- 0:00In our massive country, there are card collectors throughout
- 0:04the land participating in the hobby.
- 0:06There's Mike of Junk Wax Hero and Greg of Midlife Cards, and
- 0:11while distance may separate them, here is where they come
- 0:15together to talk cards. Hey buddy, how are you doing to
- 0:21my fellow top three YouTube in New England.
- 0:27Oh man. Somebody in comments last week
- 0:31said that you saying hey buddy, sounds like Pauly Shore.
- 0:36Oh, hey, buddy, Buddy. Yeah.
- 0:40It really does. I actually I actually saw Pauly
- 0:42Shore once. He almost ran over me with a
- 0:44car. Do you want a quick a Side Story
- 0:46of? Course.
- 0:48So when I was in college, my senior year, I took a semester
- 0:53off and did an internship at the Jim Henson Company, which I've
- 0:56mentioned a few times on the channel.
- 0:59And the Jim Henson Company moved from across the street from the
- 1:04Paramount lot to they bought the old Charlie Chaplin studios.
- 1:09And so we were packing them up while I was there.
- 1:13We were packing everything up for this move and on the lot
- 1:17across the street from the Paramount studios, there were
- 1:20tons of sound stages. Like there's an Eminem video
- 1:23that they recorded. One day I saw Jonathan Winters
- 1:27recording a California Eggs commercial, and this car comes
- 1:32tearing around the corner super fast in the lot, almost hits me,
- 1:36slams on their brakes. And the guy I'm like what a,
- 1:39what a you know, And he goes tearing off when I look at his
- 1:42freaking Pauly Shore guy almost killed me.
- 1:47Killed by Pauly Shore. What an exciting time.
- 1:51I almost got killed by Pauly Shore from watching Biodome.
- 1:54Yeah. All right.
- 1:58So top three New England is sort of the thing right now.
- 2:03If you're top three in the New England area at anything, that's
- 2:07a big deal, is it not? Yes, unless you're top three
- 2:12quarterback for a New England team, because then you're
- 2:15basically a nobody if you're not, Drake May.
- 2:20But. Wow.
- 2:21What do you, I mean, is Buffalo Buffalo's not considered New
- 2:24England? I guess, yeah.
- 2:25No, they're not I. Don't know how it works OK.
- 2:30Wow. I don't know where the cut off
- 2:32is. Where's the cut off?
- 2:34Maybe? An idol of this idol of this
- 2:36episode. Greg doesn't know what New
- 2:38England is. I don't what is what is New
- 2:41England. Seriously, there's seven states.
- 2:43New England. I'm gonna try.
- 2:44I'm gonna do my best here. Maine.
- 2:45New Hampshire, Vermont. Connecticut.
- 2:49Rhode Island, Massachusetts. Delaware.
- 2:56How did I do? I don't know, I I, this is, I
- 2:59mean, it's sort of like when they talk about the UK like
- 3:03Great Britain, right? What's What is Great Britain?
- 3:08Right. Britain is the UK is England.
- 3:13Oh boy. Wales has to be in.
- 3:17There, Wales, Scotland, the UK and Scotland.
- 3:22I mean, sorry, Scotland is part of the UK, but is that Great
- 3:27Britain too? I don't know.
- 3:32I mean, I'm looking it says the UK, commonly known as the United
- 3:37Kingdom or Britain, is the country of Northwestern Europe
- 3:42off the OK blah blah blah. Get to the point it looks like
- 3:48Ireland is involved. Yeah.
- 3:52I don't know. I and that's how us out here in
- 3:55California feel about New England is I think of it as a
- 3:58general area. I don't think of it as as a hard
- 4:03border. No, I don't.
- 4:09I don't know. So anyways so.
- 4:11Because as a reminder, anybody who hasn't been watching or
- 4:14hasn't have, has conveniently forgotten, I said a couple
- 4:18episodes ago that Matt from Providence is a top three dealer
- 4:21in New England. And he took offence to that and
- 4:25said that he is the number one dealer in New England.
- 4:27And last week I went back and I said, you know what, based on
- 4:29your criteria, Matt, you are the number one dealer in New
- 4:34England. And he then took victory lap on
- 4:38his episode. And remember, they are, they're
- 4:40also on this channel. They're probably like a top five
- 4:44show on this channel, which, you know, I think that's pretty
- 4:47good. It might even be top 4.
- 4:50Top four shows. Yeah.
- 4:53They, so, you know, I, I, I said great, good job Matt.
