- 0:00Speaker 1: Walk on board. It's the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We
- 0:03Speaker 1: get together with Jim Mora each and every week we
- 0:05Speaker 1: recap what happened on the weekend. We look ahead to
- 0:09Speaker 1: the upcoming tilt with FAU. Florida Atlantic University's Owls will
- 0:14Speaker 1: be hosting the Huskies this Saturday, three point thirty kick
- 0:18Speaker 1: down in Boca Ratone. Coach, another good win for the Huskies.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Eight and three. Now you've won nineteen of your last
- 0:26Speaker 1: twenty six and we don't look back much on this show,
- 0:29Speaker 1: but got to say the Yukon Nation, Husky Nation, is
- 0:34Speaker 1: starting to really pay attention to what's going on on
- 0:37Speaker 1: the football and on the gridiron side of things for
- 0:40Speaker 1: Yukon with the kind of success you're having. And first
- 0:44Speaker 1: of all, congrats on that. And we're going to talk
- 0:46Speaker 1: about this air Force game, because even though I was
- 0:49Speaker 1: en route to Boston to do the basketball game, I
- 0:52Speaker 1: was listening the whole way. And let's go to the
- 0:54Speaker 1: first half. First, it sounded like air Force was commanding
- 0:58Speaker 1: the game. I was starting to worry.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Well, I understand that worry. I was a little worried too,
- 1:09Speaker 2: But you know, they run the style of offense where
- 1:11Speaker 2: they just play keep away. You know, they came out,
- 1:16Speaker 2: we got them three and out. We went down and scored,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and we struggled there a little bit with getting the
- 1:19Speaker 2: extra point made, and then they just took the ball
- 1:22Speaker 2: and they just decided, Hey, we're gonna we're gonna be
- 1:24Speaker 2: who we are. We're gonna take our time, we're gonna
- 1:26Speaker 2: have multiple shifts in motions, we're gonna get ourselves in
- 1:29Speaker 2: the best play, and we're gonna just try to grind
- 1:30Speaker 2: this thing out. And they did, and they went down
- 1:32Speaker 2: the field, took a ton of time off the clock,
- 1:34Speaker 2: and scored, went up seven to six. Put a couple
- 1:38Speaker 2: other drives together, but our guys were able to rise
- 1:40Speaker 2: up on fourth down and get stops, and those are
- 1:44Speaker 2: just key stops for us. And when you're playing offense
- 1:46Speaker 2: like that, you're gonna have to hang in there a
- 1:48Speaker 2: little bit and play a little rope adope at times,
- 1:50Speaker 2: you know, and and then you're you know, set yourself
- 1:54Speaker 2: up to the land and knockout blow, which we were
- 1:56Speaker 2: able to do. But I was just really proud of
- 1:58Speaker 2: our team and first half, our defense for hanging in
- 2:02Speaker 2: there the way they did and getting the stops when
- 2:04Speaker 2: we needed to and then I thought, you know, our
- 2:07Speaker 2: offense going down there at the end of the first
- 2:10Speaker 2: half and getting us a nine to seven lead was huge.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We went into the locker room knowing that we were
- 2:14Speaker 2: going to get the ball to start the second half
- 2:16Speaker 2: and we needed to establish, you know, that we could
- 2:19Speaker 2: run the football, and we came out and broke a
- 2:22Speaker 2: good one on the first play the second half with Cam,
- 2:25Speaker 2: And as you know, Cam had a great second half,
- 2:27Speaker 2: which means our offensive line and our receivers and our
- 2:29Speaker 2: tight ends blocking had an outstanding second half and we
- 2:32Speaker 2: were able to get it done. But it was little
- 2:34Speaker 2: hairy at the start.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Yeah, that's for sure. And when games end up being
- 2:39Speaker 1: you know, a ten point differential and you look back
- 2:42Speaker 1: and just say, well you can handle them. But at
- 2:45Speaker 1: a given point in a game, sometimes one play can
- 2:49Speaker 1: be a turning point, is my thought. Because on that
- 2:54Speaker 1: fourth down play for air Force, they had two yards
- 2:56Speaker 1: to get, Yukon's d comes up big, their quarterback gets hurt.
