- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:17Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. This episode number three hundred and
- 0:20Speaker 1: today we've got another installment of our rut Fresh radio
- 0:24Speaker 1: mini series in which we're checking in with four hunters
- 0:26Speaker 1: from across the country to get the latest on deer activity,
- 0:30Speaker 1: current conditions, and the tactics working right now. Welcome to
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We're here for another episode of our rut Fresh radio
- 0:53Speaker 1: mini series in which myself and Spencer new Hearth are
- 0:58Speaker 1: here to break down the latest and greatest recent intel
- 1:02Speaker 1: from across the white tail hunting world. That means, Spencer,
- 1:06Speaker 1: what exactly that means. We're gonna be talking buck movement
- 1:11Speaker 1: in mid September, and I think this is probably like
- 1:15Speaker 1: the most up to date buck movement intel available. We're
- 1:19Speaker 1: recording this on a Tuesday. This podcast comes out on
- 1:21Speaker 1: a Wednesday, so all the information that you're hearing is
- 1:25Speaker 1: less than twenty four hours old. Then we're gonna talk
- 1:28Speaker 1: about things like bachelor groups, how the weather has changed, stuff,
- 1:32Speaker 1: if their signmaking happening, yet what the preferred food sources are,
- 1:35Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff that would factor you're into
- 1:38Speaker 1: your decision for going out and hunting, and what you're
- 1:41Speaker 1: set up is going to be like, Yeah, I love it,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and I'm going to add one more consistent kind of
- 1:48Speaker 1: segment to each one of these episodes. It's going to
- 1:50Speaker 1: be the segment on Fresh Radio where Mark gives Spencer
- 1:54Speaker 1: ship for not white tail hunting. So I don't I
- 1:57Speaker 1: do not like the fact that you're or a high
- 2:01Speaker 1: faluton elk hunter now, Spencer, uh No, not not high
- 2:05Speaker 1: falut I would I would be happy to be in
- 2:09Speaker 1: a tree stand right now because the elk made me
- 2:12Speaker 1: feel like an absolute idiot so far this year, Can
- 2:15Speaker 1: you give us like a thirty second cliff notes on
- 2:17Speaker 1: your first elk hunt ever or your first bowl elk
- 2:20Speaker 1: hunt ever? Right? Yes? Um, lots of walking around, lots
- 2:24Speaker 1: of calling and sounding like a sickly elk, lots of
- 2:29Speaker 1: baron oia where I'm looking around hoping grizzly, hoping grizzly
- 2:34Speaker 1: isn't like the next big brown thing that I see
- 2:36Speaker 1: instead of an elk. Um, And yeah, that's pretty much it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Walking and calling until I'm tired. Sounds like fun. I
- 2:45Speaker 1: trust that you will eventually figure it out. I have faith.
- 2:48Speaker 1: I hope you're right. Um, so even though you haven't
- 2:53Speaker 1: been on white tail hunting, you have been talking to
- 2:55Speaker 1: a whole bunch of people who have. And who are
- 2:59Speaker 1: those guests that we're going to hear from this week?
- 3:01Speaker 1: We started Wisconsin and talks to Tyler Frank's from Tenadie Outdoors,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and then Andrew Maxwell in Georgia from The Southern Outdoorsman,
- 3:09Speaker 1: and then we talked to Keith Thompson from Montana white
- 3:12Speaker 1: Tails incy in Montana, and then we end with my
- 3:14Speaker 1: constuctor from Heartland bow Hunter in Missouri. Sounds like a
- 3:18Speaker 1: good slate of folks and locations. I like that we
- 3:21Speaker 1: got like far West, we got far South, a little
- 3:24Speaker 1: bit here in between. UM, what is on your mind
- 3:28Speaker 1: at this time of year? And now, I know you're
- 3:30Speaker 1: not hitting it right now, but in past years you have. Um.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Where are we We're entering the third week in September,
- 3:38Speaker 1: so a lot of opening days just happened this past weekend.
- 3:44Speaker 1: There's a lot coming up in the next well in
- 3:46Speaker 1: the September. Another slate in October one is a whole
- 3:49Speaker 1: bunch that dropped. So so what's on your mind at
- 3:52Speaker 1: this time of year, Spencer, do you have like a
- 3:54Speaker 1: quick cock tip that's top of mind? Well, historically South
- 3:58Speaker 1: Dakota is opener would be the of September, and I
- 4:00Speaker 1: haunted every year, and what I kind of learned was
- 4:04Speaker 1: that if I didn't have any like good or recent
- 4:08Speaker 1: intel available to me, and I didn't know, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 1: exactly where these deer were entering a specific field that
- 4:16Speaker 1: I didn't have trail cameras up that point, I would
- 4:18Speaker 1: look to lifetime patterns. And what I mean by that
- 4:22Speaker 1: is trying to think back as to what the deer
- 4:25Speaker 1: did the year before and the year before that and
- 4:27Speaker 1: the year before that for herds as well as individual bucks,
- 4:32Speaker 1: because a lot of times you see the same kind
- 4:34Speaker 1: of shifts that this time of year when the food
- 4:37Speaker 1: sources become this or the weather does this, that the
- 4:41Speaker 1: deer are going to respond a specific way, and you
- 4:44Speaker 1: can kind of track that year after years. So if
