Transcript
- 0:00All right. Very pleased to be joined by
- 0:02Saint Louis basketball legend Louis McKinney junior.
- 0:05We're going to talk about all kinds of topics today.
- 0:07Louis, how you doing this morning?
- 0:09Charlie, I'm doing good. Thanks so much for having me on
- 0:12the show this morning. Oh, the the pleasure's all mine.
- 0:15Let's let's start with, of course, what's topical St.
- 0:19Louis, you your alma mater having an historic season 27 and
- 0:24four. We're recording here on a
- 0:26Thursday. They have the A 10 tournament,
- 0:28their game on Friday. I checked bracketology right
- 0:32now. We'll talk about that for the
- 0:34NCAA tournament. But just to start with, you just
- 0:37give us your thoughts on what's been an amazing season for the
- 0:39Billikens. Charlie, my thoughts are what a
- 0:42great group of young men we have representing Saint Louis
- 0:46University Billiken basketball. Hats off to the coach.
- 0:50He did a great job of pulling together a bunch of individual
- 0:53talent that have come together to create quite a collective
- 0:56group of basketball players. I think their greatest strength
- 1:00is that those guys actually believe in each other and
- 1:04collectively they contribute to make a great team.
- 1:08And let's talk a little bit about Josh Shirts.
- 1:11Yes, and, and Travis Ford had a nice run.
- 1:13We can even go back before that. I, I covered the team during the
- 1:16Rick Majerus years and then unfortunately after his passing,
- 1:20Jim Cruz and those teams that made three straight NCAA
- 1:23tournaments. But we're all assuming we're
- 1:26hoping the Billikens will get back to the Big Dance.
- 1:28Why do you think Josh Shirts has been the right guy here to lead
- 1:31them to this unbelievable year? Well, Josh shirt clearly is
- 1:36very, very well versed in regard to the entire basketball arena
- 1:42right now at the collegiate level.
- 1:44And I think you've got to have a coach that's well versed, that
- 1:46knows how to go out and identify the right players and how to
- 1:49attract them and know what's going to work best for the team
- 1:53and individually. You know, I'm not sure where
- 1:56these guys would fit in best, but it's Saint Louis University.
- 2:00They work very, very well together and that's all because
- 2:03of the coach making the right decisions and attracting them
- 2:06and convincing them they're working as a unit.
- 2:09They could become a very good basketball team and by far they
- 2:13are some of the best basketball team in the country right now.
- 2:16Yeah. So with this Billikens team,
- 2:19when you're watching them, who are you keeping your eye on?
- 2:22And we're going to talk about your career as well.
- 2:24Anybody on the court that you see a little bit of Lewis
- 2:27McKinney junior back in the day, they got a little bit.
- 2:29Any elements to your game? Well, you know, there are a
- 2:34number of guys on that team that look really good.
- 2:36I like Mcatry a lot. I like Quentin Jones a lot.
- 2:39Those guys have great mid range games.
- 2:41Those guys play with a great deal of intensity and those
- 2:44guys, they really work well as a unit.
- 2:47And, you know, just speaking about my days when I play, I had
- 2:49a great group of guys who worked around me as well.
- 2:52And collectively we did the best we could to add to the Billikens
- 2:56basketball legacy. I like all those guys.
- 3:00Of course, you can't help but not like the big guy Avila,
- 3:04right? I mean, he's a very unique type
- 3:06of a talent And, and I think they call him the collegiate
- 3:10Jokic. You know, that's, that's, that's
- 3:13quite a compliment. I I'll, I'll tell him he's a
- 3:15great ball player and he's got a lot to aspire to be like Jokic,
- 3:18But collectively I like them all.
- 3:21And I guess the guy who really does a good job, he's our local
- 3:24guy, Kelly things. He can come in and provide the
- 3:27spark plug that we need at the right time.
- 3:29So, you know, one guy who looked most like me on the floor, asked
- 3:33Howard. Hard to say, but collectively as
- 3:35a team they're doing a great job.
- 3:38And after the the last loss, Josh Shirts said his concern
- 3:42level was 10 out of 10. And I don't know if that's coach
- 3:45speak trying to motivate the guys entering tournament play.
