- 0:01Speaker 1: Chapter seven. When our father Adam saw that Seth was
- 0:05Speaker 1: of a perfect heart, he wished him to marry, lest
- 0:08Speaker 1: the enemy should appear to him another time and overcome him.
- 0:12Speaker 1: So Adam said to his son Seth, I wish, o,
- 0:15Speaker 1: my son, that you wedge your sister aclia able sister,
- 0:19Speaker 1: that she may bear you children who shall replenish the
- 0:22Speaker 1: earth according to God's promise to us. Be not afraid,
- 0:25Speaker 1: my son, there is no disgrace in it. I wish
- 0:28Speaker 1: you to marry from fear that if you do not,
- 0:31Speaker 1: the enemy could overcome you. Seth, however, did not wish
- 0:35Speaker 1: to marry, but in obedience to his father and mother,
- 0:38Speaker 1: he did not say a word. So Adam married him
- 0:40Speaker 1: to a Clia, and he was fifteen years old. But
- 0:43Speaker 1: when he was twenty years of age, he had a
- 0:45Speaker 1: son whom he caught enos Enoch, and then had other children.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Then Enos grew up married and begat Canaan. Canaan also
- 0:55Speaker 1: grew up married and begat Mahalalel. Those fathers were born
- 1:00Speaker 1: during Adam's lifetime and dwelt by the Cave of Treasures.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Then were the days of Adam nine hundred and thirty years,
- 1:07Speaker 1: and those of Mahalalel one hundred. But Mahalalel, when he
- 1:10Speaker 1: was grown up, loved fasting, praying, and with hard work
- 1:15Speaker 1: until the end of our father Adam's days drew near
- 1:22Speaker 1: Chapter eight. When our father Adam saw that his end
- 1:25Speaker 1: was near, he called his son Seth, who came to
- 1:28Speaker 1: him in the cave of Treasures, and he said to him, Seth,
- 1:32Speaker 1: my son, bring me your children and your children's children,
- 1:36Speaker 1: so that I may shed my blessing on them before
- 1:38Speaker 1: I die. When Seth heard these words from his father Adam,
- 1:41Speaker 1: he went from him, shed a flood of tears over
- 1:44Speaker 1: his face, and gathered together his children and his children's children,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and brought them to his father Adam. But when our
- 1:51Speaker 1: father Adam saw them around him, he wept at having
- 1:54Speaker 1: to be separated from them. And when they saw him weeping,
- 1:57Speaker 1: they all wept together and kissed his face, saying, how
- 2:01Speaker 1: shall you be separated from us, father? And how shall
- 2:04Speaker 1: the earth receive you and hide you from our eyes?
- 2:07Speaker 1: Thus they lamented with words like these. Then our father
- 2:10Speaker 1: Adam blessed them all and said to Seth, after he
- 2:13Speaker 1: had blessed them, Seth, my son, you know this world
- 2:17Speaker 1: and that it is full of sorrow and of weariness.
