- 0:06Speaker 1: you don't know, now you know, check.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yo, Bootlet cap Show, Bootlet Cab Podcast. Man special guests
- 0:15Speaker 2: in here a legend, Warren G. Man's good to see you, man. Yeah,
- 0:21Speaker 2: I feel like we've been talking about doing this for
- 0:22Speaker 2: a very long time. Yeah, Yeah, it's good to have
- 0:25Speaker 2: you here, man. Man, thanks for having me.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Yo.
- 0:28Speaker 2: You got this new song with Zoh shout Out Too,
- 0:29Speaker 2: who I think is kind of like one of the
- 0:31Speaker 2: leaders of like LA period but of course the new
- 0:34Speaker 2: generation of LA.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yes, how did you guys end up linking up?
- 0:40Speaker 1: I mean I had I liked his music, of course,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and you know, I was like, I want to do something.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I want to do a record with him. So I
- 0:50Speaker 1: tapped in with Cammy and uh, Cammy reached out to him.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We exchanged numbers. I hit him and said let's work
- 0:59Speaker 1: and he was like, let's do Yeah, came up to
- 1:01Speaker 1: the studio and we just immediately started recording.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, and then like for like, I've been in the
- 1:07Speaker 2: studio with O. He's pretty quick with the way he is,
- 1:10Speaker 2: the way he kind of I feel like the newer
- 1:13Speaker 2: generation of artists for some reason, they're just because I'll
- 1:16Speaker 2: be like, we have recording studios here, and I just
- 1:19Speaker 2: noticed like the younger guys like there, they like they'll
- 1:21Speaker 2: put the ideas out and then work on like refining
- 1:24Speaker 2: it later.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, that's exactly what happened with the song, right.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Because I'm assuming you're you got the you're writing everything down, Oh.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Yes, and yes, indeed, yeah, I mean it don't take
- 1:37Speaker 1: me that long, you know what I'm saying. I'm used
- 1:39Speaker 1: to I'm used to moving like like how how you
- 1:42Speaker 1: know a lot of the younger artists move. Actually we
- 1:45Speaker 1: was well, Tupac was super moving like that that he
- 1:48Speaker 1: would write a song like thirty minutes.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Like yeah, I think that's that's why we got so much. Yeah,
- 1:54Speaker 2: remember all the bootleg mcaveelly's after he passed.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, moved around in the streets.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's crazy shouts of park Man.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yo.
- 2:03Speaker 2: You know what some I always wondered, man, is when
- 2:05Speaker 2: I was a kid, you were like the only it
- 2:07Speaker 2: was you and then jail felony later on, But the
- 2:09Speaker 2: only West Coast guys who were on death Jam Domino two,
- 2:15Speaker 2: Domino two Yeah, that's right, and Monte Jordan shouting yeah
- 2:20Speaker 2: Montel Jordan, did you're right?
- 2:21Speaker 1: Ship? Yes?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Indeed tell me like because at the time I'm assuming
- 2:29Speaker 2: there was an opportunity for you to be on death Road.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Well not well, Na, what it wasn't no opportunity. They wasn't.
- 2:37Speaker 2: They didn't. They never offered you anything officially.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Never offered me nothing officially. But it was I wasn't tripping.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I just moved on.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, how did death Jam thin end up happening? And
- 2:48Speaker 2: then like when, like, did Sug feel some type of
- 2:50Speaker 2: way that you didn't come to him or that you
- 2:52Speaker 2: ended up signing with with death Jam? Uh, because you
- 2:56Speaker 2: had it. You were around those guys so much.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I've known him all my life. He probably was a
- 3:04Speaker 1: little salty, you know, because he probably didn't didn't expect
- 3:08Speaker 1: me to turn out how it turned out, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 1: but I was. I was a diamond in the rough
- 3:16Speaker 1: and he just he just didn't see that, you know.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But it was all good. I moved on. But the
- 3:24Speaker 1: way I got signed with def Jam was actually still
- 3:28Speaker 1: going over to the studio with Drake, Snoop and Sug.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Everybody was there. It was working on a record for
- 3:37Speaker 1: the for a soundtrack, which was Poetic Justice. So I
- 3:40Speaker 1: met Paul Stewart and John Singleton. I met them for
- 3:44Speaker 1: the first time right there. It was in the studio,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and I asked him, I said, can I play a record?
- 3:53Speaker 1: I know you guys looking for records for the soundtrack.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Can I Can I play a song for you? So
- 3:58Speaker 1: we walked to the car. Uh popped in the cassette
- 4:02Speaker 1: and it was in those smoke and I let it
- 4:05Speaker 1: go for maybe like fifteen seconds. He uh. He was
- 4:09Speaker 1: like stop and he said can I take the tape
- 4:12Speaker 1: with me? And I was like yeah, So he took
- 4:14Speaker 1: the tape. He took the tape and a few days
- 4:19Speaker 1: later I got the call. They was like, we want
- 4:22Speaker 1: this to be the first single to the Poetic Justice soundtrack.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And I was like, are you serious? They was like yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 1: and I was like, oh shit. So that like blew
- 4:34Speaker 1: that was like my first.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that production yeah. I was like, I was like
- 4:38Speaker 2: the like not the guy was just around in the
- 4:40Speaker 2: studio sessions. Right.
- 4:41Speaker 1: That was my first introduction into you know, becoming becoming
- 4:45Speaker 1: a household name. So we did indose smoke It blew
- 4:50Speaker 1: up and went gold, sure.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Platinum, Classic, classic classic soundtrack.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And now it's beyond platinum for sure. And uh so
- 5:00Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of labels was calling Paul
- 5:02Speaker 1: and John them, you know, calling and you know, wondering,
- 5:06Speaker 1: you know who the guys was on Window Smoke. Paul
- 5:09Speaker 1: had a deeper relationship with Death Jim So because he
- 5:13Speaker 1: was working right, Yeah, so he was, uh they they
- 5:20Speaker 1: called in and you know, he more he was tight,
- 5:23Speaker 1: more tighter with them than any of the other labels.
- 5:25Speaker 1: So that's when he came over, like brought them and
- 5:28Speaker 1: we had a conversation on the phone.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Was it like Russell Simmons that you were dealing with?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Was uh uh Chris lighty Le or Cohen and Tracy Wapples.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Wow.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I linked that with Russell later, like when I came
- 5:41Speaker 1: to New York, hung out with him, him, a bunch
- 5:45Speaker 1: of the ol g's like Andre Real, all those guys,
- 5:48Speaker 1: a bunch of them guys was around. I was just like, damn,
- 5:51Speaker 1: there's the o G. So that that had happened later on,
- 5:56Speaker 1: and so we had a conversation and they was just like,
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know, we want to we want to sign the
- 6:03Speaker 1: guy on the Indoor Smoke song. We want to sign
- 6:09Speaker 1: him to death jam.
- 6:10Speaker 2: So I was like at the time, they like, do
- 6:12Speaker 2: they know like your ties, like your your family ties
- 6:15Speaker 2: with snooping the movement, They didn't even know.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But the crazy thing about it was, you know, I
- 6:22Speaker 1: was looking at it like, okay, I'm a producer. They
- 6:27Speaker 1: hidden to get mister Green because mister Grimm was dealt
- 6:31Speaker 1: for sure and uh still though, and so they was like, well,
- 6:37Speaker 1: we want the guy that did that does like the
- 6:39Speaker 1: little chance a little singing and you know, and I said, who,
- 6:44Speaker 1: like whoa hey now that They was like, yeah that guy.
- 6:47Speaker 1: So I said, ship that's me and uh uh. I
- 6:52Speaker 1: was like, oh my god. I was like, y'all want
- 6:55Speaker 1: to sign me? I was like shit, I mean I
- 6:57Speaker 1: do rap I produce all of that. So they flew out,
- 7:04Speaker 1: came out, we had dinner, had a really good conversation.
- 7:10Speaker 1: They got the paperwork to me, I got it to
- 7:13Speaker 1: the lawyer and boom, that's where it all started.
- 7:17Speaker 2: So how long? Because you know, I feel like nowadays
- 7:20Speaker 2: like artists will sign and like they'll already have like
- 7:24Speaker 2: thirty songs ready to go because they've been working independently
- 7:27Speaker 2: for you, Like, what was the process, Like, give me
- 7:30Speaker 2: the time frame? You sign and then regulate jee hunk
- 7:33Speaker 2: Era comes out.
- 7:34Speaker 1: What is the the first thing I got signed? The
- 7:38Speaker 1: first thing I did? Oh okay, okay, yeah. The first
- 7:44Speaker 1: thing that happened in the process was as far as me,
- 7:49Speaker 1: the way I was thinking was go buy your own
- 7:52Speaker 1: studio equipment. So that was my thing when you were
- 7:55Speaker 1: ahead of the curve. Bro Oh. Yeah. I went and
- 7:57Speaker 1: bought my whole studio, set it all up in the house,
- 8:03Speaker 1: and just started recording. I had other records that I uh,
- 8:10Speaker 1: it was not a that, but it was the other
- 8:12Speaker 1: little video one before that I forgot the So I
- 8:18Speaker 1: bought the whole the whole.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Studio with your advance. So yeah, so you get your
- 8:25Speaker 2: advance and then you invested in the studio equipment.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yep, instead of instead of going into the studio, I
- 8:30Speaker 1: invested in my own studio, my own equipment, got me
- 8:34Speaker 1: an apartment and put everything inside the apartment. In the
- 8:37Speaker 1: bathroom was my vocal booth.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and it was it was it was uh
- 8:44Speaker 1: and I and after that, I just went straight to
- 8:47Speaker 1: digging for samples because I'm a producer as well, So
- 8:51Speaker 1: I just started digging for music first music first, and
- 8:54Speaker 1: then you know, once I started playing all the music,
- 8:58Speaker 1: then I'll see find what idea works, you know, what
- 9:01Speaker 1: to give me the idea to write to and say,
- 9:04Speaker 1: well that's the one I want to go home and another.