- 4:47Speaker 1: you're hunting a property that you're familiar with, like I
- 4:50Speaker 1: was in South Dakota, you can kind of sometimes go
- 4:53Speaker 1: into an opener in late September blind, but still have success.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And now that wasn't the case with your mega early
- 5:03Speaker 1: season a couple of years ago, right, because that was
- 5:05Speaker 1: a little bit of a surprise. But but did you
- 5:08Speaker 1: have some kind of patterns that you knew that kind
- 5:11Speaker 1: of applied. Like I said, in that case, I was
- 5:14Speaker 1: hunting the lifetime patterns of just like the deer herd
- 5:18Speaker 1: in general. I knew that the end of September, when
- 5:21Speaker 1: there's corn in that kind of creates the specific funnels
- 5:26Speaker 1: that the deer tend to enter the field in the
- 5:27Speaker 1: same place. And so I didn't have any recent intel,
- 5:31Speaker 1: and I hadn't done much summer scouting, but I knew
- 5:34Speaker 1: that when there's corn in that time of year, most
- 5:36Speaker 1: of the deer would walk this specific area. And that
- 5:39Speaker 1: was how I killed my biggest box of my whole life. Yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 1: so it wasn't specific buck lifetime, but it was overall
- 5:47Speaker 1: heard annual pattern stuff that you apply that makes sense, um, so,
- 5:52Speaker 1: so kind of jumping off of that, the one thing
- 5:55Speaker 1: I would think about at this time of year, um,
- 5:58Speaker 1: other than than the obvious things that I'm sure we'll
- 6:01Speaker 1: talk about with the guests as far as keying on
- 6:03Speaker 1: food sources and changing conditions and all that. But but
- 6:07Speaker 1: this is when we start getting the first impacts of
- 6:09Speaker 1: hunting pressure for a lot of people. Because if you
- 6:13Speaker 1: are one of those states where the season opened at
- 6:16Speaker 1: the beginning of September, you've had three weeks of hunting
- 6:18Speaker 1: at this point. If you are in one of the
- 6:21Speaker 1: states that opened maybe September, here now into the first
- 6:25Speaker 1: week of hunting and deer changing their behavior. So for
- 6:29Speaker 1: anyone who's in those situations right now, the summer patterns
- 6:32Speaker 1: that you're looking at, the feeding, the bed to feed
- 6:35Speaker 1: patterns that you maybe had keyed on those first couple
- 6:38Speaker 1: of days, that's going to change to some degree, possibly
- 6:42Speaker 1: very dramatically, depending on how much hunting pressure is around you,
- 6:45Speaker 1: but it's going to change to some degree, and you
- 6:47Speaker 1: just make go to make sure you can adjust to that.
- 6:50Speaker 1: A lot of people talk about something they call the
- 6:53Speaker 1: October lull, and you can see that same thing in
- 6:56Speaker 1: mid September if you are hunting somewhere, that's all of
- 6:59Speaker 1: a sudden getting hunted a lot because because oftentimes that lull,
- 7:02Speaker 1: regardless of what it pops up, that's simply a change
- 7:05Speaker 1: in deer activity or where they're being active. Because all
- 7:08Speaker 1: of a sudden wearing their mucking around. So just be
- 7:12Speaker 1: be aware of that. Think about that, don't hunt the
- 7:15Speaker 1: same spots over and over and over again, that you
- 7:18Speaker 1: saw a deer on the opening at a hunting season
- 7:21Speaker 1: and then wonder why is he not here anymore? Think
- 7:24Speaker 1: about how they're adjusting to people going in. And you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: you can do one of two things. You could either
- 7:30Speaker 1: play it safe and you know, just wait until they
- 7:34Speaker 1: become more active in the places that you had pre planned.
- 7:38Speaker 1: That might be the case if you just have a
- 7:40Speaker 1: small property to hunt that you don't want to push
- 7:42Speaker 1: a bunch of deer off of. Or if you have
- 7:44Speaker 1: a whole bunch of places you can hunt, or huge
- 7:46Speaker 1: property or a bunch of public land, you can get
- 7:49Speaker 1: aggressive and try to find out where these deer have
- 7:51Speaker 1: shifted to. UM. So, so that's something I'm thinking about
- 7:54Speaker 1: this time of year. If my season has been open
- 7:56Speaker 1: for three weeks already, that's something I'll be thinking about
- 7:58Speaker 1: in Michigan for sure. One we get to you know,
- 8:01Speaker 1: October fifteen, sixteenth, that ballpark, that'll be when we're really
- 8:06Speaker 1: feeling that in Michigan. UM. But it's an interesting time
- 8:10Speaker 1: of a year. I just kind of had the kick
- 8:13Speaker 1: in the teeth moment where I realized, oh man, in
- 8:16Speaker 1: like two weeks, the absolute marathon begins, like already. Once
- 8:22Speaker 1: September kicked off from me, I was, okay, yeah, it's starting.
- 8:24Speaker 1: But what October shows up, It's just like, buckle up,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you're in for the ride. And uh, that's staring me
- 8:31Speaker 1: right in the hairy eyeball. So that's exciting though. Yeah.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And and both of those strategies that you kind of
- 8:37Speaker 1: just mentioned for the different approaches the opening day, we
- 8:40Speaker 1: hear about that on this week's episode Tyler Frank's Wisconsin.
