- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to another episode of Cash Color Cannabis, a high level of conversation.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I'm your host, Mecca.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Today we're talking about cannabis, culture, history, and storytelling with JM Balbuena.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: JM is a creative mind behind the Green Renaissance, a project that takes a look at the history of cannabis.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Her latest vision involves her taking the Green Renaissance and giving it an entire new life.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: So through our conversation, we discussed the inspiration behind the Green Renaissance, the importance in preserving cannabis history, working with Lizzie Jeff to create the sound of the Green Renaissance and how she's using creativity to push the culture forward.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I guess Cash Color Campus is a high level of conversation.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And um this is actually a return visit for some of what for us.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Y'all probably seen the last time I was with JU, we were in um MJ Biz matter of fact.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: We did the live one on the floor.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: That was the first time I met you in person, too.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I remember being so so nervous about pronouncing your name because I'm so spec about names.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I was like, is it Balboina?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Just make sure I'm saying it right.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: I remember you said it correctly.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: But um for y'all who don't know, uh, we last time we spoke, we spoke about her book, The Green Renaissance, which is an amazing book.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: She chronicles cannabis throughout the history, throughout history, you know, and talks about just overall the plan.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And right now she's in a process of elevating that experience in another way.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So that's what we're gonna be talking about today.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So, first off, Jay, thank you so much for joining us today.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And um talk to us again just about the Green Renaissance and talk to us about the beginning of the original vision.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Like, how did that come to you?
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: So it came to me, you know, well, first and foremost and foremost, thank you for for the uh the podcast, you know, getting your platform open to having the conversation.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: So really appreciate it.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: But um, yeah, the Green Renaissance, um I kind of as an advocate, you know, I've been an advocate um since I got into the cannabis space um with respect to, you know, because when I joined, I joined as a patient, um, dealing with um my military background and some of the repercussions from an accident there.
- 2:37SPEAKER_03: And just I started doing so much research to justify my consumption, you know, to my family, hardcore Christians, and you know, uh gateway drug narrative type of situation.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: And so even I kind of had a little bit of my bias when it came to that, but it helped me so much that I kind of wanted whenever somebody brought up uh, oh, you this is a drug or this is a this or this is a that, um, I kind of wanted to have like a scientific answer or like some.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: So I did so much research, and um, I'm a writer, like I love writing, and eventually with all that research, and after even writing my first book, which was about the fit the uh business of cannabis, I kind of wanted to write like a manual for the advocate, like where you can find a bunch of information that is backed by historical facts, you know, with with sources.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: And so I started writing the book.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: And um took me five years uh with like most of it being doing the research and confirming um certain facts and things in different because you know I do a whole global coverage.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Um and so just you know, had to go into like libraries of Congress of different countries and things like that to confirm certain things.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: And so then I started writing and putting it, you know, telling the story.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: And so that that's where it came from.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Um, and so I published the the actual book in 2024, and now in 2026, we have the audiobook that's available and a few other things that we're putting together.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Applause for you because you know the the things do need, especially when it comes to information, needs to be put in digestible ways for people nowadays, especially the ways that many people try to consume information, whether it's video, whether it's audio, like things need to be digestible.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: You did a good job of doing that.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: I also feel bad that you had to go through all that to justify your own consumption.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: That is crazy.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think a lot of us that, especially like when we're doing it for medicinal purposes, um, I had trouble sleeping from the concussion that I had when I was in the military.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: And to this day, the only thing that helps me um consistently is cannabis.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: And so, you know, just growing up, you know, in a hardcore Christian household, you know, having to tell my mom, oh, so how are you sleeping now?
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: Like, what helped you?
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: You know, well, weed.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: And so um that that I kind of was preparing.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: My my mom is like a very intellectual person, she and very logical too.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: So I kind of wanted to have those answers like ready.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: Um, besides just like, well, I'm just and then my favorite way of consumption is smoking, but you know, finding out that there were so many different ways to consume that didn't have to be um smoking and just bringing that up as well, you know, from an educated standpoint.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: You know what is super dope about this.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So recently I've been working on a series called The Weed Episodes, where I start looking at black sitcoms over time and how each one of them dealt with the weed episodes.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: You know, almost every show had a weed episode, right?
