- 0:01You seemed like a nice guy. Why'd they put you in here? Because
- 0:04they were a pink shirt? I understand people thought I was crazy for the
- 0:08way I dressed. What'd you wear? One white glove covered with Ryan Stars?
- 0:14Four Finger Discount, dude, Welcome to four Finger Discount, where this
- 0:34week we're here to review an episode that's no longer exists. Stuck raving Dad.
- 0:38I'm Dando, and I am the big white guy who thinks he's the
- 0:41little black guy. No, just call me guy. You do like your
- 0:45soul and everything? Now that, yeah? I do. Indeed, what
- 0:48jazz instrument would you play if you were a jazz musician? Because you're a
- 0:51very Miles Davis Askue fan, aren't you? I am so. I like
- 0:53to think I would be a trumpet guy, although a sax guy would not
- 0:57be bad either. DP of pants, that's the question. I was peeing
- 1:00my pants before it was cool? Yeah? Yeah, Wor's we all well?
- 1:04And we'll get you to continue to do so after it stopped for Yeah?
- 1:07Yeah? Yeah. What was the point where you realize I don't care
- 1:11if I'm not cool anymore. I'm waiting way past that now. But there
- 1:14is a point I think it's maybe in your like mid to late twenties where
- 1:17you go, I'm no longer like you go out to a night club.
- 1:19I think it's the first thing to go to a nightclub and you realize these
- 1:23people are like ten years younger than me. I'm the old guy to them.
- 1:26Now, that's where you start going. I give a ship. Yeah,
- 1:29it took a little while beyond the twenties. It was my thirties.
- 1:32Yeah, I think when I because I think when I became a dad,
- 1:34it was for me. I'm a dad now, so it's okay to be
- 1:38uncol when you're a dad, right, Oh I imagine. So yeah,
- 1:41so I don't have kids, so I'm what's your excuse. I'm constantly searching
- 1:46for validation from the young generation. Have I got the Riz kids? I've
- 1:49got the Riz right, and the future is now old man? Yeah,
- 1:53no, no, you're right. Oh yeah, I'd probably be a trumpet
- 1:59player, maybe a saxonist. The Lovely Louise's youngest son, musical prodigy Felix,
- 2:04recently got his own saxophone over the weekend. He was very happy with
- 2:07It's got inscriptions on it and up here hearing his infernal tootling on it.
- 2:13I was like, oh man, I mean I wish I was more musical.
- 2:16I mean, I clearly have a lovely singing voice. As listeners of
- 2:19the podcast will know, that was a juke FIV see tune. There's plenty
- 2:25of them. But no, I think I I like, I like the
- 2:32idea of a trump but it just seems like a small compact instrument. You
- 2:36know, you're not having to lug a whole. But you mean you a
- 2:38tuba player, Nicholas A saxophonist. Is that a saxophonist? Saxophone saxophonist,
- 2:43saxophonists. Yeah, she's writer. Remember she's great at it. Yeah,
- 2:46she plays a lion because when she was the first thing she learned was to
- 2:47play the Lion king songs on the saxophone. Yeah, she created it,
- 2:52so you'll you'll get the occasional hakuna matata. Yeah. Wow, she's very
- 2:54musical. Nicola, very very very talented. My wife, as is your
- 2:58your lovely Louise your part, Well, her great talent was finding a good
- 3:01boyfriend. Now you know who was very talented and still is is the Al
- 3:07Jean, the Simpsons showrunner. Look you're about to say, Michael Jackson's like,
- 3:10is there something you know that? And Mike Reese, who took over
- 3:15from the show at the beginning of season three. This was their first episode
- 3:17that went to air. They people fans of The Simpsons say that the Golden
- 3:23Era started with this episode with season three. However, unfortunately, after they
- 3:28is of Finding Neverland, the documentary they came out a few years ago.
- 3:30I think that's what it's called, maybe Leaving Leaving Neverland, the movie is
- 3:34Finding It, that's right, Leaving Neverland came out, and all the allegations
- 3:37that Michael Jackson with you know, we've all we all know that the details
- 3:40which had been circulating for a fair while before that documentary came out before these
- 3:46two young men in particular went on the record. Yeah, there's a reason
- 3:50they called him wacko Jacko, right, and then Al Jean I'm sure Mike
- 3:53Reese as well, but Al Jean's one went on the recorder saying, we
- 3:57took this out of circulation. This episode no longer available on streaming or on
- 4:02free to air what you call it our syndication, Yeah, because we or
- 4:05he believes that Michael Jackson used this episode to groom kids and when I had
- 4:10never seen this until you sent it to me in preparation for this episode.
- 4:12I never thought about it that way. I've always seen it as a bit
- 4:14of a tragedy that this episode has been taken off the air because of it
- 4:17felt like a snap judgment. All this documentary is coming out, we don't
- 4:20want to be affiliated with it. Let's pull the episode. We don't want
- 4:23the Simpsons to be thrown in like Michael Jackson was once on The Simpsons.
- 4:26Let's quick, let's pull it away from circulation. He has gone on the
- 4:30record it was worth the Daily Beast, the interview al Jean where he says,
- 4:32I have no proof, it's just my gut feeling that he would have
- 4:35used this to groom kids. I'm not saying he's right or wrong. It's
- 4:40still a shame to we've lost the episode, but I can understand now why
- 4:42it no longer exists because the guy who created it feels dirty. Oh yeah,
- 4:46it feels complicit, and it's a shame that that happened. I was
- 4:49surprised there's anyone to read that piece. By all that interview with Algene,
- 4:54I hadn't really heard about it until I'll just the link for the interview in
- 4:58the description of this because it's not all about that, but they use that
- 5:00as the headline. Let's hook you in with this, that's right. I
- 5:02think the reporter who did it it is a bit of a Marck breaker.
- 5:04And yes, I'm not a huge fan, but yeah, the gist of
- 5:10that article is about season three and about the sort of the birth of the
- 5:13Golden age of the Simpsons. Yeah, but this is certainly comes up.
- 5:15And Algae is not the only guy to talk about it. I mean James
- 5:18L. Brooks has also gone on the record and saying, look, I'm
- 5:23not for book burning, I'm not for censorship, but I think of it
- 5:26as this is our book. I created it, and we're entitled to take
- 5:29a chapter out of it if we choose to do so. Clear they chose
- 5:32to do so. Now there's still a means to get access to the episode.
- 5:36I'm holding up here, as you'll see, if you're watching this show
- 5:40right now, hold up to the camera the season three box set. And
- 5:43it was so lovely to pull out the box set. It felt like,
- 5:45and I know all the othergations that are going around. I understand why it's
- 5:46to the episode off, but it was so nice putting this episode, and
- 5:48I think I've watched it for ten fifteen years. It was like seeing an
- 5:53old friend, as weird as that may sound, because it's got the whole
- 5:56MJA sort of taint to it now, but I just went, oh,
- 5:59it's write this episod, So it's like rediscovering it again. I hadn't watched
- 6:01it for so long, and it's just a shame that, Like, for
- 6:04example, Alliott now he started watching The Simpsons a bit bit more often,
- 6:08younger generations now won't really know the episode exist unless their parents say this one
- 6:13exists too. Then it might be incumbent on parents and say, oh,
- 6:15they may say why can't I see it on Disney Plus or why can't I
- 6:19see it? And by any other means, and then you've got to but
- 6:21then you've got all the other They put a little stinger at the start of
- 6:25a Laddin and things like that, saying that doesn't reflect us. But I
- 6:28guess there's nothing in the episode that reflects poorly. As how the episode they
- 6:32he al Jean and James Brooks feel it might have been used. That's why
- 6:36they've taken it down. So it's a different Yeah, that's right. I
- 6:39mean, there's no sort of retrograde racism, no tobacco depictions, seeing a
- 6:45lot of a lot of tobacco depictions in front of recent episodes of certain things.
- 6:50I don't have the box set that you do. I had to obtain
- 6:54my copy of Star Graving dad By. Well let's say it rhymes with Birasy.
- 6:58Well there's a guy. I can't remember who it was, but could
- 7:01I posted about it on our Twitter at four finger pot if you want to
- 7:03follow us on Twitter because you can't follow us on Facebook anymore. This is
- 7:09still happening at four figure discount on Instagram as well. And we're gonna get
- 7:12into TikTok happening at four finger discount on TikTok's well, that's all right,
- 7:15there's a we're ticking now. We're talking fifty something year old man on TikTok.
- 7:18That's what the kids are tuning, ol Gene, we'll not be watching
- 7:24what was I? He put the full episode on Twitter because Twitter is this
- 7:27is a free for all now, there's no copyright, there's nothing, so
- 7:30you can watch it for a friend on Twitter. If you just said a
- 7:31lot of things are coming up on Twitter it's like, you'll see this posting.
- 7:35Oh fuck it, here's the full movie of such and such. It
- 7:39just came out, so you know it'll be on pirate bayeah and I'm just
- 7:43uploaded to Twitter hang around forever. It's crazy. Here's the whole movie of
- 7:46the flash. I'm like, I've got no desire to watch this, but
- 7:49what it's there? Yeah, daddy, elon, you're not taking it down.
