Transcript
- 0:00Dillon Gilbertson: Thank you.
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Welcome back to 22 Panels and the Heavy Metal Book Club. I'm joined by my brother Peter, my buddy Matt, Dylan Gilbertson of My Neighbor Necromancer fame, and tonight we are going to discuss the July 19th
- 0:19Tad Eggleston: 1779… Issue of Heavy Metal Magazine.
- 0:24Matt: With a beautiful, beautiful…
- 0:27Tad Eggleston: Richard Corbin cover.
- 0:29Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. How you doing?
- 0:33Matt: Not too bad.
- 0:36Peter Eggleston Connor: I was.
- 0:36Tad Eggleston: That's good.
- 0:37Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I feel like this issue was a significant upgrade from the last issue we were at.
- 0:42Dillon Gilbertson: Yes, significant. Significant and great.
- 0:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Boom.
- 0:46Dillon Gilbertson: A great, a great improvement.
- 0:49Dillon Gilbertson: We'll give it much props.
- 0:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they don't seem, at least so far, they don't seem to ever have more than…
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: One dud in a row.
- 1:03Tad Eggleston: You know, and, like, even the duds generally have, like.
- 1:08Tad Eggleston: There were a couple things worth…
- 1:10Tad Eggleston: worth it. I mean, I think… well, I mean…
- 1:13Tad Eggleston: We wound up all liking the same things, but we liked the Sinbad and the Alien.
- 1:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 1:21Matt: Definitely more to choose from in this issue, which is nice.
- 1:23Tad Eggleston: Yes, definitely more to choose from this issue.
- 1:27Dillon Gilbertson: There's one story in particular, and we'll talk about it when we get there, but, like, it's gonna be very hard to choose my favorite panel just from that story.
- 1:37Peter Eggleston Connor: That's fair.
- 1:38Dillon Gilbertson: The art in it is crazy.
- 1:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Is it a story without words?
- 1:43Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 1:43Matt: Is it… does it start with… is it Attila the frog?
- 1:46Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 1:47Matt: Oh, okay.
- 1:48Dillon Gilbertson: I did have a good laugh at that one at the end.
- 1:51Matt: I think it's great.
- 1:52Peter Eggleston Connor: I did like that one at the end, yeah.
- 1:55Dillon Gilbertson: Anyway…
- 1:56Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know if I liked it before the end, but I liked it.
- 1:58Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, before the end, I was like, I don't know if I like this comic, and then the end came, and I was like, oh, yeah, that's good. That's a good joke.
- 2:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, bum, bum.
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: So we lead, though, with a…
- 2:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Catgirl and the contents?
- 2:14Peter Eggleston Connor: And this weird picture, and right before our lead.
- 2:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, and don't forget the From Heavy Metal books.
- 2:23Tad Eggleston: Well, CACREL in the contents.
- 2:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 2:30Tad Eggleston: Night on Bald Mountain is the name of… The Corbin, Rick Courtney.
- 2:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, wow.
- 2:36Tad Eggleston: cover.
- 2:38Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't think that mountain's very… I'll… I'll shut it down. I'll take myself out.
- 2:48Dillon Gilbertson: This is…
- 2:49Tad Eggleston: And there's no trees or anything.
- 2:50Peter Eggleston Connor: On the air? I know we talked about the cover off-air, but…
- 2:56Dillon Gilbertson: The, the cover, the cover looks so… so… Zack Snyder…
- 3:02Dillon Gilbertson: Say what you will about him as a director, but, like, he's… he's an immaculate cinematographer in framing.
- 3:09Dillon Gilbertson: This looks like something that would be in a Zack Snyder film. Like, it's perfectly framed, like, the bodies around it would be moving in super slow motion.
- 3:18Dillon Gilbertson: It would be practically a still frame that's just moving ever so slightly. It looks… it's just very well composed.
- 3:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, but this organ blasting fire in the middle with, like, all of the bent-out, like, all the organ pipes are just going in different directions, like, some of them are curved around.
- 3:34Peter Eggleston Connor: That's pretty epic. Does, however, remind me of, the Bard, and mad Max Fury Road.
- 3:45Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah…
- 3:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Just a little bit, not a lot.
- 3:48Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah. The, the Doof Warrior.
- 3:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 3:51Dillon Gilbertson: Got Doof Warrior vibes up there, just playing… Playing this apocalyptic… instrument.
- 3:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Awful, that's okay.
- 4:00Matt: But the rock's not moving.
- 4:02Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it's not moving at 80 miles per hour.
- 4:04Matt: We've got a portable rack.
- 4:06Dillon Gilbertson: Come on, Peter.
- 4:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 4:08Matt: playing rock music.
- 4:10Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 4:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Probably.
- 4:13Dillon Gilbertson: Sorry, it was just the flames, guys, it was just the flames, it got to me.
- 4:20Dillon Gilbertson: Good cover.
- 4:24Peter Eggleston Connor: It was a good car.
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: And then, yeah, cool, cool cat girl.
- 4:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 4:32Tad Eggleston: Do we have a title on that one?
- 4:34Peter Eggleston Connor: on the catgirl.
- 4:37Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, she's.
- 4:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh… Okay, my joke doesn't apply anymore.
- 4:49Tad Eggleston: Wait a minute, there it is. Illustration by…
- 4:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Do you mean?
- 4:57Dillon Gilbertson: others…
- 5:02Tad Eggleston: You can't quite read it.
- 5:04Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, hold on a second.
- 5:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Duracema. D-U-U-R-S-E-M-A.
- 5:13Tad Eggleston: I don't know that name.
- 5:15Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know that name either.
- 5:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, it's a cool cat, girl.
- 5:20Tad Eggleston: And then we got an ad for the Alien graphic novel.
- 5:25Tad Eggleston: We had an ad for the Alien movie, too, but everybody knows the Alien poster already.
- 5:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 5:32Tad Eggleston: I kinda like how they put the, the… the… Simonson panels inside a film.
- 5:44Tad Eggleston: That's a… that's a good ad design.
- 5:46Matt: Yeah, it's what's… it is, it really is.
- 5:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 5:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 5:51Tad Eggleston: I don't entirely know what this thing is…
- 5:54Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 5:55Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't.
- 5:56Dillon Gilbertson: Not like they didn't know either.
- 5:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Radioactive explosion or something?
- 5:59Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 6:00Peter Eggleston Connor: If you read what's below.
- 6:02Tad Eggleston: I mean, it says there's some confusion about where this photograph was actually taken.
- 6:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 6:09Tad Eggleston: But it does look kind of cool, and… but I wouldn't actually call it a photograph. It looks more like a…
- 6:15Tad Eggleston: Painting to me.
- 6:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I don't think.
- 6:17Tad Eggleston: I suppose I could be wrong.
- 6:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Damn.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: But…
- 6:22Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, if that's a photograph, somebody, like… I don't know.
- 6:30Tad Eggleston: And we've got our cigarette papers.
- 6:33Tad Eggleston: That don't have the words tobacco anywhere.
- 6:37Matt: Correct.
- 6:41Tad Eggleston: Job gets rid of the blues.
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: And then we've got our… our ad for the, so beautiful, so dangerous.
- 6:56Tad Eggleston: Our first boobies of the episode, or issue?
- 6:59Peter Eggleston Connor: I felt like it was, like, I remember reading this ad, and then, like, it using so beautiful, so dangerous, and then I wasn't entirely sure.
- 7:11Tad Eggleston: You know, it says, please rush blank copies of Angus. He's so beautiful and so dangerous.
- 7:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I missed that. Okay, yeah. Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep. So beautiful, so dangerous.
- 7:23Tad Eggleston: And then some Sinbad.
- 7:29Peter Eggleston Connor: It's in bed with a dog.
- 7:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry with him kicking a dog.
- 7:35Tad Eggleston: I was actually… I was, even though the ending…
- 7:42Tad Eggleston: I mean, the ending is kind of weird as a… as a standalone, just because…
- 7:55Tad Eggleston: The least action of any chapter, right?
- 7:58Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: So it feels more like a coda.
- 8:02Tad Eggleston: But I found it a satisfying ending.
- 8:06Peter Eggleston Connor: How good are you?
- 8:08Matt: I can see that, I agree with that.
- 8:10Peter Eggleston Connor: So, it was kind of random that there's this other genie who's like, oh yeah, I'll put you all through all this.
- 8:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 8:16Tad Eggleston: You pissed me off, so I put you through all of this, because your wife is my…
- 8:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Nice.
- 8:24Tad Eggleston: Nice, yeah.
- 8:26Tad Eggleston: And you were… you were, you were a bad husband. But now I think you may have learned.
- 8:31Tad Eggleston: And if you did learn, you'll be okay, and if you didn't learn, I'll be back.
- 8:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 8:37Tad Eggleston: And then Scheherazade finishes up and turns to her sister and finds out that she's running away.
- 8:48Tad Eggleston: With, handsome topless man.
- 8:53Matt: Is there any other kind?
- 8:57Matt: That you would want to run away with? Probably not.
- 9:00Dillon Gilbertson: We are not happy.
- 9:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Or…
- 9:02Dillon Gilbertson: accomplishments.
- 9:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Tales of the Arabian Nights, or does that mean we're done?
- 9:06Tad Eggleston: I think it might mean we're done.
- 9:09Tad Eggleston: But who knows?
- 9:10Peter Eggleston Connor: One story of Arabian Nights.
- 9:14Peter Eggleston Connor: It's not tails, it's tail.
- 9:17Tad Eggleston: Well, but it says… it says… well…
- 9:21Tad Eggleston: I guess it does say New Tails.
- 9:24Tad Eggleston: So maybe we'll get more.
- 9:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, I'm a bit nitpicky, I don't really mind that much, but…
- 9:30Tad Eggleston: I do… I do really just love this last panel, though.
- 9:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Last panel.
- 9:38Tad Eggleston: You know, the crescent moon, and the ship out at sea, and the rowboat on shore, and…
- 9:48Tad Eggleston: Her running away with the sailor.
- 9:58Tad Eggleston: And then, speaking of Superman… We've got Christopher Reeve on the cover of Starbucks.
- 10:03Dillon Gilbertson: Didn't even notice that.
- 10:07Matt: The great track. Do you know what the opposite of Christopher Reeve is?
- 10:11Dillon Gilbertson: Christopher Walken.
- 10:13Matt: Yeah… That never gets old.
- 10:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Great Trap Part 3.
- 10:26Matt: It's a trap! Admiral Ackbar did not make an appearance.
- 10:30Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I didn't… I didn't see any Admiral Ackbar.
- 10:34Dillon Gilbertson: Missed opportunity.
- 10:36Matt: Absolutely.
- 10:38Tad Eggleston: I don't think we've met out Admiral Ackbar yet, so it would have been kind of weird.
