- 0:02Speaker 1: College football with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:05Speaker 2: And of course, everyone knows the exact right time to
- 0:08Speaker 2: start a college football show is week four of the
- 0:11Speaker 2: college football season.
- 0:12Speaker 1: There's T-Bob again.
- 0:13Speaker 3: That's right. Special guests. Glad to be back, guys. Love
- 0:17Speaker 3: coming to hang out with Stu Gatz and the Bear.
- 0:19Speaker 4: College football.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Mario Cristobal, head coach at the University of Miami. Thank
- 0:24Speaker 1: you for joining us.
- 0:24Speaker 4: I just, I don't find any value in... Humans, like,
- 0:27Speaker 4: just spewing diarrhea out of their mouth. With Stu Gotts.
- 0:31Speaker 4: I can give a rat's fat ass about what he
- 0:33Speaker 4: says or does. And the Bear. The Bear is awesome.
- 0:37Speaker 5: You're listening to College Football with Stu Gotts and the Bear.
- 0:41Speaker 2: It is College Football with Stu Gotts and Bear. We're
- 0:44Speaker 2: headed into a big week six, and look who's here.
- 0:47Speaker 4: It's D-Bob.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And we'll get to him in just a second.
- 0:51Speaker 4: Bear, I was laughing.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We were talking right before we started here.
- 0:54Speaker 2: About the Mario Cristobal interview that we did yesterday. And
- 0:59Speaker 2: T-Bob was commenting on what a hard-ass Mario Cristobal is.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And I was saying, that's Mario Cristobal wacky. That's as
- 1:08Speaker 2: wacky as.
- 1:09Speaker 4: I've ever heard. Mario Cristobal on the air. He really
- 1:12Speaker 4: came out of his shell. I was going to say,
- 1:14Speaker 4: we did such a great job schmoozing him and putting
- 1:18Speaker 4: him in a complete comfort zone that we were able
- 1:20Speaker 4: to get some laughs and some yucks and Some talking
- 1:24Speaker 4: about cracks in the pavement in Miami and coffee places. Yeah,
- 1:28Speaker 4: he was good. Now, I'll say this.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I said that dude's just like, he's just like, he's
- 1:35Speaker 3: a no-nonsense guy. But to be fair to him, I
- 1:38Speaker 3: don't want to be misconstrued here. I've done a lot
- 1:41Speaker 3: of very boring interviews with coaches, right? Where they're just
- 1:46Speaker 3: not saying anything of interest. They clearly don't want to
- 1:49Speaker 3: be there. Mario was not that. His kind of baseline
- 1:53Speaker 3: is like, no nonsense, just football and kicking ass and
- 1:57Speaker 3: working hard. But you can be funny from that baseline.
- 2:00Speaker 4: And he was. He was open, sincere. But his baseline
- 2:04Speaker 4: is just like.
- 2:05Speaker 3: One of the most tough, kind of badass exteriors that
- 2:08Speaker 3: I've ever talked to.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Yes. Made a fan out of me. How about getting
- 2:12Speaker 4: into the First Amendment? Talking about culture, Constitution, and the Canes.
- 2:19Speaker 2: The three Cs. Yes, the one thing I noticed, though,
- 2:21Speaker 2: during that interview, Mikey A., was that T-Bob did not
- 2:25Speaker 2: call him Christofraud.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I mean... No.
- 2:28Speaker 4: No, no, dude.
- 2:29Speaker 1: No, dude.
- 2:31Speaker 3: I said I talked a lot of shit and I
- 2:33Speaker 3: thought about doing the Chris Fraud line, but he intimidated
- 2:35Speaker 3: me out of it within like the first five minutes
- 2:37Speaker 3: of the interview.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I was like, no, I don't know. I've known Mario
- 2:40Speaker 2: for two decades. I was sweating during that interview.
- 2:44Speaker 4: You would have done it to Lincoln Riley. You would
- 2:46Speaker 4: have done it to Lincoln. You would have said it
- 2:48Speaker 4: to Lincoln Riley.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:49Speaker 4: I mean, yeah. I would love.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I would love to go to a Miami Tuesday practice.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I mean, I bet you it is violent out there.
- 3:01Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Like in a day and age where we worry about
- 3:03Speaker 3: the direction of the game, losing its soul, losing its edge. No,
- 3:07Speaker 3: I bet you Miami Tuesday practice is bloody.
- 3:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Mario is the gatekeeper. He's the gatekeeper of old school.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He is.
- 3:14Speaker 4: He really is.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Tuesday during a bye week. It would be just as intense,
- 3:18Speaker 1: by the way.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So.
- 3:20Speaker 4: It's interesting.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Yep.
- 3:21Speaker 4: T-Bob.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So we have a big week six coming up. We
- 3:23Speaker 1: have Alabama. We have Georgia. The more things change, the
- 3:26Speaker 1: more they stay the same.
- 3:27Speaker 2: There is some weather to factor into this equation, but
- 3:30Speaker 2: take it away as we head into a big week
- 3:33Speaker 2: six here.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Stu Gottsper, thanks for having me back in, guys. Love
- 3:37Speaker 3: getting to hang out here with the whole family.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Okay. So I want to get into a couple of
- 3:41Speaker 3: storylines before we get into some of this weekend's game,
- 3:44Speaker 3: but we do have a great slate coming up this weekend.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Chalk full of narratives and storyline. These are stuff we love.
- 3:49Speaker 3: as college football fans. But coming out of last week,
- 3:52Speaker 3: imagine this. There's drama in Ann Arbor. So after the
- 3:56Speaker 3: loss last week, tight end Zach Marshall hops in a
- 4:00Speaker 3: group text. Now, unfortunately, I have gotten to the age
- 4:05Speaker 3: where I'm not entirely clear which app the screenshots are
- 4:08Speaker 3: coming from. It looks like maybe Instagram, if I had
- 4:13Speaker 3: to guess.
- 4:14Speaker 4: Potentially Snapchat. But the point is, he's in a group message.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And he's ripping on the Michigan coaches, specifically OC Jason Beck,
- 4:23Speaker 3: talking about how they don't know what they're doing. He
- 4:26Speaker 3: told the tight ends there's no value in the room.
- 4:29Speaker 4: St.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Bryce Underwood's not the problem. It's the coaches, right? He
- 4:31Speaker 3: even signs off with, I never said this. Do not
- 4:36Speaker 3: share this anywhere.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And then, of course, somebody in the group text ends
- 4:39Speaker 3: up sharing all the screenshots on social media. Yes.
- 4:43Speaker 4: He needs to learn the invisible ink a little bit on–
- 4:46Speaker 4: on an iPhone on text.
- 4:50Speaker 2: He needs to learn that when you end the group
- 4:52Speaker 2: text by saying this doesn't leave the group text, it's
- 4:55Speaker 2: leaving the fucking group text.
- 4:57Speaker 1: That's what he needs to learn.
- 4:59Speaker 4: That too.
- 5:03Speaker 3: I'll be clear about this. Whoever leaked it, you're a scumbag.
- 5:06Speaker 3: That's betrayal of friendship.
- 5:08Speaker 4: That sucks. Whatever.
- 5:10Speaker 3: That said, oh, and by the way, Zach did, he
- 5:12Speaker 3: ends up having to come out and apologize for He
- 5:15Speaker 3: written letter. He says, you know, last weekend at the
- 5:17Speaker 3: hours after we lost, I made some inappropriate comments that
- 5:20Speaker 3: I regret and blah, blah, blah.
