- 0:00SPEAKER_00: All right, man.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: Hey, uh good morning.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Gosh, praise the Lord.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: The elections are over.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Can I get an amen?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Gee, what a um what a what a wild ride.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: You know, um Jimmy Kimmel said uh the other day, he said, God, we let's not do that again.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: You know, this this democracy thing, you know, I've heard it said that uh it's the worst form of government there is, except for all the rest.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So um, you know, it's like gee, why don't we why don't we just have a benevolent dictator who just kind of controls all the resources and takes care of everything?
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: And and uh Oh, yeah, I guess we do.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: I guess I I guess we do.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: We know we do.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Well, so anyway, so let's um um let's think about Philip here.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Uh we're gonna start uh start a new lesson, our new uh disciple here.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: So um he was uh Gene calls him a pragmatist.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Well, I actually had to kind of go look that word up.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I couldn't remember what it meant, but uh sensible, down-to-earth, you know, kind of level-headed.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So um uh he he was the one that uh he could acknowledge that, gee, this could very well be the Messiah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: But if you remember, what was their mindset?
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: They're looking for somebody to free them from Rome.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So we say, well, maybe maybe this guy could be um uh you know a a uh a a really tough uh you know general, you know, military leader, or maybe he's a a really savvy politician and he's gonna he's gonna free us from uh you know from the the Roman tyranny.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: You know, well, uh we're gonna find out uh really what kind of man uh uh Philip was as a as a disciple.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So with that, I'm gonna turn it over to uh uh to the guys here this morning.
- 1:39unknown: Good to see you, Paul.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Appreciate that, Paul.
- 1:41SPEAKER_03: We've got other stuff to do first.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: We got lots of news.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Do I have a mic too?
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Uh no.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you do.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: You just have to yell really loud.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: Hello, hello.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Um, so again, thanks for amazing food.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Uh we're doing the apostles.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Let me look at these Wednesdays.
- 1:59SPEAKER_03: And then, wow, to wake up this morning and see these headlines?
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: So, how many of you um how late did anybody stay up till the bitter end last night?
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Anybody did you really win a go, you guys?
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Oh my goodness.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Man, so you guys basically just went from watching TV to coming here?
- 2:18SPEAKER_02: Haven't slept yet.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: What do you like?
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: Okay, here admission time.
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: I'm a bad loser.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: Okay, I I am, unfortunately, a bad loser.
- 2:26SPEAKER_03: I have a friend uh Don Schwart uh who's super, you know, he's flying to Hawaii this year.
- 2:31SPEAKER_03: We see the Jayhawks, he travels all.
- 2:33SPEAKER_03: But if they lose, even like in the playoff, what he's over it in about 15 seconds.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: So I'm but I'm a bad loser.
- 2:41SPEAKER_03: So like if I know that my that a team I like like Washburn is gonna play KU and they're gonna get spanked, I'm not gonna watch that game.
- 2:48SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'll look at the very end to see what the score is.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: So I'm not watching the election at all because this is such a fate accompli.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: There's just no way.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: So it's about 11 o'clock last night.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: And I'm finishing uh, you know, this PowerPoint, and you know, um I just got back yesterday morning from Haiti, and she's leaving today to go out of the country, so this is our one night together.
- 3:10SPEAKER_03: At 11 o'clock, she uh she didn't want to watch it either, so she turns on the TV and she yells from the bedroom and she says, Trump's ahead.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: And I yell back, you're lying! I thought it meant Trump was getting spanked so bad that she was just teasing me.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: And so uh it's quite a shock.
- 3:31SPEAKER_03: So some some stuff I pulled off this morning.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: Trump wins presidency, defeats Clinton in historic.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: And I I like that word historic.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: Those of you who are as old as I am probably agree with me that this is probably the I don't know, it's the biggest surprise in I think in my lifetime in a presidential election.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Um, because uh one pollster, I stayed up till about midnight.
- 3:55SPEAKER_03: Uh one pollster got on, and he's bragging that he only had Hillary winning by three points, and all the others that he knew had her winning by like up to 10 points, percentage points.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, so this is shocking.
- 4:07SPEAKER_03: My favorite headline this morning is celebrities react with shock.
- 4:13SPEAKER_03: Donald Trump win.
- 4:15SPEAKER_03: And so I'm glancing down.
- 4:17SPEAKER_03: And you have all these all these Hollywood celebrities who are so sure that the candidate they've chosen will win because they're so popular.
