- 1:22Speaker 2: Downs and then we're gonna do ups and downs. Of course,
- 1:26Speaker 2: because they got a new phone. I don't know if
- 1:27Speaker 2: they went in the new phone. Of course he didn't.
- 1:29Speaker 2: He didn't do it.
- 1:30Speaker 4: They did. I have I haven't. I did it, but
- 1:32Speaker 4: I did it before I got the new phone.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Okay, he is loving this new pid. All I hear about,
- 1:37Speaker 2: like five years, all I hear about is how he
- 1:39Speaker 2: has a new phone. At this one does this? It
- 1:43Speaker 2: does that like you're like a kid on Christmas. That
- 1:45Speaker 2: that gets a new PLAYSTATIONE toys? Oh my god, look
- 1:49Speaker 2: you're you're you're old. Too old for toys, all right?
- 1:52Speaker 4: Never too old for toys. Never too old for toys.
- 1:54Speaker 4: You're never too old for candy. Happy Halloween.
- 1:59Speaker 2: How was your Halloween? Uneventful?
- 2:02Speaker 3: It was?
- 2:02Speaker 4: I'm trying to remember what the game was. Oh, it
- 2:05Speaker 4: was that Jets Steelers game or no Jets?
- 2:08Speaker 3: Uh?
- 2:08Speaker 2: That was? That was? That was scary game.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I've seen. Tonight's game should be better. Tonight's game should
- 2:14Speaker 4: be good.
- 2:15Speaker 2: There you go. How do you like your phone?
- 2:18Speaker 4: I like it? How do you like your new computer?
- 2:20Speaker 4: It's great. You came to me the other day.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I'm so excited. I had a I had a big
- 2:25Speaker 2: smile on my face. I I this is gonna sound
- 2:28Speaker 2: like such a snobby thing to say, but I'm gonna
- 2:31Speaker 2: say it anyways. So when I started here, they gave
- 2:33Speaker 2: me a PC. And I'm not a PC guy. I'm
- 2:35Speaker 2: a Mac guy and I've been.
- 2:37Speaker 4: It's you just be careful with sponsors here and all that.
- 2:41Speaker 2: That's a very good point. So I'm a one computer
- 2:45Speaker 2: company guy and not another computer company guy. And after
- 2:49Speaker 2: my time here, finally I've convinced the right people to
- 2:53Speaker 2: give me the right computer.
- 2:55Speaker 4: And I am beaming. I am that.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I mean, it's got a great big screen and the
- 3:00Speaker 2: brightness and the batteries fantastic. It's so fast. It's just
- 3:04Speaker 2: it's a machine. I love it.
- 3:05Speaker 4: It is a machine. It's a computer.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Yes, it's a fantastic machine.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I'm not gonna judge you for joying that I have
- 3:10Speaker 4: my new toy I enjoy it. I'm still enjoying it.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I'm glad you're enjoying your new toy.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I hope I didn't offend any sponsors like our great
- 3:16Speaker 2: friends at Toyota. Hey, Patriots fans, if you want to
- 3:19Speaker 2: see Toyota's best offers, including those not seen on TV,
- 3:22Speaker 2: go to buy a Toyota. Dot com is Toyota's official
- 3:25Speaker 2: website for deals from the official vehicle of the New
- 3:28Speaker 2: England Patriots. Toyota. Let's go places. I used to have
- 3:31Speaker 2: a Corolla black on black Corolla. It's really nice.
- 3:35Speaker 4: I don't know if I my friend had a corol.
- 3:36Speaker 4: I don't know if I've read a Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So when I lived in La you know, city driving stuff.
- 3:40Speaker 2: You don't want a big car. So I had a
- 3:42Speaker 2: black wheels, black everything.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Oh you had the blacked out Yeah, it was nice,
- 3:46Speaker 4: it was cool.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I liked it. Also, easy to drink, easy to enjoy.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Bud like the official beer sponsor of your New England Patriots.
- 3:54Speaker 2: All right, So I had a tough time figuring out
- 3:57Speaker 2: where I wanted to start today because I have a
- 4:00Speaker 2: lot of mixed feelings about the Patriots right now. You know,
- 4:04Speaker 2: Drake May is really showing us exactly what we all
- 4:08Speaker 2: wanted to see. And there's two things that I keep
- 4:10Speaker 2: coming back to from a big picture sense. And I
- 4:13Speaker 2: was actually talking to John Rook about this on the
- 4:16Speaker 2: playbook yesterday and I really felt like it was a
- 4:19Speaker 2: good conversation. You know, There's there's two conversations to be had.
- 4:22Speaker 2: One is all the little things that are going wrong
- 4:27Speaker 2: week to week with this team that are stacking up
- 4:29Speaker 2: to losses and the frustration of losing, and uh, it's
- 4:33Speaker 2: it's frustrating as fans, as as people that cover the team,
- 4:36Speaker 2: as the team itself, Like no one likes to lose.
- 4:39Speaker 2: No one likes losing. I understand that, But I think
- 4:44Speaker 2: the the big picture thoughts that I keep coming back
- 4:47Speaker 2: to are one every time I want to come on
- 4:51Speaker 2: here or and written and just come on and rip
- 4:55Speaker 2: the coaching staff for the lack of details or whatever
- 4:59Speaker 2: they're not doing right in my eyes. Right from my perspective, uh,
- 5:02Speaker 2: you have to always like see the forest for the
- 5:05Speaker 2: trees a little bit and recognize that this team doesn't
- 5:08Speaker 2: have a whole lot of talent on the roster, right,
- 5:11Speaker 2: So you're you're not asking like Vince will Fork to
- 5:14Speaker 2: plug the A gap, right, You're not asking Richard Seymour
- 5:18Speaker 2: to rush the passer like you're You're asking guys and
- 5:20Speaker 2: expecting things out of guys that frankly, uh, either weren't
- 5:25Speaker 2: supposed to be there or aren't really up to the task.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And so when I come on here and I take
- 5:32Speaker 2: shots at the coaching staff or I critique the coaching staff,
- 5:35Speaker 2: I do have to keep reminding myself of that. The
- 5:38Speaker 2: other element of it that I keep reminding myself of
- 5:41Speaker 2: is when we came into this season, if we came
- 5:45Speaker 2: out of it feeling like they have a franchise quarterback
- 5:47Speaker 2: in Drake May. Like, isn't this season sort of a
- 5:51Speaker 2: win just by that, right, Like just because you found
- 5:54Speaker 2: the guy at quarterback and you feel really good and
- 5:56Speaker 2: not like Mac Jones rookie year good, Like this guy
- 5:58Speaker 2: can actually be a potential top five quarterback MVP type
- 6:03Speaker 2: quarterback in this league. Like if I had told you
- 6:05Speaker 2: that Alex back in August that we would feel by
- 6:08Speaker 2: January that Drake May was truly a franchise quarterback type guy. Yeah,
- 6:17Speaker 2: because I was right. I was head of the curve.
- 6:20Speaker 2: But at the same time, like if I told you
- 6:22Speaker 2: that that was cemented this season, just make just play along.
- 6:28Speaker 4: I think there were talks of all votes if I
- 6:31Speaker 4: remember Craig Pro Bowler all pro one.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Of them, and look who.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Is right, I'm setting I'm giving you credit.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you're who was I know the clips
- 6:41Speaker 2: out there because there's that and I forget his name,
- 6:43Speaker 2: that guy who watches the show who pulls clips.
- 6:45Speaker 4: It was the day of the Eagles practice and he
- 6:47Speaker 4: tweeted out your quote about Drake May.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look, I'm not ready to do any
- 6:52Speaker 2: victory laps yet. It's too early and there's still things
- 6:54Speaker 2: that he needs to work on, and I want to
- 6:56Speaker 2: get to that. It's not a finished product yet. I
- 6:59Speaker 2: can't sit here and say that he's where He's exactly
- 7:03Speaker 2: what I expected, which I think is different from what
- 7:06Speaker 2: others expected. Like I am not surprised, and I didn't
- 7:10Speaker 2: want to go to Drake yet, but like, I'm not
- 7:11Speaker 2: surprised by anything that we're seeing from Drake may because
- 7:15Speaker 2: I always knew that he was capable of doing the
- 7:17Speaker 2: things he's doing right.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Now, I would say he slightly surpassed my expectations. Now
- 7:22Speaker 4: there are things he needs to work on, and those
- 7:24Speaker 4: don't like the issues he's having. I'm not gonna sit
- 7:27Speaker 4: here and say there aren't issues. He's a rookie quarterbacks.
- 7:29Speaker 4: From the issues, I don't think there's been anything that's
- 7:31Speaker 4: an issue that I look at and I say, well,
- 7:34Speaker 4: I didn't expect that to be a problem, right, the turnovers,
- 7:39Speaker 4: reckless play for lack of a better word, it's not
- 7:41Speaker 4: exactly the word I want to use, but maybe being
- 7:42Speaker 4: too reckless at times, Like he needs to be better
- 7:45Speaker 4: about that stuff. But I wouldn't say it's surprising, like
- 7:49Speaker 4: that's kind of what you were signing up for. You
- 7:51Speaker 4: knew you got what you signed up for with Drake may.
- 7:54Speaker 4: I think there hasn't been a ton that you look
- 7:56Speaker 4: at one way or the other and say, well, that
- 7:57Speaker 4: was unexpected.
- 7:58Speaker 2: This is exactly and this is a sort of part
- 8:01Speaker 2: of my point, right, this is exactly what I expected
- 8:04Speaker 2: him to be in his rookie season. I expected because
- 8:08Speaker 2: Frank this is exactly what he was at North Carolina. Now,
- 8:11Speaker 2: he was better at taking care of the ball at
- 8:13Speaker 2: North Carolina, but it's also college versus the NFL, but
- 8:16Speaker 2: in general at North Carolina, and if you actually watch
- 8:19Speaker 2: their games and talk to people down there and things
- 8:22Speaker 2: like that, they'll tell you that he has five plays
- 8:26Speaker 2: a game that make your jaw drop. Whatever it's throws,
- 8:29Speaker 2: running out of st ructure or whatever, he has five
- 8:32Speaker 2: plays a game that just make you go, holy crap,
- 8:34Speaker 2: this guy is incredible. But at the end of the day,
- 8:38Speaker 2: there's some bumps along the way, and sometimes the results
- 8:41Speaker 2: as a team, the wins and losses don't always come
- 8:44Speaker 2: to fruition, and you wonder how much of that is
- 8:48Speaker 2: him and how much of that is what's around him,
- 8:50Speaker 2: And you have that whole conversation. But back to the
- 8:53Speaker 2: original point, I want to give some grace to the
- 8:57Speaker 2: coaching staff because of what they're working with. I don't
- 9:00Speaker 2: think that they're working with great tools, right. But at
- 9:06Speaker 2: the same time, they're doing things that shouldn't be about talent, right,
- 9:13Speaker 2: Like they're doing things that are just hurting the team
- 9:18Speaker 2: and making it more difficult for the team to win
- 9:21Speaker 2: that have nothing to do with talent. You know, talking
- 9:24Speaker 2: about lineup changes, and we're potentially going to see another
- 9:27Speaker 2: one on the offensive line on Sunday. I still have
- 9:31Speaker 2: not heard a great explanation from Gerrodmeo or Alex Van
- 9:35Speaker 2: Pelt as to why Laden Robinson started that game on
- 9:38Speaker 2: Sunday against the Titans and Jeffrey Simmons, I still haven't
- 9:41Speaker 2: heard a great explanation. If they had come out and
- 9:43Speaker 2: they had said two things that I think would have
- 9:45Speaker 2: been good explanations. We felt like the right side of
- 9:49Speaker 2: Robinson and on when it was going to allow us
- 9:51Speaker 2: to run the football. I could hear that those two
- 9:54Speaker 2: guys are are are strong, powerful, good run blockers. Maybe
- 9:59Speaker 2: I could hear that, but they didn't run the ball
- 10:01Speaker 2: effectively one and two that they haven't said that. Number two,
- 10:06Speaker 2: if they had said at this point in our season.
- 10:09Speaker 2: You know, we're two and six or two and seven now,
- 10:12Speaker 2: we just want to play the kids, and we just
- 10:14Speaker 2: want to develop the roster and play the kids and
- 10:17Speaker 2: see what these guys get. I got so that we
- 10:20Speaker 2: can get to next offseason. Okay, fine, I can hear
- 10:23Speaker 2: those explanations. But if you're just trying to win the
- 10:25Speaker 2: game on Sunday, like that was not That was not
- 10:28Speaker 2: the way to do it, right, Like that was a
- 10:30Speaker 2: good decision.
- 10:31Speaker 4: No, it wasn't. It annoyed me, Like we talked so
- 10:34Speaker 4: much about building the continuity and it felt like they
- 10:36Speaker 4: were starting to do it and to make that move
- 10:39Speaker 4: at the expense of your best offensive lineman and I
- 10:42Speaker 4: get it. You want to play the kids, and this
- 10:43Speaker 4: is my theory. They just like Ladon Robinson he was
- 10:45Speaker 4: the draft picks City still wasn't. Michael Jordan wasn't. And
- 10:49Speaker 4: they want to get the kid in there and make
- 10:51Speaker 4: it work. And I mean they they were talking about
- 10:54Speaker 4: in camp. Remember thinking he was like, They're like, we
- 10:57Speaker 4: think he can be one of the best guards in
- 10:58Speaker 4: this league. Like three weeks in a camp when I
- 11:00Speaker 4: said is that they were very I remember them being
- 11:03Speaker 4: like oddly high on him. Early and King.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I think he's got a potentially bright future,
- 11:10Speaker 2: there's no doubt about that. But right now, as a
- 11:14Speaker 2: pass protector, Leyden Robinson is not NFL caliber. So you're
- 11:17Speaker 2: putting a guy out there, and yeah, maybe you're hoping
- 11:20Speaker 2: to develop him and all that, and I get that,
- 11:22Speaker 2: but you're putting a guy out there that at the
- 11:24Speaker 2: moment cannot pass protect at an NFL level. Now, this
- 11:27Speaker 2: Bears front doesn't have a Jefferyson in the middle. You know,
- 11:31Speaker 2: Montes Sweat's a really good edge rusher if he plays
- 11:34Speaker 2: in this game, but they don't really have They don't
- 11:37Speaker 2: even have a Devandre Sweat, the kid from Florida. I'm
- 11:40Speaker 2: blanking on his name right now as a decent player,
- 11:43Speaker 2: but he's not. He's not Jeffery Simmons, right, So they
- 11:46Speaker 2: don't have one of those guys. But we're starting to
- 11:49Speaker 2: see it. Monday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday in practice, we're
- 11:55Speaker 2: starting to see another offensive line combination. You know, Mike
- 11:58Speaker 2: on Wenny Wet left guard, Leyden Robinson in at right guard,
- 12:02Speaker 2: and we're starting to see more changes to this offensive line.
- 12:07Speaker 2: The sequence before the half, which Alex Van Pelt said
- 12:11Speaker 2: today was the most disappointing two plays of the entire
- 12:14Speaker 2: game on Sunday was also to me still not still
- 12:19Speaker 2: don't have a great explanation Like his explanation today of
- 12:23Speaker 2: when you're running downhill two plays in a row you
- 12:25Speaker 2: should be able to get a yard does not explain
- 12:28Speaker 2: to me why you're prioritizing the yard in the two
- 12:31Speaker 2: minute drill, right, Like, if you throw the ball on
- 12:33Speaker 2: second and third down and you find a completion, the
- 12:36Speaker 2: assumption is is that you're going to pick up the
- 12:38Speaker 2: first down organically, like you shouldn't have to be stressed
- 12:42Speaker 2: about picking up a yard, you know. So they went
- 12:45Speaker 2: in there, they put they kind of put the offense
- 12:47Speaker 2: back into the four corners and they just sort of
- 12:50Speaker 2: parked the car to prioritize a yard. And then his
- 12:55Speaker 2: lament is, well, we couldn't, we couldn't pick up the yard, okay,
- 13:00Speaker 2: but if you throw on second and one and Drake
- 13:03Speaker 2: may hits a ten yard pass on second and one,
- 13:05Speaker 2: then we don't even have to worry about third and one, right, Like,
- 13:07Speaker 2: that's right, That's where I don't understand that one. And
- 13:10Speaker 2: we can obviously get into this as well a little
- 13:12Speaker 2: bit in overtime. Taking the wind or not taking the wind,
- 13:17Speaker 2: or whichever way you want to put it. Kicking, let's
- 13:21Speaker 2: call it not factoring in the wind. Not factoring in
- 13:23Speaker 2: the wind to not confuse people. It's just what's the
- 13:29Speaker 2: word like?
- 13:31Speaker 3: It just is.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Not paying attention to the details right like, And you
- 13:36Speaker 2: have to be more buttoned up than that. Which way
- 13:40Speaker 2: the wind is blowing has nothing to do with who
- 13:42Speaker 2: is playing left guard for you right or who is
- 13:44Speaker 2: playing defensive tackle for you against the run, or.
- 13:47Speaker 4: We have an all Pro team out there the winds
- 13:49Speaker 4: and it might be mitigated, but it's all the more reason.
- 13:52Speaker 4: And this is something I talked about this coaching staff
- 13:54Speaker 4: at the beginning of the year, like they were gonna
- 13:56Speaker 4: have to elevate the players right, the roster being what
- 13:59Speaker 4: it is, all the more reason, every little detail right
- 14:02Speaker 4: has to be locked down. I found the Laden Robinson quote.
- 14:05Speaker 4: By the way, I remembered it a little bit. It
- 14:08Speaker 4: was also after the first regular season game. It wasn't
- 14:10Speaker 4: in camp. Yeah, this was in response to the first game.
- 14:14Speaker 4: After the Bengals. There was a point during training camp
- 14:17Speaker 4: where not only myself, but I think the other coaches
- 14:19Speaker 4: saw it. Who was this Girod. Sorry, Okay, there was
- 14:23Speaker 4: a point in time during training camp where not only myself,
- 14:26Speaker 4: I think the other coaches saw it. We said, Laydon
- 14:28Speaker 4: Robinson has an opportunity to be a special player in
- 14:32Speaker 4: this league. He's tough, he'll move guys off the line
- 14:34Speaker 4: of scrimmage. He can't do it all. His overall effort
- 14:37Speaker 4: and mentality is something that when you think about changing
- 14:40Speaker 4: the culture, he's definitely one of those guys that fits
- 14:42Speaker 4: into that box. He did a great job now saying
- 14:45Speaker 4: that it's only one game, we'll see how that continues
- 14:47Speaker 4: to progress going forward. That sounds like a guy that
- 14:50Speaker 4: you're gonna try to And granted this was two months ago,
- 14:52Speaker 4: but that's the description of a guy the coaching staff
- 14:55Speaker 4: believes should be in the lineup no matter what. Yes,
- 14:57Speaker 4: and you go to that culture stuff. So that's where
- 14:59Speaker 4: it's like, again, I'm not telling you Laydon Robinson is
- 15:03Speaker 4: just gonna suck for all of eternity. But he's not
- 15:05Speaker 4: ready yet. Yeah. You even look at Mike go and
- 15:07Speaker 4: when who was a great calm for this. He sat
- 15:09Speaker 4: in twenty one and I know there were some external
- 15:12Speaker 4: circumstances there, but he's sat in twenty one and it
- 15:14Speaker 4: made him a better player in twenty two.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, so like Leyden Robins.