- 5:21Speaker 4: What a loss to the team. Yeah, exactly. So that's
- 5:25Speaker 4: what I want to get.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Like, this is how players talk. And, and, and, and, and,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and to be fair, like if I reach back into
- 5:32Speaker 3: my own experience at a college football locker room, we
- 5:36Speaker 3: used to talk about Les Miles like this quite a bit, right?
- 5:40Speaker 3: Like we were winning in spite of him instead of
- 5:43Speaker 3: because of him.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Right.
- 5:44Speaker 3: That said, with older age, I've maybe softened that a bit, right?
- 5:48Speaker 3: And you're like, well, I mean, look at the coach, whatever.
- 5:51Speaker 3: The point is, though, Jason Beck is getting a free
- 5:54Speaker 3: pass pair. We rip Bryce Underwood to shreds every single week.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Jason Beck is the highest paid offensive coordinator in the
- 6:03Speaker 3: entire country who is currently at the head of maybe
- 6:07Speaker 3: the worst offense in the entire country.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yeah. What is it? One 20 yard run. I think
- 6:12Speaker 4: they have so far this year, the running is not existence.
- 6:15Speaker 4: And it's one thing. And Joel Klatt was talking about
- 6:19Speaker 4: this on the broadcast the other day about how you
- 6:22Speaker 4: look at the parts of the Michigan offense and they
- 6:25Speaker 4: just don't seem to mesh what Jason Beck wants to do. Now,
- 6:30Speaker 4: Is it that or is it Jason Beck not really
- 6:34Speaker 4: being willing to mold his offense, the personnel that he has?
- 6:38Speaker 4: But if you look at the offensive line that they
- 6:40Speaker 4: have at Michigan compared to the offensive line that they
- 6:42Speaker 4: had at Utah and the way those guys at Utah
- 6:45Speaker 4: moved and shifted and were able to go kind of
- 6:48Speaker 4: side to side compared with Michigan, but straight ahead kind
- 6:51Speaker 4: of power run game tackle, there could be some truth
- 6:55Speaker 4: to that. There certainly is, but this is clearly– a
- 7:00Speaker 4: situation where they just have to get through this year.
- 7:04Speaker 4: I don't know if a bowl game is in the
- 7:05Speaker 4: cards for Michigan this year. They're probably going to lose
- 7:08Speaker 4: to Oregon. They're going to lose to Ohio State. And
- 7:11Speaker 4: UCLA might go there and beat them. And that puts
- 7:12Speaker 4: a 6-6 ceiling.
- 7:14Speaker 2: On them year one. Yes, it feels like they're losing
- 7:17Speaker 2: the bye week here. I have them at 3-3 right now. Yeah,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and really 3-3 with the caveat that it's truly 2-4.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yes. Because of West Michigan. T-Bob Bear. Are you on Telegram, T-Bob?
- 7:30Speaker 1: Uh, no.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Is that a messaging app? Did I buy drugs? Did
- 7:33Speaker 4: I buy drugs? I don't know. Why? No, it's a
- 7:37Speaker 4: good encrypted one that you might want to.
- 7:42Speaker 4: A lot of sensitive information is thrown around on Telegram.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Did I buy drugs?
- 7:45Speaker 4: I think....
- 7:49Speaker 3: I think that's maybe how me and one of my
- 7:53Speaker 3: friends of the past used to communicate for such things.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I have a question for both of you. Is this
- 7:58Speaker 2: the fastest a coach has ever lost a locker room?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Kyle Whittingham in Michigan?
- 8:02Speaker 4: I mean, it's damn near, man.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Again, I, I, it's, he looks to be kind of
- 8:12Speaker 3: over his head a little bit and I'm probably reading
- 8:14Speaker 3: too much in it. And so much of this is
- 8:15Speaker 3: results based. But again, we've talked about on the show, like,
- 8:19Speaker 3: When he's at Utah, he's a god.
- 8:20Speaker 4: He's a king.
- 8:21Speaker 3: And granted, they want him out of there, but still,
- 8:24Speaker 3: people are always pleased with him. The expectation is just
- 8:27Speaker 3: so much different at Michigan. And Bear, you hit the
- 8:31Speaker 3: nail on the head, and this is my biggest problem
- 8:34Speaker 3: with Beck.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Like you said.
- 8:35Speaker 3: He wants to run the same thing he was running
- 8:37Speaker 3: at Utah, this sort of horizontally attacking rushing game, but
- 8:41Speaker 3: he doesn't have the dogs for it. Like, it may
- 8:43Speaker 3: sound like a funny sentence, but you don't have Caleb
- 8:47Speaker 3: Lomu and Spencer Franeau.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Like, at Michigan, you don't have the tackles you had
- 8:51Speaker 4: at Utah, right?
- 8:52Speaker 3: Like, Michigan's success last year, where they were one of
- 8:55Speaker 3: the better rushing teams in the entire country, it was
- 8:56Speaker 3: all downhill, it was in the middle, and great coaches–
- 9:00Speaker 3: especially now this is like accepted. I almost think it's
- 9:03Speaker 3: like inherent truth. Great coaches in the modern age will
- 9:06Speaker 3: always adapt their system, their play callings to highlight their
- 9:11Speaker 3: personnel strengths. It does not appear like Beck is doing that.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And that's a mistake that I thought we were well
- 9:17Speaker 3: past this sort of my way or the highway approach.
- 9:19Speaker 3: And again, the thing that makes it even crazier is
- 9:22Speaker 3: for all the crap we've talked about Underwood. He's not
- 9:24Speaker 3: the highest paid quarterback in the entire country. Like, yeah,
- 9:27Speaker 3: he got the big deal out of high school, but
- 9:29Speaker 3: Mensah makes more. Like, there's tons of quarterbacks, probably like 20.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Yes. Damn near that make more money than Bryce Underwood.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Jason Beck is the highest paid OC in the country,
- 9:39Speaker 3: turning in the worst results.
- 9:40Speaker 4: He has to figure it out, or he's got to
- 9:42Speaker 4: get out of there.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Why should it be any different, okay, in college, especially
- 9:45Speaker 2: with all the money being thrown around, than it is
- 9:47Speaker 2: now in the NFL in terms of coaches and having
- 9:49Speaker 2: a short leash?
- 9:50Speaker 1: I understand a fan base.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Who prides itself on its football team, on its programs,
- 9:55Speaker 2: being upset because they don't like how this looks for Michigan.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And they want people fired, and I understand that. They're
- 10:00Speaker 2: spending money. They're spending money on tickets. They're spending money
- 10:03Speaker 2: in terms of going to the games. They're spending quality
- 10:07Speaker 2: time away from things they probably should be doing that
- 10:09Speaker 2: are more important. going and supporting Michigan football. And if
- 10:13Speaker 2: they want an OC and a coach out, I don't
- 10:15Speaker 2: blame them. In this day and age, I don't care.
- 10:18Speaker 2: If it's two weeks, three weeks, five weeks, a year,
- 10:20Speaker 2: two years, it doesn't matter. If you're not happy with
- 10:23Speaker 2: the product on the field, you're going to hear from
- 10:25Speaker 2: the fans.