- 4:59But then this week I received a phone call.
- 5:03I received a phone call from Paul Borges, also known as PB
- 5:08Collectibles, who is somebody that Matt is dethroning.
- 5:14Matt's saying he's #1 Paul Borges #2 So Paul Borges gave me
- 5:19a call and said he really appreciates Matt.
- 5:24He loves the show. He was very, very nice, very,
- 5:27very complimentary of Matt and Jake.
- 5:30He talked. He said that they're historians
- 5:33and he loves what they do They're better.
- 5:35I think he thinks that they're better than us, which is
- 5:37amazing. I love hearing that.
- 5:41But then he said if you need to tell people you're #1 you're not
- 5:47really one. Oh wow.
- 5:50Wow. We might need to circle back
- 5:54because when I think of Matt from Providence historian is not
- 5:57one of the terms that immediately pops into my mind.
- 6:00But I I really like Matt from Providence.
- 6:05I love Jake and I really like Matt from Providence.
- 6:10I'm not really planning on getting in the middle of this,
- 6:13this nonsense that you guys have had, you know, launching Scuds
- 6:17at each other back and forth, but it is quite entertaining.
- 6:21Paul Borges is is a top notch dealer.
- 6:25I don't know if I've ever talked to Paul Borges.
- 6:29Top top two or three nicest guys in New England?
- 6:33Top two or three, I'm number one.
- 6:34Top two or three, Yeah, for sure.
- 6:36Me. Then Jake, then Paul.
- 6:39OK, so Jake is above Paul though.
- 6:42Yeah. OK, what about in California?
- 6:46Am IA top three person in California?
- 6:50What's the preteached person? Yes, you are a top three person
- 6:53in California. We're a big state, man.
- 6:56We're a big state. All right, let's get into this
- 7:00now. I did a video on Monday and you
- 7:04texted me afterwards. We did well.
- 7:07We're in a couple of little text groups and and you in one of
- 7:09those, you said, I want to chime in on this.
- 7:12I don't even remember this. Yeah, that's why I wrote it
- 7:15down, because then I would remember it.
- 7:17Yeah. So I did a video and I I talked
- 7:20about what is the importance of rarity in a person's collection.
- 7:26And, and my question was about rarity.
- 7:29And I had a lot of people respond this week.
- 7:31Sometimes there's a lot, sometimes there's a few.
- 7:33I probably had a dozen people, at least maybe 15 chime in on
- 7:38this topic and I would say 7 or 8 of them completely disregarded
- 7:44the rarity thing and they said why are we talking about rarity?
- 7:47I care about iconic. And you said I want to weigh in
- 7:51on this topic. So weigh in, my friend.
- 7:55Well, I was curious. First of all, before I weigh in
- 7:57on my position here, were you surprised by people talking more
- 8:03about iconic than than about rarity?
- 8:06Well, well, here. OK, let me let me put it back to
- 8:09you this way. This, this is the analogy I
- 8:11would say if you were at with a group of friends and you said,
- 8:13hey, guys, what do you think about the Patriots this year?
- 8:16And everybody said, the heck with the Patriots.
- 8:18What do you guys think about the Red Sox?
- 8:19And they all start talking about the Red Sox.
- 8:21You go, I thought I was asking about the Patriots, but everyone
- 8:25cared so little about that. They were overwhelmingly
- 8:28interested in the Red Sox. So to me, that's what happened
- 8:32is I was genuinely curious what people thought about I, I think
- 8:36people care about iconic cards, but I was curious what people
- 8:40thought about rarity. And a bunch of people were
- 8:42basically like, why are we talking about this?
- 8:44The thing that matters is iconic, which surprised me.
- 8:48If anybody ever talks to me about rare cards, I always say
- 8:54love that for you. I couldn't care less for my own
- 8:57collection. I'm much more interested in
- 8:59iconic cards, in cards of iconic players, rookie cards of iconic
- 9:05players, autographed cards of iconic players.
- 9:07If those happen to be rarer, great.
- 9:10But I am the the iconic cards and iconic athletes are much
- 9:16more interesting to me. And there are some people who
- 9:20only want to have rare cards. They don't care who's on the
- 9:22card. They don't care what the grade
- 9:24is. If the card is a pop one, that's
- 9:27what they want, which is cool. That's very interesting.
- 9:31I watch, I enjoy those videos sometimes and if that's what
- 9:34they want, that's great. For me though, I want the high
- 9:37demand cards. I want when I pull out my
- 9:39collection, I want people to know what the cards are that I
- 9:42want them to go. Oh man, I wish I had that card.
