- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: I much love series by me and Noel who's joining me, it's on Dexter, which originally came out on, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in July, in
- 1:54[SPEAKER_01]: Someone who's afflicted with a condition and has a compulsion.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_01]: Basically an anti-hero, we know some sense of the word, the works in the pathology had in Florida.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think in Miami, I think all.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's as a name that is Dex, Dex and Morgan.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: So now while you've kind of like this, you've been actually binging this and what made you, what did you hear about the Excel that actually made you actually want to catch up on this?
- 2:32[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I really like police shows and Dexter I basically just heard was a serial killer show and a police show yet it was really well done with great characters.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what originally got me into it.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_02]: I think I just needed a new TV show and I said oh Dexter, you know, so I started watching it and then I got to the last season and then put off watching that season for about a year until I knew we were going to do this discussion.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_02]: But the fact that it's just a character who are you rooting for, but it's also very just a very well done story.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: Because there's a lot of anti-hero stories, there's a lot of police shows, but to combine them and have both those elements of the show be quite good, I think, is a unique experience.
- 3:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of a very bit of a dark beginnings.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: I go and discuss about what the premise is or who Dix is because the, you know, title in the show and that's basically very counter-based story on him, on Dix so he's origins, but it is, I mean, you just start as a current trip because those who probably aware of it or not so aware of this show, it's, it follows the beginnings of
- 3:39[SPEAKER_01]: of Dexter Morgan, who's suffers from trauma, which I'll let you explain.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: But it's kind of raised by a piece officer, I'm Harry, who takes him when he's winged.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_01]: So just fill us in about the background of what Dexter is and what made him what he is or where we reach him as the series begins.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_02]: So Dexter Morgan, his mother, his birth mother was an employees of informant and paid the price with her life.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_02]: because of the way she was, you know, put down by drug dealers, Dexter has theorized that he has become a serial killer.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_02]: And he was adopted when he was an infant by Harry Morgan, who is a police officer in Harry Morgan as Dexter's rep realized that Dexter had traits that showed that he could possibly become a serial killer.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_02]: And when those traits became so strong, Harry basically taught him
- 4:40[SPEAKER_02]: how to ethically put people down so to speak.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_02]: So Harry is a police officer.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_02]: He got extra to work with the Miami Metro Police to
- 4:50[SPEAKER_02]: look up cases and things those cases you hear about on TV perhaps where a rich person has gotten away with murder or a teacher has gotten away with hurting someone.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's usually murder that these people get away with but they are bad people drug dealers, murders, pedophiles who get away with horrific crimes and there is usually proof that they did it but are able to get away and Dexter takes those people down and puts them away and
- 5:18[SPEAKER_02]: that is generally where we start with the show where Dexter is finding people to kill.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_02]: But these are people who definitely deserve it.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_02]: These are people who don't who will probably never go to jail for their crimes, but he will take care of them.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, while maintaining a personal life because Harry told him the most important thing to do is to look normal.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_02]: So he has a girlfriend.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_02]: He has hobbies and things like that.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_02]: Very interesting.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: He kind of
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: parts dexter with a code that you must actually to justify it because the one that separates him is that he will not go after normal.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: Here's a compulsion and whatever it is, it's going to manifest.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_01]: So Harry manages a very the best of a bad situation by actually, well, follow this code if you
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: Have to kill someone then who will have to be, let's make sure it's a bad person or a good person in our code and that I either you will have to have proof.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: Go find your proof, have undeniable evidence that is him or her.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: and then you can act upon it, but only then.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: So he becomes just kind of for one of a better word, kind of this nighttime vigilante, as long as he follows the cult or else he becomes exactly who he's hunting.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of kind of like internal one-alog with, I'll be speaking to Assa's orders.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: We give you a very good first person perspective of what's going on in his mind and it's, that's what makes this very interesting that we start
- 6:50[SPEAKER_01]: really going deep into, it's not just a procedural story, it is a internal monologue as he's trying to fit in deal with a being a normal person or trying to
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: have the persona of an all person.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: So people don't pick up on him.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: They'll have to bring donuts to his work colleagues.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_01]: He knows this is a social norm for bonding.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what he does.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: Not that he understands it, but it's fitting him and camouflage.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: So it's very fascinating as we
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: kind of actually get to liking because it's a very, it's not as a, let me ego there.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: He's just trying to deal with his dark passenger as it were.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and as a story goes on, you actually will root for him.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how many spoilers we're going to get into.
