- 0:16Speaker 1: welcome to another episode of the Tailgate. We have an
- 0:19Speaker 1: amazing one this week. Roy Wood Junior. You know him
- 0:22Speaker 1: from The Daily Show. He's got a bunch of specials
- 0:25Speaker 1: on Comedy Central. He's one of my favorite comics. He
- 0:27Speaker 1: is fantastic. He's a Dolphins fan originally, so we talked
- 0:32Speaker 1: to him a little bit more generally about the NFL
- 0:35Speaker 1: and a bunch of stuff. And then we had another
- 0:37Speaker 1: buddy of mine, a great comic from Cincinnati, Alex Schubert,
- 0:41Speaker 1: on at the end of the show to talk about
- 0:43Speaker 1: the Bengals specifically, So you get a little bit of
- 0:45Speaker 1: everything in this episode, Roywood Junior, and then a game preview.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And by the way, if you are a fan of
- 0:51Speaker 1: Roy like i am, he's gonna be in Minneapolis Friday,
- 0:54Speaker 1: February ninth at the Fillmore. They just added a show
- 0:57Speaker 1: because tickets are going fast. He's absently one of my
- 1:00Speaker 1: favorites to watch. You gotta go check it out, enjoy
- 1:03Speaker 1: the show. Everybody, y'all know what.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Tom did.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Here. We gotta go and then we gotta go.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Let's go till Tom.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, We are joined by the great Roy Wood Junior,
- 1:21Speaker 1: lifelong Dolphins fan. Hello, Roy, Hello. I hate to start
- 1:29Speaker 1: with this. Uh, Monday was insane. The Dolphins are the
- 1:34Speaker 1: most interesting team in the league to me.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Don't say it like that. You're trying to be kind
- 1:38Speaker 2: because I'm wearing a Dolphins jersey. There's a lot of
- 1:41Speaker 2: this whole That whole weekend was a lot of you're
- 1:44Speaker 2: ten and three, but it seems like you could be
- 1:47Speaker 2: seven and six if you start looking at it. Yes,
- 1:50Speaker 2: but like what they did with the Eagles, they started
- 1:51Speaker 2: looking I don't know if you saw the stat that
- 1:53Speaker 2: came out the point differentials with the Eagles, Like, yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 2: they won a bunch of games, but they've all been
- 1:58Speaker 2: close and when they lose, they lose y Whereas the Dolphins.
- 2:04Speaker 2: It was the argument had been up until this point
- 2:06Speaker 2: that oh, you only beat soft teams, you don't step
- 2:09Speaker 2: up to play, when like the Eagles came in and
- 2:11Speaker 2: pimp slapped you like you've been you've been, you've been
- 2:14Speaker 2: slapped around a couple of times, and then a Titans
- 2:17Speaker 2: team who you should have beaten, you lost to. So
- 2:19Speaker 2: now who's the real tending for? You know, like, are
- 2:24Speaker 2: you're you're a division leader? But are you're a playoff team?
- 2:27Speaker 2: So I think there's definitely some questions, but I think
- 2:30Speaker 2: the questions for the Dolphins are more so on defense than.
- 2:35Speaker 1: There that That's that thing that shouting people on sports
- 2:38Speaker 1: shows do this time of year, the pretender contender conversation,
- 2:42Speaker 1: And I think the Dolphins have been made like the
- 2:44Speaker 1: poster child of that conversation. But I think you're right.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Is the icy or spicy? The icy spice? Which one
- 2:53Speaker 2: you think? Jimmy Jerry is?
- 2:55Speaker 1: Yeah? Are you are you getting? Is this team a fraud?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Or are you giving them the nod? It's insanity. Hey,
- 3:06Speaker 1: can we get a former a two ninety pound former
- 3:11Speaker 1: head coach who hasn't who hasn't taken a breath near
- 3:15Speaker 1: a football stadium in eighteen or nineteen years and have
- 3:20Speaker 1: him scream about why your favorite team is untrustworthy? But
- 3:26Speaker 1: it's it's all the teams though. Every you guys got
- 3:29Speaker 1: made into the poster child. But like the Chiefs, the
- 3:32Speaker 1: Brown all these The league is weird, man, right now.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I'd say, I mean, even the Niners took a took
- 3:38Speaker 2: a heavy loss. I hate to admit that the Cowboys
- 3:43Speaker 2: might be the realest of the double digit win teams
- 3:49Speaker 2: right now in terms of the least amount of questions
- 3:51Speaker 2: considering who, you know who I need to pull up
- 3:53Speaker 2: who they lost to it. But like when they win,
- 3:55Speaker 2: they win, and they beat teams that were supposedly supposed
- 3:58Speaker 2: to be good. The Dolphins, I think also part of it, though,
- 4:02Speaker 2: if I'm being honest, I think a lot of it
- 4:04Speaker 2: is also you're just happy for Tuam. You're happy to
- 4:08Speaker 2: see a guy who deserves a chance to play well
- 4:11Speaker 2: and have weapons out there on the field as well,
- 4:14Speaker 2: So you know it's, yeah, the Dolphins are good. And
- 4:18Speaker 2: then you know you can make the argument, oh they
- 4:20Speaker 2: beat the Broncos was seventy The Broncos have kind of
- 4:23Speaker 2: turned it around since that time.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Yes, literally, that was the it almost that looked. Remember
- 4:29Speaker 1: after that game, they're like, we should sell the Broncos,
- 4:33Speaker 1: sell all them, sell everything in the building. But that
- 4:37Speaker 1: almost they almost went the complete opposite direction than what
- 4:40Speaker 1: everybody thought they would do after that moment.
- 4:43Speaker 2: And that same shout and show Johnny Jammy at this
- 4:46Speaker 2: point the Broncos is they smoking or is they joking?
- 4:49Speaker 2: Oh man, after they lost the Dolphins, they joking. Fast
- 4:53Speaker 2: forward to this week. I've always told you the Broncos
- 4:56Speaker 2: been smoking. They always like a hypocritic. You don't remember
- 4:59Speaker 2: the shit you said in October when he got blown out?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah, we should do, we should do. God, I would
- 5:07Speaker 1: love Are they smoking or are they joking? Where are
- 5:11Speaker 1: they now? Could I just get Could somebody just cut
- 5:15Speaker 1: together every fraud or nod take from early in the
- 5:20Speaker 1: season and just superimpose it into a singular bit.
- 5:23Speaker 2: That would be great. That's great, dude, I would love.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I've always said that if a sportscaster predicts the game wrong,
- 5:30Speaker 2: he should not be allowed on air the following week. Yeah.
- 5:33Speaker 1: It does feel sometimes like we live in a repercussion
- 5:37Speaker 1: list society when it comes and that's that's the great Uh,
- 5:42Speaker 1: that is the great thing. We live in America. We
- 5:45Speaker 1: get to have our opinions. But every once in a
- 5:47Speaker 1: while you turn on a sports show and you're like,
- 5:50Speaker 1: I don't know, there has to be if we can
- 5:53Speaker 1: suspend a guy for making a horse collar tackle. I
- 5:57Speaker 1: think we could suspend a guy for what he said
- 5:59Speaker 1: on for this morning.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, but they'll never do it because that's the controversy.
- 6:04Speaker 2: It's all click seeing you know, it is what it is. Man.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I in the AFC. I don't think Kansas City is
- 6:12Speaker 2: going to do it this year. The receivers have let
- 6:15Speaker 2: mahomes down repeatedly, repeatedly, and then you want to show
- 6:20Speaker 2: confidence in them and not make any moves. But it's like, shit, man,
- 6:26Speaker 2: you got do you think now? Do you think the
- 6:29Speaker 2: trade deadline is still too early in football? Mm? Hm?
