- 0:01Speaker 1: The Joe Rogan experience. So tell me what you think
- 0:03Speaker 1: about this weekend. Islam versus Ian Gary.
- 0:07Speaker 2: So what's fascinating about this matchup is how well Ian
- 0:13Speaker 2: Gary can control the range. I think he's going to
- 0:18Speaker 2: be much bigger than Islam in a sense of height,
- 0:21Speaker 2: reach advantage. In terms of size, I never thought Ian
- 0:25Speaker 2: was the biggest welterweight. I still don't think he is.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Well, he can't be. He's so tall. He can't be thick.
- 0:30Speaker 2: No, but in a sense, even when you're talking just
- 0:33Speaker 2: from a weight standpoint, from what he was walking around at,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I forgot what he told me he walked around at,
- 0:37Speaker 2: but he wasn't cutting a whole lot of weight. I
- 0:39Speaker 2: want to say off the top of my head, maybe
- 0:41Speaker 2: 10 pounds.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Which is why he's so healthy. Yeah. He has such energy.
- 0:45Speaker 2: So I go, you're cutting just this and you're going
- 0:48Speaker 2: out there and doing this to these guys who are
- 0:50Speaker 2: essentially bigger, heavier guys, but he's got the speed advantage.
- 0:55Speaker 2: The thing about Islam, he's such a complete fighter. He
- 0:58Speaker 2: could do everything. But this will be the first time
- 1:01Speaker 2: he's got a test with a guy who's a long man.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And can he get inside, take him down? I don't
- 1:07Speaker 2: think he's going to stand up and strike with him.
- 1:09Speaker 2: He can, but I just don't think that's the path
- 1:11Speaker 2: to victory against a guy like Ian.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I don't think he has any plans of standing up
- 1:15Speaker 1: and striking with him other than as a means to
- 1:16Speaker 1: an end. Yeah. And his grappling is so high level.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Islam's grappling right now is at the top of the
- 1:24Speaker 1: food chain. Jamie, pull up that card, the one this weekend.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So we take a look at it. Yeah. What do
- 1:32Speaker 1: you think about the Ian Gary Islam fight? If you
- 1:35Speaker 1: had to predict.
- 1:37Speaker 2: If I had to predict.
- 1:39Speaker 1: If you're like on the UFC desk and they put
- 1:40Speaker 1: you on the spot.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Okay. Islam Makachev did a really good job neutralizing JDM's boxing.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Didn't really give him an opportunity to do anything. He
- 1:51Speaker 2: chopped his legs away with the calf kicks. Controlled him
- 1:55Speaker 2: in a clinch. The takedowns were relatively easy. He didn't
- 1:58Speaker 2: even really have to set it up with, like, hands.
- 1:59Speaker 2: He kind of just shot and just took them down
- 2:01Speaker 2: at will. Ian Gary now, on the other hand, he's
- 2:05Speaker 2: done a good job of showing takedown resilience. We saw
- 2:08Speaker 2: that with Bilal Muhammad. Is Bilal Muhammad Makachev?
- 2:12Speaker 1: No. No.
- 2:13Speaker 2: He's not.
- 2:13Speaker 1: No.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But it definitely showed something. He did a good job
- 2:17Speaker 2: with Shafqat as well, who is a bigger guy, was
- 2:20Speaker 2: able to defend a bunch of times. I forgot if
- 2:22Speaker 2: it was Shafqat who had his back, but he was
- 2:24Speaker 2: able to defend.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Shafqat's the guy who beat him. So Shavkat is the
- 2:27Speaker 1: one loss that he has. And it was the grappling
- 2:30Speaker 1: that Shavkat got him with. But he also blew out
- 2:33Speaker 1: Shavkat's knee. That's why Shavkat has had all these surgeries.
- 2:36Speaker 2: That oblique kick.
- 2:37Speaker 1: That kick is so nasty. That's the one thing that
- 2:40Speaker 1: I wonder. Should we not have that?
- 2:42Speaker 2: You don't really like that one.
- 2:46Speaker 1: You can defend it by not getting hit by it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: But the problem is if you get hit by it,
- 2:51Speaker 1: like Khalil Roundtree and Modestus Bukakis– When he went, turned
- 2:55Speaker 1: his knee sideways.
- 2:57Speaker 2: He stomped that thing.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Stomped it. And that's a career changer. Like, it could
- 3:01Speaker 1: be a career ender. Bukowskis came back, but.