- 2:20Speaker 1: And you know all that has come upon us from
- 2:22Speaker 1: our trials in it. So I command you in these words.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I want you to keep being innocent, to be pure
- 2:29Speaker 1: and just and trusting in God. And do not believe
- 2:32Speaker 1: the words of Satan, nor the apparitions in which he
- 2:35Speaker 1: will show himself to you. But keep the commandments that
- 2:37Speaker 1: I give you this day. Then give the same to
- 2:40Speaker 1: your son Enos, and let Enos give it to a
- 2:42Speaker 1: son Canaan, and Canaan to his son Mahalealeou, so that
- 2:46Speaker 1: this commandment abide firm among all your children. Seth, my son,
- 2:51Speaker 1: the moment I am dead, take you my body and
- 2:53Speaker 1: wrap it up with merh aloes and cassia, and leave
- 2:57Speaker 1: me here in this cave of treasures in which all
- 2:59Speaker 1: the tokens which God gave us from the garden. My son,
- 3:02Speaker 1: after a while a flood will come and overwhelm all
- 3:06Speaker 1: creatures and leave only eight souls out of it. But
- 3:10Speaker 1: my son, let those whom it will leave from among
- 3:13Speaker 1: your children at that time take my body with them
- 3:15Speaker 1: out of this cave. And when they have taken it
- 3:18Speaker 1: with them, let the oldest among them command his children
- 3:21Speaker 1: to lay my body in a ship until the flood
- 3:23Speaker 1: recedes and they come out of the ship. Then they
- 3:26Speaker 1: shall take my body and lay it in the middle
- 3:29Speaker 1: of the earth shortly after they have been saved from
- 3:31Speaker 1: the waters of the flood. The place where my body
- 3:33Speaker 1: shall be laid is the middle of the earth, and
- 3:35Speaker 1: God shall come from that place and shall save all
- 3:38Speaker 1: our kindred. But now, Seth, my son, place yourself at
- 3:42Speaker 1: the head of your people. Tend to them and watch
- 3:45Speaker 1: over them in the fear of God. Lead them in
- 3:47Speaker 1: the good way, Command them the fast to God, and
- 3:50Speaker 1: make them understand they should not to listen to Satan,
- 3:53Speaker 1: or he will destroy them. I tell you again, separate
- 3:56Speaker 1: your children and your children's children from Cain's children. Do
- 4:00Speaker 1: not let them ever mix with them, nor come near them,
- 4:03Speaker 1: either to talk or to work. Then Adam let his
- 4:06Speaker 1: blessing descend upon Seth and upon his children, and upon
- 4:10Speaker 1: all his children's children. He then turned to his son
- 4:13Speaker 1: Seth and to Eve his wife, and said to them,
- 4:16Speaker 1: preserve this gold, this incense, and this murh that God
- 4:20Speaker 1: has given us for a sign, because in days that
- 4:22Speaker 1: are coming, a flood will overwhelm the whole creation. But
- 4:26Speaker 1: those who shall go into the ark, shall take with
- 4:29Speaker 1: them the gold, the incense, and the murh together with
- 4:32Speaker 1: my body, and will lay the gold, the incense, and
- 4:36Speaker 1: the murh with my body in the middle of the earth.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Then after a long time the city in which the gold,
- 4:43Speaker 1: the incense, and the murh found with my body shall
- 4:46Speaker 1: be plundered. But when it is spoiled, the gold, the incense,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and the murrh shall be taken care of with the
- 4:52Speaker 1: spoil that is kept, and none of them shall perish
- 4:55Speaker 1: until the made man from the word of God shall
- 4:57Speaker 1: come and King shall take them and shall offer to him,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and shall offer to him gold and token of his
- 5:03Speaker 1: being King, Incense and token of his being God of
- 5:06Speaker 1: heaven and Earth, and myrrh in token of his passion,
- 5:10Speaker 1: gold also as a token of his overcoming Satan and
- 5:13Speaker 1: all our foes. Incense as a token that he will
- 5:16Speaker 1: rise from the dead and be exalted above things in
- 5:19Speaker 1: heaven and things in the earth. And murrh in token
- 5:22Speaker 1: that he will drink bitter gall and fuel the pains
- 5:24Speaker 1: of hell from Satan. And now seth, my son, I
- 5:28Speaker 1: have revealed to you hidden mysteries which God had revealed
- 5:32Speaker 1: to me. Keep my commandment for yourself and for your people,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Chapter nine. When Adam had ended his commandment to seth,
- 5:45Speaker 1: his limbs went limp, his hands and feet lost all strength.