- 6:33Speaker 1: I do.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I think it's week six. Did they extend it because
- 6:36Speaker 2: we play seventeen now? I don't know if they pushed
- 6:39Speaker 2: the trade deadline a week, but I still think the
- 6:41Speaker 2: trade deadline should be like week ten.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Week ten, That's exactly right. There's a reason it comes
- 6:47Speaker 1: after the All Star break. And yet, like if you're
- 6:49Speaker 1: trying to which I like, I think there are traditionalists
- 6:53Speaker 1: who are like, I don't want to get it rid
- 6:56Speaker 1: of it, like they don't want to see the NFL
- 6:58Speaker 1: go the way of the NBA. But I'm a huge
- 7:01Speaker 1: NBA guy, and I think a lot of the things
- 7:04Speaker 1: that the NBA does, I would love to see them
- 7:07Speaker 1: come the way of the NFL. And like, I'm a
- 7:11Speaker 1: diehard Timbrelves fan, lifelong Timbrels fan, one of the most
- 7:15Speaker 1: you know, disastrous organizations in professional sports. And now like,
- 7:20Speaker 1: right now we have it and is a superstar. Kat
- 7:24Speaker 1: is a beast, this gobear thing. Despite me walking around
- 7:28Speaker 1: town shouting at strangers about how bad of an idea
- 7:31Speaker 1: it was, it's working. It's working. And so and now
- 7:35Speaker 1: I go, as an NBA fan, I go, okay, I've
- 7:38Speaker 1: got this chance, and I know what the trade deadline means,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and I think that would be really interesting, you know,
- 7:45Speaker 1: like you take the Dolphins for example, like you guys
- 7:48Speaker 1: did week ten, Week ten, you know where you're at.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's a lot harder to know where you're at in
- 7:53Speaker 1: week six, week seven, stuff like that.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Correct, you still make an adjustments off of the first
- 7:58Speaker 2: couple of games, And so the receivers didn't like it
- 8:01Speaker 2: wasn't like drop city until around week six, seven, eight,
- 8:06Speaker 2: where it started costing them games. Like you see a
- 8:08Speaker 2: drop or two early, but you're winning, so it's like,
- 8:11Speaker 2: hey man, no big deal. And then it gets a
- 8:13Speaker 2: little deep into the season and going, all right, we
- 8:15Speaker 2: looked at the tape. You lined up off side four
- 8:17Speaker 2: or five other times, not just on the game winning
- 8:21Speaker 2: latter role that got called back.
- 8:23Speaker 1: That's it's that is the one that has been the
- 8:27Speaker 1: most interesting to watch. You know, the hip, the off
- 8:30Speaker 1: sides with the Chiefs, the hipocrisy around what happened in
- 8:33Speaker 1: the in the super Bowl. But I think the more
- 8:38Speaker 1: interesting story there is. And I'm curious what you think,
- 8:41Speaker 1: because you love Tua and two is about to two
- 8:44Speaker 1: is about to get He's gonna get paid in some regard,
- 8:48Speaker 1: I think, even as great as Mahomes is, when these
- 8:52Speaker 1: guys get paid, and as they should rooting for guys
- 8:56Speaker 1: to get paid, but when they do, it changes the
- 8:58Speaker 1: NFL is a math aquay. Now we talk about that
- 9:01Speaker 1: on the show a lot. It just becomes really interesting.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Even the great Patrick Mahomes, like you are sitting there going, oh, man,
- 9:09Speaker 1: is it is it ridiculous that we think you need
- 9:12Speaker 1: a Juju smisch like the things that you'd be grabbing for.
- 9:16Speaker 1: You don't even need a coke. You'd take an RC
- 9:19Speaker 1: cola right now.
- 9:20Speaker 2: For what I really hope, man, is that as the
- 9:25Speaker 2: league continues to grow, you have to do something to
- 9:30Speaker 2: make the competition better because it's hard to see teams
- 9:35Speaker 2: that are bad turning around. That's what makes the Broncos
- 9:38Speaker 2: so interesting is that, for the most party, you correct
- 9:42Speaker 2: me if from wrong, most NFL teams are what they
- 9:47Speaker 2: are by around week ten to twelve. So if you're
- 9:54Speaker 2: a flirting with five hundred ass team, that's what you're
- 9:57Speaker 2: gonna be. You're not gonna go on a six game skid.
- 9:59Speaker 2: But to rare for anybody to go on a six
- 10:01Speaker 2: to eight game winning streak either and bash their way
- 10:05Speaker 2: into the playoffs. You could be that mid level. You
- 10:09Speaker 2: could be like an eight and eight, nine and seven
- 10:12Speaker 2: ass team like the Steelers were in that wildcard year
- 10:15Speaker 2: where they won with Jerome Bettis, get into the playoffs
- 10:19Speaker 2: as a sixth seed and then run that bitch all
- 10:21Speaker 2: the way to the super Bowl and it's like, okay,
- 10:23Speaker 2: you make the adjustments. But they were never an overly
- 10:25Speaker 2: dominant team that where the Colts were favored in the
- 10:28Speaker 2: game that they beat them in in that first round.
- 10:31Speaker 2: So which also Jerome Bettis, Nobody talks about how Ben
- 10:36Speaker 2: Roethlisberger saved Jerome Bettis's legacy. Yeah, like that was his
- 10:41Speaker 2: last year and he fumbled like.
- 10:42Speaker 1: That is there's a deep dive. You're absolutely right, Jerome
- 10:47Speaker 1: Bettis Is. There would be a whole different narrative around
- 10:50Speaker 1: that dude in his career had that not happen.
- 10:52Speaker 2: It would be it wouldn't be Scott Norwood level. You're
- 10:56Speaker 2: a pariah, But it would be impossible to talk about
- 10:59Speaker 2: him with talking about the playoff fumble to cost the stealer.
- 11:04Speaker 2: But I just really think that doing whatever you can
- 11:08Speaker 2: to increase the competition a little bit, I think is
- 11:10Speaker 2: a good thing I do, And I'm probably in the
- 11:13Speaker 2: minority on this because they're only at any given time
- 11:18Speaker 2: in the league, there's only ten reliable quarterbacks out of
- 11:22Speaker 2: thirty teams. Yeah, I feel like teams are now forced
- 11:27Speaker 2: to pay players too much too soon, you know, and
- 11:33Speaker 2: then you're stuck with a bunch of cap space that
- 11:37Speaker 2: you've got to deal with for years and year.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Yes, the amount of guys who've won titles on either
- 11:45Speaker 1: rookie deals or second year deals that weren't as big
- 11:49Speaker 1: as these monster deals they get later in their careers, right,
- 11:52Speaker 1: it's Russ Aaron Rodgers won early, Roethlisberger won early and
- 11:55Speaker 1: won on a second contract. It's and on and on,
- 11:58Speaker 1: everybody except Bray, who took hilarious pay cuts for his
- 12:03Speaker 1: entire career to build those giant rosters.
- 12:06Speaker 2: You know, Flacco was that the end of his second deal. Yeah,
- 12:10Speaker 2: going into the third payday.
- 12:11Speaker 1: That's the thing. Now, if you're viewed as, oh, we
- 12:14Speaker 1: might have a guy here, we might have a guy,
- 12:17Speaker 1: give him all them. He's got to get the money
- 12:19Speaker 1: that the other guys get.
- 12:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:21Speaker 1: That's the Daniel Jones thing. You have no choice.
- 12:23Speaker 2: You have no choice. You have to pay Joe Flacco,
- 12:26Speaker 2: even if you deep down feel like, all right, he
- 12:28Speaker 2: was good enough to get us to the super Bowl
- 12:30Speaker 2: based on the system, but he wasn't a guy that
- 12:32Speaker 2: was going to just throw for four point fifty every
- 12:35Speaker 2: single week, which is what you would expect a guy
- 12:37Speaker 2: to get paid what Flacco got paid. Or Joe Burrow
- 12:40Speaker 2: in its instance, now, who's gotten a super duper ria.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I live here. It's about to get weird here.
- 12:46Speaker 2: You have no choice because what do you do if
- 12:49Speaker 2: you don't pay Josh Allen or Burrow? What's the alternative?
