- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It. All starts right now.
- 0:16Welcome back to the Three O Tech presented by Sea Geek.
- 0:18This is episode 465. I'll be your host, Kyle Corwin.
- 0:20I'm here with my Co host Nate Reyes.
- 0:24Nate. Always bringing that fire on
- 0:27Wednesday, on Wednesday. Shout out everybody joining us
- 0:31live, hanging out in the chat with us.
- 0:34I mean, that's a big deal. Shout out live.
- 0:44If you're not live, you better not be fist pumping.
- 0:47Yeah, you can only be fist pumping if you're live.
- 0:49Shout out to those in the live. Shout out to those that will
- 0:51join the live as the episode proceeds.
- 0:56How you doing man? It's just hot, dude.
- 0:59Like I'm really ready. I'm really ready to just dive
- 1:02in. Things aren't computing in my
- 1:05head. When you're in Arizona and it's
- 1:07still one O 8. When it's still one O 8, you're
- 1:13like, I don't understand. I just did a fantasy football
- 1:16draft. We finally got through the dog
- 1:19days of the baseball season and I my ass is still sweaty and
- 1:27you're just like. That's not where you want to be.
- 1:30That's not where you want to be like you.
- 1:32I'm ready for hoodies. I'm ready for pants.
- 1:36I'm ready for sweats. The last two days not to rub a
- 1:40dead last two days here have been 77 so we're we're well on
- 1:43our way it's. Just a cool 30° difference.
- 1:47That's insane. I'm just ready.
- 1:51I'm so excited. So Sunday it's going to be 73.
- 1:54We're creeping, we're creeping into hoodie weather.
- 1:56It's the best season of the year.
- 1:59We're we're coming up on the best month of the year.
- 2:02And not just cause yours truly's birthday kind of kicks things
- 2:06off October 2nd, in case anybody's keeping track at home.
- 2:11But did you really consider that the best month of the year?
- 2:14I think so man, September is like a nice.
- 2:17Tease. We're just we're counting all
- 2:19things outside of baseball, too. Well, baseball plays a huge
- 2:22factor in it. I mean, you have the postseason,
- 2:24obviously it is it is my birthday month.
- 2:28As I mentioned, September is really the the teaser of fall.
- 2:32Some days are feel like fall, but other days, like you said,
- 2:37we're we're dealing with the the the heart of summer still it
- 2:41seems. But October, once you're in
- 2:42October, you I think you're pretty much in the clear.
- 2:44So we're looking at the best month of the year, in my
- 2:47opinion, October, We're knocking on the door.
- 2:52I mean, it's fair, I get that. I would argue May.
- 2:56I think May is May's pretty cool.
- 2:59No, May sucks. There's too many allergies, too
- 3:02many allergies in May. I can't, I can't.
- 3:04I can't deal with the allergies in May.
- 3:05It's those are not my friend and I I refuse to put up with him if
- 3:10if given the choice. Whatever, dude, whatever.
- 3:15But talking about time of year, it is September.
- 3:17And look, I'll be honest with you, Nate and I, we're just
- 3:19we're just literally seconds. I was going to say minutes,
- 3:22seconds before we started the episode talking about how we're
- 3:27in like the residual of of August, if that makes sense.
- 3:33Like as baseball fans, we're looking you, you would think,
- 3:36and we, you and I were building this up all summer.
- 3:39Like, oh, we just got to make it September.
- 3:41Then things are really going to start kicking into gear.
- 3:44We're still kind of feeling the like after effects of August.
- 3:47We're not quite into like, OK, now we go into full postseason
- 3:52hunt mode yet. Where's that?
- 3:54Where's that? Come in, You know what I mean.
- 3:58September. 20th. Give me, yeah, give me a date.
- 4:02I mean, like, what is your, what is as a baseball fan, what is
- 4:05your, what is the date in the month, assuming it's in
- 4:08September? What, Like what is your date
- 4:10where you're like, all right, we're locked in.
- 4:12We're in playoff mode or we're in postseason mode.
- 4:16Now we go like what it? What date is that for you?
- 4:22It's so hard. Like when we grew up because
- 4:24like we, we, we grew up, the post season is only in October.
- 4:30Now it's like normal to be in November.
- 4:32So like kind of pushes everything back and you're like,
- 4:36I don't know, like I'm going to say like, except like the last
- 4:40two weeks of September. So, I mean, looking at this
- 4:45year's calendar, we're talking, yeah, or you're talking, I
- 4:48should say, like the 16th. So I got a little less than two
- 4:52weeks. So I mean, who knows?
- 4:54Hopefully some things start to pick up here and I, I will say
- 4:58there are some, there are some storylines that are brewing,
- 5:02some of which we've already touched on, some of which we'll
- 5:04touch on today and some of which we'll touch on in the
- 5:06foreseeable future. But I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm needing
- 5:10that that day to come where we're where there's like a
- 5:14crisp, there's a crispness to the air.
- 5:17I need a Christmas crispness. Crispness.
- 5:21I need a rice Crispness to the air to where we go.
- 5:25Today's the day and you'll just know you know it'll be like
- 5:29you'll you'll catch like a breeze come by your ear.
- 5:32It'll whisper to go, hey, today's the day we lock in for
- 5:37postseason baseball. And you just know this is.
- 5:40Going to be the first postseason we haven't linked up in a while.
- 5:45That's not true. Linked up in postseason last
- 5:49year. Last year didn't do it the year
- 5:51before. We didn't do 2022.
- 5:55No, 2021 was AL wild card game. 2022, What did we do?
- 6:01We did something. We did a trip in 2022.
- 6:04What did we do? I'm blanking.
- 6:10WBC was 2023. Did we not do any something in
- 6:162022? I don't remember.
- 6:17We didn't do playoffs though, I know that much because last year
- 6:21was the ALDS in Baltimore. So yeah, we're alternating at
- 6:25this rate, I guess. We are we are All Star game next
- 6:28year. All Star game next year, but
- 6:31Speaking of those storylines I mentioned that are are are
- 6:33starting to brew. Let's get into that.
- 6:35Let's right off the top here. Let's talk the return of
- 6:39Fernando Tatis Junior Fernando. Fernando El.
- 6:46Nino I I can't help but here. Dave Bryan, Dave O'Brien, Don
- 6:53Orsillo. There you go, Fernando.
- 6:58Remember that? Remember that video I was
- 7:00talking about? I'm sure you've seen it.
- 7:01It's like they dubbed over. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:05Super casual catch. It's like.
- 7:07A Like the little line? Yeah, like a little humpback
- 7:09liner. A.
- 7:09Little bleeder Fernando, I can't help but here.
- 7:14Old, old Donnie baseball, Fernando Tatis reinstated from
- 7:21the 6th day IL providing some, I don't want to say reinforcements
- 7:27because I mean, he's he's he's a big part of the team.
- 7:29It's not like he's some depth piece, but he is certainly
- 7:33bringing he he's certainly bringing a punch to a team that
- 7:36has already been there. They've been playing well.
- 7:38They've been punching. They've been they've already
- 7:39been punching. So he's just bringing an extra
- 7:41punch. But the the Padres entering
- 7:47Wednesday 79 and 61, five and a half games back three up in the
- 7:52wild card. They're six and four in their
- 7:54last ten. They won two straight and they
- 7:55have a + 70 run differential, not to mention an additional
- 7:59reinforcement, if you will, you Darvish is making his first
- 8:02start in over three months tonight.
- 8:05And All in all, this is just a this is a a this is just great
- 8:09news for Padres fans. And you could even make the
- 8:12argument that it creates a little bit of a log jam
- 8:17defensively or maybe not defensively, but just generally
- 8:21speaking, because you have to think they've been getting,
- 8:24they've been getting some production out of David Peralta,
- 8:27believe Hassan Kim is close to being back.
- 8:33Like 99% sure that's the case. Cronin worse, been playing like
- 8:37OK, Xander's been playing like a little bit better as of late.
- 8:43I mean, then the outfield has just been the outfield.
- 8:45Like you've had pro far, pro far.
- 8:48Things. So like you're going to have to
- 8:51be, you're going to have to be manipulating the, the the line
- 8:55up a little bit, give some guys some days off, which may be
- 8:57beneficial at this point of the year because it's a.
- 8:59Good problem to have. We're coming up on, we're coming
- 9:01up on the it's. A good problem to have.
- 9:03The playoff stretch here so make sure these guys are well rested.
- 9:06But what do you what? What would you say this this
- 9:11reinstatement from the 6th day IO of Fernando Tatis does for
- 9:14the Padres? It's a big boost, dude.
- 9:16It's a big boost. Like even if we remove our, I
- 9:24won't, I won't say bias, but our opinion around over the last few
- 9:28years between suspension and injuries.
- 9:30Like in reality, he is still a rare breed.
- 9:35Like Fernando Tatis is still a superstar playmaker.
- 9:41Gold Glover, by the way. Like, I think we need to throw
- 9:43some respect on the fact that he went from shortstop out to right
- 9:48field and he immediately won a Gold Glove.
- 9:50No, Maybe platinum. Yeah, I was going to say, we've
- 9:52talked about that. We brought this up before.
- 9:54It was platinum. Like that's different.
- 9:57I don't think people understand. Like that's nuts.
- 10:00So I think anything that you get out of him offensively, I mean,
- 10:07I'm not going to say is like a bonus, but at this point, like
- 10:12he's just a he's a he's an impact.
- 10:15He's an impact. And no matter what he's going to
- 10:18do, he's going to impact the game.
- 10:20If he doesn't have power tonight, he's going to get on
- 10:23base. If he's getting on base, he's
- 10:26stealing bases. He's making plays in right
- 10:28field, he's throwing guys out, he's taking extra 90 stealing
- 10:31bags. Like there's some type of
- 10:34impact. There's a ripple effect that
- 10:35Tatis creates and I, I, I think based on a lot of teams as trade
- 10:43deadline this year, there's nothing that they did at the
- 10:48deadline that would be as beneficial as getting a guy back
- 10:53at this time, You know what I mean?
- 10:57What's the deal with the playoff thing though?
- 10:59What's the deal with like the post season eligibility?
- 11:03Oh no, he's fine. Like it's because.
- 11:04He played enough before, right? No, no, no, that's all that.
- 11:07I mean that's only transaction based.
- 11:09That's not like amount of amount of games you play like if you're
- 11:11on the if you're on the 40 man like you're.
- 11:13You're on the 40 man. You're.
- 11:14In the clear, Yeah, No, no, that was only that that question that
- 11:18got brought up like a week or so ago.
- 11:20That's only relevant to transactions.
- 11:23Right, fair enough. I think the, I think the I, I
- 11:26think the the division, I think the division is about done.
- 11:33I think it was a cute story when the Padres and Diamondbacks were
- 11:37like 2 1/2 out from the Dodgers. It's 5 1/2 and 6 now.