- 5:49Speaker 1: His hands and feet lost all strength, his voice became silent,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and his tongue ceased to speak. He closed his eyes
- 5:56Speaker 1: and gave up the ghost. But when his children saw
- 5:59Speaker 1: that he was dead, they threw themselves over him, men
- 6:02Speaker 1: and women, old and young, weeping. The death of Adam
- 6:06Speaker 1: took place at the end of nine hundred and thirty
- 6:08Speaker 1: years that he lived upon the earth, on the fifteenth
- 6:11Speaker 1: day of Bermuda, after the reckoning of an epact of
- 6:14Speaker 1: the sun at the ninth hour. Author's note. Barmuda is
- 6:19Speaker 1: the third month of the Egyptian calendar. The epact is
- 6:21Speaker 1: the number of days into the moon cycle that the
- 6:23Speaker 1: solar calendar begins. Thus it is the difference in days
- 6:27Speaker 1: between the solar and lunar calendar. Adam had to die
- 6:30Speaker 1: before his one thousandth birthday so that he would fulfill
- 6:33Speaker 1: the death curse from God to God. One thousand years
- 6:37Speaker 1: is as one day. It was on a Friday, the
- 6:41Speaker 1: very day on which he was created and on which
- 6:43Speaker 1: he rested, and the hour at which he died was
- 6:46Speaker 1: the same as that at which he came out of
- 6:48Speaker 1: the garden. Then Seth wrapped him up well and embalmed
- 6:51Speaker 1: him with plenty of sweet spices from sacred trees from
- 6:54Speaker 1: the Holy Mountain. And he laid his body on the
- 6:57Speaker 1: eastern side of the inside of the cave the incense
- 7:01Speaker 1: and placed a lamp stand in front of him that
- 7:02Speaker 1: kept burning. Then his children stood before him, weeping and
- 7:06Speaker 1: wailing over him the entire night until break of day.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Then Seth and his son Enos, Enoch and Canaan, the
- 7:14Speaker 1: son of Enos, went out and took god offerings to
- 7:17Speaker 1: present to the Lord. And they came to the altar
- 7:19Speaker 1: upon which Adam offered gifts to God. But Eve said
- 7:22Speaker 1: to them, wait until we have first asked God to
- 7:25Speaker 1: accept our offering, and to keep the soul of Adam
- 7:28Speaker 1: his servant by him, and to take it up to rest.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And they all stood up and prayed Chapter ten. And
- 7:39Speaker 1: when they had ended their prayer, the Word of God
- 7:41Speaker 1: came and comforted them concerning their father Adam. After this
- 7:45Speaker 1: they offered their gifts for themselves and for their father.
- 7:49Speaker 1: And when they had ended their offering, the Word of
- 7:51Speaker 1: God came to Seth, the eldest among them, saying to him,
- 7:55Speaker 1: Seth Seth Seth three times, as I was with your father,
- 8:01Speaker 1: so also shall I be with you until the fulfillment
- 8:04Speaker 1: of the promise I made your father, saying, I will
- 8:07Speaker 1: send my word and save you and your seed. But
- 8:10Speaker 1: as to your father, Adam, keep you the commandment he
- 8:13Speaker 1: gave you, and protect your seed offspring, and keep them
- 8:18Speaker 1: from that of Cain, your brother. And God withdrew his
- 8:21Speaker 1: word from Seth. Then Seth, Eve and their children came
- 8:26Speaker 1: down from the mountain to the Cave of Treasures. But
- 8:28Speaker 1: Adam was the first whose soul died in the land
- 8:30Speaker 1: of Eden and the Cave of Treasures, for no one
- 8:33Speaker 1: died before him but his son Abel, who died because
- 8:36Speaker 1: he was murdered. Then all the children of Adam rose
- 8:39Speaker 1: up and wept over their father Adam and made offerings
- 8:43Speaker 1: to him. One hundred and forty days Chapter eleven, after
- 8:51Speaker 1: the death of Adam and of Eve, Seth separated his
- 8:54Speaker 1: children and his children's children from Cain's children. Cain and
- 8:58Speaker 1: his seed went down and lived to the west below
- 9:01Speaker 1: the place where he had killed his brother Abel. But
- 9:03Speaker 1: Seth and his children lived to the north on the
- 9:06Speaker 1: mountain of the Cave of Treasures, in order to be
- 9:08Speaker 1: near to their father Adam. And Seth, the oldest of
- 9:11Speaker 1: his people, tall and good, with a worthy soul and
- 9:14Speaker 1: of a strong mind, stood at the head of his
- 9:17Speaker 1: people and tended to them in innocence, patience, and meekness,
- 9:21Speaker 1: and did not allow even one of them to go
- 9:23Speaker 1: down to Cane's children. And because of their purity, they
- 9:26Speaker 1: were named children of God, and they were with God
- 9:29Speaker 1: instead of the host of angels who fell, for they
- 9:31Speaker 1: continued in praises to God and in singing songs to
- 9:35Speaker 1: Him in their cave, the Cave of Treasures. Then Seth
- 9:38Speaker 1: stood before the bodies of his father Adam and of