- 12:53Speaker 1: I think it's like I'm a broken record on this.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It's just football's a math equation to me, and I
- 13:00Speaker 1: don't even like with the money some wide receivers are getting.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Now you go, okay, well, then what comes off the
- 13:05Speaker 1: board somewhere else and you have to I think, I
- 13:08Speaker 1: don't think it's ever gonna happen, but I'm curious if
- 13:11Speaker 1: you ever. Because analytics are changing and the way teams
- 13:14Speaker 1: are built, Like who's the GM coach combo that's gonna
- 13:18Speaker 1: come in and go, all right, here's the deal. We're
- 13:20Speaker 1: gonna draft a quarterback every single year in the middle rounds, third, fourth, fifth, six.
- 13:25Speaker 1: We're gonna target somebody every year. We're always gonna have
- 13:29Speaker 1: a journeyman, Josh Dobbs, Nick Mullins, you know, Joe Flacco
- 13:34Speaker 1: late in his career, Gardner Minshew, the gas station goat,
- 13:39Speaker 1: like any of those guys. We're gonna have one of
- 13:42Speaker 1: those dudes on the roster, and whoever wins that job,
- 13:45Speaker 1: we're gonna give it to him. We're gonna keep that
- 13:47Speaker 1: quarterback room money really low. We're gonna build this monster
- 13:51Speaker 1: team like the Eagles with Jalen Hurts before he got
- 13:53Speaker 1: that money versus after with that defense. So who's who's
- 13:57Speaker 1: gonna be the one that goes? We will give a
- 13:59Speaker 1: young guy a job, and unless he's Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady,
- 14:03Speaker 1: Joe Montana, Aaron Rodgers, unless we go this is a
- 14:07Speaker 1: Hall of Famer that elevates everybody, we're gonna cut him loose.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And if he goes somewhere else and plays great, we're
- 14:12Speaker 1: gonna eat it. We're just always gonna have a great
- 14:15Speaker 1: roster that cycles through. I mean, brock Perty's gonna get
- 14:19Speaker 1: him there. And I don't know if that's because he's
- 14:22Speaker 1: great or if he's great and cheap.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Two hundred and sixty second pick overall Rock Party and
- 14:30Speaker 2: he's gonna get paid and he should get paid. Who
- 14:34Speaker 2: and he replaced Garoppolo, who was the second round pick
- 14:38Speaker 2: in New England who they figured would be the guy
- 14:40Speaker 2: to take over after Brady retire, and that you know
- 14:43Speaker 2: that never came to But who was the other one?
- 14:46Speaker 2: Was it Matt Castle that came out of New England.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Too, Matt Castle. Matt Castle came out and did some stuff. Yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 1: he wound up here in Minnesota for a little.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Bit, I think. And and Castle was two hundred and
- 14:57Speaker 2: thirtieth overall by the Patriots. So what you're saying is
- 14:59Speaker 2: that you take the Patriots approach. You have a journeyman
- 15:02Speaker 2: like a Cousin's or a Fleco who just comes in
- 15:06Speaker 2: and he'll get your eight wins and you'll hopefully get
- 15:09Speaker 2: two more from your two more wins from your defense,
- 15:13Speaker 2: and you just keep drafting one dollar scratch offs mm
- 15:17Speaker 2: hmm in the fourth through seventh rounds knowing that one
- 15:22Speaker 2: of those got damn one dollar quarterback scratch offs is
- 15:25Speaker 2: gonna pay fifty thousand dollars. Sooner or later, you're gonna
- 15:29Speaker 2: get a You're gonna get a brock Perty, You're gonna
- 15:32Speaker 2: get a six round Brady. That's what you're saying the
- 15:34Speaker 2: strategy should be for viting.
- 15:36Speaker 1: And I'll double down on it because I because Brady
- 15:39Speaker 1: took those pay cuts. Every year, there's some outrageous stat
- 15:42Speaker 1: where like, no, only in the last twenty three years,
- 15:46Speaker 1: only twice has a quarterback making more than twelve point
- 15:50Speaker 1: five percent of their salary cap won the Super Bowl.
- 15:52Speaker 1: It's Brady one year and it's Mahomes last year. So
- 15:56Speaker 1: I think there's this huge skewed data set because Brady
- 16:01Speaker 1: was smart to do what he did. And now you
- 16:03Speaker 1: live in this world where I like, I think that
- 16:05Speaker 1: parody you're talking about We're like, oh, the Chiefs they're
- 16:07Speaker 1: missing a wide receiver, right, the Ravens. The Ravens can't
- 16:11Speaker 1: quite put it all together. The Browns they go and
- 16:14Speaker 1: spend all this money in a quarterback. And it's not
- 16:16Speaker 1: like there's just this parody that exists that I think, Well,
- 16:19Speaker 1: you're waiting for the lottery winner, like you're hoping to
- 16:23Speaker 1: scratch a big one off. I think if you build
- 16:26Speaker 1: your roster right, you might also sneak your way into something.
- 16:31Speaker 1: You might go, oh shit, did Gardner Minshew did? Josh
- 16:35Speaker 1: Dobbs did? And I know people are gonna be like,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm talking about two guys who haven't had great runs here,
- 16:41Speaker 1: But I think great roster right now is winning in
- 16:45Speaker 1: the NFL. I And if you get Joe Burrow, hell yeah,
- 16:49Speaker 1: give Joe Burrow every cent you have. But what are
- 16:52Speaker 1: your standards for paying a dude?
- 16:54Speaker 2: I don't.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean, you look at dude. You live in New York.
- 16:57Speaker 1: You watch Daniel Jones get get a boe bunch of money.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Good for him, But then.
- 17:02Speaker 4: You watch this.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Italian insanity here like Tommy DeVito. I mean, it's the
- 17:11Speaker 1: most fun in the world. And you also go, oh,
- 17:14Speaker 1: my gosh, what if Tommy DeVito can do anything and
- 17:17Speaker 1: he's not like blowing you know, the stat book up,
- 17:20Speaker 1: but like, what if he can do that and you
- 17:22Speaker 1: build a team around him. So I'm fascinated by the
- 17:24Speaker 1: math of it.
- 17:25Speaker 2: That's such a New York name.
- 17:27Speaker 3: To the amount of pride that New Yorkers I can
- 17:39Speaker 3: just I just know they're walking the streets with right
- 17:41Speaker 3: now like they did it.
- 17:45Speaker 2: But I think that's good. I think it's good when
- 17:47Speaker 2: a city has a player that matches the mentality of
- 17:51Speaker 2: the like this is a different sport. But Bryce Harper
- 17:55Speaker 2: playing for the Phillies, it's perfect. He's bearded, he's kind
- 18:00Speaker 2: of an asshole. He never smiles. That's Philadelphia, Like, I
- 18:06Speaker 2: like you, but I'm not gonna smile for you. And
- 18:08Speaker 2: if you disrespect me, bro we could go right now
- 18:10Speaker 2: wherever you want to do. Like he's staring at people
- 18:13Speaker 2: as he's rounding the basis. There was a sports writer
- 18:17Speaker 2: who said we love I think it was a Philadelphia
- 18:22Speaker 2: sports writer who said that we love Jalen Hurts, but
- 18:25Speaker 2: man brock Purty would be the king of the city.
- 18:28Speaker 2: And you know, everybody took it as disrespect to Jalen
- 18:32Speaker 2: and oh it's racist, and you're just saying a white
- 18:35Speaker 2: man would get more love than a black man. And
- 18:37Speaker 2: I'm like, it's Philadelphia. Didn't even make me telling the truth. Man.
