1:15

1:19
sit down with Kayla Ross. She's a wide receiver and quarterback for the Minnesota
1:23
Vixen of the Women's Football Alliance, a Full eleven on eleven pads and Tackle
1:27
Football League. Kayla and Carl discuss her journey to pro football, her vision
1:32
of the future of women's sports and football, and if the moment for women's
1:36
pro sports has finally arrived and how best to capture that moment. Now,
1:40
let's get to the conversation. Hollo, ladies and gentlemen. This is Carly
1:42
with Let's talk. And I am in Minnesota this today, and so I
1:49

2:13
Well, I gotta, I gotta actually, yeah, see today I am
2:19
all messed up because we've been running around, we've been trying to get this
2:23
show set and and so give me help me with this okay, in your
2:30
introduction, In your introduction, help me with because we're gonna talk about something
2:35
that I did not know, Okay, and I'm wondering if people knew and
2:43
if and again because this will probably get some airtime here in Minneapolis. So
2:46
there's some people who know you. Sure you know, there's people who know
2:51
you and know the game that we're gonna talk about today. And I don't
2:55
want to. I don't want to ruin that. Tell me give me your
3:00
full name, and give me your sport, your favorite sport, and don't
3:07
elaborate in the sport. Just give me your favorite sport. Okay. So
3:12
my name is Kayla Ross. I grew up here in Minnesota, and we
3:15
met before. Yes, we met actually like a little sort of meet and
3:19
greet situation a long time ago, a couple of years ago. And right
3:23
now, I'm a school teacher. I teach pe and health. I love
3:28
my job. I've been around sports my whole life, mainly basketball. I
3:32
have to see that my favorite sport is football. Okay. Now you ended
3:40
up we started talking about doing this show, and I'm trying to figure out
3:46
why I did not know that there was professional football for women. I do
3:54
I remember way back in the day when it first came out. Yep,
4:00
have not heard anything else remotely about it going on or even how big it
4:06
is here in Minnesota. How do I how do I not know? How
4:10
do people not know that there is professional football women's professional football and no one
4:18
knows about it? A lot of people don't know that. You're yeah,
4:21
You're not alone in that. I think there are a few reasons when when
4:25
we talk about women's sport in general, right the media coverage, and I
4:29
think you talked about that in your last podcast. You had media coverage.
4:33
We don't typically get the same coverage as you know men's sports do, and
4:40
so we struggle in that way, things like funding, resources, sponsorships and
4:46
those for an organization to run right, money is an important piece. And
4:54
however, I will say over the past five years, specifically on my team,
5:00
which is the Minnesota Vixen, we've seen a big growth in media coverage
5:06
and in funding. We actually are seeing more of that. Does that have
5:11
anything to do with the way the WNBA is taken off or is that just
5:15
because of the sport itself? And that's the thing is when we talk about
5:18
women's football, not just women's sport, but women's football, I think such
5:24
because it's such a male dominated sport, right, Like you don't when you
5:28
think of football, you don't think of women, right or not binary athletes.
5:31
You think of men. So I think just because the societal norms around
5:35
it too. It's like unheard of to hear and when you hear about it,
5:39
you're like, wait, what do you mean pro? There's a pro
5:41
level, right, because there's actually different We actually have different divisions within the
5:46
WSA three, right, Yeah, so D three, D two and then
5:48
pro is our D one. We call it pro and so you know,
5:53
it's growing and growing and growing. Actually, the Minnesota Vixen have been around
5:58
since nineteen ninety nine. We were the first professional or women's tackle football team
6:03
in the nation. Minnesota was and not again, I'm how long ago was
6:10
that, because I remember that being talked about and I don't know, I
6:15
don't like it. Like once that I heard it, I never heard any
6:19
follow up about it. Yeah, I think it. You know, I
6:25
was talking with her owner about this a couple of days ago when when it
6:29
first came to be, there was only like what twenty five people trying out
6:32
for this team fifty people trying out, you know, the level of skill
6:35
or play you know, maybe wasn't as diverse as you see now because now
6:40
twenty five, twenty six years later, we're getting one hundred and fifty women
6:45
trying out for the team, right, And so the actually the level of
6:47
skill, there's more selection things like that. Who're actually seeing a more competitive
6:53
game too. The game itself is evolving for women, it's in it and
6:56
again it's still developing. I think that's another piece to point out, is
7:00
that women's football specifically is still developing. You know, when you talk about
7:04
men's football, young boys have a chance to put on the pads, put
7:09
on the helmet and play at what's six, seven, eight years old,
7:12
right, and they're on an all boys team. That's actually our youth football
7:15
starts at five. Who yeah, So I make the case that's probably too
7:19
young. We started at seven. I think that's probably the right age.
7:26
But again to your point, you're starting at such a young age and unless
7:30
you play on a boy's team at that level, which I don't know how
7:36
many moms or dads are gonna want that to happen, right, And so
7:42
the point being like young girls are necessarily having that opportunity to start that young
7:46
to you know, develop those skills till then they're at my age twenty five.