- 11:43Can I interject? You disagree.
- 11:47I disagree in that it was a cute story.
- 11:49I've I legitimately think and view the Padres and the
- 11:54Diamondbacks. At that point in time, I viewed
- 11:58them as a legitimate threat to possibly sneak away with the
- 12:02division. The Dodgers have been playing a
- 12:04little bit better, but the Padres and D backs just haven't
- 12:07really slowed down. It's just that the Dodgers have
- 12:10gave themselves enough of a cushion to where, even with
- 12:13skids here and there, and we've seen this elsewhere around the
- 12:15league in in other divisional races or wild card races, even
- 12:19where there was enough of a cushion to where they could hit
- 12:21a little bit of a skid, They could drop a a couple series
- 12:24here there and still be fine. I but I'm just saying, I think
- 12:28the Padres again, Padres and the D backs, I viewed them at the
- 12:32time as I, I was giving them a little bit more credit than just
- 12:36them being a cute story, even with the injuries that that the
- 12:42Dodgers were facing. It's just, it's just that they
- 12:45maybe run out of steam in that, in that the.
- 12:47Division was a cute story. No, but that's what I'm.
- 12:50Saying them as a whole, I do think that this Padre team would
- 12:55be a difficult match up in the postseason and I do think that
- 12:59they can do some damage. No, and I agree with you on
- 13:02that, but I, but I'm saying I'm, I'm, I'm talking about the
- 13:07division like I viewed them as a, as a legitimate threat given
- 13:11the aforementioned injury, injuries that the Dodgers are
- 13:13dealing with and the fact that they're just playing very, very,
- 13:16very good baseball, as were the D backs, even better than the
- 13:19Padres. So. 5 1/2 back.
- 13:24I'm not. No, no, no.
- 13:25I'm not saying I'm. I'm not saying can.
- 13:27We call it a cute story now. Well, I mean, if I, if I, if
- 13:33like a a week and a half ago, I viewed them as a, as a
- 13:37legitimate threat to possibly, maybe take the division.
- 13:40I can't then a week and a half later go, yeah, it's just a cute
- 13:43story. Like I just kind of have to
- 13:46leave it be and just see how it shakes out.
- 13:48But I I I can't flip the script that quickly or that
- 13:51drastically. I'll do it for you.
- 13:56I mean, go for it. I, I, I don't know.
- 13:58I, I just, I, I, I think it goes back to what I said back in
- 14:01March where I said, and I feel like I've repeated this time and
- 14:06time again, but I said back in March that it's not going to be
- 14:08a cakewalk for the Dodgers get into the World Series.
- 14:12Like it's, that's anything but a guarantee.
- 14:15And so many people were like, what are you talking about,
- 14:16dude? Like, look how much money they
- 14:18spend. And then you also had some
- 14:19people on the flip side, they're like, yeah, no, it totally makes
- 14:21sense. It rarely works out that way.
- 14:23That the best team on paper, the team that spends the most money
- 14:25just prances to the World Series.
- 14:28So that, I mean, there were people in in both camps, but I
- 14:31firmly believed and I I stuck by that, that it wasn't going to be
- 14:37easy. So given that when the Padres
- 14:40and D backs are kind of sneaking up, they're in the rear view
- 14:42mirror, like the whole objects in mirror closer than they
- 14:45appear kind of thing. I'm going this is this is right
- 14:49in line with what I said back in March that like it's not going
- 14:51to be easy for the Dodgers, But credit to them.
- 14:53They've they've they've held their own and and held off these
- 14:56other two teams in the division long enough, or at least at this
- 14:59point. So I don't know, I don't know
- 15:03how it shakes out, but I, I, I will not call their their stab
- 15:09at the division that has seemingly dissipated a little
- 15:13bit. I I won't call it a cute story.
- 15:15That's the story. I'm calling it a cute story.
- 15:19It was a cute story because it was.
- 15:20It was. It lasted for a week and a half,
- 15:23two weeks. That's all.
- 15:24But it's 5 1/2 games like if a month, yeah.
- 15:30OK, so let's say, OK, let's say they don't take the division.
- 15:33Let's say they finish a game and a half back.
- 15:35I mean, who isn't sweating in that scenario?
- 15:39Like if if you're the Dodgers and you get to the end of the
- 15:41season and you look back and you look, you look at the standings,
- 15:45the the regular season's wrapped up and you look at the standings
- 15:48and you were you only finished a game and a half up.
- 15:50You you mean to tell me you're not you're not wiping your brow
- 15:54after that going wow, we made it by the skin of our teeth.
- 15:59Not that that's what they're they're not.
- 16:01That's not like the end. Goal game and a half year
- 16:03threshold. Like when?
- 16:04That's just an example, but I'm saying like.
- 16:07Where does the sweat start to roll?
- 16:11I mean, if the die, if you finish the regular season up
- 16:14only two, I'll call it two games. 2 1/2.
- 16:19I'm like, OK, whatever, but two games, I'll, I'll say that if
- 16:29it's if it's over two games, we can call it a cute story then.
- 16:33But until then, if they can even close the gap to two games, I
- 16:37refuse to call it a cute story. That's that's, that's my, that's
- 16:40my, my, my wrap up there. Yeah, but I mean the Tatis and
- 16:45and you edition, I'm curious to see what you Darvish is able to
- 16:50do. I mean, let's face it, like you
- 16:56can't necessarily get him ramped up to 100 pitches.
- 17:00No, right away. They.
- 17:01Don't need him to. I, I mean, I looked at the
- 17:03numbers since the break. Well, I mean offensively since
- 17:06the break, the third best team OPS at 777.
- 17:12But regarding the the the pitching side of things with
- 17:14you, they don't need him to be the vintage you because since
- 17:18the break, they also are sporting the 6th best team ERA
- 17:21since the break at 362. So they're they're handling both
- 17:25sides of the ball just fine with with and that's that's without
- 17:29either of these editions. So like post?
- 17:31Season you though, like post season, you're going to need,
- 17:34you're going to need a little something something.
- 17:36Yeah. Well, you know what I mean.
- 17:38Because like, I don't, I'm not at the point of trusting Joe
- 17:41Musgrove. Like I, I can't, I can't trust
- 17:45him. No, as much as I would like to,
- 17:47I can't. I think Michael King has been
- 17:49had a good year. I've I've gotten a witness event
- 17:51as a as a Yankee. I think he's very solid.
- 17:55But like I, I think there's a big gap between Dylan sees and a
- 18:00strong #2. Yep, I would agree.
- 18:02Specifically starting off a series in the postseason.
- 18:05So that's all I'm saying about you.
- 18:07And I don't know if he's going to get ramped up in time to be
- 18:09that, which would he that mean that's what he would normally
- 18:12be. You'd be surprised how
- 18:17interesting we've seen some guys very like recently and even at
- 18:22the very moment get ramped up somewhat quickly, at least
- 18:27enough to where they can contribute meaningful innings in
- 18:31games that matter. So I think.
- 18:32You will. I think you still will.
- 18:35Yeah. So let's let's keep it out West,
- 18:43keep it with the Dodgers team We've just been talking about
- 18:46Shohei has made his return to Anaheim.
- 18:52And can I just go ahead and say that I think the reports were a
- 18:55little off in saying that he received mostly cheers because I
- 19:00went back and looked at the clip and a lot of booze.
- 19:03I don't know. I, I mean, I, I can't give you
- 19:05like a percentage ratio, but I to say mostly cheers.
- 19:12That seems a little off. I I'd maybe go like, I'd maybe
- 19:16go like 5545, which I guess technically is majority, but I
- 19:24don't know. I I just think it.
- 19:25Was are loud enough to hear? And that's what I'm saying and
- 19:30not to mention. Cheers.
- 19:32Yeah, the I, I when I was looking at the OR when I was
- 19:36watching it, I'm seeing they they showed this one guy and he
- 19:40looks over his buddy who's just like sitting there and he's
- 19:43like, dude, stand up. Like what do you like stand up
- 19:45and acknowledge like what's happening to the guy?
- 19:48Like stands up. And then I'm looking around like
- 19:49there's other Angels fan just sitting.
- 19:51And I'm like, you don't have a kid.
- 19:54You're not, you're not like handicapped, like stand up.
- 19:59I'm. Going to throw some people under
- 20:01the bus here because they're not going to hear this.
- 20:05So whatever. Paige has a friend who's
- 20:11actually her maid of honor, her boyfriend and her live out
- 20:14there. You've been in LA, you've been
- 20:17around that area. It's it's kind of the only
- 20:24thing, right? Murray's Murray's Watching
- 20:26Murray. 'S watching trend Dodgerfin.
- 20:28Shred lightly. Trend.
- 20:29Light. I'm talking Angel fans
- 20:30specifically. I have my own thoughts on LA,
- 20:33but I'm I'll convince myself. I think that the only other time
- 20:38I've somewhat seen it, believe it or not, are Rockies fans.
- 20:45There's this like social aspect to going to a game where you
- 20:52don't even really like care that much.
- 20:57You're just going to the game because it's like, it's like
- 21:00you're with a group of friends and this is what you do on a
- 21:02Friday night. That's kind of what I I've never
- 21:07been to Anaheim, I've never been to LA, I've never been to an
- 21:10Angels game. But based.
- 21:11On That's not true. That's not true.
- 21:13You've been to a Tempe El El Diablo or whatever it's called.
- 21:21El Diablo, El El Diablo, Tempe. Where?
- 21:24Where were we at? What was that place called?
- 21:26I want you to keep trying. You can say Tempe, Tempe,
- 21:29Diablo. That's Tempe.
- 21:32What did I did? I say Tempe El Diablo?
- 21:34Yeah. I don't know what that means.
- 21:38Yeah. So you have been to an Angels
- 21:39game? I think that there is this,
- 21:44like, social aspect that Trump's the fandom, you know what I'm
- 21:51saying? Like, yeah, like one of those,
- 21:54like, I think if you were to walk around a Rockies game with
- 21:59a microphone and interview fans randomly and just be like, don't
- 22:04look at the scoreboard, can you name the line up?
- 22:08I don't think a lot of them could.
- 22:12And I think it's a very similar situation with the Angels.
- 22:16Not that this is an excuse by any means.
- 22:21I think the Angels organization is kind of a train wreck in a
- 22:25lot of different ways, but I think that there's a lot of
- 22:30people there that just went. The reason I brought up Paige's
- 22:35maid of honor is because her boyfriend's the same way.
- 22:36He's like, I don't know, we're just going to a game like that's
- 22:38we're just going to have fun and then we're going out after.
- 22:41But do you think given their what, where are they at in terms
- 22:46of worst human baseball right now?
- 22:49I mean, I know they're like, they're well down there 57 wins.