- 7:53What's going on? Freedom of speech, baby, that's true. Piracy
- 7:59be star grabbing. Dad. Do you think it's sad that it's been removed
- 8:01from circulation. It's sad, but it's understandable. I think it's probably the
- 8:03best way to put it right. Going back to what mister Brooks said.
- 8:07You look, they wrote the book they're in told to take a chapter out
- 8:09of it. I think for a show that is ostensibly a family show,
- 8:16yeah, it may raise too many awkward questions. And I understand where el
- 8:24Gene is coming from as well in that feeling and complicity that they may have
- 8:26had something to do with the grooming of children. Yeh, the grooming of
- 8:31children. And you don't want your name attached to that, I mean,
- 8:33you just it would give you the ick but I had never heard anybody throw
- 8:39that out there until he pitched that. So if he had never said that,
- 8:43would you have ever assumed that, would you ever have gone, you
- 8:46know what? He might have used this to groomed children. Was that mentioned
- 8:48in the doco? I don't think it was. Was it? I don't
- 8:50think so. No, I mean I can recall anyway. No, No,
- 8:54I mean I remember watching the Neverland documentary when it came out. I
- 8:58wrote a piece about it for or for the Music magazine when I was doing
- 9:01my column for that didn't sound of like a debunk. I was saying they
- 9:05met at a certain place, and that place wasn't built at the time in
- 9:07which they said it was going to be there or something. I think you
- 9:09had a lot of amateur sleuths going, well, this doesn't add up,
- 9:13and this doesn't scan. There's no wind on the moon. It really felt
- 9:16like grasping its straws in a lot of ways. I'm kind of inclined to
- 9:22take certain allegations and certain accusations with a bit of a grain of salt and
- 9:28until I get as much evidence as possible. Watching the evidence of these two
- 9:33about to say young men, I mean they're still relatively young. I guess
- 9:37when they were being interviewed for this docer, it's like, I'm one hundred
- 9:39percent buying this. You can't, Well, you weren't there, so you
- 9:41can't. Yeah. But these particular recollections and the way they expressed themselves,
- 9:50the way they what they recollected, how they how they expressed that precise.
- 9:54This feels very very precise, very authentic, very authentic. It very lived
- 9:58in. Yeah. So this interview where he said about the glooming of children
- 10:03was twenty nineteen. I don't think he'd said it beforehand, because when did
- 10:05the docco come out Finding Neverland or Leaving Neverland? Sorry, hold to be
- 10:09sometime in the I want to say, maybe twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen,
- 10:13Leaving Neverland twenty nights. It was the same year, twenty five years ago.
- 10:16I thought it was a lot longer than that. Time keeps on slipping
- 10:18into the future. Man. But there's another point in the interview though,
- 10:22where he the interviewer asks about how Michael Jackson because he wrote the Happy Birthday
- 10:26Lisa's song, great song. I love the song, one of my favorite
- 10:28Simpsons songs. It's a shame that won't get used anymore, heard anymore.
- 10:33But he brings up the do you think there was something to the first kiss
- 10:35from a boy? I'm thinking you're really trying to find something here that's that's
- 10:39great, that's big strung, that's and I think al Jenevan said maybe.
- 10:41I was like, no, no, no, no, no no,
- 10:43that's just it felt like a year ten student trying to like overanalyze a film
- 10:48for an essay. You know, it's he wrote us that it fits the
- 10:52song. He wasn't trying to hide a hidden agender about loving boys in this
- 10:54song. It was just he was. It rhymes with joy, it rhymes
- 10:58with joy, and it's yeah, girls think about their first kiss from a
- 11:01boy in not Anymore. But you know, in nineteen ninety two, what
- 11:07when this air? Yeah? Ever since Katie Perry, it's all about kissing
- 11:09girls. What's going on? Yeah? I don't think Michael Jackson spent hours
- 11:13and hours coming up with the lyrics to Happy Birthday Lisa. I'm pretty sure
- 11:16this was sort of dashed up on the back of the napkin. It felt
- 11:18like it didn't really, but that was the charm to it, because that's
- 11:20what was supposed to have been sure, I guess up or not writing it,
- 11:24but anyway, Yeah, But overall though, I really enjoyed going back
- 11:28and revisiting this episode. There's a lot that goes into the behind the scenes
- 11:31of it. It's really really interesting. So Matt Granning says that he was
- 11:35working back late at the office one night, which I'm sure I believe that
- 11:39back Granny been the end of one back up the office working the way.
- 11:41But anyway, so he says, and the phone rings, and it's Michael
- 11:45Jackson saying I'd love to be a guest on the show. First of all,
- 11:48I'm not sure Michael Jackson would just call up, but you know,
- 11:50he says, that's what happened. It makes for a good story, and
- 11:54that he wanted to be a guest and took me about a minute before he
- 11:56actually believed him, which is what they did in the show with Bart refusing
- 11:58to leave Leon until after about a minute or so. Absolutely, but yeah,
- 12:05Michael Jackson calling up in the middle of the night. Can I be
- 12:07speaking Mad Green? I'm a big fan of Simpsons. Yeah, I'm not
- 12:13sure I buy that, but that's the story they're going with. Anyway.
- 12:15Have you watched that documentary about the making of We Other World. It's on
- 12:18Netflix at the moment. I've seen clips of it. There was like three
- 12:20weeks of negotiations and phone calls and contracts and all this kind of stuff to
- 12:26actually get that going on. I doubt very much that Michael Jackson, as
- 12:30you said, is calling up at the middle of the night give me the
- 12:33number for the Simpsons HQ the Rat's Room. My apologies to anyone who's a
- 12:41big MJ fan me doing this god awful impersonation. Later on I to do
- 12:45prints, but yeah, it strikes me as very print the legend that Matt
- 12:52Granning would say, first of all, I was working late in the office
- 12:56one night. No, not happening. Secondly, then it's Michael Jackson.
- 13:01He's like, no, it's not happening. But let's cut out all the
- 13:05did asking who his last four dates of the Grammys were the one as well,
- 13:11So okay, we've got mutually issued distraction. But he did apparently he
- 13:15did say to Matt that or one of the one of the workers that he
- 13:18wants to give bart a number one single. So he wrote, do the
- 13:20Bartman. Really, Michael Jackson won't do the butt man. I didn't know
- 13:24that. Really, I did not know that. Yeah, yep, he
- 13:26did. He is the He is the writer of Everybody you can do the
- 13:30Bartman. That was Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson, I'm on that bit from
- 13:35south Park now, I know we touched him. Children. It's Michael Jackson,
- 13:39a taxon, It's Michael Jackson. If you if you enjoy south Park,
- 13:43check out out going down to south Park podcast and all your good podcast
- 13:46platforms. But apparently his conditions were he couldn't sing. He could do the
- 13:52spoken dialogue, but for some legal reasons, he could do the singing.
- 13:54But they said when they did the first run through, he did sing the
- 13:58songs and did everything, and they there's a there's a rumor going around that
- 14:03he recorded his versions of Happy Birthday Lisa and all the other songs like Ben
- 14:07when he sings Home, and at the last minute they were replaced with the
- 14:11mj Ones. So we'll never know because they had Kick Lemon as the impersonate
- 14:15answer. But apparently the sound guy has said no, no, that that
- 14:18never happened. I was like, go with that man, Why ruined that
- 14:22dream? Everybody? Just let's get our story straight. Yeah, yeah,
- 14:26don't don't ruin this legend. You know, just if the legend was that
- 14:31Michael Jackson wasn't allowed to at the last minute, he slipped it in the
- 14:33last second, that make him cool? Are we glad to say that he
- 14:37was he was talented as a musician. Yeah, it's just it's weird.
- 14:41It's weird as it been long enough. Now we can sort of talk about
- 14:43him as a as a talent. Or Yeah, this is something we were
- 14:46talking about the other day, wasn't it, because we started talking about various
- 14:48canceled individuals. Yeah, and how Yeah, sadly, there are a lot
- 14:54out there who were very, very good at what they did. This is
- 14:56probably why they were able to reach positions of influence or power where either they
- 15:03were able to commit misdeeds or their misdeeds could be swept under the rug.
- 15:07Yeah. I mean a lot of people who are now regarded as monsters being
- 15:11punished for their crimes were actually pretty good at what they did. Or it's
- 15:16a I think we're talking sations. We were talking about the people who are
- 15:20associated with them. So for example, people saying we can't watch that movie
- 15:22anymore, but what about all the people that were working on that film who
- 15:26put their blood, sweat and tears into their role or behind the camera or
- 15:30whatever it was of writing the movie. Now all their hard work is forgotten
- 15:31about because of one individual. It's it's a weird thing to it really is.
- 15:35Yeah, I'm not a fan of a cancelation for that. For that
- 15:39reason, It's like, I don't hire them going forward, but let's not
- 15:43cancel everything that they were in previously, because that means everyone else who worked
- 15:46on that project as well vantalized. That's right, yeah, as have we.