- 10:43Tad Eggleston: Real time.
- 10:43Matt: It would actually make it hilarious if there was some squid-looking dude in this.
- 10:48Peter Eggleston Connor: There's, like, some… some, yeah, guy, fish-looking guy, he says, it's a drop! And then, like, years later.
- 10:55Matt: Yeah, he's like, honey, trust me.
- 10:58Dillon Gilbertson: They're gonna love this, it's great!
- 11:02Matt: Slow burn! Slow burn humor!
- 11:06Peter Eggleston Connor: And then somebody has to be like, did… did George Lucas ever get called out on this?
- 11:15Peter Eggleston Connor: By the way, listen.
- 11:16Tad Eggleston: I think one of my favorite things about this story is that, like, you've got the spaceships, but then you've got cars that look very classic.
- 11:24Matt: And I love when spaceships look like fighter jets. Yeah.
- 11:28Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 11:29Matt: It's a nice genre.
- 11:30Tad Eggleston: For sure.
- 11:31Matt: that.
- 11:31Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I feel like a lot of time, the, the reasoning is that, like, your spaceship doesn't have to be aerodynamic, because it's in space, but, like, you gotta get off the ground first, dude.
- 11:44Matt: Right.
- 11:44Dillon Gilbertson: That's what we're pulling.
- 11:45Tad Eggleston: Ulcer lifts are for?
- 11:47Dillon Gilbertson: Honey.
- 11:47Matt: I also really dig it when the spaceships, are, like, Navy vessels. I don't know why, I just think that's really cool.
- 11:54Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm… Yeah, like a Star Destroyer or something?
- 11:58Matt: Yeah.
- 12:04Peter Eggleston Connor: I like…
- 12:06Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know, the, this, this, villain guy on the previous page from what Ted's looking at.
- 12:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Where did they say it?
- 12:21Peter Eggleston Connor: I feel like this, oh, yeah, Boundryptus. Yes, it's him. He re- reaches the base.
- 12:30Peter Eggleston Connor: It's like, I don't remember what we last knew about Von Richtes, but apparently he's here again now, and then they're like, oh yeah, and then he falls into a cliff.
- 12:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Or falls off a cliff.
- 12:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, so… is he gone, or are they just gonna pull him back again?
- 12:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Anyhow… But…
- 13:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, it's gotten to the point where it's pretty goofy, and I find it would be a thing.
- 13:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I… I kinda… Didn't remember the first two parts of the story well enough to.
- 13:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, and what.
- 13:15Tad Eggleston: Honestly.
- 13:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Funny.
- 13:16Tad Eggleston: going on.
- 13:17Peter Eggleston Connor: is… first two parts, there's actually, like, more parts even before that. They just didn't call them…
- 13:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, this is a.
- 13:29Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 13:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, they called this the Great Trap Part 3, but they had things before they started calling it the Great Trap.
- 13:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Part of the story.
- 13:39Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 13:41Tad Eggleston: You know, the great trap is the secret.
- 13:45Peter Eggleston Connor: gas, but I'll… I get… it'd be like the sequel of the sequel of the sequel of the sequel.
- 13:50Dillon Gilbertson: This is actually the…
- 13:51Matt: There's a couple of prequels in there, too.
- 13:55Dillon Gilbertson: You know, some legacy sequels, the whole…
- 13:58Tad Eggleston: I also love this first panel of airtight Garage.
- 14:04Matt: Yeah.
- 14:04Matt: For sure.
- 14:09Dillon Gilbertson: Why do you draw so many vertical lines, Mobius?
- 14:12Dillon Gilbertson: It's a crazy weighted texture.
- 14:14Matt: Oh,
- 14:16Tad Eggleston: Because it looks cool.
- 14:17Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, it does, you don't know.
- 14:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Get all those vertical lines.
- 14:21Matt: Okay, so I wonder, like, has anyone tried to decode the Mars code in the background there through the door?
- 14:28Dillon Gilbertson: What?
- 14:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Fourth code, with background, what?
- 14:31Matt: Yeah, can you zoom in, Ted?
- 14:34Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know that that's Morse code, it's more… it's just… more lettering?
- 14:38Matt: No, I know, but it looks like it could be.
- 14:40Dillon Gilbertson: It definitely looks… it really does look like Morse code, dear.
- 14:43Matt: Could be hilarious.
- 14:44Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 14:45Dillon Gilbertson: It will say something like, I can't believe you wasted your entire afternoon trying to decode this wall.
- 14:50Matt: out what this said, yeah. And by the way, drink more Ovaltine.
- 14:55Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah, drink more of a tea crummy commercial.
- 15:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 15:10Tad Eggleston: And then it was weird that we actually got a 6-panel grid from Mobius.
- 15:15Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I was taken aback by this. It was very strange.
- 15:19Tad Eggleston: Canada.
- 15:20Matt: I did my best to keep it as dried, you know, just take it as dried.
- 15:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, nice.
- 15:24Tad Eggleston: Almost strong.
- 15:26Peter Eggleston Connor: If you're being strange all the time, and you finally am like, we're gonna do something normal, then isn't that also fairly strange? Strange.
- 15:34Tad Eggleston: That is true. I'll give you that.
- 15:39Tad Eggleston: But… it was. It was… it was like, wait a minute, did Mobius go Kirby here?
- 15:46Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 15:48Tad Eggleston: For that matter, you even have some Kirby Crackle down here.
- 15:52Matt: Yep, yeah, I didn't even know… you know what? Tad, thank you for putting that together for me.
- 15:59Matt: Ugh.
- 16:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 16:02Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's not quite Kirby, you don't have anybody in a wrestling crouch.
- 16:07Matt: True.
- 16:09Tad Eggleston: And most of the proportions are accurate and consistent.
- 16:13Matt: Correct.
- 16:15Matt: Maybe that's why…
- 16:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, and it's a lightning that you're speaking of, and it's like, what is going on?
- 16:21Tad Eggleston: So it's almost like… A mixture of modern Kirby with pre-Marvel Kirby.
- 16:31Tad Eggleston: You know, back when he didn't draw 6 pages a day, and, like, Had greater detail.
- 16:38Dillon Gilbertson: Post-crackle, but pre-wrestling pose.
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: But it does, it feels very Kirby-inspired.
- 16:47Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:48Tad Eggleston: Or at least Kirby homage.
- 16:52Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 16:52Dillon Gilbertson: But there's… could have been some influence in there.
- 16:55Tad Eggleston: You know, hell, this guy looks like he could be a new god.
- 16:59Dillon Gilbertson: Yup.
- 17:00Matt: He really does.
- 17:02Dillon Gilbertson: Michael Frank.
- 17:05Matt: Or… or one of the bad guys from the Eternals, I forgot what they were called.
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: Ow.
- 17:11Tad Eggleston: Man… ugh.
- 17:15Tad Eggleston: I need to… to… to do my… do my page grab of this and send it to the Kirby Club.
- 17:22Tad Eggleston: And I always forget which…
- 17:25Dillon Gilbertson: What's the name of this new god? Wrong answers only.
- 17:31Matt: Triceratips.
- 17:33Dillon Gilbertson: How's it going?
- 17:35Peter Eggleston Connor: So, fraud would be the wrong answer, right? Wrong answer in that case.
- 17:41Peter Eggleston Connor: But if Grodd's the wrong answer, that makes it a right answer, doesn't it?
- 17:45Dillon Gilbertson: Boy, you can't do that to me right now, Peter.
- 17:50Dillon Gilbertson: I know the brain.
- 17:52Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, we are definitely going to have to…
- 17:57Dillon Gilbertson: Breed Air Tight Garage together at some point.
- 18:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, for sure.
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: Because it's… I mean, it's definitely a jam comic, but I feel like it might actually work better if you…
- 18:09Tad Eggleston: if you… Like, read all of the improvisation together.
- 18:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe.
- 18:18Matt: It totally… it probably feels totally different.
- 18:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 18:22Tad Eggleston: Hell yeah.
- 18:24Peter Eggleston Connor: I… I believe…
- 18:26Tad Eggleston: But I don't feel like it's right to do it until we finish reading it.
- 18:30Tad Eggleston: in heavy metal.
- 18:32Matt: Agreed.
- 18:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Kind of, like, go away from…
- 18:37Matt: Because then what? Then we read…
- 18:40Matt: Right. Sections again in the future, and it's like, oh, hey, remember when we talked about this?
- 18:49Tad Eggleston: So, here is our… we've got another 8 bells. Didn't we talk about we'd have more 8 bells?
- 18:56Matt: Spider-Man?
- 18:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, that's right.
- 18:58Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 18:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Another 8 we had at e-bills last time, too.
- 19:02Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 19:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Got that.
- 19:04Peter Eggleston Connor: It's like, why is this called 8 Bells? And I was like, oh, that's right.
- 19:11Dillon Gilbertson: The stingery…
- 19:13Peter Eggleston Connor: stingery.
- 19:14Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know why, but I kinda… I like the name Stingery.
- 19:18Peter Eggleston Connor: So, Stingray?
- 19:20Dillon Gilbertson: It's like an Australian stingray.
- 19:22Peter Eggleston Connor: I pronounced it Stingar.
- 19:25Dillon Gilbertson: Stinger, stinger.
- 19:27Matt: Yeah.
- 19:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I thought it was Stingery.
- 19:30Peter Eggleston Connor: shipping.
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: No, I, I.
- 19:33Dillon Gilbertson: Like dungarees, but stinging.
- 19:35Matt: Yes.
- 19:38Matt: The bees dungarees.
- 19:39Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah. The bees, they go on their knees.
- 19:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Dangarrell.
- 19:47Dillon Gilbertson: The we… the bees wear stingorees on their bee's knees.
- 19:53Dillon Gilbertson: Anyway, this comic.
- 19:56Peter Eggleston Connor: This is, like, the same… I mean…
- 20:01Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm trying to remember the last comic, but I don't remember it looking quite like this, so I'm wondering if…
- 20:06Tad Eggleston: No, it was a different character.
- 20:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah. I know it's a different character.
- 20:12Peter Eggleston Connor: I know it was a whole different genre, if I remember correctly.
- 20:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 20:16Peter Eggleston Connor: play.
- 20:17Tad Eggleston: I mean, different in that it…
- 20:20Peter Eggleston Connor: I was wondering if it was a different… was it a different artist, or was it the same.
- 20:24Tad Eggleston: No, it was still Gray Morrow.
- 20:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Okay.
- 20:29Dillon Gilbertson: Making an appearance in Sinbad down there.
- 20:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, this… this fouls a little bit…
- 20:36Peter Eggleston Connor: I think that particular image reminded me a little bit of Sinbad.
- 20:46Tad Eggleston: His very last issue had all of the.