- 18:45Speaker 2: It's like that old Bill BurrH rant where he said
- 18:48Speaker 2: you'll have a statue of Rocky and he's not even
- 18:50Speaker 2: a real person. But Joe Lewis is actually from here
- 18:53Speaker 2: and you won't get him a.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Yeah, that should be. That would be a fun league
- 19:01Speaker 1: if all of a sudden we just scrambled all the quarterbacks, right,
- 19:04Speaker 1: all right, nobody has a quarterback anymore. We're gonna scramble
- 19:07Speaker 1: them all and we're gonna develop a committee that goes,
- 19:10Speaker 1: we're gonna pick which quarterbacks personality most fits your city,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and we're gonna ship them there. And there's actually some
- 19:18Speaker 1: ones that that match pretty well. I gotta tell you,
- 19:21Speaker 1: I think I think Kirk Cousins. Probably Kirk Cousins is
- 19:27Speaker 1: eating casserole and hot dish with a lot of a
- 19:32Speaker 1: lot of families and fitting and fine justin Herbert and
- 19:35Speaker 1: that hair makes the only place he makes more sense
- 19:37Speaker 1: than in Los Angeles is where they used to be
- 19:40Speaker 1: San Diego. There's a few of them that really really
- 19:44Speaker 1: makes sense Already.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Mark Jackson in Baltimore, He's got a rugged collar look
- 19:49Speaker 2: to him, like to me, a quarterback fitting in. The
- 19:53Speaker 2: question is could you picture that quarterback working a regular
- 19:57Speaker 2: job in that town. Lamar Jackson looks like he worked
- 20:03Speaker 2: a shift at a factory sometimes, like just disheveled and
- 20:08Speaker 2: just you got to get these kids up, man, God
- 20:11Speaker 2: damn it, man just stressed out. Tua looks like one
- 20:16Speaker 2: of those people in Miami where you I don't know
- 20:18Speaker 2: how you make your money? Yes, Like you ever see
- 20:20Speaker 2: people like that out in public just on a random
- 20:22Speaker 2: day and I'm like, it's work hours, Yeah, what do
- 20:24Speaker 2: you do? Miami's Miami's like Vegas, Like why are all
- 20:28Speaker 2: these people not at work?
- 20:31Speaker 1: He's got that. I could my money could come from
- 20:34Speaker 1: some sort of combination of DJ TikTok, Like there is
- 20:40Speaker 1: he's got that. If his hair was just a little higher,
- 20:43Speaker 1: you'd be like, you're in a music industry that I
- 20:45Speaker 1: don't understand currently.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like, yeah, it's a new technology thing. And
- 20:52Speaker 2: the way you monetize is that you get the digi
- 20:55Speaker 2: points and then you take the digit points and you
- 20:56Speaker 2: invest those. It's like beyond crypto, and and then they
- 21:00Speaker 2: just mumble the word block and chain, And then anytime
- 21:03Speaker 2: I hear the word blockchain, I just tune out. I
- 21:05Speaker 2: know it's important, but I just added.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Four hours later, you're just googling digi wallet, still not
- 21:11Speaker 1: understanding anything from the conversation.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah, what theck is this?
- 21:16Speaker 1: I gotta tell you. Dak Prescott a human man named Dakota,
- 21:20Speaker 1: like playing that that one. And I know, I know
- 21:24Speaker 1: it's funny that Dakota is an actual state and it
- 21:27Speaker 1: would make sense, but I don't know dak fits in
- 21:31Speaker 1: Sometimes I think Cowboys. It was fun to have uh
- 21:36Speaker 1: Tony Romo there because he was one of the few
- 21:38Speaker 1: Cowboys quarterbacks who didn't walk up to the podium like
- 21:42Speaker 1: hey y'all. And I know they don't talk like that,
- 21:44Speaker 1: but they all have that swagger like I got guns
- 21:47Speaker 1: on my hips, I'm a cowboy. It's very weird how
- 21:50Speaker 1: that organization engulfs a personality.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence doesn't feel like a Jacksonville guy. He's loved
- 21:58Speaker 2: there and he loves the team's talking and shit. But
- 22:00Speaker 2: just yeah, if I saw just a picture of Trevor Lawrence,
- 22:03Speaker 2: I would not guess Jacksonville. The hair, the hair flows
- 22:08Speaker 2: too nicely.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah, they you'd have to guess. Did you hear Portland
- 22:12Speaker 1: started a football team.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll tell you one. Two that fit in. And
- 22:17Speaker 2: maybe it's because they're so iconic now you can imagine
- 22:20Speaker 2: them anywhere else. But Marino in Miami. Yes, because Marino
- 22:25Speaker 2: was fun and just happy. He matched the vibe of
- 22:27Speaker 2: the city.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Looks like he wears a sport coat with a T shirt.
- 22:31Speaker 1: That's what Marino looks.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but he really does. You see him in sketch
- 22:35Speaker 2: your commercials and shit like he looks he looks like
- 22:37Speaker 2: that dude. Then there's Drew Brees in New Orleans who
- 22:44Speaker 2: you can look at Drew Brees and just go, yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 2: that guy's got black friends. You got to in New
- 22:49Speaker 2: Orleans like the white black dynamic. It's that city. The
- 22:55Speaker 2: racial dynamic is very communal, where you're seeing as a
- 23:01Speaker 2: New Orleanian first and your race second. Yeah, that's what
- 23:05Speaker 2: I've gleaned from New Orleans. So yes, he's a white
- 23:09Speaker 2: boy that I could see him kicking it with black
- 23:12Speaker 2: folks at some second line and him being perfectly accepted
- 23:16Speaker 2: with his family and his kids, and it not be
- 23:18Speaker 2: he he doesn't look like he would feel out of
- 23:21Speaker 2: place around other races.
- 23:24Speaker 1: That's a really great take on New Orleans. And I
- 23:27Speaker 1: wonder because I've only been there, performed there, spent time
- 23:31Speaker 1: there post Katrina, So I wonder how much that cohesion
- 23:37Speaker 1: and that like community and that we're New Orleans first.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I wonder how much of that. I mean, that's certainly
- 23:44Speaker 1: not a football podcast.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Like Detroit's another one of those Yes, you're from Detroit first,
- 23:49Speaker 2: and then you can be white or whatever you want
- 23:51Speaker 2: to be black after that. Yeah, but Detroit first and always.
- 23:56Speaker 2: I met Marino once.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I need to hear it, because here Marina was almost
- 24:01Speaker 1: a Viking.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Didn't go well, Marino let me.
- 24:06Speaker 1: I want to hear about it. But I have to
- 24:08Speaker 1: tell you Marino, I think he's the I think Patrick
- 24:11Speaker 1: Mahomes probably the most talented guy to ever throw football,
- 24:14Speaker 1: but Marino's right there, and it might be Marino. I think,
- 24:17Speaker 1: had he won a title, I think he's the greatest
- 24:19Speaker 1: quarterback to ever throw a football. I I'll have this
- 24:23Speaker 1: argument until people don't want to hang out with me anymore.
- 24:26Speaker 1: He almost signed with the Vikings in two thousand for
- 24:29Speaker 1: a year, which would have been really fun. That was
- 24:33Speaker 1: the big thing when when they drafted Dante Culpepper, Marino
- 24:37Speaker 1: leaked out. He leaked it out recently, like in the
- 24:39Speaker 1: last few years. That after Wansted came in in that
- 24:43Speaker 1: last year and he was out, he had two options
- 24:45Speaker 1: to keep playing. One of them was Pittsburgh and one
- 24:48Speaker 1: of them was my One of them was Minnesota, and
- 24:50Speaker 1: I as a lifelong fan of him, that would have
- 24:53Speaker 1: been really, really fun. I also, do you remember when
- 24:57Speaker 1: he was on the CBS show Know, Yeah, did the
- 25:00Speaker 1: Morning's Have you ever seen any of the clips? He
- 25:04Speaker 1: has to be the most insanely competitive man on the earth.
- 25:07Speaker 1: They would show him because those guys sit in the
- 25:10Speaker 1: studio and watch the game. They would show him. There's
- 25:13Speaker 1: videos on YouTube if they're still up, of him watching
- 25:17Speaker 1: his records get broken, and it's a level of rage.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Roy.
