.
- 1:16:24Curtis, we know you're crazy. I mean.
- 1:16:27Y'all, you just had a life, you. Just had a big kind of dirty
- 1:16:30bastard like, yeah, you kind of crazy.
- 1:16:33Founders Brewery, if you want to sponsor us, we'll be The Dirty
- 1:16:36bastards over here. But I'm sitting here and I'm
- 1:16:39just freewheeling. I told y'all eight wins last
- 1:16:42year if we started the right quarterback, and I think if we
- 1:16:45had started the right quarterback last year, we would
- 1:16:48have won eight games. I don't doubt that one bit.
- 1:16:51I think this year we are starting the right quarterback.
- 1:16:54We have a veteran offensive line.
- 1:16:57They may not be the best that they're growing.
- 1:17:00We have a deep wide receiver room.
- 1:17:02We have a 12 back punch. Tight end room could get better,
- 1:17:06but at least it's some veterans. At least I'm not dealing with a
- 1:17:08tight end room. That is a bunch of young guys.
- 1:17:11They've all played significant reps and the defensive side of
- 1:17:14the ball that last year in certain games, it just felt like
- 1:17:20old times. It felt like old times where we
- 1:17:23were just knocking the shit out of people, stacking at will.
- 1:17:27So as I get here to these last four games, we have not won in
- 1:17:30the Dome in 26 years, 26 years. It was 1998.
- 1:17:39Dwight Dick was a senior. Al Clark was a quarterback.
- 1:17:43It's the last time we won. And if you don't recall, if
- 1:17:46y'all remember, NCAA back in the day used to have the craziest
- 1:17:49games. That was one of them, was the 98
- 1:17:53game that we won was one of them.
- 1:17:56I think they snapped that because I think it's what Chris
- 1:18:00Lester said right here, which Chris, I saw it.
- 1:18:04These kids don't know about that Dome.
- 1:18:07It's not up here for them. And then I sit and look at the
- 1:18:12other three games or two at the back end.
- 1:18:16I think it'd be funny as hell if we got Manny Diaz fired his
- 1:18:18first year. Dude, I'd I'd laugh my ass off
- 1:18:21at Dad and UVA. We see where they are.
- 1:18:23They are a mess. And then you look at Clemson and
- 1:18:3013 years ago, we sat there right we could not do got Jack shit
- 1:18:34offensively. There are certain people in the
- 1:18:37Virginia Tech community that swears to God they had our
- 1:18:39playbook on both sides. Maybe they did, maybe they
- 1:18:43didn't. That was that was the turning
- 1:18:46point of the program. It's where we've been for 13
- 1:18:51years. We've been wanting to get back
- 1:18:53there, right? We, we, we saw a glimpse of it
- 1:18:56in 2016 and 2017. I think it's time to flip the
- 1:19:01script. They beat Clemson seven in one
- 1:19:04in conference will get us to the ACC title game.
- 1:19:10Y'all just heard it. Yep do do the math.
- 1:19:12Do the math of what I just did is.
- 1:19:15That 11 and one it's. 11 and one and and I have two thoughts of
- 1:19:20the ACC title game. And I know I'm I know some
- 1:19:22people probably laughing at me in the the the comments, but
- 1:19:28here's my thought on that. One of two things is going to
- 1:19:31happen to Miami after they beat us.
- 1:19:34Either they are not going to lose a game head so big.
- 1:19:38So either they're going to be 12 and O in that game or going to
- 1:19:41be playing Florida State and they're going to be 11 and 1.
- 1:19:43So it's the latter. Because yeah, they're they're
- 1:19:46not. They're not going to be a stable
- 1:19:49and capable program for 12 games in a row.
- 1:19:54So and Thomas, I'm going to completely.
- 1:19:58If you ever seen Grayson McCall play, he ain't always cracked up
- 1:20:01to be. Everybody likes NC State because
- 1:20:04of Grayson McCall. Grace McCall plays a couple a
- 1:20:07couple teams down in Coastal. He ain't that good.
- 1:20:11He's been less since Jamie Chadwell left.
