- 1:50Speaker 1: edition of Disguise Coverage, I have got a killer headache
- 1:56Speaker 1: that makes me want to crack my skull open and
- 2:00Speaker 1: relieve the pressure. But I'm trying to trudge through that.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So we can talk about some positional archetype changes that
- 2:06Speaker 1: we might and probably will see in the Buffalo Bill's
- 2:10Speaker 1: defense under Jim Leonard and need to see likely need
- 2:14Speaker 1: to see in the Buffalo Bills defense under Jim Leonard.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I think this will be hold on. I got to
- 2:21Speaker 1: just this this first comment from Joey who says the
- 2:24Speaker 1: tree has gone it must be February. Yeah, I've taken
- 2:26Speaker 1: the big tree and moved it over. I still need
- 2:29Speaker 1: to take the little one and put it here and
- 2:31Speaker 1: fully decorated with February stuff. But I've also got some
- 2:34Speaker 1: sports memorabilia that I kind of want to hang. I
- 2:37Speaker 1: have an autographed Andre Red jersey that I think I
- 2:40Speaker 1: might put here, and I also have an autograph French
- 2:43Speaker 1: Connection Sabers jersey with some other autographs on not too
- 2:46Speaker 1: like Pat la Fontaine that so I might do the
- 2:48Speaker 1: read one here and the Sabers one here, so the
- 2:51Speaker 1: tree would get in the way. So the backgrounds are
- 2:53Speaker 1: work in progress in a good way. But I appreciate
- 2:56Speaker 1: you knowing or noticing that the tree is gone. Yes,
- 3:00Speaker 1: we're going to dive into a fun conversation in tonight's
- 3:02Speaker 1: episode positional archetypes archetype changes in the Buffalo Bills defense
- 3:06Speaker 1: under Jim Leonard. If you are a regular or sometimes
- 3:08Speaker 1: viewer of this show or listener of this show, you
- 3:12Speaker 1: probably heard me say positional archetypes a million times. That
- 3:15Speaker 1: would be on the disguise covered bingo. I've talked about
- 3:18Speaker 1: it for years, how it's impacted the defense at multiple levels,
- 3:23Speaker 1: how it's been good, how it's been bad, how it's
- 3:25Speaker 1: been frustrated by what would be nice to see change,
- 3:28Speaker 1: so on and so forth. And with the injection of
- 3:31Speaker 1: a brand new defensive coaching staff and with a new
- 3:37Speaker 1: scheme in place, with some more similarities than you know,
- 3:40Speaker 1: I think are being given credit for. Still we have
- 3:44Speaker 1: a new defensive scheme, we have a new defensive coordinator,
- 3:47Speaker 1: we have a new defensive philosophy and identity and base
- 3:51Speaker 1: front structure preferences and coverage structure preferences. When it comes
- 3:57Speaker 1: to situational play calls new preferences when it comes to
- 4:02Speaker 1: game planning, how to attack an offense and how to
- 4:04Speaker 1: put them into disadvantageous situations. With all of that comes
- 4:08Speaker 1: archetype changes up front for the Buffalo Bells and maybe
- 4:12Speaker 1: a little bit on the back end too, So we're
- 4:14Speaker 1: gonna be diving into that in this episode. As always, questions, thoughts, comments, concerns,
- 4:19Speaker 1: anything and everything you folks got, feel free to put
- 4:21Speaker 1: it up into the live chats. Super chats as always
- 4:23Speaker 1: get priority because I respect the monetary donation and the
- 4:26Speaker 1: color distracts me from whatever I'm reading on my notes
- 4:30Speaker 1: and bringing the kind of backup to the screen. Want
- 4:32Speaker 1: to grab some comments really quick before we start to
- 4:33Speaker 1: dive into some things here. Appreciate you Bob for you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: being first in and saying what's up and then the
- 4:39Speaker 1: comment here. Yeah, I was on WGR this morning. It
- 4:41Speaker 1: was pretty cool. I was on with Jeremy and Joe,
- 4:44Speaker 1: so I'm glad you heard that. Thank you very much
- 4:46Speaker 1: for the feedback for that. Phil says, equal blueberries prove it.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I don't know if I can. I just got to
- 4:54Speaker 1: take my word for it. I also see some of
- 4:56Speaker 1: the highs and the what's up for me in the chat? Highs,
- 4:58Speaker 1: what's up in the chat, all that kind of stuff
- 5:01Speaker 1: to kind of set the I want to talk a
- 5:03Speaker 1: little bit about the Bills defense under Jim Leonard. Before
- 5:07Speaker 1: we start to tie into or guys to dive into,
- 5:09Speaker 1: I should say that the specific archetypes are were going
- 5:11Speaker 1: to talk about in this episode. I got four specific
- 5:14Speaker 1: ones we're gonna dive into, but I kind of wanted
- 5:16Speaker 1: to talk about just the defense in general. You know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I've at this point, I've talked for over several hours
- 5:24Speaker 1: of air time on Jim Leonard, including the Reaction Show
- 5:27Speaker 1: on Saturday, right after the news dropped of his hiring
- 5:29Speaker 1: last Tuesday, on the back end of the Disguy's coverage, to
- 5:31Speaker 1: talk about why I wanted him, why I liked him,
- 5:33Speaker 1: why I thought he'd be good, so on and so forth.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So again, you're gonna have that three to four odd
- 5:38Speaker 1: front structure when in base, and we talked about, you know,
- 5:42Speaker 1: his version of it is that tight front. So you're
- 5:44Speaker 1: gonna have a defensive end on the inside shoulder of
- 5:46Speaker 1: a tackle. You're gonna have a zero technique head up
- 5:49Speaker 1: on the center or shade it on the center and
- 5:51Speaker 1: then you're gonna have a four eye on the other tackle.
- 5:54Speaker 1: So that's that's how you identify the tight front four
- 5:56Speaker 1: I zero and a four I. We talked about that again.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Base front structure. That is what he is. The Bills
- 6:04Speaker 1: defense is a four down defense. Previously under Sean McDermott,
- 6:09Speaker 1: Jim Leonard plays a good chunk of nickel and a
- 6:12Speaker 1: good chunk of sub package stuff. We are still going
- 6:15Speaker 1: to see, you know, or you're still going to see
- 6:17Speaker 1: things you're more accustomed to seeing with the Bills defense
- 6:20Speaker 1: when it comes to like four down structures. Right when
- 6:22Speaker 1: it comes to four down fronts nickel defenses, you're still
- 6:25Speaker 1: going to see that. The main difference, there's a couple,
- 6:29Speaker 1: but the biggest difference you're going to see within that
- 6:31Speaker 1: is you know, especially at Wisconsin, so Jim Leonard, when
- 6:35Speaker 1: you would go into nickel, you know you'd have four
- 6:37Speaker 1: down and then you have five defensive backs for nickel,
- 6:39Speaker 1: but you'd have two down linemen, four linebackers, and your
- 6:43Speaker 1: five defensive backs, so it would be a two four five.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And what he would do is is your edges would
- 6:49Speaker 1: essentially be two outside linebackers, so two of the four
- 6:52Speaker 1: and then your interior defensive lineman. The two down linemen
- 6:57Speaker 1: were more like defensive ends. So even if you take
- 7:00Speaker 1: something as basic as that, right you look at the Bills,
- 7:05Speaker 1: would the Bills have the type of personnel to execute
- 7:08Speaker 1: that it's more traditional or true? Like okay, if you've
- 7:10Speaker 1: got guys on the outside, it's more like traditional edges,
- 7:13Speaker 1: and then the guys on the interior would be more
- 7:15Speaker 1: true interior defensive lineman. Maybe you could kick Greg russou
- 7:18Speaker 1: In on the inside or Michael Hoyt if he's healthy.
- 7:20Speaker 1: We'll see how healthy he is. But I do think
- 7:23Speaker 1: there's more similarities or not. I shouldn't say similarities. I
- 7:27Speaker 1: don't think it's going to be completely uncharted territory for
- 7:30Speaker 1: this defense like it may seem to be. I think
- 7:33Speaker 1: people are, you know, kind of seeing three to four
- 7:36Speaker 1: brand new defense? Do we have the personnel who's not
- 7:39Speaker 1: a fit? What's gonna happen? I put a tweet out
- 7:41Speaker 1: on Saturday after I did the live show of like, okay,
- 7:43Speaker 1: even if you just ran a true three four, this
- 7:46Speaker 1: is what it would look like for the Bills. And
- 7:48Speaker 1: it's not ideal, right, and you have some questions at
- 7:50Speaker 1: specific spots, which is going to tie into this episode
- 7:53Speaker 1: that we're talking about here. But it's not a complete loss,
- 7:56Speaker 1: cause it's not like this defense needs to be completely overhauled,
- 7:59Speaker 1: like they they have to scrap all of the personnel,
- 8:02Speaker 1: they have to jettison the majority of guys, and they
- 8:04Speaker 1: have to bring in all new people. That's not what
- 8:07Speaker 1: is the case here, and that's good that it's not
- 8:09Speaker 1: the case because they don't have the draft capital or
- 8:11Speaker 1: the financial capital'll be able to pull that off. What
- 8:13Speaker 1: they do have is open roster spots, like we've talked
- 8:16Speaker 1: about on the show, where they were going to need
- 8:18Speaker 1: to add additional bodies to the roster. Even if the
- 8:21Speaker 1: defense stayed exactly the same Sean McDermott, Bobby Babbage, whatever
- 8:25Speaker 1: it was, even if everything stayed status quo as is,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you were still going to need to add bodies to
- 8:31Speaker 1: this defense. So you've got open roster spots, you've got
- 8:35Speaker 1: a new defense. You had to add bodies anyway. Now
- 8:37Speaker 1: you just have to add bodies in a different way
- 8:38Speaker 1: with a different archetype and a different type of skill
- 8:40Speaker 1: set or role or traits or play style to kind
- 8:43Speaker 1: of tie all that in together. The first piece I
- 8:46Speaker 1: want to talk about here, Oh, my head's coming back.
- 8:50Speaker 1: First one, I want to talk about nose tackle. So
- 8:53Speaker 1: this is the first positional archetype that I want to
- 8:56Speaker 1: talk about. So this is somewhat of a similar idea
- 9:00Speaker 1: to you know, the one Tech conversation last year, and
- 9:04Speaker 1: you know, maybe even the year prior, depending on if
- 9:06Speaker 1: how early you were on that train or not. But
- 9:09Speaker 1: you know, the first positional piece, I want to start
- 9:10Speaker 1: on the defensive line, start on the innermost spot, and
- 9:12Speaker 1: that is at the nose tackle. Now, I think Dion
- 9:17Speaker 1: Walker can play in this role. I think it's more
- 9:21Speaker 1: of a moonlighting or a rotational aspect more than a
- 9:24Speaker 1: true nose. I think he had a good rookie year.
- 9:28Speaker 1: I think he far surpassed my expectations of what he
- 9:31Speaker 1: would be as a rookie, especially as a run defender.
- 9:35Speaker 1: But I just don't think for Dion Walker his build
- 9:40Speaker 1: is suitable to be a regular nose and it's not
- 9:43Speaker 1: necessarily like a hugely negative thing. But he's very tall,
- 9:46Speaker 1: he's very big. I rarely appreciate how he's kind of
- 9:49Speaker 1: reproportioned his body composition and his weight. You know, since
- 9:51Speaker 1: being an NFL player, but it's just hard for him
- 9:54Speaker 1: to anchor. It's hard for him to win with leverage.
- 9:57Speaker 1: He's so much taller than everybody he's going up against.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Eyes are naturally going to get under him. And then
- 10:03Speaker 1: because of how he's built, he's not the type of
- 10:05Speaker 1: guy who's gonna drop the knee, who's got that lower,
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know, lower body bend. JP Acosta, who's been on
- 10:10Speaker 1: this show before, always talks about him as being the
- 10:12Speaker 1: Iron Giant, which is I think is a funny reference,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but it's it's kind of true. Like in he is
- 10:18Speaker 1: from a play style standpoint, And I said this on
- 10:21Speaker 1: gr this morning, and I'm reiterate it now. What I'm
- 10:23Speaker 1: about to say, I don't want it to sound negative
- 10:24Speaker 1: because I think when you hear when you hear the
- 10:26Speaker 1: phrase finesse player, people think that means soft, and I don't.
- 10:30Speaker 1: That's not what I'm saying. But Dean Walker is more
- 10:33Speaker 1: of a finesse player. He is more of a penetrator,
- 10:35Speaker 1: you know, win with a quick swim, you know, penetrate,
- 10:38Speaker 1: win with a move, not necessarily a beat him up,
- 10:41Speaker 1: ass kicker type of guy. That's what I think you
- 10:43Speaker 1: need on the interior of this defense. Specifically if you're
- 10:46Speaker 1: gonna play some odd front stuff. Again, I think Dean
- 10:49Speaker 1: Walker can play a little at the nose, especially if
- 10:51Speaker 1: you're getting zone stuff. And he showed a good propensity
- 10:55Speaker 1: for recognizing down plot down blocks and being able to
- 10:58Speaker 1: defeat certain gap scheme runs. Again, he had a good
- 11:00Speaker 1: rookie year. I'm not saying he didn't. But get yourself
- 11:04Speaker 1: a true nose tackle a the verbige I keep using
- 11:07Speaker 1: as a stone, get yourself a stone that you can
- 11:09Speaker 1: drop in right over the center somebody who's used to
- 11:12Speaker 1: a beat him up type of play style. You need
- 11:14Speaker 1: a sand paper type of guy. And it does not
- 11:16Speaker 1: have to be Vita Vea. It doesn't have to be
- 11:20Speaker 1: three hundred and thirty pounds, three hundred and fifty pounds,
- 11:22Speaker 1: some Goliath or some Godzilla King Kong type of dude.
- 11:27Speaker 1: It's more about the play style. It's more about the
- 11:29Speaker 1: skill set, right. It can be a smaller nose who's
- 11:33Speaker 1: three hundred and ten, three hundred and fifteen pounds. It
- 11:35Speaker 1: doesn't have to be some again, some mammoth type of dude.
