- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 128 and
- 0:20this is another one of the song of ascents.
- 0:23And I'm scrolling forward to see when the songs of Ascent end.
- 0:29All right, They end at Psalm 134.
- 0:33So we've got six more, if I'm counting correctly, from 1:28 to
- 0:371:34, we have six of these left. And so these are the road trip
- 0:44songs. Maybe you, like me, grew up in a
- 0:49family where my mom on car trips, she would get pretty
- 0:55impatient with us kids for good reason.
- 0:57We were for rowdy and somewhat or I wouldn't say that we were
- 1:06cantankerous, but we did like to tease each other.
- 1:10And so along the journey we would we would say things that
- 1:16would get each other upset. We might, you know, be poking
- 1:19one another or all sorts of different things.
- 1:21And so my mom would often be like, listen, we we need to
- 1:25sing. Because if you were singing,
- 1:27then you weren't focusing as much on trying to be a nuisance
- 1:31to your sibling, and you wouldn't be whining about how
- 1:35long it was going to take because you were already busy
- 1:38with your mouth singing a song. And so I wonder if some of that
- 1:41was like what it was as people were going along the the
- 1:46journeys to Jerusalem three times a year for the different
- 1:50festivals that God had set up within the law.
- 1:55And this particular Psalm, frankly, it's just interesting
- 1:59and I'm going to read through it and I want to encourage you guys
- 2:04to be thinking even in your life about how you have seen this
- 2:08Psalm be true. And I'll even phrase it this
- 2:11way, times in which the Psalm has not seemed to be true within
- 2:19life as you have experienced it. You might be like what Brian,
- 2:22you're, you're asking me to think about a time God's word
- 2:25wasn't true. Well, let me read through it and
- 2:28we'll think through this together.
- 2:29And I, I firmly believe that God has some wonderful things for
- 2:33us. Verse #1 How happy is everyone
- 2:36who fears Yahweh who walks in his ways?
- 2:39You will surely eat what your hands have worked for.
- 2:42You'll be happy and it will go well for you.
- 2:45Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house.
- 2:49Your children like young olive trees around your table.
- 2:53In this very way, the man who fears Yahweh will be blessed.
- 2:57May Yahweh bless you from Zion so that you will see the
- 3:00prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life, and we'll see
- 3:04your children's children. Peace be with Israel.
- 3:09So here is this Psalm, and I want to, my brain always for
- 3:15some reason goes to the caveats, it goes to the exceptions, but I
- 3:19want to read through first with this Psalm and simply affirm the
- 3:25joy that there is in serving and following and obeying God.
- 3:32So let's start there and then I'll walk through.
- 3:35All right, What about those times when we don't see it?
- 3:37But first, let's walk through how true this Psalm is
- 3:41normatively within the lives of believers.
- 3:45Verse #1 how happy is everyone who fears Yahweh who walks in
- 3:50His ways? Think about that juxtaposition
- 3:52between happiness and fear. You would think if I am fearful
- 3:58of something, then perhaps the emotion I might feel if I'm not
- 4:04being destroyed by that thing that I'm afraid of is I feel
- 4:08relief or I feel peace or I feel calmness.
- 4:14We wouldn't automatically think what's the opposite of the fear
- 4:18of God? And we'd say or sorry not what
- 4:22is the opposite of the fear of God?
- 4:24What does the fear of God lead to?
- 4:27Most of us would not tend to say happiness, but this is the way
- 4:31that the Bible talks about it. Then as I recognize who God is,
- 4:35the fact that he is the Creator, He is the Lawgiver, He is the
- 4:39Savior, He is the Lord, the King, the one that I am called
- 4:42to obey. Then I need to adjust my
- 4:46thoughts and behavior and actions, my relationships, my
- 4:50finances, my schedule, my calendar, all of it is
- 4:56determined by him. And so because I fear him, my
- 5:01life actually becomes better as a result.
- 5:05Now, that's not better. Like, OK, I have all the
- 5:08Lamborghinis and I've got, you know, just endless cash flow
- 5:13pouring in. And so I'm able to go all over
- 5:16the world on all these trips. It's not that kind of good life.
- 5:19It's just the straight up good life that God has created for me
- 5:26to live. And the same has been true for
- 5:29so many people that I have known within my life.
- 5:33That as we fear and obey and follow the Lord, there is
- 5:37happiness for those that follow His instructions.
- 5:42We went over and over and over this in Psalm 119 that following
- 5:48God's instructions for us leads to our flourishing and our joy
- 5:54and the embodiment of our relationships as God intended
- 5:59them to be. It is a good thing.