- 3:49I checked Bracketology right before we started this interview
- 3:54and this is pretty cool, but we don't know what's exactly going
- 3:57to happen like this. But they had Slew as a 10 seed
- 4:00playing Kentucky right here in Saint Louis, which would be
- 4:04pretty awesome with Slew. With Saint Louis hosting an NCAA
- 4:08Tournament first and second round this year, how confident
- 4:11are you? Are you, are you a little
- 4:14nervous with the way the season ended?
- 4:15Are you pretty darn confident this Billikens team is going to
- 4:17have a strong postseason? Well, I want to believe that the
- 4:21billing is going to have a have a strong postseason, right?
- 4:25I mean, you learn a lot along the way.
- 4:27And the guys, they work so well together.
- 4:29They actually believe in each other a great deal.
- 4:31And I just think that, you know, sometimes, you know, your energy
- 4:34level can be somewhat not where you need it at the correct time.
- 4:39But I think with the experience that they've had, I see nothing
- 4:41but upside for the Philippines during the postseason.
- 4:44I think they figured it out now. They should have figured it out
- 4:46now and they're ready to go. And this is a a good problem to
- 4:50have. But when you have such a good
- 4:52season, other teams start looking at your coach.
- 4:56And there's been a lot of talk about Josh shirts.
- 4:58There's been a lot of discussion potentially about Saint Louis U
- 5:02and they're happy right now in the A10.
- 5:03But there's this Big East talk as well.
- 5:07Are you are you confident Saint Louis U will be able to hold on
- 5:10to to Josh shirts? It it seems like right now they
- 5:13will, but with more success. As we all know, it's a good
- 5:15problem to have, but other schools are going to be looking
- 5:18at them. You know, I'd like to say I'm
- 5:20confident, but it's a new, it's a new era in basketball, as you
- 5:25well know. And Josh Shirts came in.
- 5:27He has done a great job and other schools can't help but
- 5:31look at him in that regard. One of the things I think Josh
- 5:34Shirts has got to, you know, make a decision about is does he
- 5:37want to be a part of the Saint Louis sports community and the
- 5:41community of family? And a number of coaches have
- 5:44committed that. I know the previous coach did
- 5:46Travis Ford and I know Josh Schurz has that opportunity and
- 5:50in Saint Louis will embrace him. Will Saint Louis provide him
- 5:54with an opportunity for his program to expand into other
- 5:58conferences? I hope so.
- 5:59I hope we'll consider that. I think it would be great if we
- 6:02were to enter some other conferences.
- 6:04I know other conferences have to be looking, looking at our team
- 6:07after the season that we had. So am I confident that we can
- 6:11hold on to John Church? I'm confident that we can
- 6:13provide him with a very well wealthy community for him to
- 6:17stay in and to grow his family and to grow his career.
- 6:21And, and in a second here, we're going to talk about your career.
- 6:24But the reason I bring this up now is everything going on with
- 6:27Nil and me personally, I'm, I'm very happy that the players are
- 6:32getting compensated. I I'm very happy about that.
- 6:35I personally don't love that so many guys are transferring
- 6:39non-stop. I understand if you get to a
- 6:41place your coach leaves, you get somewhere.
- 6:44Maybe you need to to go down down a level, maybe you need to
- 6:47go up a level. But I feel like there's too much
- 6:50movement now. But again, I'm happy the players
- 6:52are getting paid. What do you think about this
- 6:55current landscape of college sports?
- 6:57I think you and I are on the same page.
- 6:58I think it's a good thing that the kids are getting paid.
- 7:02And I think it's not a good thing that they're transferring
- 7:06so much, you know, every season. I mean, it makes it really,
- 7:10really tough for a program, you know, to, to, to, to build for
- 7:15the future because every year they've got to try to reinvent
- 7:18themselves. And so I'm, I'm hoping that at
- 7:21some point we'll continue to build on what has started in
- 7:24terms of the NIL and the transport portal and we can
- 7:28start to nurture some young men in our program because most
- 7:33important is their education. And I can say that from my own
- 7:36personal experience, you know, you've got to focus in regard to
- 7:39your education. You got to make sure you come
- 7:41out of these programs with the support that you need from an
- 7:45education perspective, that if your basketball career doesn't
- 7:48take you to the next level, you can trans, transition into a
- 7:52successful career. And so I'm hoping that the
- 7:55portal and I'm hoping that the NC 2A takes all of that into
- 7:58consideration. They understand what's in the
- 8:00best interest of the kid as well as in the best interest of the
- 8:03program. What was it like for you playing
- 8:06for Saint Louis U in the 70s if people don't know about your
- 8:11great career? 20 point score multiple years
- 8:14I'm seeing here. Is this correct?
