- 0:00Speaker 1: Now, nine till noon weekdays.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Mark Simone.
- 0:03Speaker 1: More Mark.
- 0:05Speaker 2: On 710WOR.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, the best columnist in America. It's Michael Goodwin every Sunday,
- 0:13Speaker 1: every Wednesday in the New York Post. And if you
- 0:15Speaker 1: go to the New York Post website, all of his
- 0:17Speaker 1: columns are up there. And it's great to have him
- 0:19Speaker 1: back with us. Michael Goodwin, how you doing?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Good morning, Mark. Thank you.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Hey, I know they always say a Republican can't win
- 0:27Speaker 1: in New York. something's different this time. Bruce Blakeman is
- 0:30Speaker 1: a much stronger candidate. Don't you just feel that he's
- 0:33Speaker 1: got a real shot this time?
- 0:36Speaker 2: I hope so, Mark. I'm not 100% certain because the
- 0:42Speaker 2: big question in my mind is Mamdani's appearance with Hochul,
- 0:50Speaker 2: helping Hochul or hurting her. I think, and Bruce Blakeman,
- 0:56Speaker 2: I think, is responsible for a lot of this election
- 1:01Speaker 2: is about Mamdani and his year, his first year in office.
- 1:06Speaker 2: And Blateman, of course, thinks that Mamdani is poison to
- 1:12Speaker 2: voters around the state. He's very unpopular upstate, for example,
- 1:18Speaker 2: Mamdani is. So I think that is shaping up as
- 1:22Speaker 2: a turning point And it's fascinating in its own right
- 1:26Speaker 2: to talk about it, Mark, because Hochul invited this. Her
- 1:31Speaker 2: sense of weakness and uncertainty about her own campaign had
- 1:38Speaker 2: her close the race by spending part of almost every
- 1:43Speaker 2: day with Mamdani recently. And so she's really tied herself
- 1:50Speaker 2: to him and his socialist brigades. I think, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: even if she were to win, she's really ruined her
- 2:00Speaker 2: chances of getting anything done unless Mamdani approves it. I mean,
- 2:06Speaker 2: she's entirely flipped the script. Normally the governor is more
- 2:11Speaker 2: important and powerful in this relationship. She has handed all
- 2:16Speaker 2: of that power to Mamdani.
- 2:17Speaker 1: That's an interesting point. Now, um, Normally, they use oil prices,
- 2:22Speaker 1: gas prices. I don't know why Democrats think that's the
- 2:25Speaker 1: number one issue. It's never been the number one issue.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But as far as New York City, you've got to
- 2:29Speaker 1: carry 35% of it to win the governorship. New York City,
- 2:35Speaker 1: gas is definitely not an issue because probably 95% of
- 2:38Speaker 1: New Yorkers don't drive or buy any gas. That's right.
- 2:42Speaker 1: That'll help Blakeman. You think he'll get the 35% he
- 2:45Speaker 1: needs of New York City?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting. That number... I spoke to him about
- 2:51Speaker 2: this when we talked, and he said he knows the
- 2:58Speaker 2: history of all this, that Lee Zeldin and Donald Trump
- 3:04Speaker 2: both got 30% in the Zeldin 40 years ago and
- 3:09Speaker 2: Trump in 24. Both got 30% in the city and
- 3:14Speaker 2: lost the state by about six points. So that's why
- 3:21Speaker 2: Blateman says he's going to do better than 30%. And
- 3:25Speaker 2: you have to do better than 30%. Lee Zeldin once
- 3:30Speaker 2: said to me, if you get to 35% as a Republican,
- 3:36Speaker 2: it's hard to lose the race. If you cop out
- 3:41Speaker 2: under 35%, it's hard to win. And so I think
- 3:47Speaker 2: the city, of course, having so many more votes than
- 3:51Speaker 2: so much a disproportionate effect on the whole state. So
- 3:56Speaker 2: if he can get in that 33, the 36, the
- 3:59Speaker 2: 38 that he talked about with me, he's got a
- 4:03Speaker 2: real shot at winning. And I think that would be
- 4:08Speaker 2: a real pushback against Mamdani if more and more New
- 4:12Speaker 2: Yorkers vote against his candidate and vote for the opponent.
- 4:17Speaker 2: So there's a lot riding on the city outcome. Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Well, listen, Mamdani's got his younger, crazy, socialist-loving supporters. But
- 4:26Speaker 1: don't you think in New York City since the election
- 4:30Speaker 1: last year that there's a lot of other people, just
- 4:32Speaker 1: normal Democrats voted for him, kind of sorry they did,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and would like to have Blakeman as just a counter
- 4:38Speaker 1: of Mamdani?
- 4:41Speaker 2: Well, not to be too... numbers heavy here Mark but
- 4:47Speaker 2: Blakeman and I talked about the fact that Mamdani won
- 4:52Speaker 2: the mayoral race with 50.4% now obviously it was a
- 4:58Speaker 2: big field Andrew Cuomo for example but the point being
- 5:04Speaker 2: that he got over a million votes and a million
- 5:10Speaker 2: people voted against him so that If Blakeman can tap
- 5:18Speaker 2: into those anti-Mamdani voters, he would easily get the required
- 5:25Speaker 2: minimum to win the state. But he would really have
- 5:28Speaker 2: to harvest a lot of the anti-Mamdani voters to come
- 5:33Speaker 2: back and vote for him.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Do you think Andrew Cuomo has noticed that Kathy Hochul
- 5:41Speaker 1: hasn't called and asked him to come campaign for her?
- 5:49Speaker 2: I guess that she would be certifiably crazy if she
- 5:54Speaker 2: did that, right? Don't lock her up.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yeah. She hasn't asked Alvin Bragg to come campaign with her.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah. It's interesting about Cuomo, though, right? He was kind
- 6:07Speaker 2: of king of the hill for most of the three terms.