- 11:38Speaker 1: It's more about the skill set. It's more about the
- 11:40Speaker 1: play style. The example that I continue to use here
- 11:43Speaker 1: of who I'm looking for in this example, and he
- 11:46Speaker 1: happens to be an unrestricted free agent again this year
- 11:49Speaker 1: like he was last year, is Roy Lopez. Roy Lopez
- 11:53Speaker 1: was with the Cardinals in twenty twenty four. He was
- 11:55Speaker 1: a UFA last offseason. I wanted the Bills to bring
- 11:58Speaker 1: him in as a one TECH. He ended up going
- 12:00Speaker 1: to Detroit, played well for Detroit. He is a UFA
- 12:04Speaker 1: once again. I think he could be affordable, somebody that
- 12:06Speaker 1: can get for like three to five million dollars. You
- 12:09Speaker 1: plug him in on the interior, get a good rotation,
- 12:12Speaker 1: let him eat bodies, eat space, beat up dudes on
- 12:15Speaker 1: the inside. You know, I think what's what's also nice
- 12:20Speaker 1: with him is or not even you know that specifically
- 12:23Speaker 1: him is a you know, Roy Lopez is a guy
- 12:26Speaker 1: that I'm targeting. One because I think he can do
- 12:28Speaker 1: the job. But two, unfortunately, as we have to you know,
- 12:31Speaker 1: play this game every offseason with the Bills. I do
- 12:35Speaker 1: think he'll be cost effective. It's somebody you don't have
- 12:38Speaker 1: to break the bank for and you can get this
- 12:40Speaker 1: type of role. Again. He's a plugger inside. He's tough
- 12:43Speaker 1: to displace. He's able to reduce a surface area and
- 12:47Speaker 1: or hold his ground with lean and leverage. He's got
- 12:49Speaker 1: good block recognition across multiple schemes, but he's also got
- 12:52Speaker 1: enough burst and juice to be effective upfield. He can
- 12:55Speaker 1: drive guys into the backfield, he can penetrate a little bit,
- 12:58Speaker 1: and overall, he's just a guy who's gonna occupy and
- 13:00Speaker 1: disrupt flow. Again, a sandpaper type of guy, a grit
- 13:04Speaker 1: guy that's just a pain in the butt to play against.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And I think he'll be cost effective. But say you
- 13:08Speaker 1: don't like Roy Lopez, fine, that is the type of
- 13:11Speaker 1: archetype they need at nose to put in rotation with Walker,
- 13:15Speaker 1: which one I think helps Walker from having to deal
- 13:18Speaker 1: with all the beat him up type of stuff on
- 13:20Speaker 1: the inside. And I also think that frees up Deon
- 13:23Speaker 1: Walker to do kind of a little bit of everything
- 13:25Speaker 1: across the defensive front. A llah. You know what he
- 13:28Speaker 1: did at Kentucky. You know you could put him at nose.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Maybe you could put him in a one. You could
- 13:32Speaker 1: put him in a two or two. I you could
- 13:34Speaker 1: put him in a three. You could put him in
- 13:35Speaker 1: a four. You could put him in a four eye
- 13:37Speaker 1: on the inside shoulder of a tackle. You could put
- 13:40Speaker 1: him in a five, maybe even kick him out a
- 13:41Speaker 1: little wider. I think if you get that rotational nose,
- 13:46Speaker 1: it frees up Dion Walker to kind of be a
- 13:49Speaker 1: little more of the unicorn that he potentially is because
- 13:51Speaker 1: of his size and the athleticism that he has. Again,
- 13:54Speaker 1: he is a huge mountain of a dude. I thought
- 13:56Speaker 1: he played admirably, admirably, admiral h admirably as a one
- 14:02Speaker 1: tech for the Bills in his rookie year, especially because
- 14:03Speaker 1: that's not really what he was a Kentucky. But I
- 14:07Speaker 1: don't think that, you know, putting him as a true
- 14:09Speaker 1: nose or having him be that plugger on the inside
- 14:12Speaker 1: or that type of role. Again, they're not gonna ask
- 14:14Speaker 1: him to be a pluger. They're still gonna have him
- 14:15Speaker 1: penetrate and kind of win in that way. But I
- 14:19Speaker 1: do think you need more of a displacement mitigator on
- 14:21Speaker 1: the interior, somebody who won't get turned, somebody who won't
- 14:24Speaker 1: get moved. And I just think that's a hard ask
- 14:27Speaker 1: of him, down in and down out, because of his build,
- 14:29Speaker 1: you know, the build that allows him to be kind
- 14:31Speaker 1: of that unicorn player is also the same type of
- 14:34Speaker 1: build that limits him in certain ways and allows him
- 14:36Speaker 1: to not anchor at times and will cause him to
- 14:38Speaker 1: get displaced, you know, horizontally or kind of get driven
- 14:41Speaker 1: back a little bit as guys get underneath him. Guys
- 14:44Speaker 1: get torque, guys have leverage, kind of those pieces. Oh,
- 14:47Speaker 1: we gotta stop, Jason. You're awesome here again and throwing
- 14:51Speaker 1: out super chats again, Appreciate the hell OUTI and Jason.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Jason says, man, it's gonna be nice to see our
- 14:56Speaker 1: linebackers involve more in our pressures. The secondary is really
- 14:59Speaker 1: gonna I have to step up as a result. Who
- 15:02Speaker 1: would you like us to target it? Free safety? I
- 15:04Speaker 1: don't know if Rap is that guy. I am going
- 15:07Speaker 1: to put a pin in this because safety is one
- 15:09Speaker 1: of the archetypes you're going to talk about in this episode,
- 15:12Speaker 1: and I will specifically be talking about the more of
- 15:15Speaker 1: like the quote unquote free safety type of position or
- 15:17Speaker 1: a deep safety type of role. So once again, it's
- 15:20Speaker 1: like you peeked into my notes and I see where
- 15:22Speaker 1: you're at and I appreciate you. I'm gona take a
- 15:23Speaker 1: sip of ginger rail because the caffeine helps him my
- 15:25Speaker 1: headache a little bit. So hold okay, now, Oh, also
- 15:32Speaker 1: see this question here from Malley who says, how do
- 15:33Speaker 1: you feel about t J. Sanders? He's going to be
- 15:35Speaker 1: in the next archetype conversation. So it's like you're peeking
- 15:38Speaker 1: in my notes too. You kind of know where this
- 15:39Speaker 1: is going. And Roy says John Franklin Myers as a
- 15:42Speaker 1: nose tackle John Franklin Myers. I hate to keep saying this,
- 15:44Speaker 1: he's going to be in the next segment for another
- 15:47Speaker 1: archetype that we're going to talk about, but yes, he
- 15:49Speaker 1: has some versatility, which is part of what we're going
- 15:51Speaker 1: to talk about in the next one. So I like this.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Everybody's kind of getting there. So again, there are pieces
- 15:58Speaker 1: already on the roster that are present that can work
- 16:00Speaker 1: in Jim Leonard's defense. And I should say that too,
- 16:02Speaker 1: with all these positional archetypes that they're going to need
- 16:04Speaker 1: to add or change or whatever however you want to
- 16:06Speaker 1: verbalize it, it's not because the current players aren't a fit.
- 16:11Speaker 1: It's not because they don't have the guys or the
- 16:13Speaker 1: body types, or the play styles or the skill sets
- 16:16Speaker 1: to run Jim Leonard's defense. That's not what's happening. They
- 16:18Speaker 1: have some guys that can fit already. They just need
- 16:21Speaker 1: more of some supplemental guys or auxiliary guys for specific
- 16:25Speaker 1: roles with specific play styles or skill sets mixed in
- 16:30Speaker 1: to kind of bring everything together holistically and maintain the
- 16:33Speaker 1: versatility and the hybridized nature of everything. Oh, I see
- 16:36Speaker 1: that comment that just came in from Pumpkin and the Goose.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Thank you very much. I appreciate you checking out my
- 16:41Speaker 1: segment on gr I'm glad you liked it. Thank you
- 16:42Speaker 1: very much for the feedback. I appreciate that. I don't
- 16:45Speaker 1: want to bring the comment up because I feel like
- 16:46Speaker 1: it's too pat myself on the back set, especially because
- 16:48Speaker 1: I'm by myself. It's like, oh, look at this nice
- 16:50Speaker 1: comment someone said about me, but I want to do
- 16:52Speaker 1: acknowledge it. So thank you. So yeah again, this is
- 16:54Speaker 1: a scheme that I think, and specifically for Leonard. Jim
- 16:58Speaker 1: Leonard is the type of coach who does a great
- 17:00Speaker 1: job setting his players up for success mentally and schematically.
- 17:04Speaker 1: He's the type of guy who wants to give you
- 17:05Speaker 1: the tools to succeed. You're right, Jared Gingerrel is caffeine free.
- 17:11Speaker 1: But maybe it was a placebo effect because my headachees
- 17:14Speaker 1: been feeling better since I drank the ginger ale. Good call, Jared.
- 17:17Speaker 1: I'm a fool. I literally looked at the cannon and
- 17:19Speaker 1: it says caffeine free. Man, I'm a dunce. I am
- 17:21Speaker 1: not thinking great, but my head aches kind of going away.
- 17:23Speaker 1: So I'm gonna act like it has caffeine in it.
- 17:25Speaker 1: So we're going to ignore this comment and we're all
- 17:27Speaker 1: gonna pretend like this gingerel then I'm drinking has caffeine
- 17:29Speaker 1: in it. Man, I'm an idiot. Yeah. So the style
- 17:36Speaker 1: of Jim Leonard, again, we've talked a lot about the
- 17:38Speaker 1: schematic benefits and will continue to talk about as we
- 17:40Speaker 1: go forward, you know, throughout this offseason. But he's a
- 17:42Speaker 1: guy who knows how to maximize what he has with
- 17:45Speaker 1: his players physically and mentally. Again, schematically, you know, what
- 17:48Speaker 1: do you do best physically? What type of player are you?
- 17:50Speaker 1: What type of play style do you work best? In?
- 17:53Speaker 1: Cool We know how to weaponize you and how to
- 17:55Speaker 1: wield you, but he also does a good job building
- 17:59Speaker 1: them up mentally, giving them the tools to succeed on
- 18:02Speaker 1: game day. You know, the capacity versus capability thing that
- 18:05Speaker 1: Sean McVeigh talks about capability is, you know, you can
- 18:07Speaker 1: give someone assignment an assignment and they can go and
- 18:10Speaker 1: execute it. Capacity is the ability to like build on
- 18:13Speaker 1: that and kind of think for yourself and be able
- 18:15Speaker 1: to operate in the moment for something you maybe haven't
- 18:19Speaker 1: been trained on or you know, given the keys to
- 18:21Speaker 1: before already in practice. You know, Jim Leonard has talked
- 18:23Speaker 1: about in his coaching clinics and different pieces. You know,
- 18:26Speaker 1: the idea of you can, you know, expose players to
- 18:30Speaker 1: the multitude of scenarios they're going to face in games,
- 18:32Speaker 1: but on game day you're outside those white lines, so
- 18:34Speaker 1: you have to count on guys to step up and
- 18:37Speaker 1: make plays in positive ways. You have to give players
- 18:39Speaker 1: room to grow and room to think. So he's not
- 18:41Speaker 1: going to you know, the example. It's funny because he's
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know, got some Rex Ryan in him in terms
- 18:47Speaker 1: of that tree and stylized play. But I think so
- 18:51Speaker 1: many fans are still gunshy from Rex Ryan coming in
- 18:55Speaker 1: and taking over that cold front defense that was such
- 18:57Speaker 1: a good four down type of defense, and everybody like, oh, well,
- 19:00Speaker 1: surely like he'll keep Jim Schwartz. Okay, he didn't keep
- 19:03Speaker 1: Jim Schwartz. Schwartz has gone. It's like Okay, well, surely
- 19:05Speaker 1: he'll still kind of tap into what they did under Schwartz.
- 19:08Speaker 1: And it was like, Nope, he's going to take a
- 19:10Speaker 1: bunch of round pegs and try and fit them into
- 19:12Speaker 1: square holes and everything is going to go sideways. Jim
- 19:14Speaker 1: Leonard is not that guy. He's not going to take
- 19:17Speaker 1: a bunch of players and try to make them bend
- 19:19Speaker 1: to his scheme. He's going to play what is best
- 19:22Speaker 1: for this team. And you know, this year, it might
- 19:25Speaker 1: be more four down structure stuff. It might be things
- 19:28Speaker 1: that the guys on the roster are already comfortable with.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Maybe they don't feel like they're able to bring in
- 19:33Speaker 1: the right bodies from a you know, financial situation or
- 19:36Speaker 1: a draft situation where they can run the full gamut
- 19:39Speaker 1: of what Leonard wants to run, right, So maybe I
- 19:42Speaker 1: don't want to say he waters it down, but maybe
- 19:44Speaker 1: he kind of narrows down the menu a little bit
- 19:46Speaker 1: to play to the players that he has and the
- 19:49Speaker 1: personnel that he has and kind of what he can
- 19:51Speaker 1: get to in the best way. I trust Jim Leonard,
- 19:55Speaker 1: you know, holistically, to be able to put the guys
- 19:58Speaker 1: in the right place to at them up for success. Again,
- 20:01Speaker 1: this is another kind of quote tied to him. What
- 20:04Speaker 1: can you effectively get your guys to do on a
- 20:06Speaker 1: consistent basis. Anything more than that is a waste and
- 20:10Speaker 1: you're not really doing your players justice as far as
- 20:12Speaker 1: what you're trying to get accomplished. If you're not doing that,
- 20:15Speaker 1: you're not putting the game in their hands to let
- 20:17Speaker 1: them win for you. He is not going to put
- 20:19Speaker 1: guys in disadvantageous positions for them, or for the team,
- 20:22Speaker 1: or for himself. So I do think he will adapt
- 20:25Speaker 1: things around the players. But again, the current players that
- 20:28Speaker 1: they do have under contract and on the roster, because
- 20:30Speaker 1: they've got a bunch of guys that are on the
- 20:32Speaker 1: books financially but not on the roster anymore. They do
- 20:35Speaker 1: have some guys still on the roster that can fit
- 20:37Speaker 1: what he wants to do. But again, you need to
- 20:40Speaker 1: supplement that or buttress that with some of these archetype
- 20:43Speaker 1: pieces that we're talking about in this episode. And again
- 20:45Speaker 1: it starts with nose tackle right, So get yourself a
- 20:47Speaker 1: true stone that you can drop in the center of
- 20:50Speaker 1: your defensive line, can play a true nose, play a
- 20:54Speaker 1: zero head up right on the center, or can play
- 20:56Speaker 1: a one tech or just be able to be available
- 20:59Speaker 1: inside you want to go heavy with some other dudes
- 21:01Speaker 1: like you just need that type of skill set. Again,
- 21:04Speaker 1: I thought they needed more of that skill set last
- 21:06Speaker 1: year as a one Tech I sat here and I
- 21:08Speaker 1: pounded the table for Roy Lopez last year. I am
- 21:11Speaker 1: pounding the table for Roy Lopez again. He continues to
- 21:14Speaker 1: be my example one because he fits the play style
- 21:17Speaker 1: and the skill set that I think they need there.
- 21:19Speaker 1: But also again I think he will be cost effective
- 21:21Speaker 1: and not cost effective in like a bad way, but
- 21:24Speaker 1: cost effective in a good way. You know, those type
- 21:26Speaker 1: of dudes are available on the market to some degree.
- 21:28Speaker 1: They don't cost a ton, and I think he'll fit
- 21:31Speaker 1: right in that rotational role right on the interior. Get
- 21:34Speaker 1: yourself a stone, drop him in there. There's a possibility
- 21:36Speaker 1: you could get this in the draft as well. I
- 21:38Speaker 1: know a lot of people like big Citrus Dominique Orange
- 21:41Speaker 1: out of Iowa State. I've watched him a little bit.
- 21:43Speaker 1: That could be fun. I know people like Corleone, the
- 21:46Speaker 1: defensive tackle from Cincinnati. You got Lee Hunter, defensive tackle
- 21:50Speaker 1: from Texas Tech. So you know there are options in
- 21:54Speaker 1: the draft if you want like some heavy hitters on
- 21:57Speaker 1: the interior in the draft. There are options there, and
- 22:00Speaker 1: there's some options in free agency too, but I kind
- 22:02Speaker 1: of just go for that known quantity. Roy Lopez think
- 22:04Speaker 1: you can get him on a one year, three and
- 22:07Speaker 1: a half to five million dollar deal. You know, maybe
- 22:09Speaker 1: you go two years, but you bring him in, let
- 22:11Speaker 1: him kind of eat those ugly down reps, those ugly
- 22:14Speaker 1: down snaps in rotation with Dion Walker, which helps unlock
- 22:18Speaker 1: deon Walker, keep it fresh to do some more of
- 22:21Speaker 1: those fun type of unicorn things that he can do
- 22:23Speaker 1: with his size and skill set and what he kind
- 22:26Speaker 1: of is. Gage says, I'd love to I'd love them
- 22:30Speaker 1: to draft a nose tackle late and sign one out
- 22:32Speaker 1: of free agency. How many nose tackles compete for a
- 22:34Speaker 1: roster spot. That's what's tough, right, because I think you're
- 22:39Speaker 1: gonna play Walker, it knows you know again, I think
- 22:42Speaker 1: you can play him in multiple spots on the front.
- 22:45Speaker 1: He's a weird one for a fit in that type
- 22:46Speaker 1: of defense, right, Like you kind of play him in
- 22:48Speaker 1: a four eye, you kind of play him in a
- 22:49Speaker 1: nose I think if you're getting multiple nose tackles, that
- 22:53Speaker 1: to me would indicate that you're gonna play Walker in
- 22:56Speaker 1: more of a four eye and kind of some of
- 22:59Speaker 1: the interior stuff your four down looks. I would expect
- 23:03Speaker 1: one true nose to make the roster here and be
- 23:09Speaker 1: in rotation with Dion Walker. But if they go with multiple,
- 23:12Speaker 1: that to me would signal they're gonna rock with multiple
- 23:15Speaker 1: and then use deon Walker in some kind of other
- 23:16Speaker 1: way on the defensive line. That's a good question. Oh,
- 23:19Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Russ is here, Russell's I'm not listening
- 23:21Speaker 1: to the podcast because I'm watching old school wrestling and
- 23:23Speaker 1: listening to old tunes that said. Watch Michigan State center
- 23:27Speaker 1: Matt Goldman. He's awesome, but not like them is. I
- 23:29Speaker 1: appreciate all the references here and Russ, I appreciate you,
- 23:32Speaker 1: And I'm sorry you have to watch Michigan State football.