- 6:02It results in joy and happiness and blessing for us to walk with
- 6:08God. Verse #2 He then talks about the
- 6:12results of of your labor when you are walking God's way, He
- 6:18says you will surely eat what your hands have worked for.
- 6:21You will be happy and it will go well for you.
- 6:25The opposite of this would be if you are not able to eat what
- 6:29your hands have worked for. So you've worked and worked
- 6:31within a field, and I can think of two possibilities even from
- 6:35what we hear in Scripture. One possibility would be that as
- 6:39crops come up, you have an invading force or an invading
- 6:42army that come and they take away all of the crops.
- 6:46You can read that about that happening several times in the
- 6:49Book of Judges. And so here he's saying when you
- 6:52walk with the Lord, when you are following him, God gives a
- 6:56blessing so that your crops are not stolen from you.
- 6:59The other thing that would sometimes happen in Israel's
- 7:02history, especially when they were not walking with the Lord.
- 7:06Ditto with the invading armies specifically, as Scripture
- 7:10outlines for us. The other way is that people
- 7:15would put in the work, they would plant the seed, they would
- 7:17till the ground, they would try and water, but maybe there
- 7:20wouldn't be enough rainfall that year.
- 7:23Maybe the ground was just too hard or too Stony it it couldn't
- 7:27really be broken up enough via the plows and things like that.
- 7:32And so it would be too rough, too hard to be able to sustain
- 7:37the plant life. And so you could do the work,
- 7:40but then you wouldn't even get the crops because the crops
- 7:43would die. And so here the psalmist says,
- 7:47as you are following the Lord, you can know that the effort
- 7:51that you are putting in there will be good results as a result
- 7:56of that, He says you will be happy and it will go well for
- 8:01you. And I'm thankful that in my
- 8:04life, I haven't had to worry about the work that I have put
- 8:10in, it being pointless, it being useless or choked out, frankly.
- 8:20I just know God has blessed what I have put in so that I have
- 8:27been able to experience sustenance.
- 8:29I've been able to experience joy and satisfaction and
- 8:34thankfulness in what God has done.
- 8:37So let me just kind of shoot it out there.
- 8:40Not everyone that I have ever shared the gospel with has
- 8:43received the Lord, at least as far as I know.
- 8:47And, and so I could have the mindset, all right, well, that
- 8:54was just wasted energy or wasted time.
- 8:56There have been people that I have tried to pastor, that I
- 9:01have counseled that have totally turned away towards a a very bad
- 9:07path in their life. And I could look at that and go,
- 9:09OK, well, you know, I, I just, I failed.
- 9:13I, if you will, using this analogy, I sewed in that field.
- 9:18I tried to water the plant and tried to weed, but it just did
- 9:22not work. It didn't bloom.
- 9:26But the truth is everything that God has wanted to happen in my
- 9:31life has come to pass. And so even in those times, I've
- 9:36been able to find moments where I go all right, that person
- 9:40might not have received the Lord, but I became bolder in
- 9:44sharing my faith as a result of the fact that I shared my faith
- 9:47with them. This person didn't heed my
- 9:51advice, but I was at least a good enough friend to them to
- 9:55warn them about the Cliff that they were headed off of.
- 9:59And so this, this kind of focus and belief in life that God will
- 10:08cause to flourish, what needs to flourish in our life so that we
- 10:12are able to eat what our hands have worked for, that we would
- 10:15have meaningful labor is something that we can genuinely
- 10:19hold onto and love. I'm thankful that here this is
- 10:24someone that is walking in the ways of God.
- 10:27When you walk with the Lord, your money gets to be used for
- 10:33you. So I I'm going to give a couple
- 10:36of examples of how this might not look in your life.
- 10:41So I do not intend these to be any sort of shame.
- 10:46I do not intend for this to be anything that you go, oh, man,
- 10:50yeah, that that all describes me.
- 10:52I feel really down. You know, I just want to
- 10:54encourage you to walk God's way. And when you do that, you will
- 11:00be blessed for it, and you will find that God, as here, allows
- 11:06there to be fresh blessing and happiness as you use your
- 11:11finances in the way that they're supposed to go.
- 11:13So some people due to financial mismanagement, theft, all sorts
- 11:18of different things, you can have garnished wages that at
- 11:23your job, you know, they take out a portion of the money that
- 11:27would normally be yours because you're working for it, but it's
- 11:30going to someone else. You can think of things like
- 11:34child support, that there's no longer a relationship that is
- 11:38there between the parents, not that marriage relationship.
- 11:42And so the family unit is not together.