- 9:45I don't care about the population of it.
- 9:48I love the 89 Griffey Upper deck card and there are millions of
- 9:53those. Love that.
- 9:55I love the Jerry Rice. I think in your video you
- 9:57mentioned the Jerry Rice rookie card or somebody did a very high
- 10:01pop 86 tops, right? Love that card.
- 10:05I love cards that you know, I love cards that everybody knows.
- 10:11OK, let's just go down that road for just a moment and I'm going
- 10:16to put up on the screen. I am in card ladder again, not
- 10:20only card ladder great for data on recent sales, but it's a
- 10:25fantastic research tool. I use it at this point.
- 10:28I use it every single day. Promo code, promo code midlife.
- 10:32All right, If we look on this PSA, total population of PSA of
- 10:39the Kangaroo Junior 89 upper deck 130,508 and 10s 4360 three
- 10:5110's and it's surging in price at $4850 is apparently the last
- 10:58sale. Now I don't disagree with about
- 11:03iconic. I think iconic is important.
- 11:06Iconic is something that a lot of people care about because
- 11:10part of what we like about cards is we like a nostalgia, we like
- 11:13a memory. We like being able to scratch
- 11:16the itch of a memory and a want from when we were younger.
- 11:20It's why a lot of midlife crisis people get sports cars 'cause
- 11:24when they were younger they wanted a sports card but they
- 11:26couldn't afford it. I said sports card, but sports
- 11:29car and the, the, the thing that is interesting and I wanted to
- 11:35dig deeper with you on is iconic is important.
- 11:41But in order for the value, if, if that matters to you, if it
- 11:46matters to you value, in order for the value to continue to go
- 11:51up on an iconic card that is a high population iconic card like
- 11:57this, there have to be more people that want it then have
- 12:02it. And when there's a card like the
- 12:05Kangaroo Junior 89 upper deck, which last sold today or I guess
- 12:10it was yesterday, $4850 and A10 on eBay.
- 12:14There's a pro steam deal. By the way, it, it makes you, it
- 12:19makes me say for that to go up again, then there has to be
- 12:24another additional person who wants it, who doesn't have it.
- 12:27So what happens if, what am I saying?
- 12:32What I, what I think that I'm saying is, is when there's a
- 12:36high supply of something, it requires a very high demand for
- 12:40something. And so I think that there has
- 12:44the possibility of an erosion of demand over time of some of
- 12:50these iconic cards. And if that happens, it would be
- 12:55an erosion of value. But if the the supply of a card
- 12:59is very low and I'm going to pull up another one while you
- 13:01respond, it wouldn't. If the supply is very low of a
- 13:05card, it doesn't take nearly as many people to want the card for
- 13:12the price to continue to climb. So iconic is important and it I
- 13:18understand why people like it. And I like iconic cards myself.
- 13:22I have a lot of cards that I would consider iconic, but
- 13:25they're a little bit more dependent on a large demand,
- 13:31which we don't know the future of the demand.
- 13:36What do you think? Yeah, I mean, I'd say the same
- 13:40thing about low population cards of players nobody's ever heard
- 13:45of before. You need to find a buyer who
- 13:48wants a card of somebody's nobody's ever heard of before.
- 13:51Whereas there are always buyers for a Ken Griffey Junior rookie
- 13:55card, although the current moment it's possible that a lot
- 13:59of those buyers are repackers, but we'll we'll avoid that
- 14:03conversation for today. When there is always a market
- 14:08for a card as is there, as there is for Ken Griffey Junior's
- 14:11rookie cards, it's much easier to sell it.
- 14:15It's much more liquid than like a 19.
- 14:20Well, I'm gonna try to find a a an unusual card from an unusual
- 14:25set pre war, let's say, for an athlete that nobody's ever heard
- 14:29of before. Well, yes, from there there were
- 14:33a lot of qualifiers that you threw in there and the last
- 14:37qualifier that you threw in there I think was the biggest
- 14:39qualifier. The name recognition is a big
- 14:43part of the demand. So on on this card that I just
- 14:46pulled up on the screen, if you're listening, our good buddy
- 14:49Jake just did a video the other day about how he acquired his
- 14:53grail card, which is the 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams card.
