- 0:02Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:06Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Blazarre and Lazarre. Hello, everybody nailed it Joined as always,
- 0:12Speaker 2: buy our bar gap gafit match.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bar I.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Really want to drink the kool Aid with this team
- 0:21Speaker 2: right now because I am excited. I have the glass
- 0:25Speaker 2: of kool Aid is on the table right like I
- 0:27Speaker 2: poured it. It's on the table, it's right there. I'm
- 0:30Speaker 2: like about to pick it up and drink it. What's
- 0:32Speaker 2: your favorite kool Aid? Do you have a favorite one?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Oh?
- 0:34Speaker 1: Man, I just the lemonade?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, say lemonade? Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I haven't had kool Aid and long? But does that
- 0:40Speaker 1: used to be a summer staple. Maybe I'll bring that
- 0:42Speaker 1: back to this.
- 0:45Speaker 2: You're gonna bring kool Aid back.
- 0:46Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 0:47Speaker 1: You know how much sugar's in there.
- 0:48Speaker 2: There's a lot of sugar and kool Aid. Hello, everybody,
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's Evan Lazar Alex Barth. Patriots Catch twenty two, really
- 0:56Speaker 2: big off season Catch twenty two. We're in the in
- 0:59Speaker 2: the doul drums right word right, everybody gets on me
- 1:01Speaker 2: about my words doldrums of the off season right now,
- 1:05Speaker 2: So we're gonna talk Patriots football though, or we still
- 1:09Speaker 2: got plenty to talk about. We're gonna do a little
- 1:11Speaker 2: roster projection talk and we'll take your calls and we'll
- 1:14Speaker 2: take your emails. But before we get rolling here on
- 1:18Speaker 2: all of that, I wasn't one hundred percent sure that
- 1:21Speaker 2: you were gonna have time, Alex for this podcast anymore,
- 1:24Speaker 2: because you have expanded your podcast repertoire and now you
- 1:28Speaker 2: are just on seventeen different podcasts, So you are going
- 1:33Speaker 2: to make time for Catch twenty two. All right, there,
- 1:35Speaker 2: there's gonna still be a podcast here.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Yes, I am your referring to. David Andrews is coming
- 1:40Speaker 1: over doing some stuff with Sports Up. We're super excited.
- 1:43Speaker 1: He's going to be on Azolak and Bertrand during football
- 1:45Speaker 1: season once a week, I believe is the plan. And
- 1:49Speaker 1: then me and him are going to do something that
- 1:51Speaker 1: kind of ties into that, and exactly what that is
- 1:54Speaker 1: we're still kind of figuring out. But there will be
- 1:57Speaker 1: sort of something with me and David Andrews. So update
- 1:59Speaker 1: your Alex Podcast co host power rankings.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I'm still number one. I'm number one.
- 2:04Speaker 1: What the people decide, David Andrews.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Is number two because he's a super Bowl champion, so
- 2:08Speaker 2: obviously he's ahead of everybody else, but I'm still number one.
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'll let the people decide.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well. I would also just say about all of this
- 2:15Speaker 2: that and I love David Andrews, but as soon as
- 2:20Speaker 2: players retire, they immediately come to the dark side. They
- 2:23Speaker 2: immediately come to the media, and now all of a sudden,
- 2:26Speaker 2: everybody wants to be in the media. During their careers,
- 2:29Speaker 2: David was great, not all of them. David Andrews was fantastic.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I think there's a guy probably sitting in an office
- 2:34Speaker 1: over that way that didn't do that.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Maybe, but there's there's all I'm saying is is that
- 2:42Speaker 2: there's a lot of guys that are, you know, not
- 2:45Speaker 2: David Andrews. Andrews was great, but there are a lot
- 2:47Speaker 2: of guys that weren't great with the media, and then
- 2:49Speaker 2: all of a sudden they retire and now they're in
- 2:52Speaker 2: the media because guess what, it's fun. It's a fun
- 2:54Speaker 2: way to make some money, no doubt about it. It's
- 2:57Speaker 2: not a real job, we know that. But I'm glad
- 2:59Speaker 2: that you're still gonna make time for this show. And
- 3:01Speaker 2: that's pretty cool with David Andrews. Your name was even
- 3:04Speaker 2: in the press release, Yes, along with David Andrews. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: Zoe and Beatle were in there. And he's gonna be
- 3:10Speaker 2: on that show.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And that's the only reason I like specified it, Like
- 3:13Speaker 1: him being on Zola can Bertrain once a week and
- 3:14Speaker 1: he'll do some stuff on the pregame, Like that's the
- 3:18Speaker 1: cool part. Yeah, and then he's just doing something with me.
- 3:21Speaker 1: I don't know how they talked him into that, but
- 3:23Speaker 1: I don't even know that was going to be in
- 3:24Speaker 1: the press release.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Well that's the other thing that I thought was funny
- 3:27Speaker 2: about this is that you knew but you didn't like
- 3:30Speaker 2: have like a conversation with David about this ahead of time. So, like,
- 3:34Speaker 2: how did they talk David Andrews into doing a podcast
- 3:37Speaker 2: with like you? And I would say the same thing
- 3:39Speaker 2: about me if it was me, Like.
- 3:40Speaker 1: We've got good people over there, we got you got
- 3:43Speaker 1: good people. I got to brush up, but like I
- 3:45Speaker 1: lean on you for a lot of the offensive line stuff,
- 3:47Speaker 1: So I got to brush up on that you do
- 3:48Speaker 1: because I can't. I can't come into that.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Well he can teach you.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I'm not looking prepared. It's honestly, kind of what I'm
- 3:53Speaker 1: hoping it is is just picking his brain on what's
- 3:58Speaker 1: going on with the team, but kind of the football
- 3:59Speaker 1: stuff in general. I think what will be cool about
- 4:02Speaker 1: doing it this year is I think this year, you know,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and some of this goes back to last year, but
- 4:07Speaker 1: this year as much as any other, I think fans
- 4:09Speaker 1: are legitimately generally going to care about what's happening on
- 4:12Speaker 1: the offensive line. Yeah, fourth overall, pick on an offensive linement.
- 4:14Speaker 1: It was such a big issue last year. So getting
- 4:17Speaker 1: to talk to an offensive lineman every week about what's
- 4:19Speaker 1: going on with that, I think will be a really
- 4:21Speaker 1: cool opportunity.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, and it will be cool because he played in
- 4:25Speaker 2: this system under Josh McDaniels for years and years, so
- 4:28Speaker 2: he's gonna know all the calls, he's gonna know all
- 4:30Speaker 2: the schemes that they're running up front, he's gonna know
- 4:32Speaker 2: all the protection numbers and all that fancy stuff. So
- 4:35Speaker 2: that's really cool. But again, I'm just I'm really glad
- 4:39Speaker 2: that you're still gonna do this show. And how many
- 4:41Speaker 2: podcasts do you have now that are Patriot centric podcast It's.
- 4:45Speaker 1: We're Patriots centric.
- 4:46Speaker 2: We're going on double digits at this point. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:50Speaker 2: this is what.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I thought four or five.
- 4:54Speaker 2: No, it's more than that. It's more No, I think.
- 4:56Speaker 1: It's about that. There might be a few more things
- 4:58Speaker 1: in the works too.
- 4:59Speaker 2: So okay, wow, what a tease. Well, he's gonna leave
- 5:02Speaker 2: us behind, that's for sure, all right. Anyways, So what
- 5:06Speaker 2: we're gonna do from a serious standpoint on the show
- 5:08Speaker 2: today is we are going to do a fifty three
- 5:12Speaker 2: man roster projection. You published a fifty three man roster projection.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I kind of have a half baked one over here
- 5:18Speaker 2: in my notes. So we're going to talk about yours,
- 5:21Speaker 2: talk about where I would maybe differ from you, if
- 5:24Speaker 2: not the same. And then also we're going to do
- 5:27Speaker 2: that on the offense this week, and then we'll stretch
- 5:30Speaker 2: it out do the defense next week and special teams.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Don't forget about special teams next week. So let's get
- 5:35Speaker 2: into it. Let's start with the offense. Yeah, and you know,
- 5:39Speaker 2: there's a lot of burning questions that I have that
- 5:41Speaker 2: kind of our subcategories to the roster projection itself that
- 5:46Speaker 2: we can get into here at every.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Position, like the depth chart.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so this is kind of like a roster projection
- 5:52Speaker 2: slash roster reset, which we've done in the past as well,
- 5:55Speaker 2: but we'll use the projection to kind of as a
- 5:58Speaker 2: springboard here for the rest of it, and just starting
- 6:01Speaker 2: at quarterback. I don't really feel that there's any doubt
- 6:07Speaker 2: in my mind right now that it's gonna be Drake
- 6:09Speaker 2: May and Josh Dobbs as the quarterbacks. We've talked about
- 6:13Speaker 2: this in the past though, about the emergency third quarterback
- 6:16Speaker 2: rule and is it worth carrying it or not carrying
- 6:20Speaker 2: a third quarterback, But right now I have May and
- 6:22Speaker 2: Dobbs because if Woolridge is going to make a push
- 6:26Speaker 2: to make the roster, then he's gonna have to really
- 6:29Speaker 2: make a push to make the roster. Yeah, and I
- 6:31Speaker 2: don't think we've seen enough to determine that. Or there's
- 6:35Speaker 2: always the possibility that they sign somebody at the end
- 6:39Speaker 2: of the summer that's a veteran that gets cut from
- 6:41Speaker 2: another team, and maybe they claim somebody on waivers for example,
- 6:44Speaker 2: or something like that.
- 6:45Speaker 1: There's a two horse race for the MVP in the
- 6:47Speaker 1: UFL between a couple quarterbacks this year. Yeah, you remember
- 6:50Speaker 1: Jordan Toms.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say what Florida State, right no Ole,
- 6:55Speaker 2: miss Ole, miss Why did I think Florida State?
- 6:59Speaker 1: I don't know, Okay, but it was Jordan Tamud. You
- 7:02Speaker 1: don't remember Bryce Perkins. I think that all of them
- 7:04Speaker 1: wouldn't have been really on our draft radar a little bit.
- 7:07Speaker 1: I know the name, but neither neither one of those
- 7:09Speaker 1: guys are really McDaniel's fit, So I don't know that
- 7:10Speaker 1: it would be them. I just wanted to throw that
- 7:12Speaker 1: out there. But yeah, I just said the two. Look,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I believed they changed to the rule. It's so complicated
- 7:19Speaker 1: hard to find this. Yeah, so you can't name a
- 7:24Speaker 1: quarterback on your practice squad the emergency third quarterback, but
- 7:28Speaker 1: if you make him one of your two game day elevations,
- 7:30Speaker 1: then you can, I believe is how the rule is written. Now,
- 7:34Speaker 1: don't quote me on that. Yeah, they're gonna have three
- 7:38Speaker 1: quarterbacks in the building, right, you know, whether or not
- 7:42Speaker 1: that third is on the roster on the practice squad
- 7:44Speaker 1: is kind of what we're talking about here. It just
- 7:47Speaker 1: didn't seem in the spring. I don't think Ben Wilwrids
- 7:50Speaker 1: necessarily did anything that was wrong. He just really didn't
- 7:53Speaker 1: get a lot of reps. I mean, it was May
- 7:55Speaker 1: and between May and Dobbs, and May got the heavy
- 7:58Speaker 1: percentage between those two, but if you combine those two,
- 8:00Speaker 1: they probably got what ninety percent of the team reps.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Eighty ninety percent of the team reps. They didn't really
- 8:05Speaker 1: work role Ridge in a ton, So he to your point, like,
- 8:09Speaker 1: if he's gonna make a push with the fifty three
- 8:11Speaker 1: man roster, he simply needs more opportunities there, enough time
- 8:14Speaker 1: there to prove that. I think he can stick around
- 8:17Speaker 1: on the practice squad. I love watching the way we've
- 8:19Speaker 1: talked about this. I love watching the way he goes
- 8:21Speaker 1: about practice. I think he does a good job of
- 8:24Speaker 1: maximizing the reps that he getsh But just as it
- 8:27Speaker 1: stands right now, where they're at with other positions, it's
- 8:30Speaker 1: hard to justify keeping him on the fifty three when
- 8:32Speaker 1: you can get him to the practice squad. And you know,
- 8:34Speaker 1: let's say, you know, it's a seventeen game season, Drake's
- 8:37Speaker 1: gonna tweak something at some point. Okay, he's playing, but
- 8:40Speaker 1: we'd like a little more depth. Will you promote Woolridge
- 8:43Speaker 1: that week? I guess you get out right promote him.
- 8:45Speaker 1: You don't need to make him the emergency. So I
- 8:47Speaker 1: look that doesn't take a roster.
- 8:49Speaker 2: That rule about elevating them the practice squad was vetoed
- 8:53Speaker 2: in the last go around of trying to pass that rule,
- 8:56Speaker 2: so they still need to be on the fifty.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Thh so they can't be in elevation correct. So okay,
- 8:59Speaker 1: So maybe that it was a real proposal that had
- 9:02Speaker 1: some steam, So maybe that helps his case a little bit.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But again, it just you know, you make something work
- 9:10Speaker 1: that week where maybe you cut somebody and you sign
- 9:12Speaker 1: him and then you move them back. We've seen them
- 9:14Speaker 1: do that with guys. So yeah, as of right now
- 9:17Speaker 1: outside looking in, I'm not ruling out them him making
- 9:20Speaker 1: the team, just because I'm not ruling out them keeping
- 9:22Speaker 1: a third quarterback period because of that rule. They bring
- 9:25Speaker 1: in somebody else before during camp, then that becomes a competition.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I don't think it would definitively be him, but I
- 9:31Speaker 1: just have him at two right now.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I just feel like this is no disrespect to Ben Woolridge,
- 9:37Speaker 2: but in order to carry three quarterbacks, it has to
- 9:40Speaker 2: be a pretty unique situation similar I guess really the
- 9:44Speaker 2: only situation I can come up with is last year
- 9:47Speaker 2: where you have the veteran bridge quarterback, the Josh Dobbs,
- 9:50Speaker 2: highly drafted rookie, late draft pick, rookie who has him
- 9:53Speaker 2: upside like Joe Milton.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Joe Milton is also just a better just better for
- 9:58Speaker 1: Joe Milton. I don't know every team's third quarterback. I
- 10:00Speaker 1: feel comfortable in saying Joe Milton was the best third
- 10:02Speaker 1: quarterback in football last year.
- 10:04Speaker 2: It's possible.
- 10:04Speaker 1: It's hard to imagine he wasn't.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's a very unique set of circumstances where
- 10:10Speaker 2: you're in this quarterback transition and you have two young
- 10:13Speaker 2: qbs that you just drafted and you want to keep
- 10:15Speaker 2: both of them around. That scenario does not apply to
- 10:18Speaker 2: Ben Woolrich. So the only other way that I could
- 10:21Speaker 2: see this going that they carry three quarterbacks as of today,
- 10:25Speaker 2: as of June eighteenth, is if that quarterback is not
- 10:29Speaker 2: currently here, Like if that third quarterback is somebody that
- 10:33Speaker 2: they just happen to really like that hits waivers and
- 10:36Speaker 2: they claim that player on waivers or he goes unsigned
- 10:39Speaker 2: through waivers, and then you know, they sign him to
- 10:42Speaker 2: the roster after roster cutdowns. We'll see. But Woolridge, yeah,
- 10:47Speaker 2: he's gonna have to earn that spot. So right now,
- 10:49Speaker 2: we're both kind of in the same boat Drake May
- 10:51Speaker 2: and Josh Dobbs at quarterback. Running back is where I
- 10:55Speaker 2: feel like it gets really interesting in a couple of ways.
- 10:59Speaker 2: So Ramandra Stevenson and Travon Henderson are locks, They're both
- 11:04Speaker 2: going to be here. I believe Antonio Gibson's pretty close
- 11:08Speaker 2: to being in that category. Yeah, So I have those
- 11:12Speaker 2: three guys on as of right now. And it's similar
- 11:15Speaker 2: to what I was saying to Woolridge, But I think
- 11:16Speaker 2: he had a better spring than Woolridge did. Willane Larrison
- 11:20Speaker 2: started hot started, had a really good rookie Mini Camp
- 11:23Speaker 2: had a really good spring at the beginning in OTAs.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Didn't hear from him as much as the spring war on.
- 11:29Speaker 2: So similar to Chisholm, but I think maybe Chisholm's a
- 11:32Speaker 2: little bit ahead. Larison's going to have to show us
- 11:35Speaker 2: a little bit more, I believe to fully make this
- 11:38Speaker 2: team for me to feel really good about putting him
- 11:41Speaker 2: on the team. But that's question number one. Is it
- 11:44Speaker 2: three running backs? Is it four running backs? Is a
- 11:47Speaker 2: big question mark here as well. And then I also
- 11:49Speaker 2: think there's a secondary question of our Travon Henderson and
- 11:53Speaker 2: Antonio Gibson two redundant that you don't need to keep
- 11:56Speaker 2: bold but three or four running backs to start? Where
- 11:59Speaker 2: are you at there?
- 12:00Speaker 1: So I'm at four. Look, I try to do this
- 12:02Speaker 1: as much as if they had to make a decision today. Yeah,
- 12:06Speaker 1: because I don't want to project. You know, camp who
- 12:09Speaker 1: knows this was one where I made a little bit
- 12:12Speaker 1: of a projection. I have four running backs. On to
- 12:15Speaker 1: your point about we need to see more from Larison,
- 12:17Speaker 1: we really didn't see a ton of special teams work
- 12:20Speaker 1: this spring, and I think that's probably where he's going
- 12:23Speaker 1: to create his roster spot. He can factor in as
- 12:26Speaker 1: a running back, and I think he'd play a little
- 12:27Speaker 1: bit of offense if he's on the team. But we've
- 12:29Speaker 1: thrown out the Rex Burkhead Brandon Bolden comparisons, right, And
- 12:33Speaker 1: that's the difference between him and Gibson. You asked about
- 12:35Speaker 1: Gibson and Henderson being redundant. Are Gibson and Larison redundant?