- 4:25SPEAKER_03: You have people like Julia Roberts, who you there's not a Republican or an evangelical or or or or or conservative in the world that she doesn't despise.
- 4:34SPEAKER_03: And you know, and these people are absolutely horrified.
- 4:38SPEAKER_03: They're apologizing to the world, you know, for America.
- 4:42SPEAKER_03: And uh I love it when celebrities react with shock.
- 4:46SPEAKER_03: So, anyway, any any more thoughts about this?
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: This is I've just felt so free this morning that the Clintons are not in charge anymore.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: It'll just be it'll be interesting to see what happens.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 5:00SPEAKER_03: It's it's like, and it's kind of fun.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: It's like going to Vegas now.
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: You have no idea what's gonna happen for the next four years.
- 5:06SPEAKER_03: But we did know what was gonna happen with Hillary, so we'll know it will be interesting, probably.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: And I and I'm glad to have a guy in the Oval Office, at least at this point, is not is not going in thinking that Christians are her worst, are you know, are the worst enemy, you know, of the state.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, foreign policy, you know, stateside policy.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Hillary had made it really clear even this year in several statements that she considered people like me the real problem.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: I do think one good thing though, um I thought we said this was a good thing that we won.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: That's a good thing.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, a second good thing.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Pence, I think, will be be a good support person for him, and probably a sound, reasonable person to bounce ideas off of and talk through things and if if if if if poisonous if a poisonous thing hides in his fake hair and and burrows down and kills him and Pence is president.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: No, don't repeat me on that one.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: That's going online, you know that, right?
- 6:10SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 6:11SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: Forget it.
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: Lord, no.
- 6:14SPEAKER_03: But you're right, Pence is really great.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Okay, now for the important stuff.
- 6:19SPEAKER_03: Uh all of our teams lost last week, and apparently I was out of the country.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Uh didn't KU win though?
- 6:27unknown: You missed it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: Oh, you mean oh basketball against Washburn.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: Basketball.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: No, we're telling you football now.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: And uh and I decided the head, let's see, so K-State just barely lost, but uh they should still be bowl-qualified after they beat KU in two weeks.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Uh, because all you have to do is win six games.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Don't you love that?
- 6:46SPEAKER_03: KU, I decided to put down they lost.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Did you realize they just lost their 40th game in a row on the road in the Big 12?
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: That's that's pretty amazing.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: Poor guys.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, West Virginia.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Uh Chiefs won despite the fact that all their guys were either injured or kicked out of the game.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: They had they didn't have their top, they didn't have their top two running backs.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: Travis Kelsey, their tight end, got kicked out, didn't have their quarterback, and somehow they still won.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: He did get the opportunity to throw his flag, though.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: He really enjoyed that during the game.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: So when I leave uh last week, the Cubs are down three games to one, and I stand up in church.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Jason, remember this on Sunday morning, and talked about, you know, this is a good thing for Hank because he can keep his license plate.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: And I'm thinking, with the Cubs going back to Cleveland, down three to one, there's absolutely no chance.
- 7:38SPEAKER_03: So they go to Cleveland and they win, and then they win, and then they win, and they win the whole thing.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: Uh and and I'm reduced down in Haiti where we have really no reception, but we do, we're able to buy this, you know, some sort of a stick we put in there, and it sort of updates the data every minute.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: So sitting there in Haiti at midnight is the seventh game goes into extra innings.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: I'm there, and Patty Delaberto, who comes from you know, Chicago.
- 8:08SPEAKER_03: So we're following the game, and then they all go to bed, and that's when Ben Zobris, Christian, ex-royal, you know, hits the double that puts us ahead, and we win.
- 8:18SPEAKER_03: So anyway, uh, I thought this was a big win.
- 8:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was huge.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: I think one of the cool things, and you guys probably all know this too, but um, just how open Zobris is about his faith and sharing Christ and kind of the light that he tries to shine.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: And he has two World Series.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, isn't that so?
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, how many people can say that with two different teams?
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Key hit.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Crazy.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm loving it.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Uh let me mention about Haiti.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: A couple of you have asked if I'll say something.
- 8:49SPEAKER_03: Haiti's this really poor country, as you know, on this island down south of Florida.
- 8:55SPEAKER_03: And um, they had another hurricane here a few months ago.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: It mainly hit 100 miles south of where we were, which would have taken us an entire day to drive to.