- 14:59And if you look on this card in PSA holders, there is a grand
- 15:04total of 218 BGS 10, SGC 83. So according to some quick math,
- 15:12we're at about 311 total graded by those three major companies
- 15:19of this card. Now, just to continue to play
- 15:22devil's advocate just for the mere sake of discussion, it
- 15:26wouldn't take a very much increase in demand for this
- 15:31card. The demand increase could be
- 15:33just a little bit and the price would move fairly significantly
- 15:38on this card versus the Griffey where there's 100,000 of them
- 15:44graded. It would require a bigger jump
- 15:48in overall demand for the card to continue to jump, right?
- 15:54Absolutely. But we're talking about two
- 15:56iconic cards here. Is the Ted Williams Wilson
- 15:59Franks an iconic card? It is certainly an iconic card
- 16:03for vintage collectors, especially Ted Williams and Red
- 16:08Sox collectors. It is an elusive grail type of
- 16:12card and I'm sure you saw what Jake paid for it.
- 16:15It's a, it's a very, very valuable card.
- 16:19You can get a Griffey that and Jake's is low grade.
- 16:21You can get a low grade low grade Griffey for 50 bucks.
- 16:28I, I don't, I, I think that the Wilson Franks, Ted Williams is
- 16:35a, is a fantastic card. I, I, it's one of the most
- 16:38beautiful cards that I can think of off the top of my head.
- 16:41I'd love to have one. I wouldn't consider it an iconic
- 16:46card And and the reason I would say that is because if I asked
- 16:50the next 10 people walking into the national, what is this card,
- 16:56one or two would know what it was.
- 16:59But if I were to ask the next one.
- 17:01Yeah, yeah, I totally get what you're saying.
- 17:03I agree with you. It's not like I said, if you're
- 17:05a vintage collector, then you probably know the Wilson Franks,
- 17:10Ted Williams. But outside of like hardcore
- 17:13vintage collectors, people don't know that card.
- 17:16It's just it's too rare, it's too obscure for somebody who's
- 17:21just entering the hobby or or a ultra modern collector or
- 17:25somebody who only buys into brakes.
- 17:27But for somebody who is a vintage collector, you're going
- 17:29to know that card. Yeah, there I was watching a
- 17:35YouTube channel. It was, I don't remember what it
- 17:40was. It was one of these channels
- 17:41where it was a big time channel and the guy was at a card show
- 17:46and he was buying and selling at the show.
- 17:50And I can't remember for sure who it was, but but the guy came
- 17:54up to his buying booth. A guy did and he said I have
- 17:57this card. This card's never sold before,
- 18:00but it was a a card that any shop would want, any dealer at a
- 18:05big show would want because it was a big name guy and it was a
- 18:09very short printed card. It might.
- 18:11I don't think it was a one O 1, but it was like an out of five
- 18:13or out of 10. And this particular guy who was
- 18:18flipping it was his thing is to find cards that had never sold
- 18:26before because then nobody really knows what it's worth.
- 18:30And that is easier to find margin and try to then convince
- 18:36the next buyer that it's worth more than they had just paid
- 18:41because there's not a record of the sale.
- 18:44And I think that that's an interesting kind of strategy or
- 18:49an interesting kind of concept of it's like when there's a
- 18:54card, there's a card, and I'm not going to say the card
- 18:57because I don't know if you're in or out on the card, but
- 18:59there's a card that recently came up for auction that I know
- 19:02that you're interested in. And, and it very, very rarely
- 19:07comes up for sale. And when it does, it's usually
- 19:11in a grade that is unattainable. And as a result, that means that
- 19:17this card is is a a once in a blue moon, like once in a five
- 19:25years sort of opportunity. So it's like, if you're going to
- 19:27go for it, now's the time to go for it, which is when you can
- 19:31get a bidding war is when it almost never comes up because
- 19:37the supply is so low. And again, I don't disagree with
- 19:42you about I, I mean people, I'm sure there are people throwing
- 19:44stuff at the screen going, this guy doesn't think iconic
- 19:46matters. Of course I think it matters.
- 19:49I just think it's a fun discussion to talk about that.
- 19:52I do think iconic matters, but when a card is very rare that
- 19:59can create massive jumps in value.
- 20:05Based on slight changes in demand and I think that's part
- 20:10of what we've been seeing with some of these more modern cards
- 20:14that are low serial numbered or refractors were there aren't a
- 20:18lot of them out there. Is the price kind of jumps
- 20:21because 01 came out, This is my one chance and then people could
- 20:25go nuts for it. And I think it's an interesting
- 20:29component within the hobby of that some people dabble in.
