- 0:02Happy Monday morning, everybody. It's about seven O 5 and I'm
- 0:10going to meet Charlie Marlowe and Kenny Schrader at 9 O clock
- 0:15and we're going to start testing for the new Kenny and Kenny
- 0:19podcast show. They tell me that this one's not
- 0:22going to this is not a real one that we that we're going to
- 0:26start testing. I said, well, we're going to act
- 0:27like it's real because I made all the notes and I prepped and
- 0:31I prepared. OK.
- 0:34So Julie, she Julie asked me on social media last night.
- 0:42She said, Kenny, here's the question.
- 0:46She said, did the Charters what what caused the sport of NASCAR
- 0:53to get so out of control? That that's a great question.
- 0:57And I don't think we've ever talked about this.
- 1:00We always just talk talk about everything getting expensive.
- 1:06So Julie, the charter system was put in place to make sure that
- 1:15each car owner had something of value.
- 1:20What we were witnessing was great team owners like the
- 1:25legendary Bud Moore, Junior Johnson, some of these great car
- 1:33owners, you could even say Richard Petty, Petty Enterprise,
- 1:37but now he's part of the legacy. But a lot of a lot of these car
- 1:42owners, they owned a NASCAR race team their whole lives.
- 1:47And at the very end, it was very sad that all they had, really,
- 1:51all they really had at the very end of their lives was what we
- 1:56call brick and mortar. They had a building to sell and
- 2:00some welders and, you know, fabrication equipment.
- 2:04That's all they had after a lifetime in NASCAR.
- 2:09And it became very sad. So behind the scenes it was
- 2:16talked about, how are we going to make it to where the owners
- 2:19have something, what that's worthy?
- 2:23You see all these baseball teams, these football teams, the
- 2:26hockey teams, these owners, they own the Dallas Cowboys, you
- 2:34know, the Washington Commanders or whatever you call them
- 2:39nowadays, They own these teams and they're worth something.
- 2:45And if the owner ever wants to sell them, you get money.
- 2:49Well, so NASCAR said, OK, let's create this charter system to
- 2:56where if the owner wants to get out of the sport, he has a team
- 3:01to sell, not just a building and some welders and some
- 3:06fabrication equipment. Now addressing, I think that
- 3:11addresses the charter system specifically.
- 3:15That's what the charter system does.
- 3:16It gives the owner something that is worth money.
- 3:20If you have a team, it's worth money and you can sell it.
- 3:23And we've watched it happen. The teams, the charter systems
- 3:27are going for like say $40 million.
- 3:31Well, not the team, just the charter.
- 3:35And now the owner can still sell his building and, and you know,
- 3:39equipment. So if the owner wants to get
- 3:41out, he can sell his charter, which is a starting spot in the
- 3:46Daytona 500, and he can also sell his building.
- 3:50That's one. Now #2 why do the teams have to
- 3:59have all these different sponsors now?
- 4:02There was a day where you just had one sponsor, Miller Genuine,
- 4:06Draft, STP, Hardee's, Budweiser, FedEx.
- 4:15Now these big sponsors can only afford like 12 races.
- 4:20Even FedEx. FedEx was the last sponsor that
- 4:24was a big sponsor that sponsored Denny Hamlin the full year.
- 4:28Now they're only there's talk that they're getting out of the
- 4:31sport and that maybe they'll only be able to sponsor 8 to 12
- 4:36races. Why?
- 4:37Why didn't NASCAR get so expensive?
- 4:40Here's your reason. I witnessed it myself.
- 4:44I know what I'm talking about. I went to Penske Racing.
- 4:48Here's what happened. They were making these cars very
- 4:52light, very efficient to where they were only good for one
- 4:56race. Yes, one race.
- 4:59They would make the body so light that if they barely bumped
- 5:02into each other or, you know, they just, the bodies became
- 5:07very weak. Listen to this crazy story that
- 5:10I witnessed when I went to my brother Rusty's Penske Racing.
- 5:15There I said it by brother Rusty Herman.
- 5:19I used to get so mad at you when you would say my brother Rusty.
- 5:24But you know, Rusty and Rodger Penske they were.
- 5:29Rusty was part owner, Rusty Wallace and Don Miller.
- 5:34Of course, Rodger owned the biggest percentage.
- 5:37So I was allowed to go in. They cleared me to go in Penske
- 5:41Racing just two years ago when Rusty was gone.
- 5:45So two years ago I go to Penske and they showed me everything
- 5:50and I thought, my God, I'm going to leave this shop and I'm going
- 5:52to go straight to Mike Hilton and tell me what a piss poor job
- 5:56they did. They let this sport get out of
- 5:58hand. Listen to this.
- 6:00They would build a car, they would run one race 1, and it
- 6:06would come back to the shop on Sunday night, Monday morning.
- 6:11And in three hours the car was completely torn apart and the
- 6:15body was taken completely off of it.
- 6:18And they had to start over. And at times they were running
- 6:21one car per race because NASCAR's tolerance level, their
- 6:27inspection process was so tight, they were loose using lasers to
- 6:32measure and that after one race, the car was already done.
- 6:37It couldn't it it would not go through tech inspection.
- 6:41So the sport got out of hand because Joe Gibbs started this
- 6:45process where he would run one car race or one body race.
- 6:50Maybe the framing cage kept going.
- 6:53But in the Timmy told me they would start like at 8:00 or 8:30
- 6:58and by like they had it down to like 10 or 11:00 that their car
- 7:04that they just got done racing on Sunday was completely ripped
- 7:07apart and down to bare bones. The cost of of they didn't, they
- 7:15weren't running lead anymore. They were running tungsten.
- 7:18Tungsten is a is a weight weighs the car down that it's 10 times
- 7:24more expensive than lead. Just expenses inflation.
- 7:31What we're going through right now, the cost of metal running
- 7:35more races, engineers, the cost of engineers.
- 7:41So the sport spiraled out of control because of the cost to
- 7:47go faster. Engineers running one car per
- 7:51race, team airplanes, jet setting across America.
- 7:57And here's the reason it got out of control.
- 8:00And we're going to end like this because sponsors could not keep
- 8:07up. The sport got so expensive that
- 8:10you cannot find a sponsor to keep up with the cost.
- 8:14So instead of 1 sponsor per year, as you see right now, most
- 8:18teams have got 6 to 8 sponsors. So Julie, hopefully I answered
- 8:23your question. All right, I'm getting in the
- 8:26shower and go to meet Charlie Marlow and Kenny Schrader at
- 8:309:00. And I believe some of these
- 8:33things that we do today you're going to see out and about.
- 8:37And there we're going to start promoting the Kenny and Kenny
- 8:40Show or whatever they call it. Have a great Monday, everybody.