- 8:1540 inch vertical? Is that right back in the day?
- 8:18It was nice to think that I was getting that high, that's for
- 8:21sure. So what was it like playing for
- 8:24the Billikens back in the day? Well, it was great.
- 8:26And again, the Saint Louis community and the fans and the
- 8:29university, they, it really got behind the team and they made
- 8:33the US players really feel as though, you know, we were making
- 8:36a great contribution in terms of not just entertainment, but to
- 8:39the legacy of the Singlish University basketball program.
- 8:43But you know, number one, we focus on our education and, and
- 8:47most everyone on that team, you know, they, they, they came out
- 8:50of there with successful careers and I'm most proud of that at
- 8:54Singlish University. We played in the Missouri
- 8:57Valley. We are also independent one
- 8:59year, and we also went to Conference USA one year.
- 9:02So there was a lot of transition, a lot of
- 9:04uncertainty. But clearly Saint Louis
- 9:05University has made-up their mind that they want a successful
- 9:08program. They're committed to the
- 9:10program. The community is behind them.
- 9:12I mean, it's unbelievable when you go down to Shapeless Arena
- 9:16and watch the Billitons play, they're in the empty seat in the
- 9:19house and the fans are behind them and this is supporting
- 9:21them. And it's got to encourage the
- 9:23kids, you know, to go out and do the best that they can.
- 9:26And it really puts Saint Louis best foot forward.
- 9:28So I'm excited about the program.
- 9:31I'm excited about the Saint Louis community being behind the
- 9:34program. And I'm just hoping that we can
- 9:36hold on to Josh Shirts and we can get a solid program where we
- 9:40don't have to think about reinventing ourselves every
- 9:42year. So correct me if I'm wrong,
- 9:45going back to your career, you have a a great collegiate career
- 9:49at the Billikens fifth round pick of the Celtics, correct?
- 9:53And then you you have an eye injury.
- 9:55Tell tell folks about what happened post college.
- 9:58Well, it was. It was really an honor to be
- 10:00drafted by the Celtics in the fifth round.
- 10:03They didn't have a first round pick that year.
- 10:04They had a second and a fourth and a fifth pick.
- 10:07So I was that third pick. I joined another Saint Louis
- 10:11native, JoJo White, on the team. It was a great experience and
- 10:15unfortunately I did sustain an injury and it did cut my career
- 10:19short. And upon recovery, I did go on
- 10:22to play basketball in the Continental Basketball League.
- 10:25And then of course, I played three years over in France.
- 10:28So I had an opportunity to to to get the edge out of me in terms
- 10:33of my desire to want to play basketball, just not in the NBA.
- 10:37But nonetheless, it was extra college.
- 10:39So I really enjoyed that opportunity.
- 10:42So without the eye injury, you think about being drafted at
- 10:46that time by the Celtics and then the Celtics, you got Larry
- 10:50Bird, you got Robert Parish, you got Kevin McHale.
- 10:53They go on a run there. Do you think about that a lot
- 10:56about what? I mean, you're you've obviously
- 10:58had a great career. Do you think about a lot what
- 11:00what could have been? Well, absolutely you do.
- 11:03And again, I was right there on the cusp.
- 11:05I was playing well. The Celtics were really invested
- 11:08in me and and they saw me as the future.
- 11:10I had to the great honor of playing right behind John
- 11:13Havlicek. That was his last year on the
- 11:16team and I was really learning the Celtic way of playing
- 11:19basketball. I had conditioned myself very,
- 11:22very well and and things happened for a reason.
- 11:24So I guess it was meant for me to go into my role in terms of
- 11:28corporate America more so than into the NBA.
- 11:31And the NBA was a different animal.
- 11:33It was a year just after the ABA had folded, so there are a lot
- 11:36of surplus players that were available.
- 11:39So it was very competitive. As you know, it was extremely
- 11:42physical and it was, it was quite an honor.
- 11:45And I had a great time. And I'm and I and I hate that I
- 11:48missed that opportunity, but you know, it's fate with habit.