- 15:52I think someone with the magnitude of talent and influence and I guess reach
- 15:56that Michael Jackson had is never going to be holy forgotten and there's always going
- 16:00to be an asterisk next to their name. It's like Thriller, you know,
- 16:03biggest album of the nineteen eighties, Michael Jackson, you know, incredible
- 16:08run of Grammy Wins and all this kind of business. Also accused of Mollestone
- 16:12Couch. I did love the story of they did the run through at Michael
- 16:18Jackson's manager's house, and so they said the first thing they've been through is
- 16:22to Michael Jackson. The second time they were there, to a lot record
- 16:23or whatever, on the second run through, and his other guy just walks
- 16:26in, Kip Lemon. It's sings of songs and I didn't tell the sims
- 16:29of stuff that was gonna happen. That was sort of going it is where
- 16:30you sing, and Michael Jackson just sat there silently, and this Kip leman
- 16:33just bought into the room as I was singing the songs, and they're like,
- 16:37this is weird, what's going on here? I would appreciate their heads
- 16:41up on this one, Mike. Apparently Dave caslen Netta was twenty minutes late
- 16:44to it as well. Oh boy, which doesn't help. No, but
- 16:49yeah, I would have loved if he if he's even if his versions were
- 16:52available somewhere, I'd love to hear him singing the Lissa in It's such a
- 16:56happy song, you know it is. It is very nice. I think
- 17:00when you got to when you've got a sister, I got a sister,
- 17:03you want them to be happy. I do. Having said this, bitches,
- 17:07no, no, my beloved sister Margot, who probably does not listen
- 17:11to this podcast, I missed your birthday, Margo. You missed it.
- 17:14I did. It was Saturday and I still haven't gotten in touch. I'm
- 17:17sorry, my mom, Are you serious? You've realized you forgotten? So
- 17:21are you just scared to get in touch now? Or what do you do?
- 17:22Is it a case of your trying to think of a present. It's
- 17:26like memento I'm remembering every twenty minutes. That's like call Margot. And I
- 17:30was like, but I've got other stuff to do. I've got to record
- 17:32this podcast. I've got other stuff to do. Well, I know,
- 17:34as soon as we're done here, I'll be calling Margot. She's just sitting
- 17:37there. Happy birthday, Margo. She's just sit at the kitchen table the
- 17:41party had on Happy Birthday, gotten a bit of charm. My mom came
- 17:48by the other day and said, now, were you sick on the weekend?
- 17:51I said, no, no, lose had COVID. But now i'm
- 17:52more aker because you missed Margot's birthday. You didn't call Margot. I'm like,
- 17:56she must have complained to Margaret. Mary's mum was probably like, how
- 18:00did you hear? Remember? What did I get you? Yeah? Well
- 18:03you took her presence? No not really, really, you're a shit brother.
- 18:07Get me presents? Really? No? No, we're just more like,
- 18:11have a call, send a card, milestone birthdays cards are insulting to
- 18:15me. I'm not a fan of greeting cards and birthday cards when you're a
- 18:18little kid, so be it. But I don't know, just a waste
- 18:22of money. You can just write that message. Do you kick the cards?
- 18:27Not all? No, I don't know. Just nick Nickola is my
- 18:30wife for you viewers and listeners, a huge fan of the card. If
- 18:33I don't get her a card, she's really really sad. I've just never
- 18:37cared. I just I just feel I'm spend an extra five bucks on my
- 18:40present. Please, I don't want a card. I wholly understand where you're
- 18:42coming from. I mean, I'm not necessarily someone who's like you forgot my
- 18:48birthday or where's my card? Or where's my friends? This may and this
- 18:51will lead into something I want to talk about in just a sec. But
- 18:53I do feel bad that I haven't contacted her at the very least. I
- 18:56mean, I think we're we will reach the stage because I mean, I'm
- 19:00the youngest and I'm in my fifty As as long as you feel bad,
- 19:02that's all matters. That is all that about. Now here's what I wanted
- 19:04to talk about with this with this episode. One thing that I didn't really
- 19:08like. I don't like people putting pressure on someone to celebrate their birthday.
- 19:14I thought the same as well. I get that Lisa has been forgotten time
- 19:18and time again by Bart, but it just felt a bit much of going,
- 19:22well, I'm discerning you now you're no longer my brother. It felt
- 19:25a bit over the I get it, she's eight, I've got I've wrote
- 19:26my notes. I understand she's over dramatic. She's eight years old, so
- 19:30you can understand an eight year old wild feel this way. If an eight
- 19:32year old had their birthday forgotten, you can imagine they would respond this way.
- 19:34But I didn't feel like you're pushing it. It's like I never got
- 19:37my sister or present. When I was ten. My parents got a present
- 19:41for my sister. I helped to pick it out or whatever, but expecting
- 19:44Bart to get her a present. But I guess she only wanted one,
- 19:45even it was just made, but she just didn't really want He didn't want
- 19:48to give her a present. Yeah, I'd realize that it has to happen
- 19:52for the events of the story to unravel as they do. Unfold as they
- 19:56do. It's also if they had nothing to do, nothing for it to
- 19:59do. That's right, Yeah, that's right. So for her to be
- 20:03constantly pushing and almost committing this emotional blackmail, when did you shut up?
- 20:07Put a lot of shit going on your Mark Jackson coming to the house.
- 20:11But did margin Homer forget as well? I don't think they did. We
- 20:15never see them give her a present. I'm trying. I'm trying to remember
- 20:18the timeline of this episode, or when is her actual birthday? It's when,
- 20:22it's not when they it's when Leon shows up. I think, well,
- 20:25it must be when he shows up. It's not the morning they sing
- 20:29the song. That's that's late, isn't it. Yeah, that's right.
- 20:30So the morning of the following day or something. I can't recall. I
- 20:33just know she's sitting at the at the kitchen table crying. My favorite what
- 20:38are you favorite moments in the episode? I think they were more Homer related
- 20:41than anything else. I've only eve betten one here because obviously was just entralled
- 20:45with the episode. But I just love that. That's one of my favorite
- 20:48gifts of all time. I did enjoy Homer watching funny his own video.
- 20:53Yeah, don't gone Fire, Don't go fire, cracky up at doc fire,
- 20:57look at him like the dog on fire. But that was there was
- 21:02once upon a time when a funny Stone videos was a thing, don't I
- 21:06know it? Yeah it is a still kind of magic because now it's just
- 21:08vile clips on the internet. But he used to be in Australia. Sit
- 21:12down seven thirty on a Tuesday and you need to watch Australia's funny Stowe video.
- 21:15You will be told Australia, Australia, this is you, this is
- 21:19you. That's right. Yeah, and look at him and he'd be so
- 21:22tough if like your favorite one. It's like they want a car at the
- 21:26end of the year. It's like, hey, kid fell out to fight
- 21:27the stairs. You were a car. We're bringing back. We're bringing back
- 21:32this season's champions. Remember kid who fell downstairs? Fat guy on waters slag.
- 21:40So I like that very much. I loved I loved home. At
- 21:42the end, Michael Jackson aka Leon has made his impassioned speech about you know
- 21:49who can see who's crazy or not not me. I got this. He's
- 21:53got his very proud that he's not crazy. I love the stamp as well.
- 22:00The revelation of the reveal of Homer's test results and he gets dragged off.
- 22:07There's cavil Man, he wears his pants. Then another great callback to
- 22:12Bart, isn't it? And the one thing a line that I'd always remember
- 22:18but I've forgotten, was from this episode. Well, I think it's Kennie.
- 22:22Don't be sure your face around here again? Your tool? That was
- 22:25Nelson? Was that Nelson? Yeah? When they realized that MJ Isn't had
- 22:30a different maybe sort of pitch of voice. Okay, I'm pretty sure it
- 22:33was Nelson. I could be wrong. Yeah, yeah, one of the
- 22:34bound here again, your tool? I think it was Kenney, an established
- 22:40bully at this point. I'm pretty sure the three bullies were Jimbo, Dolph
- 22:44and Nelson. Could be could well be Nelson, Yeah, it could be
- 22:48wrong. What else did you enjoy? Yeah? Yeah, this had the
- 22:49one worries? Shall we do some Well, we've got some stone cutters to

- 25:00you there eating the bast trivia questions. Mister Dames, it's time for some
- 25:03trivia. What's your first question? Oh, I'm going to go first.
- 25:06You are please recite to me the crusty hotline number one nine zero nine is
- 25:14zero nine? Oh, you clown, mrrect I'm pretending I didn't know,
- 25:18but that's my first question. My first question then, for you is what
- 25:23does the sign at the new Bedlam Mental Asylum say. There's a sign on
- 25:29the wall and they're walking in m It says you have to be You don't
- 25:33have to be crazy to be committed, but that helps. Yes. In
- 25:38Lisa's poem, what kind of car hit Snowball? Chrysler? It was a
- 25:42Chrysler? I forgot that was in this episode. She lies, lies,
- 25:48she died, No deal? So is it he lied, he lied,
- 25:56she died, she died, she died, she died. You know the
- 25:59answer this one, but read it out for me. The four Dates,
- 26:02Brooke Shields, Diana ros Emmanuel Lewis aka Webster and Bubbles and Bubbles the monkey?
- 26:07Was he just the monkey the chimp? So did he just have a
- 26:11chimp follow him around? Like mister teeny? What was the deal with Bubbles?