- 9:09Speaker 1: You know. That's just like when I when I I
- 9:13Speaker 1: hadn't had Regulate yet, before I was signed with them,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I didn't have none of that stuff. So one day
- 9:20Speaker 1: in your apartment Regulah, Yeah, I did it right in
- 9:23Speaker 1: my apartment, right in my apartment. The cold thing about that,
- 9:27Speaker 1: the crazy thing about that is I was I went
- 9:31Speaker 1: by Roscals on my way getting ready to go home,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and bump teds with a guy selling shit right in
- 9:38Speaker 1: front of Roscos. He had which is the one right
- 9:42Speaker 1: here right on what is it, Holly the Gower, the
- 9:46Speaker 1: one on gallery right there by the Dennis. So it
- 9:52Speaker 1: was a dude selling crate records out of a crate there.
- 9:55Speaker 1: So I told the dude, let me buy the whole crate,
- 9:57Speaker 1: because he was selling the records for like a dollar
- 9:59Speaker 1: or two. So I said, let me get the whole crank.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I think I gave him like about five hundred dollars
- 10:04Speaker 1: like there you go, and took the crate home and
- 10:10Speaker 1: immediately started digging, you know. That was my weekends, like
- 10:13Speaker 1: just to dig and and find dope samples or dope.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I did, of course, And so I'm going through the
- 10:21Speaker 1: records and I came across the uh uh I keep
- 10:25Speaker 1: forgetting Michael Michael McDonald and the Doobie Brothers, and I
- 10:32Speaker 1: heard it. I was like, boom boom, boom boom. I
- 10:36Speaker 1: was like, oh my god, that shit is dope, and
- 10:39Speaker 1: it brought me back because my parents used to bang it,
- 10:42Speaker 1: you know, So that's where I heard it first. So
- 10:44Speaker 1: I was like, damn, if I do a song to this,
- 10:47Speaker 1: this ship might you know, be something something special. So
- 10:52Speaker 1: I sampled it, put it all together, and I had
- 10:57Speaker 1: to be done with every everything was done. So I
- 11:00Speaker 1: was like, damn, I need to get somebody on here
- 11:02Speaker 1: with me. So I was like, I'm gonna get at
- 11:05Speaker 1: Nate so we could do a record like how Snoop
- 11:07Speaker 1: and Dray did g thing. I said, me and Nate
- 11:09Speaker 1: gonna do one like that.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Well, yeah, because at this point in time, Nate Dog
- 11:13Speaker 2: isn't on Doggie style. No, he's not a household He's
- 11:18Speaker 2: I mean, I first first time I ever heard Nate
- 11:20Speaker 2: Dog was on Regulator.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so oh he and those smoke yeah, and those
- 11:26Speaker 1: smoke you're right, yeah, yeah, And there was a trip
- 11:30Speaker 1: because I had I told him I wanted to do
- 11:33Speaker 1: the record with him, but I had to get an intro,
- 11:37Speaker 1: which we always did, like when we was working on
- 11:39Speaker 1: the Chronic we would do like intros and.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Skits too, oh yeah the best.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So what I did was I did I was trying
- 11:47Speaker 1: to find an intro, an introduction, you know, and to
- 11:51Speaker 1: lead in to me starting the song. So that's when I,
- 11:55Speaker 1: you know, I regulate came to mind, and regulate was
- 11:58Speaker 1: like that was our word, like we need to regulate,
- 12:02Speaker 1: we need to regulate this. Let's regulate that. So I
- 12:06Speaker 1: was like, regulate, you know. So just I just watching,
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, I'm just watching my v c R tapes
- 12:15Speaker 1: one day, just sitting there chilling, and I watched Young
- 12:19Speaker 1: Guns and I'm watching it and in the Park came
- 12:23Speaker 1: in where the dude walked, Well when when Billy the
- 12:27Speaker 1: Kid first walked into the boys, Billy Billy dude.
- 12:35Speaker 2: I don't remember my parents liked that movie when I
- 12:37Speaker 2: was a kid, I don't.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I was that was man, that was my ship. Yeah.
- 12:43Speaker 1: So when he said we worked, we worked, for mister
- 12:45Speaker 1: Tinsdale as regulators, you know. And then he started talking
- 12:50Speaker 1: and some such and such and such, and then he said,
- 12:52Speaker 1: we regulated any still in this property, and we're damn
- 12:56Speaker 1: good too. So I chopped that in different pieces and
- 13:00Speaker 1: I started it out regulators, we regulated any still, the regulators.
- 13:05Speaker 1: You can't be any regularly. Yeah the street, he still was, probably,
- 13:09Speaker 1: but you can't get any geek off the street. Gotta
- 13:12Speaker 1: be handed with still. And then that was how the
- 13:18Speaker 1: whole intro started out.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Was the regular leators? Was that was that in the movie?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Yes? Indeed, okay, but they go regulators and then they
- 13:27Speaker 1: mount up. Do you like regulators?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Do you remember? This is a random just tangent on
- 13:33Speaker 2: the side. I want you to continue the story. But
- 13:35Speaker 2: do you remember the defensive lineman from the Vikings. I
- 13:38Speaker 2: remember on ESPN they had a biked up randall and
- 13:42Speaker 2: right before yeah that motherfuck yeah as soon as the
- 13:49Speaker 2: boss that ship was crazy. Anyway, continue with the story.
- 13:51Speaker 1: That was the Championship game wild Yeah, yeah.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Anyway, but the story, So, so you sample the movie,
- 13:58Speaker 2: you sample off your VCR.
- 14:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and uh so I had it all put together
- 14:03Speaker 1: and I told Nate Man, let's let's let's do a
- 14:07Speaker 1: record together, you know. And and I did. I put
- 14:12Speaker 1: that regulators on their regulator lon up. I put that
- 14:16Speaker 1: in the intro. Yeah, And so when when they came over,
- 14:21Speaker 1: I let him hear it. He was like, damn, that
- 14:23Speaker 1: shit banging. So we're sitting there nodding, and I just,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I just I said, I'm a freestyle thiss motherfucker. So
- 14:32Speaker 1: I just came in. It was a clear black night,
- 14:34Speaker 1: a clear white moon warming, and he was on the
- 14:36Speaker 1: streets trying to consume some skirts for the eve so
- 14:40Speaker 1: I could get some phone free in my rid chilling
- 14:43Speaker 1: all alone, I swear a guy that was a freestyle
- 14:45Speaker 1: wow that first verse.
- 14:47Speaker 2: And then Nate just comes in, yep.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yeah, just hit the east side of the LBC on
- 14:52Speaker 1: the mission, trying to find mister Warren g. But when
- 14:56Speaker 1: I say trying to get some phones, yeah, people really
- 15:00Speaker 1: don't know what I meant a lot of people don't
- 15:02Speaker 1: know what I meant by that. But it was headphones, okay,
- 15:05Speaker 1: like trying to get trying to get some phones, yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 1: trying to get some.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I'm glad you clarified that, because kid, I never I
- 15:14Speaker 2: didn't know if you were saying funk phones. I didn't
- 15:16Speaker 2: know what was happening.
- 15:16Speaker 1: It was phones, Yeah, trying to get some phones, because
- 15:19Speaker 1: that's what we used to call it. He getting ready
- 15:21Speaker 1: to get him some phone. I like that, okay, but
- 15:23Speaker 1: it was we called it headphones. Uh I get it now?
- 15:27Speaker 1: And yes, indeed and uh so we after that, after
- 15:32Speaker 1: he did his part, just hit the east side of
- 15:37Speaker 1: the LBC on the Mischi trying to find mister Warmer. Gee.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I just I had after that, so I went off
- 15:46Speaker 1: of what he was saying. So that then I started writing.
- 15:49Speaker 2: So I'm like a true back and forth.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Like yeah, yeah their apartment. First verse was free in apartment,
- 15:56Speaker 1: so crazy. Yeah, my engineer, Greg was sitting right there.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I had engineered. He sat right in there with me.
- 16:02Speaker 2: That's amazing. A random like, did you invoice the label
- 16:07Speaker 2: for the studio time?
- 16:08Speaker 1: I didn't even invoice. I should have shit because they
- 16:13Speaker 1: had you know, they had a studio. Yeah yeah, but
- 16:15Speaker 1: I got all the original recordings on that.
- 16:18Speaker 2: That's amazing. Hey, that that's crazy. So you guys finished
- 16:21Speaker 2: this song? Do you have any idea because this is
- 16:23Speaker 2: one of the most iconic hip hop songs of all time.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I mean, it has been said that you kind of
- 16:28Speaker 2: helped save def jam during that time. Yeah, did you
- 16:32Speaker 2: guys have an idea that like this is the single,
- 16:35Speaker 2: this song is this is the one? Or like like.
- 16:38Speaker 1: No, we didn't know. But what I used to do,
- 16:42Speaker 1: just like I did for End. I mean, yeah, indo smoke.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Every time I got around my friends or family, I
- 16:48Speaker 1: would play play record. So one day I went up
- 16:52Speaker 1: to record one with Dre and him and Mike Linn
- 16:57Speaker 1: was there. So I asked Mike. I was like, look, man,
- 17:03Speaker 1: come listen to this record. I just did I want
- 17:05Speaker 1: you to hear this shit. It's with me and Nate.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So we jumped in the car. I played it and
- 17:10Speaker 1: he heard. He was like, damn, that motherfucker banging. So
- 17:13Speaker 1: he was like, can I take the CD? Because that
- 17:16Speaker 1: I was on CDs. Then now I'm like, hey, I
- 17:19Speaker 1: then went from cassette tapes to CDs. I didn't bossed
- 17:22Speaker 1: up a little bit. So I gave him the CD
- 17:25Speaker 1: and he was like, can I let Jimmy hear this?