- 23:34Speaker 1: That sounds that sounds rough. Gage says, isn't Walker too tall? Yeah,
- 23:41Speaker 1: but that's not gonna really kind of stop anywhere or
- 23:45Speaker 1: stop being a problem anywhere on that defensive line. Like
- 23:47Speaker 1: anytime he gets guys under him, it's gonna be a problem.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And that's not just gonna happen like oh, on the interior,
- 23:53Speaker 1: kind of on the outside, like it's gonna happen to
- 23:54Speaker 1: him regardless due to six seven. He's too tall in
- 23:57Speaker 1: a good and bad way everywhere unless he's going up
- 24:00Speaker 1: against certain offensive tackles. But that's not gonna happen regularly
- 24:02Speaker 1: for him. So anytime he lines up on the interior,
- 24:05Speaker 1: he's gonna have, you know, the opportunity in a bad
- 24:07Speaker 1: way for dudes to get under him and kind of
- 24:09Speaker 1: drive him and move him and do all that. That's
- 24:11Speaker 1: just you have you dance with who brought you, and
- 24:14Speaker 1: that's who brought you. You know, he's he's going to
- 24:17Speaker 1: get out leveraged a bunch because of how tall he is,
- 24:19Speaker 1: which is part of why I don't want him to
- 24:22Speaker 1: have to constantly deal with that. At knows where guys
- 24:25Speaker 1: can get under him a little bit or where he
- 24:27Speaker 1: has to you know, how much does he have to
- 24:28Speaker 1: two gap? How much is he single gap? And are
- 24:30Speaker 1: they playing a gap and a half? What are they
- 24:32Speaker 1: kind of doing on that interior? How do they kind
- 24:35Speaker 1: of play it? Are they playing it, you know, like
- 24:37Speaker 1: an odd front structure where it is more gap and
- 24:39Speaker 1: half or two gapping, or are they playing it more hey,
- 24:42Speaker 1: you know, five down, everybody's still one gap and we're
- 24:44Speaker 1: getting up field and attacking. We'll see kind of how
- 24:48Speaker 1: they go from there. Oh, I gotta stop again, Jason,
- 24:50Speaker 1: appreciate you. You're extremely generous. Jason. Another super chat and
- 24:53Speaker 1: Jason says, so, ants are you saying that Jim Leonard
- 24:56Speaker 1: will have a number of packages players specific to fit
- 25:00Speaker 1: in the players we have or until players become more
- 25:02Speaker 1: comfortable with the transition. Yeah, I think I think he
- 25:07Speaker 1: will have sub packages and defensive plays. You know, I
- 25:12Speaker 1: have more and so calls that are a fit to
- 25:16Speaker 1: what the guys they currently have are, right, Like, So
- 25:18Speaker 1: for instance, right, say, and as I talked about it,
- 25:20Speaker 1: wass Coonstable to just use this kind of example right
- 25:21Speaker 1: when he would go nickel, it was a two four five,
- 25:24Speaker 1: so you had two down linemen, four linebackers, and then
- 25:26Speaker 1: your five defensive backs, right, And then we talked about
- 25:29Speaker 1: on your front it would be four down, but the
- 25:31Speaker 1: guys in the interior defensive ends, the guys on the
- 25:34Speaker 1: outside were linebackers, right, And the type of guys that
- 25:36Speaker 1: they would use Zach Bond Andrew van Ginkele, Right, those
- 25:40Speaker 1: are the type of guys he would wield in base
- 25:43Speaker 1: but also in nickel. The Bills don't have guys like
- 25:46Speaker 1: Zach Bond. The Bills don't have guys like Andrew Van Ginkle.
- 25:49Speaker 1: So can you still run that kind of stuff when
- 25:52Speaker 1: you don't have those body types potentially? Right? And maybe
- 25:56Speaker 1: you know, hey, maybe Dornan Williams can do some of
- 25:58Speaker 1: that stuff. I don't think he's the path strusher off
- 26:00Speaker 1: the edge that either of those guys were at Wisconsin.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But you look at that and it's like, Okay, do
- 26:05Speaker 1: we have some of those guys who can fill those roles?
- 26:08Speaker 1: Do we have a guy who's similar to Wisconsin Zach
- 26:10Speaker 1: Bonn or Wisconsin Andrew Van Ginkle to kind of use
- 26:13Speaker 1: that example, or you know Wisconsin Jack Sample or Wisconsin
- 26:18Speaker 1: Nick Herbig, like right, those type of dudes. And if
- 26:20Speaker 1: you don't, then you have to sit and look and go, okay,
- 26:24Speaker 1: can we still play that way? Can we still run
- 26:27Speaker 1: those types of packages, those type of plays, those type
- 26:30Speaker 1: of calls, And that's the question that you ask, and
- 26:32Speaker 1: then I trust him to evaluate, you know what, we
- 26:35Speaker 1: still can run that type of stuff with the guys
- 26:37Speaker 1: we have, or I trust him to be like, we
- 26:40Speaker 1: can't do that. So when we go Nickel, it's going
- 26:42Speaker 1: to be a true four down front. You know, we're
- 26:44Speaker 1: not going to do two defensive ends on the interior
- 26:46Speaker 1: and two outside linebackers on the outside. It's going to
- 26:48Speaker 1: be more of you know, Greg Russau to add Oliver
- 26:53Speaker 1: to Dion Walker to Michael Hoyt or something like that.
- 26:58Speaker 1: So yeah, I trust him to kind of set those
- 27:00Speaker 1: guys up for success and kind of build it around.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You know, he has his identity, he has his philosophy,
- 27:07Speaker 1: and he has the scheme that he wants to implement.
- 27:10Speaker 1: But he's going to build that around the players that
- 27:12Speaker 1: he has or look for guys to bring in to
- 27:15Speaker 1: fit what he wants. He's not going to set anybody
- 27:17Speaker 1: up for failure or set you know, anyone up to
- 27:19Speaker 1: be in a disadvantageous spot. Good comment question, russ says, an,
- 27:25Speaker 1: I'm not sure if you watch Texas A and m
- 27:27Speaker 1: Casius Howell, but he'd be fun off the edge for Leonard.
- 27:29Speaker 1: His game against LSU is awesome. He's actually one of
- 27:31Speaker 1: the first edges I have earmarked him and your boy
- 27:34Speaker 1: David Bailey. Just kidding. I know you don't. You're not
- 27:36Speaker 1: a huge fan of David Bailey. Plant the flag on
- 27:38Speaker 1: that early as we were texting about that earlier. Today.
- 27:41Speaker 1: I have Casius Howell kind of pegged to kind of
- 27:45Speaker 1: watch him early, mainly because I saw somebody who I
- 27:48Speaker 1: respect put him in a mock to the Bills like
- 27:50Speaker 1: a month ago, and I was like, oh, that's interesting. No,
- 27:54Speaker 1: but I'm I'm behind on prospect watching at this time
- 27:57Speaker 1: of year. I will be middle of February. I will
- 27:59Speaker 1: be grinding extremely hard. But no, I have not started
- 28:03Speaker 1: the edge grouping yet. But I'm gonna make a note
- 28:04Speaker 1: of Howell. I already had a note on Howland. I'm
- 28:06Speaker 1: gonna make it even more of one now because I
- 28:08Speaker 1: respect you and know how much you know. Jason. Another
- 28:13Speaker 1: super chat, Thank you. Jason says, what do you think
- 28:14Speaker 1: is the most important role that must be filled or
- 28:18Speaker 1: addressed in Leonard's scheme? Oh, sheesh, man, If he wants
- 28:26Speaker 1: to do what he did at Wisconsin, Uh, it's the linebackers.
- 28:34Speaker 1: If he wants to do more of what they did
- 28:38Speaker 1: in Denver. I think it's nose tackle and defensive end.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And I'm gonna talk about defensive end more in a
- 28:47Speaker 1: minute now. Very good question, Very good question. Yeah, So
- 28:50Speaker 1: that's nose tackle kind of Gage says, everything but strong
- 28:54Speaker 1: safety and corner. But yeah, so in a nutshell, that's
- 28:58Speaker 1: who Leonard is. That's what I want with this nose
- 29:01Speaker 1: tackle spot. I know this is a mix of a
- 29:03Speaker 1: segment talking about the positional archetype and nose and specific,
- 29:06Speaker 1: but also just kind of what Leonard is, who he is.
- 29:08Speaker 1: It's gonna be a lot of fun conversations going forward
- 29:10Speaker 1: with that. The next one that I want to talk
- 29:11Speaker 1: about kind of ties into John Franklin Myers, who was
- 29:15Speaker 1: mentioned earlier in a bit of Jason's question a minute ago.
- 29:18Speaker 1: The next positional archetype that I expect changes for and
- 29:21Speaker 1: I think the Bills need changes for is defensive end.
- 29:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna take another ship of my ginger ale. Everybody there, Oh,
- 29:31Speaker 1: I know there's no caffeine, but it makes me feel
- 29:32Speaker 1: so good. So defensive end in this defense, in Jim
- 29:39Speaker 1: Leonard's scheme system, all that type of deal, you are
- 29:43Speaker 1: looking for guys who can play in that four eye roll, right,
- 29:46Speaker 1: So guys who can play on the inside shoulder of
- 29:49Speaker 1: the tackles. But you're also going to be looking for
- 29:54Speaker 1: those guys to have, you know, versatility, to be able
- 29:58Speaker 1: to play like a three tech or a one tech
- 30:00Speaker 1: and a four down look. So these guys are gonna
- 30:02Speaker 1: have to have versatility. There are guys who can play
- 30:04Speaker 1: defensive end in a four eye in odd front looks right,
- 30:08Speaker 1: And that could be the type front where you just
- 30:09Speaker 1: have maybe three down or maybe four down technically, but
- 30:12Speaker 1: you're in a tight so you're you know, four I
- 30:14Speaker 1: inside shoulder the tackle, or it could be Denver Broncos
- 30:17Speaker 1: five down front type of deal, right. And every time
- 30:19Speaker 1: I think of the Denver Broncos you know defense, or
- 30:22Speaker 1: I put that out there for folks, I always want
- 30:23Speaker 1: everybody to envision what you got, right. So you've got
- 30:26Speaker 1: your bookends, right, are Jonathan Cooper on one side and
- 30:30Speaker 1: Nick Benito on the other. So Jonathan Cooper is your
- 30:34Speaker 1: bookend on we'll say for the defenses. Left, John Franklin
- 30:37Speaker 1: Myers is the four eye. Inside of him. DJ Jones
- 30:41Speaker 1: is the nose tackle sometimes kind of like a one
- 30:44Speaker 1: depending on how he aligns, but DJ Jones is that
- 30:47Speaker 1: stone in the center. So that's three guys of the five.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Then to the right of DJ Jones is Zach Allen,
- 30:54Speaker 1: who's aligned in more of a four eye, and then
- 30:56Speaker 1: outside Zach Allen is Nick Benito. Right, So if you're
- 30:59Speaker 1: thinking about the Bills defensive ends right now, right, and
- 31:01Speaker 1: the defensive ends are going to be more of those
- 31:03Speaker 1: four eye guys. So think again, the easiest way to
- 31:05Speaker 1: think about it, because I know not a lot of
- 31:06Speaker 1: people are like, oh yeah, I remember the Wisconsin defenses
- 31:09Speaker 1: from twenty seventeen to twenty twenty two. Think about the
- 31:12Speaker 1: Denver Broncos this past year, right, which I think enough
- 31:14Speaker 1: fan Bills fans have familiarity with in one way or another.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Think of Zach Allen and think of John Franklin Myers. Right,
- 31:22Speaker 1: guys that line up on the inside shoulder of the
- 31:25Speaker 1: tackles in odd front looks, and those same guys who
- 31:29Speaker 1: in the Broncos go four down, they can kick those
- 31:32Speaker 1: dudes inside to a three tech or a one tech. Okay,
- 31:35Speaker 1: So think of that. So think of Zach Allen and
- 31:36Speaker 1: John Franklin Myers and that positional flexibility and versatility, right
- 31:40Speaker 1: can line up inside shoulder of the tackles and a
- 31:42Speaker 1: four eye in odd front looks or kick inside as
- 31:46Speaker 1: more of a traditional defensive tackle from a Bills sense
- 31:48Speaker 1: in four down looks. Right, do the Bills have a
- 31:51Speaker 1: John Franklin Myers. Do the Bills have a Zach Allen.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I'm not talking about talent level. I'm talking about that
- 31:56Speaker 1: type of versatility and flexibility from an alignment standpoint and
- 31:59Speaker 1: place down standpoint kind of but also not really. This
- 32:03Speaker 1: is where I think a kind of big question comes
- 32:08Speaker 1: about for this defense. So my position archetypes that I
- 32:12Speaker 1: think the Bills need to go after. There's two for
- 32:15Speaker 1: me right now. They're both UFAs. I would love for
- 32:17Speaker 1: the Bills to sign one or both of them. One
- 32:19Speaker 1: is John Franklin Myers. The other is David Anyamada from
- 32:23Speaker 1: the Atlanta Falcons. He's somebody I liked with this time
- 32:25Speaker 1: in New Orleans. These are two guys who again can
- 32:28Speaker 1: line up at multiple spots along your front, on front
- 32:31Speaker 1: or even front, and Anyamada has even got some nice
- 32:34Speaker 1: reps at nose tackle, which is crazy because he's like
- 32:36Speaker 1: three hundred pounds. I think jfm's listed at like two
- 32:38Speaker 1: eighty eight, so Anyamada is a little heavier at three hundred.
- 32:41Speaker 1: But Anyamada is a type of dude who he's lining
- 32:45Speaker 1: up you know as like a three tech or a
- 32:46Speaker 1: one tech and four down looks he's lining up in
- 32:49Speaker 1: a four ie, he's sometimes lined up outside of that
- 32:51Speaker 1: a little bit. They're lining him up at nose. Atlanta
- 32:53Speaker 1: did some cool stuff with him, and he was effective
- 32:55Speaker 1: across the board. But the point with him is somebody
- 32:58Speaker 1: who warn multiple hats, line up at multiple spots on
- 33:02Speaker 1: your front, like Anya Mada is a type of guy who, Okay,
- 33:05Speaker 1: you can line up at nose and handle your own
- 33:07Speaker 1: against the run, but you can also penetrate and get
- 33:10Speaker 1: some pressure from that same spot and do all those
- 33:12Speaker 1: things across, you know, multiple other spots in an odd
- 33:15Speaker 1: or even front look on the defense. Cool similar thing
- 33:18Speaker 1: for JFM right, put him in a four eye in
- 33:21Speaker 1: the odd front looks, kick him inside to a three
- 33:24Speaker 1: tech or a one tech and your four down stuff. Right,
- 33:26Speaker 1: that's the type of defensive end that you need. I
- 33:30Speaker 1: think the Bills kind of have that right now. Like
- 33:33Speaker 1: you can do that a little bit with Greg Russo
- 33:37Speaker 1: and Rusul is an interesting one too, Like there's times
- 33:39Speaker 1: where when they would go with some odd front stuff
- 33:40Speaker 1: like he would kick inside to a four eye and
- 33:42Speaker 1: granted it was more adjustment based based on kind of
- 33:45Speaker 1: like a motion or a personnel or kind of what
- 33:47Speaker 1: was happening offensively, but you know, Group can kick him
- 33:50Speaker 1: there a little bit, although I do think majority of
- 33:52Speaker 1: the time Group is going to be one of your
- 33:53Speaker 1: stand up bookends A la uh. You know, Jonathan Cooper
- 33:57Speaker 1: and Nick Bonito, and then you look at Michael Hoyt.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I think he's gonna be another bookend a la Nick
- 34:02Speaker 1: Bonito and Jonathan Cooper. But Hoyt's another dude who you
- 34:05Speaker 1: could kick him inside into a four eye. You could
- 34:08Speaker 1: on passing downs, like you could line him head up
- 34:10Speaker 1: over the center, put him in a two point stance
- 34:12Speaker 1: kind of. Everything that you were going to do with
- 34:13Speaker 1: Michael Hoyt in mcdermot's defense, you can do in Jim
- 34:17Speaker 1: Leonard's and then some because it naturally it's it's more
- 34:20Speaker 1: seamless because of what Hoyt was with the Rams in
- 34:23Speaker 1: their odd front structure and what he can be with
- 34:25Speaker 1: Jim Leonard in his odd front structure. So I think
- 34:28Speaker 1: that's a very seamless thing for him. But you got
- 34:30Speaker 1: your bookends there with Oliver and Rousseau, more with Hoyt
- 34:35Speaker 1: and Rousseau. More often than not when you kick inside
- 34:37Speaker 1: to the defensive ends Gauge, I see your comment where
- 34:41Speaker 1: you say, like our Oliver and Hoyight the same player
- 34:43Speaker 1: in this kind of defense. I want to bring it
- 34:45Speaker 1: up because I think that's like a fun question because
- 34:48Speaker 1: kind of like I think, more often than not, from
- 34:51Speaker 1: a base standpoint, Michael Hoyt would be one of your
- 34:54Speaker 1: bookends and Ed Oliver would be a four eye. But
- 35:00Speaker 1: in known passing down in distances or situations, you could
- 35:03Speaker 1: get a little fun like I like the idea of
- 35:05Speaker 1: putting Ed Oliver as one of the bookends, one of
- 35:08Speaker 1: those outside edge players, putting ed Oliver in a two
- 35:10Speaker 1: point stance and letting ed Oliver hunt, or putting Ed
- 35:12Speaker 1: Oliver in a two point head up on the center
- 35:15Speaker 1: and letting him do some kind of stuff. From that regard,
- 35:18Speaker 1: or in that regard, I should say, so, I don't
- 35:20Speaker 1: think they're the same kind of player, but I think
- 35:23Speaker 1: you can align them similarly and give them similar responsibilities
- 35:30Speaker 1: while still using them differently. If that makes sense. That's
- 35:34Speaker 1: a really good thought. I like that. I think that's cool.