- 9:40Speaker 1: his mother Eve, and he prayed night and day, and
- 9:43Speaker 1: asked for mercy for himself and his children, and that
- 9:46Speaker 1: when he had some difficulty dealing with a child, God
- 9:49Speaker 1: would give him counsel. But Seth and his children did
- 9:51Speaker 1: not like mundane work, but set themselves to do heavenly things,
- 9:55Speaker 1: because they had no other thought other than praises, worship,
- 9:59Speaker 1: and psalms to God. God. Therefore did they at all
- 10:01Speaker 1: times hear the voices of angels, praising and glorifying God
- 10:05Speaker 1: from within the garden, or when they were sent by
- 10:07Speaker 1: God on an errand, or when they were going up
- 10:10Speaker 1: to heaven because of their own purity. Seth and his
- 10:13Speaker 1: children heard and saw the angels. The garden was not
- 10:16Speaker 1: far above them, only about fifteen spiritual heavenly cubits. One
- 10:21Speaker 1: spiritual cubit is equal to three cubits of men all
- 10:24Speaker 1: together forty five cubits. Seth and his children lived on
- 10:27Speaker 1: the mountain below the garden. They did not sow nor reap.
- 10:32Speaker 1: They made no food for the body, not even wheat,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but only enough for offerings. They ate the flavorful fruit
- 10:38Speaker 1: of trees that grew on the mountain where they lived.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Seth often fasted for forty days, as did also his
- 10:45Speaker 1: oldest children. The family of Seth smelled the smell of
- 10:48Speaker 1: the trees in the garden when the wind blew that way.
- 10:51Speaker 1: They were happy, innocent, without sudden fear. There was no jealousy,
- 10:56Speaker 1: no evil action, nor hatred among them. There was no
- 11:00Speaker 1: animal passion. No one among them spoke either foul words
- 11:04Speaker 1: or curse. There was neither evil intention nor fraud. The
- 11:08Speaker 1: men of that time never swore, But when under hard
- 11:11Speaker 1: circumstances when men must swear, they swore by the blood
- 11:15Speaker 1: of Abel to just. But every day they compelled their
- 11:18Speaker 1: children and their women to fast and pray and to
- 11:20Speaker 1: worship the most High God in the cave. They blessed
- 11:23Speaker 1: themselves by being near the body of their father Adam,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and anointed themselves with it. And they did so until
- 11:29Speaker 1: the end of Seth drew near. Author's note, it is
- 11:34Speaker 1: unclear what the men anointed themselves with. It could be
- 11:37Speaker 1: oil blessed by being left close to the body of Adam.
- 11:40Speaker 1: To think that they anointed themselves with the oils from
- 11:42Speaker 1: the dead body would violate religious laws that would be
- 11:45Speaker 1: established later than the story, yet far earlier than the
- 11:48Speaker 1: writing of this third century text. Chapter twelve. Then Seth
- 11:57Speaker 1: the Just called his son Enos and Canaan, the son
- 12:01Speaker 1: of Enos, and Mahalalel, the son of Canaan, and said
- 12:05Speaker 1: he to them, my end is near, and I wish
- 12:07Speaker 1: to build a roof over the altar on which gifts
- 12:09Speaker 1: are offered. They listened to his commandment, and all of them,
- 12:13Speaker 1: both old and young, went out and worked hard and
- 12:15Speaker 1: built a beautiful roof over the altar. And Seth's thought
- 12:18Speaker 1: was that by doing this a blessing should come upon
- 12:21Speaker 1: his children on the mountain, and he thought he should
- 12:23Speaker 1: present an offering for them before his death. Then, when
- 12:27Speaker 1: the building of the roof was completed, he commanded them
- 12:29Speaker 1: to make offerings. They worked diligently and brought them to Seth,
- 12:34Speaker 1: their father, who took them and offered them upon the
- 12:37Speaker 1: altar and prayed God to accept their offerings, to have
- 12:41Speaker 1: mercy on the souls of his children, and to keep
- 12:43Speaker 1: them from the hand of Satan. God accepted his offering
- 12:46Speaker 1: and sent his blessing on him and on his children.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Then God made a promise to Seth, saying, at the
- 12:53Speaker 1: end of the great five days and a half, which
- 12:55Speaker 1: is the promise I have made to you and to
- 12:56Speaker 1: your father, I will send my word and save you
- 13:00Speaker 1: and your seed. Author's note, A great day is one
- 13:04Speaker 1: thousand years. Then Seth and his children and grandchildren met
- 13:08Speaker 1: together and came down from the altar and went to
- 13:11Speaker 1: the Cave of Treasures, where they prayed. And He blessed
- 13:14Speaker 1: them in the body of our father Adam and anointed
- 13:16Speaker 1: them with it. But Seth stayed in the Cave of Treasures.