- 7:45[SPEAKER_01]: All of them.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_02]: All of them, wonderful.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: Well, there's a plot line where there is a child predator who is talking to his girlfriend's children, and then his end up talking to the children, and he's like, don't do it again, or things we're going to get ugly, and that he ends up doing it again in the extra ends up killing him, but it's like,
- 8:03[SPEAKER_02]: I get guarantee most parents if they knew a child predator was hunting their children would want to do the same thing.
- 8:10[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so you kind of root for him in that way.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's like he is doing, even though it's technically the wrong thing, it's something a lot of people wish they could do, but he doesn't mind.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: The other thing that I think makes texture so interesting with the trying to fit in thing is if you didn't know he was a serial killer, you'd probably just think he is autistic or socially, you know.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_02]: So surely an after something like that, but I think it's very sweet because he's never trying to hurt people's feelings or be rude to them.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't understand.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, this is hurtful or this is mean or people don't like this reaction.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_02]: He's just trying to be nice and normal to people even though he's technically sociopath and wouldn't care about people's feelings.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_02]: He's still nice to people, which I think makes all the difference, especially his most characters who are sociopathic or very smart or autistic that come across as very rude and brass for no reason.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_02]: He's the opposite.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_02]: He tries, you know, his hardest to be kind and loving to people.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that makes him, I think, a very good person, even though he has these, you know, dark feelings and inner demons.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_01]: He's always, yeah.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: can understand that sometimes he hurts people's feelings by not reacting as they expect into which because he kind of forms a kind of a relationship with a girlfriend or you know, she has a son and he's kind of he's a very passive character because he lets them do the talking, he listens,
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: He tries to give us an approximate response as he knows he should.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: And again, he's giving a monologue to us as in maybe I should be doing this.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: And he stops to stop.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he does.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: Feel things.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: He's not a total sociopath because he... He knows me a lot.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_02]: He's been told he's a sociopath.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, because I don't think he totally is.
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of a mixed psychology.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's even realistic really, but it's kind of like he does care for them.
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: And he feels, you know, a warmth and a protection for them.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: So it's something that's probably psychologically hidden because as we get into his past, we see that he...
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: did actually probably witness his mum's murder by the drug cartel who they did in a huge horrific manner, very, that kind of witnesses as a small child.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: Along with,
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: which later finds I put in the first season that he has a brother who witnesses as well.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: And you see how those initial traumatic effects has probably generated who they are now.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: So now his brother comes super.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: It does mix in the parents because he knows of him and it's known as the Ice Truck Killer.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now, all these kind of like almost ape, a lot of the killers in America during the historical figures who kind of like, oh, that's the ML of such and such and such that you would have seen in real life cases.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's quite fascinating if you like crime and psychology, actually, because it's always learning new things.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, one of the things I was going to say as well is people sometimes say that oh, dexers unrealistic because the police never catch on to him.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_02]: But then you learn like no offense to the police, but sometimes police solving rates are like twenty five percent.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: So I think it's completely normal, you know, and, you know, they're they're focusing on so many cases and things.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_02]: So I think for people to say how did you not get caught?
- 11:52[SPEAKER_02]: Not really, you know,
- 11:54[SPEAKER_02]: something that is unrealistic because they have so many things to juggle.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_02]: They're not thinking about backster like we are.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_01]: So the big there's always kind of a nice kind of attention because he's always seems to be oh's on the verge of trying to cover up why's hang around.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: Dinch-tective work or around climbing cases or some people are kind of like get hints that something's all right with him.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: One of his characters obviously is Dokes who's
- 12:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's the character you most love to hate because he is the opposite of Dex as in he's loud, aggressive in your face and but he's just instinctively does not like Dexter and it's terrifying that he's just going to find out at any minute because he has his suspicions, even from series one and two is like he's
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: but it also makes it realistic because he just he's stuck there.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's like this very socially awkward person.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, hmm, you know, but I feel like I've met people like that in real life for suspicious people who are just socially awkward.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, I don't think it's that unrealistic, you know, that he's on him.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_02]: So to speak, but you know, I like how everyone around him is basically like, Dokes, what are you doing?
