Latest / For All Nerds Show / Is Star Trek A Smarter Series Than Star Wars??!?!?! (Featuring Jason Clark)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On this episode of For All Nerds, I talked to
- 0:02Speaker 1: one of our listeners who tries to convince me that
- 0:05Speaker 1: Star Trek is better than Star Wars.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I don't think so. Hey, what up?
- 0:20Speaker 1: And that's This is Tatiana King, the Grand That's is
- 0:22Speaker 1: of Tech, also known as Madeline Pryor's Dark Chocolate Phoenix,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Lord of Light Sabers, Tatiana Kang, the Conqueror, and the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Coldest Winter Soldier ever. And today I'm joined with a
- 0:32Speaker 1: special guest, mister Jason j Clark. Jason is on the
- 0:37Speaker 1: show for one major reason because he did what we've
- 0:40Speaker 1: been asking y'all to do. Email us, tell us how
- 0:43Speaker 1: you feel about what you want to hear on the show,
- 0:46Speaker 1: about what you would like us to talk about, or
- 0:48Speaker 1: any feedback that you have. And Jason has some major feedback,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and we'll get to that to just a second, but
- 0:54Speaker 1: I just want to give you a chance to introduce yourself.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Jason. Please let the fan fam know who you are.
- 1:00Speaker 3: As you mentioned, the name is Jason of the House
- 1:01Speaker 3: of Clark, Cater of Trump of the uss Endo Prize
- 1:05Speaker 3: one nine oh six. Shout out to the good bruhs. Yeah,
- 1:09Speaker 3: I've been fullwing y'all for a minute, and Trek is
- 1:12Speaker 3: on the way. And I know Ben DJ Bennamans a
- 1:14Speaker 3: big Star Star Wars fan. Hear him talk about it
- 1:16Speaker 3: all the time. But I was like, wait, what about
- 1:18Speaker 3: the other side. So that's why I had to reach out,
- 1:20Speaker 3: like can we can we show some love to what
- 1:22Speaker 3: you know is probably one of the best shows of
- 1:24Speaker 3: all time. That's just me in my opinion. Yeah, so yeah, again,
- 1:28Speaker 3: thank y'all for responding and allowing us to have this
- 1:31Speaker 3: conversation and making space looking forward.
- 1:33Speaker 1: To Yeah, of course, and you are a fellow Howard
- 1:37Speaker 1: lum classic ten so ah, you know, so you know
- 1:42Speaker 1: we have to get the HBC you love in there.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And also just again just talking about fandom for the
- 1:49Speaker 1: perspective of people of color, I think that's the biggest part.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Well as so you haven't mentioned this yet, and I
- 1:53Speaker 3: mentioned it to Ben. I was also working with Combat
- 1:56Speaker 3: when he died. So I used to work at I
- 1:59Speaker 3: used to work at Serious ExM, and so I was
- 2:02Speaker 3: working with Combat because during a transition, if anybody is
- 2:05Speaker 3: a fan and we went from Backspin to Rock the Bells, Combat,
- 2:08Speaker 3: Jack was bringing his podcast and doing a radio version
- 2:11Speaker 3: and so as a producer on those channels. I was
- 2:13Speaker 3: working with Combat and great you know, no, no, don't
- 2:17Speaker 3: you go into it too. D A great dude. Love
- 2:19Speaker 3: working with them and figuring that thing out until unfortunately
- 2:22Speaker 3: that time happened. But yeah, so there was a lot
- 2:24Speaker 3: of connections. I was like, you know, there's too many
- 2:26Speaker 3: connections I had to reach out. So yeah, all them things.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Oh that's well, that's amazing.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Obviously, rest in power Reggio say, you speak his name,
- 2:33Speaker 1: you you speak as praise, so thank you. But wow,
- 2:38Speaker 1: quite a history you have, so it makes sense that
- 2:41Speaker 1: you are you know, you support the fan fam.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Okay, as mentioned you you noted to us.
- 2:47Speaker 1: She was like, you know, it's all lots of Star
- 2:49Speaker 1: Wars coverage but no Star Trek coverage.
- 2:51Speaker 2: It seems I know that.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Like throughout the years that we've been doing a show,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I have always been the Star Trek person, the person
- 2:58Speaker 1: who said they like Star Trek that you haven't read. Okay,
- 3:01Speaker 1: but to be fair, you haven't really heard the peep
- 3:04Speaker 1: out of me for many years from Starry Trek, and
- 3:06Speaker 1: there's a reason for that.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I don't care anymore.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I'll explaining you why the last, the last and it
- 3:15Speaker 1: hasn't been for.
- 3:16Speaker 2: A long time of me not caring, right.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So the last series that I was really invested in
- 3:21Speaker 1: was Discovery, and Discovery was done like twenty twenty four,
- 3:25Speaker 1: so it wasn't that long ago, but that was the
- 3:28Speaker 1: last time like I really was like into it and like,
- 3:31Speaker 1: you know, trying to interview the cast and this that,
- 3:33Speaker 1: like I actually spoke to sneak with Martin Green a
- 3:36Speaker 1: few years back at not Comic Con, but New York
- 3:39Speaker 1: Comic Con, and that was when like they were just
- 3:42Speaker 1: preparing for the show. So we're talking about like twenty
- 3:44Speaker 1: nineteen or something like that.
- 3:47Speaker 3: That's actually probably sixteen sixteen sixteen.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Ye, it's been a while, right, so and that's also
- 3:55Speaker 1: when I got to I did some amazing interviews that
- 3:59Speaker 1: year for that. But the point is like it's been
- 4:02Speaker 1: a while, right, And that's the last time that I
- 4:04Speaker 1: felt compelled enough to really be into it.
- 4:06Speaker 2: That's not to say that the shows haven't been good.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I did watch.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Clips here and their pieces here, and actually some episodes
- 4:13Speaker 1: like The Card and things like that.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But it just hasn't moved me like it used to.
- 4:18Speaker 1: When I was younger, and I have been as I mentioned,
- 4:22Speaker 1: the Residents Star Trek, like I've always pould Trek over Wars.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But then in the last I don't know, maybe five
- 4:30Speaker 2: years or so whenever, like Rogue one came out. When
- 4:33Speaker 2: was that?
- 4:34Speaker 1: Oh oh, even more twenty twenty seven, look at that
- 4:36Speaker 1: twenty sixteen.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's interesting, right, Star.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Trek Discovery and then Rogue one right around the same
- 4:43Speaker 1: time it started to.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Really set the set, you know, go off.
- 4:47Speaker 1: That was my entry into being like a bigger Star
- 4:51Speaker 1: Wars fan.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And okay, you know what I mean.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And through that time, like you, it grew and you
- 4:57Speaker 1: got things like the Masterpiece that is and Or and
- 5:00Speaker 1: that could helped me deeply.
- 5:02Speaker 2: For a variety of reasons. We can get into that later.
- 5:05Speaker 1: What I'm trying to understand from you is as how
- 5:08Speaker 1: do you bring you back to that side of things?
- 5:11Speaker 1: How what would you say to somebody in my position
- 5:14Speaker 1: where I'm just like.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Yo, I really would love it. I was always waving
- 5:17Speaker 2: a flag for it, but now I'm kind of like.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Eh, that's easy. That's easy. It's if you were into it.