- 9:04SPEAKER_03: So we didn't go down there, but we had uh uh my son and I, my son especially was in charge of a pastor's conference.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: And so we had there were about a hundred pastors from areas like that, rural areas that came in.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: And so all day, Tuesday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, we the two of us plus Corey, Clutter, and Kent Vincent, were in charge of a pastor's conference, and then their evening, those four evening sermons to the whole group and their wives.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: And so I did two of those.
- 9:35SPEAKER_03: Craig did the mornings all by himself anyway.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: And I did a walk through the Bible in the afternoon, and the pastors love that.
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: If you've ever never been to one of those, it's where you have about 60 motions, creation, fall, flood, nations, and and you and you teach them the Old Testament.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: And these pastors know less than you do.
- 9:52SPEAKER_03: I don't care who you are.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: They know less than there's only a couple pastors that would know as much as you do about the Old Testament or about the Bible.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: They just, you know, that's just the way it is.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: Which is why Corey Clutter and Kent Vincent go down there nervous, but they know ten times as much as any any of you could go down and do this pastor's conference, you'd be great.
- 10:12SPEAKER_03: You'd be terrific.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: Think about it.
- 10:14SPEAKER_03: Every year, pastors' conferences, first week of November.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: And I told Kent, goes, What do I talk about?
- 10:20SPEAKER_03: I said, You're a businessman.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: Talk about money in the Bible.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Look up a few verses.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: They absolutely loved it.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Whatever you're good at or you know, you could really help these pastors at.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: So consider it.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, I know you you may not consider yourself, you know, pastor, but they'll give you a good interpreter, and um it'd be fun.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: It'd be fun to have you, and it'd be really cool for you to do this.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: You could.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: So um at the same time, a clinic is going on where you know, back at the orphanage, there's a little clinic and there's hundreds of people coming through.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: And here's the here's one of the cool things is that a couple of years ago, uh the the president of of Saint Francis or something started coming to the church a little, and he came down and he loved this idea.
- 11:07SPEAKER_03: And so, because of him and then his connections at Washburn, all of a sudden, every single trip, we have a half a dozen nurses, especially from like Saints, some from Stormont, and some students who are nursing students from Washburn who go down, they get credit for helping at the clinic.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: And they're non-Christians.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and yet there they are at a Christian orphanage, and every night we're doing little devotions and we're singing, and and one last night, night before last, you know, one nurse practitioner is tearing up, and she's sitting, she says, I haven't been to church in years.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: She says, I grew up Catholic, drifted away from the faith and all that, but she says, listening to you guys sing, and it's kind of learning these songs, and there's just such reality here.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: She says, Um, she says, This has been life-changing, just sitting here in the evenings.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: And of course, Patty is sort of an evangelist, and Patty's getting her to come to TBC this Sunday and to LOL and or whatever the women's stuff is.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: And and um, so that's really a cool.
- 12:12SPEAKER_03: I I told Doug Will yesterday, there's a half a dozen people here that we don't touch.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: They m probably wouldn't come to the light show, they wouldn't come no matter what program we put on, but they really are they really are good women, sometimes guys who have a heart for the poor, and they go down there and then they get into the Christian thing, and we're talking the gospel, and and um it's an amazing, you know.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: You took you took a group of kids to New York City, and it's just I love that stuff.
- 12:40SPEAKER_03: So so um anyway, it was a really good week down there.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: It was a really good week.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if any of you guys are interested in going down to Haiti, there's trips through Lifeline, and they go, I don't know, six, seven times a year, something like that.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Um so pretty, pretty regularly.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: And you can go down on a medical trip, you can go down on a work trip, you know, you don't have to be like a nurse or a doctor or anything like that, but um, they're always looking for people to go down and and help out.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Um took a trip down there with the youth kids two summers ago, and it's it's amazing.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: It's amazing just to see see God work and to see joy in people when I mean they've got nothing compared to what we have materially, and just to just to be around that.
- 13:29SPEAKER_03: We always try to take at least you know, a couple of guys who you know can change hinges or light bulbs or fix little things or whatever.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: We had a guy down there, and um, because if you don't, you know, it's such a hassle.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: And we had a guy down there and he replaced all the hinges in the kitchen uh and the kitchen dr drawers which weren't opening or other stuff, and you know, and um so yeah, you're right, you're exactly right.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: If you'd like to teach or you like medical thing, I mean I don't know any I don't know anything about medicine, but I go in there and stand and I admit people and move them from room to room in the mornings and or if you're good with your hands, it's a great thing to do.
- 14:07SPEAKER_03: What do you think?
- 14:08SPEAKER_03: The apostles.
