- 0:20I'm going to do something a little bit different than I have
- 0:22never done before is I am coming live to you on Instagram with my
- 0:28latest podcast episode. So I thought it would be fun to,
- 0:32instead of just in my office recording my podcast for you
- 0:36guys to bring it on the live so that you guys could watch it and
- 0:39be a part of it as I'm doing the episode.
- 0:42So you guys are gonna get a front row seat to my podcast
- 0:46this week and it's not gonna drop until Thursday.
- 0:49So I titled this next podcast episode of Frontline Static
- 0:54episode 109, Feeling your way to Flight.
- 0:57I want to help you guys work on getting to flight without
- 1:04believing that you need to take all of these actions.
- 1:08Meaning I see a lot of people hustle and overwork and then
- 1:12once they get an offer and they get into flight nursing, then
- 1:15they burn out, they get overwhelmed, they spin and they
- 1:18end up leaving the position ahead of time.
- 1:21So this I'm going to show you what this looks like as far as
- 1:27how I see people actioning their way to get to flight and taking
- 1:30all these unnecessary actions. And then I'm going to talk to
- 1:33you about believing and feeling your way to flight and then give
- 1:37you some solutions on how you grow this belief in yourself.
- 1:42If you don't believe that you're a flight nurse, companies won't
- 1:46either. Meaning when you sit in that
- 1:47helicopter seat or when you do ride alongs or when you sit for
- 1:52interviews. If you don't believe it, then
- 1:54flight companies won't either. That's why this belief piece is
- 1:57so important. The way that I see people doing
- 2:00this is they're chasing the way that they think they're going to
- 2:05feel in the end. So, for example, a lot of people
- 2:09want to get into flight because they think after they become a
- 2:11flight nurse or after they become a flight medic, then
- 2:14they're going to feel proud or they're going to feel
- 2:17accomplished. And so they chase that feeling
- 2:20similar to people who are trying to lose a bunch of weight.
- 2:24They think they're going to feel different at the end of losing
- 2:28that weight. The key to this and getting to
- 2:31this goal of flight and any goal that you're trying is to take
- 2:35that feeling that you think you're gonna feel once you get
- 2:38there and start feeling it now. So, for example, if you think
- 2:42that getting to flight nursing is gonna have you feel proud,
- 2:46you want to start generating pride now.
- 2:49And so I'm gonna show you what this kind of looks like as
- 2:52people are taking actions and what it's gonna look like if you
- 2:55feel your way to flight and believe your way to flight.
- 2:59So a common thing that I see people chasing who want to get
- 3:04into flight nursing is chasing all of these certifications, all
- 3:10of these courses. And they're getting external
- 3:14validation. Meaning they think if they take
- 3:16the certs or they take these trauma courses that they're
- 3:19going to feel more ready or that they're going to feel like they
- 3:23have enough time and experience or they're going to feel enough.
- 3:26And they're getting a small dopamine hit from every cert
- 3:30that they take, every course that they take, every next big
- 3:33thing that they take. And everybody knows people like
- 3:37this who want all the letters behind their name and continue
- 3:41to chase certifications. But here's the thing about
- 3:44external validation and trying to action your way into feeling
- 3:47enough is that there is not enough certs, not enough
- 3:51departments that you can work to start to feel ready or feel
- 3:55enough. And the way that I see this is I
- 3:58have a lot of nurses and paramedics that come to me that
- 4:02have been in these critical care jobs for 15 or 20 years and they
- 4:06still don't feel ready. And that is simply because
- 4:10they've been chasing all of these courses, sorts,
- 4:12departments of things to have themselves feel ready and trying
- 4:17to get external validation from it instead of creating internal
- 4:21validation and internal belief for this goal.
- 4:24When you fear that it's going to go away, when you fear that it's
- 4:30not possible for you and you don't have control over it,
- 4:34that's where I see people going out and doing more and
- 4:38continuing to fuel it with things.
- 4:40So we need to give ourselves evidence outside of external
- 4:45factors that we can create the success and belief in ourselves
- 4:50and not by going to get more certifications or taking more
- 4:53courses or working more departments.