- 13:09[SPEAKER_02]: Like grow up that, you know, textures a nice guy who's just a little awkward.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_02]: Don't be rude.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's something instinctively that he just want to let go.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think they also have these characters who come because he's such the, the more passive character and he's even at our point of view really to this show.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: He has a kind of surrounded by very emotionally, highly strong characters and being one of them is is
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: in his life is obviously Debbie, his sister.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: She's ambitious, but she's kind of like a bit of a mess sometimes, so you can see him very protective of how she could even just throw away her career with her strongly, emotionally led decisions a lot of the time.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of, as a much protective riser,
- 13:58[SPEAKER_01]: Step brother to the system, let's see.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I do love their relationship though.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's so easy to have like an adoptive sibling relationship and just have them hate each other.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_02]: But Deborah is, I think, very nice.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: I think she's a good character.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_02]: I like their relationship until it gets Alabama-E, so to speak.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_02]: But I think they're good siblings.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they've been together as siblings for nearly their entire childhoods.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and they're different personalities, but she still loves him and treats him well.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_02]: And because they don't have parents or any family really anymore, I think they get to stick together.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's sweet that they're, you know, working together and everything like that.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: She's a good character, although she has the worst dating decisions.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't think a single boyfriend of hers was good.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_02]: The men who were older than her father, the other guy that she dated, his name starts with an A. His name is Anton.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_02]: Did not like him either.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: They need to give this woman better love interests, preferably those who are not her father's age.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she makes a lot of the whole series.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, who's going to be her disaster boyfriend of Veso?
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: When the first one, she kicks off, it's basically the ice track player's swimsuit.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: He's trying to date.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_01]: She's actually, you know, actual serial killer on Mass.
- 15:21[SPEAKER_01]: And he's just doing that just to get to Dex and it's like the huge trauma for her dating life.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: but you're right, you know, he she calls him that's out on this is how you actually like an ass.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: So you should really look after you go a good relationship with the girlfriend here trying.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: So as kind of a guidance kind of like, hey, push up and be normal.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, be normal or respond a bit because you don't.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to show if she kind of she just thinks of him as a dog, but she doesn't know it.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: Just the depth for her.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: He's kind of missing
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: of social norms, because he's even hiding it from her to an extent, but she must know he's not quite the, you know.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_02]: Well, the other thing I like about Deb is that, you know, what makes her relationship more unique is the fact that Harry spent a lot of time, their father spent a lot of time with Dexter and not a lot of time with her.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's be so easy for her to like dislike him for that, but she usually doesn't bring it up, which I think is quite nice.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_02]: So, so, and I like when
- 16:29[SPEAKER_02]: One of them answers the phone and they say hello Who is this and they're like we're looking for Morgan the hotter Morgan I think that's funny.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as if that's not really handsome.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_01]: So it's I did not have a so much come flashback story because you got how are you even though he's passed on a
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: this time of life he's kind of like a lot of his moral lessons you learn as you see Harry giving it to Dexter as in like why you should do this so what's wrong or how do you try it's very good it shows his development how it's from you know a teenage Dexter to you know kind of growing to who he is now and it's you know it has a lot of rickness to
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: to that because he could he almost because you go into Dex's mind he's almost hallucinates that Dex did because the code is the only thing that's keeping him on the straight and narrow if he deviates that he will start to fall apart and so yeah it's almost like an eternal monologue with him and
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: And Harry and his lessons and Harry's code is why keeps reciting it.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: And you can see he's on a tight road always.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of tension.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_01]: What keeps?