- 14:09SPEAKER_03: The apost oh let's talk about the apostles.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: Isn't that who we've been talking about the past few weeks?
- 14:14SPEAKER_03: Not me.
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: I was gone last week.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, except for you.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Did you talk about the last week?
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: We we've been talking about the apostles.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 14:19SPEAKER_03: And last week was Andrew the Connector.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: We finished that.
- 14:23SPEAKER_03: That was chapter four, I think.
- 14:25SPEAKER_03: So we've had Peter, who is the leader, James the warrior, John the lover, Andrew the Connector.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: Remember how he connects people with Jesus?
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: And Philip, we don't have a lot of information on him, but frankly, what we've got sort of leads us to think that um he's a realist.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: Or uh the title of your chapter is Philip the Pragmatist, which is the same thing.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Because this is a guy who, at the end of the first chapter of John, uh Derek's gonna talk about it.
- 14:53SPEAKER_03: I think the author, John, is trying to prove in his book that Jesus is more than just the son of Joseph.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: But he starts off the book by having a guy named Philip come in and identify him.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: Jesus, and he's the son of Joseph, because Philip's a pragmatist.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: He's not a quick believer.
- 15:09SPEAKER_03: He's one of these guys that you bring to church who says, you know, who has to come for a year or two before he trusts Christ.
- 15:16SPEAKER_03: And and uh by the end of the book, we know Jesus is far more than the son of Joseph, but we're gonna tell some stories.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: There's about three stories in here.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: I forget the page numbers that um that this uh that Philip's sort of a realist.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: So, Derek, why don't you jump us off?
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: Where are we in the book here?
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're uh starting on page, let's see, about 86.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: And uh this is chapter one of John, and it involves uh Phil.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: My I have a little brother named Phil.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: I think is it probably maybe the same person?
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, same person.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Same guy.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Same guy?
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: So it's really interesting because like Jim said, you know, we don't have a ton of scripture about Philip.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: We don't have a ton of information about Philip.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Um, but one of the things that that gets pointed out here is as we look at the end of John chapter 1, this is when Jesus begins to call disciples, begins to bring people to himself to start following.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: And I just want to read a couple of these verses.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: Um this is in John 1, starting in verse 43.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: This is the next day he decided to leave for Galilee, Jesus found Philip and told him, Follow me.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: Now Philip was from Beth Seda, the hometown of Andrew and Peter.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Philip found Nathaniel and told him, and this is one of the key points that we see, we have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and so did the prophets.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: And it's interesting that Philip kind of being portrayed as this pragmatist, kind of this realist person, says, Hey, here's the son of Joseph.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Here's this guy from Nazareth.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: And we take Philip's response and we compare it to Andrew's response, which is hey, here's the Messiah.
- 17:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: This is this is the son of God who we're going to follow.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And we see Philip, oh yeah, that's Joseph's son.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, that's that guy from Nazareth.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: That's a good thing.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Let's go see what he's about.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: And so from the beginning, we kind of see a a maybe a hesitancy or maybe some um just not understanding or or comprehending who Jesus is at the beginning, which leads us to believe that maybe he was a little bit more reserved in just completely accepting Jesus as God, accepting Jesus as the Messiah as the Savior.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: But he clearly recognized that he's a really important person that these guys should go follow.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: And it's it's interesting.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Um that I thought was interesting, and this is on page 88.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: This is on page 88, and the first question that's in italics, um, right under Time to Reflect, is how much time passed by in your own experience before you took Jesus' claims seriously?
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: How much time has passed by?
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: And um the sentence uh right underneath that, the second paragraph, it says, We're not told when Philip actually accepted Jesus' invitation to leave his profession and follow him.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Because Jesus said, Hey, follow me.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: And after that, you know, Philip says, Hey, here's the son of Joseph.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Let's let's follow this guy.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: But we're not clear exactly, you know, how much time had passed.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was a couple days, maybe it was a week, um, but we're not sure.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: But the the thing that kind of stuck out to me is in my life, you know, Christ always calls us to salvation in some some kind of way.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: And for me, I accepted Christ, I trusted in Christ when I was in second grade.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: So I was I was pretty young when I did that.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: But there was a vast amount of years from the time when I trusted in Christ to the time when I started following after Christ, if that makes sense.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: So I intellectually I believed and I I trusted in him when I was younger, but I didn't intentionally start walking after Christ, start trying to emulate my life after Christ until I was a freshman in college.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: And so there's there's a big difference there.