- 15:18Speaker 4: So you just said a lot. So I just want
- 15:20Speaker 4: to well like for the plus, I want to get
- 15:21Speaker 4: to it. Lane Robinson being in the lineup right now
- 15:25Speaker 4: is not what's best for Ladon Robinson. It's also not
- 15:27Speaker 4: what's best for Drake May. I get play the kids.
- 15:28Speaker 4: I understand that you play the kids as a baseline,
- 15:31Speaker 4: understand what you have. I think they should more or
- 15:34Speaker 4: less know where Laydon Robinson's aut at this point, and
- 15:36Speaker 4: he doesn't look like a guy who should be on
- 15:37Speaker 4: the field, especially when your best offensive lineman is right
- 15:40Speaker 4: guard and you keep moving him around. You're not going
- 15:43Speaker 4: to allow him to maximize his game. You're risk agitating
- 15:45Speaker 4: the guy. I know he just got paid, but you're
- 15:47Speaker 4: risk agitating the guy. I just Laydon Robinson is not
- 15:50Speaker 4: a guy. If anything truim it left. But he's liability
- 15:54Speaker 4: and pass protection right now. And how many times have
- 15:56Speaker 4: I said this with the receivers. Ideally, what's best for
- 15:59Speaker 4: Drake May and what's best for Laydon Robinson is the
- 16:01Speaker 4: same thing right now, It's not and you have to
- 16:04Speaker 4: default to the quarterback for the end of the half thing.
- 16:06Speaker 4: People probably have the speech memorized at this point, right,
- 16:09Speaker 4: like I haven't been like that.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Hot and bothered by the end of the half stuff
- 16:13Speaker 2: because you know, this isn't usually because I don't care,
- 16:15Speaker 2: because you.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Don't believe that the clock matters a football game. Play
- 16:18Speaker 4: forty minutes, play seventy minutes.
- 16:19Speaker 2: You don't care that aside, The part that annoyed me
- 16:24Speaker 2: about the end of the half was the play call,
- 16:28Speaker 2: like deciding to run the ball. So the way it
- 16:29Speaker 2: has something to do with managing the clock or anything
- 16:31Speaker 2: like that like this, it's about the actual play calling
- 16:35Speaker 2: of running the football there, And I get it, you think, so,
- 16:39Speaker 2: but what's the goal? Like this, what's the goal? So
- 16:41Speaker 2: you pick up the yard? Sorry, but just like what's
- 16:43Speaker 2: the goal? Like, you pick up the yard? And now
- 16:46Speaker 2: it's first and ten at what the you know, forty
- 16:48Speaker 2: yard line, let's call it, right, They gained twenty four
- 16:51Speaker 2: yards on first first down, you know to Kendrick Bourne,
- 16:55Speaker 2: back to back plays, I think it was twenty three yards, right,
- 16:57Speaker 2: and by the way, an out route to the sideline
- 16:59Speaker 2: that the Titans were just giving them. Yeah, I don't
- 17:01Speaker 2: want to take anything away from Drake or Kendrick Bourne,
- 17:03Speaker 2: but like it wasn't exactly thrown into a key hole.
- 17:06Speaker 2: So we're talking like it's first and ten, let's call
- 17:09Speaker 2: it from their own forty yard Yeah, so riped the
- 17:14Speaker 2: like what's the goal?
- 17:15Speaker 4: But like, but the situation plays into that. On one hand,
- 17:18Speaker 4: like you have less time, even more reason to go
- 17:22Speaker 4: for the chunk. The other one is, for whatever reason,
- 17:25Speaker 4: they're watching these right, would you say they got too
- 17:28Speaker 4: cute in that situation? Would you say they may be
- 17:30Speaker 4: overthought it? Let me use that. Would you say they
- 17:32Speaker 4: overthought the situation?
- 17:33Speaker 2: I don't know if overthought are too cute, it's the
- 17:36Speaker 2: right word for it. I just feel like their priorities
- 17:39Speaker 2: are out of whack. Like, in my opinion, when you're
- 17:42Speaker 2: in that situation, the most important thing things are the clock,
- 17:47Speaker 2: the field position in getting points.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Okay, so but this is my point. You're saying, like
- 17:51Speaker 4: the clock, the situation does matter. The situation it was
- 17:54Speaker 4: in emphasizes the mistake of the play calling right, And
- 17:57Speaker 4: this is my point. For whatever reason it is. When
- 18:00Speaker 4: you get the ball inside of two minutes at the
- 18:02Speaker 4: end of the first half, you have the ball, the
- 18:05Speaker 4: one thing you cannot do is give the ball back
- 18:08Speaker 4: to the opponent. Ideally want to score, that's great, touchdown
- 18:12Speaker 4: would be preferred. You take a field goal in some cases,
- 18:15Speaker 4: but there are some instances, like I know people didn't
- 18:18Speaker 4: like they ran to the clock out against the Jets.
- 18:21Speaker 4: I understand the frustration with that, but at least you
- 18:23Speaker 4: picked the lane. At least you picked the lane. And
- 18:25Speaker 4: also it's like, yeah, you're starting quarterback got hurt. Okay,
- 18:27Speaker 4: I get it. But they had a plan and they
- 18:29Speaker 4: executed it. They've had six of these opportunities now this year, which,
- 18:33Speaker 4: by the way, is kind of wild that this is
- 18:35Speaker 4: coming up every single almost every single game. They've had
- 18:38Speaker 4: it six times in nine games where they get the
- 18:40Speaker 4: ball with a minute and a half to two minutes
- 18:42Speaker 4: to go. Yeah, and multiple timeouts and it's either go
- 18:45Speaker 4: try to score or take the ball to the half.
- 18:48Speaker 4: The one thing you absolutely cannot do is punt or
- 18:51Speaker 4: turn the ball over, like you can't give the ball back.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I give them credit for one and a half of six,
- 18:57Speaker 4: right that the Texans game they got although it took
- 19:00Speaker 4: Drake May going so the man.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Right, that's the thing is like the Texans one they
- 19:03Speaker 2: got by default, and I have a bigger point about it.
- 19:06Speaker 4: But sometimes sometimes like I don't necessarily hate if the
- 19:09Speaker 4: plan is sometimes counting on Drake Man to be Superman.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Yeah they're and overall back like fine, yeah, so.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I give them that. I give them half of a
- 19:15Speaker 4: credit for the Jets one because they executed a plan.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Maybe it wasn't the plan that should have been, but
- 19:19Speaker 4: they executed a plan. So that's that's a twenty five
- 19:23Speaker 4: percent success rate in what is a crucial especially when
- 19:27Speaker 4: some of these have been potential double scores that was
- 19:30Speaker 4: the other twenty five, or they've set up on the
- 19:33Speaker 4: inverse double scores for the other teams. Now, they didn't
- 19:35Speaker 4: get burned as bad as they should have in this
- 19:37Speaker 4: one because Tennessee also threw up all over themselves. That
- 19:40Speaker 4: was also a terrible, too terrible two minutes roll by
- 19:42Speaker 4: the Titans. It wasn't the worst two minute display we've
- 19:45Speaker 4: seen this way. By the year the Miami game, both
- 19:47Speaker 4: teams still worse. But the point being, you should not
- 19:50Speaker 4: be succeeding twenty five percent of the time in what
- 19:53Speaker 4: are massively key situations in football games, and it Girad
- 19:59Speaker 4: Mayo talked about we can't be mistake repeaters right early
- 20:02Speaker 4: in the year. It's time and time and time again.
- 20:05Speaker 4: And they did it the first time, and you know,
- 20:08Speaker 4: Mayo acknowledge we have to be better. They did it
- 20:09Speaker 4: the second time, Mayo acknowledged it was just like the
- 20:11Speaker 4: first time. We screwed that up six times in I mean,
- 20:15Speaker 4: what are we doing? Yeah? What are are they not
- 20:17Speaker 4: learning anything?
- 20:18Speaker 2: I just don't And this is my bigger point of
- 20:22Speaker 2: it all when it comes to this situation, and really
- 20:25Speaker 2: the win situation too, they just don't have control of
- 20:28Speaker 2: the situation, like they don't know. I'd doesn't feel like
- 20:31Speaker 2: they have a plan, like they don't know what they're
- 20:33Speaker 2: trying to do. So they get caught in like this
- 20:36Speaker 2: middle sort of situation of like, you know, okay, we
- 20:41Speaker 2: go past pass on the first two plays of.
- 20:44Speaker 4: The two minute drill.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Now we're in second and one, and now we're running
- 20:48Speaker 2: right and we're just we're getting caught in the middle
- 20:50Speaker 2: here of all, right, are you being aggressive or are
- 20:52Speaker 2: you being conservative? Like why did you throw the ball
- 20:55Speaker 2: on the first two plays of the drive if you
- 20:57Speaker 2: wanted to be conservative, because well so, then get on
- 20:59Speaker 2: second and third down.
- 21:00Speaker 4: Is conservative? There's been times they've gone like run past
- 21:04Speaker 4: pass and it was, you know, the approach conservative versus aggressive.
- 21:07Speaker 4: I think they overthought it and they got too I
- 21:10Speaker 4: think the overall approach was being aggressive. But they saw
- 21:14Speaker 4: the second and one and their eyes lit up and
- 21:16Speaker 4: they're like, ooh, easy, first down, right. I don't think
- 21:18Speaker 4: it was suddenly, let's get conservative. That's like the whole
- 21:21Speaker 4: thing to me though, because I know that's ultimately a
- 21:25Speaker 4: conservative approach. But I don't think they got to the
- 21:27Speaker 4: fort like when I you're conservative two minute drill. I
- 21:29Speaker 4: don't think they got to the forty and decided, oh,
- 21:32Speaker 4: we gotta start running the clock. Yeah, right. I think
- 21:34Speaker 4: they got that point and said, all right, let's pick
- 21:37Speaker 4: up a quick first down and boom, we'll get back
- 21:39Speaker 4: to throwing the ball. Right when like second and one,
- 21:41Speaker 4: take a shot that's like the cleanest and when I said, like,
- 21:44Speaker 4: that's the most obvious opportunity to take a shot, all right,
- 21:47Speaker 4: Well the Bears are probably gonna sit on it and
- 21:49Speaker 4: fall back. Then he hit pop Douglas on an underneath
- 21:51Speaker 4: the cross and let him run with the ball in
- 21:52Speaker 4: his hands, like you have so much at your disposal
- 21:57Speaker 4: in that situation, if you're the Patriots twice. Yeah, and
- 22:00Speaker 4: they didn't take advantage.
- 22:01Speaker 2: Of I think your point about what their thought process
- 22:04Speaker 2: was was spot on. Yeah, it's second and one. The
- 22:07Speaker 2: opponent probably thinks we're going to try to take that shot,
- 22:10Speaker 2: so instead we're gonna hand it. Gun run, by the way,
- 22:13Speaker 2: is what they ran. We're gonna gun run, I think
- 22:16Speaker 2: it was with Jamichael Hasty, and maybe we pick up
- 22:20Speaker 2: a free eight yards on this gun run right here
- 22:23Speaker 2: gives us a new set of downs, and now we're
- 22:25Speaker 2: around midfield, and then maybe we'll take a shot when
- 22:27Speaker 2: we're around midfield.
- 22:29Speaker 4: I can hear all that.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And this is where execution versus process comes in, Like
- 22:34Speaker 2: if they pick up the blocks and they make that happen,
- 22:36Speaker 2: and we're probably not necessarily talking about it in this way.
- 22:40Speaker 2: I just philosophically, I just disagree with prioritizing the first
- 22:45Speaker 2: down there. I just don't agree that that is the
- 22:48Speaker 2: most important thing. I think the most important thing are
- 22:51Speaker 2: the clock in the field, position that you're in right
- 22:53Speaker 2: yards yards in the clock are the two things you
- 22:56Speaker 2: should be prioritizing there, not the first down. And the
- 23:00Speaker 2: last thing I want to say about this whole spiel
- 23:03Speaker 2: with the wind situation in overtime.
- 23:06Speaker 4: So I've been touched on that. It just can't There's
- 23:09Speaker 4: there's no way around it. Can't have it.
- 23:10Speaker 2: So I'm gonna draw it up, all right, I'm gonna
- 23:12Speaker 2: draw it up because I want to show everybody here
- 23:15Speaker 2: why I think that you.
- 23:17Speaker 4: Need like a sharpie or something that's not gonna show
- 23:18Speaker 4: up on a white piece of paper. I think it's
- 23:20Speaker 4: not gonna show up. Can we zoom in? Do we
- 23:22Speaker 4: have a sharpie back there? I want to get a water.
- 23:26Speaker 2: I want to show you guys if I can with
- 23:29Speaker 2: this sharpie. Hey, I'm gonna try. I personally, and look
- 23:34Speaker 2: I got I got pushed back from on PU for
- 23:38Speaker 2: this because it was a little bit of a homer
- 23:40Speaker 2: take a little bit of a drake, may take shocker.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I personally think that taking the wind or not or
- 23:50Speaker 2: whatever the heck we're talking about, failing to factor in
- 23:53Speaker 2: the wind, sure, failing the factor in the wind cost
- 23:59Speaker 2: the Patriots a walk off sixty yard touchdown in overtime.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Troy Brown and my uh, Tom Brady and Troy Brown
- 24:05Speaker 4: in Miami.
- 24:05Speaker 2: That was my if we consume it on this this
- 24:08Speaker 2: is the play call right there?
- 24:10Speaker 4: You go.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Okay, So these crossing routes here, this like little leak
- 24:14Speaker 2: out route into that flat, and this crossing route right
- 24:17Speaker 2: here right. The idea here is to hold the post
- 24:19Speaker 2: safety up here at the top of the screen. This
- 24:21Speaker 2: right up here at up top, that's a moni hooker
- 24:24Speaker 2: right like that. You didn't draw the defenders. I ran
- 24:27Speaker 2: out of space. Uh that that that's a moni hooker
- 24:29Speaker 2: right up here, right. So what you want to do
- 24:32Speaker 2: is what they're gonna do is they're gonna roll out
- 24:34Speaker 2: Drake May to his right.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Oh, this is in I thought that was the whole drawing. Okay,
- 24:38Speaker 4: this is in progress.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Okay, so we're gonna roll Drake May out to the right.
- 24:42Speaker 2: He's gonna roll out right, and then what he's gonna
- 24:44Speaker 2: do is he's gonna hope that this safety right up
- 24:47Speaker 2: top here amani hooker is going to follow him right
- 24:51Speaker 2: to the right, thinking that he's gonna throw this second
- 24:54Speaker 2: level crosser right here that I drew. Guess what happens.
- 24:58Speaker 2: He rolls to his right, The crosser runs to the right.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Where does a moni hooker go? He goes with Drake
- 25:03Speaker 2: May and the crossing ground. Kaishan Boody is now one
- 25:07Speaker 2: on one.
- 25:09Speaker 4: A little bit other way by the way, all right, whatever,
- 25:13Speaker 4: just keep going.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Kaishan Boudy now is one on one on the post
- 25:18Speaker 2: up top right. If Drake May who has a howitzer,
- 25:24Speaker 2: he's got a rocket and we know it, he can
- 25:26Speaker 2: launch it right this throw right here, the roll right
- 25:30Speaker 2: throw back to the post on the left. We have
- 25:32Speaker 2: watched every single quarterback for like five years make this
- 25:36Speaker 2: throw at his pro day.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Right. This is the pro day throw Wilson.
- 25:41Speaker 2: This is the Zach Wilson throw that's turned into every
- 25:43Speaker 2: single big arm quarterback making this throw in the pro day.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I am telling you right now, I've seen Drake May
- 25:48Speaker 2: make that throw a dozen times, a dozen times.
- 25:51Speaker 4: And what happens.
- 25:53Speaker 2: He rolls to his right, the ball gets caught up
- 25:56Speaker 2: there in the air, and all of a sudden, the
- 25:57Speaker 2: Moni hooker is on the other side fielding it like
- 25:59Speaker 2: a punt that didn't that's not Drake May. Right, Drake
- 26:03Speaker 2: May can get the ball there, no problem. So I
- 26:06Speaker 2: don't know if Kaishan Boody catches it. I don't know
- 26:08Speaker 2: if he if he, you know, doesn't get tackled right
- 26:11Speaker 2: by the corner that's covering him in coverage. Hey, it's
- 26:13Speaker 2: all possible, right, I'm telling you it's all possible. What
- 26:16Speaker 2: I'm telling you is that the wind made it ten
- 26:18Speaker 2: times harder for him to get the ball there than
- 26:20Speaker 2: it needed to be. If Drake May is throwing with
- 26:23Speaker 2: the wind at his back. I feel really, really strongly
- 26:27Speaker 2: that that play is completed to Kaishan Boody and we
- 26:30Speaker 2: were taught about a totally different game. And that's why
- 26:33Speaker 2: right there that the coaching staff, in my opinion, not
- 26:36Speaker 2: prioritizing the wind in that situation really cost them. And
- 26:39Speaker 2: that part of it is extremely frustrating because that is
- 26:43Speaker 2: in it's a controllable, right, there's things that you can't control,
- 26:47Speaker 2: and the things that you can't control that is a
- 26:49Speaker 2: controllable and the Patriot should have been on that. And
- 26:52Speaker 2: hopefully you guys could actually see what I drew up,
- 26:55Speaker 2: but enough people have posted it on Twitter. I don't
- 26:59Speaker 2: think that Kendrick Bourne falling down had as much of
- 27:02Speaker 2: a role in it. It obviously wasn't ideal. I'm not
- 27:05Speaker 2: in a Moni hooker's head like maybe it did play
- 27:08Speaker 2: a role, but it looked to me like he was
- 27:10Speaker 2: already opening to the post before Kendrick Bourne slipped down.
- 27:14Speaker 2: But obviously it could have been a factor on the play.
- 27:17Speaker 2: I think the wind was the biggest factor. I think
- 27:19Speaker 2: Drake May under throwing the ball deserves a little bit
- 27:21Speaker 2: of Christms as well, obviously, but the coaching staff, Again,
- 27:26Speaker 2: these are just things that are actively hurting the team.
- 27:29Speaker 2: And I really felt like watching it live, I felt
- 27:32Speaker 2: like watching it on film. Uh that Kaishan Boody was
- 27:35Speaker 2: open on the play, and I definitely think that Drake
- 27:38Speaker 2: May is capable of getting him the football there. And
- 27:40Speaker 2: I'm glad we did that. See a little drawing. What
- 27:43Speaker 2: do you what did you think about that, that whole situation. Yeah, regardless,
- 27:47Speaker 2: like you just got to be aware enough take the wind.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I'm with you, Like the ball definitely got caught up
- 27:51Speaker 2: as a complete I don't know, I'm but yeah, I
- 27:56Speaker 2: you things like that changed the game and the things
- 27:59Speaker 2: that people you know used to get bled a lot, right, No,
- 28:02Speaker 2: that it the win. Remember like when he took the bill,
- 28:06Speaker 2: took the win against against Denver and everybody thought, no,
- 28:09Speaker 2: these things impact the football game.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Not every time. You don't know how they're gonna do it,
- 28:13Speaker 4: But leave no stone unturned.