- 4:55Because like I said, when I work with people who've been doing
- 5:00this 1520 years, they still don't feel ready.
- 5:04Another common error that I see people making who are trying to
- 5:07get to flight is they fear the disapproval of others.
- 5:12Meaning I have a lot of people who are trying to do this in
- 5:15secrecy. They don't want to tell people
- 5:17one, because they fear they're going to fail and then
- 5:20everybody's going to know 2. They fear what their friends and
- 5:24family are going to say and that they might disapprove of their
- 5:27decision. And when they tell me that, I
- 5:30know that's when they're trying to get external validation that
- 5:34I know that's when if someone says something negative, then it
- 5:38highly effects them instead of internally deciding ahead of
- 5:42time how you want to feel about it.
- 5:45And so with with this, I, I just wanna offer that we can't
- 5:53control the way people think about us and the way people
- 5:57think about our goals. But I see so many people spend
- 6:01time around not telling anybody about it because they fear
- 6:04failure or they fear what their friends or family or close
- 6:07people are gonna say about them. But the reason behind this is
- 6:11because they just haven't dealt with the thoughts that people
- 6:18are are having within themselves, meaning that they're
- 6:22thinking some of these thoughts and they haven't worked through
- 6:25them yet. So when you fear it and you
- 6:30someone disapproves of you, it affects you because it's only a
- 6:34reflection of the thoughts that you've had that you haven't
- 6:37worked through. So for example, I hear a lot of
- 6:40people say, well, this doesn't, isn't good timing for you.
- 6:46And maybe if you haven't worked through the thought of like
- 6:48timing for you and your life and your circumstances, that when
- 6:52someone else close to you says that, then you're like, oh, then
- 6:55you silently agree with them. And so it's really important to
- 6:59create that internal validation for yourself of this goal and
- 7:03work through some of those thoughts so that you don't fear
- 7:07the disapproval of anyone else. Here's the difference.
- 7:10When you get internal validation, meaning you generate
- 7:14your own confidence based on yourself and not based on the
- 7:20the certs or the courses or other people, then it doesn't
- 7:24really matter what other people are saying because you know for
- 7:28yourself why it's a good fit for you.
- 7:31OK, so one other thing that I want to offer with this approval
- 7:36piece is that getting people to approve of you, people pleasing,
- 7:43is always gonna keep you from major growth because what you do
- 7:48or what you don't do is going to be fueled by other people's
- 7:51thoughts of you. And what matters the most,
- 7:54especially in flight as you're making the really tough critical
- 7:58decisions, is what you think of you and that you have your own
- 8:01back. So this is common ways that I
- 8:04see people getting external validation and actioning their
- 8:07way to flight. Now I'm going to give you the
- 8:10solutions in this episode of how to get internal validation, how
- 8:15to feel and believe your way to flight.
- 8:18Because the key isn't taking a bunch of actions.
- 8:21The key is to working on that mindset and that belief and
- 8:25really being able to believe that you're a flight nurse
- 8:28before you even get there. And you want to work on this
- 8:30belief As soon as nursing school, I saw someone comment
- 8:33that they're a nursing school. This is the time that you want
- 8:36to grow that belief. And people ask me when should I
- 8:39start working towards flight. And a common misconception is
- 8:43people start working towards it at their three-year mark.
- 8:46When you want to work, start working towards flight is when
- 8:49you know that you want flight. So if it's before nursing
- 8:51school, if it's during nursing school, whenever it is that you
- 8:54know, that's when you want to work, start working towards it.
- 8:57And I really teach you what steps to be taking in the flight
- 9:00prep Academy to start working towards it.
- 9:02OK, so you guys ready? Let's talk about what you need
- 9:05to do to get internal validation for yourself and how to feel
- 9:10your way to flight and how to work on growing that belief of
- 9:13getting into flight nursing. OK, like I said at the
- 9:16beginning, we chase the feeling of how we're going to feel once
- 9:21we became a flight nurse or flight paramedic, meaning we
- 9:25think we're going to, it might be, we think we're going to feel
- 9:28proud, we think we're going to feel accomplished.