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: Because this went on for about at least seven seasons or even more actually, maybe.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, most shows kind of like sometimes when modern day and these were twenty four episodes per season, these weren't these weren't those network television or to a extent, okay, so it's a lot of hours, but then maintaining that
- 18:04[SPEAKER_01]: interests and for all those years is we take it for granted then but now it's like you see seasons that drop off after two season two or six episodes or whatever and what keeps it so tight is that you go all these tensions going on you've got him being discovered you're trying to unravel him as in understanding him because it's a deeply because you sympathize with him when you think well how you get to this stage and then
- 18:34[SPEAKER_01]: he's even a fall apart and then he's even so it's all these things.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: You unraveling and deeper and every single episode, you wore these things that could happen by the end.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be hunted or he's hunting, you know, he's prey.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think the interesting thing is, of course, this depends on the season, but you all kind of know what's going to happen, but not how it happens.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's what makes it more interesting.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: because the how is what makes it unique that makes sense like if you go to season three the Miguel Prada season Miguel Prada his brother was wrongfully murdered and he basically wants to become a serial killer like that start and you know what's not going to end well but it's how it's not gonna end well that makes it unique because that yeah he comes
- 19:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think every season is almost like who's the arching circular that is hunting over that season.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_01]: You've got, and it's a very great character actor.
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: You've got the Trinity killer, and you've got John Lyft girl, and you've got, like you mentioned with Jimmy Smith, it's good actors, good great television actors that are very seasoned, and then doing this very dark and very
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: a very fascinating character portrait that you've got going on.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: And it, you always feel scared for Texas and he's going up against this monster now.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's really, really fascinating.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_01]: But what for you with our highlights or going to be kind of like, because you kind of watch it kind of relatively quickly.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I did as well, because I did a lot of binging back in the day, but also when it was more released.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_01]: But what for you really sticks out in your mind about
- 20:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to say there's a very underrated season that people should talk about more, which is season five, where Dexter is found finds the scroll lumen and she wants to kill the group of these men who are all rich and powerful.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_02]: but they tortured her basically and she wants to find them and kill them.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_02]: And a lot of people say that extra after season four got bad, but I think season five is also quite good.
- 20:51[SPEAKER_02]: I also like joining me Lee Miller's character in it.
- 20:54[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I think the Miguel Prada seasons a little overrated, but I quite
- 20:59[SPEAKER_02]: I think that season five this whole vigilante thing, it's taking it to a new level.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: The only thing I didn't like with this season is that scene with Deb, Dexter and Lumen, the girl who's hunting these guys, almost get caught and Deb just goes away.
- 21:15[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it was like, okay, you know, you're fine, you know, which is so weird that she never accepts him for who he is later on.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_02]: But I also really like the
- 21:26[SPEAKER_02]: Second season with dogs that keeps you on edge because you know he's slowly finding out the truth.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's very unique and yeah, I also like Brian Moser is a villain.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's underrated though some people in the fandom think he's so good because as an extra brother they're going back and forth emailing each other.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_02]: trying to out with each other, and poor devs caught in the middle of it.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: And then I just like the relationships with that Dexter has with everyone.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: We're very trying to be normal, but he's a good friend and family member, and boyfriend to all these different people.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, he's still struggling with all these different things.
- 22:00[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's, yeah, with that.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of always find it fascinating when he's having, you know, using the relationship with, obviously, you know, Julie Benz is very, you know,
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: normal person.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: I think I've become like a very normal normal and that's it's kind of best for him.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of he keeps him so anchored and then of course as things progress, he moves on to other relationships or that in an hour relationship and then things are unfortunately panel where she's becomes a victim as it were but it's um I did like there was another relationship where there was a
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: I get up on who, I think she was a bit of an arsonist and what they find, they find Dexter.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, like Lila?
- 22:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because she finds him kind of like fascinating and pretty human.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, as a kind of obsessive kind of
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: relationship with him and he he's kind of like he kind of like yes I we are similar to a way but that internal men and luck he's almost disgusted by them because they are killing because they don't have a code they seem to be killing me no more
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: And that being he can't quite resolve that because he finds it won't.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sorry, but you're a bad person because you're killing just helpless victims.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_01]: You shouldn't.
- 23:30[SPEAKER_01]: That's what keeps me.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_01]: So much this strange moral compass that will line that E's got and they haven't and he cannot
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: really coexist, even with his brother, because even the season one.