- 10:25Speaker 4: So what? And especially, like, you look at the people
- 10:31Speaker 4: supporting the pay-for-play and the NIL, like, the money aspect
- 10:36Speaker 4: of it. Like, the only, like, the attachment they have
- 10:39Speaker 4: after eight years of $ 8 million, it's the emotional attachment
- 10:44Speaker 4: of rooting for them. So if it's not bringing them joy,
- 10:48Speaker 4: if it's not bringing them pleasure, watching Michigan football right now, yeah,
- 10:52Speaker 4: they got a right to be upset.
- 10:54Speaker 2: My apologies for not knowing this, but can any student,
- 10:57Speaker 2: any alum, can they donate to the NIL collective?
- 11:01Speaker 1: Can they do that?
- 11:03Speaker 2: So now you have fans who are actually giving their
- 11:06Speaker 2: own money to a collective to go get good players,
- 11:09Speaker 2: and of course they're going to be upset if the
- 11:11Speaker 2: coaches and players aren't good.
- 11:13Speaker 3: I stumbled upon a philosophical... Well, maybe not philosophical, but
- 11:16Speaker 3: I'll be interested to see how the market plays this out, right?
- 11:19Speaker 3: Because one of the reasons why... Stu, people are hung
- 11:22Speaker 3: up on making decisions like that is because the coaching buyouts, right?
- 11:25Speaker 4: Yeah. Head coaching buyouts are insane.
- 11:27Speaker 3: It's a cottage industry that the shadow Lord of college football,
- 11:31Speaker 3: Jimmy Sexton has created more power to him.
- 11:32Speaker 4: It's unbelievable. But, but, but, but bear to me in.
- 11:36Speaker 3: The past, Buyout culture was always rooted in the idea
- 11:41Speaker 3: that in order to win at recruiting, you needed to
- 11:44Speaker 3: have the recruits feel like, okay, this guy's going to
- 11:46Speaker 3: be here. And that was kind of the core tenet, right?
- 11:49Speaker 3: I need long-term security so I can sell long-term security
- 11:52Speaker 3: to my recruits. That has never been more irrelevant than
- 11:56Speaker 3: right now. The kids will leave way faster than Coach.
- 11:59Speaker 4: They'll go everywhere.
- 12:00Speaker 3: People bounce around 24-7. So I just wonder, Bear, is
- 12:04Speaker 3: there a world where we see this buyout market go away?
- 12:07Speaker 3: Because I don't know how you justify it right now.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Or maybe we're just too far gone. I can only
- 12:12Speaker 3: hope that that's the case. The Sexton buyout clauses and
- 12:17Speaker 3: him leveraging guys.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Against each other for jobs and putting room. Like you
- 12:21Speaker 4: talk about a kind of industry, just like you said,
- 12:24Speaker 4: it's been ridiculous. But I think we're seeing that now
- 12:28Speaker 4: where something has to go away in the finances of
- 12:32Speaker 4: building a college football team. Yes. The coaching buyout is
- 12:36Speaker 4: probably the easiest one to get rid of because– You
- 12:39Speaker 4: need money for players like Florida state, what they're going
- 12:42Speaker 4: through right now, redoing their stadium. And they don't have
- 12:45Speaker 4: the money to buy out Mike Norvell, which they want to.
- 12:48Speaker 4: And who knows, maybe Mike Norvell and Florida state win
- 12:50Speaker 4: Friday night at Louisville. And they're headed into the Miami
- 12:53Speaker 4: game with a little bit of momentum, but, but, but
- 12:55Speaker 4: I think there needs to be a little bit more
- 12:58Speaker 4: of a judicious look at where you're allocating your resources,
- 13:02Speaker 4: because paying players and getting talent and play is the
- 13:06Speaker 4: way to win right now. And, you bring in guys
- 13:08Speaker 4: and they're going to be maybe attached to a coach
- 13:11Speaker 4: and they might leave, but yeah, you need to figure
- 13:13Speaker 4: out a way to kind of lessen the financial strain
- 13:16Speaker 4: on potentially making a positive change in your, in your
- 13:19Speaker 4: football program. Well, it's not just Florida state.
- 13:21Speaker 3: I mean, word out of South Carolina is that the
- 13:24Speaker 3: Gamecocks might be in the same boat with Shane Beamer.
- 13:26Speaker 4: They're just like, dude, we just don't.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I mean, even if we wanted to, it just doesn't
- 13:29Speaker 3: make financial sense at this point. So, Uh, again, I, I,
- 13:33Speaker 3: I hope that that starts to write itself a little bit,
- 13:37Speaker 3: but don't forget Michigan has failed to score 20 points
- 13:40Speaker 3: in five of the first six games.
- 13:41Speaker 1: It's got off.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Uh, all right.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Now, uh, let's get to some of the games this
- 13:46Speaker 3: week because we got the big one, as you said, Stu.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Yes.
- 13:49Speaker 3: If you're a fan of Led Zeppelin, the song remains
- 13:51Speaker 3: the same. You look up and what do you know?
- 13:54Speaker 3: It's Georgia at Alabama. A couple of gods doing battle
- 13:59Speaker 3: in the sky as us mere mortals watch upon from
- 14:02Speaker 3: the shores. This is like China and U.S. going to
- 14:06Speaker 3: full nuclear war. Superpowers of our age going toe to toe. Bear,
- 14:11Speaker 3: what's your early read on this one?
- 14:13Speaker 4: My early read is clearly weather-dependent. I wonder if rain
- 14:19Speaker 4: and bad weather may be kind of a thing that
- 14:23Speaker 4: helps Georgia in this game. I'm not sure Alabama is
- 14:28Speaker 4: as stout in the trenches and stopping the run. If
- 14:31Speaker 4: it becomes a game where you're looking at Georgia and
- 14:34Speaker 4: it's going to be primarily placed on the ground, it
- 14:36Speaker 4: might favor Georgia. However, the flip, and not to dance
- 14:39Speaker 4: around the answer to the question, is... Maybe that helps
- 14:43Speaker 4: Keelan Russell in his run game and Georgia chasing him
- 14:46Speaker 4: around a sloppy field could be a problem as well.
- 14:48Speaker 4: But ultimately I think Georgia up front is going to
- 14:53Speaker 4: be by far the best team that Alabama has faced
- 14:56Speaker 4: so far. Georgia getting points at this game, I think
- 15:00Speaker 4: is very attractive to me. It's amazing. You look at
- 15:03Speaker 4: what Georgia has done throughout the last however many years
- 15:06Speaker 4: and yeah, they've had their highs and winning SEC titles
- 15:09Speaker 4: and national championships and tons of great NFL players. Alabama
- 15:14Speaker 4: has been their kryptonite, man. Ending a 40-something game regular
- 15:19Speaker 4: season win streak a couple years ago, a 33-game home
- 15:22Speaker 4: winning streak last year, then Bama got annihilated in the
- 15:26Speaker 4: SEC Championship game, so a little bit of revenge for Georgia.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Feels like I think Georgia ultimately could be the best
- 15:33Speaker 4: team in the country. Alabama has been fantastic so far,
- 15:38Speaker 4: and beating four powerful teams, and Russell looks great, and
- 15:41Speaker 4: the receivers look good again. I still have a couple
- 15:44Speaker 4: of questions about their defense, and I wonder if Georgia
- 15:47Speaker 4: might be the team on Saturday night to finally expose them.
- 15:50Speaker 2: T-Bob, I've heard a lot of people say that in
- 15:52Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks. They feel like top to bottom,
- 15:55Speaker 2: Georgia is the best team in the country.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Do you agree with that?