- 22:53Marlins are worse, White Sox are worse, and the Rockies are the
- 22:58worst. So they're what is that fourth
- 23:00worst team? Fourth worst team in baseball.
- 23:02So like, I bring that up because I'm, I'm, I'm wondering at this
- 23:07stage of the game, though, to me it seems a little bit different
- 23:11than than Dodger Stadium, where you're just going to have your
- 23:15your die hard Dodger fans. Not to say there's not die hard
- 23:17Angels fans, but like how many of these people that are at the
- 23:20ballpark do you think are there just to be there?
- 23:25Like if you're if if you've sat through this season as an Angels
- 23:30fan and that's what. I'm saying, man, this is what
- 23:32I'm saying. It's just like something to do.
- 23:33It's just like something to do. And like, tickets are cheap and
- 23:35like, let's go. Like, why not?
- 23:37Like, what do you feel like doing tonight?
- 23:39I don't know, just go to a game, you know?
- 23:44Now, one could also argue is that how many of those cheers
- 23:49were from Dodger fans when you talk about the ratio?
- 23:53Yeah, they, they travelled real well travelled.
- 23:58I mean, they, they showed up, they showed out very well.
- 24:02I, I, I noticed that immediately when they started panning.
- 24:05I'm like, that's a lot of blue. So as far as Angels fans go, I
- 24:09don't know. I just, I think think they're
- 24:11pretty checked out as a fan base.
- 24:14I don't know how I feel about the was that photoshopped the
- 24:23scoreboard thing that says he used to work here?
- 24:25No, apparently that was real. That's kind of funny, honestly.
- 24:29I mean, that's, no, that's a that's a plus move.
- 24:31I'll, I'll give him credit for that because I mean, what do you
- 24:34got to lose at this point? And like, it's, it's just a guy
- 24:36like sure, he's just a, a good dude.
- 24:38He was a good, a good ambassador for your organization and you
- 24:41just decided to let him walk out the door, which, whatever, it's
- 24:45fine. But the, my, my whole thing with
- 24:48the people that, with the Angels fans that booed him, it's like.
- 24:53The weird though. Who do you think you're booing?
- 24:56Like, do you think you're booing a guy that wanted to be like,
- 25:01spiteful and vindictive with his free agency move in a way that
- 25:07would hurt you as much as he possibly could?
- 25:10Or do you think we're dealing with a guy who looked at the
- 25:14state of the organization and realized like, oh, this isn't
- 25:18really going anywhere and I need to look out for, for me, my
- 25:24family, my future. And it's obvious that I'm going
- 25:28to get the largest contract in baseball That like, that's not,
- 25:32that's not like a greed thing. That's just how this business
- 25:35works. And am I going to say no to
- 25:37that? No.
- 25:38So let's look around the league. Let's see who's willing to offer
- 25:42that. And let's see which one is the
- 25:44best fit. And yeah, it sucks.
- 25:46He, he, he goes right across town.
- 25:48But like, are you really gonna Boo him for not sticking around
- 25:51with this dumpster fire of an organization like you?
- 25:55You don't have to look very far to see somebody that's already
- 25:58done that in a, in a very similar situation, in a, in a
- 26:01very similar stature in Mike Trout.
- 26:03Where it's like saying this is what I'm talking about the
- 26:05casual fans. The casual fans have somewhat of
- 26:08a blind spot to their organization and specifically
- 26:11speaking to guys like us that will call our organization out
- 26:14when we see something that's just somewhat egregious or, or
- 26:19that we disagree with in a way, you know, And I think there's
- 26:23the casual fans that like aren't as in depth or as knowledgeable
- 26:28that are going to call these teams out.
- 26:30So they're less likely to Boo their own, you know,
- 26:33organization than the guy that left.
- 26:37I don't know, I'm I'm going to go, I'm going to go hot take
- 26:40care. I kind of hate, I kind of hate
- 26:42the tribute thing. I'm I'm all done with the
- 26:45tribute thing unless the guy's like on his final year of
- 26:50playing. Yeah, I'm all done that.
- 26:53That always feels kind of weird. Like let's face it, if Ohtani
- 26:57finishes his career out as a Dodger, which he likely will,
- 27:01and goes into Hall of Fame, which he likely will, I'm going
- 27:04to go out and bet he's going to have a Dodger hat on.
- 27:07And you're the angels that did a weird montage.
- 27:14That, by the way, it wasn't shown at the stadium.
- 27:16It was only shown on social media, which was another weird
- 27:19thing. Like it was reported ahead of
- 27:21the game or ahead of this series that nothing was going to be
- 27:25done for him in terms of like acknowledging it, which I guess
- 27:29is like kind of OK, but you also did do something, but you only
- 27:32showed it on social media. But it's kind of a weird.
- 27:34We've fallen in love with it in sports and I'm I'm all, I'm, I'm
- 27:37all done. Like it used to be a guy's
- 27:40retiring, it's his final tour last year kind of thing.
- 27:45Little tip of the cap kind. Of now, it's like anywhere
- 27:48someone goes that if they, I, I, I understand if you won a
- 27:52championship in your sport, I understand a little bit of that.
- 27:57But yeah, it's weird. Like football never does that.
- 28:00You never see anything like that in football.
- 28:02Basketball is over the top with it.
- 28:06The other thing too that I've always wondered is like, what's
- 28:07the threshold like? Who?
- 28:09Who? If a guy is on a team for X
- 28:12amount of seasons, comes back or, or gets traded or or
- 28:16whatever, and then comes back, like what, what's the threshold?
- 28:22Like what's, what do you have to do?
- 28:24Or like what, what status of player do you have to be?
- 28:27Or what would you have had to have done in your time there to
- 28:29warn it? Because not if that was like,
- 28:31if, if everybody that left and came back.
- 28:33And I'm not saying show, Hey, it's just some other guy that's
- 28:36that's separate. I'm just this is more just
- 28:38talking about the tribute videos, Like if, if any time a
- 28:42guy left and came back to a team he played for, if that happened,
- 28:46if you did a tribute every time that happened, it would just be
- 28:49nothing but tribute videos every time we went to a baseball game.
- 28:52So like. Over it?
- 28:53What class? Over it what?
- 28:55What qualifies as as the threshold for?
- 28:57That if the fan base decides to give this guy standing O and the
- 29:02umpire has, you know, like a, you know, like a an idea that
- 29:07it's happening and he goes and brushes off the plate, you know,
- 29:11helmet comes off and tips like if if it's up to the fan base,
- 29:17that's cool, but like having some kind of video montage thing
- 29:24with music playing. It's weird.
- 29:26It's weird. Unless you won a championship
- 29:28there. I think that's my threshold
- 29:32outside of that, like you left because it's a business.
- 29:37We're not going to honor you and cherish you after you're gone
- 29:41and dominating with our rival. I don't, I don't know, even the
- 29:46ring thing, like I'm, I'm just thinking through like a scenario
- 29:49because like like you're like, I'm just trying to imagine
- 29:54you're like lefty specialist who tosses in like the 6th inning
- 30:01following a starter that's not able to see the line up a third
- 30:05time, who had like maybe 35 appearances in a season, but he
- 30:09won a ring. It's like, are we giving him a
- 30:11tribute to that guy? I don't know.
- 30:13I'm not like, I don't know the answer because I'm sure it's
- 30:16happened. I, I don't know, I'm just
- 30:17playing devil's advocate. It's just, I just think through.
- 30:19I'm over it. I'm over it because it's
- 30:21overused at this point. And like, you know what?
- 30:24I've I've kind of talked myself into it.
- 30:25Good for the angels. Good for the angels for putting
- 30:27your foot down. I love the troll of used to work
- 30:30here. Like, didn't you?
- 30:31Start, didn't you start this segment by saying like it's kind
- 30:34of weird that like they didn't do that.
- 30:36Isn't that what you said or did you say?
- 30:38It felt weird. It felt weird but that all they
- 30:41did was used to work here. Yeah.
- 30:44I feel like if you throw like career stats up as an Angel,
- 30:47like I think that would have been acceptable, like that's he
- 30:50was an impactful player for your organization.
- 30:52And but it when it's all said and done again, when the guy is
- 30:56being inducted into the Hall of Fame, chances are he's wearing
- 30:59Dodger blue. Chances are if there is a
- 31:01statue, it's going to be outside of Dodger Stadium, not Anaheim
- 31:05Angels. If it Los Angeles, Angeles,
- 31:07California. I mean, you could make the and
- 31:10last thing I'll say, yeah. I mean, you could make the case
- 31:12that like if he if he ends up going 5050 this year, wins an
- 31:17MVP and then even if you didn't even didn't do anything for the
- 31:22next like three to Four Seasons, just was like a league average.
- 31:25I He's probably still going in as a Dodger.
- 31:28I agree. Just in this hypothetical
- 31:29situation because like that, I mean, that's a that's a year in
- 31:32and of itself MVP 5050 club and who who knows what they go on to
- 31:38end up doing in the postseason this year.
- 31:40But anyway, time will tell. Speaking of the postseason, I
- 31:48don't have a sound for it. The Tigers.
- 31:50I was looking, I was looking for a little transition sound.
- 31:54That's all I got. Tigers are not dead.
- 31:58We talked last episode about the Cubs not being dead, but hold
- 32:01up, pump the brakes. Detroit would like to be
- 32:04included in that conversation. They are not dead.
- 32:07We are looking at the third best record in the American League
- 32:11since the All Star break entering Wednesday at a mark of
- 32:1423 and 19 on the year. They're a game over 500 at 70
- 32:19and 69. And they're only four and a half
- 32:21back in the wild card. They're seven and three in their
- 32:24last ten. And here's the kicker.
- 32:27Here's the kicker. Who are they?
- 32:29Who are they chasing down in the division?
- 32:33Well, not you. You get what I'm saying in the
- 32:35in the in the in the postseason picture, who also is in their
- 32:38division is what I was saying. Bobby Witt and the Funky Bunch
- 32:42Kensiti. Bobby Witt and the boys.
- 32:45Here's the kicker, the Tig. Looking at the rest of the
- 32:48schedule, The Tigers play the Royals three more times, and
- 32:51then they have nine games against the A's, Rockies and
- 32:55White Sox. The Royals, who have lost seven
- 32:58straight, by the way, entering Wednesday, they play the Twins,
- 33:03who are ahead of them in the division, the Yankees, the
- 33:07Braves. Say what you all about The
- 33:08Braves, it's still a somewhat challenging match up.
- 33:12And then the Guardians. So you'd tell me what's
- 33:18possible, what's within the realm of possibility for the
- 33:20Tigers, Because I'm looking at that.
- 33:22I'm looking at the way they've been playing.
- 33:23And I've especially been looking at the way the Royals been
- 33:26playing. And I'm going it's possible
- 33:32because honestly, because honestly, the way the Red Sox
- 33:35are playing right now, and I hate to say it, but it's just
- 33:37reality. Red Sox may not be much of A
- 33:40threat in this race. Anyway, they're both let me
- 33:44check here. Let me let me confirm the
- 33:48they're. Both 4 1/2 back.