- 23:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, like theme throughout Dexter, even into the play stuff is as it ever okay to ethically kill Hannah McCay, you know, has killed people who wronged her, but you know, it's similar to Dexter, where it's bad people who will never pay for their crimes, same with Lumin.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's like an interesting theme throughout the entire show is what makes it okay to kill.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, Lila, I hated her so much, probably because I've met people like that and they are annoying and I want you to stay far away from them as possible.
- 24:14[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of like that dexter was found to be hot property by these ladies.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's great fun for towns.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, yeah, because you always, you kind of like, you feel like, hey, I want dexter, I want him
- 24:24[SPEAKER_01]: you know to be you know a winner you know it's kind of like it kind of actually does because it went on for quite a while kind of like it took on a lot of themes of as you say the vigilanteism and there's the bitway
- 24:38[SPEAKER_01]: he of course he has a son or he's the doctor's son from his first girlfriend and of course he passes away but then you can see what is a role model and then he has this episode where he says oh I'm kind of like the darker vendor so you've got this whole like oh yeah yeah that's your bro kind of persona
- 24:56[SPEAKER_01]: And he kind of like chose to become that a bit.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, yeah, I'm looking like, I'm in a, I'm like a superhero.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: So it just takes all the themes that we have been coming on over the last ten years or whatever, or you know, in film and TV and it takes it, comments on it and passes it free.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: So it's, you know, as soon as endless charm kind of thing.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_02]: Well, he never thinks of himself as doing a good thing, even though a lot of the fan base would say that he, you know, does do good things.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_02]: I think that adds to his charm as he never thinks of himself as a hero or anything like that.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_02]: But I favorite scenes with his vigilantees, I'm in general, or whenever they, someone threaten someone close to him.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: And especially like Julie Banzis character and her kids, because like if someone were to threaten one of the cops, their cops, they can defend themselves.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_01]: but this you know stay at home mom and you know her ex husband who is abusive when he protected her from him like that makes me happy you know to see someone stand up for people who can't stand up for themselves well it's kind of like you living for carelessly for you know victims are just normal people then you see these threats on bullies and very kind of aggressive you know entities that
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: and everyone's lies, but then he doesn't have that line, where he says, hmm, okay, well, he's, well, after he's gonna go straight to zero to a hundred and probably you're gonna end up on my table.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of like, you know, justice is coming and it's, and it's like the, you know, like the pet dog where it's an animal, but so you've got that, you're excited.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's very comforting and it's kind of wish for a firmman on it, because he's norms that you can't cross, but he has their compunction
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: about doing that so yeah it's kind of almost a wish for film and kind of thing and he has kind of because he works for the police he has a way to like get away with it so to speak so you know it kind of you kind of feel that there's some other themes going on with it's like
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: isolation but also addiction because I think because he just tried like I does he need to because over the course of this series it goes on for you know maybe five years, seven years but it's kind of do I need just how can I stop well I want to stop and he actually the periods where he just says I
- 27:26[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I shouldn't be doing this anymore because, you know, there's too many circumstances I can get caught and spoiling my life and I want to know more life and he tries to stop, but he has this common potion which manifests itself where he really can't stop.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_01]: It's his nature.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_02]: But also I don't think that's necessarily wrong.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's why I hate when all these characters act like they like he is a bad person because he's still not, you know, doing anything totally atrocious, which I know sounds weird.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_02]: But he's just, you know, he's not and
- 28:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think the thing with addiction, like, because in season two, they play this addiction storyline where he redefines out.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_02]: He has an addiction, doesn't know what it is.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: It makes him go to AA or, you know, a different anonymous group like that.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_02]: But I honestly think, depending on someone's issue, I don't think they have to give something up completely.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_02]: They can just do it less or justify it some other way.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_02]: So, you know, but I think it depends on what it is.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, that's sort of like, I wish someone would have told Dexter, apart from maybe Hannah McKay, that he isn't doing anything horribly wrong, even though he could get caught.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_02]: So.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's, it's very, it's kind of like almost, you always get, you know, this compulsion to kill, it's in our DNA.