- 5:23Speaker 3: You have to check out Prodigy and Lower Decks. The
- 5:30Speaker 3: animate yes, okay, animated, but they are two of the
- 5:35Speaker 3: best Star Trek things like everybody's gonna talk about the
- 5:39Speaker 3: nineties track and the older series and they hold their
- 5:42Speaker 3: own weight. They're some of my favorites too. But what
- 5:44Speaker 3: they did with Prodigy and Lower Decks is some of
- 5:48Speaker 3: the best trek and literally, especially speaking towards Prodigy, they
- 5:52Speaker 3: provided a blueprint of how to honor and show tribute
- 5:55Speaker 3: to what is in the in the past, but also
- 5:57Speaker 3: push it forward in a new way, which is But
- 6:00Speaker 3: I can understand what some of your frustrations like, especial
- 6:02Speaker 3: when talking about Discovery It.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I mean, the Stummach was cool, and I like that.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I mean I was drunk because there was a black
- 6:07Speaker 2: woman leading, right and then yeah, and then.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Of course Michelle Yo and everything that comes along with that, right,
- 6:13Speaker 1: Like so, so there was some cool concept there and
- 6:14Speaker 1: I really messed with it.
- 6:16Speaker 2: But after that I was just like, they're.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Not speaking to me, and I didn't you know, I knew,
- 6:20Speaker 1: I know, knew about Lower Decks, but I wasn't into
- 6:24Speaker 1: the idea of Trek from an animated perspective.
- 6:26Speaker 2: And I also I admittedly didn't give it a chance.
- 6:29Speaker 2: So what's so, like, what's happening, what's the tone of Prodigy.
- 6:32Speaker 2: What's this tone of lower Decks.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Lower Decks is, as I like to call it, is
- 6:37Speaker 3: Star Trek from a Star Trek fan, as if you
- 6:40Speaker 3: put a Star Trek fan inside the Star Trek universe
- 6:43Speaker 3: and allowed them to live, Like that's like it's literally
- 6:45Speaker 3: these lower deck ensigns, but they are also fans and
- 6:48Speaker 3: literally aware of the Trek universe and all these things.
- 6:52Speaker 3: So it's literally like if you were a fan of
- 6:54Speaker 3: whatever you loved and you were able to live and
- 6:56Speaker 3: be in this universe, That's that's what lower Decks is,
- 6:58Speaker 3: and so lower Decks is really you're going to enjoy
- 7:00Speaker 3: that if you know previous Trek because it's literally easter eggs, jokes,
- 7:04Speaker 3: references and adult situations, good hilarious watch Like that's not
- 7:08Speaker 3: necessarily Trek Trek, but you need to love Trek to
- 7:11Speaker 3: kind of enjoy it. Prodigy is the one for true
- 7:14Speaker 3: Trek because it's a great entry door for new fans.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Like one of the problems is a lot of people
- 7:19Speaker 3: didn't want to give it love because yes, it was
- 7:22Speaker 3: an animated show, it was being marketed for kids. The
- 7:24Speaker 3: first season aired on Nickelodeon, So a lot of these
- 7:27Speaker 3: a lot of people are like this, it's not targeted
- 7:28Speaker 3: for me. Yeah, but checking it out, it's It's did
- 7:32Speaker 3: some of the best work in essentially establishing what Star
- 7:35Speaker 3: Trek is. If you've never heard of it, never been
- 7:38Speaker 3: introduced to it, it literally kind of gives you everything
- 7:41Speaker 3: of the basic level because it's bringing in these outsiders
- 7:44Speaker 3: and so you're literally learning what this universe is along
- 7:47Speaker 3: with them. And then once you get the season two,
- 7:49Speaker 3: it tells a story that pushes the franchise forward, which
- 7:53Speaker 3: is one of the problems the franchise has had, especially
- 7:56Speaker 3: with Discovery, like it didn't know how to go forward.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Prodigy was like, okay, yeah, we got some great things.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We're gonna honor from the past. We're gonna include it.
- 8:04Speaker 3: If you understand some of these things, great, If you don't,
- 8:07Speaker 3: that's okay, it's no biggie, and then told a great
- 8:10Speaker 3: story connecting a lot of various different segments. So if
- 8:14Speaker 3: you want to get back into it, Prodigy is well
- 8:16Speaker 3: worth the time. Unfortunately, hard to tell to catch, like
- 8:19Speaker 3: right now, unless you go get a physical copy of
- 8:22Speaker 3: season one, you can't mind it available. You can't find
- 8:25Speaker 3: it because it was taken off Netflix already. Season two
- 8:27Speaker 3: will be taken off, I believe at the end of
- 8:28Speaker 3: this year. So it's one of those physical media things.
- 8:31Speaker 3: If you don't have it, you're not seeing it right now,
- 8:33Speaker 3: which is a shame because it's the best trek in
- 8:37Speaker 3: a long time.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Well that's paramounts fault and I really irritated about it.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And this is kind of something that I've been saying
- 8:43Speaker 1: just about like protect, preserve feed and physical media. Use
- 8:47Speaker 1: physical media because the way that shit works now, how
- 8:50Speaker 1: everything has been digitized.
- 8:52Speaker 2: It's also a form of control. Is also a formed
- 8:54Speaker 2: of really almost controlling.
- 9:01Speaker 1: The truth too, because if you have everything digital and
- 9:05Speaker 1: you could just erase things on moss and then say,
- 9:07Speaker 1: well it doesn't exist or that never happened, you don't
- 9:09Speaker 1: have any proof, right and no one has.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Nothing to tap back into.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It's always been something I've been pretty wary about, even
- 9:14Speaker 1: though I'm a tech person. At the same time, I've
- 9:16Speaker 1: always been like, there still has to be a path
- 9:18Speaker 1: to Foo ownership.
- 9:19Speaker 2: So which is why I'm like physicals is important.
- 9:23Speaker 1: Well, you know, and let me stick on the Prodigy
- 9:25Speaker 1: a little bit, but like, can you explain to me,
- 9:27Speaker 1: like what not necessarily what it necessarily is talking about
- 9:30Speaker 1: but like, is it fun?
- 9:32Speaker 2: Is it is it serious?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Is it?
- 9:34Speaker 1: Like?
- 9:35Speaker 2: Watch that care It's.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Because it's Trek, and Trek is all those It's going
- 9:40Speaker 3: to have fun, silly, ridiculous, crazy things. But then that's
- 9:44Speaker 3: also it's going to get at some heart. It's going
- 9:46Speaker 3: to get at some when I tell you Prodigy is
- 9:50Speaker 3: knocking it out. The fucking part that is the surprise
- 9:54Speaker 3: because because you're like what again, You're like, oh, this
- 9:56Speaker 3: is the kids show. It was made for Nickelodeon, it's
- 9:59Speaker 3: the cartoon, ain't no na. They are hitting you with
- 10:02Speaker 3: Trek tropes like they're hitting on the commentaries of you know,
- 10:07Speaker 3: youth agism, they're hitting on the commentary of outsiders versus insiders.
- 10:11Speaker 3: They're hitting on you know cause essentially, it's following the
- 10:14Speaker 3: story of four kids who don't know what the Federation
- 10:17Speaker 3: is never so you're learning about it through their perspective,
- 10:19Speaker 3: and then you kind of get caught up in this
- 10:22Speaker 3: story with some legacy characters and multiverse, like it's it's all.
- 10:27Speaker 3: It's multiverse, it's time travel, it's all. It's everything that
- 10:30Speaker 3: makes Trek trek, so it's not just one thing. And
- 10:33Speaker 3: that's the best thing about Trek is because it's not
- 10:34Speaker 3: just one thing. It's a bunch of different things, and
- 10:37Speaker 3: Prodigy carries it all. It's beautifully animated. You know, chip
- 10:42Speaker 3: porn is a big thing. With Star Trek. You got
- 10:43Speaker 3: to have beautiful ships to look at. They fly, It's
- 10:46Speaker 3: it's a you know, and even with the being animated,
- 10:48Speaker 3: it's got some beautiful ships, some great battles, some great scenarios.