- 15:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's really the only reason where you
- 16:02Speaker 3: would maybe give some pushbook up to this point is
- 16:04Speaker 3: that they haven't played the hardest schedule.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:07Speaker 3: But, I mean, everybody that they've played, and maybe there's
- 16:11Speaker 3: a little bit to be said about Oklahoma, but they've
- 16:13Speaker 3: dog-walked them.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Like, they've looked... they look damn near perfect. Yeah. I mean,
- 16:18Speaker 4: trophy winner, John Mateer. Yeah.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Yeah. And we'll get to material because Oklahoma's got the
- 16:23Speaker 3: red river coming up this weekend. So I was looking
- 16:25Speaker 3: just to like ranks, you know, within conferences to see
- 16:28Speaker 3: where these two teams are.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And they're both elite.
- 16:30Speaker 3: They're both basically one and two in, in, in, in
- 16:33Speaker 3: almost everything. However, bear you did hit on maybe one
- 16:39Speaker 3: of the biggest areas of separations. And one of the
- 16:41Speaker 3: question marks was, that I would have here, which is
- 16:45Speaker 3: when Alabama is on offense, They have once again struggled
- 16:50Speaker 3: a bit with giving up negative plays, with allowing people
- 16:54Speaker 3: into that backfield, creating sacks, creating TFLs. Georgia's been damn
- 16:56Speaker 3: near perfect in that regard. But now they've overcome it,
- 17:00Speaker 3: because look at the third and 19 against Mississippi State.
- 17:02Speaker 3: Keelan Russell's incredible. He can make explosive plays. But I
- 17:04Speaker 3: don't think you're going to be able to do that
- 17:06Speaker 3: against this Georgia defense, who another area of separation, Georgia
- 17:10Speaker 3: is the best by far at the conference at preventing
- 17:13Speaker 3: explosive plays. forcing everything underneath, while Alabama, on the other hand,
- 17:18Speaker 3: that's been a bit leaky for them. So that's something
- 17:21Speaker 3: to watch coming up this week. And I have a
- 17:23Speaker 3: question for you all about Georgia. You look at Kirby Smart.
- 17:29Speaker 3: When he takes over and then he wins those national championships,
- 17:33Speaker 3: it appeared at that time, that this was the heir
- 17:37Speaker 3: to the throne, right? That we were going to trade
- 17:40Speaker 3: one empire for another and that he was going to
- 17:42Speaker 3: rip off national championships at a rate that Nick Saban did. Now,
- 17:46Speaker 3: he hasn't done that. And you can say, oh, well,
- 17:48Speaker 3: it's because the sport changed underneath him, around him. And
- 17:51Speaker 3: I think that is true. However, I think there's another
- 17:53Speaker 3: element here. And that is Todd Munkin and Stetson Bennett.
- 17:59Speaker 3: When you look at when Georgia finally got over the hump,
- 18:03Speaker 3: Munkin and Stetson Bennett were as powerful of a combination
- 18:07Speaker 3: as we have ever seen in college football when it
- 18:09Speaker 3: came to big games specifically, playoffs, national championships. They always
- 18:14Speaker 3: showed up. They always balled out. Look what Munkin's gone
- 18:18Speaker 3: on to do. He was great at Southern Miss. He
- 18:20Speaker 3: was excellent with Lamar. He's now got the Browns sitting
- 18:24Speaker 3: at 3-1. Like, you go from Munkin to Bobo, it's
- 18:27Speaker 3: never been as good. And for all the talent you've
- 18:29Speaker 3: had at quarterback, nobody ever did it like that walk-on
- 18:33Speaker 3: kid that never should have been able to. So, like,
- 18:35Speaker 3: I think there's some more to be said about it's
- 18:38Speaker 3: not just the sport changing around Georgia where they haven't
- 18:41Speaker 3: managed to occupy the heights. Like, maybe Smart never was
- 18:45Speaker 3: fully Saban, just 90% of him.
- 18:49Speaker 4: No, his staff has clearly been fantastic. And I remember
- 18:52Speaker 4: having a conversation with Kirby last year, and I think
- 18:56Speaker 4: I phrased it like, who is your all-time favorite player
- 19:00Speaker 4: or the one player that you wish you could have
- 19:03Speaker 4: on your team this year or every year? And Brock Bowers,
- 19:07Speaker 4: I think, he's like all of them. But Brock Bowers,
- 19:10Speaker 4: just because I like having fantastic players, I think You
- 19:15Speaker 4: mentioned Bobo and Bunkin and Stetson. I think the impact
- 19:19Speaker 4: that Bowers had on that team. And that's probably the
- 19:22Speaker 4: reason why they didn't win three straight national titles. It's
- 19:25Speaker 4: because Bowers got hurt in that 24 season, was it? Yeah.
- 19:31Speaker 4: And then did not get back to the playoff that year.
- 19:34Speaker 4: So they lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship, and
- 19:36Speaker 4: they should have been in the playoff, but they weren't.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Long story, but... But I think the importance of Bowers
- 19:41Speaker 4: to that team is really hurt the passing attack. You
- 19:45Speaker 4: look at the last couple of years, the ability to
- 19:47Speaker 4: stretch the ball downfield hasn't been there. It's been a
- 19:49Speaker 4: little bit. better this year with some of the young
- 19:51Speaker 4: kids that they have, and we'll see what happens on
- 19:54Speaker 4: Saturday night.
- 19:54Speaker 2: I want to talk about Kalen DeBoer in a second,
- 19:56Speaker 2: but T-Bob, just so we're clear on what it is
- 19:59Speaker 2: you're saying here, is it time to start questioning Kirby Smart?
- 20:02Speaker 2: Is that what you're saying? I mean, because we haven't
- 20:04Speaker 2: seen the results we thought we were going to see?
- 20:07Speaker 4: I guess, I think what I'm saying more so. He's
- 20:10Speaker 4: won the SEC title the last two years. Listen, I
- 20:13Speaker 4: didn't ask you. I asked him.
- 20:14Speaker 3: He's being judged against an impossible bar here. He's being
- 20:20Speaker 3: judged against the Saban bar, right? But it's because it
- 20:25Speaker 3: looked so clear that he was going to be that guy.
- 20:28Speaker 3: He's still an incredible coach. And I'm not, look, Kirby
- 20:31Speaker 3: Smart's still a top-tier coach, but the bottom line is
- 20:35Speaker 3: between the sport changing around him and him continuing to
- 20:38Speaker 3: stick with.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Bobo for better or worse.
- 20:40Speaker 3: It's kind of Georgia fans, that's their patsy, their scapegoat,
- 20:44Speaker 3: that's who they blame everything on. There might be something
- 20:48Speaker 3: there when you look at what's happened to the offense
- 20:52Speaker 3: since Munkin. Now, last year, they were anemic when it
- 20:56Speaker 3: came to explosive plays. They're very efficient, fundamental. They have
- 20:59Speaker 3: improved there this year. And I wonder, again, if that's
- 21:03Speaker 3: going to be the difference in this game, Georgia's ability
- 21:05Speaker 3: to be explosive against Alabama's defense and Georgia's ability to
- 21:09Speaker 3: stop Alabama from being explosive when they're on offense.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Bear, now I'll ask you.
- 21:14Speaker 6: That was incredibly rude of me. Now I'll ask you, Bear.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Go ahead. Take it away. I'll jump in whenever the
- 21:24Speaker 4: hell I want. My name's on the pod. Your name's
- 21:27Speaker 4: on the... T-Bob's just a guest. He's a weekly swinging
- 21:31Speaker 4: door guy who comes in and out.