- 35:37Speaker 1: But again that ties into again that defensive end conversation,
- 35:40Speaker 1: because say you were building out the bills front, say
- 35:44Speaker 1: you were going again, let's talk that Bronco structure, right
- 35:47Speaker 1: Cooper JFM DJ Jones, Zach Allen, Nick Benito, Right, if
- 35:52Speaker 1: you're doing that for the Bills right now, with who
- 35:54Speaker 1: they have on the roster, Let's pretend Michael Hoyt is healthy,
- 35:58Speaker 1: it's Greg Russo at Oliver Dion Walker, TJ. Sanders or
- 36:07Speaker 1: Landon Jackson. Michael Hoyt that defensive end spot of TJ.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Sanders or land In Jackson. I don't love that that
- 36:18Speaker 1: ties into this position archetype as well. I don't know
- 36:21Speaker 1: how much of a fit t J. Sanders is going
- 36:23Speaker 1: to be in this defense aside from like the sub
- 36:25Speaker 1: package four down type of stuff. I'm interested to see
- 36:29Speaker 1: kind of what weight they play him at or what
- 36:31Speaker 1: they have him get to. Again, he's not going to
- 36:34Speaker 1: be a nose like he just doesn't have He doesn't
- 36:37Speaker 1: have the play style of the skill set to be
- 36:39Speaker 1: a nose. It's just not gonna happen. I mean, Walker
- 36:41Speaker 1: does a little bit, but even Walker, it's tougher for
- 36:44Speaker 1: him because of his place style because he's a finesse guy.
- 36:46Speaker 1: He just happens to be a finesse guy in the
- 36:47Speaker 1: body of a mountain. Sanders is not going to be
- 36:50Speaker 1: a nose or he could be put I wouldn't want
- 36:53Speaker 1: him at nose, I should say so. The only other
- 36:55Speaker 1: spot is for him to be, you know, one of
- 36:58Speaker 1: the four eyes or one of those defensive ends who
- 37:01Speaker 1: can also kick inside on the interior three tech or
- 37:03Speaker 1: one tech and sub packet situations. Right, But again, I
- 37:06Speaker 1: don't love that, and I think his season last year
- 37:10Speaker 1: was unfortunate. You know, he got banged up. Other guys
- 37:12Speaker 1: got banged up. He's playing like traditional defensive end in
- 37:16Speaker 1: even front structures and it kind of I think set
- 37:19Speaker 1: his development back a little bit. He was having to
- 37:21Speaker 1: wear a hat that he wasn't prepared to wear, and
- 37:25Speaker 1: he struggled at times, had some positive flashes at times,
- 37:29Speaker 1: but overall, I think, you know, an underwhelming rookie season.
- 37:32Speaker 1: I don't think that means they should be out on
- 37:35Speaker 1: him or he's done. But I cover T J. Sanders
- 37:39Speaker 1: offensive guard. He'd be a light guard though, like two
- 37:41Speaker 1: hundred ninety five pounds or three hundred pounds. Yeah, Sanders
- 37:45Speaker 1: is a questionable fit, and I wasn't too high on
- 37:50Speaker 1: Land and Jackson as a prospect. I just don't like
- 37:52Speaker 1: dudes who don't have a lot of bend and are rigid,
- 37:54Speaker 1: and he doesn't have a lot of bend and he's rigid.
- 37:57Speaker 1: But you know, he could work out well maybe at
- 38:00Speaker 1: a four eye, especially if they play him a little
- 38:02Speaker 1: heavier like they did in his early days in Arkansas.
- 38:07Speaker 1: I don't think he's got the right build and play
- 38:11Speaker 1: style to be a stand up guy off the edge.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Could happen a little bit, maybe if he lightens a bit,
- 38:16Speaker 1: but I just don't think that pure compression style of
- 38:20Speaker 1: rusher is going to be ideal coming off the edge.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I think you need a little more athleticism, you need
- 38:25Speaker 1: a little more juice, a little more bend to be,
- 38:28Speaker 1: you know, one of those bookend edge rushers in an
- 38:30Speaker 1: odd front and not saying it's out of the realm
- 38:34Speaker 1: of possibility, but I think it's for me. Like, if
- 38:37Speaker 1: I had to, I'd ask Landon to, you know, get
- 38:39Speaker 1: a little heavier like he did in Arkansas. Let's put
- 38:41Speaker 1: you in a four eye again. He's a run defense
- 38:43Speaker 1: type of guy. He uses his hands, he uses his length,
- 38:45Speaker 1: he's physical. Let's play you in a four eye and
- 38:48Speaker 1: kind of go from there. But even then, it's still like,
- 38:51Speaker 1: how much versatility do you have with land and Jackson
- 38:53Speaker 1: and TJ. Sanders, what's the ceiling. What's the floor for
- 38:56Speaker 1: each of those guys. I think both of them are
- 38:58Speaker 1: more unknown quantity than they are known. So for me,
- 39:03Speaker 1: you know, kind of going to Jason's common earlier or question,
- 39:06Speaker 1: you know, what do you think is the most important
- 39:07Speaker 1: role that must be filled or addressed in Leonard's scheme.
- 39:11Speaker 1: One of the ones I mentioned was you know that
- 39:16Speaker 1: defensive end spot because I think it's questionable right now.
- 39:19Speaker 1: I think Ed'll be fine. Ed'll be fine is a
- 39:21Speaker 1: four eye who can do a bunch of stuff in
- 39:23Speaker 1: sub packages. I don't know how I feel about Sanders, well,
- 39:27Speaker 1: I do. I don't feel great about Sanders as a
- 39:29Speaker 1: four eye, and I don't feel great about Land and
- 39:31Speaker 1: Jackson as the four eye? Could each of them do it? Sure?
- 39:34Speaker 1: Could each of them work out there? Sure? Do I
- 39:37Speaker 1: want to hang my hat on that for this season?
- 39:40Speaker 1: I do not. So I think this is one where
- 39:44Speaker 1: I would like a little bit of a splash you
- 39:45Speaker 1: know here. Again, it's not gonna be huge or crazy
- 39:48Speaker 1: from a monetary perspective, it might be more than they
- 39:50Speaker 1: can affordable. See, but give me JFM, give me David Anyamata,
- 39:54Speaker 1: two guys who can each rock at a four eye
- 39:57Speaker 1: on you. Monic could even kick in the nose a
- 39:59Speaker 1: little bit from time to time and odd front looks,
- 40:01Speaker 1: and then both those dudes can also kick inside on
- 40:03Speaker 1: four down fronts and Russia as a one tech or
- 40:06Speaker 1: a three tech and still play the run and give
- 40:08Speaker 1: you some pop as a pass rusher as well. Penetration, physicality,
- 40:13Speaker 1: block recognition in those dudes. Veteran presence on your MADA
- 40:16Speaker 1: is a little bit older. He's thirty two right now.
- 40:18Speaker 1: I think he'll be thirty three when the season starts.
- 40:21Speaker 1: But both of those guys or that type of that
- 40:24Speaker 1: type of play style, that type of body type, right
- 40:27Speaker 1: this is this is this is what this episode is.
- 40:29Speaker 1: It's you've give them some specific players that could work,
- 40:31Speaker 1: but also kind of get you thinking of, Okay, that's
- 40:34Speaker 1: what that's what that play style should be, or that's
- 40:36Speaker 1: what that skill set should look like, or that's what
- 40:38Speaker 1: that body type should look like. So JFM, David Anyamata,
- 40:41Speaker 1: both of those guys are what I would look like
- 40:43Speaker 1: or what I look for at defensive end in terms
- 40:47Speaker 1: of the archetype or in terms of them specifically. And
- 40:49Speaker 1: if you're thinking about that right now, the bills don't
- 40:51Speaker 1: have that on them on their roster. They do not
- 40:53Speaker 1: have a JFM on this roster. They do not have
- 40:58Speaker 1: a David on Yourma in this roster. They do not
- 41:01Speaker 1: have a Zach Allen on this roster. Like they don't
- 41:04Speaker 1: have those type of guys, Derek says, does Solomon factor
- 41:09Speaker 1: in any of this? He's gonna have to be one
- 41:10Speaker 1: of your book ends on the outside, pure juice, pure athleticism,
- 41:14Speaker 1: with some bend and some moves. Maybe you kick him
- 41:17Speaker 1: inside and do some stuff as a sub package guy,
- 41:19Speaker 1: but he's really more. I mean, in an ideal world,
- 41:23Speaker 1: you get him really souped up and juiced up off
- 41:25Speaker 1: the edge and you let him try to be like
- 41:27Speaker 1: a Nick Bonito type of deal. So maybe he could work,
- 41:29Speaker 1: but he's factor and more on the outside. He doesn't
- 41:32Speaker 1: have you know, he doesn't have the weight on me
- 41:35Speaker 1: to click off of that. I don't think he has
- 41:37Speaker 1: the kind of you know, weight in his shorts to
- 41:38Speaker 1: play a four eye or kicking side more. You know,
- 41:41Speaker 1: so he can be a sub package rusher or play
- 41:43Speaker 1: outside a little bit if they go five down in
- 41:47Speaker 1: odd front type of stuff. Or again he's got some athleticism,
- 41:50Speaker 1: you know, you could go with a tight front, so
- 41:52Speaker 1: three you know, three down on the interior, the four
- 41:54Speaker 1: eye zero and a four eye and have him be
- 41:57Speaker 1: kind of the fourth down guy on the line of image.
- 42:00Speaker 1: You could have him dropping coverage a little bit. So
- 42:02Speaker 1: I think he has some usefulness. I just haven't seen
- 42:06Speaker 1: him produce a lot or be used a lot at
- 42:08Speaker 1: all to this point, so kind of counting on him
- 42:10Speaker 1: to be something. I think it's the question mark across
- 42:13Speaker 1: the board. You know, maybe it's on him, maybe it's
- 42:15Speaker 1: because of the defense he was in previously, But I
- 42:17Speaker 1: think he's more of a guy who's going to be
- 42:19Speaker 1: a bookend kind of factoring into a true like edge
- 42:22Speaker 1: outside type of presence. Come in here a question. Here
- 42:29Speaker 1: are our pass rushers, defensive end or linebacker going to
- 42:32Speaker 1: benefit from the scheme in terms of QB hunting versus
- 42:35Speaker 1: setting an edge or staying in a link. Yes, Jim
- 42:39Speaker 1: Leonard is going to bring simulated pressures, creeper pressures games
- 42:43Speaker 1: with the four down front, true blitzes where the paths
- 42:46Speaker 1: are designed to attack the quarterback, where you still have
- 42:49Speaker 1: some contain right where you're not just going crazy, but
- 42:53Speaker 1: you're attacking the quarterback getting him off the spot while
- 42:56Speaker 1: still having some integrity on top of it. So yeah,
- 42:58Speaker 1: I think it's I think it's I think it's going
- 43:00Speaker 1: to be a good combination of integrity and like contain
- 43:04Speaker 1: pressures or cops mix was still getting him off the
- 43:08Speaker 1: spot and attacking the quarterback. Question here, Oh yeah, what
- 43:14Speaker 1: would t J. Sanders place in this defense be if
- 43:17Speaker 1: not a four eye? That's a great question. I don't
- 43:21Speaker 1: think he has one. Again, he's he's not lining up
- 43:24Speaker 1: as a bookend. He's not going to be a Bonito
- 43:26Speaker 1: or Jonathan Cooper, and he's not going to be a
- 43:28Speaker 1: nose you right, He's not a DJ Jones. So you
- 43:31Speaker 1: have to hope he can play four I and if
- 43:33Speaker 1: he can't play four I, it gonna be a problem.
- 43:37Speaker 1: And as Drew says, yeah, Walker is a four eye.
- 43:39Speaker 1: I do think Walker could be a four eye, which
- 43:41Speaker 1: is again is part of why or you could work
- 43:44Speaker 1: him there a bit, which is part of why. I
- 43:47Speaker 1: want a true nose tackle, Like, give me a true
- 43:49Speaker 1: nose so I can line up Walker at four I.
- 43:52Speaker 1: I could even line him up as one of the
- 43:53Speaker 1: bookends as a five US Walker in the four down looks.
- 43:58Speaker 1: I again, I think Walker can moonlight as a true
- 44:02Speaker 1: nose or work there. I don't think it's the best
- 44:05Speaker 1: use of his skill set, and I don't think it's
- 44:07Speaker 1: the best way to kind of stop the run, especially
- 44:10Speaker 1: if you're getting downhill stuff for gap scheme stuff. Again,
- 44:13Speaker 1: I don't think he's terrible there, but I don't think
- 44:16Speaker 1: it's the best use of his skill set or his
- 44:18Speaker 1: play style. And getting yourself a true nose, you know,
- 44:21Speaker 1: allows Walker to play as a four eye or just
- 44:23Speaker 1: rotat into different spots and looks. So yeah, one thousand percent,
- 44:26Speaker 1: very fair, very fair, very fair, very fair. Tony says,
- 44:30Speaker 1: what linebackers do you think fit this scheme? Linebackers can
- 44:33Speaker 1: be the next one that we're going to get into.
- 44:34Speaker 1: So you are seeing into my notes like so many
- 44:36Speaker 1: of you others have done. So Yeah, defensive end. I
- 44:39Speaker 1: think this one's important. And again, the key with the
- 44:43Speaker 1: defensive ends are they need alignment versatility. Right, It's got
- 44:49Speaker 1: to be somebody who can play a four eye in
- 44:52Speaker 1: these odd front structures, but who can also kick inside
- 44:55Speaker 1: to a one or a three tech in four down structures, right,
- 44:59Speaker 1: David anyamdel so as the bonus of you know, he
- 45:01Speaker 1: can line up at nose from time to time and
- 45:03Speaker 1: hold his own, which is pretty cool. I Thinkain like
- 45:04Speaker 1: forty five snaps and nose last year, and for a
- 45:06Speaker 1: three hundred pound dude doing that in odd front structures
- 45:09Speaker 1: and the way he handled double teams and played the
- 45:12Speaker 1: run and played the pass, it was very impressive. I
- 45:15Speaker 1: really really really like David Onyamada. And those are the
- 45:18Speaker 1: two types of guys again, So the key for that
- 45:20Speaker 1: is alignment. Versatility can be a four eye in the
- 45:23Speaker 1: odd front structures, kick inside to a one or a
- 45:26Speaker 1: three tech and the four down stuff or even front
- 45:28Speaker 1: stuff and then having again playstyle body type type of
- 45:34Speaker 1: idea John Franklin Myers, David on your Mada, that type
- 45:36Speaker 1: of mold or idea there when you're looking at defensive
- 45:41Speaker 1: end for what they need in the system and in
- 45:43Speaker 1: this scheme, because again you're gonna get odd front stuff.
