- 1:55Well, now it's time for our very last episode of the lineup in this
- 1:59run. This is the second to last episode of the lineup ever aired,
- 2:04and there were four lost episodes between the program we played last week and this
- 2:12one. The good news is that this is not a rehearsal, because I
- 2:15hate to end on a rehearsal. This episode aired on February the thirteenth,
- 2:21nineteen fifty three, and the title is good enough to eat. Ladies and
- 2:27gentlemen, we take you an all by transcription behind the scenes of the police
- 2:30headquarters in a great American city for one of the cool glaring lights. Well
- 2:36that's before us Beginnocent the vigrant, the thief, the murderers. This is
- 3:15mister Yes, Yes, that's right. I'm a chill cuth Raine. Oh
- 3:20I'm glad to know you. I wasn't sure I was in the right plane.
- 3:23That's this is it? Now we can sit down over here. Oh
- 3:27sure, anyway you say, excuse me please? That brought me I feel
- 3:35kind of embarrassments, no need to, and I thought I knew my way
- 3:40around, and I fall for the little badger game happens every day, Yeah,
- 3:46I suppose so the first time it ever happened to me. I have
- 3:49your attention. Please you keep me off there on the other side of the
- 3:52wire in the audience room, May I have your attention, please, Concer
- 3:58Sergeant beat Cocker in the lineup to you. Each of the suspects you will
- 4:01see will be number. I'll call off the number, their name in charge.
- 4:04If you have any questions identifications, please remember the number of sign of
- 4:08the prisoner as I call his name at the end of each line. Will
- 4:11ask your questions identifications, call out the number if you're sure. You're not
- 4:15too sure the suspects have him held the questions. I asked these suspects of
- 4:18maybe to get an answer tone of voice so they'll not pay too much attention
- 4:23to the answers as they often lie. All right, bring on the line,
- 4:28okay, move on up to the end of the stage. Right over
- 4:30here. Step it up here there, I said, move over here.
- 4:34That's it. I'll turn all of it face the stream. That's right,
- 4:39look straight ahead, cause you answer your sides. When I ask your questions,
- 4:42talk us a long way to the back of the room out there,
- 4:44so sing out all right, number one, Murray knosto grunt as saw right
- 4:50up there, Murray, right up to the line. That's it. Where
- 4:55do you live? Murray? Will you answer the question? Murray? Where
- 4:58do you live? Fifty a story? How long you left that? Your
- 5:01times? Right? How long? Three years? Did you waste your time?
- 5:05You didn't waste any last night, Murray. That's what I'm telling you
- 5:09I've done, is all right? Twenty you jacking? What'd you do?
- 5:12Murray? Doctoring? Of course that's what Who would your side? My mother
- 5:15in law? Why did you hit him? Marry? Yeah, coming,
- 5:18that's why three years? Who live with that game all the time? And
- 5:20he asked the actor. He acts the drive a guy nuts all the time.
- 5:24You can shut her up a pretty good job of the Murray. She's
- 5:27in the hospital. We'll be here. It's not but the doctor says two
- 5:30broken red, broken nose, enjoying broken wait with the Dutch yacking. It's
- 5:34a doctor to kick her out, all right, Marry slide that game the
- 5:41pack that slide down, all right? Number two must three hump naked on
- 5:46robbery step right up there? West? That's where do you live? Lock
- 5:53up? West? One number on Sawyer? I don't know somehow flock?
- 5:58How long you left? That was coup with? Where'd you live before that?
- 6:01Where? I don't know where? Some others? What kind of work
- 6:04do you do? Hey? What you do work? What do you do?
- 6:09A special? Pick? Couple couple of bucks? How much did you
- 6:12pick up last night? Wet? I'm in, Rosenberg says different? Who's
- 6:17he? I was? Rosenberg's not a contestant on fourteenth Street? He was
- 6:21held up last night West? No skin off me? Wrestling officers picked you
- 6:26up? Half block away? Bush? Where'd you get the gun? What?
- 6:30You had a thirty two calip coat on your West? I didn't have
- 6:32no gun was in your pocket when you were arrested. Let's see you're saying
- 6:42say something about I mean man, you know, huh? What's up?
- 7:03Telling dog? Ever? Here? A close twitty and bunch of let them?
