- 0:00Speaker 1: At turn-of-the-century Coney Island, a determined showman clashes with a
- 0:04Speaker 1: local operator while ambition and romance play out along the boardwalk.
- 0:09Speaker 1: On September 30, 1946, CBS and Lux Radio Theater presented
- 0:15Speaker 1: Coney Island, Episode 539, adapted from the 1943 20th Century
- 0:17Speaker 1: Fox musical. Betty Grable reprises her screen role, joined by
- 0:27Speaker 1: Victor Mature and Barry Sullivan, in a story set among
- 0:30Speaker 1: the cafes, carnival attractions, and nightclub entertainment of early 1900s
- 0:36Speaker 1: New York. It was Lux Radio Theater's second adaptation of
- 0:41Speaker 1: the film, following a 1944 version with Dorothy L'Amour and
- 0:46Speaker 1: Alan Ladd. Ladies and gentlemen, the curtain rises. Now, back
- 0:51Speaker 1: to the golden age of radio.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Lux presents Hollywood. The Lux Radio Theater brings you Betty Grable,
- 1:15Speaker 2: Victor Mature, and Barry Sullivan in Coney Island. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 1:22Speaker 2: your producer, Mr. William Keeley.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. If I were asked
- 1:37Speaker 3: to name the entertainment center of the world, I'd probably
- 1:40Speaker 3: say Hollywood. But if you put that question to any
- 1:44Speaker 3: one of seven million people in New York, he'd probably
- 1:47Speaker 3: answer with some vigor.
- 1:48Speaker 4: The entertainment center of the world, that's Coney Island.
- 1:52Speaker 3: And for tonight at least, we'll agree with him. As
- 1:56Speaker 3: we bring you 20th Century Fox's musical success, Coney Island.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Starring lovely Betty Grable in the role she created on
- 2:04Speaker 3: the screen. Co-starred with Betty, we have Victor Mature, resuming
- 2:09Speaker 3: a brilliant screen career after four years in the service,
- 2:12Speaker 3: and that talented young actor, Barry Sullivan. Both rival suitors
- 2:17Speaker 3: in this rollicking story of love, laughter, and excitement at
- 2:21Speaker 3: America's most famous playground. Our story takes us back to
- 2:25Speaker 3: the period popularly known as BLF. You know, of course,
- 2:30Speaker 3: what BLF stands for. Before Lux Flake. and before many
- 2:35Speaker 3: other conveniences, too, such as the subways that whisked Manhattan's
- 2:39Speaker 3: millions to Coney Island in a fraction of the time
- 2:43Speaker 3: it took the horse-drawn carriages. Of course, Lux Flakes are
- 2:46Speaker 3: great time-savers, too, not only for New Yorkers, but for
- 2:50Speaker 3: busy women everywhere, women who appreciate this modern, quicker way
- 2:55Speaker 3: of keeping nice things lovely longer. And you'll agree that
- 3:00Speaker 3: that's an important service, nowadays especially, when nice fabrics are scarce.
- 3:05Speaker 2: We're off to.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Coney Island and the first act of tonight's play. Starring
- 3:10Speaker 3: Betty Grable as Kate Farley, Victor Mature as Eddie Johnson,
- 3:14Speaker 3: and Barry Sullivan as Joe Rocco.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Today in New York.
- 3:32Speaker 3: The closest spot to heaven is probably the top of
- 3:35Speaker 3: the Empire State Building. But 40 years ago, New Yorkers
- 3:39Speaker 3: came closest to paradise at a breeze swept beach on
- 3:43Speaker 3: the Atlantic Ocean. Only a short distance from the hot
- 3:47Speaker 3: and throbbing city... They found a land whose milk and
- 3:50Speaker 3: honey was clam chowder and foaming beer. A place of
- 3:55Speaker 3: perpetual carnival of singing waiters and persuasive barkers. A little raucous,
- 4:00Speaker 3: a little rowdy, but nevertheless, beautiful Coney Island. One spring afternoon,
- 4:12Speaker 3: a young man named Eddie Johnson makes his first visit
- 4:16Speaker 3: to Coney Island. Eddie has plans for a big business
- 4:19Speaker 3: deal involving an old acquaintance, Joe Rocco, owner of the
- 4:23Speaker 3: Scenic Gardens Cafe.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Well, mister, what'll it be?
- 4:28Speaker 5: So, this is Joe Rocco's place, huh?
- 4:31Speaker 2: That's right.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Nice big place, lots of business. Who does okay? That's
- 4:36Speaker 5: what I like to see. I like to see Joe
- 4:38Speaker 5: Rocco doing okay.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Give me a beer. Yes, sir.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Eddie!
- 4:43Speaker 2: Why, hello, Joe. Well, this is quite a surprise, Eddie.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Come on over here and sit down.
- 4:48Speaker 5: Thanks. Say, nice place you got here, Joe.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little different from those pit shows and
- 4:53Speaker 2: shooting galleries we used to have, Heidi. Once we had
- 4:55Speaker 2: a whole carnival, remember? Yeah, yeah, that's right. Then two
- 4:59Speaker 2: years ago in St. Louis, we had an argument about
- 5:01Speaker 2: how the carnival.
- 5:02Speaker 5: Should be run. We decided to play a hand of
- 5:05Speaker 5: poker for the whole works.
- 5:06Speaker 2: And I won it with three of the prettiest aces
- 5:08Speaker 2: you ever saw.
- 5:09Speaker 5: I've been trying to find you ever since, Joe. I
- 5:12Speaker 5: want to give you these. I found them the next
- 5:15Speaker 5: morning under the cushion of your chair. Four of the
- 5:18Speaker 5: prettiest aces you ever saw.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Well, Eddie, I guess this makes up for all those
- 5:22Speaker 2: times I went to the cash drawer and found your
- 5:24Speaker 2: hand in it. Now, why don't we just forget the
- 5:27Speaker 2: whole business, huh?
- 5:28Speaker 5: I've tried to forget it, Joe. I've tried and tried.
- 5:31Speaker 5: but it's just no use.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You gonna sue me?
- 5:33Speaker 5: No, but I figure that since you cheated me out
- 5:36Speaker 5: of our carnival, we're really still partners, and that means
- 5:39Speaker 5: I own one half of this joint.
- 5:41Speaker 2: There's just one hitch, Eddie. I don't figure the same way.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Well, in that case, I'll just have to worm myself in, Joe,
- 5:47Speaker 5: one way or another.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.
- 5:50Speaker 5: But I just gotta pay you back, Joe. If I didn't,
- 5:53Speaker 5: I'd lose all my self-respect.
- 5:55Speaker 6: I just wanted to show you my new dress, Joe.
- 5:56Speaker 6: How do you... Oh, I didn't know you were busy.
- 5:59Speaker 2: No, it's all right, honey. The man's just leaving. This
- 6:01Speaker 2: is Eddie Johnson, Kate Farley. She's my singer here.
- 6:04Speaker 5: Hello, Miss Farley.
- 6:05Speaker 6: How do you do?
- 6:06Speaker 2: The dress looks wonderful, Kate. How do you do?
- 6:09Speaker 5: Would you look at the feathers? You know, it'll be
- 6:11Speaker 5: a nice dress when it gets through molting.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Oh, and since when are you an authority?
- 6:15Speaker 2: Go on, Eddie. Push off.
- 6:17Speaker 5: You won't change your mind about my proposition?
- 6:18Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Suit yourself, Joe. Oh, Miss Farley.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah.
- 6:23Speaker 5: When you take that dress off, you'd better hang it
- 6:25Speaker 5: up in a birdcage.
- 6:26Speaker 6: Now listen, you smart aleck. I've had just about enough
- 6:28Speaker 6: of your.
- 6:29Speaker 5: With all those feathers, it's liable to fly away. Goodbye,
- 6:31Speaker 5: Miss Farley.
- 6:35Speaker 7: Hurry, hurry, hurry.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Come in and see her.
- 6:42Speaker 4: She's Josephine, the tattooed lady. She's covered with artistic masterpieces.
- 6:47Speaker 8: You'll see Gainsborough's blue boy talking things over.
- 6:50Speaker 4: With Whistler's mother.
- 6:51Speaker 2: You'll see the leading power of pizza.
- 6:53Speaker 9: Come in and.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Marvel at these quickly wonderful... Frankie, look.
- 6:56Speaker 10: It's Eddie.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Eddie Johnson. Eddie, you old son of a gun. Frankie
- 6:59Speaker 2: and Finnegan say you're looking great.
- 7:00Speaker 6: Why not?
- 7:01Speaker 2: He's preserved an alcohol.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Ah, not since the Chicago Fair have I looked upon you, Eddie.
- 7:05Speaker 8: Say, this calls for a celebration. Yeah, but tell me,
- 7:08Speaker 8: is this your pitch? Yeah, I'm sorry to say it's mine.
- 7:11Speaker 5: All mine.
- 7:11Speaker 8: What in the world are you doing at Corny Island?
- 7:13Speaker 8: From the looks of business, nothing. Eddie, have you seen
- 7:16Speaker 8: Joe yet?
- 7:16Speaker 2: Joe Rocco?
- 7:17Speaker 5: Yeah, just come from there.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Teaming up with Joe again, are you? Not just yet, Finnegan.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I'm looking for a new partner, Frankie. Interested? Oh, Eddie,
- 7:24Speaker 2: I ain't got but only nine bucks to my name.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Listen to me and you'll be rolling in dough.
- 7:28Speaker 9: Huh?
- 7:29Speaker 2: I got an idea for a pitch that's worth a fortune. Well,
- 7:31Speaker 2: that's great. Go and open it up and let me along. Look,
- 7:33Speaker 2: every location has taken. This would be just the spot
- 7:36Speaker 2: for it, Frankie. Oh, hurry, hurry, hurry. The only tattooed
- 7:39Speaker 2: woman on Coney Island.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Every time she shakes, moving pictures.
- 7:44Speaker 8: Look, will you listen to me? We can have it
- 7:46Speaker 8: ready in two days' time and for less than $ 300. But, Eddie,
- 7:49Speaker 8: I just told you, I got $ 90. I've got the money.
- 7:51Speaker 8: All I want from you is this location and your time.
- 7:54Speaker 2: You mean that? Certainly. Eddie, you just made yourself a deal.
- 7:57Speaker 5: Good.
- 7:57Speaker 8: After six months with Josephine, even suicide would look good
- 8:00Speaker 8: to me.
- 8:01Speaker 4: Come on, lads, let's have a beer and talk it over.