- 20:48Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, God.
- 20:51Dillon Gilbertson: That's why this…
- 20:52Tad Eggleston: So bad.
- 20:55Dillon Gilbertson: We've just chill.
- 20:56Tad Eggleston: I managed to completely forget about Captain Future.
- 20:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Until now.
- 21:07Tad Eggleston: Must have been 2 issues back that had the last 8 bells.
- 21:13Peter Eggleston Connor: I looked two issues back, not the last 8 bells.
- 21:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Beautiful.
- 21:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, cause that one did… last issue definitely didn't.
- 21:22Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, bottom.
- 21:23Peter Eggleston Connor: No matter what losses, she was so bad.
- 21:29Tad Eggleston: I'm not gonna bother to find it right now.
- 21:33Tad Eggleston: It's not in the same folder.
- 21:37Tad Eggleston: So, so too, too much, too much work.
- 21:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Too much work.
- 21:42Tad Eggleston: But I do, I do… I mean, this is kind of an odd story for heavy metal?
- 21:48Tad Eggleston: I like this story a lot, but it, like…
- 21:52Peter Eggleston Connor: It's a superhero, sodoricana.
- 21:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's like, it's like between superhero and noir.
- 21:58Tad Eggleston: Right? So… It feels like it would fit.
- 22:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it feels like it'd fit more in a pulp magazine than a sci-fi magazine.
- 22:08Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I agree.
- 22:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no, I can see it now, looking back at it.
- 22:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Far…
- 22:15Tad Eggleston: I… I enjoyed it.
- 22:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Can you go?
- 22:19Tad Eggleston: I love the twist where, where, where the, the…
- 22:25Tad Eggleston: The wife thinks she's still protecting her husband, but then shows up and he's got his mistress, and is like, oh, well, fuck that.
- 22:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, heck yeah.
- 22:36Peter Eggleston Connor: And in the end where they're like, and then she was gunned down in an alley. Or was she?
- 22:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 22:49Dillon Gilbertson: Old stingery.
- 22:54Tad Eggleston: This is a cool picture. Actually, this is the silent one, yeah. The silent story was cool.
- 22:59Dillon Gilbertson: I really wanted… I liked this one, I think, but it lost me about halfway through, and I… and I feel like I wanna like it more than I did.
- 23:09Tad Eggleston: Bro.
- 23:11Tad Eggleston: I can feel that. But I also feel like it predicts the iPad.
- 23:16Dillon Gilbertson: Sure, yeah.
- 23:20Tad Eggleston: Doesn't that feel like an iPad in a docking station?
- 23:23Matt: Yeah.
- 23:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 23:24Dillon Gilbertson: It's called an iHome.
- 23:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Okay, this is… this is where I want to ask Dylan something, because, it's important. So… so… go to the next page.
- 23:38Peter Eggleston Connor: One more.
- 23:40Peter Eggleston Connor: One more.
- 23:42Dillon Gilbertson: This guy that looks vaguely like Hitler?
- 23:44Peter Eggleston Connor: That was all I was gonna say.
- 23:47Peter Eggleston Connor: Skeleton Key.
- 23:48Matt: I love the skeleton piece!
- 23:50Dillon Gilbertson: Yes, the skeleton.
- 23:51Matt: Yes!
- 23:51Dillon Gilbertson: standout moment, I just…
- 23:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, by the way, I can already tell you what my favorite picture is, or my favorite panel.
- 23:56Matt: panel, yeah, that was one of mine.
- 23:59Dillon Gilbertson: Thank you.
- 24:00Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:01Dillon Gilbertson: Gotta go backward, I think.
- 24:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Felton, yeah, I go back on one, page.
- 24:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I like it, because, like, most of the time they do these skeleton keys, and it's, like, a bone, and it's T-shaped.
- 24:15Dillon Gilbertson: This is a glass skeleton.
- 24:19Dillon Gilbertson: I imagine… so listen, I don't know… I don't know how familiar you guys are with, like, the construction of actual locks, but, like, the internal mechanism of this lock must be so goddamn complicated.
- 24:29Matt: complicated.
- 24:30Dillon Gilbertson: a full 206-bone skeleton to… to open it.
- 24:35Matt: market, yeah.
- 24:36Matt: You don't know what that skeleton's doing when it gets in there?
- 24:39Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:40Matt: Yeah.
- 24:41Dillon Gilbertson: Crazy.
- 24:42Tad Eggleston: Okay, I am now looking at this… Differently…
- 24:50Tad Eggleston: Because you have the gun pop out, and then you've got the gun…
- 24:55Tad Eggleston: That whole frame go further out.
- 24:58Tad Eggleston: And then the gun fires.
- 25:01Dillon Gilbertson: True.
- 25:02Tad Eggleston: But this is going backwards.
- 25:07Dillon Gilbertson: Sure.
- 25:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, they got fired in the previous one?
- 25:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah… So I almost wonder if, like, shh… Watching the story in reverse?
- 25:22Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, but at some point, she's in one of the panels.
- 25:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, right here.
- 25:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, right there. She's in the round of the panels.
- 25:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I feel like there's something going on here, and it…
- 25:40Tad Eggleston: We've got some definite levels here that I hadn't… I love this… this…
- 25:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Overhead shot of the room.
- 25:48Peter Eggleston Connor: I feel like part of it for me is I had all of these pictures split in half.
- 25:55Peter Eggleston Connor: The room with the guy on the floor, suggesting that he got shot.
- 25:59Matt: It's just so clue. Like, Colonel Mustard did that with, I think.
- 26:02Peter Eggleston Connor: That was, like, a clue.
- 26:03Tad Eggleston: Well, he has been shot here.
- 26:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, like…
- 26:08Dillon Gilbertson: Looks so gruesome.
- 26:11Peter Eggleston Connor: And then there's that picture in the middle, that guy. Was that the guy who was shot?
- 26:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Is that the guy with the cigarette in his mouth?
- 26:21Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know, man.
- 26:22Peter Eggleston Connor: They've got different noses.
- 26:27Tad Eggleston: And is it real, or is it a TV show?
- 26:34Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know, but at the end, they seemed to nuke some… some place.
- 26:42Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 26:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 26:48Tad Eggleston: It's one of the cooler stories. I mean, it really…
- 26:52Peter Eggleston Connor: better.
- 26:52Tad Eggleston: like this.
- 26:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Go with pages at the same time.
- 26:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Because when I was reading this earlier, I was like, oh, okay.
- 27:10Tad Eggleston: The wing on screen, the wing from above… The wing from below… The bomb dropping…
- 27:24Tad Eggleston: the mushroom cloud… Back to the TV.
- 27:28Tad Eggleston: But not the TV from the beginning, it's the TV from here.
- 27:33Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, and it's being turned off.
- 27:44Tad Eggleston: It's his TV.
- 27:49Tad Eggleston: It's the Murdered Guy's TV.
- 28:04Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is cool.
- 28:06Matt: Yeah, it had some great visuals. I really…
- 28:08Tad Eggleston: I could spend a lot of time with this story.
- 28:10Matt: Yes, very well thought out, very well produced, very well drawn.
- 28:17Tad Eggleston: And I'm nowhere near ready to make conclusions about it. I, like…
- 28:25Matt: I don't think we're supposed to.
- 28:29Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 28:30Tad Eggleston: I think it's one that you can, and then you'll change them.
- 28:34Matt: Exactly.
- 28:35Tad Eggleston: They'll make new ones, and you'll go back to old ones, and then they'll find stuff in between.
- 28:45Tad Eggleston: I imagine he had an intention. There are actually some panels that… are almost repeated?
- 28:54Tad Eggleston: Like, these 3 panels… are almost identical.
- 29:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Are they both identical, or are they identical?
- 29:07Tad Eggleston: I think they're almost identical.
- 29:13Dillon Gilbertson: They spot the difference on this?
- 29:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, 5 differences!
- 29:18Matt: Circle them, yeah, that's fine.
- 29:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's like the… it's like the little subtle things that make it feel hand-drawn.
- 29:29Tad Eggleston: more than, like, differences, differences. Does that make sense? Yeah. I don't think they're… I don't think they're cut and copied, I think they were drawn again.
- 29:40Matt: Yes.
- 29:40Tad Eggleston: Is what I meant by not quite…
- 29:44Peter Eggleston Connor: The problem is, like, the more I look at them.
- 29:47Peter Eggleston Connor: The less, like… normally, like, when you, like, look at hand-drawn things, like, even then you see, like, the little…
- 29:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Contrasting.
- 29:58Matt: Yeah, but the dots in the background are in the same positions.
- 30:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Right, that's.
- 30:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, as I look at it, initially, I'm like, are the bende dots differently? And I'm like, maybe they're not.
- 30:09Matt: Yeah.
- 30:10Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm sure it's the same picture 3 times over.
- 30:12Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 30:13Matt: But the wavy lines at the bottom.
- 30:17Matt: No, they're very, very close. Yeah, no, I think it's the same picture.
- 30:21Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 30:22Peter Eggleston Connor: because of all the lines and that sort of stuff, that it's like, oh, maybe they're a little bit different, but, like, I was, like, when I was looking at these earlier, I had that same feeling of, they look kind of the same and kind of different, and I looked at them close, I was like, I don't know, they look… I can't find any differences.
- 30:38Tad Eggleston: See, this is the craziest optical illusion, though, for me, is that as I'm looking at it, and they look the same, but almost different, initially, for, like, half a second, the picture on the screen looks like it's a fourth, even though it's not at all.
- 30:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, even if you look at it, like, that's the thing, like, I want to.
- 31:04Tad Eggleston: It has just enough of the same wavy shape that you think it's a fourth, and it's like, wait a minute, why did I even think.
- 31:11Dillon Gilbertson: At the tower.
- 31:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, what I was wondering is, like, is it even part of, like, the shape? But I can't even find where it would be part.
- 31:19Tad Eggleston: No!
- 31:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Ape, so I don't think it is.
- 31:21Tad Eggleston: No!
- 31:23Peter Eggleston Connor: I think… I think it's literally a deceptive throw, right?
- 31:27Tad Eggleston: Right!
- 31:34Tad Eggleston: Is Citizens Beware, actually, the title of this? Let's go back to the table of contents really quick.
- 31:42Matt: I feel like it could be?
- 31:47Dillon Gilbertson: I bet it is.
- 31:48Peter Eggleston Connor: I know.
- 31:48Tad Eggleston: It is, Citizens Beware by Mark Fisher.
- 31:54Matt: And that's a great way to work the title into the story.
- 31:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:57Matt: Without having, like, extra words or any words.
- 32:00Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 32:01Matt: Yeah, that's, that's some brilliant, brilliant, illustration there.