- 7:05Then? I don't think so? What is it? Microscopic priscillas that
- 7:11causes bachelism? A form of food poison sounds like the blue plate special at
- 7:15Charlie's Cafe. You never ate food poisoned by close titty and bunch of line.
- 7:21The more you wouldn't be here that deadly, then it's practically one fatal
- 7:27unless Santa thoxin is given in time. Even then more totally will run close
- 7:30to sixty. Pleasant stuff to run into. Fortunately, it's comparatively rare,
- 7:36only seven cases reported here in the past five years. What's our interest in
- 7:41it now? All of those cases popped up in the last twenty four hours.
- 7:45Man, three more suspected but not verified. It just been admitted to
- 7:48seating off any fatalities. Three already did more respect to die for a warning.
- 7:55How do you count for it that that's the trouble than I can't no
- 7:59connection between these people, No, well it must be, so look for
- 8:03yourself. Outside of Carl Walker and his young grandson has died of it,
- 8:09all the others of some different families, different parts of the city. What
- 8:13causes this food poisoning time? We're usually a poor job of home cannon food
- 8:20sealed up tight before it's been boiled long enough to fill. That's just a
- 8:24point, man. Maybe one family eats spoiled home can food, but not
- 8:28six different families in different parts of the city in twenty four hours. That
- 8:31makes sense unless somebody's deliberately spreading the poison stuff around town. That's why you're
- 8:37here. Yeah, any idea at all what these people might have been eating,
- 8:41who might be spreading it around? Nothing, that's the health You better
- 8:45work fast then it's odorless and tasteless. Just to bite a food of that
- 8:48stuff and it is enough the idea where you're going to start, man,
- 8:52No, but I better come up with one in a hurry. Job like
- 9:05this. That had enough is one day in a family, but too can't
- 9:11be helped. I care for that reason that he h Yes, mister Walker.
- 9:24Yes, that's right. We're police officers. Mister Walker. Could we
- 9:26talk to you from an a plan? Well? Is it something important?
- 9:31Officer? We're rather upset right now. Yes, we know, that's why
- 9:35we're here. Oh, Bob, Bobby and my father. Yes, sir,
- 9:41we won't take up much of your time. All right, thanks,
- 9:50but there's no need to go. My wife when I hope it will be
- 9:54necessary in this to walk. She's in the living room with some friends taking
- 10:00pretty hard. Yes, in here, please go, are you you said
- 10:09your police officer? Yes, I'm Lieutenant Guthrie. This is Sergeant Cogan.
- 10:11All right, well, Lieutenant, I'm afraid I don't understand what the police
- 10:16has to do with it. Well, we're trying to find out what happened
- 10:20to your son and father, mister Walker. Well, it's simple enough,
- 10:24isn't it. They eat something that food is poison. They did, and
- 10:26it's not as simple as amos. Well what difference does it make? How
- 10:30simple it is? My boy is dead and your pillion year isn't going to
- 10:33bring you back to light. It might stop some other man's son from dying.
- 10:39I'm sorry, how can I help you? Does your wife have any
- 10:41home canned foods in the house? And the doctor asks that no, my
- 10:46wife works, she's always to be. Can't any friends give her some neighbors?
- 10:50No, no, we checked that. We just don't have any.
- 10:54What about your dinner the night before serving? And canned foods at all?
- 10:56My wife prepared the list for the doctor on the dead see if yourself there's
- 11:07nothing chicken, mashed potatoes and gray bressels sprouts, mushrooms and mack cake cor
- 11:13What about this mushroom? No, we all ate everything. No one else
- 11:16got sickle and my father, Bobby, whatether they eat the poison them.
- 11:22It wasn't in this house. Any idea of what it might have been,
- 11:26where they might have eaten something. But well, as far as we know,
- 11:28my father was not out of the house that day. When Bobby came
- 11:33home playing ball, it's hungry as a bear that he had had any eat
- 11:37since lunch. I see, it's a great man for playing ball. Bobby
- 11:43was as this is his first basement. He wanted to be a ball player.
- 11:54I've played a little semophoon in my time. He wanted to take after
- 11:58me. You didn't made it two weeks getting pretty good. It was better
- 12:03than me. You can't get it beat age. Yeah, all, I
- 12:16guess that's all I tell you. It's all we know. It is out
- 12:18of a blue sky. I just hope didn't stop happening to any other families.