- 20:35And I understand why people dabble in it, and I understand
- 20:38why you don't. But back to what you said, I
- 20:42agree that just because a card is rare, if nobody's ever heard
- 20:47of the person, if nobody wants that card, they don't like the
- 20:52looks of that card. It, you know, there are a lot of
- 20:55things that are rare that aren't valuable.
- 21:00Yeah. Yeah, yeah, the, the card that
- 21:02you mentioned, the one that's coming up for auction tonight or
- 21:05tomorrow, by the time this video airs on Saturday, I will have
- 21:10put out, I think I'm going to do a mail day video or I'm going to
- 21:13talk a little obliquely about that because I don't want to
- 21:15give it away. I probably won't get, I think
- 21:17it's going to go for $5000 or more, which is way out of my
- 21:20price range. But in the off chance that it
- 21:23doesn't, I don't want, I don't want to tip people off.
- 21:27But it is like you said, it's very, very rare.
- 21:30The last one I think sold well, actually one sold last month, I
- 21:34think, but it was the first one in two years.
- 21:38And now another one is up and, and there hadn't been before
- 21:432024. There are no records of sales of
- 21:46this card on card ladder. So it's, it's very exciting.
- 21:52I don't think I'm gonna get it, but I'm, I'm gonna go for it.
- 21:54I'm gonna shoot my shot. Yeah, I think you should.
- 21:58And I think that I think that that that swimming pool of the
- 22:06scarce slash rare slash doesn't come up for auction very often.
- 22:11And that's one of the things that happened with the Honus
- 22:12Wagner card recently is 2 came up for sale at like the same
- 22:16time. And there are times where you'll
- 22:18go a year or two and one won't come up for sale.
- 22:21And so it creates an interesting like mental process of how to
- 22:27handle, if you're an interested buyer, what to do that I think
- 22:31is fascinating. OK, The next thing I wanted to
- 22:34ask you about South Theo and I recorded the other day and that
- 22:41episode is going to air on Friday, which we record this on
- 22:46Thursday, but this will air on Saturday just to be as as
- 22:50confusing as possible. So as you hear this it it aired
- 22:53yesterday and it was about the CIA auction.
- 22:57And at the beginning we talked a lot about some cards and what's
- 23:01happening in the market and we had about a 15 minute discussion
- 23:04about the industry and stuff. And one of the things that came
- 23:07up were investment cards and players to invest in.
- 23:12And the reason it came up is because he is affiliated with
- 23:16Collector Investor Auction, not to be confused with Collector
- 23:21Investor Dealer, which if you were Mike going to sell off your
- 23:27collection, would you say that that would be a good place to
- 23:31go? The best place to go, it would
- 23:33be Chris Sewell, Collector, investor, dealer, in that order.
- 23:37Chris is not only a friend of us, a sponsor of this channel.
- 23:42Friend of us is that good English friend of ours, sponsor
- 23:45of this channel. He is, in my opinion, the best
- 23:48dealer out there, the most trustworthy, the most honest,
- 23:51the one who's gonna give you the not not necessarily the most
- 23:55money, but he's going to be reliable.
- 23:57He's gonna be trustworthy and he will give you a very fair deal
- 24:00and tell you why he's offering what he is instead of people who
- 24:05might not want your entire collection.
- 24:07Chris will take everything from I, I.
- 24:09I can't guarantee that, of course, but Chris is the best.
- 24:13You can e-mail him at sewellsportscards@gmail.com if
- 24:16you're interested in selling part or all of your collection.
- 24:20And again, great guy. Did you see he left a comment on
- 24:24our last week's episode? I'm I must have missed that
- 24:28'cause I go through all the comments but I only do it once
- 24:31or twice a week. I haven't seen it.
- 24:32What did he say? He left a comment and he said he
- 24:35thought the flexible pricing, the surge pricing idea at PSA
- 24:41was a fantastic idea. And he said he would happily be
- 24:45a partner in that venture with us.
- 24:48But I don't know how we could somehow be involved because it's
- 24:52PS as pricing. But I do think if, if PSA needed
- 24:57some, you know, like feedback consultants on this, we the
- 25:03three of us would make a pretty good team.
- 25:05And I would love for Chris to round that out because again,
- 25:09he's a great guy. So back to my question that I
- 25:12was headed down is we were talking about investing because
- 25:16on collector Investor podcast, they were, they listed last week
- 25:22their top five players that they would invest in and they did
- 25:28like a draft. And Chris, he, he kind of went
- 25:34with a little bit of a riskier list and we went with the, and
- 25:39then Jeremy went with a little bit of a, a safer risk.