- 26:12I've heard of Bubbles, but I wasn't old enough to sort of live
- 26:15through it. Yeah, I don't know if Bubbles accompanied MJ everywhere, But
- 26:21did you have him out in public? This monkey? I think if you
- 26:25went to Neverland, yeah, you would invary it with. You would invariably
- 26:33meet and probably interact with Bubbles. Just comes across like a guy who had
- 26:37so much money that he just did not to do with it anymore. And
- 26:41he was just what was his case of he was trying to create a youth
- 26:45that he never got to live. That seemed to be the thing, wasn't
- 26:47it. That seemed to be the armchair psychologist opinion, because he had a
- 26:49shit upbringing. You had all the money in the world, Yeah, but
- 26:53he was You know that they're making this buyer pic about Michael Jackson right now,
- 26:59just called Michael an apparent. Of course it is sly starring like his
- 27:08nephew or something like that as young Michael. And so when's it says that
- 27:12his whole life? I think it's I think it's his whole life. But
- 27:15it's one of those ones like straight out of Compton or where the Jackson family
- 27:22is Like the executive producer, it's like, Okay, you've got the rights
- 27:25that we're going to rewrite history of everybody pretty much. Yeah, we've got
- 27:27the rights that we'll give you the rights of the songs, but in return,
- 27:30you're gonna have to whitewash some of this less savory stuff baps or just
- 27:34you'll allude to it, but you know, for the sake of like being
- 27:38upfront and honest. Which is weird because I felt they did the opposite for
- 27:41the Freddie Mercury Behemi Raapsody film. They made it come across so much worse
- 27:45than what he actually was. Like the band split up and he wouldn't get
- 27:48back together, and they want to do live aid and he did, and
- 27:51I'm thinking, none of this happened. Why do you fabricated such bullshit?
- 27:55Yeah? I don't know. I mean, I watched Bohemian Rhapsody once and
- 27:56I'm like, I've got no desire to ever see this. So many people
- 28:00say to me. I've had people say to me, oh, it's such
- 28:02a great story. It's such a good film. I didn't realize that happened.
- 28:03I was like, it didn't happen. Though, none of this happened.
- 28:07It's just I understand writer's license, but I don't know, just maybe
- 28:11I watched it going Freddie Mercury comes across a real douchebag. Don't you feel
- 28:15that he came across a bit of a douche threat a good portion of the
- 28:17last half of that movie. I don't really recall that much of it in
- 28:21Unstein, just it was a lot of this huge craze for about six months.
- 28:22Wasn't he won? What did he win the Academy Award for it?
- 28:25He did? Yeah? I mean I like me Malick as an actor,
- 28:27but it was badwagon. Yeah, b Timezone because we all love queen songs.
- 28:33Correct, Yeah, I'll all follow a question for you, Daly Lama
- 28:36visited when nineteen fifty two one of your questions, correct, were just coming
- 28:40to each other question? Indeed? Indeed? But might I ask you one
- 28:41more? Yeah? What is Leon Kompowski's hometown? Brooklyn Patterson, NW Jewey
- 28:48Patterson, New Joysey. Alrighty, So the original air date of Stark Graving
- 28:52Dad was September nineteenth, nineteen ninety one, production Code seven F two four,
- 28:56written by al Jeina, Mike Reese and directed by Rich More. The
- 29:02episode we do have the chop ball gag as well, so we do season
- 29:04eighteen reviews and there's no chalk gag and like kind of stuff. But the
- 29:07chop boy gag, I am not a dentist. And the couch gag,
- 29:10the couch tips over backwards, sending the Simpsons family through the wall. That's
- 29:14just a fairly old school, not elaborate couch gag. It's just like,
- 29:18and something happens. Yeah, yeah, even just the cauch gags like this.
- 29:22Yeah, they take me back because when you do season eighteen, it
- 29:25just doesn't feel the same. Never. The episode kicks off with Lisa waking
- 29:29up Bart, which is what he does at the end of the the episode.
- 29:32She wakes up at six am. Something's happened. Dad died, and
- 29:34he's actually don't believe he's actually relieved. Believe. Yeah, but it's almost
- 29:38Lisa's birthday and she's worried about becoming double digits and as Bart says, you
- 29:41know, that's when your legs start to go. And Kenny doesn't taste as
- 29:44good anymore, and he's always She says that he's always disappointed her, and
- 29:51he finally gives in and says that he will get her a present. And
- 29:52I do agree. It's just the pressure to be given a present felt un
- 29:56Lisa, Like it did, didn't it. H Yeah, she seems like
- 30:00someone who should be I don't need physical objects. Make a donation to Peter.
- 30:06Peter feed the starving child. But Marge asked Bart in the kitchen to
- 30:11watch Maggie while she goes and gets some laundry. He calls a crusty hotline.
- 30:14Doesn't pay an attention if you haven't asked your parents. Nerdy, nerdy,
- 30:18but Chirsty forgives you. By the way, how long was the how
- 30:21much for the first minute, and how much read traditional metals? Two dollars
- 30:22for the first and fifty cents after. I'm pretty sure there's no beating you.
- 30:26No, no, it's photographic memory. But the thing is, it
- 30:30took me back. I've got my notes here. Hot lines take me back.
- 30:33Remember when hot lines for me it was cheats for video games. You
- 30:37call this hot line for five dollars a minute. We can tell you how
- 30:40to enter this combo for Eddie Gordo on Teke and three Did you ever go
- 30:42up any hot lines and things like that? For me? It was phone
- 30:45sex? Okay, yeah, I still do that. Does phone sex still
- 30:48exist? I'm not sure it does. I guess it must. I'm sure
- 30:52there's like an app for it or something, but I can't imagine there's one
- 30:56nine hundred call me call me now, I always say, and they call
- 31:00me now, we're waiting for your cool. That was probably like some seventy
- 31:03year old. She just got a really hard voice. That's right. Yeah,
- 31:08what are you wearing? Oh? Hotlines? But you know, Crush
- 31:15just laughs at the entire time, makes his money call back tomorrow, and
- 31:18then Maggie grabs the fan. Not I like podcasts, No, Marge makes
- 31:21the fan. Marge walks in Caesar she ever powered me? Then have an
- 31:23easy shirt for work, and unfortunately they're all pink. And it's also Bart's
- 31:26fault with the lucky red hat. Indeed, quick question, did Homer always
- 31:30have that hairy chest? It was always been curly. Yeah, yeah,
- 31:34I just never picked up on it. No, this is the first time
- 31:37I thought was just like smooth chest days or in the early days. Anyway,
- 31:42you always had the curly hairs on his chest. Yeah. I don't
- 31:45remember seeing this episode, but that's what he usually looks like anyway. But
- 31:48I love the line here of I'm not popular enough to be different. That's
- 31:52so true in many aspects. When you're growing up, you just I can't
- 31:55be different. Only the cool kids can be quirky. Have you ever worn
- 31:57a pink shirt? I own several pink shirts, but purple. Do you
- 32:01recall the first time that, I mean, was there ever any sort of
- 32:04trepidation about the first time you put one on? I remember the first time
- 32:07I wore it out to a nightclub, and I was very anxious, but
- 32:13I thought I looked good. But I thought, if someone comments on this,
- 32:16it's going to break me. I'm going to go home straight up.
- 32:19And yes, but straight away. I remember these two girls, Emily I
- 32:22always say, last Nights is the last name? Emily and Kate? How
- 32:25wish Emily and Kate said, oh, nice shirt. I remember I first
- 32:29thinking are they taking the mickey? It's genuine? And then I realized they
- 32:35weren't. I won't explained how when they ripped it off my buddy. Yeah,
- 32:39but then I realized I know it's okay, and it was because even
- 32:42fifteen years ago, wear a pink shirt was now it's whatever. You wear
- 32:46no shirt to a nightclub, but you feel like you look good, but
- 32:50you're scared to see what people or other people think. That's cool when you
- 32:52should't. You should feel I you feel comfortable, you should just wear it.
- 32:54It depends on your coloring as well, I mean share the pink.
- 32:58Yeah. All the lovely Louise often told me, it's like, colour is
- 33:01not really you it color? Is that anything that's like anything that's not black
- 33:06pretty much anything outside black, black, gray or blue? No, Because
- 33:12I mean, I'm I am kind of partial to purple. I don't I
- 33:15think it's I like wearing it not not necessarily an all purple apbit. I'm
- 33:22not prince. That was Michael Jackson. What am I talking about? But
- 33:27we have the Prince a little bit later in the show. We will.
- 33:28Indeed, I recall we were at some shop and I was like, Oh,
- 33:30I really like this Polis shirt. In this column. I don't know
- 33:32how many times I've told you this is not your color. It does not
- 33:36suit your personal coloring, is it? But is it that she doesn't think
- 33:38you look good in it? Or is it that most people will think her
- 33:43opinion is the only one that matters. Yeah, most people try to look
- 33:45good for my person actio. Yes, that is correct, and it's yourself.
- 33:49Guy, David, you feel you look good in purple? We're damn
- 33:51purple. I will, you'll buy your purple shirt for your birthday. I've
- 33:54got a Wayne's World shirt that's purple, and I've had it since I reckon
- 33:59I was seventeen. Still fits me. It's one of those shirts where I
- 34:01judge whether I need to lose some weight. I put the shirt on too
- 34:04tight. I need to lose a bit of weight. I've told you we've
- 34:07talked about the aspirational shirt. Yeah, yeah, might fit into mine now,
- 34:10Oh really yeah, that's one. So I put it on a couple
- 34:13of weeks ago. I would pick up Alien. I thought still got it,
- 34:15baby, I'd still got it, and I referred to my gut.