- 12:24Who're gonna try, mister Walker, Well, we've sure been doing fine.
- 12:43Yeah, driving all over town, talking to people who don't feel like
- 12:46talking to anybody. We come up with nothing. I've had one break.
- 12:56You still think somebody's passing out poison food around town? Has to be How
- 13:00can you figure it out? Of these people knew each other all a different
- 13:03foods. There's no connection say someplace, We've got to find it. Any
- 13:07idea, how will in urgent stand by thirteen K coll in urgent thirteen K
- 13:22guthrie go ahead? So thirteen K succeeded, wants to receiving hospital emergency ward,
- 13:28proceeded, wants to receiving hospital emergency ward one and two thirteen K guthrie
- 13:33receiving hospital will go that's getting rough. Then five more cases in the last
- 13:50two hours prognosis unfavorable and three of them any more information there? That's why
- 13:56I had to call for that three of them here. We drew the usual
- 14:01rank with four of them then, But I wanted you to talk to this
- 14:05man names Ronson. He keeps on saying something about it. Where you've been
- 14:09hearing for yourself? Thank you? You got to help h in the last
- 14:22stages. Progressive paralysis affecting the respiratory tract. That's what he's been saying.
- 14:41Ronson. Listen to me. Where'd you have that free lunch? M?
- 14:50Where'd you have the free lunch Rnso some bar? Did you have it at
- 14:54some bar? Bar? Where there's this bar Ronson bar? Where is it?
- 15:05Where's the bar Ronson man on Madison? That where it is Madison Street?
- 15:18Is that bar on Madison Street? Bonson? Is that bar on Madison
- 15:26Street? Bronson? That's it? Cut three? Yeah, what do you
- 15:39think could be part of our answer? Sure? Quick drink and a bite
- 15:43of the downtown bar that have explained men from different families and different parts of
- 15:48town being it. Yeah the way I hope Ronson was wrong? That any
- 15:54idea how many people can drop into a bar in twenty four hours and we
- 15:58don't even know where? It is? The life savings of an eccentric recluse
- 16:17stolen. It's a startling theft that leads to sudden death. The Hidden Fortune
- 16:21murder case. Confronting mister Keen Tracer of Lost Persons this Friday Night. Don't
- 16:26miss this program from the very beginning to get all the clues and see how
- 16:30you'd make out in mister Keane's place. Remember this Friday night and every Friday
- 16:33night mystery fans have an appointment with mister Keen Tracer of Lost Persons, presented
- 16:40on most of these same stations by CBS Radio. That got me, Yeah,
- 17:14Bill, how are we doing? I might have a lead? What
- 17:17is it? Remember the name of Ronson died about an hour ago at receiving
- 17:19hospital. I got the report. He managed to talk a little. I
- 17:22thought he got sick from a free lunch at some bar. It might have
- 17:25been on Madison Street. Told you the address? What he ate? I
- 17:27didn't have a chance. That's pretty big man, best we've got so far.
- 17:33What are you doing on? Four squads are checking all the bars on
- 17:36Madison Cargo, Rash and Burn are interrogating it. Receiving hospital report. Yet
- 17:41it'll be real rough, damilated food passed out at the bar, and I'm
- 17:45tell you how many people who hid. I got the papers and radio stations
- 17:48working on it. I'll put out the story and formed the public. You
- 17:52want to start chilly white panic with his thing. Man, Nine people are
- 17:56already dead, and I have to take a chance. Bill, Okay,
- 18:02how'd you do? Pete? I think we might have something then? But
- 18:06well, two of the people at the hospital managed to talk to some One
- 18:10of them have been making the rounds of Madison Street bars the night before,
- 18:12had something to eating. A couple of them couldn't remember which ones of uh
- 18:15huh. The other one was too far gone to say much, but they
- 18:18both remembered similar things they'd eaten. Any similarity. Yeah, marinated mushroom mushrooms?
- 18:26Sure fine, I get me frimily Walker on the Fall and you'll find
- 18:30his number on that list of family said by the food poisoning. I think
- 18:34it ties in only point of similarity. We've had Walkers don't fit in.
- 18:40Then I had mushrooms for dinner. The boy and his grandfather dying. Neither
- 18:42one of them could have been at a bar. The rest of the family
- 18:45eat them too. There's Italian someplace has gotta be. Yeah, point a
- 18:49family workers on the farm band. We got some reports on Madison Street bars.