- 6:11Speaker 2: He was attorney general before that, right? And now, having
- 6:16Speaker 2: lost Imam Dhani, he's not even a second thought. I mean,
- 6:21Speaker 2: he's really disappeared from the public eye. And apparently he's
- 6:26Speaker 2: making a lot of money. Good for him. But there's
- 6:30Speaker 2: no hunger anywhere for Andrew Cuomo to endorse or to
- 6:36Speaker 2: campaign with a candidate. It does look like his time
- 6:41Speaker 2: has come and gone.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah, well, actually, I think it's more a case of
- 6:44Speaker 1: there's a real despising of Andrew Cuomo by everybody and
- 6:48Speaker 1: anybody in New York. Remember, he did flee Albany with
- 6:52Speaker 1: the police chasing him out of there, so.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but he almost, he came tantamizingly close to beating Mamdani.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So for me, that's something in his favor. And he
- 7:09Speaker 2: ran a lousy campaign, and he still got about, what, 70%
- 7:15Speaker 2: of the anti-Mamdani vote. He got over 750,000 votes, I think,
- 7:21Speaker 2: in the five boroughs.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, but you've got to put a giant asterisk on that.
- 7:25Speaker 1: That was with every Republican everywhere, including the president, telling
- 7:29Speaker 1: you to vote for him, and he still couldn't get
- 7:30Speaker 1: it done.
- 7:32Speaker 2: Right, right. Curtis Lewa was part of the problem. But
- 7:37Speaker 2: the real problem is Mamdani turned out. So many voters
- 7:42Speaker 2: who had not voted before. I mean, the piper of socialism. Yeah.
- 7:48Speaker 1: What do you think about the rest of the country?
- 7:50Speaker 1: It looks pretty good. If you ignore the fake polls,
- 7:53Speaker 1: it looks pretty good for Republicans with the Senate. Well,
- 7:56Speaker 1: what do you think about the House?
- 7:59Speaker 2: Well, it's interesting. Of course, you hear all the stock
- 8:02Speaker 2: of a blue wave. And then, well, maybe it won't
- 8:05Speaker 2: be a wave. We've heard this before. My friend Ed
- 8:10Speaker 2: Rollins always reminds me that there will be a lot
- 8:14Speaker 2: of people making up their minds in the last few days,
- 8:19Speaker 2: and the polls will never pick that up. Nobody polls
- 8:23Speaker 2: over the last weekend, and that's when a lot of
- 8:26Speaker 2: people make their decisions. So almost by definition, the polls
- 8:31Speaker 2: are going to get it wrong to the extent that
- 8:34Speaker 2: those people maybe some of them changing their minds. So
- 8:40Speaker 2: I don't believe the polls are a given in the
- 8:44Speaker 2: sense that I think there's a blue wave coming. I
- 8:48Speaker 2: think it's been really close, but I'm not convinced that
- 8:53Speaker 2: this election has been decided. I think it's still a
- 8:56Speaker 2: wide-open race for a lot of the seats in that
- 9:00Speaker 2: House and the Senate. Yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Hey, I never asked you this. The horse and carriages. Now,
- 9:04Speaker 1: this Julie Menon flip-flops on that and says, well, it's
- 9:07Speaker 1: about safety. Well, only one person died from a horse
- 9:10Speaker 1: and carriage, whereas 133 have died from the e-bikes. Why
- 9:16Speaker 1: isn't there a push to get the e-bikes out of
- 9:17Speaker 1: Central Park?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. You know, Mark, you say flip-flop, talking about
- 9:23Speaker 2: the horses, I can hear a clip going. But the, yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 2: I think Julie Menon it's kind of hard to read.
- 9:34Speaker 2: She kind of talks a tough game, but in the end,
- 9:39Speaker 2: there's no real impact. There's very much a finger in
- 9:43Speaker 2: the air about which way the wind is blowing. So
- 9:46Speaker 2: I can't figure her out. I don't know that she's
- 9:49Speaker 2: a counterweight to Mamdani or just pretending to be before
- 9:53Speaker 2: she folds. So it's very hard to read whether the
- 9:57Speaker 2: council in any way... can stand up to the mayor.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Very good point. Well, Michael Goodwin, great as always. You
- 10:05Speaker 1: can read his columns every Sunday, every Wednesday in the
- 10:09Speaker 1: New York Post. And if you go to the New
- 10:10Speaker 1: York Post website, all of his columns are posted up there.
- 10:12Speaker 1: You should read them. Michael Goodwin, thanks for being with us.
- 10:17Speaker 2: My pleasure. Thank you, Mike. All right.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Take care. Hey, we've got a lot coming up in
- 10:22Speaker 1: the next hour. In fact, Bruce Blakeman will be with
- 10:24Speaker 1: us in the next hour, so we'll get all the
- 10:26Speaker 1: latest from him. And then at noon, Buck Sexton, Clay Travis.
- 10:31Speaker 1: That is a great show every day, 12 noon. Then
- 10:35Speaker 1: at 3 o'clock, the most listened to radio show in America,
- 10:40Speaker 1: Sean Hannity. Although today, it will be me filling in
- 10:43Speaker 1: for Sean Hannity because he's on his honeymoon. That's right.
- 10:47Speaker 1: He got married over the weekend. He'll be on his honeymoon,
- 10:50Speaker 1: so I'll be doing the show today. Then at 6,
- 10:52Speaker 1: you got Jesse Kelly. Then, 9 o'clock, the funniest show
- 10:56Speaker 1: on radio, Jimmy Fallon, tonight at 9, on 710WOR.