- 8:45Speaker 1: He went all in on his opener and he killed
- 8:48Speaker 1: the buck. But then you have someone like Michael hunt
- 8:50Speaker 1: Sucker who does very selective calculated pressure um, and he's
- 8:55Speaker 1: kind of doing the thing where you live to fight
- 8:57Speaker 1: another day and you're not over pressuring these dear so
- 9:00Speaker 1: you have more chances later in the season. So you
- 9:03Speaker 1: hear both of those strategies kind of broken down in
- 9:06Speaker 1: this week's episode. Yeah, I love that stuff, hearing about
- 9:09Speaker 1: those different situations. And and I do think that one
- 9:13Speaker 1: of the real art forms or one of the like,
- 9:16Speaker 1: there's there's some kind of threshold that you push through
- 9:20Speaker 1: as a hunter, when you go from just getting out
- 9:23Speaker 1: there and hunting when you can and just doing which
- 9:26Speaker 1: you can, to all of a sudden that next step
- 9:28Speaker 1: when you know when to go all in or you know,
- 9:31Speaker 1: one hang back, Like there's a certain art there that
- 9:34Speaker 1: it takes some time to figure out. But once you do,
- 9:36Speaker 1: when you do know the right time to strike to
- 9:41Speaker 1: really make that kill, that just seems to be such
- 9:43Speaker 1: a big, such a big paradigm shift, I guess as
- 9:47Speaker 1: a hunter. So all that's to say, I'm interested to
- 9:50Speaker 1: hear these guys examples and how one of them knew
- 9:53Speaker 1: it was not the time to push in and go
- 9:55Speaker 1: for broke and one of them said it was and
- 9:57Speaker 1: it worked out maybe, So I am intrigued to listen
- 10:02Speaker 1: to the rest of this episode. Is there anything we
- 10:03Speaker 1: have to cover off on other than a couple housekeeping
- 10:06Speaker 1: things before we do that? Um? No, I don't think so,
- 10:09Speaker 1: but I'll start with one of those housekeeping things. If
- 10:11Speaker 1: you like this kind of info, the uh you know,
- 10:15Speaker 1: up to date on strategies for this timing year, then
- 10:19Speaker 1: you should head over to Meet Eaters YouTube channel, where
- 10:22Speaker 1: you'll see the second episode of a series that me,
- 10:26Speaker 1: Mark and Tony Peterson. You are part of where we
- 10:28Speaker 1: talked about how to kill a buck that time of year.
- 10:31Speaker 1: In the most recent episode, episode two, is about how
- 10:34Speaker 1: to kill a buck in late September, and we talked
- 10:36Speaker 1: about some of those things we just discussed Mark, but
- 10:39Speaker 1: even even greater detail. And then when we're all done
- 10:42Speaker 1: talking about how we would put together a hunt for
- 10:46Speaker 1: late September, we even break down a property. And the
- 10:49Speaker 1: property in this week's episode is a huge piece of
- 10:53Speaker 1: public land in Missouri that Tony Peterson is actually hunted.
- 10:57Speaker 1: So Mark and I take the first step dab at
- 11:00Speaker 1: diagnosing this property and talk about where we would set
- 11:03Speaker 1: up it and why, and then Tony tells us what
- 11:06Speaker 1: we got right and what we got wrong. Basically, Yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 1: it's a it's an interesting one. Did you happen to
- 11:11Speaker 1: see Tony just showed how to kill a buck in
- 11:13Speaker 1: mid September? Yeah? That that guy never fails. It's like
- 11:16Speaker 1: late September and early October. He is always killing. Dear
- 11:21Speaker 1: he knocked on a giant, So I'm gonna try to
- 11:24Speaker 1: have him on the podcast here sooner talk about that
- 11:26Speaker 1: one in more detail too. But yes, definitely check out
- 11:30Speaker 1: the how to Kill a Buck series on YouTube. Also,
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna keep on reminding you folks of this. We've
- 11:36Speaker 1: got this new white Tail Weekly newsletter. That's where all
- 11:40Speaker 1: the white Tail stuff that I'm putting out, that Spencer's
- 11:42Speaker 1: putting out, that the rest of the Meat Eater team
- 11:44Speaker 1: is putting out. That's like the clearinghouse for everything. So
- 11:48Speaker 1: if you go to the meat Eator dot com. Um,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm not sure now if the pop up is still
- 11:54Speaker 1: there to sign for the newsletter, Spencer, I think there's
- 11:56Speaker 1: a new one now, was related to the second piece
- 11:58Speaker 1: of news I have. Um, But if you head there,
- 12:00Speaker 1: you'll see an opportunity, an option to sign up for
- 12:03Speaker 1: the white Tail Weekly Newsletter. Get on that list. Then
- 12:07Speaker 1: you're gonna get the updates about these new videos. You're
- 12:09Speaker 1: gonna get the updates for a new podcast, new articles
- 12:11Speaker 1: that me and Spencer are both writing, and you will
- 12:14Speaker 1: get news such as that which we are announcing in
- 12:18Speaker 1: tomorrow's Wire Done podcast, this episode three oh one, in
- 12:24Speaker 1: which we're sharing some really exciting stuff you may be
- 12:27Speaker 1: already heard about on social media. I'm just gonna tease
- 12:29Speaker 1: it for now. If you want to get a preview,
- 12:32Speaker 1: you can go to the meat eater dot com slash
- 12:34Speaker 1: win a Hunt. It's a big hint right there. But
- 12:38Speaker 1: if you go to meet Eat the meat Eator dot
- 12:40Speaker 1: com slash We're gonna Hunt, you can get a preview
- 12:43Speaker 1: of the special news that myself and Steve Ronella and
- 12:46Speaker 1: Janice Ptelis are gonna be telling you about in tomorrow's
- 12:50Speaker 1: main episode of the podcast. So with that, Spencer, I'm
- 12:54Speaker 1: going to go to bed. It's late. I'll let you
- 12:57Speaker 1: take it from here, all right. Yeah, there's a one
- 13:00Speaker 1: of new content over at meat Eater white Tail Specific
- 13:02Speaker 1: and we're gonna make you guys sick of Mark and I. Yeah,
- 13:06Speaker 1: that might have already happened, Spencer, but for those that
- 13:09Speaker 1: are hanging around, we'll try our best to keep it going.
- 13:11Speaker 1: All right, We'll talk to you next week, all right.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And joining us on the line first is Tyler Frank's
- 13:17Speaker 1: in Wisconsin from ten eighty Outdoors. Now, Tyler in Wisconsin,
- 13:21Speaker 1: what would you say the bucket activity is man lately?