- 18:53Bring in what you've got coined? Right? This is Lieutenant Gouty,
- 18:59mister Walker. Yes, those mushrooms you had for dinner the other night.
- 19:03You sure they ont can? Yes, I'm positive, Attendant. I tol
- 19:06her to that. Why how would they serve mister Walker plane marinated home?
- 19:11Well, we had them both plain and marinated, Aeutenant Missus Walker, and
- 19:15I like them plaining let his sauted little My father had the marinated ones.
- 19:19Why do you risk what about your son? Bobby? Bobby had them playing?
- 19:26Sure, I'm positive he doesn't. He didn't like them any other way.
- 19:30I remember my father coaxed him to try the marinated once and he didn't
- 19:33like them at all. Then he did taste them. Yes, yes,
- 19:38I can still remember the face he made. You'd think those mushrooms were poison.
- 19:42I'm sure of it. Remember where you got them all. I don't
- 19:48do any of the shopping my wife would would you mind asking mister Walker?
- 19:52Well, she isn't home right now. She went for a ride with some
- 19:56friends to kind of get her mind off the thing. We'll have a call
- 19:59in them inte she gets home, mister Walker, and check your refrigerator in
- 20:03shallows right now for any leftover mushrooms. I send the man out to pick
- 20:06them up. Tenner. I still can't believe there's anything wrong with those mushrooms.
- 20:11Just don't try tasting any now. I want to goodbye those reports.
- 20:18Yeah, boys talking about thirty five bars so far, I'm only four will
- 20:22served any kind of free food? Well, let's see the reports, and
- 20:23now here's when you want to see that happy Holigan fourteen twenty seven North Madison
- 20:30Street on a couch reports dispensing the following free foods the evening of Monday,
- 20:34February and nine. The Good Beats with Cheese rye bread home made. I
- 20:40needed mushrooms. That's the only one that's it. Okay, let's go.
- 20:57Yeah, that's why I had an awesome mushrooms last Monday night. The home

- 21:04mushrooms? I got him from a guy? What guy? Come, there's
- 21:07some drunk. He walked me a Monday morning care on a real load,
- 21:10made me a deal. What kind of ideal? Well, he had a
- 21:12half dozen jars these here mushrooms. They try to sell them to me.
- 21:15I give my brush off, so he offers me a deal, give me
- 21:18this stuff for a bottle of muskeet. Tell what you did? Well,
- 21:22I got to lose, so I put the stuff out on the bar.
- 21:23Who is this guy who made the deal? Come, there's some drunk,
- 21:26like I said, and I never saw them. Now, what does he
- 21:29look like? You're not a drunk daddy needs a shaved I see hundreds of
- 21:33them. Who knows what he looks like? And any idea where he got
- 21:37those mushrooms were homemade, That's all I know. How do you know that's
- 21:40just one? A judge? It was a label on him. No,
- 21:42right, we'll just definitely a paper piste on the right. And what to
- 21:45say? What's something about somebody's homemade mushrooms? I didn't pay no attention.
- 21:51How many jars of the stuff did you use? Well, they won that
- 21:56kind of stuff don't go here to the strictly at salami and cheese. Joiny,
- 22:00See what's the beef about these here mushrooms? Anyway? Got the rest
- 22:03of the jocks around. Yeah, you know what I said? The stuff
- 22:08don't puss good here. So I've done the five judges. I loved the
- 22:12trash can this morning. Trash can still Cann't worry brou judge is right on
- 22:18top of you can look them over easy. Trash cans are empty, calm
- 22:29collected. So it was out here a half hour ago. You can't remember
- 22:33the name on those jarants? What I said? I didn't put out ten
- 22:37shies. What's the difference anyways, I ain't gonna get any more the stuff
- 22:51all right? Right, I didn't know about all the haircraft. Had you
- 23:03do? Colin hops are good tucks? Checked in about the slow for sure,
- 23:07that's what the superintendent says. Any idea where it was them? Yeah,
- 23:11that's big here. The refuse over there. Every truck that's coming to
- 23:14there jumped down there that routine path over they clashes down at one big heath
- 23:19and they run it all over that. Say, obay, they got the
- 23:22salvage that one. Okay, tell them to get the belt going. You
- 23:26kidding? Then only one way to find out who's putting up those mushrooms.