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: And hearing your conversation is tying into so much of those shows because every one of those shows had a different way of handling weed.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: But it wasn't until like 2020, 2021 that they started being a little bit more um getting into getting into why people consume, getting to how you consume.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Like I was just watching an episode of Blackish where the entire conversation wasn't about it wasn't about whether or not you're consuming was whether or not, you know, you're le matter of fact, Junior said it best, I'm an adult and I'm in a legal state, which turned the conversation to something way different than when I was watching Parenthood and they're trying to trick their son into smoking tea versus weed to show them how bad it is.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Like it's crazy, you know.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: And you know, one now that you bring up TV, I would say starting in the 2022, 2020, 2020, and on, I would say, is when the TV started um posting cannabis as like a novel where they the where it wasn't the villain just consuming cannabis.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: So so it's really good to see, you know, as a filmmaker, like I couldn't wait to spot those things, you know, in in in film, which it's pretty much normalization in motion.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I love it.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite shows right now is Survival of the Thickest on on Netflix, and I love how they use cannabis in the way they use it.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: It's it's between friendships.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: It was on like one person was going through a miscarriage, she was using it to go through pain of that.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Yeah, this is what we need.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: We need more of this.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: Because it's real, that's the reality.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Most people consume for that, you know, for a specific purpose, whether it's to feel better mentally, to take the edge off at the end of the day, to deal with concussion, concussive headaches, and sleep disorders and things of that nature.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Um, but even more so, like moms, they use it uh for like pain, you know, again, mental health and things like that.
- 7:40SPEAKER_03: I know the mom situation is it's a super charged topic.
- 7:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, right.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: But you know, cannabis does help women, and and you know, I'm not a mother, so I can't speak anecdotally with that, but I know plenty of of women that uh consume cannabis uh to help them with many, many different things that come with being a parent.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah, and not to sidetrack you.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: You know, we are here to talk about the green renaissance, but you just brought up something that was around something I'm working on anyway.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: But um, speaking about the green renaissance, I had a chance to preview the animated version of it.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: And I actually was I was loving it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I was loving it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I watched um two of the episodes you had sent me, and I was just like so bright.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I was like, this is dope how she did this.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: What made you want to take it to an animated version and um also speak to us about the use of AI because how controversial that is for people in some manners?
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: What made you want to make this animated and what made you want to take the AI route?
- 8:36SPEAKER_03: So the AI route was a little bit cheaper.
- 8:39SPEAKER_03: Um, I've I've done animated episodes of of different things that uh that I wanted to do, and it's so expensive.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Um, and so, and I have to hire somebody else to do it.
- 8:51SPEAKER_03: And so with the AI, I'm not gonna lie to you, I had an accident, well, not an accident, I had a surgery.
- 8:57SPEAKER_03: Um, and I was um sitting down for two months in the Dominican Republic.
- 9:03SPEAKER_03: Um, I had a cyst on my leg and it was removed, and so I couldn't put any weight on my leg for two months, and so I was on my computer a lot.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: And so um I started by animating like the cover of the book, you know, because I'm thinking, oh, let me use AI or learn how to do it to do certain things to promote the audiobook.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: And so as I was doing the animation of the cover and like different things, I'm like, oh my gosh, it would be really cool to um, since I do the historical thing to like have the character on the cover, which is a photo shoot of me, but um a few years ago, that same character gets from the book and goes into the different stories that I talk about.
- 9:48SPEAKER_03: And then I saw a friend of mine that has uh shout out to her because um she's actually an actress that I met at uh ABFF, the American Black Film Festival um a few years ago.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: And she with AI was doing those things of traveling back into time, and I was like, and I even DM'd her, I was like, girl, I'm gonna I want to do this for my book as well, because that that you know it would be like the perfect situation.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: And so I had those two months to just like learn how to do AI.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: It's so many iterations because you know, AI still, you know, not super accurate, but it worked out, and and I was able to do six episodes, and and that's coming out soon, you know.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: As somebody who who had to teach himself how to use AI properly, similar to how you did too.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: I wasn't injured, but I just had about six months of time and I was like, damn, I don't have nothing else to do.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Let me try this.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: One thing about AI that's crazy to me is AI doesn't create anything, it recreates, which is why you keep getting something over, like if you try to fix something, it just looks a little bit stranger than what you just did.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: So it took so much time.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: How much time did it take you to kind of like just get that to where it looked, where it looks now, which is pretty accurate?
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: So it took, it took a lot.