- 33:49Yes, they're both 4 1/2 back 3. And seven in the last 10.
- 33:52No, the Tigers are are, Oh, you're saying the Royals?
- 33:56Royals. Yeah, Royals and Red Sox three
- 33:58and seven in the last 10. But my point about the Red Sox
- 34:02is they're they and the Tigers are both 4 1/2 back.
- 34:06But we're talking about a tale of two different stories here.
- 34:09The Red Sox 4 1/2 back looks a heck of a lot different than the
- 34:13Tigers 4 1/2 back, just solely based on the way that both teams
- 34:17have been playing as of late and entered the month of September.
- 34:19Because the Red Sox look like one of the worst teams in
- 34:22baseball right now. They can't win a series, it
- 34:25seems. And the Tigers are just kind of
- 34:30hanging around. And I would even go a step
- 34:34further to say they're they're playing pretty good ball right
- 34:37now. So you maybe we just in this
- 34:41scenario, we just maybe for the sake of conversation, eliminate
- 34:46the Red Sox as a threat here. You're really just chasing down
- 34:49the Royals at that point. If you can fend off the
- 34:51Mariners, you're just you're just chasing down the old
- 34:56divisional foe in the Royals and you're only four and a half
- 34:59back. And like I said, they.
- 35:00Do have a match up? Still, they they have, they have
- 35:03a three-game series coming up and then, like I said, the 8.
- 35:06Around that deadline. They have 9.
- 35:09The Tigers have nine games against the A's, Rockies and
- 35:12White Sox. So.
- 35:13The Tigers end. Yeah, the Tigers end their final
- 35:16six games, Ray's and White Sox. I mean, those are those are up
- 35:20for grabs. And going back to what's
- 35:24happened since the break, Tigers have the third best team team
- 35:28ERA in baseball since that break at at a clip of 326.
- 35:33And not to mention a guy that I think us and maybe a lot of
- 35:38other people wrote off at least for the rest of this year, just
- 35:41production wise. Spencer Torkelson, since getting
- 35:44recalled on August 17th, has four homers and an OPS of 920.
- 35:48So safe to say, you know what, he's found it.
- 35:53Big, big pat on the back to the Detroit Tigers for doing that.
- 35:57Big pat on the back for recognizing an issue,
- 36:03understanding that it may not be the.
- 36:07I mean, this is a tough pill to swallow.
- 36:10Your first round pick needs to go down and cook a little
- 36:12longer. That's not easy.
- 36:17And you see so many teams across the league that are so reluctant
- 36:20to even bench guys like that, to even sit them down, much less go
- 36:27down for a few weeks and figure things out.
- 36:30I like I'm that's how baseball has been for years, for decades.
- 36:36And all the sudden we're just like, we're so worried about how
- 36:40this markets to the fan base or how this effects jersey sales or
- 36:45how this effects, you know, seats getting filled.
- 36:48It's like it's finally being done in a positive way.
- 36:53Like, I'm real. It's just a job well done all
- 36:56the way around. Tigers did what needed to be
- 36:58done. Torkelson is back, figured
- 37:01things out. Like, that's how it's supposed
- 37:04to go. If a guy struggles, send him
- 37:06down. I love it.
- 37:10Good for Torkelson. I I need to have that's the only
- 37:27breaking news sound that I've I've got so far I need to come
- 37:29up with. Probably a new one, Probably a
- 37:31new. One, no, it's not a new one.
- 37:33That's like, that's like when that's good breaking news.
- 37:36This isn't good breaking news. Well, depends if you're a Mets
- 37:38fan. We were just talking about the
- 37:41the AL wild card race. A little update here.
- 37:44The Sox are on the Red Red Sox. It is are on the verge of
- 37:47getting swept by the New York Mets.
- 37:49It is currently for nothing in the middle of the second.
- 37:51So good stuff, good stuff. Red Sox garbage this team.
- 37:59Either put an alarm out for this.
- 38:01This team, well, when the Mets, the team that we all know how I
- 38:06feel about goes up for nothing in the final game of a series
- 38:11which is headed for a sweep to put you for that much further
- 38:16back in the wild card race in a in a wild card race we were just
- 38:20talking about. I feel like it warranted an
- 38:22update. So I gave you that dead call me
- 38:26back. I'm not going to say it.
- 38:30I'm not going to say it just yet.
- 38:32Say it. I tell you what I tell.
- 38:37Oh, I tell you what. We play the White Sox this
- 38:41weekend. If we lose.
- 38:45If we lose a game. Yeah, Listen to me right now.
- 38:49What do I get? What happens?
- 38:51What do I get? If we lose a game, if the Red
- 38:54Sox lose a game to the White Sox this weekend, it's over.
- 38:59They're dead. They're dead.
- 39:03I need a bigger punishment than this.
- 39:06What's the punishment? Like me, you witnessing me
- 39:09writing off the Red Sox is plenty of punishment enough.
- 39:12What are we talking about? We still got our bet to to
- 39:15settle here soon. I don't even want to talk about.
- 39:17I don't want to talk about that. Super excited about.
- 39:20I don't want to talk about that. I do, however, want to talk
- 39:23about the Oakland A's. Talk about a team that's playing
- 39:26better than the Red Sox. Again, looking at looking at
- 39:32record since the break, talking about how the Tigers have the
- 39:35third best in the AL since the break.
- 39:37The Oakland A's have the second best record in the AL since the
- 39:39break, 24 and 17 on the year. In case you kind of lost
- 39:44straight, you've been so hyper focused on how bad the White Sox
- 39:47have been as the as the worst team in baseball.
- 39:51The the the reigning champ of that title, if you will, the
- 39:55Oakland A's on the year 61 and 78.
- 39:58They're 14 1/2 games back in the division.
- 40:02And 13 1/2 back in the wild card, which I'll be honest with
- 40:05you like it's it's not good. That's respectable.
- 40:08It's middle of the pack. It's not terrible.
- 40:11I mean, the White Sox. What?
- 40:14It's not middle of the pack, but.
- 40:16Yeah, no, yeah. Let's let's walk that back.
- 40:18And me just saying that's not terrible.
- 40:20Let's walk that back too. It is.
- 40:21It is terrible. But comparatively, let's let's
- 40:27just let's have this conversation through the lens of
- 40:29how it compares the White Sox. I'm pretty sure the White Sox
- 40:33were 14 1/2 games back in the division by the end of like May,
- 40:38middle of May, probably. So comparatively, like they're
- 40:44doing all right, the Oakland A's doing all right.
- 40:48On a more serious note, they've. Won 30 more games than the White
- 40:52Sox. That's what I'm saying talking
- 40:58about team ERA, team OPS. I was, I was in this real like
- 41:01team ERA team OPS mode today. So forgive me if forgive me if
- 41:05I've I've mentioned that for like every team in the league
- 41:07today. That's OK.
- 41:08But I was curious because I went back to the break.
- 41:11That seems to be kind of when when the narrative I I would
- 41:15feel like shifted for the A's little bit.
- 41:17People are looking around going, whoa, yeah, I was included.
- 41:19Like hold on. Like the A's actually aren't
- 41:21kind of that bad. Yeah, But since the break, 9th
- 41:25best team ERA in baseball 385 and the 10th best team OPS in
- 41:31baseball since the break at 7:48.
- 41:33I'll be honest with you, I would have pegged if you would have
- 41:35given me a guess, I would have pegged the team OPS to be a
- 41:39little higher than the team ERA. But I think I think you can
- 41:43credit a little bit of the ERA effort to and certainly there's
- 41:48more metrics to look at, but Osvaldo Vito has been throwing
- 41:52it very well as of late. His last five, just looking at
- 41:57his last five starts, his last one was a little bit of a
- 42:02stinker. Went five and a third against
- 42:04the Mariners, gave up four runs. But prior to that, the the four
- 42:08starts he had before that had only given up three combined
- 42:10runs had held the the Jays scoreless over across or through
- 42:16six. And then the Giants held them
- 42:21scoreless through 6 and then threw well against the Rays and
- 42:27the Reds. So I mean, he's been he's been a
- 42:29a a bright spot for the team as of late.
- 42:31And talk about bright spots. Lauren Lawrence Butler.
- 42:35I don't, I don't feel like we've, we've talked about
- 42:37enough, maybe even at all honestly to this point.
- 42:40Not at all. That's on us.
- 42:42Like that's, that's definitely an accountability thing.
- 42:45You're raining ale Player of the week, I believe, if I'm not
- 42:52mistaken, has recorded an extra base hits.
- 42:55According to Baseball Reference, has recorded an extra base hit
- 42:57in each of his last eight games, which is tied for the longest
- 43:00streak by any age player since at least 19.
- 43:04O1 would love. To know that name.
- 43:07Would love to know that name. Which And by the way, I think he
- 43:10has like 8 jacks in his last 11. Games.
- 43:13Well, he had three in that one. Game.
- 43:15Yeah, the three Homer game where?
- 43:16He yelled. Which was I was about that.
- 43:19I was hyped. Did you see that?
- 43:22Just like a lion's roar came out of them.
- 43:26I'm telling you man. They bang, dude, they bang.
- 43:29That offense like which I guess we should be saying that that
- 43:34staff because like I said, better ERA or better team ERA
- 43:38since the break than than OPS. So.
- 43:42I like, I like what they got going.
- 43:44And one take, I don't remember where it was.
- 43:50I think it was MOB Network, but they talked about when they go
- 43:53into Sacramento that the ball flies there.
- 43:58Apparently it's a tiny ballpark. It's like when the Blue Jays
- 44:01were in Buffalo. Sees what, like 7000 people?
- 44:05Yeah, 9000 people. So like they're going to put up
- 44:08some numbers, dude, it's going to be interesting.
- 44:11You're. Going to have to take it with a
- 44:12grain of salt. I don't know how much I I agree
- 44:15with you like it. I'm sure the numbers are going
- 44:16to be crazy, but I. Think you're going to have some
- 44:19guys that put up numbers. I don't think this is what
- 44:23they're doing. Overall, I don't think this is
- 44:26sustainable. No, no, for sure, for sure.
- 44:28I don't think you know they're going to be top ten in ERA and
- 44:33OPS moving forward. But well, I, I mean, the thing
- 44:36you I think you got to look at with that narrative of like, OK,
- 44:39is this going to be something that's more long term, something
- 44:42that has potential to be sustainable is how long they're
- 44:45they're there. Because as we know, the whole
- 44:46like Vegas thing is still kind of like, who knows?