- 3:02Speaker 1: All of a sudden, the picture just totally changed, I thought,
- 3:06Speaker 1: because I mean air Force goes in and scores there,
- 3:08Speaker 1: they're up a score and and they're still in command
- 3:11Speaker 1: and they're they're getting towards the end of the first half,
- 3:14Speaker 1: so that one stop, to me, might have been one
- 3:17Speaker 1: of the biggest plays we've seen all season.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It was a big play for sure, Mike. You know,
- 3:21Speaker 2: the ebb and flow of a game, the momentum swings,
- 3:24Speaker 2: the ups and the downs are really remarkable. You know,
- 3:28Speaker 2: what it demands of me is that I try to
- 3:29Speaker 2: stay a series or two ahead. Am I thinking? You know,
- 3:32Speaker 2: what does a field goal versus a touchdown mean at
- 3:35Speaker 2: this point? And what does it mean a drive down?
- 3:38Speaker 2: A drive down the game? Two drives down the game,
- 3:42Speaker 2: which I love the strategical part of it, but I just,
- 3:45Speaker 2: like I said, you know, our defense being able to
- 3:47Speaker 2: make those stops and in particular that stop, and then
- 3:50Speaker 2: certainly you never want to see an opponent get injured,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know. I mean, you know, suffer a little pain,
- 3:57Speaker 2: that's part of the game, but you know, getting injured,
- 4:00Speaker 2: that's not what we're looking for. But you know, you
- 4:02Speaker 2: can't deny that him not being on the field in
- 4:05Speaker 2: the second half didn't help us. It did help us.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Air force on that drive. By the way, Coach, nineteen plays,
- 4:13Speaker 1: I mean, how many times you see a nineteen play
- 4:16Speaker 1: drive they went ninety yards. They had the ball for
- 4:19Speaker 1: almost twelve minutes. And we talk about time of possession sometimes,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but in this game, you have to talk about it.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Air Force had the ball the entire first half, it
- 4:28Speaker 1: felt like, yet they don't get in the end zone.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yukon comes back, gets a field goal and gets in
- 4:33Speaker 1: that locker room with the lead. How important was that?
- 4:36Speaker 1: Do you think? Huge?
- 4:37Speaker 2: Especially because we had the ball to start the second half.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You know, our original thought was we were going to
- 4:43Speaker 2: take the ball to start the game to keep it
- 4:46Speaker 2: out of their hands so that you know, we didn't
- 4:48Speaker 2: sit there and get cold on the bench. But we
- 4:51Speaker 2: ended up kicking off and fortunately got the three and
- 4:53Speaker 2: out and was able to go get the points. And
- 4:55Speaker 2: then once that happened, like my mindset shifted to okay,
- 5:00Speaker 2: worked out, well, we get to start the second half
- 5:02Speaker 2: with the ball. Let's see if we can double them up,
- 5:05Speaker 2: which means can we find a way to get the
- 5:06Speaker 2: ball to end the first half and start the second half.
- 5:09Speaker 2: And now they got the ball with I think thirty
- 5:11Speaker 2: four seconds left at the end of the first half
- 5:13Speaker 2: of condenting with it, so we were able to capitalize
- 5:16Speaker 2: with points on two consecutive drives, one at the end
- 5:19Speaker 2: of the first half and when to start the second half,
- 5:21Speaker 2: and so those are important moments in the game.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we talked about special teams. Chris Freeman with a
- 5:27Speaker 1: forty seven yard or that's not a ship shot, okay,
- 5:31Speaker 1: twenty eight seconds left and the half that's a big
- 5:33Speaker 1: field goal. And when you're getting kicks like that, boy,
- 5:36Speaker 1: that really provides a lift, doesn't it.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah. Chris is a good one. You know, he's very dependable,
- 5:44Speaker 2: he works hard at it, as players respect him. You know,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I just think he's a great person. I'm really happy
- 5:49Speaker 2: to see him have the success on an individual basis
- 5:52Speaker 2: and that leads to our team success and that's what
- 5:54Speaker 2: it's all about. So really great to have a guy
- 5:57Speaker 2: that you know you can put out there and you
- 5:59Speaker 2: have a high degree of confidence that he's going to
- 6:01Speaker 2: make the kick for you. And you know, it's not
- 6:04Speaker 2: just Chris, but it's the operation between the snapper, the
- 6:07Speaker 2: holder and the kicker and then the protection up front
- 6:09Speaker 2: and you know, knock on wood and we'll keep doing
- 6:13Speaker 2: it well. And it's been something that we work hard
- 6:15Speaker 2: at and we'll continue to work hard at.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yep. Chris Freeman's got a game winner at Buffalo and
- 6:20Speaker 1: he had a big kick against Air Force on Saturday.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Back with more, we're going to talk defense, then offense,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and we talked to yukon football with Jim Moore here
- 6:28Speaker 1: on Learfield.