7:50
Who do you when you say that, are you saying are you saying
7:54
it because the league or not? Or parents are just not? I mean
7:59
just I mean it could be both. I mean, like you said,
8:01
parents, do they want their young girls going into playing tackle football at seven
8:05
years old? Right? Or is it that there's not the there's no societal
8:11
norm around it, there's no what team are they going to? You know,
8:13
when I when I was in middle school, I told my parents,
8:16
say I want to play some football, and you know, my dad was
8:18
like, hey, yeah, let's go. And he's like, bull,
8:20
yeah, we got to put you on a boys team, right, There's
8:20
no girls team for me. So I did play I think a year or
8:24
two in middle school with an all boys team, and then you know,
8:31
I ended up dropping out of that because people, you know, and girls
8:33
and boys grow differently and so you have to part ways with that. But
8:37
what I would love is there to be a somewhere some time where it's a
8:46
norm for there to be women playing football. And it's not this I've never
8:50
heard of this before well, and is it to the point you made just
8:54
a second ago which kind of changed the direction for you of getting out of
9:01
it. You know, there's there's the whole locker room issues, all of
9:07
that kind of stuff, But does it really that doesn't seem to be a
9:11
major problem to me in all reality. I mean, there's there's boys and
9:16
girls locker rooms almost everywhere you go. There's not just men's because everybody's playing
9:20
either a middle school or a high school, so there's two locker rooms,
9:26
and so there's I don't see that being an issue, but I think we
9:31
use that as an issue to kind of hinder the sport the females into the
9:39
sport. Am I Am I wrong on that judgment. I see what you're
9:43
saying. I see what you're saying. I think though women or girls playing
9:48
with other women girls, I think is really important to have that space and
9:52
an option. And I actually, you know I see that with the development
9:56
of play right now, it's an Olympic sports. There's some word around about
10:01
it. It's high schools are making it a sport that you can opt into
10:07
playing. And they have it for girls right all girls flag football team.
10:11
And you've seen amazing athletes going out there and playing flag. I wish that
10:13
same norm kind of went along with women's tackle football, and I get some
10:20
like hesitation around it, but I'm telling you, I'm playing with other women
10:26
and non binary athletes in the league, and they're incredible athletes, right,
10:33
And you've used the word athlete like a couple of times now. One of
10:39
the things that when I think about football, and I think when people when
10:43
when the general public thinks about football and women, yes, the first thing
10:48
that I think comes out of everybody's mouth is the physicality. Yes, And
10:54
can women have that physicality? Well? You know, I mean you're starting
11:01
to look just with the with the w n b A. You you you
11:03
see that that game is more physical and and and the actions that players are
11:09
taking against other players are uniquely to them. That doesn't happen in the NBA
11:16
because you know, that's that's that's gonna bring the benches out on the court
11:20
and everybody's going to blows. But for the women, they they're having this
11:26
physicality in basketball, which kind of shows that Okay, they they can be
11:33
physical. And I think I think that is usually like the hindrance of most
11:39
men is like that the women can't be and I can and and I'm going
11:43
to practice today if if if the weather holds up, I'm gonna go to
11:48
practice because I want. I want to see it, you know, because
11:52
I've never I've never, ever ever ever seen it. So I can't wait.
11:58
I'm excited to see it. Yes, it's I'll tell you. Uh,
12:03
they're physical. I play wide receiver, so I am getting tackle right
12:09
and I can tell you they hit. There's there's women on my team that
12:13
are just I mean, I don't know. I think they're hitting harder than
12:16
the boys out there. I started got like, I'm like, I do
12:20
not want to be in their line of sight. It's and you know what
12:24
people ask, you know, why why do why do women want to play
12:26
football in the first place? Right? Like where's that? And then I
12:30
challenged, you know, as a man, why do you why do you
12:33
play football? Why did you play football? It was just it was the
12:37
sport that my dad he played the old sandlot leagues, and and me and
12:43
him share that that passion of the game. And he was because you know,
12:50
sandlight, no helmets, no shoulder pads, it's just you know,
12:52
just out there just tackling. So he was an extremely physical, tough kind
12:58
of guy, and and he he he wanted me to play, but I
13:07
wanted to play. You know, we were both Cleveland Browns fans. And
13:11
there was something to me about the physicality of it that my dad loved and
13:18
he kind of passed that on to me. And so I loved the idea
13:22
of hitting somebody, like I just there was something about it. There was
13:28
something you know, I ran track, So if you if you run one
13:33
hundred meters and you win it, there's something about that feeling that you get.
13:39
Yes, And to me, hitting was exactly the same way like if
13:43
I if I hit somebody and I hit him hard, and it's like and
13:46
the fans are like who like? To me, like, there's there's nothing
13:50
better than that. And my dad was always about you know, and this
13:56
is this is before you know, all the brains stuff and all this kind
14:01
of stuff before the and again all the protection is rightly in place to try
14:05
to protect the players. But back in the day, my dad would tell
14:09
me, like, you know, run through his neck, like you know,
14:13
you ought to hit him, or you should have hit him, and
14:16
you should have hit him like in his neck, and you can come out
14:18
the back of the outside of him, you know, And so I'm hearing
14:22
that, and then I know that if I don't do that, we're going
14:26
to have another conversation. Why didn't you hit him? So for me,
14:31
I didn't know anything but the physicality of the game and then getting to coming
14:37
here in Minnesota and then becoming a corner back. Typically corners don't necessarily supposedly
14:43
aren't supposed to be that physical, you know, or the rap on them
14:48
wasn't that so much because you're not doing a lot of tapping, But there
14:54
were, you know, I was on special teams and I had an opportunity
14:56
to make some really really big hits that you know, that I'm proud of,
15:01
and I just and it was just part of who I was. It
15:03
was like just the makeup of what my dad instilled in me. And it's
15:07
not even my personality because I don't come, I don't I'm not like,
15:11
I don't consider myself a tough guy walking around or anything like that. But
15:16
on football field, it's a total different thing. And so so so it
15:22
was it was embedded in me with my dad. Where So to my point,
15:28
the reason I asked that is because it's the same for women. It's
15:31
people in general. Why do people like football? They like that? Maybe
15:35
they like that side on defense where they like to hit right, they like
15:37
to be aggressive like that. For me, like, I'm not on defense.
