- 0:01Well, the studio's had an upgrade.
- 0:03This is fantastic.
- 0:04That'll change, hasn't it?
- 0:06And Tony's here.
- 0:07Oh, don't start.
- 0:08I'm okay with his hair.
- 0:10I understand the reason he's done the beard, but doesn't he half look different when he shaves your face?
- 0:16Yeah, look like a tennis ball.
- 0:18You have to get it done, though, because it's going to be a long month for you.
- 0:21Yeah, it is.
- 0:22What have you done it for?
- 0:23Movember.
- 0:24Just getting men talking.
- 0:26So I just think we should be talking.
- 0:28Everyone's struggling and problems.
- 0:30You know what?
- 0:32I appeared on IFL's...
- 0:35program last night Coogan Cassius who does IFL London the broadcasting thing his platform he'd done something for men's metal I'd done 24 hours of interviewing people yesterday and I was talking to him and he just broke down crying after the match last night I stopped at the services and I was talking to him and he just broke down crying it broke my heart
- 0:55I messaged him when I got home two o'clock this morning.
- 0:57I said, you're okay, you're sure and that and stuff.
- 0:58But he was still recording the things.
- 1:01And I just said, why do you think?
- 1:02Why do you feel so ashamed of... And he just said, I shouldn't be doing it.
- 1:07And I said, lad, everyone's going through something.
- 1:09There's nothing wrong in talking about how you feel.
- 1:11So, yeah, and that's just one person.
- 1:14I think I'd...
- 1:15I mean, I'm really pleased that it's getting talked about, and we have to, and it's important.
- 1:20But he won't be the last person that starts crying just talking to you.
- 1:23Will he?
- 1:25Well, Newcastle...
- 1:26I feel like doing it every week.
- 1:27Well, Newcastle...
- 1:28I did speak to a couple of Newcastle fans on the way out last night.
- 1:31They looked like they were close to tears.
- 1:32Oh, you went to game, didn't you?
- 1:33Of course I went to game, son.
- 1:34Of course I went to game.
- 1:35I was hoping I was going to see little legs there, but...
- 1:37You just let one of the babies go.
- 1:39I did, yeah.
- 1:41My middle kid went.
- 1:42He texted me on Thursday and said, Dad, if I get a ticket and I sort my travel and you don't need to worry, can I go to the game at Newcastle?
- 1:51I was like, who with?
- 1:53How old was he?
- 1:5418, just 18.
- 1:55He went, who with?
- 1:57And he went to this mate and that mate.
- 1:58And I was like, yeah, it sounds like you'll have a great idea.
- 2:01No problem, yeah.
- 2:02Have fun.
- 2:02And then five minutes later, I've gone to myself.
- 2:04Shit.
- 2:05Has he asked his mum?
- 2:05The real boss in the audience.
- 2:09Because I was thinking, I usually don't get asked these conversations.
- 2:12So I texted back and said, did you ask your mum?
- 2:14He went, God, no.
- 2:15He's done well.
- 2:16But you said yet now.
- 2:17No, no, no.
- 2:17And I was like, yeah, fair enough.
- 2:18Well done.
- 2:19What did Jenny say?
- 2:19I wish she wasn't happy with you.
- 2:21I didn't tell her.
- 2:21I didn't tell her until four o'clock yesterday afternoon.
- 2:23He was halfway there.
- 2:24Oh, no.
- 2:26I'm only joking.
- 2:27He is a good omen.
- 2:29Do you know what?
- 2:31I don't know if he's told you that, but he is.
- 2:33Well, that's his third proper away game.
- 2:35It's a forest away.
- 2:36He's won 1-0.
- 2:38Corey...
- 2:40The core it was, the last minute goal was it?
- 2:42A couple of years back.
- 2:43And he's done two this year, Preston and Newcastle.
- 2:46Carter's done three away.
- 2:48Carter's done United away and this away.
- 2:52It's the best age, isn't it, to do the aways?
- 2:54To do it on his own.
- 2:55Yeah, when I was 18, I loved it.
- 2:57I got like 10 that first season when I was 18.
- 2:59He has done a few away games, like I've took him or he's gone with his brother, but to go just with him and his mates.
- 3:05That's a big one.
- 3:06On the coach, I think we heard from the Falcon.
- 3:08I don't think I got that, R-Coby.
- 3:08On the coach from the Falcon last night.
- 3:10Oh, mate.
- 3:10I don't think I got that, R-Coby, because R-Coby went wrestling last night, otherwise I'd have to talk to the Elk.
- 3:15You should have sent him to Newcastle.
- 3:16Oh, mate.
- 3:17So, yeah, I took Carter and Corey, and Carter was tired getting up this morning.
- 3:22We're home at 2 o'clock this morning, but...
- 3:25because Mar's not happy with me.
- 3:27Deacon didn't get in until three, and I think he staggered through the door.
- 3:30Still sinking.
- 3:32Well done, son.
- 3:32Well done, Matt.
- 3:33To get a taxi home from where he got dropped off the bus.
- 3:35Brilliant.
- 3:36What a boy.
- 3:37What a lad.
- 3:37What a game.
- 3:38What a performance.
- 3:39Oh, it was, yeah.
- 3:40I mean, a great week.
- 3:43I mean, it's hard to say, you know, a lot's happened since we last spoke, and there's some great performances, off-field issues.
- 3:52Where do we start?
- 3:53Just last night on its own,
- 3:55Let's go over there seeing as you went, Tony went the game.
- 3:58Our best performances of the season.
- 4:00I mean, let's start with you.
- 4:01You were there.
- 4:02Yeah.
- 4:02How was it at the stadium?
- 4:03Atmosphere was brilliant on our way into St. James Park getting booed.
- 4:07You're up in the gods though, aren't you?
- 4:08Yeah, but maybe walked up 25 flights of stairs and I did count them.
- 4:14He can literally text me, Dad, these stairs ain't no joke.
- 4:17I'm exhausted.
- 4:18Ain't a joke, you know.
- 4:20These stairs ain't for the week, Dad.
- 4:24He did.
- 4:24He did.
- 4:24He said he went in an hour early and he'd got to his seat half an hour to go.
- 4:29That's it.
- 4:29You know what?
- 4:30We got there the same time.
- 4:31I parked the car, got myself a ticket.
- 4:35But you know what?
- 4:35We got there, the atmosphere in there was brilliant.
- 4:37Everyone was singing, everyone was on top of it.
- 4:41It was just brilliant.
- 4:42It was fantastic.
- 4:44That's one of the very few grounds I haven't been to.
- 4:46Was it?
- 4:47Yeah, I've never been there.
- 4:48I haven't been to St James Park and I said to the lads, me two lads and Jacko who come with us, I said, I'm telling you now, statistically, this is the best away ground for us over the last, I would say, five years.
- 5:00And I was thinking that in my head, but I said it out loud.
- 5:02And I couldn't, why did you just say that, Dad?
- 5:05And I just went, I said it like, because I'm talking it out loud.
- 5:07I'd go even longer than that, because in our last podcast I said, I fancy us to do all right against Newcastle.
- 5:12I said, we've got a really good record, even in my time, of playing Newcastle, of beating Newcastle, especially at their place.
- 5:21Do you take that on board, when you're on the bus going down up there?
- 5:25Are you talking about that as players?
- 5:30Yeah, I think so, a little bit.
- 5:32But it's just a feeling, you know, when you turn up somewhere and you're like, oh, I love this place.
- 5:37It just makes you play, makes you sort of feel confident, comfortable.
- 5:42You go there knowing you've got a good history there.
- 5:46Remembering some, I mean, that's good.
- 5:48At least a couple of goals up at Newcastle.
- 5:54usually in front of the Everton fans, which obviously makes it even sweeter.
- 5:58So you'd always go there.
- 5:59And by the way, it is a tough place to go at times.
- 6:02They make it difficult.
- 6:03You can go, I've been there and been beaten plenty of times.
- 6:06But as the away team, yeah, we've gone there and done well.
- 6:09And I...
- 6:10I fancied us, I really did.
- 6:12Did you, before we move on that, from where you are in the stand, high up in the rafters, can you see the hill?
- 6:17Yeah.
- 6:18Or the hill?
- 6:19Can you see the hill?
- 6:20The pitch, no.
- 6:20Because you're at the very top of the hill.
- 6:22Oh, are we?
- 6:23Yeah.
- 6:23You know what, I only asked you that question because I've watched documentaries and I've recently watched the Millennial one, I thought it was absolutely amazing.
- 6:31Yeah, it's class.
- 6:31Joe Millennial's one of my heroes, I think he's an absolute legend of the game and I love him, I think he's brilliant.
- 6:36But I listen to Frank Lampard, and I've heard him in a number of interviews and stuff like that, and Frank Lampard always has...
- 6:43He speaks...
- 6:44The way you've just spoke about St. Jude's Park, he speaks like that about White Hart Lane.
- 6:48You know, he used to call it a three-point lane.
- 6:50Yeah, they call it that range.
- 6:53So I just think, you know, as players... Because I've never...
- 6:56In my dreams, you wish you was a player, but you think to yourself, are they a turn and all?
- 7:00Because...
- 7:01What we're doing here is you're a player, so we, as fans, like me and Liam, run against the side, what are you thinking when you're turning up there?
- 7:08And to me, that must be a great feeling.
- 7:10Yeah.
- 7:11So what was your feeling the same when you turned up at Anfield?
- 7:18I'm playing on a play.
- 7:19I feel different.
- 7:20You know, Liverpool, despite them being a good team, raised their game.
- 7:24The atmosphere is incredible.
- 7:25But Derby is something different.
- 7:27Is it?
- 7:28Completely.
- 7:29Yeah, whereas going to the likes of Chelsea, when they were flying Mourinho 5-6-7, or 5-0-6-0-7, you're thinking, I felt like they loved coming to go.
- 7:40We're in for a tough day here.
- 7:43We need to be really, really good.
- 7:45And...
- 7:46I'm not saying I felt bad, and I'm not saying you go into those games being like, oh my God, I'm nervous and I don't want to get on the ball, but you go in there thinking, we've got to be at our best to get something here.
- 7:58And yeah, whether you want to or not, you do, you're not defeated before you got there, but you're fighting that mental thing as well.
- 8:07By the way, we went and got a couple of good results.
- 8:09Chelsea went through in the cup on penalties.
- 8:13Kiles over a kick.
- 8:15That was a great goal.
- 8:16That was a great game.
- 8:17Was that 2-2?
- 8:18Was that the 2-2 draw?
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:19I think it was a cup.
- 8:21I can't even remember.
- 8:22Yeah.
- 8:23I can't remember the width, but we had a couple of times that we did okay, but the majority, it was tough down there.
- 8:29But Newcastle, yeah, it just feels a good place to go.
- 8:34And I felt that, and I've got to be honest, the performance we put in in the Carabao Cup, which we'll come back to in a bit,
- 8:44I think David Moyes said it himself, made me think they're going to have to raise their game.
- 8:49They're going to go into this game at home.
- 8:51Crowd are going to get them.
- 8:52They're going to come flying at us in the first part of the game, especially with the animosity between Taki and Joel Linton, which was funny, by the way.
- 9:02I was made up with that.
- 9:03Yeah, but I thought they'd cut the way through.
- 9:06I just went and grabbed him literally by the neck.
- 9:08Just went, whoop, have a bit of that.
- 9:10But I thought we'd have to dig in for 20 minutes to get through and then we could grow in the game and it was anything.
- 9:17But we started quicker.
- 9:19We were moving the ball better.
- 9:20We were making better passes.
- 9:22We were going forward with it.
- 9:23They were giving it away.
- 9:24Were you surprised by how tame they were?
- 9:27Well, I'm going to go the other way and say it was just us being good.
- 9:31Because the reason we were able to play such good football is because the speed at which we won the ball back, every time we did give it away, we pounced on them.
- 9:42We won second balls brilliant.
- 9:44We won competing balls more often, nine times out of ten.