- 8:17Speaker 6: Dolly, will you look at that?
- 8:18Speaker 2: What?
- 8:19Speaker 6: Well, that mob over there in front of Frankie's place.
- 8:22Speaker 11: He never did that much business in a month.
- 8:24Speaker 6: Oh, didn't you know?
- 8:25Speaker 12: Frankie's got himself a new show and a new partner.
- 8:28Speaker 6: That fella doing the barking.
- 8:29Speaker 11: Huh?
- 8:31Speaker 6: Oh, you bet I see him. So that's Frankie's new partner,
- 8:35Speaker 6: is it?
- 8:35Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 6: Come on, Dolly. We're going over there.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Huh?
- 8:38Speaker 6: At a show like this? You heard me. Here's my
- 8:40Speaker 6: chance to get even. Katie, you just don't make sense.
- 8:43Speaker 6: I'll explain later. Come on.
- 8:46Speaker 10: And it's only ten cents, ten cents, to see the
- 8:53Speaker 10: starring exhibition of genuine Turkish harem girls.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Hurry, hurry, hurry.
- 8:58Speaker 8: See the young Turkish maidens sold to the Sultan for
- 9:00Speaker 8: 20 pieces of silver. An authentic and educational exhibition with
- 9:04Speaker 8: genuine oriental.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Music as played by Abu Mandir.
- 9:09Speaker 8: The turkeys, gentlemen, seated there before you on the Persian carpet.
- 9:13Speaker 8: Abu is a genuine native of mysterious Constantinople.
- 9:17Speaker 4: He neither speaks nor understands English.
- 9:19Speaker 8: Friends, but how he can play that world-famous native music.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Listen, friends, listen to me.
- 9:25Speaker 6: Hey, hey, that's Frankie, ain't it?
- 9:27Speaker 12: Playing just like a snake charmer?
- 9:28Speaker 6: Of course it is. Why, he looks about as much
- 9:30Speaker 6: like a Turk as you do.
- 9:31Speaker 13: Ha, ha.
- 9:32Speaker 6: Will you look at him buy those tickets? Gee, those
- 9:35Speaker 6: guys are making a fortune. Stand back, Dolly. I'm going
- 9:38Speaker 6: to go to work.
- 9:39Speaker 5: Only eight seats left.
- 9:40Speaker 10: Hurry, hurry, hurry.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Oh, Frankie.
- 9:43Speaker 10: Hello, Frankie.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Huh?
- 9:44Speaker 4: Oh, hello, honey.
- 9:45Speaker 6: Glad to see you.
- 9:47Speaker 2: I'm amazed, gents, amazed.
- 9:49Speaker 8: Abu arrived in this country only two days ago, and
- 9:52Speaker 8: already he speaks a few words of English.
- 9:53Speaker 11: He's about as Turkish as that Indian blanket he's sitting on.
- 9:57Speaker 2: All right, all right, little lady.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Kindly move along.
- 9:59Speaker 2: You see, gents, Abu... comes from a very fine family.
- 10:02Speaker 8: According to the Turkish traditions, he shouldn't speak with anyone
- 10:05Speaker 8: so obviously beneath him.
- 10:07Speaker 2: As the little lady here, he used.
- 10:09Speaker 6: He used to talk to me plenty when we were
- 10:10Speaker 6: working together.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Yes, Abu?
- 10:11Speaker 11: You do?
- 10:20Speaker 2: All right, Abu, I'll ask her.
- 10:21Speaker 5: Young lady Abu here can't figure out why you're wearing
- 10:24Speaker 5: that atrocity on your head. He says it can't be
- 10:26Speaker 5: a hat, or can it?
- 10:27Speaker 8: Abu says, did lady lose election bet or did lady
- 10:31Speaker 8: fall into fruit salad?
- 10:32Speaker 5: No!
- 10:33Speaker 2: Hey, Kate.
- 10:34Speaker 6: Kate, we'd better get out of here. The nerve. The
- 10:36Speaker 6: nerve of that bum. Wait till I tell Joe.
- 10:38Speaker 9: Just wait.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Why, the young lady is going away. Don't rush off, sweetheart.
- 10:42Speaker 2: All right, boys.
- 10:43Speaker 10: Hurry, hurry, hurry. The show starts in exactly three minutes.
- 10:47Speaker 2: It's the most sensational. The most daring.
- 10:55Speaker 6: And this time it was my hat he didn't like.
- 10:57Speaker 6: He insults me, Joe, in front of everybody. He insults me.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Oh, but now, honey.
- 11:00Speaker 6: And if you.
- 11:00Speaker 11: Don't tell him to stop bragging me, I'll bust a
- 11:02Speaker 11: bottle over his head.
- 11:04Speaker 6: I'll... Hey, where are all the customers?
- 11:07Speaker 2: That's what I've been trying to find out. Something funny
- 11:10Speaker 2: going on, Katie. I think I'll just take a look around... Billy,
- 11:20Speaker 2: me boy. Finnegan, come on in, have a drink.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Oh, no, no, I don't dare. Not here in Rocko's place.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Finnegan, you're sick.
- 11:26Speaker 5: Me?
- 11:27Speaker 4: No, but Steve is Rocko's bartender. The doctor discovered the
- 11:31Speaker 4: dear lad had chronic prognosis.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Oh?
- 11:34Speaker 4: And him handling all the glasses that people.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Drink out of. And I was just going in there.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I've been standing here warning all me friends to keep away.
- 11:40Speaker 4: It's just terrible.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Well, thanks, Finnegan.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Now, if you're looking for something intoxicating, there's Eddie Johnson's
- 11:45Speaker 4: new show just up the street. Ah, those Turkish car leads.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Oh, that's from me, Finnegan. I'll see you later.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Oh, my, my.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Well, you're the one who's steering my trade away. I'd
- 11:55Speaker 2: like to murder you, Finnegan.
- 11:56Speaker 6: Now, wait a minute, Joe. It's not his fault. You
- 11:59Speaker 6: know who put him up to this, don't you?
- 12:00Speaker 2: I got a pretty good idea. Go on, Finnegan, beat it.
- 12:02Speaker 6: Joe, you're not going to let him get away with this,
- 12:04Speaker 6: are you?
- 12:04Speaker 2: You bet your sweet life I'm not.
- 12:06Speaker 6: You've got to show that poor flusher where he gets off.
- 12:08Speaker 9: Louie.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Joe. Louie, that old friend of mine, Eddie Johnson.
- 12:13Speaker 2: He needs a lesson. I got some friends in Brooklyn, Joe.
- 12:16Speaker 2: They're swell teachers. I want that cooch joint of his
- 12:19Speaker 2: to look like an earthquake hit it, understand?
- 12:21Speaker 5: Relax, boss.
- 12:22Speaker 2: It's as good as done.
- 12:23Speaker 7: Oh.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Oh.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Frankie.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Oh.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Frankie. Can you move?
- 12:36Speaker 2: Oh, I'm fine. Just resting. Oh, what hit me?
- 12:41Speaker 5: Seems like Joe wants to play a little rough. Take
- 12:43Speaker 5: a look around.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Oh, what a wreck.
- 12:47Speaker 5: Yeah, it was a nice place while it lasted, Frankie.
- 12:49Speaker 13: Well, let's start looking for a carpenter in those Turkish dames.
- 12:53Speaker 2: We can be back in business in three or four days, maybe.
- 12:56Speaker 5: Uh-uh.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Why not?
- 12:58Speaker 5: Next time, Joe may use dynamite.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Oh.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Frankie, I got an idea. Let's wreck Joe's joint.
- 13:05Speaker 6: Dynamite?
- 13:06Speaker 5: Oh, swell. No, no. Nice and legal. See that sign
- 13:11Speaker 5: across the street?
- 13:12Speaker 2: Read it.
- 13:13Speaker 13: Welcome to Coney Island, United Brotherhood of Irish Bricklayers, Local 742.
- 13:21Speaker 5: They'll be here tomorrow, Frankie, the United Brotherhood.
- 13:24Speaker 2: So they'll be here.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Well, don't you see? Rocco's place will be filled with Irishmen.
- 13:29Speaker 5: After they've had a few beers, you and I will
- 13:32Speaker 5: go in and start making some nasty remarks. Pretty soon
- 13:35Speaker 5: there will be.
- 13:36Speaker 2: The wildest knockdown, free for all....
- 13:45Speaker 14: Angels sing, angels sing. When Irish eyes are smiling.
- 13:55Speaker 7: Hearts are gay.
- 13:57Speaker 6: All the world seems bright and gay.
- 14:02Speaker 15: Bright and gay.
- 14:05Speaker 6: And when Irish eyes are smiling.
- 14:16Speaker 7: For they steal your heart.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Thank you, boys. Thank you. We'll be back with more
- 14:38Speaker 2: entertainment later. Now, all you fine Irish bricklayers, just step
- 14:42Speaker 2: up to the bar and get a drink on the house.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It's free, boys. Free beer, free lunch.
- 14:46Speaker 10: Louie?
- 14:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Joe? I'll be up in the office. See if
- 14:49Speaker 2: these boys get free to drive. Okay, Joe.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Say, Louie, come here a minute.
- 14:58Speaker 8: Hey, you guys, don't you know when it's time to
- 15:00Speaker 8: leave town? Now, don't try to deny it, Louie. That
- 15:03Speaker 8: dirty crack you just made.
- 15:04Speaker 2: About these bricklayers.
- 15:05Speaker 10: So they're.
- 15:05Speaker 2: A bunch of lilies, are they? Hey, wait a minute.
- 15:08Speaker 2: What are you guys trying to pull? Sure, you better
- 15:10Speaker 2: take back what you said about the Irish, too. I
- 15:12Speaker 2: ain't said nothing about nobody.
- 15:14Speaker 4: And who said what about the Irish, lad?
- 15:16Speaker 8: This guy here making cracks about us Irish bricklayers. Telling
- 15:19Speaker 8: me that one Orangeman can lick ten Irishmen wide.
- 15:21Speaker 14: Oh, he did, didn't he?
- 15:22Speaker 6: He did indeed.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Oh, dear, oh, dear, oh, dear. Now, get away from me, you.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Oh, tough on you, laddie. I'll give you three seconds
- 15:27Speaker 4: to take it out back.
- 15:28Speaker 2: But I didn't say nothing.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Honest, I didn't. And a liar he is, too.
- 15:32Speaker 2: Go to sleep, laddie.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Sleep well.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Bye.
- 15:34Speaker 15: Bye, big boy.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Let's get down, Frankie.
- 15:44Speaker 10: Here in the corner.