- 11:45And so perhaps the dad, perhaps the mom has to send in child
- 11:49support for to the other parent so that their child is able to
- 11:54be raised. And so that would be another way
- 11:57in which you'd be working for money that then you are not
- 12:00seeing. You don't get what your hands
- 12:02have worked for. For many people dealing with a
- 12:06lot of, you know, credit card debt or there's all sorts of
- 12:10different debt. And while student loan debt is a
- 12:15giant thing nowadays, I don't know how many of my listeners on
- 12:18here either have student loan debt or are, you know, kind of
- 12:23the age where they're still paying those student loans off
- 12:28jokingly. This is not serious.
- 12:31If you have student loans, let me know in Adm comment below I'd
- 12:34love to hear about. But those are like choices where
- 12:39then you are not able to enjoy all of the things that your
- 12:44hands have been working for now very complicated.
- 12:48And you can say, well, I have my degree and so I worked for that.
- 12:51And so this is just a result of me being able to get what I
- 12:53want. Absolutely.
- 12:55Again, not this isn't like a shameful thing.
- 12:57Many, many, many people find themselves in circumstances
- 13:01where they go, OK, yeah, I worked for this, but now, you
- 13:04know, Uncle Sam gets a third of this.
- 13:07And, you know, maybe I'm giving 10% to the Lord and I'm trying
- 13:11to put, you know, 10 to 20% in savings.
- 13:14And so now at the end of it, I've got, you know, 30 or 40% of
- 13:17my initial paycheck or my gross paycheck that I actually have
- 13:22now to work with. So it happens in many different
- 13:26ways for many different people, but I think here the most direct
- 13:30application is Contra invading armies coming and stealing your
- 13:36money, and Contra there not being enough rain to flourish
- 13:44the crops or the ground being receptive enough to the seeds
- 13:49that then they're able to be crops.
- 13:51No one's stealing them from you. This is a blessing of the Lord,
- 13:56you know, if you will, you're not gambling your money away.
- 13:59You're not doing those kinds of things.
- 14:00You're able to enjoy what the Lord has given you make wise
- 14:03financial choices and decisions. You're like, what is a wise
- 14:07financial choice or decision? Go go talk to someone smarter
- 14:11than me. If, if, if you do want just some
- 14:15basic premises, I'd love to talk to you.
- 14:18But I know many people have been encouraged and helped through
- 14:22guys like a, you know, Dave Ramsey, there's another guy out
- 14:26there, Nate Skelly that has some great things.
- 14:29And I'm sure there's many other people that even some of our
- 14:34commenters, different people could suggest.
- 14:37By no means is any one person like, Oh yes, this person will
- 14:40give you everything God wants you to do with your money
- 14:44because God's relationship with you is personal and He might
- 14:47have you do something that he's not having anyone else do, and
- 14:50He might not have you to do something that a lot of other
- 14:52people are doing. So be sensitive to the Holy
- 14:54Spirit, read the Word, especially Proverbs, and allow
- 14:58the Lord to work in your spirit of what He wants you to do with
- 15:02your wallet, even from day-to-day or month to month.
- 15:06Verse #3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your
- 15:10house. Your children like young olive
- 15:12trees around your table. Here the picture is your family
- 15:18will be overflowing with with joy, with people.
- 15:22There's a gladness that's there. You can think during this
- 15:25agricultural time period, the more kids you had, the more help
- 15:29you were able to have on the farm.
- 15:31You know, you have more hands. And so as a result, you have a
- 15:35better chance at survival and you can do more together.
- 15:38You might be able to have, you know, more animals that are
- 15:42there. You might be able to plant more
- 15:44types of crops because you can send out all of these all over,
- 15:48all of these children all over the place.
- 15:50And so this is not a one to one with 21st century American
- 15:56culture. As I've mentioned before, you do
- 15:58not have to be like, all right, Well, you know, my spouse, we
- 16:03just need to, you know, outfit a full, you know, basketball
- 16:07starting team or a football offense starting team.
- 16:14If we are going to have a biblical marriage, we have to
- 16:17have at least 27 children. No, no, no, you don't have to do
- 16:21that. But here what it is saying is
- 16:23there is joy and flourishing within the family.
- 16:29And I'm really thankful that I grew up in a home in which Jesus
- 16:34was the center. And so even nowadays, me and my
- 16:38siblings and my parents, like we love each other.
- 16:41We talk, whether in our family group chat or a FaceTime call
- 16:48or, you know, sending memes on Instagram.
- 16:51We we talk most every single day and I think here that this was a
- 16:56blessing that as my parents sought to walk with God, that
- 17:01then God brought this joy and flourishing within the home.