- 9:32We think we're going to feel confident.
- 9:34And the key to creating more belief in yourself is just
- 9:39deciding now that you are going to generate that feeling now.
- 9:43So if you know that you're going to feel proud, you want to
- 9:46generate feeling pride now and using this feeling to fuel you
- 9:51and every action that you're taking towards it.
- 9:55When you can start to become that flight nurse now who feels
- 9:59proud, that's how you grow the steady belief in yourself that
- 10:03is possible for you. That's why the people in my
- 10:06Flight Prep Academy are not only getting offers and getting
- 10:10offers in their first one to two interviews, but they're doing so
- 10:13well in orientation and coming off of orientation and 3rd
- 10:17writer quicker because they've already worked on growing that
- 10:20belief that they're a flight nurse and decided ahead of time
- 10:23how they wanted to feel and started generating that feeling
- 10:26now. So I'm going to teach you how
- 10:29many steps I have. I have 5-6 steps on how to do
- 10:32this, how to generate the feeling ahead of time, how to
- 10:37feel your way to flight, and how to create internal validation
- 10:42for getting there. So #1 decide ahead of time what
- 10:48is the feeling that you will feel once you arrive in flight
- 10:51nursing? Then work on generating this
- 10:54now. And so I talked about this a
- 10:55little bit already. So whether that feeling is
- 10:58proud, accomplished, confident, whatever you think it's going to
- 11:04be when you get that offer and you sign your paper to that
- 11:07company, what do you think is that feeling you're going to
- 11:09feel? That's the feeling that you want
- 11:11to start generating right now for yourself.
- 11:14And your question might be like, how do I do that?
- 11:16So for example, if it's proud, you want to start feeling pride
- 11:20now, Pride for everything that you've accomplished.
- 11:25Proud of how you're showing up every day, proud of the actions
- 11:28that you've decided to go towards this goal.
- 11:31Proud that you decided that you're even going to live out
- 11:34working towards this dream. Because lots of people quietly,
- 11:38quietly give up on their dreams. They decide that growth is not
- 11:43for them because they're comfortable where they're at,
- 11:46but they still have that little hint that's like, I'm feel
- 11:49unfulfilled. I'm feeling stuck at my job.
- 11:51I know I want something more. So feeling proud now #2 this is
- 11:58a big one, you guys. And this is sometimes really
- 12:01hard for me to do. And I really encourage all the
- 12:04people that I work with and for myself to live in gratitude and
- 12:08allow celebrations. So #2 is allow celebrations,
- 12:13seek out what to celebrate, and allow celebrations for the wins,
- 12:19whether they're little wins or big wins.
- 12:21See every single win, the win allows.
- 12:26There's two reasons for this. One, it puts you into deep
- 12:28gratitude of like where you've gone and where and where you are
- 12:33going. I, the way that I see people not
- 12:36do this is in nursing school, for example, I think we're such
- 12:42a clean slate. We're, we're willing to learn
- 12:45anything. We're like, we don't know
- 12:47anything. Let's, let's just learn and take
- 12:49in and get criticism and just learn how to do this job.
- 12:54And then somewhere around the 34610 year mark, we start to
- 12:59feel entitled. We start to think, Oh, well, we
- 13:04should know this by now. Or, or it's like either we
- 13:09should know this or I'm not good enough because I don't know
- 13:11this, or we're like, why are those people criticizing me?
- 13:15We have to allow ourselves to be a clean slate.
- 13:19And in doing that is allowing celebrations, allowing ourselves
- 13:23to say, oh, wait, look at how far I've gone from nursing
- 13:27school. I was this little tiny new grad
- 13:30nurse who turned into this critical care nurse who can take
- 13:34any patient on or have any code and feel really confident about
- 13:38it. I think we forget to realize
- 13:40like how far we've come and celebrate all of the wins.
- 13:43So that's the one reason why you want to celebrate is because you
- 13:45want to recognize how far you've come.
- 13:47And then the second reason why celebrations are so important is
- 13:51because you want to see what's been working for you.