- 28:51[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, I'm whether you want to admit it or not, but it kind of, we go through these, what's the philosophy
- 28:59[SPEAKER_01]: oh well he's a victim of this or it's an addiction or they put a label on or you want to say oh
- 29:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's a superhero.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: Let's give it a name.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: Let's give it a call.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's so many different things as we go through the years.
- 29:14[SPEAKER_01]: But it's still a constant thing.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's not, you know, you try and define it or pigeonhole it in one way or another.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's how we tend to like love labeling stuff or stuff and psychology and so forth.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: But it's a constant that, you know, everything doesn't really work.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't really work because he hears
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: The person he is at the start, he's basically the person he is at the end.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: There is some growth as in he, he's high functioning because he cares for people and so forth, but so it makes him more digestible.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: But he doesn't really change from who he is at the start to be at, which is
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is good.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_01]: You don't see a growth.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: It's not because it wouldn't be realistic.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: It's something he's inherited to him and his nature.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: I think so.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_02]: So how did you make the music?
- 30:06[SPEAKER_02]: It's not just something he wants to do.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a compulsion.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_02]: And when Deb had tries to take that away from him in season.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_02]: It's at six or seven.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't go well.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_01]: He needs that structure.
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, just to keep on that line of years.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: But it's the people around him start changing because they start discovering and let Quirties, his boss who kind of like starts unraveling and finding stuff on the group.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: And so he gets boxed in.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: So we just part of this running tension that goes all the way because you got now from episode episode.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm seeing the season.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: Is this the one where he's going to now be caught?
- 30:44[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly because you don't know you really don't know anything.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_01]: I keep it like and you always holding your breath from scenes to scene or like everyone's got reflective looks his direction and then oh my god does it's it's quite tense
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: It's an episode.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: We each episode in season there's just full of internal tension on that, which makes it addictive viewing, honestly.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_02]: If you were watching this when it was coming out, you wouldn't see that you had three more seasons or something.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_02]: First is when, you know, I was watching it.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_02]: I knew there were seven seasons total.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_01]: So you kind of know he kind of makes it, but it's
- 31:19[SPEAKER_01]: But you kind of think, well, because you can almost watch an episodic, because you don't, sometimes you can just pick up a episode or have this overarching big bad, let's say, or big killer, and then you'll have this older smaller
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: cases into episodic, you know, and then we'll have a theme almost, it's like something about he's learning about himself or he's pretty, it sounds a bit hoaxy, but it's, it's almost just done so well.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_01]: Um, um, I had to do fine, then, I mean, as it, you know, towards the end when things start starting falling apart, which it's, it's his relationship with his sister, because I think he's basically, she starts finding out, and because, you know, it's the beginning of the end at that point.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think with Deb, like, I'm kind of disappointed that she thought it was so awful, especially when her mother, their her father and the father's mentor for this whole thing didn't think it was that awful.
- 32:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think I don't want to say she had an overreaction, but at the same time, it's like, he's not just killing random people.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: He's killing people that you as a police officer know.
- 32:27[SPEAKER_02]: You know, isn't going to do anything.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think the required situation would be impossible, though, because it's like, Dexter, like, you know, what do you even do in that situation?
- 32:36[SPEAKER_02]: But I think it's, you know, the start of the end is,
- 32:41[SPEAKER_02]: Debt, you know, Debbie spiraling and not knowing what to do.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_02]: So she turns the drugs and everything gets a new job and, you know, I feel like at that point, he doesn't know if she won't out him at any point, which makes it really hard.
- 32:57[SPEAKER_02]: And then when Hannah McKay comes back in, or if she ever left to really, she doesn't like her as well, which adds more stakes.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_02]: So, but I think Deb was not very understanding and I don't think it's really in her character to be as less understanding as she was.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's kind of like it's um Yeah, she's because she's dealing with the knowledge and then she'll never come back from it because she's she's she's very well She's probably angry that she didn't know for all these years because since someone she's I don't know where for live basically and then
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: And then she, I think she starts acting out, this, you know, and once she tries to come to it, oh, no, well, look, let me understand your code because she kind of, because her, she then she do it as feelings for deck.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, and it's kind of like, it comes a bit odd.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: But then I kind of think it's say manifestation of her spiraling out of controls, like, you know, you know, you know, it's, she's a lot of feelings where every person she's falling or had a relationship with, somehow has just gone awry and she can't trust.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: people at all, and it's a bit odd.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_02]: So we can't just trust her love interests.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: She can't trust her father because of this whole-dexter situation.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: And now she can't trust extra.