- 12:39Speaker 1: I think there's some redundancy there, but I just I
- 12:41Speaker 1: love Larison's makeup for a special teams role. Yeah, so
- 12:44Speaker 1: I think he gets it and they don't have a
- 12:46Speaker 1: ton of guys that projects like those core special teamers
- 12:49Speaker 1: at least, and we think are going to make the
- 12:50Speaker 1: roster right this ille Brendon schooler. But I think he
- 12:53Speaker 1: gives them a body on special teams. He can play
- 12:56Speaker 1: both the early down and passing down back roles, so
- 12:58Speaker 1: he gives you a lot of versatility at a position
- 13:00Speaker 1: where injuries generally pile up. And I know people have
- 13:05Speaker 1: cited Mike Rabel generally only keeps three running backs. Josh
- 13:08Speaker 1: McDaniels generally keeps four. So it'll be interesting to see.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Is that's something McDaniels goes to Rabel and was like,
- 13:13Speaker 1: to run my offense the way I want, I need
- 13:15Speaker 1: four guys. I know you want three, but I need four.
- 13:17Speaker 1: And maybe he says you take a guy from here,
- 13:19Speaker 1: you take a guy from there, whatever, But I mean,
- 13:21Speaker 1: that's just such a McDaniel's room. If you keep all four.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Stevenson's your early down guy, Henderson's you're passing down guy,
- 13:28Speaker 1: and then you have essentially two guys that can play
- 13:30Speaker 1: both spots in Gibson and Larison, with one of those
- 13:33Speaker 1: probably being more of a core special teamer. Were actually,
- 13:36Speaker 1: before I say this, I don't know that this was
- 13:38Speaker 1: ever the room was the room ever at one point
- 13:41Speaker 1: Bolden White, not Bolden or Bolden, but blunt White, Burkhead, Bolden.
- 13:50Speaker 2: I believe it was Blunt White, Dion Lewis Bolden at
- 13:55Speaker 2: one point, maybe twenty thirteen through sixteen, Patriots like somewhere.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Around there that works too.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I don't know if if Burkehead was in that mix.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I just I feel like with my question, I guess
- 14:13Speaker 2: in terms of how many they'll keep, I currently feel
- 14:16Speaker 2: comfortable putting three guys on Stevens.
- 14:19Speaker 1: In seventeen, sorry, in seventeen. Their Week one roster was
- 14:25Speaker 1: Gillis Lee, who was the power back, and he got hurt.
- 14:28Speaker 2: He got a bunch of touchdowns there, Gillous.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Lee, White, Burkehead, Bolden, and they had Dion Lewis. They
- 14:33Speaker 1: kept five running backs Week one twenty twenty seven.
- 14:36Speaker 2: They kept a lot of running backs towards the end
- 14:38Speaker 2: of their.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Final roster Head, Oh no, that's also five.
- 14:41Speaker 2: It's they They had a lot of running backs towards
- 14:43Speaker 2: the end of the bill because of the Stephen Jackson year.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I don't think he ever wanted to go back down
- 14:48Speaker 2: that road. And if you remember the it was at
- 14:51Speaker 2: eighteen that quarter of Patterson had to play some running
- 14:53Speaker 2: back because then they ran out of running backs, so
- 14:56Speaker 2: he was very Bill was very wary of running out
- 14:58Speaker 2: of running.
- 14:59Speaker 1: But all the more reason, I think Josh goes there
- 15:00Speaker 1: and says, like Stevenson struggled to stay healthy, Henderson struggled
- 15:04Speaker 1: to stay healthy at Ohio State. That was kind of
- 15:06Speaker 1: the one big knock on him was the durability. All
- 15:08Speaker 1: the more reason to keep four guys, Like, there's a
- 15:10Speaker 1: really strong case. I get Vrabel usually keeps three. You
- 15:16Speaker 1: can use that trend sort of, but also you've got
- 15:18Speaker 1: it he hit Derrick Henry. That sort of skews things.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Whereas Derrick Henry's a tank. They don't have Derrick Henry
- 15:24Speaker 1: on this roster. I like the running backs they have,
- 15:26Speaker 1: they don't have Derrick Henry. This group I think speaks
- 15:31Speaker 1: more towards keeping four guys.
- 15:32Speaker 2: So the other question, which I think is definitely related
- 15:36Speaker 2: to the number of running backs that they're going to keep,
- 15:38Speaker 2: is Ramandre is very clearly his own thing. He has
- 15:42Speaker 2: his own skill set, early down, power back type of
- 15:45Speaker 2: skill set ideally, and you can see that. Then you
- 15:48Speaker 2: get into the Henderson, Larrison, Gibson category and there's a
- 15:54Speaker 2: lot of crossover there. And there's always two roles that
- 15:57Speaker 2: we talk about with the early down and the past
- 16:00Speaker 2: game back, but there's also that which we've talked about
- 16:03Speaker 2: in the past is kind of like that Burkhead thing
- 16:05Speaker 2: of the the sub package back, right or the the Yeah, really,
- 16:10Speaker 2: the sub package back is the best way to put
- 16:12Speaker 2: it where it's not solely just a passing game role,
- 16:16Speaker 2: but it's eleven personnel shotgun formation defenses in nickel or dime,
- 16:22Speaker 2: and you're not early down under center offense. It's not
- 16:26Speaker 2: your base offense. It's a sub package offense. And Mike
- 16:31Speaker 2: like wondering, like my question there is is there a
- 16:35Speaker 2: world where Traveon Henderson is just so darn good that
- 16:37Speaker 2: he's both that he is the sub package back and
- 16:40Speaker 2: he's the pass game back.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I also saw them run a lot of Pony this spring, so.
- 16:44Speaker 2: That cort but I when I look at Pony, like
- 16:47Speaker 2: Remondra and Henderson, they fit so well together, Like that's
- 16:51Speaker 2: part of the the appeal of drafting Henderson.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Are there going to be times where they want Henderson
- 16:56Speaker 1: and Gibson or Henderson and Larson like we would see
- 17:00Speaker 1: go Pony with James White and Rex Burkhead. So I
- 17:03Speaker 1: have not in the day, right.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And I'm sure they would. But then it stands the
- 17:08Speaker 2: question that comes up with that is, then is it
- 17:12Speaker 2: Gibson or Laris? Like do you need all three of
- 17:15Speaker 2: those guys? When all three of those guys are probably
- 17:18Speaker 2: gonna play very similar roles and like there's not gonna
- 17:22Speaker 2: be enough snaps to go around for all of them.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I guess, do you need all three of those guys
- 17:25Speaker 1: in any given game? Probably not. Will you end up
- 17:29Speaker 1: needing those three guys over the course of the seventeen
- 17:31Speaker 1: game season, Yes, I think so. Like Land Larison might
- 17:34Speaker 1: make the team and be a healthy scratch some wings, right,
- 17:36Speaker 1: But I still think he's a guy that you keep
- 17:38Speaker 1: around because there are gonna be weeks that you do
- 17:41Speaker 1: you do need them.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Okay, you're selling me. I don't want to move on
- 17:45Speaker 2: from Gibson. I don't either, And maybe this is just
- 17:48Speaker 2: a nerd in me, but a lot of the metrics
- 17:50Speaker 2: last year are really good for him, you know, yards
- 17:52Speaker 2: after contact, things like that he was a better running
- 17:55Speaker 2: back last year than Ramondre Stevenson.
- 17:57Speaker 1: That they should have played him was, that's just a fact.
- 18:00Speaker 2: One of their biggest He was a better more efficient,
- 18:02Speaker 2: more productive runner than Remondre was last year. And as
- 18:06Speaker 2: much as I'm excited about Trevon Henderson, We're all excited
- 18:09Speaker 2: about Trevion Henderson. You don't want to to say, you know,
- 18:13Speaker 2: use what they said last of this offseason, Li Wolf
- 18:17Speaker 2: said about Jalen Polk. You don't want a Jalen Polk
- 18:19Speaker 2: Travon Henderson where it's like all on Travon Henderson to
- 18:22Speaker 2: do it all in the backfield. I know I'll have Remandre,
- 18:25Speaker 2: but you know what I mean in terms of that
- 18:26Speaker 2: kind of role and those types of situations, because I
- 18:30Speaker 2: definitely think that there's a world where Traveon Henderson might
- 18:35Speaker 2: not have more touches than ramondre Stevenson by the end
- 18:38Speaker 2: of the season, but he might have more snaps than
- 18:40Speaker 2: vermondre Stevenson by the end of the season, and that
- 18:43Speaker 2: that could be a lot for a rookie out of
- 18:45Speaker 2: the gates. So I'm still hanging on to Gibson because
- 18:48Speaker 2: of that. So right now I'm at Remandre, Gibson, Henderson,
- 18:53Speaker 2: and I have Larison squarely on the bubble. Like I
- 18:55Speaker 2: think Larison's trending towards making the team, but I'm not
- 18:59Speaker 2: fully putting him.
- 19:00Speaker 1: On the bubble. Don't get me wrong, but I have
- 19:02Speaker 1: him on all right.
- 19:03Speaker 2: H Why let's let's skip over wide receiver because it's
- 19:07Speaker 2: it's such an interesting topics. We're going to come back
- 19:10Speaker 2: to it. I'm gonna go to tight ends in full
- 19:12Speaker 2: backs first, so I group them together because they practice,
- 19:17Speaker 2: they practice together. They're not A full back is not
- 19:21Speaker 2: a running back. He's with the tight ends usually, so
- 19:23Speaker 2: right now.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Long snapper is not a tight end.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Well, that's that's just Madden. That's just Madden, not anymore
- 19:31Speaker 2: that no real football team is offer the fixed it finally,
- 19:36Speaker 2: so Locks Hunter, Henry, and Austin Hooper are going to
- 19:39Speaker 2: be here. I feel pretty comfortable saying that the two
- 19:43Speaker 2: quick questions are do they carry a third tight end,
- 19:47Speaker 2: a true third tight end? And do they carry a
- 19:51Speaker 2: full back? I'm willing to bet that they're going to
- 19:54Speaker 2: carry a full back. Is it brock Lampy? I think
- 19:58Speaker 2: so too. I don't know for a fact that it's
- 20:01Speaker 2: gonna be brock Lampy. It could be somebody else. I
- 20:03Speaker 2: did look this up. Yakab Johnson's in Houston. He's on
- 20:06Speaker 2: the Texans roster, so probably not gonna be him. It
- 20:09Speaker 2: could be somebody else, but I believe that they're gonna
- 20:13Speaker 2: carry a full back right now. That fullback on this
- 20:15Speaker 2: team is Brock Lampy. So Brock Lampy is the third
- 20:18Speaker 2: guy that I have on But as of right now,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I do not have them carrying a true third tight end.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Jean Bell, Jack west Over, CJ. Dupre G, Scott Junior
- 20:27Speaker 2: are the candidates there. And the main reason why I
- 20:30Speaker 2: don't have them carrying a third tight end is because
- 20:32Speaker 2: I think this is what the practice squad is now
- 20:34Speaker 2: built for. I don't know. I think those guys, to
- 20:36Speaker 2: use a baseball term, those guys are four A players,
- 20:40Speaker 2: and so do you need to take up a roster
- 20:42Speaker 2: spot on a third tight end? Where if you get
- 20:45Speaker 2: into a game week and you're like, we're gonna be
- 20:47Speaker 2: twelve personnel heavy, Like the game plan is twelve personnel heavy,
- 20:50Speaker 2: and if knock on Wood, some Henry or Hooper goes down,
- 20:54Speaker 2: then we have to throw out the entire game plan
- 20:56Speaker 2: because we don't have a second tight end to put
- 20:58Speaker 2: on the field. So maybe this week we elevate jam Bell,
- 21:01Speaker 2: or this week we elevate CJ. Duprie. I just don't
- 21:04Speaker 2: know if those guys are gonna be sought after commodities
- 21:09Speaker 2: enough to have to keep them on the initial fifty
- 21:12Speaker 2: three man roster. So right now I have Henry Hooper
- 21:15Speaker 2: and Brock Lampy.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm I'm with you. I have the same thing.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I just think you can nobody emerged and look, maybe
- 21:23Speaker 1: somebody and CJ. Depriez kind of the guy you look
- 21:25Speaker 1: at here because he's a blocking tight end. And what
- 21:27Speaker 1: happens when the pads come on, Maybe somebody emerges and
- 21:30Speaker 1: has a strong enough summer that now you feel, okay,
- 21:32Speaker 1: we have to keep him on the roster. Right sure,
- 21:34Speaker 1: but for the time being, as it looks right now,
- 21:36Speaker 1: you can get I mean, I think of the four,
- 21:38Speaker 1: You're probably not gonna keep four tight ends on the
- 21:40Speaker 1: practice squad, but you could keep two even three of
- 21:43Speaker 1: these guys between Jaheen Bell G Scott, CJ. Deprie and
- 21:45Speaker 1: Jack west Over. Jack west Over got some decent run
- 21:47Speaker 1: this spring. Let's not write him out of this, and
- 21:50Speaker 1: then you just elevate guys as needed. Like that's such
- 21:52Speaker 1: a classic usage of that practice squad elevation and it's
- 21:55Speaker 1: what three per player. Right, So let's say you keep
- 21:59Speaker 1: three of them. Let's say you keep Bell to pre
- 22:01Speaker 1: in Westover. That's nine weeks. That's nine weeks or third
- 22:06Speaker 1: tight ends you have lined up, and we know how
- 22:09Speaker 1: this works out. Obviously you're not rooting for injury, but
- 22:11Speaker 1: eventually his spot's gonna open up, and when you need
- 22:13Speaker 1: to put a tight end on the roster, you'll put
- 22:15Speaker 1: a tight end on the roster. So for now, I
- 22:17Speaker 1: think they could take advantage of the practice squad elevation.
- 22:19Speaker 1: They only need to keep the two tight ends in
- 22:21Speaker 1: Lampy and they'll just elevate guys.
- 22:23Speaker 2: So a couple of things I want to unpack here
- 22:26Speaker 2: Jeane Bell. I want to start with him. I've been
- 22:29Speaker 2: a little bit disappointed so far, and I know it's
- 22:31Speaker 2: maybe a little bit unfair to say disappointed because here's
- 22:33Speaker 2: a seventh round pick, and my expectations probably shouldn't have
- 22:36Speaker 2: been very high. But at the same time, I didn't
- 22:39Speaker 2: when they drafted him. I didn't feel like he was
- 22:41Speaker 2: a true seventh round pick. I felt like his talent
- 22:44Speaker 2: level was higher than that. A lot of projections had
- 22:47Speaker 2: him going like in the early to mid day three range,
- 22:50Speaker 2: and he fell to the seventh round because essentially because
- 22:53Speaker 2: he's a player without a position, Like he's kind of
- 22:55Speaker 2: this tweeter full back tight end type. It's a little
- 22:57Speaker 2: too tall, a little too big to be a full
- 22:59Speaker 2: beat but he's not a natural in line tight end either.
- 23:04Speaker 2: So he's kind of a man without a home right now,
- 23:06Speaker 2: or man without a position, and that hurt him in
- 23:09Speaker 2: the draft as well. And I just wonder, and maybe
- 23:12Speaker 2: it's not in this system. Maybe this is not the
- 23:15Speaker 2: right fit for him. Maybe he needs a John hu
- 23:17Speaker 2: Smith type that needs to be in a West Coast
- 23:20Speaker 2: offense with Kyle Shanahan or with Mike McDaniel who had
- 23:24Speaker 2: a great year with John hu Smith last year. But
- 23:27Speaker 2: there's got to be a way in theory that somebody
- 23:31Speaker 2: could tap into that. Jaheinm Bell athleticism, like, he's clearly
- 23:34Speaker 2: a great athlete, tested extremely well, a big, fast, strong guy. Like,
- 23:39Speaker 2: there's clearly a raw skill set there and a raw
- 23:42Speaker 2: talent there. But in my opinion, the way that you
- 23:46Speaker 2: have to go about untapping that is that it's very
- 23:50Speaker 2: he has to have a very scheme specific role. You know,
- 23:54Speaker 2: you're gonna have to find ways schematically to get him
- 23:57Speaker 2: the ball in pockets of space. Where he can use
- 24:00Speaker 2: his ball carrying skill, whether it's a screen, whether it's
- 24:04Speaker 2: you know, sliding him across the formation on a bootleg,
- 24:07Speaker 2: whether it's a crossing route, a seam route, just things
- 24:10Speaker 2: that are runways that create those foot races for him
- 24:13Speaker 2: all over the field. If you're asking him to just
- 24:15Speaker 2: like run routes and break down and catch the ball,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and he's gonna look clunky, and it's gonna look on
- 24:21Speaker 2: orthodox a lot like it did for Johnny Right in
- 24:23Speaker 2: this offense, It's just not gonna look right. So is
- 24:26Speaker 2: there a world that Jahean Bell works here? Like, what's
- 24:31Speaker 2: the path for Jaheim Bell to work here? Because I
- 24:34Speaker 2: still think it's ideally his role is pretty similar to
- 24:38Speaker 2: like how the forty nine ers use Kyle Uschek, Like
- 24:41Speaker 2: he's a traditional fullback some of the time, probably the
- 24:44Speaker 2: majority of the time, but in reality he's kind of
- 24:47Speaker 2: this Swiss army knife blocker who can block from multiple alignments,
- 24:52Speaker 2: catch the ball from multiple alignments, detached from the formation,
- 24:55Speaker 2: not a guy that's got his hand in the dirt
- 24:57Speaker 2: at the end of the line of scrimmage. So do
- 24:58Speaker 2: you do you see a path for Jama Bell here?
- 25:00Speaker 1: There's a path I just didn't don't know. Okay, so
- 25:03Speaker 1: you keeping a true fullback in an H back because
- 25:06Speaker 1: like we've talked about this, I think he can do
- 25:08Speaker 1: some of that Kyle used check fullback stuff, but that's
- 25:10Speaker 1: not how Josh McDaniels has traditionally used the position. He's
- 25:13Speaker 1: used the position is who's meeting the linebacker in the
- 25:15Speaker 1: A gap? And that's something that you know, Bell's not
- 25:18Speaker 1: really a blocker in that way. He's not somebody who's
- 25:21Speaker 1: just gonna put his head down the way Lampy does
- 25:23Speaker 1: so and they they've struggled with scheme touch players as
- 25:26Speaker 1: a whole, like you said with John hu Smith. So
- 25:28Speaker 1: I mean you could keep both when you're having an
- 25:32Speaker 1: H back where you also have a traditional fullback. So
- 25:35Speaker 1: he's doing less. That's a pretty limited role. I don't
- 25:37Speaker 1: know if you're using a roster spot on that, but
- 25:39Speaker 1: that's what they would have to deem that one role,
- 25:42Speaker 1: and he probably played a ton of special teams. They'd
- 25:45Speaker 1: have to deem that role being worth a practice squad spot,
- 25:48Speaker 1: agree or a roster spot.