- 17:27Speaker 1: And I was like hell yeah, so he let Jimmy here.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Once again, I got the call, we want this to
- 17:34Speaker 1: be the first single on Above the Rim soundtrack, so
- 17:36Speaker 1: I was like, are you serious?
- 17:38Speaker 2: Another one? Yeah?
- 17:39Speaker 1: So he was like, yeah, so another Tupac movie. Yeah,
- 17:44Speaker 1: another one, another one, another one, and so they wrestling,
- 17:50Speaker 1: you know, def jammer. They did the deal, and we
- 17:53Speaker 1: got the deal done, and Regularly was the first single.
- 17:57Speaker 1: And the cold thing about it, which probably calls the
- 18:00Speaker 1: friction between Sugar and Russell and Leor, was that after
- 18:06Speaker 1: you know, I mean, which it shouldn't have been. He
- 18:09Speaker 1: shouldn't have really been tripping that hard, but he was
- 18:12Speaker 1: probably like these motherfucking slick ass motherfuckers. What we did
- 18:16Speaker 1: is we repackaged Regulator all over again and made it
- 18:20Speaker 1: seem like it was just it was my single on.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Your album because the Rim soundtrack was a death Row album.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that was a death Row album. So we took
- 18:31Speaker 1: Regulate and repackaged it and did everything all over and
- 18:34Speaker 1: released it as a grange single, right, And then that
- 18:38Speaker 1: made my album self fo a million records crazy and
- 18:42Speaker 1: I was like damn. And then I dropped this DJ
- 18:44Speaker 1: on top of it, and then.
- 18:45Speaker 2: This j was amazing. I mean, it was a classic album.
- 18:49Speaker 2: So like, because at that time, man, death Jam wasn't
- 18:52Speaker 2: a weird place, and it's kind of crazy to think
- 18:54Speaker 2: that like a kid from Long Beach. Yeah, kind of
- 18:57Speaker 2: saved the most iconic hip hop label of all time
- 19:00Speaker 2: at least, you know, helped push it through a tough time.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Like were you like aware of that at the time,
- 19:07Speaker 2: that like you were like the ship on the label,
- 19:10Speaker 2: like you were the one kind of keeping the lights
- 19:12Speaker 2: on at that moment.
- 19:13Speaker 1: At first, I wasn't, but you know, once I learned
- 19:16Speaker 1: what I did, and it was, I wasn't. But I
- 19:18Speaker 1: wasn't a cocky guy. I wasn't ever like trying to
- 19:22Speaker 1: think thinking I'm bigger than everybody that was over there,
- 19:26Speaker 1: like LLL that's my dad, was my of course I'm
- 19:28Speaker 1: a huge ll fan. I was the greatest and he Yeah,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I never would try to boss up or anything on
- 19:35Speaker 1: him like that, of course. And he showed me a
- 19:37Speaker 1: lot of love when I first got there, you know
- 19:40Speaker 1: how people were saying the East Coast West Coast beef.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Of course Ell came and scooped me up, took me
- 19:45Speaker 1: to Queens, took me shopping, showed me everything like pretty
- 19:49Speaker 1: much grooming me on how this shit go, you know,
- 19:52Speaker 1: took me to where he wrote his songs at in
- 19:54Speaker 1: the basement. I even seen the green Suzuki Samurai that
- 19:58Speaker 1: was in Teena got a big.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Old but oh that's crazy.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I was. I couldn't.
- 20:03Speaker 2: I was like, you know the fact that Suzuki Samurai
- 20:07Speaker 2: was a hot car back in the day. Yeah, that
- 20:10Speaker 2: ship is crazy to me. Yea, you see what you're like,
- 20:14Speaker 2: Damn sh it was ugly.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 2: That shit's crazy.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Man. Yo.
- 20:20Speaker 2: So you're obviously man, I feel like, uh, when when
- 20:26Speaker 2: you're coming out, what you're doing sonically is much different
- 20:31Speaker 2: than what I would say, Like the quote unquote death
- 20:35Speaker 2: Row sound was obviously you're on the chronic, like you're
- 20:37Speaker 2: part of that, you're a part of that legacy. But
- 20:39Speaker 2: the g funk sound was so different and very very
- 20:44Speaker 2: very distinct for you, Like when did you decide to
- 20:49Speaker 2: call what you were doing g funk?
- 20:52Speaker 1: Well, I was introduced pretty much, uh Laylawn from Above
- 20:59Speaker 1: Love Above the Law. They that was g funk.
- 21:04Speaker 2: So that was okay. So they were the first to
- 21:06Speaker 2: do the.
- 21:06Speaker 1: G funk Yeah okay, yes, So they took me under
- 21:11Speaker 1: their wing as a pup, didn't have no place to stay,
- 21:15Speaker 1: none of that. Took me in as a pup, and
- 21:18Speaker 1: I became part of g funk with them, and then
- 21:24Speaker 1: just I always just kept saying g funk you know, musically,
- 21:27Speaker 1: because that's what it was when when I was with
- 21:30Speaker 1: Layla and Above Above the Law in seven now and
- 21:36Speaker 1: so you know, after you know, they kind of like
- 21:40Speaker 1: it wasn't like popping no more and stuff like that.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I carried it, carried on with it, you know what
- 21:44Speaker 1: I mean, Not to say that they was like gone
- 21:47Speaker 1: or whatever, but yeah, well I said, regulate the G
- 21:53Speaker 1: funk here, which means I met that as far as
- 21:56Speaker 1: like let me bring this ship back, you know, and
- 21:59Speaker 1: and let motherfuckers know this's g funk. So but the
- 22:04Speaker 1: sound that you hear, and that's my version of g funk,
- 22:06Speaker 1: you know, it's different, uh sounds along with it. That's
- 22:11Speaker 1: but that that was the avert the genre of G
- 22:14Speaker 1: funk I created, which was chords, strings, we brings, melodies,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you know, G funk were rhythm is life and life
- 22:25Speaker 1: is rhythm and that that that was That was my
- 22:30Speaker 1: how I did. And then I took it worldwide to
- 22:32Speaker 1: where the whole world like no G funk, you know
- 22:36Speaker 1: what I mean? And you know, and and and I
- 22:40Speaker 1: created my own genre of G funk with with but
- 22:45Speaker 1: it's still a part of all of all of the
- 22:48Speaker 1: what I was raised in.
- 22:50Speaker 2: You being like a superstar at the time, I mean,
- 22:53Speaker 2: one of the hottest drivers of the planet at the
- 22:55Speaker 2: time being from l A. But somehow avoiding any like
- 23:03Speaker 2: crazy drama dur in that era when everybody was beefing
- 23:06Speaker 2: and everybody was on some bang bank shoot them up shit.
- 23:09Speaker 2: I feel like you were just like the cool dude,
- 23:11Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Cool.
- 23:12Speaker 2: How did you stay out the way like that, because
- 23:14Speaker 2: obviously you're close with everybody who's involved.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Like I mean, just you know, just just standing out
- 23:21Speaker 1: the way, just minding my own business, but you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: things was coming my way. I just, you know, wasn't
- 23:28Speaker 1: gonna sit there and just let anybody try to do
- 23:31Speaker 1: anything or come at me any kind of way. I'm
- 23:34Speaker 1: with whatever they whoever was had a problem, I'm with
- 23:37Speaker 1: it too, you know. So they and they know that.
- 23:40Speaker 1: So that's probably why a lot of it, you know,
- 23:43Speaker 1: didn't didn't. A lot of stuff didn't go down because
- 23:46Speaker 1: I'm with the ship too, you know. If that's how
- 23:48Speaker 1: I want to get down, that's.
- 23:50Speaker 2: How if the circus comes to your dor, you're there,
- 23:53Speaker 2: but you're not gonna willingly participate.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'm not gonna jump and jumping nothing, but you know,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I mean I had to deal with a lot, you know.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I had to deal with with death jam and sugar
- 24:06Speaker 1: and beef, and I had to deal with when Dre
- 24:08Speaker 1: left uh death Row and I didn't even know, you know.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I wish you would have told me, get the heads up.
- 24:16Speaker 1: And I mean I had to deal with a bunch
- 24:21Speaker 1: of bunch of stuff, you know, but I wasn't having it.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Was there was all that stuff you were dealing with,
- 24:28Speaker 2: and all that kind of was what was the reason
- 24:30Speaker 2: why it took so long for I wanted all to
- 24:33Speaker 2: come out? It was like a five year ye right.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Well, no, I wasn't that long before. That wasn't that
- 24:39Speaker 1: long because what what happened was that's when the merger
- 24:42Speaker 1: was happening, big old mergers.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Because I wanted all did I wanted all my shot
- 24:46Speaker 2: the shareff.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I shot to Share. That was my second album, Take
- 24:51Speaker 1: a Look Over your Shoulder.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I'm thinking that's what that's the album I'm thinking of. Yes,
- 24:54Speaker 2: I had, I had I had a Remember back in
- 24:57Speaker 2: the day, we used to go to the warehouse and
- 24:58Speaker 2: just buy singles because we can't afford the album.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Yes, indeed. Yeah, yeah, I worked that warehouse, I know.
- 25:04Speaker 2: So I had I had the I shot the Sheriff single. Yeah,
- 25:08Speaker 2: so that was your second out. That's right. That's right.
- 25:09Speaker 2: So for you, like take me back then, because at
- 25:12Speaker 2: the time you, uh, you're putting your music out, Snoop
- 25:18Speaker 2: is dealing with this trial. What was it like being
- 25:23Speaker 2: so close to that situation and still having to like
- 25:27Speaker 2: stay focused on your own ship with like the uncertainty
- 25:30Speaker 2: of like kind of the guy who kicked it all
- 25:32Speaker 2: down for everybody, you know, like possibly going away forever.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I believe it or not. I got
- 25:41Speaker 1: pulled in. I got pulled in on the case.