15:43
I'm not a big like, oh I'm gonna take her out. I'm
15:45
not built like that, Okay, but I really enjoy like the mental side
15:50
of the sport connects with the physical. I think football is like the most
15:56
intricate intriguing sports there is. Honestly, when you think about in the scheme
16:00
of like sports, I think it's just that that's where I feel like the
16:06
mental side of it. Okay. So I can hear the passion in in
16:11
in your conversation and talking about where did that like when and how did that
16:17
get into you? Honestly, I think my dad too. I think,
16:19
yeah, he's a huge Vikings fan, loved to be unlike somebody else whose
16:25
house has Steeler names Stiller Nation. We won't talk too much about that,
16:30
but yeah, I mean I grew up watching football. I'm really a big
16:34
Steelers fan, NFL fan in general. And I think when I was young,
16:38
and I said in middle school, I just wanted to try I'm like
16:41
I don't want to be a quarterback, you know, I just want to
16:42
try this out. And uh just I'm competitive, like in everything, like
16:48
board games, I'm talking anything, I'm competitive at it. So football for
16:52
me is like the highest level of like a mental thing sport you could play,
16:59
especially being core because I play quarterback too, and I think it's just
17:03
you don't get that in like other sports, Like I played basketball my whole
17:07
life. It's a very it's a very fun, uh you know, pretty
17:11
physical kind of mental game where it's back and forth, it's a quick going.
17:14
Football is just like to the next level. I don't know how to
17:18
explain that other than the the the mental toughness it takes to play football,
17:25
and a lot of people they don't they don't know that, right, you
17:29
know, and they've never if you've never played football, and you've never because
17:33
it takes you to get hit, and then how you get hit and what
17:37
you think about after that hit can determine whether or not you're going to be
17:41
a player, because that first hit that you're going to get hit and and
17:48
you're like laying there and like, oh my gosh, I think I'm they
17:51
got dead. Right, If you get up and assume and stay in that
17:56
space. Football is probably not going to be for you. But if you
17:59
get up and think to yourself, Okay, he got me, I'm gonna
18:03
get him back, you know. And again I hate I don't want to
18:07
sound like I'm saying stuff like a dirty part of the game, but it's
18:11
just to to the point of the mindset. You have to be in a
18:15
mindset to where you know you're gonna get hit. You as a receiver,
18:21
you know that there's gonna be a time you're gonna go out try to kiss
18:23
the ball. Somebody's gonna go light you up. Now, the question is
18:29
is what happens when you get up? What is in the mind when you
18:33
get up? And because you like, you have to go past it,
18:37
yes, And I think to be good, to be great, I think
18:42
you have to be able to get past that at each level. And I
18:45
think it's I think it gets worse at each level. And so I think
18:49
in order for you to get to somebody, I think somebody somebody had said
18:53
something on on on Facebook about getting to the you know, getting to the
19:00
next level basically what it takes. And I and I and I really don't
19:08
know if if that's you know, even if you type it out and it's
19:14
right, you don't have any idea, you know what I'm saying, Like
19:18
like you like for a female saying you know that might even let's say even
19:23
may have your built and say, oh, I could probably play receiver in
19:26
that lead. That's easy to say. It is. That's easy to say,
19:30
but it is, it is. It is different. You know,
19:33
we're talking about what the weather might be and you're talking about, well,
19:37
we're gonna probably have practice one way or the other. We're gonna have,
19:40
you know. And some folks like not stereotyping, but some women don't want
19:45
to They would not want to be in the rank. Some gys don't want
19:48
to be out in the rain, you know. And I'm like, if
19:52
it's rain and it rain, we're gonna play. We're gonna play in the
19:56
rain. We're gonna practice, right right, best player, best player that
20:03
you've that you faced thus far as a receiver, Who's who's the best player,
20:11
and that your worst hit somebody who's already have you have you had that
20:17
big hit already? Honestly, I've had them in practice more than I haven't.
20:21
Okay, Okay, because you know the I would say, and this.
20:26
I can't remember her name right now, and it's number seven on the
20:32
Saint Louis Slam. Okay, I get it to give her a shout out
20:34
here. I played against your last weekend. I played against her earlier this
20:38
year. She's probably the most She's a very tough defender because she's technical,
20:45
she's aggressive. Oh she can hit, but she's it's like a mind game
20:49
when we go out there and I see I'm facing her, I've got to
20:53
really really think through how I'm gonna run this route. She's inside shage,
20:57
she's turned here, is playing cover three, you know whatever, and she's
21:00
fast and quick, aggressive. She's playing the game for I don't even know
21:03
how long. She's well respected in the league. And it's for me to
21:08
be able to go up against somebody. I'm my second year in this league,
21:11
right, So I played a little bit of backup quarterback last year,
21:15
didn't do much playing time. This year, I'm playing wide receiver. I'm
21:19
starting at wide receiver, which it can be intimidating going up against a girl
21:23
who's been in the league for fifteen years, right or something like that,
21:26
you know, so I learn every time I'm out there though, and by
21:33
the end, you know, towards the middle of the game, I'm figuring
21:36
it out a little bit, right, Like I'm starting to know what works
21:38
and what does kind of game planning, scouting a little bit right after a
21:42
couple you know, a few of those reps, you start to know.
21:45
And that's why I think is so great about about this is like all of
21:51
these women are are developing. We all are kind of starting from from ground
21:56
up. And I actually I have a teammate who is retired. She was
22:00
Her name was Red. I'll give a shout out to Red real quick.
22:03
Red was on my team from the very first year they started, so she
22:07
was on the team for twenty five years. She's in her fifties. She
22:10
plays like she's twenty five though, I mean she she's a D lineman,
22:15
and it was incredible to be on a team with somebody who who is that
22:18
much of a legend for women's football, right and now she coaches on her
22:22
team, she's a D line coach. And I just think being in this
22:29
atmosphere with these women who either are new to the sport been playing it for
22:33
years, we're all learning. We're all like supporting each other. It's kind
22:37
of weird because like we'll play each other and we're like, I don't know,
22:40
like I was exchanging some words with the corner of the other day at
22:42
custin or something. You know, we're like fight and then at the end
22:45
of the game we all both teams circle up. You know. Actually it's
22:48
a it's a kind of like a little bonding moment where we all kind of
22:52
like the NFL players do at the game, right, and it's just like,
22:55
hey, we're here to like lift each other up, make each other
22:56
better. Is there has there been a moment that like you kind of would
23:06
yourself like you like you like, did I really do that? Or did
23:11
that really just happen? You know, like like something that you were like,
23:15
even though you like felt comfortable about knowing that you could play, what
23:22
was that aha moment that you were like, okay, because like I said,
23:26
you've only been in now for two years, and so something has to
23:30
something somewhere there's confirmation that I can do this right because you're right in that.
