- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah. So, um, like disclaimer, I don't drive full time anymore. Um,
- 0:06Speaker 1: a year ago I walked away from the safety of
- 0:09Speaker 1: a full-time job to work for myself. Um, I burnt out,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I got really sick. My nervous system couldn't cope anymore.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I was just like back to back ill with one
- 0:21Speaker 1: thing after another, like influenza, walking pneumonia, another cold, another cold,
- 0:27Speaker 1: another cold. Um, And I just couldn't catch a break.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And so I had to make that decision of like,
- 0:34Speaker 1: I need something needs to give here. And what I've
- 0:36Speaker 1: built with truck and with CJ felt was really important.
- 0:39Speaker 1: And there's a lot of potential there. And I thought
- 0:42Speaker 1: I just had to give that my full energy. So
- 0:44Speaker 1: there have been periods of time where a truck has
- 0:47Speaker 1: become like my home for that period. So say a harvest,
- 0:51Speaker 1: a grain harvest that was like home, you set your
- 0:54Speaker 1: bed up in it. My partner, he's a full-time interstate
- 0:57Speaker 1: truck driver, so he goes from Sunday to Friday living
- 1:01Speaker 1: in the truck. So that is home for him. We've
- 1:04Speaker 1: got a beautiful home here that he gets to enjoy
- 1:06Speaker 1: one to two nights a week. But trucking doesn't have
- 1:12Speaker 1: to be interstate. You don't have to sleep in a
- 1:14Speaker 1: truck or live in a truck. You could do local
- 1:16Speaker 1: deliveries where you're home every single night and it's just
- 1:19Speaker 1: a job that you go to. or you could be
- 1:20Speaker 1: an owner operator where you do live in a truck
- 1:23Speaker 1: and you just like that. I do know of people
- 1:25Speaker 1: who have moved to Australia and they do solely live out.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Of a truck.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And then occasionally they'll go and get a motel room
- 1:31Speaker 1: to reset for the time for our break. But for us,
- 1:34Speaker 1: we have got a home, a four bedroom home. And
- 1:38Speaker 1: then Aaron lives in the truck during the week. And
- 1:40Speaker 1: then for me, I'm about to go trucking for a
- 1:43Speaker 1: two to three week stint. And that will, I'll be
- 1:46Speaker 1: living out of a truck then.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So part-time for you, How many months is that out
- 1:51Speaker 2: of the year kind of thing?
- 1:54Speaker 1: I'm still working full time. I just don't necessarily truck
- 1:57Speaker 1: every single day of the week. So I've got a
- 1:59Speaker 1: truck that's got my name on it that's got Taylor
- 2:02Speaker 1: Motorsport has put on it. I haul Porsche race cars
- 2:06Speaker 1: around Australia for races for him. And then when I'm
- 2:08Speaker 1: not doing races with that truck, I can use that
- 2:11Speaker 1: truck to go to schools, to do career days, to
- 2:13Speaker 1: do truck shows and use that as like my backdrop
- 2:16Speaker 1: for my educational stuff that I'm trying to do.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So I'm interested because you mentioned getting sick on the road,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and I've always wondered about that because you do sit
- 2:26Speaker 2: a lot when you're a trucker. And I'm also guessing
- 2:31Speaker 2: you're limited on food options. I mean, you can do
- 2:33Speaker 2: your best to try to eat well, but you're limited
- 2:37Speaker 2: there because you've got a time limit. And I think
- 2:39Speaker 2: you guys have logs and stuff, right? You're logging your time,
- 2:43Speaker 2: how long things are taking. So especially for a woman,
- 2:48Speaker 2: I want to ask you this because– For me, and
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't even drive a truck, but I'm always, I've
- 2:56Speaker 2: always been, I don't know if it's a, it could
- 2:59Speaker 2: be a cultural thing, you know, how our world has
- 3:03Speaker 2: really emphasized with women how they should look and that
- 3:06Speaker 2: always changes, but it always goes back to skinny, very
- 3:12Speaker 2: pretty makeup all the time, which is hard if you're
- 3:15Speaker 2: a woman who doesn't like makeup, who likes to eat.