- 10:52Speaker 3: It's it is no lie top tier Trek and so
- 10:56Speaker 3: one what you put it, like, how do I get
- 10:58Speaker 3: back into this? That is the show? If I was
- 11:01Speaker 3: like and like even if you've never heard the track,
- 11:04Speaker 3: because one of the questions is, okay, all these series,
- 11:06Speaker 3: how do you tell somebody who's maybe never gotten into
- 11:08Speaker 3: it where to start.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I'm not gonna start here.
- 11:11Speaker 3: You could start a Prodigy, okay.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And let me ask you a different question.
- 11:15Speaker 1: How does the stack up against Star Wars animal shows
- 11:18Speaker 1: like Clone Wars.
- 11:21Speaker 3: I think I've seen con Wars Wars. Corn Wars was good.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I would probably love Clone Wars more if I was
- 11:29Speaker 3: a real Star Wars fan. I enjoyed Clone Wars. Okay,
- 11:34Speaker 3: Star Trek Prodigy is just on to me as a
- 11:36Speaker 3: Star Trek fan On a whole another level. But if
- 11:39Speaker 3: you were looking at all things equal, it's probably on
- 11:42Speaker 3: the same level. You know, if you look, you know
- 11:44Speaker 3: it's taking some of the fandom out of it. They're
- 11:46Speaker 3: probably both on the same level, just high quality in
- 11:49Speaker 3: what they're doing. Like you want good storytelling, Yeah, it's
- 11:52Speaker 3: right there.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Well, you know, the other part about this is that, again,
- 11:58Speaker 1: why I've been giving Wars Star Wars so much more
- 12:01Speaker 1: energy is because that they're dealing and and there're some
- 12:05Speaker 1: not all of them, but a lot of them are
- 12:07Speaker 1: dealing directly with issues that matter to me, particularly as
- 12:10Speaker 1: a black woman, particularly as a black person in America.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Stuff like that, like again mentioning and or and or
- 12:17Speaker 1: it's just a beautiful, well written story.
- 12:20Speaker 2: It's it.
- 12:20Speaker 1: It has so much in terms of the cinematography, it
- 12:23Speaker 1: has so much in terms of the message, and so
- 12:26Speaker 1: much in terms of revolution. And not to say that
- 12:29Speaker 1: Trek had never talked about that, but like, I just
- 12:31Speaker 1: don't recall the time recently when that has been the case,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and I could be wrong. So I'm just trying to
- 12:36Speaker 1: figure out, like, as a black person, a person of color, whatever,
- 12:40Speaker 1: why should I care about where Trek is now? I mean,
- 12:44Speaker 1: that is brave New Worlds, and that's and that's pipe
- 12:46Speaker 1: and that's a white man. I don't care about the
- 12:47Speaker 1: white man.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Is a hard question to ask right now. I'm not
- 12:51Speaker 3: mad at you, Like it's this new era of Trek
- 12:55Speaker 3: isn't quite right. I'm gonna just it isn't quite right.
- 12:58Speaker 3: It is not hitting on this same level that it
- 13:01Speaker 3: used to be with some of the way it spoke
- 13:02Speaker 3: to societal issues, like right now, the way the TV
- 13:08Speaker 3: market is set up, like Star Trek is the biggest,
- 13:13Speaker 3: is the biggest franchise period in TV history. That's a
- 13:16Speaker 3: long discussion. There are several points in terms of you know,
- 13:19Speaker 3: there's a lot of things with TV that we consume
- 13:21Speaker 3: now that we do because of Star Trek. You think Cliffhangers.
- 13:24Speaker 3: We love Cliffhangers because of two shows, Dallas and Star Trek.
- 13:28Speaker 3: You know, technology and stuff. It's Star Trek. The way
- 13:31Speaker 3: they were speaking to societal issues in the nineties and
- 13:33Speaker 3: even in the sixties, it's Star Trek, you know, and
- 13:36Speaker 3: all these different shapes and forms. So you really have
- 13:39Speaker 3: to go back for some of that stuff you're looking for.
- 13:41Speaker 3: And I think that's what a lot of us are
- 13:42Speaker 3: looking in the franchise going forward is to get back
- 13:45Speaker 3: to like it's one of the peak things is Yes,
- 13:47Speaker 3: Star Trek is a societal commentary. That's what it does.
- 13:51Speaker 3: That's what pissed people off. That's why Southern States wouldn't
- 13:54Speaker 3: air the Kirknew who are kissed from back of the
- 13:56Speaker 3: day because you're not going to have this white man
- 13:58Speaker 3: kissing this negro. You know, it's there, the history is there,
- 14:03Speaker 3: and Trek has stood loudly, and I think right now
- 14:05Speaker 3: a lot of us is kind of like, yeah, what
- 14:07Speaker 3: are what are you doing? Discovery track B Yeah, and
- 14:12Speaker 3: they're not. And part a big part of that is yeah,
- 14:14Speaker 3: ten episode season, so it's all story story, story versus
- 14:18Speaker 3: you know, what we used to back in the day
- 14:20Speaker 3: was cable airing was yeah, you had twenty six episodes,
- 14:23Speaker 3: so you could take two or three here that didn't
- 14:26Speaker 3: have to do with some big overarching thing and get
- 14:28Speaker 3: into some real, deep in the neat stuff, whether it
- 14:31Speaker 3: be you know, issues with sexuality or gender or you know,
- 14:35Speaker 3: race politics or environmentalism or you name it. Star Trek
- 14:38Speaker 3: has addressed it. But just right now, the way the
- 14:41Speaker 3: TV scene now streaming is set up, you can't do
- 14:44Speaker 3: that and that's one of the biggest problems as you
- 14:46Speaker 3: know what discovery is. You didn't have that space to
- 14:49Speaker 3: breathe and grow and to really get into some character
- 14:51Speaker 3: niches and really understand some of these folks because you
- 14:53Speaker 3: only got so much limited time, right with these shows?
- 14:58Speaker 1: Do you think though it was just because is they
- 15:00Speaker 1: don't have enough time? Or should they need to adapt
- 15:04Speaker 1: and get better writers or better people involved because and
- 15:06Speaker 1: only had twelve episodes and did some a masterclass, right,
- 15:10Speaker 1: like looking at seasons like The Bear there's only eight
- 15:14Speaker 1: episodes and like set the tone at the time for
- 15:17Speaker 1: what that type of TV could be, like how much
- 15:19Speaker 1: you can express in characters in a short period of time.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So it's not like it hasn't been done in a
- 15:25Speaker 1: shorter format. So what's Trek's problem? Why can't that go?
- 15:28Speaker 1: That's why I'm like, is it just the people who
- 15:30Speaker 1: are involved in the creation of these episodes?
- 15:33Speaker 2: How do we What are your thoughts on.
- 15:35Speaker 3: That the blueprint is there in Deep Space nine, start Trek.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Deep Space nine single handily to me, is the best
- 15:44Speaker 3: entry of in the franchise because it was doing serialization
- 15:48Speaker 3: when nobody was doing serialization like me, I do the
- 15:51Speaker 3: reason one of the reason why I hear I host
- 15:53Speaker 3: the podcast where we review Star Trek and you know,
- 15:56Speaker 3: me and my co host, my good friend Eric Berry,
- 15:58Speaker 3: we're talking. You know. One of the things that D
- 16:00Speaker 3: Space nine ended on was this epic nine episode arc
- 16:04Speaker 3: and we're like, this nine episode arc in this one
- 16:06Speaker 3: season to close out the series was essentially one season
- 16:10Speaker 3: in today's TV landscape, and so D Space nine, you know,
- 16:13Speaker 3: a lot of people are like, oh, it's too serialized.