- 25:49Speaker 2: If he can't play traditional full back. I think it's
- 25:51Speaker 2: a tough path for him, and I don't think that
- 25:53Speaker 2: he's really he's high cut, so he's not really built
- 25:56Speaker 2: to like sink and meet the guy in the hole,
- 25:58Speaker 2: and and.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Like, really, what are you looking for more out of
- 26:01Speaker 1: that role? So that traditional fullback stuff, So you're gonna
- 26:03Speaker 1: keep the guy that's better than that in Lampy.
- 26:05Speaker 2: So, like you said that, that brings us to Dupre
- 26:08Speaker 2: and Jack Westover, who Jack Westover got a lot of
- 26:11Speaker 2: run in the Spring. Yeah, I don't know how much
- 26:13Speaker 2: I'm going to look into that. It's a spring they
- 26:15Speaker 2: like Jack west Over. Austin Hooper wasn't really a full
- 26:18Speaker 2: go It didn't seem like for some of the Spring.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Right, But somebody from that group before had to get
- 26:22Speaker 1: those and it was Jack Westover.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So what do we make of that because he if
- 26:26Speaker 2: we're just taking that phase of value of what was
- 26:29Speaker 2: happening in front of us during the last couple of weeks,
- 26:31Speaker 2: Jack Westover was involved.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Jack west Over right now might be the third tight
- 26:36Speaker 1: end and that can change. But that's what that told
- 26:38Speaker 1: me is he's the third And look, I think you
- 26:40Speaker 1: split that into well, Jahem Bell is not going to
- 26:43Speaker 1: do the stuff Austin Hooper did. He's more specialized and
- 26:46Speaker 1: even CJ. Dpreeze more of a blocker. He's not going
- 26:48Speaker 1: to do the stuff Austin Hooper did, So it breaks
- 26:50Speaker 1: down a little bit more. But if that's what they like,
- 26:52Speaker 1: what do they want? We kind of are assuming they
- 26:54Speaker 1: want a blocker for that third ten end and that
- 26:55Speaker 1: would make sense. What if they just want another body
- 26:58Speaker 1: who can do the stuff Hooper and Henry do as
- 27:01Speaker 1: you know insurance, Well, then it's between Jack west Over
- 27:04Speaker 1: and g Scott. Yeah, because that's those I mean. G
- 27:06Speaker 1: Scott was a four star receiver at Ohio State and
- 27:09Speaker 1: then move I think he was four star and then
- 27:11Speaker 1: moved to tight end. He's a true receiving tight end.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Does Jack Westover give you any Jacob Hollister vibes? Maybe
- 27:19Speaker 2: that's just the lazy comparison a little bit, but that's
- 27:22Speaker 2: kind of how I see him. And like Jacob Hollister,
- 27:25Speaker 2: not that he's had this great career, but like the
- 27:28Speaker 2: times that he has been good, it's been stuff near
- 27:31Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage, and there's a pretty good athlete.
- 27:33Speaker 2: He can win those foot races to the to the
- 27:36Speaker 2: edges and things like that on you know, shallow crossers
- 27:39Speaker 2: and things and leaks into the flat and like all
- 27:42Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. That's that's sort of how I
- 27:44Speaker 2: see Jack west Over in terms of the skill set.
- 27:46Speaker 1: He's carved out an eight year NFL career. There's a
- 27:49Speaker 1: spot for that guy in the league, and there are
- 27:51Speaker 1: some similarities there. It doesn't mean that he's great, but
- 27:55Speaker 1: there's a spot for that guy in the league.
- 27:56Speaker 2: So CJ. Dupree, I'm still holding out hope that that's
- 27:59Speaker 2: one of my UDF guys, and I still have I
- 28:02Speaker 2: still have real estate on CG. Deprie Island.
- 28:05Speaker 1: By the way, G Scott was the seventy seventieth ranked
- 28:08Speaker 1: player in the class at twenty twenty.
- 28:10Speaker 2: Is that good?
- 28:11Speaker 1: The top one hundred recruit good. He's the seventieth best
- 28:14Speaker 1: player in his high school class NATE nationally and he's
- 28:19Speaker 1: an there right, here's a wide receiver recruited Ohio State.
- 28:22Speaker 1: That's usually something pretty good.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, So maybe he's that.
- 28:28Speaker 1: I'm just saying, I think everybody got excited about c J. Deprie,
- 28:31Speaker 1: and I am excited about it. Part of the reason
- 28:33Speaker 1: you get excited about c J.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Dupris I got real estate on the island. I had
- 28:36Speaker 2: a big nice.
- 28:37Speaker 1: And I'm not saying it's wrong to be excited about him.
- 28:39Speaker 1: But part of the reason I think from a Patriots
- 28:41Speaker 1: perspective you get excited about him is their tap two
- 28:44Speaker 1: tight ends aren't really blockers. He's a blocking tight end.
- 28:48Speaker 1: It makes a lot of sense. There's a clear path there.
- 28:51Speaker 1: The path or g Scott maybe isn't as clear. But
- 28:54Speaker 1: that's not to say like he's not a it's not
- 28:56Speaker 1: to say he's a scrub, like there is something there.
- 28:59Speaker 1: It's we are all assuming again the Patriots want to
- 29:02Speaker 1: blocking tight end in that role. So what I would
- 29:04Speaker 1: do personally, and I you know, there's logic for them
- 29:07Speaker 1: doing that. What if we're wrong in assuming that, What
- 29:10Speaker 1: if they want a third receiving tight end. If that's
- 29:13Speaker 1: what it is, then it's again it's westover g Scott
- 29:16Speaker 1: over Dupree. Because if you're looking for a guy that okay,
- 29:19Speaker 1: if Hunter Henry goes down or Austin Hooper goes down,
- 29:22Speaker 1: and we want a guy that we can put out
- 29:23Speaker 1: in the pattern, those are the guys who are gonna
- 29:25Speaker 1: give the role to Yeah, which is again I think
- 29:28Speaker 1: all the more reason that you're keeping as many of
- 29:31Speaker 1: those guys as you can on the practice squad to
- 29:33Speaker 1: have them ready at that situation occurs.
- 29:35Speaker 2: So the last thing I want to back here at
- 29:37Speaker 2: this position before we move on the full back. I
- 29:40Speaker 2: we both feel like the fullbacks back and yeah, when
- 29:43Speaker 2: we saw it in the spring, there's a lot bit
- 29:45Speaker 2: happy about that. Yes, there's a lot of fullback stuff
- 29:48Speaker 2: going on in the spring, a lot of regular a
- 29:49Speaker 2: lot of base personnel going on with the full back.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Brock Lampy right now is the guy. And I've used
- 29:56Speaker 2: this analogy before, but it's like when you're on a
- 29:58Speaker 2: hockey team or a lacrosse team that has one goalie
- 30:01Speaker 2: and so you just automatically default know who the goalie is.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Right now, that's Brock Lampy at the full back position.
- 30:07Speaker 2: And the one thing that always excites me about the
- 30:10Speaker 2: full back and the usage of the full back. And
- 30:13Speaker 2: I should just say from a number standpoint, the last
- 30:16Speaker 2: two Josh McDaniels offense is for the full season. He
- 30:19Speaker 2: got fired mid season in Vegas. So twenty one and
- 30:23Speaker 2: twenty two with the Patriots and with the Raiders, both
- 30:26Speaker 2: offenses were top five in the league in twenty one.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Personnel usage, So two running backs or two backs in
- 30:32Speaker 2: the backfield one tight end, usually a running back in
- 30:36Speaker 2: a full back. So both times, by the way, Jakub
- 30:39Speaker 2: Johnson was the fullback right. So they have a type.
- 30:43Speaker 2: They've used it at one of the highest clips in
- 30:46Speaker 2: the league. We saw it in the spring. It would
- 30:49Speaker 2: be an upset at this point to say that there
- 30:51Speaker 2: would be no fullback in this offense moving forward. The
- 30:54Speaker 2: fullback has a lot of schematic advantages that I've asked
- 30:58Speaker 2: a lot of people about over the years, and the
- 31:02Speaker 2: biggest one from just a true x's and o's standpoint,
- 31:07Speaker 2: is that the full back can go both ways. Right,
- 31:09Speaker 2: like a tight end that's lined up on the line
- 31:12Speaker 2: of scrimmage, it's harder for that tight end to now,
- 31:15Speaker 2: let's say he's lined up on the right side of
- 31:17Speaker 2: the formation, it's hard to get him over to the
- 31:20Speaker 2: left side of the formation right. And so as a defense,
- 31:23Speaker 2: when you start to mirror what the offense is doing defensively,
- 31:28Speaker 2: like you're gonna be tilted mostly towards the strong side
- 31:31Speaker 2: of the formation where that extra tight end is. From
- 31:33Speaker 2: a front standpoint, so with the full back, there's an
- 31:37Speaker 2: unpredictable element because he's lined up. You know, if you're
- 31:41Speaker 2: power eye right he's lined up right in front of
- 31:43Speaker 2: the running back and they could go left or they
- 31:46Speaker 2: could go right just as easily. There's no tell there.
- 31:50Speaker 2: The other thing that I really like about the full
- 31:52Speaker 2: back that I'm glad that it's back. Well, I should
- 31:54Speaker 2: also say he's also just a freaking battering ram up
- 31:57Speaker 2: the middle of the field for the running back.
- 32:00Speaker 1: This for mister Caveman football.
- 32:03Speaker 2: That that helps having that Now you're geting that that light.
- 32:09Speaker 2: I think what did they describe James Devilon as like
- 32:12Speaker 2: a green light? Like, you know, follow the light, right,
- 32:14Speaker 2: follow James Devlin. That does make your job easier as
- 32:17Speaker 2: a running back.
- 32:18Speaker 1: I just just so clear on where you stand because
- 32:20Speaker 1: you're usually well, you know, we need you know, it's
- 32:24Speaker 1: got to be more than just crash heads.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Smash hair and a steal hair.
- 32:28Speaker 1: All right, but this is what you're describing, and you
- 32:30Speaker 1: sound very excited about I am.
- 32:31Speaker 2: Excited about it, Okay, I'm very because the real reason
- 32:35Speaker 2: why I'm excited about it, Alex, is because using the
- 32:40Speaker 2: full back to get those again I'll go baseball, to
- 32:46Speaker 2: get the singles to get on base is great, but
- 32:49Speaker 2: using the full back and play action for the home
- 32:52Speaker 2: runs is really what you're trying.
- 32:53Speaker 1: To set fit in because the nerds hate singles.
- 32:55Speaker 2: You're just trying you're you're really trying to set up
- 32:58Speaker 2: the big pass. That's really what you're trying.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Well, and it makes it easier because if you have
- 33:04Speaker 1: the fullback on the field, the defense either has to
- 33:06Speaker 1: get bigger defensively it's gonna make it easier to pass
- 33:09Speaker 1: the football, or get smaller and then you just run it.
- 33:12Speaker 1: That's what the twenty eighteen Patriots did because they had
- 33:14Speaker 1: Tom Brady. And look, Patriots don't have Tom Brady now,
- 33:16Speaker 1: but like they put the fullback on the field, the
- 33:19Speaker 1: defense wasn't willing to go to a bigger package because
- 33:21Speaker 1: they didn't want Brady carving them up, so they just
- 33:24Speaker 1: ran it down everybody's throats for sixty minutes.
- 33:26Speaker 2: So there's the advantage, like you just said, of matching
- 33:30Speaker 2: personnel base on base or nickel or dime on base,
- 33:34Speaker 2: and then you run the ball base on base, you
- 33:36Speaker 2: throw the ball. There's all sorts of really great advantages
- 33:43Speaker 2: for the offense of being in a base formation, being
- 33:48Speaker 2: in a run formation with base personnel, and then throwing
- 33:52Speaker 2: out of that base personnel. It's probably the best way
- 33:54Speaker 2: to throw the football if you can, if you have
- 33:56Speaker 2: the base personnel to do it at a high level,
- 33:59Speaker 2: it's it can be really prolific. Then the other thing
- 34:02Speaker 2: with the full back, just from a post nap perspective,
- 34:05Speaker 2: is that now you can mimic the run plays and
- 34:08Speaker 2: you can make all of it look the same. So
- 34:11Speaker 2: we just talked about how it's easier to run behind
- 34:13Speaker 2: the full back and you know, go right up the
- 34:15Speaker 2: middle of the gut of the defense with the full
- 34:17Speaker 2: back leading the way. Well, now you have the full
- 34:20Speaker 2: back go right up the gut of the middle of
- 34:21Speaker 2: the defense. But now it's play action, and so those
- 34:24Speaker 2: linebackers have no choice most of the time but to
- 34:27Speaker 2: react to that action, step up downhill into the line
- 34:31Speaker 2: of scrimmage, and that's when you get the crossers, the
- 34:35Speaker 2: seam routes, you know, gronk up the seam off the action.
- 34:39Speaker 2: The lead action is just like a classic vintage McDaniel's play.
- 34:44Speaker 2: So I'm a big full back guy. I think there's
- 34:46Speaker 2: a lot of schematic advantages to having the full back.
- 34:48Speaker 2: I'm glad that they're bringing the full back back their
- 34:51Speaker 2: short yardage offense too. There are power numbers or so
- 34:54Speaker 2: much better in the full back era than the non
- 34:57Speaker 2: full back era recently. Again, that's more to the first
- 35:01Speaker 2: point of do you just have that battering ram in
- 35:02Speaker 2: front of everybody? But short yardage, goal line power number
- 35:06Speaker 2: is much better. Throwing out a base personnel with the
- 35:10Speaker 2: full back in the backfield is can be really efficient offense.
- 35:13Speaker 2: So I'm all for the full back coming back, and
- 35:15Speaker 2: I think we're getting that. So that's tight end slash
- 35:18Speaker 2: full back. We're both at Henry Hooper brock Lampy for
- 35:22Speaker 2: the time being. Let's get to offensive line, which is
- 35:27Speaker 2: a beefy position. I almost want to break this up
- 35:30Speaker 2: into guards and interior guards, tackles, excuse me, and interior guys.
- 35:33Speaker 1: There are that many guys. There's I have one guy
- 35:35Speaker 1: that we too. I guess that really crossed that.
- 35:38Speaker 2: There's so many guys, that's my point in general. And JUI,
- 35:42Speaker 2: so I have let's see, I have ten.
- 35:45Speaker 1: I was so tempted to keep ten. I up with nine.
- 35:47Speaker 1: But my fifty fourth or fifty fifth player is so
- 35:53Speaker 1: fifty fourth player at tackle? Yeah, two locks, will Campbell,
- 35:58Speaker 1: Morgan Moses. Obviously I do have Kitten Wallace on right now,
- 36:05Speaker 1: and I think that there's some flexibility there with him
- 36:07Speaker 1: being able to play some guard like we saw in
- 36:09Speaker 1: the spring too, so I think he's going to stick around.
- 36:12Speaker 1: As of right now, I have a Darian low On
- 36:15Speaker 1: the main reason why I have a Darian Lowe on
- 36:17Speaker 1: is I just don't until I see King Kate Walls,
- 36:21Speaker 1: you don't have a backup left tackle exactly.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I don't like who's truly the backup left tackle out
- 36:25Speaker 2: of this group. And then I also have them holding
- 36:27Speaker 2: on to Marcus Brian as a developmental player. But you're
- 36:29Speaker 2: not putting.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Marcus Bryant then keeping five tackles.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Five tackles, okay, because I feel like Kitten Wallace is
- 36:35Speaker 2: more at this point like a flex or swing player
- 36:38Speaker 2: inside outside.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Kten Wallas is right tackle. Combo card, I don't think
- 36:42Speaker 1: you're putting Kan Walls a left tackle less it's an emergency.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Agreed, and I as.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Marcus Bryant left tack before I put Kane Wallace there.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I think I would probably too. And then Vaderian Lowe
- 36:52Speaker 2: I have there. I know he's a point of contention
- 36:56Speaker 2: with people after last year, but really, what's your left
- 37:01Speaker 2: tackle depth look like if he's not here?
- 37:04Speaker 1: So I got a little creative with it. Okay, so
- 37:06Speaker 1: I have more Campbell Moses Wallace, yep. And so I
- 37:11Speaker 1: was between for my backup left tackle because I'm with,
- 37:13Speaker 1: you need somebody. I ended up cutting Marcus Bryant because
- 37:16Speaker 1: I went purely on versatility. I have Jack Connelly, and
- 37:20Speaker 1: the idea being if Will Campbell gets hurt in a game,
- 37:24Speaker 1: it might not be pretty, but Jack Connelly's played it.
- 37:26Speaker 1: He'll get you through the week. And then you're keeping
- 37:28Speaker 1: Marcus Brian on the practice squad and maybe Venderien Lowe
- 37:31Speaker 1: as well, and then the next week you add one
- 37:33Speaker 1: of those guys to the roster if Will Campbell's gonna
- 37:35Speaker 1: miss time.
- 37:36Speaker 2: So that's not a good spot to be in. There's
- 37:39Speaker 2: a lot and I don't mean.
- 37:40Speaker 1: It's not that different than your spot, no, No, I.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Just mean in Jet like regardless.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Of yeah, they don't ever real backup left tackle.
- 37:46Speaker 5: Now.
- 37:48Speaker 2: I think that you could probably say that about a
- 37:49Speaker 2: lot of teams. Yeah, there's a tackle. There's a depression
- 37:54Speaker 2: on tackles right now, and I think there's a lot
- 37:56Speaker 2: of teams that probably sit back and say, oh, our
- 37:58Speaker 2: depth at left tackle is not great. But he's the
- 38:02Speaker 2: fourth overall pick, so he this comes with the territory
- 38:06Speaker 2: of something of this territory of being the fourth overall pick.
- 38:11Speaker 2: When I did this exercise, it definitely put in perspective
- 38:14Speaker 2: how much is riding on Will Campbell. Yes, and it
- 38:16Speaker 2: doesn't even need to be that Will Campbell's a stud.