- 3:18Speaker 2: not overeat, but just enjoy food. But there's just this
- 3:21Speaker 2: culture that we've, women just have, there's a lot of
- 3:23Speaker 2: pressure for a woman to be something. And that's very elusive, honestly.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And so, and like you said, like you were a
- 3:32Speaker 2: tomboy growing up, but that was something like people say tomboy,
- 3:36Speaker 2: but at the same time, I'm just thinking this is
- 3:38Speaker 2: a girl who just really enjoys outdoor things where it's like,
- 3:41Speaker 2: this is really neat. But of course it does come
- 3:45Speaker 2: out of a stereotype, right? So then it's like, oh,
- 3:46Speaker 2: she's odd because she's not doing the normal stuff. So
- 3:52Speaker 2: I wanted to ask like for you as a woman driving,
- 3:56Speaker 2: did you face insecurities about that? Was that an issue
- 4:00Speaker 2: for you where you were like, okay, I may not
- 4:03Speaker 2: be able to eat as well as I want. I
- 4:05Speaker 2: will be sitting for long periods of time. Was that
- 4:08Speaker 2: ever anything you would worry about or was... No, because
- 4:11Speaker 2: I exercised.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So up until a couple of years ago, I trained
- 4:15Speaker 1: at the gym a lot. So I'd go to work.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I would have my gym bag. I'd hop in, like
- 4:21Speaker 1: finish and go straight to the gym and go into
- 4:23Speaker 1: whatever next class it was. I've always ate pretty healthy.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I've been very blessed that my weight hasn't been something
- 4:29Speaker 1: that's been, I don't have a super fluctuating weight. I'm
- 4:34Speaker 1: in my mid-30s now. Yeah, I'm 36 now. And definitely
- 4:40Speaker 1: when I got sick, I definitely started to notice my
- 4:42Speaker 1: body's changing and I'm not really okay with that. But
- 4:48Speaker 1: I know that Jasmine and I, my sister, when we
- 4:51Speaker 1: started trucking, I loved that I didn't have to wear makeup.
- 4:54Speaker 1: I've never been really a makeup person.
- 4:56Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I like feeling pretty and I like presenting well. But
- 5:02Speaker 1: I don't like this. Like if I want to wear makeup,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I want to wear it because I want to. I
- 5:06Speaker 1: don't want to have to go to a job where
- 5:07Speaker 1: it's like a part of the uniform to like keep
- 5:12Speaker 1: up with appearances.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Like why?
- 5:13Speaker 1: Like who am I trying to impress? And if girls
- 5:17Speaker 1: want to go to work and they want to wear
- 5:19Speaker 1: makeup and they want to wear clothes that make them
- 5:21Speaker 1: feel good, like we should all just be able to
- 5:23Speaker 1: show up however we want to, right? So becoming a
- 5:28Speaker 1: truck driver, like I know that my sister and I,
- 5:31Speaker 1: we both in the early days wore like pink boots
- 5:36Speaker 1: um and I love like any kind of like ode
- 5:38Speaker 1: to being a female like I really lent into it
- 5:40Speaker 1: because I was like we definitely didn't want to lose
- 5:44Speaker 1: and become really butchy or like really like we didn't
- 5:48Speaker 1: want to let ourselves go so on the weekends like
- 5:51Speaker 1: you know by the end of the week when you
- 5:53Speaker 1: get to wash your hair like we'd do face masks
- 5:55Speaker 1: and we'd like go get our nails done because we
- 5:57Speaker 1: wanted to kind of like reconnect with our feminine side
- 5:59Speaker 1: um But that was the early days when I was
- 6:02Speaker 1: doing concrete and you're, like, constantly dirty and this and that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So you, like, try and, like, grab onto anything that
- 6:07Speaker 1: makes you feel, you know. But these days, like, I've
- 6:09Speaker 1: been in it for a decade. I don't really have
- 6:11Speaker 1: those thoughts anymore. I still, like– I still show up girly. Like,
- 6:16Speaker 1: my hats, you know, they have pink on them. Like,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I make merch that's, like, you know, girly but still, like,
- 6:24Speaker 1: not too much. But, yeah, like, I definitely– if you're
- 6:30Speaker 1: conscious of it, you can keep a healthy lifestyle while
- 6:32Speaker 1: truck driving.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah. No, and that's encouraging to know. I think that's
- 6:37Speaker 2: something maybe that's just a stereotype that's been passed down.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I mean, I just, I don't know where I heard it,
- 6:42Speaker 2: but it's people.
- 6:43Speaker 1: No, but that's a stereotype for sure.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, truck drivers just. Yeah, you see that. Yeah. And
- 6:49Speaker 2: they let themselves go.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Like we are working huge hours. Like, you know, they
- 6:53Speaker 1: can be working from 12 to 16 hour days.