- 16:15Speaker 3: It was different than all yours, but it does. It
- 16:18Speaker 3: was no longer anybody else. It's no longer anybody else
- 16:21Speaker 3: doesn seasons, you know.
- 16:23Speaker 2: No, it was a lot going down.
- 16:25Speaker 3: They did the arcs, and it's a lot going on.
- 16:27Speaker 3: But it's one of the reasons why that show has
- 16:29Speaker 3: kind of gotten a new life now because folks were
- 16:31Speaker 3: able to consume more of it at one time and
- 16:32Speaker 3: see how these things connect. And so, yeah, it may
- 16:35Speaker 3: not be we need a twenty six season episode. Yeah,
- 16:38Speaker 3: maybe you do need twelve, or you know, maybe for
- 16:41Speaker 3: one story, do you need eight. I think it's one
- 16:43Speaker 3: of those things you need some people in the room
- 16:45Speaker 3: to play with this thing. It doesn't have to be
- 16:47Speaker 3: one formula I'm with you on that. It doesn't have
- 16:49Speaker 3: to be either or, but I think there's somewhere in
- 16:51Speaker 3: the middle to be able to do this thing. And
- 16:53Speaker 3: again taking it back to Prodigy, that's one of the
- 16:55Speaker 3: best things about Prodigy is you have these condensed seasons.
- 17:00Speaker 3: This Prodigy is essentially twenty episodes in a season, but
- 17:03Speaker 3: they're only thirty minutes. And so what they're doing twenty episodes? Yeah,
- 17:08Speaker 3: but you know, you think about the math, it's ten
- 17:11Speaker 3: ten hour episodes, ye yea yea in a sense. But
- 17:14Speaker 3: what they do with that space, it's incredible. The stuff
- 17:19Speaker 3: they packed in. You're like, wait, why are they able
- 17:21Speaker 3: to pack all this in and this short amount of time?
- 17:24Speaker 3: And then yeah, you have a show like Picard or
- 17:26Speaker 3: Discovery or Strange New Worlds, and we're sitting here scratching
- 17:29Speaker 3: our heads like what's what's the disconnect? And so I
- 17:32Speaker 3: can really I think it comes down to you, as
- 17:33Speaker 3: you mentioned, who was in the room, who was putting
- 17:35Speaker 3: these things together, and who has these ideas. And I
- 17:38Speaker 3: think it takes some flushing out and some faith to
- 17:41Speaker 3: try something new because that's when things start checking. It
- 17:43Speaker 3: always pushed the boundary. It hasn't always been about looking
- 17:45Speaker 3: behind or sitting in this stalager. We're stuck in this
- 17:47Speaker 3: nostalgia period. It's like, come on, we have to move
- 17:50Speaker 3: forward to some point. And so yeah again Prodigy, you
- 17:53Speaker 3: want that feel of kind of bounce back and forth again.
- 17:56Speaker 3: That that is the blueprint for Trek to move forward.
- 17:59Speaker 3: That is what you need to tell a good story,
- 18:02Speaker 3: I think in this day and age and still be
- 18:04Speaker 3: Star Trek. Yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 1: And you know, like I said, my level of caring
- 18:08Speaker 1: about the franchise has diminished significantly, But what happened is
- 18:13Speaker 1: my respect.
- 18:13Speaker 2: So it pisses me off.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Like to be honest, like when you were mentioning in
- 18:19Speaker 1: your email, you were like, Yo, why don't y'all talk
- 18:21Speaker 1: about it? I was like, I'm going to show him.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Why am I talking about it? Because what I did
- 18:25Speaker 1: was I want on Google, not Google, I wan on YouTube,
- 18:28Speaker 1: and I was just like, let me just let me
- 18:29Speaker 1: just see where is the state in terms of publicity
- 18:33Speaker 1: or you know, promotion or popularity. The three piece pasically
- 18:37Speaker 1: promotion popularity of Trek as a franchise.
- 18:41Speaker 2: And it is sad.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It is sad in these streets like I want on YouTube,
- 18:47Speaker 1: they even just the views, the views is sad and
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm just like not and it's not really becoming of
- 18:52Speaker 1: what once was. And I understand, like, you know, it's
- 18:57Speaker 1: we're writing on that nostalgia factor, but I'm like, all
- 19:00Speaker 1: those people are so much older now and don't and
- 19:03Speaker 1: aren't some of them not.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Even around no more? How do you tap.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Into We got the millennials and gen z now, Like,
- 19:09Speaker 1: where's the focus on us? And where's the focus on
- 19:12Speaker 1: as mentioned bringing a different voice, bringing in different fresh
- 19:16Speaker 1: eyes to it, and.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Stop relying so much on the nostalgia. Like, yes, Star
- 19:23Speaker 2: Wars has.
- 19:23Speaker 1: The elements of that, but like they have moved on
- 19:26Speaker 1: considerably from just pure nostalgia.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Here's the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars and
- 19:31Speaker 3: this thing. I'll take it there is. Star Wars for
- 19:34Speaker 3: the longest time think of it didn't have nowhere near
- 19:37Speaker 3: as much content as trick like Star Wars, norly just
- 19:39Speaker 3: now in the in the last real the last decade,
- 19:42Speaker 3: but easily since you know, some of the stuff in
- 19:44Speaker 3: the early two thousands has only just now kind of
- 19:47Speaker 3: entered the same realm on the TV side as Treks. Yeah,
- 19:51Speaker 3: WS has mostly been a film franchise. I agree with you.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And let me say sorry one more thing, and let
- 19:56Speaker 1: me say this is not to say that what I
- 19:58Speaker 1: just mentioned obviously Wars still has a lot of nostalgia
- 20:02Speaker 1: factors there.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I'm just saying.
- 20:04Speaker 1: That they don't solely build stories upon that. They try
- 20:07Speaker 1: to build other stories that may have happened around, like
- 20:11Speaker 1: as in the case of Rogue One, where it's just like, yes,
- 20:13Speaker 1: this is about the story of the Death Star and
- 20:16Speaker 1: that and the plans and all that stuff, but it's
- 20:18Speaker 1: like it's giving you something new about how the plans
- 20:21Speaker 1: got delivered to the rebels in the first place, you know,
- 20:23Speaker 1: shit like that.
- 20:23Speaker 3: So but continue, so I might get in trouble for this.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Star Wars is a simpler show. And I'm not trying
- 20:29Speaker 3: to make this Star Wars for a Star Trek right now. No,
- 20:31Speaker 3: but Star Wars is a simpler show. Let's just be honest.
- 20:35Speaker 2: And Wow, you're gonna get yelled at for that.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I'm gonna get yelled at. But it's okay. Star Trek
- 20:40Speaker 3: is a very heady show. It is very you know,
- 20:43Speaker 3: it's very heady. It is very much so all about
- 20:47Speaker 3: the characters and what are we saying, what are we
- 20:49Speaker 3: trying to address and in this day and age where
- 20:52Speaker 3: that's it's coming for folks, like people don't want to
- 20:55Speaker 3: be preached to. Sometimes people don't want to be lectured
- 20:58Speaker 3: to if I don't agree with this message or as
- 21:01Speaker 3: we see the whole progressive woke all this like that's
- 21:04Speaker 3: star Trek gets thrown in with that because they tried
- 21:06Speaker 3: to push things forward. We saw what happened with Discovery
- 21:09Speaker 3: and the way they tried to bring in some trans
- 21:11Speaker 3: characters and you know, or people who didn't just stuck.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Even though these characters have been existing for thirty forty years.
