- 0:00The waking consciousness takes notice of only a very small
- 0:04fraction of all the impressions that reach the senses, not all
- 0:09impressions or direct sense impressions, as some impinge
- 0:13directly on the aura or on the mental substance without
- 0:17involving the five external senses.
- 0:21Of those directly noted, only a small percentage are actually
- 0:25accepted consciously and acted upon, while we do not generally
- 0:30take cognizance of them. These impressions are captured
- 0:34and held in the subconscient being when the waking
- 0:39consciousness withdraws and along with it the active mental
- 0:43control that it exerts. The unnoticed and undigested
- 0:47impressions have the ability to rise and take the form of dreams
- 0:52in many cases, as well as a general restlessness during
- 0:57sleep. When we live an isolated life
- 1:01away from modern media and the energetic force of modern
- 1:05society. We obviously do not capture as
- 1:08many of these impressions directly as we do if we are
- 1:12actively involved in the external life of the world, for
- 1:16example, as the world has become hypersexualized in its imagery
- 1:21and energy. Even those who are focused on
- 1:25other things or who actively reject sexual energies from
- 1:29their being are exposed to the impressions that get embedded in
- 1:34the subconcient layers of the being.
- 1:36They are to arise when the control is absent or when
- 1:41somehow triggered by some past experience, event, or formation.
- 1:48The spiritual seeker may avoid sexual expression or focus and
- 1:53yet have an experience in dream. This can be seen as a highly
- 1:57positive fact as it implies that the sexual tendency has been
- 2:02mostly reduced or eliminated from the act of consciousness.
- 2:07The risk, and therefore the area for required vigilance, is that
- 2:13when the sexual dream arises, the seeker will accept it or
- 2:16even allow it to gain a foothold in the waking consciousness
- 2:20through action or through imagination or visualization.
- 2:26The sexual impulse, as it is so deeply bound to the physical and
- 2:31vital nature, will always attempt to re establish itself
- 2:35through environmental pressure, through the rising of sexual
- 2:39impulses in the subconscious, and from there an attempt to
- 2:43obtain the acquiescence and active support of the waking
- 2:48consciousness. At a certain point in the sadhna
- 2:53it is possible for the seeker to become conscious even in sleep,
- 2:57to maintain his dedicated aspiration and thereby to reject
- 3:02the pressure if it tries to arise in dreams.
- 3:06Note that becoming conscious in sleep does not mean fighting to
- 3:10stay awake, but rather to infuse the aspiration so completely
- 3:15into the consciousness that it permeates even the subconscious
- 3:20realm of the being. Sri Orobindo observes quote.
- 3:27This kind of sexual attack through sleep does not depend
- 3:30very much on food or anything else that is outward.
- 3:34It is a mechanical habit in the subcontinent when the sexual
- 3:38impulse is rejected or barred out in the waking thoughts and
- 3:42feelings. It comes in this form in sleep,
- 3:46for then there is only the subcontinent at work, and there
- 3:50is no conscious control. It is a sign of sexual desire,
- 3:55suppressed in the waking mind and vital, but not eliminated in
- 3:59the stuff of the physical nature.
- 4:03To eliminate it one must first be careful to harbour no sexual
- 4:07imagination or feeling in the waking state, next to put a
- 4:12strong will on the body, and especially on the sexual centre,
- 4:16that there should be nothing of the kind in sleep.
- 4:20This may not succeed at once, but if persevered in for a long
- 4:24time, it usually has a result. The subcontinent begins to obey.