- 11:02SPEAKER_03: Like I would say the one that took me the most was the first couple of episodes because you know, to make the character be consistent, that's the first thing.
- 11:11SPEAKER_03: The first thing that you gotta do and make is make sure that the character is consistent, and even more so you will see as the you know, episode one, even the clothing, which is wasn't supposed to change, it changed.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: But with AI, what you have to do is just accept certain changes that you know may not be that different, but um, so you'll see like the different changes that are subtle, like I noticed them because that's not what I asked it to do exactly, you know.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: But but what you do is different iterations and different um uh versions, and then you just cut it.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: Like that that I feel like with with with AI, um what you do the most is like you render, right?
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Like once you have something, and then you cut it to the things that you like that came out how you wanted it, and then um cut into when you create another uh segment, and you gotta do it in like I wouldn't so at first I was trying to do like an entire episode at once, and and they're like about a minute each.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: Don't ever do that.
- 12:15SPEAKER_03: You have to do it in like 10 seconds, like five to ten, maybe not more than 12 second intervals of like what you want.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Um, and and that you can stitch them together, and I think that worked out pretty well by the fourth one.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: I already had my system and it worked out pretty well.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Hey, again, applause to you, especially as an editor, director, because you put that together.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: You really shouldn't do this all at one time.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Let me piece this together because congrats, salute to you.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Like I realized yesterday it takes me three hours to do the little clips that I just put online.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Basically, the one about blackish took me three hours to do that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: I would say if I hadn't had that time of sitting down for those two months, I don't think it would have been able to be done.
- 13:00SPEAKER_03: I don't I can't sit still for that long.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: And and I had to because you know I I had I couldn't put any weight on my leg, so I was sitting down the back.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: What I like as well is that you're also making a musical, um, you're making a musical companion to the Green Renaissance this round, and you're doing it in collaboration with a good friend of ours, a good friend of the show, Lizzie Jeff.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: How did you how did you connect with Lizzie Jeff?
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Because Lizzie, I I tell people all the time, Lizzie's an amazing human being when you actually get to know her.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: Like on you see her on social media, you might think she's like overwhelming, but no, she's actually a super sweet look young lady.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: She is amazing.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: She's amazing.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: I actually met her.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: Shout out to a pretty high club in in Florida.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: I went to the club.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Giovanna.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, shout out to Giovanna.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: So um she was she DJ, she had an appearance at a pretty pretty high um event.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: And so I met her there, and I kind of had the idea, probably smoking something one day.
- 14:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, I should probably do a playlist, you know, to tell to uh just as another, and I had that idea even before the AI thing.
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: So and I had hit Lizzie once as soon as I got the idea, I that Lizzie came to my mind, especially because that goddess code is one of my favorite song songs, and I'm like, that has to be on the on the playlist.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: So I hit her up and she was super down, she was so welcoming, and so we've been working on it ever since.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: And and now we have that playlist together, it should be out here in a couple of days.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: Um, and we're super excited about it.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be the Green Renaissance sessions, and uh we're excited to put that out, but it's been a great collaboration because what she did, you know, she gave me um her playlist, and so I added some of my songs, and so what I did was I took the playlist and kind of like put it in an order that to tell a story, and I'm really happy to be collaborating with Catch Color Cannabis to pretty much put an editorial piece so people understand why the playlist um is in the order that it that it is and how it tells the story of cannabis um intentionally.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Look, I'm a huge, huge supporter of telling stories in different formats, and music is one of the formats you can tell stories to.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, I was definitely down to help with this collaboration, and especially when Lizzie's involved, because Lizzie, like I say, is another form of energy that I don't know if many people even got to meet yet, but she adds so much extra, especially to her own music.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: And it's just I'm glad that this is really an intentional collaboration that you two guys are doing.
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm super thankful for her to be, you know, so open to do it when I hit her up.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: And you know, just like the magical vibes that she puts out, she's been really cool and she's she's taken the book Grand Renaissance with her wherever she goes, and and I love the support that she's you know, and the pizzazz that she's brought to the brand.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: So in this in the animated version, you go to various countries and various different times in the world, which which was a side note, that would have scared the hell out of me.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Like I always tell people why I couldn't be in an Avenger movie or a Marvel movie, because don't send me back in time to meet my parents when they was about to meet because I don't want to be there for that day.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: If you could go back in time in actuality to any of those places, like which one of those places would you want to go and actually have be a kind of a fly on the wall?