- 21:17Speaker 3: This is crazy, just like.
- 21:19Speaker 1: How they're doing with Superman now all Superman, is it
- 21:21Speaker 1: something I'm like, the nigga came up from to a
- 21:24Speaker 1: Jewish man. What are you talking about? It's always been
- 21:26Speaker 1: about this.
- 21:27Speaker 2: He fought the.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Nazis first, he was fighting kick Like a lot of.
- 21:31Speaker 2: This, a lot of the what you mentioned.
- 21:33Speaker 1: The the wild feedback is just from I don't want
- 21:36Speaker 1: to just say uninformed people, but people who just don't
- 21:38Speaker 1: want to see the truth that's right in front of them.
- 21:40Speaker 1: It's like, this isn't revision, it's history that's happening with
- 21:43Speaker 1: either wars or tracks.
- 21:44Speaker 2: So what are y'all talking about.
- 21:46Speaker 3: Well, how dare you present something to me that doesn't
- 21:48Speaker 3: agree with my own viewpoints? And that thinks that's kind
- 21:50Speaker 3: of you know, as we talked to this whole society
- 21:53Speaker 3: being echo chambers and things, it's easy to see how
- 21:56Speaker 3: it showed like Star Trek kind of gets disregarded because yeah,
- 21:59Speaker 3: it was very much so, Yeah, this isn't right. We
- 22:02Speaker 3: should care about the earth, We should care about other people.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Your race shouldn't matter, your creed shouldn't matter who you
- 22:08Speaker 3: like if you believe something else, we should all be
- 22:10Speaker 3: able to get along. And you know, it's not about money,
- 22:12Speaker 3: it's not about commercialism. We're literally just out here for
- 22:15Speaker 3: the betterment of ourselves and seeing what's out there. It's
- 22:18Speaker 3: not a popular message in this day and age, and
- 22:21Speaker 3: that's one of the biggest struggles is how do we
- 22:23Speaker 3: get that message in something that people are going to
- 22:25Speaker 3: enjoy or want too quick on a streaming service in
- 22:28Speaker 3: this hot topic environment, and that's it's a hard thing
- 22:33Speaker 3: to do.
- 22:34Speaker 1: How do we get the publishers and these production houses
- 22:36Speaker 1: to stop being bitches and go to like, let these
- 22:42Speaker 1: stories come to fruition, Like we saw what happened with
- 22:45Speaker 1: and I'm gonna use Star Wars as another example. We
- 22:47Speaker 1: saw what happened with What's My Girl Root from the
- 22:50Speaker 1: Hunger Games. Oh my god, I just lose.
- 22:52Speaker 2: It, Acolyte.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Yes, you can varying, like when we reviewed it, and
- 23:00Speaker 1: you know, we liked most of it. There was parts
- 23:02Speaker 1: that we had notes on. Fine, whatever, but at the
- 23:04Speaker 1: end of the day, we saw the potential, right, and
- 23:08Speaker 1: that was another true story where it didn't rely solely
- 23:12Speaker 1: on nostalgia.
- 23:13Speaker 2: It try to bring something new across the board.
- 23:15Speaker 1: But it had a black female le character and out
- 23:18Speaker 1: the gate before any episode dropped, it was immediate, I
- 23:22Speaker 1: have a problem.
- 23:23Speaker 3: With this, and you just iron Heart.
- 23:25Speaker 2: We saw that with iron Heart, right, and you continue
- 23:27Speaker 2: to see that with iron Heart.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I have a comment on the iron and I purposely
- 23:31Speaker 1: did it because I'm a troll. I have a comment
- 23:34Speaker 1: on Marvel's Tit not TikTok on their ig from one
- 23:38Speaker 1: of the Ironheart things where I said, iron Heart is fantastic.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Hater's gonna hate. And to this day, and this was
- 23:44Speaker 1: weeks ago, to this day, I get the bots and
- 23:48Speaker 1: I'm just like, I can deal with it, right, these.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Production folks and all that stuff they seem like they
- 23:55Speaker 2: can't deal with.
- 23:55Speaker 1: It, the the paramounts and the Disney's in this and that.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It's like why, it just seems like they're scared. And
- 24:03Speaker 1: I feel like that's the same thing kind of happening
- 24:06Speaker 1: with Trek, like they're scared to just deviate, Like I
- 24:10Speaker 1: don't who are they, as I mentioned, who exactly are
- 24:13Speaker 1: they catering to right now with these Shrek stories besides
- 24:16Speaker 1: the good ones that you mentioned that are out right now.
- 24:18Speaker 1: But the problem is they don't even promote those and
- 24:20Speaker 1: you just mentioned you mentioned before that you can't even
- 24:22Speaker 1: see the first damn season of Prodigy unless you found
- 24:25Speaker 1: a physical copy, which where the fuck am I playing
- 24:28Speaker 1: it on?
- 24:30Speaker 3: They don't know. And outside of Star Trek and Star
- 24:34Speaker 3: Wars in the bigger media things, now you're really tap
- 24:36Speaker 3: into the stuff I like, as you know, communications person
- 24:38Speaker 3: and all that kind of jazz. It's just a vibe,
- 24:41Speaker 3: like literally Millennials and gen Z, there is a day
- 24:44Speaker 3: vibe vibe. Gen Z consumes culture differently. I'm not trying
- 24:47Speaker 3: to paint everybody no light or anything like that, but
- 24:49Speaker 3: like the scene has shifted. People are consuming things differently
- 24:54Speaker 3: and say what you want about Trek. Trek has told
- 24:57Speaker 3: the same stories over and over and over again on
- 24:59Speaker 3: all they do was just kind of shift the technology forward.
- 25:01Speaker 3: And I think this weird space where right now, yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 3: the technology is low key matching some of that, and
- 25:07Speaker 3: so we're like, Okay, what does the future look like.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I think that's also half the problem. Right now we
- 25:13Speaker 3: don't we don't know. We're not feeling too believable about
- 25:17Speaker 3: it anymore. You know, it's you know, it's it's feeling
- 25:21Speaker 3: real bleak around here. But again, that's low key what
- 25:24Speaker 3: inspired Star Trek in the first place. You know, you're
- 25:26Speaker 3: talking sixties, that's Cold War, that's you know, the you know,
- 25:30Speaker 3: the Russian Wall in Berlin and all these types of things.
