- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Mahalia Artis.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Holyrood is making progress in fixing its water supply after
- 0:09Speaker 1: a rough weekend in which about half the town, primarily
- 0:12Speaker 1: the south side, had limited or no supply for over
- 0:15Speaker 1: 24 hours. The town's popular beach party Saturday night was
- 0:19Speaker 1: cancelled as a result and some businesses had to close.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Now the town centre did have water but very low pressure.
- 0:27Speaker 2: So fortunately for Station Diner, they were able to stay open.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Our convenience stores stayed open. Unfortunately, businesses like Subway, Mary Brown, Wong,
- 0:39Speaker 2: Tim Horton, they did unfortunately.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Have to close.
- 0:42Speaker 1: The problems began weeks ago, but the town has found
- 0:45Speaker 1: six leaks in the various sections of the lines and
- 0:47Speaker 1: is in the process of repairing them. But early Friday afternoon,
- 0:51Speaker 1: the pump, which is on Liam Hickey Drive, gave way.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Squires Drilling has provided a temporary fix, which was brought
- 0:57Speaker 1: online early Saturday night. A new pump is on its
- 1:00Speaker 1: way from New Brunswick, but it won't be installed immediately.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Restrictions imposed a couple of weeks ago on non-essential consumption,
- 1:06Speaker 1: such as washing cars, remain in effect.
- 1:08Speaker 2: We are pressurizing our tank again with pumps going. That
- 1:12Speaker 2: new pump will have to be brought in, but as
- 1:15Speaker 2: long as the temporary one is working, we're going to
- 1:17Speaker 2: leave that in the ground. So try to keep minimal disruption.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But residents still should expect some interruptions, some pressure changes,
- 1:27Speaker 2: discoloration near the lawn, things like that. We still have
- 1:31Speaker 2: a long way to go. We know that.
- 1:33Speaker 1: The pool at the Paul Reynolds Community Centre in St.
- 1:36Speaker 1: John's will be closed for scheduled maintenance starting today. The
- 1:39Speaker 1: closure will be in effect until and including Saturday, September 19th.
- 1:44Speaker 1: The rest of the community centre will remain open to
- 1:46Speaker 1: the public. A family of a young boy who passed
- 1:49Speaker 1: away nearly two years ago is asking people to share
- 1:52Speaker 1: acts of kindness in his memory. 11-year-old Jake Anstey passed
- 1:56Speaker 1: away on November 2nd, 2024 after suffering a cardiac arrest
- 2:00Speaker 1: earlier in the year. To honor Jake's memory, his family
- 2:03Speaker 1: has started something they're calling Jake's Force Day, a tribute
- 2:06Speaker 1: to his love of Star Wars. They are asking people
- 2:09Speaker 1: to go to their website and record an act of
- 2:11Speaker 1: kindness they have done. As Jake's mom, Lisa Hodder, explains,
- 2:14Speaker 1: they want to record 1,111 acts of kindness through the
- 2:18Speaker 1: website by November 2nd. Over 200 submissions have been received
- 2:23Speaker 1: so far. Hodder says the grief her family feels can
- 2:26Speaker 1: be overwhelming, but when people say Jake's name, tell his story,
- 2:29Speaker 1: or do an act of kindness in his name, it
- 2:31Speaker 1: brings them comfort.
- 2:32Speaker 3: I think Jake is absolutely smiling and laughing at some
- 2:36Speaker 3: of the things that are coming in. I truly believe
- 2:41Speaker 3: that he can see or feel what's happening in some way.
- 2:45Speaker 1: People who build and renovate home and property say the
- 2:48Speaker 1: new terrace will have a significant impact on all aspects
- 2:51Speaker 1: of their industry. Canada will be targeting a long list
- 2:54Speaker 1: of items which it imports from the U.S., many of
- 2:57Speaker 1: which go into construction. Kelly Rogers, the executive officer with
- 3:01Speaker 1: the Newfoundland and Labrador Home Builders Association, says costs will
- 3:04Speaker 1: go up and there will be delays in both renovation
- 3:07Speaker 1: projects and new home construction. The industry already copes with
- 3:10Speaker 1: shortages in the skilled trades.
- 3:12Speaker 4: We also have regulations that impact the affordability piece of housing.
- 3:18Speaker 4: And we need to build more homes. We are in
- 3:21Speaker 4: a housing crisis. and this will only make things worse.
- 3:26Speaker 5: And it's so fluid right now and unpredictable for sure.
- 3:33Speaker 5: And we hear the word uncertainty all the time, and
- 3:37Speaker 5: that is definitely a huge challenge that we're faced with.
- 3:42Speaker 1: First Light has converted its former medical hostel into an
- 3:45Speaker 1: immersive overnight experience unlike any hotel in the city. The
- 3:49Speaker 1: Lunar Inn offers four rooms featuring indigenous stories, cultural experiences,
- 3:53Speaker 1: and art. The Urban Indigenous Organization says when guests stay
- 3:57Speaker 1: with them, they won't just be booking a room, they
- 3:59Speaker 1: will be gaining understanding and respectful engagement with Indigenous cultures.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Proceeds from bookings will be used to support Indigenous-led programs,
- 4:07Speaker 1: cultural revitalization, and public education on truth and reconciliation. I'm
- 4:12Speaker 1: Mahalia Artis.