- 25:43And I asked Theo, I said, Theo, what would your first pick be if
- 25:48you were to pick one player to invest in?
- 25:51And who do you think? He said.
- 25:53Clemente. Yeah, that.
- 25:57Would have been a good one. That's not what he said, what he
- 26:00said, Jackie Robinson. OK.
- 26:04Do you think that Jackie Robinson is the best answer?
- 26:09If you want, are we talking safe investments or are we talking
- 26:13risky investments? I mean, it depends on your
- 26:16appetite for risk. I think Babe Ruth is a better
- 26:20investment. Babe Ruth kind of transcends.
- 26:23They're both very, very safe. They're both very, very good.
- 26:25I just wonder if we're talking about 30 year investment or five
- 26:29year investments because we could be and I'm not predicting
- 26:33anything. I'm not saying anything.
- 26:34We could be right now at the at the peak because of everything
- 26:38that's happening in the market right now, repacks and
- 26:42everything and whatnot. The hell that might not be here
- 26:48as it is right now in five years, in three years.
- 26:51And so you have to wonder, are we at a or near or approaching a
- 26:57value peak in the market, especially, especially of iconic
- 27:02cards which have skyrocketed in the last three years?
- 27:05Somebody who nobody mentioned that I continue to think is
- 27:14underappreciated in the hobby is Tiger Woods.
- 27:19Because there's this obsession. I know if you're listening, you
- 27:23guys should. You should see the face that
- 27:26Mike is giving me when I said that.
- 27:28I let me hear me out for a second.
- 27:31If you go through a lot of the sports, whether they be major
- 27:36sports like baseball or whether you go through some of the
- 27:40smaller sports in the hobby like soccer, there has been this huge
- 27:47jump in appreciation for the Goats.
- 27:51It's like Ohtani and Ruth and and those are the guys that have
- 27:56gone. What's that?
- 27:58Messi. Yeah, Messi and a great example
- 28:02Pele stuff has gone way up. I think that the goats Jordan
- 28:08stuff has gone insane. But one of the most popular
- 28:13sports, and not just in the US, but is a very popular sport and
- 28:17watched worldwide is is golf and Tiger is the GOAT.
- 28:24And his stuff is still, when you compare it to the other people
- 28:30that I mentioned, it's very affordable.
- 28:33Is he the go? Versus what?
- 28:36Jack Nicholas. Yeah.
- 28:38I mean, dude, listen, Jack Nicholas was really good,
- 28:42really, really good. But Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods
- 28:48changed the game. Like Curry.
- 28:51Yep. And he dominated the game like
- 28:56Gretzky. He, he, he's as recognizable.
- 29:03I mean, if you were to list right now, living human beings,
- 29:07most recognizable person on the planet, he's going to be in the
- 29:10top 10. Agree.
- 29:12I agree with that. I just think that Nicholas was.
- 29:15Better I I mean. I think you're comparing LeBron
- 29:21Tiger to Michael Jordan. Jack Nicklaus.
- 29:25Wow. Really.
- 29:27Yeah. Let us know in the comments.
- 29:29Is Tiger the GOAT? The thing about Tiger is the the
- 29:36the depth of talent when Tiger was playing is much different
- 29:42than the depth of talent when Jack Nicklaus was was playing
- 29:46and are. You analyzing Nicholas for not
- 29:49having good competition. I'm not saying he didn't have
- 29:52good competition. I'm not, I'm saying he didn't
- 29:54have the depth of competition. I, I mean, I mean, I know and I
- 30:01know that people are going to say, well, it's like, you know,
- 30:03you Babe Ruth was playing against plumbers and
- 30:06electricians. You know, like that whole
- 30:08argument, which is just like, come on.
- 30:11I, I think that when you are as dominant as Ruth, I don't want
- 30:16to get into that. I don't want to even open that
- 30:17can of worms right now. We could do that another day.
- 30:21I think that Tiger Woods did absolute insane things.
- 30:27He was clutch. He was charismatic.
- 30:31He was he, he revolutionized the sport.
- 30:35He changed the marketing of the entire sport single handedly.
- 30:41He is and it's not. And it's not even when you talk
- 30:45about the GOAT sometimes it's like is, is it the best player?
- 30:50Because like we could get into this.
- 30:52I mean like Mantle wasn't the best player of the 50s and 60s
- 30:58but he's the. Most popular in the hobby?