- 25:34Speaker 3: It's the same kind of scenario. So you kind of
- 25:36Speaker 3: need that thing to come together to be like, look,
- 25:39Speaker 3: may be a little tense right now, but there's still
- 25:41Speaker 3: hope for the future and there's still a betterment. And
- 25:44Speaker 3: but I think we believed all that in the nineties
- 25:47Speaker 3: as kids who were raised in the nineties, yet we
- 25:49Speaker 3: got dead all that a lot there is hope we
- 25:51Speaker 3: were the future, the children are the future. Recycle this
- 25:54Speaker 3: Earth Day, all that kind of stuff. And we've kind
- 25:56Speaker 3: of been on a decline since, and I think that
- 25:59Speaker 3: that's hard to turn that around because it's just like, well,
- 26:01Speaker 3: if things look real shitty right now, can it really
- 26:05Speaker 3: be all that good? And we see that with a
- 26:07Speaker 3: lot of content, it goes dark because I think that's
- 26:09Speaker 3: how we feel and trying to find that light. Yeah,
- 26:13Speaker 3: it's it's a hard thing to do. But again, I
- 26:15Speaker 3: think that's what Prodigy does well and knocks it out
- 26:18Speaker 3: the park. But you need somebody to come in and
- 26:19Speaker 3: be like, look, it's we're gonna be all right, here's
- 26:22Speaker 3: what the future can look like if we want to
- 26:24Speaker 3: strive toward towards it, or this is what we you know,
- 26:26Speaker 3: this is the picture we're gonna paint. Nobody is painting
- 26:29Speaker 3: that picture. It's going to be interesting what they do
- 26:31Speaker 3: with Academy because Academy is really going to be the
- 26:34Speaker 3: first future. So essentially Starfleet Academy, it's it's they've shot
- 26:40Speaker 3: one season already, Season two is already they're shooting that
- 26:43Speaker 3: right now. That's gonna be the next series that that
- 26:45Speaker 3: will come next year, and essentially it's going to be
- 26:48Speaker 3: a bunch of cadets at Starfleet Academy set in the future,
- 26:51Speaker 3: right post post discovery, So this is you know, we're
- 26:54Speaker 3: it's brand new territory. We're not in the past. We're
- 26:56Speaker 3: not dealing with anything. There's gonna be some legacy characters
- 26:59Speaker 3: in it, but we're going to be far in the future.
- 27:01Speaker 3: So it's going to be interesting to see with this show. Okay, cool,
- 27:04Speaker 3: you're dealing with younger the youth, younger people. What what
- 27:08Speaker 3: are we painting a picture in Because in this future,
- 27:11Speaker 3: the Federation isn't what it used to be. It's kind
- 27:14Speaker 3: of being built back up, it's rediscovering itself. So it
- 27:17Speaker 3: be interesting to see if they use this as a
- 27:19Speaker 3: true Okay, this is what Star Trek can be like
- 27:22Speaker 3: going forward, so that I'm not completely closing the door yet.
- 27:25Speaker 3: There is some hope we'll see I like this.
- 27:29Speaker 1: I mean, and again all all respect, no disrespect. It's
- 27:33Speaker 1: is executive produced by Alice Kurtzman, and that he has
- 27:36Speaker 1: been the mind behind this for the.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Last we're kind of in right now, that's what they
- 27:41Speaker 3: call it, right.
- 27:42Speaker 2: The era, and is it gonna be the same thing?
- 27:45Speaker 1: Like I don't know who the writers are, who who's
- 27:47Speaker 1: involved in the writing of this, but like, are they
- 27:49Speaker 1: bringing like are the people like even the casts themselves,
- 27:52Speaker 1: are there people of color in there? Are there non
- 27:53Speaker 1: binding or people like? Like, where are they going with it?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Do you know?
- 27:56Speaker 3: I mean it's been a while. There's there's definitely a
- 28:00Speaker 3: sister on the show, one of the cadetual black women.
- 28:03Speaker 3: The cast looks good from what I remember. We ain't
- 28:06Speaker 3: seen no footage back that. We ain't no teasers, no,
- 28:08Speaker 3: nothing like that. We don't know much. We just know
- 28:11Speaker 3: the people involved. The cast is solid. But yeah, the
- 28:16Speaker 3: question is what stories are you going to tell? And
- 28:19Speaker 3: Star Trek stories need to be about the people, need
- 28:21Speaker 3: to be about saying something so hopefully, especially in this climate,
- 28:24Speaker 3: if you're not saying nothing in this climate. Yeah, taking
- 28:28Speaker 3: care of that for a minute and come back in
- 28:30Speaker 3: a little bit.
- 28:31Speaker 1: And you know, you made a good point when you
- 28:33Speaker 1: mentioned the tech and as mentioned when I was a kid,
- 28:36Speaker 1: the reason why I was so drawn to it because
- 28:38Speaker 1: I was a techie and and I was always drawn
- 28:41Speaker 1: to that versus worth because I saw like the scientific
- 28:45Speaker 1: applications of everything happening Trek and as you just mentioned
- 28:49Speaker 1: very rightfully, so a lot of that stuff is actually
- 28:51Speaker 1: real life now We're just like, all right, what's next?
- 28:55Speaker 2: Where is the innovation?
- 28:56Speaker 1: Like did they decide we're just never going to bring
- 28:58Speaker 1: new technology ever again? And maybe I've missed it because
- 29:01Speaker 1: I haven't been watching. Have they introduced anything new? I
- 29:04Speaker 1: mean it's always been the tractor beam has always been
- 29:07Speaker 1: the hologram. Room has always been to transport and all right,
- 29:13Speaker 1: and like like even like the way it used to
- 29:17Speaker 1: be is just like in one room alone, like depending
- 29:20Speaker 1: on someone's job function. They had a variety of things
- 29:23Speaker 1: where it's like, oh shit, that was we had that
- 29:25Speaker 1: in real life, that would be wow, right like and
- 29:27Speaker 1: now we got it. And I think the only thing
- 29:29Speaker 1: that's like, for example, the doctor. You go to the
- 29:31Speaker 1: doctor's office there, the doctor's office like we're in school.
- 29:34Speaker 2: But if you go to the.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Doctor's office there they have like the little machine. I
- 29:38Speaker 1: don't want to call it a needle, but hypospray that's
- 29:41Speaker 1: what it is. We got that yet, but like that
- 29:46Speaker 1: was some new shit. It was like, wow, they did
- 29:48Speaker 1: that ship without the needles?
- 29:49Speaker 2: Great? Where's that?
- 29:52Speaker 3: It's scary right now because you said a lot of
- 29:55Speaker 3: that stuff is here now because literally we were inspired
- 29:57Speaker 3: by a trek and people are like, oh, that's cool. Great,
- 30:00Speaker 3: this phones like c phones, your iPad, your tablets, hell yea,
- 30:04Speaker 3: everything with AI and Star Trek has said a lot
- 30:07Speaker 3: about AI. That's that's scary. It's one of the things
- 30:11Speaker 3: that I think Disco failed at because Disco got to
- 30:15Speaker 3: jump to the future, sorry spoilers, got to jump to
- 30:17Speaker 3: the future, and they introduced some things that was kind
- 30:20Speaker 3: of like, eh m hm again what we need somebody
- 30:26Speaker 3: to come in and really be imaginative. And I think
- 30:28Speaker 3: the problem is we've seed. We don't know what does
- 30:31Speaker 3: that look like? Like, I don't know if I could
- 30:34Speaker 3: paint some like crazy stuff right now, because it's kind
- 30:36Speaker 3: of like, yeah, what I.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Mean, what would you want to see right now? That's
- 30:40Speaker 1: technic tech related that we don't got. I mean besides
- 30:42Speaker 1: saying stuff like like you said, they already have the transporter, right,
- 30:45Speaker 1: they say, get from one place another in the blink
- 30:47Speaker 1: of an eye, Okay, whatever?
- 30:49Speaker 2: What is something flying? The stuff of shuttles?
- 30:52Speaker 3: And they painted themselves in a corner in Discovery literally
- 30:56Speaker 3: are something they're calling programmable matter and literally with this thing,
- 30:59Speaker 3: you can create anything wherever you are at any and
- 31:02Speaker 3: so it's like when you're at that point where literally
- 31:04Speaker 3: I can literally create anything I want at any moment,
- 31:08Speaker 3: and it's kind of like, oh, you've hit a ceiling
- 31:11Speaker 3: and it's one of the things that the star truck
- 31:13Speaker 3: has done wrong. It's painted itself into some corners in
- 31:15Speaker 3: this person era it hasn't needed to, and god, you're
- 31:21Speaker 3: hitting the ceilings. Oh yeah, okay, So literally I can
- 31:23Speaker 3: create anything in my hand at any point. Yeah, well
- 31:27Speaker 3: what else? What else is there? You know?
