Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: All right, back again with one of the best in the business all season long has been great to have Nick Wagner on the show ESPN one of the great observer observers not the right word because it sounds so passive I think an excellent football analyst and reporter from ESPN and always working on something cool always insightful always thoughtful.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: And so, you know, we had the big end-to-season, Kyle and John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch, press conference, there's so much to talk about from this thing, going out the way they did, even for a team that had lowered expectations to be beat by your rival, that way, very frustrating.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so there's a lot of really specific stuff, Nick, but you've seen every one of these.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: between John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan, would you think of this one?
- 0:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I thought it was very informative and interesting, obviously there were certain, I mean, we're, you talk about running the gamut.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about, you know, players leaving and guys potentially staying, you know, electrical substations.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we got, we got a little literally, a little bit of everything in that press conference, but I think for me, guy, the big takeaway, you know, me, I like to think big picture, like what's the,
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: what's the big takeaway here because a lot of those things are just like smaller parts of the big picture or smaller pieces of the puzzle and I thought there was it was interesting to hear Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch both talk about where this team is positioned going into this off season and the reason I say that is because and I wrote about this at the beginning of the year
- 1:38[SPEAKER_01]: The Niners view things in kind of three-year cycles, right?
- 1:41[SPEAKER_01]: And this was the first year of a new cycle.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_01]: So people call them Super Bowl Windows.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_01]: The Niners call them cycles.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_01]: And this for them, they knew there's going to come with some bumps along the way.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: They knew it was probably going to be difficult this year.
- 1:55[SPEAKER_01]: But after doing the dramatic roster reset that they did, and the injuries that they had,
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: come out on the other side of it, I think they believe and just reading between the lines from what they were saying yesterday, they're further along now than I think they thought they were going to be sitting here on January 22nd of 2026.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: And so my takeaway is more of like they're in a position now where especially when you just subtract Brandon, I use contract, they're going to have some cap space to play with that
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think they can be a little bit more aggressive this off season than maybe they would have intended to be at this time last year if they were just kind of projecting out where they're going to be because they did finish 12 and 5 and because they did come so close to having the number one seed in the NFC and because they did win a playoff game so I think in their minds it's it's a couple of things it's one were further along with the guys that we have to we're going to get some big name guys back
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: Now, how much you can count on those guys?
- 2:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's up to the in the eye of the beholder, but also I think they feel I feel responsible to make sure that they give those guys who have been such a fat apart of the fabric of this franchise for so long Another real shot at this thing So I think you put all that in the pot, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see the foreigners I'm not sitting here saying they're gonna go crazy and Buy every free agent make every big trade, but I do think they're probably gonna be a little bit more aggressive certainly
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: more aggressive than last year, which isn't a high bar to clear, but I think a little bit more aggressive than people might have expected to, or maybe even they expected to be, like I said, if you'd asked him a year ago.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, the eye-uke thing I thought was insightful, although I thought Kyle's best line was, if it's confusing, it's because we're confused.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, that is that, and John didn't mention, Lynch didn't mention, Capic seller, you know, money accelerating against the cap.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know, you would know better than me.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I know that not every team does not get insurance on it's some teams doing insurance on their biggest contract.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: Some teams do insurance on all of their players.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Just kind of a blanket number.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_00]: I think the night, I'm pretty sure the night is in the category of a team that does it.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: And they are.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: They are okay.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_00]: And you do get cap relief.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_00]: like George Kittle's money and whatever they collect on insurance from his injury, I think you do get that money then becomes accessible to your cap, right?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a cap credit and it doesn't come back immediately.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: It comes back a little further down the line.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: I forget exactly.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: what the timeline is.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's a year later or if it's a later in the year, but yes, they will get, they will get cap credit back for for some of the guys that definitely insurance on the bigger contracts, the Nick Boses, the Fred Warner as well too.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: So there will be a little piece of that is factored into the puzzling.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the high-up thing that will be accelerated, you know, the question is, did they do?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: the post-June one designation can they get anything form and trade my guess would be no we can get it at a little further more if you want but I I you know it's really more with the IU situation about saving the guarantees the which they already did and then clearing up what is beyond 2026 so 2027 2028 if they do want to make additions or if they want to move things around with guys like Trent because they're going to have to do something with Trent's contract most likely you can move some things around it at least freeze them free I know people love
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: But it's the annual tradition.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it is it is definitely going to be coming more money and moving it down the road.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, but that's, but that's all part of the calculus that they're going to have to do here over the next couple of months before we get into free agency.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you, a season end so fast and you go from, hey, it's a, it's a, it's a gravy year, which was kind of some of the underlying specialists they had all the injuries.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I was good with that.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_00]: I was with it.