- 45:45Speaker 1: You are still going to get four down even front
- 45:47Speaker 1: stuff that you saw with Sean McDermott. You are going
- 45:49Speaker 1: to get that right. You're gonna get some gap and
- 45:52Speaker 1: a half, maybe even some two gapping too. You're gonna
- 45:54Speaker 1: get some gap and a half, some two gapping and
- 45:56Speaker 1: some one gap penetrating type of stuff that you got
- 45:58Speaker 1: in a McDermott. Right, you are going to get a
- 46:01Speaker 1: variety of these with Jim Leonard because he is multiple,
- 46:04Speaker 1: because he is a hybrid type of guy. So you
- 46:07Speaker 1: need players that reflect that multiplicity, that reflect that hybrid
- 46:12Speaker 1: idea or that hybrid nature. You need players that are dynamic, versatile, hybrid,
- 46:17Speaker 1: or any type of synonyms and verbs for that stuff.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Next one, since everybody's been asking about it, position, archetypes
- 46:24Speaker 1: or linebacker, Give me a second. I'm gonna take another
- 46:26Speaker 1: sip of ginger ale because my headache is coming back. Okay,
- 46:33Speaker 1: back too, man. The gingdrell hits every time. Linebacker. Linebacker
- 46:41Speaker 1: is tricky because if you especially if you go back
- 46:46Speaker 1: to his time at Wisconsin, Jim Leonards, that is, dynamic
- 46:50Speaker 1: and or hybrid linebackers were very important to what he
- 46:55Speaker 1: did at Wisconsin. Having multiple guys that could effectively rush
- 47:00Speaker 1: or effectively drop into coverage at any point mattered a
- 47:04Speaker 1: lot and matters in today's NFL. Right again, tying into
- 47:07Speaker 1: what we kind of finished within the last segment, that
- 47:10Speaker 1: increases your multiplicity and the possibilities that an offense has
- 47:13Speaker 1: to account for. Right, Okay, is this guy rushing is
- 47:16Speaker 1: this guy dropping? And it? Can he do either of
- 47:19Speaker 1: those things and still be effective, right, because you can
- 47:21Speaker 1: have a guy lined up on the edge and be like, oh,
- 47:24Speaker 1: is he gonna drop or is he gonna rush? Well,
- 47:27Speaker 1: if you rushes, we don't care, right, Like I think
- 47:29Speaker 1: Dorrian Williams is a good example. Dorrian Williams I think
- 47:31Speaker 1: is a really interesting fit in this defense because of
- 47:34Speaker 1: his length and his physicality and his play coming forward, right.
- 47:38Speaker 1: You know, he has the ability to kind of deconstruct
- 47:40Speaker 1: some blocks a bit. He's physical, he's an impactful tackler, right,
- 47:45Speaker 1: But it's like, okay, he asked some questions in coverage,
- 47:49Speaker 1: so you know you could put him as one of
- 47:50Speaker 1: the inside linebackers. Let him just kind of play downhill,
- 47:53Speaker 1: plug the a gap and be a headhunter, right, Sea ball,
- 47:56Speaker 1: get ball type of deal. Play to your physicality, lady
- 48:00Speaker 1: or juice, play to your length, all that kind of stuff. Right,
- 48:02Speaker 1: But you'll have some questions in coverage for him. You
- 48:05Speaker 1: could line him up on the edge, which they did
- 48:08Speaker 1: at times when they would go they would use him
- 48:09Speaker 1: as like a true sam and line them up against
- 48:12Speaker 1: teams that went heavy or used like a heavier surface
- 48:17Speaker 1: from an offensive standpoint, and they'd line him up as
- 48:20Speaker 1: a SAM and let him play on the edge. He
- 48:22Speaker 1: can do that from a run defense standpoint, But you're
- 48:26Speaker 1: not worried about Dorian Williams beating one of your tackles
- 48:28Speaker 1: one on one in a pass or situation. Right, So,
- 48:31Speaker 1: Dorrian Williams is kind of wonky, like, okay, could he
- 48:33Speaker 1: kind of play as one of those inside linebackers and
- 48:35Speaker 1: the odd front stuff? Is he more of a sub
- 48:37Speaker 1: package type of player? Where are you playing him as
- 48:40Speaker 1: a sub package guy? Because he's not a true threat
- 48:42Speaker 1: as a rusher off the edge. So are you still
- 48:44Speaker 1: playing him off ball? You know, what does that look like?
- 48:47Speaker 1: Is he a starter? Is he a depth guy? Is
- 48:49Speaker 1: he a linebacker? Three? Is he a linebacker two? You know,
- 48:53Speaker 1: starting alongside Bernard or whoever? Well, it's probably gonna be
- 48:56Speaker 1: Bernard at this point. Linebacker again is interesting because of
- 49:02Speaker 1: what Leonard used at Wisconsin. You know, the Denver linebackers
- 49:06Speaker 1: a little more straightforward, right. You got Alex Singleton, you
- 49:08Speaker 1: got Stirnad, and then you got Drake green Law who
- 49:10Speaker 1: played this past year. Those guys aren't completely hybridized or
- 49:15Speaker 1: dynamic like the Wisconsin linebackers were right again the line
- 49:18Speaker 1: like the Wisconsin ones that Leonard wielded. Again, it's Van Ginkle,
- 49:23Speaker 1: it's Zach Bond, it's and even Zach Bond played more
- 49:26Speaker 1: on the edge at Wisconsin than he did like off
- 49:28Speaker 1: ball like he's doing now for Philly. But it was
- 49:31Speaker 1: Van Ginkle and bonn in Chanl and her Big again,
- 49:34Speaker 1: her Big was more on the edge, but he would
- 49:35Speaker 1: drop every once in a while and wasn't like an
- 49:37Speaker 1: off ball guy. Like it's it's this type of versatility
- 49:41Speaker 1: that you need in the linebackers, right, Like, do you
- 49:43Speaker 1: have somebody who can line up, you know, on the
- 49:46Speaker 1: interior or as an inside linebacker. Do you have somebody
- 49:49Speaker 1: who can play downhill and kind of plug the A
- 49:50Speaker 1: gap or you know, meet an offensive lineman, deconstruct the block,
- 49:53Speaker 1: shoot a gap, any of that type of stuff in
- 49:55Speaker 1: between the tackles, Right, do you have somebody who can
- 49:57Speaker 1: play from the A gap to the C gap type
- 50:01Speaker 1: of deal? Right? And can that same guy also line
- 50:04Speaker 1: up on the edge and beat somebody one on one,
- 50:07Speaker 1: you know, beat a tackle one on one from a
- 50:08Speaker 1: pass rous standpoint, whether it's with hands or you know,
- 50:11Speaker 1: winn in a half man relationship or going speed to
- 50:13Speaker 1: power and going through a guy, all these type of stuff,
- 50:16Speaker 1: right it is, it's a question mark linebacker. This is
- 50:21Speaker 1: low hanging fruit. And I know a lot of people
- 50:23Speaker 1: have kind of talked about it a bunch already. But
- 50:25Speaker 1: this guy that I'm about to say is the idealistic
- 50:28Speaker 1: like addition that they need to make it. Linebacker. He
- 50:30Speaker 1: played at Wisconsin underneath Jim Leonard. It's Leo Chanal, somebody
- 50:36Speaker 1: who again, he can plug the a gap, he can
- 50:38Speaker 1: rush off the edge, he can drop into coverage. He
- 50:42Speaker 1: specifically would be phenomenal. But also that is the type
- 50:45Speaker 1: of kind of play style or skill set or skill
- 50:48Speaker 1: sets you're looking for. Someone who can wear multiple hats
- 50:51Speaker 1: and wear them at above average levels. Doesn't have to
- 50:54Speaker 1: be a unicorn. It just has to be a guy
- 50:56Speaker 1: that is effective in multiple ways. And if you had
- 50:59Speaker 1: to boil it to a couple, it's mainly like somebody
- 51:01Speaker 1: who can rush and play coverage if you're looking at
- 51:03Speaker 1: outside linebacker, and then if you're looking at inside linebacker,
- 51:06Speaker 1: someone who can play coverage and be downhill. Chanall is
- 51:10Speaker 1: the ideal guy or the poster child for this because
- 51:13Speaker 1: he literally can do all those things, like he can rush,
- 51:16Speaker 1: and he can play coverage, and he can play downhill
- 51:19Speaker 1: like he can do all of those things. He's been
- 51:22Speaker 1: so fun in Steve Spagnolo's defense for years. Tie in
- 51:29Speaker 1: again to the multiplicity, like Spags would use him and
- 51:32Speaker 1: put him like head up over the center, he'd put
- 51:33Speaker 1: him in the a gap, he'd line them off ball,
- 51:35Speaker 1: he'd line them up outside. It was just like man like,
- 51:38Speaker 1: where's he coming from? What's he gonna do? Those are
- 51:41Speaker 1: the type of guys you need because again with the
- 51:43Speaker 1: simulated pressures and creeper pressures that Jim Lennon wants to
- 51:47Speaker 1: run again, for those of you who don't know what
- 51:48Speaker 1: that is, simulated pressure is you're still rushing four, but
- 51:52Speaker 1: you are one of those four rushers is a non
- 51:54Speaker 1: traditional rusher and you are dropping a traditional rusher into coverage.
- 51:58Speaker 1: So a simulated pressure easiest way to think of it,
- 52:01Speaker 1: you're showing blitz. Right. Say you've got five guys showing
- 52:04Speaker 1: on the line, and if you're a Bills fan, I'll
- 52:06Speaker 1: put into this perspective for you. You know you're showing five
- 52:09Speaker 1: at the line and on the snap, Matt Mlano rushes
- 52:13Speaker 1: at Oliver rushes, Dion Walker rushes, and TJ. Sanders rushes.
- 52:20Speaker 1: That's four and then you drop Greg Russo into coverage. Right,
- 52:23Speaker 1: So you're bringing Milano and dropping Groot into coverage. So
- 52:27Speaker 1: you're bringing a non traditional rusher and dropping into coverage
- 52:30Speaker 1: a traditional rusher. Creeper pressure is the exact same thing,
- 52:34Speaker 1: except you're not showing pressure pre snap, so it just
- 52:36Speaker 1: be a four down front. Say it's Groot, ed Walker
- 52:40Speaker 1: and aj Apanessa and off ball, You've got Matt Milano
- 52:44Speaker 1: and Terrell Bernard, and it just looks like, okay, we
- 52:46Speaker 1: have a four down front and Milano and Bernard are
- 52:48Speaker 1: gonna play off ball, and then on the snap, Milano
- 52:52Speaker 1: rushes and group drops back again. The idea with these
- 52:55Speaker 1: sims and creepers is you can use them to attack protections.
- 52:58Speaker 1: You can get them and use them to manipulate how
- 53:03Speaker 1: many guys stay in the block by making a defense
- 53:05Speaker 1: think more is coming than they need to. You can
- 53:07Speaker 1: if you know a team's protection rules, you can get
- 53:09Speaker 1: a free rusher off of it. Jim Leonard is really
- 53:12Speaker 1: great at using sims and creepers to attack formations and
- 53:17Speaker 1: attack alignments from offenses. Right like open side, so the
- 53:20Speaker 1: field side, the boundary side where the running back is
- 53:25Speaker 1: or where the running back isn't the tight end side,
- 53:27Speaker 1: you know, closed open, all this kind of stuff. He's
- 53:32Speaker 1: very adept at using sims and creepers to attack an
- 53:36Speaker 1: offense based on how they come out of the huddle
- 53:39Speaker 1: or the personnel grouping that they're in, or their tendencies right,
- 53:43Speaker 1: and to be able to do that effectively. The more
- 53:45Speaker 1: versatile body types you have, the more hybridized guys you have,
- 53:49Speaker 1: the more dynamic guys that you have across the entire board,
- 53:54Speaker 1: helps tremendously. But linebacker is a big one because of
- 53:57Speaker 1: the hats that those linebackers wore for Jim le while
- 54:00Speaker 1: at Wisconsin, because of their versatility, because of how dynamic
- 54:04Speaker 1: they were as players, as rush players, coverage players, and
- 54:07Speaker 1: as run fitters. So linebackers really interesting. Oh, Charles with
- 54:12Speaker 1: the good one here saying Kayden Ellis and Quay Walker
- 54:15Speaker 1: would be other possibilities, but Shannal is option number one. Yeah.
- 54:18Speaker 1: My joke that I keep making, I said it on
- 54:19Speaker 1: gr this morning is you know, essentially like your linebackers,
- 54:24Speaker 1: you know you're looking for like you know, again, it
- 54:27Speaker 1: can vary versus the outside guy versus the inside guys.
- 54:30Speaker 1: But you're looking something for somebody who played at Wisconsin
- 54:33Speaker 1: under Jim Leonard, or you're looking for one of the
- 54:34Speaker 1: Georgia linebackers, right, like, get yourself. Yeah, so Quay Walker
- 54:38Speaker 1: is right up there. Good call. Size, athleticism, play downhill,
- 54:43Speaker 1: play some coverage. Not gonna be dude who's gonna win
- 54:45Speaker 1: you one on one stuff on the outside, but somebody
- 54:47Speaker 1: who can thump and play downhill but still play some
- 54:50Speaker 1: coverage at the same time and have some athleticism to them.
- 54:53Speaker 1: And yeah, Cayden Ellis kind of fits into that boat
- 54:55Speaker 1: as well. Maybe a little more rush opportunity potentially there.
- 54:58Speaker 1: So yeah, I like where your heads at t I
- 55:00Speaker 1: was a good call. Chromatic Wanders saying this is a
- 55:02Speaker 1: good call in this comment here saying this is a
- 55:04Speaker 1: deep year for off ball linebackers in the draft. A
- 55:07Speaker 1: lot of options there. Yes, there is a reason who
- 55:11Speaker 1: who keeps I think it's a C. J. Allen, the
- 55:13Speaker 1: linebacker from Georgia who keeps getting mocked to the Bills
- 55:16Speaker 1: in the first round of drafts. I really like him
- 55:19Speaker 1: coming forward and he's a leader, play caller, adjuster at Georgia.
- 55:23Speaker 1: I don't. I haven't watched his tape. This is just
- 55:25Speaker 1: for me watching broadcasts and broadcast as a lie. So
- 55:27Speaker 1: take this with a grain of salt. But I don't
- 55:30Speaker 1: love CJ. Allen as a coverage guy right now, but
- 55:33Speaker 1: I think he can function as an inside linebacker in
- 55:35Speaker 1: a three four. And again he comes from you know,
- 55:38Speaker 1: the tight front in in Jim Leonard's world is very
- 55:42Speaker 1: similar to you know that tight or that mint front
- 55:44Speaker 1: that Georgia uses. So if you get yourself some backers
- 55:49Speaker 1: that have played at Wisconsin under Leonard or come from
- 55:52Speaker 1: Georgia and play in that mint front, then that'll translate, right,
- 55:56Speaker 1: Guys that have you know, the Nolan Smiths of the world,
- 56:00Speaker 1: Walkers of the world, c J. Allen, You know these
- 56:02Speaker 1: type of guys who can kind of bang and wear
- 56:05Speaker 1: those hats and wear those roles because you've seen them
- 56:08Speaker 1: do it on tape at a high level. I want
- 56:13Speaker 1: to go to this comment, remember how you guys want
- 56:15Speaker 1: to chase on? How nice would that signing me? Right now?
- 56:17Speaker 1: I don't think I was one of the I wasn't
- 56:18Speaker 1: on the chase On train, so somebody else may have
- 56:22Speaker 1: done that. But I don't think it was me. I
- 56:23Speaker 1: could be wrong. I do have a big headache and
- 56:26Speaker 1: it may be muddying my head. Here another one for
- 56:31Speaker 1: chromatic wander. Yeah, I want to circle back to this
- 56:33Speaker 1: about Dorian him saying wouldn't Dorian fit better as an
- 56:35Speaker 1: off ball thumper in this defense? I don't know if
- 56:38Speaker 1: he has it mentally to call the defense though, so yes,
- 56:41Speaker 1: he would fit better as an off ball thumper. But
- 56:43Speaker 1: the issue is still gonna be from a coverage standpoint,
- 56:45Speaker 1: And granted you know both him and Bernard whoever the
- 56:48Speaker 1: two inside linebackers are in the odd front structures that
- 56:53Speaker 1: they run, they're gonna send them like they're gonna be
- 56:56Speaker 1: blitzing them. And it depends too. If it's three down
- 56:59Speaker 1: and like, if it's true more of like a three
- 57:00Speaker 1: to four, they're gonna be blitzing those guys they're gonna
- 57:03Speaker 1: send them. If it's more of a five down and
- 57:05Speaker 1: more of like a five to two four type of alignment,
- 57:09Speaker 1: then it's kind of playing more to what they've done
- 57:12Speaker 1: already a little bit. But I just don't holistically trust
- 57:15Speaker 1: Dorrian Williams in coverage in any way right now, whether
- 57:18Speaker 1: he even if the exact if the defense stayed the
- 57:20Speaker 1: same with mcderbin and Babbage, right even if it was
- 57:23Speaker 1: the exact same thing and it was like, oh, you know,
- 57:25Speaker 1: Mlonald's gone this year, it's gonna be Dorrian and Bernard
- 57:28Speaker 1: at the linebacker spots. I don't trust Dorian right now
- 57:32Speaker 1: from a coverage standpoint. I do trust him coming forward again,
- 57:35Speaker 1: like you said, it's like an off ball thumper. So
- 57:36Speaker 1: let him come downhill, plug a gap, you know, meet
- 57:40Speaker 1: beet a running back in the a gap, beat a
- 57:42Speaker 1: full back, tight end, a polar or whatever. I trust
- 57:45Speaker 1: him there. I trust him to send an edge from
- 57:47Speaker 1: a run defense standpoint, but I don't trust him in coverage.