- 9:49Any contested ball, basically every one of our players, midfield especially,
- 9:54And I'm going right across the board and I'm including Tyreek George, who was very good out of possession as well as in possession, and Merlin Roll, who I thought was outstanding.
- 10:03And that's not to mention the midfield three, which dominated the game.
- 10:07That group of players never lost or very rarely lost a second ball or a duel.
- 10:14There you go, that's the word I'm looking for.
- 10:16They very rarely lost a duel.
- 10:17And that is why we were able to go on and dominate the game.
- 10:20Do you know what?
- 10:22when I was watching the game, I think we're such a different team at home.
- 10:25And I don't know what it is.
- 10:27Are we still finding our feet at Hill Dickinson?
- 10:29But we went there.
- 10:31We played so much better at their place.
- 10:33And let's be totally honest here.
- 10:34You've got to look at it.
- 10:35At Hill Dickinson...
- 10:38They've left a couple of players out.
- 10:39Joe Linton doesn't play starts every week.
- 10:42At Hill Dickinson, they can kind of accept it, but that's the best team they had at their place.
- 10:46At Hill Dickinson, I thought we were a bit nervous at times.
- 10:50We get the goal and it settles us a little bit, but we're still not bopping it round like we was at their place.
- 10:55It's a far better performance at their place than it was at Hill Dickinson.
- 10:59There's absolutely no excuse for that.
- 11:03I think as players, they should have been doing that at the Hill Dickinson.
- 11:06But it's a, I don't know, it's a sense of freedom.
- 11:09Well, from a fan looking out from the outside, from my perspective is, there's a sense of freedom when we go away.
- 11:14There's no pressure and it's shown at St James' last night because they were just bopping that round having a laugh.
- 11:20They were just, they were, you know, there was players just getting that Newcastle team and the,
- 11:24They were trying.
- 11:25It's not like they stopped running.
- 11:27That team hasn't downed tools on that manager, because they were chasing after everything.
- 11:31They were trying their best.
- 11:32They just weren't good enough.
- 11:34And the lads were brilliant.
- 11:34The short-sided stuff, knocking, playing out.
- 11:37They were fantastic.
- 11:38Jordan Pickford was obviously right up for it, as he always is when he plays them.
- 11:42But he's up for it when he plays anyone.
- 11:43But I just thought the middle of the park were, like Ozzy said, winning duels.
- 11:47Addison Armstrong ran so much mail and roll was brilliant.
- 11:50Like, I've said that and I said that at the start of the season about how big Keane and Juice Borel is for us.
- 11:55I couldn't believe how much space he had on the pitch yesterday.
- 11:57That's the worrying factor.
- 11:58Like, I don't want to put a mark on our performance in any way, shape or form.
- 12:03but they're bang and trouble Newcastle.
- 12:05They are bang and trouble.
- 12:07I was worried when he was appointed and they had a couple of decent results and I'm probably more worried for them now.
- 12:15Did you hear Dan Byrne's interview after the game?
- 12:17I don't know if you've heard that.
- 12:19I was too busy on TalkSport celebrating.
- 12:21Giving stick out to come to you, no matter.
- 12:25Dan Byrne basically...
- 12:27I'm linking it to your point of Newcastle actually came to the Earl Dickinson.
- 12:34Despite us winning, they bopped it round well.
- 12:36They had chances.
- 12:37They had chances.
- 12:39They actually played really well.
- 12:42But we sat in with defensively solid and scored three quality goals when the opportunity came.
- 12:47At their place, they seem to get a little bit nervous.
- 12:51In the same way that you said at Hill Dickinson, we should have been popping it round, we looked a little bit nervous to start with in the game.
- 12:59When we went there, we played well.
- 13:01Dan Verne came out after the game and they asked him about him being a Geordie and him being disappointed as a fan and as a player at the result.
- 13:11And he basically went, we are, I am, but it's not easy to play in your stadium in these moments.
- 13:20And you can feel it.
- 13:21You can definitely feel it when you're out there.
- 13:22But isn't this why the professional footballers, you've got to learn to deal with that?
- 13:25I was going to say, how big is that battle?
- 13:27Surely as a professional footballer, you've just almost got to block that out and go, I've still got to perform here.
- 13:32Yeah, look, you can mentally sort of try and go into your zone, into your shell, and you're looking at it, but...
- 13:39And you can definitely zone out individual voices and individual names.
- 13:44And even songs, you can, for the most part, zone out a crowd singing a song.
- 13:48But you can't zone out the tone and the noise.
- 13:54You can't zone out feeling.
- 13:56It seeps onto the pitch all the time.
- 13:58So as a player...
- 14:03Surely you've got to be able to go... Is the captain coming over to you and going, Hey lad, it's here now.
- 14:10Pick up.
- 14:11We've got to perform better.
- 14:12Whose job is that?
- 14:14Being on a football pitch like that soccer and stuff like that, I couldn't hear a word anyone saying.
- 14:20So, you know, I saw that and that's only a little dopes insight.
- 14:24You're a player.
- 14:25Is the captain going, oh, you're going, hey, this is not going well.
- 14:27You sort yourself out.
- 14:28There has to be some people on the pitch, whether it be the captain, whether it be other people.
- 14:33Certain times in my career, it was, you know, I'd take the responsibility to do it.
- 14:37But it's hard to stop momentum.
- 14:39But I'm not a footballer.
- 14:41I'm petrified.
- 14:42I'm genuinely scared on a football pitch when people are watching me because I'm a clown.
- 14:46I'm good at having a fight.
- 14:47But you're a professional footballer.
- 14:48That's what you're like.
- 14:49I'm never nervous in a boxing ring.
- 14:50And I'm never, even if I'm getting smashed and I'm getting beat up, I know my time's going to come.
- 14:55As a footballer for you, are you thinking, like last night with that Newcastle team, you've just said that I didn't think about that.
- 15:01They played how we were playing at Hill Dickinson.
- 15:03Yeah, they looked nervous.
- 15:04And we've gone their place and played how they were started at our place.
- 15:08And you're absolutely spot on.
- 15:09So why?
- 15:11Why are they doing that?
- 15:12Why did they come to Hill Dickinson and bop it round the way we did when we've gone to their place?
- 15:17We've played a better team.
- 15:19at the St James' so that was a better version of Newcastle when we got to St James' each left a few out to come to Hill Dickinson and they were bopping it round the park at times and we were nervous but yeah we've gone to St James' now with basically the same team was it exactly the same team that played at Hill Dickinson?
- 15:34they made two changes they landed no no I'm talking about Everton
- 15:37Hayden got dropped.
- 15:39Hayden got dropped.
- 15:39Jared Branthwaite was in, centrally.
- 15:43Diblin was left out and Merlin Roll went up to the right.
- 15:46But they don't really affect us bopping it round.
- 15:50They don't affect...
- 15:51I'm telling you now, the way we went about Newcastle-St. James' Park, why aren't we going about them like that at Hill Dickinson?
- 15:58And ultimately, why aren't...
- 16:01Newcastle going and getting arrows and about.
- 16:03Like, that is mad to think that just an environment can change players.
- 16:09The feeling that seeps down as the pitch can influence the game, whether you want to or not.
- 16:14That also is the flip side of that.
- 16:15When Newcastle are playing, let's just say, Man United, or when we were playing Man United, let's use the same thing, the crowd's excitement and desire and that, baying for blood, basically, let's get a tackle in and that...
- 16:29That seeps down onto the pitch as well.
- 16:30When you're playing against a team that you've kind of seen as maybe a slight underdog, the crowd are right.
- 16:37But honestly, they are the 13th man.
- 16:40And Newcastle fans will be feeling that as well.
- 16:41It seeps onto the pitch.
- 16:43It gives you that extra.
- 16:44The extra yard, the excitement, the extra couple of centimetres in a tackle to stretch a bit more.
- 16:48It gives you all of that.
- 16:49I'm just saying, as what Dan Byrne was saying, the Newcastle fans did not help them last night.
- 16:54And I've experienced it.
- 16:56I don't think that's acceptable, him saying that.
- 16:59Because they're supporting you week in, week out.
- 17:01And it's not acceptable to be walking on to 4-0.
- 17:03It's going, we're feeling your tension.
- 17:05But you know what, mate?
- 17:06Do something about it.
- 17:09Do something about it.
- 17:10That's not fair.
- 17:10Look, everyone... Everyone...
- 17:13goes out there with the best intentions, and everyone goes out there to play well.
- 17:18But you have to ride the moments in the game, and we started brilliantly.
- 17:23And as well, you know, you're talking about the reasons why we play well, better at home.
- 17:27Despite us playing the same team, they tactically may have done something different.
- 17:32Did they, though?
- 17:33And...
- 17:34What I will say is we had so much space in midfield.
- 17:37Their guy, Nico Gonzalez, the one from City, centre midfielder, can't move.
- 17:44He couldn't get about the pitch.
- 17:45And our three were dominating them areas of the pitch.
- 17:48I couldn't believe how much space we had.
- 17:49Because he literally couldn't get about the pitch.
- 17:51And our players were one in the middle of us.
- 17:53Well, it seemed like because of how well we played.
- 17:55But we started well.
- 17:57They did not start well.
- 17:58They now need to get in the game.
- 18:00The ball comes to one or two players.
- 18:01It's rolling under their feet because the crowd is being like, you haven't been in touch for 10 minutes, come on.
- 18:06You need to get in the ball.
- 18:07One or two players, you know, it makes you a bit uptight and nervous.
- 18:12When you talk like that, it makes it so clear that...
- 18:18Playing at home is a hindrance to them at the minute.
- 18:21Well, it's not a hindrance to everyone.
- 18:23But when there's an expectation, and especially after we've just gone and beat them at our place, at Hill Dickinson, after they played well, they would have turned up thinking, if we play that way again, we'll beat them at home.
- 18:34And they've started the game, and after 10, 15 minutes in, they're like, come on, we've not touched it.
- 18:38Come on, get on.
- 18:39Stop, run round.
- 18:40And they were right to, because we were winning every single battle.
- 18:43But by doing that,
- 18:45Then you see one or two players, not everyone, but one or two players go, oh, no, this is...
- 18:49I don't think that's acceptable.
- 18:52As a professional footballer, and that's your job.
- 18:55That's your job, mate.
- 18:56Yeah, I think there's levels to it.
- 18:58A normal Premier League game like that, I don't think they can say.
- 19:01It's not acceptable, is it?
- 19:02If they were playing Champions League finals or something.
- 19:04Friends would come out and have said it afterwards.
- 19:06I'm going to have to watch his interview and I really like Dan Bairn he looks like a normal fella one of the lads and to front it up is he the captain of Newcastle?
- 19:14Yeah to come out and front it up there after because that's a sickening loss for them because lads I'll be honest they look like that's the worst
- 19:23I've seen them.
- 19:24Of all the teams I've seen us play this season, they're the weakest.
- 19:27I'm made up because I've always had to hate Newcastle.
- 19:31Without sounding by, and I'm not, Everton were brilliant, we were fantastic, but I'm not going to lie, the space Keane and Dews we always allowed, the running in Merlin Roll was doing behind them, they're not doing enough, and I'm telling you now, of all the teams I've seen us play this season stand-alone, they're the weakest.
- 19:47Because they're not covered in enough ground.
- 19:49Like, I've been away from home to, let's just say, a lot of places, even like Man United at times.
- 19:58And you can feel, if the fans are turning up nervous...
- 20:02I mean, it happened less so at the start of the career, but more as United started falling away.
- 20:10If you turn up and you can feel the opposition's nerves, the fan base, you can feel them.
- 20:14And I'm telling you, Everton last night would have thrived on the opposition, on the feeling that was coming down off the home fans.
- 20:23They would have known because they would have felt...
- 20:25oh, they got on the players' back for having a bad touch there.
- 20:28So the next time, I'm going to get right in his face and I bet he's already nervous.
- 20:32And if they're growing again, I'm having it.
- 20:34And suddenly you're using as much as you can use your home fans to help you play better, which we're one of the best for being able to do that in a lot of games.
- 20:46Last night, we were able to use the away fans.
- 20:49Sorry, we were able to use their fans.