- 28:16Speaker 2: That was you know, look I were I'm gonna get
- 28:19Speaker 2: to Alex man Peltier in the second. I do think
- 28:21Speaker 2: there's some things that you can criticize him for, but
- 28:24Speaker 2: I really liked the intent of that play because to me,
- 28:29Speaker 2: that was, uh, let's go freaking win the game, right,
- 28:33Speaker 2: And like, I love that mindset. That's the mindset I
- 28:35Speaker 2: want Drake to have. That's the mindset I want the
- 28:37Speaker 2: team to have. Yeah, let's go win the f and game.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And unfortunately, the situation just didn't allow them to go
- 28:45Speaker 2: ahead and make that play happen the way that it should.
- 28:48Speaker 2: If you watch the play back, like a Moni hooker
- 28:50Speaker 2: is not there at first, right, he kind of drifts over,
- 28:54Speaker 2: just like I described, and he drifts back into the
- 28:56Speaker 2: middle of the field when he sees Drake May load up.
- 28:58Speaker 2: I don't think that he would have recovered to that
- 29:00Speaker 2: post as quickly as he needed to if the ball
- 29:04Speaker 2: had been thrown on the line, like Drake May could
- 29:06Speaker 2: throw it, and I know he's capable of throwing it.
- 29:09Speaker 2: I he feelded it like like it looked like Devin
- 29:11Speaker 2: mccordy picking off Zach Wilson, Like it was like an armbrunt. Yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 2: that that's not how Drake May throws a deep ball.
- 29:17Speaker 4: We all know that.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Uh so that part of it was was too bad
- 29:21Speaker 2: in terms of Drake May. I do want to talk
- 29:23Speaker 2: about the pros and cons. You're smiling over there a
- 29:26Speaker 2: lot of people. No, no, I just somebody send me
- 29:30Speaker 2: something drawing. I thought I did a good job.
- 29:32Speaker 4: You did do a good job with that. USF they
- 29:35Speaker 4: play at the Buck Stadium right now. Yeah, they're building
- 29:38Speaker 4: it on campus stadium. They just release the renderings.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Why is this what you're smiling?
- 29:43Speaker 4: Because if you're gonna make a rendering of your stadium,
- 29:46Speaker 4: why would you make that the score in the rendering?
- 29:49Speaker 4: It's twenty eight three? What do they have? What's that
- 29:52Speaker 4: have to do with anything? Why would you pick the
- 29:54Speaker 4: most like? Why would you use that score?
- 29:56Speaker 2: What does use USF care about twenty eight to three?
- 29:59Speaker 4: Everybody knows what twenty eight three is. Why would you
- 30:01Speaker 4: put yourself up twenty eight three? You're inviting jokes, people like,
- 30:04Speaker 4: I'm smiling because some people are sending me twenty eight
- 30:06Speaker 4: three jokes.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Oh my god, this is a sick o thing, is yes?
- 30:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah?
- 30:10Speaker 4: Oh yeah?
- 30:11Speaker 2: Okay, all right, all right, Calm down over there, Okay,
- 30:15Speaker 2: I want to talk about Drake may I know I
- 30:18Speaker 2: just said that he probably would have hit a sixty
- 30:20Speaker 2: five yard touchdown if it wasn't for the wind. That
- 30:22Speaker 2: probably sounds like a excuse me, a giant excuse uh.
- 30:27Speaker 2: I had all three of the turnovers in this game
- 30:29Speaker 2: at least partially on him, if not fully on him.
- 30:33Speaker 2: I think the first one is just obvious, right, I mean,
- 30:36Speaker 2: it's just.
- 30:36Speaker 4: A bad play.
- 30:37Speaker 2: It's a mac Jones esque interception just can't happen. The
- 30:41Speaker 2: fumble God to have a better internal clock and better
- 30:44Speaker 2: pocket awareness than that, especially because he starts on the
- 30:47Speaker 2: left side of the field when his eyes are on
- 30:50Speaker 2: the left side of the field, like he should be
- 30:52Speaker 2: able to see out of the corner of his eye
- 30:54Speaker 2: that arden Key is getting around Vederian low right, like
- 30:57Speaker 2: that should be in his peripheral vision and he should
- 31:00Speaker 2: be able to spot that happening. I do think he
- 31:04Speaker 2: was trying to underhand it to Jamichael Hasty, So the
- 31:07Speaker 2: underhand early on in the game that worked to Ramandra
- 31:09Speaker 2: Stevenson might have kind of give him a false sense
- 31:12Speaker 2: of security a little bit to try that sort of thing,
- 31:15Speaker 2: And so instead of, you know, getting two hands on
- 31:17Speaker 2: the football and protecting the football. He tried to lateral
- 31:20Speaker 2: it out to hasty wasn't the best decision. And then
- 31:24Speaker 2: obviously the picking in overtime too was an underthrown maybe
- 31:28Speaker 2: a little bit late on the pass as well. The
- 31:31Speaker 2: thing that I would say with Drake though, on top
- 31:34Speaker 2: of the fact that I think that he's on the hole,
- 31:37Speaker 2: I had him with like sixteen plus plays in this game,
- 31:40Speaker 2: which is a really high number, really good number.
- 31:43Speaker 4: I think on the hole.
- 31:43Speaker 2: He's playing very very well outside of the turnovers. But
- 31:47Speaker 2: what I see with Drake a lot right now, and
- 31:49Speaker 2: the scrambles I think backed this up. I thought all
- 31:52Speaker 2: of eight of his scrambles in this game were legitimate scrambles,
- 31:55Speaker 2: meaning he wasn't hit in the top of the drop
- 31:57Speaker 2: and leaving early or missing open receivers and running instead.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Like it wasn't the young quarterback stuff that sometimes you
- 32:04Speaker 2: hear about or you see about. What I'm seeing a
- 32:07Speaker 2: lot with Drake, and the numbers back this up. He's
- 32:10Speaker 2: one of the best quarterbacks in the league out of structure.
- 32:12Speaker 2: He's one of the best scrambling and running quarterbacks in
- 32:15Speaker 2: the league. Already like three and a half starts into
- 32:18Speaker 2: his NFL career, but right now they're way too reliant
- 32:22Speaker 2: on him being Superman. And when you force your young
- 32:25Speaker 2: quarterback to play like Superman and drop back to pass
- 32:29Speaker 2: fifty three times, then you're gonna have some negative plays
- 32:31Speaker 2: on top of the positive plays, and they're gonna be
- 32:33Speaker 2: turnovers and there's gonna be issues. So I bring into
- 32:38Speaker 2: a question a lot of things, and you know, the
- 32:40Speaker 2: scheme I think is one of them, Like I think
- 32:42Speaker 2: too much of the scheme right now is just like
- 32:47Speaker 2: you know, f it, Drake, go do something right, like
- 32:49Speaker 2: go go, go make a play kid, And I.
- 32:52Speaker 4: Think he's starting to internalize that, which is where you
- 32:55Speaker 4: get into this conversation of worrying about bad habits. Like yeah,
- 32:58Speaker 4: tweeted this after the game. Everything about Drake May's approach
- 33:05Speaker 4: right now screams an internal to me, screams an internal
- 33:09Speaker 4: dialogue of I guess I'll have to do it myself.
- 33:12Speaker 4: And I kind of understand why he feels that way.
- 33:15Speaker 4: You have receivers dropping balls left and right, the offensive
- 33:17Speaker 4: line can't block the play callings a little vanilla eight.
- 33:21Speaker 4: I sort of get why he feels like that and look,
- 33:23Speaker 4: you drafted the kid third overall, Like you do want
- 33:27Speaker 4: him to carry your offense, absolutely, but as a rookie
- 33:30Speaker 4: to do it to this extent, it's gonna create a
- 33:33Speaker 4: very volatile situation. And you've seen very volatile play. There's
- 33:37Speaker 4: been some incredibly high highs. But he has turned the
- 33:39Speaker 4: ball over six times in essentially three games.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Yeah, so he just has the highest turnover where the
- 33:45Speaker 2: play right in the NFL, right right, So like.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Look, long term, the help should be coming and we
- 33:52Speaker 4: can do DK Metcalf, T Higgins, Will Campbell, whatever we
- 33:55Speaker 4: do that to the cows come home. Those guys aren't
- 33:58Speaker 4: getting here for a couple more months at least, So
- 34:01Speaker 4: you to me right now, they need to find a way,
- 34:04Speaker 4: work with him to find a way. And this is
- 34:06Speaker 4: where we get into the Josh Allen of it all.
- 34:09Speaker 4: Where I get it. He's never gonna be a traditional
- 34:12Speaker 4: drop back, three step, hit the back foot, get it
- 34:14Speaker 4: out passer. Turnovers are always going to be a point
- 34:17Speaker 4: of his game, a part of his game. He's never
- 34:18Speaker 4: gonna play the cleanest quarterback game ever. But you live
- 34:21Speaker 4: with it because of some of the things he can
- 34:23Speaker 4: do out of structure. But you don't want him mentally
- 34:28Speaker 4: becoming so reliant on again, And I guess I'll just
- 34:31Speaker 4: have to do it myself, right, And is there a
- 34:35Speaker 4: way they can take some of the load off of
- 34:37Speaker 4: him with the way things exist right now, to just
- 34:41Speaker 4: get to the end of the year without again making
- 34:45Speaker 4: him do too much? At some point the offense is
- 34:48Speaker 4: gonna be built significantly around him, saysn't. He's saying, you
- 34:50Speaker 4: got it, you can't let the kid do anything, But
- 34:53Speaker 4: it's there's there's too much on the plate right now,
- 34:55Speaker 4: there's too much.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's a great way of putting it, like,
- 34:58Speaker 2: how do we get through the next seven was it
- 35:01Speaker 2: nine games? Seven games?
- 35:03Speaker 4: Nine game played? Nine? They played nine? So eight eight games?
- 35:06Speaker 2: Bad at math?
- 35:07Speaker 4: How can we don't do math?
- 35:08Speaker 5: On?
- 35:08Speaker 2: How can we get through the next eight games with
- 35:11Speaker 2: him having Yeah.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I was gonna answer the question.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Oh, with him developing good habits and making plays, but
- 35:19Speaker 2: not having him default to playground mode so often.
- 35:23Speaker 4: One way, there's a couples. One way start running the football.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Well, start right, Like that's that's I've I feel like
- 35:30Speaker 2: that's something that they've always wanted to do. But that's like,
- 35:33Speaker 2: you know, well, easier said than done.
- 35:35Speaker 4: He's their leading rusher since he took over as the starter,
- 35:37Speaker 4: and he only played a quarter of one of those games.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Not only is he their leading rusher Evans since Week six,
- 35:43Speaker 4: he has more rushing yards than everybody else combined by
- 35:47Speaker 4: like fifty. Like part of it I think right now
- 35:51Speaker 4: is teams are just they're not They can key in
- 35:56Speaker 4: on him so much because there's no run game, and
- 35:59Speaker 4: that's only gonna get worse. I think the quickest way
- 36:02Speaker 4: out of this is to start establishing the run.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Yeah, so a lot of those lines. I think my
- 36:07Speaker 2: biggest complaint right now with Van Pelt is that the
- 36:13Speaker 2: offense to me is way too We're going to force
- 36:17Speaker 2: Drake into our scheme versus we're going to cater the
- 36:20Speaker 2: scheme to Drake, and there's got to be some sort
- 36:23Speaker 2: of balance.
- 36:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think.
- 36:25Speaker 2: I'm not one of these people that thinks that should
- 36:27Speaker 2: be one hundred percent just everything that Drake wants to
- 36:29Speaker 2: do or that's best for Drake, because way I look
- 36:33Speaker 2: at it, and I think this is gonna I don't
- 36:37Speaker 2: know one hundred but I'm curious about how this goes
- 36:40Speaker 2: with Jayden Daniels because I think right now, the scheme
- 36:44Speaker 2: that Cliff Kingsbury is running in Washington for Jaden Daniels
- 36:47Speaker 2: is very much basically just LSU's offense. Like they're basically
- 36:52Speaker 2: just running LSU's offense at a pro level. And more
- 36:57Speaker 2: times than not, maybe with Jayden Daniels it will just
- 37:00Speaker 2: won't happen and he just transcends this. But more times
- 37:03Speaker 2: than not, the league catches up to that kind of thing, right,
- 37:05Speaker 2: you know, they'll catch up to it. So eventually you
- 37:08Speaker 2: have to play a traditional quarterback, like you have to
- 37:11Speaker 2: play drop back quarterback, and it's not all gonna be
- 37:14Speaker 2: bells and whistles, and it's not all gonna be college
- 37:16Speaker 2: offense and RPO and zone read and all that kind
- 37:20Speaker 2: of stuff. With that being said, it's it would be
- 37:22Speaker 2: nice to dabble in that kind of thing. And especially
- 37:26Speaker 2: because their traditional run games going nowhere, and therefore, i
- 37:30Speaker 2: as Van Pelt told us today, their play action passing
- 37:32Speaker 2: game is going nowhere. The Patriots, in my mind, need
- 37:35Speaker 2: to be more creative on first and second down, and
- 37:39Speaker 2: the way to be creative, if you ask me, and
- 37:42Speaker 2: I've kind of flip flopped on this because I sort
- 37:44Speaker 2: of heard last week what Van Pelt was saying about
- 37:48Speaker 2: incorporating more design runs for Drake May in the offense
- 37:53Speaker 2: and how it was gonna leave him vulnerable to even
- 37:56Speaker 2: more body blows than what he's already being susceptible to.
- 38:00Speaker 2: But I think you almost have to to create some
- 38:04Speaker 2: more easy offense on first and second down. And let's
- 38:06Speaker 2: not lose sight of the fact that just because he
- 38:09Speaker 2: has the option to run on his zone read or
- 38:12Speaker 2: the option to run on an RPO doesn't necessarily mean
- 38:16Speaker 2: he has to run. And a lot of it is
- 38:19Speaker 2: just eye candy or just sort of gravity for the
- 38:21Speaker 2: defense that if you're running a zone read, like you
- 38:25Speaker 2: have to respect the backside with the quarterback, Like you
- 38:28Speaker 2: can't just crash down on the running back because he
- 38:31Speaker 2: has a threat there to keep it. Or maybe there's
- 38:34Speaker 2: like a slant coming into the window for a linebacker
- 38:37Speaker 2: and you have to make that decision. Am I going
- 38:39Speaker 2: to crash into the hole and into the line of
- 38:41Speaker 2: scrimmage here or am I gonna play the pass? And
- 38:44Speaker 2: those types of things just open up space for whether
- 38:48Speaker 2: it's a throw, a pass, a run for the quarterback
- 38:50Speaker 2: or run for the running back. So seeing more of
- 38:53Speaker 2: that kind of stuff I think is almost a must
- 38:56Speaker 2: because their offense right now, in my mind, is too
- 39:00Speaker 2: drop back centric, and it's too difficult for them to
- 39:03Speaker 2: execute consistently, not just for Drake, but also for the
- 39:07Speaker 2: pieces around it, Like you need receivers to run good
- 39:09Speaker 2: routes and get open, and spacing and timing and rhythm
- 39:13Speaker 2: and offensive line to pass protect, and like all these
- 39:16Speaker 2: things need to marry together for them to execute plays
- 39:19Speaker 2: after play after play after play. And there's just a
- 39:21Speaker 2: lot on Drake's shoulders to make that happen right now.
- 39:25Speaker 2: And that's why every you know, ten five, I think
- 39:28Speaker 2: it's five point seven percent of the time an overworthy play,
- 39:31Speaker 2: which is a high number. So I love in the
- 39:35Speaker 2: past what we've seen, you know, with these types of quarterbacks.
- 39:39Speaker 2: I call him Philly style RPOs. I love the Eagles
- 39:43Speaker 2: RPO package. I think it's one of the best the
- 39:45Speaker 2: league has ever seen. In Philly style RPOs, there are
- 39:49Speaker 2: three options. He can hand the ball off, he can
- 39:52Speaker 2: run it himself, or he can throw it. It's the
- 39:55Speaker 2: modern day triple options. Yeah, and it's almost like three.
- 40:00Speaker 2: It's it's almost like two separate plays in one where
- 40:03Speaker 2: the inside handoff is kind of the first play this
- 40:06Speaker 2: and then the second play is run or pass for
- 40:08Speaker 2: the quarterback once he decides to keep the football and
- 40:11Speaker 2: he sort of gets on the edge and has some space.
- 40:14Speaker 2: We've seen Jalen Hurts really be the best at it,
- 40:16Speaker 2: but other teams have run this with mobile quarterbacks, especially
- 40:19Speaker 2: young ones. You know, Anthony Richardson's like those types.
- 40:22Speaker 4: Of it's all over college football.
- 40:24Speaker 2: This is so you know, you give him like it's
- 40:28Speaker 2: like you know, usually the Eagles like to run like
- 40:31Speaker 2: curl flat or you know, stick or whatever, where it's
- 40:34Speaker 2: just like a slant you know, or a curl route
- 40:37Speaker 2: right with a little flat attached to it on the
- 40:40Speaker 2: back side of the play, and then he reads the
- 40:42Speaker 2: defender you know, on that side of the field to
- 40:45Speaker 2: determine whether he's going to give it to the back
- 40:47Speaker 2: or he's going to keep it, and then he has
- 40:49Speaker 2: all sorts of options, you know, all over the place.
- 40:52Speaker 2: That's not a traditional West Coast offense thing like that's
- 40:56Speaker 2: not a Shanahan Tree Stefanski, you know, McVeigh laflor, Like,
- 41:01Speaker 2: they don't really run that kind of stuff conventionally. But
- 41:04Speaker 2: when you can't conventionally run the football, this is the
- 41:08Speaker 2: way that you sort of unlock your early down offense.
- 41:11Speaker 2: And I feel like that's something that Drake's done in
- 41:13Speaker 2: the past at North Carolina. I think it's something that
- 41:16Speaker 2: he'd be comfortable with doing. And it also allows him
- 41:19Speaker 2: to just be an athlete out there, and it sort
- 41:20Speaker 2: of simplifies reads for him and things like that. I'm
- 41:24Speaker 2: not saying that has to be their entire early down offense,
- 41:27Speaker 2: but I definitely think that would help their early down offense.
- 41:31Speaker 2: And and then you save the good drop back plays
- 41:33Speaker 2: for third down and and maybe mitigate how often you
- 41:36Speaker 2: have to actually go to your drop back game because
- 41:38Speaker 2: right now, to me, it's not just that they're passing
- 41:41Speaker 2: a lot, it's that they're dropping back a lot. Like
- 41:44Speaker 2: there's no play action, there's no bells and whistles to
- 41:48Speaker 2: what they're dropping in emotion of screen. Right it's all
- 41:52Speaker 2: just Drake to id coverage, read it out receivers to
- 41:57Speaker 2: get open blockers to block like, it's all just on execution. Then,
- 42:00Speaker 2: at that point, and we know that they have a
- 42:02Speaker 2: talent gap disadvantage a lot of weeks that's said, all right, Uh,
- 42:07Speaker 2: is there anything else on Drake that I wanted to
- 42:09Speaker 2: get to.
- 42:10Speaker 4: I say again, like I'll give the other side of it,
- 42:13Speaker 4: because I know how you view them, Like the turnovers
- 42:16Speaker 4: do need to come down, Yeah, the turnovers do.