- 15:45Speaker 2: I want to enjoy this. Oh, look at the way
- 15:49Speaker 2: that Brooklayer threw that chair. Wasn't that beautiful, Eddie?
- 15:52Speaker 8: Right through Joe's best mirror.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Very artistic.
- 15:55Speaker 4: Oh, I'm sorry Joe has to miss all this.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Where is he? Upstairs.
- 15:59Speaker 5: Wait a minute. He's coming down now. Oh, they're sure
- 16:02Speaker 5: making his scenic gardens awful scenic.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Get out of my way, Finnegan.
- 16:10Speaker 4: No, Joe, I'd like to let you pass, but I can't.
- 16:12Speaker 4: You might try to stop the foot.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Oh, they're wrecking the place. Get out of the way.
- 16:15Speaker 2: So you want to fight the Irish, huh?
- 16:17Speaker 4: Well, well, Bucky, you'll have to start with me.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Up with your hands.
- 16:20Speaker 11: Go on, you old sow's git.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Boys, you got to stop this.
- 16:24Speaker 3: Stop it.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Police.
- 16:25Speaker 16: Help.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Police.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Poor old Finnegan.
- 16:37Speaker 5: Come on, Frankie. Set him down on my bed.
- 16:39Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Ah, there.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Cold as a cucumber.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Oh, he'll be all right.
- 16:43Speaker 4: When Joe pushed him, he hit his head on the
- 16:45Speaker 4: bar rail.
- 16:46Speaker 2: He'll come around in a minute or two.
- 16:47Speaker 5: Lucky I live so close, I'm sure nobody saw us.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Saw us what?
- 16:50Speaker 5: Carrying Finnegan out.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Well, what if they did?
- 16:53Speaker 5: We couldn't leave him on the floor with the riot
- 16:54Speaker 5: going on. But I got an idea, Frankie. A great idea.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Another one. You've done all right for one day. Hey, hey,
- 17:01Speaker 2: he's coming around. Finnegan, Finnegan, wake up, Finnegan. Be quiet,
- 17:06Speaker 2: I'll do the talking.
- 17:08Speaker 14: Oh, no, boys.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Hello, Finnegan. Where am I?
- 17:13Speaker 5: In my bed, Finnegan. You've been here for hours and hours.
- 17:16Speaker 16: What's that?
- 17:17Speaker 4: What happened?
- 17:18Speaker 5: Oh, it's terrible, Finnegan. The doctor's just left. Doctors?
- 17:22Speaker 2: Is someone sick?
- 17:23Speaker 5: You are, poor fellow. Cranian contusions.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Finnegan, all over your body. Oh, dear, oh, dear,
- 17:33Speaker 2: me poor head hurts, too.
- 17:34Speaker 5: The doctors say you have a chance, Finnegan, if you
- 17:37Speaker 5: get out of town.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Out of town?
- 17:39Speaker 5: Immediately.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Ah, but I feel better already. Otherwise, they'll have to
- 17:42Speaker 2: take you to the city hospital. Oh, I took a
- 17:43Speaker 2: drink of water yesterday. I've been piling. And don't worry
- 17:46Speaker 2: about money.
- 17:46Speaker 5: A few weeks in, say, Atlantic City, and you'll be
- 17:49Speaker 5: a new man. Frankie and I will take you to
- 17:52Speaker 5: the train. Get a carriage, Frankie.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Oh, thank you, lads.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Thank you, Atlantic City. Oh, it'll do me a world
- 17:57Speaker 2: of good, boys.
- 17:58Speaker 4: A change of saloons is just what I need.
- 18:11Speaker 13: Boss.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Boss, look.
- 18:13Speaker 5: Huh?
- 18:14Speaker 2: Oh, Eddie Johnson and Frankie, eh? How long have they
- 18:16Speaker 2: been here? Nearly an hour, boss. It's the first I've
- 18:19Speaker 2: seen of them since they started that fight here two
- 18:20Speaker 2: days ago. Something's up, Louie.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Hey, look.
- 18:24Speaker 2: They've got black ties on. Yeah. I guess they must
- 18:26Speaker 2: have been at Finnegan's funeral this morning. Finnegan's funeral? Sure, Joe.
- 18:30Speaker 2: He died the day of the fight. Didn't you know?
- 18:36Speaker 2: Sent the remains to Atlantic City. Oh, I think I'd
- 18:39Speaker 2: better talk to Mr. Johnson.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Here he comes, Eddie. Poor Finnegan.
- 18:44Speaker 2: The best friend a man ever had.
- 18:46Speaker 5: A finer Irishman never lived. Oh, hello, Joe.
- 18:50Speaker 2: I just heard about Finnegan. What was it, his heart?
- 18:53Speaker 5: His head, Joe.
- 18:54Speaker 2: His head.
- 18:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:55Speaker 13: Somebody hit him an awful wallop at the bricklayer's party.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Well, I see you're getting the place all fixed up, Joe. Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 2: You know about Finnegan... I know you saw me do it,
- 19:05Speaker 2: but I only pushed him.
- 19:06Speaker 5: Sure, Joe, sure. Except a solid brass rail doesn't know
- 19:09Speaker 5: how to pull its punches.
- 19:11Speaker 2: You guys wouldn't be trying a little high-class blackmail now,
- 19:13Speaker 2: would you?
- 19:13Speaker 5: Joe, how can you say a thing like that? I
- 19:16Speaker 5: lied for you, Joe. I told the coroner he.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Hit his head on a curb.
- 19:19Speaker 13: But if it ever came out that it all happened
- 19:21Speaker 13: in here, we'd have to tell the truth, Eddie.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Of course, Frankie, it wasn't Joe's fault. All they can
- 19:27Speaker 5: do is close this place down as a public nuisance.
- 19:30Speaker 4: And that's a lot easier than manslaughter.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Be ashamed, though, to see a nice place like this
- 19:35Speaker 5: all boarded up. Okay, Eddie, how much do you want? Joe,
- 19:38Speaker 5: you always think the worst of me. All I want
- 19:40Speaker 5: is a chance to make some more money for you.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Go on, talk.
- 19:43Speaker 5: Let me run this place. Let me put on the shows,
- 19:46Speaker 5: give it some real class. All I want is 50%
- 19:48Speaker 5: of any new business I bring in.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Would cost me less to bribe my way out.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Have it your own way. Oh, uh, the coroner asked
- 19:55Speaker 5: me to stop in his office later on.
- 19:57Speaker 2: All right, Eddie. You start work tomorrow.
- 20:00Speaker 5: And have Miss Farley here at 9 o'clock in the morning.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Katie?
- 20:03Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll be changing the whole joint, Joe. And I'm
- 20:06Speaker 5: starting on Kate Farley.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Act II of Coney Island, starring Betty Grable, Victor Mature,
- 20:28Speaker 2: and Barry Sullivan, will follow in a moment. Libby. Don't
- 20:32Speaker 2: you ever get tired of tearing around after the stars?
- 20:34Speaker 14: Do I? Especially a human dynamo like Rosalind Russell. I
- 20:39Speaker 14: did manage, though, to catch her in her dressing room
- 20:40Speaker 14: one day on the Sister Kenny set.
- 20:42Speaker 6: Her enthusiasm about the part is really contagious.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I don't wonder. Her role as Sister Kenny calls for
- 20:48Speaker 2: a bit of everything, from romance with handsome Dean Jagger
- 20:51Speaker 2: to high drama.
- 20:52Speaker 14: Oh, besides, Rosalind Russell is personally interested in that new
- 20:55Speaker 14: technique for treating polio.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Didn't she travel around the country with Elizabeth Kenny before
- 20:59Speaker 2: RKO started the picture? Oh, yes.
- 21:01Speaker 14: Roz was so anxious to play the part of the
- 21:03Speaker 14: Australian nurse just right, they made a tour of hospitals
- 21:06Speaker 14: together during the war.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And wartime traveling must have been hard on both of them.
- 21:09Speaker 14: Well, I asked Roz about that, and she said yes,
- 21:12Speaker 14: there were many problems. And one she worried a lot
- 21:14Speaker 14: about was how to preserve her precious nylons.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Like women everywhere.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Well, with Roz and.
- 21:19Speaker 14: Russell's reputation for being one of the best-dressed women in
- 21:22Speaker 14: the country... Her stockings had to look perfect wherever she went.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Did she manage to keep hers that way?
- 21:27Speaker 3: Oh, yes, indeed.
- 21:28Speaker 4: And guess how?
- 21:29Speaker 2: Our old friend Lux Flakes?
- 21:30Speaker 6: None other. She always carried a box of Lux Flakes
- 21:33Speaker 6: in her suitcase.
- 21:34Speaker 2: There's no doubt that luxing helps nylons last much longer.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Strain tests prove that.
- 21:38Speaker 14: Well, sometimes Roz stayed in nurses' quarters when hotels were full.
- 21:42Speaker 14: And she said she invariably ran into Lux Flakes.
- 21:44Speaker 2: There, too. I've often admired the way a nurse manages
- 21:47Speaker 2: to look spotless from tip to toe.
- 21:49Speaker 6: That's luck for you.
- 21:51Speaker 14: And because nurses are on their feet all day, they're
- 21:53Speaker 14: quick to find out what makes stockings last longer, too.
- 21:57Speaker 14: Whether they wear Lyle, Rayon, or those new white nylons
- 22:00Speaker 14: nurses covet.
- 22:01Speaker 2: It's a fact that all kinds of stockings wear better
- 22:04Speaker 2: if they're washed gently with Luxe. In many, many tests,
- 22:07Speaker 2: stockings washed with a strong soap or rubbed with cake
- 22:10Speaker 2: soap soon went into runs, while Luxe cut runs way down.
- 22:15Speaker 2: And remember, Luxe flakes are precious these days. Don't waste them.
- 22:18Speaker 2: It takes only a teaspoonful of Luxe to wash a
- 22:21Speaker 2: pair of Luxe stockings. Here's your producer, William Keeley.
- 22:26Speaker 3: We continue with Act II of Coney Island, starring Betty
- 22:30Speaker 3: Grable as Kate Farley, Victor Mature as Eddie Johnson, and
- 22:34Speaker 3: Barry Sullivan as Joe Rocco.
- 22:37Speaker 15: ¶ ¶.
- 22:48Speaker 3: Believing that Finnegan is dead, Joe Rocco has made Eddie
- 22:52Speaker 3: a manager of a scenic gardens cafe. The new impresario
- 22:56Speaker 3: spends his first day in hiring an orchestra and revamping
- 23:00Speaker 3: the entertainment program. But Eddie's having his troubles. The program
- 23:04Speaker 3: consists almost entirely of Miss Katie Farley, and Katie Farley
- 23:09Speaker 3: refuses to be revamped.