23:37
And sometimes it's like because it's women's football and size developed you you come
23:41
in you're like, am I built for this? Am I you know,
23:44
am I athletic enough for this? Those those thoughts do come through for sure.
23:48
And then when you you're like that, what's that proving moment? I
23:52
think being seeing my teammates who are incredible and even being somewhere near that realm
24:00
of good, like I can keep up with them or those dbs in practice,
24:03
I'm like, oh, I'm kind of keeping up with these. Like
24:06
number seven on the slam, I was keeping up with her, and I'm
24:07
like, maybe you know I can do this. And then I think,
24:11
just a play this year. It was a first play of the game.
24:15
Is that the video you're sitting, Yeah, I think so. It was
24:19
forty five hour pass from our quarterback Aaron Kelly. First play of the game.
24:22
I just had to go route and it was double covered and I just
24:26
I slipped my one hand in there, hoping around the dB and I caught
24:32
it and I turned and I ran it in the end. So I was
24:33
like, did I just do that? Like it was kind of like an
24:37
instinctual thing, and it's just it's just something that you know, I have
24:41
such a passion for sports and football and then being able to play at this
24:45
level, it's it's a blessing seriously. You know we'll get back to Let's

25:57
and Kayla Ross, a professional football play from the Minnesota Vixen. You spoke
26:02
about the love of the game, you know, just just the just the
26:06
passion for it, and and it got you into playing as a kid.
26:12
Yeah, and now here you are as an adult. Yeah, I mean
26:18
in golf in it, right, and it is being at this pro level
26:23
again, being that that highest level you can play, which all the divisions
26:26
are great, and learning it every The goal is to get to Division one,
26:30
right, right, because there's only I think there's fourteen teams in this
26:33
division, so it's the pretty most competitive fourteen teams you can be on in
26:38
the States. And it's a huge it's a huge commitment. Right, So,
26:42
like all of us, none of us are getting paid, right,
26:45
we actually have to pay one thousand. Some teams pay over one thousand dollars
26:49
per player, plus our equipment. My pads were eight hundred dollars, my
26:52
helmet was four hundred dollars. When we fly into away games, we got
26:55
to pay for that. We got to pay for our lodging where we're staying
26:56
at the hotel, I mean there's so much money energy practicing three to four
27:03
days a week, and that's you know, we got full time jobs,
27:07
Like I'm going to teaching at school and then I change quick through my braid
27:11
and going football, right, Like it's a it's a huge commitment. And
27:15
people who who don't love it and aren't doing it, Yeah, yeah,
27:21
yeah, that makes perfectly good sense because like that's tough. I mean,
27:26
that's you. You're doing something because you because you love it, right and
27:32
and and no one's no one's really rewarding you for it, and and and
27:36
my question, my question is is why why not? Why? Why is
27:41
this Why? Why is this particular football league not being recognized? Why is
27:51
it not? Why? And and and I'll i'll I'll make an assumption,
27:56
and then I'll hear what you got to say. I think, I think
27:59
because people just see it as a as a as a man's that's that's the
28:03
man's game, that's where that's where men show their their real toughness in in
28:10
football. And there can't be a place for a female to be in it
28:17
and doing it like us. So we don't, we don't, we don't
28:22
want to pay attention to it. And see, and I'm like thinking,
28:25
like when you when you first told me that, I was like, oh,
28:30
I gotta get you on. I don't know how well we got to
28:33
make it work because I was like, because I feel I have a whole
28:37
new respect for women's sports now, and it's unfortunately it's late, you know,
28:44
but the w n B A that that's just a and and again the
28:49
physicality of it, I can see it and I can appreciate it, you
28:53
know, strategy, the technical like all of that. And so now here
29:00
I'm on that high and all of a sudden, you're telling me, oh,
29:06
I'm playing professional football, right, and I'm like, what we gotta
29:10
have We gotta have this conversation. Yeah, And so I and I think
29:14
and for me, like, I feel like the public has to be more
29:19
aware of it so that you you ladies are able to get paid and because
29:27
there's there's no way, there's no way. And the number of teams shows
29:33
interest, so you can't deny that there's not interest, right, sixty plus
29:36
teams, Yeah, in just this WFA league that we're in, right,
29:38
there's other leagues out there too, see, Yeah, so it's clear.
29:42
I think I just think that we we no one's no one has seen it,
29:47
no one has said anything about it. There's no there's no national television
29:51
piece tool so there is. So that's the thing I, like I said
29:53
in the beginning, over the past five years, there's been a growth more
29:56
growth in it. It's actually like our championship which we're just starting playoffs this
30:02
surfirst practice today, we got a bye week and then we play our first
30:06
round of playoffs. So the championship game is always in Canton, Ohio,
30:11
and it is on ESPN two, which we just got that like two years
30:15
ago or something that that game is on ESPN two Women's Sports Sports Network is
30:21
showing it. And then there's some local channels, but really like those which
30:26
are great and like social media and things like that, but we need more
30:32
things like this right where you're like, I want to have you on this
30:36
podcast, right, because that's that's I think the best way to spread awareness
30:41
about it and just having different platforms and channels. Going back to your point
30:48
about you know, people saying, well, it's a men's sport and women,
30:52
you know, can they really be playing and it's really physical? My
30:56
point to that would be, come watch a game. I actually so I
31:02
love Dave's Hot Chicken. Dave's Hot Chicken, you should sponsor me. I
31:06
go to Dave's Hot Chicken a lot, and there's this there's this guy there.
31:10
His name is Chuck. And I was just eating there one day and
31:12
I come back, Oh, hey, there's Chuck. He's always so nice
31:15
to me. And he sees me wearing this shirt one day and he's,
31:18
oh, Vixen, what's that. I said, you know, professional women's
31:21
football team. He's like, no, way, yeah, we got there
31:22
right here. No, and he's like, you know, I'm a coach.