- 38:19Speaker 2: He has to be starting cal he needs to be
- 38:20Speaker 2: starting caliber, and he needs to make it the season
- 38:23Speaker 2: like he's gonna have to, like if they have a
- 38:25Speaker 2: major injury. Again, knock on Wood to Will Campbell. That's
- 38:29Speaker 2: one of those Janga pieces that I think, now you're back.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Now you're back where you were last year, essentially because
- 38:33Speaker 1: they didn't really add a true backup left tackle. So
- 38:35Speaker 1: again I was between. The reason I didn't keep Low
- 38:39Speaker 1: is because whether it's Bryant or whether it's Conley, Marcus
- 38:43Speaker 1: Bryant can play both tackle spots. Jack Connelly can play
- 38:46Speaker 1: both tackle spots and both guard spots. Now can he
- 38:49Speaker 1: do it at an NFL level? This is what we're
- 38:51Speaker 1: gonna see this summer, And maybe Jack Connelly comes out
- 38:53Speaker 1: this summer and isn't good and all. Justin I'll put
- 38:56Speaker 1: Marcus Bryant, Irvener and Low back on the roster right,
- 38:59Speaker 1: but they were giving him a ton of opportunities to spring.
- 39:01Speaker 1: It felt like they're moving him around. It felt like
- 39:03Speaker 1: somebody they wanted to keep. And if he can play
- 39:06Speaker 1: on the left side again, it's not like you're going
- 39:09Speaker 1: into the season you can't make moves. You might end
- 39:11Speaker 1: up in a bad spot for a game, as they
- 39:13Speaker 1: did multiple times last year. Who was the guy they
- 39:15Speaker 1: got off the Rams practice squad who had like never
- 39:17Speaker 1: played tackle and he had to play tackle for half
- 39:19Speaker 1: a game because people got hurt, and then they cut him.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Oh do you know what I'm talking about?
- 39:24Speaker 2: Then the name is right because.
- 39:26Speaker 1: They ran through so many different players last year. But
- 39:30Speaker 1: the point being, like I think Jack Connelly could if
- 39:34Speaker 1: he's the player I think he is. I don't know
- 39:36Speaker 1: that I want him starting games for the Patriots at
- 39:41Speaker 1: left tackle, But if he has to get you through
- 39:42Speaker 1: the rest of a game after campbellill it gets hurt,
- 39:45Speaker 1: and then you bring low Er Bryant back from the
- 39:47Speaker 1: practice squad the next week, that's what you do.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Okay, that's a fair enough reasoning, I just.
- 39:52Speaker 1: And the same could be said for Marcus Bryant. Literally,
- 39:55Speaker 1: the tiebreaker for me was Marcus Bryant plays both tackles.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Connolly plays both tackles and both guards. And with the
- 40:02Speaker 1: guy that you're talking about, Zack Thomas instead of two. Yes,
- 40:05Speaker 1: I knew it was the name of another NFL players,
- 40:07Speaker 1: Zach Tom Zach Thomas.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yes, so I understand what you're talking about. I just again,
- 40:13Speaker 2: I look at Will Campbell rookie. I'm not saying that
- 40:18Speaker 2: Will Campbell's gonna get bench for Vaderian Lowe by any means.
- 40:21Speaker 2: There is there a chance of that Will Campbell gets
- 40:24Speaker 2: hurt though, as a rookie in his first NFL season
- 40:27Speaker 2: and doesn't go the full seventeen games. I think there
- 40:30Speaker 2: you have to count on that being a possibility. And
- 40:32Speaker 2: Vaderian Lowe right now is the only guy on the
- 40:34Speaker 2: team with that as any real starting experience at the position.
- 40:38Speaker 2: So Jack Colley's an interesting one. You know, maybe he
- 40:41Speaker 2: earns that kind of keep. So I interior offensive line
- 40:45Speaker 2: now on when who Bradbury Cole Strange? Right now? I
- 40:52Speaker 2: have Jared Wilson and City so on as well. So
- 40:55Speaker 2: I do not have Leyden Robinson on.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I don't either. I have Connolly on when who so Strange,
- 41:00Speaker 1: brad Berry, Wilson, and then I had Ben Brown right
- 41:03Speaker 1: on the bubble.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Yeah, so I have Laydon Robinson and Ben Brown is
- 41:06Speaker 2: right on the bubble as well. On when New Bradbury strange.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I feel pretty good that those three are going to
- 41:11Speaker 2: be here, and Wilson obviously as the rookie, uh you
- 41:15Speaker 2: know third Brown pick will be here as well. Really
- 41:17Speaker 2: it's just a matter of do you need to keep
- 41:19Speaker 2: a fifth guy in that.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Mix again, like a guy like Connelly who can play
- 41:25Speaker 1: guard and tackle.
- 41:26Speaker 2: That's why I thought, that's what I kept sitting so
- 41:29Speaker 2: for maybe a little bit.
- 41:30Speaker 1: I don't think that city can play tackle.
- 41:31Speaker 2: I don't think you left tackle. I think maybe right there.
- 41:34Speaker 1: I mean when when it comes to Laane Robinson, like
- 41:36Speaker 1: because I've been asked why I wasn't talking about him
- 41:38Speaker 1: or he we didn't really see him in the spring,
- 41:40Speaker 1: and it didn't seem like he was hurt. He just
- 41:41Speaker 1: wasn't getting reps Tyrese Robinson got more reps than Laden
- 41:44Speaker 1: Robinson did.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I don't know what's going on with Landon Robinson.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Did you have west whitz on before he retired.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Yes, so did I. I don't know what's going on
- 41:52Speaker 2: with Leydon Robinson It's one of the bigger under the
- 41:57Speaker 2: radar storylines that I would say I have about the
- 42:00Speaker 2: offensive line right now. It just doesn't seem like he's
- 42:04Speaker 2: in their plans.
- 42:05Speaker 1: It doesn't.
- 42:06Speaker 2: I don't know what it is. I don't know if
- 42:07Speaker 2: it's that he's not picking it up. I don't know
- 42:09Speaker 2: if when I say up it, I mean the scheme,
- 42:12Speaker 2: the offense, he's not picking it up. I don't know
- 42:16Speaker 2: what it is. I don't want to speculate. I have
- 42:18Speaker 2: no idea, but based off the spring, it was strange.
- 42:23Speaker 2: It was Schweitzer when he was still participating. It was
- 42:26Speaker 2: Tyrese Robinson, it was City, it was pretty much anybody.
- 42:30Speaker 1: Everybody.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's telling. That's got to be telling.
- 42:34Speaker 1: It definite, As somebody pointed out to me, just we'll
- 42:36Speaker 1: get Tide receivers in a second. I have as many
- 42:39Speaker 1: twenty twenty five udfas making the team as I do
- 42:42Speaker 1: twenty twenty four draft picks.
- 42:43Speaker 2: That's fair. I mean, this is it's a new vision,
- 42:46Speaker 2: it's a new coaching staff, it's a new offense. You
- 42:51Speaker 2: have to think in terms of everybody on this team
- 42:55Speaker 2: is starting from square one with Mike Rable. You have
- 42:58Speaker 2: not done anything for Mike Rabel yet, So yeah, it
- 43:02Speaker 2: just doesn't. There's no sacred cows because of that. Besides,
- 43:04Speaker 2: you know, maybe like Drake May Christian Gonzales, but there's
- 43:07Speaker 2: really no sacred cows when it comes to these kinds
- 43:10Speaker 2: of guys. So the other thing that I find a
- 43:13Speaker 2: little bit interesting about this offensive line is just how
- 43:16Speaker 2: the weight is going to be distributed. I don't know,
- 43:18Speaker 2: I know that sounds like silly, but.
- 43:21Speaker 1: They're gonna be bigger on the right side and the
- 43:23Speaker 1: left side. Yeah, and like very classic McDaniels though very
- 43:28Speaker 1: much so.
- 43:28Speaker 2: Though it's gonna be very pronounced because you're gonna have.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Not if they plug City in it left guard.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Well, that's so that's sort of where I'm getting at,
- 43:36Speaker 2: because if I've wanted to be in there, if it's
- 43:38Speaker 2: Will Campbell, Cole Strange, Garrett Bradbury at center, I know
- 43:42Speaker 2: Garrett Bradbury is in the middle, I get it all right.
- 43:45Speaker 2: But if it's that's sort of your three on the
- 43:47Speaker 2: left side, when you're going that direction, that's that's pretty small.
- 43:52Speaker 2: It's pretty small. So then on the right side you
- 43:56Speaker 2: have the house set is Morgan Moses, and you have
- 43:59Speaker 2: the cinder block that is Mike Onwenu. You have like
- 44:03Speaker 2: eight hundred pounds of human being on the right side,
- 44:06Speaker 2: and then you have like these felt athletic offensive linemen
- 44:09Speaker 2: on the left side. It's not the worst thing in
- 44:12Speaker 2: the world in terms of flexibility, and I would agree
- 44:16Speaker 2: in the past they had Solder in Tuney and then
- 44:18Speaker 2: Mason and Cannon like it was similar to that they do.
- 44:21Speaker 2: It's more pronounced than that though, but it's similar. But
- 44:25Speaker 2: it is something that I think about because next to Campbell,
- 44:30Speaker 2: just to go back to the draft conversation a little bit,
- 44:33Speaker 2: the wingspan stuff. The big thing about the wingspan number
- 44:37Speaker 2: was it's it's his girth, right, It's like how wide
- 44:40Speaker 2: of a body he is and how much space that
- 44:42Speaker 2: he takes up. So if he's at left tackle Will Campbell,
- 44:46Speaker 2: which is going to be and then Cole Strange is
- 44:49Speaker 2: your left guard, You're just You're just narrow. You're just
- 44:53Speaker 2: you're just not taking up a whole lot of space
- 44:56Speaker 2: from a natural standpoint. So I've always thought that it
- 45:00Speaker 2: made a lot more sense to have a bigger guard
- 45:03Speaker 2: play next to Will Campbell. On top of that, he's
- 45:06Speaker 2: also playing next to Garrett Bradberry, who is also a
- 45:08Speaker 2: smaller guy. So it would help I think on both
- 45:11Speaker 2: sides of Campbell and brad Berry to have girthier, bigger
- 45:16Speaker 2: dudes next to him at left guard. Who is that
- 45:20Speaker 2: left guard? Is it City City so based on the
- 45:22Speaker 2: ross right now, or could it be my guy Jared Wilson.
- 45:26Speaker 1: I still think that Jared Wilson's good enough to start
- 45:28Speaker 1: you playing at center, Okay, and then that solved some
- 45:31Speaker 1: of your problem with guard in terms of the size
- 45:34Speaker 1: because now your center's bigger, Your center's bigger. I still
- 45:36Speaker 1: think if Jared Wilson's good enough to start, you start
- 45:38Speaker 1: him at center, like you let him work at that position,
- 45:40Speaker 1: and then like Ben Brown's right on the bubble too.
- 45:43Speaker 1: I Ben Brown, So you know how I do like
- 45:45Speaker 1: my like last three on, last three off? Yes, so
- 45:48Speaker 1: I had two linemen that were my like next three
- 45:50Speaker 1: off and it was Marcus Bryant and Ben Brown.
- 45:54Speaker 2: Yeah, so my bubble because.
- 45:56Speaker 1: If you're gonna start Jared Wilson at left guard, like,
- 45:59Speaker 1: let's go down this road. If you're gonna start Jared
- 46:01Speaker 1: Wilson left guard, now you have to keep Ben Brown.
- 46:05Speaker 2: As a backup center. Yeah, unless you kick Jared Wilson
- 46:08Speaker 2: into center.
- 46:08Speaker 1: We know that that's not their philosophy though they want
- 46:11Speaker 1: one in, one out, or if it's Cold Strange Okay,
- 46:15Speaker 1: I didn't think of that year, but either one of those.
- 46:17Speaker 1: But we did col Strange get any center reps in
- 46:19Speaker 1: the spring that we saw not like very sparing, very sparingly, So.
- 46:23Speaker 2: Most of it was in like positions.
- 46:24Speaker 1: I think, well, if Jared Wilson is going to start
- 46:26Speaker 1: a left guard, now, maybe you don't need to keep
- 46:30Speaker 1: Jack Conley, Tyres Robinson, whoever that guy is, and that's
- 46:33Speaker 1: where that spot goes to Ben Brown.
- 46:36Speaker 2: It's just something to think about. They're not very big
- 46:38Speaker 2: on that left side, and they're not gonna they're not
- 46:40Speaker 2: gonna be big at center. If it's Garrett Bradbury either,
- 46:42Speaker 2: who I I know that we're all excited about Jared Wilson,
- 46:46Speaker 2: and there is a world where Jared Wilson just gets healthy,
- 46:48Speaker 2: gets on the field, is participating. It comes out of
- 46:51Speaker 2: a Gang Busters and wins the job away from Bradbury.
- 46:53Speaker 2: But Bradberry's experience, his steadiness, I just feel like there's
- 46:57Speaker 2: a really good chance that Bradbury is the starting center.
- 47:00Speaker 2: So the last one the definitely the one that gets
- 47:03Speaker 2: the most headlines and the most attention is of course
- 47:06Speaker 2: wide receiver. So there's one guy in here that I
- 47:09Speaker 2: was A million guys that I have that are interesting.
- 47:12Speaker 2: But yeah, in terms of the locks, give us the
- 47:15Speaker 2: total number that you have seven same So in terms
- 47:19Speaker 2: of the locks, and I want to say this, we're
- 47:22Speaker 2: gonna do defense next week, so I won't give out
- 47:24Speaker 2: any names. But I did this strictly one time through
- 47:30Speaker 2: just gut reaction, on off, on off, and I got
- 47:34Speaker 2: exactly fifty three players the first time.
- 47:36Speaker 1: That's that's impressive to me.
- 47:39Speaker 2: That tells you just where this roster is, not necessarily
- 47:42Speaker 2: in a bad way, but just kind of in a
- 47:43Speaker 2: bad way. Like there just isn't a whole lot of
- 47:46Speaker 2: guys that I felt guilty being like.
- 47:50Speaker 1: No, I think Larson is the only guy you've said
- 47:52Speaker 1: so far is on the bubble.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Yeah, so at wide receiver. Yeah, there's so many, there's
- 47:58Speaker 2: like a million questions. Yeah, Stefan Diggs is going to
- 48:02Speaker 2: be on the New England Patriots. Is he going to
- 48:04Speaker 2: start the year on pup or is he going to
- 48:06Speaker 2: start the year on the active ross one?
- 48:09Speaker 1: Just based off how he look the spring, I have
- 48:10Speaker 1: him on the active roster.
- 48:11Speaker 2: I do as well, but there's that storyline that's going
- 48:15Speaker 2: to be something to monitor the entire training camp. Stefon
- 48:18Speaker 2: Diggs is going to be here, though, so let's just
- 48:19Speaker 2: earmark him for some sort of spot in this organization.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Tomrio Douglas, I think is fine. Yeah, I think a
- 48:27Speaker 2: good spring, good mini camp especially. I don't think to
- 48:30Speaker 2: Mario Douglas is going anywhere, and of course Kyle Williams
- 48:34Speaker 2: is not going anywhere either as a third round pick.
- 48:37Speaker 2: The one guy that I want to say is a
- 48:39Speaker 2: lock who I'm I'm not one hundred percent Shore because
- 48:41Speaker 2: I hear it from other people in our brother in
- 48:44Speaker 2: the beat is Matt Collins. Like I just I think
- 48:47Speaker 2: Matt Collins is a lock personally because I feel like
- 48:50Speaker 2: they have a vision of on and off the field,
- 48:52Speaker 2: how Matt Collins is going to fit into their culture,
- 48:55Speaker 2: and I they want to change the culture of the team,
- 48:58Speaker 2: but they specifically have to know that room was a
- 49:01Speaker 2: mess last year and they had to specifically attack the
- 49:03Speaker 2: culture of the wide receiver room as well. Yeah, so
- 49:06Speaker 2: even if Matt Collins isn't as individually talented as a
- 49:11Speaker 2: Jayvon Baker or as you know, Jalen Polk or even
- 49:16Speaker 2: as a as a Kendrick Bourne or someone like that.
- 49:20Speaker 2: He has a role, like he has a purpose on
- 49:22Speaker 2: this team. I just don't think that they're gonna shake
- 49:25Speaker 2: from because I think the culture stuff is too important.
- 49:26Speaker 1: To this and the special team stuff too. No, I'm
- 49:28Speaker 1: with you, he's the well with him too, because he
- 49:31Speaker 1: didn't participate in the spring. He did less than Diggs.
- 49:35Speaker 1: So if we're talking about it and it's different injuries,
- 49:37Speaker 1: so I know this isn't like apples to apples, But
- 49:39Speaker 1: if we're talking about Digs maybe being on PUP week one,
- 49:42Speaker 1: what is that like? I was tempted to put Mac
- 49:43Speaker 1: Collins on PUP. I kept him. I gave him a
- 49:45Speaker 1: Week one spot because I don't know it hasn't been
- 49:49Speaker 1: reported that he could miss the start of the season.
- 49:50Speaker 1: I feel like we would have heard something like that
- 49:52Speaker 1: by now. So I have him and Digs on the
- 49:56Speaker 1: week one roster ready to go.
- 49:57Speaker 2: And I'm also not ruling out or just discarding the
- 50:01Speaker 2: fact that he had a really good year with Josh
- 50:03Speaker 2: McDaniels in Vegas not too long ago.
- 50:05Speaker 1: I did have one guy starting the year on I R.
- 50:06Speaker 1: But we can get to that.
- 50:07Speaker 2: Stefon Diggs, Yeah, mccollins, Tamario Douglas, Kyle Williams. Yeah, these
- 50:14Speaker 2: last three spots, you could you could talk me into
- 50:16Speaker 2: keeping only two of these guys. You could talk me
- 50:18Speaker 2: into all three of them. Kendrick Bourne, yep. I have
- 50:22Speaker 2: Kendrick Bourne on now.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Yeap.
- 50:25Speaker 2: The main reason I have him on now is because
- 50:27Speaker 2: of that twenty twenty one season with Josh McDaniels.
- 50:30Speaker 1: So it's that, and he was very involved in the spring.
- 50:34Speaker 1: He was very involved. It looks like McDaniel still wants
- 50:37Speaker 1: to work with him. He did not. We saw some
- 50:40Speaker 1: wide receivers who will get to who their usage looked
- 50:43Speaker 1: more on the bubble. Kendrick Bourne's usage, now this is
- 50:45Speaker 1: without Diggs and without mccollins, so it does come with
- 50:49Speaker 1: an asterisk. But dig Bourne's usage was not that of
- 50:53Speaker 1: a player that's on the bubble.