- 32:06Tad Eggleston: Do you know Mark Fisher. Matt, do you know Mark Fisher?
- 32:10Matt: -
- 32:14Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 32:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Learn about something new every day.
- 32:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Next up is… The boss.
- 32:35Tad Eggleston: I love that.
- 32:36Matt: Me too.
- 32:38Dillon Gilbertson: Like the bus, I always like the bus.
- 32:40Tad Eggleston: Oh, he's even a Chicago-based…
- 32:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, you mean.
- 32:45Matt: Mark Fisher, yeah, I'm looking him up, too.
- 32:48Dillon Gilbertson: The Chicago bus.
- 32:51Tad Eggleston: Music and music label owner.
- 32:54Matt: Yeah.
- 32:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Yo.
- 32:56Tad Eggleston: Co-founded SkinGraph?
- 33:03Peter Eggleston Connor: If he's Chicago-based, does that mean you have to reach out to him?
- 33:06Tad Eggleston: It might…
- 33:11Matt: He died in 2020… in 2017.
- 33:14Tad Eggleston: Oh, well… Sweet.
- 33:16Matt: I think this might be a different…
- 33:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I was about to say, at Lambiac, they don't have a date of death.
- 33:23Matt: Yeah, hold on. I'm on Wikipedia, so it could be the wrong Mark Fisher. It is.
- 33:27Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, wait a minute.
- 33:29Tad Eggleston: Oh, he should not be confused with British punk music critic and writer Mark Fisher, 1968, 2017. Yep, that's where I'm at. Yeah.
- 33:39Matt: Sorry, false alarm.
- 33:43Matt: Spoiler alert! Wait, no.
- 33:47Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I'm gonna… I'm digging his work, I'm gonna have to… Learn… learn more about him.
- 34:17Tad Eggleston: SkinGraph Records is still there.
- 34:19Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 34:23Tad Eggleston: So maybe I can reach him through there.
- 34:26Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 34:30Tad Eggleston: Done with that rabbit hole for now.
- 34:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, boy.
- 34:34Matt: We're gonna put a pin in that.
- 34:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Little pain.
- 34:38Tad Eggleston: Well, look at that! General inquiries go to…
- 34:41Tad Eggleston: get skin graft records. I wonder if that is Mark?
- 34:46Tad Eggleston: Fisher.
- 34:48Dillon Gilbertson: down the rabbit hole, Tad.
- 34:50Tad Eggleston: sorry, sorry.
- 34:53Tad Eggleston: Dig my way out of the rabbit hole.
- 34:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Pull out! Pull out!
- 34:58Matt: Float!
- 35:01Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, no, this was… this was one of my favorite buses.
- 35:04Dillon Gilbertson: It's a good bus.
- 35:05Matt: Oh, yeah.
- 35:08Peter Eggleston Connor: It looks like you're looking at a giant insect, and then slowly it becomes clear that it's a normal-sized insect.
- 35:14Peter Eggleston Connor: You're looking at the bus coming at you, and then suddenly you're looking at the bus coming away, and there's another insect.
- 35:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Only… it is a giant insect this time.
- 35:24Tad Eggleston: Or it's just the whole thing is playing with perspective.
- 35:28Matt: Right, that's how I read it. Yes and no.
- 35:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah. I mean, it reminds me a lot of,
- 35:35Tad Eggleston: I'm trying to remember the name of Mr. Invincible's Sidekick.
- 35:40Peter Eggleston Connor: So, if this is all as playing with perspec- perspective, and I'm okay if it is, does that mean that the boss just suddenly, like.
- 35:50Peter Eggleston Connor: fell… Into a massive pothole.
- 35:55Matt: Okay, it could.
- 35:58Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, no, I mean… I didn't mean.
- 36:00Matt: That's awesome!
- 36:01Tad Eggleston: playing with, with, with, there's this fantastic French comic.
- 36:09Tad Eggleston: called Mr. Invincible, where Mr. Invincible
- 36:15Tad Eggleston: His powers and ability are Fourth Wall Awareness.
- 36:19Tad Eggleston: Recognition and precognition, spatial manipulation, teleportation, trying…
- 36:25Tad Eggleston: Time travel, but really, it's that, like, he can… Reach across panels.
- 36:32Matt: Yeah.
- 36:35Tad Eggleston: But he has… yeah, using the magic of comics, Mr. Invincible… is…
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: Able to treat spacetime of his world as a comic book strip like the reader while breaking the fourth wall of the comic book panels.
- 36:54Tad Eggleston: This allows him to do various metafiction and paradoxical stuff.
- 36:58Tad Eggleston: One of his villains can break through the page, so, like, he can…
- 37:04Tad Eggleston: He can, like, open a door and go on to the other side of the page.
- 37:11Matt: Like, you have to be really high to think up shit like that, and you have to be really creative
- 37:17Matt: Keep going.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: But what I love, and I'm trying.
- 37:20Peter Eggleston Connor: It's really hard to think of shit like that? Damn.
- 37:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Damn.
- 37:24Tad Eggleston: the name of his, sidekick. His sidekick… Is able to… 2d. 2D.
- 37:41Matt: I'm lucky.
- 37:42Tad Eggleston: It's the name of his sidekick. So, like, if… if…
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: in this situation, like, 2D would be able to pick up the bus in the distance and bring it to him while keeping it the same size that it was in the distance, or vice versa, take this hammer here and take it to the… you know, take it off to the distance so that it's now a hammer that he can smash a house with.
- 38:04Dillon Gilbertson: Right, right.
- 38:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Yes.
- 38:10Tad Eggleston: So yes, that's, that's, that's what this, this.
- 38:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Mine, yup.
- 38:22Tad Eggleston: This particular air bus stop reminds me of is… is… Mr. Invincible, and 2D.
- 38:38Matt: Yeah, I like it.
- 38:43Tad Eggleston: Our normal amount of…
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: loving it and hating it in the letters page. So, though, I, like…
- 38:58Tad Eggleston: I still don't get, particularly with issue 28, how you could still be picking it up to write letters if you think it sucks.
- 39:05Dillon Gilbertson: Right.
- 39:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, yeah.
- 39:09Peter Eggleston Connor: what I wanted to… What I wanted to… what I was bewildered by was…
- 39:15Peter Eggleston Connor: One of… one of the people shares our, opinion on 1996.
- 39:21Peter Eggleston Connor: And he's, junk like 1996, he's wearing pretty thin, and the other person is like, Oh…
- 39:33Peter Eggleston Connor: I'd like an issue, compiled of the edition of all 1996.
- 39:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, boy.
- 39:39Tad Eggleston: And I have a feeling that it's the difference between somebody who was trying to read it and somebody who was really just looking at the art.
- 39:47Matt: Well, if you notice, this guy drew the picture above his letter.
- 39:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Boom.
- 39:56Tad Eggleston: Is that a Montelier?
- 39:58Tad Eggleston: Or is that…
- 40:00Matt: No, it's Enchaput.
- 40:02Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 40:03Matt: He drew this with his letter and sent it in.
- 40:07Tad Eggleston: Gotcha.
- 40:08Matt: And I think that's awesome!
- 40:10Peter Eggleston Connor: That's fair.
- 40:11Tad Eggleston: But Rich Kaplan is the one that wants a collection of 1996.
- 40:16Matt: Yes. Andrew Putt wants more Mobius.
- 40:20Peter Eggleston Connor: He, he's got one.
- 40:22Tad Eggleston: But I…
- 40:25Tad Eggleston: I will point out, and at some point, since it's not available digitally, you guys are gonna have to pick up the…
- 40:31Tad Eggleston: the actual… physical copy from New York Review Books.
- 40:36Tad Eggleston: I have… Chantaliers.
- 40:45Tad Eggleston: Three of them, including the one that we're gonna have later in this issue.
- 40:52Tad Eggleston: And a completely different… translation of 1996.
- 40:58Matt: Oh, yeah, you told us about that.
- 40:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Yay.
- 40:59Tad Eggleston: And it makes a massive difference.
- 41:02Peter Eggleston Connor: No, I completely believe that. I mean, like, I don't…
- 41:06Peter Eggleston Connor: I think, yeah, my… my comment was, based off of the 1996 that we saw here, not the 1996, like, you know.
- 41:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I would agree with Chaput more than Kaplan, but also, that makes me think that it's more likely that Kaplan
- 41:23Tad Eggleston: Was strictly appreciating the art.
- 41:27Matt: Could be.
- 41:30Tad Eggleston: And or has the brain that was able to read the gibberish?
- 41:35Tad Eggleston: Well…
- 41:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Or have the brain to be like, oh, that's gibberish, and skip the gibberish.
- 41:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:43Matt: And treat it like a silent comic.
- 41:47Tad Eggleston: And so, alright, This one, to me, is very much for… Matt and Dylan.
- 41:57Dillon Gilbertson: I loved the art in this so much. Why is it very much for both of us?
- 42:02Peter Eggleston Connor: I look for Matt and Dullo.
- 42:04Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, I want your stuff too, but Neil Adams in Heavy Metal.
- 42:09Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm assuming.
- 42:09Tad Eggleston: Assuming they know Neil Adams more than you do.
- 42:17Tad Eggleston: What?
- 42:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Not at all.
- 42:21Tad Eggleston: I know Matt knows Neil Adams.
- 42:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Matt just grinned and…
- 42:28Tad Eggleston: Though I'm also kind of curious, because every time a page is signed, it's signed by the other guy.
- 42:35Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 42:36Tad Eggleston: Is it possible that Neil Adams wrote this?
- 42:41Tad Eggleston: That would be really weird.
- 42:42Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, maybe.
- 42:43Matt: sure it's the right Neil Adams?
- 42:45Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 42:45Tad Eggleston: Spelled right.
- 42:47Matt: Yeah, huh?
- 42:50Dillon Gilbertson: The… the… the panels… so that those… this false story is, like, this dude's… this colonizer…
- 42:56Dillon Gilbertson: Is out… is out in space, and he's lonely, so he orders a woman to come and, like.
- 43:03Dillon Gilbertson: pleasure him, basically.
- 43:05Tad Eggleston: Send one that's smarter than him.
- 43:07Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know if we're supposed to like him, but he's very unlikable just for those two reasons.
- 43:11Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 43:14Dillon Gilbertson: So the robot orders, and the robot's like, you know, this… This woman's like… Better.
- 43:20Tad Eggleston: Place to place.
- 43:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:24Tad Eggleston: Not only did I get you a companion, I got one that will make you more efficient. She's better than you.
- 43:33Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, so I mean, I'm just sort of, like, oh my god, see, this panel at the bottom, this last panel at the bottom of the page, is my favorite panel. Look at the design of this robot's head, and the colors on it.
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: Oh, it's fantastic.
- 43:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Boom.