- 25:45Speaker 2: So so like like as a witness.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Nah, I got I got uh interrogated. Oh so they
- 25:51Speaker 1: were Yeah, they interrogated me.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Damn.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know somehow I got put in it.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I mean you were around, right, So they're like.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I don't, I don't know, I don't that's crazy, I
- 26:04Speaker 1: don't know nothing.
- 26:05Speaker 2: How stressful is that?
- 26:07Speaker 1: I mean it was very stressful just to see your
- 26:10Speaker 1: best friend going through possibly ending up going to jail
- 26:14Speaker 1: for a long time. It was real stressful. And I
- 26:20Speaker 1: was there I was there. I wasn't there, uh physically,
- 26:23Speaker 1: but I was there for him, uh, you know, calling
- 26:26Speaker 1: him and talking to him. You know. Actually when it
- 26:30Speaker 1: was going on, I actually went up to the courthouse
- 26:33Speaker 1: and you know, it kind of got ugly up there.
- 26:36Speaker 1: They was trying to they were trying to trip on me. Yeah,
- 26:40Speaker 1: trying to trip on me up there, like the death row. Yeah.
- 26:45Speaker 1: So you know, it was like, oh, so this is
- 26:50Speaker 1: what it is, y'all tripping like that.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Okay. So that's when I was like, all right, fuck
- 26:55Speaker 1: this shit, I'm gone. But I still was with my homeboy,
- 27:00Speaker 1: what you know, And I was like, it is what
- 27:05Speaker 1: it is, you know.
- 27:06Speaker 2: I'm and the whole and the whole issue with that
- 27:09Speaker 2: was it over regulators or was over you just not
- 27:12Speaker 2: uh like I guess going to death jam.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Sheu probably was a little pissed that that that they
- 27:18Speaker 1: signed me. Yeah, you know, but he could have had me.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Signed, right he I'm sure he could have been ninety two.
- 27:25Speaker 1: You could have had me signed. But it can't be mad,
- 27:28Speaker 1: you know. And then it may be some other ship
- 27:29Speaker 1: that went on went on that I never knew about,
- 27:32Speaker 1: between Rustling Lee or you know, and uh, and should
- 27:36Speaker 1: so I don't know. I didn't even waste my time
- 27:39Speaker 1: thinking about that ship.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I saw a few years ago. I saw something you
- 27:44Speaker 2: were talking about. I think you said regulator made or
- 27:47Speaker 2: at least you had made like one hundred million dollars
- 27:50Speaker 2: for Death Jam or something like that. Yeah, which is
- 27:52Speaker 2: a people don't understand. Like back in the day, actual
- 27:56Speaker 2: money was spent on CDs. These days, the streaming rates
- 27:59Speaker 2: are just so it's like it's it's crazy, it's terrible,
- 28:01Speaker 2: but yeah, that's an insane amount of money. But that
- 28:05Speaker 2: was also like the era of like not the greatest
- 28:08Speaker 2: record deals.
- 28:09Speaker 1: We'll say, yeah, yeah, but I had a pretty you know,
- 28:16Speaker 1: a pretty mind was.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Okay for the time, it was okay reading Readingtotia.
- 28:24Speaker 1: We renegotiated, but because it went to what they call
- 28:29Speaker 1: the superstar status, so when that happens, you got to renegotiate.
- 28:34Speaker 1: But I started out only making like a penny, AND's
- 28:39Speaker 1: just a penny like off each album, Yeah, like a penny,
- 28:43Speaker 1: like real, Oh my god. It was low.
- 28:46Speaker 2: So they had like you probably got a cool advance,
- 28:48Speaker 2: but then your royalty on your album was nothing.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Like like not even you know it was it was
- 28:54Speaker 1: it was I mean, I mean the royalty checks that
- 28:58Speaker 1: came in was was ready some nice checks.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I'm sure you're publishing How to Be Crazy at that
- 29:03Speaker 2: time too.
- 29:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it was ever every movie. Yeah, but I should
- 29:10Speaker 1: have gotten more than than what I've got. And and
- 29:15Speaker 1: I you know, that's that's even like today, you know,
- 29:18Speaker 1: I'm like I would would think that they would, you know,
- 29:24Speaker 1: talk to UMG Death Jam talk to UMG and say, look,
- 29:29Speaker 1: this dude did a lot for us. He saved us,
- 29:31Speaker 1: he got us out to out the and we need
- 29:35Speaker 1: to reward him. Let's reward him back, honor them, and
- 29:39Speaker 1: give him his Masters. You know, Let's not make him
- 29:42Speaker 1: wait another four years. Let's give it to him right now.
- 29:46Speaker 1: You know why juice me for the rest of the Yeah,
- 29:50Speaker 1: thirty years. Yeah, you know, gon and shoot it, you know,
- 29:53Speaker 1: shoot it, shoot that.
- 29:54Speaker 2: So they own the they owned the Masters for thirty years. Yeah,
- 29:59Speaker 2: And and is that up yet? Is it almost up?
- 30:02Speaker 1: Well? They saying thirty five.
- 30:05Speaker 2: So so nineteen ninety four, is that was thirty years ago?
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yeah? Thirty years? Fuck shit is a trip, maint So.
- 30:17Speaker 2: You got five more years before they're gonna, yeah, give
- 30:20Speaker 2: you your mask. Ain't that's some SMI that's some black
- 30:23Speaker 2: ass ship right there.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's it's you know, I even who's in
- 30:26Speaker 1: charge of death? But I was even, I was even like,
- 30:30Speaker 1: that's crazy.
- 30:31Speaker 2: So a thirty five year term.
- 30:34Speaker 1: Yess, that's what they're saying, you know.
- 30:36Speaker 2: But I'm like, that's a life, that's a life.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I'm like, why just just just give it to me?
- 30:44Speaker 2: Have you had those conversations with him?
- 30:46Speaker 1: I reached out to him, shit me, Snoop and Russell
- 30:51Speaker 1: even tried to figure it out, tried to Wressell tried
- 30:55Speaker 1: to talk to the council and try to get it,
- 30:58Speaker 1: make it happen. They was like no, it's like m
- 31:02Speaker 1: hm damn. That's just like a slap in the face.
- 31:06Speaker 1: They got you uck what you did, and and they
- 31:09Speaker 1: use your likely like, dude, you were in you were
- 31:11Speaker 1: in fucking depth jan in Vendetta. Yeah, like they used.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Your likeliness as like a but yeah, like and that
- 31:16Speaker 2: was like that was years later. That's frank, well, An,
- 31:21Speaker 2: did you get any money off of depth being in
- 31:23Speaker 2: depth in Vendetta?
- 31:24Speaker 1: All we got was like in it, uh, like we
- 31:27Speaker 1: got a check for doing.
- 31:28Speaker 2: The first check. It was like, hey, look we're gonna
- 31:31Speaker 2: give you this check, you're gonna be in the game
- 31:32Speaker 2: and that's it.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Yeah, if it was royalties in there, I never got
- 31:38Speaker 1: notified about it.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Was that pretty cool being in that video game?
- 31:41Speaker 1: Like, yeah, that was cool.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that sh it was cool.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I mean right now, it's it's people come up to
- 31:47Speaker 1: me all the time like you was one of the
- 31:48Speaker 1: hardest motherfuckers the game in the Yeah, in the game,
- 31:53Speaker 1: and I was like, damn, okay, and I'm glad they
- 31:56Speaker 1: did that. But somebody should create I might even try
- 32:01Speaker 1: to do it myself, create a new one.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I've heard them talk about it, or at least I've
- 32:05Speaker 2: seen that. There's been like rumors.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Wouldn't mind investing with somebody in.
- 32:09Speaker 2: That, yeah, or just doing like a like a hip
- 32:13Speaker 2: hop It doesn't have to be one label, like it
- 32:14Speaker 2: could be like you could just be like a dope fight.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I just think that should be. Like imagine if you
- 32:19Speaker 2: could open up a game and you could select Hendrick
- 32:21Speaker 2: and then someone else will select Drake y'all scrap.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And the thing is is this okay, chop
- 32:28Speaker 1: it up, just chop it up there and give everybody
- 32:31Speaker 1: a piece, Like to say, if you five maybe eight
- 32:34Speaker 1: guys chop that ship up.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Well, then they can do like the DLC. You could
- 32:38Speaker 2: download new rappers. You know, they get get paid off
- 32:41Speaker 2: of that.
- 32:41Speaker 1: For sure, for sure it'll go crazy.
- 32:43Speaker 2: It'll go crazy. Now that'd be hard.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Man, Just have me and the motherfucker. If y'all do it,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you put me back in it again. I'm with it, yo.
- 32:52Speaker 2: It took you guys so long to do the two
- 32:54Speaker 2: on three project. I'm why is it not on any DSPs?
- 33:02Speaker 2: Because I have to. I always have to listen to
- 33:05Speaker 2: so Fly off of some shitty YouTube link.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it went the T and T went bankrupt and
- 33:13Speaker 1: from there I never knew what happened to uh, the
- 33:17Speaker 1: whole album. But I got a friend who knows where
- 33:21Speaker 1: the album is. So it's just me and Snoop and
- 33:25Speaker 1: Nate's state just going to get the masters.