- 21:33Speaker 2: I was trying not to be rude to our guests.
- 21:35Speaker 2: That's what I was trying to do.
- 21:36Speaker 4: I'm sorry. You're right. I should be more welcoming and
- 21:40Speaker 4: more open to people who are donating and generous with
- 21:44Speaker 4: their time to join us each week here. There are
- 21:48Speaker 4: people that I'll tell you that... Kirby's the reason why
- 21:52Speaker 4: Bobo has been so conservative on offense and they really
- 21:56Speaker 4: haven't stretched the field. There are people out there that
- 21:59Speaker 4: want to blame Bobo, but there are some out there
- 22:02Speaker 4: that think it's Kirby's cloud and knowing that he can
- 22:06Speaker 4: win with his defense and win the surest way, don't
- 22:09Speaker 4: turn the ball over, punt, field position, all of that.
- 22:13Speaker 4: They're better when they just go balls to the wall.
- 22:17Speaker 4: and just let letter. If I can remember the, the
- 22:19Speaker 4: Kirby interview on the sideline before that, uh, championship game
- 22:22Speaker 4: a couple of years ago in TCU, when he's dropping
- 22:25Speaker 4: all sorts of four letter words. And I'm like, let
- 22:27Speaker 4: me dial up the computer right now. Punch up Georgia
- 22:31Speaker 4: minus 14 and a half Georgia. Well, whatever it is, bang, repeat, repeat, repeat.
- 22:35Speaker 4: And the game was over quickly. So let it rip.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Weather's nice. Let it rip. Go out, win the game.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Mikey, I put it on the poll. Is it hard
- 22:42Speaker 1: to take a guy seriously when his last name is Bobo?
- 22:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it's tough. It's tough, too.
- 22:51Speaker 2: I do want to ask you guys quickly here just
- 22:53Speaker 2: about Kalen DeBoer because he's been on the hot seat
- 22:56Speaker 2: since he arrived at Alabama. And I'm wondering here, and
- 23:00Speaker 2: they have a tough schedule, man. They played Mississippi State
- 23:02Speaker 2: last week. They have, of course, Georgia this week. Then
- 23:05Speaker 2: it's at Tennessee, I think. Texas A & M after that, LSU.
- 23:10Speaker 2: If Kalen DeBoer wins this game against Georgia, if the
- 23:13Speaker 2: game is played because the weather is that bad, but
- 23:15Speaker 2: if he wins this game, are we done talking about
- 23:18Speaker 2: Kalen DeBoer being on the hot seat at Alabama, or
- 23:21Speaker 2: does he need to do more after winning this game?
- 23:24Speaker 3: No, it's– I mean, we mentioned Kirby being judged against
- 23:26Speaker 3: an impossible bar, but he's judged against Saban by proxy, right?
- 23:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Kalen has directly inherited the seat. Yes.
- 23:36Speaker 3: So, no, unfortunately, I mean, Alabama won a playoff game
- 23:41Speaker 3: last year, and everybody acts like it was a failure
- 23:43Speaker 3: of a season.
- 23:44Speaker 4: You're right, yes.
- 23:44Speaker 3: So, like, this win will be huge, but they did
- 23:47Speaker 3: it last year. They beat Georgia, and it didn't make
- 23:50Speaker 3: them amazing. Two years in a row they beat them. Obviously,
- 23:52Speaker 3: Nick was a couple years back.
- 23:53Speaker 4: Yes. Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 3: It's, I mean, it's, it's, I, I believe what Kayla
- 23:56Speaker 3: DeBoer is two and one against Kirby smart, right? So
- 23:58Speaker 3: the only smart is 60 and five in the sec
- 24:02Speaker 3: DeBoer is 12 and four, but he's winning this series.
- 24:04Speaker 1: All right. This is fascinating.
- 24:05Speaker 2: So the only way that conversation stops happening is if
- 24:08Speaker 2: Kayla and the board not only beats Georgia, but runs
- 24:11Speaker 2: the table and plays in a national championship game, wins
- 24:14Speaker 2: a national championship.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Like where do we draw the line here?
- 24:18Speaker 4: I mean, he did. I mean, I know it was Washington,
- 24:20Speaker 4: but he did play for a national championship out there. And,
- 24:23Speaker 4: I think the perception of what happened last year at
- 24:28Speaker 4: Alabama is the issue. You got completely embarrassed in the
- 24:34Speaker 4: SEC championship game against Georgia. You were inept on offense.
- 24:39Speaker 4: And then against Indiana in the Ruiz Bowl, you just
- 24:43Speaker 4: went out. And I don't want to throw the Q
- 24:45Speaker 4: word out there, but. Indiana just manhandled them and looked
- 24:49Speaker 4: like they enjoyed doing it, and they sent a message,
- 24:52Speaker 4: and it was not the Alabama that we were used
- 24:55Speaker 4: to seeing. I think this year's Alabama team reminds me
- 25:00Speaker 4: a little bit of some of those good Washington teams
- 25:02Speaker 4: he had with Panics and his ability to get the
- 25:05Speaker 4: ball out to all the weapons that potentially had. Obviously,
- 25:08Speaker 4: Panics wasn't a great runner, but I think, Mikey, I
- 25:12Speaker 4: think that this Alabama team reminds me A little bit
- 25:15Speaker 4: more of maybe Kalen DeBoer having some of the pieces
- 25:20Speaker 4: that he feels a little bit more comfortable with this year.
- 25:22Speaker 5: I would just say if Alabama got to the championship
- 25:26Speaker 5: game and lost, the only thing that would happen is
- 25:28Speaker 5: Kalen DeBoer would get the moniker of somebody who can't do.
- 25:31Speaker 4: It in the championship game.
- 25:32Speaker 5: Because he would be 0-2 and the people in Alabama
- 25:35Speaker 5: would constantly be reminding.
- 25:37Speaker 4: Him of that.
- 25:37Speaker 3: Yep.
- 25:37Speaker 4: That is kind of funny.
- 25:38Speaker 3: It might actually be better for Kayla DeBoer to get to, like,
- 25:41Speaker 3: the final four. Then he's threading the needle perfectly, and
- 25:47Speaker 3: it's like, okay, yeah, step forward. The first Kayla DeBoer
- 25:50Speaker 3: team goes to a final four. Like, okay, we can
- 25:54Speaker 3: believe in this guy once again.
- 25:56Speaker 4: So, T-Bob, are you a Dreamland guy, or are you
- 26:00Speaker 4: an Ultra Bold guy? Are we talking barbecue? Of course
- 26:04Speaker 4: we are. I gotta be honest, man.
- 26:07Speaker 3: Um, I lived in Louisiana for too long and in
- 26:10Speaker 3: the boot, we are not known for our barbecue. I've
- 26:13Speaker 3: never eaten at Archibald's. I used to really enjoy dreamland
- 26:15Speaker 3: back in the day. So kind of by default, I'd
- 26:18Speaker 3: have to answer dreamland.
- 26:19Speaker 4: You, you, you, you never knew you and you in
- 26:21Speaker 4: the hat or never snuck out to Archibald's on a, uh,
- 26:24Speaker 4: Friday and T-Town? No, no, no.
- 26:28Speaker 3: The less amount of time that I could spend in Tuscaloosa,
- 26:32Speaker 3: that rat hole shit city, the better for me.