- 50:54Speaker 2: I agree, And he's a pure Z, which is what
- 50:57Speaker 2: Stefon Diggs I think will ideally play in this offense
- 51:00Speaker 2: long term play little X and but as a pure
- 51:04Speaker 2: as I guess. My point is is that if Diggs
- 51:06Speaker 2: isn't one hundred percent healthy, sure. Kendrick Bourne is a
- 51:09Speaker 2: quote unquote NFL player at that spot, so that allows him.
- 51:13Speaker 1: He's a pretty he's a pretty good backup if he's
- 51:15Speaker 1: your backup.
- 51:16Speaker 2: Right Like, I don't think that's the Mario Douglas. It
- 51:19Speaker 2: could be Kyle Williams.
- 51:20Speaker 1: In theory, I think that will Kyle Williams play the X.
- 51:22Speaker 2: So do I which worries me a little bit. And
- 51:24Speaker 2: it's certainly not Matt Collins. MC collis a big slot
- 51:27Speaker 2: or X receiver, so that's that's not him. I have
- 51:30Speaker 2: Kayshawn Bouody on I do too. Rapport with May is
- 51:33Speaker 2: important here. Ability to play on the outside is important here. Yep,
- 51:37Speaker 2: we saw it all spring long. It's just there's really
- 51:40Speaker 2: unless it's Digs and Diggs is the full time X,
- 51:43Speaker 2: which is definitely possible. There just isn't really a like
- 51:46Speaker 2: we saw it so much in the spring and last
- 51:48Speaker 2: season of just that's who's on the outside is Kaysehan Boody.
- 51:52Speaker 2: He has a clear rapport with Drake May. I think
- 51:54Speaker 2: that's important. He's one of those guys from last year
- 51:56Speaker 2: that did have some productive moments with Drake May quarterback,
- 52:00Speaker 2: and then you have to have an outside X. You
- 52:03Speaker 2: have to have somebody that can play that role, and
- 52:06Speaker 2: Kaisehon Boody can do it. So I have Kaishan Bouody on,
- 52:09Speaker 2: and then I do have ft Chisholm on as of
- 52:11Speaker 2: right now, yep. Same just McDaniel's binkie like it just
- 52:15Speaker 2: it just feels like that is just too it's too perfect,
- 52:19Speaker 2: Like unless he completely falls off a cliff in the
- 52:21Speaker 2: training camp when the pads come on and we don't
- 52:24Speaker 2: even see him for like the last three weeks of camp.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Maybe that's that happens to him. But as of right now,
- 52:30Speaker 2: the skill set is just too much of a fit
- 52:32Speaker 2: for me to write it off. So Stefan Diggs, Matt
- 52:36Speaker 2: Collins to Mario Douglas, Kyle Williams, Kender Born, Kishan Boodyftn
- 52:39Speaker 2: Chisholm feels one heavy. I would definitely be on the
- 52:43Speaker 2: lookout for a born or a booty trade. I think
- 52:46Speaker 2: that that's possible to kind of get this number down
- 52:48Speaker 2: to six. We didn't say Jalen. I don't get on.
- 52:51Speaker 1: So I don't think any of those seven guys are
- 52:52Speaker 1: getting cut. If you tell me one of them is
- 52:54Speaker 1: getting traded, sure, I could see that I don't think
- 52:56Speaker 1: any of those seven are getting cut. H You mentioned Jalen.
- 52:59Speaker 2: Pole, then didn't say either one of those guys.
- 53:02Speaker 1: You just said that, we didn't say them. So I
- 53:04Speaker 1: Jalen Polk opening on ir me too. He's coming back
- 53:07Speaker 1: from that shoulder injury. They now have this new thing
- 53:10Speaker 1: where you can place the player on IR ahead. You
- 53:12Speaker 1: don't have to keep them on the fifty three ahead
- 53:14Speaker 1: of roster cuts, designated him return. You get two such players.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Now we'll see maybe injuries Mountain camp, but he's working
- 53:20Speaker 1: his way back from his shoulder injury. And then you
- 53:21Speaker 1: kind of see they're not going to carry seven wide
- 53:23Speaker 1: receivers for eighteen weeks. But because there's so much uncertainty,
- 53:28Speaker 1: it gives you a chance to let things play out
- 53:30Speaker 1: and then you see as the season goes on, who
- 53:32Speaker 1: the odd man odd man out are and it putting
- 53:35Speaker 1: Polk on ir kind of extends the opportunity to do
- 53:37Speaker 1: that hundred percent.
- 53:38Speaker 2: It extends the window of essentially you're kicking the decision
- 53:44Speaker 2: down the road of potentially having to move on from
- 53:47Speaker 2: a second round pick early on his rookie contract. You're
- 53:50Speaker 2: kicking the decision down the road. You have that ability
- 53:53Speaker 2: to that flexibility now that he's still here, if somebody
- 53:56Speaker 2: gets hurt, if a roster spot opens up. He's healthy,
- 53:59Speaker 2: he's looking good in practice, like all those things are
- 54:02Speaker 2: starting to line up for him. You activate him, you
- 54:04Speaker 2: put him on the team, and you see what happens.
- 54:06Speaker 2: It just makes him more digestible for the whole room
- 54:10Speaker 2: to just kind of hold your water a little bit
- 54:14Speaker 2: on Jalen Polk right and not have him on the roster.
- 54:17Speaker 2: Javon Baker is the other one. It's a tough world
- 54:19Speaker 2: right now for jayvon Biker.
- 54:21Speaker 1: He didn't get a ton of reps in the spring
- 54:24Speaker 1: that you want if you're a player competing for ross
- 54:26Speaker 1: or spot. We know he struggled with the offense last year.
- 54:30Speaker 1: This is more complex. I like, maybe they keep him
- 54:33Speaker 1: on the practice squad, but I just I don't see
- 54:35Speaker 1: the spot for him on this team.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Neither do I. Neither do I And I like the talent.
- 54:40Speaker 2: I love the pick. I thought it was the right
- 54:42Speaker 2: pick at the time to just bet on the upside
- 54:44Speaker 2: and bet on the talent. It just hasn't worked so far,
- 54:48Speaker 2: at least it hasn't stuck. But just summarize, so this
- 54:52Speaker 2: is our room right now. I think we're both in
- 54:54Speaker 2: the same boat. Stefan Diggs, Matt Collins to Mario Douglas,
- 54:57Speaker 2: Kyle Williams, Kendrick Bourne, Kishan Boudi Eft and Chisholm yep,
- 55:02Speaker 2: one of those guys getting traded. That's my prediction. Probably
- 55:04Speaker 2: it's it's too many. You can't carry seven receivers.
- 55:08Speaker 1: He gets hurt like you never know.
- 55:10Speaker 2: So that's your roster projection right now. For the offense,
- 55:13Speaker 2: we were pretty pretty close. Yeah, I think you had Conley.
- 55:17Speaker 2: I had so I believe it was.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Oh no, I it's so too or there was one
- 55:23Speaker 1: one of those I did running back. You kept three. No,
- 55:27Speaker 1: I'm two players ahead of you because I kept laris
- 55:29Speaker 1: and and Conley. Yes, oh, you kept Venerian Low So
- 55:32Speaker 1: I'm one player ahead of you going to the defense.
- 55:34Speaker 2: But all right, pretty close, pretty close. You're usually better
- 55:38Speaker 2: at this than me. All on that. I'm not very
- 55:41Speaker 2: you know, roster projection wise. I I feel like I
- 55:43Speaker 2: get I get too attached to my the guys that
- 55:46Speaker 2: I like, I us not and that is it. I'd
- 55:49Speaker 2: rather be right right like I'm not thinking enough. I
- 55:51Speaker 2: don't think enough about what they're gonna do I think
- 55:54Speaker 2: about I like this guy the most, so I would
- 55:56Speaker 2: keep this guy on the team. And it's not, as
- 55:58Speaker 2: everybody knows, I am not the one making the decisions
- 56:01Speaker 2: of who's staying on the team.
- 56:02Speaker 1: And it's why when we run a team, you'll be
- 56:04Speaker 1: the coach. I'll be the GM.
- 56:05Speaker 2: All right. So we're going to open it up now
- 56:07Speaker 2: to your calls and emails. We have a lot of
- 56:09Speaker 2: emails coming in a couple. Congratulations for you, by the way,
- 56:12Speaker 2: for your David Andrews podcast.
- 56:15Speaker 1: I mean congrats to him for starting, like you know,
- 56:17Speaker 1: this next phase. I don't know, what a suck up. No,
- 56:21Speaker 1: I'm serious, Like people were congratulating. Yes, I appreciate it,
- 56:24Speaker 1: but it's also like, I don't know.
- 56:26Speaker 2: It's cool. You're in a press release. That's cool. All right,
- 56:29Speaker 2: there we go, But before we get into all your

- 56:57Speaker 1: By the way, I didn't real good job.

- 58:10Speaker 2: I really should read them ahead of time.
- 58:12Speaker 1: You should lawless execution glowing the salespeople under the bus.
- 58:15Speaker 2: I should read them ahead of time because I'm much
- 58:18Speaker 2: better at reading it when I've read it ahead of time.
- 58:20Speaker 2: When I don't read it ahead of times.
- 58:22Speaker 1: What you usually want to usually want to read it
- 58:24Speaker 1: ahead of time. Any copy you're gonna read on the air,
- 58:26Speaker 1: usually try to read ahead of time. Honestly, man, those
- 58:27Speaker 1: segues are awesome, great segues.
- 58:30Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you. This Alex is being nice to me.
- 58:33Speaker 2: This Alex is not being nice to me about my segues.
- 58:36Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just having radio that I was giving
- 58:40Speaker 2: praise to another uh, another closed company, another company. I
- 58:47Speaker 2: was saying that I'm very picked the front work where
- 58:50Speaker 2: that's what.
- 58:50Speaker 1: I could have said that part. If you had said
- 58:53Speaker 1: that part, it would have been a great read. You
- 58:56Speaker 1: just went a little too far with it. I went
- 58:57Speaker 1: a little little too comfortable with it.
- 58:59Speaker 2: You're right, You're right. Okay, I'll work on that for
- 59:01Speaker 2: next time. Shall we take these phone calls? All right?
- 59:04Speaker 2: Nate is in Connecticut. What's up, Nate?
- 59:07Speaker 6: Than guys? Can you guys hear me?
- 59:08Speaker 2: Well, yeah, we got you.
- 59:11Speaker 6: Okay.
- 59:11Speaker 7: I know I called in yesterday and my phone quality
- 59:14Speaker 7: welcome the best, so I'm hoping it's better today.
- 59:16Speaker 1: Sounds good.
- 59:17Speaker 7: But anyways, my question for you guys is have we
- 59:20Speaker 7: heard any update on Terrell Williams. I know he has
- 59:24Speaker 7: had contact with the team, but he hasn't been in
- 59:27Speaker 7: the facilities in person. Any more update on that. And
- 59:31Speaker 7: my second question for you guys is what would you
- 59:33Speaker 7: consider a successful season?
- 59:35Speaker 6: Is it?
- 59:35Speaker 7: Ten wins? Eight wins? Seven wins are just a winning record?
- 59:39Speaker 2: Thank you, guys, thanks for the call, Nate, much better
- 59:42Speaker 2: phone today. Yesterday was not Nate's best phone performance. Today
- 59:46Speaker 2: was much better. Terrell Williams Mike Rabel seemed cautiously optimistic.
- 59:51Speaker 2: I guess I would say at the end of Mini
- 59:53Speaker 2: caampt Terrell Williams will be here soon and we'll be
- 59:57Speaker 2: ready to coach for training camp. But it's something that
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: just in terms of attendance. Unfortunately, given the heal the
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: situation that it's a health situation, he is now on
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: the list of attendance, so we have to check on
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: July twenty third of whether or not he is here.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: But I would say cautiously optimistic that he will be
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: out there based off of what Rabel said.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: Yeah, we haven't heard. That was the last update we've gotten.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: So yeah, in terms of our expectations for the season,
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: that's one that I've struggled with a little bit because
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: I want to I said at the beginning of the
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: last show, I want to be all in on this team.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: I think they have a lot, a lot more talent.
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: I think they have significantly better coaching, and I'm optimistic,
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: but what they have in front of them, I'm just
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: gonna have to see some of it to believe some
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: of it. In terms of predicting them to be in
- 1:00:47Speaker 2: playoff contention or double digit wins, I'm probably right now
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: at like an eight and nine season.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: So for me, it's just I don't know that I
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: can give you a number. I think it's more and
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: I've laid out in the past, Evan my life timeline
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: for a rebuild and a rookie quarterback contract be in
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: the mix for playoff spot. Week eighteen should matter if
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: they ultimately don't get in, but they're playing meaningful football
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: in Week eighteen, and like there's other things within this.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Obviously you want to see Drake may take a step forward,
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: things like that. But I think all things considered, if
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Week eighteen is a meaningful game for them and not
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: in the way it was last year, like a real
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: playoff implication meaningful game for them, I would say they
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: had a That's the baseline for me, Like, okay, I
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: think they had the kind of season they needed to have,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: and then next year the expectation would be not only
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: that they make the playoffs that they are, you know,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Week eighteen is at least relevant for the division that
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: they're competing for, the division down to the end.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: So let me ask you this. Then, Yeah, you said
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: week eighteen not in the way of last year.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Right, that was kind of just tongue in cheap, I know, Yeah.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Two Week eighteen was technically they were a lot in
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Week eighteen it is a game in Buffalo. It was
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: the Naheim Heines two touchdown return game.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Does the game after uh Hamlin, right, Yeah, yeah, I.
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: Think I think it might have been the first home
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: game after that for the Bills. Technically speaking, I believe
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: if they had won that game in twenty twenty two,
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: they were gonna go to.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: The b help. I think they needed help. They'd to
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: win in something else that to happen.
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: But is that Is that meaningful enough if it's something
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: like that, because that team, to me, was already on
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: the downward and you could tell that they were going
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: in the wrong direction. So a lot of it is
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: what it looks like.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: So kind of I guess that's a fair question. Look,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: they started six and four and then went five and
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: two down the stretch, and so this was two and five. Yeah,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: So this is something i'd go to with that, the
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: operational stuff, like, I just want to see signs that
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: they've taken progress going back to the end of Bill.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: They've not been good in November in December now, So look,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: if it's something like that, here here's where again, it's like,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: so I can't it's tough to give a straight answer,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: and I know this is classic me. But like, did
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: they go six and four and then two and five
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: and they're, you know, attempting to back in with the win.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: What if they start two and five and then go
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: six and four and maybe they lose the last week
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: and that's why they don't get in, but they won
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: six of their last ten games.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: That to me would be okay, it's different, right, Like
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: that's what I'm saying, And we'd all depends how say,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: because that Week eighteen game could be meaningful, like it
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: wasn't twenty twenty two, but it wasn't really like you
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: knew that team was not very good.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: You could feel they also okay. But here's here's the thing.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: If they hadn't overachieved in twenty one, if they had
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: won four games in twenty one and then had that season,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: we would look at that a lot differently. It's because
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: they regressed. I find it really hard to believe that
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: this team is going to show regression. And if they do,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: they're not flirting with the playoff spot. We'll know by Halloween,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: yea that they're not in the playoffs. So like, yeah,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: it's a fair point. So I'll tell you these two things.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Be in the mix or playoff spot in week eighteen,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: and be better at the end of the season than
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: they are at the beginning of it. I like, if
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: they do those two things and Drake may show some
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: sign of progression within the team showing progression, it's a
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: successful season.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: To me.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: We are and we got an email about this. We
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: are in the minority in a lot of ways with
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: our feelings on the team. Like there's some people that
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: think that were too low on the team.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: I had them at ten wins on the schedule release day,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: but that well, I said they should win ten games.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: It doesn't mean they will. I said they should win ten.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: But you're that whole take that I agree with about
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: what would deem a successful season To a lot of people,
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: that would not be a successful season. We're talking about.
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: I think, well, eight nine wins and yeah it's pointing upwards,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: but there's still not a playoff team, and that a
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: lot of people would be disappointed with that. I think
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: that's great growth. I think that's over at least double,
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: if not over double, the wins that they had last year.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: It's arrow by the way.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Nine wins might get you in the playoffs in this
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: AFC the conference sucks.
- 1:05:13Speaker 2: It's good at the top, it sucks in the middle sucks.
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: And they don't. They'll like what three good teams at
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: the top? Yeah, I guess they played the Bills twice,
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: so that doesn't help them.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: But oh the Bills are a good team though relative to.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: The conference where it stands right now. Yeah, they're a
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: little better in the Cleveland Browns.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: All right, let's take Patty in aguon. What's up? Patty?
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: What's up?
- 1:05:35Speaker 8: Guys. I'll go over a few things. First thing, getting
- 1:05:38Speaker 8: into the wins. I'd be happy with anything over seven
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: to wins, seven wins or more, just as long as
- 1:05:44Speaker 8: they don't start out seven and zero and end up
- 1:05:46Speaker 8: the season seven and ten. I just want to see growth,
- 1:05:49Speaker 8: and especially growth from Drake May. Like I said on
- 1:05:53Speaker 8: a previous show, I don't think he's I don't think
- 1:05:55Speaker 8: this is good is going to be his breakout year.
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: But I do think he's going to improve, and as
- 1:05:59Speaker 8: long as they steadily improved, I'll be happy with that.
- 1:06:02Speaker 8: My second thing I want to get into I know
- 1:06:04Speaker 8: it's way too early, but I'm giving you my Super
- 1:06:08Speaker 8: Bowl picks this year. I'm picking the Ravens to go
- 1:06:11Speaker 8: up against the Rams and I am taken in an
- 1:06:14Speaker 8: all time classic your guy he's my guy too for
- 1:06:18Speaker 8: a little bit too, but lamar super Bowl MVP. And
- 1:06:22Speaker 8: the last thing I want to cover is I know
- 1:06:25Speaker 8: there's only one Saturday training camp that's open to the public,
- 1:06:29Speaker 8: and I'm looking to attendant. And if it's possible, I
- 1:06:32Speaker 8: know you guys are going to be busy watching this,
- 1:06:34Speaker 8: watching the practices, and you're gonna have to do your
- 1:06:37Speaker 8: writing and probably get on video afterwards. But if I
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: do end up going, I would like to say pop
- 1:06:43Speaker 8: in and just say what's up to you guys, if
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: that's possible. If not, no big deal, you know.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: But absolutely is it possible. So what my recommendation. I
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: maybe I shouldn't tell everybody the secret of how to
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: crash the media attempt, but.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Yeah I wouldn't, so I simply would.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: My recommendation would be, uh, if you're going to do that,
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: I would say before practice is probably the move. I
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: think after practice we we do get pretty busy, but
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: before practice we could definitely say quick hello for sure.