- 44:51So like if they're there beyond the what are they supposed to be
- 44:56there three years? Sacramento 252627 Or is it just
- 45:022526? I thought it was just 2526 but I
- 45:05could be wrong. Well, I mean, if they're there
- 45:07beyond whatever, whatever it ends up being two years, if
- 45:10they're there beyond that mark, then you could look at this and
- 45:13go, OK, like you have a chance to, to develop some guys to
- 45:17really pump some, some numbers here and use that to your
- 45:22advantage. I, I don't know what that
- 45:24translates to, but like, it's better than, it's better than
- 45:27what they've got going on now. Bobby, like 61 wins at the
- 45:32moment. We, we were just talking about a
- 45:35few weeks ago. How like, hey, you know what?
- 45:37That's pretty decent, decent for the Washington Nationals.
- 45:40They're at 62. We're pretty kind of bummed
- 45:44about what the Pirates have fallen back to after all the
- 45:47hype. They're at 65 wins.
- 45:50So like if you're hanging out in this crowd, this is I'm
- 45:55impressed, I'm impressed. I'll say it, I'll say it.
- 46:00I like Rooker, like Laday, I like Langelier's Butler is looks
- 46:07like he could he could be a real deal.
- 46:09Like you have some names that like could potentially be stat
- 46:14leaders, could potentially win player of the month next year.
- 46:19Like there's guys that are capable of doing that.
- 46:22Player of the Week under under Butler's belt, as I mentioned.
- 46:25So check that box. Whit Merrifield.
- 46:32Let's talk. Let's talk the drama that is
- 46:36Whit Merrifield. And watch again while you're
- 46:38talking. On Tuesday in the Braves game
- 46:42against the Rockies, was hit by a pit hit hit in the head by a
- 46:46pitch from Rockies relief pitcher Jeff Criswell, 94 to the
- 46:52Dome. Did not look good.
- 46:54I mean, those those kinds of things never look good.
- 46:56But was not happy. He got up kind of barking a
- 47:02little bit at Criswell. And I can understand, like I,
- 47:09I'm not going to sit there and, and, and condemn the guy for,
- 47:13for maybe being caught up in the heat of the moment a little bit,
- 47:16kind of barking back, being like, dude, look, are you
- 47:19serious right now? Like, come on, zoom out a little
- 47:22bit. Fast forward to the post game
- 47:25presser and he had some comments on on the the state of the game,
- 47:30the state of pitching today and just some general thoughts on
- 47:37the amount of hit by pitches that he both he and I think the
- 47:42league seem to encounter these days.
- 47:44He said the guys are throwing as hard as they can and they don't
- 47:48care where the ball goes. It's driving me nuts and I hate
- 47:51the game. I hate where the game is at
- 47:53right now with that, it's just ridiculous where the game is at
- 47:56right now or no. He he said that the, the way
- 48:00pitchers are throwing now, there's no remorse or regard for
- 48:04throwing up and end. Guys are throwing hard as they
- 48:07can and they don't care where the ball goes.
- 48:10He says BS, you can't hit a guy that which I this was
- 48:14interesting. This was interesting.
- 48:16He says BS, you can't hit, which I think he got jumbled up in his
- 48:20words, but he said you can't hit a guy anymore back.
- 48:22There's No Fear in that. Oh, if I hit this guy, then our
- 48:25guy is going to get hit. That's not the game anymore.
- 48:28Pitchers don't have to hit anymore, so they don't have to
- 48:30stand in the box. And from the article that I was,
- 48:36I was scurrying through. He's got, he's got a point in,
- 48:43in regards to the velocity. According to Baseball America,
- 48:47back in 2008, the average fastball was 91.9.
- 48:52Today or last year, I guess the last data they have available
- 48:56from a full season average fastball was a 94.2.
- 49:00So certainly a few ticks up and this is what I thought was
- 49:05interesting as well. Of the top 15 seasons in MLB
- 49:10history in terms of hitch hit by pitch rates track since 1884,
- 49:15seven of them have occurred in the last seven seasons, 2018 to
- 49:202024. Which goes back to what we were
- 49:24talking about is how there's a a regressed focus or just utter
- 49:31disregard, I think for the art of pitching and it's become all
- 49:36about throwing. Show me the lie anywhere.
- 49:41I couldn't agree more of wit. Couldn't agree more dude.
- 49:47It's there's so many different names that are coming out and
- 49:53saying this like this isn't just like old head, like give it the
- 49:58times. No, this is like our game is is
- 50:03in certain aspects unbearable. And I don't disagree.
- 50:11I do think that get that, you know, the bat down shoulder turn
- 50:18instead of the the head down when you go head down, you know,
- 50:22like you're in trouble. Square that up on the back.
- 50:26You know, we're taught that at a young age.
- 50:27But I digress. I'm going to sit here and say
- 50:32that I agree with everything you said.
- 50:34I really do struggle to wrap my head around certain aspects of
- 50:41the game, man. And when you're talking about
- 50:43just like spin rate and movement and throwing it as hard as you
- 50:47can, the art of pitching has absolutely been lost.
- 50:53And this Greg Maddox documentary that is almost, I can't find it,
- 50:58by the way, impossible to find. Job well done there, MLB.
- 51:04But it comes out at the right time because, like, that is the
- 51:06definition of art of pitching. And there's got to be something
- 51:11that gets back to that. You could talk about it in all
- 51:15different aspects. We've we've talked about the
- 51:17number of injuries we've like there's, there's a correlation
- 51:20here. Talk about hit by pitches,
- 51:22injuries, strikeouts. Like we fall in love with
- 51:26certain things and then we just like over invest in it.
- 51:31And that's all the product is now.
- 51:34Then there's no other aspects to the game.
- 51:38It's made it unbearable in certain ways.
- 51:40So now you got to tweak other things instead of having coaches
- 51:46or or philosophies change with your organization.
- 51:52Now we're just changing rules to create more offense.
- 51:55When it's like, well, in reality, like you could probably
- 52:00have some guys just relax and it's hard.
- 52:02It's a hard thing to say. Like it's, you know, hey, don't,
- 52:05don't throw as hard as you can. Hey, don't swing as hard as you
- 52:08can. Like, where do you draw the
- 52:11line? I don't know, but the art of
- 52:13pitching is almost gone, and you could slide that into some other
- 52:19things. There's a ripple effect there,
- 52:21because the art of catching is pretty much gone, too.
- 52:26Yeah, I just, I, I just think the game is getting and yes,
- 52:31I'm, I'm talking about like the legislation of the game and, and
- 52:35the implementation of these new rules and, and, and pitch
- 52:39clocks. And, but I'm not necessarily
- 52:41talking about that. I'm, I'm talking more about the
- 52:42approach that I was mentioning in terms of how these programs,
- 52:49these coaches, these instructors really at all levels of the
- 52:54game. I feel like are the, the
- 52:59approach specifically to pitching as we're talking about
- 53:01is it's just being nerfed and you're eliminating nuance and
- 53:07you're eliminating the art that we're talking about to where, I
- 53:13don't know, call it like even just 10 years ago, pitching
- 53:18inside was still like an important element of pitching.
- 53:22Being able to establish the inner half as a pitcher and to
- 53:26establish that as your plate and not the hitter's plate.
- 53:30Like that is your plate as the pitcher.
- 53:32Being able to establish the inside the inner half was vital,
- 53:37but now it's less about like, well, let's just like spot up
- 53:42where where we can as best we can and just hope that we can we
- 53:47can blow it by the guy. There's no like, hey, let's
- 53:51approach the inner half as something that we can use later
- 53:54in the at bat to our advantage. If we establish the inner half,
- 53:57we back them up a little bit and then we can we can toss in some
- 54:02something slow on the outer half, get them lunging, get them
- 54:05reaching, and that's we we only at bat.
- 54:07No, it's just like, well, let's just let's just dot it up.
- 54:11Let's let's light up the gun and we can try to throw inside.
- 54:17We can set up inside, but if it doesn't end up inside, if it
- 54:20ends up over the plate, the heart of the plate, that's fine.
- 54:23We'll just try to we'll we'll try to buzz one O 1 by him next
- 54:26pitch or next to bat. It's like no, there.
- 54:29You have to the the the nuance and and the the the the paints
- 54:34and the artfulness have to remain in pitching.
- 54:38Otherwise you're just it's just a competition to see you can
- 54:40throw the hardest that's. It, I mean, I watched Andrew
- 54:43Heaney last night, who I'm pretty sure tops out at like
- 54:469091 with his fastball. I watched him carve the Yankees
- 54:51up. When it's a lot of change ups
- 54:53and curve balls and you're spotting these and you're
- 54:55throwing them for strikes and you make them look like strikes,
- 54:58you're able to do that. Your 91 is going to look a lot
- 55:03harder than 91. But if all you're doing is
- 55:08rearing back and trying to throw 97 over and over again, hitters
- 55:12are good enough to recognize that.
- 55:15But if it's a Max effort to the point where now we're we've lost
- 55:19control. Now we're talking about a
- 55:22ridiculous amount of injuries. It's like, how about you learn
- 55:26how to pitch so when you can touch that 97, which you should
- 55:32be able to do every once in a while, it's going to mean that
- 55:36much more. If we're just shoving 97 at your
- 55:39face, 4550 * a game and you have no idea where it's going to go
- 55:45and you're just like banking on it doing that.
- 55:48I don't know, man. And like, we're in love with
- 55:51what Ben Joyce just did, throwing a pitch at 105.
- 55:54It's like, at what cost? Perceived velocity is a real
- 56:01thing. If you're not familiar with like
- 56:02what that is or how it how it benefits a pitcher, look into
- 56:06that. You'll you'll learn a lot and
- 56:08you'll realize that velocity isn't everything.
- 56:10Despite what you may hear from these like pitching grooves,
- 56:14it's not everything. And to use an extreme example,
- 56:19the fact that Rich Hill is currently pitching a Major
- 56:23League Baseball game, say what you will about like the value of
- 56:27it or like how effective it really it is, the fact that he's
- 56:30he's record fact he is recording Major League outs.
- 56:36He's recording outs as a pitcher at the age of 44 if I'm not
- 56:42mistaken, at the big league level.
- 56:45Bartolo Cologne. Jamie Moyer.
- 56:47And, and I understand that the same like the, the, the amount
- 56:50or the list, I should say is, is much shorter for guys like that.
- 56:53But it just goes to show you that like there are more ways to
- 56:57succeed at the big league level on the mound than just going up
- 57:01there and throwing it as hard as you can.
- 57:04That it's just that simple. It's, it doesn't, you don't have
- 57:07to get all technical with like the, the science and the data
- 57:11behind pitching. I I know that that's the
- 57:13temptation because the numbers are like right there.
- 57:16But if you just look at it simply and objectively, you can
- 57:20recognize that it it doesn't necessarily matter how hard you
- 57:26can throw if you are creative enough and savvy enough as a
- 57:29pitcher and intelligent enough to get out elsewhere.