- 25:25Speaker 1: What it's like is like a thirty year one night
- 25:28Speaker 1: or road Dog watching some kid open for him that
- 25:32Speaker 1: he just found out got a set on Colbert Like
- 25:36Speaker 1: that was the vibe, Oh god, the rage. I love Marina.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I got an invitation to the Dolphins facility. I
- 25:46Speaker 2: was good friends with the guy who at the time
- 25:48Speaker 2: was a beat writer for the Dolphins, and he and
- 25:51Speaker 2: I went to college together. Because any man, you're doing
- 25:53Speaker 2: a show down here, come on out and come to
- 25:57Speaker 2: the practice. So I figure, all right, I'll just wear
- 26:00Speaker 2: a jersey. The only jersey I had at the time
- 26:04Speaker 2: was a Miami Dolphins custom Jake Cutler jersey that I
- 26:09Speaker 2: had made as a joke. And it was the year
- 26:16Speaker 2: after they released Cutler. Cutler was off in the summer
- 26:21Speaker 2: or whatever on a yacht naked. I don't know if
- 26:24Speaker 2: you remember that photo where he was on a yacht
- 26:26Speaker 2: with some woman with his ass out or whatever, and
- 26:30Speaker 2: so everybody used to call Jay. There used to be
- 26:33Speaker 2: a meme on Twitter called smoking j where when Jake
- 26:37Speaker 2: Cutler was on the sideline, somebody added a cigarette to
- 26:40Speaker 2: his mouth to make it look like he really didn't
- 26:41Speaker 2: give up. And I think the play that defined Cutler's
- 26:44Speaker 2: time in Miami was he was lined up in the Wildcat,
- 26:49Speaker 2: he was lined out wide and he just straight up
- 26:52Speaker 2: didn't even try to run the play and the action
- 26:56Speaker 2: is happening away from him, but he doesn't even bother
- 26:59Speaker 2: trying to sell to the corner that's covering him. It
- 27:03Speaker 2: was like the most laziest shit. So his name is
- 27:06Speaker 2: dirt for the most part within the Dolphins organization. And
- 27:12Speaker 2: then who comes onto the practice field today and moron
- 27:17Speaker 2: in a J. Cutler jersey, going, man, I'm so happy
- 27:20Speaker 2: to meet you, mister Marino, and and like a guy
- 27:24Speaker 2: pulls me to the side with another jersey, Hey man,
- 27:27Speaker 2: why don't you just go put this one on real quick?
- 27:29Speaker 2: Just go. They wouldn't even let me go outside to
- 27:32Speaker 2: watch practice until I change shirts. The only thing I
- 27:36Speaker 2: can compare it to is like when you go, I
- 27:39Speaker 2: don't know if you've ever visited someone else's religious temple.
- 27:44Speaker 2: You know you're breaking a custom because everyone's looking at you,
- 27:47Speaker 2: but you don't know what you're doing wrong, Like is
- 27:50Speaker 2: my hat on? Should I take my shoes off? I'm
- 27:53Speaker 2: wearing a J. Cutler jersey at the Dolphins facil me
- 27:58Speaker 2: and that imagine waiting your entire career to meet the
- 28:03Speaker 2: man that was like an icon to you, but he
- 28:06Speaker 2: represents the organization and you're wearing the jersey of a
- 28:08Speaker 2: dude they just had to let go because he ran
- 28:10Speaker 2: shit into the ground. And it was just awkward for
- 28:13Speaker 2: the rest of the day for me at the facility.
- 28:19Speaker 2: The first couple of minutes, the people I met after.
- 28:21Speaker 2: They were very kind. This is pre Mike timeline. This
- 28:24Speaker 2: is the year after Cutler left, so this is like
- 28:27Speaker 2: five years ago, maybe six it And then here's the
- 28:32Speaker 2: other thing. Football is not that interesting to watch being practiced.
- 28:40Speaker 2: I was happy for the invite, I was happy for
- 28:42Speaker 2: the access. It was cool to see. But in the
- 28:45Speaker 2: bigger scheme of things, I wish I could have met
- 28:48Speaker 2: Dan Marino at an autograph show. Yeah, and it probably
- 28:50Speaker 2: would have gone a lot more smoother and simpler. But
- 28:54Speaker 2: you know, football is battle. It's two a days in
- 28:57Speaker 2: the Florida Sun.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I just got done being by another grown man just
- 29:02Speaker 1: two days ago. All the grown men hit me. I
- 29:05Speaker 1: don't wanna, I don't wanna mess around right now, get
- 29:09Speaker 1: me out of here.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and I and I really think of all the
- 29:11Speaker 2: professional athletes, football players are the toughest. They are straight
- 29:15Speaker 2: up gladiators. Man. So yeah, there ain't a lot of
- 29:19Speaker 2: chit chat. You just kind of wave if you look
- 29:21Speaker 2: up and make eye contact with one of the players
- 29:23Speaker 2: or something. But it was hope for a nod. Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 2: And then the only thing weirder than watching than having
- 29:32Speaker 2: an all access pass to watch football like I could
- 29:36Speaker 2: smell the players like I was close. The only thing
- 29:39Speaker 2: weirder than that is that people show up to watch
- 29:43Speaker 2: this in the preseason, Like I went to a Titan's practice,
- 29:48Speaker 2: just goofing off half drunk, and there people They're like, yeah, man,
- 29:53Speaker 2: I'm here to I'm here to see the team and
- 29:55Speaker 2: see all the half these is getting cut. No, I
- 30:00Speaker 2: get it. You get to see Derek Henry up closing
- 30:03Speaker 2: for free or eight dollars or whatever they charge. But
- 30:07Speaker 2: it was just such an to see people excited about practice,
- 30:12Speaker 2: Like you, you know, you you think you're a fan,
- 30:15Speaker 2: and then you go, oh, no, I'm not a fan.
- 30:17Speaker 2: He's a fan. I just like him. Like fans go
- 30:21Speaker 2: watch practice. So when people are a football fanily, you
- 30:25Speaker 2: know met Dan Marino bad under unfavorable condition. So it's fine,
- 30:32Speaker 2: it's fine to go watch them practice. But I just
- 30:34Speaker 2: read the watch. I'm just good just watching the game.
- 30:37Speaker 1: I like the games. I'm a big game guy. Yeah, yeah,
- 30:40Speaker 1: I think that's okay. I think that's okay to have
- 30:42Speaker 1: your your limit. I talk about that a lot on
- 30:44Speaker 1: the show. Like I love the Vikings. I love watching them,
- 30:46Speaker 1: my family watching them. It's been amazing to be a
- 30:49Speaker 1: part of the organization doing this show. But I have
- 30:53Speaker 1: a I think I have a good set of limits,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and I think that's an important thing in sports. And
- 30:59Speaker 1: I also think that there are certain people who can
- 31:01Speaker 1: handle like I think it's an individual thing, like how
- 31:05Speaker 1: what are you as a person able to handle in
- 31:08Speaker 1: terms of emotional like commitment and influence and stuff where
- 31:13Speaker 1: all of a sudden you have Like I think, one
- 31:15Speaker 1: guy can watch his favorite team all the time, watch
- 31:19Speaker 1: the practice, listen to games, and then be very normal.
- 31:22Speaker 1: If I did that right, I would be an absolute lunatic.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I would be the most unenjoyable person on the planet.
- 31:30Speaker 1: I have to set my boundaries and enjoy my team
- 31:34Speaker 1: as a fan correctly, or people will be like, so
- 31:36Speaker 1: I can't come to dinner. I hate him, he can't come.
- 31:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I just you know, I've tried to temper fandom.