- 13:23Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, I'd probably rate
- 13:26Speaker 1: it and about a four or five. Noticing that the
- 13:30Speaker 1: weather is fairly warm, especially a little above average for
- 13:34Speaker 1: this time of year. What I've been seeing on the
- 13:36Speaker 1: trail cameras the buck movement has gone shifted a lot
- 13:39Speaker 1: more towards night. Um, the bachelor groups have broken up
- 13:43Speaker 1: belt at the shed and then also noticed a lot
- 13:46Speaker 1: of acorns are starting to drop, which just pulled them
- 13:48Speaker 1: off to the food sources. UM. But the heat really
- 13:51Speaker 1: seemed to put a damper on opening weekend activity overall,
- 13:55Speaker 1: not just bucks, but those also. I'm surprised to hear
- 13:59Speaker 1: you say that it's been a four or five because
- 14:01Speaker 1: you happen to kill a great buck over the weekend.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about that setup I did. Um,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I got very fortunate and harvesting and I thought was
- 14:10Speaker 1: opener um just an hour and a half into the season.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But um, leading up to that, I didn't really expect
- 14:17Speaker 1: to be seen much back there. It kind of just
- 14:19Speaker 1: went off of the past history of where I've seen
- 14:22Speaker 1: dear move up on a betting area and where there's
- 14:25Speaker 1: a large amount of acorns. UM. I hunted very close
- 14:29Speaker 1: to their last year and saftmore tea opener and the
- 14:33Speaker 1: weather was a lot more, a lot cooler, UM, So
- 14:37Speaker 1: I kinded I was only out there for an hour
- 14:40Speaker 1: and a half, But um, I had already been seeing
- 14:43Speaker 1: more deer, and then, like I mentioned earlier, the trail
- 14:45Speaker 1: cameras really showed a distinct shift here once the velvet
- 14:51Speaker 1: shed um on the farm. My hunts, it's not uncommon
- 14:55Speaker 1: to have a large amount of shooter gear throughout the
- 14:59Speaker 1: s commer and then once the velvet sheds and they
- 15:03Speaker 1: all split up, and they refuted that. This year, I
- 15:05Speaker 1: had about eight or nine bucks that I was really
- 15:08Speaker 1: looking at targeting, and within the last three weeks I
- 15:13Speaker 1: haven't seen but maybe about thirty of them show back up,
- 15:17Speaker 1: and they had been pretty consistent. But I've got some
- 15:21Speaker 1: weather coming in here this week. Temperatures won't be as hot.
- 15:27Speaker 1: They're still gonna be warm, but with the rain and
- 15:29Speaker 1: temperatures that hopefully will change something and we'll see what
- 15:33Speaker 1: that brings with that buck behavior change that you've noticed
- 15:37Speaker 1: here lately, Have you seen any signmaking start to show up? Then? Actually, yes,
- 15:42Speaker 1: there I have another big reason I set up where
- 15:44Speaker 1: I did opening days because I did find a scrape line.
- 15:47Speaker 1: One of the scrapes is one that's been there that
- 15:50Speaker 1: shows up every year, but it had been hit fairly hard.
- 15:54Speaker 1: And then a couple a couple more scrapes down this
- 15:57Speaker 1: old bogging road that had been worked were pretty fresh,
- 16:01Speaker 1: so that that is something I was encouraged by saying that.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Top of that, like I mentioned there, was the acorns
- 16:10Speaker 1: are definitely dropping right now and they're they're targeting that
- 16:14Speaker 1: as a food source that they seem to have dropped
- 16:16Speaker 1: a ball earlier this year and they're actually probably on
- 16:19Speaker 1: the flowing down, but they're definitely still going after the
- 16:24Speaker 1: You mentioned that you were getting a lot of different
- 16:27Speaker 1: books on trail camera earlier this year, but not so
- 16:30Speaker 1: much anymore. How does your trail camera strategy change as
- 16:33Speaker 1: we get into mid and late September, Well, this year
- 16:37Speaker 1: it will be UM just probably leave them up the
- 16:39Speaker 1: rest of the year and pretty get about them because
- 16:41Speaker 1: I don't have a buck take anymore. But usually in
- 16:45Speaker 1: years past I've I've taken them off off the off
- 16:49Speaker 1: the field the farm. My hunt. He takes his corn
- 16:51Speaker 1: off really early, uses it for silage, and UM we're
- 16:54Speaker 1: pretty much limited to corn and corn and alfalfa. Some
- 16:59Speaker 1: years we have beams, but at this point those are
- 17:01Speaker 1: already started and to draw up at least in western Wisconsin,
- 17:04Speaker 1: and they're really starting to change color. UM and then
- 17:06Speaker 1: I started focusing on more of the the pinch points
- 17:10Speaker 1: in bedding areas and oak flats areas where there's going
- 17:16Speaker 1: to be in transition. UM. I also kind of start
- 17:19Speaker 1: to shift my my my hunting strategy that way. Also,
- 17:23Speaker 1: I started working my way in a little bit off
- 17:25Speaker 1: the field here. Later in the later September and October,
- 17:29Speaker 1: I kind of put all my eggs in the basket
- 17:31Speaker 1: for opening morning and just went I went in pretty
- 17:33Speaker 1: deep opening day, just because that's where I felt I
- 17:37Speaker 1: had the best shot at some nice deer, and because
- 17:40Speaker 1: of the heat, I wanted to be close to the
- 17:41Speaker 1: bedding area with them probably having a little more restricted
- 17:44Speaker 1: morning movement going forward. Then in the sixt week or so,
- 17:47Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 17:49Speaker 1: be on scale of one to ten in Wisconsin, I'd
- 17:52Speaker 1: probably I'd probably only raise it up to about a
- 17:55Speaker 1: five or six just looking at the looking at the
- 17:57Speaker 1: weather I had, and we do have some fronts moving
- 18:00Speaker 1: that it's gonna get a little cooler, but it's still
- 18:01Speaker 1: not going to be a huge swing, at least over
- 18:05Speaker 1: here in western Wisconsin. I think what I saw for
- 18:07Speaker 1: next week was highes in the mid seventies and right
- 18:11Speaker 1: now we're right in the low eighties. So but there
- 18:14Speaker 1: might be some opportunities to get in and find some
- 18:16Speaker 1: dear moving right before after those fronts passed, I noticed
- 18:19Speaker 1: Monday looked really good with some little cooler temperatures than
- 18:23Speaker 1: what they have been and sunny, sunny skies um day.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I would probably look at going, but I have not.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I won't be able to do this year because now
- 18:32Speaker 1: I'll be focusing on bear hunting the rest of the season.