- 23:12Speaker 6: It's 8 o'clock. You let everybody else go for dinner.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Why can't I?
- 23:14Speaker 5: Because they do what I say and you don't.
- 23:17Speaker 6: If it wasn't for Joe, I'd quit right now.
- 23:19Speaker 5: Oh, cool off. We'll try the number again. I'll play
- 23:21Speaker 5: the piano.
- 23:21Speaker 6: What do you want this time?
- 23:22Speaker 5: You sing too fast. You sing too loud and you
- 23:25Speaker 5: move around too much. Outside of that, you're great.
- 23:27Speaker 6: Everybody sings fast. It's the style.
- 23:29Speaker 5: Then we'll change the style.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I'm trying to make you a little different.
- 23:32Speaker 6: All right, I'll do it again. Go ahead, play.
- 23:36Speaker 15: Cuddle up a little.
- 23:39Speaker 6: Closer, love be mine.
- 23:42Speaker 15: Cuddle up and be my little flinging vine.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Oh, shouty.
- 23:49Speaker 8: Look, if you want your family in Hoboken to hear you,
- 23:51Speaker 8: use the telephone.
- 23:51Speaker 11: Oh, you fourth-rate Velasco, I gotta sing loud. There'll be
- 23:54Speaker 11: a crowd out there tonight, and they make a lot
- 23:56Speaker 11: of noise.
- 23:57Speaker 5: Look, if you're good, they'll stop talking and listen. If
- 23:59Speaker 5: you're not, you can yell your lungs out, and they
- 24:01Speaker 5: still won't hear you.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Look, I've been doing great for a whole year. They
- 24:05Speaker 6: like me here. And nobody's gonna change my style of singing. Nobody.
- 24:09Speaker 6: I'm leaving now, Mr. Eddie Johnson. I'll be back in
- 24:12Speaker 6: time to do my number, my way. Goodbye.
- 24:21Speaker 17: Oh, yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 2: Get ready, Katie. The show starts in a couple of minutes.
- 24:26Speaker 6: I am ready.
- 24:27Speaker 2: In that dress with the feathers... Look, I thought I
- 24:29Speaker 2: told you.
- 24:30Speaker 6: I'm wearing what I like, Mr. Johnson.
- 24:31Speaker 11: I just told the orchestra leader to play the number
- 24:34Speaker 11: my way.
- 24:35Speaker 6: Fast. Good and fast.
- 24:36Speaker 5: I hope you don't move around, Katie. With our new scenery,
- 24:39Speaker 5: you should stand nice and quiet.
- 24:41Speaker 6: In front of a fake moon with a fake tree shining?
- 24:44Speaker 11: I'll have to move around tonight to dodge the vegetables.
- 24:46Speaker 5: Okay, you're the star. You should know.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Oh, well, that's better. Tell him to start playing and
- 24:52Speaker 6: ring up the curtains.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Well, just a minute, Katie.
- 24:54Speaker 6: Hey, what do you think you're doing?
- 24:56Speaker 5: Just fixing the bottom of your dress.
- 24:57Speaker 6: What's wrong with it? Hey, what have you got? Handcuffs?
- 25:01Speaker 6: Get away. Stop it.
- 25:02Speaker 5: Stop it. The handcuffs are for your pretty little ankles.
- 25:06Speaker 5: I borrowed them from the cop outside. I'm afraid you'll
- 25:10Speaker 5: have to stand still now, Katie, or you'll fall flat
- 25:12Speaker 5: on your face.
- 25:13Speaker 6: Take those off of me or so help me, I'll.
- 25:15Speaker 5: And these go around your wrists, sweetheart.
- 25:18Speaker 2: See? Like this. There. That's better.
- 25:22Speaker 11: And how do I walk out on the stage, smart guy?
- 25:24Speaker 5: I carry you out, see?
- 25:26Speaker 2: Very simple.
- 25:27Speaker 6: I'll show you. I'll just stand there. I won't sing
- 25:29Speaker 6: a note.
- 25:30Speaker 5: You look pretty funny, Katie. Hey, the handcuffs on your wrist,
- 25:33Speaker 5: they show. I got to cover them up.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Oh, here's just the thing.
- 25:37Speaker 6: Oh, my feathers.
- 25:39Speaker 12: You're pulling off my feathers.
- 25:40Speaker 5: Hold them in your hand. They'll think it's an ostrich fan.
- 25:42Speaker 6: I paid a lot of money for this dress.
- 25:45Speaker 5: Here's another feather. Guess I should have dipped you first
- 25:47Speaker 5: in boiling water.
- 25:48Speaker 6: Oh, you big baboon, you... Oh, just you wait. You'll
- 25:52Speaker 6: be sorry.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Frankie.
- 25:53Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 25:53Speaker 8: Tell the leader out there if he wants to keep
- 25:55Speaker 8: his job to play slow.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Nice and slow.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Okay.
- 25:59Speaker 5: All set, Miss Farley? Chin up now. Sing nice and pretty.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Get out of here!
- 26:05Speaker 7: Get out!
- 26:06Speaker 3: Cut!
- 26:06Speaker 7: Cut!
- 26:10Speaker 15: Cuddle up a little closer Lovey my Cut! Like to
- 26:39Speaker 15: feel your cheeks so rosy Like to.
- 26:45Speaker 6: Make you cozy, cozy.
- 26:48Speaker 7: Cause I love from head to toesy Love me more
- 27:02Speaker 7: Like to feel your cheeks © BF-WATCH TV 2021.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Katie, you did swell.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Now, up we go.
- 27:51Speaker 6: What are you doing now? Put me down.
- 27:53Speaker 5: You can't walk with handcuffs on your feet. I'm taking
- 27:55Speaker 5: you to your dressing room. I want to talk to you.
- 27:58Speaker 6: I can hear just as well with these things on.
- 28:00Speaker 6: They hurt.
- 28:01Speaker 5: You could kick, though, and start tossing vases. Well, what
- 28:04Speaker 5: do you think of my way of singing now?
- 28:06Speaker 6: That applause wasn't so much.
- 28:08Speaker 5: You couldn't have gotten more if you were a parade.
- 28:11Speaker 6: Hey, my dressing room. Now, get these things off.
- 28:15Speaker 5: In a minute, Katie.
- 28:16Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:18Speaker 5: They liked you tonight. There wasn't a sound while you sang.
- 28:22Speaker 5: For once, you had real class.
- 28:24Speaker 6: Where do you get off talking to me like that?
- 28:26Speaker 6: There are a lot of people around here who like
- 28:28Speaker 6: me just the way I am, see?
- 28:29Speaker 5: Sure, but more people will like you if you'll just
- 28:31Speaker 5: listen to me. You've got warmth, appeal, you're attractive. Yeah,
- 28:36Speaker 5: in fact, you're so attractive, I think I gotta kiss you.
- 28:39Speaker 6: Get away from me!
- 28:40Speaker 11: There.
- 28:41Speaker 3: There.
- 28:42Speaker 5: And you'll be still more attractive if you just dress
- 28:45Speaker 5: instead of overdressing.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I'm no dummy.
- 28:47Speaker 5: I went to school, finished the 10th grade.
- 28:50Speaker 2: I even....
- 28:52Speaker 3: Oh.
- 28:53Speaker 5: Oh, here's that feeling again. I need another kiss.
- 28:57Speaker 6: Is that what you learned in the 10th grade?
- 28:59Speaker 5: No, that's why I was kicked out of the 11th.
- 29:02Speaker 6: Oh, just wait till I get out of these chains.
- 29:06Speaker 6: I'll slap your face so hard.
- 29:08Speaker 5: It'll... No, you won't. Because you know that everything I
- 29:10Speaker 5: told you is right. Okay, I'll take the handcuffs off now.
- 29:19Speaker 5: They're off, Katie. And here's my face.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Go ahead. Slap. Oh.
- 29:27Speaker 6: Oh, get out of here. Please get out.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Good night, Katie.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Good night. And thanks.
- 29:36Speaker 15: Good night.
- 29:46Speaker 2: Oh, come in, Eddie, come in. I thought it was
- 29:48Speaker 2: about time we did a little bookkeeping.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Any complaints?
- 29:51Speaker 2: Complaints? In three weeks, you've turned this place into a
- 29:53Speaker 2: gold mine. We've taken in nearly $ 20, 000 with a net
- 29:56Speaker 2: of $ 5, 000 over average business. You get 50%, Eddie. Here
- 30:00Speaker 2: it is.
- 30:01Speaker 5: You know, Joe, for $ 30, 000, we could buy us a
- 30:03Speaker 5: new place.
- 30:04Speaker 2: You're going to think of more ways of spending my dough.
- 30:07Speaker 5: Not yours.
- 30:08Speaker 13: Ours.
- 30:09Speaker 5: Take my cut of the profits each week and put
- 30:11Speaker 5: up the same amount yourself. Before you know it, we'll
- 30:13Speaker 5: have enough.
- 30:14Speaker 2: No, I'm making all I want right here. And why
- 30:16Speaker 2: kid ourselves? We're doing great because of Katie. She's been sensational.
- 30:19Speaker 5: That's right.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but how long can she stay on top?
- 30:22Speaker 5: She's not on top. She's just starting. Give her time,
- 30:24Speaker 5: she'll be the biggest star in years.
- 30:26Speaker 2: You know, for a guy who's always battling with Katie,
- 30:28Speaker 2: you seem to have a lot of faith in her.
- 30:30Speaker 5: She's swell, Joe. I'm getting very fond of Katie.
- 30:34Speaker 2: Oh, is that so? Well, I just assume you and
- 30:37Speaker 2: Katie keep it on a strictly business basis, Eddie.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Oh?
- 30:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I always had the silly idea that Katie was
- 30:44Speaker 2: my girl. You know what I mean?
- 30:46Speaker 5: Oh, sure, Joe, I know. Well, we'll see, huh? That's right,
- 30:51Speaker 5: we'll see.
- 30:52Speaker 10: Eddie!
- 30:53Speaker 2: Eddie LeVar!
- 30:54Speaker 8: Are you there?
- 30:55Speaker 2: Eddie! Who is it?
- 30:56Speaker 4: Finnegan! Greetings from Atlantic City!
- 30:59Speaker 2: Finnegan!
- 31:02Speaker 5: When?