- 5:38[SPEAKER_00]: So like, okay, now it's 2026 and, you know,
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: you don't get in 26.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I do think there are, you would have loved to have ended this year going, Ricky Purcell's a core member of the future, Ronaldo, Green's a core member of the future, Dominic, Poonie's a core member of the future, Moaquin, Mustafa's a core member of the future, Alfred Collins and Nick Martin and up to the town in CJ West and Jordan, Wackins and Jordan James and Marquis Sigo.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: Now Sigo was a fifth round pick, but like, you've got a bunch of core guys there.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: And I think of that group.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_00]: Right now, if we said,
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: I think you'd have to say Alfred Collins is there, you'd have to, you'd have to say for sure up and stout is there, you'd have to say CJ West is there, I don't think anybody else is a, if we said lock that like guarantee it, I don't think you can guarantee the tell me maybe I'm being aggressive here, maybe I'm still mad about being there for 41 to 6.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_00]: I don't mind losing.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but gosh, watching that game was painful.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: But like is Renardo definitely on the team is pure sold.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: Definitely on the team is puny a hundred percent.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: You're starting right guard next year is Mustafa starting at safety.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think those are all questions.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think?
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: Or any of those not questions in your mind?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I mean, I think there's a lot of questions and guy you've heard me, I've been drawing on about this for probably two years now and even on this show, I've been drawing on about it.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I think the 49ers are the last couple years, you know, everyone gets excited about the draft classes.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: just because they're playing, right?
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't necessarily mean how they're playing or whatever, and you know, oh, it's good experience.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_01]: And that's true.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_01]: And there were guys who, I think it's good that you see kind of a linear progression, right?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_01]: Where, you know, especially the Upton style to the world where they got better as a year went on CJ West was playing his best football at the end of the year.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: Alfred Collins, a steady progression, all that.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_01]: But these guys are, I think,
- 7:34[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to say like completely rule out the possibility, but at best I think complementary players like I don't think that you've got foundational stars and whenever you're talking about guys you aren't foundational players they're replaceable right like I think that's just kind of the nature of the beast where you have to look into what can we do to get better and I think I
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: I've used the phrase many times of like who is what's the next nucleus of the 49ers like you know who this group is right?
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: It's Fred Warner.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_01]: It's christian McAfrey's Trent Williams George kiddo.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's Nick Bosa some of those guys are gonna be around But three of those guys are coming off of big injuries the other two christian McAfrey Trent Williams are getting up there in a lot a lot of tread has off the tires Right, so how much longer are those guys in the end?
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I look at who is the next group?
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: You say Brock Perti certainly is in that group.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: You'd say diametola and or is in that group?
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: After that, I don't know, like you thought Brandon that you was going to be that guy, but that's clearly not the case.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I say all that to say when you talk about like, you know, what's going to happen with with Renardo Green or Dominic Pune wrote, like, yeah, like, I think they would love to have those guys back, so so that that's one less need that they have to fill.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: But the flip side of that is if there's a really good player that they can get or there's someone they really like in the draft, I don't think they're going to shy away from doing that because
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think the reality is you're not replacing both guards both safety is your other linebacker and your and your other starting corner that's five got that's five plus you know a number one receiver another blocking tight end Who my what am I got left guard yeah yeah left guard right like you can't do all of that but to me like all of those positions.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: The D winners were like they're all.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_00]: candidates for like what's the best player and in this spot we can draft or sign like all those spots are open.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: You know, not to mention D line right and and that's to me guy like and we talk about this more down the road and we get closer to the draft and stuff as I invite myself back to the podcast over and over again, but I think like you have to look at this team right now going like going toward the draft of like okay.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_01]: How can we find the best players available?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I know they'll always say, like that's what they're doing, right?