- 43:46Dillon Gilbertson: Most definitely.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: And there's another one that doesn't have… it's got the other…
- 43:52Tad Eggleston: Okay, we're gonna have to do another Google.
- 43:55Dillon Gilbertson: Because, like, the story is… is, like, the woman's on the way, and the robot's like, oh yeah, she's gonna make you better in every way, and you're gonna finish ahead of schedule, and it's gonna be great.
- 44:06Dillon Gilbertson: But then, like, something malfunctions and she dies.
- 44:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, the train.
- 44:11Dillon Gilbertson: Thank you.
- 44:11Peter Eggleston Connor: malfunctions…
- 44:13Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I feel like it's unclear as to whose fault it is.
- 44:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no, that's what I actually found most interesting about the story, was… you're not really sure if it's, like, the robot's fault, or…
- 44:24Dillon Gilbertson: I'm choosing to believe… I'm choosing to believe that it's the man's fault.
- 44:29Tad Eggleston: I lean towards that because of the title.
- 44:33Dillon Gilbertson: Because the rears its ugly green head.
- 44:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Here's a ugly green head.
- 44:37Dillon Gilbertson: What about it?
- 44:40Tad Eggleston: I mean, that seems to imply jealousy.
- 44:44Dillon Gilbertson: Oh yeah, that's fair. Yeah, because then the robot… I think the robot at one point's even, like, she's a higher class than you.
- 44:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 44:51Dillon Gilbertson: And so the guy's like, fuck this, and just, like, has her killed, and the robot's like, do you want me to order you another one? And he's like, no, no, no, we're good.
- 44:59Dillon Gilbertson: We're all good. I'll do all the work myself, and get all the credit.
- 45:04Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I mean, like, that's definitely probably… like, what I'd like is that's definitely an easy way to interpret it, and I'm not saying it's the wrong way to interpret it.
- 45:13Peter Eggleston Connor: I just, like…
- 45:14Matt: It's just the wrong way to interpret it.
- 45:17Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 45:18Peter Eggleston Connor: I just like the fact that, like, there is the ability to, like, keep it open, and then, like, be like, okay, is that really what happened, or
- 45:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, the robot trying to motivate him to go do something, and… you know…
- 45:31Dillon Gilbertson: Leah, what was the exception?
- 45:33Peter Eggleston Connor: Good dog.
- 45:33Dillon Gilbertson: Another way, what Peter might be saying is a more difficult way to interpret this, but also possibly equally as valid, is that it seems like the robot is this dude's only friend, right? Out here, like, he's just talking to the robot and stuff, and now the guy's getting a woman who's gonna come help him.
- 45:53Dillon Gilbertson: And the guy… at some point, the guy even, like, seems excited that, like, I'm gonna be able to finish ahead of schedule. He says that I'm gonna be motivated, so I'm gonna finish ahead of schedule, and so, like, he's not giving her any credit anyway.
- 46:05Dillon Gilbertson: But, like, the guy's now excited to have somebody else there with him, and so the robot could have killed her so that he could continue to be this man's only companion.
- 46:16Peter Eggleston Connor: That's the only way to put it, yeah.
- 46:17Dillon Gilbertson: Because of jealousy.
- 46:19Peter Eggleston Connor: That could also, yeah.
- 46:22Dillon Gilbertson: And so I think the both of those ways are… I think the first way that I said is more likely, but I think both of those are… are… are good interpretations.
- 46:30Peter Eggleston Connor: And what it can also be is that you just completely skip over the title whatsoever, and just say, oh, the transporter, or the tractor beam actually did fail, and she just fell to her death, and it was a terrible transport accident.
- 46:45Dillon Gilbertson: It just happens sometimes, ain't just the way.
- 46:48Dillon Gilbertson: If he's not…
- 46:49Matt: Or twice last night.
- 46:50Dillon Gilbertson: If you ignore the context…
- 46:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Punching you in the face. It's all random.
- 46:55Dillon Gilbertson: But, like, the… I… this is my… I'm gonna… I mean, spoilers, this is my favorite story, art-wise and story-wise.
- 47:01Matt: It was… it's good.
- 47:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Man, they're making a sequel!
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: What I'm… what I'm reading here is…
- 47:10Tad Eggleston: It was a comic strip collaboration between Michael Hinge and Neil Adams.
- 47:16Tad Eggleston: Much of Hinge's art had already been used as cover art elsewhere, which Hinge also used.
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: Style for another strip you did called, orbital?
- 47:43Peter Eggleston Connor: And as I'm… I mean, I think this is more hinged than atoms, I guess, is what I'm really… here, let me…
- 47:49Dillon Gilbertson: But who wrote it?
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: Let me share what I'm looking at here.
- 47:54Tad Eggleston: because here… Here are…
- 47:58Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, if it was Neil Adams, there'd be dinosaurs at the center of the Earth and stuff, so…
- 48:04Matt: You're not wrong.
- 48:05Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 48:10Dillon Gilbertson: He'd be ordering a dinosaur to come up and pledge him instead.
- 48:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe they are.
- 48:13Tad Eggleston: But see, here's… These are various… covers…
- 48:21Dillon Gilbertson: That looks like what I just.
- 48:22Tad Eggleston: And stuff that he did. Well, some of it is, like.
- 48:26Tad Eggleston: Very much stuff that you just read.
- 48:29Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, a choice of gods.
- 48:32Tad Eggleston: Has it…
- 48:32Matt: It looks like it could be… columnar?
- 48:34Tad Eggleston: What's…
- 48:35Dillon Gilbertson: That's the same, that's the same image, that was the girl's face.
- 48:38Tad Eggleston: No, that's the point, is…
- 48:39Dillon Gilbertson: This is also the same…
- 48:41Tad Eggleston: What it says is that
- 48:45Tad Eggleston: much of his… his… I mean, it was… it was a collaboration between the two of them, so it was probably some Adam's art as well, because it doesn't say Adams wrote in.
- 48:57Tad Eggleston: But that much of Hinge's artwork had already been used as cover art elsewhere.
- 49:03Tad Eggleston: So he… so… so Neil Adams just took a bunch of his cover art and wrote a story about it, and then Hinge, like, filled in… filled in the middles.
- 49:11Dillon Gilbertson: With more art, I guess?
- 49:13Tad Eggleston: I mean, possibly, and or Adams did some of the draw… I mean, it's not impossible that Adams would have done some of the drawing.
- 49:24Matt: The gas pump martini filler, though, was pretty cool.
- 49:27Tad Eggleston: I mean, it seems to imply that they actually collaborated, that it wasn't just, like…
- 49:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Berthon did all the work.
- 49:38Tad Eggleston: Right, it's not just, like, Adams took…
- 49:41Tad Eggleston: Took the covers and cobbled them together without… Input on the story.
- 49:48Dillon Gilbertson: Think I love this story?
- 49:50Tad Eggleston: I do too.
- 49:52Peter Eggleston Connor: That's a great.
- 49:52Tad Eggleston: But it's a really kind of…
- 49:55Tad Eggleston: fascinating… I mean, I wish I could find something even more…
- 49:59Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know.
- 49:59Tad Eggleston: on how they…
- 50:02Dillon Gilbertson: are…
- 50:03Tad Eggleston: How they work together.
- 50:05Dillon Gilbertson: Is Hinge still alive?
- 50:07Peter Eggleston Connor: We haven't even talked about the art yet.
- 50:10Dillon Gilbertson: I know.
- 50:10Tad Eggleston: No, Hinge… Hinge is not still alive.
- 50:13Dillon Gilbertson: Awful.
- 50:22Matt: Why is Dave Gibbons listed?
- 50:26Matt: That's what I'm looking for… looking at right now on the Pinterest page. Well, it's Pinterest, so it could be anything.
- 50:32Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 50:36Dillon Gilbertson: ghostwritten by.
- 50:37Tad Eggleston: Could be the Dave… Could… could… could be that, that…
- 50:48Tad Eggleston: that other pages nearby are Dave gave.
- 50:50Matt: Yes.
- 50:51Tad Eggleston: Who knows?
- 50:51Matt: Yeah, I was gonna say, that seems odd.
- 50:55Matt: Yeah, oddly specific.
- 51:01Dillon Gilbertson: How much is it worth on Key Collector Comics?
- 51:06Matt: 57. 8. 8.
- 51:08Dillon Gilbertson: 8 bucks.
- 51:11Peter Eggleston Connor: at the low.
- 51:13Tad Eggleston: It's a non-key issue.
- 51:16Dillon Gilbertson: I call it bullshit.
- 51:19Dillon Gilbertson: It's got Rear's ugly head in it, how could it not be key?
- 51:25Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, I, I…
- 51:26Dillon Gilbertson: Skeleton keys in it.
- 51:27Tad Eggleston: I don't think we should go ahead and fall even further down the rabbit hole, but I…
- 51:34Dillon Gilbertson: I feel like there's…
- 51:37Tad Eggleston: There's a story about how that How this got put together.
- 51:42Dillon Gilbertson: This… this story's gonna live in my brain for too long.
- 51:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, it's… it's great.
- 51:48Dillon Gilbertson: It's really good, and like, it seems like the story behind it is way more interesting than the internet is giving us information for.
- 51:53Tad Eggleston: Right, I mean… I mean, seriously, when have you heard of… a series of unrelated covers.
- 52:02Matt: Being pulled together.
- 52:04Tad Eggleston: Being pulled together, and added to, or whatever.
- 52:07Matt: Yeah.
- 52:09Tad Eggleston: And turned into a story.
- 52:13Tad Eggleston: You know, it's got surprisingly good lettering for this era of…
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: Heavy metal?
- 52:20Matt: Yep.
- 52:21Tad Eggleston: Where… how often do we complain about unreadability?
- 52:25Matt: typography, yup.
- 52:27Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 52:31Tad Eggleston: And, you know, some of the subtle, subtle sh… you know, subtle…
- 52:39Tad Eggleston: Differences in, in shapes of, of balloons.
- 52:42Tad Eggleston: like, just make a difference.
- 52:48Tad Eggleston: The color is just outstanding.
- 52:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Go ahead.
- 52:52Dillon Gilbertson: on the bottom right, like, I'll… I'll have a poster, a t-shirt of that.
- 52:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 52:59Dillon Gilbertson: Bookmark? I don't give a shit, give it to me.
- 53:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, this is… I didn't even, like, I think I… I think… well, it even says another drink, but I, like…
- 53:10Tad Eggleston: The martinis out of the… Out of the gas pump, essentially.
- 53:17Matt: I think it's brilliant.
- 53:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 53:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Absolutely genius.
- 53:25Tad Eggleston: And he's still pouring 3?