- 42:19Speaker 2: But this to me, like that's why I'm talking about
- 42:21Speaker 2: this kind of stuff because I think the turnovers are
- 42:24Speaker 2: happening at such a high volume because of the high
- 42:27Speaker 2: volume of throws that he's making. I get that, but
- 42:30Speaker 2: but the fumbles things like that, like this is a
- 42:32Speaker 2: Bears defense that does turn the ball over in the
- 42:34Speaker 2: mount This would be a good week for him to show.
- 42:37Speaker 4: And because I see people say, how can you say
- 42:39Speaker 4: he played well? He turned the ball over three times?
- 42:41Speaker 4: And this goes back to what I said at the beginning,
- 42:44Speaker 4: I'm not his plays surpassed my expectations a little bit.
- 42:48Speaker 4: I thought there'd be a little bit more of a
- 42:49Speaker 4: learning curve than this. But I expected you're going to
- 42:51Speaker 4: see some really impressive, high level, big time throws and
- 42:53Speaker 4: you're gonna see some turnovers. If he's still turning the
- 42:56Speaker 4: ball over like this in January, I'm gonna be pretty worried.
- 42:59Speaker 4: Yeah he's still turn next year, just even next year,
- 43:03Speaker 4: I think, just because of the supporting, because of the talent.
- 43:05Speaker 4: But like the way he's turning the ball over is
- 43:07Speaker 4: not sustainable. It me be clear about it.
- 43:09Speaker 2: I would say the reason why they're losing games is
- 43:11Speaker 2: because he's turned.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Because yeah, I'm with doing that. It's not sustainable. But
- 43:16Speaker 4: he's four starts into his career. There were no expectations
- 43:19Speaker 4: of them making the Super Bowls here, but you gotta
- 43:22Speaker 4: see signs of improvement. You opened up by talking about, well,
- 43:24Speaker 4: what was this season really about? Do they a franchise quarterback?
- 43:28Speaker 4: I would add to that as a whole, especially from
- 43:30Speaker 4: the quarterback and the coaching staff, the quarterback, the people
- 43:34Speaker 4: you want to be here beyond this year. So you
- 43:37Speaker 4: can also throw in guys like Christian Zales. Yeah, you
- 43:39Speaker 4: can throw in a guy like like uh White, the
- 43:43Speaker 4: young receivers even like even the guys that aren't playing
- 43:46Speaker 4: well but ideally are part of this core moving forward.
- 43:50Speaker 4: And Alex van Pelt is a big part of this too.
- 43:52Speaker 4: Are you better in December and January than you were
- 43:55Speaker 4: in September? That doesn't mean it has to look great,
- 43:58Speaker 4: but is it? And the growth isn't gonna be linear.
- 44:00Speaker 4: Maybe two steps forward, one step back, but like, at
- 44:02Speaker 4: the end of the day, are they better at the
- 44:04Speaker 4: end of the year than they are now. So Drake
- 44:06Speaker 4: being where he is right now, the turnovers are concerning,
- 44:09Speaker 4: but fine, cut them down. Same thing for Alex man Pelt.
- 44:12Speaker 4: I do understand to an extent if the offense is
- 44:16Speaker 4: a little more stripped down at this point because you're
- 44:18Speaker 4: trying to ease the kid in. Yeah, you can't run
- 44:21Speaker 4: a striped down offense for twelve games, right, so it's
- 44:24Speaker 4: been four so far. I don't as I've seen some
- 44:26Speaker 4: people talk about the play calling, and you just kind
- 44:28Speaker 4: of talked about it. If the planner early was we're
- 44:31Speaker 4: gonna keep it pretty black and white for him through
- 44:33Speaker 4: the first month, just to get him going. I understand that.
- 44:36Speaker 4: I know it's frustrated to watch. I understand that. I
- 44:38Speaker 4: don't think he like, Okay, he's checked the box for
- 44:41Speaker 4: the black and white stuff. Let's start mixing in some color, right,
- 44:45Speaker 4: Let's let's let's let's get the So my question is
- 44:47Speaker 4: I agree with you like my it's I feel like,
- 44:50Speaker 4: and I'm not trying to pick on anybody, but like,
- 44:53Speaker 4: I feel like some people harp way too much on
- 44:55Speaker 4: the actual sequencing of play calls, Like I think that's important.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Oh, he like runs the ball too much on first down,
- 45:01Speaker 2: or my bigger problem with Van Pelt right now is
- 45:05Speaker 2: play design, right, which are two different things, like what
- 45:08Speaker 2: are the actual designs or the concepts that you're running
- 45:12Speaker 2: in this offense and for this offense, because I'll just
- 45:16Speaker 2: give you another example that's not even Drake related, like
- 45:19Speaker 2: they're running a ton of outside zone still, yeah, and
- 45:21Speaker 2: I just don't think they have the horses up front,
- 45:24Speaker 2: or I don't really think that it fits for ma
- 45:25Speaker 2: Andre Stevenson all that well to be so outside zone.
- 45:29Speaker 4: So just let me see it develop, like, let me
- 45:32Speaker 4: see it progressively get better as the year goes on.
- 45:34Speaker 4: That's kind of what I'm looking for here. And you know,
- 45:36Speaker 4: it's a good week to start it. You know, he
- 45:38Speaker 4: had the first two starts. Are they gonna start ramping up?
- 45:40Speaker 4: He gets hurt, he didn't have a full week of
- 45:42Speaker 4: practice last week. Okay, Like he's good, And it'd be
- 45:46Speaker 4: great if I could say they have an offensive line set. Unfortunately,
- 45:49Speaker 4: we might not be able to say that.
- 45:50Speaker 2: He is Van Pelt capable of designing an offense that
- 45:57Speaker 2: factors in Drake's mobility, because.
- 45:59Speaker 4: It's just in just evolving the offense as a whole.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yeah, because right now I feel like Drake's mobility is
- 46:05Speaker 2: all out of structure, right it's all scrambles on drop back,
- 46:08Speaker 2: And the problem with that is that it's not really
- 46:13Speaker 2: yet and maybe it will in terms of game plan
- 46:15Speaker 2: and like now we have to rush him differently, or we.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Have to spy him or aren't spying yea, or even
- 46:20Speaker 4: already that that's.
- 46:21Speaker 2: A factor, but it's not building his mobility into the offense.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Like building his mobility into the offense is the stuff
- 46:29Speaker 2: that I was just talking about with Philly or what
- 46:31Speaker 2: the Washington commanders are doing with Jayden Daniels. That's using
- 46:35Speaker 2: his mobility as like a trump card, no pun intended, right,
- 46:40Speaker 2: Like that's that ability there.
- 46:41Speaker 4: And like I said last week, I agree with the
- 46:43Speaker 4: general consensus of we don't want to overrun him because
- 46:46Speaker 4: we don't want the physical toll. Like yeah, I'm I'm
- 46:49Speaker 4: all for airing on the side of run him not
- 46:53Speaker 4: enough first, run him too much. But they have some
- 46:56Speaker 4: room before they even get to like they're not even
- 46:59Speaker 4: close I think to that line right now, they can
- 47:01Speaker 4: afford to get a little closer to that line.
- 47:03Speaker 2: I think he'd run less, Like I really do, because
- 47:06Speaker 2: I don't think that it would always be it. You
- 47:10Speaker 2: think it's own read and you think of like Lamar
- 47:12Speaker 2: Jackson running the ball like in a game ten to
- 47:13Speaker 2: fifteen times, like in a playoff game or something like that,
- 47:17Speaker 2: But I don't think that would necessarily be the case.
- 47:19Speaker 2: It's more just threatening the defense and making the defense
- 47:22Speaker 2: respect the fact that Drake Mays has the athleticism to
- 47:27Speaker 2: to make you pay on a run like that, and
- 47:29Speaker 2: it doesn't have to. Like last week, I watched the
- 47:32Speaker 2: Cardinals Bears game right on film. The Cardinals ran for
- 47:35Speaker 2: two hundred and thirteen yards against this Bard's defense, who
- 47:39Speaker 2: are terrible against the run, which we'll get to later
- 47:42Speaker 2: in the show. But they ran for two hundred and
- 47:44Speaker 2: thirteen yards on the ground. We want to guess how
- 47:46Speaker 2: many of them were by Kyler Murray? A lot six
- 47:51Speaker 2: oh six.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Yes, So you should be able to run the ball
- 47:54Speaker 4: this week.
- 47:55Speaker 2: So Kyler Murray ran for six yards in the entire game.
- 47:59Speaker 2: But Kyler Murray's legs are factors on these plays that
- 48:03Speaker 2: they're running, right, Like his threat of being able to
- 48:05Speaker 2: keep the football is a factor, but he's not actually
- 48:08Speaker 2: going out there and literally keeping the football, So I
- 48:11Speaker 2: think that that's big and it will help him, I believe,
- 48:16Speaker 2: cut down on turnovers and cut down on some of
- 48:18Speaker 2: the mistakes because it's a different type of offense, right
- 48:21Speaker 2: It's an unconventional type of offense. I just think their
- 48:24Speaker 2: offense is too old school right now for what they have.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Personnel wise, you got it, there's got to be some
- 48:31Speaker 2: more creativity and some more bells and whistles to what
- 48:34Speaker 2: they're doing, and there just.
- 48:36Speaker 4: Isn't right now.
- 48:36Speaker 2: And you have a young quarterback as now trying to
- 48:38Speaker 2: read through progressions and id coverage and keep himself protected
- 48:42Speaker 2: and all these different types of things. I don't blame
- 48:44Speaker 2: him for just defaulting to running on some of these
- 48:47Speaker 2: plays because it's like nobody's open the line, I got
- 48:51Speaker 2: pressure coming off the left side, Like what else am
- 48:53Speaker 2: I gonna do here?
- 48:54Speaker 4: Like I'm just gonna run?
- 48:55Speaker 2: And I get where his head is at with all
- 48:57Speaker 2: of that, and I think managing it almost helps, Like
- 49:02Speaker 2: I think incorporating it into the offense almost helps him
- 49:06Speaker 2: manage scrambling, Like, well.
- 49:08Speaker 4: How it makes sense? Do it less?
- 49:10Speaker 2: The last thing I want to say about Drake May
- 49:12Speaker 2: and then we can do three up, three down and
- 49:13Speaker 2: open up the phone lines and the emails. The big
- 49:17Speaker 2: thing that I was really impressed with and have been
- 49:20Speaker 2: impressed with throughout is his ability right now to throw
- 49:25Speaker 2: in in the pocket is better maybe that I expect.
- 49:28Speaker 2: This might be the one area where I'm actually I
- 49:31Speaker 2: think that was maybe exceeding expectations. I would say below expect.
- 49:37Speaker 2: I did not expect him to turn the ball over
- 49:39Speaker 2: this much. He didn't play like this in college.
- 49:44Speaker 4: Anymore.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair.
- 49:46Speaker 4: He's in the AFC, so it's close. But that's fair.
- 49:49Speaker 4: That's the bills.
- 49:50Speaker 2: But you know, in terms of the one thing that
- 49:52Speaker 2: I think might be a little bit better than expected
- 49:54Speaker 2: is you know, just some of the completions for example
- 49:57Speaker 2: to Hunter Henry in this game, where like they bring
- 50:00Speaker 2: pressure and he just knows exactly where he's going with
- 50:03Speaker 2: the football to beat pressure. You know, sighted just hot
- 50:06Speaker 2: wrote boom ball is out like top of the drop
- 50:09Speaker 2: on time, really iding you know, pressure and rotation really well.
- 50:14Speaker 2: That type of stuff is is is pretty next level
- 50:17Speaker 2: for a young quarterback to be doing that kind of
- 50:21Speaker 2: stuff already is really impressive. The fourth down throw it
- 50:25Speaker 2: the gotta have it for it down late in the
- 50:26Speaker 2: game to Hunter Henry, Like, that's conventional from the p offense.
- 50:31Speaker 2: That's not the last play of the fourth quarter right
- 50:33Speaker 2: where he's running around like a crazy person. That that's
- 50:37Speaker 2: a really good, nice conventional player. I thought he made
- 50:39Speaker 2: a really great throw, not the crossing route, not the
- 50:43Speaker 2: highlight throw, but the one to pop Douglas on the
- 50:45Speaker 2: little out out of empty where he kind of dropped
- 50:48Speaker 2: the arm angle a little bit and just sort of
- 50:49Speaker 2: put it out there for him.
- 50:51Speaker 4: A really nice throw.
- 50:52Speaker 2: Like those are the conventional offense types of throws that
- 50:55Speaker 2: give you a lot of positive vibes about Drake. All right,
- 50:58Speaker 2: did you do three up?
- 50:59Speaker 4: Three down? I did two and four?
- 51:01Speaker 2: But yes, you did it though I did it, all right,
- 51:03Speaker 2: you go.
- 51:04Speaker 4: I've been doing it like I do it every week.
- 51:06Speaker 4: I don't know why this is a thing. First up,
- 51:09Speaker 4: it's gonna sound weird. Ramandre Stevenson, outside of what he
- 51:13Speaker 4: like the running game, is struggling as a whole again.
- 51:17Speaker 4: He is I think seventy six yards total in the
- 51:21Speaker 4: last three weeks, eighty three before contact or eighty three
- 51:26Speaker 4: after contact. Yeah, so we're still on this thing where
- 51:31Speaker 4: he's getting hit behind the line of scrimmage regularly. I
- 51:35Speaker 4: think he's doing as much as he can. But when
- 51:37Speaker 4: you look at what he did catching the football, when
- 51:39Speaker 4: you look at what he did as a pass protector,
- 51:41Speaker 4: Drake had that one scramble late. Was it on the
- 51:43Speaker 4: final drive of regulation or an overtime where it should
- 51:46Speaker 4: have been like a three or four yard scramble, gets
- 51:49Speaker 4: out in front, set a nice block in overtime and
- 51:51Speaker 4: it ends up being like I think, a fifteen yard gain.
- 51:54Speaker 4: Vermondra Stevens his usage rates up over fifty percent, Like
- 51:57Speaker 4: he's still doing a ton for them, And I know
- 52:00Speaker 4: people are gonna roll their eyes. How are you having
- 52:02Speaker 4: a running back when they can't run the ball. They
- 52:04Speaker 4: need to run the football better. I don't if we
- 52:06Speaker 4: were to list the biggest issues with their inability to
- 52:09Speaker 4: run the ball, I don't know that ramondra Stevenson in
- 52:11Speaker 4: the top three right now. Like he's doing his part,
- 52:14Speaker 4: He's doing as much as he can. He's finding other
- 52:17Speaker 4: ways to contribute. He was good for them in this game. Yeah.
- 52:21Speaker 4: I agree.
- 52:21Speaker 2: The play the underhand flip. We talked about it deefly earlier.
- 52:25Speaker 2: That's just a great individual play by Ramondre Stevenson too,
- 52:29Speaker 2: Like it's a great play by Drake obviously as well,
- 52:32Speaker 2: but he takes out the blitzing linebacker, chops down. The
- 52:35Speaker 2: blitzing linebacker gets back up off the ground after chopping
- 52:39Speaker 2: the guy down, makes himself available to the quarterback and
- 52:42Speaker 2: is the outlet for Drake may on the play with
- 52:44Speaker 2: under pressure like that. That's a really heads up play
- 52:47Speaker 2: by him too, And obviously the touchdown at the end
- 52:49Speaker 2: of regulations are really heads up play by him as well,
- 52:52Speaker 2: and just a good play just to box out the
- 52:54Speaker 2: guy and make the catch. So I understand where you're
- 52:57Speaker 2: coming from with Vermandre. I just mentioned him. My number
- 53:00Speaker 2: one up again was Hunter Henry. I just think that
- 53:02Speaker 2: he's been one of their best players overall this season.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Seven catches on eight targets fifty six yards, just whenever
- 53:09Speaker 2: they really need to have it, you know, the fourth
- 53:11Speaker 2: down play I just mentioned earlier that now was the
- 53:14Speaker 2: Hunter Henry. A couple of really good throws over the
- 53:17Speaker 2: middle against blitzes where he's just right where he needs
- 53:20Speaker 2: to be, right where the quarterback is expecting him to
- 53:23Speaker 2: be an on time. Just such a quarterback as best
- 53:26Speaker 2: friend type of player for a young QB. I just
- 53:29Speaker 2: think that if I had to rank the Patriots' best
- 53:32Speaker 2: players on the year. I might have Hunter Henry as
- 53:36Speaker 2: their best overall player right now. He's certainly been pretty
- 53:39Speaker 2: much the only consistent on offense.
- 53:41Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's saying something. Yeah, he was good in
- 53:43Speaker 4: this game. He's been really good. Yep. Next again, this
- 53:46Speaker 4: is gonna sound weird to some people. Jilawnie tovai better
- 53:48Speaker 4: game is the second game. He did have one play.
- 53:52Speaker 4: He had two plays where he got shook out of
- 53:54Speaker 4: his shoes. One of them ended up coming back on
- 53:55Speaker 4: a penalty, but made a couple stops against the run,
- 53:58Speaker 4: was all over the field, made nice play on that interception. Yeah.
- 54:01Speaker 4: I just it's trending in the right direction with him,
- 54:03Speaker 4: which is good because that I don't know that that
- 54:06Speaker 4: totally fixes the defense, but that would be a big help.
- 54:08Speaker 4: If he can start getting comfortable more off the ball.
- 54:10Speaker 4: I didn't think we were going to see that either,
- 54:11Speaker 4: but he's starting to look more comfortable in that role.
- 54:14Speaker 4: So encouraging sign that he's maybe starting to turn.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Down Definitely better, Definitely a step in the right direction.
- 54:19Speaker 2: I thought he gave up some plays too in this game.
- 54:21Speaker 2: Thirty two yarder on the fort opening drive.
- 54:23Speaker 4: It was a little bit him.
- 54:24Speaker 2: I gave up a twenty four yard catch and coverage,
- 54:27Speaker 2: but he also made some more splash plays this week,
- 54:29Speaker 2: so he.
- 54:30Speaker 4: Shouldn't be incoverage. Like, I just don't necessarily fault him
- 54:33Speaker 4: for that because he is not a player that should
- 54:34Speaker 4: be in coverage.
- 54:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't blame him for it that much either.
- 54:38Speaker 2: My next one, you're not going to believe this. I
- 54:40Speaker 2: went with special teams Marcus Jones. I thought Marcus Jones,
- 54:45Speaker 2: his forty yard return and his twenty five yard return
- 54:48Speaker 2: both set up scoring drives for the Patriots without that
- 54:51Speaker 2: twenty five yard return at the end of regulation that
- 54:54Speaker 2: got them to the fifty yard line and started that
- 54:56Speaker 2: drive in plus field position. Like, I don't know if
- 54:58Speaker 2: they score on that drive.