- 9:55[SPEAKER_01]: They're just drafting.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: But I think this team has been more needs-based drafting in recent years, and they would argue that, well, the needs and the value have intersected.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: But that isn't necessarily always the case.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: And as I look at the roster right now, I would sit there and say that with a couple of exceptions,
- 10:13[SPEAKER_01]: they can go any different way in the draft and it would be fine and it would make sense but just take the best guy because I always say like when the Rams were in there like first window of going to Super Bowl you know with the with the golf teams right the Jared golf teams though that team was known for training for stars because they were drafting
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: solid if unspectacular players like complimentary guys, and the Niners were doing the opposite like the Niners were kind of getting the complimentary guys in fragrance See and they were drafting the George Kittles and the Drake Green Laws and the Debo Samuels and all those stars and I would say that his foot If you look at where the Rams are now in this iteration of the window that they're in
- 10:54[SPEAKER_01]: They have drafted a lot of their stars.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: The Puka Nuku is in the Kyron Williams and their defensive line, basically all of their defensive line would fit that mold.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then the Niners meanwhile, I think they are finding these kind of complimentary guys.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_01]: And that's also part of this guy is like, some of these complimentary guys that we're talking about, they look a lot better when they have the stars next to them, right?
- 11:16[SPEAKER_01]: Like it makes their lives so much easier.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: And that's another kind of aspect of all the injuries that I think plays into,
- 11:24[SPEAKER_01]: Ricky Pierce saw when he's banged up in his own right but he's being asked to be our number one guy in year two coming off a year where he didn't play that much uh for for things out of his control.
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: So it's it's a lot there's a lot of layers to kind of pick through there but for me this offseason has to be about figuring out and no it's so easy for me to just sit here and say get scars, get star players but like
- 11:46[SPEAKER_01]: that has to be kind of a focus of like let's just get the best available guys kind of regardless of position not completely regardless position but for the most part I think you can upgrade just about anywhere on the roster by finding the best available guy the NFC Championship game is this week it is the the two teams that finish ahead of the Niners in the NFC West all the Niners had a chance to finish ahead of both of them.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I think whichever team is in this, in the Super Bowl, I think especially I did my rankings, I mentioned this to you that I people have heard me say this a lot, but I'll think I've said it to you in the movie, Argo made about the Iran, I love that movie.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: There's a great line where Ben Affleck is a CIA agent and he's talking to Brian Kranstrom's ahead of the CIA and they come up with this plan they're going to hatch.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: to rescue these people, and they give them the plan, and Brian Cranson says, this is the best option we have in afflix as of all of all our bad options.
- 12:37[SPEAKER_00]: This is the best one, right?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, yeah.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like, either one of these teams representing the NFC is like Sean McVay winning a second Super Bowl before Shanahan wins one.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know which you would choose.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_00]: Would you rather see Mike McDonald and the Seahawks win one?
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like you'd rather see that.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: But none of these are good, right?
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Options for him.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: But does it feel like Given the last two games against Seattle is Seattle pulled out ahead in a way that's going to take a while to catch them?
- 13:09[SPEAKER_00]: Or are they catchable just because they're quarterback's good, but not immediately?
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you know how I feel about Seattle.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: I think the last time I was on this show, I said, I thought they were the best team, the most complete team in the league.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: Um, yeah, I said you're wrong.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not swayed in that opinion by anything that's happened.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: I'm only bullied and that opinion by what's going to be like.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Did you see Paul fine bomb doing like Paul did like this.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: It was like state mandated apology to Indiana.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: It was the most morose.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: I've ever seen five that'll be me.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: Through gritted teeth.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_01]: No, I mean, I think.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think with Seattle right now, you have to look at them and say, are they catchable?
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe guy that for as good as I've thought they've been all year, like, I don't think they're head and shoulders above.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we've talked about this too.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone in the league is head and shoulders above the teams.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: The other teams at least that were in the playoffs.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_01]: And as we sit here right now.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_01]: So are they catchable?
- 14:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, is it going to take a lot of things to kind of fall right?