- 53:27Tad Eggleston: Even though the woman…
- 53:30Peter Eggleston Connor: They're all for the dude. I mean, robots, alcohol, unless.
- 53:34Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, yeah, okay.
- 53:35Dillon Gilbertson: This is actual gas, Peter. Come on.
- 53:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, the robot wants the full credit!
- 53:42Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, so now he's gonna poison the guy by giving him a poison drink.
- 53:48Peter Eggleston Connor: of gasoline.
- 53:50Matt: Listen, there's… you're right, there's multiple ways… there's multiple and equally more difficult ways to interpret this story.
- 53:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Why does this taste like gasoline? Well, I don't know, you're the one who made all the… Danish.
- 54:03Dillon Gilbertson: It's… it's a… it's a promotional flavor, it's gasoline flavored.
- 54:08Matt: Promotional… oh my god, that's funny.
- 54:10Tad Eggleston: Well, how about this? You know, because on one level, he ordered her to, like, actually populate this colony, and here he is talking about needing to go back to work, and the robot is offering him another drink.
- 54:25Tad Eggleston: So… maybe the robot doesn't want humans?
- 54:30Tad Eggleston: on…
- 54:30Matt: What… what clanker would…
- 54:33Tad Eggleston: I mean… But I'm sayin'…
- 54:39Dillon Gilbertson: Is it… is he secretly the good? Because they're also colonists.
- 54:43Tad Eggleston: That's what I'm saying.
- 54:44Dillon Gilbertson: Or, yeah.
- 54:55Peter Eggleston Connor: I still wish there was a way to describe the way that these are all put together for our listeners, but it's pretty hard.
- 55:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is definitely one where I'm gonna say, if you… well, first of all…
- 55:07Peter Eggleston Connor: do is, like, imagine psychedelic imagery? Yeah, okay, that's, that's, like.
- 55:12Tad Eggleston: But this is where I'm gonna say, if you can find the July 79 issue of Heavy Metal, do so. But, like, in our rabbit hole, we found how many different sites that had this whole story posted, so…
- 55:28Peter Eggleston Connor: just Google rears its ugly head.
- 55:31Tad Eggleston: Hinge and Adams.
- 55:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Weird, it's okay.
- 55:33Matt: Where it's not a key issue of heavy metal?
- 55:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Well, that just means it'll be cheaper if you find it. Sure.
- 55:40Matt: Yeah, exactly.
- 55:44Tad Eggleston: Alright, Matt, your guy, Vaughn Bode.
- 55:46Matt: Love Vamboni!
- 55:47Dillon Gilbertson: I love Zooks. Zooks is great.
- 55:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, this is fine.
- 55:51Tad Eggleston: This is fun.
- 55:54Dillon Gilbertson: Just the dumbest ass pilot.
- 55:57Tad Eggleston: Yup.
- 55:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, yeah.
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: Yipes! I was out of fuel!
- 56:06Matt: Yeah, it's just great!
- 56:08Tad Eggleston: Sergeant, you bumbling dope, you forgot to put your wheels down!
- 56:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Don't buzz the launch pad. Hey, that's a great idea!
- 56:17Peter Eggleston Connor: I think I buzzed the launch pad!
- 56:21Tad Eggleston: Sunflower, don't land, you forgot!
- 56:29Dillon Gilbertson: He's gonna be the first lizard in space, or whatever.
- 56:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Apparently.
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: This is a better… this is one of the better ads for a subscription, too.
- 56:40Peter Eggleston Connor: But that's…
- 56:41Tad Eggleston: Set a… I don't even know.
- 56:44Tad Eggleston: Is… is… is this… Does anybody remember this mouse, or is this coming up?
- 56:50Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't remember that mouse. I also don't remember that lizard.
- 56:54Matt: I'm gonna say it's coming up, because I.
- 56:56Tad Eggleston: Oh, man!
- 56:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, some of these I recognize, you know, we got some So Beautiful, So Dangerous, we've got whatever that story that looked like it was…
- 57:09Peter Eggleston Connor: I can say, like, everything else…
- 57:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Except, I don't know if I recognize the woman in the background, either.
- 57:17Matt: Which woman in the background?
- 57:19Peter Eggleston Connor: A naked woman in the background.
- 57:21Matt: Oh, oh, the one that's jumping through space, yeah, okay.
- 57:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Lam.
- 57:27Peter Eggleston Connor: The one…
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: And at this time, you could still order… All of the back issues.
- 57:34Matt: Dude, it was just a couple of years ago.
- 57:38Matt: where you could still do that on heavy metal's site. They had.
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: Really?
- 57:41Matt: Yes!
- 57:43Matt: Yes. I, 10 years ago, you could still get them, almost all of them, from heavy metal.
- 57:50Tad Eggleston: I did dig this picture.
- 57:53Matt: I did not bother to…
- 57:56Tad Eggleston: Did you read about the young gnome? Did anybody read about the Young Gnome? Nope. I thought about reading about the young gnome, because I dig… dug this picture.
- 58:05Dillon Gilbertson: You dig dug it?
- 58:07Tad Eggleston: I dug the picture.
- 58:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, not TikTok yet.
- 58:11Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 58:13Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm sad.
- 58:16Peter Eggleston Connor: dumb.
- 58:17Tad Eggleston: And then our Chantal Montier.
- 58:20Tad Eggleston: Which wasn't nearly as annoying with, like, translation that, like.
- 58:25Dillon Gilbertson: 19.
- 58:25Tad Eggleston: Didn't involve gibberish.
- 58:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no? It's actually kind of curious, and you're sort of interested in where it's going.
- 58:44Peter Eggleston Connor: There's something about a curfew in it.
- 58:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 58:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah, they're closing at 6 rather than 7 because of the curfew.
- 58:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 58:55Tad Eggleston: Each level down you go, the anti-atomic protection is better.
- 59:02Tad Eggleston: When they get down to, like, the food court.
- 59:07Peter Eggleston Connor: 100%.
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: And then it's to be continued.
- 59:12Peter Eggleston Connor: There's some weird weaning sound.
- 59:14Tad Eggleston: Pinball and ice cream?
- 59:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 59:20Tad Eggleston: Sprint and Safari Europe, but it's got the Atari symbol above it.
- 59:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 59:34Tad Eggleston: Telefield, it continues to be weird.
- 59:38Matt: Yeah,
- 59:38Peter Eggleston Connor: But…
- 59:45Tad Eggleston: Not bad, but weird.
- 59:47Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, they have something that looks like Dracula, but he's Von Helsink.
- 59:52Tad Eggleston: He's definitely a vampire.
- 59:56Peter Eggleston Connor: What?
- 59:57Tad Eggleston: Look at those, look at those teeth.
- 1:00:01Peter Eggleston Connor: You mean the canines that everybody has?
- 1:00:04Tad Eggleston: Whatever.
- 1:00:08Tad Eggleston: Look at that forehead, look at those teeth.
- 1:00:11Tad Eggleston: I'm saying he's a vampire, dammit. Look at those fingers! Look at that cape.
- 1:00:15Peter Eggleston Connor: is on Helsink, which suggests that he's the vampire hunter, not the vampire.
- 1:00:21Matt: I don't know, I think he's a vampire.
- 1:00:23Peter Eggleston Connor: I think you might be right. I mean, like, he's not a normal vampire, he's a psychic vampire, right?
- 1:00:29Dillon Gilbertson: He's a Martian vampire.
- 1:00:30Matt: Some vampires have psychic abilities.
- 1:00:33Peter Eggleston Connor: No, no, no, I mean, he's sucking their psychic power. That's how he gets.
- 1:00:37Tad Eggleston: The psychoplasma. I have to have another shot.
- 1:00:41Matt: Right.
- 1:00:44Dillon Gilbertson: Mycoplasma.
- 1:00:46Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, the imagery is pretty nice.
- 1:00:49Tad Eggleston: No.
- 1:00:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Though, I mean, like, the fact that he's running around with syringes is a little weird.
- 1:01:00Peter Eggleston Connor: That's the other thing, he's not, like, biting their necks, he uses some weird syringe, and I'm not sure whether he's injecting them, or…
- 1:01:08Matt: Extracting?
- 1:01:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 1:01:22Tad Eggleston: And then Attila the Frog.
- 1:01:25Matt: Loved it.
- 1:01:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah…
- 1:01:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I go back to… I loved it by the end, but before the end, I was like, what the fuck is this?
- 1:01:36Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah, it's a difficult reading.
- 1:01:39Matt: it.
- 1:01:40Dillon Gilbertson: Is difficult… is difficult read, quote-unquote?
- 1:01:44Peter Eggleston Connor: And also, I mean, like, it's difficult on a couple levels, it's difficult emotionally, and it's difficult, like.
- 1:01:52Peter Eggleston Connor: I think now I see it a little bit better, but when I was reaching it originally, I was like.
- 1:01:56Peter Eggleston Connor: what the hell's going on here? And, like, I guess it's a little…
- 1:02:00Dillon Gilbertson: Just imagine what Attila the Hun was doing, but he's also a frog now.
- 1:02:04Peter Eggleston Connor: No.
- 1:02:04Matt: Huh.
- 1:02:05Dillon Gilbertson: You kinda get the idea.
- 1:02:08Tad Eggleston: All of the other frogs for the next 70 generations have a little bit of.
- 1:02:14Dillon Gilbertson: Until I ended up. Yeah.
- 1:02:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:18Dillon Gilbertson: Which is really only about a couple years, because frogs don't live that long.
- 1:02:22Matt: They have short lifespan, yeah, for sure.
- 1:02:35Tad Eggleston: Shorter when they get skewered by… By hungry human aliens.
- 1:02:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 1:02:47Dillon Gilbertson: That deep down comic was odd.
- 1:02:49Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh… I feel like it'd be weird if you skewered a frog, and you're like, oh, I'm gonna, like, cook this now. Oh, I need to take this little metal part off of it.
- 1:03:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, there's some weird fur that's on it. I'm gonna… I'm gonna pull that off. Oh, it's not actually attached, it's sort of like…
- 1:03:07Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:03:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Keep surround it.
- 1:03:10Peter Eggleston Connor: At what point do you start questioning your food choices?
- 1:03:13Dillon Gilbertson: Well, I think that they're… they're supposed to be alien frogs, like, they're on a different planet.
- 1:03:18Dillon Gilbertson: eating weird creatures, because it's also the salamanders… Salamanders, yeah, Quidox 5.
- 1:03:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I get it.
- 1:03:25Tad Eggleston: The salamanders are tastier.
- 1:03:27Peter Eggleston Connor: But what I'm saying is, these products are wearing clothes.
- 1:03:31Dillon Gilbertson: Yes, sir.
- 1:03:32Dillon Gilbertson: They're hungry.