- 55:00Speaker 4: Talk about in a game that had its share of
- 55:02Speaker 4: dumb coaching decisions. Yeah, hunting the pall the Marcus Jones
- 55:05Speaker 4: right there. It's not quite Matt Dodge DeShawn Jackson Raclet
- 55:09Speaker 4: to metal Life, but there's some similarity.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Yeah, what the hell was Brian Callahan thing? Yeah, No,
- 55:15Speaker 2: it was a He was impactful on returns in this game,
- 55:19Speaker 2: and he's a weapon. He's a weapon. He's on the
- 55:22Speaker 2: list right now for me, you know, not not a
- 55:24Speaker 2: ton of guys that really deserve Pro Bowl, you know,
- 55:28Speaker 2: sort of recognition or potential. But right now, I know
- 55:31Speaker 2: Cliff Raymond's having a huge return season for Detroit. But
- 55:34Speaker 2: if Marcus Jones mixes in a return touchdown here at
- 55:37Speaker 2: some point, I think he has a really good chance
- 55:40Speaker 2: of being a Pro Bowl returner. Yeah, all right, who's
- 55:42Speaker 2: got you got one more?
- 55:44Speaker 4: No? You only did two? All right, honorable mention for me,
- 55:47Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 55:47Speaker 2: I always say fully up, just because it's hard to
- 55:50Speaker 2: put anybody in the run defense fully up. I thought
- 55:52Speaker 2: Anthony Jennings was good in this game. Five stuffs, four hurries.
- 55:57Speaker 2: I mean that's really big production. I think he's doing
- 56:00Speaker 2: his job on the defense and in the run game specifically,
- 56:03Speaker 2: doesn't really seem like the runs that are to his
- 56:06Speaker 2: side he's getting like crack blocked and things like that,
- 56:08Speaker 2: you know, not necessarily his fault. So I would say
- 56:11Speaker 2: that he's one of the few guys that is pulling
- 56:14Speaker 2: his weight on the defensive side of the ball. All right,
- 56:16Speaker 2: let's go to the downs, because there were certainly a
- 56:19Speaker 2: lot of choices.
- 56:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, we already did two of these off
- 56:22Speaker 4: the top. So just the coaching. Ye whether it be
- 56:25Speaker 4: the or there's one thing we didn't cover. So we
- 56:27Speaker 4: talked about the end of the half. Yep, we talked
- 56:29Speaker 4: about the win thing. We talked about changing the offensive line,
- 56:31Speaker 4: which I had Laiden Robinson, is it down. You just
- 56:34Speaker 4: got bullied out of that game. We're just staying on
- 56:37Speaker 4: the the uh, not going for two at the end
- 56:40Speaker 4: of regulation.
- 56:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good point. I'm glad you brought that up.
- 56:43Speaker 2: I hear both sides of it. For what it's worth,
- 56:46Speaker 2: the Nerds supported their decision to kick. I could not
- 56:49Speaker 2: believe that they actually did it. They said to kick
- 56:53Speaker 2: again for Tampa. Yeah.
- 56:55Speaker 4: I'm being dead serious when I say this. I always
- 56:57Speaker 4: thought the little graphic that comes up that says go
- 56:59Speaker 4: or kick, Yeah, I always thought they were making up
- 57:02Speaker 4: the number because I had never seen I had never
- 57:06Speaker 4: seen that graphic say kicked before in my life. I
- 57:08Speaker 4: had never seen that until that game. I was shocked.
- 57:11Speaker 4: I always thought they just they only had one version
- 57:13Speaker 4: of graphic that said go because they were trying to
- 57:15Speaker 4: further the analytics agenda. I didn't even know a kick
- 57:18Speaker 4: version of that graphic exists. Existing.
- 57:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so they would. They said it was close, it
- 57:22Speaker 2: was like three percentage points, but it definitely favored kick.
- 57:25Speaker 2: And my guess is that that was a big part
- 57:28Speaker 2: of the decision making. I know that irks you probably
- 57:30Speaker 2: inerks a lot of people that they're if.
- 57:33Speaker 4: They arrive at the right decision, they arrive at the
- 57:35Speaker 4: right decision. Well, no, the analytics people can't get mad
- 57:38Speaker 4: if if blindly following the math is the answer and
- 57:41Speaker 4: the math goes against what they want because a lot
- 57:43Speaker 4: of the analytics people don't want analytics. They're just impatient
- 57:45Speaker 4: and go for too. I want to see gopher to
- 57:48Speaker 4: well over time. No, you have the ball where you're
- 57:50Speaker 4: not like, No, that they're just I think a lot
- 57:52Speaker 4: of the analytics communities is just impatient and they don't
- 57:54Speaker 4: like the hard nosed football that involves, you know, establishing
- 57:58Speaker 4: to run multiple players whatever.
- 58:00Speaker 2: But is this because they're nerds? Is that what you're saying?
- 58:02Speaker 4: Sure, I don't really get that, but like I actually
- 58:06Speaker 4: went back and looked because I regardless of whether to
- 58:09Speaker 4: go for it or not, and I actually there's a
- 58:11Speaker 4: fail fair football conversation be at here. Math aside. I
- 58:15Speaker 4: do understand the argument to go for two. I think
- 58:17Speaker 4: it's a flavor thing. I won't say somebody's wrong if
- 58:20Speaker 4: they say they should go for two, I would kick it,
- 58:22Speaker 4: but I get it's a real, like good, legitimate football debate.
- 58:26Speaker 4: What I would say is the amount of and this
- 58:29Speaker 4: goes to the Tampa game too, the amount of people
- 58:32Speaker 4: surprised that the Patriots didn't go for two. That was
- 58:38Speaker 4: surprising to me that if you're saying, well, what do
- 58:40Speaker 4: you mean you don't go for two? What are you
- 58:42Speaker 4: talking about? I went back and looked the idea that
- 58:44Speaker 4: it's like some given in the NFL that you go
- 58:46Speaker 4: for two. There is not the case, and it never
- 58:50Speaker 4: has been. It's a college football thing. So all the
- 58:52Speaker 4: people that tell me college football is two amateur and
- 58:54Speaker 4: then come at me and say you should go for
- 58:55Speaker 4: two there, Well, there's one hundred and twenty something teams
- 58:58Speaker 4: that are doing that, especially if you're on the road.
- 59:00Speaker 4: And I went back to twenty fifteen because that's when
- 59:02Speaker 4: they moved the pat back. There have been six, well
- 59:05Speaker 4: now seven instances, but before the Patriots, six instances where
- 59:09Speaker 4: a team scored a touchdown in the final ten seconds
- 59:11Speaker 4: of the game to make it a one point game
- 59:14Speaker 4: pending the extra point of the You get what I'm saying.
- 59:18Speaker 4: Of those six teams, four kicked the extra point. Okay,
- 59:21Speaker 4: Now three of the four lost in overtime, so maybe
- 59:24Speaker 4: you look at that and whatever, we'll change their minds.
- 59:26Speaker 4: Now one team went for one team got the two
- 59:28Speaker 4: that went for it, the other one didn't. Now there's
- 59:29Speaker 4: one of them Baltimore right against Kansas City. I honestly
- 59:32Speaker 4: think it was the Chargers against Kansas City. There's a
- 59:34Speaker 4: Kansas City and there I remember that was the charge.
- 59:36Speaker 4: The point. These are all different teams with different circumstances.
- 59:39Speaker 4: This is why I hate the man that shouldn't inform
- 59:42Speaker 4: what the Patriots did. But what it does inform is saying, well,
- 59:45Speaker 4: everybody goes for two. There they don't. They really don't.
- 59:49Speaker 2: So my my, my feeling on the Gopher two thing
- 59:53Speaker 2: is if they had scored the touchdown on a conventional play,
- 59:58Speaker 2: not a eleven point seven to five second ridiculous, uh,
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: you know, circus play. Like if they had scored on
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: a conventional play, then I would have felt more inclined
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: to go for two. Not because of the fatigue factor
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: as much, but I just would have felt if I
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: was drawed, Mayo, I would have felt a little bit
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: more confident in actually getting the two points right, you
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like, Okay, we just ran a play.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: It just worked a perfection and we you know, he
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: hit the back of his foot and hit and hunter
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: Head real wide open walking into the end zone on
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: the touchdown, Like what we we can we can do this,
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: we have this down asking to go for two there,
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: I think is is asking a lot of Drake may
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: because now you're he's got to go back out there
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: and probably do the same exact thing that he just did, right.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: And And that's why you know, I always said, you've
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: heard me say this, Evan, when it comes to go
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: or not go, And this is why I can't stand
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: the math. The decision to go forward or not is
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: only as good as the play you call.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Yeah, like if they had if I had confidence, I
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: agree with you on the on that mostly, but like
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: even more now, like if I had confidence that they
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: had some like cheeky two point conversion play that was
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: actually gonna take everybody by surprising, not anything too like crazy,
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: but not like a trick play. I'm just saying, like,
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: you know, something like an RPO that we were just
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: talking about, or a roll out play or something that
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: was actually like oh wow, like they've practiced that clearly
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: a hundred times and like, you know, have it down.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: Then I would have I would have been impressed. I
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: don't know if I was really expecting that, right.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: Like, no, that's the thing. If they're looking at it
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: and look, it brings up a different issues. You should
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: go in every game with three or four two point
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: places you feel good about. But they struggled to get
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: the one yard earlier in the game. They were struggling
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: to get in. I can't run the ball right, they
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: were struggling to get in from the five earlier. It's like, yeah,
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: even if you're like, yeah, going for two here makes
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: a ton of sense, but we don't have a play
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: that we think can pick it up. Well, then what
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: you're just gonna lose the game out of pride in
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: the overall decision, Like I just the decision to go.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: I don't care about the math. I care about what
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: is your play? How good do you feel about the
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: play you were calling? And I understand if they didn't
- 1:02:04Speaker 4: feel good about the play in that situation.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: All right, what's your Because we both had coaching as
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: a as a doubt. So what's your next Jonathan Jones?
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: He just he I don't know if it's I know
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: he's dealing with injuries or age or whatever. Like they
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: were picking on him in this game, and he was struggling.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: To step slow these days. Yeah, and look the touchdown
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: pass that he gave up to Westbrook and kna is
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: a tough route to cover. Circus were out in the
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: red zone.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: And it's also guides much bigger than Yeah, and he.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: Has the whole side of the field to get open, right, Like,
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: that's a tough route, uh, to cover for anybody. But
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: it does feel like the Houston game this game, like
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Jonathan Jones getting picked on a little bit. I think
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I texted you this during the game actually about moving
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: him to safety.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: It was the after.
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: Not this season. It's probably not the best time.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: I might do it this season because their safety plays
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: not great either.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it's one of those things where usually when a
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: player starts to lose a step and can't run with
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: receivers anymore at corner, you know, the conventional wisdom is
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: to then move them you can have a second Yeah, Yeah,
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: I think it's a potential move for him. All right,
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: So you had Jonathan Jones, so I had Michael Jordan
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: as my number two down. I thought Laden Robinson honorable
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: mention in this as well, but he didn't play as
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: much and it's not his fault that he was playing.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: So let me ask you this, do you think so
- 1:03:29Speaker 4: they may to change on the interior, right? And Ben
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Brown also had his worst game of the year, and
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: I know he'd been struggling last couple of weeks, but
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: this was such a drop off. And I actually I
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: want to add one honorable mention of the ups Jeffrey Simmons,
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: one of the most underrated players in the league. Yeah,
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: dude is a stud.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll get to that in a second.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: But point B, do you think that it is related
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: that they made a change on the interior when the
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: interior had been working and other guys on the interior
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: started to struggle in addition to Leydon Robinson.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: I will allow for the fact that that might be
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: a factor in all of this, but I would also
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: say that Michael Jordan, just to stick with him for
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: a second, his film has been on a decline for
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: about a month now, I would say, and all this
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: moving around that they're going to do on the offensive
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: line potentially for Sunday, that I know is going to
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: take a lot of heat, and I agree with some
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: of it to an extent, But at this point, it
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: definitely does feel like Michael Jordan is teetering on unplayable
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: for them on the offensive line, and I certainly understand
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: that Michael Jordan is not a part of their future
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: on the offensive line. So getting a guy like Leyden
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: Robinson or even city So who they hate, apparently getting
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: one of those two guys in.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: There, not one of those two guys City So.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Getting one of those two guys in there just to
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: try to develop a younger player when the guy yet
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: you have, the veteran that you have starting isn't playing
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: well anyways, does make a lot of sense.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: The way they're going to get to that by moving
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: on WHENU to left guard and starting Robinson, maybe that
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: doesn't make much sense.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: But the idea of well, if.
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: This guy's not gonna play well anyways, and let's just
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: handed to the kids that in theory I think I
- 1:05:16Speaker 2: can get.
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: Do you think there's a chance they are holding out
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: and saying we'll make the change when cole Strange comes back.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: I do like that idea, and I do think at
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: this point, I know a lot of people have had
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: conversations about Cole Strange playing center. I definitely think at
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: this point that he's more needed at left guard than
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: he is at center. Now, Ben Brown was rough in
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: this game too, but I thought Ben Brown was fine
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: for what he is.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: My bigger complaint or problem with this whole thing, and
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: just to have the numbers for you, I had Michael
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: Jordan with five quarterback pressures allowed in this game. The
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: bigger problem that I had with this game. And this
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: goes back, you know, years and years with Belichick in
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: the past, like there's there's certain guys we talk about
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: all the time, not to talk about Bill. Let's we
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: talk about this all the time, Tuesday players, right, who's
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: the Tuesday players on the opponent? You get into the
- 1:06:10Speaker 2: game plan meeting, you get the coaches together, you say,
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: who's the one guy on defense for the Tennessee Titans
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: or the two guys on defense for the Tennessee Titans
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: that we cannot allow wreck this game, that we can't
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: let it.
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: It's Jeffrey Simmons. But the way Jiraw talked about it
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: after the game, talking about making surprise right, which who's
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: the first first player drawd Mail brought up on Wednesday
- 1:06:32Speaker 4: when he broke down to Jeffrey Simmons. So when you
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: come into this game, it's not even like lineup is
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: number one. We've we've already gotten over that, right, We've
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: already gone over that. I should say the lineup is
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: a big part of it, but I would also just
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: say the pass protection plans a big part of it
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: as well. Like there's no reason, you know, Tovandre Sweat's
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: a decent player against the run, he's excellent, but he's
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: not a pass rusher. So there's really no reason that
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: Jeffrey Simmons should have ever been one on one in
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: this game. Like you slide the line to Jeffrey Simmons,
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: it's very easy to do. The center is the midpoint
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: of the offensive line. You slide half slide one way,
- 1:07:09Speaker 4: you man to man the other side, right, so you
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: have three guys sliding and you have two guys man
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: to man on the other side. Usually you you know,
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: slide towards the play that the way you're running to
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: play right the first read and in the progression, but
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: you can mess with it and you slide to protection.
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: So the entire game, Ben Brown should have been opening
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: to Jeffrey Simmons his side of the right, and then
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: you have two guys on him the entire game. Like
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: that's the way that it should have been, the fact
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: that it wasn't is just bad coaching. Like, it's just
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: bad coaching. So I had Michael Jordan, I had you know,
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: you could put Ben Brown in this conversation. You can
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: put Layden Robinson in this conversation. But the end, all
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: the end, you know, the end, this whole rant. The
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: interior offensive line by the Patriots got their ass whipped
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: in this game. And that is not just on them,
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: it's also just on the coaching as well. So you
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: have to do a better job in general.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: But I I understand why they're gonna take Michael Jordan
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: out of this, out of the lineup, because he hasn't
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: been very good.
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: Yeah again, I think there's a better way to do it.
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: Put him with you. Last one, last one, Bryce Bearinger, Oh.
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: No, your boy. He had a couple of shanks, like
- 1:08:15Speaker 2: you can't have that. He had a big shank, lady,
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: He had a really.
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: Yeah, So yeah, there's not like there's no I don't
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: know how much would editorialize that the guy was one
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: of the best punters in the league to start the season.
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: He's cooled off a little bit, out kicked his coverage
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: in Jacksonville, shanked a couple punts of week. Gotta get
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: back on track.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: Is this a This isn't a Jake Bailey did too
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: many squats scenarios?
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: Hope not? Yeah, I hope not.
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: It was squats, right, was it squats? I think it's
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: like the hair is back or something like that. Squats
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: my last down. And I've said this before, so I'm
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: sorry for people that listen to all of our shows.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: And I'm repeating myself a little bit. But every single Monday,
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: Film Monday one of my favorite days of the week.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: I get to sit down, I get to watch.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: Watch The Loving Mondays is so on brim.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I get to watch the film. It's great. I
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: sit in with my laptop for like twelve straight hours
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: and watch film, and it's my favorite day of the week.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: I have started to dread watching the Patriots defense. I've
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: started to dread it because their run defense is so
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: tough to watch. It is so difficult to watch, like
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: it from alignment to fits to getting off blocks, fundamentals,
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: pad level, you know, I discipline, iding rushes like all
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: of it, all of it is just is just really
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: tough to watch. So I'll give you one example, I
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: could give you a billion. Obviously, in overtime they just
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: get there, blown off the line of scrimmage like this
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: wasn't anything creative in overtime. It was just like against
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Jacksonville in London, We're coming at you. You can't stop us.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: That's what we're doing, right Like, It's just that right
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: there is It sucks the soul right out of you,
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: right like that. The fact that you can't just line
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: up and stop somebody in the run game is just
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: really difficult to watch. But the thirty two yarder by
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: Tony Pollard on the opening drive of this game for
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: the Titans, which they scored a touchdown on, they ran
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: a front that I haven't seen them run a ton
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: where they have a four technique, So a defensive end
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: straight up over the tackle right, he's right lined up
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: right over the left tackles Jeremiah Farms. There's nobody outside
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: Jeremiah Farms, like there's nobody. There's no edge defender, there's
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: no outside linebacker standing up, there's no Anthony Jennings over there,
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: there's no number nobody. So what do the Titans do?
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: They just motion a tight end into the formation and
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: they crack block Jeremiah Farms and they get the easiest
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: edge of all time. Like it's just easiest edge ever,
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: and they get the the DB's in the fit and
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: now we're just running downhill at two hundred and you know,
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: one hundred and ninety pound defensive backs right, Like it's
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: just that to me, is not necessarily you know, DeMarcus
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: Covington said today that the dbs need to do a
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: better job in the run game. You should help out
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: the dbs, right, Like, why is there not an edge
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: defender there to set the edge of the defense, Like
- 1:11:14Speaker 2: having a hand in the dirt, defensive lineman inside the tackle,
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: be your furthest player out on the line of scrimmage
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: on that side of the ball just doesn't make logical sense.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: And I watched their run defense and there's just times
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: where I'm like, who in this gap? Like who's assigned
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: to this gap? Like there's nobody in the gap, So
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: that is that on the players that they're not getting
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: aligned correctly on the field. Is that on the coaches
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: for the fronts they're running or what they're coaching in
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: terms of alignment. What I'm basically getting at is is
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: that this is not talent. This is details. Yeah, And
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: all it takes is being sharper on these details and
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: better with your fundamentals, and their run defense will get better.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: It doesn't matter that they don't have Vince will Fork
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: or a Juwan Bentley or whichever player of from the
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Patriots pass that you want to point at that it
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: was a good run defender. They have enough guys that
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: can stop the run. Davon Godshaw is a really good
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: nose tackle, Anthony Jennings is a really good edgesetter. They
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: need to deploy these guys better than what they're doing,
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: or they need to get the players on the same
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: page and to buy into what they're doing. Way too
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: many blown fits, blown gaps, poor assignmon sound football, and
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: poor formation on the defensive side of the ball. It's
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: a painful watch to watch their run defense right now.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: It's it's not up to it's not NFL standard, and
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: it's it's taking away from my mondays Alex. That's the
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: most important thing.