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: Yeah, if you come over by the media time there,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: that's usually yeah.
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: I'm gonna keep I'm gonna keep that call in like
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: the week before to remind us Yeah, absolutely, pass.
- 1:07:21Speaker 8: Well, I promise do you know what will guys? I
- 1:07:23Speaker 8: call it it almost every week.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: It's been.
- 1:07:24Speaker 8: It's been a little bit crazy. That's why I've been
- 1:07:26Speaker 8: calling it in a couple of weeks. But uh, you know,
- 1:07:29Speaker 8: working family life gets you after a certain point. As Evan,
- 1:07:34Speaker 8: you're you know you're gonna soon find out alex stays
- 1:07:38Speaker 8: single as long as you can.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: But that's all tell him that next week, speaking of
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: that super Bowl projection, we do have a little NFL
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: breaking news, very bold and this kind of goes this
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: kind of goes to my point about the AFC kind
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: of sucking and the haves and the have nots. Jay
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: R Alexander has signed with the Baltimore Ravens.
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: Patty got some reinforcements for you.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: How about that? That's a good move for I. Lamar
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: is gonna get his and you know I was not
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: a Lamar guy at the beginning. My hot take was
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: that Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen were very similar players
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: that did kind of in terms of their ability. That
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: take bode well, not the way I meant it to,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: but it boded well.
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: You were saying that because you thought they were bad.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I thought yes.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: And now they both have m vps.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: Well one has two real MVPs and one has a
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: fraudulent MVP that should have been the other's third. But
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: I digress.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: The Ravens always has to be a backhanding car.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: Are the Ravens? That's not remotely a compliment. It was
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: a fraud MVP. Man, Lamar Jackson's going to be a Marino.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: He's just going to be a career Dan Marino. Are
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: the Ravens the best team in the AFC?
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: They should be?
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they might have been before they signed
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: to Youer Alexander. I'm not like. I don't think I'm
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: being a prisoner of the moment here. But that's a
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: great addition for them.
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: Lamar I Lamar and Josh Allen. I've loved both of them,
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: love watching both of them. I would say Lamar is
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: probably my favorite quarterback in the NFL currently that isn't
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: playing for the Patriots. That that would be where I'm
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: at with Lamar. I just pulled up his playoff box
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: scores and look box scorse gotting stinks. I hate I
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: of all people should not be doing this, but to
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: pick the Ravens to win the Super Bowl, he's gonna
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: have to play better than he thought.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: So I always thought a lot of that was just
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: because he runs so much. He was hurt at the
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: end of the year and he wasn't himself. But they
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: added Derrick Henry last year and that should have made
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: a difference. Yeah, was he better in the playoff game
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: last year? I don't remember he was better.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: He was bad, and then he turned it on and
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: got them back in the game. He threw a really
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: bad pick against Buffalo with just a bad pick. He
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: also fumbled against Buffalo as well, so he had two
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: turnovers against the Bills. I think they were both in
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: the first half if I remember correctly. And then he
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: was literally a Mark Andrews drop two points right away
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: from having that game in overtime. So let's call for
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: what it is. In the second half of the game,
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: he put Baltimore on his back and got them back
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: in the game.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Mahomes has just taken advantage of Allen and Jackson just
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: choking and puking all over themselves in every shot. And
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: in this kid Joe Burrow a load up again.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: Buffalo and Baltimore played in the divisional round, which that's
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: a heavyweight divisional round matchup. You know, they could have
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: had seating gone a different way, but he was just
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: from the box score, he was sixteen for twenty one
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: for one to seventy five and two touchdowns against Pittsburgh
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: in that win, he did rush for eighty one yard.
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: Yeah, that Pittsburgh wind really felt like them being like,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: we know we're the better team, but the Patriots played
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: these games. Let's get in, get out, don't get hurt,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: No need to get flashy.
- 1:10:45Speaker 2: One seventy five inc great, you know, eight point three
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: yards per tempt. So you know, it wasn't It was efficient,
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: but it wasn't. It wasn't a high volume game for Lamar.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: And then in the Buffalo playoff game he was eighteen
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: for twenty five for two fifty four, two touchdowns, one pick.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: He only ran it six times six for thirty nine yards,
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: and then he had the probable lost as well. So
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: I want Lamar to win to a super Bowl, maybe
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: more than any quarterback that's not named Drake May in
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: the NFL. I'd love to see it, but he's gonna
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: have to be a little bit better that and I
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: hate that, like I hate that narrative. I hate all
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: of that. But that's just the in his case, it's
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: probably an accurate conversation.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: I just it. It's it's wide opening again. I mean,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: the Chiefs are the Chiefs. You can't rule them out,
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: but they've lost talent. The Ravens and Bills continue to
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: choke and puke all over themselves in big moments. The
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Texans took a step back last year and we're CJ
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: strad at and he's now got this with's his shoulder
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: issue right, that's limited him throwing in camp. Who's next?
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: Is it the Steelers?
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: No?
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: Is it the Dolphins?
- 1:11:50Speaker 6: No?
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I'm just looking at the second place team. Is that
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: the Chargers at the Broncos. I don't think so. The
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: Chargers on paper should be, but they won't.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: So the other question that I and we're kind of
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: talked about the Sun Pew and Patty kind of jogged
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: my brain about it.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: I don't even think there's a take there beyond just
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: like it's not a good but with.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: Drake May and our expectations for Drake May, just talking
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: about his entire career now, Yes, as a whole you can't. Obviously,
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: you can't use Brady like Brady as being the bar
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: is a bar that will never be reached again. It's
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: it's unfair to everybody. We're taken. We have to have
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: a different bar for what is deemed a good career,
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: What is deemed that he's you know, he passes because
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of still and I understand it.
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: You know, won one game last year. There's still there's
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: a lot of people out there that still aren't ready
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: to anoint him like the franchise quarterback, you know, the guy. Yeah,
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: but what is what's our bar for him being the guy?
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: Because for other teams that don't have a Tom Brady
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: in their history, the bar for being the guy is
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: very different than what we know it is around here.
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: So you ring up the Chargers, Justin Herbert is the guy.
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: There's no doubt that Justin Herbert's a great talent and
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: a great quarterback.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: You know, not seeing those like Burner Twitter accounts saying
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: like per sources that definitely don't exist. There's gonna be
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: like a Alex Smith Patrick Mahomes thing with Justin Herbert
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: and Trey Lance. No, if anybody's gonna do that. It
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: is hard.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: So Justin Herbert is the undisputed quote unquote guy in LA.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: He has not won a playoff game yet. He's owing
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: to in the playoffs and what I want to say,
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: two playoff appearances in five years, he's owing to in
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: two playoff games. He's never won a playoff game. Do
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: any of us sit here in question whether or not
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: Justin Herbert's great? No, but that's if that's the bar,
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: he's not really passing it, right. I'll give you another
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: one that I kind of thought of in the Drake
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: mayprism just because of the raw talent, Like Trevor Lawrence
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: is another one to me, tons of raw talent, tons
- 1:14:00Speaker 2: of ability, but has either not sniffed the playoffs or
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: had really hasn't had much success in the playoffs. I
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: think you had that one playoff win that was over Herbert, right,
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: the big comeback, that was a couple of years ago.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: So I guess the point that I'm trying to make
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: with Drake May is like Justin Herbert Trevor Lawrence are
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: the guy undisputed. You had to pay those guys and
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: in like two or three years from now, if Drake
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: May's career trajectory follows a similar trajectory as those players.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: He's gonna be a sixty million dollar year quarterback, yep.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: And I don't think you can second guess that, like
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: you have to give him that contract, right, like yes.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: So that's the world we live in now with these quarterbacks,
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: where that bar of like it's really it's black or white.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: It's either yes you are or no you're not, and
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: there's no in between. There's no more like middling quarterback contract.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: It sort of came back a little bit like this
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: Sam Darnold deal in Seattle's like kind of intriguing for that,
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: but for the most part, you're talking about you're either
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: playing this guy fifty million plus or you're not paying
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: him and you're back in the carousel. And I just
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: wonder where the Patriots will fall with Drake May if
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: it's similar to some of these other guys, If we're
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: being realistic about where they're going, and he's not going
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: all of a sudden turned into like Mahomes or Jalen Hurts,
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: who's in the super Bowl every other year, You're gonna
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: have a very expensive quarterback that I think a lot
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: of people, especially people on like your station will be
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: like it isn't worth it.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: You just hope that they can put the ross around him.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: It's just an interesting conversation because our brains are obviously
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: we had Brady. Brady also was very team friendly with
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: the contracts that he took. The way the quarterback market
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: is going. Now, do you think that Trevor Lawrence should
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: be making fifty million a year?
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: You know, my view on these contracts, it's it's all
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: kind of fugazi, it really is. Because when's the last
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: time Evan, a player at any position, but especially quarterback,
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: got a contract and people were like, yeah, you know,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: he's a good player, but they're probably playing paying him
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: a little too much money. When's the last time that
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: happened in the NFL? I know, it just happened with
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: the Red Sox.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: Unfortunately, some people might think that that's the case with
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: these guys though, like is Trevor is Trevor Lawrence worth?
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: But when you look at the alternative, like he's a
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: good quarterback.
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, right? And Kyler Murray the other one, Okay, but
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: like quarterback.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Two or three years after signing the nobody's saying Kyler
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Murray's overpaid and the cardinal should have signed him. Nobody's
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: saying that, And that's coming for me, who's not a
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: big Kyler Murray guy like Mahomes. When the Mahomes contract
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: came out, it was, oh my god, this is gonna
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: change sports. This is generational, this is legendary. What is
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: two years later and he's the Is he even a
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: top ten.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: Highest paid He signed a Brady contract if we're being honest,
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: like he signed him.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: No, he was one of the highest page.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: Yeah, but it was it was always below the number
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: that if you projected it out of way, the market
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: was going.
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson wins back to back MVPs, gets that big contract,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Oh my god, is he really worth that much money? Now,
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: Dak Prescott's making more than him. Look, it's not my money,
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: so I get it. But also, like all of these contracts,
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: the way the cap goes up, with the TV deals
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: and all that, none of them really end up being
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: the albatross we all think they're gonna be in the moment. Now,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to renegotiate it and players get upset,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: and that's part of it. But again, the alternative is
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: not having the player. So if the players good, usually
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: it ends up being a good contract. I don't remember
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the last time the NFL a good players signed a
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: bad contract. There are players we thought we were gonna
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: be good, that we thought were gonna be good that
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: weren't in the contract becomes bad, but that's because the
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: player isn't performing. With how flexible the NFL salary cap is,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: both in terms of how can maneuver it and how
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: much changes year to year, it's really really hard in
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: this league, specifically to have a good player on a
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: bad contract, especially at that position, when you consider the alternative.
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: I just keep looking at all these quarterback contracts and look,
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: we're only in year two of Drake may where a
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: couple of years away from this being not a problem.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: But how many are truly bad? How many do you
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: look at and look, you could look at the Daniel
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Jones contract and say that was a bad contract, he
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: was a bad quarterback. How many do you truly look
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: at and say, he is a good quarterback, but they
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: would have been better off not paying him. Is there
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: any of those contracts that you can confidently say that
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: about Rock Party? But is brock Purty good quarterback's fine?
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: Is brock Purty a starting caliber quarterback. Yeah, okay. So
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: there's one example, and that's your boy, Kyle Shanahan. So
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: your guy, your genius, signed the worst quarterback contract in
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: the league. Well, there's a reason I'm saying loudly to
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: make surebody hears this. Your football genius signed the worst
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: contract in the league. Is that what you're telling me.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: I don't know if it's the worst contract in the league.
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: Well, it's the one bad quarterback contract according to you,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: and that's the most important position. This is my point. Like,
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: and I will leave room in this. I will leave
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: room in this for injuries, like I if a guy
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: gets hurt a lot, that's another conversation. But again, to
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: find a good quarterback that's on a bad contract and
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: not well, I think he sucks and they should have
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: sign him. So then you think he's a bad quarterback.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: A quarterback that you think is good that is on
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: a bad contract, it's hard to find that.
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: It is hard to find. I'll pull it up and
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: we'll take the next call and maybe we can figure
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: it out. All right, Jeff is in LA. What's up? Jeff?
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: Hey, Ivan, Alex, thanks for tating to call. Two questions
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: I had for you. With the reported hirings of the
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: expansion of the team's analytics department, what are some tangible
- 1:19:52Speaker 6: benefits or benefits that you expect to see in the
- 1:19:54Speaker 6: next few years to bring the team more online with
- 1:19:56Speaker 6: other franchises. And secondly, in an effort to help injury
- 1:20:00Speaker 6: situations due to an expanded schedule and like the lack
- 1:20:03Speaker 6: of player development that we see across the league, was
- 1:20:06Speaker 6: wondering what you thought about this rule change suggestion. All
- 1:20:09Speaker 6: fifty three players on the active roster on game day
- 1:20:12Speaker 6: are active, but to create parody, the amount of elevation
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: from the practice squad each week correspond to the number
- 1:20:18Speaker 6: of players who are ruled out due to injury. Thanks
- 1:20:21Speaker 6: for great content, guys, and thanks very much for partic Nicole.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: Thanks Jeff. That's an interesting proposal, because the reason why
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: they have the way it is with the forty six
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: or forty seven guys and then the inactives is so
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: that you don't have to have an injured player active,
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: right Like, if the guy's injured, you can just put
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: him on an active So he's saying that would then
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: free up an elevation from the practice squad, so that.
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're gonna have a lot of teams getting
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: weird with injuries on a week to week basis. I
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: just think making all fifty three active makes sense. Yeah,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Like you could just leave it at that and then
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: you still have the two practice squad elevations, right, So
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: I get the issue that in the past, before all
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: this practice squad menuitia came into play, was that then
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: you could, in theory, have a team that has like
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: fifty one healthy players going up against a team that
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: has fifty three healthy players. Right, So now when you
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: with the inactives, you in theory will get everybody down
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: to the same number of healthy players. I think between
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: fifty five players it should be close enough.
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that. Now to the first question.
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: It's a really good question about the analytics department, A
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: classic catch twenty two question, because I know, uh, I
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: don't know how exactly you feel about them expanding their
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: analytics department. So just on the on the surface, like
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: I you know, first and foremost, you know, where do
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: you stand on this? Because you know I love it,
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: So where do you stand on it?
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: I look, analytics is this wide umbrella, right, And I
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: think you often assume that I hate all of it.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: And that's because you only talk about the one thing
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: when it's like a.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Really tangible numbers. I am okay with the tangible numbers,
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: and that can mean multiple things. That can mean statistics,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: but also like when it comes to player evaluation, player
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: tracking data, miles per hour, that sort of thing. Right,
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: I'm in on that, and they haven't used a ton
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: of that, and I'm all for using more of that.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: That I'm good with when it comes to like injuries
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: and that kind of thing, I'm good with. What I
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: don't want is well, the expected EPA DVOA on this
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: play tells us we should make this decision. So turn
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: off your brain and make the decision, because the spreadsheet
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: says So that's what I don't want. And based on
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: what Rabel said last week about analytics, he doesn't want
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: it either. I think, I you know, do I love
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: that they're going more to the maths side, know, because
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: that's just how I feel about sports. Do I think
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Rabel is going to keep it where it belongs and
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: not allow it to spill into areas that it doesn't.
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: Yes. He basically said that you want the football jock
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: to bury the nerd in the locker every once in
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: a while when he needs to be to.
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: Make sure everybody knows their place. That's what you want,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: and he said. Rabel's asked, are.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: You're the ghost behind your computer and let the football guys?
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: Rabels asked, are the analytics guy is going to be
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: in your ear when it comes to making you know,
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: should we go for this on fourth down? And Rabel said, no,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: that'll be me in stretch talking about the analytics and
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: make sure he said that, you know, we'll talk to
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: those guys during the week and we'll see what they have,
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: but it's gonna be him in stretch making a football
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: decision in that moment. The analytics might help inform it,
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: but they are not going to make the decision.
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: Fine, So we talk about this all the time on
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: and off the air, and we talk about it a
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: lot with the Celtics too, because in the Red Sox,
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: but Celtics really.
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: The Red Sox are on a whole other level with
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: us as we're learning.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: But I I know how to put words in your mouth,
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: but I my general feel on your take on this
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: is that you don't want them impacting play style like
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: you don't like the Celtics Your issue with them is
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: that the nerds say to shoot three, so they shoot
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: a bunch of three.
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: I don't want it being the lead driver of dictating
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: play style and get in game decision making. If you
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: want to use it as a guide and have it
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: be one of multiple things you're looking at to inform you, fine,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: it should not be the be all, end all.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: You don't want the Patriots head coach and this is
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: different but similar. You don't want the Patriots head coach
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: at the owners Meeting saying the most important stat is
- 1:24:10Speaker 2: past EPA right, which is what Ben Johnson said in
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: the Owners Meeting.
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: The most important status points. So however you get them,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: I don't care if it looks pretty or not. And
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: however you keep them off the board, I don't care
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: if it looks pretty or not.
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: So I'm not I'm not too concerned about the Patriots
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: using for lack of using like public data that like
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: EPA or no love Aaron Schatz mean it DVA. Yeah,
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: I'm not worried about them using those metrics because the
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: people that they've hired in the way that I think
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: they're heading is that they want to create their own metrics.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: They want it, So it's not necessarily going to be EPA,
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: d VA or whatever. But I think the main thing
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: that they're trying to do, and this is just a hunch,
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: is side information just a hunch. The main thing that
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: most teams try to do now is they use this
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: in personnel to place value on players, not necessarily to say, oh,
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: when we're in this first you know formation, with this
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: personnel grouping, you know, twelve personnel against base defense, we're
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: averaging you know, our EPA is plus two point five
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: per play, So we should try to do that more, right, Like,
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: I don't think that that's where football in general is headed.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: I think where they are headed though, is free agency.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: How do we and the Patriot like Bill did this?