- 34:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's gonna conquer Iceland and just subspire.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: And how did you find then as it approached the six and seven seasons?
- 34:24[SPEAKER_01]: Because I say it's quite miracle that this a series like this of twenty four episodes each one then
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: lost so long and then how do you end it?
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: How do you end it?
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: The ending was a bit divisive because it's
- 34:40[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 34:41[SPEAKER_02]: Well, like, I like that, like, I don't think Deb should have died, especially because they've killed off basically every female character in this show.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_02]: I kept basically other male ones, but I think if she had to die, like, not making it just an immediate death, it'd be like, oh, medical incident, you know, taking away that hope.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_02]: I like, okay, audit it was though.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_02]: Her boss came back to bite, you know, everyone in the butt.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_02]: I, because he's very interesting.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_02]: He seemed her boss in the last season.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_02]: Seems like such a cool nice guy giving her a job and, you know, asking no questions, but he turns out he just wants to sleep with her.
- 35:15[SPEAKER_02]: He's a horrible, you know person and is almost the key to the end doing.
- 35:19[SPEAKER_02]: I also wish we saw Aster and Cody again, you know, his ex-wife children for it, you know.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_02]: before the show ended, but I mean, I think it should have ended with, um, I don't know, just not the way that it did.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_02]: So, but he's kind of, it was come.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_01]: It comes so proper.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's because it's the, on that boat on his famous boat where he used in the bay and then he kept, he's trapped in a school.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: The client, well, okay.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I kind of think, yeah, Debbie should have, I think, he,
- 35:52[SPEAKER_01]: should have probably then just left Debbie couldn't be left there.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: So like obviously you'll never accept who I am.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I can't really exist here now that you know.
- 36:02[SPEAKER_01]: So if you'd have just to have to move on, which he kind of like, he almost did actually.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think there was in the mid season where he's kind of mid show runway.
- 36:15[SPEAKER_01]: He went to Argentina for a while and he's caught up because he was just getting
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: too much flack from everything because he was almost being discovered and how a new life but then came back.
- 36:27[SPEAKER_01]: But hey, you should have just left him and Debbie should have been just left.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's such a good character.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_01]: She's the opposite of Dexter.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_01]: But she's just kind of, I'm just a firecracker, but the emotional up and down, I'm he we just don't know where you stand with her and it's
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: Great performance for it as a good double act on most.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so that show kind of kind of ended.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: But you, you didn't, you found the ending considering it's a bit of a dilemma and I bit disappointing because I found the time it did feel like that.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I definitely think one of the lesious things that screen, you know, showowners can do is kill off a character.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's very lesion.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_02]: That's not what happens in real life.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_02]: I just adds it other, you know, lap away from realism.
- 37:17[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, if she had to die, that would be a way to do it.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_02]: I'm also watching the show SWAT now.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_02]: and Kenny Johnson was in the last couple episodes of season seven, and he's the main character of the show SWAT now, which is pretty funny.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_02]: But I think the serial killer, I think it's interesting because it's like the serial killer for the last season.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_02]: We, you know, was trying to be helped, but still wanted to be evil, basically.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_02]: So, but I think it, you know, he should have gone with Hannah McKay to Argentina, you know, and I like how she arts, arts, um, Deb's boss in the end.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think that was hilarious.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_01]: There's always a very good way back and forth as in that, because in telling, you know, the serial police in the shower, because of us alone, the quiet methodic.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_01]: intelligent so there's always a chess game mentally between Dexter and the killer of that season or so forth which is another level as in say because it's all sometimes they come face to face but within their social norms and so they can't feel show their hand or he can detect all these are the tells of a killer so it's fascinating that
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, does he know that I know and so forth?