- 20:51We were the home fans to our own advantage.
- 20:54David Moyes is making little tactical moves and it's really clever like playing Merlin Roll last night over like an Ainsley Maitland-Niles or playing Jake O'Brien, it's really smart and clever because you could just go right, I'm putting the conventional right back in but there's reasons he's putting players in positions that he's playing them.
- 21:13We looked more physical than them yesterday We just bullied them I bullied them and I'll pass them
- 21:18Yeah, I thought Merlin Roll's position right midfield was a great move because in the first game, one of the big outlets for getting forward was Lewis Hull.
- 21:33who, by the way, towards the end of the game, I wanted to drive to Newcastle and leave one on him myself, even though I don't fight, from his reaction on Harrison Armstrong, which was out of order from him.
- 21:44Yeah, that was bad.
- 21:44And I was hoping one of our guys grabbed him or something at least, but...
- 21:50Naughty that was.
- 21:52It was.
- 21:52They were just frustrated, but it's still naughty, and one of us should have reacted to that.
- 21:56But in the first game, he was an outlet.
- 21:59We kept finding him down.
- 22:00Not that Diblin wasn't tracking him back properly.
- 22:03He was, but he's very, very quick, Lewis Hall.
- 22:07And if you've seen the first part of the game, we kept just... Every time Merlin Roll got into his stride, we just put the ball in that corner because he's so quick.
- 22:14And for the most part, Lewis Hall was able to kind of get with him.
- 22:18So...
- 22:19That's why we played Merlin right midfield to kind of stop him.
- 22:24But Merlin showed me a lot more going forward than I've seen.
- 22:28I thought his passes off the line.
- 22:30I thought maybe that's because he's had a bit of a run at right back over the season.
- 22:35And maybe he's been on the pitch more.
- 22:36And maybe he's now, as you do, you feel your way into a season of performances.
- 22:41And he's...
- 22:42Now flicking them around the corner and playing passes inside and coming in and following his pass.
- 22:47But he looked a lot more assured in possession in that area.
- 22:52And I thought it was a very good tactical move.
- 22:55And maybe it was one of the reasons was to get a bit more hype because Jake O'Brien came in.
- 23:00Well, he never came in.
- 23:01He played centre-back in the first game.
- 23:02Moved to right-back for the second game.
- 23:04Great from him.
- 23:06And it's been criticised playing Jake O'Brien at right back at times, but it was obviously the right move.
- 23:11He's come out and said he thinks he's centre-off.
- 23:13Well, he is.
- 23:14Yeah, he is, of course, but it shows the maturity of him to go, I'll do whatever he asks me to do.
- 23:20It shows the maturity of the player, and it shows the trust that the manager has in him.
- 23:23He's also, though, made a statement, said, I want to be a centre-back, I don't want to be a right back, I'm getting criticised, blah, blah, blah, blah, I want to be a centre-back.
- 23:32He's not played for quite a while.
- 23:34He's come in at centre-back and then just said, just keep me in the team.
- 23:36Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:38I'm sorry.
- 23:39I'm sorry.
- 23:39Put me up front.
- 23:40Put me up front.
- 23:41Sorry, Gaffer.
- 23:42I'll do it.
- 23:43I'm a good boy.
- 23:45And he might not be in the team the next game.
- 23:47You know, it depends who we've got and whether it's actually a beneficial car.
- 23:51Can you change that team also?
- 23:52Yes, you can.
- 23:53And the reason you can is...
- 23:55not being disrespectful to Coventry, but going away from home to a Newcastle or maybe, let's just say it was a Chelsea or maybe someone else, you need different sort of attributes and you need to cover different areas than you might do against a different team at home, not being disrespectful to Coventry.
- 24:11No, we need to be, because they need to behave themselves to get too many points for my life.
- 24:15Is this another one of them teams?
- 24:17Yeah, it's rubbing me up the wrong way.
- 24:18They beat Sunderland.
- 24:19We need to put them back in the place.
- 24:21We'll need different sort of armoury or weapons to beat...
- 24:24Coventry than we would to beat...
- 24:26They're going to have a much more fight than Newcastle, I'm not going to lie.
- 24:30But then again, now that my mindset's changing and my thought process is changing because of what he said, I actually wish we were going to Coventry's place.
- 24:40I mean, bottles are going a bit now already.
- 24:42Well, it is that kind of performance.
- 24:44If we turn up and the crowd will be behind us, absolutely.
- 24:48But if we're not, if it's 1-0 to them or 0-0 at half-time, the nervousness will be there, the frustration will be there.
- 24:54Because we expect to win and we should be the better team.
- 24:57So are you urging us a player?
- 24:59You're urging us, just keep cheering us on?
- 25:01Or like, what can we do as fans?
- 25:03How can we take that nervousness away from you?
- 25:05Yeah.
- 25:06Well, you'd say, do I wish that we could cheer us on?
- 25:08Of course I do, but is that realistic?
- 25:11No, because I turn up myself.
- 25:15And I go, come on!
- 25:17I am a fan myself.
- 25:18I do the exact same thing, so I am not...
- 25:21I'm one of us.
- 25:23I know exactly how it feels.
- 25:24We've walked into the match on the weekend and gone, listen, lads, no one can be shouting.
- 25:27No, just... That's what I'm saying.
- 25:30I'm saying that it's not easy.
- 25:33I was just explaining the situation.
- 25:35I know we're going there expecting to beat Covetry, whether we want to or not.
- 25:39I know we're going there hoping that we can be...
- 25:43a couple of goals ahead after 20 minutes.
- 25:46And if we're not, we'll be like, come on, lads.
- 25:48Hurry up, lads.
- 25:48Come on.
- 25:49Come on.
- 25:49Oh, we've missed another chance.
- 25:52Now you're starting to get... First goal last night was crucial.
- 25:54Yes.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:55First goal's crucial because they scored first last night and you can feel it.
- 25:59Like, that place would have went nuts, wouldn't it?
- 26:0252,000 in there last night, that would have went nuts.
- 26:04I was watching the game with my eldest on the telly and all.
- 26:09And...
- 26:10even from home.
- 26:12I was thinking, when they got a corner in the 90th minute, I said to the caller, I said, if they score one, they'll score two.
- 26:20That's the way it felt, as good as we'd been in the game.
- 26:23You felt that if we had conceded with, what was it, eight minutes of injury time?
- 26:28That save Jordan Pickford makes with his legs.
- 26:30Oh my lord.
- 26:31Great save.
- 26:31Oh my lord.
- 26:32Do you know the one that it's the post from Alanga?
- 26:36It spins and hits his elbow.
- 26:37I'm pretty sure.
- 26:38Did you see the one that scraped the long line?
- 26:42It went flash across the goal, a longer sort of meter at the back.
- 26:45I think it did have to touch because the way the ball spun back the other way.
- 26:48It's spinning one way, Jordan's sort of going for it, realising it's on his inside shoulder.
- 26:54And he's half trying to get out of the way of it, but he sort of gets his elbow just enough on it and it just bounces on the line.
- 27:01And then Tarky kicks it away.
- 27:04And even that was a really important touch.
- 27:07It goes under the radar how good he is.
- 27:10Genuinely does.
- 27:10I put it on my social media yesterday and I just put, you'd seen a clip of him and I was put, so underrated because he plays for Everton Football Club.
- 27:18So overlooked.
- 27:20Never put a foot wrong for England.
- 27:21We got to finals because of that lad.
- 27:23And like I said, it's a crime.
- 27:26I think he's been the best keeper in the league this season so far.
- 27:28He's been absolutely fantastic.
- 27:29He's been the best keeper of the last...
- 27:31Few seasons?
- 27:32Again, I'll just go back to the end of every season when you look at competition for save of the season.
- 27:39He's got three months worth.
- 27:42Three winners from at least three months in the season.
- 27:45My mate's a proper football historian.
- 27:47He's one of the lead publicists for The Zone.
- 27:49He's massive, just Walker.
- 27:51But he's an audible cop-out.
- 27:52He's proper bitter.
- 27:54He despises him.
- 27:54He's an audible cop-out before.
- 27:56He is an audible, audible cop-out.
- 27:57Or do you know more than one?
- 28:00Yeah, I know a few to be fair.
- 28:01There's another one called Rob Gag.
- 28:03He's absolutely despicable as well.
- 28:05He supports Liverpool and anyone who's playing Everton.
- 28:07They put Tuna on me last night and big flags flying around before the game.
- 28:11That worked out well, didn't it, lads?
- 28:12You're a pair of honourable cop-outs.
- 28:14But when you're talking about these, he's not usually biased, walks in, he knows football, and he's an average Premier League keeper, but he's not.
- 28:24I said, you're lying.
- 28:25He's England No.
- 28:261, he's this and that.
- 28:28Jordan Pickford and on Hart, I reckon he saves Everton 20 points a season.
- 28:34I know that sounds a lot, but I'm not joking.
- 28:37There's three last night.
- 28:38Because there's two big, massive saves.
- 28:41And that one with the feet at the end, Ozzy's spot on.
- 28:44That goal goes in, and that's not his fault, by the way, because that's a deflection.
- 28:48And he's just in the right place to get his feet to it.
- 28:50That's not luck.
- 28:51That's no one positioning how you've done it.
- 28:53But like Ozzy said, if that goes in...
- 28:56by his legs, there's a good 5-10 minutes left there to play, because there's 8 minutes stoppage time, I think he saves it with his feet, just before the 88th minute, I think it was, something like that, that goes in us, and the ascendancy's with them, and that's a killer, that's 3 points gone, and that's the keeper, I know it's a team game, and he played, as I said, as a team, it's one of the best performances I've ever seen of Everton away from home, that's how good it was, but the keeper is...
- 29:23them points made, I'm sorry, but he is a massive factor last night.
- 29:29That save keeps you points.
- 29:32I agree.
- 29:32Quick one.
- 29:33Are you saying it's the best you've witnessed personally away from home?
- 29:38Are you saying it's one of the best ever performances away from home?
- 29:41It's one of the best I've witnessed from a footballing perspective yet.
- 29:45Being in the stadium.
- 29:46Being in the stadium, watching them, watching them just pass them off the park.
- 29:50Yeah, I just wanted to clarify that for those Everton fans that might be listening and thinking, best ever away performance.
- 29:55No, no, it's one, I'm not, I'm sorry, it's not the result.
- 29:57No, it's fine, it's one you've witnessed yourself as well.
- 30:00I've witnessed them watching, we went to Arsenal one year.
- 30:02and I forget what year it is, but we were right at it with them.
- 30:05You were playing and they were amazing.
- 30:08I think we finished 1-1 or 2-2.
- 30:11It was the one where Peanut thinks the keeper.
- 30:14Yeah, the one where you forgot I scored.
- 30:15Yeah, we talked about that one.
- 30:18You forgot I played.
- 30:19Yeah, that day we went toe to toe with them.
- 30:21I didn't forget you played, just forgot you scored, you little weasel.
- 30:24But that day, we go toe-to-toe with them.
- 30:26And there's, like... Do you know when we went away to United last season, 1-1-0?
- 30:31That wasn't a great performance.
- 30:32That was a Dogs of War performance.
- 30:34We'd go on the road.
- 30:35And not just our own players punching each other after 10 minutes.
- 30:38That's my point I'm getting to.
- 30:40Whereas...
- 30:42that's not a great that's a great result but the performance of last night watching them knock it round what you used to call them things rondos you used to call them what you used to do it was like watching rondos at times the way the Newcastle because it's not like you're against the team you give up I still call them circles but yeah circles circles yeah
- 30:59Let's get a circle and pass the ball around.
- 31:01They just super had that one in.
- 31:03It's like when we used to just defend our edge of our box.
- 31:05No, it's low blocks.
- 31:06No, I was brought up with Rondo who was like, circles, that's a crazy shout out.
- 31:11That shows how young you are.
- 31:13Go on, lads, get a circle.
- 31:14The high press closing down.
- 31:16Let's get a circle.
- 31:17Right, lads, let's get a circle.
- 31:18Let's get a circle.