- 34:21No, you're looking great, looking, looking really really good. So yes,
- 34:24So basically, Homer's shirt is now pink. It's all over. March,
- 34:27It's all over. And then he's revealed here that as Bart's hat,
- 34:31as we said, March is no one's going to notice. I really like
- 34:34the scene the shot here of him walking in all the workers all wearing white
- 34:37and he's wearing the pink and burns. Is not a fan of it at
- 34:38all? Is he some sort of free thinking anarchist. It's one of your
- 34:42boobs from sect to seven g yes, and these color monitors are peete for
- 34:45themselves. Then Lenny gives Homer a pink frosting donut and hang and shit,
- 34:50and you can imagine this is what it would happen in a factory. Oh
- 34:53yeah, wearing a pink shirt not cool. It doesn't make him a pink
- 34:57donut either, No, no, but he does like it though. He
- 34:59does love pink frost pink. Are you a chocolate donut or a pink donut?
- 35:01I was alway chocolate as a kid. I'm pink all the way now.
- 35:02I think I would be a pink donut. Yeah. Maybe it's the
- 35:06Simpsons influence. I don't know, but I prefer when it comes to sweets,
- 35:08strawberry pink is over chocolate. Ending out the week for me. Having
- 35:13said that, a combination of the two is very nice. I mean,
- 35:15did you ever I think are American friends called bis quick, but we call
- 35:19it quick oh quick, yeah, yeah, you combine the two flavors,
- 35:22I can bind chocolate and strawberry. Was that amazing? It's pretty damn Did
- 35:25you ever get banana? Bananna was like the one that you go got if
- 35:28if everyone else is running out. This is what I'm about to say.
- 35:30I'm very partial to banana flavoring. I think you might have said that you're
- 35:34you're the kid that liked the weird things, because no one ate banana.
- 35:36Quick he went to your friend's house. The bananas a banana or banana big
- 35:39m Yeah no, yeah. And I was at the the n QR.
- 35:46I went there with Alliott maybe three days ago. He was in heaven.
- 35:50He walked in, he goes, look at all these lullies, look at
- 35:52all these lolo prices. Well, we would have gone to the same n
- 35:58QR. It's just around the corner from Dando's pad if you do live around
- 36:00here. They've got three dollar limp bunnies, which are perfect for Easter time.
- 36:04That is correct. Friend of the pot. The other thing they had
- 36:07though, And while I'm trying to be on something in their healthcare, this
- 36:12is too good to pass it because it's not something that you often see in
- 36:15Australia. And even beyond that, it's kind of like a added affordable price.
- 36:20It's a variant of I love when they get the US of variants and
- 36:22shit, yeah it was banana flavored Twinkies. I still wouldn't eat it,
- 36:28but I can imagine you would have loved it. I bought the box,
- 36:30the whole box. Yeah, yeah, well they went certain an individually.
- 36:34Okay, yeah, you had to get a box of ten. I'm like,
- 36:37you feel like an absolute boss when you just drop the box on the
- 36:38cannon too. You're like, all of them, give it to me,
- 36:43Give it to me, because Nicholas, she loves these protein bars and it
- 36:45usually cost six dollars each. Right at the supermarket, they've got it for
- 36:49a dollar fifty each. What I bought three boxes of them? What dollar
- 36:52fifty? They all went out date like six months ago, but it's still
- 36:55a dollar fifty. There's I think barely is the difference between the best before
- 37:00date and the used by use by. Don't go past that best before Yeah,
- 37:05that's fine. Just blow it a bit and be fine by stuff.
- 37:07When you chuck with the scraped little white bits off it lou was cleaning out
- 37:10of her cupboards not long ago. I think I might have told this story,
- 37:14and you know, you double up on various things like oh, I'm
- 37:16out of so and so. Well, oh, wait a minute, there
- 37:17were actually three bottles way back in the cupboard. We're cleaning out of the
- 37:21cupboard, and there was I think we did like maybe four, four or
- 37:24five big garbage bags of this like this past is to use by date or
- 37:28whatever, and there was some where it's like I think that's the best before
- 37:31I'm trying it out and said, well, man, maybe i'll take that
- 37:34back tonight. It took like a big bag of stuff that had best before
- 37:38or was just past its use by data like oh users the next couple of
- 37:42days she was looking at me like I was some kind of freak. I
- 37:45had a good memory as you were talking. Then, I've very rarely seen
- 37:46my mum drunk. It was just speaking of things sort of like in the
- 37:49back of a closet. And my mom used to have this is it port
- 37:53like port? Oh yeah, but it was a Geelong Cat's football one right
- 37:57that she got just as a present for I was born, right, someone
- 38:00said, and I said, when the Cat's win the flag. You can
- 38:01drink this, right, And of course the Gelong Cats in the AFL here
- 38:05we're in the eighty nine, ninety two, ninety four, ninety five Grand
- 38:08Final. I never won them, so it just sat and used to sit
- 38:10on the on the bench at our house for years, decades, right,
- 38:14and I'm never for getting two thousand and seven when the Cats won the Grand
- 38:16Final and I said, Mom, you can drink that port now. And
- 38:20to see Mum get drunk on his port was just like such a great many
- 38:22was like Mom's finally finally gets to drink his port, Like nineteen years later,
- 38:28she's finally drinking his port. Yeah, dear port, I can't drink
- 38:30it anymore. I got absolutely shit faced on it, like New's Eve around
- 38:37maybe nineteen eighty nine or something, and maybe it was the same same batch.
- 38:40It could Oh I forgot where I was, but it was at like
- 38:45some event. There were like little shot glasses of port, you know,
- 38:47because you don't have it in big glasses. You have it like it's a
- 38:50minded little bits of it. And I had like maybe six or seven maybe
- 38:54more. Mom had a Sharon size drinking it, and I just got I
- 39:00I ended up ushering in the new year, out in the garden, just
- 39:02puking my guts out. Don't let mom seem pretty much. I have not
- 39:07drunk port since. Okay, let's go pinky. You don't understand my son
- 39:15just threw his red head and with the white laundry spear me the tire semantics
- 39:21of the Simpson family take him away. You know, mister Burns, his
- 39:23body cavities are to reveal nothing, and we must have actuated him one hundred
- 39:27times. Maybe he's telling the truth. Well, perhaps you toured in Coots
- 39:30Smith. There's anything to recall. You had a pension for Bill Bedham trousers
- 39:35back in seventy nine, sir, that was my costume from the plant.
- 39:37Production of him has been off for it. No years. Of course,
- 39:40you spirited horn pipe stool the shoes, I recall. But then we get
- 39:44an appearance from doctor Marvin Monroe. Yeah, I forgot that he was in
- 39:46this episode, and he says that he used to take months to find out
- 39:51if someone was insane. But now thanks to what oh I forgot take home
- 39:55personality test. That's right, I knew it was the test of Yeah,
- 40:00it answered twenty questions and determined how crazy sugar no sugarn someone is. I
- 40:06love it when normally Krusty is the mouthpiece for one of all expressive Yiddish terms,
- 40:10but I like it when someone else gets to throw one in. But
- 40:13then he asked Marge to fill in the forms because she won't do it.
- 40:15Then he asked Lisa, and this is where we get the whole meditation of
- 40:20an eight year old or thoughts of an eight year old. Basically her poem
- 40:22man it had meditation, I think in ruminations or something terribly pretentious. Liza,
- 40:29you like homework? Could you fill out this form for me? Well,
- 40:31all right, if you listen to the poem I just wrote. Meditations
- 40:37are Turning eight by Lisa Simpson. I had a cat named Snowball. She
- 40:40died. She died. Mama said she was sleeping. She lied, she
- 40:45lied. Why why is my cat dead? Couldn't that Chrysler hit me instead?
- 40:52I had an amster named Snuffy. He died, she lied, she
- 40:55lied. Hoad is bowling. There, It's just the perfect. Now can
- 41:02you say no deal now without doing the X? No deal? I think
- 41:07I can. People on the Deal and odeal show just love doing it.
- 41:12No deal actually Champion. By the way, this is an audio thing,
- 41:16but we were actually doing the no Deal No Deal. Yeah, so he
- 41:22has Bart here, but it's not sure. It's not that time you let
- 41:23me vote for you. But Homer watches funny Stone videos as Bart's doing it
- 41:28and baby with a nail gun, dog on fire, Dog on fire,
- 41:30dog on fire. It just says yes to everything here and unfortunately he does
- 41:35not pass the test, and so that's Kaffman. He wets his pants so
- 41:38good. He's then taken to New Bedlam. The mental asylum is you got
- 41:42to say that these days mental asylum, mental hospital, I think mental hospitals,
- 41:45even a mental hospital. Well it is be your mental health. Yeah,
- 41:50that is true, mental health hospital. Maybe. Yeah, it's the
- 41:52rest hope for the emotionally interesting. Apparently that's what the science says. Lovely
- 41:57ephimis. They show him the ink spots and the boy, the boy.