- 1:20:15Hold on. Yeah, I'm at 11:00 and 1:00.
- 1:20:19Tally is at 8:00 and 4:00, bronze at 9:00 and 3:00, and
- 1:20:22Shelton is at 9:00 and 3:00. So.
- 1:20:27Write it down, but I. Like what Tally said, we're
- 1:20:29going to be changing our minds all throughout this.
- 1:20:32And if I drank too much, that's what that's what it is.
- 1:20:35I mean, you got to, that's what it's about, so.
- 1:20:39I don't know, man. I'm excited though.
- 1:20:41I can say that. I can see, you know, I can see
- 1:20:47I. Don't see six and?
- 1:20:48Six, I can see Curtis's. I can see Curtis's 11:00 and
- 1:20:521:00. I can see 11 and one before I
- 1:20:56can see six and six, barring catastrophic.
- 1:20:58Injuries to a significant portion of the roster, right?
- 1:21:01So I mean, I'm, I'm excited, I think.
- 1:21:03That this is going to be a fun year and again, if it does
- 1:21:08happen, if it does happen, I will say I have been saying for
- 1:21:12the last couple of years I don't know everything but I know just
- 1:21:16about everything so y'all need to listen to me all right?
- 1:21:20You lose by. You lose by a lot.
- 1:21:22You lose. By a little.
- 1:21:24You win by a little, then you win by a lot.
- 1:21:27I think this is our year that we win by a lot because last year I
- 1:21:30still feel like that was the we won by a little even though we
- 1:21:34won by a lot. But I'm saying those games were
- 1:21:36still kind of competitive. I think we just go in here and
- 1:21:39we just beat people this year and once I see us actually do
- 1:21:42that a couple of times, y'all know I'm going to get on here
- 1:21:46and. Start acting crazy.
- 1:21:48I'm going to tell you right now I'm going to get on here and
- 1:21:51start wearing masks. I told y'all I was going to get
- 1:21:54it. We did that last year though.
- 1:21:57We. We.
- 1:21:57Man, I told y'all I was going to get a tattoo.
- 1:21:59What I. Say I was going to get a tattoo
- 1:22:00if we do you did you said ACC. That's the ACC I can't remember
- 1:22:06matter of fact. Don't remember it.
- 1:22:08No. Nobody even think.
- 1:22:09About it, because I ain't. I don't want to do it.
- 1:22:11I'll go back and find all the old episodes.
- 1:22:13I'll go back. And find you even remember.
- 1:22:15What I said is that state. Of the program.
- 1:22:17I can't remember. I said I'd get a.
- 1:22:19Tattoo if we do something. But whatever that is, we need
- 1:22:24to. Do it, but nobody.
- 1:22:26Remember it? So I said if we make the ACC
- 1:22:29championship game, you won't get a tattoo.
- 1:22:32Something like that, but I'm I'm.
- 1:22:35Excited, man. What did Andretti say?
- 1:22:37Oh, he said we need to put our foot on the OD.
- 1:22:40U's something. Oh, he's being nice.
- 1:22:44Is that fart box? What?
- 1:22:45What is that? What's that?
- 1:22:48Supposed to be, yeah. We need to, we need to spell it
- 1:22:51out for me, Andretti. We do need to go down and do.
- 1:22:54Something crazy to. To ODU and Andretti ain't trying
- 1:22:58to get. Kicked off of YouTube Game track
- 1:23:01Kicked off of. YouTube all.
- 1:23:04Righty all right, so there's a predictions write them down do
- 1:23:08whatever. I mean we do this shit for fun
- 1:23:11y'all it's fun to sit here when we when I said this is what we
- 1:23:14going to do guys think about it. It's all first of all, that's
- 1:23:18what I meant right there. Oh, Andre.
- 1:23:23We love you, man. We love you man.
- 1:23:25Thank you for being back. Remember, we're we're we're on
- 1:23:28Tuesday nights about nine O clock.
- 1:23:30Take a break from the game and come listen to us.
- 1:23:32We enjoy your stuff, man. So I real quick.