- 26:37Speaker 4: Guys, I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Now that said, no,
- 26:39Speaker 4: I'm not really kidding. I hate Alabama.
- 26:43Speaker 3: That said, this is going to be tough because now
- 26:46Speaker 3: nobody's going to take my prediction seriously.
- 26:49Speaker 4: I think this is a very good game. Well, it's
- 26:50Speaker 4: soaked in bias.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Why would they?
- 26:54Speaker 3: I think home field advantage evens this game out a bit.
- 26:58Speaker 3: But I think this Georgia team is a bit too fundamental,
- 27:00Speaker 3: a bit too complete.
- 27:01Speaker 4: On the line.
- 27:02Speaker 3: And I think it is on the line where they
- 27:04Speaker 3: have the slightest of edges and they'll slightly outclass them.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Kind of like the composure and experience of Gunnar Stockton here.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Give me Georgia on the road in a very close game,
- 27:15Speaker 3: like a three-point win.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Agreed. We are in agreement there. Georgia gets the road win.
- 27:21Speaker 4: I'm with you. All the same reasons.
- 27:23Speaker 1: I feel awful. I've never felt worse about liking Alabama.
- 27:27Speaker 4: No, that's probably good. It's like the graphic at the
- 27:30Speaker 4: bottom of the screen where it's like all the same logos. Logo, logo, logo, logo, logo, logo.
- 27:35Speaker 4: And then you put the final score up and it's
- 27:39Speaker 4: the one that wasn't picked.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Well, not only that, but Georgia's been favored the last
- 27:42Speaker 3: six times in these games and Alabama's won four.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Right. Now, Georgia is favored this one. Dog, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Georgia's the dog. Yeah, bam, they're finally favored once again.
- 27:53Speaker 3: All right, so let's go take a quick break. When
- 27:56Speaker 3: we get back, we still got Red River rivalry. More
- 27:59Speaker 3: college football with Stu Gatz and the Bear next. All right.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Welcome back. College football show. It's you got the bear.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Next list, guys.
- 28:30Speaker 3: I'm actually getting to cross off a college football bucket
- 28:33Speaker 3: list thing this weekend. Work is sending me down to Texas.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I'm heading to the state fair for the Red River rivalry.
- 28:43Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 28:44Speaker 3: Oklahoma, Texas. It's going to be fantastic. I hope we
- 28:47Speaker 3: get a good game. Unfortunately, it does appear that one
- 28:52Speaker 3: team is markedly better than the other. I got an
- 28:57Speaker 3: avenue of hope to give Sooner fans, but Bear, what's
- 29:00Speaker 3: your read on Arch going against his Sooner defense?
- 29:04Speaker 4: I'm just hoping to see them play a complete game,
- 29:08Speaker 4: fundamentally sound, no penalties, just kind of a clean game.
- 29:13Speaker 4: We haven't seen that really from Texas in the offense
- 29:17Speaker 4: so far. And you talk about just a complete embarrassment,
- 29:21Speaker 4: like if you're ever going to bounce back in pride
- 29:25Speaker 4: off of what Oklahoma showed us in that game against Georgia.
- 29:29Speaker 4: That was just a terrible, terrible effort. The game was
- 29:32Speaker 4: over quickly. Mistakes, turnovers, Mateer looked on Arbuckle. Again, it's
- 29:37Speaker 4: kind of like the Jason Beck Underwood type of deal there.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Arbuckle should be taking a little bit more heat, I think,
- 29:44Speaker 4: than he is for sure. I know Mateer was his guy,
- 29:47Speaker 4: his previous stop as well, but they look lost right now.
- 29:53Speaker 4: defensively you would assume that they would be a little
- 29:57Speaker 4: bit better. I think that was a terrible spot for
- 30:00Speaker 4: them on the road in Georgia. It would not surprise
- 30:03Speaker 4: me to see Oklahoma hang around a little bit in
- 30:06Speaker 4: this game just because I still can't get there with Texas.
- 30:10Speaker 4: It's a mental block that I have. I just see
- 30:15Speaker 4: penalties in the wrong time. Defensively, they're awesome. It feels
- 30:19Speaker 4: like kind of a very low-scoring game. If I were
- 30:23Speaker 4: looking here, which I think would favor kind of Oklahoma
- 30:26Speaker 4: hanging around, the big favorite, number one in a tighter
- 30:29Speaker 4: than expected game. We'll see ultimately how that plays out.
- 30:33Speaker 4: But enjoy the Texas State Fair, man. Walk around, take
- 30:37Speaker 4: that all in. Get yourself a corny dog and whatever
- 30:41Speaker 4: other fried things that they're throwing in the fryer. Snickers, Oreos.
- 30:45Speaker 2: He's been to all these games. He has been to
- 30:49Speaker 2: all these games. Who got the Alabama assignment? Because so
- 30:53Speaker 2: big cat is sending you to the.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Texas State Fair.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Who drew Alabama and Georgia?
- 30:58Speaker 4: Yeah, no, that's a good question. I'm not sure. But
- 31:00Speaker 4: I would, you know, to be fair.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I would rather go to the Red River game. Because, again,
- 31:07Speaker 3: the pomp and circumstance, even if the game's not good,
- 31:13Speaker 3: being at the fair, the 50-50.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Crowd, what it's like.
- 31:16Speaker 3: I'm going to have a cowboy hat, boots, belt buckle.
- 31:20Speaker 3: I'm going to be all in, cosplaying like I'm a cowboy.
- 31:22Speaker 3: I can't wait.
- 31:24Speaker 1: You're going to go.
- 31:25Speaker 4: Like Jorts and wife beater as well? No, no, no.
- 31:28Speaker 4: I saved that for Gainesville. Okay.
- 31:32Speaker 1: Plus, there's no hurricane coming to Austin as well.
- 31:36Speaker 4: We're going to see Mincy stranded in Tuscaloosa doing weather
- 31:42Speaker 4: channel updates.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Bear, don't you think your lack of confidence in Texas
- 31:46Speaker 2: stems from one thing? Every week you tune in expecting
- 31:50Speaker 2: to see a Manning play quarterback. And it's not really
- 31:52Speaker 2: a Manning playing quarterback, you know?
- 31:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it's Cooper's kid. It's not Eli's kid.
- 31:59Speaker 2: I'm just saying he hasn't been good enough. We expected great,
- 32:02Speaker 2: and he hasn't been great.
- 32:03Speaker 4: That's all. No, he hasn't. Correct. Yes. You're right. The
- 32:07Speaker 4: expectations placed on this kid were through the roof, right
- 32:11Speaker 4: or wrong. And he played at a small... I mean... T-Bob,
- 32:16Speaker 4: you're familiar with the level of competition that he played
- 32:19Speaker 4: with in high school. It wasn't necessarily the greatest competition
- 32:22Speaker 4: to get him ready to be able to play right
- 32:24Speaker 4: out of there, right? But no, yes, you're correct.