- 57:51Speaker 1: And he's not a one on one pass rush threat
- 57:55Speaker 1: off the edge, so his versatility is limited and the
- 58:00Speaker 1: dynamic that he brings is limited in Leonard's defense. But honestly, overall,
- 58:05Speaker 1: he's very much a seat ball, get ball, you know,
- 58:08Speaker 1: go be a red shell in Mario Kart type of deal.
- 58:11Speaker 1: And I don't mean that negatively. I want to grab
- 58:14Speaker 1: this one from two from Drew who said, didn't Bernard
- 58:16Speaker 1: blitz a lot at Baylor? Does that translate to this scheme? Yes?
- 58:19Speaker 1: So Bernard was a very good blitzer coming out of Baylor.
- 58:21Speaker 1: It was probably my favorite thing about him. Just would
- 58:24Speaker 1: absolutely detonate on guys coming forward who picked him up,
- 58:27Speaker 1: whether it was an offensive lineman or running back or
- 58:28Speaker 1: tight end or whatever. It was also effective getting the quarterback.
- 58:33Speaker 1: I do think that will translate to this scheme. I
- 58:37Speaker 1: think you will see more movement in this defense, you know,
- 58:40Speaker 1: in sims, in creepers, run blitzes, blitzes in general, just
- 58:46Speaker 1: overall more movement. I think it will be beneficial to Bernard.
- 58:49Speaker 1: Torel Bernard's okay, sorry for all the movement. My head
- 58:51Speaker 1: aches coming back, so I'm trying to lessen it, help
- 58:54Speaker 1: myself out a little bit here. So sorry if I
- 58:55Speaker 1: look crazy on the YouTube stream right now. But Torel
- 59:00Speaker 1: Bernard's whole thing block deconstruction is always going to be
- 59:03Speaker 1: an issue for him. Right He's a smaller type of linebacker.
- 59:06Speaker 1: He's like two hundred and twenty pounds two hundred and
- 59:08Speaker 1: twenty three, soaken Wet doesn't have long arms, not a
- 59:11Speaker 1: big build, not a big frame. I think he's one
- 59:13Speaker 1: of those guys who tested well from a RASP perspective,
- 59:15Speaker 1: but I don't think he's an overall like stud of
- 59:17Speaker 1: an athlete. He wins by beating blockers to a spot.
- 59:21Speaker 1: He wins by processing and then winning with foot speed
- 59:24Speaker 1: and angles and getting to a spot right. If at
- 59:28Speaker 1: offensive lineman gets attached to him, he's done. And we
- 59:30Speaker 1: saw that a bunch in twenty twenty five because he
- 59:33Speaker 1: was injured coming out of camp. He was playing with
- 59:35Speaker 1: a bum ankle all year and he could not beat
- 59:39Speaker 1: guys to spots because he didn't have the get off
- 59:42Speaker 1: or the juice. He couldn't plant, he couldn't cut, he
- 59:45Speaker 1: couldn't change direction, and then when guys did attach to him,
- 59:48Speaker 1: he couldn't kind of break down an anchor. He would
- 59:50Speaker 1: just kind of get pushed and washed and whatever would happen. Right,
- 59:53Speaker 1: So I think anything that gets Torel Bernard moving is beneficial.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Anything that allows him to trigger. Just send him on stuff,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: you know, whether it's like a run stunt or a
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: rum blitz or just a blitz in general, Like, let
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: him attack, set him on the move. Don't have him
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: just sitting there at the second level, bouncing on the
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: balls of his feet, waiting for an inter your offensive
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: lineman to climb to the second level and get a
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: piece of them and potentially put him in the dirt
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: or wash him out of the frame. Rob says, did
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: McDermott ever play around with a three four? They brought
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: in a few of those tweeners over the years, Smoot,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: Austin Johnson, Quentin Jefferson. Every once in a while you'd
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: see like a bear front or some tight front type
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: of stuff or close to a tight front, but those
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: guys particularly, no, not really. They made Duan Smooth just
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: a traditional defensive end in their even front structures. Austin
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Johnson was a pretty decent rotational one tech, and they
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: brought him in and had him lose weight so he
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: could play the three and play the one, and he
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: just became largely useless overall. Along with Dwayne Carter, who
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: was more of a retech at duke, they had him
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: add more weight to be able to play a three
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: and a one and he became largely useless. And then
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Quentin Jefferson was more of just an inside penetrator again
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: though more of like the inside rush that they look
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: for at their defensive tackle stuff. So every once in
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: a while they do some odd front stuff, but not
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: enough to kind of really hit home or play play
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: around with it. M Oh, I'm so sorry, Justin, I
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: did not see the super chat forgive me, thank you
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: for being here, thank you for the super chat and
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: justice as I hope Jim has enough blueberries for each muffin.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Nice call out to the intro. I appreciate you. Yes.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: Comment here from IDL seven one six Casino one hundred. Yes,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Casino is my favorite mob movie ever in one of
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: my top five favorite movies of all time. I absolutely
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: love Casino one thousand percent. Great comment here from Charles.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Oh my headch sorry hold on. Charles says another reason
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: they needed a true nose tackle is keeping Bernard clean. Yes,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: that would help if you had a true nose in
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: that rotation, whether he's playing the nose in odd fronts
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: or if he's playing a three or a one likely
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: in your even front structures. Keep those linebackers clean and
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: similar idea with getting yourself a defensive end in those
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: four eyes. Right, Somebody who can eat double teams, who
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: isn't going to get blown off the ball into your
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: inside linebackers at the second level, right, Guys who can
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: mitigate displacement, Guys who got some weight in their shorts,
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: who are gritty, who are sandpaper type of dudes. You
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: just want guys who are painted the butt to play
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: it against. You want to beat them up. Type of
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: guys on the interior, guys who played with pop, who
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: played with violence, who played with juice. It's not just
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: about like guys who can penetrate and guys who can
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: get a field. It's more of a play style and
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: a skill set on top of it. But yes, for
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: a point there, Charles Chromatic Wonder saying, I can see
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: us trading away a few players from mid round picks
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: who guys aren't great fits. Dorian being one of them
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: would give us the extra Amma, we need to get
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: guys who are better fits. I never like saying i'd
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: vote to ship someone out, just like I never want
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: to say, like so I want to vote for someone
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: getting fired, because that's still a person with a job.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: If you gave me a fourth round pick for Dorian Williams,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I would take it. I would probably take it. I
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: think that's probably too high to ask. You'd probably get
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: like a fifth which is a little more questionable. But
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: if you gave me like an early day three pick
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: or somehow got a day two. I would probably take it.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Nick saying Casino over Goodfellas, I disagree with. That's a
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: respectable take. I think Goodfellas. For me, Goodfellaws was always
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: hyped up so much before I ever saw it. That
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I saw it and I was like, Okay, this is good,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: But I now like it was hyped to an impossible degree.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: So by the time I saw it, I was more
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: annoyed with it than I was like excited to see it.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: Whereas Casino, I'd never heard anybody talk about it, and
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: I was up late. I don't even remember how old
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: I was when I first got but I was up
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: late one night and it was on one of the
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: movie channels, or maybe it was on like TN T.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: They have a movie they play on T and T
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: a bunch all the time, but it be edited. And Yeah,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: and I saw Casino, and I thought Casino was the
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: cool thing. Plus, I love Vegas. I've been to Vegas
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: a bunch. I used to go there decently regularly, not
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: from MC gambling perspective, but just because I love Vegas
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: and the shows and the shopping and the food and
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: the strip and all that kind of stuff. Yeah, Casino
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: over Goodfellas all day for me, Casinos Casino is one
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: hundred my favorite mob movie ever, and it's a top
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: five movie for me overall. Joe says, you're both wrong.
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: Best mob movie is Shark Taaled ha ha ha. That's funny.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: You know what else is funny? Joe? Remember when you
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: came to Buffalo and you didn't get one pie pizza
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: and you stabbed me in the back. There you go,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: there you go, Joe. I'm sorry that you didn't deserve that. Joe,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: I appreciate you. You're a kind soul. Charles says casino
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: edited shame. Yeah, but I've seen it a million times
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: unedited too. I mean I have it on DVD. I've
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: watched that movie at gajillion times. God, I love that movie.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: Good Times where I want to grab this count from Jason,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: who says, can we go back in time and grab
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: ted Washington man? That would be great. Joe, stop trying
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: to blame me because you didn't get one pie pizza.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: You went late and they were sold out. That's on you.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: I'm sorry you chose to go elsewhere elsewhere, And Jason says,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: no way, good Fellas all the way. I yeah, I
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: recognize I'm in the minority for ranking Casino over Goodfellas
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: or even like Godfather or whatever. Yeah, I just like
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: I just like Casino. I don't think Goodfellas is bad.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: My wife loves Goodfellas. I mean I've probably seen Goodfellas
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: at this point now, like over twenty times, because I
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: mean we've been together for we started dating and then
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: have been married, but we we've been together for like
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: thirteen No, it'll be fourteen years this December. I've seen
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Goodfellas probably worked over twenty or thirty times at this
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: point because she loves that movie. Good times, and Nicholas says, yeah,
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: I think Joe catches astray about the pizza situation at
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: least once every episode one thousand percent, because if he's
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: gonna come in and you know, you know, shoot his
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: mouth off, I'm just kidding. Yeah, Joe says, they will
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: be this way until I finally have it. One thousand percent,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: until you get one pie. I am going to continue
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: to ridicule you for stabbing me in the back and
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: coming to Buffalo and not getting it, especially because you
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: said you were coming to Buffalo and you for the
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Bills game, and you were like I gotta get one pie,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: blah blah blah, and then you didn't get it. I'm like,
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: just just an op, that's what you are. If defensive
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: tackle Caleb Banks is available in the first round, would
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: you be opposed to the Bills taking him. I haven't
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: watched his tape yet, so I cannot comment from what
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: I have seen. He plays a little high which I
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: do not like. I don't know how correctable or not
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: correctable that is because I haven't watched his tape. But
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: I have not watched him yet, but that is definitely
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: one of the names that I will be working on
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: from an early standpoint. Ooh, Charles says, Bronxtail. That's my
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: brother's favorite momb movie. I believe he loves the hell
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: out of Bronxtail. That's fair. Joe says, I can't wait
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: to come back to Buffalo go to one pie and
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: then he told him not worthy of it and get
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: kicked out to have them put your picture up. So
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: when you go there, there's gonna be just mad pies
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: available and they're not going to serve you. Yeah, So
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: that makes sense for position archetypes for linebacker. Again, the
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: the hybrid nature of his linebackers at Wisconsin, and the
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: dynamics that they had were very important and meant a lot.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: It's gonna be tough to recreate that, like literally unless
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: you sign like Okay, hey we're gonna sign Leoshana, We're
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: gonna sign Jack Sanborn. You know, Hey, this is what
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: we're gonna do. It's tough to get those type of guys.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: And so I think you're probably gonna lean into more
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: of the defensive line changes and kind of supplement that
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: with one or two linebacker additions through free agency in
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the draft. I think Leoshanow would go such a long
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: way because of all the things that he can do
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: would just be absolutely tremendous for them. That is the
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: ideal guy specifically him, but again that type of skill
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: set or play style or I should say versatility again,
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: being able to wear multiple hats effectively. And if it's
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: an outside linebacker guy, it's you know, being able to
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: rush and play coverage. If it's an inside linebacker guy,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: it's being able to play downhill against the run and
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: also play coverage. Or if you're Leoshanal, you can do
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: all those things. You can line up outside, play rushing coverage,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: you can line up inside and play coverage and also
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: play downhill. That would be fantastic at the Adventures of
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Pluto Nash Get real, guys, that's funny, Drew says, Are
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: we lacking more in the d line or linebacker? Linebacker? Yeah, linebacker,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: because even even though I think Bernard can do some
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: fun things in the defense, I'm still not completely sold
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: on Bernard because I worried about I worry so much
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: about the block deconstruction struggles, even when he had a
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: good year in twenty twenty three and even twenty twenty four.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: If dudes get their hands on him, he gets buried,
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: which scares me. But he's a good coverage player, he's
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: smart as hell. But yeah, I would say linebacker in general,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: even if everything stayed the same, you don't know who
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: you're starting. Linebacker is opposite of to Treel Bernard. If
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: it's Dorny and Williams. Bernard and Williams is a pairing
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: have questions individually and as a duo. But now that
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: you're moving to more of an odd front hybrid front
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: structure defense, yeah, you don't have enough bodies and you
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: don't have the type of bodies that you need. At linebacker.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: So yeah, I would I would say linebacker. I thought
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: about it for a minute, but yeah, it's linebacker. It's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: linebacker because again it's twofold. You don't have enough bodies,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: and the bodies you do have don't tick all those hybrid, versatility,
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: dynamic boxes that you need to have tick, like even
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: Bernard right, Like Bernard can play coverage and that's like, Okay,
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: he's not really a downhill thumper type of guy, right,
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: And he's also you can blitz him, but he's not
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: going to win off the edge one on one, so
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: he can fee still works, but even he's a little
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: questionable from inter of taking every box holistically, if that
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: makes sense. Conversation, good comments. Oh man, my headache is
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: really coming back in a bad way. Last one I
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: want to talk about safety. This one for me is,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: oh I want to go back here this comment. If
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: you had to evaluate the Bills twenty twenty five draft
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: class after one year, what grade would you give? I
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: really hate doing this because I don't want to do
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: things after one year. But if I had to again,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: we'll go through the picks. I'll go individual. Max Harriston,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: I don't think counts because he was injured and didn't
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: get enough playing time. But what I did see of
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: Max Harston, I'd give Max Harriston a B to A
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: B plus. I was very encouraged by Max Harriston's play. TJ.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: Sanders again for the wonkiness. We know the variables, but TJ. Sanders,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: J J. Sanders, I'd give like a d u Landon Jackson.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: We got absolutely nothing from because of injury, so I
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: guess you can't really give him a grade, but if
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: you did, it would be low. Dion Walker, I will
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: give a B. Jordan Hancock, the Jackson Hawes B plus,
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Dorian Strong C plus maybe now C plus, Chase line Man,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: Kayden Pray there man. So overall, if I had to
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: give a drade on the drade, if I had to
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: give a grade on the whole class after one year,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: C I'm trying to think of how all those grades
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: average out, C maybe C minus. See somewhere in that range,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: maybe C plus, maybe B minus. If anybody wants to
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: tell me how everything should have averaged out, I can't
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: think great with much of my head hurts right now,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: but yeah, I'd say probably like a C somewhere in
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: the sea range. Low or high anywhere from a C
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: minus to a C plus. May Yeah, that's I'm saying,
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: ce go and see him, go and see Drew says,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: selling Hawes short. No, I really like Jackson Hawes, but
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: he's just he's he's not enough of a pass catcher
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: right now to be a true, like dual threat in
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: that regard. If we're talking purely on as a run blocker,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: as a run blocking tight end, oh, Jackson Hawes is
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: an A. But yeah, Spinn says, how does how does
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Jackson Hawes not get an A plus? His role is
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: to be a blocking tight end. He did amazing as
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: a blocking tight end, and we did get something out
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: of him in the passing game. He did really good
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: as a blocking tight end. I don't think it was
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: as amazing as it maybe got put up to be.
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I heard some people talking about him as like, oh,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: he's already the best blocking tight end in football, and
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: I don't think that's true. I think he played well.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: I gave him a B plus. I don't think like
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: a B plus is a bad grade. But if you're
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: gonna be like an for me, if you're gonna be
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: an a tight end, you have to be like stand
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: out as a locker and as a pass catcher or
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: super stand out in one area and then enough in
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: the other. I don't think he was enough as a
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: pass catcher, although I am encouraged and I do think
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: he can do more. And yeah, Drew, I did see
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: that seam catch. It was fantastic, But that one catch
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: does not a dual threat tight end make. But I
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: think a B plus is a good grade. How is
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: that a bad grade for a rookie? And again, a plus,
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: I get if you're tying it strictly to his role,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: if you're just saying, like, hey, he was a blocking
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: tight end, so we're just grading him on blocking. Yeah,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: he's an a player, but I'm grading him holistically, like
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: what can you do as a pass catcher? What can
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: you do as a run blocker? And there were also
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: times too, especially with like Dalton Kincaid being injured and
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: even when he was playing, not really being able to
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: play a ton. If Hawes was more of a pass
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: catching threat, you would have seen him be more of
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: a pass catching threat. I think he can be used
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: more as a pass catcher, but he's still limited in
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: that regard. And again, I know he blocked a lot
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: and did well as a blocker. But if you are
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: looking at you know, ideally what he could have been
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: when Kinkaid was out, or when Kikaid was playing and hurt,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: or also when Palmer was out. Think about that, right,
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: Kinkaid is out, or when he's playing, he's hurt, Palmer's out.