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: So my I would say like my two favorites were when uh one of the episodes is going back to like the jazz golden era, like the 1930s and 40s.
- 16:33SPEAKER_03: Um, so that was one of my favorite.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: I even say it when I am in it as an AI character, I'm like, whoa, this is the dopest uh time uh time period and everything.
- 16:44SPEAKER_03: So that one just because of the music, you know, just the people now that is the beginning of prohibition.
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: So, you know, even though the teapets were bumping and everything was dope, you also had that lingering uh darkness, you know, of what was about to happen and you know what began and how people were being started being persecuted um by uh Harry Anslinger then.
- 17:09SPEAKER_03: But also like the I went back, one of the episodes goes back to ancient Egypt.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: Yes, yeah.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: So that's one of my favorites too.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: Um, and so you know, I won't spill the beans too much because I want people to to watch, but you know, it was very extravagant, you know, with the pharaohs and you know, the big buildings and all those things, and and that was really cool to to recreate and showcase.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: And that one is the one where I remember just watching and being like, I would be so mad if I was stuck in Egypt, it dressed as I am, because it's so hot, right?
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: So hot.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Facts, facts.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: But but again, it's an amazing idea and it's an amazing concept.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: And I think it's so dope that you're that you're going back in time and doing this.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Is there any possibilities that you're gonna expand out on it in any way?
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Like I know you already have the Green Renaissance, but are you thinking about even going back in time and say adding in chapters now that you can do it through AI and going to different places that you haven't touched on in the book already?
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so that's this is gonna be the first season.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Um I think what I'm gonna do um is the next season will because I stop at the beginning of Prohibition.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: So I kind of want to go back in time up until like we get to this time.
- 18:27SPEAKER_03: Um so the second, the second, which is the second half of the book, I'm gonna go um and I don't know if I'll go back in time because you know, maybe I'll get stuck in time.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: I'm kidding.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: But you know, because they were that's when they went off with the war on drugs, and you know, uh our people were the one that they're the grunt of that.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Um, but I do wanna showcase to how that's not that far away, you know, that this is literally our past, but it just happened not too long.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Our parents were alive, our grandparents were alive.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, our grandparents were alive during the 1930s and 40s for most, you know, for millennials at least.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Um and so I just wanted to, you know, bring that juxtaposition into you know the viewers' uh perspective as well, just to let people know, like, yeah, that happened, but it's not that long ago.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: Um even though we've come like super far away, um, but but to your question, I do think that perhaps I will try to uh capture like other countries, um things that happen in in other countries, like in maybe some European countries.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: I do go back another good episode is uh the colonization era.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: That I you I don't know if you got to see that one, but that one um it's a little bit funny.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: I I made that a little bit.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Let me let me go back because that might have been another one where I would have been like like in my heart scared for you.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: Like, girl, please don't get started.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: You should check that one out because that one's like I actually made it almost like a com like a comedy, uh comedic type of uh vibe.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: But you know, cognizant of what was going to happen or what was happening in in those moments.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: Um but I would say, you know, a lot of different African countries and and even in Latin America, even though one of the episodes does go to Mexico as well.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: And this the six episodes, it's um ancient China, ancient India, ancient Egypt, um colonization in the Americas, um Mexico, you know, around the Civil War time period, and then the jazz era.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: So those are you're actually giving me an idea.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Like the next um short series we're working on for Patreon is gonna be about blunts and how and blunt culture and how that came about.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'd love to go back in time to realize who's the first person that said, you know what, let's not use this joint, let's bust this whole joint down and this stuff we're putting in there and see if that works.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Who's that person?
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we got to do that research to find out.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Oh damn it, you done gave me work now.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: No, but let me know because we can, if you want to, we can collaborate on that and and do something super dope.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, and speaking of collaboration, because this is your whole entire project is really um is is based on collaboration, you know, the work you're doing with myself, the work you're doing with Lizzie, it's all based on collaboration.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Speak to us how important it is for a creative like yourself and like myself as well to work through with other people to collaborate to make these projects a lot bigger.
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it's paramount.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: I think um, like for instance, I love music, um, but Lizzie is somebody that that is her forte.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: That's you know her creative.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: She's a creative in in many regards, and so am I.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: But you know, I wanted to bring somebody in that can bring that perspective of music from you know, from what.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: They do.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: I'm more of the listener.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: She has more of that ear of like the why.