- 31:02Speaker 4: Say something, boys. Are you not glad to see your
- 31:05Speaker 4: dear old friend?
- 31:06Speaker 5: Hello, Finnegan. What?
- 31:08Speaker 2: Hello?
- 31:09Speaker 4: Joe, you look like you're seeing a ghost.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Well, that's just what I am seeing. Or am I, Eddie?
- 31:15Speaker 4: Say, what is this? Everybody stares at me so queer-like. Why,
- 31:18Speaker 4: two of the boys downstairs signed the pledge as soon
- 31:21Speaker 4: as I walked.
- 31:21Speaker 6: In the door.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Finnegan, I'll see you later. Later, huh? Oh, you're busy. Sure, Eddie.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Oh, it was a lovely time. I had a lovely,
- 31:32Speaker 4: lovely time.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Well?
- 31:36Speaker 5: Joe, I told you I'd worm in here one way
- 31:38Speaker 5: or another.
- 31:39Speaker 2: You slipped over a fast one and tripled my business.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I like being taken that way. Joe, what about a
- 31:44Speaker 2: new place? It can wait.
- 31:45Speaker 5: Better come in on it with me, Joe. If you don't,
- 31:47Speaker 5: I'll buy it myself, Katie and me, and we'll take
- 31:50Speaker 5: all your business away.
- 31:51Speaker 2: But I wouldn't like that, Eddie. I wouldn't like that
- 31:54Speaker 2: at all.
- 32:04Speaker 6: Good morning, sir. May I help you?
- 32:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm Joe Rocco. I have an appointment with Mr. Hammerstein.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Oh, yes, sir.
- 32:09Speaker 10: Go right in.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Thank you. I'm Rocco, Mr. Hammerstein.
- 32:14Speaker 18: Oh, sit down, young man. I've just been reading the
- 32:17Speaker 18: press notices about Miss Farley. I have to admit, these
- 32:20Speaker 18: hard-boiled critics seem to back up.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Everything you said. Oh, she's really wonderful, Mr. Hammerstein.
- 32:25Speaker 18: Well, society doesn't flock down to Coney Island for nothing.
- 32:29Speaker 18: How long has this been going on?
- 32:30Speaker 2: Well, she started to click about three months ago.
- 32:34Speaker 18: I can't understand why you come to me, Rocco. If
- 32:36Speaker 18: I thought she'd be good for my new show, I'd
- 32:38Speaker 18: try to steal her from you.
- 32:40Speaker 2: But Katie belongs here on Broadway. She's too good for
- 32:42Speaker 2: Coney Island.
- 32:43Speaker 5: Well, I'll certainly drop out and hear her sing.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Fine. When can you make it? I can't say exactly.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Next week, probably. Thanks a lot, Mr. Hammerstein. Not at all.
- 32:51Speaker 2: I'll telephone you before I come. Goodbye, Rocco.
- 33:12Speaker 6: And now a new number.
- 33:13Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen.
- 33:14Speaker 8: Miss Kate Farley singing, Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey.
- 33:20Speaker 15: Put your arms around me, honey.
- 33:25Speaker 7: Hold me tight.
- 33:27Speaker 15: Huddle up and cuddle up with all your might.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Oh, baby.
- 33:33Speaker 15: Won't you roll them eyes I said I just idolize When.
- 33:41Speaker 17: They look at me My heart begins to float Then
- 33:45Speaker 17: it starts a-rockin' Like a motorboat Oh.
- 33:50Speaker 15: Oh, I never knew Any boy.
- 33:56Speaker 3: Like you.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Honey, you were never better.
- 34:06Speaker 6: Oh, thank you, Eddie.
- 34:07Speaker 2: You got it at last. The trick of making every
- 34:09Speaker 2: guy feel you're singing just for him.
- 34:12Speaker 6: It's easy when it's not a trick, Eddie.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Huh?
- 34:15Speaker 5: Katie, you mean that? You mean all those pear-shaped tones
- 34:19Speaker 5: were just for me?
- 34:21Speaker 6: Couldn't you tell?
- 34:21Speaker 5: Oh, come on now.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Hurry up and change. I've got things to talk about.
- 34:27Speaker 6: I won't be long. Wait for me.
- 34:29Speaker 2: Eddie. Oh, Joe. Say, she did great, didn't she? Look, Eddie. Eddie,
- 34:33Speaker 2: trim me out of my dough if you want to,
- 34:35Speaker 2: and if you can, I can laugh about that. But
- 34:38Speaker 2: when it comes to Katie, I lose my sense of humor.
- 34:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't do that, Joe.
- 34:41Speaker 5: You may need it.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Well, I just want you to know I'm going to
- 34:43Speaker 2: do everything I can to break it up between you two.
- 34:45Speaker 5: I'll tell you something. I'm going to be leaving here
- 34:47Speaker 5: in a few weeks. I'm getting a new place. But
- 34:50Speaker 5: you still can have half if you want. I'm doing
- 34:53Speaker 5: fine right here. I won't ask you again, Joe. It's
- 34:55Speaker 5: smart you haven't got that kind of cash. That's why
- 34:57Speaker 5: I went to the Brooklyn Savings Bank. They said if
- 35:00Speaker 5: I have Kate Forty, they'd loan me $ 20, 000. Yeah?
- 35:02Speaker 2: And what makes you think Katie will go with you?
- 35:06Speaker 5: Love is a wonderful thing, Joe. A wonderful thing is love.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Eddie, Eddie, Eddie.
- 35:22Speaker 5: Eddie, where's Joe? He said something about a poker game
- 35:24Speaker 5: at the Continental.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Yeah? What are you all excited about? Downstairs, Hammerstein. William
- 35:27Speaker 2: Hammerstein's downstairs. Well, what about who?
- 35:30Speaker 5: Hammerstein.
- 35:30Speaker 8: Hammerstein, the producer.
- 35:32Speaker 2: He says Joe asked him to come and hear Katie.
- 35:33Speaker 5: Funny Joe didn't say something.
- 35:35Speaker 8: Well, he told Joe he'd be down next week, but
- 35:37Speaker 8: he just happened to be at Brighton tonight, so he
- 35:39Speaker 8: came on over.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Hey, I'll go and tell Katie.
- 35:42Speaker 5: Don't you see what Joe's trying to do? I want
- 35:45Speaker 5: to open up that new cafe. If Katie comes with me,
- 35:48Speaker 5: I get a big loan from the bank. But if
- 35:50Speaker 5: Katie goes to Hammerstein, I'm licked. Yeah, but what do
- 35:54Speaker 5: we do now? Look, if Joe can play poker... I
- 35:57Speaker 5: guess it's okay if Katie and I take the evening off, too.
- 35:59Speaker 5: But she's got a number coming up. Dolly knows her songs.
- 36:03Speaker 5: Dolly will sing. Well, that's what understudies are for. Besides,
- 36:07Speaker 5: I wouldn't want to disappoint Mr. Hammerstein.
- 36:09Speaker 2: But Dolly is a comic.
- 36:10Speaker 5: She'll sound awful. I hope so. But Hammerstein will think
- 36:14Speaker 5: she's Katie.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Oh.
- 36:17Speaker 5: You know that sign with Katie's name on it? The
- 36:20Speaker 5: great big one on the side of the stage? Uh-huh.
- 36:22Speaker 5: See that it stays there when Dolly sings. I'll talk
- 36:26Speaker 5: to Hammerstein now. Go get Katie and tell her to
- 36:28Speaker 5: meet me at the side entrance.
- 36:30Speaker 2: Okay, Eddie.
- 36:30Speaker 7: I hope you know what you're doing.
- 36:40Speaker 6: Gee, it's wonderful here, Eddie.
- 36:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:43Speaker 5: Beach fires in the sand. Stars in the sky. Moon
- 36:48Speaker 5: on the water.
- 36:49Speaker 6: I could stay here all night. Except I feel awful
- 36:52Speaker 6: guilty about running out like this.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Oh, forget it.
- 36:55Speaker 5: There's nobody important in the cafe and... You only miss
- 36:58Speaker 5: one number. Besides, it's a swell break for Dolly.
- 37:02Speaker 6: Listen, a moonlight picnic on the beach. Lucky people.
- 37:07Speaker 5: We'll do that, too, someday. After I get my own place.
- 37:11Speaker 6: You sure have big plans, Eddie.
- 37:12Speaker 5: Why not?
- 37:14Speaker 2: And you know who's going to sing for me? Who?
- 37:17Speaker 5: Katie Farley.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Really?
- 37:19Speaker 5: I've got to have you, Katie. I want everything to
- 37:22Speaker 5: be the best.
- 37:23Speaker 6: That's the nicest compliment you ever paid me. You know,
- 37:27Speaker 6: if you're not careful, you're going to wind up owning
- 37:28Speaker 6: Coney Island.
- 37:29Speaker 5: I intend to.
- 37:30Speaker 6: What a guy. And what a sap.
- 37:33Speaker 5: Sap? Me?
- 37:34Speaker 6: No, me. I've fallen for you, Eddie. I've fallen awful hard.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Katie, you'll never be sorry, honey.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Never.
- 38:01Speaker 6: Oh, I never knew any boy like you.
- 38:21Speaker 2: And she does two more songs later on, Mr. Hammerstein.
- 38:25Speaker 2: That's fine, but I think I've heard enough. Tell Mr.
- 38:28Speaker 2: Rocco I was greatly impressed. Well, thanks, Mr. Hammerstein.
- 38:33Speaker 8: Goodbye.
- 38:34Speaker 5: Mr.
- 38:34Speaker 8: Hammerstein.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Oh, hello, Rocco. I understood you were out. Yeah, I was,
- 38:38Speaker 2: but one of my boys telephoned me you were here.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I came right back. Oh, that's all right. Mr.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Johnson took very good care of me.
- 38:44Speaker 2: What did you think of Miss Farley? Well, as you
- 38:46Speaker 2: told me, she's very, uh... Unusual. I'll think it over
- 38:52Speaker 2: and let you know. Good night. Good night, Mr. Hammerstein. Oh, Frankie. Frankie,
- 38:56Speaker 2: tell Katie to come over here. Oh, well, I'll look
- 39:00Speaker 2: for her, Joe. What do you mean you'll look for her?
- 39:01Speaker 2: Where is she? Well, you see, Joe, it's like this.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Say, Joe, I heard a wonderful story tonight.
- 39:08Speaker 2: It seems there were two fellas... What goes on around here? Oh,
- 39:11Speaker 2: there's Katie now, coming in the front entrance with Eddie.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Where have they been?