- 57:35Yeah, that's weird. Let your defense do something.
- 57:40Crazy. Anyway, oh, did you say nuts
- 57:45speaking? Speaking of nuts, the White Sox,
- 57:54I mean, I know we've already talked a little bit about them.
- 57:56Oh, we talked. We talked about them a good bit
- 57:59in previous episodes and even a little bit on this episode.
- 58:02But let's let's talk about this play in Baltimore.
- 58:09I watched it live. It was so bad that you texted me
- 58:12and like very rarely like it. It takes a lot for for those of
- 58:16you that are wondering which you may not be, but in case you are,
- 58:19it takes a lot for Nate or I to text the other about like a play
- 58:23real time. Usually it's just like, oh, like
- 58:26we'll we'll catch up like in our little like pre pod chat that we
- 58:30have a couple times a week. Like well, oh, did you see that
- 58:32player? Whatever.
- 58:33Like no, he literally texted me seconds after it happened.
- 58:36I'm like oh boy, this should be good.
- 58:38And I pulled it up and I'm like, I'm surprised, but at the same
- 58:43time, this is just on brand. It's so bad, dude.
- 58:50It's so bad. And especially when you see it
- 58:52like multiple times, like there was a play the inning before.
- 58:57And if you haven't seen it, it's the collision that from an Eloy
- 59:01Jimenez pop up behind third base where it's that territory that
- 59:08like a shortstop could come in. The left fielder is coming in
- 59:11third base is like working straight back And Vargas at
- 59:16third base crashes into Benintendi, catches a shoulder
- 59:21of the eye and like immediately has a black eye.
- 59:24Ball drops all three runs score because there's two outs like
- 59:28miserable. But the inning before you watch
- 59:31like Benintendi and and Luis Robert in left center kind of
- 59:36make a a little collision where there's a lack of communication.
- 59:41There's there's so many things that and if if you're younger
- 59:48and you just started watching baseball, like I'm not trying to
- 59:51tell you to, to like not fall in love with this game, but there's
- 59:58so many things, There's so many intricacies.
- 1:00:01And like, as, as you and I growing up, I, we're not going
- 1:00:05to sit here and say that we're the greatest gift to earth when
- 1:00:08it comes to physical ability as a baseball player.
- 1:00:11We both played college baseball and I think we consider
- 1:00:13ourselves lucky to do that. But like we work like you work
- 1:00:17on certain fundamental things. And when you're watching
- 1:00:22millions of dollars being put towards a product on national
- 1:00:28television, and you're watching such an absence of those
- 1:00:34intricacies, such an absence of those practiced nuances to what
- 1:00:42makes our game what it is, it's really, really hard.
- 1:00:48And you're talking about little kids at four and five years old
- 1:00:53being taught to call for a ball. You're talking about Little
- 1:00:57League into middle school, maybe even high school of infielders.
- 1:01:03You can venture back there. But overall, like if you hear
- 1:01:07the outfielder, they take priority.
- 1:01:10They're coming in. There's little things, dude.
- 1:01:13And I'm not just going to harp on the White Sox because you can
- 1:01:16watch any game and you can see some pretty questionable things
- 1:01:20happening of guys hitting wrong parts of bags when they're
- 1:01:24running bases. Like there's a lot of small
- 1:01:27things that I feel like aren't being coached or practiced at
- 1:01:31the moment. And when you're the White Sox
- 1:01:34having one of the worst seasons ever, it's just going to be
- 1:01:40blown up and, and put in, put it under a microscope.
- 1:01:44And that to me like that, I turned the game off, dude.
- 1:01:48I was like, I'm not, I can't watch this.
- 1:01:51It's I, I, I think you're on with something.
- 1:01:54I think when it rains, it pours. And like, that's why I said I, I
- 1:01:57was surprised. It's just how bad the play was.
- 1:02:00But I, I wasn't surprised that the play happened and it go, it
- 1:02:07just go. You're talking about the, the
- 1:02:08lack of fundamentals that the very apparent lack of
- 1:02:11fundamentals. It goes back to what we were
- 1:02:13talking about that bit I heard that Tim Kirchen said recently
- 1:02:17where he's just like these guy. And I know I've mentioned it
- 1:02:19multiple times in the past month or so, but it it rings true and
- 1:02:23it continues to ring true especially for the Chicago White
- 1:02:26Sox. And that you talk about these
- 1:02:29players being incredible athletes.
- 1:02:32They can do. They can do on a baseball field
- 1:02:35what just about nobody else can do or has ever been able to do
- 1:02:40on a baseball field. Yeah, but they're stupid.
- 1:02:44The, the, the baseball IQ is lacking or non existent.
- 1:02:51It's they, they just rely on raw talent, raw skills and that gets
- 1:02:56them far. But when the going gets tough,
- 1:03:01when there's a, when there's a, a key play in a, in a vital game
- 1:03:06in the second-half of the season, that could potentially
- 1:03:09make or break your chances of getting into a postseason game.
- 1:03:13And you're looking like a deer in the headlights because you
- 1:03:15don't work on those fundamentals.
- 1:03:16There's not an emphasis put on those fundamentals.
- 1:03:19It really looks bad. And it more often than not, with
- 1:03:23the way baseball works, it'll come back to bite you.
- 1:03:27And when you're a team like the White Sox, it happens night
- 1:03:31after night after night. And it's a big reason why they
- 1:03:34are where they are. And like when you, when you can
- 1:03:37sit here and, and joke about like the, the way the White Sox
- 1:03:41season has gone, you can't just sit there and say, oh, they,
- 1:03:45they must be leading the league in strikeouts.
- 1:03:47They must be leading the league in this.
- 1:03:49They must be leading the league in this.
- 1:03:51They, you know what I mean? Like it's got to be about all of
- 1:03:55these small fundamentals. Like when you care about that
- 1:03:59little stuff, there's going to be a ripple effect on in a in a
- 1:04:03positive way towards other things.
- 1:04:05So overall, like brutal play. I feel bad for Vargas.
- 1:04:11You can tell there's like a running joke of these guys, like
- 1:04:14their collage of pictures of his face just staring off into the
- 1:04:19distance being miserable. Whether it's in the dugout or
- 1:04:23wherever. It's like, I do feel for the
- 1:04:25guy, but damn, dude. Like it.
- 1:04:29It was hard to watch Grady Sizemore with his first career
- 1:04:35ejection in this game as well. I saw that as as a player,
- 1:04:40obviously as a manager, as. Well, and I see the the UMP
- 1:04:43dropped an FU to him like a little little odd.
- 1:04:50I mean, got his face back. Cut the guy some like I think it
- 1:04:54was because the UMP blew the call.
- 1:04:56Like I didn't, I didn't see what what prompted it, but pretty
- 1:04:59sure I was reading or saw that it was because he just outright
- 1:05:02blew the call and Grady cut like we got this.
- 1:05:07I mean, for all intents and purposes, you got this babyface
- 1:05:09manager coming out. Yeah, be like, dude, clean it
- 1:05:13up. And the guy's like F you.
- 1:05:15It's like, how does that make sense?
- 1:05:17Yeah, what? I don't know, man.
- 1:05:21It's it's the tale as old as time, the umpires having some
- 1:05:28delusions of grandeur. They want to have their imprint
- 1:05:30on the game. Yeah, and 0 accountability to
- 1:05:33follow suit. That's the worst part of it.
- 1:05:38Let us look ahead to the weekend series to watch lettuce, lettuce
- 1:05:45and tomato. Look ahead to the weekend
- 1:05:49series. Watch Nate.
- 1:05:49I think you've you've pretty much got it, got it nailed.
- 1:05:53I think we have got a little bit of an old school match up this
- 1:05:57weekend. I mean, we got some good
- 1:05:58baseball while you're pulling that up.
- 1:06:00We've got the the guards and the Dodgers.
- 1:06:03Matthew Boyd's throwing on Friday.
- 1:06:05Matthew Boyd, by the way, I don't know if you've looked
- 1:06:06Matthew Boyd's been throwing awfully well since since making
- 1:06:13his his debut D backs and and Stroh's we got the.
- 1:06:25Oh, you don't have it. You don't have a specific
- 1:06:26series. You're just kind of rolling
- 1:06:28through. No, no, no.
- 1:06:28I was waiting for you to pull up.
- 1:06:29You were series. Because I I think you're right.
- 1:06:31I think that's probably the one to watch.
- 1:06:35Yeah, I mean. Twins.
- 1:06:36Twins. Royals.
- 1:06:38It's a good one. Say what you will about the
- 1:06:42Giants, but they're they're at on the road in San Diego versus
- 1:06:46Padres. Might be a little interesting
- 1:06:48which by the way I saw super random side note I saw Darren
- 1:06:52Ruff who was on that like super fluky 100 plus win giants team
- 1:06:58remember from a few. Years back, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:00Yeah, Darren Ruff, he's like I I saw he there was like a a
- 1:07:05welcome coach graphic on social. He's on he's like some assistant
- 1:07:10coach now, like for some college team.
- 1:07:12I think so I'm like, hey, good for you man.
- 1:07:13Didn't even realize he just like.
- 1:07:15Tough. Dropped out of the league or
- 1:07:17whatever, but you know, hey, good for you, good for you and.
- 1:07:21Brutal, brutal. Speaking of brutal, you get the
- 1:07:26New York Yankees going to Chicago this weekend.
- 1:07:30I think if you just. Yeah, yeah, that's correct.
- 1:07:42I know they drive me crazy too. More so just like a baseball
- 1:07:51historical cool thing, you know what I mean?
- 1:07:53You got to see Dodgers in New York this year.
- 1:07:56So the Yankees in Wrigley is just a cool sight to see.
- 1:08:00That'll start Friday. It's a three-game set.
- 1:08:02Obviously. You got Luis Heel going against
- 1:08:06Javier Assad, game one, Game 2, Clark Schmidt coming back off
- 1:08:11the aisle for the first time going against Jordan Wicks.
- 1:08:15And then I would say Game 3 is probably the one you want to
- 1:08:19jump in on, although it is the first Sunday of of football, so
- 1:08:25that's a tough one for everybody.
- 1:08:26But it's a day game. It's Gerrit Cole going against
- 1:08:29Jamison Taillon. That'd be a good one.
- 1:08:37Could be a good one. So good series if you're just
- 1:08:41like, you know, a baseball nerd wanting to see these jerseys in
- 1:08:44this ballpark that you haven't gotten to see in a while.
- 1:08:49Classic. Not that you want to necessarily
- 1:08:51watch amazing baseball 'cause you won't.
- 1:08:56Classic. Yeah, I'm going to have my eye
- 1:08:59on that D backs strobe series. That'll be a that'll be some
- 1:09:03quality baseball. All right, let's wrap it up with
- 1:09:07a game here and then we'll get out of here for the week.