- 13:20Speaker 1: But Seth stayed in the Cave of Treasures a few
- 13:22Speaker 1: days and then suffered sufferings to death. Then Enos, his
- 13:27Speaker 1: first born son, came to him with Canaan his son,
- 13:30Speaker 1: and Mahali'el Canaan's son, and Jared, the son of Mahalalel,
- 13:35Speaker 1: and Enoch, Jared's son, and with their wives and children
- 13:39Speaker 1: to receive a blessing from Seth. Then Seth prayed over
- 13:42Speaker 1: them and blessed them, and earnestly requested them by the
- 13:45Speaker 1: blood of Abel the just saying, I beg of you,
- 13:49Speaker 1: my children, not to let one of you go down
- 13:51Speaker 1: from this holy impure mountain. Do not associate with the
- 13:54Speaker 1: children of Cain, the murderer and the center who killed
- 13:57Speaker 1: his brother. You know, my children, that we flee from
- 14:00Speaker 1: him and from all his sin with all our might,
- 14:03Speaker 1: because he killed his brother Abel. After having said this,
- 14:06Speaker 1: Seth blessed Enos his firstborn son, and commanded him to
- 14:10Speaker 1: minister continually im purity before the body of their father
- 14:13Speaker 1: Adam all the days of his life. He also made
- 14:17Speaker 1: him promise to go at times to the altar which
- 14:19Speaker 1: he had built, and he commanded him to feed his
- 14:21Speaker 1: people in righteousness, in judgment, and in purity all the
- 14:26Speaker 1: days of his life. Then Seth's limbs went limp, his
- 14:29Speaker 1: hands and feet lost all strength. His voice became silent
- 14:33Speaker 1: and unable to speak, and he gave up the ghost
- 14:35Speaker 1: and died. Seth died the day after his nine hundred
- 14:38Speaker 1: and twelfth year, on the twenty seventh day of the
- 14:41Speaker 1: month Abeb Enoch, being then twenty years old. Author's note.
- 14:46Speaker 1: There are three separate numbers of significance. Here, twenty seven
- 14:50Speaker 1: is a gateway number. Nine two plus seven equals nine.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Nine is the number of endings. Nine hundred and twelve
- 14:57Speaker 1: reduces to the number three, which is number of completeness.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Abeb is the seventh month of the year in the
- 15:02Speaker 1: Hebrew calendar, corresponding to Nissan. Then they carefully wrapped up
- 15:07Speaker 1: the body of Seth and embalmed him with sweet spices,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and laid him in a cave of treasures on the
- 15:13Speaker 1: right side of our father Adam's body, and they mourned
- 15:15Speaker 1: for him forty days. They offered gifts for him, as
- 15:19Speaker 1: they had done for our father Adam. After the death
- 15:22Speaker 1: of Seth, Enos was raised to the head of his people,
- 15:25Speaker 1: whom he fed in righteousness and judgment, as his father
- 15:28Speaker 1: had commanded him, but by the time Enos was eight
- 15:31Speaker 1: hundred and twenty years old, Cain had a very large
- 15:34Speaker 1: number of offspring because they had sex married, often being
- 15:39Speaker 1: given to animal luss until the land below the mountain
- 15:42Speaker 1: was filled with them.