- 39:14Speaker 4: Well, just as I was saying, Joe, these two folks.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Get out of here. Katie.
- 39:19Speaker 6: Hello, Joe.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Can I talk to you a minute, Katie?
- 39:22Speaker 6: Why, sure. You're not sore, are you, Joe?
- 39:24Speaker 2: Sore? What about?
- 39:26Speaker 11: Well, Eddie and I went for a little walk. I
- 39:28Speaker 11: skipped my last number. Dolly did it for me.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Oh, no wonder I couldn't figure it out.
- 39:34Speaker 5: Figure what out, Joe?
- 39:35Speaker 2: I think you can guess, but I'd better tell Katie.
- 39:37Speaker 6: What are you talking about?
- 39:39Speaker 2: Katie, William Hammerstein was here a little while ago. He
- 39:41Speaker 2: came just to hear you sing.
- 39:43Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I invited him. He's looking for a singer.
- 39:45Speaker 6: Oh, but why didn't you tell me?
- 39:47Speaker 2: I expected him next week. But Eddie knew he was here.
- 39:50Speaker 5: How did I know it was Hammerstein? I never.
- 39:52Speaker 2: I never saw him in my life. Yeah, that's very funny.
- 39:54Speaker 2: He told me Mr. Johnson had taken very good care
- 39:57Speaker 2: of him. And you know, Katie, when he heard Dolly sing,
- 39:59Speaker 2: he thought it was you.
- 40:01Speaker 6: How could he get that idea?
- 40:02Speaker 2: Look up on that stage. Somebody didn't bother to change
- 40:05Speaker 2: the signs. I see.
- 40:09Speaker 6: Looks like Mr. Johnson took care of a lot of people.
- 40:11Speaker 5: Now, wait a minute, Katie. I.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Why didn't you tell me?
- 40:13Speaker 2: Shall I tell her, Eddie? Go with you. Tell her.
- 40:16Speaker 2: It's all very simple, Katie. If Hammerstein heard you and
- 40:19Speaker 2: signed you for his show, then Eddie wouldn't have you
- 40:21Speaker 2: for his new cafe. And without you, there isn't going
- 40:24Speaker 2: to be any cafe.
- 40:25Speaker 5: That's not true.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Now, look, Katie.
- 40:26Speaker 8: Eddie, before you quit, I just want you to know
- 40:28Speaker 8: you're fired.
- 40:29Speaker 6: And thanks, Eddie. Thanks a lot for taking me out tonight. I'll...
- 40:35Speaker 6: I'll never forget it.
- 40:51Speaker 2: We pause now for station identification. This is CBS, the
- 40:55Speaker 2: Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 40:58Speaker 7: ¶ ¶.
- 41:23Speaker 3: Before our stars, Betty Grable, Victor Mature, and Barry Sullivan,
- 41:27Speaker 3: return in Act Three of Coney Island, I want to
- 41:30Speaker 3: introduce tonight's special guest, Yvonne Robb, who is casting a
- 41:34Speaker 3: fine glow over the 20th century fox lot. You know, Yvonne,
- 41:38Speaker 3: I didn't remember your hair was chestnut. It looked black
- 41:41Speaker 3: when I saw you making Anne and the King of Siam.
- 41:43Speaker 6: That's right, Mr.
- 41:44Speaker 16: Keeley, but it was just mascara sprayed on. As a
- 41:47Speaker 16: king's favorite wife, I had to look Siamese.
- 41:49Speaker 2: And wear a sarong.
- 41:51Speaker 16: Well, I got a little tired of that, especially when
- 41:54Speaker 16: I discovered Gene Tierney on the next set.
- 41:56Speaker 3: In Daryl Zanuck's production of The Razor's Edge.
- 41:58Speaker 6: That's right.
- 41:59Speaker 16: And I was positively green with envy because Gene was
- 42:02Speaker 16: wearing some of the most glamorous clothes I've ever seen.
- 42:05Speaker 2: Like?
- 42:06Speaker 16: Oh, a white lace wedding gown they say cost $ 2, 500.
- 42:09Speaker 16: And gorgeous chiffon lingerie and a beautiful satin brocade pajamas.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Well, they sound charming, but a bit impractical perhaps.
- 42:19Speaker 6: Well, that's what I thought at first.
- 42:21Speaker 16: But I was talking with the wardrobe mistress, and she
- 42:23Speaker 16: said that lovely lingerie had seen a lot of retakes.
- 42:26Speaker 16: Of course, the things got soiled. So, each time they
- 42:29Speaker 16: were washed in luxe flakes.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Well, perhaps in your next picture, you can have as
- 42:33Speaker 3: glamorous a wardrobe as Jean did for Somerset Maugham's novel.
- 42:37Speaker 6: It would be fun.
- 42:38Speaker 16: But I do have something in common with all that
- 42:40Speaker 16: glamour right now. I've used luxe flakes for all my
- 42:43Speaker 16: own lingerie as far back as I can remember.
- 42:46Speaker 2: You'd probably be surprised, too, how much that has saved you.
- 42:49Speaker 6: Well, I do know, Mr.
- 42:50Speaker 16: Kennedy, that my things stay lovely looking for.
- 42:52Speaker 6: A long time.
- 42:53Speaker 2: As a matter of fact, lots of girls have found
- 42:55Speaker 2: they can have three times as many pretty undies by
- 42:57Speaker 2: giving them LuxCare.
- 42:59Speaker 16: How do you mean?
- 43:00Speaker 2: Why, instead of having to replace faded, old-looking undies all
- 43:03Speaker 2: the time, they can afford to buy extra ones, three
- 43:06Speaker 2: times as many. That's because wrong washing methods fade nice
- 43:10Speaker 2: things too soon, while gentle Lux care keeps undies lovely
- 43:13Speaker 2: three times as long.
- 43:15Speaker 6: I wish I could.
- 43:15Speaker 16: Always find Lux flakes these days when I want them.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Just keep on trying. Dealers get deliveries regularly, so keep asking.
- 43:22Speaker 2: If you don't get it the first time, try again.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Lux is worth waiting for. Here's Mr. Keeley at the microphone.
- 43:29Speaker 3: After our final curtain, we hope you'll join us for
- 43:32Speaker 3: a brief chat with tonight's stars. Here's Act Three of
- 43:36Speaker 3: Coney Island, starring Betty Grable as Kate Farley, Victor Mature
- 43:40Speaker 3: as Eddie Johnson, and Barry Sullivan as Joe Rocco. Katie
- 43:54Speaker 3: missed one opportunity to sing for William Hammerstein, but Joe
- 43:58Speaker 3: Rocco quickly arranged another audition. He's taken Katie to New
- 44:04Speaker 3: York and sits with a producer in Hammerstein's theater. On
- 44:08Speaker 3: the empty stage, Katie is finishing her number.
- 44:12Speaker 7: Oh, dear.
- 44:14Speaker 6: Like to make you.
- 44:16Speaker 7: Comfy, cozy Cause I love from head to toes.
- 44:25Speaker 17: The love in my heart Well, Mr.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Hammerstein. Oh, she's all right. It's no use. Your smile
- 44:39Speaker 2: gave you away.
- 44:41Speaker 18: Well, I thought if I acted hard-boiled, I might get
- 44:44Speaker 18: her for less money.
- 44:45Speaker 6: I can do another chorus if you'd like.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Katie, you were great.
- 44:48Speaker 6: Wonderful.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Mr.
- 44:49Speaker 18: Rocco and I are just going into my office to
- 44:51Speaker 18: talk about a deal.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Wait right there, Katie. I'll just be a few minutes.
- 44:54Speaker 6: I'll wait. Oh, I want to thank you. You played
- 44:58Speaker 6: the song exactly.
- 45:00Speaker 5: Eddie.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Hello, Katie.
- 45:02Speaker 6: What were you doing down there in the orchestra, Ted?
- 45:04Speaker 5: Playing for you. I told Hammerstein's pianist you were expecting me.
- 45:08Speaker 5: That and five bucks seemed to convince him. Katie, could
- 45:12Speaker 5: you give me just one more minute? There are a
- 45:14Speaker 5: lot of things I want to explain.
- 45:17Speaker 6: I listened to you once before. Of all the selfish, conniving.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 45:22Speaker 5: Remember me? I'm the guy who just played the piano
- 45:25Speaker 5: for you. If I'd wanted to, I could have crabbed
- 45:28Speaker 5: your act awful easy. I didn't, though, because I want
- 45:31Speaker 5: you to get that job. I'm sorry about the other time, Katie, honest.
- 45:36Speaker 6: And that makes everything all right, I suppose.
- 45:38Speaker 5: No, but it should make you take that cotton out
- 45:40Speaker 5: of your ears long enough for me to tell you
- 45:41Speaker 5: why I did it.
- 45:42Speaker 6: I know why. You want that new plane.
- 45:44Speaker 5: Sure I do. But that wasn't the real reason. I
- 45:48Speaker 5: didn't want you to work for Hammerstein because, well, it
- 45:51Speaker 5: would put too much distance between us.
- 45:53Speaker 11: Oh, Eddie, it's exactly 11 miles from here to Coney Island.
- 45:57Speaker 5: I'm not talking about that kind of distance. Once you
- 46:00Speaker 5: hit Broadway, you'd be a million miles from me. It's
- 46:03Speaker 5: happened so many times before, Katie, and I just didn't
- 46:05Speaker 5: want to lose you. You see, I happen to love you.
- 46:09Speaker 5: That's why I did it. I guess that's all I
- 46:13Speaker 5: have to say.
- 46:14Speaker 2: Eddie.
- 46:15Speaker 6: Oh, Eddie, get me out of here. Quickly.
- 46:18Speaker 5: But what about Hammerstein? Broadway?
- 46:22Speaker 11: I'm from Coney Island, Eddie, and right now I feel
- 46:25Speaker 11: an awful long way from home.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Where have you been, Katie? What happened to you? Six
- 46:38Speaker 2: hours ago, I left you on a stage in New York.
- 46:40Speaker 6: I'm sorry, Joe, but Eddie came along and I.
- 46:43Speaker 5: I figured it would be better if Katie wasn't around
- 46:45Speaker 5: while you and Hammerstein were talking business.
- 46:47Speaker 2: Hammerstein wanted you to sign a contract.
- 46:49Speaker 6: So did Eddie. Look, Joe.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Oh, marriage license, huh?
- 46:54Speaker 5: That's right. It looks just like a liquor license, except
- 46:57Speaker 5: it's got little cupids running all over it.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Well, congratulations. When's the wedding?