- 1:23:37So before we wrap up everything tonight, we going to do big
- 1:23:39screeners because there's two games to watch this weekend.
- 1:23:42We already talked about them at the top of the program.
- 1:23:44We going to make predictions. We want some fun graphics for
- 1:23:48you next week when we actually have games.
- 1:23:49We're picking. We're just going, we're just
- 1:23:51going to talk about it this week and our goal.
- 1:23:53We also. I hope is unveiling a new part
- 1:23:58of big screeners. We ain't going to tell y'all
- 1:24:00what that is yet, but it's going to be a lot of fun with somebody
- 1:24:05we know very well. All right, Georgia Tech, Florida
- 1:24:09State, Florida State, the current line is -10 that's down
- 1:24:132 1/2 points since last Friday when I looked at it.
- 1:24:16Which one of y'all want to predict this one?
- 1:24:18First, take Georgia Tech. Take the money.
- 1:24:23Take. The points take the points.
- 1:24:25Take the points. I don't know if they win, but.
- 1:24:27I'd take the points that line going down for a reason.
- 1:24:31Yeah, that if that line was like 8. 8 1/2 I think I'd I'd be
- 1:24:36right on it, but you're in the full 10.
- 1:24:39That's tough to take. All righty.
- 1:24:46See, I feel. Like this is one of.
- 1:24:48Those trick games because you feel like 10 to 14 is the right
- 1:24:51number, right? By the way, Virginia Tech show
- 1:24:54you are right. It was 2000.
- 1:24:55It was Michael Vick the last time that won there.
- 1:24:59So the last time we won, there were two Vicks on the team.
- 1:25:03That's a long ass time ago, right?
- 1:25:07Like 10 is that number, right? 10 is the perfect number for
- 1:25:09this game because you feel like it's going to be about 10
- 1:25:12points. So does Georgia Tech fuck it up
- 1:25:15in the end and give like a cheap one away?
- 1:25:19I don't think they won't because I think Brent Key, if you
- 1:25:22watched him play Georgia last year, he plays them a little
- 1:25:25closer to the best 'cause he had nothing to lose in that game and
- 1:25:30he should have. He should have went for some
- 1:25:33more risk, but he didn't. I'm with y'all Georgia Tech take
- 1:25:36the points. Plus it's in Ireland.
- 1:25:39All that weird time and shit, you don't know what's going to
- 1:25:41happen. Weird stadium.
- 1:25:42All right, next one, new ACC member SMU travels to Reno, NV
- 1:25:49to play to the Wolfpack of Nevada.
- 1:25:52This is a tougher one. SMU 25 1/2 points.
- 1:25:58They are laying Wolfpack that's. A lot of points, man.
- 1:26:03That's a lot of points. Like I don't care.
- 1:26:05Who it is? Why is that even a?
- 1:26:06#25 1/2. That ain't even a number.
- 1:26:10You know what cool. The only cool 25 that was was
- 1:26:13Barry. Buns.
- 1:26:14Like 25 is not a number that I want to roll with.
- 1:26:20I'll take SMU in the points. You know why y'all know y'all
- 1:26:23many points Nevada averaged last year on offense.
- 1:26:26How many? Like 17 y'all know how much S?
- 1:26:29Y'all saw? SMU play, if you try to play a
- 1:26:31stick, they can score, I think. I think that's.
- 1:26:35Like a. 5614 game, if it's not I, I, I think it's an absolute
- 1:26:40blowout. SMU's got some cooking.
- 1:26:44I, I, I also think, I don't think that's a game we can gauge
- 1:26:47SMU by. Even if they blow the doors off
- 1:26:50them, it's a bagging. Now if they struggle with them,
- 1:26:52that'll tell us more than anything that first game.
- 1:26:56I think it's going to tell us about those teams a lot.
- 1:26:58So yeah, I think it's so it's hard to really gauge a a ton.
- 1:27:03On the first game, but I think if you see SMU go out there and
- 1:27:08it's a really close game, like less than two scores, you can
- 1:27:14derive something from. That I think anything.