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the 49ers would point to week one and say when we had our guys, we were able to beat Seattle.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: My counter to that would be, it was week one.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: Week one can be weird.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously teams go in different directions throughout the season.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of hard to evaluate who the 49ers were at the end of the year compared to week one, just based on who they had left on the roster.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: But Seattle has built a monster in the sense of,
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: they just John Schneider and Mike McDonald, and if you go back, Mike McDonald, if you don't remember this guy, but when he was being hired, he was being corded by Seattle and Washington really wanted him.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: Washington was in on him, and they were trying to hire him.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the things Mike McDonald wanted, and this is rare, you don't see this a lot.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_01]: He wanted a veteran general manager.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_01]: to be his guy.
- 15:03[SPEAKER_01]: And it was part of the reason he preferred Seattle because he believed in John Schneider because he didn't want to have to deal with it.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: He wanted to just be like, hey, here's what I'm looking for.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: Find this for me.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_01]: I trust in you because you have the track or it's fine for him.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_01]: And it was just kind of a stroke of genius in a lot of ways because you don't see a lot of self-aware guys in his position do that.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then you see the moves that John Schneider made.
- 15:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll just point to the safety, M in worry, where it's like,
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: that guy couldn't fit better in a scheme than he fits in Mike McDonald and that's also having a plan like looking at a guy evaluating him and saying this is how we're going to use him and this is going to be the best thing for his skill set and then and again that's just like an example of like kind of across the board so I say all that to say like yes I think the 49ers can make moves that could put them right back in the mix with Seattle but I also don't think Seattle's going
- 15:55[SPEAKER_01]: is going to change and then in the coming in the coming years here.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to continue to have that kind of synergy between McDonald and Schneider and they're going to continue to bolster and already really talented roster.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, every draft for basically 22, 23, 24, 25.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_00]: So four straight years, they have nailed drafts.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: There's Grace Abel and Nicky Menwary this year.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know, Tory Horton got hurt.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_00]: Year before, Byron Murphy, the year before, Devin Widderspoon Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually Arbene, Jerick Reed.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: The year before that, Charles Cross, Boyet Muffet, Kenneth Walker, Abelukas.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, Kobe Bryant.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's five, Reak Woolin.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: That's five straight starters.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: with their 55, fix the 22.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, yeah, it's a great call.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: I did not remember that about Mike McDonald.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's the other thing.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: Is it does feel like that is the worst coach you could have in the division.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, it is, well, especially for offensive guys like Shandehann and McVay, right?
- 17:01[SPEAKER_01]: Like it's kind of the answer to them in terms of a defensive coach who is brilliant, right?
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: And has certainly given Kyle Shandehann's offense
- 17:12[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think a lot of that is personnel based.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_01]: I, you know, I wrote a lot about it.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: I, I guess, should say I wrote about it.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: I tweeted about it the other day when I was watching the rewatch and the game I was sitting in the Seattle airport and watching the game on my computer and the lounge.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_01]: And it just jumped out to me again, like how little speed the 49ers had, especially compared to Seattle.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I tweeted about it.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: And then yesterday, Kyle Shane and John Lynch were asked about this.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: sure and I want to be clear like I'm not just saying like they need to go get Danny like three Danny Grace the who run four threes or four twos like that's not what I mean by speed it's like play speed and it's not just offensive skill position guys it's linebackers who can get downhill it's safety so you could run the alley it's all that stuff edge edge rushers who you know it can cover 10 yards in a
- 17:58[SPEAKER_01]: really short period of time.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_01]: All of that stuff stands out and, you know, see out all the thing that's jumped out to me the most watching them over the two or the last three weeks is how good a tackling team they are, they're really good tackling team, but part of the reason they're really good tackling is because if one guy gets there and he gets his hands on you, six others are going to be there in a blink of an eye and then you're down and so
- 18:20[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I think that part was glaring to me, watching those last two Niners Seahawks games where it was like one team was playing in fast forward, and the other team was going in real time.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: It was so clear in person.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the, the, the, the Rashid Shaheed end around.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_00]: Forget about the kickoff return touchdown at the end around.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: Rashid Shaheed is running like 80% speed that whole play.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: And the Niners, you know, I, the, the Niners best try.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: at Horizontal Speed was the op, the juice McAfrey option play.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: And no chance, and not to mention the lack of vertical speed which we've been talking about for years.
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: And they've been trying, they've been trying for years.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: So, got there so many ways to go.