- 47:02Speaker 5: Tomorrow afternoon, Joe. And I'd like you to be the
- 47:04Speaker 5: best man.
- 47:05Speaker 2: Thanks, that's... That's swell. What did I tell Hammerstein?
- 47:09Speaker 11: We just spoke to him on the telephone. He's not
- 47:11Speaker 11: starting rehearsals until August, and he said we'll have plenty
- 47:14Speaker 11: of time for a honeymoon.
- 47:15Speaker 2: You mean you still want to sign with Hammerstein?
- 47:17Speaker 6: Oh, you bet.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Surprised, Joe? Oh, frankly, yes. I thought you wanted Katie
- 47:21Speaker 2: for your new cafe. I did.
- 47:23Speaker 5: I want her more as my wife.
- 47:24Speaker 6: Well, Joe, we'll see you at the church.
- 47:26Speaker 5: The little one across from Brighton Park, tomorrow afternoon at 4.30.
- 47:29Speaker 2: I'll be there.
- 47:30Speaker 6: You see, Joe, it all worked out just beautifully.
- 47:33Speaker 2: Yeah, beautifully. Louie? Yeah? Remember Sylvester Keen? That broken-down actor? Sure.
- 47:42Speaker 2: He blew in last week. He was looking for a job.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Now get hold of him. Tell him he's got a job.
- 47:55Speaker 6: Dolly, it's 4.30. Where could he be?
- 47:57Speaker 12: Joe said Louie's bringing Eddie in an automobile. Probably got
- 48:01Speaker 12: a flat tire. I'm going out to look for him.
- 48:03Speaker 12: You stay right here in this room. It's bad luck
- 48:06Speaker 12: to go inside before the wedding march.
- 48:08Speaker 6: I ought to know. I've been married four times. Then
- 48:11Speaker 6: you find him. Okay, I'll find him.
- 48:14Speaker 9: Oh, excuse me.
- 48:15Speaker 2: I was about to knock. Miss Farley?
- 48:18Speaker 12: No, that's Miss Farley in there.
- 48:20Speaker 6: Who is it?
- 48:20Speaker 9: I'm Sylvester Keene from the Brooklyn Savings Bank.
- 48:24Speaker 6: Don't tell me I've overdrawn my account.
- 48:27Speaker 2: Oh, no, no.
- 48:28Speaker 9: I wanted to speak to Mr. Johnson, but I understand
- 48:31Speaker 9: he isn't here yet. I thought perhaps you could give
- 48:34Speaker 9: him a message.
- 48:34Speaker 6: Why, certainly.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Just tell Mr.
- 48:36Speaker 9: Johnson we've decided to loan him $ 20, 000 for his new cafe.
- 48:40Speaker 11: Oh, why, that's wonderful. But if anyone can make a
- 48:43Speaker 11: success out of a cafe, it's Mr.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Johnson.
- 48:46Speaker 9: Well, frankly, Miss Farley, we consider your reputation a little
- 48:49Speaker 9: better security than his. An attraction like you would make
- 48:52Speaker 9: any cafe a success.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Thank you, but I won't be singing in his cafe.
- 48:57Speaker 6: I'm going to work for William Hammerstein.
- 48:59Speaker 2: You are?
- 49:00Speaker 6: Why, why, yes.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Why, that's strange.
- 49:03Speaker 5: Mr.
- 49:04Speaker 9: Johnson called us just a little while ago and said
- 49:06Speaker 9: that now that you and he were going to be married,
- 49:09Speaker 9: you had changed your mind.
- 49:10Speaker 2: You were staying in Coney Island.
- 49:13Speaker 6: He told you that?
- 49:14Speaker 2: Oh, dear, dear, that changes everything.
- 49:17Speaker 9: Well, I am certainly glad we had this little talk.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Miss Farley.
- 49:21Speaker 6: Yes, so am I.
- 49:23Speaker 9: I'm sorry if I said anything that.
- 49:24Speaker 6: He's here, Katie. Eddie's here. They got stuck in traffic.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Well, goodbye, Miss Farley.
- 49:29Speaker 6: Goodbye.
- 49:29Speaker 2: Katie, here are your railroad tickets. Two days in Niagara
- 49:32Speaker 2: Falls and down through Canada into Detroit.
- 49:34Speaker 6: Excuse me a minute. Eddie, I'll get him for you, honey.
- 49:38Speaker 2: Please.
- 49:39Speaker 6: And Joe, do you mind? No.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Want to be alone with him, huh? Well, I'll tell
- 49:44Speaker 2: the preacher each here.
- 49:45Speaker 5: How are you, Mrs.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Johnson? Here, posies for the train.
- 49:49Speaker 6: Close the door, Eddie.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Sure.
- 49:52Speaker 6: Eddie, a man was here just now from the bank.
- 49:55Speaker 2: He was?
- 49:57Speaker 5: What'd he want?
- 49:58Speaker 6: Did you tell him that I was going to be
- 49:59Speaker 6: singing for you?
- 50:01Speaker 5: Last week I said I might be able to get you,
- 50:03Speaker 5: but that was before Hammerstein... You spoke to them again today. Today?
- 50:07Speaker 6: You told them you had me all sewed up.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Now, wait a minute. I don't know who was here
- 50:12Speaker 5: or what he said, but I.
- 50:13Speaker 6: Don't lie, Eddie.
- 50:14Speaker 11: You know you couldn't get the money without me. What
- 50:16Speaker 11: was your plan this time? To convince me on our honeymoon?
- 50:19Speaker 5: Katie, you don't honestly think that.
- 50:23Speaker 2: Do you?
- 50:23Speaker 6: What do you want me to think?
- 50:25Speaker 5: That I'm marrying you because I love you and for
- 50:27Speaker 5: no other reason.
- 50:28Speaker 6: Isn't there anything you'd like to explain?
- 50:32Speaker 5: I'm not even going to try to.
- 50:35Speaker 2: Katie.
- 50:36Speaker 5: You've got to believe me. Because down deep, you just
- 50:39Speaker 5: know I'm on the level. Unless you do, our marriage
- 50:42Speaker 5: won't be worth a hoot.
- 50:44Speaker 6: Is that all, Eddie?
- 50:46Speaker 2: That's all.
- 50:48Speaker 5: Someday you'll find out I'm telling the truth, except then
- 50:51Speaker 5: it may be too late. If you leave me now, well,
- 50:56Speaker 5: I guess it's all over. You know that, don't you? Yes,
- 51:00Speaker 5: I know that. What are you going to do?
- 51:04Speaker 6: What I have to. I'm leaving now.
- 51:16Speaker 9: Intermission, ten minutes.
- 51:17Speaker 3: Smoking in the outer lobby, please.
- 51:20Speaker 12: Why, the girls are wonderful.
- 51:22Speaker 6: Wherever do they find them?
- 51:23Speaker 2: That Farley girl is the whole show. I could see
- 51:25Speaker 2: her every night in the... Well, Eddie, looks like she's in.
- 51:27Speaker 5: Yeah, she's got them standing on their ears for... Frankie.
- 51:32Speaker 5: I swore I wouldn't do this, but I've got to.
- 51:34Speaker 2: Gotta do what?
- 51:36Speaker 5: I'm going backstage, Frankie. I'll see you later.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Well, it's about time. Good luck, Eddie. I hear what
- 51:48Speaker 2: they're saying, Katie. Sensational. And wait till they hear the
- 51:51Speaker 2: third act.
- 51:52Speaker 6: Oh, thanks, Joe. But I'll believe it when I see
- 51:53Speaker 6: it in the morning paper.
- 51:55Speaker 2: I saw Eddie in the lobby, Katie. If you want,
- 51:57Speaker 2: I'll ask him to drop in later.
- 51:59Speaker 6: In case he has the same idea, tell himself to
- 52:03Speaker 6: save the trouble.
- 52:04Speaker 2: You really mean that?
- 52:06Speaker 6: What do you think?
- 52:08Speaker 2: I think it's about time I gave you this.
- 52:11Speaker 4: Oh, Joe.
- 52:13Speaker 6: Joe, it's beautiful.
- 52:15Speaker 2: And I didn't win it in a card game either.
- 52:18Speaker 2: It's one ring I bought in a jewelry store. Hey, hey,
- 52:21Speaker 2: that's the wrong hand. That's a left-handed ring.
- 52:25Speaker 5: Oh.
- 52:26Speaker 2: No go, huh?
- 52:28Speaker 6: Joe, I.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Forget it, Katie. But keep the ring. Just because a
- 52:32Speaker 2: hay burner runs second, he doesn't ask for his entry
- 52:34Speaker 2: fee back.
- 52:35Speaker 6: I'm so sorry, Joe.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Katie. Katie, listen. Since I did run out of the money,
- 52:41Speaker 2: there's something you ought to know. That day in the
- 52:43Speaker 2: church when you were going to be married, I.
- 52:45Speaker 6: Come in.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Hello, Katie. Joe.
- 52:50Speaker 6: Uh, hello, Eddie.
- 52:52Speaker 5: I just wanted to tell you how swell it's going here.
- 52:54Speaker 5: Even better than I thought you'd be.
- 52:56Speaker 6: Well, thanks, Eddie. How have you been?
- 52:58Speaker 5: Oh, fine. Opening the cafe next month. Will you drop out?
- 53:01Speaker 6: Sure. Where's it going to be?
- 53:03Speaker 2: Where?
- 53:04Speaker 5: Why, in the same building I opened.
- 53:07Speaker 6: I thought you took an option on that building, Joe.
- 53:10Speaker 5: I did.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Eddie, I hate to tell you this, but the reason
- 53:12Speaker 2: I let the option expire was because the fire commissioner
- 53:14Speaker 2: tipped me off. They're going to condemn the building.
- 53:16Speaker 5: I hate to tell you this, Joe, but that guy
- 53:18Speaker 5: wasn't the fire commissioner.
- 53:20Speaker 2: Oh, just a friend of yours?
- 53:21Speaker 14: Uh-huh.
- 53:23Speaker 6: The way you two double-cross each other and smile about
- 53:25Speaker 6: it beats me.
- 53:26Speaker 2: Yeah, we've sure pulled some beauty.
- 53:27Speaker 5: Remember the time you got me that date with a
- 53:29Speaker 5: blonde and she turned out to be the sheriff's wife?
- 53:32Speaker 8: It was nothing.
- 53:33Speaker 2: What about when I was running that freak show in Toledo?