- 31:18Is that what you do?
- 31:19Are you warming up a train and getting a circle?
- 31:21Yeah, let's get a circle.
- 31:22Who's in the middle?
- 31:23No.
- 31:23I'm trying to think of a performance as one I've watched over the years.
- 31:27No.
- 31:27Do you know what another amazing woman's when I went away to Wolfsburg?
- 31:32Oh, yeah, I've got that one.
- 31:33Oh, wow, that was nuts.
- 31:35Banging it, bopping it round, going so much.
- 31:37And it's mad because when we're going away...
- 31:39I played that game with a broken foot.
- 31:42Did you?
- 31:42Yeah.
- 31:44I'd broken it against, I'm sure it was against Wolves on Saturday.
- 31:47I'd dislodged a little piece on the outside of the metatarsal area.
- 31:50Injection in it?
- 31:51And didn't even have an injection.
- 31:53But it was Roberto, and he'd left me out for the game.
- 31:56And I thought I was going to play, so I was like, I'm fit, I'll play.
- 31:59And then he put me on the bench, and I was on the bench thinking, I can't even run here.
- 32:02If he needs me, I'm struggling.
- 32:04And James McCarthy, unfortunately, was going through that period where he was pulling his hamstring every five minutes.
- 32:12And he'd come off after like 10 minutes.
- 32:13He went, Ozzy, you're going on.
- 32:14I was like, great.
- 32:15Oh, no.
- 32:18And I jumped on and I'd basically, the adrenaline just took over.
- 32:21We were amazing that night.
- 32:22I played, helped set up the second goal, I think it was.
- 32:26I wonder if I played it forward.
- 32:27Was it to Rom?
- 32:28And Rom played in Kemmerle, I think.
- 32:30Something like that.
- 32:32And we won 2-0.
- 32:34And...
- 32:35I was in the dressing room after the game nearly crying.
- 32:38Once the pain took over and then I got the x-ray and they went, you ain't playing for six weeks now.
- 32:44That was me out for six or seven weeks.
- 32:47The stories that we don't find out there, the stories that we don't get told as fans, and footballers playing with broken feet, that would never happen now.
- 32:54I'm sorry to say that.
- 32:55No, I wouldn't tell you.
- 32:57By the way, I was in agony.
- 32:58It killed me and I was like walking.
- 33:01People thought I was just normal because I've got one leg longer than the other, but I was actually limping that night.
- 33:04That's why I call them little legs people.
- 33:06That's why I've been calling them little legs all the time.
- 33:08People just didn't notice I was limping.
- 33:10But yeah, I just think as performances go, I suppose a fact that it is down to the Newcastle and where they are now to play them, but ultimately...
- 33:19performances I've seen over the years away from home Should we have scored more goals?
- 33:22Yes Absolutely Tieno misses a decent chance to start with, great little knockdown header from Jared Brantlewaite old school strike, a big man little man combination which you hardly see these days
- 33:35Every time a cross comes into the penalty area now from a free kick or whatever, every first contact in those positions, everyone goes for goal, regardless if you're on the edge of the box or not.
- 33:44But that was such a clever little intelligent header.
- 33:47You know, his fans last night were in the stadium and I've got to ask the question and I've got to ask you because you're the footballer.
- 33:54Keno's on the side and it's on 75 minutes and he's about to take the thing off and the gaffer stops at the last minute.
- 34:05If the gaffer brings Keanu on right and takes Barry off, what happens there?
- 34:10It depends what tactical shuffle you do.
- 34:13If you'd have put George up front and moved someone over here... No, no, no.
- 34:17I went through you.
- 34:17Oh, stop it.
- 34:18You know the question I've just asked.
- 34:19If he takes Keanu Barry off and Michael Keane goes up for them, what does that say, Oz?
- 34:24Because let me tell you... You're trying to scare me out of me.
- 34:27No, I'll say this quickly because, as I said, I was watching the game with Cole and...
- 34:33He said to me, he said, Dad, Corey's just texted me.
- 34:36We're bringing Kino on for George, it looks like.
- 34:38We're bringing Kino on for... Not for George, for Tear and O'Barry.
- 34:43He says he thinks we're bringing Kino on for Tear and O'Barry.
- 34:46I mean, I looked at each other and went, Oh, what?
- 34:49You can't, like, up front.
- 34:50It's funny that you're now saying that.
- 34:51It looked like that in the stadium, did it?
- 34:53In the stadium, to us, we're all fans and Peckers' mates and that are behind me.
- 34:57And we're all looking and thinking,
- 34:59Kino's going, now we're winning 1-0, but when you see Kino, you're thinking, there's nothing wrong with making tactical changes.
- 35:04Say he does bring Kino on, it depends, does he put him up front?
- 35:07I would doubt that in that moment, you'd expect him to put him at the back.
- 35:10What actually happened was Jared had got something that he needed to come off.
- 35:16But had he put him on for Tierno Barry, as long as...
- 35:20He just holds it up.
- 35:22No, I still don't think he would have put him up front.
- 35:24Had he decided that was the case, I think he'd have put three centre-halves on.
- 35:27I think he would have done something along them.
- 35:29So we're all reading too much into it in the same year.
- 35:32But going back to Tierno's chance... What if he did do us...
- 35:35Or if he said he was going to play more minutes up front than he was at Centre Back this season?
- 35:38What if he did do?
- 35:40As a fan base, how should we look at that?
- 35:42Because we've got one striker.
- 35:45I get it, and that's what I'm asking you for.
- 35:47Imagine he puts them on up front last night.
- 35:49They knock a ball up to him.
- 35:50He controls it.
- 35:51He just keeps hold of it.
- 35:52And he sends it off.
- 35:54I know we're laughing, but imagine he scores us.
- 35:58What do you do?
- 35:59I think he would score if he was given a... Look, he came on.
- 36:02What do you do if he scores?
- 36:04What do you mean?
- 36:04What do you do?
- 36:05I'd cheer.
- 36:06No, I know that.
- 36:06What do you want me to do?
- 36:07What do we do if he... Say, oh, no, get back there.
- 36:09No, I know.
- 36:10What do we do?
- 36:11If Michael Keane comes on right as a phone and scores a goal, what do we do?
- 36:15Michael Keane scores some great goals for his... Yeah.
- 36:17Do you mean, are we taking it serious that he might play up front and take turns with Barry?
- 36:24We've all heard the stories, and we've heard that he's one of the best finishers of the club.
- 36:28Yes, but that is different from being able to actually run the line and hold the ball up and bring people into play.
- 36:35Tierno Barry runs his arse off, and he doesn't stop.
- 36:38The boy covers a lot of distance, and he's brave.
- 36:41He puts himself about.
- 36:47The pallbearers are going to be bringing Tiano Barry out if he keeps going.
- 36:50Like the pallbearers.
- 36:51Because of how hard he's working.
- 36:53They're going to be bringing him out, mate, in January because he's going to have played every second of every game and he's ran his balls off and made up for him.
- 37:01Remember, he's still young, though.
- 37:02I mean, we used to be able to get through a lot of time.
- 37:05I mean, we're hoping he doesn't get overly kicked, which he did last night.
- 37:08You've got these fuckers with the iPads.
- 37:09I was claiming, oh, he's ran a lot of minutes.
- 37:12I don't know, I take no notice of them.
- 37:13I know, but the fuckers are with these iPads in the going, oh, listen, we've got to be careful now.
- 37:17He's on management.
- 37:18They're saying it to kids.
- 37:20That's embarrassing.
- 37:21I know, but... Tieno's young enough that he can play a hell of a lot of minutes.
- 37:24Harrison Armstrong's playing a hell of a lot of minutes.
- 37:26But he is going to get tired, is he, Oz?
- 37:28Is he not going to get tired?
- 37:29And what are we going to do because he's the only one?
- 37:31Now, this is a problem because we've got one forward.
- 37:34Oz, he's got to get tired at some point.
- 37:35Well, he might get to January and bring another one in.
- 37:37No, hopefully he gets help.
- 37:39And I can't praise him enough.
- 37:40I would expect that.
- 37:41I would expect us just to need to get to it.
- 37:43He worked his bollocks off.
- 37:44But Oz, what are we going to do when he is tied?
- 37:45And if we do throw Keno up there...
- 37:48It's what you saw last... No, it's what you...
- 37:50We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
- 37:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:53At the minute, we've got Johnson that can do a different kind of striker role.
- 37:57He'll run the channels rather than... Because he does some clever runs.
- 38:00Clever.
- 38:02But he's not really going to hold the ball up for you.
- 38:05But we just need to make sure we're scoring from some place consistently.
- 38:09And the good thing about Tierno at the minute...
- 38:12is he had that chance in the first half, which was a really good chance.
- 38:16And his technique is wrong in terms of going for it because the ball's too high for him to hit it like it's a straight volley.
- 38:23If he felt he...
- 38:25Ideally, he'd feel like he's got more time for it to come down onto his left foot, so he's hitting a normal left foot strike.
- 38:31But if he felt he's under pressure, he literally had to...
- 38:35lean over to his right, feel the contact, use the contact, lean him away and do like a sidewinder left foot.
- 38:42And that way it's like a side one where, because if you're going to hit it that high, you have to get your knee and your hip up.
- 38:48Certainly to get to a certain level to hit the swing properly, whereas he's trying to sort of hit it straight, but also somehow hit across it at the same time.
- 38:59It's near impossible to do.
- 39:00He just had...
- 39:01Asked, I think, what would you have done?
- 39:03You have to lean across it and use the defender as sort of leverage to keep you up as you're making the space to get your leg and your hip up.
- 39:13But the good thing about him is he doesn't seem bothered when he misses his chance.
- 39:18And I say that in a positive way.
- 39:20But that's because what we touched upon earlier on, there's no, Beto's not sitting there waiting to come on.
- 39:25Yeah.
- 39:26And I think it's a good thing.
- 39:29I still go on about it.
- 39:30I think as a striker, confidence is the biggest thing a striker can have.
- 39:35I just think it's the most important factor because if you're not the best player and you're technically not great or you're making mistakes or you're missing chances, the confidence of you, like if he's confident there, it's like the one the game before where he tries to do it.
- 39:47What he tried was so hard, but if he's confident, he's just going to be a mankeeper.
- 39:52I don't think the likes of your Thiago's and I don't think the likes of your Mateta's are any better than Tierno, Barry and Beto.
- 40:00I just don't.
- 40:01I just think they're more confident.
- 40:02That's my opinion and what I think.
- 40:04I think a confident striker will take an extra touch.
- 40:07They've got a little bit more experience.
- 40:09I think they've got a little bit more know-how.
- 40:11A lot of people have not given up on Tierno, Barry, but...
- 40:15I've had conversations with some ex-Everton players who aren't convinced he's going to be a solution for us.
- 40:24And I think if we're going to move further to the league, I think we need to bring in players, the strikers that are better than him.
- 40:30But I do still think he's improving.
- 40:32No, he is.
- 40:33He is improving.
- 40:34Listen, he's scoring goals.
- 40:35I don't care.
- 40:36I don't care if that happens.
- 40:37They go in off his hands.
- 40:38I don't care if they go in off his hands.
- 40:40You were critical of his celebration before.
- 40:42Yeah.
- 40:43Which I want, but I want to talk first.
- 40:45Thanks, man.
- 40:46you were you were Oz it was two yards I don't care he's just jealous because he can't flush I don't care dance as much as you score dance as much as you want you were saying he shouldn't he shouldn't be dancing like that if he's only scored the tapping from two yards I'm saying score from anywhere you want and celebrate however you want I want to see as many dancers as I can me six year olds tapping that in
- 41:07It doesn't matter.
- 41:08It doesn't matter.
- 41:09He gets into the position.
- 41:10And the reason he got into the position was because he was quick to react.
- 41:14He got his body across the guy who was marking him, sure.
- 41:18And he also, without fouling him, although we all held our breath for a minute, the way the referee stopped the game.
- 41:26So basically, he gets on the right side of Cher, Cher starts to try and wrestle with him, he just sticks his arm out, protects his space, he does sort of brush Cher in the face, who then goes down as if like, I've been elbowed full in the face.