- 42:00That's actually a great payoff. Later there is a buck, but they stamp
- 42:06his hand. He's insane and whoever has this stamp isn't he? Then he's
- 42:10thrown in with the big white guy who thinks he's a little black guy and
- 42:14cue Michael Jackson. Well, I'm Homo Simpson from the Simpsons. Homer doesn't
- 42:19know who Michael Jackson is, unfortunately, does the Billy Jean dance, does
- 42:22the moonwalk? What's that thing? And you know what, what are you
- 42:23throwing it for? For wearing one white glove? Kevin and Rahyinstein's and the
- 42:31kids now watching Itchy and Scratchy. It has banged the cat slowly. I've
- 42:36got here. They showed the kids laughing at it. They looked hideous.
- 42:38The animation here was, oh, really terrible. It's worth going back if
- 42:43you can find access to this episode. Check out Spartan Lisa laughing at this
- 42:46scene. It's really bad. Just looks like a you know when they said
- 42:51in the earlier episodes where they said they they had to delete, although they
- 42:53had to go back and reanimate some episodes. It was Summer Chanted Evening.
- 42:55It felt like the animation from that is really really bad. But Lisa hints
- 42:59he that you know, we're about that present and as barsis, you want
- 43:01that once a year empty gesture, You've got it, And I guess that's
- 43:05what a lot of it is. Isn't it your birthday? Better get you
- 43:07a present? I guess so, and then we're at the mental health hospital
- 43:13and he introduces Frank the Idiot. He's an idiots advance. It is advant
- 43:15Yeah, that's the term that's sort of fallen out of favor. Hmm yes,
- 43:19and fight by no wow, and the chief who's the chief from the
- 43:24chief is from One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest Vaness. It's nineteen sixty eight.
- 43:30Nobody else getting in that time. Somebody reached out to me. I
- 43:35think there is another it's not not as obvious Cookoo's Nest reference, but there
- 43:40is someone a little bit later who looks like Jack Nicholson as McMurphy from Really
- 43:45Well, it's just sitting in the hospital. No, no ask. I
- 43:50think Homer's asking how do I get out of it? Yeah? There's one
- 43:52way eating the nurse oh yeah yeah, And he looks a bit like Jack
- 43:54Nichols and that nurse that look too bad. She's probably you have to be
- 43:59tough to work in the place like that, I'd imagine absolutely. Yeah.
- 44:01Yeah, you get a lot of shit thrown at your own just yeah,
- 44:05literally and metaphoric. But he calls home, what are the other places on
- 44:09the on the speed died? Did you see I did Larry Kings show oprah
- 44:15Rado and then it just said got a field on who and a ski report?
- 44:20Why ski report that? I don't know. Yeah, I'm sure the
- 44:22joke there's somewhere that I've missed. But he's too embarrassed the course against Michael
- 44:25to call for him. Just crematorium, you'll kill him. We grillham.
- 44:30Hello, who is this? Bert Simpson? Who the hell are you?
- 44:32I'm Michael Jackson, the Michael Jackson. No way, it's true. I'm
- 44:37with your father in a mental institution and he's Elvis with you. He could
- 44:42be. It's a big hospital. That's always been the thing, isn't it.
- 44:45Alvis is still alive. That's sort of that they're still to this day
- 44:47used two Park and Alvis. They're the two ones. Yeah, I mean,
- 44:52there was that whole thing about Paul McCartney is dead and Elvis is still
- 44:54alive. People actually believe Pau McCartney's dead. That's wild to me. And
- 44:58they believe that Pau mcartney's and an imposta, so weird. He's there,
- 45:05He's simply having a wonderful Christmas time all the time. I'm not a huge
- 45:09fan of that song. Though I like, it just felt very just.
- 45:14You listen to it and you go, Paul was just trying to make money
- 45:16with this. He's like, I'm gonna write a Christmas ching. You just
- 45:19put that in there to be commercial. Yeah. How many times have I
- 45:22said, though, that's we should do that. We should knuckle down and
- 45:25write a Christmas song and then we're just on Easy Street forever. Yeah,
- 45:28man RYA Kerrey, what a resurger she's had every every December twenty five,
- 45:34Yes, it was December first. She cracks out of the ice, but
- 45:39he wants him to stand the line whilst goes and tells his friends and family.
- 45:43But he says, you know you better up. And then was he
- 45:45said, you don't et you dad to have a little botomy. You want
- 45:46you dad out of you are sure you're right? Basically, Hom's like he's
- 45:49worried's never gonna get to he reasure its home. I don't worry, you
- 45:52will get out the only one get out. As you said, eating the
- 45:53norse wise guy voice. It's a little wise guy. I mean I think
- 45:58it was wise guy voice. Yeah. Also trying to put that nickelsony and
- 46:00sneering. Yeah, yeah, Marge shays that I told you one day,
- 46:05he's dad to the crazy house, poor house, crazy house, poor house.
- 46:07He's a shame to admit to to MJ that he is scared. That's
- 46:09a big deal for a guy, even to this day, to admit that
- 46:12they're scared. Oh, very much. Yeah, because we're just we're raised
- 46:15to think you've got to be tough and strong. And I think i've ever
- 46:17I've seen my dad cry once was when a family member passed away. But
- 46:22did you ever see Bobby cry very even not very often? Once? Yeah,
- 46:25yeah, and that was that was very bracing. Yeah. I do
- 46:28like the idea though, of like Homer admitting to another guy, I'm scared.
- 46:31You know, he obviously is scared. He's ever going to get out
- 46:34and is where Leon slash MJ sings Ben or Homer. I've always liked this.
- 46:39Oh it's just a nice little spin on it. But then pancakes football,
- 46:44This slayed in my household when I was boobies and bubbles. Is going
- 46:51to be a long night. Then it's time for a therapy session. And
- 46:52we've got Dave here who suffers from agoraphobia, just baby smoking and group therapy
- 46:59as well. It's like, yeah, nineties or magical time. Marge pleads
- 47:01to the doc. You know, don't just don't mention, but there really
- 47:05is a but good lot. Marge is very well dressed. She's picking up
- 47:08when she's pleading her case. That's like she's going to prison. Yeah,
- 47:12prison. But she embraces Homer and he's revealed here there's not a threat to
- 47:16yourself or others in writing. Please and they give him They're not Insane certificate,
- 47:22a diploma diploma. Yeah, and Michael says that he can come home
- 47:27as work with only there voluntarily because you're sad When in the nineteen seventy nineties
- 47:30Off the Wall record only one or was nominated for one lousy Grammy? That
- 47:35sounds about right? Yeah? Is that true? Shall we look it up?
- 47:38Off the Wall? I feel like Off the Walk won everything. It's
- 47:40just so renowned. But it's got rock with you on it, which is
- 47:45one of my favorite Michaels. What's the other one? I want to be
- 47:47starting something? Oh that's on Thriller? Or is it on bad lem on
- 47:51the Boogie? That's Off the Wall, right, isn't it? I think
- 47:52so? Or? Yeah? Is that just a Michael song? Or is
- 47:54it a Jackson's Oh you could be right there. Off the Wall. Let's
- 47:58get the track listing for Off the Wall. It's his first album. I
- 48:01remember having it owing it track listing scroll out to the bottom. God,
- 48:05damn was a little bit much. But don't stop to you get enough.
- 48:07That's what I'm thinking of a dub it. You got rock with you,
- 48:09working day and night. Off the Walk, Girlfriend, She's out of my
- 48:12life. It's falling in love. That's they're the singles that were released from
- 48:15it. Yeah, I'm say my mom, Samakusa. Great record, and
- 48:19then it was Thriller just changed everything, right, Thriller changed a lot of
- 48:23things. Yeah, it was particularly like music videos, didn't they? Oh
- 48:27yeah, absolutely? I mean, wasn't it an event to actually see the
- 48:30full It was an event to watch the making of Thriller. Really, that's
- 48:32pretty cool. That really spawned MTV, didn't It was a TV a thing
- 48:37before that. MTV was a thing before that. But I think certainly took
- 48:42you took just sort of, yeah, we can make movies out of this
- 48:46now. Yeah. So back home though, so they're all happy at that
- 48:50at the at the mental health hospital. But back home, Lisa is sad
- 48:52she's seeing Happy birthday to herself, Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday,
- 49:00Happy birthday. Oh I look to me child, happy birthday too. You
- 49:13do feel bad for her that they've forgotten her on her birthday. But there's
- 49:16a lot going on. There is a lot going on. Still, it's
- 49:19a daughter. But then we get they call home, Joe's taxid him and
- 49:23you snuff them. We stuffed them. I feel like you couldn't say we
- 49:25snuff him anymore, could you. I don't think he could right on a
- 49:30kid show, we snuff them or you snuff them. I think it's a
- 49:32perfectly acceptable alternative to Yeah, maybe all right, But he pretends so.
- 49:38But this was basically Homer calling up home and he threatens Bart but then he
- 49:42pretends he's been nice when the dog's looking at what's going on here, and
- 49:45he says he's bringing Michael Jackson home to make sure there's plenty of cold cuts
- 49:47and beer on ice, But unfortunately is a vegetarian. Are you sure you're
- 49:52here voluntarily? I'm a vegetarian. I didn't drink. Yes, promises not
- 49:54to tell anybody, but he can't help it, so he just tells you
- 49:57just does he know, and of course it spreads all the way through even
- 50:05to the bulletin on KBBL radio. And they're going to play an extra long
- 50:08version of it in the Gada Divita. Is that so they can go out
- 50:10and see Michael. I think it must be in a garda divida is already
- 50:14long, yes, so extra long version, yes, So that's what they
- 50:17That's what Bart uses in. Bart seals his soul. By the way,
- 50:20it was in the Garden by Iron Butterfly, great song, yes, who
- 50:27then closes for the first time ever so clear it's a big deal here in
- 50:30spring for the Michael Jackson is coming to town. But then over here is
- 50:32the helicopter over the over the house, and the mayor announces that they're going
- 50:36to announcing the new expressway, the Michael Jackson Expressway. And so this is
- 50:40post bad but pre dangerous dangerous. Was eighties, wasn't it? I thought
- 50:45it? I thought it went thriller, bad dangerous And what is black and
- 50:51white? Michael Jackson album Black or White? Just have a Look So dangerous?