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: So this isn't new So okay, so you're walking a
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: fine line here because what we just went through with
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: the Red Sox is the grandiose version of each player
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: is worth an exact dollar amount. We're going to measure
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: that dollar amount against the contract. And this goes back
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: to what we were talking about with the quarterbacks. I
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: don't want to go too far in the baseball discussion,
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: but like, if our metric tells us that this is
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: a two hundred and ninety eight million dollar player, and
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: we would have to pay him three hundred million. We
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: do not want that player, and that, to me is
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: a dangerous road to go down, because you do have
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: to overpay elite players at times, whether the math tells
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: you to or not. That's how you get good players
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: in the building. I'm not saying the Patriots are going
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: to do that. I think Rabel's smart enough not to.
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: But what you're describing is what has become super charged
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: and run a muck through baseball.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Sure, So I think there's a big element of that
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: in terms of player evaluation. So I whether that's value,
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: whether that's player tracking, whether that's you know, any sort
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: of advanced scouting, type of stuffy and analytical scouting. Like,
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: there's the personnel side of this, I think is going
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: to be a main driver of what they're going to
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: be doing.
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: I like it.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: For player this is going to I'm probably splitting heres here,
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: hairs here. If they're a user for a player of
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: value evaluation, fine, for player valuation, now, I think you're
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: going down a slopery slope.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: Okay, So I think that there's going to do a
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: lot of that with personnel. Now, I do think that
- 1:27:06Speaker 2: there is a lot of data, and this data usually
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: they they have a present to packet to a coach,
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: the head coach and the coaching staff every week of
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: analytical data about the opponent, scouting the opponent, and for
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: all thirty two. It's up to the coaching staff how
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: much you look at it and how much you done
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: what tendencies?
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: So like that's not even doing that for years.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: Sure, but I think this is yes, but more modernized, right,
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: so we're not necessarily just talking about splitting grouping. How
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: often are they an eleven or twelve?
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: And you can get is expected with tendencies.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: I don't think it's about expected. Uh No, I would say,
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: you know, there's things like heat maps are becoming popular.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: Where does the quarterback funnel?
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: The floor? That's tangible, date, that's tangible.
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: That's fine, right, So like this, yeah, to inbreakers in
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: the middle of the field, and this is you could
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: watch the film and come to that conclusion, but you
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: could also see it in like the hot spots on
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: a heat map.
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: Well, so I would hope they do both because there's
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: things that the heat map is not going to show
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: you that the film is going to show you, right,
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: how is he it does when he you know, moves
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: in the pocket, where's his arm slot? When he throws
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: to certain places? What routes? You know, you catch a
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: ball in between the hashes four yards down field from
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, there's what four or five different
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: routes that could get you to that spot, and he
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: might throw those different routes differently depending on the coverage.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: So it's your point, like how much how little? I
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: don't think Rabel's gonna look at that packet as a bible.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: Might use it, but I don't think he's gonna look
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: at it as the be all end all, which is fine,
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: Like it's a tool, it just shouldn't be the tool.
- 1:28:50Speaker 2: Okay, So let me ask you how you feel about this.
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: What if.
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: There is a cornerback, Yeah, and the data is able
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: to extrapulate how that cornerback fares on every route when
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: he's targeted, go route, post crosser, corner, drag, incut, yeah,
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: all of it. And the data is just like heavily
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: telling you that this cornerback is burnt toast when you
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: throw a go ball over his head.
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: So, I you know, how's that there's still more information there.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: How who's tracking that? How's it being tracked? Is he
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: toast because they're shading safety help and maybe you know
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: they have a good safety and okay, well he's getting burnt,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: but if they're gonna put the safety back, we don't
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: want to worry about it.
- 1:29:42Speaker 3: Or is it?
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: Because is it? Is the data skewed because in this
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: one game he was struggling this one receiver or this
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: type of receiver that maybe we don't have, Like again, okay,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: you show me that I'm not gonna use so here,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: I guess here's where I'm at. So if I were
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: the coach and I were showing that right, the right
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: answer is not Okay, let's throw a million go balls
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: at this guy. It's get me the cutups of all
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: the go balls. Let's see why this is happening. And
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: do we have the assets on our roster to be
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: able to take advantage of this? Yes or no? Because
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: if you have it, I think that's exactly okay. But
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: I think there are some people and maybe they're not
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: really the coaches, but I think there's some people who
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: look at it, analytics who look at that and don't
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: go to that second step and say this guy sucks
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: against the go ball bombs away and that's not the
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: process and that never will be the process, and map
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: can never fill in that grind, that that that groundwork
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: in the middle.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: That to me is analytics at its best, is exactly
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: how you just.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Do you think everybody uses it at its best? No,
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: the answer is no, and that's my problem.
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: No, but I would say football is still holding out
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: the best in football?
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: Do you think everybody uses it at the best for football?
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: And by the way, I against major everything that Vrabel
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: said last week, I was actually relatively encouraged by when
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: he was talking about analytics, which was we're gonna basically
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: summed up it. I don't you know, maybe I'm misinterpreting,
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: but my interpretation was we wanted to have more of
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: it as a tool. But at the end of the day,
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: it's me and Stretch and we're making football decisions good
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: in terms of like going for it and right, yeah,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: and I will. I think you can extrapolate that too.
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: I remember that thing a couple of years ago, where
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: like the Browns was, it was the coach before Stefanski,
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: like the the game plan had to be turned in
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: every Friday, so the analytics department could approve it.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: Do you remember that sounds like a Browns thing like
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: that is wrong? Now, I think what what dared?
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: But I don't think the Patriots would ever do that.
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: I think what you're hoping for in a dream world
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: is that the analytics department find some anomalies within the
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: data of this team's bad at defending this. They run
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: a lot of that, you know, that kind of stuff,
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: and then the coaches then take that and say and
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: put content behind it, like is this real? To your
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: point about Goballs, is that corner. We're four weeks into
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: the season and he's bad against Goballs, but he faced
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: Jamar Chase aj Brown Tyreek kill, right, So then we're
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: throwing that out that's not real.
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: That's I just think there's some analytics people. I don't
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: know that these are the people working for the team,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: but just the people in the football community that you
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: talk to that get really upset when their information is
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: not used and they don't like the context being added
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: because they think it's devaluing the value of analytics.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: So I don't think that you're you should be too
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: worried about the game to game stuff. If you're gonna
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: be worried for you. I'm not worried about any of it,
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: but if you're gonna be worried, it's the personnel side
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: of it.
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: So I'm worried and I'm encouraged. Like the player tracking
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: stuff great, Like I wouldn't hate if they did more
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: that don't go as far as the rams and like
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: not bother to interview the players because I think the
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: person matters to and what happens between them some draft
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: matters rorbly, So I mean it's gonna catch up to
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: them eventually.
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: You got it.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Well, But they meet with the players later, right or
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: do they just not do meeting at all?
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: They don't do meetings.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: See, that's going to catch up eventually. They've gotten lucky,
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: that's going to catch up to them. They do homework, like,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: don't get they know all about the player? Yeah, I
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: think you got to sit down a room with somebody
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: to get to know him.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: That don't mean they know like I mean like if
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: they was a major off the field, right, they're talking.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: To coaches and things like that. But also just I
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: think that will catch up to them eventually. I think
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: it's an anomaly that that hasn't burned them yet. But
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: like the player tracking stuff, fine again, evaluation, sure, valuation
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: is where you lose me.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: I think that it's really important for this team. I'm not.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: I'm not really. I don't think it's really important from
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: a game plan perspective, like an in season perspective. Let
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: the football coaches be football coaches. Like they can see
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: that the guy's bat at the goball because they're watching
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: the all twenty two. They don't need they don't need
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: a nerd to tell I.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: Don't want this to replace what was it? Orlando pace?
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: Like they figured out this was an old bill thing
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: that like when he was in a two point stance,
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: it was a pass, and he's in a three point stance,
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: it was a run like ninety nine percent of the time, right, Like,
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: definitely watching the tape, figure that out. When this wide
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: receiver's left foot first, he's running this route. When he's
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: right for first, he's running that route.
- 1:34:07Speaker 2: You can find all that out. Like, I have full
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: faith in this coach.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: He's that. I don't consider analytics at all. No, that's
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: just grinding tape. That's coaching.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: I have full faith in this coaching staff to go
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: game plan, you know an opponent, like, I'm not worried
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: about using Matt there the personnel side of things to
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: me that they've been pretty behind the times with two things.
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: One the in game player tracking data, you know, the
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: chip in the pads, Like I didn't like a couple
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: of years ago when I heard I'm not gonna name names,
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: when I heard certain people in the front office talking
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: about putting stock in the forty yard dash, I just
- 1:34:46Speaker 2: don't love it. I get that it's uniform. I get
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: that it's been around forever. I get that everybody has
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: to run the same forty so in here you're stacking
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: likes with likes. But football is played with pads on.
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: It's played between the lines. It's not a track meet.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: You can and you can use both just because like
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: you can still use the forty and the player tracking.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: I think there's room for both. I don't think it
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: has to be one of the other.
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: So I like that the track and data is coming
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: more towards the modern side of the way of doing things.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: The other thing that I really like about it is
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: the predictive stuff that they have in terms of injuries.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: I think can be really so the injury stuff's fascinating
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: and that goes way over my head the.
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: Sports science, if you will.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: So that's like actual medicine, that is somewhere where math belongs.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: I have no problem.
- 1:35:34Speaker 2: Very cool, very good. I think you can tell a
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: lot about you know, is this player's ne gonna last?
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: Is something?
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: Is there some wear and tear on his shoulder as
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: a quarterback? Like anything?
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:35:46Speaker 2: And I think that's all important. So I think that
- 1:35:49Speaker 2: that can help. And you know, you always bring up
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: the Browns on the other side of the spectrum of
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: a team that's used a lot of math that hasn't
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: worked out. I always use the Eagles because they just
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: won the Super Bowl. The Lions are also at the
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: forefront of this Baltimore Buffalo. A lot of really good teams,
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: a lot of really bad teams are probably have big aa.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: Thing with this. And we this comes up a lot,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: and we talk about the Celtics. Yes, did Joe Mizzoula's
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: style like last year in the win title? Did that style?
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: Did that philosophy work because the math was so good
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: that it was just unstoppable? Or did it work because
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: he had a super team and no matter how they played,
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: they were probably gonna win, right Like the same with
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: the Eagles, or the Eagles great because their math was
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: crunched so tightly and the numbers were so perfect. Or
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: did the Eagles win because they had an absolute nightmare
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: of refront seven a dominant offensive line?
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: But how did moxcelln skill players?
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: My rebuttal to that, though, is I'm more interested in
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: the personnel side and how did the Eagles build that monster?
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: They built it through Howie Roseman and having a great
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: front office and great general managing. So it's like a
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: chicken or the egg thing, right, Like, the first thing
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: that had to happen was they had to acquire the
- 1:37:01Speaker 2: players that were to make the super team that they.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: Have player evaluation, fine, that's all.
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: That's where when it bleeds into the game because their
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: analytics department saw like an inefficiency in the Kansas City
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: offense or defense that they won the Super Bowl because
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: of that. I'm saying that Howie Roseman's probably the best
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: drafter in the NFL going right now, He's on an
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: absolute heater, and I think a lot of the reason
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: why he's uh so hot right now is because he's
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: using all the information.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: But there's there's more to it, But again it's not
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: to be all end all because again, if just using
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: all the data was how you built a good team,
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: the Browns use all the data, what's the difference between
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: the Browns and the Eagles.
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: It's a good question. I maybe the Eagles just use
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: it better.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Well. I think there's probably just some inherent football IQ
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: that comes with that.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I would agree with that, and I think with
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: you know, the thing with Howie that I think separates
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: him too from a lot of other people is, you know,
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: he the way that they value you picks is maybe
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: a little bit differently.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: And that's something else is the math just telling them
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: to draft from the SEC because I could have told
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: you that with that an equation.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: No, you know, how do they get Kunon Mitchell kind
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: of get you know.
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Queen Mitchell was a consensus first round pick.
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: Yeah, but like Quinnon, Mitchell's went to Toledo, Like, that's
- 1:38:17Speaker 2: not SEC.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: He's a consensus first round pick though, yeah he's not.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: They found some diamonds in the rough. He's not exactly
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: diamond in the rough.
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: I'm not saying he's a dim in the rough. I'm
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: just saying they have hit fairways for like five six
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: years now at the top of the draft, you cannot
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: say the same thing about this organization.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: So no, But again to go back to the Browns,
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: like they're both using the data.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: So I don't think I'm not trying to excuse you know,
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: the Paldi to Pedesta's the world and all that. I'm
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: sure that they could. You know, there's other issues with
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: the Browns, but sometimes with with at least with the
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: team like Cleveland. Like my two cents on it is
- 1:38:53Speaker 2: that maybe there's some medaling going on from other influences,
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Like are the people that are hired to draft football
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: players actually given the freedom to just go ahead and
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: draft the football players in Cleveland?
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Who's meddling? Is it the owner medal or the math
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: people meddling?
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: Maybe I don't know. Their GM is a math guy,
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: so Andrew Berry is grew up in the math.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: We're just gonna keep going in circles on this.
- 1:39:20Speaker 2: I I like to have these conversations, not to argue
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: with you, but yeah, b I also like to have
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: these conversations because every time we talk about analytics and football,
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: the fourth down decision making stuff, that term.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: Has become way too much of an term. It encompasses
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: too much now, right.
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: So I want to bring about out these other avenues
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: of what the department does on an NFL team, because
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: that is such a small, small sliver of what their
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: role is in an NFL organization.
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: It's not, but it's not because those decisions are so impactful,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: like how many hours they spend on it over the
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: course of a year. The size of the pie might
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: be small, the impact it ultimately has on the football team,
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: the slice of the pie is much larger. So I
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: don't think you can say that that's a small role.
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: It might not be what they spend most of their
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: time on, but it makes a very significant impact, and
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: that itself might be part of the problem for some teams.
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: I don't think every team follows it, so I think
- 1:40:17Speaker 2: some teams are influenced by it.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: For the teams that use it, it's a it's a
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: big part of it, I think. I think it doesn't
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: sound like the Patriots an't going to are gonna use
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: it a ton which good.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: I think they'll be. I think they'll it'll inform them.
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: I don't think that they think it.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: Will be one item on the list of things that
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: informs them, and I don't think it will be any
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: greater than any other item, which is ultimately all At
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: this point, I think as much as I can ask,
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: as Felger says. Felger says all the time about analytics.
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: We've lost the war. The anti analytics people have lost
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: the war. But it doesn't mean that we should stop fighting.
- 1:40:45Speaker 2: Let's get back to the phones. Kaylee is in Boston.
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: What's up, Kaylee?
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: Hi, guys, long time, first time. I have a couple
- 1:40:53Speaker 3: of quick questions. First, I was wondering how has Jared
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: Wilson looked during the off season? How do you see
- 1:40:58Speaker 3: it playing out with him for subscribery? And then I
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: actually have just a quick question about the David Andrews podcast. Alex,
- 1:41:05Speaker 3: you came in really hot today. Is everything okay between
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: you guys?
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: Between who.
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: The two of you?
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: Alex and oh oh yeah, Evan, Yeah, No, I'm fine.
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: Oh always always. That's like some like you know, brotherly yeah,
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: brotherly teasing all the time.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: Because what's gonna happen is because we do this every week,
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: like we talk about this has been a thing for
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: most of the off season. We spend the first ten
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: minutes and this was more related. But like we did
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: the Celtics a couple of weeks ago, we did Madden
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: a couple weeks ago, Like we spend ten minutes off
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: the top of the show talking about something that's not
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: the show, and then there's a bunch of YouTube comments
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: blaming Evan for it. So when my counter to that
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: now has been and I like that we open the
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: show that way. But I get you guys don't. So
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: it's just kind of let's get through it and let's
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: get to what the people really want. It's more of that.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: I'm just trying to save it and I just like
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: teasing Alex that's it, and I'm trying to save him
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: from himself.
- 1:41:57Speaker 3: There you go, very good stuff, guys.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: Thank you, thanks for the call. Caley, appreciate it.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: Dot you mean, is everything okay between me and David Andrews?
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: And like, I hope so I know he's already out.
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: No, Like what did I say, somebody find a clip
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: someway I was thinking about the other day, Like, I
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: don't remember, that's not a guy you're critical of. I
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: remember saying something a couple of years ago. I think
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: this was on this show with you where we were
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: like breaking down a screenplay and the blocking was messed up,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: and we were like, either David Andrews went the wrong
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: way or whoever the other player was went the wrong way.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: And I think my take was literally, I'm just gonna
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: blindly sign with David Andrews. He seems like like if
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: he made the decision, he probably made the right decision.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: I think the other player was like a rookie, like
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: late round draft pick or something. I'm like, we all
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: know who made the right decision.
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: Well, I think that I succeeded. If Kayley thought that
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: we were actually feuding about this, then I succeeded in that.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: Jared Wilson though we haven't seen much of Jared Wilson.
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: He's been I think Mike Reeves called an undisclosed injury,
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: so they're not even sourced disclosing the injury. So something
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: he is going through an injury, uh, you know, coming
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: back from an injury, I should say.
- 1:43:03Speaker 7: So.
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: He didn't get to see a ton of him in
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: the spring. He was working off to the side a lot.
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: They would like do team on one field and then
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: him and Anwenu and Viderien Lowe. A lot of the time.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: It was sometimes Morgan Moses was there early on in
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: the in the spring.
- 1:43:17Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: They were doing drills you know against air, like you know,
- 1:43:20Speaker 2: just pas sets and stuff like that. So hopefully we
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: see more of Jared Wilson moving forward, because I I
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: am not ready to call any competition on the interior,
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: like you know, left guard, even center, yeah, until I
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: see Jared Wilson in.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: Pat And Mike Gravell even said that, like he was
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: asked about the guard competition, He's like, yeah, we really
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: can't make any decisions till the pads come on. So
- 1:43:41Speaker 1: the only thing we learned, especially left guard, I think
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: center is more of a traditional competition, right, Yeah, it's
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: Garrett Bradburrig's Jared Wilson. Who's better? The only thing I
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: came away from the spring thinking about left guard it's
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: wide open. Yeah, you could list five actually wrote this
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: this morning on ninety eight five sports dot Com. I
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: don't remember how many a head on there, but you
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: can list like six guys that realistically could be the
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: weak ones starting left card, someone more realistic than others.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: But I mean, if we want to run through it
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: real quick, right, you can make a case for Cole Strange,
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: make case for City.