- 41:44We just thought, from our perspective looking up in the Gods as you are, you're watching Sub-Yuti awkward times.
- 41:50It looked like it fell to him, tapping him from a yard out.
- 41:53No, he's literally, he's coming deep.
- 41:54He's got in between centre-halves.
- 41:55He's got his body into a great position.
- 41:57To the point, Scherr is, it's poor defending from him.
- 42:03Great striker play, but poor from Scherr.
- 42:04And once he's in the wrong position and realises, I can't get back at him now, he basically tries to buy the foul.
- 42:10And he does get touched to the face, but it's not a foul.
- 42:12Scherr's trying to grab him as much as he's trying to grab him.
- 42:15Ah, OK, so that's why he never got the foul, because Scherr's trying to grab him.
- 42:17as well as but it wasn't a foul and he was looking that way and just protecting his space so when that ball then ricochets who's there?
- 42:25He is because he's done the work before Listen I was trying to do the dance in the stadium I was trying to cock it As who right deserves to be able to celebrate with the dance because he did the tapping was the easy part still wasn't convinced until it went in the back of the net but the tapping was the easy part but he did the hard work before and it was actually a really good move good short pass because it was central and it was a good move
- 42:47Keenan actually picks...
- 42:49The run from Tariq was class.
- 42:52In terms of they got it so wrong, their right-back leaves the right-back slot to go into Keenan and... Was it Alanga just fell asleep?
- 43:02George realised...
- 43:03Great running behind.
- 43:03He's like centimetres onside.
- 43:05Ball goes in.
- 43:06Barry's centimetres onside.
- 43:09He got caught off a number of times last night and you're just like, as fans were going, like, come on, just a bit.
- 43:15Well, Jay Moyes' interview after the game and he went, you know, I thought Terry George should have maybe scored himself for Ferb to keep me on.
- 43:21And then,
- 43:22I thought it was going in, which I actually don't think it was going to go in.
- 43:25I think a defender would have gone back.
- 43:26I thought it was going in, Moyes' quote.
- 43:29And then Cieno, when I kicked it in, I was thinking, oh no.
- 43:32He's probably outside.
- 43:35But thankfully he wasn't.
- 43:37I was like, wow, that was harsh.
- 43:40Because one, it needed kicking in.
- 43:41And two, he got himself into the game.
- 43:43We are behind them.
- 43:44But as Evertonians, listen, I must say that the gaffer has already said that.
- 43:48He said he's an Evertonian.
- 43:50As Evertonians, we are a bit harsh at times, but you've got to understand the standard we hold players to.
- 43:55This is Everton Football Club.
- 43:57But that brings me back to the conversation we had at the start about expectations and expectancies, and I'm not blaming it because I'm now on this side, throwing elbows at people.
- 44:07With Everton Football Club, I'm sorry, lads, but...
- 44:10Yeah, this is the standard.
- 44:12This is a team we've won the league nine times.
- 44:14This is a team we've won five FA Cups.
- 44:16This is one of the big six, one of the big fans of the Premier League.
- 44:19So you've got to understand that we are demanding as fans, but we're right behind us.
- 44:25All of us Evertonians and as fans are, and now you're like that.
- 44:28You could see that again last night.
- 44:30I mean, what in a way following.
- 44:31We've always got an absolutely amazing following.
- 44:34Seeing the videos from there, seeing the crowd shots just from the TV, speaking to Deacon about how loud it was and how much fun he had and yourselves about the reaction.
- 44:45We are... We don't need to say.
- 44:49We know we're a top-class fan base.
- 44:51We want more days and nights like that.
- 44:54We want to get to a point where we are...
- 44:58back to competing for league titles long term but we have to win a little bit of silverware first we have to make some steps we have to progress there at the minute this isn't a team that can win the league so no as much as we expect take and our expectations and our standards are here and we need to be we need to you know get back to doing that it's unrealistic to expect that our team can go and win so many games of the season and finish second at the minute we have to we have to know we are and i do think we're
- 45:25I do still think we're progressing well.
- 45:26It is this.
- 45:27We beat Coventry on Friday, which again, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
- 45:30But we're fourth.
- 45:31Here's a question, boy.
- 45:32Is this a team that's better than the West Ham team that got into Europe and won a Sophie?
- 45:39Oof, they had some players.
- 45:40I don't get it.
- 45:41Barr and Jared Bowen playing up front.
- 45:44And Declan Rice.
- 45:45And Declan Rice.
- 45:46I know Declan would make a team better.
- 45:49Declan Rice.
- 45:50He really would.
- 45:51But our midfield isn't exactly off the pace.
- 45:54Our strongest point.
- 45:55I think our back line was better than us.
- 45:57Because our midfield is good.
- 45:58I think our back line is, well, a two centre-half, definitely.
- 46:00We're working on the full-back.
- 46:02If we get that,
- 46:02Likalenko, by the way, he's been brilliant.
- 46:04He's been great.
- 46:05My goal was fantastic.
- 46:06And again last night, up against the Langer's pace, Langer never had a kick.
- 46:09Made the elder Langer off, put him in his place, stay in your box, you.
- 46:13Just go over there, do as you're told.
- 46:14He was brilliant.
- 46:15But you compare our team with the team that was in Europe and won David Moyes' trophy and finished in the top 10 of the league quite comfortably, finishing in the European places for West Ham.
- 46:24Yeah.
- 46:24And I believe...
- 46:26You just give this manager backing, and he's got it in him to do what he's done at West Ham.
- 46:30Because you've got to look at it right now.
- 46:32We're off at the top of our heads, and I don't know all of the West Ham team, but I've just named the two big players.
- 46:36And their two big players were Jared Bone and Declan Rice in that team that wins a trophy.
- 46:40But I guarantee you, our back four is better than their back four.
- 46:43Well,
- 46:44The keeper's better.
- 46:45I don't care who was in goal.
- 46:46The keeper's better.
- 46:47The centre-ars, Tarkowski and Jared Brandweiss.
- 46:50I don't care who they were for West Ham.
- 46:52Them two are better than theirs.
- 46:53I'm not quite sure on the right-back and left-back, so I'm not going to comment.
- 46:56In the central midfield, OK, I give Declan my license getting into that team that we've got now.
- 47:01But ultimately, in the position that you're asking them to play...
- 47:04and Keenan Dewsbury is playing central midfield for West Ham where he's starting he is that good of a player he really is on the right the way Millen roleplay I think he was brilliant and you know what another one you find a place for Harrison Armstrong in a West Ham team because the boy club is so much grand I was just about to say
- 47:22the trajectory that young Harrison's on, he could be, he could take a Declan Rice role, you know what I mean?
- 47:30Slightly different players.
- 47:32But his influence on this team is growing game to game.
- 47:35The distance he covered last night.
- 47:36And I was saying, again, watching it, because I get criticised by family and friends, because I'm like a commentator watching it.
- 47:43I can't sort of, the way I sort of feel like I'm in the game and I'm watching it.
- 47:49And I turned to people and watching and go, did you see that?
- 47:51Because I feel like I'm doing all of that.
- 47:54I was gutted for him last night.
- 47:55But Harrison Armstrong, we'll come to that tackle actually in a sec, but Harrison Armstrong has the ability to cover distance, get to people, and he's got such long legs that even once he gets to people, he can actually still nick the ball.
- 48:07He can get a foot in.
- 48:09He can disrupt what you're doing.
- 48:10Do you know what?
- 48:11I was gutted because...
- 48:13It was in my head and I was watching him last night in the stadium and he was brilliant.
- 48:17He ran every day and everything.
- 48:18We had a chance right on half-time.
- 48:20I was thinking about you and I thought, it's going to come.
- 48:24I promise you, once he gets one goal, he'll get a few, but that was a big chance.
- 48:28And we were as fans thinking, oh, lad, that goes.
- 48:31These go in and after.
- 48:32And these are going to capitulate.
- 48:33I had the feeling if we score, well, if we score first, this crowd will turn on these.
- 48:38And what you're saying is so right is...
- 48:40you could feel the tension of them and the nervousness.
- 48:42It was last week I said it, wasn't it?
- 48:44That he has looked like a top player, but he needs to have goals to his game.
- 48:49Is that a bit of a look-hose?
- 48:50Because he hits the ball and it's not a clean strike.
- 48:52It's a hard chance, by the way.
- 48:53It's a poor finish.
- 48:54It's coming across him.
- 48:55So is it something he's capable of doing?
- 48:59Yes.
- 48:59As you talked earlier before about momentum for a striker, if Harrison gets one, he'll probably go on and get three or four.
- 49:05But until you get that first one, things are hard.
- 49:08As that ball comes in,
- 49:11The angle it comes back to, I think that's an easier left foot whipped finish rather than opening your body up.
- 49:19To hit the far post coming in from that angle is tough.
- 49:22What no one spoke about, which I would have done, because I trusted my touch, I'd have took a touch with my right foot and then smashed it with my left foot.
- 49:30Okay.
- 49:30All within one sort of... One move.
- 49:32Yeah.
- 49:33A lot of people would have took it with their right and then tried to bend it, but I would not have took it... Is that experience or was...?
- 49:38Within a step and a half, I'd have then... Was you doing that in your first year in the first team?
- 49:42Yes.
- 49:42Was you trying that?
- 49:43Yeah, because that was my strength.
- 49:45That was my technique.
- 49:46So the things he's... His strengths are...
- 49:49he's doing straight away.
- 49:51Scoring goals in those moments aren't his strength, so he'll pick them up as you go along.
- 49:57He'll get into that situation again, and maybe he'll learn from it this time, or maybe he'll try and aim to the front post, or maybe he'll hit it with his left foot.
- 50:06Maybe he might kill him, bang with the left foot.
- 50:08Things that are not as natural for you.
- 50:12You'll learn through progression and being in that situation.
- 50:14When does that confidence and when does that experience level sink in with him?
- 50:18Is it another whole season?
- 50:20Is it 10 more games?
- 50:20Well, that is the ultimate question, because how quickly it sinks in will kind of determine what level he can get to.
- 50:29But he's playing in the premiership, us.
- 50:32Yeah, but if it takes three seasons for him to sink in, to be fair, it'd still only be like 22.
- 50:36This episode of Outside the Box is sponsored by Bellarm and Joints and Solicitor's.
- 50:41We're delighted to bring on BLJ as our first ever sponsors of the podcast.
- 50:45And especially with some of the opinions that Ozzy and Tony come up with, it probably seems sensible to bring a legal partner on board first.
- 50:50For more than 200 years, Bell, Lamb and Joinson have been helping people across Liverpool for all of their life decisions.
- 50:56Whether it's expert family law, conveyancing, wills and probates, or sorting disputes, their team is there when it matters most.
- 51:03A lot has changed since 1821, but their commitment to helping people has never waned.

- 51:16How old were you when you started?
- 51:17Because you were a goal scorer in midfield.
- 51:20When was that first year that you felt, oh, I'm actually getting on the score sheet quite regularly here?
- 51:24In the first year?
- 51:27I think I scored five or six in my first season.
- 51:31So I was expected kind of to get on the score sheet.
- 51:35I was probably upset that I didn't get ten goals a season consistently.
- 51:38That's hard, that was for the midfielder.
- 51:41But as well, I didn't actually break through.
- 51:43You was never put as a ten, was you?
- 51:44You was a midfielder.
- 51:45Occasionally I was.
- 51:47In certain moments, I described it as when...
- 51:50All of our players had left and we had Phil Neville and Johnny I think a centre mid.
- 51:54That's when I got to play number 10.
- 51:56I scored a few goals in that moment.
- 51:58But otherwise, I was shuffled around in different positions.
- 52:02But yeah, I was injured one night until I was 21, really.
- 52:06And then it took me till 22 to kind of make me, in fact, late 21, 22, playing for Derby in 2020.