- 1:27:17I, I, I don't think they have to cover for, for you to say that
- 1:27:21SMU is, is as we expected. But I think if it is in that
- 1:27:25like 10 to 14 point range for a win or, you know, God forbid
- 1:27:28they, they go out there and, you know, lay an egg and lose, I
- 1:27:32think that'll tell us more than a blowout or just, you know,
- 1:27:35somewhere ±5 from that spread. Yeah, I think SMU probably if I
- 1:27:41had to. Look at it week 1.
- 1:27:43Defenses usually are a little bit farther along than offenses.
- 1:27:48I would. Think SMU probably would win
- 1:27:51that game by about 21 points, but I would be scared to put say
- 1:27:55they're going to win by 26, you know, 4 touchdowns.
- 1:27:59I don't know. So I would, I'm taking the Wolf
- 1:28:04Pack. What about that first game?
- 1:28:07What are we going to learn? From what do y'all think we
- 1:28:08learned about those teams? Because I think that's, I would,
- 1:28:12I wish that that would have just been a stateside game because
- 1:28:14that noon kick is just brutal. Yeah, the the location I think
- 1:28:19in time kind of. Screws with the logistics
- 1:28:22because both teams are having abnormal logistics and that it's
- 1:28:26not just like standard stateside neutral site logistics.
- 1:28:29Like you're, you're taking cross pond flights, you know, you're
- 1:28:34playing at a completely different time.
- 1:28:37Like you're basically playing, you know, how many was it?
- 1:28:408 hours behind, seven hours behind.
- 1:28:44So, yeah. So it's a, it's a completely
- 1:28:46different way of managing an away game or a neutral site game
- 1:28:52than than if it would be here. Even if you're playing, you
- 1:28:55know, out at the Rose Bowl or something.
- 1:28:57I mean, it's still a completely different scenario for them to
- 1:29:00manage. So it's going to be interesting
- 1:29:02to see who ends up doing well in that game.
- 1:29:07I don't think you can derive a whole lot from it other than
- 1:29:12kind of seeing where the holes are in each of those teams,
- 1:29:15whether it's, you know, certain position groups and things like
- 1:29:17that. I think that's where you'll kind
- 1:29:19of see the most that you can take away and, you know, move
- 1:29:22into another week and say, all right, well, we saw holes here.
- 1:29:25We saw holes there. I'm just interested to see what
- 1:29:29Florida. State looks like.
- 1:29:30Like, they really have to revamp who they are.
- 1:29:33You know, they lost, not saying it can't, but we kind of seen
- 1:29:37how Novell did when he got there, how he build it up.
- 1:29:41He wasn't just like a flash in the pan coach.
- 1:29:43Like it took him a couple of years to get it to where he
- 1:29:46wanted. And then those players that he
- 1:29:48brought in, you know, some of them are in the league now.
- 1:29:52You know, the quarterback that that that he he built that
- 1:29:55program on his program on, you know, the wide receivers that he
- 1:29:59brought in things like that. And I'm not saying that he
- 1:30:02didn't bring in more good players.
- 1:30:03I don't know that roster that great to know.
- 1:30:06But I will say I'm not as high on.
- 1:30:12Florida State as I was. Last year, I just feel like
- 1:30:16looking at him from what he's done in the past, he looks like
- 1:30:19a coach that he'll build up a little bit more than OK, I'm
- 1:30:23just going to retool that that. Will tell the story and I think
- 1:30:28that game will tell the story. About both those teams and how
- 1:30:30we can project them going forward.
- 1:30:32So, yeah, All right. Anything else out there?
- 1:30:37Anything breaking? Nothing.
- 1:30:39I know of nothing yet, man. Nothing yet.
- 1:30:44All right, somebody call. Funtell see if he got any more
- 1:30:46recruits. He's getting fucking two wide
- 1:30:49receivers a week so call him and see how he doing tonight.
- 1:30:54I. I I ain't doing that.
- 1:30:55That man's in camp, that man. Probably still in the office
- 1:30:57right now, working right? You watch your practice.
- 1:31:01Tape for tomorrow. You're damn right.