- 18:35Speaker 1: For that, it's a good problem to have. Congrats again
- 18:38Speaker 1: on the awesome dear good luck with that bear tag
- 18:40Speaker 1: in Wisconsin, and thanks for joining me. Appreciate it. Thanks
- 18:43Speaker 1: very much, all right Enjoining us on the line next
- 18:47Speaker 1: is Andrew Maxwell from The Southern Outdoorsman, who's been hunting
- 18:50Speaker 1: in Georgia. Now, Andrew and Georgia, what would you say
- 18:53Speaker 1: the buck activities man lately? On a scale of one
- 18:55Speaker 1: to ten, I would have to say it's probably been
- 18:59Speaker 1: a or a five. You know. The We had quite
- 19:04Speaker 1: a bit of people hunting the public parcel that we
- 19:06Speaker 1: were hunting this weekend, and I know some people saw
- 19:09Speaker 1: some stuff, including myself. I did see one younger buck
- 19:12Speaker 1: on the first morning, but nobody killed anything. Uh No
- 19:16Speaker 1: one saw like a big mature buck. Um. And the
- 19:19Speaker 1: reason I say it's the four or five and not
- 19:20Speaker 1: Lowers because I think that they were out there moving somewhere.
- 19:23Speaker 1: I just think that a lot of us are set
- 19:25Speaker 1: up in the wrong spots. Being with as hot as
- 19:28Speaker 1: it was, I think we set up wrong. When you're
- 19:31Speaker 1: hunting public land on the state's opener like this, how
- 19:35Speaker 1: do you go about avoiding other guys? Uh So, A
- 19:39Speaker 1: big part of that is gonna be, you know, if
- 19:41Speaker 1: you have it previous year's knowledge is really important. Um,
- 19:45Speaker 1: I'll take a day off of hunting and just drive
- 19:47Speaker 1: around and see where other people are part and you know,
- 19:50Speaker 1: try and figure out where the gaps are between them.
- 19:53Speaker 1: If that's not an option, then I mean it really
- 19:55Speaker 1: comes down to just looking at the basic access points
- 19:59Speaker 1: and knowing that most of these guys, especially down in Georgia,
- 20:03Speaker 1: are going to be hauling in bigger, heavy climbers and
- 20:06Speaker 1: they're probably not gonna be walking four yards. Uh So
- 20:10Speaker 1: I essentially got in a little bit later. Uh It's
- 20:13Speaker 1: very like fluid was what I was gonna do, kind
- 20:16Speaker 1: of salvars, and people were parking we're walking in and
- 20:18Speaker 1: then made an effort to kind of swing around them
- 20:21Speaker 1: and get on the escape routes of a deer that
- 20:24Speaker 1: they might have bumped. So just it really comes down
- 20:27Speaker 1: to assuming where that pressure is going to be coming
- 20:30Speaker 1: from and where these people are gonna be parking and
- 20:32Speaker 1: walking to, and then setting up in the gaps between that.
- 20:37Speaker 1: So you said you can't see much for deer activity
- 20:40Speaker 1: when you were down there hunting, how would you now
- 20:43Speaker 1: change your setups looking back on the weekend and knowing
- 20:47Speaker 1: what you know now, Uh, definitely get closer to the river.
- 20:52Speaker 1: So the property we're hunting has a river on it, uh,
- 20:55Speaker 1: and a course down by that river. It is noticeably colder.
- 20:58Speaker 1: I mean it's been in the mid nineties this weekend
- 21:01Speaker 1: and this week so I think that we were hunting
- 21:05Speaker 1: stuff that would probably be good, but it's probably not good.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Was as hot as it is. We were hunting some
- 21:10Speaker 1: thicker cover um just around some regular hardwood essenc smaller creeks.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I think that if we were to have gotten down
- 21:17Speaker 1: by the actual river where it's cooler, I think we
- 21:19Speaker 1: would have done much better, which which seems to be
- 21:22Speaker 1: the case. I have a friend of mine, who's actually
- 21:24Speaker 1: staying down here with me right now, who's hunting that
- 21:26Speaker 1: same property. And he went and hunted the river yesterday
- 21:30Speaker 1: and I saw that he saw two rack bucks and
- 21:32Speaker 1: then had a deer cross the slough behind them coming
- 21:34Speaker 1: off an island. Went to show us that they're definitely
- 21:37Speaker 1: betting on these islands, and they're definitely betting down close
- 21:39Speaker 1: to the water and cooler areas. What do you think
- 21:42Speaker 1: is the preferred food source right now in Georgia? Uh,
- 21:46Speaker 1: that is very It's very dependent on where you're at.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I mean, obviously acorns and for simmons are gonna be
- 21:53Speaker 1: huge right now where you have them. But that being said, uh,
- 21:57Speaker 1: let's say you have a betting area that you're wanting
- 21:59Speaker 1: to hunt and there's not acorns for per simmons within
- 22:03Speaker 1: you know, an easy walking distance of that betting area
- 22:05Speaker 1: and find acorns or per simmons in very close proximity
- 22:09Speaker 1: to water and good cover, I think that's a home run.