- 52:13to stroke 23 getting in the team harrison's still 19. he's still doing still doing his developing that's why i think he's still doing his developing in front of us but i'm saying if he because he's in the team now if he picks this up before the end of the season and gets let's just say let's it takes him to february and
- 52:32Between February and the end of the season, he gets four goals.
- 52:35And I'm going, this kid's got it, and the sky's the limit.
- 52:38But if it takes him three seasons and he learns to get a couple and then he forgets and then he learns, then there'll be a limit on where he gets it.
- 52:46Does his role, does his role.
- 52:47Because football intelligence determines as much as your attributes and all of this, if you've got football intelligence and you can pick things up quickly and learn quickly, the sky's the limit.
- 52:56It's quite clear now the manager trusts him.
- 52:59Yeah, it's quite clear.
- 53:00And I think that's a big... A manager, when a young player comes into football and they're like, why aren't I getting a chance?
- 53:06Well, the manager gives you 10 minutes.
- 53:08And if you impress him with 20, the next time he gives you 20.
- 53:11And then if you just shiver 20, he gives you half an hour.
- 53:13And then before you know it, he'll give you a full second half, and then you start.
- 53:16And I think it's in them starts where he goes, I trust you enough now.
- 53:19You're not going to mess up.
- 53:19You're not going to do this.
- 53:20And he's at the stage where I trust you, go and play a whole game.
- 53:23But that's when does your role change as a player?
- 53:26And then you get the benefit of the doubt for having a bad pass or a bad this.
- 53:30And then you get not excused, but the manager, it takes a long time to earn.
- 53:35Does it?
- 53:36But then once you've got it...
- 53:38You get given, not leeway, but you're allowed to make a few mistakes because you've got this body of work behind you.
- 53:46So kind of moving to Thursday, Hayden Hackney came in and I thought he did a lot well, played forward well, scored his goal, gave a couple of cheap passes away and a couple of cheap free kicks.
- 53:57He's brave, isn't he?
- 53:58But I still like what I'm seeing and I still like the potential of where he can go and yet...
- 54:03Moise was quite critical of him after the game.
- 54:06Was he?
- 54:06Yeah, he said, they were like, oh, please, he said something like, still got a lot to learn.
- 54:11He still needs to do this better.
- 54:13I need him to do this better.
- 54:14But he trusts him because he's putting him on.
- 54:16Putting him on because he's signed him from Middlesbrough and he knows he's got this certain, I'll call it, body of work behind him in terms of
- 54:24I know what you can do, but for me, you now need to learn this and that.
- 54:29Don't lose the ball in these positions, and don't try and do your skills in or off, do it in there.
- 54:34Basically, all the little details, and Moisey, the lad scored and got an assist, and typical Moisey used to do it to me plenty all the time, and go, how well did he play?
- 54:46And he went, yeah, I've still got loads to learn.
- 54:49you know when he just gone through to the quarter part of the club golden and assist couldn't even get a pat on the back is he is he having a little whispering in your ear in private saying you've done brilliant there did he have us do that to you
- 55:02Can you remember the time?
- 55:03You got me thinking.
- 55:08Maybe once or twice, but the majority, I mean, I must have said this at some point before.
- 55:12It was a tough task.
- 55:13I can't remember it, but it was definitely a Goodison.
- 55:17And I might have scored and got an assist or played really well.
- 55:20And I got mad at the mat and all the lads were like, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
- 55:24What a game.
- 55:25Did I ever score two at Goodison?
- 55:28I think I did.
- 55:28But anyway, Moisey came, and after the game, I went, missed a big chance there, didn't you?
- 55:35That's ruthless, that.
- 55:36Missed a big chance there today.
- 55:39He's like, you should have had the hat trick, and I was like, I did.
- 55:43He was like, well, something to work on.
- 55:45And I was like, all right.
- 55:47That's brilliant, that.
- 55:48Brilliant.
- 55:49Oh, what a guy.
- 55:51Depending on the character you are, it makes you realise that there's still a lot to work on.
- 55:56Do you ever remember him?
- 55:57See, I just think he's such a brilliant... Do you remember him putting his arm around any of you or any other players when you were looking?
- 56:03Not what I saw him do with Keenan last night.
- 56:05That was brilliant, by the way, to see that big hug and embrace and the feeling that he's got within the squad.
- 56:12I don't remember that.
- 56:13No.
- 56:14I'm still walking around like this every time I see him.
- 56:18So it shows he's evolving as a manager.
- 56:19So you've never seen him do that with your ads?
- 56:22You probably are too with this new generation.
- 56:24No, that's what I'm saying.
- 56:25He's evolving as a manager.
- 56:26He's showing that.
- 56:27Certainly not on a regular basis.
- 56:30I don't remember him.
- 56:30Because I hear dickheads in the crowd.
- 56:33I don't remember it.
- 56:33I'm in the crowd last night and you put dickheads on.
- 56:36You're dying to throw.
- 56:37Get him off.
- 56:37And I'm going, listen, lad.
- 56:39You're winning.
- 56:40And I'm looking at fans and going, what are you shouting things like that?
- 56:42We're winning.
- 56:43And what are you going?
- 56:44And then a couple of fans stopped me and said to me, hey, you can't be building a statue if he wins a trophy.
- 56:48And I went, listen, mate.
- 56:49And they were giving me bad stick.
- 56:51And they went, why are you like that?
- 56:52And I said, listen, lads, I'm not being funny.
- 56:54If he wins a trophy, lad.
- 56:57Name the ground after him.
- 56:59You don't understand what I've done to my kids.
- 57:01It's been 32 years, you Muppets.
- 57:04And we're all laughing and joking and love it.
- 57:05But I just think he epitomises Everton Football Club.
- 57:10And what Ozzy's saying there, it proves that I'm right what I'm saying.
- 57:14He's saying, yeah, he doesn't remember him.
- 57:17Seating players like that and giving someone a big hug.
- 57:19It shows he's evolving and it shows he's not in the behind time because years ago he'd be screaming and shouting and stuff like that.
- 57:27He's changing and that shows he's still a student of the game.
- 57:30He's not one of these managers or he's not one of these fellows who goes, stuck in my ways.
- 57:34Like, you know, there's managers out there who go, this is the way I'm doing it.
- 57:37I'm not changing.
- 57:38It's me or you.
- 57:39And that's how I felt like that.
- 57:40Ruben Ammonen was like that.
- 57:41And that's just for a stupid fan from the outside looking in.
- 57:44He's doing really well now.
- 57:45No, he is.
- 57:45But if someone comes in and goes, listen, I played three at the back, you conform to what I say.
- 57:50Yeah.
- 57:50My words, I don't believe any manager should be like that because no one man, and I can only say this on my sport, no one person knows it all.
- 57:58There's not a single coach who knows everything.
- 58:00Every coach adds a little something different.
- 58:02And that's just life.
- 58:03And I think for David Moyes,
- 58:05he is changing.
- 58:06He has changed his ways of managing or he has changed his philosophy or whatever because, and what else he's just said to you, it shows you that he has.
- 58:13Because if he's walking on there and in 15 years or 10, 12 years of managing us, he'd never seen once give up on the last hook and be so happy.
- 58:23Do you know what he does need or someone needs to give him for him to it?
- 58:26A brush.
- 58:27Have you seen his hair on the side of the pitch?
- 58:29Have you seen his hair?
- 58:32Like, he just looks like he's just been a windswept every time he comes off the bench.
- 58:37It just popped in me.
- 58:38Do you know what?
- 58:39As I said, I just think as fans, sometimes we are harsh and critical.
- 58:44But like I said last night...
- 58:46I just thought they were brilliant.
- 58:47Like when Oz, do you know when some of them were saying it, make some change, make some change.
- 58:52If you're a player, he's proper still giddy from last night.
- 58:54You know when you go away and you see a great, and we're all feeling it, but when you're in Statham, he's bouncing today.
- 58:59He's not amazing all the way.
- 59:00He's bouncing today.
- 59:01I bet all the Evertonians that, you've got to understand.
- 59:03I certainly went the game feel like it, but all of us feel like it.
- 59:06But you're home.
- 59:06You're bouncing.
- 59:07Half two this morning, and I bounced in here.
- 59:10The freshest you've ever looked.
- 59:11I tend to mind.
- 59:11The freshest of days, you just know what Evan can do to me l
- 59:14This is what football does to you.
- 59:15But you'd have been miserable as hell if we lost it.
- 59:18Oh, yeah.
- 59:18Wouldn't have come in.
- 59:19No, I wouldn't have gone out of bed.
- 59:21Honestly, I wouldn't have gone out of bed.
- 59:22But when you just think about it like that, it's what football can do to you.
- 59:27This is what football does.
- 59:28I do want to ask on the Murray's thing, where you're saying he's changing how he deals with players, I think it's probably important to bring up.
- 59:34How do you think he's dealing with the Jack Grealish situation?
- 59:36Oh, that's a tough one.
- 59:39Best he can.
- 59:40Because...
- 59:43Everybody wants players to be available.
- 59:45Everyone wants players to follow the rules.
- 59:50We're not entirely publicly privy to what's... What's actually happened.
- 59:55What's actually happened.
- 59:56There are rumours, which I'm not prepared to say either way because there are rumours at the minute.
- 1:00:02Yeah.
- 1:00:03and the club aren't releasing what said rumours are meant to be.
- 1:00:09But he seems like he's messed up.
- 1:00:11And if he has messed up, then the club have to act like he's messed up.
- 1:00:16They can't, regardless of any reasons, they can't, there has to be, the club have to react in that way.
- 1:00:24And at the minute, the simplest thing is for him not to be in the squad, right?
- 1:00:29So I think the club's seen at this moment without anything being confirmed, like they're acting responsibly probably or correctly.
- 1:00:39Being very kind, in my opinion.
- 1:00:41Being very kind.
- 1:00:42He's got to come out.
- 1:00:43He's got to come out.
- 1:00:44He's got to come out.
- 1:00:45Okay, I don't know what he's done.
- 1:00:47I don't know the ins and outs.
- 1:00:49You hear whispers and you hear the stories, which I'm not going to start giving it anyway.
- 1:00:52Come out, lad, and say something.
- 1:00:54come out and say something to the fans that's on him because let me say David Moyes hasn't thrown him under the bus and he quite easily could have his manager could have thrown him under the bus and let's be honest
- 1:01:10I don't know the ins and outs, I don't know what's happened, but as a fan base, we're all missing him, and we all absolutely adore Jack Grealish, but you've got to come out, lad, and say, listen, I've messed up.
- 1:01:20I hope he knows that, that we do love him and we want to see him back on the pitch.
- 1:01:25Of course we all love him, and I hope he does know that, and if he hears this and listens to it, Everton fans adore you, lad.
- 1:01:31You are one of us.
- 1:01:32We adore you, but...
- 1:01:34you've got to come out and say, listen, I've messed up or I've made a mistake or whatever.
- 1:01:37Or you might think you were right or wrong.
- 1:01:39Ultimately, we don't know.
- 1:01:40You want the information to know how to react.
- 1:01:43But the club aren't throwing them under the bus.
- 1:01:44That's big, isn't it?
- 1:01:45It's not a manager.
- 1:01:47So relating this back onto the pitch,
- 1:01:51it's bad timing from him to go through this, for whatever's happening, regardless of the truth.
- 1:02:01It's bad timing for him because he'd got himself into the first team and now he's opened the door for Tariq George to get back in and show exactly what he was at the start of the season.
- 1:02:11He doesn't walk back into the start of the season.
- 1:02:13Exactly, Tariq started the season pretty well.
- 1:02:15Jack came, got in the team, we all felt it was a bit harsh on Tariq George.
- 1:02:21The window door has now opened, and Tariq George has jumped through it again.
- 1:02:25So on the pitch, brilliant from him, because that's what you've got to do in football.
- 1:02:30When chances come your way, you've got to show I'm ready, I'm there, I'm capable.
- 1:02:33Poor timing for this to have happened to Jack on the pitch terms, because he's now, as you said, we're not sitting here going, we need him back, he's got to jump into the team, because actually...
- 1:02:45Other people have stepped up and made performances.
- 1:02:49And we're not thrown on the bus.