31:26
He's he's well established in the sport of football. I think he played
31:30
some semi pro. He's like, you know what, I'd love to come
31:33
watch you sometime. I'm like, okay. So he comes to our one
31:36
of our games, our home games this year, and he was blown away.
31:40
He went to our owner of our team, actually our last home game,
31:42
and he's like, I was just he said. He's like, not
31:45
trying to be rude, but he's like, I wasn't expecting it to be
31:48
at that level. Like he said, the way that he was even watching
31:52
like pursuit angles right and things like that, Like he was like, whoa
31:56
just taken aback by it because I think people do have that, like the
32:00
narrative that it's not going to be competitive or it's not going to just because
32:02
it's not going to be as good as the boys, and why would we
32:06
watch that? And we have the NFL things like that, and I think
32:08
I would encourage people to watch a game or to look at different teams.
32:14
I think so, So I'm trying to figure out like what in West So
32:21
in West Virginia we do obviously we do not have a team. So Ohio
32:27
does Ohio have a team? Or I know that there's a game there.
32:30
There's so many I don't think, so don't quote me on it off the
32:37
look, but we haven't played this so like we have like you know,
32:38
our our divisions, just like you know FC North and stuff like that.
32:43
So it's kind of like that. So we play like the Saint Louis Slam
32:45
a lot, We play Nebraska a lot. You got teams like right now,
32:50
I would say the top. So the Vixen are number five. We
32:52
were number two last last week, so we dropped out a five right now.
32:58
But Saint Louis Slam is number one. Okay, Boston has been just
33:02
a powerhouse. They've won the championship like through three some three or four or
33:07
five years in a row. Now Boston's doing incredible. I do believe,
33:10
and I don't want to misquote this, but I do believe the Patriots have
33:15
some funding with that Boston women's team. I know they tweet about them,
33:21
like the Patriots team will tweet about them when Boston's gonna go play. So
33:23
they have some partnership there, which which I would love if the Vikings were
33:28
somebody to do that for the Vixen. But they're successful, Pittsburgh Passion.
33:32
Pittsburgh's like one of the top three teams right now. So I know a
33:37
lot about those teams as we play them. Is there any are some of
33:42
those more quote successful teams and the teams that specifically the teams that you named,
33:49
do they have affiliations with the with the teams in their area? See,
33:54
I don't know. I don't I don't like follow them on like you
33:59
know, Instagram to see what they what they get. I heard something about
34:01
the Patriots. I think I saw the Patriots tweeting about Boston Renegade, so
34:05
I knew that there was some sort of partnership there. I think they actually
34:08
use their facilities maybe sometimes again don't quote me on that. I had heard
34:13
that, but the Vikings this year actually let us use their training facility for
34:17
a couple of practices, which is really nice. Like we got to be
34:21
in there, you know, we're justin Jefferson's reading and you know, like
34:23
so it's that's that was super helpful for us, and I wish there was
34:30
some more partnership in that because we're not trying to take a we're not trying
34:36
to take NFL fans or we're not trying to you know, knock on the
34:39
NFL or men's sport. We love that, right and we want I think
34:45
it's just yeah, I think to me, it's it's an existence alongside,
34:50
yes, yes, just just to have the ability to be beside it,
34:53
to say, the NFL, you know, and the women's professional So is
34:59
it Women's Professional Football League? Yeah? Does each league have it? Yeah?
35:05
So the WFA is the Women's Ball Alliance, Yes, WFA, that's
35:09
our that's our league. But yeah, there's I think there's some other ones
35:15
out there. So like each league plays their you know, different divisions and
35:17
stuff. But the WFA is owned by I believe a woman that plays for
35:22
the Cali war So California. We've played them before too. They live there
35:27
in California. They own the league, and they've been I think doing a
35:30
really good job on trying to promote and lift up the league so that more
35:35
people are knowing about it. Our players are players able to get sponsors?
35:39
Like you know, like yes, so who are those Are those specific players
35:50
just considered the best players in the league. Is it just based on notoriety
35:55
on the team or it's kind of it's kind of the players job to get
36:00
the sponsors. Like you have to pay one thousand dollars every year to play,
36:02
right, you can pay that on the pocket. You can do that,
36:05
you can do monthly payments, or you can go get sponsors to help
36:07
pay you pay that for you. So, like you have to pay one
36:12
thousand dollars every season, every season just to play. That's not including like
36:16
anything else. And so like my first year, I had like a meditation
36:21
app company that sponsored me. They gave me some money and they were like,
36:25
hey, if you promote our business, like we'll give you some money
36:29
for it. And so you could, but I'm in charge of making those
36:31
deals on my own, right, like my my president, my coach doesn't
36:35
go and do that for me. Now there are our team does get sponsorships
36:38
as like a team thing, right, so we have like different businesses sponsor
36:45
the team as a whole. So okay, so the sponsors who sponsor the
36:51
team itself. I don't want to be controversial here, but like why wouldn't
36:59
that be something used to buy equipment so that you have that equipment every every
37:06
year, so that it saves you all as the player is necessarily having to
37:14
you know, suit up yourself, you know, get sponsors for equipment yourself.
37:19
I get that, Like, you know, at first that was kind
37:22
of my questions too, like where does you know how do we get funded?
37:25
How does this work? And I think really it's just that the money
37:30
we use from the sponsorships, we're using it for like facilities to practice and
37:35
because they're they're they're charging you yes, so we can't eat. We don't
37:39
haven't have enough money for everybody to have to get them gear right like we
37:44
don't. We don't have nearly enough funding for that. So we are in
37:47
charge of going and getting our own stuff. So the even so even at
37:52
the having the growth of the team kind of almost kind of works against you
37:59
a little bit when it comes to money needed. Yes, as a whole
38:05
for the program, Yes, there's a lot that goes into it. And
38:07
I think I didn't understand that at first two. But yeah, we there's
38:12
lots of fundraising, Like we have to do mandatory fundraising, like every year.