- 1:03:33Tad Eggleston: I mean, you're assuming that they have rules about eating sentient beasts.
- 1:03:38Matt: I think that…
- 1:03:38Tad Eggleston: It might just be that they're allowed to eat anything that's smaller, regardless of sentience.
- 1:03:43Dillon Gilbertson: I think hunger drives you to do strange things, and it's clear that they haven't eaten meat in a long time, and so they're.
- 1:03:50Matt: Yeah, ask the Donner Party.
- 1:03:52Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, they're not gonna ask questions about the sentience of these frogs.
- 1:03:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Fair enough.
- 1:04:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Also, why do the other frogs just look chopped up and not, oh, frog legs? Nevermind.
- 1:04:09Tad Eggleston: I do like that they have their spices, though.
- 1:04:12Matt: Yeah, of course.
- 1:04:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Bam.
- 1:04:19Tad Eggleston: Down deep. Boing!
- 1:04:22Tad Eggleston: Gotta love bouncing… bouncing off the ocean.
- 1:04:34Tad Eggleston: Swimming with dolphins.
- 1:04:41Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know if I was supposed to take anything away from this, or if it was just something that was fun for them to draw.
- 1:04:47Matt: That's kind of what it felt like.
- 1:04:48Peter Eggleston Connor: It's colic!
- 1:04:50Peter Eggleston Connor: It could be, like, if you put yourself in the position of this guy, it could… it seems like it'd be a fun experience, like…
- 1:04:59Peter Eggleston Connor: You know…
- 1:05:00Dillon Gilbertson: Mescaline?
- 1:05:01Tad Eggleston: Though it's also a dream. He's on a recliner on the beach.
- 1:05:06Peter Eggleston Connor: That is true.
- 1:05:07Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, I just put that together, you are correct.
- 1:05:14Tad Eggleston: So, maybe he's a little high.
- 1:05:17Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah… I mean, dreams are weird.
- 1:05:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Or, maybe.
- 1:05:19Tad Eggleston: Mmm.
- 1:05:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Or drunk.
- 1:05:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Or he has a fever.
- 1:05:26Tad Eggleston: or Al.
- 1:05:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Or what?
- 1:05:29Tad Eggleston: weird owl. He's a little weird owl.
- 1:05:31Dillon Gilbertson: Just weird.
- 1:05:32Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 1:05:34Dillon Gilbertson: Just a weird ol' wow.
- 1:05:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Just weird Al.
- 1:05:41Tad Eggleston: Back when he had a mustache.
- 1:05:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Right.
- 1:05:47Tad Eggleston: I also didn't read… Chapter 5 of Starcrown.
- 1:05:53Matt: Nope, me neither.
- 1:05:56Tad Eggleston: Though the print is, is a readable size again.
- 1:06:04Tad Eggleston: When I stopped reading, it was the one where the print was in, like, what, 6-point font?
- 1:06:10Dillon Gilbertson: This was another one, because I think OnlyConnect was one of my favorite ones, maybe a couple times.
- 1:06:17Dillon Gilbertson: I usually really like Alton Connect, and I think I should really like this one, but again, I got sort of lost somewhere near the end.
- 1:06:25Peter Eggleston Connor: R.
- 1:06:26Tad Eggleston: Where'd he come from? From the incubator? From the workshop? From elsewhere? From nowhere?
- 1:06:32Dillon Gilbertson: So he says he's from the incubator, and the next one, like, they're running a test on him, and he says that he's a biodominance alpha. There's another one of them, so it seems like they don't like biodominance alphas.
- 1:06:44Dillon Gilbertson: And so the guy's like.
- 1:06:45Tad Eggleston: And just quiz number 2 on…
- 1:06:47Dillon Gilbertson: So don't kill them yet, let's see what the answer to the next question is.
- 1:06:50Tad Eggleston: There's a machine.
- 1:06:51Dillon Gilbertson: So he… so he knows that he's a machine.
- 1:06:55Dillon Gilbertson: But he's also… well, he's part human, so Biodominance Alpha…
- 1:07:00Dillon Gilbertson: But he… he thinks of himself more as a machine than… than bio.
- 1:07:06Tad Eggleston: Well, and he's going to be recycled.
- 1:07:08Matt: Recycled, yeah.
- 1:07:09Dillon Gilbertson: We're going to… so he's… So he's not biodominant.
- 1:07:13Tad Eggleston: And that's what makes him rare.
- 1:07:17Dillon Gilbertson: Is that he knows he's a machine, but he knows he's gonna die, or that he's meant to die, or meant to be recycled?
- 1:07:25Peter Eggleston Connor: I are just being recycled.
- 1:07:30Dillon Gilbertson: And then he is recycled.
- 1:07:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I don't know what the heck is going on with that… that part there.
- 1:07:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Because they're also talking about whether he should go to, like.
- 1:07:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Be part of, like, the army, or be a…
- 1:07:46Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, but then they just trash him for some stupid reason.
- 1:07:50Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, like, again, I don't know how to interpret that. It's like, they put him in some vat, and he spills out of the vat into…
- 1:07:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, the chair he was in, or another chair that's like the one he was in.
- 1:08:03Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 1:08:05Dillon Gilbertson: But also, someone's name in this story is Astro Gator, and that's pretty cool.
- 1:08:10Tad Eggleston: Well, actually, here's a question.
- 1:08:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 1:08:16Tad Eggleston: here comes the next one. Is it the next one, or is it the same one?
- 1:08:20Dillon Gilbertson: It seems like it's the… it's a… it's the next one that's made from the mix that also involve… includes the other one. Yeah, because he's being recycled. It goes into a vat, and is mixed up with all the other ones, and then he's.
- 1:08:33Tad Eggleston: comes out…
- 1:08:34Dillon Gilbertson: Yep.
- 1:08:36Tad Eggleston: And here comes the next one.
- 1:08:38Dillon Gilbertson: the next iteration of him.
- 1:08:39Tad Eggleston: I think. So, is it just, like, this… this whole…
- 1:08:44Tad Eggleston: Is it just a circular thing?
- 1:08:47Dillon Gilbertson: They're just… they're just scrambling together all of the scraps from all the other ones and seeing what they get.
- 1:08:53Dillon Gilbertson: Anyway…
- 1:08:56Peter Eggleston Connor: That car's pretty sweet.
- 1:08:58Tad Eggleston: It's pretty sweet, and I'm trying to remember the name of this one. This one had a cool title, too.
- 1:09:06Tad Eggleston: Oh yeah, it's a boy named Sue.
- 1:09:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Sweet.
- 1:09:13Peter Eggleston Connor: by Kazwa.
- 1:09:17Tad Eggleston: A boy named Sue.
- 1:09:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Is that a boy? Hey.
- 1:09:24Tad Eggleston: Oh. But that's the name of the painting, is A Boy Named Sue.
- 1:09:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 1:09:29Tad Eggleston: I feel like, I feel like there was just a Kaza collection.
- 1:09:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 1:09:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Released.
- 1:09:40Tad Eggleston: Arcady.
- 1:09:45Tad Eggleston: And the Lost Titan.
- 1:09:50Tad Eggleston: It was just brought out from humanoids.
- 1:09:56Tad Eggleston: So the people who do metal are a lot.
- 1:10:01Tad Eggleston: It looks cool. I haven't read it yet.
- 1:10:02Dillon Gilbertson: Metal Hurlin?
- 1:10:04Dillon Gilbertson: For that book.
- 1:10:06Tad Eggleston: a lot.
- 1:10:10Tad Eggleston: new greedy.
- 1:10:12Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:10:18Tad Eggleston: The question is… Dylan, what's your favorite ongoing?
- 1:10:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Doing just one.
- 1:10:29Peter Eggleston Connor: on you.
- 1:10:30Tad Eggleston: Alright, Matt, what's your favorite ongoing?
- 1:10:36Matt: Goodness gracious. I'm gonna go with airtight Garage this time, because I thought it was pretty cool.
- 1:10:40Tad Eggleston: Okay!
- 1:10:42Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:10:43Tad Eggleston: It's a pretty, pretty solid 2 pages.
- 1:10:47Matt: Yup.
- 1:10:50Tad Eggleston: Peter?
- 1:10:51Peter Eggleston Connor: So here's my question. Is it only Connect considered an ongoing, or is it just a bunch of singles?
- 1:11:01Tad Eggleston: I think we don't have rules.
- 1:11:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Fair enough. I'll go with OnlineConnect.
- 1:11:08Dillon Gilbertson: Was his favorite ongoing?
- 1:11:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 1:11:10Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:11:15Dillon Gilbertson: What was the one… I mean, OnlyConnect, do I want to say only Connect?
- 1:11:21Dillon Gilbertson: There was another one, what,
- 1:11:34Dillon Gilbertson: I think I'm also gonna say only connect?
- 1:11:39Peter Eggleston Connor: And you… you can, you definitely are free to.
- 1:11:43Dillon Gilbertson: Oh yeah, what were the… so let's see, Telefield, Shelter…
- 1:11:47Peter Eggleston Connor: The Great Trap Part 3.
- 1:11:48Dillon Gilbertson: Zooks. Oh, I'm gonna say Zooks.
- 1:11:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Is Zoox an ongoing?
- 1:11:52Dillon Gilbertson: Zooks, it says.
- 1:11:53Tad Eggleston: It says to be continued.
- 1:11:55Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go. Zeke's a death.
- 1:11:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Chad, what's your favorite ongoing?
- 1:12:00Tad Eggleston: I think I'm gonna go with…
- 1:12:10Tad Eggleston: We're gonna call the bus an ongoing.
- 1:12:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Fair enough.
- 1:12:14Matt: If you can… Yeah, sure.
- 1:12:17Tad Eggleston: If you can call only Connect at ongoing, then the buses.
- 1:12:20Matt: It's absolutely ongoing.
- 1:12:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:12:22Peter Eggleston Connor: I buy it.
- 1:12:24Tad Eggleston: Alright, Dylan, story!
- 1:12:27Dillon Gilbertson: Where's its ugly head. Rear's its ugly green head.
- 1:12:34Peter Eggleston Connor: I will second Dylan's ruse, it's ugly green head.
- 1:12:39Matt: I will not third it, I picked Attila the Frog.
- 1:12:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Fair enough.
- 1:12:46Tad Eggleston: And I will also not third it, though it's tempting.
- 1:12:51Matt: Because I'm gonna pick, Citizens Beware.
- 1:12:57Matt: Yeah, that was a good one, too.
- 1:13:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I mean…
- 1:13:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Okay.
- 1:13:02Tad Eggleston: Like, I essentially went… like… Where's his ugly green head, and citizens beware, if neither of them get…
- 1:13:13Tad Eggleston: picked, or if one of them doesn't get picked, I have to pick it. If they both get picked, I probably would have done Stingery.