- 1:02:51And like I said, Everton fans love you, lad.
- 1:02:52But as for you as a player, have you seen this happen before?
- 1:02:55So what we do know is he's missed a training session.
- 1:02:57That's what's come out, hasn't it?
- 1:02:58You've missed a training session.
- 1:02:59You haven't turned up for whatever reason.
- 1:03:01Hopefully he addresses it and comes out and goes, this is the situation.
- 1:03:03I'm sorry.
- 1:03:04Won't happen again.
- 1:03:05And we move on.
- 1:03:07we can all forgive that.
- 1:03:08Scousers, whatever, and fans, like I told you.
- 1:03:10People make mistakes as long as you don't mind.
- 1:03:12No one's perfect.
- 1:03:14The word perfect shouldn't even exist.
- 1:03:15I don't even know who created that word, but it doesn't exist in any walk of life, in any job, in anything.
- 1:03:20The word perfect does not exist.
- 1:03:21Nobody's perfect, nothing's perfect.
- 1:03:24Have you seen players do it in your career?
- 1:03:26Have you seen a player miss training?
- 1:03:28Because the manager, I think, and the actual club have handled this brilliantly.
- 1:03:33They've protected them.
- 1:03:35Yeah, I'd say so.
- 1:03:36They've protected them because they could have quite easily come out here and gone, this is what he's done, that's what he's done.
- 1:03:41We're not having this, go on.
- 1:03:43And they haven't.
- 1:03:44So everyone's looking out for them.
- 1:03:45Yeah.
- 1:03:46Have you seen a player, has this happened before?
- 1:03:48I'm sure I have.
- 1:03:49I have.
- 1:03:49you must have when you look back think about who's mistraining at Anne do you want me to go through every day no but go on it must have happened it must have happened someone's mistraining and you know they've missed it for the wrong reasons because it's not like he's mistraining he's got the flu obviously we're all not stupid here he's mistraining I'm not trying to over that I'm just trying Oz have you known a player who's mistraining because of a certainty let's just say have you seen a player mistraining because of a night out
- 1:04:19or a piss-up?
- 1:04:20Have you ever seen that?
- 1:04:21Well, allegedly.
- 1:04:23Have you?
- 1:04:24He doesn't want to throw anyone under the bus.
- 1:04:25No.
- 1:04:27Have you seen that happen?
- 1:04:28I don't know.
- 1:04:29Royce do.
- 1:04:29And if Stey's main, it pops to mind.
- 1:04:31What happened to him?
- 1:04:33Then you're out of the squad.
- 1:04:34I know.
- 1:04:35The first time he got protected, didn't he?
- 1:04:37Yeah.
- 1:04:38I think, if I'm remembering correctly, he missed out on the FA Cup 7-500.
- 1:04:42He did over the back of it, didn't he?
- 1:04:44Yeah, he did.
- 1:04:45But that was right.
- 1:04:45Despite of his...
- 1:04:48If you remember correctly, that wasn't his first time.
- 1:04:50That was his second time.
- 1:04:51And he got thrown under the bus the second time.
- 1:04:53Yeah.
- 1:04:53The first time he didn't, the first time he got protected.
- 1:04:55Yeah.
- 1:04:56Yeah, and again, if people fall fouls of clubs, like some people say, well, you've got special cases for top players.
- 1:05:05You shouldn't.
- 1:05:05You should never have special cases.
- 1:05:07The elastic band gets a little bit looser, shall we say, or stretchier, but it should never snap.
- 1:05:13The rules should never be broken to the point you can protect people.
- 1:05:18But again, until it officially comes out, I don't know whether I'm angry or upset or feel sorry for him.
- 1:05:25I don't know where I... Yeah, you can't really comment.
- 1:05:27And you've also got to be delicate because you don't actually know the true story.
- 1:05:29I'm being delicate because you don't know exactly what's happened.
- 1:05:32Despite us hearing rumours, I don't know exactly what's happened.
- 1:05:36So I find it hard to... You're touching on the Rooster and Gentleman.
- 1:05:38You've experienced it.
- 1:05:39Have to respond...
- 1:05:41in every single way, whether they are angry or helping him or being disciplined or that, they seem to be doing right.
- 1:05:49The club and the manager have done brilliance.
- 1:05:52The club officials, the higher key of the club, they're handling it brilliance.
- 1:05:56Like I said, for me personally, as a fan, players got to come out and say something, but for you as a player when Royston done it, like I said, there was a couple of occasions.
- 1:06:04So the first one, he hasn't been to one, and no one found out after the first one.
- 1:06:08But the second one... Because everyone can make a mistake.
- 1:06:10Yeah, but the second one, it's too much in it.
- 1:06:13If you're repeating mistakes at this level, in this job, then, yeah.
- 1:06:20Over the years, how many players have you seen do that and get away with it?
- 1:06:22I can't remember, so it took me ages just to remember that.
- 1:06:24We used to have done it.
- 1:06:26Fucking hell.
- 1:06:27You think you're punchy, I'm punchy, me, you know.
- 1:06:32But I just think, like I said, I just think, do you know what?
- 1:06:37It's quite clear the club and the manager have protected Jack.
- 1:06:41And I always think, right, culpability.
- 1:06:44Don't ever look at anyone else.
- 1:06:46Don't blame anyone.
- 1:06:47Look at yourself in the mirror.
- 1:06:48Come out, be a big man and go, listen, fucked up here.
- 1:06:51yeah i'm sorry and we'll accept we'll accept of course we will you know and i don't want to go down saying don't use certain things together just come out and own it and and everyone will look at you in a far better light and just go look at that lad you know what you're spot on because none of us are perfect but i've missed i've missed work days i used to work in next i remember falling up and not going in i was scheduled going after boxing day i knew full well i weren't going in because i've been on the heirloom boxing day yeah i knew full well
- 1:07:18I'm just going to do what it is.
- 1:07:19I'm only.
- 1:07:20Forget it.
- 1:07:21I don't know what I can do.
- 1:07:22And if everyone out there, well, 99% of people out there, especially the fellas, will have all gone fair play, lad.
- 1:07:28Yeah, I wouldn't have went if I drank the amount you drank on Boxing Day as well.
- 1:07:31And then the other 1% is probably me wife and me beer going, should I have been in work?
- 1:07:37So we can all be late.
- 1:07:40And I don't know the situation, what's going on with Jack or whatever.
- 1:07:42I'm just trying to look at it from a...
- 1:07:45From an outsider looking in.
- 1:07:47Yeah.
- 1:07:48He's a human at the end of the day.
- 1:07:50100%.
- 1:07:50No one's perfect, lad.
- 1:07:52And everyone's got shit going on.
- 1:07:54But I just think that's the next step for this because this is getting harped on about.
- 1:07:58And I think it's so sad that... Do you know when other footballers do it?
- 1:08:02They get absolutely torn apart and the media are all over them.
- 1:08:06Because the club have protected them and because the manager's protecting them, this hasn't really got as much into the media as it would with the other players if you just get one from them.
- 1:08:15Yeah, but ideally...
- 1:08:17I mean, you're saying for Jack to come out, ideally, you would want this to sort of... Go away.
- 1:08:23Yeah, just kind of be forgotten about and then him come back and the club deal in that way.
- 1:08:28We don't want it blowing up into a big circus because he's such a high-profile player that...
- 1:08:35But Ozzy's missed how many games and it already has blown him up because he's a player we've signed, and he's playing for us.
- 1:08:42He's a precocious... Ozzy's a world-class footballer.
- 1:08:46And on the paper...
- 1:08:47On paper, and I said to the stars of the season, Keane and Jude Bure and Tyree Georgia Massa for us this season.
- 1:08:52I put my neck on the block and it's working out all right.
- 1:08:54But on paper... You want a pat on the back?
- 1:08:56Yeah, nice one.
- 1:08:58Very much, I deserve that, people.
- 1:09:00But ultimately, right, he, on paper, and with his accolades, he's the best player in the team.
- 1:09:06It's helped that we won the last two games.
- 1:09:08I'm not saying... Yeah, it helps.
- 1:09:10You know, and someone's got to say that.
- 1:09:13Lad, you're the most influential player.
- 1:09:15On paper, you're the best player.
- 1:09:17And on paper, you know when everyone walks in, you know them younger players, Keenan Jews, they're looking up to Jack because he's won the lot.
- 1:09:25He's done everything, us.
- 1:09:27And we need you.
- 1:09:28And I know he doesn't want to be the example and I know he doesn't want to, he hasn't asked to be where he is.
- 1:09:33But ultimately, lad, you are.
- 1:09:34And we need you because we look up, these younger lads, Arison Armstrong, Tyreek George,
- 1:09:39these young boys male and role this is a man who's won the law they look up to you regardless whether you want to be looked up to or not and we need them to how how would you feel then because again i i don't know what's going to come out if this is more than and i'm going to bring you back to your mustache at the start of the show not much but the the mental issues what if this is more than that what if this is
- 1:10:04a mental issue?
- 1:10:04What if this becomes something where Jack actually needs help?
- 1:10:09I'm hoping he's getting it because you've had that long out now that I'm hoping that this is what it is.
- 1:10:13It's getting addressed.
- 1:10:15And a part of me thinks that might be what the solution is.
- 1:10:19He's been given some way to reflect and think about what's going on.
- 1:10:22And I do absolutely... Everton Football Club will be right on it from that perspective because Everton, as a football club,
- 1:10:30will be looking at things like that because Everton Football Club is a family club and they will be thinking about what, like I said before, the manager and the club have handled this brilliantly for Jack Grealish's mental health because that's what's being put paramount here.
- 1:10:45And the reason why I say that is because if Jack Grealish's mental health wasn't paramount, they'd have thrown him under the bus.
- 1:10:53They either come out and said, you've done this, this or this, because that's why it's all gone nuts and the noise is gone.
- 1:10:57There's a kindness and discipline sometimes, isn't there?
- 1:11:00Absolutely.
- 1:11:01And that's why I say it's on him to go, you know what, lads?
- 1:11:04I'm sorry.
- 1:11:05I've come out here and fucked up.
- 1:11:07I think even just the way he comes back and shows his persona on the pitch, like if he comes over and he's clapping the fans and then performs really well, that's an apology in itself and we can just crack on.
- 1:11:16You see...
- 1:11:18He knows how much we love him.
- 1:11:20And by the way, that feeling is he adores Everton.
- 1:11:22And I also think if he does need time, going back to your point, that he should just be given time.
- 1:11:26I think mental health is that priority.
- 1:11:29And if he has messed up because of stuff going on in the background... And I am all for it.
- 1:11:35And certainly, but then you've got the club's point of view if...
- 1:11:39So now you're talking about, let's just say, this player needs six weeks to get over it.
- 1:11:45He's our highest paid player.
- 1:11:46I know, but sometimes a mental injury can be worse than a physical injury.
- 1:11:50But do you get full paid wages for having six weeks off to sort yourself out?
- 1:11:55By the way, I'm not answering that.
- 1:11:57I'm just putting the question out.
- 1:11:58No, you're right.
- 1:11:59You're spot on.
- 1:12:00You're now saying, well, you're our highest paid player and you're unavailable.
- 1:12:03I think you do, personally.
- 1:12:04No, I do.
- 1:12:05I agree.
- 1:12:07From a fan's perspective, purely, I don't care about the money.
- 1:12:11I don't care.
- 1:12:11I care about where you're going.
- 1:12:13Make sure he's right.
- 1:12:13I care about your life.
- 1:12:14Do you know what I actually care about you is, how are you dealing with life after football?
- 1:12:19It's similar to life.
- 1:12:19I'm not made to Tyson Fury, but I genuinely worry about Tyson Fury and his mental health.
- 1:12:24I'm not as close as mate.
- 1:12:25I know him.
- 1:12:25I get on great with him.
- 1:12:26I think the world is a lovely fella.
- 1:12:29But I genuinely worry about people, and that might be the soft side of me or whatever, but if anyone is out there struggling like that, you've got to speak, you've got to talk, because a problem's shared, there's a problem halved.