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Kean Coleman's not being a thing you're bringing in, Brandon cooks.
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: If Haws and Knox could have been a true, like
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: standout duo in terms of blockers and pass catchers each,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: then they would have been fine. Yeah. So that's why
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: I give him a B plus, which I still think
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: is real, really good grade. Oh man, these are good questions.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: Oh and Juw says, I think we're giving him extra
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: credit for where he was drafted. Oh that's very fair.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: I mean if we're going because he was what fifth round, Yeah,
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: that's fair. Like if we're talking about value, I'm talking
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: just about a great as a player as a rookie.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: If we're talking about value, Oh he's an easy eight.
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: You got like a you got a regular solid contributor
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: in the fifth round. That's that's a win every day
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: of the week. Wow, Gage sing b plus is generous. No,
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: I think B plus is good. Oh man, everybody each side?
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: This is interesting. I didn't know this would open up
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: such You can't. If you had to choose one poorly
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: graded player to improve the most next year and beyond,
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: who would you choose? Oh boy, I guess I'm looking
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: at everybody by default. Probably TJ Sanders, Yeah, because he
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: was he was the only one who played the most. Yeah,
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: probably TJ Sanders. But I don't love that. I don't
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: love that. Good questions, this is fine. Oh that made
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: my head hurt a little bit. All this thinking is
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: making my brain hurt. Safety This one, I think is
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: pretty straightforward with safety. The biggest thing that I think
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: will be interesting to note is Denver played a bunch
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: of single high stuff. Jim Leonard kind of played a
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: bunch of single high stuff when he was at Wisconsin
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: as well. I'm expecting that to continue. And when I
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: say single high, it's multiple. So you get Cover one,
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: which is single high man coverage, you get Cover three,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: which is single high zone coverage. But you're also going
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: to get match coverage elements with Jim Leonard across the board.
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: No matter what coverage you're playing, he is a guy
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: who played match coverage stuff at Wisconsin, which was another
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: one of the many reasons along with the sims and
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: creepers and hybrid front structures they used, you know, many,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: many of the reasons why I loved him at Wisconsin.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: But then with playing or you know, being under Vance
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: Joseph and his staff. Again, I talked about it. I
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: read this quote a bunch, but you know, Vance Joseph
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: talking about the defense last year of you know, what
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: we do is mostly pressure up front with matchup principles
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: on the back end, with what we call we're giving
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: the player one side of the route and we preach leverage.
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: If you win your leverage outside and the receiver breaks inside,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: you're gonna have a teammate there. It can look like man,
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: but it's not man. That's the beauty of what we do.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: That is the secret. Oh, Jim Leonard, from his time
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: at Wisconsin and from his time in Denver, a lot
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: of match coverage stuff, whether it's single high or it's
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: too high. But they played a bunch of single high
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: in Denver. I wonder how that much or how much
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: of that translates to the Bills defense. If they do
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: man yeah, spinn says it right here. We could have
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: had Bishop in Wattson, we would have been set on
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: safeties one thousand percent. The archetype here is purely simple.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: There is fairly simple. I think cold Bishop is good
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: comment about Macoobah, Yeah, fair I think cold Bishop. I
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: said this multiple times, Cold Bishop, and that is at
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: his best in and around the line of scrimmage. I
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: think he had improved as a deeper safety in both
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: single high and split field looks. I'm not saying to
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: completely stop him from doing that, just like I'm not
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: saying to get a pure center fielder type of guy
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: who can't play down. But I think taking cold Bishop
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: and having him play as more of a down safety
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: as much as possible, have him play in and around
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: the box, in and around the line of scrimmage, in
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: between the numbers, as more of a big nickel apex
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: off ball robber, buzz sky safety, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: I think that sets him up more for success than
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: anything else. I think he would just literally just he's
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: kind of kind of was this a little to a degree,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: but even more so the Bill's version of Ufanga of
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: telling O Hufanga, which who is the safety that the
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Broncos brought in this past year. So again more of
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: an enforcer box safety, come downhill, let him do stuff.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: As Charles says, and I've said this before on the
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: show too, Charles says in the Perfect World, I love
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: two new safeties with Bishop of the slot post chairon
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Johnson era one thousand percent. I think this isn't just
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: bills related, but this is you know, NFL meta like
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: large scale league trend type stuff. For me, I think
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: big nickels are this are going to be the scaleon
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: keys for defenses. Before, if you had a big nickel,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: it was more like, okay, that's cool, helps you do
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: different things. But you could just have a regular nickel
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: that could play the run and be fine. That's why
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: Terreon Johnson was great. That's why Mike Hilton was great.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: That's why Kenny Moore was great. You had these true
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: nickels who could play coverage man a zone to varying
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: degrees and that could come forward and fit the run
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: and you'd be fine and you never had to leave
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: nickel right And if you had a big nickel, it
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: was cool, but they'd get subbed out more. Now with
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: the run game, mattering again and being at a premium
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: for offenses and offenses going condensed and using heavier personnel
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: groupings in formations and trying to dictate personnel for defenses
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: based off that having a big nickel somebody that allows
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: you to fight fire with fire in the run, in
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: the pass against almost any personnel grouping is huge, And
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: that also allows you to play situations more than playing
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: personnel right instead of saying like, okay, they're in twenty
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: two personnel, but you know it's second down and they
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: pass sixty percent of the time on second down, So
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: do we really want to play for the run against
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: the heavy even though the heavy should kill us against
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: the run and is more of a run indicator. Are
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: they trying to go heavy to suck us up and
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: bring and invite bodies forward so they can get us
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: in the past, or they trying to do some you know,
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: some rams stuff where it's like, hey, we're going with
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: thirteen personnel, but we're doing it to throw the football.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: So I think having a big nickel is just a
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: skeleton key for you allah. And you know, Kyle Hamilton's
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: in Unicorn, but look at what Kyle Hamilton's done for
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: the Ravens defense. Look at what Jalen Petrie has done
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: for the Texans defense, right, These big nickels that allow
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: you to fight fire with fire personnel wise or situationally.
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: I think whole Bishop has the chance to be that guy.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: That's what I thought his best fit was coming out
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: of Utah, because that's kind of what he played as
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: at Utah was like an apex, big nickel, monster man
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: type of dude. But yeah, I would love him to
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: be that for the Bills post Aaron Johnson era, which
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: may be closer than we think potentially. Nicholas Oh Nicholas
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: college safety talking about Genesis Smith from Arizona. I watched
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: one game of Genesis Smith, very fluid center fielder. Love
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: him in the post. I don't like him coming forward,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: I don't like his angles to the ball, and I
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: don't like him as a tackler. But I'm only one
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: game in, so we'll see. I also really like Trad
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: and Stukes, who is ironically kind of more of a
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: big nickel, but he can play some safety stuff too.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: Oh Joey says, I saw you on a different show
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: the other day as a guest. Yeah, I've been on
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: a couple different things, so you probably see me around,
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: appreciate you coming over here. Carlos's Cooper Dejeen and Cole
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Bishop handshake. Gage says, what is a big nickel size wise,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: and then Drew says nick for the Seahawks. Yeah, so
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: think of Kyle Hamilton, nick Em and Worry. You could
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: kind of throw Cooper Degen into that mold a little
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: bit too, but essentially it is it's it's a defensive back.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: They kind of think of it as like a third
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: safety who just has athleticism to him. So for if
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: you're thinking from a size wise standpoint, two hundred plus
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: pounds but still athletic, you're not looking for a pure thumper,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: but you're looking for a guy who can move a bit,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: who can play coverage, but who can also play the run.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: So yeah, think Kyle Hamilton, think nick Em and Worry.
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: Cooper gin I think can fall into the big nickel
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: role or world as well. But yeah, you're thinking of
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: like I would say, roughly two hundred plow pounds plus.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Kyle Duggart can kind of fit big nickel
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: type of deal. He's maybe a little more limited in
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: coverage than you'd like but yeah, essentially big nickel is
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: like a a safety size but with athleticism in good coverage.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: Is the easiest way to kind of put him. Oh yeah,
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: or as Gage says, yeah and everything and everything backer. Yeah,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: like a uh, A smaller Matt Milano would be a
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: sweet big nickel. Like a two hundred and seven or
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: eight pound Matt Milano would be a sick big nickel.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: That's a good way to think of it. Yeah, but
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: where are we probably look at screen because there's an
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: archetype safety. So yeah, I say all that and answer
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: all these questions to say, oh yeah, Charles says Devin Witherspoon,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: I think Devin Witherspoon is more of a true nickel.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: But he plays like he's six foot two, two hundred
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: and thirty pounds. He hits like a freight train, and
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: he deconstructs blocks, and he doesn't have that dog in him.
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: He's got I don't know, a wolverine in him. He's
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: just an absolute monster, which is so crazy that they've
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: got him and Nick m and Worry as nickel options
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: and then they can leave him both on the field
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: with what Job and Woolen do on the outside, Like
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: man that Seattle defense is so cool. Yeah, I think
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: you need a pair of cole Bishop with a range
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: based ball hawking safety. Ideally, someone who's very comfortable as
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: a single high safety playing in the post can go
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: you know, numbers to numbers or you know, middle of
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: the field to the sideline as much as you can.
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: Someone who's good reading route distributions, can read the quarterback shoulders,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: understands route concepts, how to drive and how to slice,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: and then two high stuff too obviously you know, being
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: able to play those covered structures as well, but can
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: play and match, can play a man a little bit.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: Has to be good coming forward with their angles and
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: play in the run. It can't be completely silent, right.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: It can't be somebody who's all range and all coverage
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: and can't tackle and can't be in the box, right,
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: because then you're just that's cool that you have a
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: cool pairing of safety that compliments one another. But if
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: there's that siloed, you're not helping yourself, right, As somebody
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: said earlier, I forget who had said it. Yeah, I
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: think Spin said it in the chat. If you had
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Xavier Watts, you'd be set. That would be sick like
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: there's your post safety who can tackle. You're good too
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: high single high. He can play in the box. That
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: will be nasty. I really do. I thought they needed
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: this type of skill set again a rain. The way
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep speaking about it and coining it is
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: a range based ball hawking safety. I think they needed
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: that to pair with Bishop, even if everything stayed with
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: the defense of McDermot and Babbage State. But even more
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: so now if you're gonna play more single high, you
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: need uh, you need Kaylen Bullock. You need Kaylen Bullock,
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: like the safety four the Texans. Oh I'm glad, actually
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: Drew said this. Drew said, but Watts runs a four
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: to six. I didn't remember what his forty time was.
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: But don't get caught up with with like forty times
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: or time speed for like uh, like, oh, this guy
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: runs a four to six. He can't have range, he
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: can't cover ground. Micah Hyde tremendous safety from the post,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: tremendous coverage safety deep. Not the best athlete, not the
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: fastest dude, wasn't some ninety seven speed Madden type of dude.
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: But he knew how to take angles to the ball
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: in the air. He knew how to read route distributions,
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: and he knew how to read quarterbacks. That is absolutely tremendous.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: So yeah, it'd be sick if you add a safety
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: who like, oh okay runs a four to four right
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: or if he runs a four or five, that's awesome,
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: But it's man. That's why I kind of mentioned it
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: in like the skill set pieces that I'm looking for, right,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: it is it's about the processing. So much about safety
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: is two things. It's angles coming forward and going back right,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: so angles to the ball, angles to the catch point
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: angles and your ball tracking all that kind of stuff,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: and angles coming forward from two high structures and from
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: single high If you are that single high post safety,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: are you able to I can't believe you just took
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: my headphones out. Are you able to kind of run
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: that banana route type of deal from a single high
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: fit the run, be able to make the play right,
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: whether you're coming up and plugging it or taking the
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: good angle and shutting it down. If you're playing from
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: a two high structure, are you able to come and
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: fit the sea gap or whatever your type you're fitting,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: whether you're legit playing too high and you're kind of
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: running with seven man spacing, or if you're playing eight
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: man spacing and you're spinning down from the snap, angles
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: matter a lot. So time speed is great. It's awesome
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: to have that time speed. That's not the end all
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: be Also, don't don't think because you have your you're
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: a fast dude, you can have good range, because if
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: you can't process all the time speed in the world
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: doesn't matter at all. I want to grab this. Oh
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: it's fair from Jim Jacks. It turns into a four
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: to four if you know where you're going one. I know.
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: I think you asked this multiple times Devanaday saying what
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: do you think about Exavier and WAPA from I think
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: from Iowa as what you mentioned earlier. I haven't finished safety,
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: so I started with I started with the Arizona duo.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: I started with Genesis Smith and Trading Stoops. From there,
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: I'm going to Bud Clark from TCU and then my
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: waking from there. I kind of do everybody in groups
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: of three, So start with those three safeties and then
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: working my way from there. So I have not made
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: it past. I'm still on with all the coaching change stuff.
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: I've been diving in all this stuff with Leonard and
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: getting more things together. I've been diving into Javali stuff.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: The DB's coach Oklahoma, who I am absolutely stoked on.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: I am close to being I shouldn't say close, because
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: I love Leonard. I am extremely hyped for Javali, the
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: Bills DB's coach who's coming from Oklahoma, and I think
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: he's somebody who could be waiting in the wings to
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: take over his defensive coordinator. Should Jim Leonard get promoting,
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: go elsewhere. But yeah, I'm not there on other safety,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: so forgive me. I apologize. As Nichola says, great comment here,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: elite processing with average speed over average processing with elite
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: speed for safeties. What a fair common here from chromatic
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: Wanders saying I love Kamari Ramsey. He can play either
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: safety and playing the slot. Yeah, dude from USC If
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: I remember correctly, I think he had I put him
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: into the second bucket, be puz or not second bucket,
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: but not into the first bucket because yeah, I was
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: gonna say, because he got Yeah, he was hurt this
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: past year and majority of the snaps were like in
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: the slot. And I was already doing that for Stokes
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: in the first group from Arizona so I was like, Okay,
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna put Ramsey on the back burner for that.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: But yeah Fair six foot, two hundred plus pounds. Oh god,
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: I would trade so much for Caleb Downs. You have
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: no idea. I know, safety isn't the biggest need, right
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: The Bills need a receiver, the Bills need premier edge
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: pass rusher. They could do some interior stuff, they could
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: use a linebacker. I would trade so much to get
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Caleb Downs in round one. God, he's just so good
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: man and just a can do anything at safety, which
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: is sick, but yeah, I'd be sick. But yeah, so
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: that's the archetype for safety. I think you need a
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: ballhawk range based safety. I'm not completely ruling out Jordan Hancock,
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: but I just think he needs more time on task.
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: You know, he played a mix of like big nickel
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: and safety at Ohio State because of Ransom and Caleb
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Downs being the other safeties there and how they used
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: those two guys. I just think he needs more time
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: on task. I like his speed, I like the juice
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: that he plays with. He's a physical tackler, but I
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: think he's just struggling reading the game from depth right
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: now at this point from a pass cut, from a
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: pass standpoint, and from a run standpoint, his angles aren't there,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: his processing isn't there. Yeah, I like Hancock. I don't
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: want to go into twenty twenty six with the plan
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: being Jordan Hancock at safety, and then I don't think
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: Taylor Rap was you know, the menace that he was
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: made out to be. I know, all the friendly fire stuff. Hah.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: You know, he was injured playing all year and that's
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: why his angles of the ball were rough. But I'm
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: probably gonna cut if if I had the choice, I
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: would cut Taylor Rap. I feel bad saying that, because again,
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: I never want to advocate for somebody losing their job.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: But you can save like three mil and cut Taylor Rap,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: and it's it's you know, six hundred thousand or seven
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: hundred thousand in dead caps. So I'm probably I would
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: vote to cut Taylor Rap. And I'm just not putting
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: my chips into Jordan Hancock right now. I'm cool with
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: Hancock being safety three, continuing to learn, but I think
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: you either draft the starting safety or you sign one.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: I think he's gonna cost too much on the open market,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: but I like the idea of Kobe Bryant safety from
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: the Seattle Seahawks. He can play in the post, he
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: can play match coverages, he has played nickel before. He
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: can play down safety. That would be sweet, But I
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: think Kobe Bryant's gonna cost too much. I think He's
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: gonna get like fifteen to twenty million dollars a year,
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: might even honestly hit twenty depending on what the what
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: the rest of the market looks like. Because of what
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: he's done in this defense and the rep that the
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: Seattle defense has. I also know that Seattle, I think
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: wants to keep him, so maybe he might get paid
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: to stay there. But yeah, you need a ballhawk, range
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: based safety, guys who make plays in the ball, guys
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: who understand route distributions, can process from depth, take good
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: angles to the ball, good angles to receivers, good angles
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: coming forward. And your sound tacklers. Kobe Bryant's mistackle rate
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: doubled this year versus last year, but he still had
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: some really sound tackles, and I think he's a good
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: tackler overall. So that kind of messes with that a
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: little bit for me. But those are the archetypes that
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: I'm mainly focusing on right now and how they'll change.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: So we've got again, We've got hold on. Oh, Charles says,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: I know you love Miami. How aust miss Kiante Scott,
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: Keante Scott is so thick, Keyante Scott, Rubin Bain and
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: a Keem Mesador nasty, They're so good. And yes, Scott
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: especially is a blitzer from the slot. Man. Kiante Scott
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: is sick, is absolutely sick, one of my favorite players
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: watching this year. I was so hyped to watch Miami's
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: defense this year because Baine was healthy. He wasn't healthy
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: last year when he was a true sophomore in two
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: years ago as a true freshman, well three years ago.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Now he was so good. But I was so hyped
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: for Bain and then Mesador and even like Molten on
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: the interior, like they had some dues. They brought in
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: two new safeties which both worked out, Poyser and Jacoby Thomas.