- 33:28Speaker 2: And I mean you also could just buy the album
- 33:30Speaker 2: off of eBay and then rip it and.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Yeah, we get the masters. I know a guy who
- 33:36Speaker 1: knows who has the masters, but they can't. You can't
- 33:39Speaker 1: do nothing with it, you know, can't do nothing with
- 33:42Speaker 1: it without talking to us. Yeah, so we let's talk
- 33:47Speaker 1: with Snoop. Actually we go get We're gonna we should
- 33:50Speaker 1: go get that. We're gonna go get it and then
- 33:52Speaker 1: we're gonna re release it on the d I got it.
- 33:55Speaker 1: I got another album. I got an album. I'm a
- 34:00Speaker 1: lease on the DSPs again. That's that's that. That's a
- 34:05Speaker 1: really really dope album. It's called g Files. That motherfucker
- 34:12Speaker 1: has got some dope ship on it. I still got everything.
- 34:16Speaker 1: It's just it never got put out. Is there?
- 34:21Speaker 2: Isn't there another one of your albums just missing.
- 34:24Speaker 1: In the midnight hour in the midnight but it's it's
- 34:27Speaker 1: once again. It's a company, uh called Peppermint. That's that
- 34:32Speaker 1: just put it out And I don't own the masters
- 34:34Speaker 1: to that. And I'm like, wait a minute.
- 34:37Speaker 2: It was a very very very slept on album too.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Another dope record, super dope, super dope Reduction was.
- 34:44Speaker 2: I think some people might say that might be your
- 34:45Speaker 2: second best album.
- 34:47Speaker 1: It is, it is, it is yeah, And and it
- 34:52Speaker 1: came later to like damn Warrant.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Remember when that she came out, because you were what record?
- 34:57Speaker 2: Did you work to radio? Because I just started in
- 34:59Speaker 2: radio around that time. But I remember I remember having
- 35:02Speaker 2: like the promo items and ship, but I remember you
- 35:03Speaker 2: had a song off of that album that you guys
- 35:06Speaker 2: actually worked.
- 35:07Speaker 1: No one get you down, let no one.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Yeah, body, you gotta get all you gotta get all
- 35:15Speaker 2: the stuff up online. Man. Yeah, that's two or three
- 35:18Speaker 2: albums from God. I'm working on.
- 35:20Speaker 1: It, man, I'm working on it. Yeah. But that that
- 35:24Speaker 1: was a trip man. And then I got a lot
- 35:26Speaker 1: of unreleased music that I'm gonna start putting up, just
- 35:30Speaker 1: building a whole newer catalog for sure. Yes.
- 35:34Speaker 2: And is there still uh any music that is out
- 35:39Speaker 2: or that isn't out that's on hard DriveH from Nate Dogg.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I got I got some records that that
- 35:46Speaker 1: that we actually Me and Nate was doing a whole album.
- 35:49Speaker 1: So I still got the records that we was doing.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Some records got leaked.
- 35:57Speaker 2: And at least though matter, I feel like real fans
- 35:59Speaker 2: pay attentionally. There's some of these ads.
- 36:00Speaker 1: But I still I'm still gonna put those records that
- 36:03Speaker 1: we did have. I'm gonna still put those on it too.
- 36:06Speaker 1: So I may do like a just some Nate dog
- 36:08Speaker 1: and war G e P.
- 36:09Speaker 2: And I think you should finish it, you know, maybe
- 36:12Speaker 2: put his son on something. Yeah, his son is col
- 36:15Speaker 2: and his son man, his son got that tone when
- 36:18Speaker 2: he does the singing. Yeah, yeah, just like he just
- 36:21Speaker 2: did something ship with Roddy Rax and I was like
- 36:24Speaker 2: that sounds like Nake dogg like tell you Yeah. So
- 36:30Speaker 2: so there is a hopefully we'll get a little Nate
- 36:33Speaker 2: Dog Warren GP in the future.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Yes, indeed, he knows. He knows what's up.
- 36:38Speaker 2: It's Snoop on there.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:40Speaker 2: Are you have you have you heard or been involved
- 36:43Speaker 2: at all with any of this Snoop Dre album? That's
- 36:46Speaker 2: that that they just did a listening session yesterday.
- 36:49Speaker 1: No, I've never Uh. I didn't get no calls or nothing.
- 36:54Speaker 1: I would have loved to have been a part of
- 36:55Speaker 1: it or just contributed something to it. But you know
- 37:03Speaker 1: that's I guess that's what was him and Dre's idea.
- 37:05Speaker 1: But Ship, I'm gonna do Man Snoop one Ship, We're
- 37:09Speaker 1: gonna do one him did one? Man Snoop gonna do
- 37:12Speaker 1: one because ain't nobody.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Got down you produce the whole thing. Yeah.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a record with him on my EP,
- 37:20Speaker 1: him and Corrupt called we call ourselves the doublemin Gang.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I like that. Yeah, it's hard.
- 37:25Speaker 2: I like the I mean, you know, if you guys
- 37:27Speaker 2: remember the music video, you guys are morphing in the
- 37:29Speaker 2: dogs and ship. Oh yeah, what what did you learn
- 37:34Speaker 2: being a kid around? Because you're an amazing producer. I
- 37:38Speaker 2: don't think like people understand, like you even did a
- 37:41Speaker 2: song recently that was big. Was the Neo g Z
- 37:44Speaker 2: record you produced that? Yes, indeed, But what did you
- 37:48Speaker 2: learn being around Dre and like peak Death Road days?
- 37:51Speaker 2: Just as from the production.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Side, just just learned learn how to out of uh
- 38:02Speaker 1: pretty much like watching him how he EQ and and
- 38:06Speaker 1: use effects and stuff like that, and and also work
- 38:09Speaker 1: with live live instrumentation, live musicians, so that kind of
- 38:15Speaker 1: I learned that from him, and also out of splice tape.
- 38:18Speaker 1: He showed me. He taught me how to splice tape.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Because you like cut music.
- 38:24Speaker 1: That's what it is, splice. That's what the Splice name
- 38:26Speaker 1: came from. From splicing, splicing tape and just just being there,
- 38:33Speaker 1: being just being there when when we was all working,
- 38:37Speaker 1: just watching him how he get down and you know,
- 38:41Speaker 1: from doing the things that I learned and adding to
- 38:44Speaker 1: what he was doing, you know, And I mean he's
- 38:50Speaker 1: incredible dude, man, just really dope and his ears just
- 38:55Speaker 1: and out of this world, you know, and he got
- 38:58Speaker 1: this little thing he did. I don't want to show.
- 39:00Speaker 1: I ain't gonna show a secret, but it's let me quit.
- 39:03Speaker 2: I ain't gonna shows like the most this one.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Thing where he when he listened to a record, he
- 39:09Speaker 1: do this little thing. I'm like, oh, that's pretty dope.
- 39:13Speaker 1: That's fire and uh just just you know, just being
- 39:18Speaker 1: around him is dope.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Did you have any idea the gravity of being
- 39:25Speaker 2: a part of the chronic when you guys were recording it,
- 39:28Speaker 2: like you know, that's one of the ones on the mantle, Like.
- 39:32Speaker 1: We was just we just wanted to help dre uh so.
- 39:36Speaker 2: Much on the line at the time, Dre n w
- 39:38Speaker 2: a is over.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, he said he was at a low point
- 39:42Speaker 1: in his life. Yeah, you know, and I brought Snoop.
- 39:45Speaker 1: I brought Snoop, brought Nate, brought Dash.
- 39:48Speaker 2: The trajectory of hip hop forever by doing that.
- 39:51Speaker 1: But yeah, Snoop brought rb X, We brought nay Dog
- 39:55Speaker 1: in so far. Yeah, yes, indeed, we we just wanted
- 40:01Speaker 1: to see him win, you know, and.
- 40:04Speaker 2: He yeah, because at the time, like there's there's this
- 40:07Speaker 2: he left ruthless and death row yet.
- 40:10Speaker 1: Nah, and we looked at it. If he win we're
- 40:14Speaker 1: gonna win because you know, he gonna look out for us,
- 40:18Speaker 1: you know.
- 40:18Speaker 2: So that's the deep the deep cover success was cool.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Oh maybe we got something here with these two. Yeah.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Yeah. We immediately started working and that's when Corrupt came in.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Like right after that. We met Corrupt at the Roxy.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Him and Snoop battled each other at the talent show
- 40:37Speaker 1: and they was busting. It was back and forth and
- 40:41Speaker 1: we couldn't even say, well, you want want you one,
- 40:45Speaker 1: and so it got broke up. But I wouldn't let
- 40:49Speaker 1: Corrup get away. I was like, look, give me your number.
- 40:52Speaker 1: So I got his number and I called him probably
- 40:55Speaker 1: about a week later, told him come up to the studio,
- 40:59Speaker 1: up to Dre House because Drake Drake took us in
- 41:01Speaker 1: and told us we don't want I don't want y'all
- 41:04Speaker 1: in the hood, y'all come live with you know. So
- 41:08Speaker 1: but we were still out in the field just going
- 41:10Speaker 1: to ship like the talent shows and ship like that.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Even though we was we was with Dre and Uh.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I bought Corrupt up there. I sat there and had
- 41:22Speaker 1: the beach inside my MPC sixty and it was routed
- 41:25Speaker 1: through the board into the cassette deck, so I can't
- 41:29Speaker 1: fuck up. It's one take on like actual one take
- 41:34Speaker 1: one take you gotta because But but what him or
- 41:37Speaker 1: what Corrupt or Snoop used to do is that they
- 41:39Speaker 1: make sure that they knew that motherfucker all the way
- 41:42Speaker 1: to from top to bottom. Yeah, by heart, by heart.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Oh no, then it was on paper, so they going yeah, yeah,
- 41:50Speaker 1: straight off the straight off. So I hit that record.