- 53:35Speaker 8: You painted the mayor's face on the sword swallow's back
- 53:37Speaker 8: and I got 30 days for it. And in Memphis,
- 53:39Speaker 8: Joe pays me off in counterfeit bills, Katie, and I
- 53:42Speaker 8: get tight and try to cash one of them at
- 53:43Speaker 8: the police station.
- 53:44Speaker 5: Ha, ha, ha, ha.
- 53:45Speaker 8: And what about that day at the church when you
- 53:47Speaker 8: sent that guy over who was supposed to be from
- 53:49Speaker 8: the bank? Sylvester Keene. Oh, that one really hit the jackpot.
- 53:54Speaker 8: You should have seen his makeup, Eddie. Absolutely perfect.
- 53:56Speaker 2: I'll bet it was, Joe. And when Louie told me
- 53:58Speaker 2: he stole you off by getting caught in traffic, I
- 54:00Speaker 2: thought I'd... I thought I'd... Oh.
- 54:05Speaker 5: Well, Miss Farley, now you know.
- 54:09Speaker 6: Joe, was that the something you wanted to tell me?
- 54:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:15Speaker 2: Yeah, he still loves you, Katie. Don't let him get
- 54:16Speaker 2: away from you again.
- 54:18Speaker 6: That's so easy to say.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Curtain going up, Miss Farley. Things will work out. You'll see.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Good luck. Eddie!
- 54:29Speaker 4: What in the world are you doing out here?
- 54:31Speaker 2: Hello, Katie.
- 54:36Speaker 5: I could ask the same question.
- 54:38Speaker 11: At 9 o'clock at night, you should be tending the business.
- 54:41Speaker 11: By the way, how is the new place?
- 54:42Speaker 5: Oh, fine.
- 54:43Speaker 2: I'd like you to see it.
- 54:44Speaker 6: Maybe later, Annie.
- 54:46Speaker 11: You see, I got a telegram from Joe, and he
- 54:47Speaker 11: said to meet him on the Coney Island Pier at
- 54:49Speaker 11: 9 o'clock Sunday night.
- 54:51Speaker 6: Well, here I am.
- 54:52Speaker 5: That's funny. I got a telegram, too.
- 54:55Speaker 6: Joe?
- 54:55Speaker 5: No, from the city hall. Something about my license not
- 54:59Speaker 5: being legal after tomorrow. Said a man would be here
- 55:02Speaker 5: to see me about 9 o'clock. Sounds awful phony.
- 55:06Speaker 6: Hmm, some amateur's trying to pull a fast one.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Sure, I just opened up. The license is good.
- 55:10Speaker 2: For a whole year.
- 55:11Speaker 15: Listen.
- 55:14Speaker 6: Somebody's having a good time.
- 55:16Speaker 5: Yeah. Moonlight picnic on the beach.
- 55:20Speaker 2: Remember?
- 55:21Speaker 6: We were going to do that one day.
- 55:23Speaker 5: Katie, do you think we could.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Hello, Eddie. Hot dog?
- 55:29Speaker 5: Sure, why not?
- 55:30Speaker 2: Katie?
- 55:30Speaker 6: I'll take a bite of yours.
- 55:32Speaker 5: With mustard back. That's it, thanks.
- 55:35Speaker 2: Thanks, Eddie. Get a hot dog. Open your mouth.
- 55:39Speaker 6: Mmm, delicious.
- 55:41Speaker 5: You got mustard all over.
- 55:43Speaker 6: I'll lick it off.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Mmm, good.
- 55:47Speaker 5: I know a better way to take mustard off.
- 55:49Speaker 6: You do?
- 55:49Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. This way. Oh, my.
- 55:54Speaker 6: That's a wonderful way, Eddie.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Look, how long do I have to stand here watching this?
- 55:58Speaker 6: Joe!
- 55:59Speaker 2: Hello, Joe. Hello, Eddie. How about that license?
- 56:02Speaker 5: Oh, so you sent the telegram. I might have known.
- 56:05Speaker 2: Sure, it expires tomorrow, your marriage license.
- 56:07Speaker 5: Oh, well, thanks for reminding me.
- 56:09Speaker 2: That license cost Eddie a dollar, Katie. Be ashamed to
- 56:12Speaker 2: see that buck wasted. Now, in case you two are interested,
- 56:15Speaker 2: there's a preacher waiting at my office.
- 56:17Speaker 6: The service always was pretty good at your cafe, Joe.
- 56:20Speaker 5: Well, Miss Farley, can you spare the time to get married?
- 56:22Speaker 6: Um, how long does a marriage take?
- 56:24Speaker 8: This one.
- 56:25Speaker 2: About 50 years, I hope.
- 56:27Speaker 6: I think I can just about make it.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Well, what are you waiting for?
- 56:31Speaker 6: Eddie, just a minute.
- 56:34Speaker 5: Now what?
- 56:35Speaker 6: Mustard. All over your face.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Before our stars return for their curtain calls, our producer
- 56:56Speaker 2: has an important message for the housewives in our audience.
- 57:00Speaker 3: I don't have to tell any housewife how important soap
- 57:02Speaker 3: is in running a household, large or small, or how
- 57:06Speaker 3: difficult it is to get all the soap you want
- 57:08Speaker 3: these days, especially those popular luxe flakes. But I do
- 57:12Speaker 3: want to emphasize the seriousness of the situation. Industries retooling
- 57:17Speaker 3: for peacetime production are consuming enormous quantities of fats and oils.
- 57:22Speaker 3: Unless large quantities of used fats from American kitchens are
- 57:26Speaker 3: turned in during the coming months, our oil supplies will
- 57:29Speaker 3: be so drained you may lose as much as a
- 57:32Speaker 3: month's supply of soap, and that would be serious. If
- 57:36Speaker 3: you're already saving used fats, get your neighbor started again. Otherwise,
- 57:40Speaker 3: her indifference may cause you to lose precious soap.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Thank you, Mr. Keeley. In our house, we keep a
- 57:46Speaker 2: tin can right on the stove, so it's handy for
- 57:48Speaker 2: pouring in grease from the frying pan or broiler. It's
- 57:52Speaker 2: surprising how fast a can fills up. Remember, ladies, you
- 57:55Speaker 2: get four cents for every pound you turn in and
- 57:58Speaker 2: keep the soap you want in supply. Back to William
- 58:02Speaker 2: Keeley and our stars.
- 58:04Speaker 3: The only thing that could outshine Coney Island are the
- 58:07Speaker 3: stars who presented tonight's play so engagingly. And here they
- 58:11Speaker 3: are for a curtain call. Betty Grable, Victor Mature, and
- 58:14Speaker 3: Barry Sullivan.
- 58:15Speaker 6: Thank you, Bill. And incidentally, welcome to our home studio.
- 58:18Speaker 5: Yes, I hear you're under contract out of 20th Century Fox.
- 58:21Speaker 5: That's right.
- 58:22Speaker 3: And I'm sure it's going to be a most enjoyable association.
- 58:25Speaker 2: If you work at Fox, you'll have to have a hobby, Mr. Keeley.
- 58:27Speaker 3: How's that, Barry?
- 58:28Speaker 2: Well, everyone seems to have one. Vic has a sailboat.
- 58:30Speaker 2: Betty has her horses. That's right.
- 58:32Speaker 3: I understand you have the finest racing stables in the valley, Betty.
- 58:36Speaker 5: Grable stables, hey.
- 58:37Speaker 2: You know.
- 58:43Speaker 8: Don't all those horses take a lot of stall space, Betty?
- 58:46Speaker 6: Oh, no. Horses can sleep standing up, you know.
- 58:49Speaker 2: I know.
- 58:49Speaker 5: They do it every time I put a bet on one.
- 58:53Speaker 2: Well, it changed.
- 58:54Speaker 3: Perhaps you ought to let Vic take you sailing, Betty.
- 58:56Speaker 6: I'm afraid I don't know a thing about it, Bill.
- 58:58Speaker 5: Well, certainly you know the difference between starboard and port.
- 59:02Speaker 6: Yes, port's a little sweeter.
- 59:05Speaker 2: You know, I never could understand why they always call
- 59:08Speaker 2: the boat a she.
- 59:09Speaker 9: Try.
- 59:10Speaker 5: Steering one sometime. You will understand.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Barry, I hear you're going to ballplay. Oh, that's right, Mr. Keely.
- 59:16Speaker 2: A group of us play every weekend. Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra.
- 59:19Speaker 6: You mean Frank Sinatra can swing a bat?
- 59:21Speaker 2: Well, sometimes it's the other way around.
- 59:27Speaker 6: While we're at it, what's your favorite pastime, Bill?
- 59:29Speaker 3: Well, I think I'd settle for watching Betty Gravel in
- 59:32Speaker 3: her forthcoming Technicolor picture, The Shocking Miss Pilgrim, or seeing
- 59:36Speaker 3: Victor Mature in his soon-to-be-released Fox film, My Darling Clementine.
- 59:41Speaker 6: Speaking of movies, Bill, what are you going to bring
- 59:43Speaker 6: to your audience next week?
- 59:45Speaker 3: Well, for drama and suspense, we'd have a hard time
- 59:48Speaker 3: picking a more enthralling play than Dragonwick, with its original
- 59:53Speaker 3: great stars, Gene Tierney and Vincent Price. This recent 20th
- 59:59Speaker 3: Century Fox hit is the story of three people in
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: the shadow of a growing madness. A wife who fights
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: the domination of her husband, and a man who tries
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: to guard her with his love.
- 1:00:10Speaker 6: I'm sure your audience won't want to miss it, Bill.
- 1:00:12Speaker 6: Good night.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: Good night, and.
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Thanks for a most entertaining time at Tony Island. Thank you.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: Our sponsors, the makers of Lux Lakes, join me in
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: inviting you to be with us again next Monday evening
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: when the Lux Radio Theater presents Gene Tierney and Vincent
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: Price in Dragonwick. This is William Keeley saying goodnight to
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: you from Hollywood.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Barry Sullivan will soon be seen in the Columbia picture,
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: They Walk Alone. Heard in our cast tonight were Eddie
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: Marr as Frankie, Leo Cleary as Finnegan. Our music was
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: directed by Louis Silvers. Also heard in our cast were
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: Herbert Rawlinson, June Perret, Cliff Clark, Stanley Farrar, Dick Ryan,
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Charles Seal, Truda Marson, and Dora Singleton. This is your announcer,
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: John Milton Kennedy, reminding you to tune in again next
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: Monday night to hear Dragonwick with Gene Tierney and Vincent Price.
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: Lux Radio Theater's Coney Island now takes its curtain call.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Follow Lux Radio Theater for more classic broadcasts.