- 22:12Speaker 1: If not, if you've got a betting area that's still
- 22:14Speaker 1: got a bunch of native brows in it, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 1: whether it be you know, they're still hammering poke salad
- 22:18Speaker 1: right now, beauty berry and then various other things greenbrier,
- 22:22Speaker 1: basically anything green that if you're canny, I would definitely
- 22:25Speaker 1: key in on that as well. Uh, just because in
- 22:28Speaker 1: years past this time of year, we've killed deer and
- 22:30Speaker 1: have opened them up and they've been full of green stuff,
- 22:33Speaker 1: not necessarily acorns. So uh, I wouldn't get too fixated
- 22:37Speaker 1: on acorns and per simmons unless you can find them
- 22:39Speaker 1: in the right spot. Does that make sense? Early season
- 22:43Speaker 1: like this, what do your morning setups look like and
- 22:45Speaker 1: how did those differ from your evening setups. My morning setups,
- 22:50Speaker 1: I'm typically gonna be pretty aggressive. I mean, obviously it's
- 22:53Speaker 1: early season, and I don't want to blow out my
- 22:55Speaker 1: good spots, so I kind of have backup spots around
- 22:59Speaker 1: kind areas that I'm not super interested in, but I
- 23:02Speaker 1: think I could have a good chance of maybe nailing
- 23:05Speaker 1: a buck but also just a dough, uh. And I'll
- 23:07Speaker 1: be getting in very close to bedding, and I'll be
- 23:10Speaker 1: setting up on basically where I think they're gonna enter
- 23:12Speaker 1: back into that, and I'll get in, you know, way
- 23:14Speaker 1: before daylight, and I hopefully have something slipped by me. Um.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Afternoons are basically the opposite in the afternoons. You know,
- 23:21Speaker 1: it's much lower risks. So I will go to some
- 23:23Speaker 1: of my better areas in the afternoons, and uh, we're
- 23:27Speaker 1: gonna be focusing in the next week. Like tomorrow, I'm
- 23:30Speaker 1: going out and be hitting the staging area. Um. We're
- 23:33Speaker 1: basically we got some thick you know, anybody in the
- 23:35Speaker 1: South can be familiar with, like thick pines, like old cutovers,
- 23:38Speaker 1: cutovers probably seven or eight years old. Now it's really
- 23:41Speaker 1: good deer cover. Um. And we got a a wheat
- 23:45Speaker 1: field on this place that we're hunting, and the deer
- 23:47Speaker 1: hitting that wheat stilled pretty hard. But in between there
- 23:50Speaker 1: there's this nice, beautiful little hardwood flat. It's got some
- 23:54Speaker 1: privet and stuff down there. It's kind of thick, there's
- 23:56Speaker 1: some acorns in it, and it's to tour up with
- 23:58Speaker 1: fresh rubs everywhere. So that's gonna be my set up
- 24:01Speaker 1: in the afternoon. I'm gonna try and slip down in
- 24:03Speaker 1: there and get within a hundred yards of where they're
- 24:07Speaker 1: probably bedded. Uh, and hopefully they come out and stage
- 24:10Speaker 1: up right there before moving on to the major destination
- 24:13Speaker 1: food source going forward. Then in the six week or so,
- 24:16Speaker 1: what do you think that buckettt is going to be
- 24:18Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. In Georgia, I'm
- 24:21Speaker 1: gonna say it's probably gonna be like seven or eight. Uh. Tomorrow,
- 24:26Speaker 1: we actually have a good cold front moving in, which
- 24:28Speaker 1: in the South is gonna that means it's gonna go
- 24:30Speaker 1: from eighty five. Uh. But in the mornings it's gonna
- 24:34Speaker 1: be nice and cool. I think Friday morning it's gonna
- 24:37Speaker 1: be high fifties, which is gonna be phenomenal. Uh. That
- 24:40Speaker 1: ought to really get them on their feet and moving.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I mean they've already been pretty active close to dark.
- 24:46Speaker 1: We keep driving by this one field as we leave
- 24:48Speaker 1: and every night we're seeing books in it, you know,
- 24:51Speaker 1: thirty to forty minutes after dark. So hopefully that cold
- 24:54Speaker 1: front really gets a moving better. And a lot more
- 24:57Speaker 1: acorns and for simmons are starting to drop now, so
- 25:00Speaker 1: that'll just hopefully concentrate them a little bit. All right, Andrew, Well,
- 25:04Speaker 1: good luck to you and the guys from Southern Outdoors
- 25:06Speaker 1: been thanks for joining me. Thanks better all right and
- 25:09Speaker 1: joining us on the line. Next is Keith Thompson from
- 25:12Speaker 1: Montana White Tails Inc. In Montana. Now, Keith in Montana,
- 25:16Speaker 1: what would you say the buck activity has been landy
- 25:18Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten. As far as
- 25:21Speaker 1: movement goes, i'd probably I'd probably give it a seven
- 25:24Speaker 1: or eight. I mean, we have some clients out and
- 25:27Speaker 1: they're all seeing a lot of deer, and some good deer.