- 41:57Speaker 1: We I did some scratching and shop in the beginning,
- 42:00Speaker 1: and after I did the scratches and ship, then Corrupt
- 42:04Speaker 1: just started busting and we did like five songs like that,
- 42:08Speaker 1: and I took it. I let Snooping everybody here. Then
- 42:11Speaker 1: I let Drey and Shug here and they was like, ship,
- 42:14Speaker 1: we signing this nigga signing. So that was another one
- 42:18Speaker 1: that came in, you know, through through me, and then
- 42:22Speaker 1: uh ever as well bid Uh Broomfield then came in
- 42:28Speaker 1: after that, and those were Corrupt's managers.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Yo. I'm curious because you being you're in the perspective
- 42:36Speaker 2: of being a part of the entourage, being near the
- 42:40Speaker 2: situation with Drey and Easy's beef, do you recall your
- 42:46Speaker 2: reaction or just the attitude or the reaction when everyone
- 42:49Speaker 2: heard real motherfucking gee's.
- 42:53Speaker 1: I mean it was just like shit like because stuff
- 42:59Speaker 1: is hard, and then us so crazy as we bumped
- 43:01Speaker 1: heads with Uh. We bumped heads with Easy and Uh
- 43:04Speaker 1: and Uh in the uh the casino right there in Compton.
- 43:09Speaker 1: It was it was our b r e A one
- 43:11Speaker 1: of those uh uh conferences there. So we bumped heads
- 43:16Speaker 1: with n't it was getting ugly like.
- 43:18Speaker 2: After that song dropped.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it was all around that time. But it was
- 43:21Speaker 1: like Easy was like professor because that's what he called me, professor,
- 43:25Speaker 1: and I'm like, I'm not tripping. I was like, but
- 43:29Speaker 1: everybody else was tripping because this this is my guy.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I don't give a fuck. This is my guy Easy,
- 43:34Speaker 1: that's my dog, that's my guy. I grew up with
- 43:36Speaker 1: this nigga. I ain't so I've got all that ship
- 43:39Speaker 1: to slow down and got everybody to shake hands, snoop
- 43:42Speaker 1: and everybody to shake hands with Easy, all of that, And.
- 43:47Speaker 2: But if you were able to get them to shake hands.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yeah, right there in the compon casino, in the middle
- 43:53Speaker 1: of the ship. Yeah, one eight seven from above the law.
- 43:55Speaker 1: He was there. He had Tad he was there too,
- 43:58Speaker 1: And because I think he was with Easy and this
- 44:02Speaker 1: was my guys. So but I had my guys with me,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and everybody like Buffalo was on roostless right, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 44:08Speaker 1: and uh so that that didn't happen, and a lot
- 44:11Speaker 1: of shit got squashed right then and there. Because then,
- 44:14Speaker 1: you know, even when when Drey and they were saying
- 44:16Speaker 1: Dre and and Easy was beefing easy with Easy stayed
- 44:20Speaker 1: right here. Dre stayed right here his backyard looking Dre's
- 44:25Speaker 1: front yard. Wow, we were staying. So he would come
- 44:29Speaker 1: down the hill and I'll be pulling the trash can
- 44:32Speaker 1: in and pushing the trash out for the trash man
- 44:34Speaker 1: to come, and he'd come down like, Professor, what's up?
- 44:39Speaker 1: So he'd pull up on I'm like shit, what's going on? Man?
- 44:42Speaker 1: He was like where Dre at? And I'm like, shit,
- 44:44Speaker 1: he's not here right now. He probably at the studio
- 44:47Speaker 1: or something telling I came by, and he'd take up
- 44:50Speaker 1: in the middle of all the ship, in the middle
- 44:52Speaker 1: all the all of that shit. That's what was so crazy,
- 44:57Speaker 1: you know. And that's what he called me, professor every
- 45:01Speaker 1: since I was a pup.
- 45:02Speaker 2: That ship is insane, that's crazy. Yo. So, uh you
- 45:09Speaker 2: I saw you're doing the Shout out to uh for
- 45:12Speaker 2: that they're doing their festival in San Bernardino. Yeah, which
- 45:16Speaker 2: is are you like hip it all to like that
- 45:18Speaker 2: genre of like corridos music is like popping.
- 45:21Speaker 1: Right now, Like, yeah, I'm with it.
- 45:23Speaker 2: I'm with It's like the Mexican trap music.
- 45:27Speaker 1: It's a it's it's all hip hop, it is it.
- 45:30Speaker 2: I mean in in in in in spirit, baby baby
- 45:34Speaker 2: hip hop driven.
- 45:35Speaker 1: Yeah sure.
- 45:36Speaker 2: I mean you see the way the guys be dressing
- 45:37Speaker 2: like rappers.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean it's dope and it's just it's
- 45:42Speaker 1: really really cool. Shouts out to Bobby d.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Bobby is amazing.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah, great dude man for bringing you know, all all
- 45:52Speaker 1: all the cultures together together for you know, and he's
- 45:55Speaker 1: he gon. He one of the biggest in the in
- 45:57Speaker 1: the business right now, the pro the promotion game. Yeah.
- 46:02Speaker 1: And uh that's my god, that's my dog. We talk
- 46:04Speaker 1: all the time. Yeah.
- 46:06Speaker 2: I think he's also done such a great job of
- 46:08Speaker 2: like putting together these dope like shows for like my generation.
- 46:14Speaker 1: Yeah you know what I mean, you see how he
- 46:17Speaker 1: got it. I mean you got you got Kodak Black,
- 46:21Speaker 1: But then you see Warren g and you see two
- 46:23Speaker 1: short and you see little baby sex he read right,
- 46:27Speaker 1: and and then you have this ship is that that's
- 46:30Speaker 1: all It's dope because everybody loved all of it. So
- 46:34Speaker 1: the ship is the ship is That ship is dope.
- 46:36Speaker 1: And then I got something special that I'm gonna do
- 46:39Speaker 1: there as well. It's the intro to my to my show.
- 46:44Speaker 1: So that's it's gonna be real fun. And I'm doing
- 46:47Speaker 1: to Mitch a lot of rumbles same day.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Oh ship, You're gonna have a busy day.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Yes, indeed, yo, I love it. Yo.
- 46:55Speaker 2: You you we were talking off off the ice. You
- 47:00Speaker 2: you're drinking non alcoholic beer. You stopped drinking? Was there
- 47:02Speaker 2: a reason why?
- 47:04Speaker 1: Yeah? I I always get a physical before I hit
- 47:09Speaker 1: the road go on tour where if I no, Im'll
- 47:13Speaker 1: be gone for a while. Make sure I get a
- 47:14Speaker 1: physical and I tell my doctor to check everything. So
- 47:19Speaker 1: I've been fine off these few times. And he had
- 47:24Speaker 1: hit me on my last physical and he was like,
- 47:27Speaker 1: your fare ten levels is high and your liver end
- 47:30Speaker 1: zymes is kind of off. So I was like, so
- 47:33Speaker 1: what does that mean? So my first the first thing
- 47:36Speaker 1: hit me was like drinking, you know, because I'm all
- 47:40Speaker 1: I feel. I was like, damn, I back hurt right
- 47:43Speaker 1: down the rights, like ah shit. So he made me
- 47:48Speaker 1: test again and my fare tem was still up up
- 47:55Speaker 1: like it was eight hundred and something, and then it
- 47:57Speaker 1: went down to seven hundred and something. Like I had
- 48:00Speaker 1: stopped drinking though, but when I when I went to sing,
- 48:03Speaker 1: so he had me coming in for ultrasound. They did
- 48:06Speaker 1: ultrasound and look to check my liver, my spleen, my
- 48:10Speaker 1: gallbladder and all that stuff. So they looked at it
- 48:13Speaker 1: and then he came back and he said, you have
- 48:15Speaker 1: a fatty liver. So he said, it's it's it's uh,
- 48:20Speaker 1: it's totally reversible, but you're gonna have to stop drinking
- 48:24Speaker 1: and you're gonna have to change your diet. And I immediately,
- 48:29Speaker 1: like I had maybe two beers after that, right after
- 48:34Speaker 1: I left, I drunk two beers and I said, this
- 48:36Speaker 1: is after this, I'm done. I'm gonna go ahead and
- 48:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna get my shit together. And ever since then,
- 48:43Speaker 1: I've been drinking. Yeah, I feel great. I've been exercising
- 48:48Speaker 1: it every day. Every day of the week. I exercise,
- 48:51Speaker 1: get a little bit of weight training. I don't do
- 48:53Speaker 1: a whole bunch of hard weight training, but I do
- 48:56Speaker 1: a little weight training, and I do the boxing for
- 48:58Speaker 1: my cardio. But I do it every day. I feel better.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I still be kind of like kind of tired because
- 49:07Speaker 1: of the working out, and then I hit my you
- 49:09Speaker 1: know that that regulator, and you know that brings me
- 49:13Speaker 1: to the where I'm like, oh ship, but it feels good.
- 49:18Speaker 1: You know, it helps. It helps all the way around.
- 49:23Speaker 1: You know some I used to like always howking and stuff.
- 49:27Speaker 1: I don't do that no more.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Yeah, people don't know if you have a lot of muk.
- 49:31Speaker 2: It's like that's like a that's a that's a yeah.
- 49:33Speaker 1: I don't. I don't even I'm taking a. I drink milk,
- 49:37Speaker 1: this whole milk. This is dandelion, milk, thistle, dandelion, turmeric. Uh,
- 49:43Speaker 1: it's some other few other herbs up in there too.
- 49:46Speaker 1: I drink it. I don't want to say the names.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I don't know if you know, but I will say that.
- 49:53Speaker 1: But you don't mind. Okay. It's it's called dose. Uh.