- 32:27Speaker 3: But here's the other side of that coin is he's
- 32:32Speaker 3: now 5-1 against the last six top ten opponents that
- 32:36Speaker 3: he's faced. including a 20-point comeback against Ohio State, who
- 32:42Speaker 3: may be the first or second-best team in the country
- 32:44Speaker 3: when this thing is all said and done. Like, I
- 32:46Speaker 3: understand on a play-to-play basis he maybe hasn't been great,
- 32:50Speaker 3: but we almost focus on that so much that we
- 32:54Speaker 3: take away from Texas as a whole.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 32:56Speaker 3: And the bottom line is Texas is still a championship-caliber team,
- 33:00Speaker 3: and it starts with the defense. And so if you're
- 33:02Speaker 3: telling me, like, I don't need him to be full
- 33:04Speaker 3: Peyton or Eli. If he could just be Arch, which
- 33:07Speaker 3: he has been, I believe his career has trended in
- 33:10Speaker 3: a direction where he's more than capable of winning a
- 33:13Speaker 3: national championship. And last year, this Texas defense had John
- 33:17Speaker 3: Mateer in hell. They picked him three times. They sacked
- 33:20Speaker 3: him five. Colin Simmons, it'll never happen, but... He should
- 33:24Speaker 3: maybe be in the discussion with Jeremiah Smith as like
- 33:27Speaker 3: a potential Heisman winner with how good he's played this year.
- 33:31Speaker 3: So I've never sold my arch stock. I still believe
- 33:36Speaker 3: in Texas. But there is one interesting point here, and
- 33:41Speaker 3: that is the turnovers. And I know this is cliche,
- 33:44Speaker 3: but every now and then there's a game where it
- 33:46Speaker 3: rings more true than others. Right now Oklahoma is dead
- 33:49Speaker 3: last in the conference turnover margin.
- 33:51Speaker 4: They're awful.
- 33:52Speaker 3: Go look at the Georgia box score. You see the
- 33:54Speaker 3: final score, 41-13. Terrible, right? However, they lost the turnover
- 33:59Speaker 3: battle 4-0. If you look at Gunnar Stockton's stats, he
- 34:03Speaker 3: was very pedestrian. If you look at the entire box score,
- 34:06Speaker 3: they're completely even statistically, except for turnover. So there's a
- 34:11Speaker 3: world out here. Because Arch is not a world beater.
- 34:14Speaker 3: where if Oklahoma takes care of the ball, Bear, this
- 34:17Speaker 3: could be like some sort of 16-13 battle that, as
- 34:22Speaker 3: you said, would at least give Oklahoma that puncher's chance
- 34:25Speaker 3: of creating an upset that it doesn't look like they
- 34:27Speaker 3: have a great opportunity to do so.
- 34:29Speaker 4: It totally will, because if you look at Oklahoma's offense,
- 34:33Speaker 4: the way they've been this year, they're like dead last
- 34:36Speaker 4: in so many things, but Texas is very, very middling,
- 34:40Speaker 4: so it's not like... maybe the defense will be good
- 34:44Speaker 4: enough to just completely suffocate. Um, Oh, you, but wouldn't
- 34:50Speaker 4: surprise me. How about the 25th anniversary of Roy Williams
- 34:53Speaker 4: playing Superman and that 2001 Red River game and, uh, the,
- 34:58Speaker 4: the tip and layman in the end zone, another, give me,
- 35:00Speaker 4: give us a nice 14, three type game again. That
- 35:03Speaker 4: would be great. Uh, yeah, I just, I just want
- 35:06Speaker 4: a good game. I would love to get to see one.
- 35:08Speaker 3: We'll see that said, uh, What I'm asking for, I
- 35:12Speaker 3: had to really extend myself and do a lot of
- 35:15Speaker 3: mental gymnastics to get Oklahoma into that competitive scenario. I
- 35:19Speaker 3: think it's more likely than not that Arch actually shows up,
- 35:23Speaker 3: goes double birds to all you, and I think that
- 35:26Speaker 3: Texas handles Oklahoma.
- 35:27Speaker 4: Colin Simmons watered the grass again?
- 35:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I did find that interesting because you said— Texas
- 35:34Speaker 3: gets you close, but you can't quite get there. I mean,
- 35:36Speaker 3: if Colin Simmons can't get you there, Bear, I don't know.
- 35:39Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know if anybody's going to be
- 35:43Speaker 4: able to. Not even Rasputin.
- 35:51Speaker 6: A second Rasputin reference.
- 35:56Speaker 4: It's a good run. We've been talking about the Constitution
- 35:59Speaker 4: with Mario. We've been talking about Rasputin. We get a
- 36:02Speaker 4: little of everything. Speaking of great runs, you, my friend, Bear,
- 36:26Speaker 4: you're on a great run.
- 36:27Speaker 2: I mean, I am telling you, Mikey, he is on fire.
- 36:31Speaker 2: We've been doing this with Bear, not this show, but
- 36:33Speaker 2: having Bear on for years, and I feel like this
- 36:36Speaker 2: is the best year he's ever had. So with that
- 36:38Speaker 2: being said, I don't want to break up how we
- 36:40Speaker 2: did it last week because it worked.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Okay.
- 36:42Speaker 2: So metal stand of picks here from the Bear, bronze, silver, gold,
- 36:47Speaker 2: headed into a big week six.
- 36:48Speaker 1: What do you got for us?
- 36:50Speaker 4: Bronze, I'm going to give you Akron. Plus, uh, I
- 36:54Speaker 4: believe it's six and a half against Eastern Michigan. Yes. Games.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Listen, bear, bear takes games. You would never even look at,
- 37:01Speaker 2: or even think about looking at, I mean, how about that?
- 37:03Speaker 4: Akron and Eastern Michigan and Eastern Michigan is one of
- 37:09Speaker 4: my team, Chris Creighton and, uh, that, and, uh, That staff,
- 37:13Speaker 4: they got a big win last week.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Sneaky talent.
- 37:15Speaker 4: And now they're a little bit in the role of
- 37:18Speaker 4: a favorite against Akron, who might not– here's a rigging endorsement.
- 37:24Speaker 4: Akron might not be terrible. That might be– A real
- 37:29Speaker 4: reason to play the Zips here.
- 37:30Speaker 1: They'll take it.
- 37:31Speaker 4: Getting six and a half here. Give me Akron plus
- 37:34Speaker 4: the points on the bronze level. Silver medal, I'm going
- 37:38Speaker 4: to go UCF.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Wow.
- 37:40Speaker 4: The Knight-Scott-Frost team getting 10 at Oklahoma State. They played
- 37:46Speaker 4: well last week against Houston. Nearly pulled an upset on
- 37:49Speaker 4: the road. They played in a terrible weather situation at
- 37:53Speaker 4: Pitt earlier in the year. Nearly beat Pitt. double digits,
- 37:57Speaker 4: but I think Oklahoma state is good, but that might
- 38:00Speaker 4: be a few too many points. And then gold medal play. Ooh,
- 38:05Speaker 4: give me Indiana. I'm laying the seven and a half. Wow.
- 38:08Speaker 4: How can, I mean, they've won what 21 straight games
- 38:12Speaker 4: or whatever, whatever the hell it is. They're laying seven
- 38:14Speaker 4: and a half here against the Nebraska team. That's lost
- 38:17Speaker 4: what 30 in a row against ranked teams rules lost
- 38:20Speaker 4: like 20 in a row against ranked teams. They're like,
- 38:23Speaker 4: they haven't beaten a top 10 team since, uh, Going back,
- 38:27Speaker 4: I think they're 3-22 against top 10 teams since they
- 38:31Speaker 4: played for the national title in 2001. They got to
- 38:35Speaker 4: do it in order for me to believe it. In
- 38:39Speaker 4: Kurt Cignetti, we trust. I laid the points here. They're
- 38:41Speaker 4: not going to be too happy, I'm sure, when they
- 38:43Speaker 4: see me in Lincoln. How about Cignetti schedules someone? They
- 38:47Speaker 4: didn't last year. It didn't matter.