- 31:30Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 31:30Speaker 3: So I.
- 31:34Speaker 1: But I like the fact that you mentioned Starfleet Academy
- 31:36Speaker 1: because I didn't even realize this was something coming up
- 31:38Speaker 1: again because I have not been paying attention. But it
- 31:40Speaker 1: is coming up as like a drama. So I'm like,
- 31:43Speaker 1: drama in what way? Like are they going to be
- 31:44Speaker 1: tapping into some Love Island type shit or like, what
- 31:49Speaker 1: do they mean?
- 31:49Speaker 3: You just hope it's not a c W teen show.
- 31:51Speaker 3: That's that's what a lot of us are just hoping.
- 31:53Speaker 3: We just don't want to see W teen show again.
- 31:57Speaker 3: I have hope in one hand, but on the other hand,
- 31:59Speaker 3: being a realist, I'm like, I'm waiting for the disappointment.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Like it's I'm waiting, you know, And that's sad to say.
- 32:06Speaker 1: But again, they can be good about trying to get.
- 32:12Speaker 3: Again again, but doing to get back in is prodigy.
- 32:16Speaker 2: And lower decks and lower decks.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Okay, those will not disappoint you. I'm a realist, Like
- 32:21Speaker 3: I love Trick, but I'm also on these ones. I'm
- 32:23Speaker 3: not going to shell out for it just because I
- 32:25Speaker 3: love it. No, because hit the mark. I need you
- 32:27Speaker 3: to hit the mark. You're better, You've done better, be better,
- 32:30Speaker 3: Like I'm not here to accept just mediocre scraps for
- 32:34Speaker 3: the sake of calling it Star Trek and being able
- 32:36Speaker 3: to be like, oh, yep, this new Star Trek to watch. No,
- 32:38Speaker 3: that's not the world I want to live in, because
- 32:40Speaker 3: best leave. I'd rather go watch the old stuff and
- 32:42Speaker 3: enjoy good quality. If you're gonna keep going forward, make
- 32:46Speaker 3: it worthwhile. This franchise is turning sixty next year. Sixty
- 32:51Speaker 3: there is There's no franchise been around that long consistently.
- 32:55Speaker 3: Because even even if it's breaks, sixty's biggest break, Star
- 33:02Speaker 3: Trek's biggest break I think was five years from from
- 33:06Speaker 3: when they started the motion picture in seventy nine. You
- 33:10Speaker 3: had a twenty five year essentially straight stream of content
- 33:15Speaker 3: between movies and TVs. Up until about two thousand and four,
- 33:18Speaker 3: two thousand and five, then you get the movie in
- 33:20Speaker 3: O nine thirteen sixteen, and then now we're in the
- 33:23Speaker 3: streaming era from sixteen on. So once this current edition ends,
- 33:27Speaker 3: we'll be in Star Trek doesn't go through dry spells
- 33:29Speaker 3: like that, Like, it's been pretty consistent.
- 33:31Speaker 4: And dry dry right now, and so it's one of
- 33:36Speaker 4: those things like Okay, yeah, do we need to take
- 33:38Speaker 4: that reset, do we need to like yes, get into
- 33:40Speaker 4: the room, figure some wild stuff out.
- 33:43Speaker 3: But again, it's it's it's this climate is it's right
- 33:47Speaker 3: and also wrong for it all at the same time.
- 33:49Speaker 3: It's a weird storm.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Make how do we I don't know if you have
- 33:53Speaker 1: any ideas, but how do we make it cool? Like
- 33:56Speaker 1: not to say that it was cool during a jj
- 33:57Speaker 1: Abrams era, but like at least it was mainstream. I
- 34:01Speaker 1: feel like this is not even mainstream no more like
- 34:04Speaker 1: it's not having blockbuster films, it's not having must CTV opportunities.
- 34:11Speaker 1: It's just like, if you're a fan cool, you know
- 34:13Speaker 1: about it, and if you not, we're not even gonna
- 34:16Speaker 1: try you.
- 34:18Speaker 3: If you want to make it cool again, swing for
- 34:20Speaker 3: the fences and fight for me. If it's me, I'm
- 34:23Speaker 3: calling up Ryan Cooper. Hey, what kind of story would
- 34:27Speaker 3: you like to tell in a Star Trek set? Because
- 34:29Speaker 3: that's the beauty about it is Star Trek can literally
- 34:32Speaker 3: be anything. It's literally just you take it's sci fi,
- 34:35Speaker 3: so take it, put it in the future, play with it.
- 34:37Speaker 3: It could be anything, as long as you're speaking about
- 34:39Speaker 3: the people. So yeah, what what kind of scenario would
- 34:42Speaker 3: you like? What do you want to comment on? And
- 34:44Speaker 3: so yeah, I'm going for young producer, young filmmakers, young producers,
- 34:48Speaker 3: young writers, because yes, it's we need to let go
- 34:51Speaker 3: with some of that nostalgia and be like, okay, yeah,
- 34:53Speaker 3: what what are what are the issues of today? And
- 34:55Speaker 3: strangely enough that the same things that's back in the
- 34:57Speaker 3: day to a big extent, what's the new viewplating on it?
- 35:00Speaker 3: You know, we're not where we were fifty sixty years ago? Okay, cool?
- 35:04Speaker 3: What does this race issue look like now? You know?
- 35:07Speaker 3: How do these things pop back up? How do we
- 35:09Speaker 3: touch it again? And that's one of the best things
- 35:11Speaker 3: Star Trek has done. It's telling the same stories over
- 35:13Speaker 3: and over again, just different allegories, different things, And I
- 35:17Speaker 3: think that's where you get creative is bringing in that
- 35:19Speaker 3: new blood. Somebody's going to be like, yeah, let's let's
- 35:21Speaker 3: swing for the fences here. That's how we did it before. Cool.
- 35:24Speaker 3: Now it's time for something else. It's time to switch
- 35:26Speaker 3: it up. And so that's what I'd love to see
- 35:27Speaker 3: is Hell, get get a Quinta. You know, you want
- 35:30Speaker 3: to do some comedy or something, Get Quinta up here
- 35:31Speaker 3: to produce something. You know, get get get you know,
- 35:35Speaker 3: get get a get a trans director or you know,
- 35:37Speaker 3: a trans writer, and like get get people with different viewpoints.
- 35:41Speaker 3: Let them fight it out if they need to, but yeah,
- 35:43Speaker 3: figure something out. Because I think the best part is
- 35:45Speaker 3: Star Trek doesn't have to make a point where it's like, yes,
- 35:47Speaker 3: this is the right way. Some of the times it
- 35:49Speaker 3: just asked the question and it lets you figure it out.
- 35:53Speaker 3: And that's what we need to show that's going to
- 35:54Speaker 3: be willing to ask the questions in ways that'll be
- 35:56Speaker 3: like okay, hmm and make you sit with it for
- 35:59Speaker 3: a minute.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like it's not because a lack
- 36:01Speaker 1: of money, because it's still here and I feel like
- 36:04Speaker 1: if two people were watching it, it would still be
- 36:06Speaker 1: running like it's a CSI show, you know, I've always
- 36:10Speaker 1: felt like that, like it's one of the things that's
- 36:11Speaker 1: just always on TV because it's always going to be
- 36:13Speaker 1: on TV.