- 31:42Speaker 2: You know, I grew up selling selling so I was
- 31:44Speaker 2: a stadium vendor at Alabama games in high school. Oh wow,
- 31:49Speaker 2: So I've seen fandom. I've seen like people fighting. But
- 31:52Speaker 2: the early days at the SEC Championship when it was
- 31:55Speaker 2: still played in Birmingham, when it was still building the
- 31:57Speaker 2: Georgia dun Oh wow, ninety one, the Jeens Starlins national
- 32:02Speaker 2: championship team. I saw Peyton Manning and College Jamal Lewis,
- 32:05Speaker 2: the Steve Spurrier old ball coach days with Danny Whirfol
- 32:10Speaker 2: and all of them mother they all came through Birmingham
- 32:13Speaker 2: and the fights you would see in the bathroom between
- 32:18Speaker 2: Florida fans and Alabama fans every year doing those national
- 32:22Speaker 2: championship there were those a SEC championship days. That was like, oh,
- 32:27Speaker 2: I'm not a fan. I just like, I'm not fighting
- 32:30Speaker 2: strangers on a piss covered floor because Eric Ritt is
- 32:36Speaker 2: a better running back than David Palmer. I'm not. I
- 32:39Speaker 2: did that just for the Viking fans by the way
- 32:43Speaker 2: out to deduce So like that, like or like when
- 32:48Speaker 2: I when I saw the Cubs win the World Series,
- 32:50Speaker 2: I'm a Cubs fan. And then I heard stories of
- 32:52Speaker 2: like guys who during Game seven took a radio and
- 32:56Speaker 2: listened to the game next to their father's grave because
- 33:00Speaker 2: their father never saw the Cubs. I'm not that big
- 33:04Speaker 2: of a fan. I'm happy for you.
- 33:07Speaker 1: You don't love the Cubs enough to be a part
- 33:10Speaker 1: of the start of a horror film.
- 33:11Speaker 2: No, No, like what if a hand comes up the
- 33:14Speaker 2: ground and goes, thank your son. You did it.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Roy, You're the best man.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Thank you for having me. Man. I appreciate it.
- 33:24Speaker 1: I really appreciate it, dude, thank you.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 33:27Speaker 1: That was the great Roy Wood. Now we need to
- 33:32Speaker 1: talk about what's right in front of us. Let's talk
- 33:35Speaker 1: a little bit of Bengals. Let's talk a little bit
- 33:37Speaker 1: of Saturday. Joining me to help with that, not just one,
- 33:41Speaker 1: I have two human beings from Cincinnati. Fantastic comedian, longtime
- 33:48Speaker 1: friend of mine, and a Bengals season ticket holder, the
- 33:52Speaker 1: great Alex Schubert. Hey, Buddy, Hey Cyrus.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I'm happy to be here.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Thank you for me on Man, I'm appreciated.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And also joining me is producer Jay Nelson, who I
- 34:02Speaker 1: have forced to be on this show because he and
- 34:04Speaker 1: I have been discussing this.
- 34:06Speaker 5: Game all year long.
- 34:07Speaker 1: I've spent a long time in Cincinnati. I've been looking
- 34:12Speaker 1: forward to this game. I've been riding the roller coaster.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I'm a fan that worries. We've established that on the show,
- 34:18Speaker 1: and earlier in the year I was like, oh shit,
- 34:22Speaker 1: we have to go play Joe Burrow. And then I
- 34:25Speaker 1: was like, oh boy, we get to play Jake Browning Jay,
- 34:29Speaker 1: And now, as you know, over the last two weeks
- 34:31Speaker 1: via my text, my attitude has shifted to, oh shit,
- 34:35Speaker 1: we have to go play Jake Browning.
- 34:38Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, it's the enemy that we actually know,
- 34:40Speaker 5: you know, with Jake Browning here at the Vikings for
- 34:43Speaker 5: a handful of years. And the thing about Jake Browning
- 34:45Speaker 5: is that he's been playing out of his mind the
- 34:47Speaker 5: last couple of weeks. So for me, it's been fun
- 34:50Speaker 5: to watch him do that and to see that, you know,
- 34:51Speaker 5: whenever you see somebody that you know succeeding, especially another spot.
- 34:55Speaker 5: The problem now is that we actually have to face him.
- 34:57Speaker 1: It's terrible. I congratulations, Alex. I'm so happy that in
- 35:02Speaker 1: a year in which we are seeing our fourth quarterback,
- 35:05Speaker 1: somehow one of our former backups is having a insanity
- 35:10Speaker 1: style moment. Also, let's talk about how bizarre the quarterback
- 35:16Speaker 1: carousel league wide has been. And for you guys especially
- 35:21Speaker 1: I know down there, when Burrow went down half the city,
- 35:25Speaker 1: if not more, we're like, it has to be aj McCarran.
- 35:29Speaker 1: And it has shifted quickly. There are a lot of
- 35:32Speaker 1: people walking the streets of Cincinnati admitting they had the
- 35:36Speaker 1: worst take a couple of weeks.
- 35:38Speaker 4: Ago, because it was after the Pittsburgh game. The Bengals
- 35:41Speaker 4: only put up ten points against a meager Pittsburgh defense.
- 35:45Speaker 4: And then we're like, we gotta get aj mccaeron and
- 35:46Speaker 4: because he almost wanted a playoff game for US seven
- 35:49Speaker 4: years ago. But then immediately, like when Browning blew up
- 35:53Speaker 4: on Monday night, it's oh, we might be fine, and
- 35:57Speaker 4: we're as just as surprise as you are.
- 36:00Speaker 1: And it's crazy how fine you've been. I mean, that
- 36:03Speaker 1: performance he put up against the Jags was bonkers, dropped
- 36:07Speaker 1: two thirty four point performances, and I would dislike you
- 36:12Speaker 1: and your team for it. But here's the thing. There
- 36:16Speaker 1: are very few organizations, not just in football but in
- 36:19Speaker 1: professional sports that go through the tortured fan base experience. Yes,
- 36:24Speaker 1: now there are teams like the Jaguars who haven't done
- 36:27Speaker 1: much of anything, they haven't been around that long. But
- 36:30Speaker 1: I'm talking the Cincinnati Bengals, you know, the Cubs before
- 36:34Speaker 1: they won the World Series. There are a small handful
- 36:38Speaker 1: of these teams. Alex and you and your fan base.
- 36:42Speaker 1: It's it's hard to have any animosity for a team
- 36:45Speaker 1: who's had it so horribly for so long.
- 36:49Speaker 4: I remember, so I have a story about this. I
- 36:51Speaker 4: was at a game in twenty fifteen. The Bengals started
- 36:55Speaker 4: eight and oh that year, and the ninth game was
- 36:58Speaker 4: a Monday night game against the Texans, which we lost
- 37:03Speaker 4: and was the close game. We lost it, and there
- 37:05Speaker 4: was one fan that shouted same old Bengals. I was like,
- 37:11Speaker 4: your eight and one? How but shoobs? What happened at
- 37:18Speaker 4: the end of that season. AJ mccaron came in and
- 37:22Speaker 4: we thought we had a playoff victory.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Same old Bengals. That man, you think that's a funny story.
- 37:30Speaker 1: The man was right, and that's what I'm saying. That's
- 37:33Speaker 1: why it's I can't attack the Bengals fan base. I
- 37:36Speaker 1: think there's a kindred nature to our two teams. Now
- 37:39Speaker 1: that being said, I want you to lose and lose
- 37:43Speaker 1: miserably on this. We have to play on Saturday, which
- 37:47Speaker 1: is warping my brain as we approach the weekend. I
- 37:51Speaker 1: don't I don't. I know we're getting closer and closer
- 37:54Speaker 1: to football every day of the week, but the Saturday
- 37:56Speaker 1: thing just never sinks correctly in my brain. Uh, Jay,
- 38:02Speaker 1: you have been egging me on with here's what the
- 38:06Speaker 1: people need to know about me. What I do every
- 38:09Speaker 1: year is I emotionally circle on on the schedule games
- 38:17Speaker 1: that I think we are going to succeed in and
- 38:21Speaker 1: games that I think we're going to struggle in, and
- 38:23Speaker 1: then there's this extra set of games that are games
- 38:26Speaker 1: that we should succeed in and we won't. And you,
- 38:31Speaker 1: as a friend slash terrible person, have taken a lot
- 38:35Speaker 1: of the moment Burrow went down, I was like, that's
- 38:38Speaker 1: the one. Yeah, that's the one I didn't I didn't
- 38:40Speaker 1: see the Bears coming. Yes, I did not see that
- 38:42Speaker 1: one coming. But I've had this one circled and you
- 38:46Speaker 1: have been egging it on by showing basically this Chase
- 38:52Speaker 1: Brown thing. Chase Brown has been nuts for the Bengals.