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: And it it doesn't mean that I wasn't a Christian that whole time, it just means that I wasn't intentionally following after the Lord, which is where we're all at at some at some level, even sometimes day to day.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: Umetz points out on page 89, the first full paragraph, you know, they weren't spiritually ready to understand Jesus' real purpose in coming into the world.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: It would be at least another three years before they would clearly comprehend the reason for the death and resurrection of the Messiah.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: I think one thing that I that we see in Philip, one thing that we see in ourselves, is that there's never a point where we've just arrived at this godly knowledge or like this level of following Christ where you can't do it anymore.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: You can't follow Christ more than you already are.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: And it it kind of hints at this idea of it's a continual process following Christ.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: It's a it's a day-by-day relying on him, a day by day learning more and more and more.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: Because we'll never know all the answers of the Bible, we'll never know everything there is to know about God.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: But we can continually seek him and continually continue down that path of getting to know him more and more.
- 21:28SPEAKER_03: I think that um I I bet everybody's a little bit like me in this, that if you talk to someone about Jesus, you actually kind of like it better if they don't go, yes, I believe, you know, immediately.
- 21:42SPEAKER_03: But if they go, tell me more or let me think about it, and then they come back the next week and it and because you feel like they they're they're not just gullible, you know.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: And Philip is that kind of a person who considers it And as you know um so I I kinda like I kinda like that person that kind of a person.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: And it's it's interesting.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: My wife has been going to some physical therapy and she's started a conversation, g really getting to know one of the ladies who works on her neck and and her back while she's there, and she's gotten the opportunity to to talk with her and um share Christ with her.
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: And she was going to go back um this week, and she's like Gabby was like, Man, I'm excited.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna have this like really deep God conversation.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: Um, because the week before they had been having a conversation about God and really got the lady's wheels turning, like really got her thinking about her faith.
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: Because she um kind of a messy background, um not involved in church, but believes that God exists, but from what Gabby can tell, maybe not necessarily that she believes that Christ is God or that she has salvation.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: Um and it's kind of that same situation where you know, week week one going in, having this good conversation about God, not oh, I believe in Christ.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: That that wasn't her response, um, but thinking about it.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: And for Gabby to be able to go back this week and not have you know this super deep conversation about Christ, but just to listen to the things that she's saying um and know that she's having an impact on this lady somehow for the Lord.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: There were two uh girls, girls, grown-up girls, uh one college student and one probably late 30s on this trip that I'd talk to, and they who are like this.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: One uh girl, attractive girl on the soccer team at Washburn.
- 23:46SPEAKER_03: She brought a soccer ball signed by all of the team for the kids down there.
- 23:50SPEAKER_03: And um she's a nursing student and cool girl, and and so she and I would chat, but it's clear that she it's been a while since she's been religious, you know.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: And um I'm and so we have devotions each night, and one of us kind of gave a little devotional, and then we'd sing worship songs, and it was really moving, it was really cool.
- 24:13SPEAKER_03: But so her chair was back a little bit from the table as versus anyone else, and she just kind of looked around and she wouldn't try or whatever.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: So that's the first night, and then there's a second night, and the third night, and by the fourth night, she's you know, nodding and involved, and and uh the fifth night, and and by la not night before last, she's singing along or trying to.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: She came up on stage with us on Sunday morning because they asked us to come up and sing a Christian song, and she came up and she was doing a good job, and she teared up at one point, and I'm thinking, you know, she's moving that direction.
- 24:49SPEAKER_03: And uh the other lady that um I had several hours to talk to her in the airport in Haiti yesterday, and um, last Sunday, Barb Habricorn, who's a nurse in our church, came up, she said, there's this girl I worked with, a nurse.
- 25:01SPEAKER_03: She's in her 30s, she's really scared.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: She's going to Haiti.
- 25:04SPEAKER_03: She heard about this trip.
- 25:06SPEAKER_03: She's always wanted to help out poor children or something, but she knows nobody else on the trip.
- 25:10SPEAKER_03: She's scared, she's shy, and so forth.
- 25:12SPEAKER_03: Would you would you spend some time with her, get to know her?
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: I said, sure.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: And then God put us together on the plane, three out of the four flights we had.
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: So it worked out really well.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: And yesterday, she's sitting apart from everybody as usual.
- 25:25SPEAKER_03: And I'd been watching Brenda, that's Brenda's her name.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, it turns out she's been through stuff.