38:15
I'm pretty sure every girl, every person in the WFA, every team
38:19
you're you're doing fundraising. Like I just go, like work security shifts at
38:22
like a baseball game or something like you you have to do those things so
38:27
that those places give your team money so that you can have practice facilities.
38:30
Like it's a grind. It's a grind to try to get these this organization,
38:37
you know, keep keeping it going. All right, So let's go.
38:40
I want to switch gears and I want to I want to I want
38:45
to talk about like game on the field. Yeah, like stuff. Okay,
38:52
Like so what is that? What is your personality? How different is
39:00
your personality here? Yeah? And uh, the young lady that I spoke
39:06
to on the phone, yea, and the lady that's or the football player
39:10
on the field. Yeah, the difference. Ask my teammates. I think
39:14
it's I think I'm definitely uh a goofy gal. So I'd like to take
39:22
life not too serious. But it's hard because I'm like a big time like
39:25
jokester. I'm my coach probably gets so annoyed by me. But I'm also
39:30
like so competitive at the same time, So I'm like super serious like in
39:35
a lot of the moments, but I'm also just trashed. All yeah,
39:40
you know, that's try. You know, sometimes I know my place though
39:45
I'm like, Okay, I'm not like I'm not the best girl on my
39:47
team by any means or and I'm not somebody in the league that people are
39:52
oh kay La Ross is like no, But I can be competitive and I
39:58
make I think I keep people on their toes for sure. I think that
40:01
playing receiver this year, people are not expecting what I can bring. Okay,
40:07
So you said something that that kind of struck a struck a little nerve
40:14
in my stomach, in my chest maybe even like you're you're okay, and
40:21
I get it. I'm not the I was not the best corner you know
40:25
in the league when I played, and and maybe you know, there may
40:30
be some folks may not think I maybe it was the best corner you know,
40:36
on the field at one particular time. Sure. But one of the
40:43
things, one of the things that I learned growing up my dad was if
40:52
you say it, if you say it, there's a there's a there's there's
40:58
something to say who you are and what you are and true story. I
41:05
was talking to I was talking to a friend of mine at one point and
41:07
he and we were talking about football, and he said that, he said,
41:14
well, you know, Carl, you were You're okay. And I
41:20
was like, no, no, I wasn't just okay, and and and
41:24
the way that he said it, and in the in the context of the
41:27
conversation, it was like I felt like he took he was taking something from
41:31
me. And I'm like, I'm like and and and I don't. I
41:37
try my best not to be arrogant. I try my best not to be
41:39
you know. I don't really talk about my career, but I would never
41:45
I would never downplay how good I was, because I do know how good
41:52
I was, not because of the accolades, but the fact that I got
41:57
there. There's a whole lot of people who can't get there. You if
42:00
you're not there, then you have no judgment. People who say this stuff
42:06
on Facebook and all this kind of stuff, and you didn't play. I
42:08
get it that you're a fan. And when you say, oh gosh,
42:13
this guy is so terrible, how's he terrible? He's playing the league,
42:19
he's in the league, and and you know his name enough to talk bad
42:22
about him or try to make the case he's not very good compared to what
42:29
compared to Randy Mass as a receiver. There's a whole lot of people who
42:34
say, well, I'm not Randy Mass, But that doesn't mean, you
42:37
know, I don't know if if I was a Daryl Green, okay from
42:43
the Redskins, you know, hall of Famer, I'm not in the Hall
42:45
of Fame, will not go in the Hall of Fame. And I'm comfortable
42:49
saying that and knowing it. But but there's no way to play professional a
42:58
professional sport and not be good or even even great. And you can't.
43:04
And and to be honest, if you're playing, you're in a very small
43:08
window of people. That's why I say, I feel blessed. But yeah,
43:15
but but you're but there can't be a time where you actually make the
43:20
case that you know, I'm okay, no, no, The people who
43:23
are not playing are okay, you're actually playing. And I saw you catch
43:30
a touchdown a bomb, okay, So that tells me that this is somebody
43:36
who is really good. And and and and I and I interrupt you there
43:43
because I did, because I believe most folks are afraid to say or to
43:50
or to stand up for how good they are. I refuse to do that.
43:54
If you know, like I said, I know, I know where
43:58
I'm at. I know how good of a professional athlete I was. I
44:02
know how good of a professional athlete that I was for the Minnesota Vikings.
44:07
If you vote me in as the fifty greatest, I'm not mad, and
44:12
I'm the corner. I'm the corner that you put on there. Then I
44:15
know that in this in this D one professional league, I see you catch
44:22
a touchdown, you're not just okay, you know you and you and you
44:28
can't say that and and and to me, I think when you when you
44:34
when you stop thinking that way and start thinking upwards, I think that changes
44:39
the dynamics of who and what you want to be. Yeah, and I
44:44
think you know, so I challenge you to not to say when you think
44:52
about yourself, you have to think and specifically we're talking sports, specifically,
44:58
when you start talking about your football judge fairly, and I feel like that's
45:04
my thing, is like I'm my biggest critic. I'm my biggest critic.
45:09
I am always like and especially paying. But that's the thing too, is
45:14
I'm also my biggest fan. You should see me out there. I practice,
45:16
I'll be like flexing on them and all the but then as soon as
45:20
I mess up, I'm like, bench me, take me out. I
45:22
mean, I have. It's so back and forth. I think it's so
45:28
I try to keep myself in the middle and say, like, you know,
45:30
I'm not the best player on my team, and I play with amazing
45:34
female athletes that I and it's hard to say to you're best person on the
45:37
team and I haven't seen you yet, you know, But you're on your
45:44
your starter, You're a starter yeah for the most part. Yes, and
45:49
you're making plays. Yeah. And it doesn't it doesn't matter who's the best,
45:52
right, It doesn't even matter to me. No, it doesn't really
45:55
matter who's the best. But it's what you think. To me, I
45:59
think to what you think about who you are, because if I'm on that,
46:04
if I'm on the if I'm on the football field. I can't care
46:07
what receiver's coming out that I'm getting ready to come. Yep, if it's
46:12
Jerry Rice, it's no different than Joe Blow, you know. If it's
46:15
Stirling Sharp, it's Joe Blow. I know that's not true, you know.