- 19:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like I did think in that game, and I know you saw the PFF data, it was in terms of like the longest parties ever held the ball.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: That game was a great example of where things can really go sideways for a quarterback.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: He had to make decisions.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: Even though the time to throw was long, it makes it look like he didn't have to make quick decisions.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: I thought one of his great skills that was on display is just a rare skill.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: which is the ability to not get sped up mentally.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_00]: I thought, I know he threw the pick, but I thought his mind, especially early in that game was really calm, when things were breaking out all over him, and guys weren't getting open.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, I think that to me feels like the primary issue offensively.
- 19:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's not Brandl.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: I know Brandl has become a lightning rod, which is for whatever.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: But it's that no one's getting open.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't know.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: How do you, like, we've seen in that last couple of years, are you going to do, are you going to draft your receiver again to fix that right away?
- 20:13[SPEAKER_00]: That does not feel like the fix.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, I mean, and there's a real chance they're going to need more than one, and and by more than one, I mean, more than one, like ready to play receiver, not just guys you're adding to the depth chart and hoping that they can get there, but yeah, I think I've written this, I said this to our friend Tim Kowakami on his podcast, like I think that they're going to be big game hunting at why receiver this offseason.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they kind of have to be
- 20:40[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, John Lynch said yesterday that John Jennings, they'd like to bring him back and I'm sure they would to some extent, that's obviously going to be price dependent.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a number that they would be comfortable with.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: But John Jennings didn't sound like someone in a locker room who's expecting to be back.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_01]: He was pretty emotional talking about it the other day.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: So if he leaves, you definitely have to get, you have to get at least two.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe a third because you don't know what Ricky Purcell is.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_01]: And Purcell has shown the flashes,
- 21:09[SPEAKER_01]: if he's not on the field, it doesn't matter.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I know that stuff is out of his control, but that's just kind of the harsh reality of where we are two years into his career.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: So, I think there's going to be some available options in the trade market.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's a couple of big name options that they can explore.
- 21:26[SPEAKER_01]: Who do you like?
- 21:27[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I threw the name out there.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: Tim wrote about it yesterday, but Justin Jefferson,
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: and and the reason I threw the name out was just because there's rumblings there's rumblings around the league that um he's not super thrilled with the situation there obviously they are in a kind of quarterback um conundrum right now and yes there's financial ramifications if they were to move on from his deal that would be a huge hit but if they could get multiple first round picks or whatever like the 49ers I know it's just me piecing things together rumblings about his unhappiness plus
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: I know how the 49ers affinity for him, you know, you put that together.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: If he were to be available, and again, that doesn't mean that he will be.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe he won't be, and they've probably shouldn't be.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_01]: What's that?
- 22:10[SPEAKER_01]: What's that?
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: What's that compensation to me and I would think at least, I'd say probably two ones.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: But the problem is, is if he does become available,
- 22:21[SPEAKER_01]: everyone loves Johnson.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: So then you run into like how do you know how much of a bidding work and you get into and you know how much do you have to give him an extension or give him more money because Minnesota would obviously be eating a lot of the you know the signing bonus and all that and he would be a very reasonably priced receiver but we all know that doesn't last very long either but that's just an example of like this is a situation to monitor
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: AJ Brown is a guy I think will be available who I could see being someone who would make you know would would be a fit here if if the Niners wanted to look into that and I would think the price for that would be a lot lower than it would be for someone like yours but I'm just thought these are like the kind of things that need to be monitored because that's the kind of guy the 49ers need to get and everyone says well they don't they don't have to get a number one receiver they have George Kittle and they have Christian McAfrey and you know it's like
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's not about that.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: They need good players and and a guy like Jefferson is I think he's 26 guy like He would be yeah, I keep talking about that nucleus that next nucleus like yeah, he's around for a while and they they loved him they still love him everyone loves him so Again, I'm not that's not a prediction of any kind, but it's just one of those things where it's like if if this Then this and the second part of that would be I think the 49ers would be very very interested if if those types of scenarios presented themselves
- 23:41[SPEAKER_00]: What is, and I wonder if these two things fit together, although it feels, you know, like, it doesn't mean you're not giving up to ones in addition to the player, but what is Max?
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: I was debating this with a buddy yesterday.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_00]: What is Max Jones's value right now?
- 23:55[SPEAKER_00]: What does he represent?