- 1:12:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it hasn't been good plan and simple.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna take your calls here in a second,
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: I promise, but before we do, Massachusetts is made for everyone.

- 1:12:59Speaker 2: there's something for everyone this fall, Massachusetts, where everything is
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: made possible. Plan your trip at visit m dot com.
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the phones. I know you
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: guys have been waiting, so I appreciate it. We appreciate it.
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: Sam is in Connecticut. What's up?
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: Sam?
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: Hey?
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: You hear me?
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: Yes? Go forward?
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Sam?
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: All right, awesome. I had one question that I want
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: to ask you guys. You guys want to do it
- 1:13:25Speaker 5: a little bit, but I just want to ask about
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: the run game in general. Well, what do you think
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: the main issue is with the run game? Is if
- 1:13:35Speaker 5: mostly on scheming? I know you guys are talking about
- 1:13:38Speaker 5: that a lot earlier. Has it been at all in
- 1:13:41Speaker 5: the on the players? I don't know how Gibson's really
- 1:13:44Speaker 5: been doing individually. I know Stevenson, you know, at the
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: beginning of the year was breaking a lot of tackles.
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: I want to I want to figure out who if
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: it was. Those two things are a big part of
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: it was offensive line, uh, rush blocking and if that
- 1:13:59Speaker 5: kind of took a decline, and I kind of wanted
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: to know, you know why you guys think that fell
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: off so much just since the beginning of the season.
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: If if it was maybe you know, difference with Drake
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: May playing at quarterback and defenses are kind of treating
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: it differently. I just love to hear you guys talk
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: about it.
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for the call.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: Sam.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's a good Uh, it's a good question. So
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: a couple of things that I see with their run game,
- 1:14:21Speaker 2: and then als obviously give your thoughts. I think the
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: number one thing to me is uh, And I've been
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: We've been saying this going back to the Patricia years,
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: like they just don't have the offensive linemen to block
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: an outside zone system. Like I just don't believe that they,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: from a personnel standpoint, have the right people to block it.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: And I know on when who kind of gets used
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: as like the perfect example because he's a three hundred
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: and forty pound guy. But I would just say across
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: the board. They don't have the athletes for it. So
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: outside Zonetah. You know, you look at teams that run
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: that kind of system, they have a lot of I guess,
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: just to use a patriot, like, they have a bunch
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: of cold strangers, right, Like they have a bunch of athletes.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: They have a bunch of lean, very athletic interior players
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: especially that can horizontally move at that ninety degree angle
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: and reach blocks on the line of scrimmage. So a
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: lot of outside zone is that you're gonna you know,
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: if you're going to the left side, you're gonna have
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: a guy right in your gap on your outside hip,
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: and you have to reach that player and you have
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: to turn him some you know, out of that gap,
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: and that takes a lot of athleticism and a lot
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: of explosiveness out of your stance. So if they want
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: to be that kind of team, and they truly want
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: to commit to being an outside zone run team, which
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: I do think they do, because that's what Gerrod Mayo
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: said when he was hired, that he kind of infatuated
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: by that system, by the Shanahan Tree, then you need
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: to draft for that system, like you need to go
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: out and draft lineman that fit the mold of that system.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: I don't necessarily think Caden Wallace or Laden Robinson are
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: outside zone offensive linemen. So I would say, on the
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: one hand, I definitely will continue to harp and pound
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: the table for them to just go downhill at people again,
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: like run some gap schemes guys like run some duo,
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: run some lead, run some power, and just downhill right
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: at them, like take on Win, you take Robinson, take
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: these big guys and get them moving off the line
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: of scrimmage. Right now, the push that they're generating is
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: not good enough. And I don't think it's totally on them.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: I think a lot of it is scheme.
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with that, But I also think and
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: maybe they're going away from this, and we talked about
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: maybe Laden Robinson went in last week because they wanted
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: a guy who was primarily a run blocker. With Drake
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: May coming in, they're putting more emphasis or they're putting
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: more attention on getting players in who are better pass blockers,
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: and they just don't have a ton of guys who
- 1:16:50Speaker 4: are solid in both regards right now. They don't even
- 1:16:53Speaker 4: when it comes to moving a guy like Mike and
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: Winn who's right guard to right tackle. That's a move
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: you make in regards to the run game. You're not
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: making that to do a better job protecting the quarterback.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: So how much can you do about that right now?
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: I mean, you can keep Mike going win right guard.
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: That's one way to help it. But some of it
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: to me not a personnel thing in the sense, well
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: it is, I guess the personnel thing in the sense
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: of who they have available. But I think because of
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: who they have available, the coaching staff at times has
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: to choose do we want guys who are better pass blockers,
- 1:17:22Speaker 4: better run blockers, because there are gonna be guys that
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: have significant weaknesses at one or the other. And with
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: Drake may In, the emphasis is on protecting the quarterback.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: It's a fair point. I just say the other thing,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: you know, quickly, they they're running a lot of they're
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: running a lot of plays to the weak side of
- 1:17:38Speaker 2: the formation, so away, so away from where the tight
- 1:17:42Speaker 2: ends or this or so even sometimes the jumbo tight end,
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: like the tackle eligible.
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: I don't know what's up with it.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: The one thing that typically lends itself when you do
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: that is that you're one on one on the back side,
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: so you you technically have the numbers to that side
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: of the field because the defense is getting tilt over
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: to the side that the tight end is on, so
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: you should have a numbers advantage running there. But the
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: problem is is that it's everybody's on their own right,
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: Like it's it's one on ones.
- 1:18:11Speaker 4: Across the board, right.
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: So you know, last week we talked a lot about
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: that goal line run that won the game against the Jets.
- 1:18:18Speaker 2: Like in that instance, you have the polers, So you
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: have what they call fixers, right, the guys that if
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: the guys on the line of scrimmage blow their block,
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: you have like a second wave almost of blockers that
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: can then make them right and fix the problem when
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: you're running weak side and you don't have fixers, you
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: don't have pollers coming from the other side of the field,
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: then those guys, if they blow their block, that's it
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: that the runs over. And that's what I'm seeing a
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: lot of on film. Like they early on in this game,
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: they made Cities so eligible. A couple of times they
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: ran lead with the full back being City so in
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: the backfield and Ramandri Stevenson didn't run behind City, so
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: he ran the other way. So that to me, I
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: just don't it doesn't add up to me like that.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: I watched that play and was similar to watching the
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: run defense. I'm like, that doesn't look right, Like you
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: have the whole run set up to run behind city.
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: So but then Drake May and Ramandri Stevenson are He's
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: going left, and both the cornerback and the running back
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: are on the same page about which way he's going.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: So it wasn't like there was like some weird exchangeer
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: or snafu back there. To me, they they pointed the
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: run in the wrong direction. I don't know if that's
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: just as simple as a screw up or if there
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: was something more at play there at philosophical.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: Thing, but I just don't.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: I don't care for it, Alex. I don't like, why
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: put a three hundred pound lineman at full back and
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: then not run behind him?
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it goes back. They did this in
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: the Seattle game. Remember where they ran the unbalanced line.
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: They had Hunter henry at left tackle and they they
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: ran they ran behind Hunter Henryett left tackle, Like this
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: is it's not the first time they've tried something or
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: they've tried that a couple of times this year, and yeah,
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: Yeah, fullback's great. Full back helps so much to me
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: in the run game.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: If they're gonna keep running this offense, you want to
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: see him, because I've gotten this question a lot, do
- 1:20:06Speaker 4: you want to see him add a true fullback and
- 1:20:08Speaker 4: incorporate it next year?
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: I don't want them to keep running this offense, but
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: if they if they insist on running or even.
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: A more developed version of this offense. Basically, if Van
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Pelt's next back next year, even if they add in
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: some of the pistol stuff and some of the design
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: quarterback run stuff, do you think that there's room to
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: incorporate a full back into a version of this offense. Yeah.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Absolutely, But in order to do that, this is not
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: a James Devi Jakob Johnson.
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: No, it's it's.
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: It's a it's used check.
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: Like who was the guy they had the Packers, ironically
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: not Dalton Keene. They had him and he opted out
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: the COVID year and then he retired.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, they needed like a more athletic full back
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: because he's going to have to block out on a
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: perimeter and some are just a little bigger.
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: Than Jahem Bell. I don't think Jaeen Bell is quite.
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: I think Jaaine Bell has potential to be that guy though,
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: Like I wouldn't mind at least trying to see if
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: he could do it. Honestly, I think he has a
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: chance to. But oh, Danny Vitel, Danny Vitel, Yes, I
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: remember Danny Vittel. I thought Danny Vitel was going to
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: be a thing for a second.
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: I well, he was. They signed him to be a thing,
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: but he Yeah, it was the COVID year and he
- 1:21:13Speaker 4: opted out and then he retired. How much I think
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: they even like extended him, They signed him for a
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: one year deal.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: How much podcast time do you think you and I
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: wasted talking about Danny Vittel.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: At least at least weren't doing podcasts that year, that's
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: the one you weren't doing.
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: That's true. We would have done a lot, at least
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: thirty minutes.
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: It was. It was it was a cosmic happening that
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: that that was the one year we weren't doing podcast.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: We didn't get to talk about Danny Vitel together.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: That's what they get to do with Danny vital Who
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: else did we missed that year probably a lot, but
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: Danny Cam because he was still here to twenty twenty one. Yeah,
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: we never got to talk to mere Bird. Underrated player.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: Underrated player, under I mean that underrated respect on Demir
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: Bird's name, I mean he had, he had. They replaced
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: him Nelson waiting for an hour and seven.
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: They replaced him with Nelson Aglore and they both have
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: like equal productions. Yeah.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: Year, now Demir Bird could fly.
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: Steve is in New Jersey. What's up, Steve? Steve are
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: you there?
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: That's my fault. I talked to me, you did, Stevie?
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: All right? Steve calls back if if you're still there?
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: All right. Todd is in North Carolina? What's up?
- 1:22:13Speaker 4: Todd?
- 1:22:15Speaker 3: So before you got on you Evan, and just after
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: you left yesterday I talked to Jog a little bit
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: and John felt that ADP was brilliant and that he's
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: being kind of held back. He's not allowed to be
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: creative and not allowed to do as much. And then
- 1:22:29Speaker 3: in the chat today for PU there's a guy who
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: gave us a quote from Mayo on w E I
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: saying that you know he's in the headset, he's making
- 1:22:38Speaker 3: the calls for the offense and that's how it works.
- 1:22:42Speaker 3: So he's actually doing offense and I don't like the
- 1:22:46Speaker 3: sound of that. And then I was thinking about that.
- 1:22:48Speaker 3: You combine that with may talking about how proud he is.
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: Of all the audibles he's had to make, and I'm.
- 1:22:53Speaker 3: Beginning to wonder, like just who is coaching what and
- 1:22:56Speaker 3: who's doing what? And it's starting to make me a
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: little concern. What do you guys think about the coaching
- 1:23:01Speaker 3: and is AVP brilliant and being held back?
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: I'll take it off, thanks Todd.
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: I don't think Gerrod Mayo is is is coaching or
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: super involved in the offense. I don't think.
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: I don't get that impression. I don't think so either.
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: Now being on the headset, like obviously every head coach
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: is on the headset and is in that you know, okay,
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: you know sometimes like maybe he wants to explain how
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: they want to handle a certain situation, right to Alice
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Van Pelt, like you know, you mentioned in the situation
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: before halftime against the Jets, like let's just run it
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: out here, let's see yeah, right, that sort of thing.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: So I think that that's definitely possible. But I don't
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: think Girod Mayo's is getting in there and calling plays
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: like and you know he shouldn't be being in Drake Mayzier,
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: He's not. Now, do I think Alex van Pelt's being
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: held back? No, I think this is Alex van Pelt's offense.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: I think this is the offense they've run in Cleveland.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: I think this is the offense he ran in Green
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Bay with Mike McCarthy. It's the offense that Mike McCarthy's
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: running in Dallas with the Cowboys right now. Like, this
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: is the offense I don't. I don't think that there's
- 1:24:06Speaker 2: some secret sauce that's being missed from this.
- 1:24:08Speaker 4: I mean, I think there's to an extent of him
- 1:24:11Speaker 4: being held back by the personnel. And I think he
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: even talked about this that like the execution is limiting
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: some of the things they can do. But in that
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: sense he might be being held there.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I just don't think that from a creative sense,
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: Like I don't think that he's not a this wizard
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: that we're missing out on. I wish he was, Like
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: I wish that was the case, because you would think
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: by you know, four or five starts in with Drake
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: May maybe we'd start to see some of that.
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: Well. I think this is the week, like and you
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: have the concussion in the middle there, which maybe throws
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: a ranch into that this is the week where that
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: element of it should start ramping up.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, I do want to talk a little
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: bit of Bears.
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: Marine. The we actually did like a pretty solid Bears preview,
- 1:24:49Speaker 4: more of a preview than we usually do. We were
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: talking Bears early in the show. I'm not saying we can't.
- 1:24:53Speaker 4: I'm just saying no, I.
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: Want to talk a little bit about Caleb, but I
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: also want to get the emails up and Marine, the
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: email is not logged in. If you can come help
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: me with that, thank you. I want to talk a
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: little bit about Caleb because look, it's a conversation and
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: I like hand up. I'm not going to change my
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: mind or act like I didn't feel this way during
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: the draft. I had Caleb as the number one quarterback
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: in the draft. I had him as the slam Dug
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: number one pick. I would have taken him number one
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: overall if I was Ryan Pace and Matt Eberflus and
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: the Chicago Bears. So I don't fault them for anything
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: that they did. But now, in hindsight, with the benefit
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: of it, Jading Daniels has certainly outplayed Caleb Williams. That
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: goes without saying, and I think there's a case statistically,
- 1:25:41Speaker 2: obviously in a much smaller sample size, that Drake may
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: has at least played just as well, if not better
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: than Caleb Williams as well, despite the fact that Caleb
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: Williams has a great supporting cast on paper, or a
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: much better one at least in the Patriots. I mean,
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: I remember coming into the season with Chicago Alex that
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: people are saying that this might be the best setup a.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: Number one pick has ever had. Yeah, in Chicago with Caleb.
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: So what are your thoughts so far on Caleb and
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: what he's done? You know, because I've been I've been
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: a little underwhelmed. I'm not gonna lie. I'm not coming
- 1:26:16Speaker 2: on here and trying to, you know, bash him to
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: make Drake look better, I promise, but I just have
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: been a little bit underwhelmed.
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: I mean, he's been inconsistent, I think would be the
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: best way to put it. He's had some games where
- 1:26:27Speaker 4: he's looked unbelievable, but it was really like a four
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: game stretch there in the middle of the year. He
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: didn't start the season strong. He hasn't been good the
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: last two weeks since the buy. So he's thrown nine touchdowns,
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: but they've come in four total games. And on one hand,
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: for a young quarterback, yeah, consistency is one of the
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: tough things. But this is like to an extreme, especially
- 1:26:46Speaker 4: when you factor in the talent he has around him.
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: And I think we talked about this when he was
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: at un and c usc was he going to be
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: able to three step drop get the ball out right?
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: For the concerns we talk about with Drake may and
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: his inability to play in structure, a lot of that's
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: there with Caleb too, and the offense Shane Waldern is calling,
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: for whatever reason, is like incredibly structure based. I think
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: you could argue it's more structure based than what the
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: Patriots are calling for May or at the very least,
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: Williams is more adhering to the structure. He's less willing
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: to break the structure, and so he's fighting himself. He's
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: fighting himself and something's got to give. And I know
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: people in Chicago are not happy with Shane Waldern, and
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: I get that, whether that's him, whether it's Williams, like,
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: it's just the flashes are there. But I think they
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: just have him fighting himself too much. Yeah.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: So I think it's funny with Shan Waldron because when
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: I watch the Bears offense right now, in their system,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: I see a lot of the same things that the
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: Patriots run. Conceptually offensively, they run a West Coast offense
- 1:27:47Speaker 2: just like the Patriots. Waldron is a McVeagh guy, you know,
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: came from the Rams, you know, the Seahawks via the Rams,
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: but followed Sean McVay from Washington when McVay was the
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: OC there to Los Angeles, right, So this is a
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: true mcveay guy. But Waldron at least to this point,
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: and he did a little bit more in Seattle. So
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: maybe this is a rookie quarterback thing more than anything.
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: But they don't motion much. They don't do much in
- 1:28:15Speaker 2: terms of their pre snap to alter the defense or
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: affect the defense, just like the Patriots. And I see
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: a lot of the same sort of rudimentary route concepts
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: right like we're gonna run a high low over here,
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: or we're gonna run stick over there. We're going to
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: run all curls here on third down or whatever. Like,
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: It's all just kind of stuff that frankly, people have
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: been running since like high school, right, And I think
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: that there's a lot of that. I think they're spacing
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: and the way that they set up the reads for
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: Caleb has put a lot of pause into his decision
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: making and has caused problems for them as well. So
- 1:28:52Speaker 2: I put a lot of it on the design of
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: the offense and the offensive coordinator. With that being said,
- 1:28:58Speaker 2: I agree with everything that you said about this was
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: the question mark coming into his career with Caleb was
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: was he going to be able to operate on time,
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: in rhythm, in structure. Like we know that he can
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: do all the great stuff when the play breaks down,
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: but was he going to be able to play conventional
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: quarterback at a high enough level to make it worth
- 1:29:21Speaker 2: it right to make this all go? And so far,
- 1:29:24Speaker 2: I would say he struggled with that a little bit,
- 1:29:27Speaker 2: you know, growing on time, throwing accurately with timing and
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: rhythm and anticipation down the field. A lot of the
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: time when you see quarterbacks misthrows, it's not because they're
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: they can't control the ball, it's because they're not anticipating,
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: or they're timing is off, so they're throwing late, or
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: they're throwing early, and now all of a sudden, a
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: ball that actually would have been perfectly fine looks like
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: it's a bad throw. So I see a lot of
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: that with Caleb as well. But if you're the Bears
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: and I know this is already happening, there's a lot
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: of Justin Field's PTSD, just like we have some mac
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: Jones p atsd here. So a lot of the issues
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: when you talk about, you know, reading the field, anticipation
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: like that type of stuff, A lot of that was
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: the knocks on Justin Field. So this sounds familiar for
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: Chicago fans. And they also hate their coordinator. So all
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: of this sounds a lot the same as some of
- 1:30:19Speaker 2: the things that we've dealt with here over the last
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: couple of years with Chicago. What do you think though,
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: You're still in on Caleb and like, you know what
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: you you expect to see out of him on Sunday.
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: I mean, he's still has some talent. I you know,
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: I'm expecting him to make some plays, but I think
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: again he's they're not allowing him to go fully into
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: his bag. And I wouldn't be surprised if if this
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: game turns into a little bit of a slog. You know,
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: there might be flashes here and there, but I'm not
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: expecting like three hundred yards or three touchdowns or anything
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: like that. Yeah.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: So really his best game has been in London against Jacksonville,
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: which is not a very good team as we know.
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: So yeah, like Mac Jones this week, that's the that's
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: the word on the street, that.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: Is the word on the streat. I might actually watch
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: that on tape just to see what he looks like.
