Shah Ismail I's Poetry: The Anarchic Sufi Verses of Khatai
Before Shah Ismail I founded the Safavid Empire, before he rode into Tabriz at the head of the Qizilbash, he wrote poetry. Under the pen name Khatai, the teenage warrior-saint composed ecstatic, violent, and deeply heretical verses in Azerbaijani Turkish that blended Shiite devotion with extremist Sufi claims of divinity.