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's two ones plus Max Jones.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I think that would be a lot, although it'd be interesting for them to trade for give up a lot for a quarterback who would probably need an extension of his own, which wouldn't be super cheap.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: And then trade away his best target, I mean, in the process.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know how likely that would be, but let's talk about Mac real quick.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: So yesterday Kyle Shanahan was asked about it and he said, you know, we're not in the business of trading away good players.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_01]: and then he and John Lynch kind of went on praising, praising Mac.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_01]: It was very obviously a like, we're not going to give Mac away, but if someone wants to make us the right offer, certainly we would consider it.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: And for my understanding, those conversations have taken place, everybody's on the same page.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_01]: I think Mac would want an extension if he were to go somewhere else in a trade because his contract for next year is very minimal.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_01]: But it just logically,
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: If the Niners did keep him, let's say, and he doesn't even play, or if he does play any plays well or close to what he played last year, this past season, the cutoff has to be a third round pick at the worst, because that's what they could get theoretically in a comp pick.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_01]: If he were to leave as a free agent, the following year.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: My understanding is, as I think it would take more than that, I think it would take something closer to like a second-round pick for the Niners to consider it.
- 25:20[SPEAKER_01]: And there's a lot to consider, because Brock Perty hasn't been able to make it through full season's healthy.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know that it's a slam dunk that he goes.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's understood by both sides that that's the most likely outcome.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I do think the 49ers, if they get multiple offers for him that are about the same, would give Mack a little bit of a say in it too.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of do right by him.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think that would be in play also.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of layers to that one as well, but you know, Kyle Shannon, Shannon said he'd be surprised if Mac wasn't a part of them next year.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would probably go the other way with it and say I'd be surprised if he is.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_01]: Just because I think that the supply and the demand would put him in a real like cat bird seat in terms of desirable desirability to other teams.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_00]: What's your take on defensive coordinator?
- 26:05[SPEAKER_00]: Are they just checking boxes for the NFL or are they gonna consider somebody other than Gus Bradley thing?
- 26:11[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, you know, the Brian floor, like there are guys out there that would be Brian floors isn't gonna be the guy.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_00]: As we're talking Thursday, midday, apparently Jim Schwarz is a candidate to get the Browns job.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that feels perfect, but what do you think?
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, I think I think the Niners have been realistic about this.
- 26:29[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a few things to play here.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_01]: One, I think Gus Bradley is the obvious favorite.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: Anyone listening to Kyle Shanahan yesterday.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: That was very clear, but part of that is just based on the fact that there's not.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: necessarily an obvious path to a guy like Jim Schwartz who, if he were to come free, I think that could change the calculus a little bit.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: It would at least lead to more conversations that could change that calculus.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: So, but as we sit here right now, A, he's a real candidate to be the Brown's head coach, and B, he's still under contract to the Browns, and if the Browns do hire a young, hot shot offensive guy like Nate Shieldhouse, for example, from from the Rams,
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think Nate would probably like to have an experienced veteran defense coordinator who's been at coach before.
- 27:14[SPEAKER_01]: There to help him, you know, kind of through the process and was really had, you know, led a very good defense last year.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, and he's still under contract.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it'd be really, it's just, it's just, it's just difficult.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I, after solid left, I kind of framed it on Twitter as like, let's just keep an eye on that situation.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: with Jim Schwartz and Cleveland because if things shake out a certain way, maybe it would change this.
- 27:35[SPEAKER_01]: But I think right now with Gus Bradley, he's been here for a year.