- 13:54When you celebrate, you can be like, oh, you know what's really
- 13:57been working for me as I'm a really good critical thinker.
- 14:00I'm able to make the decisions in the high pressurized moments.
- 14:03I'm able to work really well with anybody no matter what
- 14:06their personality is. And so when you can celebrate
- 14:10those little things, you'll find out what your strengths are.
- 14:14And those strengths will create momentum to keep doing what is
- 14:19working. And when you keep doing what is
- 14:21working, that will help you take the correct steps to get into
- 14:25flight. When you allow celebrations and
- 14:29you know what's working, then you can continue on with the
- 14:32things that are working and then make them a little bit better as
- 14:35you evaluate versus if you don't celebrate, then you might start
- 14:38doing something totally different and not continue to do
- 14:42what's working. So #2 is allow celebrations and,
- 14:46and seek out those small wins and be able to recognize them #3
- 14:51in generating internal validation and feeling your way
- 14:56to flight and working on your belief.
- 14:58Is what is telling yourself that what you want is work worth the
- 15:04risk even if you fail? And the way that I see this for
- 15:08a lot of people is they're like, I don't know if I want to go to
- 15:10flight nursing because I don't want to fail.
- 15:12I don't want to tell people about it because I don't want to
- 15:14fail. And here's the thing about
- 15:16failure. My last week's episode was on
- 15:19the value and failure and finding all of the value in it.
- 15:23I think about this for myself a lot because I think this is what
- 15:27stops a lot of people from going for big things.
- 15:29And I've been like trying to evaluate like what always has me
- 15:32shoot for big goals and always go for them.
- 15:35And it's and of course, like the thought is always going to be
- 15:39there of what if I fail? But I try to steer my brain the
- 15:43other direction and say, but what if I succeed?
- 15:47And if I don't succeed, if I don't, if I don't get there, if
- 15:53I do fail. And the big goals that I create
- 15:55for myself, I like the version of me that always tries, then
- 16:02the version of me that subtly gives up and pulls back and
- 16:06wonders what if. I like the version of me that
- 16:10even if I fail at the thing that I'm going at, that I'm doing it
- 16:15Because what's going to be even harder for me is to not try at
- 16:19all. And I don't know if you guys
- 16:21feel similar to this, but I just know that at night when I lay my
- 16:26head on the pillow, I always like the version of me that went
- 16:29for it, even if I didn't get it that day.
- 16:32And what I also know about myself is if I keep at it, if I
- 16:36keep wanting this, if I keep trying, even if I keep failing
- 16:40that I eventually will figure it out and I will get there.
- 16:43So #3 is what you want is worth the risk even if you fail number
- 16:5040. And something that I want to go
- 16:51back and say with #3 is it's actually not about getting to
- 16:55flight. See, people think when they get
- 16:57to flight that they're going to feel so much different.
- 16:59But you don't feel any different.
- 17:01You're still the same person. You still have 50% of the good
- 17:04things and 50% of the bad things.
- 17:06But what it's about in getting to flight nursing is the person
- 17:11that you become in the journey. It's about what you figure out
- 17:15about yourself, your resilience, your grit, your strength, your
- 17:18willingness to keep at something.
- 17:21That's what you find out. And then the growth happens
- 17:23after you get into flight because you've taken all of
- 17:26those failures, all of those lessons, and they've made you
- 17:28stronger. To be able to be the flight
- 17:29nurse who's going to fly into these critical situations, make
- 17:33the hard decisions, and be able to have your own back and your
- 17:39team's back in every situation. So that's why becoming who
- 17:43you're going to be come in this journey of going for something
- 17:45is so important, OK #4 in, in feeling your way to flight and
- 17:52working on growing your belief is separating your identity from
- 17:57your job. OK, I'm going to be honest with
- 17:59you guys. This is something I have had a
- 18:02hard time in myself. The number one question that I
- 18:07fear people asking me sometimes who don't work in Healthcare is
- 18:11what? What are your hobbies?
- 18:13What do you like to do outside of the work?
- 18:15Because my work has always been so closely tied to my identity,
- 18:20meaning I've tried to find joy from my job.