- 49:58Speaker 1: If they see this, look, I better give me a
- 50:00Speaker 1: goddamn endorsement on that. Yeah, it's called dose, but it's
- 50:04Speaker 1: a liver detox. So I I drink that every day, uh,
- 50:09Speaker 1: every morning and every night. And it kills inflammation or anything,
- 50:14Speaker 1: so to hurt. And I was feeling kind of went away,
- 50:17Speaker 1: you know. Every now and then I feel it, like
- 50:19Speaker 1: when I work out and I'm doing my abs and shit,
- 50:21Speaker 1: I'll be like, oh shit, but it'll go away, you know,
- 50:26Speaker 1: compared to when I first stopped. I was like, damn,
- 50:28Speaker 1: what the fuck going on? Like why is my ship hurting?
- 50:32Speaker 1: Faty liver?
- 50:33Speaker 2: Wow?
- 50:34Speaker 1: Faty liver disease and it and it and it's you know,
- 50:37Speaker 1: it's that's your liver is inflamed. And when I used
- 50:41Speaker 1: to drink, that was kind of like numbing it, Like
- 50:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't feel it because my liver used to like okay,
- 50:47Speaker 1: he giving me what I want and with that ship
- 50:51Speaker 1: because I'm immune to it now, so I gotta have it.
- 50:53Speaker 1: But when I stopped, that's when I start hurting more.
- 50:57Speaker 1: I'm like, damn. But the liquor was none so wised up.
- 51:02Speaker 1: I'm not saying I'm gonna just stop forever, right, but
- 51:08Speaker 1: if I do drink again, it'll be like in moderation,
- 51:12Speaker 1: every week everyone they had a glass of wine and
- 51:14Speaker 1: that's it. Nothing else during the week. On the weekend,
- 51:21Speaker 1: a glass of wine and that's it because I don't
- 51:24Speaker 1: do nothing for me right, almost backslid.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Hey man, we were talking about how good cold beer is.
- 51:31Speaker 2: It's like this is there's nothing like a cold beer
- 51:33Speaker 2: of me.
- 51:33Speaker 1: I said, shit, I wouldn't mind having one of them
- 51:35Speaker 1: right now.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Yo, there's an album that I owned as a child,
- 51:40Speaker 2: and I remember you being involved with it somehow vaguely,
- 51:43Speaker 2: and I could never find it ever again. It's not
- 51:45Speaker 2: on I don't think it's on Spotify. It was like
- 51:49Speaker 2: I think it was a was it be Ball's Best
- 51:53Speaker 2: Kept Secrets where it was like all the NBA players
- 51:56Speaker 2: are rapping. I think you made a beat on here
- 51:57Speaker 2: or something.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Oh well, Cedric Salas, yeah, I don't.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I don't know what it was like all like Jason
- 52:03Speaker 2: Kidd had a song.
- 52:06Speaker 1: Yeah I did. I did sex. Actually I produced a
- 52:09Speaker 1: record for Cedric Sabalas. It went gold. He had a gold.
- 52:15Speaker 2: Record and got a gold record.
- 52:17Speaker 1: In Shack I did, I said, I did be a
- 52:20Speaker 1: father to your child.
- 52:21Speaker 2: Wow? Yeah, were you like in the studio with Shack?
- 52:25Speaker 1: I was in there, he came to the I went
- 52:27Speaker 1: and did it actually in Philadelphia. I produced that record
- 52:31Speaker 1: right in Philadelphia, And while I was with Shack, and came.
- 52:35Speaker 1: He came in while I was there, but I didn't
- 52:36Speaker 1: know he was coming. Wow. So I'm I'm after I'm
- 52:39Speaker 1: on the drum machine, fucking with the drums, doing all
- 52:43Speaker 1: kind of ship and just all of a sudden boom
- 52:46Speaker 1: my head just I'm like, hey, what the fuck? All up? Hey?
- 52:49Speaker 1: I couldn't even move this motherfucker palm my whole head like, hey,
- 52:54Speaker 1: let me go, mother, let me you turn around?
- 52:58Speaker 2: Yo, what's up?
- 53:00Speaker 1: What's up? One? And I'm like, what's going on? Man?
- 53:03Speaker 1: I said, God, damn ship. You can't come up, but
- 53:06Speaker 1: can't get away from you. He get the hold of
- 53:10Speaker 1: that head.
- 53:11Speaker 2: I think Shaq is the best basketball rapper ever. Yeah, Lyrically,
- 53:16Speaker 2: Shack is nice.
- 53:17Speaker 1: He set it up with the funick fuse snakes.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Yeah, and he actually could like I always thought he
- 53:24Speaker 2: be buzzing and he was the first guy people. I
- 53:26Speaker 2: don't think people realize he's the like there when the
- 53:29Speaker 2: jay Z Nos beef was happening, there was a Shack
- 53:32Speaker 2: song that had jay Z and Nas on it together
- 53:36Speaker 2: before they ever had their issues. But Shaq had some shit.
- 53:39Speaker 2: I mean, you can't stay af the rain is platinum, Like, yeah,
- 53:42Speaker 2: so you you got to produce, Like, what was it
- 53:44Speaker 2: was it? Were you helping him out with lines or anything?
- 53:46Speaker 1: Nah? He did all He did it all on his own.
- 53:49Speaker 2: That's great.
- 53:49Speaker 1: He did.
- 53:50Speaker 2: This is like in the middle of like shak Mania.
- 53:52Speaker 2: There's toys of them. He's in every commercial. Yeah. Was
- 53:54Speaker 2: he on the Magic of the Lakers at the time,
- 53:56Speaker 2: he was with the Lakers.
- 53:57Speaker 1: Okay, wait wait wait wait wait now he was with
- 53:59Speaker 1: the Lakers with the Lakers, Yeah, he was the Lakers man. Shack, Well,
- 54:03Speaker 1: we used to well, well bet fast, like, what's up?
- 54:08Speaker 1: What you're talking about? We get we get it cracked,
- 54:12Speaker 1: like just gambling, random, random. So we see each other,
- 54:16Speaker 1: bump head, what's up? Let's go yeah, playing flights?
- 54:22Speaker 2: Uh be like on the PJ of shackshooting dice or
- 54:26Speaker 2: what not on the PJS.
- 54:28Speaker 1: But I missed pj's dealing with him.
- 54:31Speaker 2: That's so funny, and I had that.
- 54:33Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta go, man, that ship is hilarious. Wow.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Shout out to Shaquille and you cool dude.
- 54:40Speaker 1: Man.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Another thing I always wanted to. I'm just curious your perspective.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Dog Father comes out. You're obviously by then. On your
- 54:49Speaker 2: second album, first album, I'm saying dog Father the second
- 54:55Speaker 2: Snoop album drops, which was I think ninety six, So
- 54:58Speaker 2: you're you're probably.
- 54:59Speaker 1: Right that was right, Yeah, would take a look over
- 55:01Speaker 1: your shoulder.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Snoop ends up. I think dog Father. I love dog Father,
- 55:06Speaker 2: but I think it was you know a lot of
- 55:08Speaker 2: people it wasn't dog Used obviously, right, Yeah, Snooper tell
- 55:11Speaker 2: you that things go left for death throw he leaves,
- 55:13Speaker 2: he goes to no limit. What was your thought on
- 55:16Speaker 2: like the no limit move just for him just being
- 55:19Speaker 2: like close to the situation, Like.
- 55:23Speaker 1: I don't I mean, I was just rolling with whatever
- 55:28Speaker 1: Snoop wanted to roll with. You know, at first I
- 55:31Speaker 1: was I was like, I think he probably could have
- 55:34Speaker 1: signed with like anybody.
- 55:36Speaker 2: That he had, anybody in the world.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, anybody. But he made his decision was to
- 55:42Speaker 1: go with master P. And master P was cracking at
- 55:45Speaker 1: the time, and sure, and he did a lot for
- 55:47Speaker 1: Snoop and he showed him a lot of love, and
- 55:50Speaker 1: you know, because Snooper hit me like, look the snigger
- 55:53Speaker 1: bought me a brand new house, bought me a gas
- 55:56Speaker 1: station because all of that. So you know, I was
- 56:01Speaker 1: happy for him, and like I said, whatever move he
- 56:04Speaker 1: was with. I was with you know what I mean,
- 56:06Speaker 1: because that's my best friend.
- 56:08Speaker 2: Can you tell me?
- 56:09Speaker 1: Uh?
- 56:12Speaker 2: You mentioned a little bit earlier Tupac's writing process was
- 56:15Speaker 2: super crazy and fast. What is your craziest Tupac studio
- 56:19Speaker 2: story that you got?
- 56:20Speaker 1: Uh? When I did? I did Definition of a Thug
- 56:27Speaker 1: form produced that actually for the party, just the soundtrack
- 56:32Speaker 1: and just the first time seeing somebody break a blunt
- 56:36Speaker 1: down and roll a blunt and you know, that was
- 56:40Speaker 1: the first time I ever seen that. You know, I'm
- 56:42Speaker 1: used to joints, right, and I wasn't even really I was.
- 56:46Speaker 1: I mean I used to be around like a lot
- 56:49Speaker 1: of women and shit. But he you know, it was
- 56:52Speaker 1: like he flooded it, just all like he had all
- 56:56Speaker 1: of the he had some he had bitches.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Uh, all of this was just in one night, just
- 57:03Speaker 1: all of this ship in one night. And then everybody
- 57:08Speaker 1: from Thug Life came in Big Sight Mcadosha's uh uh
- 57:13Speaker 1: double up Rated R little Psyche, you know, but just
- 57:17Speaker 1: a bunch of guys, little Rated or like, all these
- 57:22Speaker 1: guys came and then I did how long would they
- 57:25Speaker 1: more me? In the same night, Definition of a Thug
- 57:28Speaker 1: went from Definition of aer thug to how long will
- 57:31Speaker 1: they mourn me? All in one night, to send Tupac
- 57:36Speaker 1: roller blunt for the first time, for the first time,
- 57:38Speaker 1: and all these bad bitches in the studio at the
- 57:41Speaker 1: same women. I don't want I don't.