- 11:51That was not the bee for Lewis McKinney.
- 11:54Well, you perfectly segued into my next topic here.
- 11:57You're talking about post basketball, corporate world and
- 12:00now the nonprofit world as well. Tell people about your career
- 12:05post basketball. Well, I made a decision to to
- 12:10want to be a always a Saint Louis guy when I finished high
- 12:13school. I had well over 100 offers a
- 12:16full rides. I could have went anywhere.
- 12:18I actually considered going to other universities, that one in
- 12:22particular University of Kansas. But I chose to stay home and I,
- 12:26and I chose to stay home because I want to give back to this
- 12:29community that was providing me with so much support even at an
- 12:33early age. And, and I think it was the
- 12:35right decision for a number of reasons.
- 12:37A, my family got a chance to, to watch my career.
- 12:40My friends got a chance and I got a chance to build
- 12:43relationships, which has really sustained me in terms of moving
- 12:48forward in my life. After my brief professional
- 12:51career, Anheuser Busch embraced me.
- 12:53They gave me an opportunity and, and now Saint Louis is home
- 12:59after my career. And so when I look out into the
- 13:02community and see exactly what Saint Louis means to me, it's
- 13:05everything. It's a family type of community.
- 13:09The community does get behind its local guys.
- 13:13And that's why our sports teams now are so well embraced because
- 13:17Saint Louis, you know, we're, we're, we're the, we're the only
- 13:20community in, in the country that I know it's important to
- 13:23know which high school you went to 1st, right?
- 13:27And then you get the greatest support from that community.
- 13:29But nonetheless, we embrace our entire community.
- 13:33That is funny. I'm from Ohio, Toledo, OH, but
- 13:35I've lived here now what I guess 18 years.
- 13:40And that is funny that where's you go to high school thing if
- 13:43you're not from here, you don't realize and then you get it once
- 13:46you get here. So tell folks about your
- 13:48nonprofit work. When did that start?
- 13:50Did you start some of these programs while you were still
- 13:53working at AB And and what are you doing now with all your
- 13:57humanitarian work? Well, upon my completion, you
- 14:00know, I still had a lot of fuel energy left in the tank.
- 14:04And I looked around and I saw, you know, what's going on in
- 14:09Saint Louis community and where can I make the greatest impact.
- 14:12And at that same time as upon my retirement from corporate
- 14:15America, it coincided with the aging of my parents.
- 14:18And I saw my parents get into situations where a lot of their
- 14:22friends were being displaced from the North city, North
- 14:27County community. And I saw there was a gap.
- 14:30And that gap was the fact that, you know, those seniors, they
- 14:33needed someone to help them to navigate the gauntlet in terms
- 14:36of resources available to them so they could age with dignity.
- 14:40So I, I, I went on and I started this not-for-profit, it's called
- 14:43a caring plus Incorporated. We were previously a caring plus
- 14:47foundation, but we've now transitioned to a caring plus
- 14:50incorporated and we provide supportive services for the
- 14:54north city, north county community and, or the entire
- 14:57city of Saint Louis. And so we start helping people
- 15:00navigate what resources are available to them to help them
- 15:02to age with dignity. And we learned we can make a
- 15:05greater impact into helping them to age in their community.
- 15:09So we started helping them preserve their homes, help them
- 15:13to make them age-related dependent.
- 15:15And from there we've expanded. Now we're developing homes for
- 15:18seniors in the north city, north County area.
- 15:22It's been a great, great blessing for me.
- 15:25I thank God for the opportunity. I thank the community for
- 15:28embracing me the way we have thus far.
- 15:31We provided I think 174 units of senior housing, but in addition
- 15:37to that we've expanded to include first time home buyers
- 15:41experience as well and we've built about 60 individual
- 15:44related houses in the North city, North County area.
- 15:49That's amazing. So for folks who who want to
- 15:51help, who want to know more, tell people how they get a hold
- 15:54of you or the foundation if they want to help.
- 15:57Yeah. Well, we started in 2012 and I
- 16:00still consider us as an emerging organization.
- 16:02We're growing and we're looking to expand our work.
- 16:05And if people are interested in in helping us, we can be found
- 16:09at a caring plus.org Lewis McKinney and or our Executive
- 16:14Director is Alice Logan. And we will welcome anyone who's
- 16:18willing to want to work with us, volunteers, donations, etcetera.