- 18:24Or when I had a rough shift or I didn't like my job for that day
- 18:28or that month or that shift or whatever, then I felt bad about
- 18:31myself. And that's what I mean by
- 18:33separating yourself from separating your identity from
- 18:36your job. We cannot continue to rely on
- 18:39our jobs to make us feel better. We have to generate the feeling
- 18:43for ourselves and separate our identity a little bit from it.
- 18:47This is how burnout is created. When we put so much of who we
- 18:52are and our identity into our jobs and when things aren't
- 18:56going well, then we allow ourselves to not feel good.
- 19:00And so being self, self motivating yourself, generating
- 19:04who you are and your identity outside of your job is going to
- 19:08require you to tap into your why.
- 19:11Why do you want to be a nurse? Why do you want to be a flight
- 19:14nurse? Why do you want this level of
- 19:17growth? And then also why do you desire
- 19:20it? Your desire and your why has to
- 19:23be stronger than the other people's voices because as long
- 19:29as you hold on to that desire, as long as you hold on to that
- 19:33why, that's how you're going to be able to separate yourself
- 19:36from your job and be able to be empowered by making decisions
- 19:41and generating confidence not based on what's happening at
- 19:45work that day or how well your shift is.
- 19:48This will also create possibility and momentum for
- 19:52you. My hunch is that that your job,
- 19:59like myself, has always created that external validation for
- 20:04you, meaning that if things were going well or if you did a
- 20:09really good job, then you allowed yourself to feel
- 20:11confident. And when things weren't and you
- 20:13were shutting yourself and you're like, I don't know
- 20:15enough, then you allowed yourself to have doubt.
- 20:18And it's in these moments that it you realize it becomes
- 20:23exhausting to use your job as that thing that fuels the way
- 20:28that you feel. So you to be self motivated is
- 20:32going to require you to tap into your desire, your why you're
- 20:36doing this and and to always be able to generate the way that
- 20:41you want to feel pride, belief in yourself, confidence outside
- 20:48of your work. And that's going to just be
- 20:50practicing these little belief, this belief work and the
- 20:53mindset. This also, I think like
- 20:58separating yourself from work requires you to think about what
- 21:03you enjoy doing outside of the job and really taking time to,
- 21:08one, take care of yourself. And this is what will help
- 21:12prevent burnout. And two, I see a lot of
- 21:16healthcare workers really go into people pleasing where it's
- 21:19like, I will, I'm so used to doing for other people at work,
- 21:22then outside of work, then they, they start doing for other
- 21:24people. And so really getting out of the
- 21:27people pleasing is starting to take care of yourself, your
- 21:30wants, your needs, finding joy again, having a little bit more
- 21:34fun in your life. This will help you separate your
- 21:36identity from your job. And I know that's really hard
- 21:38for some of us, but really think about like, what brings you joy,
- 21:42have fun and start creating that possibility.
- 21:46Because as a flight nurse, shifts are long, 24 hours is a
- 21:50long time. And one of the things that I
- 21:53really struggled with a lot was, you know, you go to your 12 hour
- 21:57shifts in the hospital and although it's a long day, it is
- 22:03a little bit easier than going to your 24 hour shift and then
- 22:07coming home and then really getting getting from me into mom
- 22:10mode and wife mode and all of those and house mode.
- 22:14And so the more that you practice this now, the better
- 22:17you'll be able to separate your work and your identity and your
- 22:21job because that's going to be required of you as a flight
- 22:24nurse. You cannot take home the things
- 22:28that you're doing and seeing at work.
- 22:31You're going to have to be able to process some of those
- 22:34emotions so that you can be the very best at work and you can be
- 22:38the very best at home. And the big part of this, and we
- 22:41talked about this yesterday in the Flight Prep Academy group
- 22:43session, week session, is putting our oxygen mask on 1st.
- 22:48And we forget to do this because we spend so much time taking
- 22:51care of people inside our jobs that we come home and we think,
- 22:55oh, we got to take care of our kids, we got to take care of our
- 22:56spouse, We got to take care of our house.