46:21
But if I if I'm like, oh my gosh, here comes Rice,
46:23
Oh what am I going to do? I don't have that. I
46:28
don't have that ability to do that because in my mind, I'm thinking,
46:34
I'm I'm built for this, you know I can. I am, I
46:37
am built for this, and I'm this is what I had dreamed all my
46:40
life. I wanted to be in the NFL on Sunday, and I know
46:45
the guys that are great that are gonna be there. I want to prove
46:50
that I can be there, I can get there, and I can be
46:52
as good as them. So it's hard for me to hear saying okay,
46:58
I'm okay, you know, and I don't. And I think that you
47:00
personally, privately, you have to you you you have to. You have
47:07
to go after greatness absolutely, you know, and you have to and you
47:10
have to you have to think, Okay, am I my step away?
47:14
Am I five steps away? Or where where am I in that? Because
47:19
if you're if you're just a step away, you're gonna work harder, you
47:25
know what I'm saying, Because you because you can see it. And then
47:28
so and so, which brings me to this question. Can you can you
47:32
see yourself great? Can you can you like you? Okay? Yes?
47:37
And what what what would you? What do you think that you are lacking?
47:44
Not necessarily skilled, but work ethic, work out you know what?
47:49
What what? What do you feel is the is the thing that gets you
47:52
to the next level. It's got to be the training. It's got to
47:53
the amount of time that I spend outside of practice, outside of the season
47:58
working because that's something that that's the time we get better. And life is
48:04
so because I say, you know, we have our full time jobs things
48:08
like that, but you know what, if you wanted to, you would
48:13
And that's how I feel about myself. You know, if I really want
48:15
to be great, then I got to do the things. And that's the
48:19
thing is like I learn more about play and wide receiver and I'm like,
48:22
oh, I want to do that. I see a video, I'll learn
48:24
that. So then I got to go do it and I know I can
48:28
do it. I know, I know how athletic I am, and I
48:32
know what I can do, and if I would take that next step,
48:37
I can be up there with the grades I and have you have you just
48:43
not made that step or just haven't had time or feels like us, I
48:49
mean essentially, and it get me justified. I mean, that's that's justified.
48:52
I mean, there's probably a ton of things you have to do around
48:54
here, and you're, like you said, you're a teacher, so you
48:57
got papers, the grain and all that kind of stuff. So there's justifiable
49:01
reasons. But if you can, if you honestly can say to yourself,
49:07
actually, if I'm this good with what I do, put in what could
49:13
I do? If I put in just a little bit more? Can I
49:17
find that a little bit more? Yeah, to add to my skill set?
49:25
Right, because like anybody can go out there, not anybody, but
49:34
lots of people go out there and run a route. It's not about just
49:37
the route though, it's like the release and then if you have like rocker
49:39
steps, or you're adding things into and you're reading the defense and there's so
49:45
many pieces to it that if I really put my time and energy into learning
49:50
these skill things, I think I think I'm good to go, Like I
49:55
really want to be that good. I really do. And I watch my
50:00
teammates who are that good, and I'm like, damn, like, oh
50:05
my god. And I see, you know, some of my teammates be
50:06
working out twice a day outside of practice. I'm like, wow, you
50:08
guys are laing. They just enjoy you know, working out and things like
50:12
that. But you can see how much time and effort people put into it,
50:15
and you can see it on the field. But see, I can
50:17
feel it. I can feel it from you that like you like you love
50:22
it, like yeah, and I want to be a coach one day.
50:25
That's like my goal is to be a coach for for the Vixen. But
50:30
but I'd like to you know, get all American Verse and like you know,
50:35
win the championship and all that, because yeah, I can. I
50:37
can. I can feel that. I can feel that energy off of you.
50:40
I can feel that excitement about it. And even just when we were
50:44
talking about trying to get it set up, like you were like you know,
50:46
you were you you were excited about having the opportunity. But see that
50:52
comes well, you know, and and you you have that opportunity to to
51:00
step into a space of greatness. But it does take it does take those
51:08
extra that extra time to work out, and the loan can only get you
51:15
so far, only so far, and so height wise, as a receiver,
51:22
are you one of the tallest. I'm on like what five eight,
51:25
five nine, I'm not that tall. That's pretty tall still for probably,
51:30
Yeah, I think I'm pretty lanky. You can tell in difference with even
51:36
with receivers on my team and other teams. Yeah, I'm pretty lanky.
51:37
I think my wingspan is like ridiculous. It's but I would say, like
51:44
I'm not built, like muscular, very muscular, right, So I think
51:49
sometimes people see me and like I got her because it's like even with blocking,
51:53
I keep up with the blocking too. Actually that's one of my favorite
51:55
parts of being wide receiver. Now can you welcome? Can you cut?
52:00
Like? Can you do the cup of No? No, it's illegal.
52:04
But my speed, I think is a really big asset for me. You
52:10
said you ran track in your bio. You said you ran track, but
52:14
you had that No, I didn't retract, No, no, no,
52:16
you're thinking of my coach O Connor did like d one and I don't even
52:22
know, but I did basketball. I think that's where the wingspan thing comes
52:25
in with the blocking I do. I play really basketball lesque when I'm out
52:30
there. Actually, even my footwork and my releases in my routes, you
52:35
can see it. I've always thought that basketball I played basketball was horrible.
52:40
I was I was like, was that horrible? But our team was great.