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: I'm curious. Yeah, I'm curious. He had a good preseason.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: We could do a Mac Jones minute next week maybe
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: if I if I have time, I think I think
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: we should. Yeah, I'll see if I have time.
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: Yeah, but what if he's like good, he's really good,
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: and I think.
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: We have really good I think he could be serviceable.
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: We always know, I mean, like in this one game,
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: what if he's really good, I think we have a Jones.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: They are no, they played the Eagles last week. It's Vikings,
- 1:31:31Speaker 4: so it's Brian Flores's Brian Flores.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: He is not gonna be really good.
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: I think Peterson totally like dumped on Sam Darnald today too.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: Yikes, Peterson talks at but he he.
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: He, he has his thoughts on quarterbacks. Hung on. I
- 1:31:46Speaker 4: want to see if I can find the quote, so yeah,
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: Peterson or Peterson p E t or p E d
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: Doug Peterson's with the d okay? Uh.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Other thing on the Bears that I had a thought
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: on as well, hang.
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: On, Doug Peterson asked earlier why Sam Donald has turned
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: it around this year? Justin Jefferson. I mean, he's not wrong,
- 1:32:12Speaker 4: it's but remember what he said about Mac and the
- 1:32:15Speaker 4: he's not New England anymore. He goes back to his
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: Patriots ways. He's not the fraid just rip on quarterbacks.
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: That's that's not right.
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: Anyways, the other thing I had a thought on with
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: the Bears is that, you know what, I I was
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: impressed with their process this offseason. And as we start
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: to turn the page into the offseason, we'll obviously have
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: a lot more conversations about this next you know, in
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: the next six months or whatever. But they did all
- 1:32:44Speaker 2: the right things to try to make this thing viable.
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: Like if you're the Patriots trading out of a top pick,
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: Let's say they get the number one pick like Chicago
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: had a couple of years ago. They trade out of
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: it to Carolina. Carolina takes Bryce Young. That obviously hasn't
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: worked out, But that's not the point I'm driving at.
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: The picks that they got back for that trade were insane,
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: Like they got four picks back and DJ Moore. So
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: they've used those picks on Darnell Wright, Tyreg Stevenson. Ironically,
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: now Caleb Caleb was Carolina's pick technically number one overall
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: last year, and then they still have Carolina's twenty twenty
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: five second as well, and then they traded one of
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: the picks for Montees Sweat, and they traded a pick
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: for Keenan Allen right like, and they have all this surplus.
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: So they did a nice job. I think of rebuilding
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: this roster, and I just look at it and think,
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: if Elliott Wolf can pull off something similar, maybe it's
- 1:33:43Speaker 2: not quite the Hall because I don't know if teams
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: are gonna look at any of these quarterbacks like they
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: looked at Bryce Young, but if he can pull off
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: a similar trade down and then just kind of fan
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: out those assets with trades and with draft picks, like
- 1:33:58Speaker 2: I think that this is a pretty good blueprint for
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: the Patriots.
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean we've used the Texans a lot, but
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: the Bears path is certainly there for its absolutely therefore.
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean, look, the Bears are four and four.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: They're not terrible. They're not as good as they want
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: to be. The other couple of things I had on
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: the Bears and I want to talk about their defense too.
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: I think Keenan Allen might be kind of washed, Like, yeah,
- 1:34:22Speaker 2: it doesn't look great for him. DJ Moore some weird
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: attitude stuff going.
- 1:34:27Speaker 4: On with it. Walked off the field mid play.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: Yeah, like walk off the field. His body language on
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: film is terrible. Like remember you're talking about the receivers
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: earlier on in the season with their body language like
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: Polk and Pop Douglas. It's similar with DJ Moore, and
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: I get it, like sometimes he's open and he's not
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: getting the ball and receivers are gonna get frustrated by that.
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: I've never seen a receiver walk off the field like
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: that before mid play. I don't care if you got hurt, Like,
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: I just have never seen that before. That was crazy.
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: His press conference this week was odd, weird, just talking
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: about that situation and just kind of like making light
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: of the fact that he just quit in the middle
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: of a play, and then also kind of not really
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: backing his head coach, like it was just a weird
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: vibe out of him in the press conference. And Roma
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: Dunsay is a good young player, but I think his
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: timing with Caleb is a problem right now. They're still
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: trying to work out. And I haven't necessarily seen the
- 1:35:24Speaker 2: explosive element to Romadonsay's game yet. I think he's a
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: really good receiver at the first two levels of the
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: defense already, but I haven't necessarily seen a guy that's
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: running by anybody or making any putting any fear into
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: anybody down the field. So what I'm trying to get
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: out with all of this is that the Bears offense
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: just looks dysfunctional, like they look kind of broken. Their
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: tape last week was terrible. They're spacing their execution body
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: language like across the board. And this is a team
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: that's four and four and two games out of a
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: playoff spot. It's not like they're out of it, so
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: that whole Bears operation offensively. They're twenty seventh in the
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: league in DVOA. They're just kind of look like a
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: team that sort of quit on the coaching a little bit.
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: I've been surprised to see how far, fast and quick
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: that's fallen off the rails you mentioned earlier in the
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: show Running the Football maybe a little bit this week.
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: This Bears run defenses is horrid. It's very bad. They're
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: thirtieth in DVA against the run. They're very bad against
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: schemes with pullers. So once again I am demanding to
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: see some downhill schemes, some gap schemes, pull, some go
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: and get downhill. At this Bears defense, they are giving
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: up seven yards of carry seven against pulling concepts right,
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: whether it's power, counter, g lead, whatever, seven yards of
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: carry is a huge number, so they are susceptible to that.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: The two guys that worry me on the Bears defense,
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: obviously Montes Wet if he plays, is a problem out
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: on the outside. Tremaine Edmonds is a really good coverage linebacker,
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: and he's one of those guys that is going to
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: be hunting against a rookie quarterback right for a bad
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: throw over the middle that he can maybe intercept. But
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: what do you see about this Bears defense, because I
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: do think the Patriots might have some trouble passing the ball.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: It's a pretty good pass defense, but they struggle a
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: lot against the run.
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: I'm with you, to get right game for somebody on
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: the ground, Yeah, to get right game for somebody, but
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: really on both sides of the ball. But yeah, this
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: is a Bears team that it hasn't done a good
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: job against the run by any metric. They're twenty ninth
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: in the league allowing five yards per carry, five even
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: yours per carry. I feel like a broken record because
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: I think we said this, not obviously not last week,
- 1:37:38Speaker 4: but I think we said it two weeks ago, like
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: this is a Patriots chance just start running the ball.
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: But this really is a Patriots chance to start running
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: the ball. And That's what I'm looking at. Like, I
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: don't know that Drake May needs to go out and
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: have this massive game. Obviously people want the quarterback duel
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: between him and Caleb Williams, but I think just as
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: much if the Patriots come out run the ball well
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: and win off that I think you feel good about it. Yeah,
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: I agree.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: I definitely think this is a game that I would
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: be disappointed if they can't run the ball at all
- 1:38:06Speaker 2: in this game. They should be able to run the
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: ball against the Bears. This is a scheme game to
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: me as much as it is about a mentality thing
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: with the run game. There's a way to run the
- 1:38:15Speaker 2: ball against the Bears. There's a blueprint against the Bears
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: of how to run the football. The Cardinals just did
- 1:38:20Speaker 2: it last week with two hundred and thirteen yards on
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: the ground. Like, just follow the brew print, don't overthink it,
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: don't get too fancy, don't be running outside zone against
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: the team. I can't stop a power scheme right like
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: run downhill out this team, pull some guards, get Ramondre
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: Stevenson going, and then maybe Drake May only has to
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: drop back to past thirty times instead of fifty three
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: and we don't see as many turnovers in as many
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: catastrophic plays. So that's the Bears. I'm really curious about
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: how this goes for Caleb because so far it's been
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: a little bit of what some people that were anti
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: Caleb were worried about. Yeah, they look right so far.
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: And this is gonna be one where like if they lose,
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: for what the national viewers of this Patriots team, Yeah,
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: there's gonna be some big time questions he's gonna have
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: to face. And this was my take on the leadership
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: questions about Caleb Williams coming into the draft, was is
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: he the best leader?
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: No, probably not. If he's winning games, I think he'll
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: be fine. If he's losing games, it doesn't really matter
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: what kind of leader he is because the team's losing.
- 1:39:21Speaker 4: And this is where you're kind of getting to a
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: precipice where is, regardless of how he's handling himself as
- 1:39:26Speaker 4: a leader, is he gonna start losing guys because the
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: results aren't there on the field.
- 1:39:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a good point. And look, we said some
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: similar things about the Jaguars with Doug Peterson, and obviously
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: the Jaguars played for him in London in that game
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: and they won that game pretty handedly, and and all
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: that stuff sort of quiets down. But nobody's see hotter
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: right now than Matt Eberflus, Like Matt Eberfu's on a
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: red hot seat. They lose on a hail mary against Washington.
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: That was an ugly, ugly sequence for coaching. You know,
- 1:39:54Speaker 2: the free yards that they gave up on the play
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: before the hail mary, the way they defended the Hail Mary.
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: I obviously put most of it on Tyreeks not having yeah,
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: being a knucklehead, but also at the same time, like
- 1:40:05Speaker 2: you know, that's coaching, like that's you need to have
- 1:40:08Speaker 2: your team buttoned up in those big situations. And then
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: they come out the following week against Arizona and get
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: their doors blown off of them by the Cardinals who
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: are frisky, Like the Cardinals have played well, especially lately,
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: but still you go in there and you basically have
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: no offense and you're twenty nine to nine, get blown out,
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: can't stop the run. No offense sounds familiar, like those
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: are bad football team boxes that they are checking. So
- 1:40:35Speaker 2: I would say that if the Bears lose to the
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: Patriots on Sunday, which I picked the Bear so I
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: don't think they will. But if the Patriots beat the
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: Bears on Sunday, if Mattiberflues gets fired Monday morning, I
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: will not be surprised.
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: I wouldn't be surprised either.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's either him or Shane Waldron's going
- 1:40:51Speaker 2: I don't know which one might be Waldron, he.
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: Might have it might be Waldron, but somebody. Yeah, I
- 1:40:55Speaker 4: wouldn't be surprised if somebody gets the ax for that.
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, all right, let's open up to some of
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: these or read some of these emails, I should say,
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: a couple of good ones, and if you want to
- 1:41:04Speaker 2: join in the last twenty minutes here of the show,
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: eight five to five, Pats five hundred is the phone number,
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: and we'll just kind of let you guys take us
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: here to the end at four o'clock, So make sure
- 1:41:14Speaker 2: feel free to call in and give us your take.
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: But we have a lot of emails here Alex about
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: all of our takes, you know, about the coaching and
- 1:41:23Speaker 2: all that kind of stuff, just asking us why we
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: are not throwing more criticism at and about the front office.
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: And look, I'll just put this out there. In season,
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: I'm not really like too focused on the personnel train,
- 1:41:39Speaker 2: like I yeah, but like right now where I'm in
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: the weeds, like I'm in the trenches, I'm in the
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: x's and o's, I'm on the film like we we
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: are in we love the off season, like we are
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: an off season podcast. But that the time right now
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: is not about the roster. So that's sort of part
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: of why I I don't necessarily bring up Elliott wolf
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: A Ton.
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you, and I think I've said my
- 1:42:02Speaker 4: piece plenty on the construction of this offensive line or
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: lack thereof, like major, major miss. I assume that's because
- 1:42:09Speaker 4: the deadline. I know people with the emails, because the deadline,
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: I know people were upset. The big move was never there.
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: It was just never there, nothing that made sense. I
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: will say, I think it is a miss not moving
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: one of kJ Osborne or Taekwon Thornton, if not both,
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: I understand they want to get value for the player.
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: kJ Osborne is not going to be here next year.
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: Taekwon Thornton maybe because he has another year on his contract.
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: You trade in the offseason whatever. kJ Osborne is not
- 1:42:35Speaker 4: gonna be here for next year. A sixth round pick
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: isn't a lot, but it's something else you have to
- 1:42:40Speaker 4: throw into a trade that you don't have. If you
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: let Osborne walk, even a seventh round pick pick swap
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: right seventh becoming a sixth you don't have that. They
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: have a ton of seventh round picks they could have
- 1:42:48Speaker 4: pick swapped or something. Not getting that deal done is
- 1:42:51Speaker 4: a miss. Yeah, I don't know the I mean, here
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: we go. We did it. We did five minutes on
- 1:42:55Speaker 4: them not getting that deal done. I don't know that
- 1:42:57Speaker 4: we were going to open up the show. I don't
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: know that we were gonna do half an hour on
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: them not trading kJ Osborne. But to your point, I've
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: said my piece on the construction of this roster, it's
- 1:43:07Speaker 4: they were misses this offseason. They were significant misses this
- 1:43:10Speaker 4: offseason in the draft as well. It's looking like but
- 1:43:13Speaker 4: we'll we do that in January. We don't really do
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: a ton of that November because it's just we'll get
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: on the coaching staff in November. We talked about the win,
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: we talked about changing the offensive line. Yeah, that's this
- 1:43:23Speaker 4: time of year. Yeah.
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: My thing on Elliott Wolf, the one thing that I
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: would give him right now is the grace of last
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: off season, him and Grodmeo's first on the job and
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: just being close to it a little bit like obviously
- 1:43:43Speaker 2: I don't want to overplay that, like I'm not close
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: to it, but you know what I'm trying to say,
- 1:43:49Speaker 2: it was a whirlwind, Like it was a lot like
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: you you changed hands, right, you changed regimes? You what
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: the greatest head coach of all time walks out the building.
- 1:43:59Speaker 2: I don't think people realize just how much of a
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: infrastructure Bill had built here over twenty plus years. I
- 1:44:07Speaker 2: know that sounds like it should be obvious. And so
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: a lot was going on. They had a really bad
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: roster that they inherited. They had no quarterback, and they
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: really had no culture or nothing to attract free agents
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: with other than money. So I look at what they
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: did in the off season, and I say, if they
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: came out of that off season last year with Drake
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: May as a franchise quarterback, then I'm not saying that
- 1:44:35Speaker 2: I'm giving them an A, but I'm giving them a
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: passing grade. Right, I give him a C minus at
- 1:44:41Speaker 2: the bare minimum.
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: So I said on the night they took May, I
- 1:44:45Speaker 4: said they had a good draft by drafting Drake May,
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: they had a good draft. The rest of the rounds
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: two through seven will decide if it's a good draft
- 1:44:53Speaker 4: or great draft. And you were not a great. No,
- 1:44:55Speaker 4: we're certainly not a great. But they had a good
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: draft taking Drake Right, there was all the temptation to
- 1:44:59Speaker 4: trade down. Do you move down for JJ McCarthy, Do
- 1:45:01Speaker 4: you take a tackle or receiver? I know it's oh,
- 1:45:04Speaker 4: he made the obvious decision. He didn't. He didn't. He did.
- 1:45:07Speaker 4: A lot of the people saying that are the same
- 1:45:10Speaker 4: people who wanted them to take JJ McCarthy.
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: So yeah, so I just I feel really good about
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: that pick.
- 1:45:15Speaker 4: I think we all do.
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: And they went through free agency. And if you want
- 1:45:19Speaker 2: to blame Elliott Woolf for this, then then fine, Like
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: I'm not going to tell you how to think. But
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: they went through free agency, and they tried to throw
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: a bag of money at Calvin Ridley, and Calvin Ridley
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: just didn't want to come here. They couldn't attract him
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: to come here. He picked the Titans over the Patriots.
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: But really, just talking to some of the Tennessee people
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: last week in the lead up to that game, they
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: felt like it was never the Patriots versus the Titans.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: It was really the Titans versus the Jaguars, right going
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: back to Jacksonville, Like the Patriots were kind of the
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: third team and that entire thing. So they couldn't get
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: Calvin Ridley, they couldn't lure Calvin Ridley here. So if
- 1:45:56Speaker 2: you want to criticize Elliott wolf for not being a
- 1:45:59Speaker 2: better closer in terms of that deal, then I guess
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: I can hear that, but the top of the market
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: free agents were not interested in signing with the Patriots.
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: They couldn't get those guys to take their money like,
- 1:46:12Speaker 2: they just couldn't. So that was a big piece of it.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: And then the draft is where I really have my
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: second guesses. But what I'm getting at is next offseason.
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: And I understand that there's not a lot of faith
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: in Elliott Wolf running the show next off season for
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: some people. But next off season to me is the
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: off season where I need to see multiple blue chip
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: caliber players added to this roster. You don't have a quarterback,
- 1:46:44Speaker 2: like you don't need a quarterback. Excuse me, as whatever
- 1:46:46Speaker 2: it's not, it's not on the list. And so now
- 1:46:49Speaker 2: when you have your first round draft pick, you're gonna
- 1:46:52Speaker 2: be taking a position player. You're not gonna be taking
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: a quarterback, which is huge. Don't And and this is
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: maybe another piece of it too for me, as you
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: and I are as big of draft nerds as you'll
- 1:47:02Speaker 2: find in this market, I think I'm comfortable with saying
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: that that we are two of the guys that nerd
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: out more about the draft. I watch them when the
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: time comes that nerd out about the draft more than
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: just about anybody. It is incredibly hard to build your
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: team on Day two and day three picks. So when
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: you take the day one pick out, because that has
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: to go to the quarterback. And what we're really talking
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: about is Cadaen Wallace and Leyden Robinson and Marcella's dial.
- 1:47:32Speaker 4: Especially when you miss runs a key position.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Jaheim Bell, Like we're talking about guys, Yeah, Javon Baker,
- 1:47:40Speaker 2: Jalen Polk is the one that I will not give them, you.
- 1:47:43Speaker 4: Said day two and three. I know, but what do
- 1:47:45Speaker 4: you mean not give them? What do you mean?
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: I guess I should have rephrased from day two and three.
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: You're right, I did phrase it that way. Outside of
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: the top fifty, all right. Anything outside of the top
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: fifty to me is you're you're playing darts. Yeah, you're
- 1:48:00Speaker 2: throwing dart.
- 1:48:01Speaker 4: You want to hit on one or two of those
- 1:48:02Speaker 4: guys ideally?
- 1:48:03Speaker 2: Yeah, And when you say hit, it's that they can
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: play in the NFL. It's not that those guys are
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: star players for you on your team. It's that you
- 1:48:11Speaker 2: hit on a guy, uh, you know, in the third
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: round that can competently play the position you drafted him.
- 1:48:18Speaker 2: To play. That's a different conversation than what the Patriots see.
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: The Patriots need frontline, blue chip, top of the roster talent,
- 1:48:26Speaker 2: so they're not talking about guys that just fill in
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: the roster. Right, So I give them that grace because
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: this off season they're gonna have one hundred million dollars
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: in cap space. I don't I gave him one off
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: season for the excuse that nobody wants to come here.
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: I don't give you two.
- 1:48:44Speaker 4: Right now that they've seen Drake May, the hope is.
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: That close the deal?
- 1:48:50Speaker 3: Uh?
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: And then Drake May. Remember when they sent Tom Brady
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: and Kelly Olynnock to try to send Kevin Durant signed
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: Kevin Durant? Where's that on the cape on the Vineyard?
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: It was actually as actually the Hampton and the Hampton's.