- 38:55Speaker 1: They had, they have been terrible all season in the run,
- 38:59Speaker 1: all of a sudden, they their version of Devin ah Chan,
- 39:02Speaker 1: their version of Tony Pollard, their version of who pick
- 39:06Speaker 1: your fast speedy, you know, lightning back, and their team
- 39:10Speaker 1: is just entirely different.
- 39:12Speaker 5: Well, what's crazy to me is that Joe Mixon has
- 39:14Speaker 5: been just such a workhorse for those guys that he's
- 39:16Speaker 5: been mister reliable, and then for them to all of
- 39:19Speaker 5: a sudden have their backup also blowing up here for
- 39:22Speaker 5: the last couple weeks. Like the thing that drives me
- 39:24Speaker 5: nuts about that is you go, oh, we got one
- 39:26Speaker 5: guy stopped, and the next guy comes in gives a
- 39:28Speaker 5: completely different look, and it kind of reminds me a
- 39:30Speaker 5: little bit of when we had Delvin Cook and Alexander Madison.
- 39:34Speaker 5: Get a little bit of your thunder and lightning there
- 39:36Speaker 5: with those guys. And so that's something that's really concerning
- 39:38Speaker 5: me this weekend about what the heck are we going
- 39:40Speaker 5: to see coming out of the backfield there in Cincinnati.
- 39:43Speaker 1: That's the other thing. The AFC is wild. This isn't
- 39:46Speaker 1: the Tom Brady AFC, and it's not the even the
- 39:49Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes of last year or the year before. AFC.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Every single team seems beatable on any given week. If
- 39:56Speaker 1: you told me that Joe Flacco and the Browns we're
- 40:00Speaker 1: gonna be in the AFC Championship, no shit, I would
- 40:03Speaker 1: believe it. If you told there's not a team that
- 40:06Speaker 1: you can tell me in the AFC that's in the
- 40:08Speaker 1: picture that I wouldn't buy into on some level, and
- 40:13Speaker 1: so on the scale of man, we thought our season
- 40:17Speaker 1: was dead and all of a sudden two thirty four
- 40:19Speaker 1: point performances later, we got a shot to win the
- 40:22Speaker 1: playoffs like that versus oh my god, if we had
- 40:25Speaker 1: finally got healthy, t Higgins comes back, Chase Brown is back,
- 40:29Speaker 1: and everybody's playing with if we had Joe Burrow, we
- 40:30Speaker 1: might be a super Bowl contender. Like, where are you
- 40:33Speaker 1: existing on the emotional fans scale? Is it more just
- 40:37Speaker 1: happy to be in the playoff race or more like,
- 40:40Speaker 1: holy shit, if Joe Burrow wouldn't have got hurt, this
- 40:43Speaker 1: could have maybe been our year. With how wide open
- 40:46Speaker 1: the AFC is.
- 40:47Speaker 4: Well for me, I know now that we have Burrow,
- 40:51Speaker 4: I know that this is not out like we didn't
- 40:53Speaker 4: lose our last chance because Burrow is out for the year,
- 40:56Speaker 4: but he's also gonna come back next year. He's gonna
- 40:59Speaker 4: have Chase, maybe he has Higgins, wh knows he'll have Boyd.
- 41:03Speaker 4: He'll still have his full weapons around him and an
- 41:06Speaker 4: improving offensive line. So with this year, I'm like, if
- 41:10Speaker 4: we get a wild card win or even a divisional win,
- 41:14Speaker 4: I'll be thrilled, especially with the backup.
- 41:16Speaker 1: But now I'm gonna push I am gonna push back
- 41:19Speaker 1: on you. It's about to get weird for you, and
- 41:21Speaker 1: I don't I don't mean to bully you on the show,
- 41:23Speaker 1: but it's all I talk about this show. For people
- 41:25Speaker 1: who listen, they have to listen for the great guests,
- 41:28Speaker 1: because I say the same four or five things week
- 41:31Speaker 1: in and week out. I already said this on the
- 41:34Speaker 1: section with Roy, but your boys getting paid.
- 41:38Speaker 2: As he is.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Next week it starts. It's gonna be really interesting that
- 41:42Speaker 1: I'm fascinated by which guys can continue to elevate a
- 41:46Speaker 1: roster when they don't have as good a roster as
- 41:49Speaker 1: they had when they were on their rookie deal. So
- 41:51Speaker 1: I I will say because I was down in Cincinnati
- 41:55Speaker 1: spending time in Cincinnati when they went on their Super
- 41:58Speaker 1: Bowl run that first year, Yep, it was fascinating to me.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And I remember doing this as a kid. When the
- 42:06Speaker 1: ninety eight Vikings lost in the NFC Championship, I was crushed,
- 42:10Speaker 1: but I also remember thinking, well, this is just the start.
- 42:15Speaker 1: We're gonna do this a whole bunch of more times.
- 42:19Speaker 1: And that was the vibe in Cincinnati. It was people
- 42:22Speaker 1: were bummed, but everybody's like, well see you next year.
- 42:25Speaker 1: It doesn't work like that.
- 42:27Speaker 4: I think that's kind of the hope. Right now, like
- 42:29Speaker 4: this year, the AFC is so wide open. There are
- 42:32Speaker 4: six teams right now that are seven and six, and
- 42:35Speaker 4: the Bengals are one of them. And it seems like
- 42:37Speaker 4: of those six teams, the Bengals have the most momentum,
- 42:41Speaker 4: maybe out of all six.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Of them, absolutely and maybe weirdly, one of the least
- 42:46Speaker 1: flawed teams. If Jake Browning can be a legitimate game
- 42:49Speaker 1: manager and Jay that's why I've been scared of it
- 42:51Speaker 1: the whole time. I think they just have a lot
- 42:53Speaker 1: of pieces and there aren't. Interestingly, these two teams look
- 42:56Speaker 1: a lot alike to me. Yeah, you know they have
- 43:00Speaker 1: they're running with a backup quarterback and all the weapons
- 43:02Speaker 1: are getting healthy Because we just found out Jefferson's gonna
- 43:05Speaker 1: play right.
- 43:06Speaker 5: Thanks to the child reporter at the Christmas gifting event
- 43:10Speaker 5: that he had. The kid was pressing him as he's
- 43:12Speaker 5: walking down the aisle, and then Justin actually admits, Yeah,
- 43:14Speaker 5: I'm going to be playing Saturday.
- 43:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:16Speaker 1: So no, for people who haven't seen that on social
- 43:18Speaker 1: JJ and I believe kJ Osborne, Yep, we're doing a
- 43:22Speaker 1: gift thing with They brought a bunch of kids into
- 43:25Speaker 1: Target bought a bunch of gifts. It's a really great video,
- 43:28Speaker 1: but one of the kids just wouldn't let it go shoots.
- 43:32Speaker 1: He was like, are you playing? Tell me? Are you Like?
- 43:36Speaker 1: He just kept going at him. And that's literally there
- 43:39Speaker 1: are reports all over the internet now that and they
- 43:42Speaker 1: don't even mention the kid. That's the crazy thing. Yeah,
- 43:44Speaker 1: I'll be on Instagram and it'll be like breaking news.
- 43:48Speaker 1: JJ says he'll play this weekend. Nobody cited the kid.
- 43:52Speaker 1: The kid is getting absolutely no credit. But Jay, that's it.
- 43:56Speaker 1: They are. It is very, very similar teams. It's kind
- 43:59Speaker 1: of that Spider Man meme. Yeah, a bunch of weapons,
- 44:02Speaker 1: a backup quarterback, a defense that can be really good
- 44:06Speaker 1: and let's see what happens.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:07Speaker 5: And I think the thing for us right now is
- 44:09Speaker 5: there's been this kind of backs against the wall mentality
- 44:12Speaker 5: for the last five games at this point. When Kirk
- 44:15Speaker 5: went out after that that Green Bay game, I think
- 44:17Speaker 5: there was really a rallying within the locker room saying
- 44:19Speaker 5: like cas is not dead. We're still fighting at this point.