- 57:43Speaker 2: Want to just I mean, yeah, back then it was
- 57:45Speaker 2: a lot more acceptable and.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Just just being able to to finally sit and have
- 57:51Speaker 1: a conversation with him and just we just talked about
- 57:56Speaker 1: a lot. He was just like like asking me, like
- 58:00Speaker 1: he was interviewing me, like about the death ro shouldn't
- 58:03Speaker 1: how like what's up with me? Like why I'm not there?
- 58:06Speaker 1: And right, you know, all the oh, he was asking
- 58:08Speaker 1: me all that shit, and I was just telling him
- 58:10Speaker 1: everything that I was going through, and I, boy, shit,
- 58:16Speaker 1: you not. He put a lot of that shit right
- 58:18Speaker 1: up in the motherfucking song. I was like, god damn
- 58:22Speaker 1: when I had a forty five he put that in there,
- 58:26Speaker 1: and uh, all the s I was talking about how
- 58:29Speaker 1: I was, I'm starving out in these streets, you know,
- 58:32Speaker 1: and he I seen, he said, t uh he's mentioned
- 58:35Speaker 1: the tummy go i'ma give him a tummy bride d
- 58:38Speaker 1: y everything, And I I looked, I looked at when
- 58:40Speaker 1: I heard it, cause he didn't let me hear it.
- 58:43Speaker 1: He went in there and did it. You know how
- 58:45Speaker 1: sometimes the engineer and the and the artists are just
- 58:48Speaker 1: going headphones and record, right, he did it. I didn't
- 58:52Speaker 1: even hear it, you know, until he finished. Once. Once
- 58:55Speaker 1: he finished, the engineer played it back up loud. I
- 58:58Speaker 1: was like, this, dude, is a trip, he said, and
- 59:01Speaker 1: took some of that ship. I talked to him about
- 59:03Speaker 1: the fucking song.
- 59:04Speaker 2: That ship's crazy and uh.
- 59:07Speaker 1: And uh, because it was, I was, I was pretty
- 59:10Speaker 1: I was hurt at that time. I was. I was crushed,
- 59:13Speaker 1: pretty pretty crushed because I wasn't with Snoop and dra
- 59:16Speaker 1: and none of my none of my guys.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's almost like during during during that era, like
- 59:20Speaker 2: you guys should have been like a joining each other's
- 59:22Speaker 2: success together, as opposed to being like, well, since I'm
- 59:25Speaker 2: not on your label and Shugar feels some type of
- 59:27Speaker 2: way we are kind of a part. That's that I
- 59:30Speaker 2: had to suck.
- 59:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
- 59:31Speaker 2: It was terrible because you're fucking on fire too, so
- 59:35Speaker 2: I'm sure like, yo, this regular ships everywhere.
- 59:38Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and it's just you know, I wanted to
- 59:42Speaker 1: them to enjoy the success with me.
- 59:44Speaker 2: Yeah you man, not for sure and vice versa. I'm sure. Yeah, yeah,
- 59:49Speaker 2: that's got to be crazy, like a song like how
- 59:52Speaker 2: long will they mourn me? Like making that song while
- 59:55Speaker 2: the studio environment is bitches?
- 59:57Speaker 1: Yeah yeah yeah, I mean because he got a call. Actually,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: he had got the call that his his homeboy Cato,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: had got killed in Detroit.
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: Wow. Yeah, So that was the inspiration because it's like,
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: that's a serious.
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: When he got the call and he was like, one,
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: you got something And I was like, yeah, you.
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: Know that's crazy. And that was the second record you
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: did that night?
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: Yeah, And what's the trip is that? I used another
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: the same sample. I used the sample that I used
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: on my ample on my album. I use it again
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: for him, just as like on some mixtape type ship. Right,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: So I took super Sol's is the same beat and
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I did it. I redid it and did it for him.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: For how long were they more on? Man?
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: That second? Yeah? It's it's funny because uh, you you're
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: you come like you sample? That's what you do?
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: Do you have?
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Do you like? Because I talked to guys like Status Select,
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: the Alchemists. Sometimes it's just like dude, sometimes you just
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: let it fly man like, yeah, because you can't get
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: ahold of the estate or it's just like hopefully they
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: don't catch it. Yeah, I mean because like at the
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: end of the day, it's like if you really had
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: to clear every single sample drum well, I did.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I did well.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: I'm sure you had to on depth jamah. But even
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: just like these days, it's like if you're an independent artist,
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: it's almost impossible you couldn't afford to put an album out,
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: Like, well I just did it, and you cleared everything.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: I just did it with with the with the single
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I got was oh okay, keep sweat.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: I mean yeah, but I think there's obvious there's obvious.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Ones you sweat. He ain't no joke, you know what
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: I'm saying.
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: That's an obvious sample, right. I feel like there's like
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: some of the like more like yoah, I took this
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: breakbeat off this record I found at the store, you
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: know what I mean, get.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Away with like you can get away with it because
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: a lot of that stuff was probably just like nobody
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: is even on it, you know what I mean. Sure, yeah,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: so some things you can't get away with.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: You said, you and Zoe have a a lot of
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: other songs together or you're planning on doing something.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Now we got we got some songs. I just haven't
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: put my verses on and edited his part your beats, yeah, ok, yeah,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: But what I did was, I, uh, even with the
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: single we got right now, let me breathe, I had
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: to piece that together because he just came in and
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: wrapped and then you and you took it and then
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: you had the formatted and piece it all together. So
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I got to get in there with the records that
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: he did now piece yeah, piece them all together once
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: in then I'll drop a verse or whoever he wants
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: to get down on it, like if it was a
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: problem or somebody come get down, or even if Kendrick
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: want to jump on one. You know, I wouldn't mind
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: producing some ship for Kendrick.
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Would producing some ship for Kendrick.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: He get up under one of these, It's it's gonna
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: be another game changing.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: What were your thoughts on the whole? Not like us,
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: euphoria everything. I mean, it feels like the spotlight is.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: On l a a uh. That ship is dope as
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: far as him and Kendrick, and I mean as far
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: as him and Drake and all of that stuff. I
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: don't get into that, of course, like as far as.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: You're warned you you wouldn't get into it. Man, you're
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: like both.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: Like both of them, and they both talented dudes. They
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: just got their differences with each other, you know. But
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: you know, the ship that Kendrick did was dope.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: I just feel like it just it just reminds me
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: of like it was like a moment of like real
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: hip hop for a second. You know, Yeah, it was
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: like this, Yeah, it's stayed in and I mean, at
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: least from what we know, it stayed on stayed on wax, you.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: Know, yeah, yeah, yeah, just on wax. You know, they
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: don't want to kill you.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: And you're telling me Easy and Doctor dreveror neighbors during
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: their beef is fucking crazy, straight up like backyard neighbors.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Straight up bush and Jerry Heller.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: Oh that's that's great.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: He stayed down the street.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Oh hell, that's fucking wild.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Jerry Hella down here, Easy up here.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: Dre Everybody in the same fucking on the same fucking community.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: That ship is insane. Talk to me about the tour
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: that you announced you're going out on the road.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I got a tour coming up, uh thirty year
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: anniversary tour men exhibit. We got a tool X to
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: the Z. Yeah, it's showing so dope he got he
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: got some dope ship.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he's coming up on some anniversaries for
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: like At the Speed of Life and Forty Days and
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: Forty Nights for sure, even even Restless has got to
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: be I don't even yeah, I don't even want to
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: speculate how those albums are because that don't make me
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: feel really fucking old.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: But yeah, hey we're still young.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so you guys are gonna hit the road together.
- 1:04:50Speaker 2: Are you doing the live band thing? I feel like
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: you with the live band.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I got a couple of things, a couple in the production.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: I got some my introduction to you know, I am
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: gonna I am gonna have a couple. I might have
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: a live drummer and I'm gonna have a live keyboard

- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's it, That's all you need. And DJ.

- 1:05:20Speaker 1: I'm gonna do that. People are gonna be like, oh,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: that's dope.
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: Fire, Yo, give me your if we were to take
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: Dre out of the conversation, because that's an obvious one.

- 1:05:34Speaker 2: your West Coast producer, Mount Rushmore? Hip hop? Let's talk

- 1:07:46Speaker 2: so you got the song out with though, that's gonna
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: be a part of your EP, and then separately you're

- 1:08:06Speaker 1: Look, Kendrick J. Cole, Oh, y'all tap man with your
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: boy man.

- 1:08:15Speaker 2: Did you listen to the Problem DJ Quick album?
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Yeah, Dope Fire the record Coroad. I told him that
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: the my favorite record on there is the record he
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: did with Cee Low who is another guy I'm gonna
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: tap in with some records. What I love. His voice
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: is incredible. He got that nake dog Phiel to him. Well, yeah, yes,
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: indeed him and Jazzy Fay for sure, that's another dope producer. Yeah.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: I feel like you should. You guys should try to
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: approach if you do his OWD project, try.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: To pro another dope producer.
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: In the same way that they did the I think
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: that Quick uh that Quick problem I was done like
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: flawlessly dope.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Yeah for sure. I told Quick he was on the
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: road with us in Canada.
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I remember, because that was around the time
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: the PopOut happened.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, and everybody was like, where's DJ Quick, Yeah,
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: he's on tour with Snoop Yeah, were you there?
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Because I think Quick said he cried.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Snoop Warn and Snoop Warning. Quick was in Canada.
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: Know what I'm saying. I heard I heard Quick said
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: he was like emotional because he missed it because he
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: saw it online and he was like, I think did
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: you Like, were you guys all around each other being like, Yo,
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: what the fuck is going on? And what is Kenny
- 1:09:23Speaker 2: doing in l A right now?