- 23:30Get the name and address off those gars. But for that file five is
- 23:33twenty feet high, maybe forty fifty feet around. Have any better ideas,
- 23:38I'll tell them to start the belts. Times four fifteen working reality, very
- 24:04a lot of trash was bigger than it was before. And the real way
- 24:07to lived down it was almost that the rigg lights that we have to there.

- 26:57west side somewhere. I think you should build these tenements a long way.

- 27:21they've got to live on the top floor. Someday we're to figure out
- 27:25why. Right here are you, Missus Stefano? Are we police officers?

- 29:11looks all right? Are sure it's all right? And what's that you said
- 29:15about the food nobody. You have to tell Ma Morose about the food she
- 29:19cooked, a fine cooked, just to put that. I'm sure you do.
- 29:23Man. You said, your brother Andrea selves for your missus te Fane
- 29:26Mamarosa, she cook Andrea, he said, has he sold anything for your
- 29:30so far? I don't know. So let's come back yet, there's a
- 29:34three days now he will not come back. What did he take with him
- 29:37to sell, Missus Stefano? Right, match your room with the marinards,
- 29:45Mamarrosa, all made much rooms with the marinads. How many of these jars
- 29:49did he take, Missus Stefano? Sixty jar? Sure? It was only
- 29:55six? Sure? Who is the sixty jar? That's what you call it?
- 29:59Firm? How much more of this have you got around, miss sister
- 30:02to put up for twenty thirty jobs, all of it in that cabin.
- 30:06Yes, it's all in there. When Andrea get back, he's going to
- 30:10tell that too. Make a big a business for Moros after fifteen years,
- 30:15So pick a business on my own. It's pretty good. Huh, it's
- 30:18fine, sister. Here, you take this job for yourself. You're going
- 30:23to see what Mamrosa means. Look at the color, you know, with
- 30:27a wind Ollie boy looks like just a fine yeah, looks good enough tea.
- 30:34Yeah, welcome back. He is definitely ended with a tough spot for
- 31:03Guthrie and Carter because the one thing I kept I'm wondering and we never got
- 31:07the answer, is how do you tell this sweet old lady who's worked hard
- 31:12and wants to start a business that not only is her business ruined, but
- 31:18that her cooking practices have led to the deaths of non people. That's an
- 31:22incredibly difficult duty to deal with. And I think that, you know,
- 31:30it was just a tragic thing the way it turned out, and we definitely
- 31:36felt the weight of the dilemma even though it really wasn't resolved in this episode
- 31:41in terms of how this would be addressed. Also, we have actually heard
- 31:48an earlier episode. Earlier this season, there was an episode of Doctor Tim
- 31:53centering in on food poisoning, and there was an and this isn't the only
- 32:00one. This does seem to be an issue of warning about the dangers of
- 32:06poorly cooked food and how it worked, poorly canned food and how it can
- 32:09be a killer, you know, And I guess that sometimes even to things
- 32:14that we perceive negative the lead. There can be a positive because you know,
- 32:20I've heard people say that, you know, nobody cans anymore, but
- 32:27this does bring home a reason why there were some that some people would be
- 32:30reluctant to can because there were people who you know, and certainly there were
- 32:36lots of people who knew how to do it well. And we don't mean
- 32:40to say that, but there for everything, there can be a bit of
- 32:46a downside. I don't know if the police would normally take the lead in
- 32:52an investigation like this, but the you know, it's is, you know,
- 32:59whether they're the health department or something else. I do know that this
- 33:02is probably more realistic than the approach of doctor Tim, where a kindly doctor
- 33:09and his two precocious kid friends investigated. We now on to some listener comments
- 33:15and feedback. Brian says that I continue to enjoy all your podcasts. Keep
- 33:22them coming. Thanks so much, Brian, and Douglas says thanks for your
- 33:29great and continuing work. My wife and I both especially love the Johnny Dollar
- 33:34shows and your associated commentary. Justine says, thank you so much for putting
- 33:42out all your podcasts. I really enjoy the chance to listen to such a
- 33:45wide variety of detective shows. I also have been a thoroughly enjoying the War
- 33:50podcast. I listen while I'm working in my leather shop. These shows can
- 33:53make a long day of stamping much more interesting. Thanks so much, Justine,
- 34:00and if you'd like to listen to the War, be sure to go
- 34:04to otrdetectives dot com slash the War and we've got a great podcast of World
- 34:09War II programs. And I appreciate both Brian and Justine referencing it. And
- 34:17Michelle says, I have your app on my Kindle, iPhone, iPod,
- 34:22and iPad, so no matter what device I pick up, I can always
- 34:25get in my fix for great detectives. I found your podcast by accident one
- 34:30day while working on a Sherlock Holmes project for college. I work full time
- 34:36for an insurance company as a claims adjuster, and I don't have the ability
- 34:38to sit and read, but can listen to books on tape normally, though
- 34:43I hate that sort of thing, as people drone on and on reading.