- 3:05Speaker 2: But this is two years now, right?
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yeah. For Shafqat, he's been out? Yep. He's had multiple surgeries.
- 3:10Speaker 1: He had it done, and then it blew out again.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Had to get it done again. Yeah.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I just don't know. The range, the reach advantage. I
- 3:18Speaker 2: think Ian does a great job of using his lateral footwork.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. He's fast.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Makhachev's not the fastest guy.
- 3:24Speaker 1: No.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But what he is, he's imposing. He knows how to
- 3:27Speaker 2: cut you off. That Southpaw stance, I think, causes some
- 3:31Speaker 2: problems for a lot of people. He's only lost, what,
- 3:34Speaker 2: one time to the Adriano Martins with the head kick knockout?
- 3:38Speaker 1: A punch. Was it a punch? Yeah, he got punched.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Oh, I thought it was a head kick. But either way,
- 3:43Speaker 2: I think Ian's going to have to look to something
- 3:45Speaker 2: like that, see if there's maybe some of those old
- 3:47Speaker 2: tendencies that that punch was able to land. That was
- 3:50Speaker 2: also such a younger version of Islam. I just don't
- 3:52Speaker 2: see him making those mistakes again.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a long time ago.
- 3:55Speaker 2: How does Ian win? He's going to have to point
- 3:57Speaker 2: fight and sit on the outside and hope not to
- 3:58Speaker 2: get tired going backwards the whole time.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 4:01Speaker 2: And he got tired doing that against Carlos Prates. So
- 4:04Speaker 2: this is a tough one for Gary. Can he get
- 4:07Speaker 2: the upset? Of course, it's fighting. We just saw this
- 4:09Speaker 2: with Gaethje and Teporia. But I would say Islam has
- 4:14Speaker 2: the one shortcut way to win. Push him against the cage.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Take him down. And even if he pushes him against
- 4:20Speaker 2: the cage, I'm curious to know if They're curious to
- 4:23Speaker 2: see if Gary can do damage in the clinch. Whenever
- 4:26Speaker 2: I'm in the clinch with somebody, I always tell the guys,
- 4:28Speaker 2: look for your knuckles and hit the eyeball.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Hit the nose.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Hit the soft spots that's going to make this guy
- 4:34Speaker 2: uncomfortable in the clinch, not looking for his foot sweeps,
- 4:36Speaker 2: where he's comfortable just resting on you, looking to set
- 4:39Speaker 2: up his takedown, his next transition. And I learned this
- 4:43Speaker 2: from Brian Carraway, my first pro loss in the UFC.
- 4:46Speaker 2: After being 5-0, we clinch. I take him down. But
- 4:49Speaker 2: in the clinch, while I'm going for the single leg,
- 4:51Speaker 2: I have his leg up in the air. He's leaning
- 4:53Speaker 2: over my back, and he's taking his knuckles, and he's
- 4:55Speaker 2: just hitting me in the eye.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Swallowed up my whole eye.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I was like, what the fuck is he hitting me with?
- 5:00Speaker 2: And I go back, and I watch the tape, and
- 5:01Speaker 2: I get to see, and I learn that. So I
- 5:03Speaker 2: always share these little tricks and stuff with guys when
- 5:06Speaker 2: I'm teaching them. So if Gary can land some good
- 5:08Speaker 2: damage in those positions, kind of deter Islam a little
- 5:11Speaker 2: bit or make him a little bit more sloppy on
- 5:13Speaker 2: his finishes, it could cause some chaotic scrambles where he
- 5:17Speaker 2: could potentially get to a good position and And maybe
- 5:19Speaker 2: we see Islam on his back again, kind of like
- 5:21Speaker 2: what happened with Volk. And when he was there with Volk,
- 5:24Speaker 2: it did not look good.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And, of course, it's round five, so it's got to
- 5:27Speaker 2: be fair.
- 5:28Speaker 1: It was also a fight where the time was all
- 5:30Speaker 1: fucked up and he didn't have as much time to rehydrate.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, they did say something like that.
- 5:36Speaker 1: He was compromised in that fight because of that, because
- 5:38Speaker 1: he didn't have as much time to rehydrate because they
- 5:40Speaker 1: were fighting in Australia and they were trying to fight
- 5:43Speaker 1: on U.S. time.