- 1:09:12What? What do you want to do?
- 1:09:13You want to go? You just want to go a little,
- 1:09:16name that player, say, say the name, we'll say the name game.
- 1:09:21Say the name game start out what?
- 1:09:23What we decided one retired, one active to start it off.
- 1:09:27Yeah. I'll take retired.
- 1:09:28I took active last game. Take active cannot be first
- 1:09:31round cannot be a name that we have mentioned 2D. 2D. 2D.
- 1:09:42All right, I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to present a
- 1:09:44challenge here. Our best is 4.
- 1:09:51Let's. Try for you like to do this, I
- 1:09:53just let's try for three. Well, the first one's a wasp.
- 1:09:56So that's fine. So we got 2 guesses in theory.
- 1:09:59I mean we'll, we'll take it to the 10 if we need to.
- 1:10:01I don't think we need all 10. But let's shoot for three here.
- 1:10:04Let's shoot for the stars. Why not, huh?
- 1:10:06OK, got my guy. All right, you got active.
- 1:10:12I'm going retired. I got my guy.
- 1:10:15OK. All right, 321 Randy Johnson,
- 1:10:23say the name. I blinked.
- 1:10:25I blinked. I blinked.
- 1:10:26I blinked. You had the guy I.
- 1:10:27Had it, I had it. Oh my bad, I had it.
- 1:10:32That's the integrity of the game.
- 1:10:34I had. It I lost his version, I lost
- 1:10:38his. First name, That's on me.
- 1:10:40That's on me, that's on me. Get out.
- 1:10:43I had his first name. I I I lost the first name.
- 1:10:45I had the last name get. Out of here, restart.
- 1:10:50You're like, I don't boot you from this call.
- 1:10:52That's fair. That's fair.
- 1:10:54That's. Fair.
- 1:10:54Well, now I got. Man, I was feeling good about
- 1:10:56that Peck. Now I got to figure out somebody
- 1:10:58else. All right.
- 1:11:00Oh man. I I would have said the wrong
- 1:11:04first name and it would it would have not been good.
- 1:11:06I'll still stay on the name though.
- 1:11:07Because there's like a 2 second delay I had, I always have to
- 1:11:10wait for your guest. So I'm like and you didn't say
- 1:11:16anything. I gave you ample time to.
- 1:11:18Say I know I lost the first name.
- 1:11:20That's on me. That's on me.
- 1:11:22All right, let's turn it back all.
- 1:11:24Right. It's it's actually funny that I
- 1:11:26lost the first name. You'll see why.
- 1:11:31OK, that makes it more comical. Let's go.
- 1:11:38All right, I got a guy. OK, all right, three, hold on.
- 1:11:44I got to get my right sounds here. 321 Super Jones.
- 1:11:53See what's funny? Your name's Kyle.
- 1:11:57Oh, thanks, Yeah. Oh, so you went with the same?
- 1:12:00Guy. Yeah, I went with the same guy.
- 1:12:01I just I I blanked on his first name.
- 1:12:04I that's it's it was a split second thing.
- 1:12:06It happens. It happens to the best of us.
- 1:12:09Let's move past it. You said Chipper Jones.
- 1:12:13Chipper Jones, Chipper Jones and Kyle Tucker.
- 1:12:15All right. Can we do this in two guesses?
- 1:12:17Can we do this in two guesses? I'm not going to lie, I'm I'm
- 1:12:21still a little frazzled from from you just I get quite
- 1:12:24literally leaving me out to dry. I get that.
- 1:12:27Unbelievable. I understand that.
- 1:12:29All right. Chipper Jones and Kyle Tucker.
- 1:12:32Let's think here, Chipper Jones and Kyle Tucker.
- 1:12:49And I got a name I just, I don't know, doesn't feel great but.
- 1:12:57I also have a name and I'm kind of feeling the same way.
- 1:12:59So you know what? Let's just let's go with it.
- 1:13:01All right? 321 Julio Bagwell.
- 1:13:08OK, All right. We always, we always end up in
- 1:13:11like the 90s. Yeah, we do.
- 1:13:13I know. All right, can we do it on this
- 1:13:183rd guest? This would be a record.
- 1:13:20This would be a record. Julio Franco, come on.
- 1:13:23That's a tough one, I told you. I mean, so is mine, but at least
- 1:13:28it was you can you can build a bridge from that I mean I.
- 1:13:33Think it. Was Julio Franco?
- 1:13:34Is he? A right fielder for the Braves.
- 1:13:39No, that's that's valid point. Yeah.
- 1:13:43There's really no connection other than the fact that he was
- 1:13:44an Astro. That was there was 0 connection
- 1:13:47to the Braves. That's why I didn't feel great
- 1:13:49about it. But OK.
- 1:13:51Who? Julio Franco and Jeff Bagwell
- 1:13:59still in the same boat here? We're still in the same boat.
- 1:14:03This is tough. I mean, I got a guy, I guess,
- 1:14:15Julio, a whole lot of logic here.
- 1:14:18Julio Franco and Chef Bagwell. No, I don't like it.
- 1:14:30I'm moving on, moving past that one.
- 1:14:42This might not be the game where we set our set our record here
- 1:14:44with my friend. Probably not.
- 1:14:45This could be a tough one. All right, well, let's take the
- 1:14:48pressure off ourselves and if we're not going to go 3, then
- 1:14:50let's just. Just try to get a.
- 1:14:52Just try to get a dub. I thought.
- 1:14:53I thought we got greedy there for a SEC.
- 1:14:54We did. We did.
- 1:14:55Let's get. Let's recalibrate here.
- 1:14:56All right. Jeff Bagwell, Julio Franco.
- 1:15:05Yeah. I don't like it.
- 1:15:06I don't like. It I'm with you, I'm with.
- 1:15:08You man, is there any crossover? Is there any crossover?
- 1:15:19Dude, I got nothing. I have nothing, dude, I'm just
- 1:15:34going to have to. I may just have to throw
- 1:15:36something out just to like get us out of the out of the the the
- 1:15:40ditch here I got. Do what you got to do.
- 1:15:43I don't have a lot of it's just a thing.
- 1:15:46It's just a name that came to mind that kind of has a tie with
- 1:15:49one of these teams, but I didn't find anything connecting.
- 1:16:00Is there not a player that played for the the Braves and
- 1:16:03the Astros? Sure there is.
- 1:16:04Sure there is. Like, has it ever happened in
- 1:16:07the history of the game? Because I cannot think of one
- 1:16:09right now. I'm sure there.
- 1:16:11I'm sure there has. I got nothing, dude.
- 1:16:26Can we get like a phone, your friend in the chat or something
- 1:16:29like can somebody like just point us in the direction?
- 1:16:36All right, I'm just going to throw a name out.
- 1:16:37I'm going to throw a name out. That's kind of what I'm doing
- 1:16:39so. This is this is this is strategy
- 1:16:42more than anything. This isn't trying to make a
- 1:16:44connection off the last two picks.
- 1:16:45This is what I'm going with. All right, three.
- 1:16:47This will be our third guess. 321 Nolan Ryan.
- 1:16:57That's. We can work with that, actually.
- 1:17:00Yeah, we can definitely work with that.
- 1:17:03Can we? Something pretty blatantly
- 1:17:09obvious in common amongst the two of them.
- 1:17:15So that's three guesses. This will be our 4th, Lance
- 1:17:17Berkman and Nolan Ryan. I've got a guy.
- 1:17:23I have got a guy. All right, you got a guy.
- 1:17:27I got a guy. I got a guy.
- 1:17:29I don't feel good about any of this.
- 1:17:30I this is a great this is a great I'm going to pat myself on
- 1:17:34the back here. This is a great bounce back from
- 1:17:36from just throwing a name out there to making a connection.
- 1:17:41This is oh beautiful chef's kiss 4th pick 321 Nathan Nevaldi you
- 1:17:57went the. You went the Ranger days.
- 1:17:59I went. To Texas, boy, you know I went
- 1:18:01to literally. Houston days.
- 1:18:02They were both Astros. Nate Baldy.
- 1:18:06Currently in Astro. Was Lance Berkman in a a Ranger?
- 1:18:13No. Didn't I say I said Texas?
- 1:18:14Did I say? Did I say Ranger?
- 1:18:16Houston's still in Texas. That's what I'm saying.
- 1:18:20Well, I, I was talking, I was, I was going theme, the theme of
- 1:18:24Texas there. And I'm pretty sure, I'm pretty
- 1:18:26sure, I'm pretty sure Ivaldi's from where Nolan Ryan's from.
- 1:18:32I. Don't know where Nolan Ryan's
- 1:18:33from? I oh, I'm so ashamed that I
- 1:18:36know. It's like right there on the tip
- 1:18:37of my tongue. Maybe not Alvin, I thought.
- 1:18:51Wasn't it from Alvin? Allen.
- 1:18:55Alvin. I think that I've heard of an
- 1:18:58Allen, TX. Never heard of an Alvin, TX.
- 1:19:00Alvin attended Alvin high School native ALDI.
- 1:19:04Yeah, they're I'm pretty sure they are from same area.
- 1:19:06So that was a great bounce back on my part anyway.
- 1:19:11And then just lump in the fact that Lance Bergman played played
- 1:19:14for the Astros and wasn't he also an A Texas guy too?
- 1:19:18I don't know if he was a Ranger. I'm not talking about the
- 1:19:22Rangers. I'm talking Texas.
- 1:19:23He's born in Waco, TX. I, I mean, that's the best pick
- 1:19:26I, I think I've ever had. That's the best pick I've ever
- 1:19:29had. Berlander's really not that
- 1:19:30crazy, by the way. My.
- 1:19:33Pick is from Texas, as are Nolan Ryan and And who's the other
- 1:19:38guy? Nolan Ryan and.
- 1:19:41Lance Berkman. And Lance Berkman and.
- 1:19:44They know where people are from. Well, that speaks to the degree
- 1:19:48of of effectiveness of my pick and.
- 1:19:51Fireballer for the Astros. Justin Verlander, fireballer for
- 1:19:56the Oh my, are you not? Hold on, we need to take a quick
- 1:20:00little. Ryan was an Astro.
- 1:20:02Lance Berkman was an Astro. Justin Verlander, Nastro.
- 1:20:06Nolan Ryan was also a Ranger is literally right there.
- 1:20:09You can see the picture, the bloody lip picture.
- 1:20:12Lance Berkman. I know, but listen to what I'm
- 1:20:15saying. Nolan Ryan played for two teams
- 1:20:18in Texas. Nolan Ryan, also born in Texas.
- 1:20:22Lance Berkman played for team in Texas.
- 1:20:25Lance Berkman, also born in Texas.
- 1:20:27Nady, Evaldi. Played.
- 1:20:28For team in Texas, Nady Evaldi, born in Texas.