- 1:12:39And as big industries and as big companies like Everton Football Club, and that's what, listen, we are fans, it's tribal to us, it's what we are, it's Everton, but to these big companies, they've got to be seen to be doing that and helping.
- 1:12:54And that's a big thing now, because...
- 1:12:56Mental health is just as important as physical fitness.
- 1:13:00And it's got to be addressed and it's got to be spoken about.
- 1:13:02So, like I said, I think as a club, they couldn't have handled it any better.
- 1:13:06I think they've been very good.
- 1:13:08There's none of these stupid league stories.
- 1:13:10The media don't press Jack Grealish like the presser Bakayo Saka.
- 1:13:16Or the media don't press Jacky.
- 1:13:18It's like they press...
- 1:13:20I'm trying to think.
- 1:13:21Some of the players they press over the years.
- 1:13:23Like they press the Paul Gascoigne.
- 1:13:25They don't press him like that.
- 1:13:26So, you know what I mean?
- 1:13:27We're very fortunate.
- 1:13:28But at the same time, it does now have to come to a point where you've got to be looked at and you go, if you need help, lad, come on, you've got to talk.
- 1:13:37You've got to speak to somebody.
- 1:13:38And we've now got to figure it out of what's best for Everton Football Club.
- 1:13:43And him.
- 1:13:45So figure it out, work it out and address it.
- 1:13:47Yeah, I guess we'll have to wait until more information comes out.
- 1:13:50But ultimately it doesn't match because Evan are winning.
- 1:13:52So the Blue Boys are flying and like I said, we're going into a big one.
- 1:13:58It's Friday night.
- 1:14:00Let's end on this prediction.
- 1:14:02Well, not thankfully for this.
- 1:14:03You're so positive today.
- 1:14:04I've never heard of it.
- 1:14:05It's a very rare seat, honestly.
- 1:14:07You usually come in and you're a bit, not flat, but you're...
- 1:14:10You're talking and Everett might not have won at the weekend and you're trying to battle your way through.
- 1:14:16You are literally floating in that chair today, aren't you?
- 1:14:19Life's good.
- 1:14:19Honest to God, I'm thinking about going to play golf as well now.
- 1:14:22I don't ruin your day.
- 1:14:23It might work out well.
- 1:14:25I might hit below 80 again.
- 1:14:26I might hit below 90 again.
- 1:14:28Sorry, you know what I'm saying.
- 1:14:28I'm even talking about hitting below 80.
- 1:14:30That's just impossible.
- 1:14:31That's that dream stuff.
- 1:14:32But you know what?
- 1:14:34I'm just Friday now.
- 1:14:35I'm proper.
- 1:14:36This is one of the best weeks I've had in years.
- 1:14:38Yeah.
- 1:14:39What do we reckon that's goal?
- 1:14:42I think we make changes.
- 1:14:44What's the changes you make?
- 1:14:47I put Merlin Roll right back.
- 1:14:50And I put Diblin on the right.
- 1:14:53You were spot on, by the way, when you said that in the cup.
- 1:14:56he was spot on if you remember his words he said put Tyler Dibble when we went away from home he was spot on that was the game when he had at home in the comments with you but then you kind of shut yourself in the foot because when you said he's going to play at home well I did yeah and he did and knowing he did he did but why don't we play him away where there's less pressure
- 1:15:16because it's still the environment.
- 1:15:19I know Newcastle didn't help themselves, but the environment, and you have to not give the ball away in certain moments.
- 1:15:24You have to be trustworthy.
- 1:15:25You have to not let them get attacks, which Lewis Haller mentioned before, that Merlin Roll stopped anything he did, which they start getting him up and flying at their place.
- 1:15:35Then they get momentum.
- 1:15:36Plus, what Merlin Roll does, when they did push him up, the space that he's into there, it's a race that he can actually take us on to attack.
- 1:15:46But I bring him back in for the game against Coventry.
- 1:15:50Do you think it's fair to drop Jake Holberheim?
- 1:15:53Fair, no.
- 1:15:54Do you think it's fair to drop anyone from that team last night?
- 1:15:57Fair, no.
- 1:15:58But this is a season thing where, what's the saying?
- 1:16:01Horses for courses.
- 1:16:02So if you've picked a team that is suitable to go to Newcastle and get results, that team might not be the perfect team to play a different team at home.
- 1:16:11And I've always said this.
- 1:16:12What's Coventry's stance?
- 1:16:14Um...
- 1:16:15They've played some good football through the middle.
- 1:16:19They've got a striker and a midfielder that have been scoring goals.
- 1:16:24But their three goals against Sunderland all came from Sunderland mistakes.
- 1:16:28They all came from poor positioning or bad reaction.
- 1:16:33So I would expect Touchwood, us to be able to defend properly because that's one of our things.
- 1:16:38We are one of the best well-filled teams.
- 1:16:40Decent defensively, don't do mistakes.
- 1:16:42And if we play like we did for the most part in the middle, I think we'll be fine.
- 1:16:46But you want your players like...
- 1:16:49Tyler to be able to go and scare their fullback to death.
- 1:16:53And then you want Merlin Roll coming from deep that can play fullback and give you more of a fullback's sort of attitude, delivery, rather than a centre-half playing right back who does a great job at certain moments.
- 1:17:06And maybe boys will be, not fortunate, but maybe things will fall his way that when Brantway came off the other night, he's not fit.
- 1:17:16And suddenly he doesn't have to make a decision.
- 1:17:17O'Brien comes centre-half again with Tarkovsky and Merlin Roll goes right back.
- 1:17:22You don't have a decision, mate.
- 1:17:23Maybe.
- 1:17:24The way we chased last night and ramped teams down, I mean, we were fantastic.
- 1:17:28And I like, OK, from Aussie making great points, didn't I get it?
- 1:17:32I mean, from a fan's perspective, I just think it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 1:17:36I just throw them back out you just don't know them but it ain't gone you're back on yeah I don't disagree that's to be fair but I don't know I get what and he knows more than I do so look we all have opinions that's what makes this game I know but if we see Tyler Dibblin on I understand now because you've explained to me why but I just think to myself
- 1:17:52I think you could give Tyler a go against Coventry, actually.
- 1:17:55I'd be playing him home.
- 1:17:55Coventry at home?
- 1:17:56Yeah, it's a good game for him.
- 1:17:59Go and show them why you were considered.
- 1:18:01Another little night fixture.
- 1:18:02Go on for it Friday night.
- 1:18:03Go get after them.
- 1:18:03It's a big game.
- 1:18:05Get after them.
- 1:18:05Big, big game.
- 1:18:07Big, big, huge game.
- 1:18:09This...
- 1:18:10this is a massive one.
- 1:18:12You beat these and it's no longer...
- 1:18:14If you win this game, it's no longer a great start.
- 1:18:17You're not talking about the start now anymore.
- 1:18:19It's not like this is... You're in it.
- 1:18:20You're in it now.
- 1:18:21You're in it.
- 1:18:22Because you win this game, you go and get a point somewhere else and whatever, imagine in European places.
- 1:18:26We're getting towards Christmas now, lads.
- 1:18:28Six weeks to go.
- 1:18:29Six weeks to go for Christmas fixes.
- 1:18:31Let's get through Bonfire Night first.
- 1:18:32No, I know, but you're one of them, are you?
- 1:18:35Christmas deckies out.
- 1:18:36Halloween's been put away.
- 1:18:37Christmas deckies are out.
- 1:18:38You look at it, right?
- 1:18:39You win this game, you're in international break.
- 1:18:42Before you know it, we're coming back 23rd of November, I think we're coming back after this game.
- 1:18:46Is it?
- 1:18:46Yeah.
- 1:18:47That's Christmas.
- 1:18:48Yeah, at 14 times.
- 1:18:48That's not Christmas.
- 1:18:49No, it is.
- 1:18:50That's not Christmas.
- 1:18:52Listen, mate, 23rd of November.
- 1:18:53Christmas is on the 25th of December.
- 1:18:55No, I know it is, but you're getting towards Christmas.
- 1:18:57Okay, let's play it.
- 1:18:58When's Easter start?
- 1:18:59The 1st of January.
- 1:19:00Fuck off.
- 1:19:01You don't want to mean.
- 1:19:02Okay, you get to the end of November.
- 1:19:03Is that not Christmas now?
- 1:19:05End of November, December.
- 1:19:06As a player, are you just going, lads?
- 1:19:08Fucking Christmas is coming here.
- 1:19:10Yeah, because I'm trying to find where we Christmas night out come from.
- 1:19:14How can we bring a night out of, you know?
- 1:19:18I'm trying to think, as fans anyway, I'm thinking, you win this game, we get an international break, you're going into the buzz and flying.
- 1:19:27Yeah, it's massive.
- 1:19:28And then you hit a step.
- 1:19:29Christmas is the halfway stage, that's the season.
- 1:19:32You get to Christmas and you're sixth or seventh.
- 1:19:35Mate, you're ahead of the trend.
- 1:19:36You're ahead of the, what's it called, the curve?
- 1:19:38If we get to Christmas and even January in...
- 1:19:42I'd even go as far as the top half, but definitely sixth or seventh with one striker.
- 1:19:48Us haven't got there with one striker.
- 1:19:49This is what I'm getting to.
- 1:19:50With the opportunity to maybe, you hope, strengthen.
- 1:19:55Keep going, us.
- 1:19:56Back him up in those areas.
- 1:19:57Keep going, us.
- 1:19:58Then we can look at kicking on.
- 1:19:59I mean, that's all one a year.
- 1:20:01Yeah, definitely.
- 1:20:02But...
- 1:20:03You know, Christmas doesn't start in November.
- 1:20:05No, Oss, come on, don't fire, come on.
- 1:20:07Oss, come on, just keep going.
- 1:20:08There's a lot of games between now and then, even after the international break.
- 1:20:11No, but... And we've got some tough ones, because... What's the score for the United Oss?
- 1:20:16I'm going to say 3-1.
- 1:20:21Yeah, I'm going to go 4-1.
- 1:20:22Heaven.
- 1:20:23I'm going to go 4-0.
- 1:20:24All right.
- 1:20:27Four, possibly five.
- 1:20:28I think someone's getting out on Friday night.
- 1:20:30I'm so confident.
- 1:20:315-0.
- 1:20:335-0.
- 1:20:33I've never seen him this past season.
- 1:20:35This is great, this.
- 1:20:355-0.
- 1:20:36I was thinking 3-0.
- 1:20:37I've given them a one.
- 1:20:383-1.
- 1:20:38No, no, they're not getting a goal.
- 1:20:395-0, Everton.
- 1:20:40When we play Newcastle away next year, I'll come with you.
- 1:20:42Targi's been brilliant.
- 1:20:433-0, yeah, maybe.
- 1:20:43The lads at the back have been brilliant.
- 1:20:45Michael's been brilliant.
- 1:20:46Like I said,
- 1:20:47Them lads at the back have been fantastic.
- 1:20:49Jared Brantwick was fantastic last night.
- 1:20:51Thrown his head at everything.
- 1:20:52Absolutely everything.
- 1:20:53Thrown it.
- 1:20:54So I'm telling you now, mate, we're going to give... Come to get back in the box.
- 1:20:58I hope so.
- 1:20:59Give them a good eye.
- 1:21:00Show them where they belong.
- 1:21:02No, don't start us off.
- 1:21:03And I'm sorry, Frank, but that's it.
- 1:21:05You're getting it.
- 1:21:06Everton football, you've got it.
- 1:21:07Frank's back, isn't he, yeah?
- 1:21:09Frankie Lampard.
- 1:21:11I hope he has a horrid time.
- 1:21:14What a guy.
- 1:21:15I hope he has as much success back at Everton as he did at Everton the first time.
- 1:21:20I'm going to have a low blow that was.
- 1:21:23It was.
- 1:21:23It was.
- 1:21:23I apologise because he got us out.
- 1:21:26Well done.
- 1:21:26Save us.
- 1:21:28And I like that as well.
- 1:21:29Up the toffees.
- 1:21:29Bring on Friday.