- 36:14Speaker 2: But that's not enough for me.
- 36:15Speaker 1: And I like what your ideas, like what you're saying
- 36:18Speaker 1: about that, especially like when you mentioned Ryan cool I
- 36:20Speaker 1: was like, oh, Ryan Cooler's take on this.
- 36:23Speaker 2: This ship would be sick, that it would go crazy.
- 36:26Speaker 3: Some afrofuturism in there or something, or you know, you
- 36:28Speaker 3: start playing, you know, because I think the beauty is
- 36:31Speaker 3: literally you can create whatever you need. You just need somebody.
- 36:35Speaker 3: It's gonna be like, Okay, yeah, we in the future
- 36:37Speaker 3: in some years this is the technology and yeah, b
- 36:39Speaker 3: in space that's all. That's all it is. That's all
- 36:42Speaker 3: it is.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Okay.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Well, I will say that you've been somewhat successful at
- 36:48Speaker 1: making me think, oh, maybe I am missing a little
- 36:51Speaker 1: bit of something, So I will. I don't know if
- 36:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna be able to get to producty because you
- 36:55Speaker 1: made it like it was a diamond in a rough somewhere,
- 36:58Speaker 1: but I will I know that it's super available, right.
- 37:01Speaker 3: Like, oh, everything, And again you mentioned paramount plus is
- 37:05Speaker 3: the problem and or paramount.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Is a para is the problem?
- 37:09Speaker 3: Everything is on the service.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Somebody else. Just let someone else whole check. But then
- 37:17Speaker 2: again I don't know.
- 37:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, but no it get if you could hit
- 37:22Speaker 3: that Amazon Prime real quick, find you a season one
- 37:24Speaker 3: DVD for Prodigy and then make sure you can't. Season
- 37:27Speaker 3: two is still on Netflix till the end of the years.
- 37:29Speaker 3: You can, and it's a quick it's a good bingeable watch.
- 37:31Speaker 3: They said they're thirty minutes enjoyable. That's that's the way
- 37:34Speaker 3: to go to give you a taste of of what's
- 37:38Speaker 3: really good. Then the other stuff you can check out for,
- 37:40Speaker 3: just like season three off a card, Oh Chef's Kiss.
- 37:43Speaker 3: If you are a fan of Old Trek and know
- 37:44Speaker 3: like that is that issaug A lot a lot of
- 37:48Speaker 3: people were asking for which is great. I don't need
- 37:50Speaker 3: all of that, you know, switch it.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Up a little bit, No, not, I agree with you
- 37:54Speaker 2: for car was pretty good.
- 37:55Speaker 1: Okay, I think you're successful. I will give it a
- 38:01Speaker 1: shot and I might comments on it during the main show. Okay,
- 38:06Speaker 1: So okay, because again I appreciate that you challenge us
- 38:10Speaker 1: and said what happened?
- 38:12Speaker 2: Why y'all don't care? Why y'all not giving it the
- 38:14Speaker 2: same amount of love.
- 38:15Speaker 1: But but thank you. You mentioned before you have a podcast.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Can you tell us more about that?
- 38:21Speaker 3: Sure, it's taught us Star Trek from sixty thousand Light Years.
- 38:25Speaker 3: You can find it on all social platforms at st
- 38:29Speaker 3: the word from six zero l K y S what
- 38:33Speaker 3: It's me and my friend Eric Barry better known as
- 38:35Speaker 3: Treky before seven. As we kind of have been ranching
- 38:38Speaker 3: up to this sixtieth anniversary next year, we've just been
- 38:41Speaker 3: going through each series just kind of looking at it,
- 38:44Speaker 3: so taking, you know, what is what was this series doing,
- 38:46Speaker 3: What were they talking about? Did we like, what we like?
- 38:48Speaker 3: What we not like? And kind of taking that that
- 38:50Speaker 3: that high you know, far away view sixty thousand light years.
- 38:53Speaker 3: We're not getting to the nitty gritty. We're not doing
- 38:55Speaker 3: episode by episode and now it's just kind of the
- 38:57Speaker 3: big picture for all these shows. And so we're getting
- 39:00Speaker 3: ready to start Discovery and I've been putting that off
- 39:03Speaker 3: because that's just gonna be a lot of issues. But
- 39:05Speaker 3: we're gonna get into it because we talked about Axe.
- 39:07Speaker 3: I love Star Trek, but I'm gonna criticize where it's due.
- 39:10Speaker 3: So check that out. And it's it's a fun it's
- 39:13Speaker 3: a fun time. If you ever, you've never been a
- 39:15Speaker 3: Star Trek fan, you just want to get a little taste.
- 39:17Speaker 3: Check it out. We give you why it's important, what
- 39:19Speaker 3: it means to us as fans or as people who
- 39:21Speaker 3: love it, and our connection to it. So yeah, definitely
- 39:24Speaker 3: check us out.
- 39:25Speaker 1: And yeah yeah, and where can people find you they
- 39:28Speaker 1: want to argue with you?
- 39:29Speaker 3: J Clark seven eighty seven. All platforms, please, I welcome
- 39:33Speaker 3: the smoke. Bring bring you know I I one. I
- 39:38Speaker 3: have your opinion, like for example, your iron Heart reviews.
- 39:41Speaker 3: That's the type of shit I love. Like to be
- 39:43Speaker 3: able to be like, nah, I love this, I hated this,
- 39:47Speaker 3: not they failed here, And because there's the beauty of
- 39:49Speaker 3: between all the episodes and to see the dynamics change
- 39:52Speaker 3: and actually having that conversation, that's the type of smoke
- 39:55Speaker 3: I love. If you told me you hated Trek and
- 39:58Speaker 3: couldn't stand its guts and connect, I should be like,
- 40:00Speaker 3: this is why I'm.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Not gonna hate you.
- 40:02Speaker 3: That's that's fair perspective, you know it is. But can
- 40:05Speaker 3: we at least talk about it from not some not
- 40:07Speaker 3: just hate Treck I hate you. No, No, let's let's
- 40:09Speaker 3: talk about it and have this discussion. So yeah, bring
- 40:11Speaker 3: the smoke. That's one of the things we do on
- 40:12Speaker 3: the show. It's, you know, because doing He's a white guy,
- 40:15Speaker 3: so and he's one of the reason why I asked him.
- 40:16Speaker 3: It is like we're coming from different perspectives. You're doing
- 40:19Speaker 3: it from this mainstream thing, but you're not going to
- 40:21Speaker 3: look at some same ways I will. I'm looking for
- 40:24Speaker 3: some of those cultural connections. I'm looking for those times
- 40:26Speaker 3: when it says something a little different or a little deeper.
- 40:29Speaker 3: But then it's also nice to hear him if he
- 40:31Speaker 3: does catch it, or he has that respect for it,
- 40:33Speaker 3: or he's bringing perspectives I've never heard. And that's really
- 40:36Speaker 3: what we do on the show and one of the
- 40:38Speaker 3: things I just enjoy in general. So you want to
- 40:40Speaker 3: have no conversations with me and I talk about it all.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Bring the smoke, Okay, I love it. I love it, Jason.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being on.
- 40:49Speaker 1: Thank you for taking a time to talk to me
- 40:50Speaker 1: about this, for not backing down and say no, you
- 40:54Speaker 1: gotta listen to this, so you gotta watch it rather
- 40:56Speaker 1: so I appreciate that, and thank you out everybody for listening.