- 30:59Correct. And I think that Tiger is, is
- 31:05arguably maybe one of the only people worth even collecting in
- 31:12the hobby, you know? Yeah.
- 31:15I mean. I'm with you.
- 31:17Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson and you know exactly Rory
- 31:23McIlroy. Those guys were good, but Tiger
- 31:26is the guy that you want to collect.
- 31:28Scotty Scheffler. Oh my, that guy's that guy.
- 31:32You know I he so. I don't follow golf all that
- 31:37much, so take this with be a big, big grain of salt, But the
- 31:41fact that I know about Scotty Scheffler, I don't.
- 31:45I haven't watched golf in 20 years and Scotty Scheffler is
- 31:48like holy cow he is insanely good.
- 31:53A guy who so guy in the hobby? John Mangini.
- 31:59Never heard of him. John Mangini is he sometimes
- 32:07looks at things from different angles than other people look at
- 32:12them. And he will be attracted to
- 32:14things that sometimes people ignore that shouldn't be
- 32:20ignored. And and so he's at times he's a
- 32:24little ahead of of the curve on, on some of that kind of stuff.
- 32:30And I remember about a year or a year and a half ago, he was
- 32:34texted in a group I was in and he was like, Scotty Scheffler
- 32:37has almost no cards, but he has this Sports Illustrated for Kids
- 32:42card that's stupid cheap, at least it was at the time.
- 32:47And he was just like, it's like his only like notable card.
- 32:52And you can buy it at the time for like, I don't know, 15 or 20
- 32:56bucks. And it was like, I don't, I have
- 32:59no idea what that card goes for now.
- 33:01But he went out and bought it. And then he'll show it, you
- 33:05know, And then I don't really think anything of it.
- 33:07And it was like he he he sent a picture, I think it was
- 33:10yesterday of a very similar thing that he did.
- 33:15I was listening to the guys on spitballing cards.
- 33:20Is that what they're called? Yeah, what they're called
- 33:23spitballing cards. And he was talking about, they
- 33:26were talking about how black parallels were kind of not as
- 33:30big a deal as they used to be, but they thought that the red
- 33:33auto cards were like the thing that was going to replace it.
- 33:38And and then I'm, I'm looking and Mangini, I'm not going to
- 33:45find it right now, but Mangini sends a picture of a Shohei red
- 33:51auto card and I'm like, Dang it, he always does this.
- 33:55He has, he's always like figuring it out.
- 34:01I'm going to find this. You're not interested.
- 34:05The best way to make a Sports Illustrated for Kids card
- 34:07valuable is to get it autographed and some.
- 34:10There's Scotty Scheffler's rookie SI for kids card is 2017.
- 34:14This is first one as far as I know.
- 34:17There's one autographed in the PSA population.
- 34:20It's currently for sale on eBay right now for $8000.
- 34:24Oh, really? Yeah, I'm gonna.
- 34:27OK, so the the the ship has sailed, apparently.
- 34:30I'm gonna show you this card that Mangini sent, and I'm like,
- 34:35I bet it's a huge card. Now the red.
- 34:38I'm sorry, there are three of them on eBay.
- 34:43They're all listed for at least $6000.
- 34:47So here's a show. Hey, Red Auto.
- 34:51Does Mangini own that? Yes, I mean, I mean I think
- 34:56that's and I remember when he got it like a couple years ago
- 34:59and he like texted, oh look, I got this.
- 35:01This is a cool. I bet that's a massive card
- 35:05right now. I would guess $10,000 at.
- 35:08Least Oh my gosh. It's a second year Shohei red
- 35:14ink numbered to what was it, 10? 70. 70, I would guess that's 10
- 35:21and I'm probably Mangini's probably right now as he's.
- 35:25Laughing at us. 25,000. He doesn't even care what it's
- 35:30worth 'cause he's not selling it right?
- 35:32He doesn't care. Yeah, I know.
- 35:34I mean he's the one who has the Magic Johnson 81 tops in a 10
- 35:40and after Adam sold his Larry Bird for like 50 grand or
- 35:44whatever, he sold it 30. Thousand.
- 35:45Yeah. We've been yelling at Mangini.
- 35:48You Mangini, you got to sell that magic.
- 35:50You got to sell it. And he's like, I don't want to
- 35:52sell it. I like it.
- 35:53And we're just like, he doesn't sell, which I respect.