- 5:47Speaker 2: This one is the one that I'm really... Excited about too.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Because Jillian is so fucking good on the ground. Top position,
- 5:55Speaker 2: even off of her back. Mackenzie Dern is great off
- 5:58Speaker 2: of her back. The top position too, she's more decorated
- 6:04Speaker 2: in terms of the jiu-jitsu space. On the feet, she's
- 6:08Speaker 2: more reckless. She's throwing caution to the wind because she
- 6:11Speaker 2: doesn't care. She's not afraid to get her pretty face
- 6:13Speaker 2: messed up. She's going to go in there and go
- 6:15Speaker 2: after you. She's just attacking. Jillian, on the other hand,
- 6:18Speaker 2: not as physical on the feet. Not a big puncher.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Not a big kicker. She sets everything up looking for
- 6:24Speaker 2: the takedown or the clinch to take you down, get
- 6:26Speaker 2: to the back. But when she gets there and she
- 6:28Speaker 2: gets you down, her ground and pound, it's nasty.
- 6:32Speaker 1: The question is, is she going to be able to
- 6:34Speaker 1: do it to a world champion like Mackenzie Dern?
- 6:36Speaker 2: To a good position. Some of those other girls, she
- 6:38Speaker 2: gets the back mount or full mount, and she's able
- 6:41Speaker 2: to land these solid elbows, beat them up in that position.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Mackenzie's a jiu-jitsu world champion.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It's a different world. That's the hard part.
- 6:48Speaker 2: It's going to be interesting.
- 6:49Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting. Go to the other wrestler card.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Go back to it. Because I'm interested to see how
- 6:57Speaker 1: Abdul Malik recovers from his last fight. against Bulgari. Bulgari's
- 7:03Speaker 1: a monster, dude. That's a guy in the 185 pound
- 7:07Speaker 1: division that's a real fucking problem. Yeah. He's a world-class striker.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I mean, he has a victory over Pereira in glory.
- 7:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the guy.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah. One victory. And then he got starched in the rematch.
- 7:20Speaker 2: But the thing with Malik is he was trying to
- 7:23Speaker 2: go for the takedowns, but the setups were like, in
- 7:26Speaker 2: my opinion, from a wrestler standpoint. So I may be
- 7:28Speaker 2: a little bit unfair with this criticism, but I just
- 7:31Speaker 2: didn't think they were that good.
- 7:33Speaker 1: He was also dealing with striking that was like way
- 7:36Speaker 1: above and beyond him. Yeah. And that was part of
- 7:38Speaker 1: the problem is that in the transitions, like trying to
- 7:41Speaker 1: get close to him, you're dealing with a guy who's gigantic.
- 7:43Speaker 1: He's one of the tallest guys in the division. He's
- 7:45Speaker 1: so fucking big for 185, so long and so tall.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And on top of it, world-class striker. And he's coming
- 7:53Speaker 1: into his own as an MMA guy. And part of
- 7:55Speaker 1: the reason is because He's down there in Connecticut with
- 7:59Speaker 1: Glover and with Alex, and he's doing camps with those guys.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So his grappling is now on point, much more confident
- 8:06Speaker 1: on the feet, much more stable. But before that, I
- 8:10Speaker 1: thought Mansour was a real potential world champion. Yes.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But it's just so crazy. You can see somebody in
- 8:16Speaker 2: one fight, and I see him in the next one,
- 8:17Speaker 2: and you're just like, all right.
- 8:18Speaker 1: It was a bad loss, too. It was a bad loss.
- 8:20Speaker 1: It wasn't good. It was a lot of, like, see
- 8:22Speaker 1: if you can find that fight.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Leg kicks, the jabs.
- 8:26Speaker 1: He got beat up. So the thing was the amount
- 8:29Speaker 1: of damage that he took, because he's so tough, the
- 8:31Speaker 1: amount of damage he took before they stopped the fight
- 8:33Speaker 1: was pretty extraordinary. It was a lot of damage.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I was hoping he could get the fight down at
- 8:37Speaker 2: least once.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:39Speaker 2: But, yeah, he couldn't. It was a tough fight.
- 8:44Speaker 1: There's a lot of guys at 185 that are a
- 8:47Speaker 1: fucking problem, man. A lot of guys at 85 that
- 8:50Speaker 1: are a real problem.