- 34:46But I was behind on my project and was hoping for inspiration. I got
- 34:50it and an a on my paper and kept hearing you mentioned Johnny Dollar and
- 34:54figured I would give it a try. I was hooked from the first episode
- 34:58I listened to. Now I can't live without Sherlock, Johnny, let George
- 35:00do it, the line up, Nick Carter or Mister or Mister Into or
- 35:07any of the other shows. Thank you for your dedication and hard work.
- 35:10I would be lost without great detectives. Well, thanks so much, Michelle.
- 35:15And also there's a comment from Chris who says love the show. I
- 35:21know a lot of old time radio related books have been discussed on the show
- 35:23over the year, so my apologies if this has already been reviewed. But
- 35:28have you read The Badge True and terrifying crime stories that could not be presented
- 35:32on TV from the creator and star of Dragon It. I saw it on
- 35:37Amazon the other day. Thanks well. Thanks for the question, Chris,
- 35:40and I'm not too much into kind of shocking true crime stories, but since
- 35:47Jack Web wrote it, I should probably read it, and it's definitely would
- 35:52be something I would pick up. I've just got to remember to do it
- 35:57and hope it's not too extra, but I definitely do intend to take a
- 36:01look at it. One other thing I did mean to mention before we left,
- 36:07something that really struck me as funny when we were listening to the lineup,
- 36:14it was where they were, where they were advertising mister Keene, And
- 36:17one of the big suggestions that they made was to tune in at the beginning
- 36:24so you can hear all the clues. And that kind of left me scratching
- 36:29my head because don't people do that? But at fault I don't know.
- 36:32Are there some listeners then or now who just tune into shows in the middle
- 36:38because they want to try and figure out not only what's happened with the solution
- 36:45to the case, but everything that came before it. That was just it's
- 36:49really tickled my funny bone when they said that, because it's like, what
- 36:53or do you just tune into the end to hear the solution? That's actually
- 36:59is the best part. But I hope our listeners do continue to listen to
- 37:06beginning, middle and in. That's generally the best way, but other people's
- 37:10experience may vary. All right, Well, that will do it for today.
- 37:16Coming up tomorrow our very last day of listener support campaign specials, we
- 37:23will take you to one more show we're going to play eventually in the future,
- 37:28but not anytime soon. Just give you a little bit of a flavor
- 37:30of it. The lineup is over, but join us back here next Saturday
- 37:36for Police Blotter for two weeks, and then Homicide Okaine and for one week,
- 37:43and then after that we'll be into police Headquarters for eighteen weeks the lineup.
- 37:49I'll give a closing thought on the lineup. I thought that it was
- 37:53a fairly well done show. Certainly it had its flaw flaws, and sometimes
- 38:00it could get a little too dry, but I enjoyed bringing it to you.
- 38:05I particularly enjoyed the wally Mare area. I wish that there were more
- 38:07episodes of that, and who knows, there may be some that do come
- 38:12forward in coming months and years, and we can certainly revisit the series.
- 38:16This has been the fourth longest period for any series, sixty two weeks,
- 38:22so three weeks longer than we had Barry Craig on the show. So I
- 38:24hope you've enjoyed it. And of course we are just about five months away
- 38:31from bringing back Dragnets, so a lot to look forward to, and I
- 38:36hope you'll be there with us for it all. In the meantime, if
- 38:38you have a comment, senate to me Box thirteen at Great Detectives Dot net,
- 38:43follow us on Twitter Radio Detectives, and become one of our friends on