- 50:55Was ninety one for the same year? Ish? Okay, yeah,
- 50:59all this what when when ninety wanted to come out? I think in twenty
- 51:04sixth November. So this air before Dangerous? Yeah, so it thriller was
- 51:07I was eighty I thought three was eighty okay, so eighty two bad was
- 51:12eighty seven? Yeah? What was the one that had him bo is a
- 51:15history where he's like a statue on the front. Yeah, and that's like
- 51:16mid nineties. That's the one I remember the most of the kid because all
- 51:20the singles when I was growing up on video hits used to put the album
- 51:22cover next to the song title. I think that was like you and Loon.
- 51:28What was the earth song on that one? Oh yeah, let's remember
- 51:30the time. I think the remember get a better Please God, I haven't
- 51:35thought about that song for so long. Yield the wood, make it a
- 51:37better pace for you and for me. Great guy, maybe not the best
- 51:46babies that no, apparently not no, but I all think Michael Jackson's going
- 51:51to be coming to Springfield though. Leon gets out of the car and they
- 51:54realized, oh, he's three hundred pounds, he's white, he's just with
- 51:58that flare all things that have been leveled at you'rs truly. Yes. Everyone
- 52:02then leaves and gets a punched. Thank's aroun here again your tool? Yeah,
- 52:07then Lisa asks about the present, and she's afraid to ask. You
- 52:10should trust your instincts on that one. So she basically is gonna delete him
- 52:15from her life. She's very sad about this. Homer tries washing off the
- 52:19stamp, but it's not coming off, and Michael overhears Lisa writing the letter
- 52:22to Bart. Dear Bart, I am using the stationary Mom and Dad gave
- 52:27me for my birthday to inform you that we are now brother and sister in
- 52:32name only. Perhaps if a professional so advice is I'll give you a hut.
- 52:37It's a far distant family reunion, but rest assured there will be purely
- 52:44for a show. It's a bit dramatic, but I guess she's eight year
- 52:49old, Yes, eight year old. But he goes and tells Bart,
- 52:52you know, let's go write a song to show that you can. You
- 52:54know when I was your age six girl records. It's like, you're actually
- 52:58fucking crazy. You didn't and basically, what was what is it that makes
- 53:02him think? No, it's the it's a threat of not So he goes,
- 53:07you could not write a song for your sister, or you could take
- 53:08advantage of potentially having Michael Jackson, and he's like, Michael, it's like
- 53:13you just wanted to believe. It's Colin. When you say things like sometimes
- 53:15you just choose to believe. It's like when you clap your hands to say
- 53:19you believe in fairies to bring tinker Bell back to life. Have you ever
- 53:22done that? I think I did it once. It did it work?
- 53:24It did on Yeah, it actually did. When you're a kid, though,
- 53:28and you know it's not true. We discussed this in South Park.
- 53:30You know it's not real. But there's still that fear of saying bloody Mary
- 53:35three times in the mirror. Never a sleeper. There's that one kid that's
- 53:37gonna do it. Don't do it times, don't do it again, don't
- 53:45do it. But they he writes the Gasoline Song about Lisa. Her name
- 53:52is Lisa, and so I'm not going to go down. Well, so
- 53:54they go to look at Lisa. She looks sad, she's discussed, she
- 53:59knows we're looking at her, but she still would have been sad. But
- 54:01then they write the song I really call me crazy, but I really love
- 54:06the draining wheels. Come after your bag about dad boys, you like whatever.
- 54:09I was like, even that is like a jingle like Michael Jackson just
- 54:14had it man. Indeed, and even if he does throwing a yeah to
- 54:17be commercial, that's fine. Yes, that was his thing. But they
- 54:21enter Lisa's room the following morning and they sing one of my favorite sims of
- 54:24songs of all time, the Happy Birthday Lisa and just I always had this
- 54:27thing when I was a kid, I always said that when my sister gets
- 54:30married, I'm gonna I was gonna sing, Stacey, it's your wed ding.
- 54:34I was gonna like change the words for that. That was always my
- 54:36thing, say to get married, I can do it. Please married.
- 54:39Yeah, it's such a happy song. Someone's marrying Stacy. Yeah. And
- 54:44you just we you loving good will. I love that song. I know
- 54:47it's deleted and I'm not almost likely groomed children apparently, well that's the that's
- 54:52the belief, but I do, I do love that song. Homer is
- 54:58still sleeping. You know you slipped me with he's not in saying award next
- 55:01and they thank Michael. This is where his voice changes and he reveals that
- 55:05he's actually on Compowski from Patterson New joy Ysy And to make a tire point,
- 55:08which one of us is crazy me I got this and you're a credit
- 55:13to Dementia. By the way, Yes, the voice is now switched to
- 55:17Hanker's area is a Hank Now Hank is doing There we go and that's the
- 55:22end of the episode. Yeah, as he's seeing that a list it's And
- 55:28they have a actual version of the song over the closing credits as well,
- 55:30they do, indeed, but probably still sung by what's his name, Kip
- 55:34Lemon? Lemon. Yeah, I love this episode. I'll always love this
- 55:37episode. It's a shame that it's not existing anymore in you know, in
- 55:42streaming or whatever. Understandable. But if you can go get a DVD or
- 55:46access it and find it, find access to it somehow, because it's it's
- 55:49great. It's a great use of a guest start. So weird, isn't
- 55:52it It is? Indeed, Yeah, I don't think it's anything that anyone
- 55:55was expecting at all, least of all Matt Groening when he was working later
- 55:59at the otherice that night and got a call from Michael Jackson. And Michael
- 56:00Jackson didn't even use his name in the credits. He's referred to as John
- 56:05J. Smith, not the initial J. The word J A Y I
- 56:07wonder if they marketed at the time obviously wasn't there, But did they marked
- 56:10Michael Jackson's going to be on The Simpsons? But then did did the viewers
- 56:15feel cheated because they didn't? If you were just watching the show and you
- 56:17didn't go we couldn't go online. But if you didn't watch the news and
- 56:21find out that Michael Jackson actually the voice, if they said Michael Jackson's coming
- 56:23to the Simpsons and you saw that as a kid and then you realize it
- 56:25wasn't Michael Jackson, would you have felt cheated? Do you think as a
- 56:28viewer because he wasn't never listened to the credits. I think the people at
- 56:31Simpson's HQ were probably working over time, certainly the marketing department, to let
- 56:36you know. It's like, yes, it's builders John J. Smith,
- 56:37but we all know who it is, right, We all know that Sam
- 56:40Etick is Dustin Hoffman and we all know that John J. Smith is MJ.
- 56:45Yeah. Look, it is sad that this episode has been quite unquote
- 56:50canceled or memory hold or what have you. It's also sad that we didn't
- 56:52get the proposed sequel. This would have been awesome. So it was Prince.
- 56:58That's who they had in mind. Lean was going to to return as
- 57:00Prince. What's the actual story of the episode, though, they do have
- 57:05it somewhere listed online, But basically I remember reading going this just feels like
- 57:07a rehash. It felt from what I understand, it seemed kind of strange
- 57:12that Leon came back to Springfield and now he was more like Prince. He
- 57:16sort of had more of a Prince identity than Michael Jackson identity. Surely everyone
- 57:20remembers him though from the first time, and basically wanted Springfield to sort of
- 57:23loosen up and be love sexy in the Prince day. So, I don't
- 57:28know, this feels pretty thin. Even though it was Conan O'Brien who wrote
- 57:32the script, ConA was it. I think Conan either wrote or worked on
- 57:36it. It's gonna be a propose sequel somewhere on the I produced sequels.
- 57:39A year after Start Grabbing Dad aired The Writer's Plan, a sequel which Campassi
- 57:44would return, this time claiming to be the pop star Prince. The script
- 57:46was written by freelancers and polished by Conan and O'Brien. That Conan polish,
- 57:51Yeah, According to Mike Reese, it saw Kampaski encouraged the Springfield residents to
- 57:54loosen up, become more flamboyant, and become more sexually open. Prince agreed
- 58:00to voice Kampowski and sent notes about what his character would wear, but the
- 58:02writers discovered that Prince was referring to a script that had been written by his
- 58:06chauffeur, so he must have rewrote the script. Prince disliked their script and
- 58:09demanded the other one be used, but the writers refused. The script became
- 58:14one of the few unproduced Simpsons scripts. Following Prince's death. In twenty sixteen,
- 58:16Show and Our Geen posted two screenshots of scenes from the script. There
- 58:21like a museum for Simpson stuff like that. Oh god, it's a bit
- 58:23like the end of Writer the Lost Arty. Just this warehouse full of unproduced
- 58:29golden ear of Simpsons episode. Yeah, absolutely, I am on Prince's side.