- 22:58Would really it, those things should always start with taking
- 23:01care of you first. And then when you take care of
- 23:03you, then you have so much more to give to other people.
- 23:06So that's number four, separating your identity from
- 23:09your job and taking care of yourself, OK #5 in the feeling
- 23:13and working on this belief and getting into flight is
- 23:16recognizing and reframing your past.
- 23:19What I mean by this is that I see and work with so many people
- 23:23that are holding on to their past, meaning they regret
- 23:26certain things that they did or certain things that they didn't
- 23:29do, and that holding on is holding them back.
- 23:32Because holding on to the past is preventing you from future
- 23:35thinking of getting to where you want to go.
- 23:38That regret that you're feeling is helping you not recognize the
- 23:43strides that you've taken. So reframing your past might be
- 23:48like, for example, if you didn't get that job, might be for
- 23:51example, hey, I didn't get that job.
- 23:53But in not getting it, it really taught me a lot about myself.
- 23:56It really taught me that I'm going to have to work a little
- 24:01bit harder in my belief in my confidence in putting myself out
- 24:06there and being scared and being bold at the same time.
- 24:10So that's kind of what reframing your past looks like and not
- 24:13living in regret. Those tools of reframing will
- 24:17help springboard you to the next thing, will help you not be so
- 24:21drugged down by the past, but be able to look into the future.
- 24:25In doing this, you want to tap into your desire of wanting
- 24:28more. Why do you want to be a flight
- 24:31nurse? Why do you want to get into
- 24:32flight? And also being willing to find
- 24:35what that answer is and know what that is OK 6.
- 24:39This is the last thing and building that belief and feeling
- 24:42your way to flight versus action in your way.
- 24:45You want to pull from the future, meaning you want to
- 24:49think about who is the future flight nurse that you are.
- 24:55What does she think about herself?
- 24:57What does she look like? What beliefs does she have about
- 25:02herself, he or she? And if this is a big thing, this
- 25:06is a big thing about pulling from the future.
- 25:08Whatever those beliefs are, whatever those thoughts are that
- 25:11you have about yourself, you want to start thinking those
- 25:14things about yourself now. If you think, oh, I'm going to
- 25:19be so much more confident or I'm going to be really strong in my
- 25:22decision making, you want to be confident now.
- 25:25You want to be strong in your decision making now.
- 25:27You want to become that flight nurse now and pull from him or
- 25:30her from the future. So these are some questions that
- 25:33will help you do that. The first question, if you knew
- 25:37that flight was inevitable, what would you start doing right now
- 25:42today? If you knew that flight nursing
- 25:46was inevitable for you, meaning that you were going to get there
- 25:49no matter what, like you had a magic wand that you could wave
- 25:52and you saw the future no matter how far away you were and you
- 25:55saw yourself getting there. If you knew that it was
- 25:57inevitable, what would you start doing right now?
- 26:02And I, my guess is it would be different than the actions that
- 26:05you're currently taking. And the second follow up
- 26:08question for that is, if you knew that flight was inevitable,
- 26:12meaning that you would get there no matter what, and you saw it
- 26:14already for yourself, what would you stop doing right now?
- 26:18And these are such great questions to really think about.
- 26:22And if you're listening right now, maybe pause this episode
- 26:26and think about those questions again.
- 26:28If you knew you flight was inevitable, what would you start
- 26:31doing right now? If you knew flight was
- 26:33inevitable, what would you stop doing right now?
- 26:36And those questions are going to be your answers of how you pull
- 26:40from the future and how you start working towards it right
- 26:42now. I want to offer you guys, I hope
- 26:46that this episode, how do you think differently?
- 26:50How do you maybe recognize some ways that you're trying to
- 26:52action your way, hustle, overwork, get yourself an
- 26:56overwhelming confusion, and hopefully gave you a process and
- 27:00some options to start working on that belief, that mindset and
- 27:05feeling your way to flight. This is a work that I teach my
- 27:08students to do inside the Flight Prep Academy.
- 27:11This is the work right here that is cutting people's time in
- 27:16half, if not shorter, of getting there because they're cutting