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: And then they had the rookie Bryce Fitzgerald who so
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: many interceptions this year and played so well. But Kiante
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: Scott was super good, super super good. You know me, Charles,
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: should I reasonably the Bills defense to be better in
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: twenty twenty six than in twenty twenty five. Yes, I
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: think at worst, the only way this defense isn't like
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: a very good defense or a good defense is if
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: they can't get the right body types in to fully
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: be what Jim Leonard wants them to be. But I
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: believe in Jim Leonard so much in terms of installing
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: and building a sound scheme and being flexible with his
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: game planning and calls that like worst case scenario, I
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: do think this defense as a run defense and as
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: a pass defense worst case scenario, as I see this
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: defense being middling, like I see this defense is like
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: worst case scenario, like fourteenth to eighteenth overall and not like,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: oh they're fourteenth eighteenth because they're seventh against the pass,
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: but they're twenty ninth against the run. I don't think
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: that's gonna happen. I think worst case scenario, they're all
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: be overall and middling defense. But that would be better
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: than what they were this past year because they were
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: futrid against the run, and I think some of their
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: past stuff was a little inflated. But I think you
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: should reasonably expect the Bills defense to be better. If
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: they're not, I will be disappointed because I'm not even
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: reasonably expecting them to be I am expecting them to
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: be a better defense in twenty twenty six and twenty
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: twenty five, and not just because I wanted Jim Leonard
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: for three years. Drew says, if you can splurge on
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: one free agent for this defense, it has to be
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: the defense. Oh man, I need the whole list of
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: like free agents and I'm playing. I guess it's define splash,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: like splash for the Bills, because that's different than a
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: splash for kind of anyone else. Probably Kobe Bryant is
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: up there. I'm looking at a list of guys right now.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: Oh if I Oh no, here's my answer. If I
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: could splurge on one guy, so realistic splurge David Anyamata
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: or John Franklin Myers, I think that's like a splash
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: or a splurge, but more realistic, high end for their
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: position grouping type of splurge. Kobe Bryant at safety. Trey
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: Hendrickson is a UFA, which is fun. I would go
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: for Jalen Phillips. I would go for Jalen Phillips, former
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: edge from the Miami Dolphins, currently on the Philadelphia Eagles
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: or I guess a UFA as of this point. Now
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: I believe yeah, through the UFA. What I've seen. Jalen Phillips,
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: I know he just he works in an odd front
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: already gives you a premier guy off the edge. I
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: would splash for Jalen Phillips. Splurge, splurge, splurge. Oh yeah,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: you did say splurge, not splash, But that would be
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: a splash. Oh you know what a splash. The best
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo, New York that is one pie pizza.
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: Don't be like Joe de Rosa, Cover one member, frequent
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: disguise coverage watcher and live comment or, don't be like
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: Joe de Rosa who came up to Buffalo for a
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: Bills game and didn't get one pie pizza. Like an
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: absolute op and a backstabber, he did not get one
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: pie pizza. Don't be like Joda Rosa. When you come
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: to Buffalo, get yourself some of the best pizza in
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Buffalo and in the country at one pie pizza. If
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: you are living in Buffalo, why are you not getting
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: yourself some one pie pizza? Get yourself some one pie pizza.
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: Sweet sauce, pie cup and char pepperoni, great cheese, the
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: sauce ratio. If you get different toppings, they chop them
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: up evenly and sprinkle them over across the entire pie.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Homemade blue cheese that is phenomenal. They do a great
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: breakfast pizza. They have a catering division that they can
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: do different events for you. Anything you got and you
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: can get, you can get the pizza for that stuff.
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: They do really good salads. They do good like main
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: dishes like chicken and rice, and different kinds of mac
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: and cheeses. They are phenomenal in every way, shape and form.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: I've had a bunch of family. Well I get one
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: pie decently regularly anyway, but I like, I eat so
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: horribly in the winter, so I kind of like take
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: a break from the pizza, which is hard for me.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: But I've had a lot of I had some families
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: staying with us this past weekend. I've got some more
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: family coming in the weekend after this, after upcoming, and
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: so anytime anybody comes in, we get one pie to
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: kind of be like, hey, like this is the best
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: pizza in Buffalo, Like you should have some, which is awesome.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: So like I got one pie last week, gonna have
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: them get Oh yes, Rob says, all right, I'll try.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: You need to get some one pie pizza. Don't be
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: like Joda Rosa. Don't be like Joda Rosa and not
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: get one pie pizza. You are missing out. Your taste
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: buds are missing out, and the ones you love are
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: missing out. Share that joy with everyone. Right the super
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: bowls this weekend. Maybe you're gonna be super upset because
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: the stupid Patriots are in the super Bowl again, make
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: yourself feel better. What's some one Pi pizza? Right right?
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: Maybe watch the super Bowl You're like, oh man, I
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: hate the Patriots, but this pizza is so good that
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: I forgot about I forgot about the hate. Or let
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: the hate fuel you into the deliciousness of the pizza.
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: You will not You will not be disappointed getting yourself
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: some one pie pizza. They're really good people making really
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: good food. And I say they're really good people because
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: I know them and I know all the initiatives and
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: drives and everything that they do for the city of
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Buffalo in the community at large. So they're great. Get
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: yourself from one Pi pizza. Your taste buds will thank you.
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: The city in the community at large, will thank you
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: get yourself some one pie pizza asap. I'm gonna throw
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: up the banner here, but we're gonna grab some comments here.
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: I'm going back, Jason says, and are you okay with
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: a trade for Marvin Harrison Junior? Obviously justin Jefferson would
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: be better. But could that trade help us? Or do
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: you think he's a bus or just not a number
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: one wide receiver? You know what's crazy. I haven't watched
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: a ton of Cardinals offense. I don't understand what's going
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: on with Marvin Harrison. I just thought he was such
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: a high floor guy and so good in a multitude
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: of ways that he would be fine. I think he's
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: got the yips. I think a change of scenery could
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: help him. I would welcome Marvin Harrison Junior into Buffalo
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: off of just what I've seen from different training camp
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: stuff and routing guys up in the season. I think
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: he's got the yips. I think a change the scenery
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: would do him good. I would welcome Marvin Harrison Junior,
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: especially if you can get him. I just don't know
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: what you're be able to get him for, right, Like,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: if you are what's Arizona gonna give him up for
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: like they just spent a high one on him recently.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: Are they give him for a third? I think and
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: ask for a two. It's tough to sell off a
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: high first round pick after two years and get Oh,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: like what do you have to give up to get him?
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: But I would welcome Marvin Harrison Junior. Yeah, Rob, you're
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: spot on here. You said I heard Joe eats pizza
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: with a fork. Yeah, Joe's in the comments, but he's lying.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: I've seen Joe eat pizza with a fork on multiple occasions.
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: It's so weird. Yeah, Joe is a Joseph Fork user
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: for pizza all day. Fork and knife guy. He just sits,
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: he cuts it up. Yeah, like George Costanza with a
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: chocolate bar or whoever it is with the chocolate bar. Yeah,
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: Joe's It was the weirdest thing. You should see Joe, Yeah,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: because he Uh. I was in New York City with
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: Joe one time. We were walking and we got out.
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: We got a New York Slice and Joe was like, oh,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: you guys are only forks and knives, and We're all
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: like what. Yeah, Joe on the streets of New York
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: was sitting there eating his pizza with a fork and
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: knife like a herb. Mm hmmm mmmmm, Ronald. Ronald says, Uh, Anthony,
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: I have a question. Do you think they will stand
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: at Oliver up on the inside as part of their
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: new system? Thank you kindly for your time, service and videos. Oh,
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: I appreciate the kind of words. Thank you. I'm glad
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: you enjoyed them. Yes, I expect a lot of fun
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: things with that. All around this defense, I expected him
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: to I expect him to be stood up on the
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: inside on non passing down in distances third down specifically,
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: but non passing down in distances or true or non
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: passing situations or true dropback situations. I expect him to
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: be stood up on the inside. I expect him to see,
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: you know, some stand up stuff on the outside, you know,
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: as like a true edge like again I'll broncos you know,
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: Jonathan Cooper Nick Benito style. You know, I expect to
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: see him as like five tech or even as you know,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: like seven line him up outside kind of let him
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: work a little bit. I think that would be cool.
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: I expect to see that. I expect to see good
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: versatility from him. Ah, this is a good comment from Nick. Yeah,
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: Joe's all. Yeah, you watched that episode when I was
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: on Joe's Joe Show under review. Yeah, where he's talking
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: about going to all these forbidden gates and temples and
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: doing all these things that you're not supposed to do.
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: He would go there instead of going to one pie pizza.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: Oh Jesus, is probably a third or fourth, that's what
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: being reported. I would give a fourth every day of
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: the week for Marvin Harrison Junior right now. Spin says,
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: I pisa with a spoon. That's a challenge. Would Jaquan
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: Brisker fit at safety in Leonard's defense, Yes, but I
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: think he's more down safety than range baseball hawk safety.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: I think he's more like for like with Bishop than
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: he is different. Wouldn't hate it, but I don't think
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: the complimentary aspect works as well. But he's athletic, he
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: has some range, and he can play in the box.
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: But I think it's more same than it is different.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: Jim talking about Joe saying he uses ranch instead of
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: blue cheese. Yeah, Joe, he's funny. Joe carries ranch with
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: him at all times. When he gets pizza, he pours
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: the ranch on it and then he eats the pizza
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: with a fork and knife as it's covered in ranch.
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: It's the weirdest thing. It's the weirdest, weirdest, weirdest thing.
- 1:44:15Speaker 1: M m mmmm oh. Nick says, Joe is definitely a man.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: The chat has just turned on you, Joe. This is crazy.
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: Joe's definitely a pineapple pizza guy. I've had pineapple on piece.
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: I think it's good. Don't yell at me. Danny says,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: where do you see group fitting in? I see him
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: fitting in as a stand up edge rusher, a la
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: Jonathan Cooper, a lah Nick Bonito in these odd front
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: type of looks. I think I'll drop into coverage every
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: now and again, because he can do that, and he's
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: shown he's showed me he can be pretty adept at
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: doing that. I think they might reduce him down inside
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: in some sub packages and some known passing down in
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: distances or situations or true dropback situations. I like that,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: and I think that could help him a little bit.
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: I still do think you need a true edge one
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: as a pass rusher to pair him with. I think
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: he's more of a Robin than he is a batman
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: as a pass rusher. Again, much like I said last year,
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: I'm still in that same boat. And I think Joey Bosa,
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: until he got hurt, very much was the batman to
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: Groots Robin. But then he got hurt and the wheels
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: fell off and everything kind of went away, which was really,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: really really unfortunate. But yeah, I think RU will fit
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: and find him be good. Joseph's misinformation. No, that's not
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: true at all, Jason says, any updates on our athletic
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: or training staff, I think they're keeping if I remember correctly,
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: they're keeping like the same staff. Because being made some
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: comment about like the self inflicted injuries and then everybody
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: was like, well, why did you bring back the same staff?
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: Claud says Joey Bosa didn't doesn't fit in this defense, right,
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: Uh yeah, not really. He's more of a four down
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: and even on edge rusher than he is. More of
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: an odd front type of guy. You know, you could
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: use him on the edge, but you're just not gonna
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: want to drop him a lot. But I mean, hey,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: Khalil Mack has done it and he's not a dropper.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: Khalil Mack would be interesting to bring in again. Not
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: a juice guy, but Khalil Mack is just still awesome. Uh?
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: Has that Oliver got some Chris Jones in him as
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: a three four end?
- 1:46:24Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: I just think that's too lofty. I mean Chris Jones
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: was borderline like defensive MVP level for several years. I
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: don't think Ed has been that or maybe even has
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: that in him. So I'm gonna say no. But he's
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: got upside Ka Moore, he says, how about the safety
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: from Oregon to Peril? Bishop oh Dylan Dylan Daneman who yeah,
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: from who went from Purdue to Oregon this past year.
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: I have to watch tape on him. I want to
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: know how much of his range is there because I
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: think he played a lot of like three high safety,
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: you know, Tampa player type stuff, playing top down, so
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: I have questions on it. I have to watch him. Uh,
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: within his skill set, but I think he's more for me.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: I think he's more like Bishop than he is rangey
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: ballhawk guy, which again he's athletics, so it could work.
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: But I have to watch the tape on b B.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: Comment from Nate on Facebook, who says, who do you
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: one think? And to wish is our wide receiver one
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: next year? Oh Man who do. I wish. I wish
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: it was Alec Pierce, just because from the realistic standpoint,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: right he's a free agent, he can be had, but
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: he's gonna cost too much money. So I wish it
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: was Alec Pierce. I've just really liked him also, coming
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: out of Cincinnati, I've liked for years. I think it's
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: gonna be a rookie from the draft. I just think
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: it's gonna be too hard for Actually, you know what, now,
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna stick kind of what I've been saying. I
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: think I think the Bills are gonna trade for a
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: wide receiver one. I don't know who it is. I
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: don't necessarily I don't want a J. Brown because I
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: don't know. It just seems like you can't quit on Philly.
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: But to each their own, I think they're gonna trade
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: for a wide receiver one. I just don't know who,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: and I don't know from where. I'd like Chris o'labe. Oh,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: a lot of wide receiver comments coming in ted Hurst.
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: Jeremy Bernard, fair fair, fair, fair, fair, fair fair. Yeah,
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: we'll see it's gonna be fun whatever they Oh. Charles
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: says he is on the Denzel Boston train I have not.
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: The only wide receiver I've watched so far is Casey Concepcion,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: who I like, don't love, but I like him. Oh
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: I want to so, Jason says, No, A J. Brown,
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: we don't need Digs two point zero. I'm still gonna
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: I know how everything ended with Diggs. Diggs is the
- 1:49:00Speaker 1: Diggs is just ultra competitive and wants to win. Like Diggs,
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: leaving Buffalo for me was more akin to somebody getting
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: a better job offer elsewhere for more money and thinking
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: that that company was better, so they wanted to leave
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: their current job and go get that new job. AJ
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: Brown I think is more like I don't want to
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: say this because I don't know him and I'm not
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: in Philly like that, but like, I think his motivations
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: are more selfish than they are competitive. But we'll see,
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: we'll see, we'll see, we'll see. Who Curtiss, how much
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: would you trade for Justin Jefferson A decent chunk. I
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: would rather trade more for Miles Garrett. But I don't know.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: I see my thing I don't. I don't think they
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: need Justin Jefferson if they got him sick, I don't
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: think they need that high of a wide receiver. One.
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: You just need a wide receiver one. You just need
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: to have that. Or it could be a high end
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: wide receiver two, you just need that. At the top
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: of the depth star you need somebody with a vertical
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: presence and who can win one on one. That's it.
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: Somebody who's a threat to the point where they're like, uh, oh,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: we got to cover that guy. Which is why it
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: makes me iffy on how much I trade for Justin Jefferson,
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: because obviously Justin Jefferson is sick, like he's either the
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: first or second best receiver in the NFL. But like,
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: would Justin Jefferson being on their team be awesome? Absolutely?
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: Do they need him? No, like they just need they
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: just need a wide receiver one or a high end two.
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: That's it. That's it. But I would trade a decent
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: chunk for Justin Jefferson because that would be insane. Oh, man,
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: Terry McLaurin would be sick, Charles, I would love Terry McLaurin.
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: Oh that made my head hurt. I yelled too lovely.
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: Terry mcclorran would be sick. I love Terry McLaurin. I
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: hope you folks enjoyed this episode. If you have not already,