- 1:20:32What are we talking about? Zero percent chance you chose
- 1:20:35native Evaldi thinking Lance Berkman was also from Texas.
- 1:20:39I was 97% sure he was born in Texas because I'm there's pretty
- 1:20:44sure part of the equation. Pause, Pause.
- 1:20:48Lance. Berkman We're going off of
- 1:20:50hometowns. That's just that's.
- 1:20:54That's me knowing ball. That's me knowing ball.
- 1:20:57That's. Crazy.
- 1:20:59That's crazy. His literal no, I thought it was
- 1:21:02a nickname was like Big Texas or something.
- 1:21:04It was Big Puma or Fat Elvis. So I was awful, but I still know
- 1:21:07ball. I still know ball anyway, Fat
- 1:21:10Elvis, All right, We're 4 picks deep.
- 1:21:12Man, that got me fired up. We're 4 picks deep.
- 1:21:16Justin Berlin or native ALDI. I mean, that's not that crazy.
- 1:21:19We're, we're doing OK here. We're doing OK.
- 1:21:22There's some we can, there's some we can work with here.
- 1:21:25No, it's, it's staring us right in the face.
- 1:21:27Dude, it's so easy. Come on, I'm there.
- 1:21:29I'm there. OK, this is our fifth pick 321
- 1:21:34Rick Scherzer. Oh my God, what are you?
- 1:21:36Doing dude, they're both on the roster.
- 1:21:40They're both on the rosters, both in the rotation.
- 1:21:43I was thinking Porcello, former Red Sock, former Tiger.
- 1:21:48That's where I was going. Oh my.
- 1:21:51That's where I was going. These litter.
- 1:21:54These, That's where I was going. Just within the last three
- 1:21:57years, he's been a teammate of both.
- 1:21:59What? Are we?
- 1:21:59I hear you. I hear you.
- 1:22:00That's an oversight. You are.
- 1:22:02That's an oversight you are killing.
- 1:22:04Me this game. We can still get there.
- 1:22:06We're still there. Rick Porcello I.
- 1:22:08Guess dude that that was not. Sure is there.
- 1:22:11That was on a tee for us. Oh, come on, come on, shape up,
- 1:22:17you said Rick Porcello. And I said Max Scherzer.
- 1:22:23Come on, hold on. Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 1:22:25Let me think, let me think, let me think.
- 1:22:31Who was it? Who was it?
- 1:22:33I know, I know, I know it. I know who it is, but I don't
- 1:22:38know who it is. Oh, who was that other one?
- 1:22:52Who was the other one? Am I allowed to?
- 1:23:01Am I allowed to look something up?
- 1:23:02I don't think so. I think that's, I think that's
- 1:23:05breaking. Oh, who was it?
- 1:23:07I'm going to, I'm going to kick myself for not knowing this.
- 1:23:11Apparently I apparently I don't know ball.
- 1:23:16Who? Well, I'm blocking on it too.
- 1:23:19I really AM. We're thinking of this.
- 1:23:21We're trying to think of the same thing.
- 1:23:22Mad Scherzer, Rick Porcello. Well, don't tell me what you're
- 1:23:28trying to think of. Well, yeah, whispering doesn't
- 1:23:32help really either. That that's kind of the same
- 1:23:35thing. Who was that?
- 1:23:44Oh, boom. Got it, got it.
- 1:23:49I thought of it. Came to my mind.
- 1:23:53We're back to knowing ball. I'm back.
- 1:23:58I'll give you a minute. I got it.
- 1:24:00I got what you're looking for. I got what you're after.
- 1:24:05We're thinking the same thing. I got it.
- 1:24:10I'm going to be really upset. And for the record, I already
- 1:24:14have the guy, I have the name, but I'm going to confirm
- 1:24:17something real quick. It's not cheating because I
- 1:24:19already I've it's in the chamber.
- 1:24:21The name is in the chamber. I'm I'm just for my own Peace of
- 1:24:24Mind, just to confirm that I I do, in fact, no ball.
- 1:24:28I'm going to look something up here.
- 1:24:37This is driving me crazy. Yep, I Yep, I hate.
- 1:24:40Confirmed Confirmed Do no ball. Yeah, we're back.
- 1:24:45We're so we've never been more back.
- 1:24:47We have never been more back. I hate it so much.
- 1:24:50You're going to, you're going to kick yourself.
- 1:24:52We're five guesses deep. Is this going to be our 6th?
- 1:24:54Doing Yeah, this is. Going to be our 6th.
- 1:24:57Come on. Head back to no one ball.
- 1:25:07Also shout out shout out Roberto Clemente.
- 1:25:10Just a little little plug for the the goat.
- 1:25:14Who's the Hall of Fame? Guess, guess, guess.
- 1:25:16That name. Hall of Fame?
- 1:25:18Roberto Clemente. True, Yes.
- 1:25:20What a fitting day to wear this shirt.
- 1:25:22Look at that. That's big time.
- 1:25:23He was one of our founding members.
- 1:25:25I'm really struggling here dude, I'm really blanking you're.
- 1:25:30Going to be so upset. I'm going to be so upset.
- 1:25:34I would, I would give you a hint just to like kind of just to
- 1:25:38kind of irritate you a little bit, but.
- 1:25:42It's already. I'm already pretty irritated.
- 1:25:45About it, it's on the off chance it gave something away.
- 1:25:47I wouldn't want to want to. Wouldn't want to mess with the
- 1:25:50integrity of the game. What the heck, dude?
- 1:25:56We may just have to. I'll probably still go with the

- 1:26:15Scherzer? Scherzer and who?
- 1:26:19Berlander or Porcello? OK, Porcello and Scherzer.
- 1:26:24All right. So come up with a name based off
- 1:26:26that. I'm probably still going to go
- 1:26:27with the same guy. And then we'll just go from
- 1:26:30there because I, I can't think of anything else.
- 1:26:35I'm so irritated right now. You're going to be irritated.
- 1:26:38You're going to be irritated, but you're not going to get at
- 1:26:41this point. You're if if you haven't gotten
- 1:26:43it yet, you're not going to think of it.
- 1:26:44So I'll, I'll, I'll, I'll carry the torch.
- 1:26:47I don't even know if this guy's a tiger.
- 1:26:48I I feel like he was for a SEC. I don't know, Let's just go.

- 1:27:16right? I got my guy.
- 1:27:18You got your guy. Yeah.
- 1:27:19This is our 6th guest. You're going to be so upset
- 1:27:22that. You know this name. 321 David
- 1:27:27Price David Price OH oh, that was the guy that's.
- 1:27:32Crazy. That's the guy that rotation.
- 1:27:35Yes, that was the name that I was kicking.
- 1:27:37I was like, who is the guy? It was the guy.
- 1:27:40I thought he was a Tiger, but that was the rotation to going
- 1:27:44back to like Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello.
- 1:27:48He was in that that and when I said, when I said let me look
- 1:27:51something up because I already I had the name, dude, I looked it
- 1:27:54up. He's in the picture.
- 1:27:55They're all like holding the ball like like towards the
- 1:27:58camera that he's in that picture.
- 1:28:00Like that was that was part of the the like the rotation that
- 1:28:02gets memed all the time where it's like, how could the Tigers
- 1:28:05not do anything with this? David Price was one of those
- 1:28:07guys. Was that post?
- 1:28:11Oh wait, forgot to hit it. There we go.
- 1:28:16Was that post raise? Yes, yeah, No, no, opposed
- 1:28:21because he came, he came up with the race.
- 1:28:25Dang, I, I knew I was going off of like Porcello, the Red Sox,
- 1:28:32Tigers connection. Yeah, that's why I went David
- 1:28:35Price. I I genuinely couldn't remember
- 1:28:37if he was in that. Rotation.
- 1:28:39Was that the guy you were trying to think of?
- 1:28:41No, I thought it was a different name in that rotation, but I
- 1:28:44guess it makes sense now that we're like.
- 1:28:46Yeah, he was. There was there was one other
- 1:28:48guy. I.
- 1:28:48I thought there was a fifth guy. Yeah.
- 1:28:50There was like, I don't remember who it was.
- 1:28:53Let me look. Real quick.
- 1:28:55And like everyone jokes about like Rick Purcell of being like,
- 1:28:58oh Anabal. Sanchez, that was the guy that
- 1:29:00was the the, the fifth guy in that in that mix.
- 1:29:04Who's been around the block, dude?
- 1:29:06He was. I'm pretty sure he was in
- 1:29:09Washington with Max, wasn't he? I believe so, yeah.
- 1:29:14Yeah. All right.
- 1:29:16Well, I mean that that salvage it a little bit.
- 1:29:18That was a little sloppy. That was a lot of that was
- 1:29:21vacation. I'm going to I'm going to blame
- 1:29:23vacation brand. We got off on the, we got off on
- 1:29:25the wrong foot. The important thing is we got
- 1:29:27there and we introduced a new member or we inducted, I should
- 1:29:31say, a new member to the hall to the say the name Hall of Fame in
- 1:29:35David Price. David, congratulations welcome.
- 1:29:42Yep, got got no celebratory music, but this'll do.
- 1:29:48Welcome, David, and goodbye to all of you.
- 1:29:51We'll see you next time. I don't know.
- 1:29:53Nate and I are both going to be out of town next this next week.
- 1:29:56I don't know what a recording schedule looks like.
- 1:29:59Yeah, we may. We may hit you up with a pod,
- 1:30:04maybe two. We may not.
- 1:30:06It's kind of up in the air. There's some things at play we
- 1:30:09got to figure out. Got to figure out why five, got
- 1:30:11to figure out availability. You got to figure out if there's
- 1:30:14even anything in the world to talk about worth covering.
- 1:30:17Because as we mentioned, we're still kind of in this weird
- 1:30:20residual August holding pattern. So not quite sure what's going
- 1:30:26to happen there, but we will, we will certainly let you know.
- 1:30:28We'll keep you up to date. We'll keep, we'll keep you in
- 1:30:31the loop as to what's going to be happening here in the coming
- 1:30:34week. But either way, whether you hear

- 1:30:50Day weekend. You're you got to get caught up
- 1:30:52with the boys, get caught up with the pod.
- 1:30:54Check us out on YouTube. This I would, I would argue this
- 1:30:58would be a great one for YouTube because there there's a lot of
- 1:31:00visuals for this one. I mean, I I got closer to the
- 1:31:04camera on this episode. You got up in there?
- 1:31:07I got, I mean, I was up in the grill, man, I that's close as
- 1:31:10I've ever gotten to a camera. I think when we've done a
- 1:31:12podcast. So that's that's been that was
- 1:31:14fun. And then just my faces of
- 1:31:17disgust and anguish at the say the name game with Nate's
- 1:31:22vacation brain. But yeah, check us out on on
- 1:31:24YouTube and otherwise we'll chat with you guys.