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: Whatever, Get Drake May and throw Jason Tatum on the
- 1:49:05Speaker 4: Oh no it'll be April. He'll be playing, but maybe
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: they have an off day. Throw Jason Tatum on the
- 1:49:10Speaker 4: plane out there to go get your receiver.
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So that that's I gave him one off season
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: with that, right, You really don't have an identity, you
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: don't have a culture. Nobody knows what's going on here.
- 1:49:19Speaker 2: It's it's a tough situation to walk into as a
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: free agent with options like Calvin Ridley, like picking the
- 1:49:26Speaker 2: Patriots in that spot, it was always a little bit unrealistic.
- 1:49:30Speaker 2: So I gave him that for one year. Next offseason,
- 1:49:33Speaker 2: I don't give him that. And with the draft right now,
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: and it's early, and I know everybody's kind of has
- 1:49:38Speaker 2: this take right now that the draft stinks sat aside
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: of Drake May, but calling for what it is, it
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: doesn't look like a.
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: Great draft anything.
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and the pick that I really hold against them
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: a lot is Jalen Polk. And again, just like with Caleb,
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: this isn't revisionist history. I wrote it at the time,
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: I wasn't the biggest fan of Jalen Polk's coming into
- 1:49:59Speaker 2: this draft. I'm not saying I thought that he's stunk
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: or couldn't play. I definitely didn't see this Like I
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: thought that he was going to be like everybody else
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: kind of did, like a steady Jacoby Meyers, Tyler Boyd
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: maybe you know, type of player. Like I thought that
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: that was sort of where he was going to fit
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: into an NFL hierarchy, probably like a solid to low
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: end number two receiver, right, And that's good. The Patriots
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: needed somebody like that. I think they still need somebody
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: like that. But my concerns with him are all the
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: concerns that we're seeing on the field, you know, which
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: is separation ability, diamondamic route running ability, the reliance on
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: contested catches or catches in traffic, and finishing through contact.
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: It's one thing to finish through contact and make all
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: those contested catches playing at the college level. This level,
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: the physicality is much more significant. And maybe it's just
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: an adjudtment that he has to go through, but he
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: that skill was always going to make or break his
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: NFL career. Yeah, whether he could finish through contact at
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: this level or not was always going to determine his
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: success or failure in the NFL, and so far he
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: hasn't been able to. So right now, that pick is
- 1:51:16Speaker 2: looking trending towards the wrong direction. I hate using the
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: word bust this early on in a player's career, but
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: it's not trending in a great direction.
- 1:51:25Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:51:25Speaker 4: I also think when you look at and there was
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: reporting at the time that they were considering moving into
- 1:51:29Speaker 4: the back end the first round and yeah, whether that
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: be for a receiver like Xavier ly Get or maybe
- 1:51:35Speaker 4: a tackle. You know, what would that have cost? Probably
- 1:51:37Speaker 4: that what was it, thirty fifth pick that that whatever
- 1:51:41Speaker 4: their original second round pick was thirty fifth, thirty six,
- 1:51:43Speaker 4: and you had all those picks, stock Pole in the fourth.
- 1:51:46Speaker 4: So if you could Jalen Polk and then one of
- 1:51:50Speaker 4: Leyden Robinson or Javon Baker. Yeah, instead of those guys,
- 1:51:55Speaker 4: you could have had xavierly Get, or you could have
- 1:51:56Speaker 4: had Tyler Geitton or whoever. Right, Patrick Paulman like starting
- 1:52:01Speaker 4: to look like maybe investing those picks and moving up
- 1:52:04Speaker 4: might have helped them out more.
- 1:52:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a tough one and I think it's also tough.
- 1:52:08Speaker 2: And I again, you can go look up my wide
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: receiver rankings, Like you traded the pick that was Lad McConkie,
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: and Lad McConkie's had a much better rookie season than
- 1:52:19Speaker 2: Jalen Polk has has been much more productive.
- 1:52:21Speaker 4: And Ladi McConkie's.
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: The difference between the two of them was Lad McConkie
- 1:52:24Speaker 2: was much better and more dynamic at the top of
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: his routes to create separation. He was a much better,
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: more you know not much better route runner necessarily, but
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: like just a more dynamic route runner, more explosive route runner.
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: Then Jalen Polk was in college and so far Lad
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: McConkie has been a hit for the Chargers and your
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: guy hasn't been. So that group of five we always
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: said this at the time. You know, Polk, mcconkee, leget Coleman,
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Kean coleman in Buffalo. I think there was one more
- 1:52:53Speaker 2: right that went and that uh in that run in
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: the early second Rad McConkie, McConkie, Coleman, Polk.
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: There's one. There's one or two more. I think that
- 1:53:04Speaker 4: was it. Like well, Brian Thomas Junior went no, no,
- 1:53:07Speaker 4: I'm not gonna like like twenty twenty five draft hang.
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: On well Worthy obviously is one of them too, but
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: he was a worthy one of twenty eight. Yeah.
- 1:53:15Speaker 4: Oh, Piersall went at thirty one, get Coleman. So four
- 1:53:18Speaker 4: in a row. Pierre saw to get Coleman, McConkie, the
- 1:53:21Speaker 4: last two picks the first, the first two picks of
- 1:53:23Speaker 4: the second, Patriots had the mconkee pick. They traded out.
- 1:53:26Speaker 4: They moved down a couple spots for a Polk.
- 1:53:28Speaker 2: So he's going to be compared to those guys, fair
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: or not, for the rest of his NFL career, And
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: right now it's looking like all those guys are contributing
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: more to their teams than Jalen Polk. Although I will
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: take a small victory lap on Keon Coleman because yeah,
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: he's been great. Yeah he's been exactly what I thought.
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: All right, let's take this call from Tim and and
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: then we'll wrap up the show. What's up Tim?
- 1:53:50Speaker 6: Hey, guys, let's do a Boston Sports minute here. My
- 1:53:53Speaker 6: Celtics will loss bother you at all. I'm not sure
- 1:53:55Speaker 6: how many teams would be in that game down two
- 1:53:57Speaker 6: of the three best players, but I mean it was
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: the first good defense they faced, and they got held
- 1:54:01Speaker 6: to forty points in the first half. I mean, I'm
- 1:54:03Speaker 6: glad they figured it out in the third, but still
- 1:54:05Speaker 6: a little worrying. What do you guys think about Kada?
- 1:54:07Speaker 6: Do you see anything real in him?
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: I love this help out there.
- 1:54:10Speaker 4: Thanks thanks for the car literally talking about this earlier a.
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: Little Boston Sports minute. Why God threw a throwback my
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: thoughts on the Celtics. I am never going to panic
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: over a game in November. It's just way too early
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: in the season for me to feel that way, and
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: they've really played great outside of this first half last
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: night in that game, But I would say that the
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: one thing that does concern me, like a tiny little bit,
- 1:54:38Speaker 2: I guess with the Celtics is that right now they've
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: been really reliant on like Peyton Pritchard and Derek White
- 1:54:44Speaker 2: and those guys just unking up threes and making them
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: a little bit too much. But maybe that's just because
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: you know, Brezingis and Jalen are Is playing and they
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: become a little bit more balanced. So once those guys
- 1:54:55Speaker 2: get back. But overall, I'm not concerned at all. I'm
- 1:54:58Speaker 2: not super concerned.
- 1:54:59Speaker 4: One thing from last night, and you kind of mentioned
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: that the need to make threes with the Warriors didn't
- 1:55:04Speaker 4: I don't know why they didn't do it. More was
- 1:55:06Speaker 4: they just came right up and played essentially like when
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: I say press coverage, I mean in the football sense. Yeah,
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: press coverage of the on the guys with the ball
- 1:55:14Speaker 4: and dared them to drive to the basket. And that
- 1:55:17Speaker 4: possession the last possession at the end of the first half.
- 1:55:19Speaker 4: Here we go again, talking possession at the end of
- 1:55:21Speaker 4: the first half. It's it's I think it was was
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: Derek White and Drew Holliday or Peyton Pritchard and Drew Holiday.
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: The two of them are just kind of stay next
- 1:55:30Speaker 4: to each other at the top of the key, passing
- 1:55:32Speaker 4: the ball back and forth. Well, the Warriors defenders are
- 1:55:35Speaker 4: right there in their chest, like Tatum needed to move
- 1:55:38Speaker 4: off the ball or go to the basket or something.
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: And it goes back to what's been a core problem
- 1:55:43Speaker 4: for this team, which is when the three is not falling,
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: what's playing b playing. Bee has been attacking the basket,
- 1:55:48Speaker 4: but their two best players in attacking the basket are
- 1:55:51Speaker 4: Jalen Brown and Chris SOPs Porzingis. So, you know, to
- 1:55:54Speaker 4: lose by six the way they played without those two guys,
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: I'm not super worried about it, you know, late in
- 1:56:00Speaker 4: the game. I think they could have had some better possessions.
- 1:56:03Speaker 4: The one thing is like, yeah, it would have been
- 1:56:05Speaker 4: nice to beat Steve Kerr after the whole Olympics thing.
- 1:56:07Speaker 4: But Tatum played well. I do like Kita now you
- 1:56:10Speaker 4: put him, you called it Robert Wakes.
- 1:56:12Speaker 2: I'll get to that in a second. All right, just
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: one really quick thought and then we'll get to that.
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: So last night. One thing that I did notice, and
- 1:56:19Speaker 2: they love the high pick and roll action, and the
- 1:56:23Speaker 2: Warriors kept on pushing them to further and further out,
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: and so now all of a sudden, the high pick
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: and roll is happening like almost at.
- 1:56:31Speaker 4: Half court, right, but you're not able to just pull
- 1:56:33Speaker 4: up the three.
- 1:56:34Speaker 2: Yeah, And I thought that was a big reason why.
- 1:56:36Speaker 2: And you know, we'll get to Takeda here in a second,
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: but the big reason why they're saying the Celtics were
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: really successful with the high pick and roll is that
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: they they had that ability to get to the nail
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: right right at the free throw line. And when you
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: get to the nail, and then you would always have
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: a guy in the dunker spot, right, and it just
- 1:56:55Speaker 2: kind of opens up almost like in football, where you
- 1:56:58Speaker 2: have like levels to the offense where you have like
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: the three point shooter, you have the guy at the
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: nail at the free throw line, and then you have
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: the guy in the dunker spot right by the basket.
- 1:57:07Speaker 2: And when the Warriors were pushing them out, like how
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: many times I felt like Jason Tatum high pick and
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: roll is getting the ball at like almost on the logo,
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: and I'm like, well, this doesn't know good like you
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: can't shoot from out here. So yeah, I saw a
- 1:57:21Speaker 2: little bit of that with the Warriors defense.
- 1:57:23Speaker 4: And now you look for and look, it'll change when
- 1:57:25Speaker 4: when Brad they were able to play that way because
- 1:57:27Speaker 4: Brown and more importantly Porzingis weren't in their play. Yeah,
- 1:57:30Speaker 4: a little bit of a blueprint game maybe for the Celtics,
- 1:57:32Speaker 4: showing a way to play them and we'll see, Like
- 1:57:35Speaker 4: I wouldn't be surprised, it's I know if the Nets Friday,
- 1:57:39Speaker 4: their next big game is they have the Hawks for
- 1:57:42Speaker 4: the NBA Cup, I think one Monday or Tuesday.
- 1:57:44Speaker 2: I kind of like the NBA Cup? Is that a
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: bad take?
- 1:57:46Speaker 4: I hate that?
- 1:57:47Speaker 3: I like it.
- 1:57:47Speaker 4: I wish they didn't nonsense with the floors.
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: The floors non like I remember last year when they
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: had to score a certain amount of points to make
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: the knock around. I was into it.
- 1:57:56Speaker 4: Look it's fun, it makes it early it Now I
- 1:57:59Speaker 4: worry they're going to expand it like every good thing,
- 1:58:01Speaker 4: like don't take it too.
- 1:58:02Speaker 2: Far, but give your quick anyway, because.
- 1:58:05Speaker 4: They well it's I wouldn't be surprised they start seeing
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: that defense from they have like the Hawks, they have
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: the Calves coming up. He's a good player. He's a
- 1:58:13Speaker 4: good player. You know how how I've long been annoyed
- 1:58:17Speaker 4: that they don't seem to value height or size or
- 1:58:20Speaker 4: ability at the rim. They played basketball and they don't
- 1:58:22Speaker 4: like tall guys. It's true, but like you have a
- 1:58:24Speaker 4: seven footer can't shoot a lick, but he can. He's
- 1:58:28Speaker 4: a factor at the rim on both ends of the floor.
- 1:58:30Speaker 4: Not saying that has to be your superstar. He's not
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: prime shack. They shouldn't treat him like it. But he
- 1:58:34Speaker 4: can give you a good ten to twelve minutes a night.
- 1:58:36Speaker 4: And when he comes in the game, the energy changes
- 1:58:39Speaker 4: every time. When they put him in late in the third,
- 1:58:42Speaker 4: early in the fourth quarter and he blocks a shot
- 1:58:44Speaker 4: or he puts down to the you know, a big
- 1:58:46Speaker 4: alley oop or something, and like for these teams that
- 1:58:48Speaker 4: are going to defend the Celtics and take away the three,
- 1:58:52Speaker 4: they kind of have to change it up a little
- 1:58:54Speaker 4: bit when he's on the floor. So I don't think
- 1:58:56Speaker 4: he's Robert Williams. Robert Williams was another level of explosive.
- 1:58:59Speaker 4: That was my comparison. He Robert willis a Rober Williams
- 1:59:02Speaker 4: also six nine.
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: But he's like, at worst right now, the way he's
- 1:59:06Speaker 2: playing right now, he's like discount Robert Williams. Right, he
- 1:59:09Speaker 2: so Robert.
- 1:59:10Speaker 4: Williams remember had that little bit of a jumper. He
- 1:59:12Speaker 4: could also run up and down the floor. Kita is
- 1:59:14Speaker 4: not as big of a part of the fast break. Yeah,
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: and Rob Rob right, but like again, I think just
- 1:59:21Speaker 4: giving you I'm trying to I'm blanking on the name.
- 1:59:25Speaker 4: Who's the guy that had a couple of years ago
- 1:59:26Speaker 4: they got at the trade deadline and he was just like, no,
- 1:59:28Speaker 4: they didn't. He played in Toronto for a long time. Toronto.
- 1:59:32Speaker 2: No, uh are you thinking of Capella?
- 1:59:34Speaker 3: No?
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, it was that's who I think
- 1:59:36Speaker 2: of when Seuta he's bigger.
- 1:59:39Speaker 4: He wasn't like a great player, but.
- 1:59:42Speaker 2: He's an energy big you know that's what that's Okada
- 1:59:44Speaker 2: is and uh.
- 1:59:45Speaker 4: Amir Johnson Oh yeah yeah. So it's were like he
- 1:59:48Speaker 4: didn't play a lot, but they put him here Johnson
- 1:59:50Speaker 4: in the game with all these shooters around him, and
- 1:59:52Speaker 4: he was just like, all right, you can't totally crash
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: the three point line. Yeah, because we have this guy
- 1:59:56Speaker 4: and he'd give him, he'd give him ever play. He
- 1:59:59Speaker 4: was also six or nine.
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: But I like Kida perfect uh rim running five like
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: you know, just exactly what they need for their type
- 2:00:06Speaker 2: of offense, and they're gonna be spaced in five out
- 2:00:09Speaker 2: and all that kind of stuff. So now you have
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: a guy that can you know, be there at the
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: rim with offensive rebound, dunk on dudes, all that kind
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: of stuff. I really like his game and I like
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: how his game fits with them, And I also think
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: that you know, you look at the East and you
- 2:00:23Speaker 2: look at some of the teams they might need to
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: go through, like imagine in a series against Joel Embiid
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: in the sixers, and yeah, he's going to be a
- 2:00:31Speaker 2: pain in the butt to joelan and be because.
- 2:00:32Speaker 4: Of how energetic he assuming place. You got another one
- 2:00:35Speaker 4: like Jared Allen good.
- 2:00:36Speaker 2: Play, yeah, yeah, just you know, painting the butt guy
- 2:00:39Speaker 2: that you know, Joelan b doesn't want to run around
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: with a guy like that, Like he doesn't want to
- 2:00:43Speaker 2: hustle on the boards with a guy like that. Uh
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: that That's what That's what Keida brings to the table.
- 2:00:48Speaker 2: So I do like him.
- 2:00:49Speaker 4: He tailed Celtics talk going to catch twenty two.
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: There you go and see that some people definitely shut
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: us off. That's okay. We were two hours into the
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: show anyways, and we had uh, We're about to wrap
- 2:00:59Speaker 2: it up really quickly to end this Boston Sports minute.
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: You have thirty seconds on the Red Sox offseason where
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: they are apparently suitors for Juan Soto, which none of
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: us believe.
- 2:01:09Speaker 4: I don't know about once I've seen today. Like Taoscar Hernandez,
- 2:01:12Speaker 4: Garrett Crochet would be good additions, would be Righty's please?
- 2:01:17Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:01:17Speaker 2: He sound so much like White Sox. We're not on Soo,
- 2:01:20Speaker 2: but we're gonna go for uh, Tioscar Hernandez.
- 2:01:23Speaker 4: Look, they're never gonna get soda. If they added like
- 2:01:26Speaker 4: Hernandez and Crochet and another right handed bat and the bullpen,
- 2:01:30Speaker 4: like those four collectively would be more than Soto to me,
- 2:01:33Speaker 4: Like they need multiples like the Patriots. Right Soto is
- 2:01:37Speaker 4: you add the quarterback and that's gonna make a difference.
- 2:01:39Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, there's eight other
- 2:01:42Speaker 4: guys in the lineup and they just don't have the
- 2:01:44Speaker 4: pieces right now. I'd rather see them take a wider approach,
- 2:01:47Speaker 4: but get some legitimate like n He's not Soto, but
- 2:01:51Speaker 4: he's a legitimate middle of the order. Bat. Yeah, you know,
- 2:01:53Speaker 4: Crochet is a legitimate top end of the rotation. Guy.
- 2:01:56Speaker 4: I'll believe when I see it.
- 2:01:57Speaker 2: Yeah, So tonight Bruins Tonight, see if they rebound from
- 2:02:02Speaker 2: getting blown out again by the Toronto Mapleus the other night.
- 2:02:05Speaker 2: So in my house, the Bruins are a big topic
- 2:02:09Speaker 2: of stress right now, and they'll is our household. So
- 2:02:13Speaker 2: hopefully they turn it around. And tonight I'll probably watch
- 2:02:15Speaker 2: that Bruins game, maybe watch a little bit of Baltimore Cincinnata.
- 2:02:19Speaker 2: That's gonna be a fun game, and I might crack
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: open a little bud Light. And it's easy to drink,
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: it's easy to enjoy. It's bud Light, the official beer
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: sponsor of the New England Patriots. Thanks for let it
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: sticking around and letting us do a throwback Boston Sports
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: minute from the Cleanest Days. People remember that it's a
- 2:02:36Speaker 2: good time. You still do it right.
- 2:02:37Speaker 4: Occasionally we have that's usually an off season thing. We
- 2:02:40Speaker 4: don't do it with thunder.
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: All right, We'll be back next week the Los Angeles Ramps,