- 16:22All right, well, we have something in common.
- 16:23It's not, it's not basketball talent.
- 16:25I never had a a 40 inch vertical.
- 16:26I did play a little bit in high school, but I wasn't, I wasn't
- 16:30that good whatsoever. But we're both clients members.
- 16:33You're on the board of of Triad Bank.
- 16:36I've been working with Triad Bank for the last 5-6 years.
- 16:40They've been a sponsor for the last 5-6 years.
- 16:42I have a rental property business and I always say this,
- 16:44it was the best thing I ever did was switching my loans from a
- 16:48big National Bank to to Triad Bank, a local bank with
- 16:51relationship based banking which you can really tell the
- 16:54difference in customer service. So tell folks, Lewis, how you
- 16:58got involved with Triad Bank. Well, Charlie, it, it, it all
- 17:02coincided about the time when I was at Anheuser Busch late in my
- 17:06career and I needed to make an investment and I found Triad
- 17:11Bank and Triad Bank being a, a local community bank, I met
- 17:15this, the, the leadership there and, and, and I really embraced
- 17:19them because they embraced me. I mean, they're adaptable.
- 17:22They, they come to each individual, they analyze your
- 17:25needs and they figure out how they help your business, not
- 17:28just at the present moment, but for the future.
- 17:31And so I really appreciated that a great deal about Triad Bank.
- 17:35And from there it has progress and that they invited me to take
- 17:39a look at their organization and see how I can help them to adapt
- 17:43and to continue to provide some greater support in the
- 17:46community. And it's one of the best
- 17:48decisions I ever made to work closely with Triad Bank and join
- 17:51the board. Triad Bank really cares about
- 17:54this community. And and I like that because you
- 17:57have people who live in Saint Louis, who work in Saint Louis
- 18:01and we're a local community bank.
- 18:03So you know, we're right here for you.
- 18:06When you pick up the phone and call, you're going to get a real
- 18:09person on the phone and they're going to work with you to make
- 18:12sure you get the best product we can available to help you with
- 18:15your banking needs. Yeah, whenever I talk.
- 18:17About Triad, I always talk about that relationship based banking.
- 18:20I I think we've done probably over the last 5-6 years 7 or 8
- 18:24different loans as we're buying and selling rental properties
- 18:27and we have, we have two now. We just, we, we bought one this
- 18:31past summer and I hadn't done my due diligence with the, the pre
- 18:35approval letter. We, we looked at a property
- 18:37actually on Memorial Day weekend and we wanted to make an offer.
- 18:41And I had to text my guy Matthew Tobin over a holiday weekend,
- 18:45which I, I hated doing, but he responded, he got it done for us
- 18:49there on the holiday weekend. And and you know, that's a true
- 18:52story that I think really reflects what we all talk about,
- 18:55which is that relationship based banking, you know the names of
- 18:59the people you're working with. When I worked with a big
- 19:01National Bank, I felt like just another client, another person.
- 19:04You're talking to somebody maybe locally, but also somebody
- 19:07nationally. They're maybe not on the same
- 19:09page. And you never get that with
- 19:11Triad Bank. You know exactly who you're
- 19:13talking to, and they know you. That's exactly.
- 19:16Right, Charlie, and, and like your experience, I've had a
- 19:18similar experience with Triad Bank, but all my friends in the
- 19:22community that need banking needs always the director of
- 19:24Triad Bank 'cause I feel confident they're going to get
- 19:27the personal attention they need and that the bank's going to do
- 19:30the best they can to customize a product for them so that they
- 19:35can be successful. So Triad Bank is truly a local
- 19:39focused bank that does local investing and I and I love that
- 19:43because the shareholders are mostly local as well as the
- 19:47services that we provide. So Triad Bank, they've been good
- 19:50for me. They've helped me with our
- 19:53not-for-profit. I know they help a number of
- 19:55other not for profits and we're just good community partners
- 19:58right before we wrap. Up here, anything else I didn't
- 20:01ask you about, whether it's about Triad Bank or a Caring
- 20:04Plus, anything that's coming up but Jolly I I I.
- 20:08Thank you for this opportunity. In closing, a Karen Plus
- 20:13Incorporated, we have one annual event every year that we use to