- 8:51Speaker 2: But we need that in those divisions because those divisions
- 8:54Speaker 2: have been so thin for so long. Like there's a
- 8:56Speaker 2: couple of guys, right? But now you're starting to see more.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Like even like the lower weight classes, a guy who's
- 9:00Speaker 2: unranked like an Ethan Ewan.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:03Speaker 2: And you're like, I'm excited about this division because I
- 9:05Speaker 2: want to see how far I can go. You got
- 9:06Speaker 2: a guy like Mansoor and I can't say the other
- 9:09Speaker 2: guy's name.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Abdul? Abdul. No, that's my answer. Bulgari?
- 9:12Speaker 2: Bulgari. You got these two guys coming up.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You got Ataba Gautier? How about that motherfucker?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:17Speaker 1: He puts guys into orbit.
- 9:19Speaker 2: He fought our guy, Ozzy Diaz, the last one.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 2: That was a tough one.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It was a tough one. Yeah, this is the fight.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I mean... Mentzer is so tough that he was able
- 9:30Speaker 1: to keep this fight going where a lot of guys
- 9:32Speaker 1: would have got taken out early. But look at that. Yeah,
- 9:35Speaker 1: the elbows and the clinch, everything. He's just getting destroyed.
- 9:38Speaker 2: You see how he's even trapping the wrist and then
- 9:39Speaker 2: stepping in with the punches or stepping in with the elbows.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Clean right hand, elbow. It's just Mentzer is so tough.
- 9:46Speaker 1: He's so tough. He's just absorbing so much punishment. And finally,
- 9:51Speaker 1: they stop it. But before the stoppage.
- 9:53Speaker 2: He's waiting it all for him. The ref's like, get
- 9:55Speaker 2: out of here.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Before the stoppage, I think that was the end of
- 9:58Speaker 1: a round. I don't even know if that was. That
- 10:00Speaker 1: was the end of the round. Yeah, that wasn't the
- 10:01Speaker 1: actual stoppage. So if you keep going in the fight,
- 10:05Speaker 1: it gets even worse. I mean, the thing about stand-up
- 10:09Speaker 1: is when you're dealing with a guy who's a world
- 10:12Speaker 1: championship kickboxer and you can't take him down and he's
- 10:16Speaker 1: got really good takedown defense and he's got a reach advantage...
- 10:20Speaker 1: It's like everything possible that's terrible about what could happen
- 10:24Speaker 1: is going on.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Oh, that split right hand. Oh, my goodness.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 10:31Speaker 2: I'm surprised he didn't just face plant after that.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Well, he's so tough, man.
- 10:35Speaker 2: But that's the durability.
- 10:36Speaker 1: The durability, but the toughness is your problem is you
- 10:39Speaker 1: get so many holes punched in your card in one fight.
- 10:43Speaker 1: In one fight. Whereas if he got hit with one shot,
- 10:46Speaker 1: one big shot is bad. He'd get taken out, but
- 10:49Speaker 1: is not as bad as a prolonged beating over three rounds.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I always say, I call them dings.
- 10:55Speaker 1: There it is right there.
- 10:56Speaker 2: There's only so many dings you can have in your
- 10:58Speaker 2: career before.
- 10:59Speaker 1: It's just like. This is the final, his body just couldn't.
- 11:03Speaker 1: As tough as he is, and he's so tough, but
- 11:06Speaker 1: the problem is that's the kind of fight where in
- 11:09Speaker 1: boxing you wouldn't have, if you were a manager and
- 11:14Speaker 1: he was your guy, you would not have had him
- 11:16Speaker 1: fight him at this stage of his career. No, not
- 11:18Speaker 1: at all. You'd be like, this is not a fight
- 11:19Speaker 1: for you right now. We've got to really get our
- 11:22Speaker 1: striking better. There's growth to be had before you fight
- 11:26Speaker 1: that guy.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But you've got to know that. And I think sometimes fighters,
- 11:32Speaker 2: we can be so egotistical that I could beat anybody.
- 11:37Speaker 2: But sometimes it's nice to be like, you know what,
- 11:40Speaker 2: I could beat him, but just.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Not right now. Let me beat somebody else. We'll get
- 11:44Speaker 2: there when we get there. But the UFC does not
- 11:48Speaker 2: give you that opportunity. The UFC is like, here's the wolves.
- 11:51Speaker 2: You can say no, though.
- 11:53Speaker 1: You can, but you might get shelved for a long
- 11:56Speaker 1: fucking time if you say no. And a lot of
- 11:58Speaker 1: guys know that.