52:45
We ended up like we lost one game in our season and we ended
52:49
up losing the playoffs my senior year. But I was the guy who was
52:52
coming the other player. And to me, basketball is the number one sport
52:59
that can help you naturally with footwork. Yeah, a lot of people try
53:02
to work on footwork outside of it, but man, playing basketball is truly
53:08
where you become naturally gifted in footwork if you can master it. Yes,
53:15
and you can tell, like people on my team who played basketball, and
53:19
some of them at like D one levels. I mean, we have really
53:22
good collegiate athletes on our team. You can tell that they play basketball the
53:25
way that they move, the way we step even. Yeah, you know
53:29
we have one of our DB's Sam Barber, played basketball. Our quarterback Aaron
53:35
Kelly played basketball. The one you can tell. It's just the footwork piece
53:38
and how we move our bodies. And it's actually, like I said,
53:42
it's it's helpful to this sport because they kind of cross over a little bit
53:47
when it comes to that. Hmm. Well, one of one of the
53:52
things that I can't wait for it And I don't know how much what time
53:58
we got, No, I got practice soon. Yeah, I know.
54:00
I can't wait because I want to go to I'm going to go to the
54:02
practice, yeah, and I want to. I want to kind of see
54:08
I want to see what you look like out on the court. And you're
54:14
all to judge me stretch, I'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna first
54:21
of all, like I said, like I don't have any reason to judge
54:24
you, but I want to just like I want to see women playing football.
54:30
No, I'm going to today. It's gonna be good. I think
54:34
you'll be surprised. I think you're going to be taken away by like the
54:37
amount of passion, the discipline that our team has, the togetherness, the
54:43
family, and and then the concepts specifically on offense. I mean, if
54:47
you're following my group around, you're going to see like offense defense usually splits
54:51
up in practice just the schemes and the everything that goes into it. I
54:55
think you're going to be like, wow, this is like this is actually
55:02
fairly what's that word? I'm looking like intens or well coordinated. I think
55:10
I think you'll be surprised. I'm hoping to be truthful, like I am
55:15
hoping to be surprised. I want and maybe I'm already I don't even know.
55:22
Maybe if I if I'm not going to be surprised, I'm already thinking
55:25
like I'm going to enjoy it, you know. And again, like I'll
55:30
be honest, I don't really watch a lot of football anymore, like you
55:32
know, it just it's just different, and so you know, so I
55:36
don't really I don't. Yeah, the game is different, and you know,
55:39
and nothing taken away from the skill set or talent from the guys that
55:43
that playing in the NFL NBA. I don't watch any of the NBA.
55:47
But but you know, again, my interest has been into the w n
55:52
B A and so now well players are just starting, so you're actually entering
55:59
it a great time because and you all played when's your first game? So
56:02
we're not this weekend, but the next I think it's twenty ninth we played
56:07
Denver, so Denver flies here, we play them at home, and if
56:10
we win there, we go to the second round. Whoever wins that go
56:13
is a championship, and the championship is it'll be where Canton, Ohio.
56:19
They want you. My owner already said she wants you to come. That's
56:22
close to me. Okay, so that's not far from me. She said,
56:24
she wants to give you a whole vip all that stuff. Yeah,
56:29
that's gonna be hard to pass up. I knew we coul Yeah, I
56:32
knew. Yeah for sure. If I can, I can make sure that
56:38
you shoot me a text and let me know that day because I don't want
56:43
to forget it and I want to make sure I blocked that out, So
56:45
put on the calendar. Yeah, so I can put it on the calendar.
56:47
Hopefully we're going to be playing in it. That's ideal. That would
56:51
be. I don't know if i'd go if you all weren't playing. Yeah,
56:58
because I mean it's got a personal now, like like like I want
57:01
to I have to see you play at some point, so you know that's
57:06
you know, so somewhere I'm going to see you playing in the game.
57:10
I'll get a chance to see you in practice today, but live stream.
57:14
They got a live stream, so like that's that's the thing is, like
57:16
it's not always like on like you're saying, like the networks we have it's
57:20
called town Square TV. They're the ones that film our team, but every
57:23
other team has a different than they do, like Facebook lives or something like
57:25
that. So it's not really like wow, I want to come, Like
57:30
I want to come, I want to come and be at the game.
57:35
This year, Oh, we had like eight hundred fans. I was like,
57:38
which is a lot for us. Yeah, we had eight hundred fans
57:40
at our last home game. And you and you guys play where now you
57:44
were? It changes different times every year, so like this year we've been
57:49
playing any Dinah. Dinah is like the high school field, but like for
57:52
playoffs now we had to like they're not we don't have they don't have room
57:55
for us, so we have to find quickly find a new stadium to play
57:59
at. So like I think we're playing and like Saint Paul now in two
58:01
weeks at that at a high school field there. So like our president does
58:06
a lot of coordination of like where we're going to be practicing and playing and
58:08
it changes and and I just don't understand, like why it's not like like
58:15
why it's not either like somewhere biking affiliated, University of M affiliated. I
58:22
don't understand, like why that's not happening. Well, you think because I
58:25
think it would. I think it would excite other young ladies, oh to
58:30
be interested in it. For sure. We have a lot of young girl
58:32
fans that like and and you look at w NBA, like the links are
58:37
at the Timberwolves, like the target, right, you look at the p
58:39
WHL, which I don't know if you knew about. The professional women Hockey
58:44
just came to be about this year. The Minnesota team one and all,
58:46
they took the cup and they play at the Excel or the wild Play.
58:50
So then it would only make sense that the Vixen would play with the Vikings,
58:53
right, But that for some reason, and I don't know all the
58:55
backstory on that. I'm sure they've tried, but I don't know why that
58:59
is in the thing. Well all right, well, ladies and gentlemen,
59:07
I just wanna I just want everybody to understand that, and hopefully we can
59:15
find a place to watch these games, support these ladies and for sure when
59:23
I get back. When I when I get back with my co host,
59:27
Hollis Lewis, I'm gonna let him know that there was a quarterback. There
59:30
was a lady quarterback, probably better than he was when I coached them at
59:36
West Virginia State. We'll be back with you as soon as we can get
59:39
soon as I can get home, and I'll talk to you later. Carl,