- 1:13:23Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 1:13:26Tad Eggleston: Because, I mean, there's just… that just…
- 1:13:31Tad Eggleston: Like, all of them were… were just good.
- 1:13:35Tad Eggleston: And, like, it was tough not to take the end of…
- 1:13:38Tad Eggleston: The last voyage of Sinbad, too, for ongoing I found it very satisfying.
- 1:13:49Tad Eggleston: And God, I have no idea for a panel.
- 1:13:53Matt: Oh, I'm going with Skeleton Key.
- 1:13:55Tad Eggleston: Skeleton key.
- 1:13:57Dillon Gilbertson: Good one.
- 1:13:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that was what I was gonna say.
- 1:14:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 1:14:01Peter Eggleston Connor: I'd say Mappy B.
- 1:14:02Tad Eggleston: So we got Tuesday.
- 1:14:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Did say it, like, way earlier in this episode, so…
- 1:14:07Matt: We both did, so yeah, it's cool.
- 1:14:09Dillon Gilbertson: It was a good one.
- 1:14:10Peter Eggleston Connor: fast.
- 1:14:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Best image in all the episodes.
- 1:14:14Dillon Gilbertson: I think mine… mine is one of the ones from Rear's Ugly Green Head. It's either the big robot head panel at the bottom of one of the pages, or it's the reflection…
- 1:14:25Dillon Gilbertson: Of the robot's legs in the water.
- 1:14:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Those are good.
- 1:14:38Tad Eggleston: Use a second…
- 1:14:49Tad Eggleston: So you're saying…
- 1:14:57Tad Eggleston: This head?
- 1:15:00Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 1:15:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 1:15:02Dillon Gilbertson: That one.
- 1:15:03Matt: That one, yeah.
- 1:15:04Dillon Gilbertson: So that one on the bottom, or the one on the right?
- 1:15:09Tad Eggleston: So, either the reflection or the… so, both on… on… on this page.
- 1:15:16Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I'm gonna say the one on the bottom.
- 1:15:20Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:15:45Tad Eggleston: You know what? I think…
- 1:15:50Tad Eggleston: Just because I did love it so much… as a… as a coda.
- 1:16:02Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna take my favorite panel from Sinbad, which is that last panel.
- 1:16:08Tad Eggleston: with, the sister headed off into an adventure.
- 1:16:15Peter Eggleston Connor: I love into something.
- 1:16:18Tad Eggleston: Daniels,
- 1:16:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, she's… I get the feeling that she's just… she's not headed for a romp in the bushes. They're going off to the…
- 1:16:30Tad Eggleston: to the…
- 1:16:31Matt: It's…
- 1:16:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the robot.
- 1:16:33Matt: Oh my gosh.
- 1:16:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:16:35Dillon Gilbertson: It's a happily ever after.
- 1:16:36Tad Eggleston: Story.
- 1:16:36Peter Eggleston Connor: She's gonna… she's gonna… she's gonna be taken to the boat where there'll be that implication.
- 1:16:44Peter Eggleston Connor: And it'll break her heart, and, you know… tosser.
- 1:16:47Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, but it'll be on some other island, and the adventure will continue.
- 1:16:54Tad Eggleston: I didn't say she's headed off into… Happily ever after.
- 1:16:59Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, baby.
- 1:17:01Tad Eggleston: That's possible, but that's not what I said, and that's not what it guarantees.
- 1:17:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe he'll just, like, get done romping her on the boat and toss her off right… right here in this part of the water.
- 1:17:14Tad Eggleston: Well, but, like, there are genies in this world, so, like… Oh, that that.
- 1:17:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Let's be careful here.
- 1:17:24Peter Eggleston Connor: There are genies in the world of Sinbad.
- 1:17:27Peter Eggleston Connor: These are the people telling the story of Sinbad.
- 1:17:31Tad Eggleston: Are you trying to say that the story of Sinbad is not true?
- 1:17:35Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm safe.
- 1:17:36Matt: Are you saying it's fiction?
- 1:17:38Tad Eggleston: Are you saying that Sharon?
- 1:17:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Got it.
- 1:17:41Tad Eggleston: Fiction with it.
- 1:17:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Fiction.
- 1:17:44Peter Eggleston Connor: And there's no guarantee.
- 1:17:46Tad Eggleston: I don't know.
- 1:17:46Peter Eggleston Connor: JVs.
- 1:17:48Tad Eggleston: I think it's truth within fiction.
- 1:17:51Peter Eggleston Connor: You believe whatever the heck you want to believe.
- 1:17:56Tad Eggleston: Alright, so here is my question for the group. We've got 4 options for next month. We've got heavy metal.
- 1:18:05Tad Eggleston: 2025 number 2, we've got Metal Ehrlant, 2025, number 2.
- 1:18:11Tad Eggleston: we've got August of 1979's… Heavy metal.
- 1:18:19Tad Eggleston: Or we could read Alien.
- 1:18:31Matt: I'm good with 79, August 79, or Alien?
- 1:18:36Tad Eggleston: So you don't want the new stuff.
- 1:18:38Matt: No.
- 1:18:40Tad Eggleston: No!
- 1:18:42Tad Eggleston: Did you not like them, Matt?
- 1:18:44Matt: It's not that, I just… I don't have them, and that's… I don't…
- 1:18:48Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:18:50Dillon Gilbertson: Fair.
- 1:18:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, I did share one of them.
- 1:18:53Dillon Gilbertson: How long is Aileen?
- 1:19:05Tad Eggleston: Alien is… 68 pages.
- 1:19:11Dillon Gilbertson: That's not bad.
- 1:19:12Tad Eggleston: It'd actually be the shortest option.
- 1:19:14Matt: Yeah.
- 1:19:15Dillon Gilbertson: We could do both.
- 1:19:16Dillon Gilbertson: New Hailing?
- 1:19:18Peter Eggleston Connor: both in one sitting, or do Alien one night and the other one another?
- 1:19:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Also, we're still on record.
- 1:19:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah?
- 1:19:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Cool.
- 1:19:30Tad Eggleston: We're still recording.
- 1:19:33Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think we could pretty easily do… I mean, it'd still be less than any of the new issues if we decided to do…
- 1:19:42Dillon Gilbertson: Sweet.
- 1:19:43Tad Eggleston: Alien, I mean, particularly because you know we wouldn't actually spend the same amount of time on 68 pages of Alien as we'd spend on 68 pages that had 5 different stories.
- 1:19:56Peter Eggleston Connor: So, I don't.
- 1:19:57Dillon Gilbertson: We don't.
- 1:19:57Peter Eggleston Connor: with that.
- 1:19:59Tad Eggleston: Why don't we do both Alien in its entirety, And… August is 79.
- 1:20:07Matt: Sounds good to me.
- 1:20:09Dillon Gilbertson: Sounds good.
- 1:20:10Tad Eggleston: Let's do it.
- 1:20:13Tad Eggleston: Do we want to preview our August?
- 1:20:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 1:20:16Tad Eggleston: We haven't previewed lately. Let's do it.
- 1:20:19Matt: Review.
- 1:20:21Peter Eggleston Connor: So, when we led August of 78, I downloaded August of 79,
- 1:20:27Peter Eggleston Connor: And I've had it downloaded ever since.
- 1:20:30Tad Eggleston: Hey, hey.
- 1:20:31Peter Eggleston Connor: credit.
- 1:20:36Tad Eggleston: So… it's got an interesting cover.
- 1:20:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 1:20:41Tad Eggleston: Very gold, but then cartoony.
- 1:20:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Good morning, huh?
- 1:20:47Matt: Hmm.
- 1:20:53Tad Eggleston: NBA was in Dracula, the love story.
- 1:20:56Tad Eggleston: And Donald Pleasance?
- 1:20:59Matt: Looks like…
- 1:21:02Tad Eggleston: So we got some… We got more Chantel Montelier.
- 1:21:12Tad Eggleston: We got more Mobius.
- 1:21:17Tad Eggleston: More of on Bodie.
- 1:21:21Tad Eggleston: We've got another Peter Cooper.
- 1:21:24Tad Eggleston: We've got a Kazaar.
- 1:21:28Tad Eggleston: Got another… another The Bus by Paul Cooper.
- 1:21:33Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's interesting. Todd Klein doesn't… illustration.
- 1:21:38Tad Eggleston: He's…
- 1:21:39Matt: He does an illustratos.
- 1:21:46Matt: Sorry.
- 1:21:48Tad Eggleston: Somebody illustrated… Sympathy for the devil?
- 1:21:53Tad Eggleston: And there's a Jim Starlin.
- 1:21:58Matt: Oh, nice!
- 1:22:00Tad Eggleston: That's…
- 1:22:01Peter Eggleston Connor: geographic.
- 1:22:03Tad Eggleston: Val Maverick for Time Out Opus?
- 1:22:10Tad Eggleston: Great, trap comes back…
- 1:22:16Tad Eggleston: This is kinda cool, freeways?
- 1:22:20Matt: Dragon World looks great.
- 1:22:22Peter Eggleston Connor: It's a story…
- 1:22:25Matt: I might actually read this one.
- 1:22:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Works great.
- 1:22:28Tad Eggleston: Oh, there's Star Crown.
- 1:22:29Peter Eggleston Connor: But we'll see.
- 1:22:36Tad Eggleston: We get more… more… more Kirby-esque Mobius.
- 1:22:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, God.
- 1:22:49Tad Eggleston: The glue… the Monsieur Glue Glue?
- 1:22:51Dillon Gilbertson: Glue glue.
- 1:22:54Tad Eggleston: Glau, glao? I don't know.
- 1:22:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Dragon World's got cool enough art that it might be worth reading.
- 1:23:02Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, yeah.
- 1:23:04Tad Eggleston: Peter Cooper's space story looks cool. New Arc City.
- 1:23:08Tad Eggleston: Also looks pretty cool.
- 1:23:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 1:23:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Especially with those monkeys, grabbing that man's liver bud.
- 1:23:16Peter Eggleston Connor: We'll get to it.
- 1:23:27Dillon Gilbertson: What the hell?
- 1:23:31Tad Eggleston: Where's that?
- 1:23:32Tad Eggleston: carries?
- 1:23:40Tad Eggleston: Sympathy for the devil does actually look pretty cool.
- 1:23:43Matt: It does, I was just checking that out.
- 1:23:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah… at a glance, it looks like another banger.
- 1:23:57Matt: Yup.
- 1:24:00Peter Eggleston Connor: A lot of interesting-looking stuff.
- 1:24:04Tad Eggleston: So, Matt?
- 1:24:06Tad Eggleston: You're the man.
- 1:24:07Matt: We'll continue after the next page.