- 25:30Speaker 1: The big deer are still on their feet. Um. From
- 25:33Speaker 1: a harvesting standpoint, it's been a little tough. Everything so
- 25:37Speaker 1: green and so tall this year. We've talked to some
- 25:40Speaker 1: ranchers that they said they can't even remember having this
- 25:43Speaker 1: much hey in the last thirty years. Um. This is
- 25:47Speaker 1: just for example. Some of the field that we generally
- 25:49Speaker 1: hunt that are normally a foot to a foot and
- 25:53Speaker 1: a half tall, at this time of the year, we
- 25:55Speaker 1: have some took some photos that they're up over six
- 25:58Speaker 1: ft tall. I mean the deer you can you can
- 26:01Speaker 1: barely see them walking through it. So activity wise for
- 26:04Speaker 1: sighting has been good, but as far as harvesting goes,
- 26:07Speaker 1: it's been a little tough. We've killed a few good books,
- 26:10Speaker 1: but it's it's been tougher than in past years, that's
- 26:13Speaker 1: for sure. You hear of white tails often bedding down
- 26:17Speaker 1: in like corn fields and bean fields, but will you
- 26:20Speaker 1: find that they also bed down in hay fields. And
- 26:22Speaker 1: how has that changed then with this Hey, that's been
- 26:25Speaker 1: so tall. Yeah, it's it's been tough. Um. We we hunted,
- 26:29Speaker 1: predominantly hunted, try to hunt the river bottoms in the
- 26:31Speaker 1: morning for the bedding, and it's been like just like
- 26:36Speaker 1: you said that there's that much Hey, is that or
- 26:39Speaker 1: the wheat field of that tall everything that the deer
- 26:42Speaker 1: aren't even coming down into the river bottoms. They're just
- 26:44Speaker 1: they're hitting the alphastle fields and may everything else is
- 26:47Speaker 1: that tall, they'll just lay in it. They So it's
- 26:50Speaker 1: been it's been quite challenging early as far as, like
- 26:53Speaker 1: you said, as the harvesting goes. Now, we had the
- 26:56Speaker 1: full moon this last weekend. How does that change your
- 26:59Speaker 1: guys a strateg g Oh, well, basically trying to get
- 27:03Speaker 1: in on them without blowing them out. And it's been
- 27:05Speaker 1: so bright, I mean, crossing the river and everything you
- 27:08Speaker 1: can see cloud across the river. There's no need for
- 27:10Speaker 1: flashlights this week, that's for sure. Um, you know, it's
- 27:15Speaker 1: it changes it a little bit, but predominantly we're still
- 27:18Speaker 1: doing the same thing. I mean, we're on betting. We're
- 27:20Speaker 1: getting guys into the betting in the morning and then,
- 27:22Speaker 1: and I said, even from activity standpoint, it hasn't seemed
- 27:25Speaker 1: affected too bad, So it's been a plus. You mentioned
- 27:29Speaker 1: that you're seeing a lot of deer this time of year,
- 27:31Speaker 1: but does that mean that you're still seeing the bucks
- 27:33Speaker 1: traveling together and those bachelor groups are still together. Yeah,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I would say so. We've had a lot of our
- 27:39Speaker 1: clients coming back at night talent and even in the
- 27:42Speaker 1: morning and at night coming back telling us that typically
- 27:45Speaker 1: when they've been seeing the deer, it's been the it's
- 27:48Speaker 1: been the does and the fawns, and and you know
- 27:51Speaker 1: some young bucks, uh year link bucks coming out together,
- 27:55Speaker 1: and they've they've taken notice that once they started seeing
- 27:59Speaker 1: a little bit higher age structure class here, that it's
- 28:02Speaker 1: been strings of five or six books that are of
- 28:05Speaker 1: the higher age class. So I would definitely say, yes,
- 28:07Speaker 1: they're they're bachelor up. Yet to the envy of many hunters,
- 28:11Speaker 1: you guys are white tail hunting in an area that
- 28:14Speaker 1: also has elk. So do you notice that this time
- 28:17Speaker 1: of year, during the elk rot, that maybe those elk
- 28:20Speaker 1: are pushing some deer awful food sources or off of
- 28:22Speaker 1: water holes or anything like that. We we do see
- 28:26Speaker 1: a division there. Um, there's the elk like there's seemed
- 28:31Speaker 1: to congregate. There's there's two big alfalfa field that they
- 28:35Speaker 1: tend to stick to every every early season for us
- 28:40Speaker 1: um and we actually we've kill some elk out of
- 28:43Speaker 1: deer stands already. M As far as the separation goes,
- 28:47Speaker 1: I would say so it just seems that the deer
- 28:51Speaker 1: just more or less kind of stay away from them.
- 28:52Speaker 1: They don't they don't intermingle too much. If if it's
- 28:56Speaker 1: a big alfa alfa field, you'll see some deer out
- 28:58Speaker 1: there with the elk, but there they they definitely keep
- 29:00Speaker 1: their distance going forward. Then, in the next week or so,
- 29:03Speaker 1: what do you think that buck activity is going to
- 29:05Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in Montana? Well,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I hope it's high. Uh. I'd say I'd keep it
- 29:11Speaker 1: around a seven or so somewhere around there. Um, it's
- 29:16Speaker 1: been pretty good. I'm hoping we actually can get some
- 29:19Speaker 1: cold leather here and maybe kill off some of this
- 29:22Speaker 1: this green. But I know, I'm sure we've probably got
- 29:25Speaker 1: a few more weeks for than green yet. But I'll
- 29:28Speaker 1: be optimistic and try and keep it at a seven
- 29:30Speaker 1: and eight. Alright, Keith for good luck to your clients
- 29:33Speaker 1: at Montana White Tails, Inc. Thanks for joining me, Thank
- 29:36Speaker 1: you all right and joining us on the line. Last
- 29:39Speaker 1: is Mike han Sucker in Missouri from Heartland bow Hunter. Now,
- 29:43Speaker 1: Mike in Missouri. What would you say the buck activity
- 29:45Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten,
- 29:48Speaker 1: I would probably say yes, seven. Um, it's been really
- 29:52Speaker 1: surprising actually as hot as it's been. Um, we've been
- 29:55Speaker 1: seen some really good activity and actually even seen some too, dude,
- 29:58Speaker 1: only you know two nights. This is the third Matta
- 30:01Speaker 1: season right now, so but I've been surprised. Actually when
- 30:05Speaker 1: it's been so hot, does that change any of your strategies?