- 38:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_02]: You want to use like stress and communicate normally with most people, but can bigger things about out about other serial killers.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's so unique.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's class fascinating.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: I was where it's real and not, but it's very great, great show.
- 38:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like, perhaps a Michael C. Hallford just didn't mean because he's such a softly spoken actor, but then if it was any more harsh, any performance that would, you could probably would have warmed him so quickly or over this whole season despite there's terrible things that he does do.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's a great
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: great performance and for the whole show.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: So when that ended obviously it's like there is a post credit scene where we just end with him but oh he's found somewhere else to live and he's just in a very isolated looks like logging kind of like jobs somewhere or you know I don't know who where but looks like maybe Canada or wherever and then he's just him looking at the camera and thinking
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess, which is, I felt it was fine, because as the characters don't dig, it's easily been, oh, he dies at the end.
- 39:42[SPEAKER_01]: He just feels so operatic, but he hasn't changed, and he just has to move, and that's it.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_01]: But he internally,
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: is the same.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_01]: So after this, I, now you didn't see what I kind of like then saw a new blood which picks up from years afterwards and that is a good show because it kind of shows how he has to have a new identity, moves to another community, integrates how people like him and he hasn't really kind of like had the need to
- 40:20[SPEAKER_01]: to kill.
- 40:20[SPEAKER_01]: He has other things to try and channel it, like hunting and all that.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: But again, it's all fitting in, you know, very much a, you know, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a, a,
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: easy to answer.
- 40:47[SPEAKER_01]: There's something like a short run, but it kind of gave you a nice closure.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_01]: I would say closure almost with with Dexter as in, you know, does he meet his demise and maybe towards the end it's kind of like very touching go that maybe this is this is where he goes because I think his son comes to find him out eventually.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_01]: And so this legacy kind of thinks as always in the show, easy, am I good enough parent?
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: And easy going to
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: you know, pick up my bad parenting and I don't like me for some reason to kind of like, he'll think, how I am's going to turn into me, I don't want him to.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_01]: So, so that's how it explores that.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it's the horror of his son and so to realize who he is and what Dexter does.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: And you think, okay, well, that's the end of
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the next day, you know, you think there's a mortal wound, but I don't think this is so, because after that we have, well, original sin?
- 41:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen an episode and you have quite the early.
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of like, you know, beginning of a kind of like voiceover, the whole of your life, freshness before your eyes, if you're towards the end.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so this is kind of what serious at the,
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: the young deck stuff, which not that we needed it, but it's it for what it is.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's nicely done.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's how I've seen one or two episodes of it.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's okay.
- 42:19[SPEAKER_01]: And you think, well, you know, well, yeah, I'm sure it's a nice way to end texter, you know what I mean?
- 42:24[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's bringing the characters back, I think, which is quite good.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_01]: All the ones are in the younger form or the ones who a lot of them are.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely him, Debbie.
- 42:35[SPEAKER_01]: as some of the police force, Harry is there play by?
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's actually like with Harry.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_02]: We only saw Harry from his from Dexter's point of view and he's a protagonist.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_02]: You don't know if he's a reliable protagonist, which I think makes it interesting as well.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, yes.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think there is much help with this character and I think even the networks know it and the audience know it because it's always been a wall because I think there will be another series.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: maybe it's not the end of Dexter.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's a catacrophusion to die, but in it's been announced that there will be another series picking up maybe after he awakens, let's say, from a mortal wound, which is interesting.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a character I think if you haven't caught this series, it will you will binge it
- 43:30[SPEAKER_01]: You, is one of the most pinchipals says I'm a talking long episode, say I won't long one here.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: It was quite fascinating.
- 43:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's, I think, a really good show, especially the first five seasons.
- 43:42[SPEAKER_02]: I highly recommend it if you like either police shows or, you know, mysteries or thrillers, I think it's worth it.
- 43:48[SPEAKER_02]: So.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, yeah.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: Well, okay.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_01]: Well, um, thanks a lot.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think yeah, I think both got huge problems up and recommendations for this series.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, well, I say the, um, no well for joining me.
