- 0:09Walden. There's something new every day.
- 0:25Tesla's head of Autopilot and AI software just delivered some
- 0:28uncomfortable truths about the company's autonomous driving
- 0:31capabilities. They told an interviewer that
- 0:34Tesla's Full Self driving technology still trails Google's
- 0:37Waymo by a couple of years, despite years of bold promises
- 0:42by Elon Musk about robo taxis and coast to coast autonomous
- 0:47drives. This admission comes at a
- 0:48particularly awkward time for Tesla, which plans to launch its
- 0:52robo taxi service Pilot next month and has spent years
- 0:55marketing itself as the leader in automotive autonomy.
- 1:00Now the timing raises serious questions about whether Tesla's
- 1:03self driving promises match the technical reality on the ground.
- 1:07This assessment breaks from Tesla's usual pattern or
- 1:10projecting confidence about its autonomous driving timeline,
- 1:13making the comments all the more striking for engineers and
- 1:16consumers who've been waiting for Tesla to deliver on its self
- 1:20driving vision. Now the gap between Tesla and
- 1:23Wemo comes down to fundamental technical choices made years
- 1:26ago. Tesla chose a camera only
- 1:28approach called Tesla Vision, while Wemo equipped its vehicles
- 1:32with expensive Lidar sensors that cost around $75,000 per
- 1:36unit. Elon Musk famously called
- 1:39lighter a crutch and bet Tesla's autonomous strategy to cameras,
- 1:46and they cost between a dollar and $10 per sensor.
- 1:49This decision seems smart from a cost perspective, but it created
- 1:53technical challenges that Tesla still hasn't solved.
- 1:57Now the performance difference shows up in real world testing
- 2:00scenarios. Business Insider recently tested
- 2:03Tesla's Full Self Driving software and watched it drive
- 2:06into a bike lane before running a red lane when MO's vehicle
- 2:09took a different route during the same test and avoided both
- 2:12problems entirely. These aren't edge cases or minor
- 2:15glitches, but fundamental safety issues that highlight the
- 2:18technical gap that they acknowledged The Tesla's camera
- 2:22only approach faces inherit limitations that make autonomous
- 2:25driving harder to achieve. Cameras rely on external
- 2:27lighting conditions and struggle in situations more lighter
- 2:31excels like detecting objects in complete darkness or measuring
- 2:34precise distances to other vehicles.
- 2:37The software engineer admitted that solving autonomous driving
- 2:42with vision only sensors is technically challenging, but
- 2:45argues it's more valuable for the world to have a low cost
- 2:48solution. This trade off between cost and
- 2:50capability has become Tesla's defining characteristic in the
- 2:54autonomous driving space. The cost argument has become
- 2:57less compelling as lidar prices have dropped dramatically.
- 3:00Modern lidar units now cost under $1000, cheap enough for
- 3:04Toyota to include them in a $20,000 Chinese market electric
- 3:08vehicle. Tesla's cars cost twice as much,
- 3:10but still rely exclusively on cameras now.
- 3:14Power efficiency is another factor, and cameras use .9 watts
- 3:19each, compared to 10 watts for a Luminar Halo lidar unit.
- 3:23Tesla's Hardware 4 cars use eight external cameras, so the
- 3:27total power consumption difference isn't as dramatic as
- 3:31it appears. Tesla's struggle with autonomous
- 3:35driving matter because they affect the entire electric
- 3:38vehicle industry's capabilities. When the market leader in
- 3:41electric vehicles repeatedly missing self driving deadlines,
- 3:46that undermines consumer confidence in the brand in in
- 3:49autonomous technology across all manufacturers.
- 3:53Tesla has been promising a fully autonomous Coast to Coast Dr.
- 3:57since 2016, and each missed deadline makes the next promise
- 4:02harder to believe for some consumers.
- 4:05Now this credibility gap extends beyond Tesla to other companies
- 4:08making similar claims about autonomous driving deadlines.
- 4:12Now, the admission also effects Tesla's business model and stock
- 4:15valuation. Tesla trades at a premium
- 4:17compared to traditional automakers, partly because
- 4:19investors believe the company will generate revenue from
- 4:22autonomous robo taxis. If Tesla's self driving
- 4:25technology really lags Waymo by years, that robo taxi revenue
- 4:30might take much longer to materialize, And investors
- 4:32expect the gap between Tesla's market valuation and its actual
- 4:35autonomous driving capabilities could force a significant
- 4:39repricing of the stock. Meanwhile, Tesla sales problems
- 4:43extend beyond autonomous driving into core business fundamentals.
- 4:46The company's global deliveries dropped 13% in the first quarter
- 4:49of this year, while EV sales increased in the United States,
- 4:52Europe, and China. A Musk blames the decline on
- 4:55factory retooling for the refresh model.
- 4:58Why? Claiming the Tesla had to shut
- 5:00down production facilities worldwide to implement changes.
- 5:04He insists that retooling was necessary and timed for the
- 5:08first quarter, when seasonal demand traditionally runs lower.
- 5:12Now, Musk claims Tesla has seen a major rebound in demand
- 5:15following the factory retooling, but the sales data doesn't
- 5:18support this assertion yet. Tesla's April numbers continue
- 5:22declining, especially in Europe, where some countries saw drops.
- 5:25As large as 80% of China represents Tesla's second
- 5:29largest market, and sales there fell 9% in April, while the
- 5:33overall Chinese electric vehicle market grew 38%.
- 5:37Now, these numbers suggest Tesla's problems go deeper than
- 5:39temporary factory shutdowns, and the sales decline coincides with
- 5:43Musk's controversial political activities and his relationship
- 5:46with President Donald Trump. Many analysts point to Musk's
- 5:49political involvement as a factor in Tesla's declining
- 5:52sales, particularly among environmentally conscious
- 5:55consumers who traditionally buy electric vehicles.
- 5:57The Musk discusses this concern, asking how much consumers really
- 6:01care about a CEO's political views when making purchasing
- 6:04decisions. The question reveals a
- 6:06disconnect between Musk's perception and market reality.
- 6:10As consumer sentiment data suggests, political associations
- 6:13do influence buying decisions for many Tesla customers now.
- 6:19Tesla's current situation illustrates the challenge of
- 6:21managing technical innovation alongside public expectations.
- 6:25Though the company built its reputation on ambitious promises
- 6:29about autonomous driving and sustainable transportation, but
- 6:33delivering on those promises has proven more difficult than
- 6:36anticipated. Now, this honest assessment of
- 6:39Tesla's position relative to Waymo provides a rare glimpse
- 6:43into the technical reality behind the marketing claims.
- 6:47That admission the Tesla trails Waymo by years contradicts the
- 6:51company's public messaging about being ready to launch robo taxi
- 6:54services. Now it's a fresh departure for
- 6:58Tesla's usual confident public statements about autonomous
- 7:01driving. The willingness to acknowledge
- 7:04this position relative to competitor suggests the company
- 7:07might be adopting a more realistic approach to
- 7:09communicating about its self driving timeline.
- 7:11And whether this honesty translates into more achievable
- 7:15promises and better execution remains to be seen.
- 7:19But it provides A clearer picture of where Tesla actually
- 7:22stands in the race toward full autonomy.