- 1:44:11Speaker 2: So I think Cole Strange has the inside track, but.
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: Like I'm lightly putting that in pencil.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: We're we're just out of the thing.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: But right now, if I had to bet on the
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: week one starting left card, it would be Cold Strange.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: But I'm not like, I don't feel great about it.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: But you can make an argument for Strange for so
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: those are probably the two big ones.
- 1:44:32Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: You can make an argument for Kaden Wallace, Yeah, can
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: make an argument for Laden Robinson. You can make an
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: argument for Tyree Robinson. You can make an argument for
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: Jared Wilson, you can make an argument for Jack Conley.
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: That's seven players. You couldn't made an argument for West
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Whites before he retired.
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: I really feel like it's Cole Strange, yeah, Cayden Wallace,
- 1:44:53Speaker 2: Jared Wilson in terms of not City, so no, not
- 1:44:58Speaker 2: yet should be City. So just in terms of what
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: I feel like is going to happen now based of
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: what we've seen, right, Cold.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: Stranger of the field, Cold Strange. Oh, I'm taking the
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: field just on the number.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: Well yeah, I mean he could get hurt, so I
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: guess they're it's not even getting hurt.
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: Like I think the percentage Cole straight If I like
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: percentage wise, right, who do I think is most likely
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: start a left card? Cold Strange would have the highest percentage,
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: but that percentage is maybe like twenty twenty five. Yeah,
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: so I'm taking the field.
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: All right. Let's get to Alex in Atlanta. What's up, Alex?
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: Alex you there. I can't have three Alexes on the
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: show today if but call us back and we'll get
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: you on the air for still on Alex, Let's get
- 1:45:38Speaker 2: to some of these emails. So we haven't got to
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: the EMAILSCA. We've had a lot of calls today. I
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: appreciate that a June eighteenth show just bringing in the calls.
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: I really appreciate that.
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: I feel like June eighteenth used to always be my
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: last day of school, Like this date is just burned
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: into my brain. Is like every time I see June eighteenth,
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: like I just have a Pavlovian instinct to be like,
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: oh nice, June eighteenth. And I think it's because it
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: was always the last day of school.
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: See. I'm that way with June seventeenth because of the Celtics.
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: Two championships won on June seventeen.
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but one of tho.
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: Ways only a year ago, so that can't be that
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: trained yet. But June seventeenth, it's a Celtics day and
- 1:46:09Speaker 2: it's six one seven. I always just say it is
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: six one seven day. I always associate you in eighteenth
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: with the last day of school. Now, what doesn't get
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: talked about that with that, with it being the Celtics day.
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: They also lost game seven of the twenty ten five
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: three on six seventeen, so that one, for young Evan
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: was probably one of the worst sports losses of my lifetime.
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: And I think was the I don't think the Bruins
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: won on six seventeen, but was the Bruins parade on
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: six seventeen?
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: Might have been? Might have been? All right, here's a
- 1:46:38Speaker 2: question from josh was the eighteenth Oh there you go.
- 1:46:41Speaker 2: Here's a question from Joshua, which I think is a
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: catch twenty two kind of question. He remembered. He asked,
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: how much do the Patriots you how much will the
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: Patriots use no huddle this year? And he thinks that
- 1:46:54Speaker 2: it would be a good fit with Drake may So.
- 1:46:57Speaker 2: I think the interesting thing about them potentially use a
- 1:47:00Speaker 2: lot of no huddle is the return of what has
- 1:47:03Speaker 2: notoriously been called the NASCAR package, which is the one
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: word association package that they have so that they can
- 1:47:10Speaker 2: run a no huddle and they can simply yell, you know,
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: Michael Jordan, and then everybody knows what the play is.
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: Josh McDaniel's also very that haas right, yes, yes, I'm
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: giving away the playbook now. Josh McDaniel's very notorious for
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: naming plays after NBA stars Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, like
- 1:47:35Speaker 2: those types of guys. And so the the reason why
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: I bring that up is that that's forty chess. So
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: if you really think they'll have a temple, they'll have
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: a no huddle. Every team has to have one, right
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: because if you get into a two minute situation where
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: you have to be no huddle, you have to be
- 1:47:53Speaker 2: no huddle. You don't have a choice but to truly
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: run it as like a core of your offense, like
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: not in like a situation type of thing. I think
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: you need to have like a PhD level grasp of
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: the offense as a whole. And I'm not sure if
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: they'll be there yet at the beginning of the season.
- 1:48:08Speaker 2: I don't know if this is the year for that
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: I guess is what I'm getting at. If this whole
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: entire setup is the same in twenty twenty six as
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: it is in twenty twenty five, it's McDaniels, it's for able.
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: It's may like maybe then you could do like what
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: they used to do, you know, twenty ten Patriots, twenty
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: eleven Patriots, when Josh McDaniels met with Chip Kelly and
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: like really installed some tempo into the offense. But for now,
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: I think that that's more there's one minute left, no timeouts,
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: tie game, we got a no huddle, right, It's not
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: necessarily something that you're just doing in the middle of
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: the flow of the game, if that makes sense.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: Yeah, McDaniel's also kind of been all over the place
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: with that, Like they'll be random stretches where he's super
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: in no huddle, and then they really won't use it
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: for a while, and then they'll go back to it.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: So I don't know what to expect on that one.
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Like that could go anyway, but like you said, I
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: think it's more likely, you know, if this all works
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: out and you're keeping a lot of the same players
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: together next year, than the likelihood goes up.
- 1:49:01Speaker 2: Sure, So this is another interesting question here from Dennis,
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: so I guess I mentioned this briefly or we mentioned
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: this briefly about the overlap between Josh mcdaniels's offense and
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: Brian dables offense. It's the same offense.
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: I think Diggs mentioned that.
- 1:49:13Speaker 2: Yep, Diggs played in Brian Dables offense of course in Buffalo,
- 1:49:17Speaker 2: And there's a lot of similarities. It's both Ernard Perkins
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: play verbiage and all that kind of stuff. So that
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: doesn't mean that they call the plays the same way
- 1:49:25Speaker 2: in terms of like the actual words that they use.
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: It's just it's run the same way in terms of
- 1:49:31Speaker 2: the the mainly I would say protections and cadence like
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: it's it's kind of just structured the same way, is
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: the best way I can put it. So there's a
- 1:49:42Speaker 2: lot of similarities. I would say. The main similarity though,
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: from what I understand at least about it, is the
- 1:49:47Speaker 2: protection calls. Like Brady said it was some let's go
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: or something like that, or he had an interview with
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: Josh Allen where he said that he could like recognize
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: Josh Allen's audibles and his protection calls because it's the
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: verbiage as what the Patriots use. So there's a lot
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: of overlap between those two systems, between McDaniels and Brian Dable.
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: So the question, I guess, uh, okay, I get it.
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: The question that Dennis then asks on top of that
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: is who would you rather have running this offense, Josh
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: McDaniels or Brian Dabele.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: McDaniels, it's just the originator, right, you're you're you're going
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: right to this, and I really like Brian Daball, but
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: I'll go with Josh McDaniels. He just has more experience.
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: So I would say I would have a lot of
- 1:50:35Speaker 2: faith in Dable, but developing me, you obviously developed Josh Allen,
- 1:50:39Speaker 2: so that would be a nice symmetry there.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: But I mean the development I thought about that, but
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: also the development windows only so long. Yeah, and ideally
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: you're building that long term partnership, and you know, once
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: they get going, once you get through that development phase,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: I think you're gonna get more out of Josh.
- 1:50:54Speaker 2: Fair enough, All right, let's get back to the phones
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: because Alex is back. What's up, Alex? A Hey, how's
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: it going?
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: Man? I have a quick question for you guys, because
- 1:51:06Speaker 4: I know y'all was talking about the Jack Jahye Bill.
- 1:51:09Speaker 6: Do you ever think like Josh mcdames would like bring.
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: Them, like have them like playing like a little bit
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: of h back like you played in high school and college.
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Yeah he could. Yeah, it's just so you're gonna have
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: an h back and a true fullback. That's a lot
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: of roster spots to dedicate to that position.
- 1:51:30Speaker 4: And the second question I got for you guys, did
- 1:51:33Speaker 4: y'all see that Madden got a new gadget player on there? Yes,
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: and you could kind of like put Deebo Samuels and
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: all that type stuff.
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: I'm sure I did.
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: Yes, I watched that trailer last night. I don't know
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: why they dropped bus.
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: So you also showed me that the new snow thing
- 1:51:49Speaker 2: is like you're in.
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: Like snow Thing school. And ironically to the whole conversation
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: we just spent twenty minutes on, like did the whole
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: One of the big things they did this year is
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: like Madden's much more data driven in terms of like
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: the coach AI, the quarterback AI. The different coaches are
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: going to make decisions based on what their real world's
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: counterparts would do, based on data they've collected over the
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: last ten years.
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: You should hate that.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: That's no, because that's a video game, that's program that's
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: absolutely what come.
- 1:52:15Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's like I can't say, that's not take
- 1:52:20Speaker 2: that's like computer nerds stuff.
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: Right, but it's not actual football to video. I cannot
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: wait to take advantage of the accurate Kyle Shanahan ai
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: late in the game.
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: Wow, so you're saying that he's gonna throw a wide
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: open pass and Jimmy Garoppolo is gonna overthrow.
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: He's gonna have his bad quarterback throwing up fourteen with
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: four minutes ago.
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: Yes, to walk off the super Bowl, but even sloth
- 1:52:41Speaker 2: and he could run it off.
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: But no, I think that they it's kind of cool
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: seeing this, Like obviously kids still play Madden, but there's
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: also a generation, our generation that's grown up on it.
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: And I learned a lot about the game from playing Madden.
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: I think you said you learned you learned about the game.
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: A lot of people have said they learned out the
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: game for playing Madden and when we were ten years
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: old and the game was a lot more basic, like
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: that made sense. But the game has kind of grown,
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: I think with that fan base, and they've made I
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: don't think it'll be impossible to play if you don't
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: understand football this year, and I don't think you need
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: to be like Bill Belichick to play it. But they
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: have kind of made it beneficial to especially the last
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: few years when they hit their lull, you could very
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: much game the game and the football element of it
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: wasn't relevant. You knew, Okay, this play just works, and
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: I'm just gonna run this over and over, or the
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: player ratings don't matter. If the guy's fast, he'll be good,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: he get be a sixty overall doesn't matter. Right, it
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: seems I will see if they executed it. But from
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: reading it from what it seems like they really put
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: work in this year where you are benefited by knowing
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: how football works.
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: Right, maybe what? Maybe? Maybe?
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: Well, so I'll give you an example. So they put
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: in something. I forget what the mechanic was called, but
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: it was something like route guessing or something where if
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: you are playing defense right and your opponent keeps burning
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: you with the same player the same route over and over,
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: you can route guess and there's like a soft guess
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: and a hard guess. So the soft guess is just
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: shading and there's not that much of a penalty and
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: there's not that much of a reward. You can hard
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: guess the route and basically, if you guess the route correctly,
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: you automatically take it away, regardless of what your defensive
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: call is. But that also comes with a significant penalty
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: because if you get it wrong, and I'm oversimplifying here,
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: if you gets it wrong, you guys gonna get totally
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: burn and be wide open. So you need to know
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: a couple of things. You one need to know the
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: name of the route, because in the menu you have
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: to pick the route that you're trying to take away.
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: You also kind of have to know you have to
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: recognize that it's that same route that's continually beating you.
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: And then on offense, you have to be able to
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: know if he's gonna route guess you. There's actually value
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: in the computer can do this too. There's value in
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: running setup plays. Right, I'm gonna run this comeback and
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: burn you with it five times, and if I catch
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: you route guessing it, well, now I'm gonna call the
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: go and I'm gonna cook you. So Cannick didn't necessarily
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: exist or didn't exist as formally as it does now,
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: which is I think is kind of cool.
- 1:55:06Speaker 2: We'll see, We'll see this is too complicated to me,
- 1:55:09Speaker 2: Like I said this, What do you mean too compkind?
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: I said this to you last night. My ideal Madden
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: is like Matten O four, Madden O five, which one
- 1:55:18Speaker 2: was Mike Vick on the cover the best one?
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: Well, like that's still existing.
- 1:55:22Speaker 2: Give me the hit stick, give me, give me, like
- 1:55:24Speaker 2: just I just want to run around for like eight seconds.
- 1:55:27Speaker 2: I don't want to play actual you will still do that, true,
- 1:55:30Speaker 2: Like I just want to play a video game.
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: I want to have to think they made it so
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: certain quarterbacks are if you want to do the run
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: around thing, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray are like
- 1:55:41Speaker 1: programmed to be better in those situations and like have
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: abilities in those situations that like I don't know Matthew no,
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: Matts Davis about exam, who's like a true pocket Kirk
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: Cousins right that Kirk Cousins can't do right. And it's
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: not just based on the ratings. There's like things programmed
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: into the game.
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: But my my whole thing about Madden is when I
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: was actually playing Madden back in my day, when I
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: was actually playing Madden I ran like the same three
- 1:56:10Speaker 2: plays and they worked. It was like freaking remember the Titans, right,
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: I'm run the same three plays and then you know
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: we're just gonna keep giving it to him and like
- 1:56:17Speaker 2: no volcano will eventually work, right, So like that's how
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: I like, I don't want to I don't want to
- 1:56:21Speaker 2: do all this other stuff.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: Gets a little boring, gets a little repetitive. They made
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: it such less repetitive. It's the college game. You can
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: still do that because in college football, in real life
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: you can still do that.
- 1:56:30Speaker 2: So I used to run, uh this one play and
- 1:56:33Speaker 2: with the Patriots, obviously Brady this was very probably Brady Gronk,
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: Shane Veren so like level page. Yeah, we were like
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: probably in college, late high school and uh, and Gronk
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: had the flag like, he had the corner route and
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: he was just so damn big that he could just
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: box out anybody on the corner route. And then Veren
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: had the flat like so he would and you what
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: you would do, like when you had zone, you could
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: just high low the defender out there, right, So you
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: can still do that with Gronk. But the problem was
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: the game got so far behind that the average tight
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: end just by being six six played like Gronk because
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: of the way the game is programmed.
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: So now you can do that. You could do that
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: with the Patriots if they had Gronk. You couldn't do
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: that with the Patriots with the tight ends they had
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: after Gronk.
- 1:57:20Speaker 2: So the other thing that I would do is that
- 1:57:22Speaker 2: if I could tell it was man to man, which
- 1:57:25Speaker 2: usually you could because it was a freaking video game,
- 1:57:27Speaker 2: you could tell like what the leverage of the defender was.
- 1:57:31Speaker 2: So if he was sitting outside, I would hot routed
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: to a seam so that he would bend it inside
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: their defender. But if it was the defender was like
- 1:57:38Speaker 2: the linebacker in the box or something, I'd still have
- 1:57:40Speaker 2: him run the corner and then he'd run away.
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: So they still do that. It's the same player and
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: they still do that, but now you can bluff it, okay,
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: and you can bluff coverages like they put this in
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: last year, so you can run COVERAG two but come
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: out in a Cover three shell.
- 1:57:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: I did hear about it, And that's actually really fun.
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: That's that's modern NFL.
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: Can you can screw? And they added this year in
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: front of that, they took stunt out of the game
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: for like ten years. They finally put stunts back in
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: this year, and so when you call a defensive play,
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: it's no more. Remember it would just be like cover
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: two man and that would be the play. You now
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: call the front and you call the coverage. And they
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: put in all the Minnesota sim pressures and that stuff too.
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: They put in all these modern blitzes.
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: All right, let's take this last call from one of
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: our regulars, Mark in Connecticut, and then we're going to
- 1:58:20Speaker 2: wrap this show up. What's up, Mark?
- 1:58:23Speaker 7: Hey, guys, Love you guys.
- 1:58:25Speaker 6: Hope to see you guys on training camp. Absolutely get
- 1:58:28Speaker 6: that rock in and rolling finally.
- 1:58:30Speaker 5: Yeah, what I wanted to say is is this crazy
- 1:58:34Speaker 5: to think that our second round pick and fourth round
- 1:58:37Speaker 5: pick of last year may not even make the roster
- 1:58:41Speaker 5: of this coming year. I mean, that just baffles my
- 1:58:44Speaker 5: mind that we wasted a second and a fourth round
- 1:58:46Speaker 5: pick on these guys.
- 1:58:48Speaker 8: So love you guys, hope.
- 1:58:49Speaker 6: To talk to you doing again.
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Mark, I hate to hit in the show
- 1:58:52Speaker 2: on that note, but yes, so I don't think I
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: think Jalen Polk will be here in some capacity, whether
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: it's you know, on a reserve LESPUPI R whatever the
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: case may be. I don't think they're going to totally
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: give up on Jalen Polk. But there's definitely a good
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: chance that both those guys are not like contributing, you know.
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: I think there's a really good chance of that.
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: Yes, And I don't think this isn't the normal situation
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: if Drawd Mayo was still here. I don't think we
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: talk about Jalen pol potentially getting cut. This is in
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: this This kind of happens around the NFL when you
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: have new leadership. Players that and we talked about this
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: last year with Mayo coming from Bill like players that
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: might based on contract or draft status or whatever, players
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: that might have certain standing don't because everybody's kind of
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: viewed equally when new leadership comes in. So that it's
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: not that Jalen Polk was so bad that, oh my god,
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: the second round pick was terrible, So who's gonna get
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: cut after a year that's historic? Don'ting wrong, wasn't good,
- 1:59:50Speaker 1: But there is that extenuating circumstance of it's a this
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: isn't the coach that drafted him, And you're climbing up
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: a bigger hill when you're facing.
- 1:59:59Speaker 2: That fair enough, all right. So that's the show for today.
- 2:00:02Speaker 2: We'll be back next week. We will be talking defense
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: on our fifty three man roster, projection and special teams,
- 2:00:08Speaker 2: and we'll be back on Wednesday at noon. I should
- 2:00:11Speaker 2: mention no PU tomorrow Juneteenth holiday company holiday, So Node
- 2:00:16Speaker 2: PU tomorrow. Make sure everybody knows that, because I do
- 2:00:20Speaker 2: think we said yesterday that we'll be that Thursday. We
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: won't be.
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: Was that Alex I said that is Coorea?
- 2:00:26Speaker 2: Yeah, No PU tomorrow, So PU will be back Tuesday.
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: We'll be back on Wednesday. We'll see you guys in