- 38:50Speaker 1: No, I know.
- 38:51Speaker 4: I get it. I get it. Separate conversation. I hate it, though.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I hate it, though.
- 38:56Speaker 1: He's holding the trophy, Bear, at Indiana.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I know. I hate that, too.
- 39:02Speaker 3: So gold medal game, as you said, Bear, Indiana-Nebraska. I
- 39:07Speaker 3: got an interesting question for two different games here.
- 39:09Speaker 4: So you have that one.
- 39:11Speaker 3: And then you look at UCLA-Oregon, ranked on ranked. UCLA,
- 39:15Speaker 3: one of the surprises of the Big Ten. I love
- 39:17Speaker 3: Bill Connolly's work out of ESPN, right? He does fantastic work.
- 39:20Speaker 3: He has all of his own analytics and whatnot. He
- 39:23Speaker 3: assigned his system, spit out percentage numbers on the chance
- 39:29Speaker 3: that a team in the Big Ten and the SEC
- 39:31Speaker 3: would win 10 games. And right now in the Big Ten,
- 39:36Speaker 3: it's Indiana, Ohio State, and then immediately afterwards, It's UCLA
- 39:41Speaker 3: and Nebraska. I mean, damn near 50% bear. So who
- 39:45Speaker 3: do you believe in more, out of UCLA and Nebraska,
- 39:48Speaker 3: like which team has a better chance of finding their.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Way to 10 wins? And if they do, we would
- 39:53Speaker 4: imagine making the college football playoff. I believe it's UCLA.
- 39:58Speaker 4: You look at a team that average starting field position
- 40:02Speaker 4: turnover is down. Their passing attack has not been great.
- 40:05Speaker 4: They're really going to need Knight to continue running as
- 40:09Speaker 4: well as they have, but they're a team that hasn't
- 40:11Speaker 4: been hurting themselves with turnovers. They're making the big opportune plays.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Can that stay up? This feels like a game this week.
- 40:18Speaker 4: I don't know if you've ever, like when you've played
- 40:21Speaker 4: or when you've covered games or looked at whatever, this
- 40:24Speaker 4: feels either like a game that UCLA wins outright or
- 40:28Speaker 4: they lose by 30. It doesn't feel like there's any
- 40:30Speaker 4: in between here for the Bruins, but give them a
- 40:35Speaker 4: loss this week. We'll play the old Mike and the
- 40:37Speaker 4: Mad Dog WFA and give them a lost dog game
- 40:39Speaker 4: that I used to love listening to. I'm sure Stu
- 40:41Speaker 4: did as well, but losing Oregon. Okay. That's a lot.
- 40:46Speaker 4: And maybe you lose to USC at the end of
- 40:48Speaker 4: the year. That's 10 and two. And that's going to
- 40:51Speaker 4: put you in the conversation. Like they're going to be
- 40:52Speaker 4: favored in all those other games. I think they'll probably
- 40:55Speaker 4: be favored in the big house at that point in
- 40:57Speaker 4: the year. I think 10 and two is really on the,
- 41:01Speaker 4: on the radar for you. So I think you still
- 41:02Speaker 4: get a really nice price on them to, to make
- 41:05Speaker 4: the playoffs. So I am more of a believer in Chesney, UCLA,
- 41:09Speaker 4: that I certainly am Nebraska right now.
- 41:11Speaker 2: T-Bob, I'm with Bear because after Oregon, win or lose,
- 41:14Speaker 2: but if they lose, the schedule really eases up. Nebraska, man,
- 41:17Speaker 2: it just gets tricky. I mean, it's Indiana, it's Oregon,
- 41:20Speaker 2: it's Ohio State, it's Iowa. I cannot see Nebraska getting
- 41:24Speaker 2: to 10 wins.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Yeah, no, probably not. So on that UCLA-Oregon game, I
- 41:29Speaker 3: think in terms of narratives, this might be one of
- 41:33Speaker 3: the biggest issues gaps that i've seen in terms of
- 41:38Speaker 3: like the disparity of what a win and loss means
- 41:40Speaker 3: for each team because oregon's already suffered the early season
- 41:44Speaker 3: up at oklahoma state right if they lose this game
- 41:46Speaker 3: they're functionally playoff dead not mathematically but functionally right however
- 41:51Speaker 3: if they win this game we probably vault them back
- 41:55Speaker 3: into the top tier conversation yeah we're like okay they
- 41:58Speaker 3: had an early misstep no they're fine they're championship threat
- 42:01Speaker 3: on the other hand UCLA has a little bit of
- 42:04Speaker 3: a Mississippi State opportunity. Right now, they're existing as a
- 42:08Speaker 3: very exciting, very fun story. Bob Chesney doing his Signetti,
- 42:13Speaker 3: Indiana impression at a school that's been destitute for years.
- 42:16Speaker 3: If they were to win this game, all of a sudden,
- 42:18Speaker 3: that is a resounding statement to college football that we're
- 42:22Speaker 3: not just a cute story. We are legit football. And
- 42:24Speaker 3: if they lose, it's something a bit more murky. So
- 42:28Speaker 3: I cannot wait. This might sneakily be my favorite game
- 42:33Speaker 3: of the weekend outside of the Georgia-Alabama heavyweight matchup.
- 42:37Speaker 4: Do you think there's a little bit of maybe question
- 42:42Speaker 4: this week about Oregon? I think we all came away
- 42:46Speaker 4: super impressed with what they did at USC last But
- 42:50Speaker 4: off of what USC did last week against Washington, they
- 42:52Speaker 4: were in a game very easily could have lost that.
- 42:56Speaker 4: Are we maybe just kind of like a little hesitancy
- 42:59Speaker 4: on Oregon? Like, okay, they beat USC, but kind of
- 43:06Speaker 4: maybe there's still some things going on there that maybe
- 43:09Speaker 4: the fact that they played USC just kind of messed.
- 43:11Speaker 4: I'm really, really intrigued. I'm with you, T-Bob. Like this
- 43:14Speaker 4: game this week I think is going to tell us
- 43:16Speaker 4: a whole lot about both of these teams.
- 43:18Speaker 3: Well, and you look, I mean, there's still the Dylan
- 43:20Speaker 3: Raiola element, which makes all this crazy. Dante Moore did
- 43:23Speaker 3: return to practice. It's unclear who's going to get the
- 43:26Speaker 3: start there. Raiola was fantastic against USC when he came in,
- 43:30Speaker 3: but is that going to be a week-to-week consistency?
- 43:34Speaker 4: That remains to be seen.
- 43:36Speaker 3: So, yeah, and then plus combine that with the Boise game,
- 43:39Speaker 3: Oregon barely won, losing to Oklahoma State. Yeah, they're a
- 43:42Speaker 3: hard-to-figure-out team as it stands right now, but this weekend's
- 43:46Speaker 3: a great opportunity for them to– clear up the picture
- 43:50Speaker 3: a bit.
- 43:51Speaker 4: There it is, guys.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Get ready for another big weekend here in college football.
- 43:54Speaker 3: This is the College Football Show with Stu Gatz with
- 43:56Speaker 3: the Bear.
- 43:57Speaker 4: We love you.
- 43:58Speaker 3: Best of luck with all your bets this weekend, and
- 44:01Speaker 4: We'll see you next week.