- 58:32I'm going to say I wouldn't have brought him to that either. That
- 58:35seems very thin, as you said, and a rehash of theion. Hey
- 58:38he returns as a different but everyone he's just been here. Everyone knows he's
- 58:42not Michael Jackson. Is it just that everyone going, Oh, just let
- 58:45Leon be Leon. Let's see. I think Leon left Springfield not under a
- 58:49cloud, but I think the residents of Springfield kind of like, ah,
- 58:52we were short changed by this guy. Yeah. Actually, I guess the
- 58:53residents of spring Fold don't know that he wasn't real, do they? Only
- 58:58the Simpsons know that. Oh yeah, and he came clean to the Simpsons
- 59:00family. Oh yeah, good point. I mean, that's that's a whole
- 59:04new can of worms. The only way our Gene, for us to know
- 59:07this is to release the entire script. We need to see it, both
- 59:10scripts. The only way that we can be sure about this is for Ol
- 59:15Jean to come on four Finger Discount and talk about it exactly right, our
- 59:17mister Gene. Please, mister Jean, come on, come on the show
- 59:21and let's talk about it. Yeah, it want to be great. We
- 59:23want to compare script. I'd love to compare Princes's script, his script.
- 59:29That's fantastic. Princess who knows Prince better than that guy though all the time?
- 59:35Yeah, pretty bit of an odd not not an odd ball, but
- 59:39I mean he showed upon a new girl, just did his own thing.
- 59:44Man, I love to hear what's what songs? You don't they would have
- 59:47used peple range. People raised the big one, right, I imagine.
- 59:50So yeah, although Prince probably being a pretty savvy businessman, what was it
- 59:54he released around the late eighties with sort of We're not in My name is
- 1:00:01Prince? E seventies, wasn't it. Yeah, we're in the Diamond and
- 1:00:06Pearls. Yeah, we're in Cream and Cream. What a song? So
- 1:00:10dope. I need to find the the quote because Prince was just full of
- 1:00:16these great quotes. I need to find Remember when he passed and there now
- 1:00:21on the radio, I pulled over. I was like, wow, that
- 1:00:23affected me. The three deaths that affected me, Prince, David Bowie and
- 1:00:28Robin Williams. I just they stopped me in my tracks. Oh yeah.
- 1:00:31And it's always weird when you sort of it happens in the middle of your
- 1:00:36day, like you don't wake up to that news. Yeah yeah, I
- 1:00:38mean I think I was on social media and started, well, yeah,
- 1:00:42Matthew Perry was a recent one, has a big one. Yeah, he's
- 1:00:44Ledger And that was kind of like here he's Ledger's dead. Sorry, I
- 1:00:49need to find this quote from Prince, from Prince and him, hang on,
- 1:00:52Prince and matt Damon it's the quote, just gream. The headline is
- 1:00:58Prince had no time for Damien's pedestrians, small talk, good sanctioned his bufoonery.
- 1:01:04What were they working on together? This was just at a party.
- 1:01:07Oh okay, here it is. This is a quote from Julius Stiles,
- 1:01:08who co starred with in the Bourne movies. After The Born Older Maiden came
- 1:01:13out, there was a premiere in London. Prince actually came to it,
- 1:01:15then got tickets for the cast to come see him perform. We were summed
- 1:01:17into a room to meet him after the show. Matt said, so you
- 1:01:21live in Minnesota? Are you live in Minnesota? Damon Prince said, I
- 1:01:24live in my own heart, mad demon. Most people will be just like,
- 1:01:32yes, I'm talking about Damon Princess live in my own home. Goddamn
- 1:01:38lord. What does David say back to that? What do you do?
- 1:01:44Nice neighborhood? Good? What's the weather like? Good? Good school catchment?
- 1:01:52But yes, so the unproduced sequel, it's a real shame because yeah,
- 1:01:54I mean the story is it's kind of bleak if you ask me.
- 1:01:58But we don't know the full story obviously, the full premise of the episode,
- 1:02:00but it would have been nice to have had prints on the on the
- 1:02:02Simpsons at some point, it certainly would have. It'd be nice to have
- 1:02:06Prince still with us, honest, exactly. Yeah, the man just burned
- 1:02:09out rather than faded away. This was also the episode that had the rerun
- 1:02:14when or when it was had the George Bush saying that it should be more
- 1:02:17like the Waltons and less like the Simpsons. That's correct. Yeah, So.
- 1:02:20January thirtieth, nineteen ninety two rerun of the episode featured a brief alternate
- 1:02:22opening, which was written, I know so it was written in response to
- 1:02:25him saying that. So. It was written in response to a point made
- 1:02:29by the then President, George W. Bush Senior, three days earlier.
- 1:02:31The show had previously had a few but the president's wife Barbara Bush, when
- 1:02:36in the October first, nineteen ninety edition of People, she called the Simpsons
- 1:02:38the dumbest thing she'd ever seen. The writers decided to respond on privately sending
- 1:02:44a polite letter to Bush in which they posed as Marge Simpson. Bush immediately
- 1:02:47sent a reply in which she apologized. Later, on January twenty seventh,
- 1:02:52nineteen ninety two, George Bush made a speech during his re election campaign,
- 1:02:54which included the statement We're going to keep it trying to strengthen the American family,
- 1:02:58make it families a lot more like the Walls, less like the Simpsons.
- 1:03:00The writers wanted to respond quickly as Barbara Bush had to them. As
- 1:03:04each episode of The Simpsons takes more than six months to produce, it's difficult
- 1:03:07for the show to comment on current events. The writers decided to add a
- 1:03:12brief response to the next broadcast of The Simpsons, a rerun of Start Grabbing
- 1:03:15Dad. This episode on January thirtieth, Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart,
- 1:03:19was called in to record a line. The broadcast included a new tongue
- 1:03:22in cheek opening. The scene from the episode Simpson and Delilah begins in the
- 1:03:25Simpsons living room, where the family is watching Bush's speech. We are going
- 1:03:30to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a
- 1:03:36lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons. Hey,
- 1:03:39we're just like the Waltons. We're praying for an end of the depression too.
- 1:03:45And the opening is featured on the season four DVD box set. That's
- 1:03:46actually pretty clever, yes, well the Simpsons. Someone say they're kind of
- 1:03:51clever. Yeah, you should have waited a few years and come like,
- 1:03:55you know, more like the Waltons, less like the Griffins. Yeah.
- 1:03:59No, one wants to be like the Griffins. Right, No, they
- 1:04:00do not know. That's not talking about the Griffins. But this has been
- 1:04:02our review. I've start roving Dad. We hope you guys enjoyed it.
- 1:04:05It was just so much fun to go back and revisit such a classic episode
- 1:04:08that if I had been doing this review, I wouldn't have because I had
- 1:04:11to pull out the DVD's and I very rarely pull out the DVDs anymore,
- 1:04:14which is a shame, because like, oh, let's get it. I
- 1:04:15love I love just holding it. No, it's a cool box set.
- 1:04:17Hold up to the camera. There see a slipcase, the cool cover.
- 1:04:21When was it originally come out in two thousand and they just come out every
- 1:04:25year the first or two that this would have been two thousand and three.
- 1:04:27This one came out like that calls that right all the we love physical media.
- 1:04:31We do love physical media. Get the booklet here and everything. I
- 1:04:34just I loved it. I love pulling it, putting the DVD in Alien
- 1:04:38actually put the David in and he was like, what is this? What
- 1:04:40is this? There's the medium Dando says. I love pulling it out and
- 1:04:43putting it in and putting in the disc into the player, I should say,
- 1:04:48but yeah, it's just it was just so nice having a menu.
- 1:04:51I was like, I remember the menus because basically when you were a kid,
- 1:04:55I would have been what twelve when this one came out, maybe a
- 1:04:57bit older, twelve thirteen. I used to put these v he is going
- 1:05:00to go to sleep, used to listen to the commentaries so quite off,
- 1:05:02and I wake up the middle of the night and it's just the men you
- 1:05:03know, you wake up to our menu. Yeah that was your ASMR.
- 1:05:06Yeah. So like I would wake up and like, these menus are just
- 1:05:11ingrained in my mind. You know. It was just a flashback. But
- 1:05:14anyway, start graving, Daddy Clai great episode. The next classic episode we
- 1:05:16might review. I'm actually gonna be doing a I'll plug it here. It's
- 1:05:20gonna be at four thirty in the morning, so you won't be doing this
- 1:05:23one with me. I can't tell it is with a podcast. I could
- 1:05:27murder a podcast and do like a true crime podcast over in the UK and
- 1:05:30we're going to be tackling who shot mister Burns Part one and Part two?
- 1:05:32Oh okay then yeah, four thirty in the morning. You're available, you
- 1:05:34can do it. You're right, I'm probably not gonna be we can here
- 1:05:38at four thirty, but have fun. And we're thinking of tackling as if
- 1:05:42it's a true crime a bit of a different spin. Wow, getting innovative.
- 1:05:45Yeah, I could murder a podcast. So check out those guys as
- 1:05:48well, and they're going to be coming on here at four figure discount in
- 1:05:50friends of the pod having a merry old time. Yeah, but thank you