- 25:32SPEAKER_03: She grew up Catholic, uh, you know, her kids, she sent her kids to Hayden, and then her husband divorced her three years ago, and her life's been hard, and she's just completely drifted away from anything.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: And she's just never experienced, she said, Christianity of the style that ours was, which is vibrant, evangelical, talking about the gospel, you know, and um and and it's just and one of her last words to me is, you know, I I know I need to come to church.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: And I yeah, I kind of I like that sort of uh pragmatist, you know what?
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Maybe this is for me.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: So anyway, more examples.
- 26:11SPEAKER_03: Let me let me take the other uh, we're just gonna stop after this story here on page uh 89.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: This is called a test of Philip's faith in by Getz.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: And it's it's it's when Jesus goes to the area of Bethsaida.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: This is the place where I've been to dig a number of times, archaeological dig, and this is where the 5,000 were fed.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: And so it's natural since Philip came from Bethsida, along with several other disciples, that Jesus turns to him and says, Hey, Philip, where should we go to buy bread for these people?
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: 5,000 men, so you're talking maybe 15,000 people or something.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: And he said this testing Philip.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: And of course, you ask that question of a realist or a pragmatist, what's he gonna say?
- 26:58SPEAKER_03: He's going to almost sarcastically say what Philip said, this is in the middle of page 90.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: He goes, Are you kidding me?
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: You know, we eight months' wages wouldn't buy enough bread for each one of these people to have just a bite.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: And um, so this is uh sort of an illustration, I think Gene Getz is right, that Philip, Philip is, you know, Jesus is drawing out his true personality, which is, oh come on, you know, uh I'm uh you know, let's not pretend that we can somehow pull this off.
- 27:33SPEAKER_03: And then a miracle happens right in front of Philip.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: And so this pragmatist, this realist gets stretched, is the is is the question then on page um, or is it in 89.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: When was the last time Jesus stretched you, gave you a unique opportunity to grow in your faith?
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: So um I think it's a good question.
- 27:56SPEAKER_03: So uh let's read the, let's uh um you ready for the memory verse?
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Let's do the memory verse.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, we've got a memory verse at the end that we're gonna do this week and next week.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: Next week is Philip.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Again.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: Let's say this together.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: So I say to you, ask and it will be given to you.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: Seek and you will find.
- 28:16SPEAKER_03: Knock, and the door will be open to you.
- 28:19SPEAKER_03: For everyone who asks receives.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: The one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be open.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: This is um famous versions in Matthew 7, but this is Luke 11.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: So in your small group discussion time, I've listed here the three questions in that part of the chapter that on pages, I think it's uh 56, 58, and 60 or something like that.
- 28:47SPEAKER_03: Uh and these are the questions in that discussion.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: I've just pulled them out here so you can see them and walk through them.
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: They go first, when you first heard about Jesus, thinking about Philip here for a minute when he first heard about Jesus, how did you respond in the three main ways?
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: Intellectually, thinking, emotionally, and volitionally?
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: So how did you first think about him?
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: Second, how much time, this is the question you you hit on, Derek, how much time passed by in your own experience before you take his claim seriously?
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Anybody here trust Christ after they were 20 years old?
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Great.
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Okay, make sure if you saw those hands raised at your table, you ask them their story because here we probably have four or five Phillips, you know, people who had heard the gospel but were didn't trust it right away.
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: Okay?
- 29:34SPEAKER_03: And third, when was the last time Jesus stretched you and gave you a unique opportunity to grow in your faith?
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: Okay?
- 29:40SPEAKER_03: So let's um let's pray.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: Oh thanks, Tom, for that amazing and and guys?
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Ed, yeah, thanks.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Thanks, guys.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: What's that?
- 29:54SPEAKER_03: What do you mean last time till next year?
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: What?
- 30:00SPEAKER_03: He's going on vacation.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: He's going to Hawaii.
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: How can we even have a meeting without this?
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Okay, we'll be talking, yeah.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: We'll be talking to Ed, we'll be talking to you guys about helping out.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: Lead us in prayer.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: We need to pray about that.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: There will be food next week, even if even if it's even if it's pop charts, yeah.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Heavenly Father, thanks for this time that we get to come together.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Thank you for being the God who's in control of everything.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Um we know that you're in control of our election, and you it's it's not a surprise to you, and somehow it's gonna work out in the plan that you want it to work out.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: And Lord, thank you for Tom and the group that comes and makes breakfast for us in the morning.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: Thank you that we get to have these discussions.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Help us to grow closer to you today.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: In Jesus' name.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Amen.