- 27:39[SPEAKER_01]: He has obviously ingratiated himself very well.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_01]: The Niners think very highly of him.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think the other benefit to him, I ask Kyle Shanahan about it yesterday is just how much would he like to have some continuity at defensive coordinator because this is five and five years.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_01]: And he kind of joked about how his wife would like it because they haven't been able to go on vacation
- 28:00[SPEAKER_01]: defensive coordinators, but I think, I think with Gus Bradley, you would probably get some of that, where you would have a guy who, you know, you don't expect him necessarily to be a hot coaching candidate again.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: He's had a couple of cracks at the head coaching jobs.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: So he'd be around for a while and then you could simultaneously
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: have him help, you know, developing whoever your next to meco rines is maybe that's KJ right, maybe that's Daniel Bullock's whoever it is that you think might have a chance down the road two, three years would would potentially be already in the pipeline.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I think those are kind of the the pluses for Gus Bradley in addition to the fact that they really like him and and he's been around for a little bit now, too.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, look, you spend time with a guy.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: I know people have compared it to the sorens in internal promotion.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: I do think it's different in the sense that like that one happened solely, that you really, you really had no options or few fewer options.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: So I say that to say like you, you spend a year with a guy.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: then that is valuable, but, you know, like, the matters that said his, you know, like Niners fans are, I think kind of understandably very hesitant to put it nicely based on the recent history of his time as a defensive coordinator.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I get it.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: And especially when you look around and at least briefly there Brian Flores was available and I use that term loosely, but you know, you could you could argue, well, I didn't they just throw a blank check at him and see what he says, because he wasn't under contract, you know, like there's I, I don't know, right, Steve Spagnolo, they yeah, I'm just saying didn't that happen after the Super Bowl.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: It did, they tried.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: They tried.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: It's been all it was not under contract and then he ended up resigning in Kansas City and you know, they see Rahim Morris who's out there, who is close friends with Kyle Shanahan and they wonder about how that would fit in.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: I would say guy.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't rule out being on this stuff, even if he's not defensive coordinator, I wouldn't completely rule that out as a possibility, depending on what his, his other options are.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_01]: But maybe that would be something that would help alleviate some of those concerns for people if it was just Bradley, but I get it.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: I do, I do get it because.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of people would look at it and say, you know, he didn't have a lot of success in his most recent stop as a defensive coordinator.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: I would also say, it doesn't matter who the coordinator is if they don't get better on that side of the ball.
- 30:27[SPEAKER_01]: If they don't add more pieces and better players, and that's just the bottom line you can't.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: go through another season with no pass rush literally no pass rush like the fact that they made it as far as they did being as bad as they were and and that aspect is a minor miracle and and Robert solace credit found a way to kind of patchwork and piece it together enough so that the offense could care do most of the heavy lifting but they got they got to get better and really at all three levels of the defense for any defense coordinator to have a chance
- 31:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty amazing, I mean, they won the Eagles Game on Defense, they won the Bears Game on Defense, they won the Rams Thursday Night Game on Defense, they won one other game, I feel like what their defense on the field in the final seconds.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_00]: I guess the kicker hit the fall of the battle in week one, but yes, yeah, that's right.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: Seattle week one for three injuries.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: I see other one.
- 31:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you the match up.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: I am very into is I think McDaniel and Harbaugh is a glorious marriage.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_00]: And not for like the funny reasons that are funny.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: Like I think it is I've always thought what's beautiful about Shanahan is what was great about Harbaugh is like I think the
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: So he's an offensive guy, so you can't lose your OC.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: But is dedicated to the run game.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_00]: Like that to me feels like an ideal offensive coach.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, Mike, I know it was doing a kind of, Mike's a run game guy.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: We know Jim's thoughts.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm into it.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: Are you into it?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: I know.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's fascinating and I think I think you get the mix of like Jim Harbaugh's devotion to the run game with Mike McDaniel's creative mind for the run game and it opens up a world of possibilities that are pretty interesting because they're going to put the resources into it.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_01]: We know they're willing to put the resources into the offensive line.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: They've drafted
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I think I do think it's pretty interesting that Mike McDaniel of all the options that he had, and it seemed like he had plenty of them, whether as head coach or as offensive he could have probably had his pick of offensive coordinator jobs.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: He chose the one job where they had the quarterback who was taken after the quarterback.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: He just coached in Miami, which you know, maybe as a coincidence, but I don't know that I believe it's it's completely one.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I think that's a.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a really interesting match and that's a team that I'm not a huge believer in Justin Herbert, but if ever they're going to get Justin Herbert going, I got to think this would be the time.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_01]: And by going, I mean, you know, to the point where he's playing well and play off games and leading them to postseason victories.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I understand there's a lot of things that go on their injuries on the offensive line that have kind of held him back from that.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: But the way people talk about him, he's supposed to be one of those guys who elevates everyone around him and it hasn't
- 33:25[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, anything else that that's you about the, any, any, anything I didn't ask you about with the Niners that you think is, uh, I don't want to leave any Nick Wagner takes on the table because you know, I don't, I don't think, I don't think so.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_01]: I don't, I don't, I don't have strong electrical substation takes.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, I, I'm, I'm not really wanting to go there because I don't have anything for you on that one.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a scientist nor a doctor or,
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: nor do I play one on TV, so I don't have anything for you on that, but I do think that's something that is going to be interesting to watch us all season, not with that specifically, but with the injury stuff, Matt Mayo, go right out of the gate at first question yesterday.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: What are you doing?