- 17:06And then each of us kids had to choose that for ourselves of
- 17:10what kind of life are we going to live?
- 17:12Are we going to choose to walk with God?
- 17:15And as you do that, your family relationships are so much better
- 17:19than they would be otherwise. Now, you might say, OK, but I've
- 17:22got a lot of people in my family that do not know the Lord.
- 17:25And so, yeah, it's all crazy. Let you be the safe haven.
- 17:30Let you be the source of joy and excitement and love and care
- 17:36within your family. Don't be the person that's
- 17:39always picking fights and is cantankerous and who slanders or
- 17:46gossips about other siblings or parents or cousins or whatever
- 17:50it may be. Let you be the source of
- 17:52flourishing and joy within your family.
- 17:56Verse #4 In this very way, the man who fears Yahweh will be
- 18:00blessed. So as I peaked at the time, I
- 18:03solidly don't have the time to go through.
- 18:06All right. What about when this isn't true?
- 18:08Suffice it to say this, this set of circumstances did not all
- 18:14match the the life of Jesus and Jesus walked with God.
- 18:20He feared the Lord and he was blessed.
- 18:24He had God's total favor on him and God's Holy Spirit on him.
- 18:30So if you in your life find that sometimes you're putting the
- 18:36work in and you're just not getting the money out of it, it
- 18:39doesn't mean that God doesn't love you.
- 18:41Jesus said, listen, the foxes have dens and the birds have
- 18:47nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
- 18:50So if you don't have the material goods, that's OK.
- 18:54It doesn't mean that God hates you or if you aren't, you know,
- 18:57getting all the money that you would have otherwise if it
- 19:01weren't for, you know, that garnishment, child support,
- 19:05alimony, whatever. Realize, OK, it's not that God
- 19:08hates you. It's that there are consequences
- 19:11to actions, whether that's our actions sometimes, very often
- 19:16the actions of others against us.
- 19:18But since Jesus knew what it was to be poor, that he is not
- 19:23married yet. He has his bride, the bride of
- 19:25Christ, but he is as of yet unmarried.
- 19:28Jesus did not have any physical children.
- 19:31Don't feel like when you lack some of these things that God's
- 19:34favor is not on you. These are circumstantial.
- 19:37These are cultural things, and so you can know that God loves
- 19:42you and God's favor is on you. Not if you just have all the
- 19:45trappings of this life, but if you have Jesus.
- 19:48Because if you have Jesus, then God's favor rests on you.
- 19:52Then verses 5 and 6 as we and may Yahweh bless you from Zion
- 19:55so that you will see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the
- 19:58days of your life. And we'll see your children's
- 20:01children here again. Jesus didn't see his grandkids.
- 20:04And so as a result, if you don't have grandkids, that's OK God's
- 20:09favor can still rest on you. But for many believers, this is
- 20:14kind of the good life that you are able to live long enough.
- 20:17You're not, you know, doing some knuckleheaded stuff so that then
- 20:21you. Are, you know, dying, you're not
- 20:24trying to rob a bank or something and getting a shootout
- 20:27with police and lose your life and you don't get to see your
- 20:30grandkids because you have done what is wrong, what is evil.
- 20:34And so you didn't experience that good life that God had
- 20:37planned for you. Instead, here as God blesses and
- 20:41as we try and walk in His ways, for many people, this will
- 20:45result in you being able to live a long life that you haven't
- 20:50fallen prey to the various vices of sin that can cause us to die
- 20:55early. Instead, we are able to see
- 20:57God's goodness over and over and over again within our life.
- 21:01We're able to see God's faithfulness even within your
- 21:04area of the world, maybe your country, and you will be able to
- 21:09enjoy those good family relationships even for
- 21:11generations. So thank you for tuning in
- 21:14today. And I know this is a little bit
- 21:16of an interesting Psalm, but I hope that it was a blessing to
- 21:20you today and an encouragement. If you have any questions or if
- 21:25you have any objections. And you're like, Brian, I just
- 21:27really hated how you said this. This was awful.
- 21:29This made me feel bad. Please let me know.
- 21:31I want to try to be sensitive in the way that I interact with
- 21:35people and know that we all come from so many different walks of
- 21:40life and different trials and and hurts that we have walked
- 21:43through. But know this, that God loves
- 21:46you. There is always a chance for a
- 21:48renewal and for that fresh new start with Jesus.
- 21:52He makes us his new creation where the old things have passed
- 21:56away and now everything has become new.
- 22:00And I'm so thankful for that. Have a wonderful time doing
- 22:03whatever you're doing now. And next episode will be in
- 22:06Psalm 129.