- 35:59Chris Sewell has the black refractor LeBron rookie that
- 36:04shot up to $80,000. He paid 800 for it and shot up
- 36:08to $80,000 and it still sits in his box today worth 20 or
- 36:1230,000. I can't even imagine.
- 36:16I mean, my car's not even worth 20 or 30,000.
- 36:21Mine either and I just bought it a year ago.
- 36:25Oh man. Well, we've covered a lot.
- 36:28I, I will, I will. Spoiler alert if you haven't
- 36:31watched that episode of Collector Investor Podcast.
- 36:35Chris's fifth pick, his 5th pick, the 10th overall pick was
- 36:39Jaden Daniels as best investment.
- 36:44That's Chris hopeful. I love how much he loves his,
- 36:49his Baltimore teams. You know, he's he's a although I
- 36:54guess. So he's a Washington fan and not
- 36:57a Ravens fan. Yeah, because it's probably from
- 36:59childhood, right? The Ravens weren't there yet.
- 37:02Yeah, I think so. Or because I think he explained
- 37:05this to me on a video one time. I think there was some when he
- 37:08was a kid, he could only see Washington Commanders while
- 37:13Washington Redskins games. And I don't, I don't remember
- 37:17now, but yeah, it's something to do from his childhood.
- 37:21All right. Well, next week you and I at
- 37:25this time will be in Strongsville, will be in
- 37:28Independence, OH, at the Strongsville card Show and we
- 37:32are still, correct me if I'm wrong, we're still going to
- 37:35record. We're just going to record it
- 37:37early. So this episode next Saturday
- 37:40will still air even though there will be all this stuff going on.
- 37:45So we're going to record it a day earlier to make sure that it
- 37:48still airs on that Saturday, which would be April 10th, which
- 37:51is the night of the Four Collectors trade night at the
- 37:56Holiday Inn in Independence. OH, so we can maybe talk a
- 38:01little bit about our plans and our expectations a little bit
- 38:05next week, along with some other stuff.
- 38:08But it's not that we're ignoring it.
- 38:10When I was on my way home today, I listen to Mike Moynihan
- 38:14talking with Chris from Missouri about their targets.
- 38:19They kind of did their little preview show thing, which was
- 38:23interesting. And Mike Moynihan was sure to
- 38:25point out that he said that my, my book was I I wrote it down
- 38:32like a a wonderful sleep aid, even though he hasn't actually
- 38:36read it. So I was just like, that's cool.
- 38:39Yeah, he hadn't read it. He just wanted to grind my
- 38:43gears. OK, I I'm looking forward to
- 38:49getting my copy of your book. I'm looking forward to you
- 38:52reading it. I think you'll like it.
- 38:54I do so all right. We're 30, I don't want my money
- 38:58back. I'll give you your money back if
- 39:00you don't like it, I'll I'll give you double your money back.
- 39:03OK, deal. This is a.
- 39:05Great investment. Yeah, I mean, what?
- 39:07What more could you ask? All right.
- 39:11Well, we're 39 minutes in. Is there anything else that you
- 39:14want to throw out there to Matt from Providence or Jake or
- 39:18anybody that we want to start a war with or anything while
- 39:22before we wrap this up? Tony, how about let's start a
- 39:26war with Tony and Mike Petty? Oh well, I don't really think
- 39:31that would be smart on our half, but I love those guys.
- 39:36War we would, surely. Lose.
- 39:39We would, yes. I'm looking forward to hanging
- 39:42out with those guys next week. Very much looking forward to
- 39:45that. I, I, I maybe I'll talk about
- 39:48this next week, but I already have at least one.
- 39:53No, I already have at least one sprayed purchase in place.
- 39:59I have another, I think purchase in place.
- 40:03I've already got I think 3 sales.
- 40:06Already in before sales already in place, yes.
- 40:10So I don't know behind the scenes, man.
- 40:13I've been, I've been all Mr. Burns and you know.
- 40:17Wow, good for you. I'm I'm working on a deal.
- 40:19It would put Take Me Out of the running for the big card.
- 40:23But I also think I don't have much of a shot at the big card
- 40:25that I talked about and this one is also my grail card.
- 40:30So I'm working on it. I don't know if we're going to
- 40:34come to an agreement cuz the, the dealer is not being very
- 40:37flexible, understandably. I, I totally get it by the way.
- 40:41So we'll see. We'll see if I can talk him down
- 40:44at Strongsville. Well, this will be great content
- 40:46for the Strongsville episodes. Yeah.
- 40:49All right, bud. All right.
- 40:51See you everybody.