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: And Lynch kind of...
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: you know, we're looking at everything which is kind of the standard answer, but I think I think people really want to see some sort of change and I don't know what that's going to require, but there has to be something because over the last decade or so it has been a continued issue, it was safe for 2023 and so it makes you wonder if there's going to be some changes that come along that way.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_00]: Does sound like the news on Kiddles positives?
- 34:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, and actually actually I thought it was fascinating because I talked to an orthopedic surgeon.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: This was before kiddo talked the other day, and I was kind of asking him about, you know, what's the recovery timeline?
- 34:46[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, you know, six to nine months is kind of standard now for Achilles, but it depends on where it was.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_01]: And then kiddo was like very forthcoming with
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: like where the injury happened and all that kind of stuff and the big thing he mentioned was that it was up higher on on the Achilles and they didn't have to drill in through the heel which makes a huge difference in recovery time because there's more blood flow the higher up in the in the in the in the in the in the the Achilles that it is so um yeah kiddo myself and Eric branch kind of kept after him a little bit after he did his scrum does just kind of try to get a timeline and
- 35:19[SPEAKER_01]: He said, well, before November, I asked him about midseason and he said, he's scoffed at that and then I said, week one, question mark and he kind of was coy about it, but he didn't seem to to rule it out.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know that that's going to happen for week one, but I do think it's going to be a little bit earlier than people might have thought when it first happened.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: I'll finish with this, I think, hopefully, a story that I kind of got lost because it was such an early season story.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: I was a proponent of drafting Jake Modi.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_00]: I thought, you know what, I don't tell me about kicker value.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: You can easily waste that pick as they missed on Cam Lotto with the other pick.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: After watching Eddie Pinyaro this year, my mind has changed.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: I would never draft the guy in the top six rounds.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like, Eddie Pinyaro was, I mean, again, so much happened that that feels like it's an old story.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: But it's one of the more remarkable things that happened in this year.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's not only do they find a kicker, like they found a guy who's one of the best kickers in the NFL.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: and seem to have everybody benefited from the new kicking ball that stretches your limits.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_00]: Like guy who was like not a big leg guy before now can come as a 58 yard guy, 55 yard guy.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's really significant.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: guy, there's an argument to be made.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: He's their most important free agent.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, depending on how you feel about Joanne Jennings, like those would be the two, right?
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, to me, they are.
- 36:48[SPEAKER_01]: And so I wonder if, is Eddie Peniro, what his market going to be?
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: There's a franchise tag in play.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we've seen him do it with Robbie Gold before.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I'm sure they don't want to do that, because I think the franchise number for a kicker is like six million bucks, but like,
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know how you can let them out the door in Kyle Shanahan who hates thinking about that stuff.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure it doesn't want to have to think about it again.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_01]: So that's going to be pretty interesting just to see what the approach is with with Eddie P. But yeah, I mean, talk about, you know,
- 37:19[SPEAKER_01]: going from not knowing what you have to having something that's relatively certain at least when it comes to field goals.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: That was, it made a huge difference too.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: We saw it over and over again throughout the season and some of the close games where he was perfect in the other team.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: As we saw, missed more field goals against 49ers than any other team in the league.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_01]: So I guess it all came back around and we talked about regression to the mean and both directions worked out for them in a
- 37:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I guess they're all, they started scoring a lot more points in the back in the years so it felt like Eddie wasn't kicking game winning field goals every week.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, he made some really big kicks down the stretch as well.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Nick Wagner, ESPN, we'll see what comes, we'll see what you're right about next, but I hear it's very interesting.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I always appreciate your time in.
- 38:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you got it.
- 38:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure we'll do it again soon.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, great.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_01]: All right, man.
- 38:16[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks.
