- 0:12Hello friends. It's Sean here and it is a
- 0:15Friday. And normally on a Friday I would
- 0:18be very cheery and chirpy and I would congratulate you on being
- 0:21so clever to reach the end. But today, today is a different
- 0:25sort of a Friday, isn't it? Today is Good Friday, and as I
- 0:29speak to you, these words are jumping off the page at me.
- 0:33Crucify him. Crucify him.
- 0:36And that is what we come to today on this Good Friday, as we
- 0:40remember these incredible events that Jesus endures on our behalf
- 0:47so that he can reunite us with God.
- 0:51And that is the lens through which we will read all these
- 0:54words today, knowing that it is because of his love for us that
- 0:58he goes through this. So buckle yourselves up friends,
- 1:02as we endure, as we read together, as we share the story
- 1:07captured in John chapter 19. Then Pilate had Jesus flogged
- 1:21with a lead tipped whip. The soldiers wove a crown of
- 1:26thorns and put it on his head and they put a purple robe on
- 1:30him. Hail King of the Jews, they
- 1:34mocked as they slapped him across the face.
- 1:38Pilate went outside again and said to the people, I am going
- 1:43to bring him out to you now, but understand clearly that I find
- 1:48him not guilty. Then Jesus came out wearing the
- 1:53crown of thorns and the purple robe, and Pilate said, look,
- 1:57here is the man. When they saw him, the leading
- 2:02priests and temple guards began shouting, Crucify him, crucify
- 2:07him, take him yourselves and crucify him.
- 2:12Pilate said. I find him not guilty.
- 2:17The Jewish leaders replied, By our law he ought to die because
- 2:22he called himself the Son of God.
- 2:24When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.
- 2:29He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked
- 2:32him, Where are you from? But Jesus gave no answer.
- 2:38Why don't you talk to me? Pilot demanded.
- 2:42Don't you realise that I have the power to release you or
- 2:45crucify you? Then Jesus said, You would have
- 2:50no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above.
- 2:56So the one who handed me over to you has the greatest sin.
- 3:01Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leader
- 3:05shouted, If you release this man, you are no friend of
- 3:08Caesar. Anyone who declares himself a
- 3:11king is a rebel against Caesar. When they said this, Pilate
- 3:16brought Jesus out to them again. Then Pilate sat down on the
- 3:21judgement seat on the platform that is called the Stone
- 3:24Pavement in Hebrew Gabbatha. It was now about noon on the day
- 3:30of preparation for the Passover, and Pilate said to the people.
- 3:34Look, here is your king. Away with him, they yelled.
- 3:41Away with him. Crucify him What?
- 3:44Crucify your king? Pilate asked.
- 3:48We have no king but Caesar. The leading priest shouted back.
- 3:53Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified.
- 3:59So they took Jesus away, carrying the cross by himself.
- 4:03He went to the place called Place of the Skull in Hebrew
- 4:09Golgotha. There they nailed him to the
- 4:12cross. Two others were crucified with
- 4:16him, one on either side, with Jesus between them, and Pilate
- 4:21posted a sign on the cross that read Jesus of Nazareth, the King
- 4:26of the Jews. The place where Jesus was
- 4:29crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Hebrew,
- 4:34Latin, and Greek so that many people could read it.
- 4:38Then the leading priest objected and said to Pilate, Change it
- 4:43from the king of the Jews to he said, I am the king of the Jews.
- 4:48Pilate replied, No, what I have written, I have written.
- 4:56When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they divided his clothes
- 5:00among the four of them. They also took his robe, but it
- 5:03was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
- 5:07So they said, rather than tearing it apart, let's throw
- 5:11dice for it. This fulfilled the Scripture
- 5:14that says they divided my garments among themselves and
- 5:18threw dice for my clothing. So that is what they did.
- 5:23Standing near the cross were Jesus mother and his mother's
- 5:27sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene.
- 5:32When Jesus saw his mother standing there beside the
- 5:35disciple he loved, he said to her, Dear woman, here is your
- 5:41son. And he said to this disciple,
- 5:44here is your mother. And from then on this disciple
- 5:48took her into his home. Jesus knew that his mission was
- 5:54now finished, and to fulfil the scripture he said, I'm thirsty.
- 6:00A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge
- 6:04in it and put it on a hyssop branch and held it up to his
- 6:09lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he
- 6:12said, it is finished. Then he bowed his head and gave
- 6:19up his Spirit. It was the day of preparation,
- 6:24and the Jewish leaders didn't want the bodies hanging there
- 6:27the next day, which was the Sabbath and a very special
- 6:30Sabbath because it was Passover week.
- 6:33So they asked Pilate to hasten their deaths by ordering that
- 6:36their legs be broken. Then their bodies could be taken
- 6:39down. So the soldiers came and broke
- 6:42the legs of the two men crucified with Jesus.
- 6:45But when they came to Jesus, I saw that he was already dead, so
- 6:49they didn't break his legs. One of the soldiers, however,
- 6:53pierced his side with a spear and immediately blood and water
- 6:57flowed out. This report is from an
- 7:01eyewitness giving an accurate account.
- 7:04He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe
- 7:10these things happened in fulfilment of the scriptures
- 7:13that say not one of his bones will be broken and they will
- 7:18look on the one they pierced. Afterward, Joseph of Arimathea,
- 7:25who had been a secret disciple of Jesus because he feared the
- 7:28Jewish leaders, asked Pilate for permission to take down Jesus
- 7:33body. When Pilate gave permission,
- 7:36Joseph came and took the body away.
- 7:39With him came Nicodemus, the man who had come to Jesus at night.
- 7:44He bought about 75 lbs of perfumed ointment made from myrh
- 7:48and aloes following Jewish burial customs.
- 7:52They wrapped Jesus body with the spices in long sheets of linen
- 7:56cloth. The place of crucifixion was
- 8:00near a garden where there was a new tomb, never used before.
- 8:04And so, because it was the day of preparation for the Jewish
- 8:07Passover, and since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus
- 8:12there. Jesus, we have no words that
- 8:28even come close to our bewilderment and wonder at what
- 8:33you were willing to persevere through and submit yourself to
- 8:39in love for us as we remember your awful death.
- 8:46We are just so grateful for your love that kept you there on that
- 8:52cross to do what you did and have love for us to restore us
- 8:59to you and the Father. So today, as we reflect on what
- 9:06you've done for us, Jesus, remain close to us, change our
- 9:11hearts, and continue your work of restoration in us, your
- 9:17grateful people. We pray this in your incredible
- 9:21name, Jesus, I'm in.