- 30:08Speaker 1: Are you still hunting some destination food sources there? We've
- 30:12Speaker 1: been hunting food sources, um, mainly clover and actually surprisingly
- 30:19Speaker 1: the past few hot days, the deer really been keying
- 30:22Speaker 1: on a bone yard plot, which is a classica tourn
- 30:26Speaker 1: of Radish mix. They've really been him and those which
- 30:29Speaker 1: usually they don't really hit too much till later in
- 30:31Speaker 1: the year. So it's been interesting because every you know,
- 30:34Speaker 1: all the buck activity we've been seeing has been on
- 30:36Speaker 1: those plots, which unfortunately most of our set up in
- 30:39Speaker 1: north winds, so we've been having to set the clover
- 30:42Speaker 1: and had some good action, but there's not not any
- 30:45Speaker 1: Bucks in me. How do you see those preferred food
- 30:48Speaker 1: sources changing throughout the month of September. Do you think
- 30:51Speaker 1: they're going to be consistently on those couple of plots
- 30:53Speaker 1: that you were just talking about or is that going
- 30:55Speaker 1: to switch? Well, I mean a lot of times, you know,
- 30:58Speaker 1: do you you know employeeaans right now them are still green,
- 31:00Speaker 1: but they're just starting to turn um some you know,
- 31:02Speaker 1: opendion when they were playing it. So as those being
- 31:06Speaker 1: fields change, you'll definitely see a shift in in the
- 31:08Speaker 1: deer and in the sources that they kind of key on.
- 31:11Speaker 1: And so colovis huge, usually really really good plot for October.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Get those uh those North Wayne cold fronts in October
- 31:18Speaker 1: and Colover plots can be awesome. But I'm definitely keep
- 31:20Speaker 1: an eye on some of the phone your plots to
- 31:23Speaker 1: keep utilizing them. How about bachelor groups. Are you still
- 31:25Speaker 1: seeing bucks traveling together? Absolutely? Yeah, yep, call all the
- 31:30Speaker 1: Bucks for the most part, you know, they're still that's
- 31:34Speaker 1: that's that pretty good. It's just send some young bucks
- 31:36Speaker 1: hanging out with those. Now, we just had a full
- 31:38Speaker 1: moon for missouries opener. Does that change what you're doing?
- 31:42Speaker 1: It on what your setups are like? You know, I
- 31:44Speaker 1: don't pay a ton of attention to the moon, and honestly, um,
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, I don't know how that that is really effective,
- 31:49Speaker 1: but I mean it's definitely you know, seeing seeing the
- 31:52Speaker 1: bucks you know, move around those a little bit. Scrapes
- 31:54Speaker 1: were actually starting to open up. Past couple of days,
- 31:57Speaker 1: I've seen some new scrapes open up and it seems
- 32:00Speaker 1: couldn't though, so they're definitely starting to. Yeah, kind of uh,
- 32:03Speaker 1: you know, get out of the summer routine and get
- 32:06Speaker 1: more into the scrapes that you're seeing opened up for
- 32:09Speaker 1: those kind of the community scrapes on field edges. Are
- 32:12Speaker 1: you seeing some more like individualized scrapes that specific bucks
- 32:17Speaker 1: are making on specific trails. Yeah, I think it's one
- 32:19Speaker 1: of the social thing for sure, you know, I like
- 32:22Speaker 1: shed velvet, rubbing, rubbing on trees and hitting, lifting branches
- 32:25Speaker 1: and the type of stuff. So it's definitely stuff near
- 32:28Speaker 1: You knows, where are your trail cameras at this time
- 32:32Speaker 1: of year and how is that going to change as
- 32:35Speaker 1: we get to the end of September and the beginning
- 32:36Speaker 1: of October right now, most of them are on food sources,
- 32:40Speaker 1: UM edges of foot plots, you know, trail waiting into
- 32:42Speaker 1: food plots. UM. I do have a couple on those
- 32:46Speaker 1: those freshness scrapes that the opening up, but as obviously
- 32:49Speaker 1: we train usen in October and the stape starting ripped part.
- 32:52Speaker 1: That's my favorite, you know, favorite place to have cameras
- 32:55Speaker 1: on scrape and it's one of the best times of
- 32:57Speaker 1: year to get pictures about especially UM eating c w
- 33:01Speaker 1: D zones Like we're in our farm, Missouri, but we
- 33:04Speaker 1: can't you know, put out any any sort of attackants
- 33:07Speaker 1: having those scrapes. Is speaking of cw D. I know
- 33:11Speaker 1: parts of Missouri have been dealing with e h D
- 33:13Speaker 1: here late in the summer. Is that something that has
- 33:15Speaker 1: affected you guys. Yeah, we haven't knock on wood. We
- 33:19Speaker 1: haven't had any uh, I haven't had anything happened that
- 33:23Speaker 1: we've seen. But I know a lot of people in
- 33:25Speaker 1: southern Iowa, a lot of people in North sent from
- 33:27Speaker 1: a very northwest Missouri. I didn't hit bad and it's
- 33:30Speaker 1: wiped them out. And it's kind of my right this
- 33:33Speaker 1: year because you know, e h D is a here
- 33:35Speaker 1: of on a grout year. Um, we've had you know, heavy,
- 33:38Speaker 1: heavy range and lots of lots of moisture the springs.
- 33:42Speaker 1: But since the moisture of spring, we've had a a
- 33:45Speaker 1: lot of heat and that those waters that was you know,
- 33:48Speaker 1: resessing and coming down. Um, it's causing a late late
- 33:52Speaker 1: bloom of h D unfortunately. No, I know you guys
- 33:55Speaker 1: do a lot of setups from the ground where you're
- 33:57Speaker 1: hunting out of saying hey, bail blind Are you hesitant