- 44:22Speaker 5: And so for us, it's been something where we've been
- 44:24Speaker 5: in this kind of go mode for the last five games.
- 44:26Speaker 5: And I think when you look at a team like Cincinnati,
- 44:28Speaker 5: as dangerous as they are and multiple weapons, especially an offense,
- 44:31Speaker 5: and then you're getting the backup quarterback. It's not like
- 44:34Speaker 5: you're getting him one week off of you his first start.
- 44:37Speaker 5: You've seen a little bit of tape on him, and
- 44:39Speaker 5: you've kind of known who he was inside this building.
- 44:41Speaker 5: So at least for us, we kind of know what
- 44:43Speaker 5: we're up against, and hopefully that's going to help with
- 44:45Speaker 5: Flores's game plan going into the game here on Saturday.
- 44:48Speaker 1: It'll be shoobes. It's hard to not ask a very
- 44:51Speaker 1: generic question right now. Okay, the Belichick coaching tree thrives
- 44:57Speaker 1: against backup and quarterbacks. Confusion is the name of the game,
- 45:04Speaker 1: and Flores has played it very very well all year long.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I'm curious, from your perspective as a Bengals fan, what
- 45:13Speaker 1: has to go right for your team this weekend? Like,
- 45:18Speaker 1: answer this question, If blank happens on Sunday, the Bengals
- 45:22Speaker 1: are probably going to win this game.
- 45:24Speaker 4: So one area that the Bengals have massively struggled in
- 45:28Speaker 4: which the Vikings are one of the probably the best
- 45:31Speaker 4: things in the NFL, is the Bengals have really struggled
- 45:33Speaker 4: to cover tight ends, and you guys happen to have
- 45:37Speaker 4: one of the best tight ends in the NFL in TJ.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Hockinson.
- 45:41Speaker 1: And I'm not going to pile on here, but you
- 45:42Speaker 1: and I have gone back and forth about this a
- 45:44Speaker 1: lot because you got IRV Smith, and I have family
- 45:48Speaker 1: members who I watched jay this offseason when the Bengals
- 45:54Speaker 1: got IRV Smith. I watched Shoobes be enthusiastic about IRV
- 46:00Speaker 1: Smith and hopeful, and then I watched family members of
- 46:03Speaker 1: mine ridicule him. Sure, and it was a fascinating dynamic.
- 46:08Speaker 1: And now we get to see Irv. It just hasn't
- 46:10Speaker 1: turned out for you guys on tight end. You lost
- 46:13Speaker 1: Hayden Hurst. You can't. You haven't put yards on the
- 46:15Speaker 1: board on offense. But you're right, more importantly, you can't
- 46:18Speaker 1: stop it. It's almost a two way problem.
- 46:21Speaker 4: There was a tweet a couple weeks ago that I
- 46:22Speaker 4: think a betting site put out that said, this man
- 46:25Speaker 4: is going to score tonight, and it was a picture
- 46:27Speaker 4: of Evan Ingram for the Bengals Jags game, and he
- 46:30Speaker 4: did on top of nine receptions in eighty two yards.
- 46:34Speaker 1: Yeah, it's and I gotta tell you, I think Hokinson
- 46:37Speaker 1: and the team need that. I think they need to
- 46:39Speaker 1: get right tight end week. So I would be happy
- 46:43Speaker 1: for Zach Taylor and company to just lay that out
- 46:47Speaker 1: for us. Now here's the thing I might come to
- 46:49Speaker 1: the game this weekend.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Alex.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Okay, Jay. One thing you need to know about Alex
- 46:53Speaker 1: is he made a I'm gonna call it a lunatic decision.
- 46:58Speaker 1: He loves the Bengals, made an take decision to buy
- 47:01Speaker 1: a single season ticket, and that either means you're one
- 47:06Speaker 1: of the biggest fans in the stadium or one of
- 47:08Speaker 1: the biggest wild cards as a human being. Alex might
- 47:11Speaker 1: be both.
- 47:12Speaker 5: I was gonna say, I think the ANSWER's got to
- 47:13Speaker 5: be both on that one.
- 47:15Speaker 1: He's potentially both.
- 47:16Speaker 4: It's both.
- 47:17Speaker 1: But the Bengals fan base, this isn't Philadelphia, There's not
- 47:21Speaker 1: There's not going to be an aggression down there. But shoobes,
- 47:25Speaker 1: what is the what is the emotional vibe of the
- 47:29Speaker 1: Bengals fan Because it to me, if I had to
- 47:32Speaker 1: describe it, I think that and this is how I
- 47:35Speaker 1: think a lot of Viking fans feel. But I think
- 47:39Speaker 1: they view themselves as Charlie Brown about to kick the
- 47:44Speaker 1: football that Lucy's holding.
- 47:47Speaker 4: And it's just instead of him missing it, it just
- 47:49Speaker 4: clanks off the upright.
- 47:50Speaker 5: But the thing is, shoobes. You can't take that from us. Literally,
- 47:52Speaker 5: Charlie Brown's from Minnesota.
- 47:54Speaker 1: At this point, I was I, here's the thing. We
- 47:57Speaker 1: don't talk a lot of shit on this show, but
- 47:59Speaker 1: I've known Alex for twelve years and he's such a
- 48:01Speaker 1: sweet person. I just teed you up for the easiest
- 48:06Speaker 1: comeback stab, and you were too nice to let it happen.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I can't be a part of it. I don't talk
- 48:12Speaker 1: a lot of trash, but I will talk it in
- 48:14Speaker 1: this matchup. But I don't know. I think it's gonna
- 48:17Speaker 1: be a really interesting game. I think it'll be wild
- 48:19Speaker 1: to see Jake Browning. I never feel good playing a
- 48:24Speaker 1: prominent player that used to be on our squad. I
- 48:27Speaker 1: think professional athletes, no matter if they're a third stringer
- 48:30Speaker 1: getting their first start or a Hall of Famer, they
- 48:33Speaker 1: thrive on this shit. They love this. This is like
- 48:37Speaker 1: the psychology that makes someone achieve at the highest level
- 48:42Speaker 1: in athletics. You know, it drives the mentality that I
- 48:48Speaker 1: expect Jake Browning to come out with something to prove.
- 48:50Speaker 1: I expect this to be a really, really tough game.
- 48:54Speaker 1: I want to do predictions here, shoobes. We make everybody
- 48:56Speaker 1: do it each week. I know you're gonna be there
- 48:58Speaker 1: on Saturday. What do you got in this game? What
- 49:01Speaker 1: do you what do you think the final score is
- 49:02Speaker 1: gonna be?
- 49:03Speaker 4: I think if the Bengals can cover Hockinson and Justin Jefferson,
- 49:08Speaker 4: which very tall task.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Not possible.
- 49:10Speaker 4: No, it's not, especially since we're down KM Taylor, but
- 49:13Speaker 4: which sucks. But I'm gonna say, for my sake, with
- 49:19Speaker 4: the uncertainty, that the Vikings of a cord because this
- 49:21Speaker 4: is Nick Mullens's first starting like two years, so I'm
- 49:24Speaker 4: gonna say Bengals twenty three, Vikings twenty. I'm sorry, Sacket.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Well, don't apologize. Be a grown up. The I refuse
- 49:33Speaker 1: to apologize for my score prediction. And I'm not even
- 49:36Speaker 1: gonna normally I tee it up. I'm not gonna tee
- 49:39Speaker 1: it up. I didn't like that apology. Thirteen for the Bengals,
- 49:42Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty eight for the Vikings. Okay, that's
- 49:46Speaker 1: what I expect. It's not the jay The bit doesn't
- 49:48Speaker 1: work that well, when I deliver it like that, I
- 49:50Speaker 1: just didn't like. I didn't like being apologized to. I'm
- 49:54Speaker 1: the one that worries about my team, not you. Thank
- 49:57Speaker 1: you guys for doing it. I really appreciate it. Thanks
- 49:59Speaker 1: to the great Joy Wood, Junior, Alex Schubert, Jye Nelson.
- 50:03Speaker 1: We will see you guys all next week. Join PA
